  1. The 10 cheapest new manual cars you can buy in Australia The 10 cheapest new manual cars you can buy in Australia Cars with manual transmissions haven’t been the mass-market choice for some time now, but that doesn’t mean they’re extinct. Those in the market for a sports car, for example, may want to opt for a manual transmission for the adjusted driving dynamics they offer. Some such cars still allow you to do that without hassle, including – but not limited to – the Subaru WRX, Toyota Supra, Hyundai i30 N, Mazda MX-5, BMW M2, and the BRZ/86 twins. But in many cases, manual cars are cheaper than their automatic counterparts, which means they also have a place in lower-end budget vehicles. 100s of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. 3. Projections and feasibility of data centers in space Projections and feasibility of data centers in space With rising demand for data storage, there is a need to build more data centers. To limit the amount of land these facilities would use, there are unique environments, such as space, that could house data centers. Data centers in space may sound like a far-out, futuristic idea, but experimenting with existing computer technology in space could make this idea a reality in a matter of years. Data centers in low Earth orbit (LEO) could save land use on Earth, reduce energy costs due to solar power technology and reduce data latency. Benefits to data centers in space Data centers in LEO would provide lower energy costs, as well as technological and environmental benefits. Lower energy costs with solar energy On Earth, power and cooling are among the greatest costs associated with data center operations. In space, solar power and batteries would supply all the power, reducing the data center’s running costs. Additionally, a spacecraft — in this case, a data center — in LEO orbits the Earth roughly every 90 minutes. During that time, about 45 minutes are in sunlight, while the remaining time is in darkness. The energy reserve from the solar panels maintains the data center’s batteries to keep the data center hardware running in the absence of sunlight. Increased performance for satellite-based workloads Placing a data center in orbit could improve performance for satellite-based workloads. Consider a satellite used for weather forecasting. This type of satellite must transmit raw data to Earth for processing. However, the day may come when weather satellites could instead transmit data to an orbital data center. If the data center is close to the satellite, the satellite could transmit data to the data center at a higher rate of throughput than if the same satellite transmits data to a receiving station on the ground. In orbit, raw data would be processed before being sent to Earth. This would improve the workload’s overall performance, freeing up bandwidth at the receiving station. Axiom Space has formed a partnership with Skyloom with the goal of creating the world’s first orbital data center. Axiom Space plans to support data transmission speeds of 10 Gbps. Data centers in LEO would save the limited land space left on Earth, leaving it for more efficient use, like farming or housing developments. Environmental impact One data center facility typically occupies about 40 acres of land on Earth, and hyperscale data centers occupy hundreds of acres. Data centers in LEO would save the limited land space left on Earth, leaving it for more efficient use, like farming or housing developments. These data centers would also use sustainable energy resources, like solar power and battery reserves, rather than the electric grid that ground data centers use. Security Data centers in LEO would have few physical security threats since it would be nearly impossible for someone to gain physical access to the data center. Orbital data centers would also be able to communicate with satellites and receiving stations using secure channels and closed communication systems, thereby helping to guard against cyberattacks. Challenges with data centers in space There are several different factors that can adversely affect computers in space, like extreme temperatures and the unpredictable environment. Extreme force from launch First, there is the launch that is necessary to reach space. Space vehicles endure extreme vibrations and high g-force loads during launch. These forces would likely damage or ******** any non-solid-state components, such as rotational hard drives. Equipment destruction from radiation and cosmic rays Radiation can cause bit flips and memory ***********. Similarly, galactic cosmic rays can cause high-energy particles to impact orbital systems. These particles can ******** or shorten the life of transistors. Error-correcting memory can help guard against memory ***********, but shielding against radioactive particles is also required. Cooling systems In space, there can be several hundred degrees of difference in temperature between sunlight and shadows. Conventional cooling systems are not as effective in space since convection does not work in microgravity. However, space-based computers, like those on the International Space Station (ISS), use radiators filled with ammonia for cooling. Space threats and proper building materials An orbital data center’s infrastructure must protect the inside hardware from micrometeorite impacts and temperature fluctuations. The data center’s engineers would make high-stress structural components primarily from stainless steel or titanium, while using aluminum alloy for most of the construction. The data center would also require a layer of gold or silver foil to protect it against certain types of radiation and help with temperature control. A layer of Kevlar and Nextel could provide protection against impacts, while an external thermal blanket would provide additional insulation against extreme temperatures. Could data centers function in space? Given that the space environment is so hostile to computing hardware, it’s worth questioning whether data center hardware could function in space. Recent experiments by HPE tested the durability and performance of computer hardware in launch and in orbit. In 2017, HPE launched a supercomputer to the ISS to find out whether standard computing hardware could function in space without modifications. The two servers spent over a year and a half in orbit. While the system did manage to remain online and did not suffer any data loss, nine out of 20 solid-state drives ******* during the mission. Ultimately, the experiment demonstrated that off-the-shelf data center hardware could reliably function in space. However, HPE used special software for its Spaceborne Computer to keep the systems running smoothly. This software detects and corrects any errors introduced by radiation or galactic cosmic rays. HPE launched follow-up missions, sending additional data center hardware to the ISS in 2021 and 2024. Considerations for space-based data centers Measures exist for computers to properly function in space. As an example, space shuttles, like Challenger, Discovery and Endeavour, contained five general-purpose computers (GPCs). There were concerns about how the space environment might impact a computer’s reliability. The space shuttles’ GPCs functioned similarly to a modern failover clustering environment in that, during normal operations, four computers were online at the same time. Each of these computers had a vote. If one of the computers made a mistake, the other GPCs overrode it. The fifth GPC served as a backup flight system that only functioned if one of the primary computers *******. There are numerous challenges to consider and overcome for a computer to work in space, which is why the shuttles’ GPCs had this configuration. Like the space shuttles, it will take trial and error to successfully deploy a permanent orbital data center, which would likely be unmanned. But, with persistence, the possibility of launching data centers in LEO may not be too far away. Brien Posey is a former 22-time Microsoft MVP and a commercial astronaut candidate. 5. Map shows Trump’s 2024 election victory came as voters shifted red across the country Map shows Trump’s 2024 election victory came as voters shifted red across the country While the 2024 presidential election was among the closest in recent memory — with President-elect Donald Trump ahead by about 3 percentage points over Vice President Kamala Harris — Trump’s vote share grew in a diverse array of regions across the country and across different demographic groups. It’s the first time in Trump’s three campaigns for the White House that he’s topped his opponent in the popular vote, and only the second time since 1988 that any *********** has done so. In 2016, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won almost 66 million votes (48%), compared to Trump’s nearly 63 million (46%), but Trump won the Electoral College. In 2020, he lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote to President Biden, who received about 81 million votes (51%) nationwide, compared to Trump’s 74 million (47%). Trump’s victory in 2024 was driven by improvements in support in a vast majority of counties nationwide — more than 9 in 10 — according to data from counties where at least 95% of votes have been counted as of Friday. Trump’s improvements crossed regions, and included urban, suburban and rural gains. Trump even fared better in most places where a majority of voters preferred Harris, like New Jersey, or across the Hudson River, in his hometown of New York City. The Garden State, a longtime Democratic stronghold, swung markedly in Trump’s favor. For instance, the latest data show Trump with a slim 3% lead in suburban Passaic County, where he got just 41% of the vote in 2020. In New York City, where Trump grew up and spent most of his life before entering politics, he didn’t just surpass his two previous results; his roughly 30% vote share topped every *********** candidate since Ronald Reagan, 40 years ago. Nearly 2,000 miles away, Maverick County, Texas, a majority Latino border county that Biden carried easily in 2020, swung even more, about 28 points. Trump in 2024 outperformed Biden’s 2020 showing, and Harris fared worse than Trump did in 2020. CBS News exit polls from the last two elections showed Trump gaining among both men and women this year. In 2020, Trump won men by a hair, 49% to 48%, but in 2024, his campaign’s efforts to woo men appear to have paid off: his support from men grew to 55%. In 2020, Trump managed to win 43% of women voters. In 2024, despite Democrats’ focus on women voters and ********* access, which boosted them in the midterm election races, Trump still increased his numbers with women, notching up that figure two ticks, to 45%. Trump made gains among core groups within the traditional *********** coalition, such as evangelical voters. But he also increased his support among groups Democrats have relied on, including young voters and Latino voters, such as those in Maverick County and another former Democratic stronghold, Florida’s Miami-Dade, which Mr. Biden won in 2020, with 53%. This year, Trump carried the county with about 55% of the vote, becoming the first *********** to win there since 1988. The chart below shows the change in support for Trump in demographic groups between 2020 and 2024. 6. NASA astronauts on readjusting to life on Earth: ‘It’s hard to sit’ NASA astronauts on readjusting to life on Earth: ‘It’s hard to sit’ Sign up for CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more. Three of the astronauts who were unexpectedly hospitalized after returning from the International Space Station in late October discussed the SpaceX Crew-8 mission during a NASA news conference on Friday. The trio revealed some anecdotes about the trials of readjusting to life on Earth after spending more than 230 days in space. The astronauts remained tight-lipped about the nature of the medical issue that had left an as-yet-undisclosed crew member hospitalized overnight. But they did discuss some of the symptoms they have experienced during the readjustment to life under the effects of gravity. “I’m a first-time flyer, and fascinated by the readaptation,” said NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, who served as mission commander. “The big things you expect — being disoriented, being dizzy. But the little things like just sitting in a hard chair … My backside has not really sat in a hard thing for (235) days.” Dominick added that he was recently sitting outside with his family eating dinner and was forced to lie down on a towel in the yard to remain part of the conversation because his seat proved too uncomfortable. “That wasn’t in a book I read,” Dominick joked. “Hey, you’re going to space. It’s going to be hard to sit on a hard chair.” Dominick and fellow NASA astronauts Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps fielded questions Friday while their fourth crewmate, Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, did “not participate because of his travel schedule,” according to a NASA news release. “The weight and the heaviness of things just is surprising,” Epps said of her experience returning to Earth. “(I’ve been) laying any chance I got. But you have to move, and you have to exercise every day, otherwise you don’t get those gains. You have to move regardless of how exhausted you feel.” Barratt, Dominick, Epps and Grebenkin spent 235 days in space before returning to Earth with a splashdown landing off the coast of Florida aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule on October 25. The SpaceX capsule “********* a normal entry and splashdown,” according to NASA, and all four crew members could be seen smiling and waving as they exited the vehicle aboard a recovery ship. Hours later, however, NASA revealed that the entire crew had been taken to a nearby hospital — Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola — “out of an abundance of caution.” The space agency later disclosed that one of the astronauts had experienced a medical issue and remained at the hospital overnight. NASA did not disclose which astronaut remained hospitalized nor did the space agency share any details about the medical issue, saying in a statement only that the crew member was “in stable condition” and “under observation as a precautionary measure.” The three NASA astronauts repeatedly declined to comment on the matter Friday. In this screenshot from video, NASA astronauts (from left) Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps speak during a November 8 news conference to discuss the SpaceX Crew-8 mission. – NASA “In the fullness of time, we will allow this to come out and document it for now, medical privacy is very important to us,” Barratt, a medical doctor and veteran astronaut who piloted the Crew-8 mission, said. “Medical privacy and the processes we have going on right now negate our ability to (discuss the issue).” Medical checkouts are routine after long-duration missions to space. However, astronauts are typically transported directly back to their home base in Houston after splashdown, rather than diverted to a nearby hospital, for reconditioning as they transition back to Earth’s environment. Boeing Starliner’s impact on Crew-8’s return The Crew-8 astronauts launched into space on March 3 and remained in space longer than expected. Among the roadblocks for their return to Earth were schedule changes related to issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which had carried NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the space station on a test flight in early June but was deemed too risky to return its crew back to Earth. NASA ultimately chose to send back the Boeing spacecraft empty and moved Starliner’s astronauts onto the SpaceX Crew-9 mission, delaying the launch of that mission. That schedule adjustment in turn delayed Crew-8’s return because Crew-9 had to arrive at the orbiting laboratory for a handoff of duties before Crew-8 could disembark. Weather delays also pushed Crew-8’s return into late October. While the 235-day mission was a few weeks longer than routine trips to the orbiting outpost, it’s not a record-setting stay in space for the astronauts. NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, for example, logged a record 371 days in space during a mission that concluded in September 2023. Rubio’s stay was extended after his original ride to low-Earth orbit — a Russian Soyuz capsule — sprang a coolant ***** while docked to the space station. 7. Jack Dorsey dramatically shutters Block’s TBD crypto unit Jack Dorsey dramatically shutters Block’s TBD crypto unit Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter Inc., speaks during the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, Florida, U.S., on Friday, June 4, 2021. Eva Marie Uzcategui | Bloomberg | Getty Images During the crypto-crazed summer of 2021, when memecoins such as dogecoin and Shiba Inu were rocketing alongside bitcoin and ethereum, Square founder Jack Dorsey announced that his payments company was starting a new business unit, with the goal of “making it easy to create non-custodial, permissionless, and decentralized financial services.” “Our primary focus is #Bitcoin,” Dorsey proclaimed on Twitter. The name of the business unit would be TBD. In December of that year, Dorsey went a step further, changing the name of Square Inc. to Block, a reference, he said, to a number of things, including blockchain, the technology underpinning bitcoin. The Square Crypto business became known as Spiral. Three years later, Dorsey is in retreat. On Block’s third-quarter earnings call Thursday, CFO Amrita Ahuja said Block has “made some recent decisions with respect to some of our emerging initiatives” and is “winding down our TBD efforts.” Block continues to own a hefty amount of bitcoin on its balance sheet, with the current value of its holdings swelling to $630 million. And the company said it will be investing in a bitcoin mining initiative as well as Bitkey, its bitcoin wallet, while continuing to allow users to buy bitcoin through Cash App. It’s a notable change of tune. TBD was designed to be Block’s platform for developers. Block called it Web5 and said the mission was to create a more decentralized, secure and private internet. Dorsey said in a tweet in mid-2022 that Web5 “will likely be our most important contribution to the internet.” Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Square’s five-year stock chart But Wall Street’s view on crypto was starting to sour dramatically. With inflation soaring in 2022 and interest rates on the rise, shareholders demanded quicker returns on their investments. After peaking in 2021, Block shares lost more than 80% of their value before bottoming in October 2023. Block said in late 2023 that it would cut its head count — then about 13,000 staffers — by as much as 1,000 by the end of 2024. Fortune reported that Block ***** off employees at TBD in recent weeks. And in the third-quarter shareholder letter, Block said it was “scaling back” its investment in Tidal, the music-streaming service founded by Jay-Z, after spending about $300 million on a majority stake in the business in 2021. Tidal was part of TBD. Dorsey was asked by an analyst on Thursday’s call about the company’s current bitcoin strategy. “What we’re focused on in terms of our strategy overall on bitcoin is making it more accessible, making sure that more people can access bitcoin, buy, sell it, obviously, but also send it peer-to-peer,” Dorsey said. Dorsey added that he wants “the internet to have a native currency,” because that would allow Block to move money faster and offer Cash App and other products in more markets. A Block spokesperson reiterated the company’s public statement and pointed to Dorsey’s comments from the earnings call. What’s become clear is that Dorsey can only do so much with crypto while trying to appease a more discerning Wall Street. Shares of Block were down about 1% at market close Friday, after the company reported revenue that trailed estimates and issued weaker ****** profit guidance than some analysts were expecting. In his 1,400-word letter to shareholders, Dorsey focused entirely on the company’s lending offerings for small businesses. A significant chunk of that is the buy now, pay later product from Afterpay, which Block acquired for $29 billion in 2021. Dorsey didn’t mention crypto or bitcoin once. 8. Grand Theft Auto 5 sells over 202 million copies Grand Theft Auto 5 sells over 202 million copies Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 202 million copies across its life. The singular entry debuted in 2013. In its latest fiscal report, Rockstar parent, Take-Two Interactive, goes on record to express that the game has breached that new milestone. Meanwhile, the IP itself, across all its games and collections, has managed to sell over 435 million copies. It’s an impressive feat, especially since back in May, we heard the game sold 200 million copies, but also not the most surprising as we continue to wait for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is poised to release in fall 2025, despite rumors saying otherwise. 10. GTA Online Players Dread Incoming Cayo Perico Nerf Following Announcement of New Heist Challenge GTA Online Players Dread Incoming Cayo Perico Nerf Following Announcement of New Heist Challenge Rockstar Games has assigned the GTA Online community a mighty task for November as the title concludes its 2024. We now have a brand-new community Heist Challenge calling for gamers to steal $20 trillion GTA$ before the end of the month from a variety of activities. GTA Online’s latest update brings another challenge for the community. (Image via Rockstar Games) If the community manages to pull this off, Rockstar will release brand-new cosmetics and a vehicle next month. While the rewards are quite exciting, some players are worried that it means another round of Cayo Perico nerfs. GTA Online Community Fears More Nerfs For Cayo Perico Is Rockstar planning another nerf for Cayo Perico? (Image via Rockstar Games) For making money in GTA Online, Rockstar has provided plenty of different avenues. You can do in-game jobs, participate in special events, own a business, and sell vehicles. However, nothing comes close to the amount one can make from heists, particularly the Cayo Perico one. Rockstar dropped the Cayo Perico heist back in 2020, and to this day, it’s still the biggest earner for every grinder. However, it’s a shell of its former self. The heist was so busted that developers nerfed its payout to oblivion in 2023. The majority of the community was frustrated with these changes. With the latest heist challenge that tasks the community to steal a combined $20 trillion, gamers are worried that this might mean additional nerfs for Cayo Perico. The last time we had such a challenge, Rockstar immediately nerfed the fan favorite heist. Comment byu/Mercifulwillow from discussion ingtaonline Even though Cayo Perico isn’t as profitable as it used to be, it will still be the ultimate way for players to complete this challenge. Comment byu/Mercifulwillow from discussion ingtaonline Many in the community believe that Rockstar is conducting this challenge to figure out the methods for making money in GTA Online so that they can be nerfed to obvilion and push Sharkcard sales. Comment byu/Mercifulwillow from discussion ingtaonline Let’s hope Rockstar doesn’t ruin Cayo Perico again. It’s currently the only way for a solo player to make big money in the game right now. If Rockstar really wants to nerf its payout again, the next-big job it’s planning to introduce with the game’s annual winter update must compensate in some way or another. Rockstar is Finally Bringing Current-Gen Features for GTA Online Players Rockstar has finally given the GTA Online community what is desired. (Image via Rockstar Games) GTA 5 is a game that has been released multiple times over the past decade and is available pretty much every new console under the sun since the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, you might be shocked to know that the best way to experience the title isn’t on PC. Originally debuting on PC in 2015 with its own features, the PC version of the game was later overshadowed by “Expanded and Enhanced,” released in 2022 for Xbox Series S/X and PS5. Gamers couldn’t help but wonder when the current-gen version of the title would be brought to PC, and the wait is finally over. GTA Online Community Update First details on an exciting new GTA Online update coming in December — featuring clandestine operations launched from the Darnell Bros. Garment Factory. Plus new community challenges, experience improvements, and more: pic.twitter.com/QRn4Bn71Wb — Rockstar Games (@RockstarGames) November 1, 2024 Last week, Rockstar Games shared its latest community update for GTA Online and revealed a bunch of features coming in the next few months, including the much-requested Xbox Series and PlayStation features for the PC platform. The Expanded and Enhanced variants of GTA Online bring a wealth of content that has been locked for the current-gen consoles, such as Premium Test Ride, Hao’s Special Works, Career Build and Progress, and much more. With that said, do you think Rockstar is planning to nerf Cayo Pierco once again in GTA Online? Let us know in the comments below. 11. MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) review: the best gets even better MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) review: the best gets even better Apple MacBook Pro M4 MSRP $3,649.00 “With the M4, the MacBook Pro has never been better.” ***** Even brighter display Fantastic 12MP webcam Record-breaking performance Best-in-class keyboard and trackpad All the ports you want, now faster Speakers so good you’ll ditch your headphones ***** Still no OLED The 16-inch model is quite heavy The M4 chip comes at an important time. The competition from Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD has never been stronger on the Windows side, coming to disrupt Apple’s comfortable lead in the past few years. I was sent the M4 Pro configuration of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. It’s a large laptop with a very powerful chip inside, one that claims to have it all: fantastic battery life, impressive GPU performance, world-class AI, and the “fastest core” on the CPU side. It’s hard to complain when Apple has only reduced the price of these machines and amped up nearly every aspect, including the ports, display, performance, camera, and battery life. This isn’t just the best MacBook you can buy, it’s also one of the very best laptops that money can buy. Specs and configurations MacBook Pro M4 (14-inch) MacBook Pro M4 (16-inch) Dimensions 12.31 x 8.71 x 0.61 inches 14.01 x 9.77 x 0.66 inches Weight 3.4 pounds (M4) 3.5 pounds (M4 Pro) 3.6 pounds (M4 Max) 4.7 pounds Display 14.2-inch 3024 x 1964 120Hz mini-LED (1,000 nits SDR, 1,600 nits HDR) 16.2-inch 3456 x 2234 120Hz mini-LED (1,000 nits SDR, 1,600 nits HDR) CPU M4 (10-core) M4 Pro (12-core) M4 Max (14-core) M4 Pro (12-core) M4 Pro (14-core) Graphics M4 (10-core GPU) M4 Pro (16-core GPU) M4 Pro (20-core GPU) M4 Max (32-core GPU) M4 Max (40-core GPU) M4 Pro (16-core GPU) M4 Pro (20-core GPU) M4 Max (32-core GPU) M4 Max (40-core GPU) RAM 16GB (M4 only) 24GB 32GB 36GB (M4 Max only) 64GB 128GB (M4 Max only) 24GB 32GB 36GB (M4 Max only) 64GB 128GB (M4 Max only) Storage 512GB 1TB 2TB 4TB 8TB 512GB 1TB 2TB 4TB 8TB Ports 3x Thunderbolt 4 ports (M4 only) 3x Thunderbolt 5 ports 1x Ethernet jack 1x SDXC slot 1x HDMI 3x Thunderbolt 5 ports 1x Ethernet jack 1x SDXC slot 1x HDMI Battery 72.4-watt-hour battery 100-watt-hour battery Wireless Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Price $1,599+ $2,499+ As with the M3, the M4 MacBook Pro starts at $1,599. For the first time, it now comes with 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB, which was formerly a $200 upgrade. The bump is significant for that entry-level 14-inch model and results in a $200 discount throughout the lineup. Like before, the 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 starts at $2,499, but has a pretty substantial base configuration of the M4 Pro, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. My review configuration costed $3,649, coming with the 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48GB of RAM, a 2TB SSD, and the optional nano-texture display. Interestingly, the M4 Pro configuration only has the 48GB option for memory — no more, no less. You can, of course, always max out by choosing the M4 Max, which can be configured with up to 128GB of RAM and 8TB of storage. While the starting prices of the MacBook Pro are reasonable, adding storage gets out of hand quickly. It costs $600 to get 2TB of storage, and the prices get astronomical from there on out. It’s another $600 for 4TB, and at that point, you’re paying over $4,000 for your laptop. Just to put things in perspective, you can buy the Asus ProArt P16 with an RTX 4070 with 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage for $2,300. Design Luke Larsen / Digital Trends It’s been three and a half years of the MacBook Pro using this influential design, both the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. These are thick laptops, built like tanks, and yes, lack some of the finesse of a MacBook Air. But they’re beautiful, nonetheless. The introduction of the Space ****** ****** option last year is the only physical change that’s been introduced since 2021, and this time around, the darker shade has completely replaced Space Gray in all configurations. Personally, I’ll miss Space Gray, and I wish it had traded out Silver instead. Oh well. My model was the 16-inch size, which I’ll admit is too big for me. It doesn’t give you much in the way of more performance or extra features, and at 4.7 pounds, it’s no joke to lug around. Some will appreciate the extra screen real estate, no doubt, but there’s definitely a trade-off in mobility. One of the best MacBook Pro alternatives, the Asus ProArt P16, is both lighter and thinner, despite packing in a powerful discrete GPU. But the 14-inch MacBook Pro really is the perfect compact laptop. I’ve got last year’s 14-inch M3 Max model sitting next to it, and it continues to be the laptop I prefer using. It goes without saying that regardless of which size you choose, you’re getting a keyboard that’s large, comfortable, and precise. It’s among the best laptop keyboards you’ll type on — and that goes for the trackpad too. I continue to appreciate the full-size function keys and the smooth glass surface of the trackpad. Double-clicks are smooth and not too loud, something some other haptic feedback trackpads struggle with. The one eyesore in the whole experience to me is still the notch in the display. I find it quite ugly and intrusive, and the way it cuts into the menu bar can be clumsy, especially on the 14-inch model. I know we’ll move beyond this design eventually, so here’s to hoping it happens in the 2026 redesign at least. Ports and connectivity Luke Larsen / Digital Trends The ports on the MacBook Pro haven’t changed since 2021, and that’s a good thing. The one big upgrade this year is the inclusion of Thunderbolt 5. It’s only available in the M4 Pro and M4 Max models, while the M4 is stuck on Thunderbolt 4. The Thunderbolt 5 increases bandwidth from 40Gb/s to 120Gb/s. That means much faster file transfers and broader external display support. The system can support up to two 6K 60Hz external displays, and if you upgrade to the M4 Max, that bumps up to four external displays. There are no upgrades to wireless connectivity with the M4. For future-proofing purposes, it’s too bad we didn’t get the bump to Wi-Fi 7, but Wi-Fi 6E here is certainly still current, as is Bluetooth 5.3. Display I’ve already discussed how the size options for these screens impacts the overall experience, but let’s talk about the display itself. Apple has been resisting OLED on the MacBook Pro for years now, and it’s starting to show. Don’t get me wrong — I love this MacBook Pro’s mini-LED display. It’s incredibly bright, and the nano-texture display is the perfect balance of delivering clarity while deflecting glare. Unfortunately, Apple is charging $150 for the nano-texture upgrade, but it really is a beautiful addition. It’s creates a subtle matte effect that really does look fantastic. Luke Larsen / Digital Trends But no, the mini-LED panel will just never reach the highs of OLED, especially in terms of ****** saturation, accuracy, and contrast. When you consider the brightness of the tandem OLED panel on the iPad Pro This screen hits 100% sRGB, 99% Display-P3, and 87% AdobeRGB, while OLED typically gets closer to 100% across the board. For ****** accuracy, I measured a Delta-E of 1.18, which isn’t bad, but a bit behind many of the best OLED laptops I’ve tested. Like the iPad Pro, however, the MacBook Pro screen does now go up to 1,000 nits of brightness in SDR. The catch is that you’ll need to turn on adaptive brightness in settings to reach that maximum. When tested with that setting off, I measured max brightness of 585 nits, which is still brighter than many OLED laptop screens. To test the full brightness, though, I brought the MacBook Pro outside. But under the midday cloudy skies of Portland, I could tell I wasn’t hitting the full 1,000 nits. I had to shine a flashlight right into the light sensor to really see that max brightness shine. And though I wasn’t able to get a reading from my colorimeter at this brightness, I could definitely see the difference. I do wish Apple had made it possible to manually reach that full brightness, even if hidden in settings. However, when you might actually need the extra brightness, the MacBook Pro does have more to offer than any other laptop. Speaking of extra brightness, HDR is handled really well too, mostly thanks to the seamless integration with macOS. When you hit HDR content, you’ll know it. And when you don’t, you’ll forget it even exists. That’s exactly how HDR should be handled. Webcam and speakers Luke Larsen / Digital Trends The front-facing FaceTime camera received quite a bump this time around, going from 1080p to 12-megapixel. That makes it the most high-resolution webcam on a laptop, and it really does look great. It handles low light better, introducing much less noise into the image. It’s not only about more pixels though. Apple has two tricks up its sleeve when it comes to the camera: Desk View and Center Stage. Both are neat additions, if a little gimmicky. Center Stage keeps you centered in the frame, which can be helpful during presentations. Desk View, meanwhile, adds a second camera feed of the desk in front of you. There’s a separate new app called Desk View, which helps you set up the angle correctly. I tested this out in a FaceTime call, and while I could see specific instances where it would be useful, it’s a bit too blurry to make me enticed to try it out more. The speakers are fantastic, as you might expect. They’re louder, bolder, and bassier than many Bluetooth speakers, filling even large rooms with plenty of volume. The 16-inch model in particular, which I tested out, still has the absolute best speakers of any laptop. That’s not changing anytime soon. Performance Luke Larsen / Digital Trends “Fastest core. *******.” That was actually a quote from Intel’s marketing about its most recent Core Ultra Series 2 chips. That may have been true for a couple of weeks, but the M4 has quickly arrived to spoil Intel’s fun. And boy, it sure does run circles around just about every other mobile chip on the market. The 14-core part has eight Performance cores and six Efficiency cores, but that arrangement hasn’t changed in this generation. Instead, it’s all about pushing those cores as hard as they can go, resulting in the fastest single-core score in Cinebench R24 and Geekbench 6 I’ve ever seen. And it’s not even close. Its score of 179 is 18% higher than the the M3 Max and 29% higher than the fastest Core Ultra 7 258V in our database, the Asus Zenbook S 14. The comparison isn’t looking any brighter for Qualcomm or AMD’s recent efforts. The multi-core gains are more modest over the previous generation, but they still show Apple way out in the lead over its direct competitors. Take one of my favorite laptops from this year for example, the Surface Laptop 7th Edition. The M4 Pro in the MacBook Pro is a shocking 53% ahead of the Snapdragon X Elite chip inside the Surface Laptop. That’s no joke. Cinebench R24 (single/multi) Geekbench 6 (single/multi) Handbrake (seconds) MacBook Pro 16 (M4 Pro) 179 / 1752 3930 / 22712 49 MacBook Pro 14 (M3 Max) 102 / 485 3174 / 21137 50 Asus ProArt P16 (Ryzen 9 HX 370 / RTX 4070) 114 / 1165 2688 / 14497 n/a Surface Laptop 7th Edition (Snapdragon X1E80100) 105 / 826 2388 / 13215 n/a Dell XPS 16 (Core Ultra 7 155H / RTX 4070) 100 / 838 2196 / 12973 69 Having such a commanding lead in both single-core and multi-core performance means the M4 Pro MacBook Pro is just going to feel faster in just about every task you throw at it. You might not notice the performance difference when browsing the web, but if you spend most of your day in front of an editing timeline, you sure will. These MacBook ***** hold their crown as the ultimate creator workstation. The ProArt P16 is a fantastic Windows alternative, and it’s impressive how much Asus has been able to emulate the success of the MacBook Pro, but there’s a reason they remain the go-to option. Part of the story with the M4 is also the AI performance. Apple Intelligence launches in earnest on these laptops, and Apple says its new Neural Engine is twice as fast as in the previous generation. As tested in Geekbench AI, that’s exactly what I saw. Graphics Luke Larsen / Digital Trends Upon the announcement, Apple stated that there were graphics improvements in the M4 series. Although the previous-gen M3 would still represent the larger architectural upgrade, introducing features such as mesh shading and Dynamic Caching, the M4 builds on that change with higher frequencies and faster memory. Impressively, the M4 Pro scored a 9182 in the GPU test in Cinebench R24. Making a one-to-one comparison with a discrete GPU is difficult, especially since performance varies so wildly in laptops. But it lands somewhere in the ballpark of between a mobile RTX 4060 and 4070. For example, the RTX 4070 in the ROG Zephyrus G16 scored 10395 in this same test, while the RTX 4070 in the Dell XPS 16 scored 9721. But the comparisons with older Macs are particularly interesting. The M4 Pro’s GPU is 16% faster than the M2 Ultra’s GPU in the Mac Studio. That’s right — the 20-core GPU in the M4 Pro beats the 60-core GPU we tested in the $4,000 Mac Studio. That’s mind-boggling. So, what’s all that GPU performance good for? Well, certainly not web browsing and word processing. But as it turns out, the M4 Pro MacBook Pro is a pretty great gaming device, so long as you can find something to play. I loaded up Baldur’s Gate 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Rocket League, and Myst. In my testing so far. The first two games, which are a bit more graphically intense, played smoothly at the highest graphics preset — so long as I dropped the resolution to 1200p. Neither could handle playing smoothly in native resolution, of course, but that wasn’t too surprising. HDR looks incredible in both of these games on this display, something no gaming laptop can deliver in quite the same way. And the MacBook Pro ******** surprisingly quiet and cool during games, an underrated advantage this has over a standard gaming laptop. The GPU in the M3 Max in the MacBook Pro is still slightly faster, averaging 88 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider versus 81 fps in the M4 Pro. I can’t wait to see how powerful the M4 Max is in games, but the M4 Pro is still impressive at its lower price. Battery life Apple claims the M4 Pro MacBook Pro gets up to 24 hours of battery life, two hours more than in the previous generation. That 24 hours is only available in the M4 Pro 16-inch MacBook Pro and the M4 14-inch MacBook Pro. This drops by an hour or two in the other configurations. Of course, the claimed 24 hours is only video streaming, while web browsing is up to 16 hours. Additional testing is needed to get a better sense of how long the battery lasts in different scenarios. For example, it lasted over 20 hours in our light web browsing test, which is the longest we’ve ever seen. That got me excited, especially with all the pressure coming from Qualcomm and Intel on reaching new heights in terms of battery life. The other test I ran was running the multi-core test in Cinebench on battery until the system *****. Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro ***** after only an hour and a half. I was disappointed by this result, as the M3 MacBook Air lasted over twice as long. While Cinebench is an unrealistic workload, it may hint that the MacBook Pro ***** faster in heavier tasks. Additional testing is needed, however, and I’ll update this review once I have more results and spend more time with the device. Is it worth it? Luke Larsen / Digital Trends Absolutely. The $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro went from being a questionable proposition in the previous generation to a solid value. The M4 Pro, meanwhile, is a huge step forward in just about every performance indicator: the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. Meanwhile, the other quality of life upgrades, such as the improved webcam, Thunderbolt 5, even longer battery life, and brighter screen, all sweeten the deal and cement the MacBook Pro as the absolute highest-tier laptop you can buy that’s still somehow worth the money despite how expensive it is. I haven’t tested every configuration yet, of course — no one has yet. So if you’re considering an M4 or M4 Max configuration, you may want to wait for a week or two until more testing results are published before choosing which to get. But if you were already interested in buying a MacBook Pro, just know that it’s only gotten better in this year’s update. 12. Hawthorn ******* for Brisbane AFLW qualifying final Hawthorn ******* for Brisbane AFLW qualifying final Finals debutantes Hawthorn will adopt a “nothing to lose” attitude as they look to upset the AFLW hierarchy. The Hawks, who completed a remarkable transformation this season by finishing second on the ladder, will host reigning premiers Brisbane at Ikon Park in the second qualifying final. Under new coach and former Lions assistant Daniel Webster, Hawthorn enter Sunday’s match on an eight-game winning streak. They have lost only once this season – a 26-point defeat against Adelaide in round three. Critics point to Hawthorn’s “easy” draw having played only three teams in the top eight as the reason for their success, but defender Tamara Smith swatted that suggestion away. Brisbane, arguably, have had an easier run, coming up against just two top-eight teams to finish fourth with nine wins and two losses in their premiership defence. The sides have not met this season, but the Lions hold the upper hand having won their last two fixtures. “Well, we don’t decide the draw. We had teams that we came up against and at the end of the day we won,” Smith told AAP. “We’re just excited to have our first final and we’ve got nothing to lose. “Obviously it can be a bit daunting (not having played Brisbane this year), but we’re just backing in our own system and our own game plan to get the job done. “I quite enjoy the build-up. I guess the only thing you get is FOMO, like, you will watch the games tonight and you’ll be like, *****, I wish that was me tonight.” Adding to the challenge, Hawthorn will host their home qualifying final at a venue they have never played before in the women’s competition. “We’ve never played at Ikon Park so that’s something new for us as a team, so not so much an advantage,” Smith said. “Maybe the only advantage is that we don’t have to travel … but we’ve been pretty fortunate that we’ve played a lot of different grounds. “Altering our game plan to fit different ovals isn’t a new thing for us.” While Smith admits even she is surprised at how far they have come, she ******** bullish about their chances of reaching the decider. “Our goal was always to make finals. To see it actually happen is incredible and a great testament to the work that a lot of us did,” Smith said. “You want to look forward because realistically, we’ve put ourselves in a position where we can make the grand final. “You have to understand what it takes to get to that, but definitely focusing on the process that we need to take to get to the grand final. “We have to beat Brisbane, and you have to win another final.” Source link #Hawthorn #******* #Brisbane #AFLW #qualifying #final Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  14. Intel announces Arrow Lake fix coming within a month — Robert Hallock confirms poor gaming performance is due to optimization issues Intel announces Arrow Lake fix coming within a month — Robert Hallock confirms poor gaming performance is due to optimization issues Intel’s Robert Hallock has confirmed that Intel’s Core Ultra 200S series launch did not go as planned. In a live stream with HotHardware on YouTube, Hallock revealed that optimization issues with the Arrow Lake platform were the primary cause of degradation in gaming (versus Intel’s previous-gen Raptor Lake chips). Intel identified a number of multifactored issues that caused Arrow Lake to exhibit bizarre performance characteristics in some workloads. Hallock revealed that certain (apparently random) combinations of settings at the BIOS and OS level were able to create memory latency as high as 180ns — over 2x worse than what Arrow Lake’s memory latency operates at normally (70 – 80ns). Intel’s Robert Hallock On Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200S Processor Performance Fixes! – YouTube Watch On Despite this memory latency issue, Hallock confirmed to HotHardware that Arrow Lake’s gaming performance regression compared to Raptor Lake was not related to memory latency, nor was it caused by Intel’s decision to swap to a tile-based architecture. Instead, Arrow Lake’s underwhelming gaming performance was caused by tuning and optimization issues. According to Hallock, Arrow Lake’s performance from third-party reviewers did not align with what Intel saw in its internal testing. Hallock noted there was a massive disconnect between third-party review performance and Intel’s internal testing. Intel is purportedly working on a large internal response to fix all of these issues. Hallock did not describe in detail the exact issues are plaguing Arrow Lake’s performance scores, but he did say that Intel will have a full audit that explains exactly what went wrong with the launch of Arrow Lake and an outline of what the company is going to do to fix it. Responding to a question from Tom’s Hardware managing editor Paul Alcorn, Hallock said that Intel is hoping to have at least a couple of fixes for Arrow Lake by the end of November — or by early December at the latest. That Intel recognizes Arrow Lake’s poor launch and massive optimization issues is… encouraging. The Core Ultra 200S series was arguably one of Intel’s worst launches of all time, with gaming performance coming in as the chip’s Achilles’ heel. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. NASA astronauts won’t say which one of them got ***** after almost eight months in space NASA astronauts won’t say which one of them got ***** after almost eight months in space CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Three NASA astronauts whose prolonged space station mission ended with a trip to the hospital last month declined to say Friday which one of them was *****. Astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps publicly discussed their spaceflight for the first time since returning from the International Space Station on Oct. 25. They spent nearly eight months in orbit, longer than expected because of all the trouble with Boeing’s Starliner crew capsule and rough weather, including Hurricane Milton. Soon after their SpaceX capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast, the three were taken to a hospital in nearby Pensacola along with Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, who launched with them back in March. One of the Americans ended up spending the night there for an undisclosed “medical issue.” NASA declined to say who was hospitalized or why, citing medical privacy. When asked at Friday’s news conference which one had been *****, the astronauts refused to comment. Barratt, a doctor who specializes in space medicine, declined to even describe the symptoms that the unidentified astronaut had. “Spaceflight is still something we don’t fully understand. We’re finding things that we don’t expect sometimes. This was one of those times and we’re still piecing things together on this,” said Barratt, the only member of the crew who had flown in space before. Epps said everyone is different in how they respond to space — and gravity. “That’s the part that you can’t predict,” she said, adding, “Every day is better than the day before.” Dominick said little things like sitting comfortably in a hard chair took several days to get used to once he returned. He said he didn’t use the treadmill at all during his time in space, as part of an experiment to see what equipment might be pared on a long trip to Mars. The first time he walked was when he got out of the capsule. The two astronauts who served as test pilots for Boeing’s Starliner — Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams — will remain at the space station until February, flying back with SpaceX. The game tasks you with categorizing a pool of 16 words into four secret (for now) groups by figuring out how the words relate to each other. The puzzle resets every night at midnight and each new puzzle has a varying degree of difficulty. Just like Wordle, you can keep track of your winning streak and compare your scores with friends. Some days are trickier than others — just like other NYT Games favorites The Mini and Strands. If you’re having a little trouble solving today’s puzzle, check out our Connections tips and tricks guide for some good strategies or check out the hints for today’s Connections puzzle below. And if you still can’t get it, we’ll tell you today’s answers at the very end. How to play Connections Connections is a daily game about finding common threads between words. Players must select four groups of four words without making more than three mistakes. Play now. pic.twitter.com/CqObVOqeUs — The New York Times (@nytimes) November 3, 2024 You can play Connections on the New York Times website or with the NYT Games app on iOS or Android. In Connections, you’ll be shown a grid containing 16 words — your objective is to organize these words into four sets of four by identifying the connections that link them. These sets could encompass concepts like titles of video game franchises, book series sequels, shades of red, names of chain restaurants, etc. There are generally words that seem like they could fit multiple themes, but there’s only one 100% correct answer. You’re able to shuffle the grid of words and rearrange them to help better see the potential connections. Each group is ******-coded. The yellow group is the easiest to figure out, followed by the green, blue, and purple groups. Pick four words and hit Submit. If you’re correct, the four words will be removed from the grid and the theme connecting them will be revealed. Guess incorrectly and it’ll count as a mistake. You only have four mistakes available until the game ends. Hints for today’s Connections We can help you solve today’s Connection by telling you the four themes. 17. Intel Core Ultra 9 285K vs. Ryzen 7 9800X3D: not even close Intel Core Ultra 9 285K vs. Ryzen 7 9800X3D: not even close AMD’s hotly anticipated Ryzen 7 9800X3D is finally here, and I’ll tell you right away that it’s one of the best processors you can buy. It introduces AMD’s next-gen 3D V-Cache tech, and it dominates in games. But there’s still plenty of competition coming from Intel. The recent Core Ultra 9 285K offers more cores and higher speeds overall, and although it’s a flagship CPU, the price increase on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D means the two CPUs are closer than ever in price. I threw them on the test bench to see which CPU comes out ahead, and the race wasn’t nearly as tight as I thought it would be. Specs and pricing Jacob ****** / Digital Trends The Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Core Ultra 9 285K are in different performance classes, but they’re actually much closer in price than you might expect. A price increase on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has brought it up to $479. Meanwhile, Intel has slowly reduced prices on its flagship over the last few generations. The Core Ultra 9 285K comes in at $629 right now, but prices should drop to around $589 in the near future. No doubt, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is significantly cheaper, but the gap isn’t as large as it once was. Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming There’s a good reason why there’s still a gap. The Core Ultra 9 285K is a flagship, and it comes with all of the bells and whistles that justify that label. It’s a 24-core chip that comes with 24 threads. As opposed to CPUs like the Core i9-14900K, Intel chose to ditch hyper-threading on the Core Ultra 9 285K. Instead, it focused on individual core performance. That means that the Core Ultra 9 285K is closer to a true 24-core CPU, unlike previous Intel flagships, which mostly relied on eight performance cores. Core Ultra 9 285K Ryzen 7 9800X3D Cores/Threads 24/24 (8P+16E) 8/16 Boost clock speed 5.7GHz 5.2GHz Base clock speed 3.7GHz 4.7GHz Cache (L2 + L3) 76MB 104MB TDP 250W 120W Price $629 $479 The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is in a far different category. It’s only an eight-core processor, though it has access to simultaneous multi-threading (SMT), so you still get 16 threads. Core count isn’t the strong suit of this processor. It’s the 3D V-Cache tech that AMD is using. With this design, AMD is able to pack 104MB of cache onto the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which stacks up against only 60MB of cache on the Core Ultra 9 285K. In addition, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses AMD’s next-gen 3D V-Cache tech. With previous CPUs like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD would stack additional cache on top of the CPU ****. Now, AMD puts the cache under the ****. That gives the cores more direct access to cooling, allowing AMD to push clock speeds and unlock the processor fully for overclocking. Outside of cores and cache, the Core Ultra 9 285K draws quite a bit more power than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It can climb up to 250 watts, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D tops out at 120W — and it rarely ever reaches that mark. However, both CPUs are very efficient, so the gap isn’t as large as the specs would suggest. Productivity performance Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Just based on the specs, you would assume the Core Ultra 9 285K mops the floor with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and there’s some truth to that. However, the gap between the two CPUs isn’t as large as you might suspect. Starting with the best showing for Intel, you can see Cinebench R24 above. The chart speaks for itself here. With a massive core advantage and higher clock speeds, the Core Ultra 9 285K comes out ahead in both single-core and multi-core performance. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends The Core Ultra 9 285K has been labeled the Cinebench king for a reason, though. It performs oddly well in rendering applications like Cinebench. Even in Blender, which is another rendering application, you can see the Core Ultra 9 285K’s lead start to slip. It’s much faster than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D still, but it’s not offering two times the performance across the board. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Outside of rendering, the Core Ultra 9 285K shockingly loses its grip on the performance crown. Handbrake shows that in action. The Core Ultra 9 285K completed the transcode 26% faster than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but that’s a hollow victory. Transcoding is a heavily threaded workload that should scale up to the massive core array on the Core Ultra 9 285K. Intel’s CPU is faster, no doubt, but it shouldn’t even be close. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends These performance differences have big implications in real-world apps. If you look at Premiere Pro, for example, the Core Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 7 9800X3D offer nearly identical performance. That’s bad for Intel. Premiere Pro is an app that can scale to more than eight cores, and the Core Ultra 9 285K just isn’t showing off those benefits. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Worse, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D was actually faster than the Core Ultra 9 285K in Photoshop. It’s faster by a significant margin, too. Photoshop isn’t a very demanding app, and it doesn’t scale past eight cores. But it illustrates the inconsistent performance of the Core Ultra 9 285K, despite what its specs would suggest. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Elsewhere, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D leads in Y-Cruncher. This app calculates Pi, and although I don’t think most readers here are buying a CPU for that purpose, it offers a nice window into an advantage of the AMD chip. It supports AVX-512 instructions, which Y-Cruncher uses. Some AI applications, as well as PS3 emulation, use AVX-512 instructions. Despite that, the Core Ultra 9 285K doesn’t support these instructions. That leads to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D showing a sizable lead in Y-Cruncher despite its clear core disadvantage. The Core Ultra 9 285K is a better choice than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D if you’re mainly concerned with productivity performance, but it’s still not a good choice. AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X is your best bet for productivity. Keeping these two CPUs in isolation, however, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D actually comes out ahead, and that’s due to how it balances acceptable productivity performance with a massive gaming advantage. Gaming performance Jacob ****** / Digital Trends I’ll let the chart above do most of the speaking here. It’s not even close when it comes to the gaming performance of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Core Ultra 9 285K. AMD’s CPU is universally faster in the 10 games I tested, and I can’t imagine there are many games — if any at all — where Intel shows a commanding lead. Even worse news for Intel is that these results aren’t solely on the back of AMD’s 3D V-Cache. How can I tell? Look at games like *********’s Creed Mirage, Returnal, Red ***** Redemption 2, and ****** Myth: Wukong. All of these games care way more about your graphics card than your processor, and the margins between the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Core Ultra 9 285K are narrow. But AMD’s chip is still faster across the board. It’s not meaningfully faster, sure, but these titles showcase that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is just a faster gaming CPU overall, 3D V-Cache or not. In the titles where the additional cache shines, it’s a bloodbath. You see that very clearly in F2 2022 and Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail, where the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is over 50 frames ahead. That’s a huge margin, and it largely comes down to the cache. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 see a big bump, too, which is surprising. Cyberpunk 2077 can scale well to a lot of cores, which the Core Ultra 9 285K offers, but the Ryzen 7 9800X3D still comes out ahead despite its modest core count. It’s not a surprise that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D comes out ahead on gaming performance, but the margins are larger than I expected. Usually, I see a slight bump for a 3D V-Cache CPU over a flagship, but AMD absolutely crushes Intel here. A decisive win Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Between a lower price, much better gaming performance, and shockingly competent productivity performance, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the clear choice here. It comes with a price hike compared to the previous generation, but it’s still far cheaper than the Core Ultra 9 285K. It’s also based on the AM5 platform, so you can save even more money if you already have a Ryzen 7000 CPU that you want to upgrade from. The Core Ultra 9 285K doesn’t really have a spot in the current landscape of CPUs. It’s an impressive chip, and certainly an interesting one, but it still doesn’t make a lot of sense to buy one — be it for gaming or productivity. It’s expensive and rarely maxes out on power, unless you just sit at your PC and run Cinebench all day. 20. Scalpers are jacking up the price of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Scalpers are jacking up the price of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Blink and you missed it — the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is sold out everywhere. As you can read in our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, it’s one of the best processors you can buy, and just minutes after the first listings went live, the CPU went out of stock. Scalpers on eBay are already capitalizing. Dozens of listings are live, most of them over $900. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has a suggested retail price of $479. These are “preorder” listing on eBay. Quotes are important here because, unlike a traditional preorder, these smaller sellers on eBay purchase a chip for list price and then flip it for a much higher price. In other words, scalping. None of the listings have sold yet, though one eBay shopper picked up the chip for $564 yesterday. These early prices will drop once the Ryzen 7 9800X3D comes back in stock, but you should expect high prices for a while. On the AMD subreddit, some lucky shoppers are celebrating that they were able to purchase a CPU right as the listing went live. One buyer said the CPU went out of stock on Newegg as they were checking out, but they were able to find an early listing on Amazon and still secure a unit. Listings are live on Newegg, Amazon, and B&H Photo, though they’re all out of stock at the moment. Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming On AMD’s official online store, the processor is also sold out, despite the CPU being limited to one unit per shopper. Thankfully, there’s still one place you can find the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for list price — Micro Center. As the brick-and-mortar retailer often does, it’s limiting the Ryzen 7 9800X3D to in-store purchases only. If you have a Micro Center near you, you should be able to pick up the CPU for list price, at least through the next couple of days. Although scalpers are already trying to make a profit on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the price shouldn’t stay high for long. Especially online, we typically see new hardware launches released in waves. As the Ryzen 7 9800X3D becomes more readily available, prices on the secondhand market will drop. However, given how quickly the CPU sold out, there’s a chance it could take a few months before prices stabilize fully. 22. Build Shadow The Hedgehog’s Head Out Of 720 Lego Bricks For Only $56 Build Shadow The Hedgehog’s Head Out Of 720 Lego Bricks For Only $56 Sonic the Hedgehog fans can get the recently released Shadow Lego set for its lowest price yet as part of Target’s Early ****** Friday Lego *****. The 720-piece Shadow the Hedgehog display model is discounted from $70 down to only $56 through Saturday, November 9. That means you don’t have much time to take advantage of this deal and the dozens of other notable Lego offers at Target. The new deal is a bit better than the one Target offered ahead of Halloween that dropped the price to $59.49. The set launched on October 1 and is exclusive to Target and the Lego Store. It’s the second Sonic the Hedgehog Lego display model for adults. You could argue it’s technically the first, because the Green Hill Zone display model was released under the Lego Ideas umbrella at the beginning of 2022, well before the official Sonic series debuted in August last year. And if you haven’t played Sonic X Shadow Generations, you can snag a copy for Switch for $40 (was $50) at Woot. $56 (was $70) | Lowest Price Yet Once fully built, the 720-piece Shadow the Hedgehog Lego set is 8 x 7 x 8.5 inches. While it’s not a massive display model–the eight-inch height includes the stand–it’s certainly one of the more budget-friendly Lego model kits based on a video game that’s geared toward adults. It also has multiple Easter eggs, including a Chaos Emerald, several well-known objects from *****’s long-running series, and a few other nods to Sonic lore. Lego’s age rating is 18-plus on this set, but kids with experience building the various Star Wars and Marvel helmet models should have no problem piecing this together. The age rating likely has more to do with it being designed for display. Plus, it’s based on Shadow’s 2001 debut in Sonic Adventure 2 for ***** Dreamcast. Chances are most kids who like the Sonic movies and recent games probably aren’t familiar with Sonic Adventure 2 (or even the Dreamcast). Shadow has also appeared in a couple of Sonic the Hedgehog playsets as a Lego minifigure, including this one that comes with a motorcycle. You can check out a full list of Sonic Lego sets below–many of them are discounted right now. Sonic the Hedgehog Lego Sets Amazon has some terrific deals on other Lego Sonic building kits, including Amy’s Animal Rescue Island for only $29 (was $50), the aforementioned Lego Ideas Green Hill Zone display model for $64 (was $80), and Dr. Eggman’s ****** Egg ****** for $48 (was $60). You can pair your big Shadow the Hedgehog set with a Shadow minifigure and his motorcycle for only $16 (was $20). Lego Shadow the Hedgehog Gallery PC players can get Sonic X Shadow Generations for a discount, too. Fanatical is selling Sonic X Shadow Generations Steam keys for $43.49. Alternatively, you can grab the Digital Deluxe Edition for $52.19 (was $60) and get some neat extras, including multiple skins and a digital soundtrack and art book. Shadow will be played by Keanu Reeves in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is set to premiere in theaters on December 20. If you want to rewatch the first two movies and Paramount’s Knuckles miniseries, which takes place between the second and third films, Amazon has collectible steelbook editions for cheap, including a two-movie steelbook collection on 4K Blu-ray for only $28. 23. Jack Dorsey dramatically shutters Block’s TBD crypto unit Jack Dorsey dramatically shutters Block’s TBD crypto unit Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter Inc., speaks during the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, Florida, U.S., on Friday, June 4, 2021. Eva Marie Uzcategui | Bloomberg | Getty Images During the crypto-crazed summer of 2021, when memecoins like dogecoin and Shiba Inu were rocketing alongside bitcoin and ethereum, Square founder Jack Dorsey announced that his payments company was starting a new business unit, with the goal of “making it easy to create non-custodial, permissionless, and decentralized financial services.” “Our primary focus is #Bitcoin,” Dorsey proclaimed on Twitter. On Block‘s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday, CFO Amrita Ahuja said Block has “made some recent decisions with respect to some of our emerging initiatives” and is “winding down our TBD efforts.” Block continues to own a hefty amount of bitcoin on its balance sheet, with the current value of its holdings swelling to $630 million. After peaking in 2021, Block shares lost more than 80% of their value before bottoming in October of last year. Block said in late 2023 that it would cut its headcount — then about 13,000 staffers — by as much as 1,000 by the end of 2024. Shares of Block were down about 1% at market close on Friday, after the company reported revenue that trailed estimates and issued weaker ****** profit guidance than some analysts were expecting. 24. These are the most overbought stocks after Trump’s win this week These are the most overbought stocks after Trump’s win this week Several software companies could be due for a pullback after the stock market’s roaring rally this week, fueled by president-elect Donald Trump’s election victory as well as robust quarterly earnings reports. Major U.S. indexes are on track for major wins this month, with the S & P 500 up roughly 5% and the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average higher by 5.3% — putting both on track for their best gain in a year. The Nasdaq has jumped 6.4% so far in November. Investors are buoyed by the prospect of less government regulation of business, more dealmaking and proposed tax cuts under a second Trump administration. But amid these bullish moves and renewed market enthusiasm, shares of some companies that have raced ahead this month could be due for a pullback according to one popular market yardstick. CNBC Pro screened for stocks that are considered technically overbought using their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI, a momentum indicator used in technical analysis that measures the speed and magnitude of a stock price. Companies with a 14-day RSI higher than 70 are generally regarded as overbought, signaling a potential pullback ahead, while a 14-day RSI below 30 suggests a stock is oversold and may be poised for a bounce higher. Shares of video game makers Take-Two Interactive Software and Electronic Arts are two of the stocks that are technically overbought right now, according to the analysis. Take-Two shares added more than 8% this week on the back of better-than-expected quarterly results. The company reported $1.47 billion in revenue in its fiscal second quarter, topping analysts’ consensus estimate of $1.43 billion, according to LSEG. Several brokers adjusted their price targets on Take-Two after its earnings results. Morgan Stanley kept an overweight rating while lifting its target by $15 to $200, saying the company “continued showing strong results, particularly in mobile, as the focus ******** on [Grand Theft Auto] the pipeline.” That suggests 11.6% potential upside. Take-Two’s RSI is nearly 84.8, however, suggesting the stock has risen too far, too fast and may prove vulnerable to a downdraft. Electronic Arts, another software company, has an RSI even higher, at about 85.2. The stock is up 5% this month, after its second-quarter net bookings came in better than expected and set a quarterly record. Analysts were enthused by revenue and strong ********** from the company’s sports portfolio, especially college football, and its recent Dragon Age: The Veilguard video game launch. The most overbought stock this week was human capital management software company Dayforce, with an RSI of 92.4. The stock was also considered overbought in late October. Shares are up more than 33% over the past month and hit a new 52-week high on Friday. Other stocks that could be due for a pullback are Paycom Software and pharmaceutical companies Incyte and Gilead Sciences . In addition, take a look at the market’s most oversold names from our CNBC Pro screener: Packaged food and consumer goods companies General Mills , Coca-Cola and Keurig Dr Pepper are now considered oversold. Consumer staples has been one of the slower-growing sectors this year, and is down 1.7% this quarter. But higher prices and expectations of normalizing pricing, which helped Coke guide its organic revenue growth this year to the high end of a prior forecast, could lead the stocks higher. Other oversold stocks include power generation company AES , as well as radio frequency equipment maker Qorvo and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals — the latter two of which were also oversold the previous week.
