  3. Scalpers are salivating right now – MSI suggests RTX 5090 supply will be tight due to Nvidia’s shortage Scalpers are salivating right now – MSI suggests RTX 5090 supply will be tight due to Nvidia’s shortage MSI says there will be a limited supply of the RTX 5090 at launch This shortage reportedly stems from miscommunication with Nvidia Scalpers may have the upper hand at launch due to limited availability Nvidia’s RTX 5090 is about to launch at multiple retailers on January 30 and considering the power it packs for providing the best gaming performance across the board, many PC gamers are keen to get hold of one – but unfortunately, that might not be easy. As reported by Wccftech, MSI claims that the supply of the RTX 5090 will be limited at launch, suggesting a chip shortage on Nvidia’s part. While this is only one of Team Green’s third-party partners, it certainly doesn’t spell good news for other partners and those attempting to purchase Founders Edition GPUs. Considering the history of scalping surrounding the previous generation’s RTX 4090, I’m worried it might turn out to be much worse this time around – with an MSRP of $1,999 / £1,939 / AU$4,039 (along with the combination of a limited supply), we could be seeing a far more dire situation. It’s also worth noting that most partner cards will be more expensive than Nvidia’s Founders Edition, so this may give scalpers an opportunity to go overboard with pricing if demand is suitably high. According to IT Home (translated from ********), the projected short supply at launch stems from miscommunication between Nvidia and partners, plus the ‘Spring Festival’ (******** New Year) affecting factory opening times. Whilst it’s not the end of the world for those intent on purchasing the flagship GPU, it does indeed point towards a potential long (and expensive) wait if scalpers are quick to strike. (Image credit: Future) So, how do you beat scalpers? Let’s face it: there’s not much one can do to beat scalpers other than staring at your screen and constantly refreshing the store page to reach the checkout before everything sells out. The same can be said for those camping outside retailers for the RTX 5090 due to the limited supply as highlighted by IGN – besides this, most of it is left to luck and any measures put in place by Nvidia itself or retailers. We’ve seen this occur with the likes of Valve’s Steam Deck, which was limited to one order per account when in high demand – and whilst it didn’t completely eliminate scalping, it did a great job at softening the blow, though at the cost of customers left on edge when awaiting a new batch of units. If you’re wondering where to buy Nvidia’s RTX 5090, we’ve made a short guide on the best online retailers to keep tabs on. If scalpers manage to beat customers and units sell out quickly, I’d say it’s worth waiting patiently to avoid overpaying – especially if you’re still using an RTX 4090, as I promise you, you’re perfectly fine for the time being. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has projected a population growth of 7.3% between 2022 and 2032, compared with an increase of 6.1% over the previous 10 years. The number is largely based on the net migration – the difference between those entering and leaving the country – of an estimated 4.9 million people over the 10-year *******. The number of births and deaths is expected to be roughly equal and for there to be an additional 1.7 million pensioners by 2032. Between mid-2022 and mid-2032, the ONS projections suggest: 6.8 million people will be born6.8 million people will die9.9 million people will immigrate long-term to the UK4.9 million people will emigrate long-term from the *** Reacting to figures, shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the number immigrating long-term to the *** was “shocking and unacceptable”, and must be “stopped from materialising.” “Ten million arrivals over 10 years is far too high”, he said, adding: “We need a binding legal cap on visas issued each year which is very, very substantially lower than this in order to get the numbers down and under control.” England is expected to see the biggest population increase among the *** nations, with a project rise of 7.8% compared with 5.9% for Wales, 4.4% for Scotland and 2.1% for Northern Ireland. The natural change in population – number of births and deaths – is projected to be “around zero”. This is because deaths are projected to rise due to a large number of people born in the post-World War Two ******* reaching older ages, the ONS says. The projections also highlight an increasingly ageing population, and suggests there could be fewer children due to lower fertility rates. The ONS stressed the figures are projections – not predictions or forecasts – and warned that real numbers could be higher or lower than suggested. 5. DeepSeek sets stage for frenetic earnings from Meta, Microsoft, Tesla DeepSeek sets stage for frenetic earnings from Meta, Microsoft, Tesla Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk Manuel Orbegozo | Chip Somodevilla | Reuters The news surrounding the power and efficiency of China’s DeepSeak roiled tech markets on Monday and landed just in time to give U.S. tech investors a reason to pay particularly close attention to earnings season, which kicks off after the bell on Wednesday. DeepSeek, an artificial intelligence lab based in Hangzhou, released a reasoning model called R1 last week that outperformed OpenAI’s latest model in many third-party tests. In late December, DeepSeek launched a free, open-source large language model that it said took only two months and less than $6 million to build. The startup was founded in 2023. While there’s plenty of skepticism surrounding DeepSeek’s claims, the latest pronouncements caused a panic on Wall Street due to the potential implications of significantly cheaper AI models coming sooner rather than later. Nvidia’s stock price plummeted 17% on Monday, its steepest drop since the early days of the Covid pandemic in March 2020. The selloff wiped out almost $600 billion in market cap, the biggest one-day loss ever for a U.S. company. Shares of chipmaker Broadcom, which has also benefited from the AI *****, also dropped 17%. And Oracle, Dell, Super Micro Computer and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise all saw steep declines because they sell servers packed with Nvidia graphics processing units. Meta, Microsoft and Tesla all report quarterly results on Wednesday and are among the megacap tech companies spending billions of dollars on AI infrastructure, with the biggest checks going to pay for Nvidia’s GPUs. Apple reports results on Thursday, followed by Alphabet and Amazon next week. The big immediate issues for those companies with respect to DeepSeek are less about revenue and more about costs. It’s a topic they tend to spend a lot time talking about on earnings calls. “The sheer efficiency of DeepSeek’s pre and post training framework (if true) raises the question as to whether or not global hyperscalers and governments, that have and continue to invest significant capex dollars into AI infrastructure, may pause to consider the innovative methodologies that have come to light with DeepSeek’s research,” wrote analysts at Stifel in a report on Monday. Investors hope to get some initial answers in earnings reports this week and next. Nvidia doesn’t report until late February, and Broadcom is expected to announce results in March. Here’s how DeepSeek could come up on next week’s earnings calls. Meta Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Meta Platforms Inc., wears Orion augmented reality glasses during the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, Sept. 25, 2024. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last week that his company plans to invest around $60 billion to $65 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 as it bulks up its AI infrastructure. Zuckerberg talks extensively about AI on his company’s quarterly updates, and likes to tout advancements in its open-source Llama family of LLMs. Given how much Meta spends on Nvidia GPUs, any change in the market dynamics is of deep interest to shareholders. Some tech investors have expressed concern about the hefty amount of spending on AI relative to the immediate returns companies are seeing. Ralph Schackart, an analyst at William Blair, told CNBC that DeepSink’s recent claims about its allegedly cheaper and quicker-to-train open source AI model “caught everybody by surprise, but it’s hard to know whether that investment is real or not.” Meta’s stock price rose almost 2% on Monday, garnering a very different response from Wall Street compared to Nvidia and the other hardware companies. The potential of lower costs could be a boon for Meta. But, like Llama, DeepSeek is open source, so there’s also the possible competitive threat if developers gravitate to another model. The one thing Schackart said investors can be sure of is that Meta will continue investing in AI. “There’s too much to gain or lose by not investing,” he said. Microsoft Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., speaks during the company event on AI technologies in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Microsoft slid 2.1% on Monday, a drop that was narrower than the overall tech market’s decline. Among the large software and internet companies, Microsoft is closest to the AI ***** due to its intimate relationship with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The roughly $14 billion Microsoft has pumped into OpenAI has been critical for the startup, which needs boatloads of GPUs to build and run its models. DeepSeek is going up directly against OpenAI. In a post on X late Monday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called R1 “an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price.” He added that OpenAI will deliver better models, but that it’s “legit invigorating to have a new competitor!” In addition to funneling money to OpenAI, Microsoft is a big spender on its own when it comes to GPUs for its AI products and its Azure cloud-computing service. Analysts at Morgan Stanley said the rise of DeepSeek is a positive development for the company because of the possibility of lower capital expenditures. However, Oppenheimer analyst Timothy Horan sees DeepSeek as a negative sign for Microsoft, which “has bet more on proprietary models (OpenAI) and higher-cost hardware,” he wrote in a report. Microsoft said earlier this month that it plans to spend $80 billion in fiscal 2025 on the construction of data centers that can handle AI workloads. Tesla Elon Musk speaks during the Tesla Annual Shareholder’s meeting in Austin, Texas, on June 13, 2024. Source: Tesla Inc. On his social network, X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who also runs SpaceX, expressed doubt that DeepSeek’s models were created on the reportedly low budget of under $10 million. But Musk showed appreciation for DeepSeek’s technical achievements. Musk has a history in the space. He was a co-founder of OpenAI, when it was launched as a nonprofit in 2015, but he’s now involved in a heated legal battle with the company and Altman and is suing to stop OpenAI from transforming into a for-profit entity. Musk is also founder of AI startup and OpenAI competitor xAI, which is raising billions of dollars, largely to buy Nvidia GPUs. At Tesla, Musk has been ramping up AI spending as the company works toward building a fleet of self-driving cars. Musk has talked about his company’s sizable AI investments as a key advantage. He said in a post on X in April that Tesla would spend $10 billion for the year “in combined training and inference AI.” UBS analysts wrote in a note on Monday that, “greater efficiency to both model training and inference can help advance, and eventually proliferate,” autonomous vehicles. However, they added that affordable open-sourced models “could break the narrative that the more capital put into compute and infrastructure, the more likely the probability of success, thereby lessening any ‘moat'” Tesla has established. Tesla shares fell 2.3% on Monday. Apple Chief Executive of Apple, Tim Cook gives a thumb’s up during a tour the Apple Headquarters on December 12, 2024 in London, England. Chris Jackson | Getty Images Investors didn’t express any concern about Apple on Monday. The stock rose 3.2% for the day, outperforming all of its closest peers. Apple is less profligate than its rivals in terms of capital expenditures. In the company’s latest fiscal year, it spent $9.5 billion on capex, 14% less than in 2023. Unlike some of its tech competitors, Apple doesn’t run a cloud service that rents out computing capacity. The company’s big AI bet so far has been around Apple Intelligence, its suite of software for iPhones and Macs that can summarize text and generate images. Apple’s suite runs on its own chips, either on the user’s device or on the company’s servers. For training its models, Apple has published research saying that its initial models for Apple Intelligence used Google’s proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), a chip that’s more limited than a GPU but can handle some AI tasks. Apple contracts with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its Siri voice assistant, which is powered by pricey Nvidia GPUs. That’s a topic that could be of interest to analysts after the DeepSeek developments. However, while neither company has publicly confirmed the deal underpinning the partnership, analysts have expressed doubt that Apple is paying for the ChatGPT access. 7. Waste firm given go ahead to sue government over recycling scheme Waste firm given go ahead to sue government over recycling scheme Angus Cochrane BBC Scotland News Getty Images The Scottish government postponed its plans to introduce a deposit return scheme in 2023 A judge has ruled that a £166m legal claim against the Scottish government over the failed deposit return scheme can go ahead. Ministers effectively dropped plans for a Scotland-specific bottle return initiative in June 2023 following a dispute with the *** government. Biffa Waste Services, which had been hired to collect recycled containers, argued in the Court of Session that ministers assured it the scheme would go ahead – and lost out when it was cancelled. Ministers denied the firm’s arguments and said the case should be thrown out of court. Biffa, which is seeking up to £166.2m in reparations, says the government breached a duty of care and was negligent when it claimed the scheme was viable. Judge’s ruling In a written statement, Lord Clark said ministers had been unable to convince him that Biffa’s pleadings “do not disclose circumstances giving rise to a duty of care”. The judge also dismissed an argument from ministers that even if the court did accept they had been negligent and had a duty of care, the case should be thrown out because Biffa’s case was “irrelevant” to the legal arguments it made. He said that to win damages the waste firm would have to convince the court there was a duty of care, that it was breached and that it caused financial losses. Biffa would have to prove that the firm relied on a written assurance given by former Green minister Lorna Slater about the scheme’s viability, and that this led to financial losses. PA Media Former Green minister Lorna Slater oversaw the attempted introduction of the recycling scheme Lord Clark said “questions remain” about the costs incurred by Biffa, and the amount of future profits it lost out on. The judge said there should now be a full hearing to examine the arguments in more detail. Biffa’s financial claim includes about £115m in projected profits over a 10-year contract with Circularity Scotland, a non-profit company funded by the drinks industry which was supposed to manage the scheme. It collapsed with debts and liabilities of more than £86m when the initiative was postponed. Biffa is also seeking about £50m it said it spent in preparation for the scheme – including buying vehicles and specialist equipment, leasing vehicle depots, processing sites and taking on extra staff. What is the deposit return scheme? The deposit return scheme was a headline ambition of the former SNP-Green administration at Holyrood following the 2021 election. Under the plans, a 20p deposit was be added to all single-use drinks containers made of **** plastic, metal or glass. Consumers could reclaim the deposit by returning the containers to retailers or to specially-designed reverse vending machines. It was due to be introduced in August 2023 but the launch date was pushed back, with then first minister Humza Yousaf citing concerns from businesses. A further stumbling block came when Conservative ministers at Westminster refused to grant the scheme the go-ahead unless it conformed to a ***-wide approach excluding glass. In June 2023 Slater said she had no choice but to delay the scheme until at least October 2025, accusing the *** government of sabotage. She left government last year following the collapse of the Green-SNP power-sharing agreement. Scotland is not expected to have a deposit return scheme until October 2027 at the earliest, when the *** government aims to launch its own version of the scheme, excluding glass. Holyrood ministers are expected to align their return scheme to match Westminster’s version, though Wales has pulled out of a ***-wide approach because it wants to include glass. Following a freedom of information request, the Scottish government revealed earlier this month that it had spent £168,000 on legal fees related to the case brought by Biffa. A spokesperson said it could not comment on live litigation. Source link #Waste #firm #ahead #sue #government #recycling #scheme Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. Southern Hemisphere drills big copper runs at Llahuin, Chile Southern Hemisphere drills big copper runs at Llahuin, Chile Southern Hemisphere Mining has nailed a crop of copper runs in last year’s drilling results at its Llahuin copper-gold-molybdenum project in Chile, topped by a 105m run at 0.64pc copper equivalent. That top reverse circulation (RC) run includes 16m assaying 0.85 per cent copper equivalent from surface and 26m going 0.91 per cent copper equivalent from 78m. A second hole pierced 81m going 0.49 per cent copper equivalent from 2m to end of hole, including 48m assaying 0.58 per cent copper equivalent from 30m. A third hole probed an impressive 132m going 0.48 per cent copper equivalent from surface, including 60m running 0.67 per cent copper equivalent from surface. Two other holes bored out 122m at 0.41 per cent copper equivalent, including 48m assaying 0.52 per cent from 66m and 16m at 0.51 per cent copper equivalent from 102m, respectively. The 2024 RC drilling program completed a total of 2728m across 26 holes, ranging in depth from 53m to 168m. The results have extended the strike of the Cerro-Ferro deposit system by 300m or about 15 per cent, to a total distance of 2.2 kilometres. It appears to remain open at its northern and southern extremities. The results further add to those won from the company’s 2023 drilling campaign that included one hole that intercepted 156m at 0.51 per cent copper equivalent from surface, including 82m at 0.67 per cent copper equivalent from 46m and also 26m at 0.75 per cent copper equivalent from 48m. A second 2023 hole intercepted 136m at 0.47 per cent copper equivalent from 42m, including 32m at 0.66 per cent copper equivalent from 100m. Remaining samples are still with the laboratory and the company is waiting on the results. Several of these RC holes are now ready for diamond tails to advance the depth and grade potential. The results reinforce the large scale of the Llahuin copper-gold-moly deposits to over 2.2km for CerroFerro, and open along strike both north and south. Mineralisation is from surface, optimum for open-pit mining configuration, and results will be particularly interesting as we diamond drill deeper. Southern Hemisphere’s drilling is still relatively shallow and mineralisation often occurs at surface, which could significantly advance the open pit potential of the Llahuin project. It also supports planning for future testing to chase up the deeper underground mining potential below its multiple zones. The link zone between the Ferro and Cerro deposits requires additional drilling, which could also significantly increase the project’s tonnage potential. The company has undertaken an extensive magneto-telluric survey at the project and has completed the acquisition of field data. Magneto-telluric surveying is a passive geophysical method that uses natural time variations of the earth’s magnetic and electrical fields to measure the electrical resistivity of sub-surface deep target geophysical systems. The method has proven successful in identifying world-class copper porphyry deposits, including Atex Resources’ Chilean Valeriano deposit. Next steps are to integrate the MT survey data with existing IP, aeromagnetic, and geochemical prospectivity mapping datasets to identify new shallow “blind” targets under colluvial cover – which overlies much of the area – and also refine the deeper targets beneath the Cerro/Ferro and Curiosity prospects. Management says it is looking at producing an upgraded mineral resource estimate for Llahuin in the first half of this year and it remains confident the project will continue to deliver a growth story. 10. Pro-Musk Scott Jennings Is Dared to Repeat ‘Nazi Salute’ During On-Air Brawl Pro-Musk Scott Jennings Is Dared to Repeat ‘Nazi Salute’ During On-Air Brawl Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell had an explosive showdown with NewsNight panelist Scott Jennings over his defense of Elon Musk’s questionable salute. Rampell achieved the rare feat of stunning Jennings into silence after she threw down the gauntlet and challenged him to repeat Musk’s now infamous gesture, after the Republican talking head suggested the outrage over it was much ado about nothing. Of course, the CNN showdown comes after Donald Trump’s post inauguration ceremony rally last Monday, where Musk took to the stage before beating his chest and throwing his arm out straight. Twice. He has since defended it as a my “heart goes out to you” gesture and his MAGA attack dogs have been berating anybody that has suggested otherwise. Jennings, of course, came out batting for the billionaire. And during a fiery segment on NewsNight with Abby Phillip on Monday evening, journalist Catherine Rampell, who explained that she was Jewish, demanded that Jennings do the same hand gesture live on air if he believed it was not controversial. The intense showdown saw Rampell make the demand twice as she and Jennings butted heads over their differing beliefs. Abby Phillip struggled to contain the madness as the WaPo journalist went for Jennings’ throat. The intensity between the two started building when Rampell rhymed off Musk’s rap sheet, namely supporting the “Nazi adjacent” far right AfD part in Germany and his dodgy gestures. Host Abby Phillip added her 10 cents, reminding Rampell that Musk also spurted out some questionable Nazi jokes on X after his salute, before her guest expressed confusion as to how the Tesla chief “keeps getting the benefit of the doubt.” “We’ve moved on from Trump derangement syndrome to Elon derangement syndrome,” Jennings replied, before trying to paint Musk as some sort of Jewish ally. Jennings, who is a conservative political strategist by trade, added: “Anybody who is asserting this thing he did on the stage the other day was a Sieg Heil, which I just heard you say, you know, lawyer up maybe because, absolute[ly] ridiculous thing to say.” Then Rampell clapped back with something sensational, throwing down the gauntlet to Jennings. “Why don’t you do it on TV right now? Why don’t you do it on TV right now if you think it’s so, so banal.” Jennings, unsurprisingly, was unmoved. But the challenge did achieve the rare feat of making him fall silent, for a few seconds at least. “This salute trutherism is outrageous. This is the most–,” he began before Rampell returned with the same challenge. Elon Musk made an awkward hand gesture at a Trump event after the president’s inauguration. / ANGELA WEISS / AFP via Getty Images “So do it right now on TV,” she demanded. “This is the biggest conspiracy theory–” his response began, before a fired up Rampell jumped in again. “Do it right now on TV. If you think it’s normal, if you think it’s a normal way to greet people, do it right now on TV! Why won’t you?” she said. Jennings once again fell silent before Abby Phillip finally grabbed the reigns again. She tried to remind Jennings of the reputation of the AfD in Germany, that they are “Nazi adjacent,” before he then argued that the Democrats claimed that is what the Republican party in the U.S. is. “I can’t believe that you are defending this,” Rampell said, before Abby Phillip asked if Jennings is really “putting it all on the line for the AfD.” Whenever he was pressed, Jennings either said he “doesn’t know anything about ******* politics” or claimed that the Democrats had called Republicans “fascists” during Trump’s presidential campaign last year and that this was just going over old ground. Wall Street firm downgrades AMD — but says it’s not because of DeepSeek Wall Street firm downgrades AMD — but says it’s not because of DeepSeek Melius Research moved to the sidelines on Advanced Micro Devices , but there isn’t any elephant in the room with this call. Analyst Ben Reitzes downgraded shares of the semiconductor stock to hold from buy. Reitzes also cut his two-year price target by $31 to $129, which now suggests shares can rise 12.2% over Monday’s close. Reitzes’ call comes a day after the stock dropped more than 6%, part of a global tech sell-off spurred by the emergence of an artificial intelligence model from ******** startup DeepSeek. Information about the timeframe and resources for DeepSeek’s product raised concern about the amount of spending on AI and data centers happening in the U.S., as well as if the country was actually a leader in the sector. But, “believe it or not, it’s not due to DeepSeek,” Reitzes said of his downgrade. “We should have done this 10 months ago after an epic run for AMD,” he said, noting shares were at one point up more than 40% during the first quarter of 2024. Shares finished 2024 down just over 18%. AMD 1Y mountain AMD, 1-year Reitzes said he’s “cautious” on the company’s x86 server business and its PC chip market. 13. Boeing (BA) 4Q 2024 earnings Boeing (BA) 4Q 2024 earnings Kelly Ortberg speaks at the 14th annual U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Foundation Aviation Summit in downtown Washington, D.C. Kris Tripplaar | SIPPL Sipa USA | AP Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg on Tuesday faces investors antsy for answers on how the company plans to move forward from manufacturing problems after posting its sixth consecutive annual loss. Boeing on Thursday released preliminary results showing it expects to post a loss of $4 billion for the fourth quarter and revenue of $15.2 billion, below analysts’ expectations. The company reported charges in its commercial aircraft unit and its defense and space business spanning aircraft from the Boeing 767 to the KC-46 tanker to the long-delayed pair of 747s that are set to serve as new Air Force One planes. Here’s what Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG expect: Loss per share: $2.65 adjustedRevenue: $16.21 billionRead more CNBC airline news The company last posted a profit in 2018. It later faced the fallout from a pair of fatal crashes of its bestselling 737 Max planes, the pandemic’s impact on air travel, a host of manufacturing defects and cost overruns, and early last year, a near-catastrophic midair blowout of a door panel on a nearly new Max 9 jetliner as it climbed out of Portland, Oregon. Boeing last week said its results were impacted, as expected, by a nearly two-month machinist strike that idled work on most of its aircraft and lengthened delivery delays to customers, which pay for the bulk of their planes when they’re received. Boeing said it expected to have burned through $3.5 billion in the fourth quarter, a difficult end to what was supposed to be a turnaround year. After the strike ended, Boeing resumed production of its 737 Max aircraft in December, and earlier this month, it restarted test flights of its 777X aircraft, which haven’t yet been certified by the FAA. Boeing is also working to certify the Max 7 and Max 10 aircraft, the smallest and largest models in the single-aisle Max family. Richard Baker | In Pictures | Getty Images While airline CEOs have largely supported Ortberg, who took the helm in August, key Boeing customers are still logging the effects of the delivery delays. American Airlines said over the weekend it made further cuts to its schedule because of late deliveries of new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which it also planned to use to launch a premium-seat-heavy configuration to capitalize on a consumer shift toward pricier, roomier seats. It plans to suspend service between Miami and Paris in June and July, and cut down on frequencies between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International to London in May, as well as from Dallas to Honolulu in June. “We’ll be proactively reaching out to our impacted customers to offer alternate travel arrangements and remain committed to mitigating the impact of these Boeing delays while continuing to offer a comprehensive global network,” American said in a statement. Meanwhile, the CEO of European budget airline Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, said Monday that the company had to cut its passenger traffic goal for the year because of “frustrating” Boeing delivery delays. Ortberg and other Boeing leaders are likely to face questions during the 10 a.m. ET analyst call about cost overruns and delays in the company’s defense division, including for the Air Force One aircraft, as well as potential tariffs and other policies of the new Trump administration. Is Guilty Gear Strive the best traditional fighting game available on the Nintendo Switch? I think it’s one of the biggest contenders. Featuring fantastic visuals, great performance, and all previously released content, it might be out at the end of the system’s lifecycle, but I’m glad Arc System Works took its time to ensure this port would look, run and feel as amazing as its beefier console counterparts. 16. Here’s what Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG expect: Loss per share: $2.65 adjusted Revenue: $16.21 billion A Boeing banner and an F-15EX jet fighter during the Farnborough International Airshow, on 22nd July 2024, at Farnborough, England. Richard Baker | In Pictures | Getty Images The company last posted a profit in 2018. Read more CNBC airline news While airline CEOs have largely supported Ortberg, who took the helm in August, key Boeing customers are still logging the effects of the delivery delays. 17. Dozens of Somerset residents unable to return home after floods Dozens of Somerset residents unable to return home after floods Jasmine Ketibuah-Foley BBC News, West of England BBC Communities across Somerset have been affected by floodwater Dozens of residents are not yet able to return home after a major incident was declared in Somerset due to severe flooding. A clean-up is under way after the floods caused by Storm Herminia forced 100 people to be evacuated on Monday, in Ilminster, Chard and South Petherton, as a precaution. A major incident notice, announced by Somerset Council on Monday, was stood down on Tuesday morning. A multi-agency response will be maintained until further notice and residents will also be offered accommodation for Tuesday night if needed, the council said. Among those affected in Chard was bridal shop owner Jean Pas, who said flood water ruined 200 of her dresses. “This is the second time it’s happened but it is worse this time than it was before,” she said. “There was mud everywhere. All of my stock is ruined.” Somerset Council opened two emergency rest centres, one in Ilminster and one in Chard. The clean-up operation is under way after Storm Herminia floods left behind mud and debris There are six flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, in place for Somerset, 12 for Wiltshire, eight for Gloucestershire and one for Bristol, said the Environment Agency. The alerts include a new red warning for Tewkesbury. Councillor Jason Baker said the Guildhall, Chard’s town hall, was overwhelmed with donations after it was opened as a place of refuge. “It was really nice to see the community pulling together for those who were really struggling,” he said. Council leader Bill Revans said it was “still responding to the incident”, and he was “mindful of further rain forecast over the next 24 hours”. “Please look out for your neighbours, don’t drive through floodwater, and always call 999 if you believe there is serious risk to life due to flooding,” he said. Somerset Council declared a major incident on Monday and evacuated more than 100 people from their homes Ian Withers, from the Environment Agency, said there was “a huge amount of water” in the rivers and the systems. “It’s impossible to predict where intense showers fall,” he said “So the message for us, our partners and communities is to think we could be the victims of this type of rain, and with climate change, that is more likely to happen, so we need to make our homes, businesses or travel plans more resilient. “We remain busy. This rain is continuing for most of today, but it is a little bit drier looking ahead.” Freezing temperatures are forecast for Tuesday and further rain is forecast for Wednesday, according to the Met Office. 18. All Workbenches in Sniper Elite Resistance Mission 1 Behind Enemy Lines All Workbenches in Sniper Elite Resistance Mission 1 Behind Enemy Lines Sniper Elite Resistance’s Behind Enemy Lines is Mission 1 and has the first Workbench in the game. The level lacks the depth and complexity of later maps, but it serves as an adequate introductory mission, and you can still miss the first Workbench if you’re not thorough. Behind Enemy Lines ticks all the right boxes to start a Campaign: Introduces us to Harry Hawker, has tutorials showing us the ropes of the gameplay, and its fairly linear structure prepares us for the more open levels. Plus, Sniper Elite Resistance Mission 1 features the Workbench Collectible. So let’s get the first mission done as easily as possible and get you on the board. Behind Enemy Lines Mission 1 Workbench Location in Sniper Elite Resistance Pick your poison. Image by Insider Gaming The Cog symbol is the Workbench. Image by Insider Gaming The Behind Enemy Lines Workbench is hidden behind a boarded-up door in Sniper Elite Resistance’s Mission 1. Using the two screenshots I’ve provided above, you can see how to get to the Workbench. Thankfully, unlike later levels, there’s only one to find this time around. However, due to Sniper Elite‘s gameplay and openness, you can easily finish the level and miss it. From the start of the level, you can only follow one linear path to reach the Workbench area. It requires you to go under the bridge, shoot the Dam, and climb up. Once you get to the top, the Workbench is in the house in front of you. Inside, on the left, you find a boarded-up door. There are three ways to deal with boarded-up doorways in Sniper Elite Resistance: Use a found Crowbar. Dismantle them using your hands. Shoot the boards. Each solution depends on the situation. Here, a Crowbar is found next to the door, making this the easiest and quietest solution. Pull the boards off the door, head inside, and the Workbench is here. Walk up to it and interact with it to register the Collectible, putting the Collectible’s location on the map for any subsequent playthroughs of the mission. What Do Workbenches Do in Sniper Elite Resistance? Workbenches are used to acquire new weapons and part upgrades and have been featured in Sniper Elite before. To unlock new Suppressors, recoil-reducing parts, and much more, you need to find Workbenches and use them. It makes the game easier for you and makes the daunting task of completing missions on Authentic Difficulty more palatable—making Resistance’s Trophies and Achievements list easier as well. This is one of the easier Workbenches to find in Sniper Elite Resistance. Do you plan to find them all? Are you enjoying your Sniper Elite Resistance? Let us know below. 20. Bookshop.org is now selling ebooks Bookshop.org is now selling ebooks Independent book stores can now get a cut of the ebook market. Today, Bookshop.org announced the addition of ebooks to its website. As it does with physical books, the online retailer prompts shoppers to designate a local book store at checkout, then sends part of the purchase price to that store. Since it started selling physical volumes in 2020, Bookshop.org has funneled more than $35 million to indie booksellers. During a recent chat, CEO Andy Hunter told me hundreds of stores have credited Bookshop.org with their ability to stay in business through the shutdowns caused by the pandemic. Now through the added ebook sales, those stores will have one more revenue stream — and shoppers will have another way to support neighborhood stores. “It’s not a good business strategy to say, ‘Come to us for your books, but when you need an ebook, go to Amazon'” he said. The site will offer more than three million ebooks from every major publisher and the entire profit from the ***** will go to the customer’s chosen store. If a user doesn’t designate a store, profits will partly channel into a pool for all participating bookstores and the rest will return to Bookshop.org. The company will also make money from publisher ads on its website. Because ebook prices are set by the publisher, titles will cost the same as they do from Amazon, Kobo, Google Books or elsewhere. In addition to the new category, Bookshop.org is also introducing a new reader app for iOS and Android devices today. Through the app, readers can explore curated lists of books, search the ebook catalog, read previews and add books to their wishlist. You’ll still need to head to Bookshop.org on a browser to make purchases — just as you do with other ebook sellers so they can avoid Apple and Google’s steep in-app billing commissions. (Though, on tangental note, Bookshop.org’s website now accepts Google and Apple Pay.) Reading books on the app should feel familiar to anyone who’s used a tablet or smartphone ereader app, offering highlights, annotations, type and font adjustments and text searches. In addition to swipeable pages, you can also set the text to a vertical endless scroll mode, an option I haven’t seen in other ereader apps. Bookshop.org Probably the most intriguing feature is Quote Sharing. As I was talking with Hunter, he pointed out that when people share quotes from books on social media, it’s often via a typed-out quote alongside a picture snapped of the physical page or the cover of the book. If you want to read that book, you’re going to have to put in a little work to find it and buy it. With Quote Sharing in the Bookshop.org app or browser reader, up to 300 characters of text can be highlighted and shared on Facebook, X, Threads, Bluesky or anywhere else you can share regular weblinks. The generated link creates a formatted post with the quote, along with the book cover image. Anyone who clicks the link will be taken to a webpage with the quote in context, above a button to buy the book. Hunter says the goal is to “make conversations around books feel like a native part of the social web.” As someone who is invested in ereaders, I asked whether Bookshop.org ebooks would be readable on Kindles or Kobos. Hunter told me his company is already working on compatibility with Kobo devices and has also been in talks with Amazon to potentially allow Kindles to display titles purchased from Bookshop.org. Integration with Kobo could come as early as this year; Amazon cooperation will likely take longer. Another forthcoming feature allows indie booksellers to sell ebooks directly from the bookstore’s own website using Bookshop.org’s tech. That partnership won’t be available at launch but should go live in spring of 2025. Hunter told me a story from the initial investor phase from the print-only iteration of Bookshop.org. When potential investors learned he couldn’t beat Amazon on price or speed, he was laughed out of the room. They assumed no one would be willing to pay more or wait longer for a book, no matter how worthy they thought independent bookstores might be. Five-plus years later, not only were those investors proven wrong — the company’s continued existence suggests at least some people can spare a few extra bucks and some patience to support bookstores — now with ebooks, Bookshop.org can indeed match Amazon on both price and speed, since even the largest e-retailer can’t discount ebooks and delivery is instantaneous no matter where you buy from. 21. CD rates today, January 28, 2025 (Lock in up to 4.32% APY) CD rates today, January 28, 2025 (Lock in up to 4.32% APY) The Federal Reserve lowered the federal funds rate twice this year. As a result, deposit account rates are on the decline. The good news: You can lock in a competitive return on a certificate of deposit (CD) today and preserve your earning power. In fact, the best CDs still pay rates above 4%. Read on for a snapshot of CD rates today and where to find the best offers. CDs today typically offer rates significantly higher than traditional savings accounts. As of January, the best short-term CDs (six to 12 months) generally offer rates around 4.00% to 4.50% APY. Today, the highest CD rate 4.32% APY, offered by Nexbank on its 1-year CD. There is a large minimum opening deposit of $25,000 required. The next-highest CD rate comes from Marcus by Goldman Sachs on its 9-month CD at 4.30% APY. There is a $500 minimum opening deposit required. The following is a look at some of the best CD rates available today from our verified partners. This embedded content is not available in your region. See our picks for the best CD accounts and rates>> The 2000s were marked by the dot-com bubble and later, the global financial crisis of 2008. Though the early 2000s saw relatively higher CD rates, they began to fall as the economy slowed and the Federal Reserve cut its target rate to stimulate growth. By 2009, in the aftermath of the financial crisis, the average one-year CD paid around 1% APY, with five-year CDs at less than 2% APY. The trend of falling CD rates continued into the 2010s, especially after the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The Fed’s policies to stimulate the economy (in particular, its decision to keep its benchmark interest rate near zero) led banks to offer very low rates on CDs. By 2013, average rates on 6-month CDs fell to about 0.1% APY, while 5-year CDs returned an average of 0.8% APY. However, things changed between 2015 and 2018, when the Fed started gradually increasing rates again. At this point, there was a slight improvement in CD rates as the economy expanded, marking the end of nearly a decade of ultra-low rates. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 led to emergency rate cuts by the Fed, causing CD rates to fall to new record lows. The situation reversed following the pandemic as inflation began to spiral out of control. This prompted the Fed to hike rates 11 times between March 2022 and July 2023. In turn, this led to higher rates on loans and higher APYs on savings products, including CDs. Fast forward to September 2024 — the Fed finally decided to cut the federal funds rate after it determined that inflation was essentially under control. Today, we’re beginning to see CD rates come down from their peak. Even so, CD rates remain high by historical standards. Take a look at how CD rates have changed since 2009: Traditionally, longer-term CDs have offered higher interest rates compared to shorter-term CDs. This is because locking in money for a longer ******* typically carries more risk (namely, missing out on higher rates in the future), which banks compensate for with higher rates. However, this pattern doesn’t necessarily hold today; the highest average CD rate is for a 12-month term. This indicates a flattening or inversion of the yield curve, which can happen in uncertain economic times or when investors expect future interest rates to decline. Read more: Short- or long-term CD: Which is best for you? When opening a CD, choosing one with a high APY is just one piece of the puzzle. There are other factors that can impact whether a particular CD is best for your needs and your overall return. Consider the following when choosing a CD: Your goals: Decide how long you’re willing to lock away your funds. CDs come with fixed terms, and withdrawing your money before the term ends can result in penalties. Common terms range from a few months up to several years. The right term for you depends on when you anticipate needing access to your money. Type of financial institution: Rates can vary significantly among financial institutions. Don’t just check with your current bank; research CD rates from online banks, local banks, and credit unions. Online banks, in particular, often offer higher interest rates than traditional brick-and-mortar banks because they have lower overhead costs. However, make sure any online bank you consider is FDIC-insured (or NCUA-insured for credit unions). Account terms: Beyond the interest rate, understand the terms of the CD, including the maturity date and withdrawal penalties. Also, check if there’s a minimum deposit requirement and if so, that fits your budget. Inflation: While CDs can offer safe, fixed returns, they might not always keep pace with inflation, especially for longer terms. Consider this when deciding on the term and amount to invest. 24. 66 million-year-old fossilised vomit discovered in Denmark 66 million-year-old fossilised vomit discovered in Denmark A piece of fossilized vomit dating back to the time of the dinosaurs has been discovered in Denmark. Local fossil hunter Peter Bennicke found the fossil at Stevns Klint – a Unesco-listed coastal cliff in the east of the country. The self-declared “fossil geek” said he came across some unusual-looking fragments which turned out to be pieces of sea lily – an underwater species related to starfish and sea urchins – in a piece of chalk. Mr Bennicke took the fragments to be examined at the Museum of East Zealand, which confirmed the vomit could be dated to the end of the Cretaceous ******* 66 million years ago – a time when dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus and Diplodocus existed. Jesper Milan, palaeontologist and curator at the museum, told the BBC it was “truly an unusual find” as it helps explain relationships in the prehistoric food chain. “It tells us something about who was eating who 66 million years ago,” he said. During the ******* fish and sharks would eat sea lilies, which are hard to digest meaning they would then “regurgitate all the chalk bits”, he explained. “This find is a unique glimpse into the everyday situation in the bottom of the Cretaceous sea – the sea during which the dinosaurs lived,” he said. The discovery is also significant for improving our understanding of past ecosystems. Mr Milan said his museum had only sent the information to the local press but the discovery has sparked global interest. “This is the world’s most famous piece of ***** ever,” he said.
