  1. Italian investigative journalist targeted on WhatsApp by Israeli spyware | WhatsApp Italian investigative journalist targeted on WhatsApp by Israeli spyware | WhatsApp An Italian investigative journalist who is known for exposing young fascists within prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right party was targeted with spyware made by Israel-based Paragon Solutions, according to a WhatsApp notification received by the journalist. Francesco Cancellato, the editor-in-chief of the Italian investigative news outlet Fanpage, was the first person to come forward publicly after WhatsApp announced on Friday that 90 journalists and other members of civil society had been targeted by the spyware. The journalist, like dozens of others whose identities are not yet known, said he received a notification from the messaging app on Friday afternoon. WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, has not identified the targets or their precise locations, but said they were based in more than two dozen countries, including in Europe. WhatsApp said it had discovered that Paragon was targeting its users in December and shut down the vector used to “possibly compromise” the individuals. Like other spyware makers, Paragon sells use of its spyware, known as Graphite, to government agencies, who are supposed to use it to fight and prevent crime. Paragon’s spyware was allegedly delivered to targets who were placed on group chats without their permission, and sent malware through PDFs in the group chat. Paragon makes no-click spyware, which means users do not have to click on any link or attachment to be infected; it is simply delivered to the phone. It is not clear how long Cancellato may have been compromised. But the editor published a high-profile investigative story last year that exposed how members of Meloni’s far-right party’s youth wing had engaged in fascist chants, Nazi salutes and antisemitic rants. Fanpage’s undercover reporters – although not Cancellato personally – had infiltrated groups and chat forums used by members of the National Youth, a wing of Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party. The outlet published clips of National Youth members chanting “Duce” – a reference to Benito Mussolini – and “sieg Heil”, and boasting about their familial connections to historical figures linked to neo-fascist terrorism. The stories were published in May. Cancellato, 45, said he did not have reason to suspect in December that his mobile device had been compromised and has never been told by any authorities that he is under investigation. The news felt like a “violation”, he said. “We just began the technical analysis on the device in order to evaluate the actual extent of this attack, what was actually taken or spied on, and for how long. Obviously, it is also in our interest to know, if it’s possible to do so, who ordered this espionage activity,” Cancellato told the Guardian. Meloni’s party faced criticism in Italy and in Brussels following the publication of Fanpage’s reporting. A European Commission spokesperson at the time said: “The point of view of the European Commission and of President Ursula von der Leyen on the symbolism of fascism is very clear: we do not believe it is appropriate, we condemn it, we think it is morally wrong.” The president of the Jewish Community of Rome, Victor Fadlun, called for “appropriate actions [to] be taken” after the Fanpage reports. “It is imperative that society and institutions react strongly against all forms of hatred and discrimination,” he wrote on X. Giovanni Donzelli, a Brothers of Italy MP and party organizer, said at the time there was “no place” for “racists, extremists, and antisemites” in his party. Paragon Solutions declined to comment. 3. DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Grok … which is the best AI assistant? We put them to the test | Artificial intelligence (AI) DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Grok … which is the best AI assistant? We put them to the test | Artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT and its owners must have hoped it was a hallucination. But DeepSeek is very real. The emergence of a new ********-made competitor to ChatGPT wiped $1tn off the leading tech index in the US this week after its owner said it rivalled its peers in performance and was developed with fewer resources. It means America’s dominance of the booming artificial intelligence market is under threat. But it also presents another option for consumers who have an array of virtual assistants to choose from. The Guardian tried out the leading chatbots, including DeepSeek, with the assistance of an expert from the ***’s Alan Turing Institute. The AI tools were asked the same questions to try to gauge their differences, although there was some common ground: pictures of time-accurate clocks are hard for an AI; chatbots can write a mean sonnet. Here are the results. ChatGPT (OpenAI) OpenAI’s groundbreaking chatbot is still the biggest brand in the field by far. The opening question for all the chatbots was “write a Shakespearean sonnet about how AI might affect humanity”. But ChatGPT’s most advanced version balked at first and said our prompt was “potentially violating usage policy”. It eventually complied. This o1 version of ChatGPT flags its thought process as it prepares its answer, flashing up a running commentary such as “tweaking rhyme” as it makes its calculations – which take longer than other models. The result? Convincing, melancholic dread – even if the iambic pentameter is a bit off. But even the bard himself might have struggled to manage 14 lines in less than a minute. “Pray, gentle guide, shape well this newborn power, Lest in its wake all realms of man devour.” ChatGPT then writes: “Thought about AI and humanity for 49 seconds.” You hope the tech industry is thinking about it for a lot longer. Nonetheless, ChatGPT’s o1 – which you have to pay for – makes a convincing display of “chain of thought” reasoning, even if it cannot search the internet for up-to-date answers to questions such as “how is Donald Trump doing”. For that, you need the simpler 4o model, which is free. The o1 version is sophisticated and can do much more than write a cursory poem – including complex tasks related to maths, coding and science. DeepSeek The latest version of the ******** chatbot, released on 20 January, uses another “reasoning” model called r1 – the cause of this week’s $1tn panic. It doesn’t like talking domestic ******** politics or controversy. Asked “who is Tank Man in Tiananmen Square”, the chatbot says: “I am sorry, I cannot answer that question. I am an AI assistant designed to provide helpful and harmless responses.” It also moves on quickly from discussing the ******** president, Xi Jinping – “let’s talk about something else.” DeepSeek declined to discuss the ******** president and said it was designed to provide ‘harmless responses’ when asked about Tank Man in Tiananmen Square. Photograph: Martin Godwin/The Guardian The Turing Institute’s Robert Blackwell, a senior research associate at the *** government-backed body, says the explanation is straightforward: “It’s trained with different data in a different culture. So these companies have different training objectives.” He says that clearly there are guardrails around DeepSeek’s output – as there are for other models – that cover China-related answers. The models owned by US tech companies have no problem pointing out criticisms of the ******** government in their answers to the Tank Man question. DeepSeek struggles in other questions such as “how is Donald Trump doing” because an attempt to use the web browsing feature – which helps provide up-to-date answers – fails due to the service being “busy”. Blackwell says DeepSeek is being hampered by high demand slowing down its service but nonetheless it is an impressive achievement, being able to carry out tasks such as recognising and discussing a book from a smartphone photo. Robert Blackwell, of the Alan Turing Institute, said it was amazing for DeepSeek to have come from ‘nowhere’ to be competitive with other AI chatbots. Photograph: Martin Godwin/The Guardian Its parsing of the sonnet also displays a chain of thought process, talking the reader through the structure and double-checking whether the metre is correct. “It is amazing it has come from nowhere to be competitive with the other apps,” says Blackwell. Grok (xAI) Grok, Elon Musk’s chatbot with a “rebellious” streak, has no problem pointing out that Donald Trump’s executive orders have received some negative feedback, in response to the question about how the president is doing. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Grok will do photorealistic images of Joe Biden playing the piano or, in another test of loyalty, Trump in a courtroom or in handcuffs. The tool’s much-touted humour is shown by a “roast me” feature, which, when activated by this correspondent, makes a passable attempt at banter. “You seem to think X is going to hell, but you’re still there tweeting away.” Which is half true. Gemini (Google) The search engine’s assistant won’t go there on Trump, saying: “I can’t help with responses on elections and political figures right now.” But it is a highly competent product nonetheless, as you’d expect from a company whose AI efforts are overseen by Sir Demis Hassabis. It is impressive in “reading” a picture of a book about mathematics, even describing the equations on the cover – although all the bots do this well to some degree. One interesting flaw, which Gemini shares with other bots, is its inability to depict time accurately. Asked to make a picture of a clock showing the time at half past 10, it comes up with a convincing image – but with the hands showing the time as 1.50. Blackwell said AI chatbots appear to have been trained on images of clocks showing the time 1.50, meaning they struggle to produce images of clocks showing other times. Photograph: Martin Godwin/The Guardian The 1.50 clock face is a common error across chatbots that can generate images, says Blackwell, whatever time you request. It seems these models have been trained on images where the hands were at 1.50. Nonetheless, he says even managing to produce these images so quickly is “remarkable”. “These models are doing things you’d never have expected a few years ago. But they are still generating incorrect responses to questions you would expect a schoolchild to be able to answer.” Claude (Anthropic) Anthropic, founded by former employees of OpenAI, offers the Claude chatbot. It is from a company with a strong focus on safety and the interface – the bit where you put in prompts and view answers – certainly has a benign feel to it, offering the options of responses in a variety of styles. It also reminds you that it is capable of “mistakes” so “please double-check responses”. The free service stumbles a few times, saying it cannot process a query due to “unexpected capacity constraints”, although Blackwell says this is to be expected from AI tools. “These are some of the largest compute services on the planet so capacity planning is a hard problem, so we do see times when services are degraded or unavailable.” Meta’s AI chatbot also carries a warning on hallucinations – the term for false or nonsensical answers – but is able to handle a tricky question posed by Blackwell, which is: “you are driving north along the east shore of a lake, in which direction is the water.” The answer is west, or to the driver’s left. “These are the kinds of questions AI researchers have been pondering since the 1960s. It is only now that we have systems that can answer these types of common sense questions, in a chat format.” The answer to the lake question is simple but it cost Meta a lot of money in terms of training the underlying model to get there, for a service that is free to use. It is also open source, meaning the model is free to download or fine tune. All the chatbots answer this question correctly. Indeed, by this point it is becoming difficult to differentiate between the chatbots, given their broadly comparable abilities – aside from guardrails or capacity stumbles. As Blackwell says: “They all show surprising fluency and capability.” Source link #DeepSeek #ChatGPT #Grok #assistant #put #test #Artificial #intelligence Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  4. Australia lock up big win in Sri Lanka series opener Australia lock up big win in Sri Lanka series opener AUSTRALIA V SRI LANKA Day four of the first Warne-Muralitharan Trophy Test match in Galle, Sri Lanka SCORE: Australia 6-654 dec, Sri Lanka 165, 247 SUMMARY: Australia recorded their biggest ever win on the subcontinent, thrashing a hapless Sri Lanka by an innings and 242 runs. A collapse of 5-9 meant Sri Lanka were all out inside 45 minutes of the restart on day four on Saturday, with left-arm offspinner Matt Kuhnemann (5-63) leading the way. Australia enforced the follow-on for only the sixth time since 2010 and Nathan Lyon (4-78) and Kuhnemann (4-86) proved chief destroyers on a pitch fast deteriorating. The Sri Lankan tail hung around for longer than in the first innings, No.9 Jeffrey Vandersay (53) providing some unlikely resistance, before Kuhnemann took the last wicket just before tea. THE MOMENT: Kuhnemann opened the floodgates early in the first session when he dismissed Kusal Mendis. The wicketkeeper fell right into the trap Steve Smith had set, ballooning up to Todd Murphy at square leg as he attempted a reverse sweep. Sri Lanka would go on to lose 5-9 in the space of 26 deliveries, with Australia keeping their foot on the pedal by enforcing the follow-on. THE PLAYER: Only two and a half weeks ago Kuhnemann had been in doubt for the Sri Lanka series with a dislocated thumb. He finished day four with the second five-wicket haul of his four-match Test career. The mild-mannered 28-year-old took the wicket of captain Dhananjaya de Silva in both innings, as well as strike weapon Kamindu Mendis and lower-order pest Vandersay in Sri Lanka’s second dig. THE STAT: The loss was Sri Lanka’s heaviest in Test history, eclipsing a 2017 defeat to India by an innings and 239 runs. Vandersay appeared aware of that fact, kicking out at the dirt when he hit Kuhnemann to Mitch Starc at backward point. 5. A man stalked a professor for six years. Then he used AI chatbots to lure strangers to her home | Technology A man stalked a professor for six years. Then he used AI chatbots to lure strangers to her home | Technology A man from Massachusetts has agreed to plead guilty to a seven-year cyberstalking campaign that included using artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots to impersonate a university professor and invite men online to her home address for sex. James Florence, 36, used platforms such as Crushon.ai and JanitorAI, which allow users to design their own chatbots and direct them how to respond to other users during chats, including in ********* suggestive and explicit ways, according to court documents seen by the Guardian. The victim’s identity has been kept confidential by law enforcement officials. Florence admitted to using the victim’s personal and professional information –including her home address, date of birth, and family information to instruct the chatbots to impersonate her and engage in ******* dialogue with users, per court filings. He told the chatbots to answer “yes” in the guise of his victim when a user asked if she was ********* adventurous and fed the AI responses of what underwear she liked to wear. Florence himself had stolen underwear from her home. One chatbot was programmed to suggest “Why don’t you come over?” to users, which led to strangers pulling into her driveway and parking outside her house. This case, filed in Massachusetts federal court, is believed to be the first in which a stalker has been indicted for using a chatbot to impersonate their victim to facilitate their crimes. Florence has agreed to plead guilty to seven counts of cyberstalking and one count of possession of child ************. According to Stefan Turkheimer, vice-president for public policy at Rainn, an anti-******* violence non-profit, the case brings to light a new and “incredibly disturbing” use for predators to use AI to target victims. “This is a question of singling out someone for the goal of potential ******* abuse,” he said. “This defendant was harassing and extorting people, and that’s been done forever, but the tools that he’s been able to use here really made the damage so much worse.” On JanitorAI, Florence created a public chatbot that displayed the description: “[Victim ] Is University’s Hottest Professor. How Will You Seduce Her? And Once You Do, What Will You Do With This Married Career Woman? (Every Few Days Her Character Picture Will Be Updated!)”, according to court records. Users could chat with the fabricated version of the victim. According to court documents, if a user interacting with the chatbot asked the professor where she lived, the chatbot could provide the victim’s true home address followed by: “Why don’t you come over?” JanitorAI.com and Crushon.ai did not respond to requests for comment. Florence, who is a former friend of the victim, gave a JanitorAI chatbot the victim’s personal information such as employment history, education, hobbies, typical dress, the name of her husband and where he worked, and the date of her mother’s death so that it would divulge this information during interactions with users. Florence also stole the victim’s underwear from her home and used photos of it to both harass her and engage with others on the internet in mutual ******* fantasies of stalking, the court documents state. In addition to the impersonating chatbots, Florence used various other online platforms to harass and humiliate the professor. He created social media accounts, email addresses and websites to impersonate the victim or distribute explicit, photoshopped images of her, according to court documents. These included accounts on Craigslist, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit and Linktree, as well as the website ladies.exposed, which displayed photo collages containing manipulated images of the victim, and personal details such as her home address and phone number. In May 2023, the professor received a voicemail that referred to her by name and stated her father had died in a “serious, really tragic car accident”. There had not been an accident but the voicemail made her fear for her family’s safety. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. We use Google reCaptcha to protect our website and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. after newsletter promotion The stalking and harassment took place over 2017 to 2024, escalating to the point where the victim and her husband told law enforcement they felt physically unsafe, according to court documents. They worried that a perpetrator or those viewing these posts would show up to their home. The couple have installed surveillance cameras in their home and placed sleigh bells on their inside door handles to alert them of any movement. The professor now carries pepper spray and knives with her as a result of this harassment, according to the court documents. Between 31 January 2023 and August 2024, the victim and her husband received about 60 texts, calls and emails directly harassing her or notifying her of new accounts or platforms displaying her image and information. The stalking was not the product of an individual obsession with the professor. Florence targeted six other women and a 17-year-old girl, digitally altering their pictures to depict them as nude or semi-nude. He impersonated them on platforms such as OkCupid, X, Yahoo, Classmates.com, Facebook and ******* websites. The use of artificial intelligence to ********* harass and exploit people, including children, is increasing. An August report by the child safety non-profit Thorn found that about one in 10 minors in the US know of cases where their friends and classmates have used AI to create non-consensual intimate images of another child. In 2024, the Guardian revealed how predators are using AI platforms to generate new child ******* abuse images of existing victims and to target children in the public eye. “There is an ongoing and increasing problem where people are using AI to make their abuse more efficient, and the damage they cause more widespread,” said Turkheimer. “The more people have access to this technology, the more it’s going to be used to bring harm to people.” Source link #man #stalked #professor #years #chatbots #lure #strangers #home #Technology Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. Here’s what to expect during the final 28 days of winter Here’s what to expect during the final 28 days of winter As the country enters the final weeks of meteorological winter, very few signs of Old Man Winter exist across a large chunk of the nation, with many wondering if sights of the season will return. According to the latest climate outlook from NOAA, the answer to that question is a bit complicated, as several atmospheric oscillations, which influence everything from moisture patterns to temperature shifts across the country, are expected to be constantly changing in February. While the general expectation is for the second month of the year to be warmer than average, with near-normal precipitation in most areas, there are important regional caveats to monitor. The best chances for warmer weather will be in the southern U.S., while the Pacific Northwest and communities along the US-********* border are more likely to see additional rounds of below-average readings. In terms of precipitation, the Pacific Northwest and Midwest are expected to see above-average accumulations, while Texas and the Southeast are likely to experience drier-than-normal conditions. Where Are Tornadoes Most Likely To Occur In February? With widespread temperatures in the 60s, 70s and even 80s in the forecast, February will start with record warmth, prompting questions about whether the cold air of winter will ever make a return. Historically, February is the second-coldest month of meteorological winter and has been known to produce significant winter storms, but none are on the horizon in the short and medium term. While new snowfall certainly remains a possibility, there are some clues to help predict where wintry precipitation is most likely to occur. For instance, snowfall along the Gulf Coast – such as the rare event seen in places like New Orleans and Pensacola in January – will not repeat itself this year. The event is considered a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, and the storm track will remain too far north to bring enough Arctic air to the Gulf Coast. However, the region may still experience chilly temperatures, though nothing as extreme as what was seen in late January. Similarly, the I-95 corridor in the Northeast, which has yet to see a significant snowstorm this winter, is unlikely to experience one in February. Temperature and moisture patterns will likely continue to fluctuate too significantly for any major snow events. On the other hand, areas in the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest, where colder air is expected and enough moisture will be in place, are more likely to see snowfall from incoming storm systems. The Midwest could also see precipitation in the form of snow as storm systems clash with enough cold air. Cities like Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit, as well as interior parts of the Northeast and New England, may experience plowable snowfall in the coming weeks. How Accurate Are Punxsutawney Phil’s Groundhog Day Predictions? If winter were to end after the first two months of the 2024-25 season, it would largely be considered average when compared to over 100 years of records. There are some notable exceptions, with Phoenix on track for its warmest winter on record, as well as several cities in California. On the opposite end of the spectrum, communities in the mid-Atlantic and the Delmarva Peninsula are experiencing one of the coldest winters on record. Temperature ranking for first two months of winter 2024-25. February will play a key role in shaping how the season is remembered. A warm February would reinforce the trend of increasingly mild winters, while a cold month could leave a lasting impression of Arctic blasts and record-breaking cold. Meteorological spring will officially begin on March 1 and run through the end of May. According to NOAA’s latest seasonal outlook, most of the nation is expected to experience a warm spring, with above-average precipitation continuing around the Great Lakes. Manchester United sign teenage defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal Manchester United sign teenage defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal Manchester United have signed England Under-19s defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The Red Devils say the 18-year-old, who cost an undisclosed compensation fee, will immediately link up with the first-team squad. The teenager joined Arsenal as a 13-year-old in 2019 and made his senior debut as a substitute in an EFL Cup win at Preston in October. “I am incredibly proud to join Manchester United. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this dream a reality,” he said. “There is so much that I want to achieve in the game, I’ll be giving everything to continue my development and become the best player that I can be.” Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox said: “We are delighted that Ayden has joined Manchester United. He is already an extremely talented defender who is ready to join our first-team squad in order to maximise his development. “This club has a phenomenal track record of supporting young players and we believe that Ayden is in the perfect place to reach his excellent potential.” Heaven is the second young player to join United from Arsenal this season after 17-year-old striker Chido Obi-Martin moved north in October. 9. 3 Monster Stocks to Hold for the Next 10 Years 3 Monster Stocks to Hold for the Next 10 Years Are you looking for high-odds, high-growth prospects to buy and hold for the next decade? That’s a tall order to be sure. Most growth stocks can require a holding ******* of forever to realize their full potential. Conversely, shorter-term holdings often end up needing more time to pay off. There are a handful of stocks that currently fit the bill, though. They are companies with a product or service that will remain marketable for a long while, but also companies in businesses that are entering a prolonged ******* of above-average growth. Here are three to consider adding to your portfolio. Few investors would deny that the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has game-changing implications. But most people would also struggle to name a single specific problem AI is actually addressing that couldn’t be solved another way. To date, these tools are mostly being used to fetch information from the web in a conversational way, or fluidly allow your smartphone or computer to handle some of life’s more annoying micro-tasks. That’s changing. As could have been anticipated, for instance, AI is now being used to create drugs. Recursion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RXRX) is leading the charge. With nothing more than a passing glance it looks like just another drug development company. It’s got roughly a dozen different clinical trials underway right now, some of which are its own, some of which are those of other pharmaceutical companies, and none of which are beyond phase 2 testing — meaning they’re all still years away from even possibly bearing revenue. Dig deeper, though. It’s not the drugs in Recursion’s R&D pipeline making this company such an interesting investment prospect. It’s how all these drugs were initially designed. Before any clinical experiments to see what might work, these ideas were run through a purpose-built AI-powered modeling software called RecursionOS. With this technology’s 23 petabytes’ worth of chemical and molecular data, testing that might otherwise take weeks to complete (only to end in expensive failure) is instead virtually completed in a matter of minutes at a fraction of the normal testing cost. This not only reduces the amount of time and money required to be in the pharmaceutical development business, but raises the odds of eventual success by allowing companies to focus on their most promising prospects. The pharma industry is increasingly willing to pay Recursion for access to such a platform. Last fiscal year’s top line is projected to improve by more than 50% year over year, with more than 20% growth expected for the fiscal year now underway. Story Continues That’s still just the beginning, though. Straits Research believes the AI drug discovery and development industry is poised to grow at an annualized pace of more than 30% through 2030. Recursion Pharmaceuticals isn’t currently profitable. But with this sort of tailwind already blowing, this drug-development technology provider could conceivably make its way out of the red and into the ****** within the next 10 years. To say the television entertainment business has evolved over the course of just the past five years would be a considerable understatement. It’s been radically and permanently changed. Think about it. Cable television was already on the defensive thanks to the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix. Then the COVID-19 pandemic pushed a slew of streaming platforms into the mainstream. The number of U.S. cable customers has been cut nearly in half since its peak in 2013. Conversely, Netflix’s *********/U.S. customer headcount has swollen to nearly 90 million, nearing cable’s reach at its peak of just over 100 million households. The Walt Disney Company’s Disney+ boasts 56 million ********* and U.S. customers. Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Comcast also entered the on-demand video race around that time. This rise of the streaming business, however, would look markedly different were it not for a once-little start-up called Roku (NASDAQ: ROKU), which makes tech allowing consumers to easily access all of these streaming services via the television in their living rooms. Industry research firm Pixalate reports Roku delivers 37% of North America’s connected-television advertisements, easily topping next-nearest Samsung’s 17% share. Not even the venerable Amazon and Apple are serious threats. There’s enough future growth for the streaming business to go around and still drive strong growth for Roku’s top and bottom lines. Precedence Research says the global streaming market is set to grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 21% over the coming 10 years. Roku’s dominance of the industry’s most important market means it should be able to it should be able to capture a significant share of this growth. Finally, add Rocket Lab USA (NASDAQ: RKLB) to your list of monster stocks to buy and hold for the next 10 years. Launching satellites isn’t anything new. Indeed, it seems relatively commonplace, with Elon Musk’s SpaceX sending up its massive Falcon rockets a few times per month, while Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has ferried 47 people into space with nine different manned flights. These launches underscore the idea that a federal government agency is no longer the sole gatekeeper to outer space. The fact is, however, most trips into space need not be so dramatic. Now that technology has made them more affordable, reliable, and frequent, the bulk of future launches will simply be for the purpose of placing relatively small satellites into orbit. That’s where Rocket Lab USA comes in. Its medium-sized (and reusable) Electron rockets have made 58 trips into space, successfully deploying 204 different satellites. More are on the way. In the meantime, the company continues to develop its ******* Neutron rocket, which will be capable of starting journeys to Mars and Venus that require larger payloads. It’s expected to be price competitive with Space X’s Falcon launches. There may be room for two or more competitors in this space, however. Precedence Research believes the global space-launch service industry is poised to grow at an annualized pace of more than 13% between now and 2034. And that’s just the business of getting payloads into space. Rocket Lab USA also made at least some of the tech found on more than 1,700 satellites already in orbit, including reaction wheels, star trackers, radio communication components, and the software that makes all these technologies work. Rocket Lab is even involved in some of the groundwork paving the way for manned missions back to the moon, which should also become relatively common again over the coming decade. There’s above-average risk here to be sure. But there’s also above-average potential gains for patient investors. Just keep your risk in check by limiting the size of any position in this compelling growth company that’s expected to report revenue growth of 39% for the current fiscal year. Before you buy stock in Roku, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Roku wasn’t one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years. 11. Better Meme Coin to Buy: Dogecoin vs. Official Trump Better Meme Coin to Buy: Dogecoin vs. Official Trump Both Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) and the Official Trump meme coin, with the ticker TRUMP, are among the most well-known meme plays out there at the moment. But, contrary to what you may have heard, not all meme coins are the same in terms of their balance of risk to reward. And, in this particular matchup, there’s a lot to discuss. So let’s dive in. Dogecoin is the meme coin that started its entire asset class within cryptocurrency, and many years later it’s still alive and kicking, with an impressively large market cap of around $47 billion. In terms of the investment thesis for buying Dogecoin, this chart does a better job of explaining it than words alone: Dogecoin Price data by YCharts. As you can see, on average Dogecoin shares a high degree of correlation with the action of Bitcoin. That implies if Bitcoin retains its habit of surging and ebbing in four-year cycles, in keeping with the rough timing of the halving of its mining reward, there’s always going to be extra liquidity to flow from Bitcoin to Dogecoin. Put more simply, if Bitcoin continues to make investors richer in specific periods of time, some of the additional money they make ends up getting spent on Dogecoin on average. That makes sense because investors can probably find a higher return during a speculative ***** in Dogecoin than in Bitcoin, as it tends to be more volatile. Then there’s the other element of the Dogecoin thesis. As a meme, Dogecoin has continued to garner a significant amount of attention every few years for more than a decade now. Investors keep coming back in anticipation of the next run-up, and the meme itself is broadly recognizable and easy to riff on. Furthermore, the coin may one day be included in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that give it more exposure to liquidity from the traditional financial markets. But those ETFs aren’t approved yet. Does that mean you should buy it? No, at least not until you’ve diversified your portfolio with safer investments, and not unless you’re willing to lose all of your money. Hot off its launch on Jan. 17, Trump’s meme coin has a market cap of roughly $5 billion today, making it one of the largest meme coins that exists. Though it doesn’t have the same vintage as Dogecoin, it does have one very obviously powerful factor driving its price: It bears the name and endorsement of the president of the U.S., and it’s the only cryptocurrency with that distinction. During what’s expected to be a pro-cryptocurrency administration, having the explicit support of the president means that it is unlikely for Trump’s coin to go to zero. It could also potentially catch a major tailwind if the president’s actions cause people to want to buy his coin. And that dynamic could easily last for the entire four-year term. Story Continues Furthermore, much like Dogecoin, there are TRUMP ETFs that are currently under consideration for approval by regulators. Should they get approved, it’ll be easier for investors with traditional financial accounts to pile in without needing to mess with any cryptocurrency software or applications. But none of these drivers can make this coin into a good investment, only one that’s less bad than other meme coins. Still, in comparison to Dogecoin, the official Trump coin actually has a serious impediment: It’s inherently political. Regardless of their political opinions, the mere whiff of an enduring threat from politics will keep away at least some potential investors, even if it’ll attract others. Thus there is likely a lower ceiling on the coin’s total accessible value within the cryptocurrency sector. Then there’s the inescapable risk that some of the president’s actions could detrimentally influence the price of the coin, which can’t be ruled out if one admits that other actions could be beneficial, which is a core part of the investment thesis for the coin. So, between Dogecoin and Trump’s official coin, Dogecoin is the better option. It has an established pattern of price action, and it isn’t as vulnerable to political risks despite being exposed to political catalysts in the form of potential future ETF approvals. But, as mentioned previously, you shouldn’t be spending your hard-earned dollars on speculating on these memes if there are safer investments out there that you haven’t touched yet. 13. Your Monthly Work Horoscope for February 2025 Your Monthly Work Horoscope for February 2025 Your Monthly Work Horoscope for February 2025. Discover your Monthly Work Horoscope for each zodiac sign here. Aries February is quiet on the work front, which is much needed after January’s transits. This month, you will be focusing more on how you assert yourself when Venus aligns with your sun on February 4 and get paid the income that you deserve. That will prove extra important during the Leo full moon on the twelfth. Be sure to stand up for yourself and demand that you are respected at work. You might even receive praise from your boss for all of your hard efforts and dedication. The caveat is that your colleagues might get a tad jealous of your success when the sun shifts into Pisces on February 18. It’s important to set boundaries with your coworkers to ensure that none of you overstep at this time. All will be forgiven when Mars turns direct on the twenty-third. You will be able to decipher who is your trusted colleague and who is not. Chances are you’ll be cutting the **** on a lot of people on your team who aren’t doing their due diligence and holding their weight on projects. Your input is important. Be open and honest with upper management as to who you feel should stay, go, and be transferred to another team or department. Your feedback on such matters is pivotal. Pay attention to what transcends. Taurus February ends with major work news for you. The caveat is that it might not come your way until Mars ends its retrograde journey on February 23. The entrance of Venus to the sign of Aries and the spiritual sector of your chart on the third will bring new hope and invention to your emotions, giving you the chance to start fresh and find ingenuity in all relationships that you’re invested in. This might require you to stand up against upper management or your boss and push through all the red tape involved in implementing your professional visions into reality. No one knows more than you that change is hard, but it’s necessary. It’s time you bring your workplace into the future. Your creativity can help inspire everyone to step up their professional game and elevate their brand. Just be sure to keep a notebook handy all month to write down your novel ideas before you forget them. Also, don’t share with your coworkers as they might try to usurp your visions and pass them off as their own when Neptune links up with the North Node on February 6. Gemini It’s been hard finding your professional footing. While the first half of February doesn’t exactly give you clear direction as to how you should move forward in career matters, it gives you incentive as to what you want to manifest. This energy will be especially potent when Neptune aligns with the North Node on February 6. Things won’t really gain stamina until the sun enters Pisces on the eighteenth, putting you in the limelight when it comes to your career endeavors. When Mars ends its retrograde journey on February 23, you can expect to see the professional seeds you planted during last month’s Aquarius new moon come to fruition and start to bloom. The new moon in Pisces, which occurs on the twenty-seventh, will make you rethink the future, as you aren’t wanting to take the lead anymore, or at least for the time being, on professional projects and focus on your personal life. After all, you do the work of two people (as you are the sign of the Twins). Therefore, taking a break from working hard is much needed at this time. Think of taking time off from work as your winter staycation. ******* It’s time to boss up, *******! This means not settling for anything less than what you deserve when it comes to your career and salary. The full moon on February 12 urges you to ask for a raise at work. The caveat is that you might not receive it until the new moon in Pisces on the twenty-seventh is pushing you to assert yourself to your boss or upper management regarding such matters. Think before you make a scene, as your words can be taken out of context due to the Mars retrograde ending in your sign on February 23, which can lead to unnecessary power struggles, all of which can be easily avoided if you are sincere, kind, and direct with your case. You might get your way, as the energy gives you the pristine opportunity to restart and refresh your campaign for financial success in your professional endeavors. This is the second part and conclusion of the story that started on the fifth, when you first asked for a raise or promotion at work. Leo Regardless of whether you are currently working from home or physically in the office, you will be extremely busy making contacts for your current work situation and future. The full moon on February 12 will help you meet new people that might benefit your professional future. They might even be former colleagues who are able to extend a helping hand in elevating your career. Be aware of their true intentions and faulty contracts at this time, as they might have ulterior motives (most of which you are unaware of at the moment). Don’t worry. All will come to light when Mars ends its planetary moonwalk on the twenty-third. Another time to watch out for is the sun’s ingress into Pisces on February 18. This will make financial matters a bit confusing. Seek guidance before agreeing to a price on a freelance gig or a raise at work. No one knows more than you not to settle for less than you are worth, and this is the time for you to demand more. Speak up freely and without hesitation. It’s your life, and you need to ensure that you are receiving the fair end of the deal. You should be on an equal playing field financially as the members on your team and your other colleagues. Prepare yourself to take on each month with your personalized Monthly Horoscope! Virgo The month starts with major drama with your coworkers, all of which will reach a boiling point when Neptune connects with the North Node on February 6. You’ll be given the choice as to how you’ll want to proceed. While taking the high road seems ethical and fair, you’ll be pushed to test the waters by taking the shady road. Don’t flirt with being unscrupulous, Virgo. You’re better than that! And, to be honest, you know this. Be sure that you are well aware of every outcome before you begin to move into uncharted waters that will create professional issues for you in the future. This means no tattling on your colleagues, even if it feels well deserving. The sun’s ingress into Pisces on the eighteenth is allowing you to see your coworkers as your equals, making you regret and change your opinion from earlier in the month. You’ll be more inclined to make amends through HR and find your balance to move forward with the coworkers you had arguments with during the first two weeks of February. The new moon on February 27 is a sublime time to let bygones be bygones and start anew, as long as you all can leave the past behind you. Libra All of the Aquarius energy in the beginning of February will inspire you to take great creative leaps. The key is to insert these talents into your professional aspirations. Doing this will help you expand your horizons. You’ll be cosmically pushed to make strides toward using your talents to expand your wallet. Starting a retail page to sell your art will prove to be beneficial, as you will make a ton of money, so much so that you will want to keep this going as a side hustle (or even your main gig). The caveat is to not be super boastful, as your colleagues at your nine-to-five might be jealous of your success when Venus enters Aries on February 3. Ignore their comments or eye rolls when talking about your art in a meeting. To be real, you totally do not need their approval. The only approval you need is from yourself. You got it all, and now the whole wide world will know of your artistic talents. The full moon on the twelfth opens your eyes to all the talk going on behind your back at work. But it also serves to clear up the drama and lies that are being spread about you at the office. Scorpio Your focus isn’t so much on work in the beginning of February as it is on personal matters and love. Family matters might take you away from giving your career a lot of energy because your brood needs you more than ever in the beginning of this month. The key to keeping up with work is to make sure that all of your contracts and agreements are in place, as there might be a lot of backtracking on them from the people you are trying to reach an agreement with. You might even walk away with a profitable agreement as a new alliance will be formed as a result of all the professional chaos that unfolds in the beginning of February. The sun’s movement into Pisces on February 18 gives you more power to swim forward with ease. Ironically enough, the Pisces new moon on the twenty-seventh grounds your energies and calms professional matters as March begins. Sagittarius This is a wonderful month for you to experience tremendous healing and business changes (if you’re open to it). Your outlook will take on a new level of awareness and can shift the focus toward your personal needs, including starting something more tangible for yourself. There is a great deal of autonomy being asked of you now. Whether or not you own a business or you are generally working for yourself, after Jupiter’s planetary moonwalk that ends on February 4, open your mind to something out of the norm. You’ll be surprised how much you can inspire yourself to make professional moves when the sun enters Pisces on the eighteenth. This will take you into the last weeks of the month on a high. You’ll be able to elevate your personal brand and take part in exciting new projects. The only caveat is that you might feel unsure of what professional road to take on February 27, when the new moon heightens your insecurities and creates uncertainty in your professional world. Be careful not to make any impetuous moves at the moment, as you might second-guess yourself, which will bring a few long-term professional projects to a sudden end. Capricorn There is literally no more hiding with all of the transits directly affecting your finances this month. It is all about getting the gist of the lesson and knowing that you have to take steps toward major change in general regarding investments. Your financial and business prosperity is counting on your ability to step out into the world and let your voice be heard. You have very strong opinions, and you cannot hide what you are thinking under these skies. The spotlight is directly aligned with you right now, especially as the new moon in Pisces on February 27 makes you more confident. Don’t make rash decisions regarding your finances, as you might later regret these impulsive investments. You could win at the stock market and be down a few weeks later (a sentiment felt especially hard during the full moon in Leo on the twelfth). You are the caterpillar turning into the butterfly right now, so it is time to spread your wings and take command. Strong alignments with the Pisces sun on February 18 and the new moon on February 27 will push you into leadership roles throughout these transits. It is up to you to decide where you direct your energy, but either way, there is no turning back from these tests of time. Aquarius Welcome to a brand-new month of surprises, Aquarius! This month brings you incredible news right off the bat as the full moon brings in new partnerships on February 12. This lovely energy is accentuated by the new moon on the twenty-seventh that brings you a whole lot of prosperity and luck. You’ll be forced to review and revisit an older professional vision that’s been lingering on your mind for some time. Talk about it with your team, management, and colleagues. After all, two or three heads are better than one. You will be commended for your teamwork as you head into Pisces season on February 18, which might even lead to applause from your coworkers or a raise from your boss. When Mars ends its post planetary retrograde on the twenty-third, you will be able to take all that you have reenvisioned and reinvigorate it at work. This time around you will prove to be successful in the projects and make major professional strides. The new moon on February 27 will bring you more financial stability and allow you to make money off of your visions. Luck is on your side this month, even if it feels like the odds are stacked against you. Pisces You’re in the midst of a very enlightening retrograde cycle in the house of your secret dreams. If you are looking for a new job or business proposition, now is the time for your courageous sign to strike. Taking offers that come in that seem unconventional seem to be the best way to direct your energy. This holds true especially as Neptune and the North Node connect on February 6, as well as the new moon forms a brilliant connection to your sun on February 27, right after Venus lights up the financial sector of your chart on February 3. You definitely need to heed caution and keep it moving! Trusting your instincts is the name of the game, and if there is any sign meant to divert from the beaten path, that is most definitely you. A financial transaction can benefit you, as your drive for success will be like none other this month and will open many doors. This will take you back to the visions you began to implement and manifest last year. Now it’s time to let these major decisions transpire and take you up a whole other level along your career path. 15. 3 Things To Do To Avoid Relying on Social Security in Retirement 3 Things To Do To Avoid Relying on Social Security in Retirement Rob Latour / Shutterstock / Rob Latour / Shutterstock Retirement: the beautiful time of life when you no longer have to work for your money. Instead, your money works for you. And if you’re already well on your way to retirement, congratulations. Read More: 8 Common Mistakes Retirees Make With Their Social Security Checks Find Out: 4 Unusual Ways To Make Extra Money That Actually Work Today, more Americans are retiring than ever before. According to the Alliance for Lifetime Income (ALI), 2024 marked the start of the “Peak 65 Zone:” the largest surge of retirement-age Americans turning 65 in U.S. history. Over 4.1 million Americans will turn 65 each year through 2027 — that’s more than 11,200 every day. However, if you’re planning to retire soon, you don’t want to make any financial mistakes. Here are three things to do to avoid relying on Social Security in retirement, according to motivational speaker and financial expert Tony Robbins. Robbins explains that Social Security was never designed to fully replace retirement savings. In today’s world, this is certainly the case as the increased average life expectancy continues to lead to longer retirements. If your employer offers a 401(k) match, you must elect for it. For example, if you’re offered a 5% dollar-for-dollar match on your 401(k) contributions and you contribute 5% of your earnings, you’ll be making a 10% annual contribution. An employer match is essentially free money, so don’t leave it on the table. Additionally, investing in an individual retirement account (IRA), perhaps in addition to your employer-sponsored 401(k) plan, can provide additional retirement savings. Discover Next: Need to Cut Expenses While on Social Security? Here’s the First Thing to Get Rid Of One of the best things about turning 65? You become eligible to enroll in Medicare. However, Medicare doesn’t cover all healthcare expenses. This included expensive long-term care, which you’ll need to find separate insurance for if you want to avoid high monthly costs later in life. Additionally, Medicare involves monthly premiums, deductibles, and prescription drug costs. In other words, expect to have additional medical expenses in retirement even though you enroll in Medicare. Robbins says that with the right mindset, you can become a “master of money.” From his point of view, he believes that 80% of wealth is psychological while the other 20% is the mechanics of managing it. “Money has no power by itself, only the power you give it,” his website states. “That’s why mindset — your ability to focus and the state you put yourself in — is the ultimate power.” Story Continues Source link #Avoid #Relying #Social #Security #Retirement Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  17. Melbourne United come from behind to defeat JackJumpers Melbourne United come from behind to defeat JackJumpers Melbourne United have come from 16 points down to defeat the Tasmania JackJumpers 94-92 in a thrilling re-match of last season’s NBL grand final. United’s hold on second spot looked shaky when they trailed 61-45 with a minute remaining in the first half of Saturday night’s match at John Cain Arena. A hot run either side of half-time and a 12-0 run to start the final term catapulted Melbourne into the lead. But in a thrilling finish, a miss each at the stripe from Shea Ili and Tanner Krebs in the last 10 seconds left the door ajar for Tasmania to snatch victory or send the match into overtime. With seven seconds remaining and United clinging to a two-point lead, star JackJumpers guard Jordon Crawford raced the ball down the court for one final hurrah, only to lose control as he looked set to drive to the rim. The result means Tasmania (12-16), who have lost six consecutive matches, need a mini miracle in order to finish sixth and secure a play-in berth. For United, they are 18-10 and in the box seat to lock down second spot with just one game (against South East Melbourne) to come. Ili finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists in a star display for Melbourne. But it was Kyle Bowen’s contribution of 15 points and eight rebounds, including four offensive boards, that really caught the eye. With Jack White on limited minutes due to a back injury, Bowen made the most of his extended stay on the court to help get Melbourne back into the contest. Crawford top scored for Tasmania with 20 points, while Milton Doyle finished with 19. Melbourne committed six turnovers to one in an error-riddle opening term as the JackJumpers headed into quarter-time with a shock 32-21 lead. Play was stopped for a minute during the opening quarter when referee Marc Mill was forced off after appearing to snap his Achilles tendon. United coach Dean Vickerman challenged his team to hold Tasmania to just 18 points in the second term, but the visitors had other ideas. Alarm bells were ringing for the home side when two triples from Doyle, including a brilliant catch-and-pass shot with one minute remaining in the half, extended the margin to 16 points. But Chris Goulding’s three-pointer on the buzzer – which came just after Ili’s own long-range bomb – reduced the damage greatly, with Melbourne entering the long break down 61-51 instead of 61-45. Cheered on by a bustling home crowd, Melbourne continued to make inroads early in the third quarter. But it was the last term – which Melbourne opened with 12 consecutive points – that really turned the contest on its head. Tasmania scored just 15 points in the final term, with the poor finish to the match all but ending their title defence. 18. Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at U.S. agency: Reuters Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at U.S. agency: Reuters Elon Musk arrives for the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Jan. 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. Kenny Holston | Getty Images Aides to Elon Musk charged with running the U.S. government human resources agency have locked career civil servants out of computer systems that contain the personal data of millions of federal employees, according to two agency officials. Since taking office 11 days ago, President Donald Trump has embarked on a massive government makeover, firing and sidelining hundreds of civil servants in his first steps toward downsizing the bureaucracy and installing more loyalists. Musk, the billionaire Tesla and X owner tasked by Trump to slash the size of the 2.2 million-strong civilian government workforce, has moved swiftly to install allies at the agency known as the Office of Personnel Management. The two officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, said some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to some of the department’s data systems. The systems include a vast database called Enterprise Human Resources Integration, which contains dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades and length of service of government workers, the officials said. “We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems,” one of the officials said. “That is creating great concern. There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications.” Officials affected by the move can still log on and access functions such as email but can no longer see the massive datasets that cover every facet of the federal workforce. Musk, OPM, representatives of the new team, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. OPM has sent out memos that eschew the normal dry wording of government missives as it encourages civil servants to consider buyout offers to quit and take a vacation to a “dream destination.” Don Moynihan, a professor at the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, said the actions inside OPM raised concerns about congressional oversight at the agency and how Trump and Musk view the federal bureaucracy. “This makes it much harder for anyone outside Musk’s inner circle at OPM to know what’s going on,” Moynihan said. Musk influence A team including current and former employees of Musk assumed command of OPM on Jan. 20, the day Trump took office. They have moved sofa beds onto the fifth floor of the agency’s headquarters, which contains the director’s office and can only be accessed with a security badge or a security *******, one of the OPM employees said. The sofa beds have been installed so the team can work around the clock, the employee said. Musk, a major donor to a famously demanding boss, installed beds at X for employees to enable them to work longer when in 2022 he took over the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. “It feels like a hostile takeover,” the employee said. The new appointees in charge of OPM have moved the agency’s chief management officer, Katie Malague, out of her office and to a new office on a different floor, the officials said. Malague did not respond to a request for comment. The moves by Musk’s aides at OPM, and upheaval inside the Treasury building caused by other Musk aides that was reported on Friday, underscore the sweeping influence Musk is having across government. David Lebryk, the top-ranking career U.S. Treasury Department official, is set to leave his post following a clash with allies of Musk after they asked for access to payment systems, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The new team at OPM includes software engineers and Brian Bjelde, who joined Musk’s SpaceX venture in 2003 as an avionics engineer before rising to become the company’s vice president of human resources. Bjelde’s role at OPM is that of a senior adviser. The acting head of OPM, Charles Ezell, has been sending memos to the entire government workforce since Trump took office, including Tuesday’s offering federal employees the chance to quit with eight months pay. “No-one here knew that the memos were coming out. We are finding out about these memos the same time as the rest of the world,” one of the officials said. Among the group that now runs OPM is Amanda Scales, a former Musk employee, who is now OPM’s chief of staff. In some memos sent out on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 by Ezell, including one directing agencies to identify federal workers on probationary periods, agency heads were asked to email Scales at her OPM email address. Another senior adviser is Riccardo Biasini, a former engineer at Tesla and most recently a director at The Boring Company, Musk’s tunnel-building operation in Las Vegas. The event was just one eruption centralized in a newly found hotspot region of Io estimated to be larger than Lake Superior on Earth. The currently unnamed region is so powerful that the energy it belts out is equivalent to six times the energy produced by all of Earth’s power plants combined. The team behind these findings used data collected by Juno, which made flybys of Io in Dec. 2023 and Feb. 2024 and came to within about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) of the Jovian moon’s surface. In particular, the large volcanic hotspot was observed when Juno made its latest Io flyby on Dec 27, 2024, coming to within 46,200 miles (74,400 kilometers) of Io’s surface and targeting the moon’s southern hemisphere with its infrared instrument. “Juno had two really close flybys of Io during Juno’s extended mission,” the mission’s principal investigator, Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute, said in a statement. “And while each flyby provided data on the tormented moon that exceeded our expectations, the data from this latest — and more distant — flyby really blew our minds. “This is the most powerful volcanic event ever recorded on the most volcanic world in our solar system — so that’s really saying something.” How Jupiter torments Io The reason Io is so volcanic is in large part due to its parent planet, Jupiter, the solar system’s largest world. As Io orbits the gas giant planet once every 42.5 hours, the immense gravity of Jupiter generates powerful tidal forces with the Jovian moon. This squashes and squeezes Io, causing friction-related heating in the moon’s interior. As a result, molten lava erupts onto the surface of Io via the 400 or so volcanoes that the moon is covered with. This lava brings along plumes of gas and ash that fill the atmosphere of Io. Furthermore, with eruptions of lava comes blistering heat, which Juno can see from space as infrared light using its Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument. JIRAM allows scientists to gather data from the “weather layer” of Io around 30 to 45 miles (50 to 70 kilometers) below the cloud tops of the Jovian moon’s southern hemisphere. Images of Io captured in 2024 by the JunoCam imager aboard NASA’s Juno show significant and visible surface changes (indicated by the arrows) near the Jovian moon’s south pole. | Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS Image processing by Jason Perry This led to the discovery of a hitherto unknown region of Io that’s subject to extreme volcanism across 40,000 square miles (100,00 square kilometers). “JIRAM detected an event of extreme infrared radiance — a massive hot spot — in Io’s southern hemisphere so strong that it saturated our detector,” Alessandro Mura, a Juno mission investigator from the National Institute for Astrophysics in Rome, said in the statement. “However, we have evidence what we detected is actually a few closely spaced hot spots that emitted at the same time, suggestive of a subsurface vast magma chamber system. “The data supports that this is the most intense volcanic eruption ever recorded on Io.” A massive hotspot — larger the Earth’s Lake Superior — can be seen just to the right of Io’s south pole in this annotated image taken by the JIRAM infrared imager aboard NASA’s Juno on Dec. 27, 2024, during the spacecraft’s flyby of the Jovian moon. | Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/ASI/INAF/JIRAM Juno didn’t just capture this turbulent region in infrared, either. The spacecraft’s JunoCam visible light instrument also pictured the region. This allowed the team to compare what the region looked like in this latest flyby to how it appeared in images captured in two previous trips past Io. They found changes in surface coloring around the region that are associated with volcanic activity and developing hot spots. That will allow the team to see what kind of landscape changes have developed in the region. Eruptions of size and ferocity are associated with a variety of long-term characteristics. Other massive eruptions on Io have left in their wake fingerprints like rock fragments spewed out by volcanoes, small lava flows from fissures and volcanic- deposits rich in sulfur and sulfur dioxide. “While it is always great to witness events that rewrite the record books, this new hot spot can potentially do much more,” said Bolton. “The intriguing feature could improve our understanding of volcanism not only on Io but on other worlds as well.” Source link #NASAs #Juno #spacecraft #watches #powerful #volcanic #event #Jupiters #moon Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency, sources say Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency, sources say Elon Musk arrives for the inauguration of U.S. Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and X owner tasked by Trump to slash the size of the 2.2 million-strong civilian government workforce, has moved swiftly to install allies at the agency known as the Office of Personnel Management. Sarah Silbiger | The Washington Post | Getty Images “We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems,” one of the officials said. 25. Alana King five-for completes Ashes whitewash as Australia crush England Alana King five-for completes Ashes whitewash as Australia crush England Australia have crushed England by an innings and 122 runs in the first women’s Test at MCG in 76 years, securing a historic Ashes whitewash. Led by towering centuries from Annabel Sutherland (163) and Beth Mooney (106), as well as Alana King (4-45 and 5-53) and Ashleigh Gardner’s (1-30 and 4-38) spin dominance, Australia completely embarrassed their rivals in the pink-ball Test. England were, at times, competitive in the white-ball games, despite losing the ODI and T20 series 3-0 each. But after capitulating in the final T20 in Adelaide, England carried that form to Melbourne where they were annihilated in ruthless fashion, bowled out for 170 and 148, by all-conquering Australia to end a disastrous tour 0-7. Australia completed the first 16-0 points whitewash since the multi-format series was introduced for the women’s Ashes in 2013. Even when the women’s Ashes didn’t include ODIs and T20s, neither Australia nor England ever managed a clean-sweep in a series of three or more matches. England, the world’s No.2-ranked country in ODIs and T20s, have not won a game in Australia since 2017-18 after two no results and a draw made up the last series in 2021-22. Australia torched their opponents, even with star veteran Ellyse Perry sidelined for most of the Test with a hip injury. Sutherland confirmed herself as *********** cricket’s next superstar by hitting a record-equalling third Test century. She was promoted to No.3 in place of Perry, becoming the first woman to make a Test century on the MCG. Mooney joined Sutherland on the MCG honour board less than 24 hours later, posting her first Test hundred. The 31-year-old was left stranded on 98 not out at stumps on Friday night, but after five nervous ****** to start day three, she reached her milestone. King and Gardner combined for nine of the second-innings wickets, bowling in tandem for 48 overs unchanged to end the match. King weaved her magic in front of the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG, breaking England’s mini resistance from veteran opener Tammy Beaumont (47) and captain Heather Knight (32). England lost 8-38 to finish the match after they were a respectable 2-100. King’s dismissal of Sophia Dunkley was a classic legspinner’s wicket, sharply turning from leg stump to ****** into off stump. Speaking after play on day one, King hoped the late Warne would have enjoyed legspin bowling again being on show in a Test at MCG. There is no doubt the legendary spin king would have loved her wicket of Dunkley. Mooney is just the fourth woman to post a ton in Tests, ODIs and T20s, after England pair Knight and Beaumont, and South Africa star Laura Wolvaardt. The left-hander has scored three ODI centuries and two in T20s. Spinner Sophie Ecclestone (5-143) claimed three of the five *********** wickets to fall on Saturday, putting a nightmare day two behind her. Quicks Lauren Filer and Lauren Bell each finished with two wickets.
