  2. Blizzard Is Giving Out Free Diablo 4 Boosts (And Automatically Unlocking Those Annoying Lilith Altars) Blizzard Is Giving Out Free Diablo 4 Boosts (And Automatically Unlocking Those Annoying Lilith Altars) Diablo 4 is getting a “Welcome Back” booster for all players in the near future, one that will automatically level a chosen character to 50, let players choose between three different builds per class, and equip them with a new set of gear. It will also automatically unlock all of the Altars of Lilith for those who hadn’t yet scoured the game’s world to collect them all. Blizzard announced the news as part of its most recent Diablo 4 Campfire Chat, where it covered balance changes coming as part of the mid-Season 6 update and answered fan questions. The boost will only be for characters on the game’s Eternal (non-seasonal) realms, and is being done in part because of how the game’s Season 4 Loot Reborn update and its more recent Vessel of Hatred update dramatically rebuilt the game in terms of loot, difficulty, leveling, and progression. Those updates in the process broke gear and builds for those who hadn’t played in a while. Those who own the base game will receive one free character boost, while those who own the Vessel of Hatred expansion will receive two. “A lot of players with Season 6 jumping back in, a lot of the gear went to ‘Legacy’ gear and this kind of gives them a way of being able to recover some of that and immediately get back into it,” Diablo community manager Adam Fletcher said during the livestream. Leveling to 50 and getting a new set of gear doesn’t take too long in the current form of Diablo 4, but for those who have been putting off collecting all the Altars of Lilith since launch, the boost is a big win. When Diablo 4 first released, players spent hours finding each one (160 total) to gain all the Renown and, more importantly, small stat boosts each altar granted. Blizzard shortly after launch made finding Altars of Lilith account-wide, so players only ever needed to find them all once. There will additionally be a free trial coming in the near future, one that will include the ability to take the expansion’s new Spiritborn class for a spin. Blizzard said more details about the boost and free trial will be coming in an official blog later in the week. Speaking of the Spiritborn, Blizzard confirmed during the livestream that the class is more than a little overpowered and overplayed at the moment (over 60% of players are playing the new class), but that it won’t be nerfing it until Season 7 in January. In the meantime, Blizzard is buffing the game’s original five classes in various ways to make up the difference. In GameSpot’s Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred review, we called the first expansion for Blizzard’******-ARPG “a great entry point for lapsed Diablo 4 players” that delivers on making the entire experience “feel fresh again.” Source link #Blizzard #Giving #Free #Diablo #Boosts #Automatically #Unlocking #Annoying #Lilith #Altars Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Zero-day exploits increasingly sought out by attackers Zero-day exploits increasingly sought out by attackers Threat actors – both state-backed and financially-motivated – are increasingly taking advantage of previously unknown vulnerabilities, or zero-days, to compromise their victims before fixes or patches are made available by the tech industry, according to a new advisory published by the Five Eyes cyber agencies, including the ***’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the ******* States’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The agencies have collectively drawn up a list of the 15 most exploited vulnerabilities of 2023 and found that the majority of exploited vulnerabilities were zero-days compared to less than half in 2022. The trend has continued through 2024, said the NCSC. The NCSC said that defenders needed to up their game when it comes to vulnerability management, paying particular attention to applying updates as quickly as possible when they do arrive, and to making sure they have identified all the potentially affected IT assets in their estates. The organisation also urged suppliers and developers to do more to implement secure-by-design principles into their products, something that the Five Eyes governments – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the *** and the ******* States – have become particularly vocal about in the past 18 months. Doing so helps reduce the risk of vulnerabilities being accidentally introduced during development, only to be taken advantage off further down the line. “More routine initial exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities represents the new normal which should concern end-user organisations and vendors alike as malicious actors seek to infiltrate networks,” said NCSC chief technology officer (CTO) Ollie Whitehouse. “To reduce the risk of compromise, it is vital all organisations stay on the front foot by applying patches promptly and insisting upon secure-by-design products in the technology marketplace,” said Whitehouse. “We urge network defenders to be vigilant with vulnerability management, have situational awareness in operations and call on product developers to make security a core component of product design and life-cycle to help stamp out this insidious game of whack-a-mole at source,” he added. The full list of the vulnerabilities most frequently exploited during 2023 is as follows: CVE-2023-3519, a code injection flaw in Citrix NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway; CVE-2023-4966, a buffer overflow vulnerability in Citrix NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway, aka Citrix Bleed; CVE-2023-20198, an elevation of privilege (EoP) issue in Cisco IOS XE Web UI; CVE-2023-20273, a web UI command injection bug in Cisco IOS XE; CVE-2023-27997, a heap-based buffer overflow flaw in Fortinet FortiOS and FortiProxy SSL-VPN; CVE-2023-34362, a SQL injection vulnerability in Progress MOVEit Transfer, infamously exploited by the Cl0p ransomware gang, the fall-out from which is still being felt; CVE-2023-22515, a broken access control vuln it Atlassian Confluence Data Center and Server; CVE-2021-44228, a remote code ********** (RCE) issue in Apache Log4j2, aka Log4Shell, the source of a major incident at the end of 2021 and still being widely-abused years later; CVE-2023-2868, an improper input validation flaw in Barracuda Networks ESG Appliance; CVE-2022-47966, an RCE issue in Zoho ManageEngine; CVE-2023-27350, an improper access control vulnerability in PaperCut MF/NG; CVE-2020-1472, an EoP vuln in Microsoft Netlogon, the source of another high-profile historic incident that there is now no excuse for not having addressed; CVE-2023-427983, an authentication bypass flaw in JetBrains TeamCity; CVE-2023-23397, an EoP issue in Microsoft Office Outlook, widely-used by Russian spooks; And last but not least, CVE-2023-49103, an information disclosure vuln in ownCloud graphapi. The full list, which can be downloaded from CISA, also contains details of a number of other issues that were observed being routinely exploited during 2023, prominent among them two vulnerabilities in Ivanti products disclosed in August 2023, and the infamous Fortra GoAnywhere flaw exploited, yet again, by the Cl0p gang. 4. Hearing of Executive Vice-President-designate Teresa Ribera Rodríguez | News Hearing of Executive Vice-President-designate Teresa Ribera Rodríguez | News In her opening remarks, Ms. Ribera paid tribute to the victims of the recent floods in Valencia, Spain. She committed to maintain the course of the ********* Green Deal to meet climate targets and set-up a new approach to competition policy that is supportive of ********* companies to achieve a global level playing field. Combatting climate change With reference to the recent floods in Valencia, several MEPs asked how Ms Ribera would improve Europe’s ability to prepare for growing climate-related risks. Ms Ribera highlighted the need to do more and better when it comes to improving the EU’s resilience to extreme weather events including on early warning systems and the capacity to respond. She promised a new ********* Climate Adaptation Plan to address those issues. She also committed to making water resilience a priority. Ms Ribera also committed to work towards implementing EU climate and energy targets for 2030 as well as set an EU 2040 target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels to enable the EU to become carbon neutral by mid-century. MEPs also questioned Ms Ribera on issues related to the environment and the clean circular economy including on global negotiations on climate and biodiversity. A clean and just transition Ms. Ribera said support was needed for industrial decarbonisation, promoting a just transition, including housing and quality jobs, and capitalising on the benefits of the green and digital transitions. Members questioned Ms. Ribera about the role of nuclear energy in ********* policies. She said energy mix decisions are the responsibility of member states. When asked about Europe’s automotive industry and the sector’s decarbonisation goals, Ms. Ribera expressed her willingness to work with various industry stakeholders to “ensure that the transition is achieved.” She also committed to addressing the issue of support for automotive industry subcontractors. A new approach to competition policy Ms. Ribera committed to working on a reform of EU competition policy to improve the speediness of enforcement, simplify state aid rules, and clamp down on acquisitions, which prevent innovation. MEPs asked how competition policy could be deployed to address the rising cost of living and the housing crises, and how competition rules would allow for the development of ********* global champions. Ms Ribera agreed that there was a space for competition policy to do more to address abusive pricing and to some extent the housing crisis. They also asked how Ms Ribera would ensure predictability during the competition rules reforms, improve enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and what the main priorities for the competition agenda would be. She said that the Commission needs to be empowered further to better enforce the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Among other priorities, Ms Ribera mentioned simplifying competition rules, focusing on the worst offenders and supporting the green transition. You can watch the video recording of the full hearing here. Press point At the end of the hearing, Antonio Decaro (S&D, Italy), Chair of ENVI and Aurore Lalucq (S&D, France), Chair of ECON held a press point outside the meeting room: watch it here. Locked In This year’s Esports World Cup saw everything represented, from League of Legends to Counter-Strike 2, and from Rainbow Six Siege to Rocket League. 7. Trump’s tariff threats send lobbyists scrambling to find loopholes Trump’s tariff threats send lobbyists scrambling to find loopholes In the days since President-elect Donald Trump won the presidential race, Nicole Bivens Collinson’s phone has barely stopped ringing. Collinson, who helps lead the international trade and government relations division at the lobbying firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, said she is fielding “dozens and dozens and dozens” of calls from anxious U.S. companies looking to protect themselves from Trump’s hardline tariff plans by finding loopholes and exemptions. “Absolutely everyone is calling,” Collinson told CNBC. “It is nonstop.” Over the course of the 2024 campaign, Trump made universal tariffs a core tenet of his economic platform, floating a 20% tax on all imports from all countries with a specifically harsh 60% rate for ******** goods. That hyper-protectionist trade approach sent chills up the spines of economists, Wall Street analysts and industry leaders who warned that across-the-board tariffs could make production — and in turn, consumer prices — more expensive, just as they were recovering from pandemic-era inflation spikes. “The threat of tariffs has alarmed retailers and a wide range of other U.S. businesses,” David French, senior vice president of government relations at the National Retail Federation, told CNBC. “Our members have been working on contingency plans since President Trump secured the nomination.” Ron Sorini, a principal at the lobbying firm Sorini, Samet & Associates, echoed that sentiment, noting that he takes at least two to three calls a day to field companies’ concerns about the proposed tariff ramp-up, especially in China. “[Companies] question where they should go, and how do they get the components out [of China]? How do they get the whole supply chain out?” Sorini said. When Trump unleashed his first set of China tariffs in 2018, securing an exemption became a golden ticket in corporate America, a way to safeguard a company’s China-based supply chains rather than paying the hefty price of relocation. And to obtain that golden ticket, it paid to know the right people. A 2021 research study found that applications for Trump’s first-term tariff exemptions were more likely to be approved when they came from lobbying firms whose employees had made political contributions to the *********** Party. Now, with Trump set to retake the White House in a matter of weeks, tariff escalation is becoming a more likely reality. And in corporate America, the race is on to find the right lobbyists to help companies rub shoulders with the right people, to give them an advantage in securing tariff loopholes. “Firms are prepared,” SUNY Buffalo finance professor Veljko Fotak, one of the authors of the 2021 study, told CNBC. “The real winners of this process are going to be the lawyers and lobbyists.” What tariffs will look like in the next Trump administration, and whether exemptions will be available at all, are both unknown. “Until that clarity comes, businesses will have to plan for a variety of scenarios,” Tiffany Smith, vice president of global trade policy at the National Foreign Trade Council, told CNBC. Read more CNBC politics coverage In response to CNBC’s request for comment about the Trump team’s plan for exemptions and companies’ concerns of the tariff proposals, Trump transition team spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt doubled down on the president-elect’s campaign promises. “The ********* people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. He will deliver,” Leavitt told CNBC in a statement. In the meantime, companies have been trying to set up defenses against Trump’s more aggressive trade approach. These include stockpiling goods in the short run, readying price hikes so they can pass the cost of import duties on to customers, and trying to move their production out of China. On Thursday, Steve Madden pledged to reduce its ******** imports by 45% over the next year in anticipation of Trump’s tariff plans. But exiting China is a significant undertaking for many U.S. companies, especially small businesses that may not have the buying clout or leverage to move production so easily. “What I would urge is that folks look at the impact on small businesses. Those are the people that are really getting hurt. There’s got to be some way to help companies like that,” Sorini of Sorini, Samet & Associates told CNBC. “Because they really can’t do it on their own.” Source link #Trumps #tariff #threats #send #lobbyists #scrambling #find #loopholes Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Steam Drops The Curtain on Windows 7 & 8, Marking the End of Gaming on Older Operating Systems Steam Drops The Curtain on Windows 7 & 8, Marking the End of Gaming on Older Operating Systems The latest Steam Client update was rolled out recently and as expected, this version of Steam client will not run on Windows 7 or Windows 8. The update fixed many technical issues and also added a new built-in system called Steam Game Recording. With gaming technology constantly transforming, Valve had to stop supporting old Windows operating systems, putting an end to gaming on these OS. The latest Steam client update will not support Windows 7 and 8 (Image via Valve) Even Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 and 8. Users still running these operating systems are exposed to new malware and other exploits that will cause games to perform poorly or ******. Upgrading to the latest Windows operating system certainly has a lot of benefits and will even make gaming much smoother. Steam No Longer Supports Windows 7 and 8 It’s safe to say that gaming on Windows 7 and 8 is no longer possible (Image via Valve) It has been confirmed on Steam’s official website that systems running Windows 7 and 8 will not receive the latest Steam client update. In case you’re unaware, Steam announced last year that it would stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems, this means that all the users who are still on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates. Steam revealed in late 2023 that this move is necessary as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. Even Microsoft stopped providing security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. It’s safe to say that gaming on these operating systems has officially come to an end as Microsoft is focused on giving users a fresher and better experience. Not only Windows, but this version of the Steam client will also not support macOS 10.13 or 10.14. The Latest Steam Client Update Added Steam Game Recording Steam Game Recording changes the way gamers capture footage (Image via Valve) Apart from acknowledging technical issues, Valve also added Steam Game Record, a new built-in system for creating and sharing gameplay footage. The system includes features like Background Recording mode, a mode that continuously saves gameplay to your preferred drive, never exceeding the set duration and storage limits. Roughly 2 months ago, Steam also added the new Steam Families feature, which now allows users to share games with their families, manage parental controls for their kids, and approve requests from their kids to buy Steam games. The new Families feature also allows multiple people to play games from a shared library at one time. Valve has strongly encouraged all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update sooner rather than later as using the latest operating systems will improve your computer’s security, performance, and compatibility, making your gaming experience much better. 10. This Raspberry Pi dashcam continuously records even when your car is off This Raspberry Pi dashcam continuously records even when your car is off When it comes to security, you can’t go wrong with covering all of your bases. That’s why we appreciate this project put together by maker and developer Fishwithadeagle, who’s created an impressive Raspberry Pi dashcam system. Not only does it help record while you drive, but it also keeps recording when you stop and the vehicle isn’t powered on. This means you’re covered with a watchful eye even if you aren’t around. Fishwithadeagle built the whole system from scratch with a few features that make it really stand out against commercial dashcams you can buy on the market, at a much lower price. In addition to continuously recording, it has an impressively high battery life of 38 hours, infrared support, and the ability recharge the batteries quickly. Dashcam systems that offer features like this can cost upward of $700 and even $900 USD. However, Fishwithadeagle managed to put this together for just $550. It records using multiple cameras, providing four separate streams — two of which offer 1080p quality at 30 FPS while the other two have a resolution of 2592×1944 at 12 FPS. All the cameras are hosted through a singular Pi, meaning you have one point of contact for monitoring them. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Fishwithadeagle) (Image credit: Fishwithadeagle) (Image credit: Fishwithadeagle) The main board powering the system is an 8GB Raspberry Pi 5. It’s powered by two rechargeable LiFePo4 batteries with a 190 Whr rating. A 256GB microSD card takes care of storage, which is necessary for capturing so much video. Fishwithadeagle confirmed that two Logitech c930e webcams are used alongside a couple of J5 Create 360 webcams. Those four cameras constitute the majority of the price. The hardware was mounted using various 3D components that Fishwithadeagle designed and printed for this project. Unfortunately, Fishwithadeagle has yet to provide the source code used in the project, so we aren’t exactly sure how everything communicates. However, he did offer to share the code with anyone interested in how the project works, confirming that there are five scripts that are used. Be sure to follow him for future updates as well as a tutorial breaking down further how the project was assembled. If you want to get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project, you can check out the project thread shared to Reddit. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 11. Likely narrow GOP House majority may jeopardize Trump’s tax cuts, Raymond James says Likely narrow GOP House majority may jeopardize Trump’s tax cuts, Raymond James says Republicans are nearing a sweep in Congress, but Raymond James says that it won’t be easy for President-elect Donald Trump to sign off on the legislation he wants — including the tax cuts that were part of his platform. As of Tuesday afternoon, Republicans secured 215 seats in the House of Representatives compared with the Democrats’ 206, according to NBC News. The *********** Party will have control of the Senate , with 52 seats versus the Democrats’ 47, but the GOP’s margin in the House is looking notably narrow this time, according to Raymond James’ Washington policy analyst, Ed Mills. “In 2025, Trump’s influence on Congressional Republicans will be stronger but his margin in the House will be in the single digits (down from 47 in 2017). … The narrow House majority will complicate the passage of any tax bill in 2025,” he said. Mills said the GOP is expected to use the budget reconciliation process to pass any of President-elect Trump’s tax proposals. However, even when the party held its wide House majority in 2017, he noted that 13 Republicans voted against then-President Trump’s proposed tax cuts due to disagreements over a $10,000 limit on the state and local tax, or SALT, deduction. That measure, known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act , ultimately passed and went into effect in 2018. However, a slate of provisions are expected to sunset at the end of 2025 , setting the table for talks in Washington on how to extend the tax breaks . One point of discussion as to how to fund tax cuts this time around has been to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, which is another likely point of contention, Mills added. “The narrow margins will make this more difficult, especially given the number of Congressional Republicans with IRA-funded projects in their districts,” the analyst said. In order to keep GOP lawmakers from defecting on the tax bill, legislators may seek compromises on the SALT deduction, tariffs or changes to Medicaid, according to Mills. Wolfe Research analyst Tobin Marcus also thinks passing a tax bill is a “complex challenge” with such narrow majorities across the House and the Senate. “The Congressional negotiations over this package will be complex, so there will absolutely be wrinkles we don’t expect here. But we think the hefty price tag for extending expiring individual tax provisions past EOY25 will sharply limit how much incremental tax cutting Republicans can do, and will compel them to include some real offsets despite reluctance from some parts of their coalition,” Marcus wrote in a research note Tuesday. 13. Google Learn About is the patient teacher with a bag full of tricks we all wanted as kids Google Learn About is the patient teacher with a bag full of tricks we all wanted as kids AI chatbots can be useful tools for learning about the world, but they aren’t usually designed as educators and often are full of caveats regarding where their data comes from. Google has debuted a new AI tutor called Learn About to solve those issues. It’s a personal tutor capable of adapting its teaching style in real time. Learn About isn’t just a conversational AI chatbot; it combines visual aids and the ability to expand and simplify subjects as needed, like an interactive and intelligent textbook. Learn About doesn’t rely on the Gemini AI models employed by Google in most of its AI services. Instead, it uses the LearnLM model introduced at Google I/O this year. LearnLM has been trained specifically on educational and research-oriented data and is supposed to encourage users to think for themselves. That means the AI doesn’t just give a quick answer but tries to impart the facts and the knowledge behind the straightforward answer, including diagrams and annotated text, along with suggested topics related to your initial query. LearnLM also makes sure the common hallucinations and wrong information regurgitated by AI chatbots are less of an issue. You can ask a question, suggest a topic, or even upload images and let the AI run with whatever it can find about what’s in the images. Learn About is currently available to a limited number of U.S. users, but expansion is likely coming soon. Robotic education (Image credit: Future) As an experiment, I asked about building a humanoid ******. Learn About didn’t just cite an encyclopedia on what that would entail. Instead, I got a whole list of necessary elements broken down with images, context boxes, and further reading. The ‘get images’ button at the bottom did exactly what it said it would, while the double-check with Google just seemed to confirm the information was accurate. The ‘go deeper’ button quickly led me down a path of technical details for machining an arm ******. Two paragraphs in, I was lost. I had much more fun with the ‘simplify’ button because each time I tapped it, the AI would get more creative in being simple. First, it talked about building a ****** like a toy, then it tried to explain how to build a ****** like a gingerbread man, then a puppet show, and then a magic Lego man. After that, the AI apparently decided I didn’t understand analogies and used very small words to explain robots without any window dressing. Still, the analogies and accompanying images and diagrams were like a window into textbooks for ever-younger children. People don’t always want a personal tutor. Sometimes, the trivia expert version of AI is preferable. But Gemini and LearnLM point out that Google wants people to continue thinking of it as the source of all knowledge, whether that’s a simple yes or no answer about where a famous landmark is located or a full lecture on its history and place in local culture. Learn About helps Google set itself up as an information resource and a digital learning companion. And I have to give credit to Learn About for inspiring my upcoming gingerbread puppet show about robots. 14. What a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Could Look Like Under Trump’s Presidency What a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Could Look Like Under Trump’s Presidency With Donald Trump’s recent election as President of the ******* States, his campaign promise of creating a strategic reserve is seeing renewed interest. While the idea has not yet been implemented, many are now wondering how a US Bitcoin reserve could look if it became a reality. A Strategic Bitcoin Reserve can be understood as a government-held asset aimed at stabilizing the economy during periods of financial disruption. An analogy for this would be the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), created in the 1970s to ensure oil availability during crises. Like the SPR, a Bitcoin reserve would act as a financial backstop, supporting economic stability in times of inflation or market turbulence. By holding a substantial amount of Bitcoin, the government would secure a hedge against such risks, enhancing its array of economic safeguards. Proponents believe Bitcoin’s limited supply and decentralized nature make it a strong potential hedge against inflation and market instability, much like gold. While the US economy depends on oil as a fundamental resource, Bitcoin does not play such an essential role. Critics liken holding a Bitcoin reserve to stockpiling consumer goods rather than vital commodities. Yet, Bitcoin’s global appeal and rising value are fueling the argument that it could become a critical economic asset. Renewed enthusiasm for a US Bitcoin reserve has been further fueled by Bitcoin’s recent price surge, which nearly reached $90,000 on Monday night. This momentum aligns with Trump’s presidential win, creating a favorable climate for discussions around how Bitcoin might enhance the country’s economic strategy. One of the initiative’s strongest advocates is Senator Cynthia Lummis, a *********** from Wyoming known for her commitment to advancing crypto-friendly legislation. In July, Lummis introduced the “Bitcoin Act,” a bill that proposes a decentralized network of secure Bitcoin vaults managed by the US Department of Treasury. The act outlines an ambitious plan for the government to acquire up to 200,000 BTC annually over five years, potentially accumulating a total of 1 million BTC, or around 5% of Bitcoin’s total supply. Following Trump’s victory in the primary election on Tuesday, November 5, Lummis voiced her support enthusiastically on social media, posting on X: “WE ARE GOING TO BUILD A STRATEGIC BITCOIN RESERVE.” Her Bitcoin Act proposal would be funded by reallocating Federal Reserve assets, including bonds, loans, and gold, currently valued around $7 trillion, without adding to national debt. Currently, the US government holds about $18 billion worth of Bitcoin seized through ********* cases, according to Arkham Intelligence data. This existing stockpile could potentially be incorporated into a broader Bitcoin reserve. Supporters argue that establishing a Bitcoin reserve would signal the US government’s confidence in Bitcoin’s viability, potentially encouraging other countries to follow suit. 15. Starmer announces *** target for 81% carbon emissions cut by 2035 Starmer announces *** target for 81% carbon emissions cut by 2035 Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced fresh climate change targets at a global summit, saying he wants the *** to lead on cutting emissions. The *** will now aim for an 81% cut in its emissions by 2035, he told the UN conference of parties (COP29) in Azerbaijan. The target updates a 78% pledge by 2035 under the previous ************* government, although that also included international aviation and shipping emissions, and goes beyond another pledge of a 68% reduction by 2030. Sir Keir insisted the government would not “tell people how to live their lives” but the target was vital to the ***’s future prosperity and energy security. The prime minister said the new target was based on recommendations from the ***’s independent climate change committee (CCC) aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5C compared to levels in 1990. He was one of only seven G20 leaders attending the summit, with 13 absentees including the premiers of the US, China, France and Germany. Sir Keir would not be drawn on his views about president-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to cut climate rules during his election campaign. He said: “Make no mistake, the race is on for the clean energy jobs of the future, the economy of tomorrow, and I don’t want to be in the middle of the pack – I want to get ahead of the game”. The target will be included in papers to go before Parliament before February and, although Sir Keir did not announce any new policies, he did commit to continuing to provide £11.6bn of climate finance until March 2026, a pledge made under the previous government. Announcing a £1bn investment in a wind turbine project in Hull, which he said would create 1,300 local jobs, Sir Keir said the world was standing at a “critical juncture in the climate crisis”. The *** has called for other countries to match the new target, following stark warnings from the ******* Nations that the world is on course for a 3.1C rise without further cuts. The latest target is broadly in line with the ***’s legally-binding carbon-cutting path towards net zero emissions by 2050, contained in the 2015 Paris Agreement. That international agreement ties the *** to ratcheting up new “nationally determined contributions” (NDCs) for carbon reduction every five years, which has seen the a 68% cut by 2030 increase to an 81% cut by 2035. The Climate Change Act 2008 also set legally-binding domestic agreements on carbon budgets in five year chunks until 2050, which unlike the NDC targets also include international aviation and shipping emissions. The latest of these is the sixth carbon budget, which runs between 2033-2037, and has already been set at 78%. Since taking power in July, Labour has ended an effective ban on new onshore wind projects and pledged not to issue any new oil and gas exploration licenses in the North Sea, as well as closing the ***’s last coal power plant in September. The switch towards greener energy has already halved the ***’s annual greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 – but the CCC has previously said further reductions will be difficult without lifestyle changes. The government advisers said taxes on meat and dairy might be needed if people do not voluntarily reduce their consumption of the products, and there should be moves to phase out the use of petrol cars. Speaking at the summit, Sir Keir said the new *** target would be “difficult” but “achievable”, and he wanted government to “tread lightly on people’s lives”. “It’s not about telling people how to live their lives – I’m not interested in that,” he added. “I am interested in making sure their energy bills are stable, that we’ve got energy independence, and that we also along the way pick up the next generation of jobs.” However, shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho claimed the new target would lead to “hardship” for the British people. During energy questions in the Commons, Coutinho said making “already stringent carbon emission targets even higher” would require a “shift away from meat and dairy” and “less travel”. The ************* MP claimed the approach would “see our reliance on ******** imports – a country which is 60% powered by coal – go through the roof”. In response, energy minister Kerry McCarthy said: “It’s really important that we are stepping up and showing global ambition. “Reaching net zero in this country and getting to clean power by 2030 is a massive opportunity – it is not a cost.” The interim chair of the CCC, Professor Piers Forster, welcomed the new target and said it was feasible based on the latest science, technological developments, and the ***’s national circumstances. “Our analysis shows that this is a feasible target that will support jobs and investment,” he said, adding the *** was currently running behind schedule on delivering its 2030 target of 68% cuts. He added: “A target is only as meaningful as the delivery against it. “The *** needs to get back on track to deliver against our existing 2030 NDC commitment. “We need to see further urgent action to speed up deployment of low-carbon solutions such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, and tree planting.” All countries who have signed up to the Paris Agreement should submit their latest carbon reduction targets by a deadline of February next year and a copy of that memo, known as the Information to facilitate Clarity, Transparency and Understanding (ICTU), will be presented to MPs before then. The coffee table book of Apple Music’s Best 100 Albums will set you back $450 The coffee table book of Apple Music’s Best 100 Albums will set you back $450 Apple has a history of eye-popping price tags, but the company is reaching new heights with a product that isn’t even a gadget. After Apple Music unveiled a list of the 100 best albums of all time earlier this year, the streaming service is releasing a companion coffee table book. You can grab one of the 1,500 copies for a cool $450. I find these endeavors to rank and quantify art hilarious, because music is subjective and personal by nature. But people do love to debate their own artistic opinions, so if that’s your jam there’s plenty to dig into with Apple Music’s assessment. (And before you ask, the top spot was claimed by The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.) This particular countdown was assembled by “Apple Music’s team of experts alongside an exclusive group of artists including Maren Morris, Pharrell Williams, J Balvin, Charli XCX, Mark Hoppus, Honey Dijon and Nia Archives, as well as songwriters, producers and industry professionals,” according to the book listing. I’m sure this limited-run hardcover will be very beautiful, and maybe the liner notes analyzing each entry are deeply insightful. But I also wonder who would bother to buy it. If you are one of those 1,500 people who wants one, the book is due to start shipping in January. 17. S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl and MSFS 2024 arrive next week — here are the system requirements and driver details S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl and MSFS 2024 arrive next week — here are the system requirements and driver details Two of the most hotly anticipated games are slated to arrive next week: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Both will be under our microscope for performance, and the GPU companies are already gearing up for the releases. Nvidia has Game Ready driver 566.14 with support for both titles, and it also patches several issue, including the infamous Corsair iCUE CPU utilization bug. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, which debuted in 2007. The second game is a hybrid first-person shooter, immersive sim, and horror game all wrapped into one. The game takes advantage of Unreal Engine 5, potentially giving the game excellent visual fidelity and graphical realism — and perhaps inevitably the performance issues and bugs that Uneal Engine 5 is known for. The game heads back to the Chornobyl reactor and surrounding environment, inspired by the real-life nuclear disaster that took place at the Chornobyl plant — paired with a fictional story and timeline. The game takes place in a 64 km squared open world centered around Chornobyl full of radiation, mutants, and anomalies. The story has several different paths set by in-game decisions, enabling the player to make their own story. The system requirements look somewhat tame, though we have to wonder what level of performance they target. You’ll need at least an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X or Intel Core i7-7700K processor, 16GB of memory, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB, or Intel Arc A750 graphics card. You’ll also want 160GB (!) of SSD storage. Recommended system specs are quite a bit higher: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or Intel Core i7-11700, 32GB of memory, and either an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, or Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. And 160GB of SSD storage still. How will the game run? We’ll do our own testing as soon as we’re able, but in the interim Nvidia has provided some benchmarks, showcasing both native and DLSS 3 performance as usual: (Image credit: Nvidia) Nvidia benchmarks reveal that, just like every other Unreal Engine 5 title, the game is incredibly taxing on even the best graphics cards at maximum settings if you don’t take advantage of performance enhancers including upscaling and frame generation. At 4k maximum settings, the RTX 4090 doesn’t even hit 60 FPS, delivering just 52.4 FPS average with DLSS off. Nvidia’s mid range RTX 4070 Super barely surpasses the 30 FPS mark, with 34.7 FPS average. Turning on With DLSS performance mode upscaling and frame generation helps the RTX 4090 to reach 123 FP, and the RTX 4070 Super gets 87 FPS. Stepping down to 1440p and 1080p naturally makes things quite a bit less difficult, in terms of hardware. At native resolution with DLSS off, the RTX 4090 achieved 74.8 FPS and 85.5 FPS, respectively. With DLSS on (this time with quality mode upscaling), the RTX 4090 hits 145 and 166 FPS, and the RTX 4070 Super and other Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs all hit playable levels as well. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 doesn’t have any benchmarks yet, but it’s the company’s next iteration of its class-leading flight sim. The game comes with a big focus on player career, with multiple career options including shipping, chartering, racing, and more. The game will ship with the full brunt of Nvidia features: DLSS 3, DLAA, ray tracing, and Reflex. Minimum system requirements consist of an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K processor, 16GB RAM, a Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 970 GPU, 50GB of disk space, and at least a 10 Mbps internet connection. Recommended specs list an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X or Intel Core i7-10700K, 32GB RAM, Radeon RX 5700 XT or GeForce RTX 2080, still 50GB of storage, and a 50 Mbps or faster internet connection. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl comes out November 20th while MSFS 2024 comes out a day earlier on November 19th. Nvidia’s 566.14 drivers also mark the end of the road for GeForce Experience and the Nvidia Control Panel, at least in terms of updates and bug fixes. The Nvidia App has reached the full release milestone (version 11.0.1 technically) and now takes over from GFE and NCP. What about AMD and Intel drivers for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and Flight Simulator 2024? They’re not available yet, though we suspect there’s a good chance both will push out updates before next week. 18. Judge Blocks Louisiana Law Mandating 10 Commandments in Schools Judge Blocks Louisiana Law Mandating 10 Commandments in Schools A federal judge has temporarily blocked a Louisiana law that would have required every public school classroom to display the Ten Commandments. U.S. District Judge John W. deGravelles of Baton Rouge ruled Tuesday that the law is “unconstitutional on its face” and violates the free exercise and establishment clauses of the First Amendment. A coalition of parents supported by The ********* Civil Liberties Union, the ********* Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana, Americans ******* for Separation of ******* and State, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a lawsuit to block the requirement that was signed into law in June. As CBN News reported, the law required every Louisiana classroom from kindergarten to the university level, which receives state funding, to display the commandments “on a poster or framed document that is at least eleven inches by fourteen inches” by Jan.1. Each poster was required to be paired with the four-paragraph “context statement” describing how the Ten Commandments “were a prominent part of ********* public education for almost three centuries.” Litigation began quickly with the ********* Civil Liberties Union vowing to challenge the law as soon as it was signed. “Our public schools are not Sunday schools…and students of all faiths — or no ****** — should feel welcome in them,” reads a statement released by the group. Supporters of the law said the measure is not solely religious, but that it has historical significance to the foundation of U.S. law. They added that the commandments displays were going to be paid for by private donations so the state wasn’t going to fund them. deGravelles, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, granted a preliminary injunction while a lawsuit proceeds. This means the state is not allowed to plan to promote or create rules surrounding the law. He also ordered state Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office to “provide notice to all schools that the Act has been found unconstitutional.” At a news conference after the hearing, Murrill pushed back at the ruling saying the posters are constitutional. “This law, I believe, is constitutional, and we’ve illustrated it in numerous ways that the law is constitutional. We’ve shown that in our briefs by creating a number of posters,” Murrill said. “Again, you don’t have to like the posters. The point is you can make posters that comply with the Constitution.” Murrill is expected to appeal the ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that a Kentucky law requiring all public schools to post the Ten Commandments in each classroom was unconstitutional. In Stone v. Graham, the justices ruled 5-4 that the law violated the First Amendment’s establishment clause and was “plainly religious in nature.” ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly ********** perspective.*** Source link #Judge #Blocks #Louisiana #Law #Mandating #Commandments #Schools Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  20. 3 Nuclear Energy Stocks to Benefit From AI-Driven Demand 3 Nuclear Energy Stocks to Benefit From AI-Driven Demand AI products have an inherent power cost. Their electricity requirements ramp up from text-to-text to text-to-image generation and then even more to text-to-video content. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that, by 2026, AI data centers will need 10x more power than in 2023. Last year, Nvidia’s 100,000 AI chips amounted to 7.3 TWh of annual electricity consumption. For comparison, estimated electricity consumption to secure its network was 120 TWh during 2023, out of 130 TWh total for all cryptocurrencies. Consequently, the IEA expects nuclear power generation to reach a new high in 2025. As the most cost-efficient energy source, it is currently expanding rapidly in Asia, which should give incentives to the West to catch up. Not only is nuclear energy density off the charts compared to , coal, and oil, but nuclear fuel rods are recyclable up to 97%. As all other energy generation sources are less reliable, both Microsoft (NASDAQ:) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:) have already made deals to buy energy from nuclear reactors. With this trend clear on the horizon, here are some nuclear infrastructure stocks investors should keep in mind. BWX Technologies, Inc. Based in Lynchburg, Virginia, this company should be viewed as exceedingly safe nuclear (investing) exposure. The company is critical for US and *** navies’ nuclear application. Conversely, it is directly involved in securing the US hegemony and dominance, which is key to constant growth of the S&P 500 index. On top of that, BWX Technologies Inc (NYSE:) also plays an important commercial role in the US nuclear sector, from components to microreactors. Case in point, this June, Wyoming Energy Authority picked BWX to deploy small-scale nuclear reactors to augment the state’s energy needs. Additionally, BWXT Medical division has a diversified pipeline servicing the nuclear medicine sector, primarily by supplying diagnostic radioisotopes. All of these sectors have high human and technological capital requirements. This scarcity makes BWX role similar to the nuclear sector what TSMC is for the semiconductor industry. Year-to-date, BWXT stock has gone up 64%, presently priced at $125.38, against the 52-week average of $95 per share. Should investors take the BWXT plunge at the forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 36.90? In Q3 earnings, delivered on November 4th, the company raised its revenue guidance for FY24 from $2.6 billion to $2.7 billion. According to 8 analyst inputs aggregated by Nasdaq, the average BWXT price target is $131.14 per share, with a potential for a $166 ceiling twelve months ahead. When there is a stock market correction after the Trump enthusiasm wanes, BWXT should be on investors’ radar. NexGen Energy (TSX:) On the riskier side of the nuclear spectrum, NexGen Energy Ltd. (NYSE:) is a pre-revenue uranium exploration company. Nonetheless, 22 nations pledged at UAE’s COP28, at the end of 2023, to triple global nuclear power generation by 2050. Accounting for regional instabilities and geopolitical tensions, this is bound to create a high uranium demand. In November’s investor presentation, NexGen is heavily focused on developing the Rook I Project located in Saskatchewan, Canada. Its untapped uranium potential, graded at 29.2 Mlbs U3O8 annual production for 11.7 years, could make it one of the world’s largest uranium suppliers. For the Western hemisphere, Rook has the potential to supply half of needed uranium supply. Rook’s ********* location is an extra plus, as US investors don’t have to worry about regional stability. NexGen expects uranium prices to go up 127% by 2030, which would pave NexGen’s path to become the world’s top 10 uranium mining companies. As of the latest financial report ending September, the company holds CAD$537.7 million in cash against CAD$468.8 million in total liabilities, of which CAD$429.9 million is in convertible debentures. These are hybrid debt instruments that combine bonds and shares at a fixed interest until investors’ conversion into equities. Year-to-date, NXE stock is up 6.3%, presently priced at $7.21 against the 52-week average of $7.07 per share. The $7.1 range is the bottom forecast by 9 analyst inputs, while the average NXE price target is $8.79. The high ceiling is $10 per share. Vistra Corp. Back to the safer side of the nuclear spectrum, Vistra Energy Corp (NYSE:) is an electricity generation company. Given the fact that utility companies provide layer zero for civilization to function, and that they can always tweak prices with inflation, VST is a low-risk stock exposure. Preparing for the AI datacenter future, Vistra acquired Energy Harbor for $3.43 billion in March, which expanded its nuclear reactor fleet to rank as the 2nd largest in the US. From an investing perspective, Vistra is a solid pick to capture dividend yield growth. As of the end of October, Vistra’s dividend growth is 6.52% quarterly, at an annual payout of $0.89 per share. VST stock itself is up 263% year-to-date, presently priced at $138.39 per share. Since 2021, Vistra has been executing $4.58 billion in stock buybacks, of which $2.2 billion ******** to be authorized. In the latest Q3 financial report delivered on November 7th, Vistra raised 2025 guidance to $5.5 – $6.1 billion range. Annually, Vistra targets ~$300 million in dividend payouts. Image credit: Vistra For the next year, the company already hedged 96% of energy prices, ensuring cash flow stability. Against the 52-week average of $74.83 per share, the average VST price target is $163.11. The current price of $138.39 is closely aligned with the bottom forecast of $135 per share. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told world leaders and those who attended COP29 that the world was in the “final countdown” of its chance to limit the rise in temperatures to 1.5 C. “Time is not on our side,” he said. “Exhibit A: 2024. With the hottest day on record and the hottest month on record, this is almost certain to be the hottest year on record, and a masterclass in climate destruction.” Guterres went on to cite recent hurricanes prompting evacuation, flooding in various communities and extreme heat’s impact on workers as examples of disasters being “super-charged” by climate change.
