  1. Researchers develop Python code that is compatible with in-memory computing — Python commands converted into machine code to be ********* in the computer’s memory Researchers develop Python code that is compatible with in-memory computing — Python commands converted into machine code to be ********* in the computer’s memory In-memory computing has been in development for a while; however, software has yet to be released or compatible with this computing architecture. Techxplore reports that Technion researchers have developed software that works with processing in memory designs, specifically with Python code. The researchers purportedly developed a theory for building a programming language with in-memory computing in mind. The software they created converts Python commands into machine code ********* directly in the computer’s memory. This new computer language is dubbed PyPIM (Python Processing-in-Memory). Just like API conversion layers such as DXVK (DirectX to Vulkan), PyPIM is a conversion layer that converts conventional Python code into code that can run on this new type of computing method. As a result, Python programmers can write the same way they write for conventional computers and don’t need to adapt their writing style for in-memory computing. Techxplore reveals that software is one of the crucial aspects of in-memory computer processing that has remained utterly unexplored until now. Compute code written for conventional computers has purportedly “barely changed” since the 1940s. Professor Shahar Kvatinsky from the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering reveals that writing code for in-memory computing is so radically different from conventional computing that “…some of the existing building blocks of computer science unusable…” Without a conversion layer such as PyPIM, developing applications compatible with processor-in-memory support would have been very difficult. The low-level machine code would need to be rewritten to accommodate processing some calculations in memory and the rest on the CPU. In-memory computing is a new way of computing that aims to solve the memory latency problem. As the name suggests, in-memory computing enables the system memory to do some calculations the CPU would do otherwise, cutting down the amount of data that must be transferred between the CPU and DRAM. Samsung and TSMC are actively working on memory capable of doing this, featuring MRAM memory cells. In-memory computing is still in the prototype phase, but progress is being made on the hardware side to make it a viable technology. With the help of conversion layers like PyPIM, software should be developed to support this computing method. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 2. Sephora says it did not donate to Trump campaign, after online calls for boycott Sephora says it did not donate to Trump campaign, after online calls for boycott Beauty retailer Sephora has said it did not make large donations to President-elect Donald Trump‘s campaign, after viral social media posts called for a boycott of the company and other popular retail outlets over alleged donations. In a statement, a spokesman for Sephora told CBS News it was aware of “incorrect information circulating on social media,” and said Sephora “does not make corporate donations to political candidates. Sephora’s mission is to create a welcoming beauty shopping experience for all.” Calls for a boycott grew after viral social media posts, including one TikTok video with over 11 million views, alleging Sephora and other retailers donated to Trump. The video ended with the line, “I hope we all understand the assignment for this Christmas season.” The individual who posted the video did not respond to a request for comment. Laws governing company donations The Federal Election Campaign Act prohibits corporations from using general funds from making direct contributions to candidates in federal elections. However, corporations may set up political action committees (PACs) funded by voluntary employee contributions. Or companies can make unlimited contributions to Super PACs which indirectly support candidates through advertising and advocacy. Executives and other corporate employees may contribute as individuals to candidates, and information about donations once a donor contributes more than $200 are publicly available, according to Brendan Glavin, Deputy Research Director of Open Secrets, a campaign finance watchdog group. “When you see those boycott lists, what you may be seeing is an aggregation of all the money that employees of the organization gave to the candidate,” said Glavin. Campaign finance records indicate that individuals associated with Sephora’s parent company LVMH, a France-based company with ********* divisions, donated $318 to Trump’s campaign during the 2024 election cycle, according to Open Secrets. By comparison, they donated a total of over $35,000 to Harris’ campaign. Foreign nationals are barred from contributing to federal elections, and only LVMH employees who are U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents can legally donate. Open Secrets analysis also shows LVMH did not contribute to any campaigns through PACs in 2024. The U.S. subsidiaries of foreign-based companies can legally form PACs funded by ********* employees or direct contributions to Super PACs as long as no foreign nationals direct the contribution. Sephora’s Americas divisions’ former chief executive, Jean-Andre Rougeot, donated exclusively to Democratic campaigns, FEC records show, and its current CEO, who took her position in April 2024, has not made political donations. Home Depot, Kohl’s and other companies deny donations Other companies, including Kohl’s and Home Depot, also refuted social media claims of Trump campaign contributions after calls for boycotts. A spokesman for Kohl’s told CBS News, “Kohl’s does not make monetary contributions to political candidates or campaigns, does not support political organizations, and does not have a company-sponsored Political Action Committee.” FEC records show no political donations from Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury this cycle. And overall, employees and individuals associated with Kohl’s contributed more to Harris’ presidential campaign than to Trump’s, records indicate. A spokesman for Home Depot told CBS News, “The Home Depot (and The Home Depot Foundation) does not give money to presidential campaigns or endorse presidential candidates.” According to FEC filings and analysis by Open Secrets, the company and its affiliated PAC made no direct donations to Trump’s campaign, However, Home Depot’s corporate PAC donated $270,000 to both the National *********** Senatorial and Congressional Committees. Overall, employees and associates of Home Depot acting individually gave more to Harris’ campaign than to Trump’s, with Harris receiving $197,312 to Trump’s $115,858, according to Open Secrets. 6. Meta cuts the price of its ad-free plan by 40 percent in a bid to sate EU regulators Meta cuts the price of its ad-free plan by 40 percent in a bid to sate EU regulators Meta has long been at loggerheads with ********* Union officials over its approach to targeted Facebook and Instagram ads. The company is hoping to placate regulators with to its ad model in the bloc, which includes lowering the price of its . Starting November 13, the plan will cost 40 percent less — €6 ($6.36) per month for signups via the web and €8 ($8.48) for those who subscribe on an iOS or Android device. The fee for each additional Facebook and Instagram account is €4 per month on the web and €5 via mobile. The company will automatically drop current subscribers down to the lower pricing. It says that it will once again ask users in the bloc if they’d like to sign up. When they see this prompt (which can only be ignored for a certain ******* of time), there will be a third option for EU Facebook and Instagram users to choose from. Those who don’t want to pay for a subscription can instead opt to only view ads that are based on what they see in a given session in the apps. Meta will also factor in a few key data markers such as “a person’s age, location, gender and how a person engages with ads.” These less-personalized ads naturally won’t be as tailored to a given user’s interests, the company notes. As such, people are perhaps less likely to click on such ads. To make up for that (and make sure this option doesn’t hit Meta in the pocket too hard), folks who choose the less-personalized ads option will sometimes encounter unskippable ads. According to , these will be displayed full screen. “Such ad breaks are common across other services, and are already offered by many of our competitors,” Meta argues. “This change will help us continue to provide value to advertisers which ensures we can offer people a less personalized ads experience at no charge.” Targeted ads are Meta’s biggest revenue driver, but EU officials have reportedly been pressuring the company to offer a free, less-personalized option in its apps. Meta has argued that would negatively impact its bottom line. Although it has seemingly caved to officials’ requests, the unskippable ad aspect may be construed as malicious compliance, as it worsens the user experience. Meta claims that these changes to its ad model “meet EU regulator demands and go beyond what’s required” by the bloc’s laws. The company introduced its ad-free subscription a year ago to comply with laws such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA), as well as stricter interpretations of the General Data Protection Regulation. It was previously ordered to from users in the bloc before showing them personalized ads. The EU didn’t take too kindly to the paid ad-free approach, however. An investigation into the “consent or pay” model is ongoing. In July, the EU said that in its preliminary findings, Meta was with this plan. These latest changes are said to be Meta’s attempt to settle the case, but according to the Journal, the EU’s discussions with the company haven’t concluded. The bloc’s regulatory body has until late March to finish its investigation and make a final decision. If it determines that Meta has indeed violated the DMA, the company could be on the ***** for a fine of up to 10 percent of its annual global revenue. Based on its total revenue for 2023, it could have to pay up as much as $13 billion or so. If you buy something through a link in this article, we may earn commission. 7. SpaceX targets Starship flight next week – just a month after last one SpaceX targets Starship flight next week – just a month after last one Starship during a high-altitude test flight SpaceX SpaceX is making preparations for the sixth test flight of the world’s most powerful rocket, Starship. The company has been taking a “fail fast, learn fast” approach to research and development more akin to the world of Silicon Valley than the aerospace industry, and the pace of launches only appears to be speeding up. When is the next flight? SpaceX says on its website that it aims to conduct the sixth test flight of Starship as early as 18 November. This claim is backed up by the Federal Aviation Administration having issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) warning of a rocket launch in the area of SpaceX’s launch pads in Boca Chica, Texas. The 30-minute launch window will open at 4pm local time (10pm GMT). It took SpaceX 18 months to carry out the first five Starship test flights, with the fifth taking place in the middle of October. If the company carries out the sixth next week, it will mean a gap of just over one month since the last flight – its fastest turnaround yet. What will SpaceX attempt in flight 6? In many ways, flight 6 will be a repeat of flight 5, but with a few key differences. The booster stage will again attempt a “chopstick” landing, in which the craft is grabbed and secured as it returns to the launchpad, allowing it to be lowered to the ground. This approach is designed to eventually allow the booster to be re-used multiple times and massively reduce the cost of putting payloads into orbit. The upper stage will reach space, carry out a partial orbit and then re-enter Earth’s atmosphere for a splash landing in the Indian Ocean. But this time, the upper stage will attempt to reignite one of its Raptor engines while in space in order to collect valuable operational data. It will also test new heat shield designs during re-entry. Another difference is that the launch will take place later in the day so that the landing of the upper stage in the Indian Ocean can be filmed in daylight, ensuring greater detail. Previous missions have seen night landings and therefore footage – while cinematic and dramatic – hasn’t given engineers as much insight as video of a daytime landing will. What happened during previous Starship launches? Test flight 1 on 20 April 2023 saw three of the booster stage’s 33 engines fail to ignite. The rocket later span out of control and self-destructed. The second test flight on 18 November 2023 got further, gaining enough altitude that the booster and upper stages separated as planned. The booster stage ultimately exploded before reaching ground level and the upper stage self-destructed, although not before successfully reaching space. Test flight 3 on 14 March 2024 was at least a partial success, as the upper stage reached space once more, but it ******* to return to ground level intact. The next flight, on 6 June, saw the upper stage reach an altitude of more than 200 kilometres and travel at over 27,000 kilometres per hour. Both the booster and the upper stage completed soft splashdowns in the ocean. Test flight 5 was the most ambitious to date, with Starship’s Super Heavy booster dropping back to the launch pad and being safely caught by SpaceX’s launch tower, called Mechazilla, in a pair of “chopsticks”. It is equipped with a pair of “chopsticks” to grab the craft at a specific point and secure it, allowing it to be lowered to the ground. 8. The climate startup challenging Tesla on electrifying big rigs The climate startup challenging Tesla on electrifying big rigs On the road to electrifying vehicles, cars and small trucks are getting there. Big rigs, however, pose ******* hurdles. The trouble with electrifying tractor-trailer trucks is that the tractor component needs more power than the current charging infrastructure can handle and the necessary charging time is long. Major truck manufacturers like Volvo, Freightliner and Tesla are introducing electric tractor-trailer trucks, but that is still a tiny and inefficient market. Big rigs make up just 10% of the vehicles on the road, but they account for nearly 30% of total vehicle carbon emissions. Now one startup, California-based Range Energy, is focused not on the tractor but the trailer. They are introducing electrified trailers that power and propel themselves so the tractor has less to pull. “Everything that is built into the tractor is really built to manage the load of the trailer properly, and what we’re saying is, ‘Well, why don’t we do that directly through our Range system by electrifying the trailer in a way that has never been done before?'” said Ali Javidan, CEO of Range Energy. The Range Energy system incorporates batteries, a motor that powers one of the trailer’s dual axles and what Javidan refers to as a ‘smart kingpin’ to improve the truck’s efficiency. “When I push this button to activate the system, the trailer follows me,” Javidan said as he demonstrated the system. “It doesn’t matter if I’m an old Peterbilt semi-truck or a brand new Tesla semi or just me pulling on it with the system activated. The trailer’s mission is to make itself feel weightless.” The electrified trailer can also refrigerate itself as well as power onboard communications and security systems. It does all of that at a fraction of the cost of diesel. “If we were to take one of these fleets that runs 3,000 trailers and run it through the range system and essentially incorporate the range system into their fleet, we’re looking at 100 million pounds of CO2 saved per year,” Javidan said. “But even better than that, it equates to about $50 million in fuel savings alone.” Northern Refrigerated Transportation is piloting the Range trailers in California. The company has previously tried electric tractors but the long charging times were a hurdle, said Ricky Souza, COO at Northern Refrigerated Transportation. Range Energy’s “trailers seem more of a natural fit because we have to load them, and we load them at night” while the trailers charge, Souza said. “So it’s not more dependent on a driver waiting for it.” There are, however, some major roadblocks that Northern Refrigerated Transportation must overcome before the company can electrify its entire fleet of more than 300 trucks. “There’s definitely some infrastructure challenges, like power to the buildings or properties and getting it, and the cost of the unit is more,” Souza said. “That’s part of doing the due diligence to see if you’ll make it back into fuel savings.” Range Energy has raised $31.5 million so far, and it is backed by R7, UP.Partners, Trousdale Ventures and Yamaha Motor Ventures. The appeal of Range Energy’s technology is the startup’s different approach to tackling the challenge of electrifying tractor-trailers, said Tyler Engh, R7’s founder and general manager. “Seventy percent of all freight in the ******* States is done by trucks, and there’s no one touching a trailer, so if we can electrify the trailer, we could accelerate mass adoption for hybridization or electrification on current fleets that have diesel semis,” Engh said. “The size of what this company could become is exactly what venture capital is set up to do. It could be a humongous return for us.” As in the EV market for cars, charging infrastructure is still not where it needs to be, but Javidan says trucking companies can leverage the power that’s available at loading docks, as Northern Refrigerated Transportation is doing. Javidan added that Range Energy is able to size the battery pack much closer to what you see in a passenger vehicle than what you see in the large commercial vehicles that are coming out from other big rig companies. CNBC producer Lisa Rizzolo contributed to this piece. Source link #climate #startup #challenging #Tesla #electrifying #big #rigs Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images 23andMe on Tuesday reported declining revenue in its most recent quarter, a day after the company said it will cut 40% of its workforce and shutter its therapeutics business as part of a business restructuring plan. The genetics company reported $44.1 million in revenue for the fiscal second quarter, down from $50 million in the same ******* last year. 23andMe’s net loss narrowed to $59.1 million, or a $2.32 per share, from $75.27 million, or $3.17 per share, a year ago. The embattled genetic testing provider said on Monday that it’s eliminating more than 200 jobs, discontinuing all of its therapeutics programs and winding down its ongoing clinical trials “as quickly as practical.” It’s evaluating strategic options like asset sales and licensing agreements to “maximize the value” of the therapeutic programs, the release said. “We are taking these difficult but necessary actions as we restructure 23andMe and focus on the long-term success of our core consumer business and research partnerships,” 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki, said in the release Monday. “I want to thank our team for their hard work and dedication to our mission. We are fully committed to supporting the employees impacted by this transition.” The company said on Tuesday that it’s looking to potentially raise additional capital. Shares of 23andMe were down slightly on Tuesday. They’ve slumped 75% this year after losing more than half their value in 2023, pushing the company’s market cap toward $100 million. Wojcicki, who co-founded 23andMe in 2006, has been working to keep the company afloat after it faced the risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq. Shares were hovering below $1 until 23andMe announced a 1-for-20 reverse stock split in October. In September, all seven of the company’s independent directors abruptly resigned from the board, writing in a letter that they disagreed with Wojcicki about the “strategic direction for the company.” Three new independent directors were appointed to the board late last month. “We have fulfilled our obligations as a public company and regained compliance with the NASDAQ listing standards by reconstituting our board and executing a reverse stock split,” Wojcicki said during 23andMe’s earnings call on Tuesday. Wojcicki has repeatedly stated her intention to take 23andMe private, though she didn’t address the plans on Tuesday. In a September filing with the SEC, she said she would not consider third-party takeover proposals, and said the “best path forward” is for her to take the company private. 23andMe declined to comment. Exclusive: Lara Croft’s Original Comic Adventures Return In Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Exclusive: Lara Croft’s Original Comic Adventures Return In Tomb Raider Colossal Collection At the height of its popularity, Tomb Raider was everywhere, from video games to big-budget movies. Tomb Raider comic books were also produced, and if you’ve been looking to get your hands on the first run of issues printed by Top Cow, then prepare yourself for some good news. Dark Horse has announced Tomb Raider: Colossal Collection Volume 1, a gigantic reprint of Lara Croft’s first adventures that began in 1999. Priced at $99, this massive 888-page hardcover is now available to preorder and will be released on June 25, 2025. Tomb Raider: Colossal Collection Volume One Top Cow’s Tomb Raider comics have long been out of print, and the older “Archive” editions fetch an astronomical sum on the reseller market, often going for hundreds of dollars each. This hardcover looks to be a nearly comprehensive collection, as it contains issues #1-24 and #26-34 from the first run. In case you’re wondering, issue #25 saw Lara Croft team up with Witchblade. Tomb Raider was licensed to Top Cow at the time, and with the rights lapsed, it’s likely that there were probably a few legal issues that made it easier to omit that particular comic book rather than include it. The Tomb Raider series ran for 50 issues from 1999 to 2005, and it was pretty popular as it was released during the peak of Tomb Raider-mania. The comics were set in the same continuity as the games developed by Core Design, making a few tweaks to Lara Croft’s story along the way. A pretty talented roster of artists and writers were involved in this series, including Dan Jurgens, Adam Hughes, Michael Turner, Andy Park, Marc Silvestri, David Finch, and several others. 13. Voyager 2’s Historic Flyby of Uranus Exposes Rare Magnetic Distortion Voyager 2’s Historic Flyby of Uranus Exposes Rare Magnetic Distortion A recent analysis of 38-year-old data from NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft has provided fresh insights into the unique magnetosphere of Uranus, according to a study published on November 11 in Nature Astronomy. During Voyager 2’s 1986 flyby, Uranus’ magnetosphere was found to be unexpectedly distorted by a blast of solar wind. The findings suggest that the planet’s magnetic field behaves unlike any other in the solar system. Findings Highlight Unusual Magnetic Structures Jamie Jasinski, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology, and lead author of the study, noted that Voyager 2’s timing happened to coincide with an intense solar wind event, a rare occurrence near Uranus. This compression of Uranus’s magnetosphere, seen only around 4% of the time, is thought to be responsible for the unique measurements Voyager captured. Had the spacecraft arrived even a week earlier, Jasinski observed, these conditions would likely have been different, possibly leading to alternative conclusions about Uranus’s magnetic characteristics. Unlike Earth, Uranus exhibits a complex “open-closed” magnetic process, influenced by its extreme axial tilt. This tilt subjects Uranus to highly variable solar wind effects, resulting in a magnetosphere that opens and closes cyclically. Implications for Future Uranus Exploration The study’s conclusions go beyond Uranus itself, offering insights into the magnetic behaviours of its outermost moons, including Titania and Oberon. These moons, it turns out, lie within Uranus’s magnetosphere rather than outside it, making them candidates for investigations into subsurface oceans through magnetic field detection. As Jasinski highlighted, these conditions would simplify detecting any magnetic signatures that suggest liquid beneath the moons’ icy surfaces. While Voyager 2 ******** the only mission to visit Uranus, the study’s findings underscore a growing interest in exploring the ice giant in greater detail. 15. Hearing of Executive Vice-President-designate Stéphane Séjourné | News Hearing of Executive Vice-President-designate Stéphane Séjourné | News In his introductory statement to the Industry, Research and Energy, Internal Market and Consumers, Economic Affairs and Environment Public Health and Food Safety committees, Mr Séjourné announced a future pact on clean industry to lay the foundations “for an industrial policy suited to our time”, stressing that the EU will need to decarbonise and reindustrialise simultaneously. He advocated focusing on the strategic sectors with the highest potential and socioeconomic impact, promoting lowering energy prices, and developing thriving markets for products such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. Mr. Séjourné promised to reduce bureaucracy for companies and pledged to introduce an SME passport to avoid firms having to constantly prove their legal status. He emphasised that huge investments are needed to prevent the most innovative companies from leaving the EU. To win the global investment battle, the Commissioner-designate plans to set up an EU Competitiveness Fund and use InvestEU to increase public funding and create synergies between public and private investment. Mr. Séjourné underlined his commitment to strengthening the single market, stressing that: “Right now we have 27 markets.” The Commissioner-designate also promised that EU public procurements would take criteria such as quality, sustainability and resilience into greater account in the future. Support to the steel, automotive and aeronautic industries MEPs questioned the Executive-Vice-President designate on his plans to support the ********* steel industry, and asked whether the Commission would stick to agreed decarbonisation targets in the automotive sector. Mr Séjourné replied that the steel industry may receive additional support from the ********* Investment Bank. He stressed that the automotive industry requires predictability and pledged to act on the demand side to help carmakers meet their targets. MEPs also asked about possible support for the aeronautics industry. Mr Séjourné replied that the sector will be covered in the Clean Industrial Deal. Several MEPs inquired on how to fill the annual investment gap of 800 billion Euro mentioned in the Draghi report. The Commissioner-designate pointed to the creation of a Savings and Investments Union and of new savings products to stimulate household savings. To improve SME access to finance, he committed to pursuing funds from capital markets instead of relying predominantly on banks. Other MEPs questioned the Commissioner-designate about protecting EU companies from unfair competition and EU consumers from below-standard goods made in third countries. In his reply, Mr Séjourné stressed the need to finalise customs reform to ensure better checks at EU borders. Press point At the end of the hearing, Committee Chairs Aurore Lalucq (ECON), Anna Cavazzini (IMCO) and Antonio Decaro (ENVI) held a press point outside the meeting room: watch it here. Next steps The committee chair and political group coordinators will meet without delay after the hearing to assess the performance and qualification of the Commissioner-designate. Based on the committee recommendations, the Conference of Presidents (EP President Metsola and political group chairs) is set to conduct the final evaluation and declare the hearings closed on 21 November. Once the Conference of Presidents declares all hearings closed, the evaluation letters will be published. The election by MEPs of the full college of Commissioners (by a majority of the votes cast, by roll-call) is currently scheduled to take place during the 25-28 November plenary session in Strasbourg. 16. Sue Gray will not take up new regions role Sue Gray will not take up new regions role Sue Gray will not take up her post as the prime minister’s envoy to the nations and regions, Downing Street has confirmed. She was initially appointed to the newly-created role after departing as Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff last month, saying she “risked becoming a distraction”. The government had previously said she was taking a short break before starting her new position. But a No 10 spokeswoman said she had “now decided not to take it up”. The news was first reported by the Financial Times and the Guardian. A friend of Ms Gray said: “Sue has taken a decision not to take the role. She’s going to focus on other things.” They added: “She’s taken time to think about it properly, talking to stakeholders, but ultimately she’s decided she doesn’t want to do it.” A Downing Street source told the BBC: “We think she has made the right decision.” However, the Guardian reported that her decision came after she was warned the PM was likely to rescind the job offer. Asked whether the offer was withdrawn or if she walked away, a No 10 spokeswoman said Ms Gray’s appointment had previously been agreed but “she has since decided not to take up the role”. She said there were “no immediate plans” to appoint a new envoy to the nations and regions, but the role would be kept “under review”. The spokeswoman added that Ms Gray had been “uniquely placed” to hold the position, but working with the nations and regions remained a “huge priority” for the government. Downing Street had previously said the job would be “vital”. However, it had not published details of Ms Gray’s new responsibilities, and last month she did not attend the first-ever meeting of a new Council of Nations and Regions. Ms Gray left as the PM’s chief of staff after just three months in the role, following weeks of negative headlines and briefings against her, including a row over her salary. She was replaced by Morgan McSweeney, with whom she had reportedly clashed in his previous role as Sir Keir’s chief political adviser. Ms Gray, who became a household name after leading the government’s internal inquiry into the Partygate scandal, left the civil service to become a senior adviser to Sir Keir last year. Arrow Lake and Zen 5 motherboards should be getting cheaper soon — Asus files a slew of budget Intel and AMD boards with regulators Arrow Lake and Zen 5 motherboards should be getting cheaper soon — Asus files a slew of budget Intel and AMD boards with regulators Asus has registered over 60 motherboards at the EEC (Eurasian Economic Commission) per Harukaze at X – in preparation for CES 2025, where Intel and AMD are expected to announce budget 65W Arrow Lake and Ryzen 9000 CPUs alongside affordable motherboards for the masses. Interestingly, there’s also the mention of a new B850E chipset that AMD never formally revealed. The latest X870 and Z890 motherboards are far out of reach of the average customer as they’re oriented towards enthusiasts. Following tradition, Intel and AMD will announce their budget CPUs and motherboards for mainstream customers at CES. As it stands, AM5 is still more affordable than LGA1851 – mainly due to the existence of last-gen 600-series motherboards. It is crucial for Intel that these budget-friendly boards hit shelves to boost LGA1851 adoption rates. On the flip side, PC builders looking to snag AMD’s latest Zen 5 processors need not worry, as Ryzen 9000 CPUs can slot into existing A620, B850, and X670 motherboards. The EEC filing reports that Asus is prepping a large number of budget motherboards—for both AM5 and LGA1851—expected to arrive by Q1 2025. On the Intel side, we have the H810 and B860 chipsets for consumers as well as the business—and workstation-oriented Q870 and W880 chipsets. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: EEC) (Image credit: EEC) (Image credit: EEC) AMD’s end of the ring features the already-revealed B840, B850, and a mysterious B850E chipset. For context, AMD never announced a B850E chipset as the primary distinction between B650 and B650E last generation was the mandatory inclusion of an x16 PCIe Gen 5.0 slot for the GPU, but that’s now included on the base B850 this time around. This is likely a typo, or perhaps AMD is working on an “Extreme” variant with some other neat features because the “E” suffix in this list has only been mentioned on high-end ROG Strix motherboards. As far as platform support goes, AMD’s AM5 socket will be supported into 2027 and might be compatible with Zen 6 as well. Intel hasn’t made a formal statement regarding the longevity of LGA-1851, which has left many early adopters shirked. All in all, expect official announcements from AMD and Intel at CES 2025, with supply following in the next couple of weeks. 20. These 14 House seats are still undecided, with 2024 results outstanding a week after Election Day These 14 House seats are still undecided, with 2024 results outstanding a week after Election Day Washington — It’s one week after Election Day 2024, and while control of the White House and the Senate have been decided, in a handful of races for the U.S. House of Representatives, the results are still outstanding, and their outcomes will determine Republicans’ margins in the lower chamber. With President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race and Republicans poised to control at least 52 seats in the Senate, the GOP is heading toward full control of Washington. CBS News characterizes control of the House as lean ***********, with the party now just three seats shy of the 218 needed to win the majority. Most of the undecided House races are in California, where state law requires mail ballots to be postmarked by Election Day and received by county elections offices up to seven days after the election, so many are still being counted. As votes continue to be tallied in seven states where the winners of congressional races have not yet been projected, Congress has returned to Washington for the first time in weeks, and Republicans are moving forward with leadership elections. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise are expected to maintain their positions atop the *********** conference, but Trump’s selection of conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik for U.S. ambassador to the ******* Nations has created an open seat in GOP leadership. Here are the outstanding House races as of Tuesday, Nov. 12: Alaska at-large *********** Nick Begich leads incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, by more than 10,000 votes, with 71% of the estimated vote total reported. If Begich defeats Peltola, it would be a GOP pick-up in the House. Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, so voters select multiple candidates and rank them in order of preference. Unless a candidate earns more than 50% of the first-choice vote, the one with the fewest first-choice votes will be eliminated, and voters’ second picks are reallocated to the remaining candidates. In the third round, the candidate who receives the next fewest votes is eliminated and their votes reallocated to the remaining contenders. The process continues until a candidate reaches 50%. Arizona’s 6th Congressional District Incumbent Rep. Juan Ciscomani, a ***********, is leading Democratic opponent Kirsten Engel by 4,900 votes, with 86% of votes in. CBS News estimates the race is a toss-up. California’s 9th Congressional District CBS News characterizes the race as lean Democrat, with incumbent Rep. Josh *******, a Democrat, ahead of his *********** opponent Kevin Lincoln by more than 7,000 votes, with 71% of the estimated vote total reported so far. California’s 13th Congressional District Freshman GOP Rep. John Duarte leads Democratic challenger Adam Gray by nearly 3,000 votes, with 57% of votes in. The two faced off in 2022, when Gray lost by less than 600 votes. California’s 21st Congressional District CBS News characterizes the race between Rep. Jim Costa, the Democrat incumbent, and *********** Michael Maher as lean Costa. The congressman leads by just over 1,300 votes, and 64% of the estimated vote total has been reported so far. California’s 22nd Congressional District *********** Rep. David Valadao is leading Democrat challenger Rudy Salas by 9,500 votes, with 71% of the vote in. Valadao is one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, ******* on the U.S. Capitol. Of those 10 lawmakers, only Valadao and Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington are still in Congress. Newhouse is projected to win reelection. California’s 41st Congressional District CBS News characterizes the race as lean *********** incumbent Rep. Ken Calvert, who has served in the House for more than 30 years. Calvert leads his Democratic opponent, Will Rollins, by more than 7,500 votes, with 81% of the estimated vote total reported so far. California’s 45th Congressional District In this race between GOP incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel and Democrat Derek Tran, Steel is ahead by 3,900 votes with 84% of the vote in. CBS News characterizes the race as a toss-up. Steel is in her second term in the House and is one of the first Korean-********* women to serve in Congress. California’s 47th Congressional District Democratic Rep. Katie Porter currently holds this seat, but her unsuccessful bid for the Senate set up a race between Democrat David Min and *********** Scott Baugh to succeed her. CBS News characterizes the race as lean Min, meaning it’s likely to stay in Democrats’ hands. With 84% of the estimated vote total reported, Min is ahead by more than 3,200 votes. California’s 49th Congressional District CBS News characterizes the contest between Democratic Rep. Mike Levin and *********** Matt Gunderson as lean Levin. The Democratic incumbent is ahead of his GOP challenger by 14,000 votes, with 84% of the vote in. Iowa’s 1st Congressional District The race between *********** Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat Christina Bohannan is a rematch of the 2022 contest. The 2024 election is shaping up to be close, with Miller-Meeks currently leading by 796 votes in this race that CBS News characterizes as a toss-up. Maine’s 2nd Congressional District Democratic Rep. Jared Golden is facing *********** Austin Theriault in a district that supported Trump in 2016 and 2020. The Democratic incumbent is ahead by more than 2,100 votes, with 99% of votes in, and CBS News characterizes the race as leaning Golden. Maine, like Alaska, uses ranked-choice voting, and because neither candidate secured at least 50% of the vote, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced it will be decided by a ranked-choice runoff. The second round of tabulation is starting this week in Augusta, the state capital, she said. Ohio’s 9th Congressional District Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur is working to keep control of her seat in the race against *********** challenger Derek Merrin. CBS News characterizes the race as a toss-up. Kaptur is leading Merrin by more than 1,100 votes, with 94% of the estimated vote total reported. Oregon’s 5th Congressional District *********** incumbent Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who is in her first term, is facing off against Democrat Janelle Bynum, who is currently ahead by more than 10,000 votes. CBS News characterizes the race as leaning Bynum, and 88% of the estimated vote total has been reported. Caitlin Yilek contributed to this report. 24. Scientists Achieve Time-Reversal Symmetry With Kagome Superconductor Scientists Achieve Time-Reversal Symmetry With Kagome Superconductor A team at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland has achieved a breakthrough with a Kagome superconductor (RbV3Sb5) that demonstrates time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking at a temperature of 175 Kelvin (-98°C or -144.67 °F). This record temperature suggests promising developments in quantum systems, which typically require ultra-low temperatures to prevent disruptions caused by thermal energy. Researchers believe the high-temperature TRS breaking in RbV3Sb5 can reduce energy needs for quantum technology, potentially accelerating its adoption. Understanding Time-Reversal Symmetry in Quantum Technology TRS implies that the fundamental laws remain the same when time flows backward in Physics. However, in materials like RbV3Sb5, TRS is broken, leading to unique quantum states that are challenging yet essential for developing advanced quantum devices. These unusual states result in the material behaving differently depending on the direction of time, an attribute that can be manipulated for enhanced control over quantum systems. According to the study authors, this Kagome superconductor maintains superconductivity down to approximately two Kelvin but can sustain TRS-breaking quantum states at much higher temperatures, enhancing its suitability for real-world applications. PSI researchers, including Mahir Dzambegovic, highlighted the material’s charge order state, where electrons form an organised pattern, producing a magnetic effect that breaks TRS at -144.67 °F. Implications for Future Quantum Systems The discovery of TRS breaking at such temperatures presents significant implications for quantum computing and storage. The ability to maintain these effects at higher temperatures could make quantum technologies more feasible outside of laboratory settings, according to PSI’s team. Notably, the TRS-breaking properties of RbV3Sb5 are tunable, with effects varying based on the material’s depth, from surface to core. Future studies are expected to further explore the tunability of Kagome superconductors, particularly focusing on the interplay between superconductivity and TRS-breaking effects in RbV3Sb5. The study, published in Nature Communications, marks a step toward achieving practical quantum devices capable of operating in more energy-efficient conditions. Below is a look at the top trends we’re seeing in IDC’s study and the impact of those trends on organizations working with AI today. #1 Enhanced productivity has become table stakes. Employee productivity is the No. 1 business outcome that companies are trying to achieve with AI. The study shows that 92% of AI users surveyed are using AI for productivity, and 43% say productivity use cases have provided the greatest ROI. While productivity is a top goal, generative AI use cases that are close behind include customer engagement, topline growth, cost management and product or service innovation — and nearly half of the companies surveyed expect AI to have a high degree of impact across all those areas over the next 24 months. Customer snapshot: At the global marketing and advertising agency dentsu, employees are already saving 15 to 30 minutes a day using Copilot for tasks such as summarizing chats, generating presentations and building executive summaries. “Copilot has transformed the way we deliver creative concepts to our clients, enabling real-time collaboration. Agility, security and uniqueness are crucial, but our goal is to lead this transformation company-wide, from top to bottom.” — Takuya Kodama, Business Strategy Manager at dentsu #2 Companies are gravitating to more advanced AI solutions. In the next 24 months, more companies expect to build custom AI solutions tailored directly to industry needs and business processes, including custom copilots and AI agents. This shows a growing maturity in AI fluency as companies realize the value of out-of-the-box use cases and expand to more advanced scenarios. Customer snapshot: Siemens has developed the Siemens Industrial Copilot, which has eased the challenges caused by increasing complexity and labor shortages for dozens of customers in different industries. “In full appreciation of GenAI’s transformational potential, it’s important to remember that production does not have an ‘undo’ button.
