  2. There are ‘no victims’ in Xbox’s multiplatform era, says former PlayStation exec There are ‘no victims’ in Xbox’s multiplatform era, says former PlayStation exec Former PlayStation executive Adam Boyes has praised Microsoft’s “agile” gaming strategy and claimed that there are ‘no victims’ in Xbox’s multiplatform era. Boyes – known by many for PlayStation’s infamous ‘how to share games’ PS4 video – was PlayStation’s vice president of third-party relations between 2012 and 2016. More recently, he was co-CEO of Iron Galaxy, and he recently founded consultancy firm Vivrato. Speaking in an interview with Gamertag Radio, Boyes was asked for his opinion on Microsoft’s increased focus on multiplatform releases. Multiple former Xbox exclusives have recently been announced for PS5, most recently Forza Horizon 5, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and boss Phil Spencer has said there are “no red lines” for what could come next. Not everyone has reacted positively to the news, however, with some notable Xbox influencers even having publicly withdrawn support for the platform. “I understand why people have feelings about it and opinions, because their idea is the identity of me choosing a brand and being beholden to that brand is unilateral, and therefore that should be the one source of all content,” Boyes said. “But I do think if we think of it in the analogy of, they were Blockbuster that became Netflix, and what I mean by that is when they began, it was about the physical unit being the entertainment experience in the living room, and that was a plastic player that your put discs in and it plays it, so you need to serve people with the physicality of it. He added: “Retail and partnerships are important. You and I have both waited in many lines, and many early morning openings, to rush in there and sprint against everyone else – and I usually lost the race, by the way – to get that console as fast as we possibly could. And it’s just different now.” The former PlayStation VP said that Xbox is now “an entertainment provider” and not “just a disc producer and disc distributor”. “So if we think about that, the analogy that maybe PlayStation is HBO, Microsoft is Netflix, and Nintendo is Disney, then their job is to get incredibly interactive and engaging entertainment out to as many people as possible.” He added: “I understand why traditionalists are looking at that being like, ‘I don’t like change! I want it to only be where I want it to be!’ And that’s the bit where my logic gap starts to break. “Because when Phil [Spencer] and his team are putting amazing content on more platforms, who’s the victim? I ask a lot of people, ‘who’s the victim?’ And there aren’t any, except for people who are like, ‘I only want it where I bought it, and that’s what I expect!’” Boyes said he “applauds [Xbox] for being agile enough in a changing and transitioning market to expand”, but agreed that that Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy presents challenges when it comes to the value proposition of its future consoles. “You’re absolutely right that when we’re trying to sell people the new version [of a console]… is it 8k, is it 16k, is it 32k? Where are we going from here? Right now, I’m happy with the number of Ks and the fidelity – it’s great. Then the value proposition changes.” In another recent Gamertag Radio interview, Spencer discussed where Xbox console hardware fits within its new, more open approach to multiplatform game development. Fallout: New Vegas Lead Writer Returns to Obsidian, But Says Its Not For New Vegas 2 Fallout: New Vegas Lead Writer Returns to Obsidian, But Says Its Not For New Vegas 2 · · February 1, 2025 Fallout New Vegas and Horizon Zero Dawn lead writer John Gonzalez has announced he will be retuning to Obsidian after 14 years. The announcement came via his LinkedIn profile, where he was quick to shoot down impending rumours of Fallout New Vegas 2, by simply saying, “No, it’s not Fallout: New Vegas 2.” As for what Gonzalez is working on remains to be seen and could ride on the success of the studios next two upcoming games, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. If tremendously successful, he could be working on a future sequel. However, Obsidian Entertainment has also released some stellar games in the past few years, including Pentiment, Pillars of Eternity, and Grounded, so he could also be working on a sequel to those, or a new IP entirely. But for now, all we know if that he’s not working on New Vegas 2… Apparently. What do you think Gonzalez is working on? Would you like to see a Fallout: New Vegas 2? 16. Elon Musk Finally Admits That Teslas Don’t Have What It Takes for Full Self-Driving Elon Musk Finally Admits That Teslas Don’t Have What It Takes for Full Self-Driving After repeatedly insisting for over a decade that Tesla was on the verge of legitimate full self-driving (FSD) — and selling cars with pricey computing hardware, based on the promise that they’d increase in value once the feature became reality — CEO Elon Musk has finally admitted that it’s not happening with the vehicles’ current hardware. During the electric carmaker’s latest quarterly earnings call, Musk gave investors the “absolutely painful and difficult” concession. “The truth is that we’re gonna have to upgrade people’s Hardware 3 [computers] for those who have bought Full Self Driving,” the brash billionaire said, “and that is the honest answer.” “I’m kind of glad,” he mused, “that not that many people bought the FSD package” — which, let’s not forget, he spent years exhorting them to purchase. As The Verge notes, Musk issued this revelation while interrupting Tesla’s Autopilot and AI czar Ashok Elluswamy, essentially contradicting his own executive while he tried to tell investors that the company had not given up on its HW3. Elluswamy, to his credit, handled the interruption diplomatically by teasing that Tesla will be releasing a “baby” version of FSD while its engineers work on the latest version of the self-driving feature for cars equipped with the newer Hardware 4 computers. The admission follows previous musings by Musk, during another quarterly earnings call last year, in which he appeared to realize that HW3 doesn’t have the juice. “There is some chance,” the CEO said during Tesla’s Q3 2024 earnings call last October, “that HW3 does not achieve the safety level that allows for unsupervised FSD.” “H4 has several times the capability of HW3,” he continued. “It’s easier to get things to work on HW4 and it takes a lot of effort to squeeze that into HW3.” Back in 2018, the company began giving away “free” HW3 upgrades to people who bought FSD software for their Teslas. On this latest call, Musk reiterated a similar offer to FSD purchasers to upgrade them to HW4, Teslerati reports, though he didn’t give a timeline for when that might happen. Despite that promise, these latest missives from Musk’s galaxy brain coming after more than a decade of kicking the can are beyond the pale, even for him. 18. 3 Dates for Disney Stock Investors to Circle in February 3 Dates for Disney Stock Investors to Circle in February It’s now been more than two months since Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) shares have been trading consistently in the triple figures. Making sure it stays above $100 — and building on its market-matching 24% gain in 2024 — will depend on its ability to continue delivering across its media empire. February may be the shortest month of the year, but it doesn’t mean that this will be 28 days that investors can spend tapping the snooze bar. Disney has a big earnings report on the way in the week ahead. It also has another huge movie coming out and a promising new piece of animated content coming to Disney+. There’s never a dull month when it comes to Disney. Let’s take a closer look at February’s potentially needle-moving events. Disney’s fiscal year ends in September. Most stocks have been posting their fourth-quarter numbers this earnings season, but for Disney, it will report its fiscal first-quarter results on Wednesday. The market isn’t expecting much in terms of revenue growth at Disney. Analysts are bracing for a modest 4% step-up on the top line. The year-over-year comparisons for its media networks and theme parks should prove challenging. Wall Street pros have also been paring back their expectations from the 5% increase that they were modeling a month ago. Image source: Disney. It should be a different story on the bottom line. Analysts now see the House of Mouse clocking in with an adjusted profit of $1.44 a share, an 18% jump from the $1.22 a share it earned a year earlier for the same fiscal quarter. The market is still all over the place. Analysts are forecasting a first-quarter profit per share as low as $1.14 and as high as $1.58. If it’s any consolation, Disney has surpassed Wall Street profit targets consistently over the past year. It’s not just the numbers that will move the shares. Disney may update investors on new content releases, including moving movies and TV shows, earlier or later on its calendar. Investors will want to see if Disney is making progress at its theme parks, where growth has stalled in recent reports. There isn’t likely any news on the eventual success to CEO Bob Iger. Disney’s board expects to announce its next leader in early 2026 before Iger steps down near the end of that year. Even if there is no major news announced in Disney’s report and subsequent earnings call, it’s going to be the biggest February event for investors to monitor. It’s fitting that Disney chose Valentine’s Day as the release date of its next Marvel theatrical release. Captain America: Brave New World will hit a multiplex near you on Feb. 14. Moviegoers fell in love with Disney last year. The media giant scored the world’s three highest-grossing films that came out during the 2024 calendar year: Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2. Story Continues It’s been nine years since the last stand-alone Captain American movie came out. Just like last year, Disney had the three top box office draws in 2016. Captain America: Civil War was one of the three big Disney-produced flicks that year. Disney’s Marvel then shifted gears to telling the larger collective of Avengers stories. The storyline shifts to a new Captain America, but fans of the franchise should continue to flock to theaters to see the latest chapter in the saga play out on the largest screen possible. It’s the first of several potential blockbusters that Disney will be putting out this year. Now that Disney+ is profitable, the power of scalability starts to take the wheel. It can’t afford to skimp on new content to retain subscribers, even with its top rival recently hiking its subscription prices. Pixar fans are looking forward to Win or Lose later this month. It will be the first original long-form animation series put out by the computer animation studio that’s been turning heads and drawing audiences since 1995’s Toy Story redefined the genre. This won’t be Pixar’s first foray into a long-form animation show. In December, it introduced Dream Productions, based on the Inside Out franchise. The new show doesn’t have the same benefit of an established audience, but it’s Pixar. It rarely misses when it takes a swing. Win or Lose is about a co-ed middle school softball team looking to win the league’s championship. In an interesting twist that feeds nicely into the episodic nature of the series, every installment will feature the off-the-field life of a single player, parent, and even the umpire. 21. I’m a pilot who’s flown into DC’s Reagan Airport for decades. Taking off and landing there can be extremely tough — here’s what I think went wrong. I’m a pilot who’s flown into DC’s Reagan Airport for decades. Taking off and landing there can be extremely tough — here’s what I think went wrong. A passenger jet collided with a ****** Hawk helicopter near Reagan Airport on Wednesday, January 29. The collision may have occurred due to limited visibility and night vision goggle use, says former pilot Mark Stephens. He reminds nervous passengers that flying in an airplane is still safer statistically than a car. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Mark Stephens, a 68-year-old retired Delta Air Lines pilot who completed his career as an Airbus A350 captain in November 2021. It has been edited for length and clarity. I was a Delta pilot for 30 years, and I landed at Reagan Washington National Airport many times throughout my career. There are two airports on the East Coast that I consider particularly dangerous: LaGuardia and Reagan. Due to heavy air traffic, both airports handle takeoffs and landings on intersecting runways at very high speeds. It’s incredibly close quarters. One suggestion I have for safety is to limit the size of the planes flying in. The American Airlines flight was small — around 60 seats — which is much harder to see than a larger plane like an Airbus A320. They could require the airplanes flying in to be ******* and have fewer of them, but that’s unlikely because it would reduce the number of places airlines can fly. Here’s what I think may have happened at DCA What might’ve happened on January 29 when a passenger jet collided with a ****** Hawk helicopter near Reagan is that neither of the aircraft saw the other. In a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) situation, a set of regulations governing how pilots should operate in clear weather conditions, the ****** Hawk could be as close as a few hundred feet to commercial planes. The air traffic controller would’ve pointed out the passenger airplane to the helicopter, whose pilot would’ve said, “Roger, we’ll maintain visual separation.” At close range, the pilot in the helicopter with night vision goggles may not see the other plane because the goggles narrow your field. Also, at night, depth perception and your peripherals are reduced. I don’t think the helicopter pilot ever saw the airplane they hit. Another possibility is that the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is not fully effective below 700 feet, the approximate altitude of the ****** TCAS is a vital tool, and it saved me once. It warns pilots of possible collisions and gives automated instructions to prevent crashes. One time, I was flying a Delta commercial plane out of Atlanta at 16,000 feet, and another plane, flown by a civilian pilot, was approaching. I was flying this departure on course, at altitude, and we got a TCAS alert. The other pilot was descending in altitude. I’d seen him above me earlier but could no longer see him. The VSI, or vertical speed indicator, gives you a little green range where you need to get the airplane down to avoid hitting the other plane. Right at the last minute, my TCAS instructed me to descend 2,500 feet a minute. Because he was coming down toward us, we had to go below him. We pushed it aggressively to get the plane flying down 2,500 feet a minute and got to negative G-force, so the flight attendants were in the air until I got back into positive G-force. At that last second, I looked up and saw him go by. We could’ve crashed if the TCAS system hadn’t worked. It saved my life coming out of Atlanta and everyone on that airplane. I don’t think the collision on Wednesday was a TCAS failure, though. TCAS doesn’t provide solutions at low altitudes as aircraft are landing for safety reasons. I retired in November 2021 I hate to say it, but changes in the procedures of airliners and helicopters happen after blood is involved. For example, after September 11, cockpits were locked down with bulletproof doors so hijackers couldn’t commandeer the plane. I expect that after this, the military won’t allow night vision goggles around commercial airports within five miles. For those scared to fly, I used to tell nervous passengers that if they ride in a car, they are so much safer statistically on an airplane because cars kill way more people. 24. OpenAI to release new artificial intelligence model for free | Technology sector OpenAI to release new artificial intelligence model for free | Technology sector OpenAI is releasing a new artificial intelligence model for free, after the company said it would speed up product releases in response to the emergence of a ******** rival. The startup behind ChatGPT is issuing the AI, called o3-mini, after the surprise success of a rival product by China’s DeepSeek. It will be available without charge – albeit with usage limits – to people who use the free version of OpenAI’s chatbot. DeepSeek rattled tech investors in the US with the release of R1, a so-called reasoning model that underpinned the company’s eponymous chatbot. News that it had topped Apple’s free app store and claims it had been developed at a fraction of the cost wiped $1tn off the tech-heavy Nasdaq index on Monday. OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, reacted to DeepSeek’s challenge by pledging to “deliver much better models” and accelerate product releases. He had first announced plans to release o3-mini – a less powerful version of the full o3 model that has yet to be released publicly – on 23 January, days after DeepSeek unveiled R1. “Today’s launch marks the first time we’re bringing reasoning capabilities to our free users, an important step towards broadening accessibility to advanced AI in service of our mission,” said OpenAI. R1, the underlying technology for DeepSeek’s chatbot, not only rivalled its OpenAI equivalent in performance but was also developed with fewer resources, according to DeepSeek. This has made investors ask whether US tech firms will continue their dominance of the AI market and generate a return on the multibillion-dollar sums they have invested in AI infrastructure and products. OpenAI said the o3-mini model matched its predecessor, o1, in maths, coding, and science but at a significantly lower cost and with faster responses. Users on ChatGPT’s Pro package, which costs $200 a month, will get unlimited access to o3-mini, while users on the cheaper Plus tariff will have higher usage limits than free users. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Public comments by Trump, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth could make their cases stronger if families of victims in this week’s ****** move forward, according to partners with New York-based Kreindler & Kreindler. President Donald Trump shakes hands with Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy after Duffy spoke about the mid-air ****** between American Airlines flight 5342 and a military helicopter. “Duffy basically says: We’re not going to run away from it, we’ll own it, and the president has made statements about the Army helicopter pilot who messed up,” said Justin Green a partner at the firm. “It’ll be interesting to see how the government and this administration handles any efforts to resolve this case. It’s within their power to direct claims be paid swiftly.” The apparent acceptance of responsibility is a departure from past lawsuits, where government agencies are ultra-cautious about liability and assigning blame, Green said. The transcripts and social media posts are already “part of the fabric of the case,” and could be introduced as evidence, he said. It wouldn’t be new territory for Trump, whose tweets in 2017 were notably used by the 9th Circuit of Appeals to block the travel ban imposed on majority ******* countries. Earlier this week, a federal judge cited tweets made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt when he issued a restraining order against a pause in federal grants and loans. On Friday, Trump said the Army UH-60 ****** Hawk helicopter that collided with the American Eagle regional passenger jet was to blame for the accident, flying too high. Helicopters flying near Reagan are capped at 200 feet to avoid aircraft. “It was far above the 200 foot limit. That’s not really too complicated to understand, is it???” Trump said in a Truth Social post. At the White House Thursday, Hegseth appeared to say the Defense Department would take responsibility for the ******, “no excuses, we’re going to get to the bottom of this… it never should have happened.” “Tragically, last night, a mistake was made… and there was some sort of an elevation issue we’re investigating at the DOD and Army level,” Hegseth said. Representatives from the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. Lawsuits could target FAA, DOD, American The aviation disaster firm Kreindler also represents victims in the Baltimore Key Bridge collapse and Boeing 737 MAX lawsuits from the ****** of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which killed 157 people in 2019. Green said the families “have full legal rights and almost certainly will make recoveries in settlements or at trial” against the Federal Aviation Administration for alleged negligence by air traffic controllers and the Department of Defense for any negligence by pilots of the helicopter. “The two areas that are most ripe for potential accidents in our aviation safety system are the training and qualifications of the flight crew, which was the focus in Buffalo, and now, air traffic control similarly being undermanned and overcast,” said Dan Rose, another Kreindler partner. “Everybody knew for two decades a ground incursion or midair collision was the most likely soft spot and nothing was done. I expect changes will be made as a result.” To seek damages from the federal government, litigants must file a notice of claim under the Federal Tort Claims Act. Then they’d have to wait to see if the government declines the claim, or wait six months to file the official lawsuit. It would then be decided by a judge, rather than a jury. “It’s premature, but we know each family has very substantial claims, the law looks at the economic damages as in the loss for the survivors and their support, the mortgage can’t get paid and kids can’t go to college,” Green said. “Then more importantly, the non-economic side: The emotional harm, and the suffering of their survivors. Each case is litigated individually.” Attorneys will also examine options to sue American Airlines and its subsidiary PSA Airlines if they identify any suspected negligence by their pilots. And they’ll probe the onboard traffic alerting equipment to ensure they were functional and up to design standards. D.C. lawsuits won’t wait for NTSB conclusions Investigators for the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday their preliminary investigation into the ****** will take a month and a final report would not be complete for a year or more. But that won’t stop civil litigation either against American Airlines and its subsidiaries or the federal government. Attorneys will instead rely on publicly available flight recorder data, media reports and likely hire their own forensic researchers to build a case. Final NTSB “probable cause” conclusions generally aren’t admissible in court, but the facts the board gathers to come to those conclusions are admissible, said Jason Matzus of Matzus Law in Pittsburgh. J. Todd Inman, member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), speaks with members of the media at Reagan National Airport as the search continues at the ****** site of the American Airlines plane on the Potomac River. He’s handling a lawsuit stemming from the collapse of Pittsburgh’s Fern Hollow Bridge in 2022, which injured 10. He successfully introduced facts from an NTSB investigation into his lawsuit last year. Another vital piece of the lawsuits will be calculating damages, for which Matzus said firms will rely on forensic economists. “Were they a stay-at-home parent or the primary breadwinner?” Matzus said. “Parents will also be able to make claims for their children and estimate their earnings over their life based on the parents’ educational background and earning history.” But the non-economic damages in the plane ****** are more important, Matzus said. “Claims will be significant. It’s premature, but conservatively speaking these will be multimillion dollar claims each,” he said. “And the life cycle of a case in this type of situation is several years.” Nick Penzenstadler is a reporter on the USA TODAY investigations team.
