  2. Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy says death was ‘tragic accident’ Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy says death was ‘tragic accident’ Liam Payne’s girlfriend has said she would “never have left Argentina”, if she had known the singer’s death would happen. US influencer Kate Cassidy – who had been in a relationship with the One Direction star since 2022 – told the Sun in an exclusive interview that Payne’s death was a “tragic accident”. “No, I never did think [he might die young]… I just never thought this would have happened,” she added, in her first interview since he died. Payne died in October last year, after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31. A week after his death, Cassidy posted a tribute to the singer online, describing him as “my best friend, the love of my life”. She also posted a photo of a note written by Payne shortly before he died, suggesting the couple would marry within a year. The 25-year-old told the Sun: “Love is so optimistic, and you just hope that everything will work out at the end. “Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina”. She added that she never thought her travelling separately from him “would turn out the way it did”. Payne had been in Argentina on holiday to see his former bandmate Niall Horan in concert. Cassidy said that she had left Argentina and returned to their Florida home alone to take care of their dog, Nala. “I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur,” she explained. She added that “Liam was in such a good headspace when I left”. Payne’s sudden death sparked a debate about the music industry’s duty of care for young stars. Toxicology tests conducted shortly after his death revealed traces of alcohol, ******** and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body, the prosecutor’s office in Argentina said. The cause of his death was confirmed as “polytrauma” – a term for multiple traumatic injuries – at the opening of a *** inquest held in Buckinghamshire recently. According to the Sun, Cassidy has since left their Florida home and moved back to New Jersey. Cassidy said she believed they were “soulmates” from the first time they met, and that it “still doesn’t feel fully real” that he’s no longer there. “I’m trying to be the best I can be, but I feel like my life has changed so much. I think about Liam every second of every day,” she said adding: “That he won’t be there with me to navigate through this life, that I’ll have to deal with this without him by my side… it’s really hard.” The couple met in 2022, when Cassidy was a waitress in South Carolina, the paper reported. When she got the call about Payne’s death from a friend of his, she said: “I feel like I just completely blacked out. When I officially found the news out to be true, I felt numb. I tried to call him. I called pretty much everybody.” She told the Sun that she still calls Payne’s phone to hear his voicemail recording, and that while she used to fall asleep to his music, she can no longer play it. “Maybe one day,” she added. “We were in such a great place, just full of love; he was so happy and positive… you never truly know what tomorrow will bring, you never know.” Source link #Liam #Paynes #girlfriend #Kate #Cassidy #death #tragic #accident Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  3. Sam Kerr says she feared for her life in ill-fated taxi ride, reveals baby’s gender on witness stand Sam Kerr says she feared for her life in ill-fated taxi ride, reveals baby’s gender on witness stand Australia football star Sam Kerr has denied she was “drunk and kicking off” in the back of a London taxi before the ill-fated exchange with police that led to her being tried on a racially aggravated public order offence in a British court. On a draining day in the witness box, the Matildas captain relived the racism her family suffered in Australia, spoke of her similar experiences in England and reiterated she and her partner Kristie Mewis were “terrified” and feared they were being “kidnapped” by the cab’s driver. On a lighter note the trial doubled as an unusual gender reveal as Kerr said her American fiancée Mewis is carrying a baby boy, due in May. Kerr took the stand on day three of the trial and faced a demanding last half-hour of cross-examination from top London KC Bill Emlyn Jones, who last month was successfully prosecuting the case of Sara Sharif, a 10-year-old murdered by her father and step-mother. Mr Jones elicited from Kerr an agreement that “you were so drunk you were sick” but denied that she was “kicking off in the back because you were drunk, had misunderstood what was going on and your behaviour became excitable”. Kerr said her memory of the night was “decently good” although she could remember nothing of the driver who was described by the barrister as having a “strong south Asian accent” (which in the *** is likely to mean from the Indian sub-continent). This was relevant as earlier Kerr had told her own counsel, Grace Forbes, she “believed (the police) were treating me differently based on what they perceived was the colour of my skin, particularly PC Lovell”. Police constable Stephen Lovell is the officer Kerr twice called “f***ing stupid and white” in the early hours of January 30, 2023, leading to being charged with racially aggravated harassment with intent to cause alarm or distress. PC Lovell’s attitude “was triggering,” said Kerr. “I felt I had experienced this, people trying to put things on me because of how I look, who I am.” Kerr, mostly composed in demeanour and wearing a white long-sleeved top with her hair tied back, described how she had “witnessed my brother (former West Coast Eagles star Daniel) and father (Roger, who was is Anglo-Indian, and is in court) experience racism because of the colour of their skin”. Racism, she added, had “always been a touchy subject growing up, been prominent in Australia with the Indigenous population. I was about nine or ten when I first witnessed it. I was quite confused, then sad”. At school she was labelled “a trouble-maker when clearly I was not”. Even now, “at a shopping centre, if not dressed correctly, I get followed by security guards or staff”. Kerr explained after a night out in central London she and Mewis tried to call an Uber, which they prefer as the app has a ride-sharing function so friends can track a journey. Unable to do so they took a cab, which Kerr said she normally shuns on safety reasons, noting she had grown up amid speculation “Claremont killer” Bradley Edwards – who was convicted in 2020 for two murders in 1996 and 1997 – was a cabbie. The 40-minute trip home was fine until Kerr, feeling nauseous, put her head out of the window and began vomiting. At this point, she said, the cabbie began shouting and driving “dangerously and erratically,” speeding up and swerving round corners. Neither woman was wearing a seatbelt so they found themselves being thrown around the cab. Kerr said she feared for her life, both scared of crashing and of a male stranger “having power over us”. Mewis became distressed and Kerr said she felt protective. “That is the role I play in the relationship, I am the more masculine one. I am just seen as, for the lack of a better phrase, the man-type role”. When the taxi stopped by a police station and officers arrived she “felt relieved,” but became scared again as she “felt something dodgy was going on, I felt they were trying to get me for criminal damage,” after Mewis had broken a cab window trying to escape. That ultimately led to her abuse of PC Lovell. Of watching the exchange on a video recording she said, “It is hard to watch. I am embarrassed watching that back, the way I was acting, but also watching myself in that much distress.” Mewis will take the stand on Thursday after the cross-examination of Kerr concludes. 4. Warner Bros is sharing select movies for free on YouTube Warner Bros is sharing select movies for free on YouTube To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Over the past several weeks, Warner Bros. Entertainment has been uploading a selection of full movies to a on YouTube. It’s an odd move, considering parent Warner Bros. Discovery also owns the increasingly pricey streaming service . But free is free, so the company can be odd as much as it wants! It’d be easy to assume this is where the studio is putting its less prestigious back catalog, just to see if it can rake in some ad revenue from an unexpected source. And there is some impressively terrible stuff in the playlist, including a 1988 Bobcat Goldthwait vehicle that achieved the rare on Rotten Tomatoes. But this isn’t just a digital dumping ground for bad movies. Quality films such as Waiting for Guffman (from the hilarious Christopher Guest), The Science of Sleep (directed by Michel Gondry) and The Mission (starring Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons) are all currently available in full on the YouTube playlist. It’s tough to gauge exactly why Warner Bros. would be taking this route, or how the company is selecting movies to release. Maybe it’s a response to business debts. Maybe it’s a licensing issue. Whatever the reason, the TL;DR is that there are some fascinating movies you can stream for free, and new titles are being added every week. 5. Qualcomm sales beat estimates, shares drop after licensing forecast Qualcomm sales beat estimates, shares drop after licensing forecast By Stephen Nellis and Arsheeya Bajwa (Reuters) -Qualcomm on Wednesday forecast sales and profits above analyst expectations as artificial intelligence features helped fuel demand for smartphones, and its share price fell after the bell on expectations of flat revenue from its patent licensing business. For its current fiscal second quarter, Qualcomm forecast a sales range with a midpoint of $10.75 billion and adjusted profits of $2.80 per share, both above analyst estimates of sales of $10.34 billion and adjusted profits $2.69 per share, according to data from LSEG. During a conference call with analysts, Qualcomm executives said its lucrative patent licensing business, under which makers of 5G-connected products pay Qualcomm a small fee for its technology, will not have sales growth this year after an agreement with Huawei Technologies expired. Shares declined 4.8% after the results and executive comments. Investors have been looking for booming payoffs from AI, and Qualcomm’s stock price has rallied 14% so far in 2025, outperforming a gain of about 3% in the S&P 500. Qualcomm last year stopped selling chips to Huawei but still retained a license agreement with the ******** telecoms giant that analysts had estimated contributed 10 cents to 15 cents per share to its profits. “The Huawei discussions are still in play, so the numbers don’t actually include the potential from a renewal with Huawei,” Alex Rogers, Qualcomm’s licensing chief, said when asked about the forecast. Qualcomm, the world’s biggest supplier of modem chips that connect smartphones to wireless data networks, said last month it had won a major new deal with Samsung Electronics to provide chips for the South Korean firm’s flagship mobile phones around the world. San Diego, California-based Qualcomm is also working with Microsoft and computer manufacturers to offer a range of laptops and PCs based on its chips. “Expectations were somewhat high going into the print but we think it is justified as Qualcomm has a decent storyline for total addressable market expansion in the PC client market and share gain in the smartphone market with its strong position in the premium tier segment,” said Kinngai Chan, an analyst with Summit Insights. Qualcomm reported sales of $11.67 billion and adjusted profits of $3.41 per share for its fiscal first quarter ended December 29. Both were well above analyst estimates of $10.93 billion for sales and adjusted profits of $2.96 per share, according to data from LSEG. At the midpoints of the ranges, Qualcomm forecast second-quarter revenues of $9.2 billion for its chip business and $1.35 billion for patent licensing. Wall Street had expected $8.90 billion for chips and $1.43 billion for patent licensing, according to LSEG data. Story Continues While Qualcomm has diversified its offerings into PCs, cars and other markets, the smartphone market remains its stronghold, supplying both Apple and ******** handset makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. The ******** smartphone market has struggled with weak demand, with the ******** government stepping in to provide subsidies for low- and mid-tier handset sales in the country. Qualcomm said it had fiscal first quarter handset revenue of $7.57 billion, up 13% from the $6.69 billion it reported a year earlier and below the 20% growth the company saw in its chip revenues overall. Analysts expected $7.01 billion, according to data from Visible Alpha. Qualcomm said fiscal first quarter automotive chip revenue was $961 million while sales from “internet of things” chips – into which it also lumps PC chip sales – were $1.55 billion. A year earlier, automotive chip revenue was $598 million and internet of things revenue was $1.1 billion. Analysts had expected $905 million in automotive revenue and $1.40 billion in IoT revenue, according to data from Visible Alpha. For the just ended quarter, Qualcomm said overall chip revenue was $10.08 billion with licensing revenues at $1.54 billion. Analysts had expected $9.29 billion for chips and $1.54 billion for licensing. Bernstein Research last year estimated that Huawei’s licensing payments to Qualcomm accounted for about 10 cents to 15 cents per share of Qualcomm’s profits. But Qualcomm on Wednesday disclosed that it has secured license agreements with two other ******** smartphone firms. 7. Pontypridd boy, 13, diagnosed with condition Pontypridd boy, 13, diagnosed with condition Oscar Edwards & Daniel Heard BBC News Kyle Sieniawski is believed to be the youngest person in the *** living with motor neurone disease. The family of a boy living with motor neurone disease have said it was a “massive shock” for him to be diagnosed at the age of 13. Kyle Sieniawski, from Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, started to lose mobility in his left arm last year before experiencing other neurological symptoms. Almost a year after she first noticed the symptoms, Kyle’s mum told Radio Wales Breakfast that his conditions had deteriorated to a point where he can no longer feed himself. Motor neurone disease (MND) is most common in adults over 50 and Kyle is believed to be the youngest person in the *** with the condition. Kyle was diagnosed with MND on 17 January – almost a year after his mum Melanie first noticed symptoms. “He wasn’t walking straight and was using one arm to support the other,” she said. Kyle was initially taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Rhondda Cynon Taf for tests followed by an MRI scan. Doctors initially thought he had enterovirus which is an infection that can cause illness in babies, children, and teens. Family photo Kyle’s family have started a fundraising page to raise awareness about MND But his family became concerned when his condition began to deteriorate further. “In October his right arm started to become a bit shaky. By November he was struggling to walk up the stairs,” his mum said. Kyle’s aunt Heather thought it was MND after researching the symptoms, but it still came as a “massive shock”. “With the tears that have been spilled the last few months it’s been like a river,” said Heather. Family photo Kyle uses a VR headset to watch films and play games with his older brother as it does not require his hands Kyle needs support when eating and walking and has spent the past few weeks at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff. Heather said it was “unbelievable” he was so cheerful, which was having a positive impact on the rest of the family. “I don’t think a lot of children would react in the same way. He is an inspiration,” she said. The teenager spends his time playing games with his family including Connect Four, and has a VR headset that allows him to watch films hands-free. Family photo Kyle loves a game of Connect Four, but needs help with the counters as his arms have limited mobility His family said they felt “really positive” after discussions were held about a clinical trial which could slow down the disease. But they were left “devastated” after it was put on pause. The family said they felt there is “no hope” without the trial, according to Heather. “It will make a difference. I’m hoping because he is so young he has the energy to fight it,” she added. Heather said the response from the community had been “absolutely outstanding” with people setting up fundraisers “left, right and centre”. “One lady even offered a luxury caravan so the family can use to spend some time with Kyle. It’s been amazing. I can’t get over it,” she said. What is MND? MND is a relatively rare condition which is most common in people over 50, but adults of any age can be affected. A person’s lifetime risk of developing MND is one in 300, according to the MND Association. MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the *** at any one time. 9. Civilization 7: How To Increase Settlement Limit Civilization 7: How To Increase Settlement Limit Over time in Civilization VII, you’ll start to accumulate more and more settlements. You can get more settlements by using your own units, negotiating with other leaders, or taking settlements by force. However, the more settlements you acquire, the more at risk you are for exceeding your settlement limit. At the top of your screen, you’ll see a building icon next to the happiness icon. The building icon has a fraction next to it, and this tells you what your current settlement limit is (the right number) and how many settlements you currently own (the left number). While it’s possible to go over your settlement limit, this has fairly substantial consequences. So, to avoid that, you can simply increase your overall settlement limit in Civilization 7. How to increase settlement limit in Civilization 7 The settlement limit warning At the start of a playthrough in Civ 7, you’ll have a settlement limit of four. This is more than enough to get you through the first third of the Antiquity Age, as you’ll have your capital and at least a couple of additional settlements you founded through Settlers, Suzerainship, or war with other leaders. After a certain point, though, you will want to find ways to increase the limit so you can continue to add to your empire and expand your reach across the map. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many ways of increasing the limit manually. There are only two main ways to increase the settlement limit, and we’ll explain both of the methods below: Unlock new Technology or Civics The Feudalism Technology unlocks a +1 to settlement limit Researching specific Technologies or Civics can come with a bonus that increases your settlement limit. Usually, this is only a +1 to the limit, which might not help too much if you’re already several settlements over budget. However, the higher the limit, the better, as you always want to find ways to boost the maximum number of settlements you can have. To see if a Technology or Civic offers a boost to the settlement limit, carefully read the description of each one. A boost to the settlement limit is always indicated by the ****** and gold “Plus” icon that’s found in the description of a new Technology or Civic. While you can consistently research both Technologies and Civics throughout an age in Civ 7, using the Espionage Action to steal another leader’s Technologies is a great way to accumulate more of them. Espionage Actions… in action You can use this Espionage Action against any leader you’ve met by selecting their portrait in the top-right, scrolling down the list of actions, and selecting the one that can steal a Technology. This costs major Influence and runs the risk of you getting caught, but it’s usually worth the trouble. Get to the next Age The second major method of increasing your settlement limit is to progress to the next age in Civ 7. Every time you move on to the next age, your settlement limit is increased by four. So, if you move on from the Antiquity Age to the Exploration Age, you will see your limit increase from four to eight (if you didn’t manually increase the limit yourself). Moving to the next age in Civ 7 While this isn’t the best news for players playing on a longer game speed or higher difficulty, it’s the best way to massively boost your settlement limit. What happens if you exceed the Settlement Limit? Naturally, your expansion goals might be too lofty for your current settlement limit. Fortunately, you are technically able to acquire as many settlements as you want without the gaming stopping. However, there is one significant downside to maintaining an exceeded limit. For every one settlement you’re over your current limit, you will lose -5 Happiness in every single settlement you own. So, if you’re three settlements over the limit, that results in a -15 Happiness across the board. This could be extremely detrimental to your gameplay, as lower happiness levels can cause your citizens to riot and go into unrest. If a settlement goes into unrest, you need to fix it but you’re unable to produce anything in that settlement for over 10 turns. So, while it’s not a huge deal to be a couple of settlements over for a brief spell, you want to try and avoid acquiring too many settlements for long periods of time in Civ 7. text to use: There’s so much to learn and discover when you’re exploring the massive world of Civ 7. 12. Celtic destroy Dundee, storm clear at Scottish summit Celtic destroy Dundee, storm clear at Scottish summit Celtic have romped 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with 13 games remaining after a 6-0 demolition of Dundee at Parkhead. Midfielder Arne Engels scored with a penalty in the 18th minute on Wednesday night before striker Adam Idah fired in a second in first-half added time for his fourth goal in three games. Japan winger Daizen Maeda notched two goals in four minutes after the break and Engels produced a glorious fifth on 72 minutes before substitute Nicolas Kuhn completed the destruction. The crushing win demonstrated Celtic’s strength even though boss Brendan Rodgers was frustrated at failing to recruit a replacement for main striker Kyogo Furuhashi who moved to French club Rennes for a reported fee of $A20 million. The match was postponed on January 25 due to storm damage at Celtic Park in Glasgow but there was nothing wrong with the Hoops team who increased their lead over Old Firm rivals Rangers and are heavy odds-on to retain their title for a fourth successive time. It was a desperate night for Tony Docherty’s Dundee, who lost 6-0 at home to Hearts at the weekend. Celtic’s expected early pressure was relentless. Midfielder Reo Hatate and Portuguese winger Jota, who recently returned 18 months after leaving for spells in Saudi Arabia and then France, sent in crosses which were dealt with by Dundee keeper Trevor Carson. The visitors had a couple of forays forward which offered some hope but that dissipated when Celtic took the lead. Referee Colin Steven initially awarded a foul to Dundee when Mohamed Sylla tussled with Celtic defender Auston Trusty at a corner but was asked to check his pitchside monitor by VAR Alan Muir. After a long look Steven pointed to the spot with Engels firing low to Carson’s right-hand side for the lead and his sixth penalty in the league this season. Just before the break Dundee succumbed again, Carson saved an initial effort from Idah and then parried Jota’s drive before the former Norwich striker fired high into the net from eight yards. The second half was a straightforward drubbing. Jota showed some trickery coming in from the left before his right-footed cross to the back post was headed in by the unmarked Maeda. Then some entertaining play from Hatate and Jota ended with Engels sending Maeda down the right channel and his perfect lob from the edge of the box beat Carson and dipped under the bar. The Dundee keeper was beaten again when Engels curled a wonderful shot from 25 yards in off the bar before Kuhn delightfully lifted a shot from the edge of the box into the far corner to complete a fine evening’s work for the champions-elect. Among 2,164 guests aboard Radiance of the Seas, 89 reported being ill during its current voyage, along with two crew members, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Their main symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea. The health agency listed the causative agent as unknown. Radiance of the Seas sails into Cartagena, Colombia on April 18, 2007. Cruise ship medical facilities: What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey) The ship left for a week-long Caribbean cruise from Tampa, Florida on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper. Royal Caribbean increased disinfection and cleaning measures and isolated sick guests and crew, among other steps, the CDC said. “Enhanced measures have been implemented onboard in an abundance of caution to protect the health and comfort of all our guests and crew,” a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. The cases mark the sixth gastrointestinal illness outbreak on cruise ships that has met the CDC’s threshold for public notification so far this year. Those follow 18 outbreaks in 2024, most of which were caused by norovirus. The illness is often associated with cruise ships, though those constitute just 1% of all outbreaks reported. Dr. Dean Winslow, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, told USA TODAY last month that outbreaks typically happen in congregate settings, particularly where people are eating and drinking. Those include cruises, universities, nursing homes and “even hospitals,” he said. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville. You can reach him at *****@*****.tld. 18. Google is reportedly changing course on its diversity initiatives, too Google is reportedly changing course on its diversity initiatives, too Google is changing its tune around efforts to hire employees from historically underrepresented backgrounds, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. The company reportedly announced that it would “no longer set hiring targets to improve representation in its workforce.” The first hint that things might be changing at Google was a tweak to its parent company Alphabet’s annual report. A phrase that claimed Alphabet was “committed to making diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do and to growing a workforce that is representative of the users we serve” featured in previous years was removed. When reached for comment, Google provided the following statement: We’re committed to creating a workplace where all our employees can succeed and have equal opportunities, and over the last year we’ve been reviewing our programs designed to help us get there. We’ve updated our 10-k language to reflect this, and as a federal contractor, our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic. Even if diverse hiring is no longer a stated goal, Google still plans on supporting resource groups for underrepresented employees and opening offices in cities with diverse workforces, according to the report. It just doesn’t plan on having “aspirational goals” moving forward. Backing off of at least some of its diversity, equity and inclusion goals stands in contrast to the Google of five years ago. In 2020, CEO Sundar Pichai committed to “improve leadership representation of underrepresented groups by 30 percent by 2025,” among other changes meant to better racial equity at the company. Making this kind of change isn’t exactly unusual, however. Amazon is winding down some of its DEI programs, according to CNBC and Meta has completely eliminated its diversity hiring goals and the position of chief diversity officer at the company. Based on Google’s statement and justifications Meta made previously, US companies are worried about the current Supreme Court and the Trump Administration’s opinion of diversity, equity and inclusion. Eliminating programs that might displease them is simpler than inviting what could be a losing legal battle. Big Tech’s AI spending, Treasury yields plunge: Market Takeaways Big Tech’s AI spending, Treasury yields plunge: Market Takeaways US stocks (^GSPC, ^IXIC, ^DJI) closed higher as Nvidia (NVDA) shares rose over 5%. This is driven by continued artificial intelligence (AI) investments from Big Tech despite initial concerns about reduced capital expenditures (CapEx) spending. Yahoo Finance senior reporter Josh Schafer joins Asking for a Trend host Josh Lipton to note that major companies like Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) are increasing CapEx spending, benefiting Nvidia (NVDA). Additionally, the 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) dropped to its lowest level since mid-December, helping boost market sentiment, with sectors like real estate gaining. 21. Russia says US must make first step to improve ties Russia says US must make first step to improve ties The United States must make the first move in improving ties with Russia after years of failing to listen to the Kremlin and misguided policies intended to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Moscow, a senior Russian diplomat says. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov also said it was wrong to base a foreign policy on the need to “come to an agreement with the White House at any price.” Relations between Russia and the United States have plunged to lows not seen in decades over Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. But since the election and inauguration of Donald Trump, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has made a point of describing the US president as smart and pragmatic and said he would like to meet him soon. In a commentary on the Foreign Ministry website, Ryabkov said the Kremlin had long sought to be a partner with the West, “but no one was listening or, in theory, wanted to listen. “And that is because the underlying aim was to weaken the geopolitical rival to the maximum,” he said. Russia, he said, had regained “its lawful place in world geopolitics by frustrating the plans of Joe Biden’s administration … to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on Moscow in a hybrid war ‘to the last Ukrainian.'” “Against the background of this failed policy and with the change of administration, it is the United States that must take the first step in normalising relations on the basis of mutual respect and equal rights,” Ryabkov wrote. Ryabkov said Russia was “open to dialogue and ready to reach agreement through hard bargaining while taking account of realities on the ground … So it is up to D. Trump and his team to make a decision.” Putin has said any talks on ending the war in Ukraine must take account of the realities of Russia holding large chunks of Ukrainian territory. He has also questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as a negotiating partner, saying that Zelenskiy has remained in office beyond his mandate. Trump has pledged to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible and said he is ready to meet Putin. Russian officials have denied any direct contacts with the US about preparations for a phone call between the two leaders as a first step to an eventual meeting later this year. Two Russian sources with knowledge of the discussions told Reuters this week that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are seen by Russia as possible venues for a summit. 22. Harrison Ford Thinks Troy Baker ‘Did a Brilliant Job’ Playing Indy Harrison Ford Thinks Troy Baker ‘Did a Brilliant Job’ Playing Indy In December, MachineGames and Bethesda released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a critically acclaimed epic featuring the titular adventurer front and centre. For this spin around the whip, Indiana Jones was played by Troy Baker, one of the most instantly recognisable names in gaming. Harrison Ford has made it clear that he’s more than happy to pass the torch to Baker, and in the past, he has praised the actor for his replication of the character. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, the legendary actor once again showered Baker with adoration for his portrayal of Indiana Jones. Nothing But Good Things Indiana Jones and the Great Circle received positive reviews across the board when it was released on December 9. It looks great, plays better, and features the iconic tropes of the Indiana Jones series that are intensely familiar to fans of the franchise. In an interview that took place before the game was released, Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard revealed that he didn’t want Troy Baker to play Indiana Jones. He explained that the team cast a wide net when fielding auditions, but time and again, those vetting the ‘blind taste tests’ picked Troy Baker. Recently, Harrison Ford sat down to speak to the Wall Street Journal about his acting career – which is still going strong despite the performer being 82 years of age. Amid a deep conversation about the Indy franchise and Ford’s most recent work, including the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, the topic turned to Baker’s performance of Indiana Jones in the December release: You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent. He did a brilliant job, and it didn’t take AI to do it. With the mention of AI, Harrison Ford was talking about using ‘synthetic versions of famous actors’ to apply them to roles after they’ve passed on. This is something that, quite understandably, actors are wary of pursuing. Do you think Troy Baker did a good job with Indiana Jones? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum. 23. Big Tech’s massive AI CapEx just ‘the beginning’ Big Tech’s massive AI CapEx just ‘the beginning’ Substantial capital expenditure (CapEx) by Big Tech is shaping up to be a key theme of 2025 thus far. Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), for example, announced plans to expand its CapEx spending target to $75 billion. Futurum CEO Daniel Newman joins “Market Domination” to discuss CapEx spending this year, emphasizing that there’s little sign of slowing down, as companies are entering a new era of artificial intelligence (AI) in which they must invest in building infrastructure to support large-scale workloads. While some people thought the emergence of DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI model marked the end of Big Tech’s massive CapEx spending, Newman notes that “the people that are really in the know realize it’s the beginning.” “That’s why none of the forecasts, whether it’s been Meta (META), whether it’s been Microsoft (MSFT), whether it’s been Alphabet — all of them have really stood by their expectations to invest,” he adds. Newman highlights that, while ROI in AI is still developing, the key to success will lie in scaling AI applications to drive consumption. “I would estimate we’re at about 1% deployment of the potential of AI, and we have hundreds — if not thousands — of orders of magnitude more AI to do,” Newman says. 24. Google Gemini’s new model is the brainstorming AI partner you’ve been looking for Google Gemini’s new model is the brainstorming AI partner you’ve been looking for Google has added the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental to the Gemini app. The model combines speed with advanced reasoning for smarter AI interactions. The app update also brings the Gemini Flash Pro and Flash-Lite models to the app. Google has dropped a major upgrade to the Gemini app with the release of the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model, among others. This combines the speed of the original 2.0 model with improved reasoning abilities. So, it can think fast but will think things through before it speaks. For anyone who has ever wished their AI assistant could process more complex ideas without slowing its response time, this update is a promising step forward. Gemini 2.0 Flash was originally designed as a high-efficiency workhorse for those who wanted rapid AI responses without sacrificing too much in terms of accuracy. Earlier this year, Google updated it in AI Studio to enhance its ability to reason through tougher problems, calling it the Thinking Experimental. Now, it’s being made widely available in the Gemini app for everyday users. Whether you’re brainstorming a project, tackling a math problem, or just trying to figure out what to cook with the three random ingredients left in your fridge, Flash Thinking Experimental is ready to help. Beyond the Thinking Experimental, the Gemini app is getting additional models. The Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental is an even more powerful one, albeit a somewhat more cumbersome version of Gemini. It’s aimed at coding and handling complex prompts. It’s already been available in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Now, you can get it in the Gemini app, too, but only if you subscribe to Gemini Advanced. With a context window of two million tokens, this model can simultaneously digest and process massive amounts of information, making it ideal for research, programming, or rather ridiculously complicated questions. The model can also utilize other Google tools like Search if necessary. Lite speed Gemini is also augmenting its app with a slimmer model called Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite. This model is built to improve on its predecessor, 1.5 Flash. It retains the speed that made the original Flash models popular while performing better on quality benchmarks. In a real-world example, Google says it can generate relevant captions for around 40,000 unique photos for less than a dollar, making it a potentially fantastic resource for content creators on a budget. Beyond just making AI faster or more affordable, Google is pushing for broader accessibility by ensuring all these models support multimodal input. Currently, the AI only produces text-based output, but additional capabilities are expected in the coming months. That means users will eventually be able to interact with Gemini in more ways, whether through voice, images, or other formats. What makes all of this particularly significant is how AI models like Gemini 2.0 are shaping the way people interact with technology. AI is no longer just a tool that spits out basic answers; it’s evolving into something that can reason, assist in creative processes, and handle deeply complex requests. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. How people use the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model and other updates could show a glimpse into the future of AI-assisted thinking. It continues Google’s dream of incorporating Gemini into every aspect of your life by offering streamlined access to a relatively powerful yet lightweight AI model. Whether that means solving complex problems, generating code, or just having an AI that doesn’t freeze up when asked something a little tricky, it’s a step toward AI that feels less like a gimmick and more like a true assistant. With additional models catering to both high-performance and cost-conscious users, Google is likely hoping to have an answer for anyone’s AI requests.
