It’s the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Colonial Boulevard, a project that started in early 2021 and is expected to wrap up sometime this spring with the goal of improving the traffic flow in one of the most congested locations in Southwest Florida. On Wednesday (Feb. 5) the Florida Department of Transportation announced the following regarding its next steps to get to the finish line. Fort Myers Diverging Diamond: What to know Amid construction, traffic moves along the Colonial Boulevard corridor near the intersection of I-75 on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. A diverging diamond interchange is being constructed at the intersection to ease traffic congestion. The area is one of, if not the most congested traffic area in Fort Myers, Starting Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m., until Sunday, February 9 at approximately 8 a.m., crews will be working on the implementation of the Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) at Colonial Boulevard and Six Mile Cypress Parkway. This works includes paving, striping and signal work. During this time, Colonial Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Motorists traveling south on Ortiz Avenue or north on Six Mile Cypress Parkway will only be able to turn right onto Colonial Boulevard. The straight and left turn lanes will be closed during the implementation. When the CFI opens on Sunday morning, motorists traveling west on Colonial Boulevard and turning left onto Six Mile Cypress Parkway should expect to shift to the south side of Colonial Boulevard prior to the intersection. Motorists traveling east on Colonial Boulevard and turning left onto Ortiz Avenue should expect to shift to the north side of Colonial Boulevard prior to the intersection. Why CFI? Left turn crossover allows motorists to make the left turn before the intersection. Both the left turn and the through movements on Colonial Boulevard can proceed simultaneously, eliminating the need for the dedicated left turn signal at the main intersection, while providing for continuous flow of traffic. The crossovers will only occur on Colonial Boulevard. Left turns from Six Mile Cypress and Ortiz Avenue will operate like a conventional intersection. The White House DOGE team is a cost-cutting initiative created by President Trump to find ways to trim federal spending. Billionaire Elon Musk is in charge of it, categorized as a “special government employee.” Former NOAA officials told CBS News that current employees have been told to expect a 50% reduction in staff and budget cuts of 30%. Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who represents the state where the NOAA is headquartered, said his office is investigating DOGE’s work on the NOAA. The NOAA includes such agencies as the National Weather Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service. “Hearing reports that Musk’s cronies are targeting NOAA — infiltrating key systems & locking out career employees,” Hollen posted on X Tuesday. “NOAA is vital for weather forecasting, scientific research & more. Their critical work saves lives. This year’s commemorations come at a time of increased tensions, as the government pursues policies considered by some to be anti-Māori – including a bill which would reinterpret the 184-year treaty. On Wednesday, the eve of the holiday, hundreds of Māori protesters staged a silent demonstration by turning their backs on government ministers, signalling their dissatisfaction with the handling of Indigenous issues. Act party leader David Seymour – who is the architect of the controversial bill in question, known as the Treaty Principles Bill – also had his microphone taken away twice at the event. “We are sick of talking to ears that will not listen, and to minds that will not change,” Eru Kapa-Kingi – from the Toitū te Tiriti movement, which led the largest ever protest over Māori rights in 2024 – said. Luxon announced in December that he would not be at Waitangi – choosing instead to celebrate the day in the South Island with its largest tribe – or iwi in Māori – Ngāi Tahu. Iwi are groups of people who are joined by their shared ancestry and connection to nature. Ngāi Tahu has roughly 74,000 members, according to New Zealand’s last census. “Today is a day to reflect on where we have come from and look forward to where we are going together as a nation,” Luxon said in a video message from Akaroa. Nevertheless, the promise to protect indigenous land rights was repeatedly broken and the economic and cultural impacts of this, coupled with racial discrimination, has led to an inequality that is still being addressed today. It is in this context that the anniversary of the signing of the treaty has come an important day for discussions about the state of relations between Māori and the state. The minister who has been championing proposal – Act Party leader David Seymour – has attended, despite being asked not to by his hapū (sub-tribe). Proponents of the bill say it will promote equality among New Zealanders, but those against it say it is divisive and will further disadvantage Māori. Concern about the bill is so high that a national forum representing several iwi (Māori tribes) recently wrote a letter to King Charles – New Zealand’s head of state – asking for his help. “We seek your intervention to ensure that the government does not diminish the Crown’s honour,” the open letter reads. “Please remind them to respect their responsibility to act as an honourable partner on your behalf.” While it is unlikely the bill will pass – with Luxon and his majority National Party vowing to not back it at its second reading later this year – some of those who have participated in the public hearings about it say its very existence is an insult. The findings have implications for monitoring volcanoes prior to eruption, the researchers wrote in their paper, published Jan. 23 in the journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists have debated whether magma can persist in the upper crust under volcanoes for long periods or whether it moves into these shallow regions shortly before an eruption. The new study suggests that, at least in the Cascades, these magma reservoirs last thousands of years without causing an eruption. “Regardless of eruption frequency, we see large magma bodies beneath many volcanoes,” study first author Guanning Pang, a postdoctoral researcher in Earth sciences at Cornell University, said in a statement. “It appears that these magma bodies exist beneath volcanoes over their whole lifetime, not just during an active state.” The magma chambers discovered in the current study aren’t poised to cause disaster, however; all are only partially melted, without enough liquid portion to trigger an eruption. The new findings come courtesy of an upgrade to U.S. Geological Survey seismic monitoring stations in the Cascade Mountains, which allowed Pang and his co-authors to track the waves of distant earthquakes as they traveled beneath Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Lassen Peak and other nearby volcanoes. They noticed a consistent slowing of the earthquake wave velocity — sometimes by as much as 70% — under the volcanic summits. These slowdowns are too large to be explained by factors such as temperature, the researchers wrote. Waves move more slowly through liquid than they do through solids, so the findings suggest that large magma reservoirs lurk about 3 to 9 miles (5 to 15 kilometers) below the surface. They detected these reservoirs below Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Newberry Volcano, Crater Lake and Lassen Peak. Three Sisters and Mount Shasta did not show similar patterns, but that could have been due to a lack of seismic measurements, the researchers wrote. Inflation of the ground near Three Sisters in recent years does suggest there is magma moving in the area. Rather, they’re made of porous rock through which liquid magma moves. Only when the portion of liquid magma goes over 35% does the reservoir have the potential to erupt. Pang and his colleagues don’t have direct measurements of what percentage of the magma below these mountains is melted, but they calculated that it could range from 3% to 32%. Even if the melt were as high as 32%, it doesn’t necessarily presage an eruption, as this percentage could hold study for decades or decline, depending on local conditions. In either case, scientists do not see any evidence that these reservoirs are primed for an eruption, such as an uptick in earthquakes. The Cascades are particularly well monitored, but scientists have little hint of what’s going on below most volcanoes in the world, the researchers said. Similar methods that use seismic stations could help provide a better picture of what lies beneath volcanoes around the world. “If we had a better general understanding of where magma was, we could do a much better job of targeting and optimizing monitoring,” study senior author Geoffrey Abers, an Earth scientist at Cornell University, said in the statement. Vlad’s family have decided to reveal the harrowing details of his death, in Hampshire in May 2024, as a warning to others. The government said platforms must remove ******** suicide and self-harm content when new rules come into effect this year as part of the Online Safety Act. But the Samaritans charity says it does not believe the new law goes far enough. Warning: The following article contains upsetting content Vlad’s family tearfully spoke to the BBC to call for tighter restrictions on online platforms It was 02:40 on 7 May when Anna was jolted from her sleep by her teenage son Vlad screaming, “Mum! Call doctors!” He then shouted the name of a poison and the time he drank it. “I don’t know what the substance is,” Anna remembers, “but he’s changed his mind, and he came to me for help, to save him.” Vlad’s father, Graham Caisley, describes how their son must have staggered upstairs, before collapsing on his bedroom floor. “His hands were all clenched up and he was shaking,” Graham says. “It was just a state of panic.” “It was violent, it was sudden,” his mother adds, as she describes her son suffering multiple seizures. “Fitting and fighting for life – I can’t even start imagining the terror he went through.” Minutes later, Graham was on his knees carrying out CPR on his son, guided by paramedics on speakerphone. “I was just doing what I could to try and save my son’s life,” Graham says, with tears in his eyes. “It was just horrible.” Police body-worn camera footage reveals the chaos and emotional fallout as emergency responders tried and failed to save Vlad’s life. Detectives found a “suicide kit” in the family’s Southampton home, containing various poisons, pills and other things Vlad had bought after joining the chat group. “He’s researched and understood, and been told where to buy these things and what to buy,” says DS Chris Barrow from Hampshire Police. “So, without the website, Vlad wouldn’t have been able to put together this set of items and ingredients with which to take his own life.” Surrounded by bags of evidence found in Vlad’s home, DS Chris Barrow warned of the risk of chat group users being “groomed” into harming themselves After a happy childhood, Vlad had begun to withdraw in his early teens and was later diagnosed with autism, depression and anxiety. At the time of his death he was being treated by mental health professionals and had also developed a painful neurological condition. His family say they had seen his mental health improve as he had started seeing friends and travelling. But Vlad’s older sisters, Masha and Mia, say even though he was much better, he was still vulnerable when he took his own life. “Even if people using this forum struggle,” says Masha, “no-one knew my brother well enough to make any decisions about his life.” Mia, who has exchanged messages with moderators on the website, describes the site as an “echo chamber” which can “push people over the edge”. “There is almost definite grooming taking place,” she says. Vlad’s older sisters, Mia and Masha, with parents Anna and Graham, at his graveside in Southampton The BBC has spent years investigating the online forum that Vlad was a member of. It now has more than 50,000 members globally and Vlad’s family want it taken down or blocked. By coincidence, Vlad had ordered poison from a Ukrainian seller called Leonid Zakutenko, just before the BBC exposed him. But Vlad did not ******** that poison. The chemical he eventually ingested was ordered from Poland and had been mis-labelled, possibly to get through customs. A ‘path of death’ Following his death, the family read all Vlad’s posts and exchanges on the forum and describe how things appear to have “slowly escalated”. Vlad’s mother, Anna, says: “Then you have private chats and you are led down the path of death. Anyone can come across it. A child can come across it. The website is based in South America and hosted by a server in the United States. With different laws in different countries, online harm is notoriously difficult to police. Data from the Office of National Statistics shows suicides in England and Wales have risen by 10% over the last six years. Although it is still rare for under 25s to kill themselves by poisoning, the numbers of young people choosing to end their lives in this way are rising more quickly than in older people. A government spokesperson said, “Suicide devastates families. Intentionally encouraging suicide or the serious self-harm of another person is ********. “Once the Online Safety Act is fully implemented, platforms will have to remove this ******** suicide and self-harm content as well as stop children from seeing harmful suicide related material – even when it falls below the criminal threshold. “Companies should not wait for laws to come into force – they must take effective action to protect all users now.” Julie Bentley, CEO of Samaritans, says the charity’s calls for smaller sites to be treated as severely as larger platforms have been “completely ignored”. “Legal-but-harmful content needs to be strictly regulated for both adults and children,” she says, urging both the government and Ofcom to act “before it’s too late”. Mr Anderson said he presumed the emails were the result of a campaign organised by a WhatsApp group – because they were similarly worded – and claimed Ms Lattouf was “anti-Semitic”. He said on the evening of Monday, December 18 – the first day of her five scheduled shifts – he reviewed Ms Lattouf’s social media account. “I came to look at Ms Lattouf’s social media by way of searching her name later that evening on Monday and what I saw in that social media was what Ms Lattouf’s said on the Israel-Gaza conflict, advocacy for one particular perspective,” Mr Anderson told the court on Thursday. “I did see what I would consider anti-Semitic posts.” “You agreed with the complainants that Ms Lattouf’s criticism of Israel was anti-Semitic? True or untrue?” Ms Lattouf’s barrister Oshie Fagir asked. “I came to the view that … there was anti-Semitic content on her social feed, yes.” He told the court that Ms Lattouf had a “partisan view” and was an “advocate” for one side and was worried that she would express her views on Radio Sydney. “I had concerns that it was possible that Ms Lattouf would say similar statements while on air,” Mr Anderson said. Mr Anderson earlier told the court it was a “serious step” and “not to be taken lightly” to take a presenter or journalist off air. He was questioned by Mr Fagir about the decision not to take political reporter Laura Tingle from air after she told a writer’s festival that Australia was a “racist country”. Mr Anderson told the court that it was an “impartial statement based in fact”. Archaeologists Sifted Through an Ancient Lakebed—And Found 1.5-Million-Year-Old Tools Archaeologists Sifted Through an Ancient Lakebed—And Found 1.5-Million-Year-Old Tools A pilot project to scan the surface material of an Iraqi desert revealed 850 different artifacts from the Old and Middle Paleolithic eras. Included in the finds were ancient stone hand axes that date back to as far as 1.5 million years ago. The ancient lake that has long been home to all of these hand axes offers a peak into the early human activity of the region. A pilot project to investigate the archaeological surface material present in the Iraqi Western Desert recently discovered a bounty of finds from the Old and Middle Paleolithic era, including 850 different Stone Age artifacts. The find was enough for archaeologist Ella Egberts to declare the entire effort a “huge success,” according to a statement from Vrije University Brussel. The team discovered seven Paleolithic sites, all located in an area just six by 12 miles in size. Surface-level excavation zeroed in on one site that featured a dried-up lakebed with a dry riverbed crossing the landscape. Egberts collected over 850 artifacts from this spot, including hand axes that may be as old as 1.5 million years. “The other sites also deserve equally thorough systematic investigation,” Egberts said, “which will undoubtedly yield similar quantities of lithic material.” The stone tools were quite the pull, considering the archaeologists who discovered them simply sifted through the surface and didn’t conduct deep digs. Along with the ancient hand axes, the team also uncovered much more recent Levallois flakes. Considered more sophisticated than hand axes, the flakes are hand tools that date to between about 300,000 and 50,000 years ago. By examining the distribution of the sites and studying the area’s geomorphological history, Egberts and her team the team found clues of early humans using the landscape. Expanding research into a larger area, Egberts believes, would allow researchers to gain a fresh perspective on how human evolution and behavior progressed on the Arabian Peninsula. Egberts said that research in Iraq has been limited in recent decades due to the instability of the region. There weren’t issues in this particular effort, however, which was funded by the British Institute for the Study of Iraq. “Apart from the presence of numerous checkpoints, we were able to carry out our work without any problems,” she said. “The people are friendly, and it’s actually very nice to work in Iraq.” The Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritages has encouraged the team to continue, which Egberts plans to do. Once she’s able to secure the necessary funding, she hopes to reconstruct pictures of Pleistocene environmental changes and the early human presence and behavior in the Western Desert—hand axes and Levallois flakes included.
