Burnley, QPR enjoy home wins to boost promotion hopes Burnley, QPR enjoy home wins to boost promotion hopes Burnley have edged into the Championship’s top two on goal difference as Michal Helik’s first-half own goal gave Scott Parker’s side a 1-0 win over Oxford United. It extended the Clarets’ unbeaten run to 18 games and was a ninth straight clean sheet, but Burnley’s goalscoring struggles persisted against a side in the bottom half of the table, albeit one that arrived on a nine-game unbeaten run as Gary Rowett has steered them away from trouble since taking over in December. Turf Moor had witnessed three consecutive goalless draws before this and the home fans ironically chanted ‘We’ve scored a goal!’ – their first at home since December 21 – after taking the lead in the 33rd minute, even if it was actually Oxford who scored it for them. Lyle Foster spotted the run of Josh Cullen into the box and the midfielder’s low cross was aimed at Zian Flemming but before it could reach him the unfortunate Helik turned it into his own net. It was only Burnley’s 37th goal in 31 league games this season. But they were worthy of the lead and the win as, eight days after failing to register a shot on target at home against Leeds United, they created more than enough chances to have made this much more comfortable. The win put Burnley two points behind Leeds (63) and level with Sheffield United, although both sides have a game in hand. Elsewhere on Tuesday night, veteran midfielder Jack Colback climbed off the bench to fire Queens Park Rangers to a 2-1 victory over Blackburn. The 35-year-old former Sunderland and Newcastle midfielder thumped home from 18 yards for his first goal in just over a year as QPR got back to winning ways after two straight defeats. Michael Frey had put Rangers ahead after only five minutes, but Rovers thought they had secured a point through Tyrhys Dolan’s second-half penalty. However, Colback’s thunderbolt put a dent in Blackburn’s play-off bid, although they remain fifth, while Rangers are now only three points adrift of the top six. Wreckfest 2 hits Steam Early Access in March Wreckfest 2 hits Steam Early Access in March The PC version of Wreckfest 2 will receive a Steam Early Access release on March 20, 2025, it’s been confirmed. Announced last summer, the demolition derby-style racer is being developed by Wreckfest and FlatOut studio Bugbear, and published by its parent company THQ Nordic. At release next month it will include the base game modes of Racing, Derby and Multiplayer. And during the Early Access phase, Bugbear will add a revamped career mode, plus a new skill-based matchmaking system and server queues for online races. The sequel will also be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at a later date. “Brace yourself for the most phenomenal full-contact racing action with no rules, just jaw dropping moments of chaos and destruction, powered by the completely overhauled physics engine,” reads a description on the game’s official website. “Race in intense head-to-head fights on high-speed circuits, face obstacles on crazy courses with jumps, intersections and oncoming traffic, or go for demolition domination in various derby arenas.” The original Wreckfest was released for PC in June 2018 before making its way to PS4 and Xbox One in 2019, to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021, and to Nintendo Switch in 2022. It was well received by critics, earning it scores of 81 (PC), 83 (Xbox One), 82 (PS4), 79 (PS5) and 71 (Xbox Series X/S) on review aggregation site Metacritic. Should You Replace Pebbles in KCD2? – First Horse in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Should You Replace Pebbles in KCD2? – First Horse in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Since Kingdom Come Deliverance (2018), Henry of Skalitz has sat atop Pebbles, his trusty nag. While Pebbles isn’t the most attractive or capable horse at first blush, she’s a familiar sight in the series and has sentimental value. With that in mind, should you replace Pebbles in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 when you’re given the opportunity? In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to get your first horse in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and whether you should replace Pebbles once you’ve tracked her down. Where is Pebbles? In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, players start the game alongside Pebbles, but a dire set of circumstances unfold, leaving Henry horse-less. Not for long, though. Once you’ve completed the opening sequences, you’ll want to make a beeline for Semine. When you’ve been released from the stocks in Troskowitz, you can speak to Bara (the red-clothed woman) and she’ll give you a tip on where to find a horse, recommending that you head to the Semine stables. If you make your way there, you’ll be greeted with an idyllic location complete with a stables, and upon examining the horses, you’ll notice something strange – one of them is Pebbles. Once you’ve identified Pebbles, you can speak to Groom Ballatay, attempting to buy Pebbles or convincing him to give Pebbles back for free. That’ll require passing a speech check or two, and you’ll have to convince him to ‘be reasonable’ to get Pebbles back. Should You Replace Pebbles? If you’re asking yourself, ‘Should I replace Pebbles,’ then I’m ashamed of you. This beautiful horse has been through the wringer and the first thing you want to do is replace her! Here is the major reason why you don’t want to replace Pebbles in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Eventually, you’ll unlock the ‘Good Old Pebbles’ perk, which boosts Pebbles’ skills immeasurably after a few hours of relying on her to get around. This makes her better than almost any horse you can buy. If you don’t like how Pebbles looks, you can customise her at a tailor or a saddler by selecting from a range of coats, covers, bridles, and saddles. Once you’ve got Pebbles, make sure you’re firing from horseback with the best ranged weapon in the game. Critics call Trump’s release of California reservoir water dangerous, wasteful – National Critics call Trump’s release of California reservoir water dangerous, wasteful – National Water experts are sounding the alarm after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the opening of two dams in Central California late last week, letting approximately 2.2 billion gallons of water flow out of reservoirs. The Army Corps of Engineers released water from two reservoirs in the Sierra Nevada on Friday, but the move didn’t allow for much warning for local farmers, reported Politico. “Local water managers on the Kaweah and Tule rivers had to move equipment and alert farms about possible flooding with only an hour’s notice,” Kaweah River Water Master Victor Hernandez told the outlet, calling the situation “alarming and scary.” He’s not the only one expressing concerns about the water management tactic, which many have argued is a misguided move on the part of Trump, who said in recent weeks that California withheld critical water supplies that could have made a difference when fighting the flames of wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles and Southern California last month. Story continues below advertisement On Friday, Trump posted an announcement showing a photo of a flowing river, calling it the “beautiful water flow that I just opened in California.” A post from President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform, boasting about releasing water from California dams. Truth Social “There is absolutely no connection between this water and the water needed for firefighting in L.A.,” Peter Gleick, a climate and hydrology expert and senior fellow with the American non-profit Pacific Institute, told CBS News. “There’s no physical connection. There’s no way to move the water from where it is to the Los Angeles basin.” Furthermore, Gleick told the Los Angeles Times, the water will “not be used or usable for firefighting, not be used by farmers since this isn’t the irrigation season, and won’t be saved for the dry season, which is coming.” Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. It was “a needlessly self-destructive action purely for political showmanship,” Gleick said. Story continues below advertisement 1:19 Trump claims California could use B.C.’s ‘very large faucet’ Here’s a look at how the release of water could affect California residents, farm operations and animals in coming months. Risk of flooding Some experts argue that winter — typically when California receives most of its precipitation — was not the best time to release water from the dams, arguing it may be wasted or even lead to flooding. “Releasing it now, when it’s raining doesn’t do anybody good, except it creates the very real risk of potential flooding,” water strategist Barry Nelson told CBS. Hernandez told Politico that local officials were able to step in at the last minute and narrowly prevent flooding over the weekend, talking the Army Corps of Engineers into releasing just 2.2 billion gallons, instead of the 5.2 billion gallons Trump boasted were coming in his Truth Social post. Story continues below advertisement [Hidden Content] While it’s not unusual for water to be released from dams ahead of heavy precipitation events, like the rainfall that hit Northern California over the weekend, Hernandez said Trump’s initial directive would have released far more water than needed and flooded the Kaweah and Tule rivers. “Channel capacity is very dangerous,” Hernandez told Politico. “People don’t understand that [with] channel capacity, you’re going to have flood damage down below.” Risk of insufficient water Trending Now Canada to divert aluminum to Europe in response to Trump tariffs Musk Starlink deal with Ontario government back on hours after threat to rip it up More on Science and Tech More videos Other experts argue that while the amount of water released was less than Trump initially ordered, it could have been used during California’s notoriously arid summers instead. “They were holding extra water in those reservoirs because of the risk that it would be a dry summer,” Heather Cooley, director of research for the Pacific Institute, told CNN. “This puts agriculture at risk of insufficient water during the summer months.” “These kinds of shenanigans, they hurt smaller farmers,” agreed Dezaraye Bagalayos, a local water activist, speaking to the Los Angeles Times. Small growers have already been struggling, she said, and the releasing of water from dams this time of year means there will be less during the peak growing season. “The last thing in the world California water management needs is somebody like Trump calling shots when he doesn’t know how anything works,” Bagalayos said. “It’s making an already hard situation very, very difficult. We don’t have a lot of wiggle room in the state of California to be messing around with our water supply like this.” Story continues below advertisement Risk to salmon Humans aren’t the only ones potentially facing risks and dangerous conditions as a result of Trump’s order. Nelson, a policy consultant for the Golden State Salmon Association, told CBS that their members have had to hold off fishing for the past two years because of dwindling supply of Chinook salmon. “California salmon are right now at one of the most disastrous points they’ve been at, certainly in human history,” said Nelson, adding that rivers with larger flows during hot months are crucial to salmon populations. “We’ve now gone to a point where many of our most important salmon runs are on the brink of extinction.” Moreover, the group Save California Salmon, which represents tribal communities and the salmon fishing industry, told local outlet Cal Matters that Trump “suggests a water scarcity that does not exist,” and blamed the closing of the state’s Chinook salmon fishery, which shut down in 2023, on water regulations implemented during Trump’s first administration five years ago. 1:56 L.A. wildfires: How record rain contributed to devastation © 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance The faith-oriented gatherings begin on Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. when the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance kicks off at the Museum of the ******. The website for the event says that America’s hope can not be found in political leaders or parties but in God. The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, co-founder of the event, states, “True and lasting transformation requires spiritual revival. If America is to thrive, if we are to pass this precious experiment down to future generations, we must remember this: political and economic greatness cannot survive without moral goodness.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and former Rep. Michele Bachmann, Dean of the Regent University Robertson School of Government, are just two of the prominent participants in this solemn gathering of prayer and repentance. International Religious Freedom Summit Also on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance will reportedly be speaking at the International Religious Freedom Conference’s International Religious Freedom Summit. He will highlight the Trump administration’s commitment to fighting the widespread problem of global religious persecution. USCIRF Chair Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett said, “This marks a significant moment for this Summit and the worldwide religious freedom movement. Snap Q4 earnings report Snap Q4 earnings report The head of Snapchat operator Snap, Evan Spiegel, presents the new generation of Spectacles. Andrej Sokolow | Picture Alliance | Getty Images Snap shares jumped rallied in extended trading on Tuesday after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. Here is how the company did compared with Wall Street’s expectations. Earnings per share: 16 cents adjusted vs. 14 cents expected, according to LSEG Revenue: $1.56 billion vs. $1.55 billion expected, according to LSEG Global daily active users: 453 million vs. 451.1 million expected, according to StreetAccount Global average revenue per user: $3.44 vs. $3.44 expected, according to StreetAccount Revenue for the fourth quarter increased 14% from $1.36 billion a year earlier. Net income in the quarter was $9.1 million, or a penny a share. In the prior year, Snap recorded a fourth-quarter net loss of $248 million, or 15 cents a share. Snap said that it expects first-quarter revenue to come in between $1.325 billion and $1.36 billion. The midpoint of that range is $1.34 billion, higher than Wall Street projections of $1.33 billion. However, Snap’s first-quarter adjusted earnings will fall in the range of $40 million to $75 million, below analyst expectations of $78.5 million. In an investor letter, Snap attributed the guidance to “investment plans for the quarter ahead.” First-quarter adjusted operating expenses will grow in the range of 11% to 12% year-over-year due to hiring, legal-related costs, and “a seasonal shift of marketing expenses into Q1 relative to the prior year,” Snap said. “As we look ahead to 2025, we see additional opportunities to invest productively in scaling our business given the foundational improvements we have made to our ad platform and the momentum we have established in our go to market initiatives,” particularly in the segment focused on small and medium-sized businesses, Snap said in the letter. “Our investment plans for 2025 reflect this optimism, alongside a strong commitment to make further financial progress towards profitability as we scale.” Additionally, the company said it committed $5 million to “support communities and team members” affected by the recent Los Angeles Wildfires and that it anticipates making “further commitments over time.” In September, the New Mexico attorney general filed a lawsuit against Snap that alleged the company’s Snapchat app’s design and recommendation systems “openly foster and promote illicit ******* material involving children and facilitate sextortion and the trafficking of children, drugs, and guns.” Earlier in January, Snap shares dropped after the Federal Trade Commission said it would refer a complaint against the company related to its My AI chatbot to the Department of Justice. Last week, Meta reported fourth-quarter results that beat on revenue and earnings and reiterated its plans to spend heavily on AI-related investments. Alphabet on Tuesday beat on earnings but missed on revenue. Pinterest reports earnings on Thursday followed by Reddit next week. Snap said daily active users for the first quarter will be 459 million, topping analyst expectations of 458.3 million. The company said its Snapchat+ service now has 14 million subscribers, up from the 12 million it reported during the third quarter. The service, which debuted in 2022, makes up the bulk of what Snap calls “other revenue.” That unit grew 131% year-over-year in 2024 and has an “annualized revenue run rate of well over $500 million,” the company said. Snap said that Ajit Mohan will become chief business officer after previously serving as president of Asia-Pacific region. Before joining Snap in 2023, Mohan was the vice president and managing director of India at Meta. Trump says Iran would be ‘obliterated’ if it assassinated him – National Trump says Iran would be ‘obliterated’ if it assassinated him – National U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he’s given his advisers instructions to obliterate Iran if it assassinates him. “If they did that they would be obliterated,” Trump said in an exchange with reporters while signing what he called a “tough” presidential memorandum calling for the U.S. government to impose maximum pressure on Tehran. “I’ve left instructions if they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left.” Federal authorities have been tracking Iranian threats against Trump and other administration officials for years. Trump ordered the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani, who led the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force. A threat on Trump’s life from Iran prompted additional security in the days before a July campaign rally in Pennsylvania where Trump was shot in the ear, according to U.S. officials. But officials at the time said they did not believe Iran was connected to that assassination attempt. Story continues below advertisement The Justice Department announced in November that an Iranian plot to kill Trump before the presidential election had been thwarted. 1:35 FBI thwarts alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump The department alleged Iranian officials had instructed Farhad Shakeri, 51, in September to focus on surveilling and ultimately assassinating Trump. Shakeri is still at large in Iran. Iranian officials, at the time, dismissed the allegation, with foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei calling the report a plot by Israel-linked circles to make Iran-U.S. relations more complicated. Investigators were told of the plan to kill Trump by Shakeri, an accused Iranian government asset who spent time in American prisons for robbery and who authorities say maintained a network of criminal associates enlisted by Tehran for surveillance and *******-for-hire plots, according to the complaint. Shakeri, an Afghan national living in Iran, told the FBI that a contact in Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard instructed him last September to set aside other work he was doing and assemble a plan within seven days to surveil and ultimately kill Trump, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court in Manhattan. Story continues below advertisement Trump recently revoked government security protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his top aide, Brian Hook, as well as his former national security adviser John Bolton, who have all faced threats from Iran after they took hardline stances against the Islamic Republic during Trump’s first administration. ‘Tough’ memo raises ‘maximum pressure’ on Tehran The comments came ahead of a White House meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. Get daily National news Get the day’s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day. Trump said while signing the memo he would be willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart to try to persuade Iran to give up what the United States believes are Tehran’s efforts to develop a nuclear weapon. Trump also said Iran is too close to having a nuclear weapon and that the United States has the right to block the ***** of Iranian oil to other nations. 1:47 Netanyahu, Trump see ‘eye-to-eye’ on Iran: Israeli PM Trump has accused former president Joe Biden of failing to rigorously enforce oil-export sanctions, which Trump says emboldened Tehran by allowing it to sell oil to fund a nuclear weapons program and armed militias in the Middle East. Story continues below advertisement Iran is “dramatically” accelerating enrichment of uranium to up to 60% purity, close to the roughly 90% weapons-grade level, the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief told Reuters in December. Iran has denied wanting to develop a nuclear weapon. Trump’s memo, among other things, orders the U.S. Treasury secretary to impose “maximum economic pressure” on Iran, including sanctions and enforcement mechanisms on those violating existing sanctions. It also directs the Treasury and State Department to implement a campaign aimed at “driving Iran’s oil exports to zero.”U.S. oil prices pared losses on Tuesday on the news that Trump planned to sign the memo, which offset some weakness from the tariff drama between Washington and Beijing O/R. Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tehran’s oil exports brought in $53 billion in 2023 and $54 billion a year earlier, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates. Output during 2024 was running at its highest level since 2018, based on OPEC data. 1:10 Iran says it will negotiate with UN nuclear agency, but not under pressure Trending Now Sweden shooting leaves 10, including gunman, dead at education centre Made in Canada vs. Product of Canada: Know the difference to ‘Buy *********’ Trump had driven Iran’s oil exports to near-zero during part of his first term after re-imposing sanctions. They rose under Biden’s tenure as Iran succeeded in evading sanctions. Story continues below advertisement The Paris-based International Energy Agency believes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other OPEC members have spare capacity to make up for any lost exports from Iran, also an OPEC member. Push for sanctions snapback China does not recognize U.S. sanctions and ******** firms buy the most Iranian oil. China and Iran have also built a trading system that uses mostly ******** yuan and a network of middlemen, avoiding the dollar and exposure to U.S. regulators. Kevin Book, an analyst at ClearView Energy, said the Trump administration could enforce the 2024 Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum (SHIP) law to curtail some Iranian barrels. SHIP, which the Biden administration did not enforce strictly, allows measures on foreign ports and refineries that process petroleum exported from Iran in violation of sanctions. Book said a move last month by the Shandong Port Group to ban U.S.-sanctioned tankers from calling into its ports in the eastern ******** province signals the impact SHIP could have. Story continues below advertisement Trump also directed his U.N. ambassador to work with allies to “complete the snapback of international sanctions and restrictions on Iran,” under a 2015 deal between Iran and key world powers that lifted sanctions on Tehran in return for restrictions on its nuclear program. 1:55 What Iran’s religious leaders want and its military capability as hostilities grow with Israel The U.S. quit the agreement in 2018, during Trump’s first term, and Iran began moving away from its nuclear-related commitments under the deal. The Trump administration had also tried to trigger a snapback of sanctions under the deal in 2020, but the move was dismissed by the U.N. Security Council. Britain, France and Germany told the United Nations Security Council in December that they are ready – if necessary – to trigger a snapback of all international sanctions on Iran to prevent the country from acquiring a nuclear weapon. They will lose the ability to take such action on Oct. 18 when a 2015 U.N. resolution expires. The resolution enshrines Iran’s deal with Britain, Germany, France, the United States, Russia and China that lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program. Story continues below advertisement Iran’s U.N. ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, has said that invoking the “snap-back” of sanctions on Tehran would be “unlawful and counterproductive.” European and Iranian diplomats met in November and January to discuss if they could work to defuse regional tensions, including over Tehran’s nuclear program, before Trump returned. —With additional files from Reuters More on World More videos Source link #Trump #Iran #obliterated #assassinated #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Orebro: At least 10 killed in deadliest mass shooting as police search for motive Orebro: At least 10 killed in deadliest mass shooting as police search for motive About 10 people have been killed in a shooting at an adult education centre, Swedish police say, in the deadliest attack to take place in Sweden on what the prime minister says is a “painful day” for the country. The gunman is believed to be among those killed and a search is continuing at the school for other possible victims, the local police chief told a press conference. The perpetrator’s motive was not immediately known. “We know that 10 or so people have been killed here today. The reason that we can’t be more exact currently is that the extent of the incident is so large,” local police chief Roberto Eid Forest told reporters. Forest said police believed the gunman had acted alone and that they did not currently suspect terrorism as a motive, although he cautioned that much remained unknown. He said the suspected gunman had not previously been known to police. “We have a big crime scene, we have to complete the searches we are conducting in the school. There are a number of investigative steps we are taking: a profile of the perpetrator, witness interviews … Obviously, it’s a significant amount of work.” he said. The shooting took place in Orebro, 200km west of Stockholm, at the Risbergska school for adults who did not complete their formal education or failed to get the marks to continue to higher education. It is located on a campus that also houses schools for children. “It is a very painful day for the whole of Sweden,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on X. “My thoughts are (also) with all of those whose normal school day was turned into fear. Being locked up in a classroom fearing for your life is a nightmare no one should have to experience.” Maria Pegado, 54, a teacher at the school, said someone threw open the door to her classroom just after lunch break and shouted to everyone to get out. “I took all my 15 students out into the hallway and we started running,” she told Reuters by phone. “Then I heard two shots but we made it out. We were close to the school entrance.” “I saw people dragging injured out, first one, then another. I realised it was very serious,” she said. Credit: Pontus Lundahl/EPA A hospital spokesperson told Reuters that out of five patients admitted at the Orebro University Hospital, one had light injuries while four were operated on. Two of the latter were out of surgery and stable while one had serious injuries. Police said students had been kept indoors at the school that was targeted and at other schools nearby for their safety. Police later began helping those who had taken shelter to leave. Sweden has been struggling with a wave of shootings and bombings caused by an endemic gang crime problem but fatal attacks at schools are rare. with AP Source link #Orebro #killed #deadliest #mass #shooting #police #search #motive Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Multiple people killed in ‘worst mass shooting in Swedish history,’ authorities say Multiple people killed in ‘worst mass shooting in Swedish history,’ authorities say Police said “around 10 people” were killed at a school on Tuesday, in what has been described as the worst mass shooting in Sweden’s history. The suspected perpetrator is among the dead. A large number of people were injured after a gunman opened fire at a campus in the city of Örebro in central Sweden, according to Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the city’s police district. Speaking at a press conference late Tuesday, Forest explained that police were not able to report the exact death toll as the investigation was in its early stages. Police said that the perpetrator was not known to them before the shooting and that he was not connected to any gangs. They also said they did not believe the motive was terror related. Police did not say what type of weapon was used by the gunman. “We think he is a lone perpetrator,” Forest said. He added that the shooting was “extremely tragic, with many involved.” “It’s a terrible event, it’s exceptional – a nightmare,” Forest added. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson offered his condolences to the victims and their families and thanked the police during a press conference on Tuesday. “We’ve today seen brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people – this is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history,” he said. Speaking alongside the prime minister, the country’s Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called it an “unspeakably sad tragedy.” The shooting occurred inside Campus Risbergska – a school for adult education – which is located on a campus where other schools, including those for children, are based. Officers were first called at around 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET), Forest said. Six people had been taken to the local university hospital, including five with gunshot wounds, according to Jonas Claesson, the regional health care director. Four had undergone surgery, including two who are now in a stable condition, he said. Police at the scene of an incident at Campus Risbergska school. – Kicki Nilsson/ TT News Agency/AP CNN affiliate Expressen reported earlier that there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the perpetrator, quoting police spokesperson Lars Hedlin. It is unclear how many people were injured in total, but police said no officers were shot. The public were urged to avoid the area and stay indoors. Authorities cordon off the site of the shooting at school. Swedish police warned “the danger is not over.” – Kicki Nilsson/TT News Agency/AP Students are being transferred from schools next to the site of the shooting in Örebro, which lies 160 kilometers (100 miles) west of the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The police said in a later update they were investigating various addresses in Örebro and that work at the crime scene continued. “At the moment, the police believe that the perpetrator was acting alone, but we cannot rule out more perpetrators connected to the incident,” it said. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf said his family received the news of the shooting “with sadness and dismay” in a written statement Tuesday. “Tonight we send our condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts at this moment also go to the injured and their relatives as well as others affected,” the king said, adding his “appreciation” to the emergency services “who worked intensively to save and secure human lives on this dark day.” ‘We heard three bangs’ One eyewitness recalled sounds of terror filling the corridors of the school, the Associated Press reported, citing Sweden’s Expressen newspaper. “We heard three bangs and loud screams,” Andreas Sundling, 28, said while sheltering in a classroom. “Now we’re sitting here waiting to be evacuated from the school. The information we have received is that we should sit and wait.” The Risbergska school offers courses at elementary school and high school level for students ages 20 and over – including classes for immigrants, as well as vocational training. There were an unusually low number of students on campus at the time of the attack, according to a teacher at the school. Many students had left campus after taking a national exam Tuesday, Lena Warenmark told state broadcaster SVT News, according to the Associated Press. Scandinavian authorities have worked to crack down on gun violence over recent years, following an uptick in deadly gang-related shootings. In 2024, at least 40 people were shot dead there, according to Reuters. That year, police said they prevented more than 100 serious crimes. In 2023, Sweden tallied the highest rate of gun violence per capita. Earlier Tuesday, Kristersson had called for an investigation into “how these horrific crimes could have occurred.” “It is with sadness that I have received information about the terrible act of violence in Örebro. My thoughts are with those who have been affected and their relatives. It is a very painful day for all of Sweden,” Kristersson posted on X. “My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day was replaced with terror. Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience,” he added. “I’ve left instructions if they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left.” The Justice Department announced in federal charges in November that an Iranian plot to kill Trump before the presidential election had been thwarted. The department alleged Iranian officials had instructed Farhad Shakeri, 51, in September to focus on surveilling and ultimately assassinating Trump. Shakeri is still at large in Iran. Trump said he would be willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart to try to persuade Iran to give up what the United States believes are Tehran’s efforts to develop a nuclear weapon. Story continues below advertisement Trump also said Iran is too close to having a nuclear weapon and that the United States has the right to block the ***** of Iranian oil to other nations. The comments came ahead of a White House meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. Iran is “dramatically” accelerating enrichment of uranium to up to 60% purity, close to the roughly 90% weapons-grade level, the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief told Reuters in December. Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tehran’s oil exports brought in $53 billion in 2023 and $54 billion a year earlier, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates. They rose under Biden’s tenure as Iran succeeded in evading sanctions. Kevin Book, an analyst at ClearView Energy, said the Trump administration could enforce the 2024 Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum (SHIP) law to curtail some Iranian barrels. Book said a move last month by the Shandong Port Group to ban U.S.-sanctioned tankers from calling into its ports in the eastern ******** province signals the impact SHIP could have. Simona Halep: Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one retires Simona Halep: Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one retires Halep memorably won her first major title at the French Open in 2018, defeating Sloane Stephens, having lost her previous three Grand Slam finals. She then won at Wimbledon in 2019, committing just three unforced errors in a stunning final victory over Serena Williams. She won 22 other WTA Tour titles and spent 64 weeks as world number one. Halep was given a four-year ban for two separate doping offences after initially testing positive for a banned substance in August 2022. She always maintained her innocence and appealed against the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2024. The panel ruled Halep, “on the balance of probabilities”, had not taken roxadustat intentionally and her ban was reduced to nine months. She subsequently returned to the WTA Tour in March 2024 but played just six matches through to 2025 and won only once. “I’ve always been realistic with myself and with my body,” Halep said. “Where I probably was, it’s very hard to get there and I know what it means to get there.” Source link #Simona #Halep #Twotime #Grand #Slam #champion #world #number #retires Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Tariff worries are rattling stocks. How investors can prepare for the next big market upset Tariff worries are rattling stocks. How investors can prepare for the next big market upset The Trump administration’s tariff policy sent stocks on a roller-coaster ride on Monday, and further tumult could be ahead for investors. On Monday, the major averages saw a sharp swing on the heels of President Donald Trump signing an order over the weekend that would impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, plus a 10% duty on China. At its session low that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid more than 660 points – only to rapidly cut its losses to about 123 points after Trump said there would be a one-month pause on Mexico tariffs . The president also reached an agreement with ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that delays those duties for at least 30 days. .DJI 5D mountain The Dow Jones Industrial Average over the past five trading days It could be a while before stocks calm down, too. “Markets may remain volatile until clarity on tariffs becomes evident,” said Bank of America quant strategist Nigel Tupper in a Tuesday note. Broadly fleeing equities when the ride gets rocky hinders long-term returns, as investors must be right about when they sell out and when they get back in – and they often aren’t. But it doesn’t hurt to kick the tires on your portfolio and develop a plan for those dramatic swings. “It’s a time to look at your portfolio, and that’s an ongoing regular hygiene piece of it,” said Joel Dickson, global head of advice methodology at Vanguard. Indeed, there is typically a market correction – that is, a 10% decline from the highs – once a year , according to Bank of America. “If those corrections are making you lose sleep, it should be a signal that you may need to reevaluate your risk tolerance,” Dickson said. Take your temperature A sharp sell-off could be investors’ cue to check in with their goals, their time horizon and their ability to stomach a big swing in portfolio values. “The practical steps, if you will, are the tried-and-true ones that we’re often talking about,” said Dickson, noting that investors need to focus on what they can control. “How to diversify among asset classes to weather ups and downs, [how to] control costs, and how comfortable are you with the risk you take?” If you’re working with an advisor, you can find other ways to take advantage of wild market swings. For instance, tax loss harvesting – or selling losing positions and using those losses to offset taxable capital gains elsewhere – offers investors a silver lining in a big sell-off. Reinvest the proceeds, but make sure you avoid violating the wash-***** rule. The IRS will block the loss if you buy a “substantially similar” security to the one you sold within 30 days before or after the *****. Rebalance and diversify Last year’s Big Tech winners stumbled out of the gates in 2025, with the tech sector down more than 3% year to date. .GSPT 1Y mountain The S & P 500 Information Technology Sector in the past year Investors who want to level out some of that volatility and whose goals call for portfolio income may want to turn toward dividend payers. “At a time when the market is cooperating, you can benefit from capital appreciation,” said Marguerita Cheng, certified financial planner and CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth in Gaithersburg, Maryland. “And you get dividend income in times when the market doesn’t cooperate. If you reinvest the dividend income, it kind of levels out the volatility.” On a sector level, Gargi Chaudhuri, BlackRock’s chief investment and portfolio strategist, Americas, highlighted financials and health care as corners of the market that can offer diversification and solid earnings growth. Fixed income is also presenting an opportunity, where investors have attractive yields and don’t have to reach down in quality or too far out in duration – which is a measurement of a bond’s price sensitivity to rate fluctuations – to get it. When it comes to core fixed income, Chaudhuri’s team prefers the short end of the yield curve, through the 3- to 7-year belly. “We think of income-generating potential, especially in the front end of the curve – you don’t need to take a lot of interest rate risk,” she said. Offerings that fit that bill include the iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) and the iShares Flexible Income Active ETF (BINC) . IEI has a 30-day SEC yield of 4.39% and an expense ratio of 0.15%, while BINC has a net expense ratio of 0.4%, and a 30-day SEC yield of 5.62%. Double check cash reserves Even as it’s imprudent to flee stocks and hide in cash, it doesn’t hurt to make sure you have enough set aside for emergencies – and for opportunistic buying in sell-offs. The Crane 100 Money Fund Index has an annualized seven-day current yield of 4.19%, meaning that individuals parking cash in their money market funds are still being handsomely rewarded for it. Further, high-yield savings accounts are still offering APYs exceeding 4%. The rule of thumb for emergency funds calls for three to six months’ worth of living expenses, though some advisors have called for 12 to 18 months. “Interest rates on high-yield savings may have gone down a little bit, but they are still higher than they were in past years,” said Cheng. “Make sure you have cash reserves for any emergencies, contingencies and opportunities – that’s what I’ve been telling people.” Source link #Tariff #worries #rattling #stocks #investors #prepare #big #market #upset Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Best CS2 Players at IEM Katowice 2025 – Top Performers After Groups Best CS2 Players at IEM Katowice 2025 – Top Performers After Groups IEM Katowice is considered a prestige event in the massive Counter-Strike 2 calendar, and the best CS2 players there are delivering. The best players in the world are competing in the $1 million tournament, and both some familiar and new faces are shining the brightest. Here are the best CS2 players from IEM Katowice after the conclusion of the group stage. Best CS2 Players from IEM Katowice 2025 Group Stage Danil “donk” Kryshkovets Is anyone else surprised? You shouldn’t be. Last year’s consensus best player of the year has the highest rating of any player after the IEM Katowice group stages. He also finished with the highest ADR (average damage per round) rating and K/D differential of any player. Unsurprisingly, he was the lead man in Spirit’s playoff-clinching win over GamerLegion. Guy “NertZ” Iluz Liquid may have fallen short of reaching IEM Katowice playoffs, but fans can be happy with how NertZ performed in Katowice. The team’s newest addition was an absolute force in creating opening kills, and was only outdone in ADR by donk. NertZ is clearly an upgrade for Liquid, and once the team cleans some things up, they should be a more familiar face in playoffs. Oldřich “PR” Nový Every year, a new player emerges and threatens to break into the top echelon of Counter-Strike players. This year, an early contender for rookie of the year is Oldřich “PR” Nový, a 17 year old Czech player for GamerLegion. After some impressive matches against paiN and MOUZ, PR had a head-turning performance against the once great Astralis. On Mirage in particular, he dropped a staggering 29 kills and only died 7 times. PR and GamerLegion ultimately fell to donk and Spirit, missing playoffs, but he’s a player to keep watching in the future. İsmailсan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş Eternal Fire is one of the hottest teams at the start of 2025, and XANTARES is a big reason why. The veteran rifler was having a solid event throughout groups, but he shined the brightest in a thrilling multi-overtime Nuke game against FaZe. XANTARES dropped a server-high 49 kills on Nuke, and won 12 out of 16 opening duels, pushing Eternal Fire over the finish line and into playoffs over FaZe. Everyone on NAVI NAVI are the best team of 2024 and winners of the first CS2 Major, and everyone on the roster has been red hot in Katowice. Of the top 10 players according to HLTV player ratings, four of them are NAVI players: b1t, jL, iM, and w0nderful. Judge says Elon Musk’s claims of harm from OpenAI are a ‘stretch’ but welcomes possible trial Judge says Elon Musk’s claims of harm from OpenAI are a ‘stretch’ but welcomes possible trial OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Elon Musk’s lawyers faced off with OpenAI in court Tuesday as a federal judge weighed the billionaire’s request for a court order that would block the ChatGPT maker from converting itself to a for-profit company. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said it was a “stretch” for Musk to claim he will be irreparably harmed if she doesn’t intervene to stop OpenAI from moving forward with its transition from a nonprofit research laboratory to a for-profit corporation. But the judge also raised concerns about OpenAI and its relationship with business partner Microsoft and said she wouldn’t stop the case from moving to trial as soon as next year so a jury can decide. “It is plausible that what Mr. Musk is saying is true. We’ll find out. He’ll sit on the stand,” she said. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company last year, first in a California state court and later in federal court, alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good. Musk had invested about $45 million in the startup from its founding until 2018, his lawyer said Tuesday. Musk escalated the legal dispute late last year, adding new claims and defendants and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. Musk also added his own AI company, xAI, as a plaintiff. Also targeted by Musk’s lawsuit is OpenAI’s close business partner Microsoft and tech entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, a former OpenAI board member who also sits on Microsoft’s board. Gonzalez Rogers said she has a high bar for approving the kind of preliminary injunction that Musk wants but hasn’t yet ruled on the request. She has handled a number of tech industry cases including Apple’s fight with Epic Games, though she said Tuesday that Musk’s case is “nothing like” that one. Then-President Barack Obama appointed her to the federal bench in 2011. Tuesday’s hearing was originally set for January but was postponed after Musk’s attorney Marc Toberoff said his house was destroyed in the Pacific Palisades wildfire. Musk, who did not attend the hearing, has alleged in the lawsuit that the companies are violating the terms of his foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI has said Musk’s requested court order would “debilitate OpenAI’s business” and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company and is based on “far-fetched” legal claims. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI’s CEO. Story Continues He had also sought to be CEO and grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO and has remained so except for a ******* in 2023 when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI has sought to demonstrate Musk’s early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. Musk is not the only one challenging OpenAI’s for-profit transition. Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms has asked California’s attorney general to block it, and the office of Delaware’s attorney general has said it is reviewing the conversion. ——————— O’Brien reported from Providence, Rhode Island. ——————- The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement that allows OpenAI access to part of AP’s text archives.
