Gaudreau Brothers Were Allegedly Drinking Before Fatal Bike ******, Attorney Wants Indictment Tossed Gaudreau Brothers Were Allegedly Drinking Before Fatal Bike ******, Attorney Wants Indictment Tossed Allegations about the final hours of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreaus’ lives have been revealed in a new court filing. In papers presented Tuesday, February 4 by the attorneys for Sean M. Higgins, who is charged with striking and killing the brothers with his Jeep Grand Cherokee in August 2024, Johnny allegedly had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.129% when he was killed, while Matthew’s concentration was 0.134%. Both numbers are higher than Higgins’ alleged level of 0.087%, which was above the legal driving limit of 0.08%. Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were riding bicycles on the side of a road in Oldmans Township, New Jersey the night before their sister Katie Gaudreau’s wedding when they were struck by Higgins. The brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. Why the Gaudreau Family Captured Our Hearts After the Tragic Deaths of Brothers Johnny and Matthew Katie has since rescheduled her wedding for July 11, 2025 in Philadelphia. Higgins was charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, two counts of second-degree reckless vehicular *********, a fourth-degree charge of tampering with physical evidence and a second-degree charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Sean Higgins Courtesy of Salem County Sheriff’s Office In January, Higgins pleaded not guilty to all charges. During Higgins’ court appearance on Tuesday — which was attended by Johnny and Matthew’s parents, Guy and Jane, their sisters, Katie and Kristen, and Katie’s fiancé, Devin Joyce — his attorneys indicated their desire to dismiss the indictment, which was handed down by a grand jury in December 2024. The attorneys did not allege that the Gaudreaus’ blood-alcohol levels played any role in the ******, but filed a motion to obtain additional information about how the blood-alcohol levels for the brothers and Higgins were collected. “We believe these filings are essential to ensuring that our client’s Constitutional rights are protected and that he is not being treated unfairly based upon the amount of publicity being garnered,” Higgins’ attorneys, Richard F. Klineburger III and Matthew V. Portella, said in a statement obtained by NJ.com. Meredith Gaudreau Celebrates Baby Shower With Columbus Blue Jackets WAGs In January, Higgins rejected a plea deal that would have seen him serve 35 years in prison. In Tuesday’s filing, Higgins’ attorneys argued the 35-year offer was higher than usual due to the fame and notoriety surrounding the case and the Gaudreau family. Additionally, the attorneys plan on filing a motion that will prevent some pieces of evidence from making it to trial, including the results from Higgins’ blood-alcohol test. During the hearing, Superior Court Judge Michael Silvanio set deadlines for the defense to file its motions and for the prosecution to file responses. Higgins’ next court date is scheduled for March 26. 5. Nissan CEO tells Honda counterpart he wants to scrap merger talks, source says Nissan CEO tells Honda counterpart he wants to scrap merger talks, source says By Maki Shiraki TOKYO (Reuters) – Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida met with his Honda counterpart Toshihiro Mibe on Thursday to say he wanted to end their merger talks after the larger automaker proposed making Nissan a subsidiary, said a source with knowledge of the matter. The Japanese automakers in December signed a memorandum of understanding to discuss an integration under a holding company to create the world’s No.3 automaker and compete in an increasingly tough industry. But the talks have been complicated by growing differences, multiple people familiar with the matter have told Reuters, and hit a wall after Honda said it wanted to turn Nissan into a subsidiary. “A consensus was reached (on Nissan’s side) that the talks cannot proceed under that proposal,” said the source with knowledge of the discussions, declining to be identified because the information is not public. Nissan will formalise the decision to withdraw from the MOU at a board meeting to be held before the company’s third-quarter earnings announcement next week, the source added. Honda’s current stance is that it would not accept an integration unless Nissan agrees to become a subsidiary, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. Honda is Japan’s second-largest car maker behind Toyota, and Nissan is the third-largest. Nissan and Honda spokespeople declined to comment on the status of their talks, repeating earlier statements that they aimed to finalise a future direction by mid-February. A scrapping of the talks raises questions about how Nissan, which is in the middle of a turnaround plan, can ride out its latest crisis without external help. Nissan has already announced plans to cut 9,000 workers and 20% of global capacity. Nissan’s shares were up 7.6% on Thursday afternoon while Honda’s were down 3.5%, reversing the direction of their respective moves a day earlier. 8. US to seize Venezuelan president’s plane held in Dominican Republic during Rubio visit US to seize Venezuelan president’s plane held in Dominican Republic during Rubio visit SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Trump administration plans to seize a second plane belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ’s government that is currently in the Dominican Republic. Secretary of State Marco Rubio intends to announce the seizure on Thursday during a visit to Santo Domingo, the last stop of his five nation tour of Central America, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter and a State Department document obtained by The Associated Press. Carrying out the seizure required that Rubio sign off on a foreign aid freeze waiver request to pay more than $230,000 in storage and maintenance fees. It also required approval by the Department of Justice. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. That waiver request, submitted early last week, has been approved and Rubio is expected to make the announcement at what the State Department has described publicly as only a “law enforcement engagement.” The plane is a Dassault Falcon 200 that has been used by Maduro and top aides, including his vice president and defense minister to travel the world, including Greece, Turkey, Russia and Cuba, in what the administration says are violations of U.S. sanctions, according to the document. The seizure of the plane comes just a week after President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, visited Caracas and met with Maduro to discuss the repatriation of Venezuelan nationals who illegally entered the United States. Grenell returned with six Americans who had been detained in Venezuela. The U.S. seized another of Maduro’s planes from the Dominican Republic in September 2024. At the time, the Justice Department said Maduro associates in late 2022 and early 2023 used a Caribbean-based shell company to hide their involvement in the purchase of the plane — a Dassault Falcon 900EX valued at $13 million — from a company in Florida. In a development related to Rubio’s first stop on the Central American tour, Panama, the State Department announced Thursday that the Panamanians had agreed to allow US warships to transit the Panama Canal without charge. Those fees had been one focus of President Donald Trump’s complaints about the canal, which he has said will retake from Panama unless it severely limits ******** influence in the area. “U.S. government vessels can now transit the Panama Canal without charge fees, saving the U.S. government millions of dollars a year,” the department said in a post on X. An agreement in principle to drop the fees had been reached when Rubio visited Panama o n Sunday, but it had not been finalized. ___ Source link #seize #Venezuelan #presidents #plane #held #Dominican #Republic #Rubio #visit Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  17. Google joins US firms abandoning diversity recruitment goals Google joins US firms abandoning diversity recruitment goals Google has become the latest big US firm to scrap its goals to recruit more workers from underrepresented groups, BBC News understands. The decision to abandon the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) recruitment targets comes after the company carried out an annual review of its corporate policies. The technology giant is also reviewing some of its other DEI programmes. US President Donald Trump and his allies have regularly attacked DEI policies. Since his return to the White House just over two weeks ago, Trump has ordered government agencies to eliminate such initiatives. “We’re committed to creating a workplace where all our employees can succeed and have equal opportunities,” a Google spokesperson said. “We’ve updated our [annual investor report] language to reflect this, and as a federal contractor our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic.” The story was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Between 2021 and 2024, Google’s investor reports stated its commitment to make “diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do”. That line is not in its latest report, which was published on Wednesday. In recent years, Google had been an outspoken supporter of DEI targets, particularly after the ******* of George Floyd in 2020 and the protests that followed his death. At the time, Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, set a five-year goal to increase the number of its leaders who came from underrepresented groups by 30%. According to the company, the number of ****** people in leadership roles almost doubled between 2020 and last year. Google also said it has seen increases of women and Latino people among its leadership. Google is the latest major company to make a U-turn on its diversity policies. Meta, Amazon, Pepsi, McDonald’s, Walmart and others have rolled back their DEI programmes. Apple has stood out by pushing back against this trend. Last month, the tech giant’s board asked investors to vote against a proposal to end its diversity policies. The proposal by conservative group, the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), called on the iPhone maker to abolish its DEI policies, saying they expose firms to “litigation, reputational and financial risks”. Last week, the retail chain Target was sued by a group of shareholders, led by the City of Riviera Beach Police Pension Fund in Florida, who said the firm had defrauded them by allegedly concealing the risks associated with its DEI policies. The lawsuit referred to a 2023 backlash over LGBTQ+ merchandise at its stores, which caused both its sales and its stock price to drop. The lawsuit came after Target announced it would end its DEI targets. In the latest example of the Trump administration’s disapproval of such policies, the US President last week speculated, without giving evidence, that DEI had led to an air ****** in Washington DC. The remarks, which came less than 24 hours after the ******, were in line with the White House’s efforts to undo such programmes. 18. Killer attacked after woman knocked back his advances Killer attacked after woman knocked back his advances A man previously jailed for manslaughter threw a woman into his ute intending to kill her after she knocked back his advances, a judge has heard. Robert Joseph Keene, 44, of Longreach, faced Brisbane District Court on Thursday having pleaded guilty to one count each of assault and armed assault causing bodily harm. Chief Judge Brian Devereaux heard Keene had been jailed in Tasmania in 2011 after being found guilty of bashing to death his housemate John Douglas Wilson. Crown prosecutor Sam Poplawski said Keene had repeatedly attacked a 26-year-old female neighbour at Loganlea, south of Brisbane on February 15, 2022 after she rejected his attempt to start a relationship. The assaults culminated in Keene lifting the woman by the back of her neck and throwing her into the back of his ute, lacerating her leg as he closed the tailgate. “When asked by police why he put the victim in the back of the ute, (Keene) said he was ‘probably going to knock her’, which he clarified meant to kill her,” Mr Poplawski said. “He decided against doing so, which he seemingly regretted at the time of the police interview.” Judge Devereaux heard Keene had earlier entered the woman’s home and started verbally abusing her before punching her four times in the head. The woman then went to Keene’s home and started hitting his car with a golf club. Keene invited the woman to hit him with the club, which she did, breaking off the clubhead in his hand. “He disarmed the victim and repeatedly struck her (with the club) on the arms and legs,” Mr Poplawski said. Neighbours told Keene to stop but he grabbed the woman and threw her in the ute. The woman was able to leave the scene after several people called police and her leg injury was later treated with sutures. Mr Poplawski said Keene had a history of assaulting police, correctional services, a young female shop assistant and an elderly couple in Queensland. “(Keene) has a propensity for violence over a large span of time that this offending is just a continuing of,” Mr Poplawski said. Defence barrister Joshua Fenton said Keene was removed from his parents at a young age and suffered abuse while in institutional care. “He suffers abnormality short of insanity … he has been diagnosed with complex PTSD. He was prescribed anti-psychotic medication,” Mr Fenton said. Judge Devereaux told Keene he had committed serious violent offences while unprovoked. “Your conduct was worryingly violent. Hitting her with the (golf club) was bad enough. When people saw what was happening, you threw the victim into your ute,” the judge said. “It was demeaning. It would have been absolutely terrifying.” Keene was sentenced to two-and-a-half years’ imprisonment and was ordered to be released on parole immediately due to his 417 days on remand. Judge Devereaux also imposed a six-month suspended sentence and told Keene he would have a return to prison “hanging over your head” if he reoffended in the next two years. 19. A longtime Fairview Heights restaurant abruptly closes. Here’s what we know A longtime Fairview Heights restaurant abruptly closes. Here’s what we know TGI Fridays permanently closed this week after 28 years in business at 6900 N. Illinois St., according to signage on the restaurant’s doors. Calls to the location were not answered. TGI Fridays at 6900 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights The shuttering of the Fairview Heights restaurant follows other recent closings. TGI Fridays filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Nov. 2. Since the filing, the company closed 30 locations around the U.S., according to a Jan. 30 report posted on restaurantbusinessonline.com. The same source reported on Feb. 3 that the company sold 19 additional restaurants as part of the bankruptcy proceedings, some of them to existing franchisees. A Nov. 2 release issued by the company stated that TGI Fridays Franchisor LLC, which includes 56 franchisees in 41 countries, was not included in the Chapter 11 process since those locations are independently owned. It is not yet clear if the Fairview Heights closing is a direct result of the bankruptcy. The BND has not yet received a response to an inquiry sent to TGI Fridays media relations. TGI Fridays in Fairview Heights first opened on Jan. 20, 1997, and was situated inside a Ramada Inn that once stood at 6900 N. Illinois St. A BND report from that time stated that the ground floor of the Ramada Inn was renovated to accommodate the metro-east’s first location, which took up 6,500 square feet. In 2014, the building was demolished and replaced with a new 8,800-square-foot TGI Fridays restaurant that reopened on March 2, 2015. The property is currently owned by Nilkanth Inc. of Bowling Green, Kentucky, according to St. Clair County tax records. 22. Civil servants could face sack if they do not save taxpayer cash Civil servants could face sack if they do not save taxpayer cash Top civil servants have been told they could face the sack if they do not save taxpayers money under rules announced by the government. Senior leaders will be held personally responsible for achieving savings in their departments as part of reforms to how the Civil Service manages performance. Under the changes those who do well could be rewarded but those who do not face dismissal. It is part of an effort by Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden to create a more “agile and modern” state. He said the public “must be confident we are spending every pound of their money well”. “It is vital that senior leaders are not just encouraged, but held responsible for this,” McFadden said. “We need them to build productive and high performing teams, to deliver on our plan to put more money in people’s pockets, get the NHS back on its feet and rebuild Britain. “We will introduce new checks to identify and tackle poor performance where we find it, and to recognise the good work of senior leaders across the civil service.” As part of a spending review due to conclude in June, government departments have been told to find efficiency savings worth 5% of their budgets. Back in December a government source said this could see 10,000 jobs cut. Other changes introduced in the new performance policy published by the Cabinet Office on Thursday include measures to identify poor performance. McFadden is not the first Cabinet Office minister to attempt to improve performance in the Civil Service. Conservative paymaster general John Glen said high performance in Whitehall was not “recognised, rewarded or incentivised properly”, and suggested linking civil service pay to performance. He also warned he would crack down on poor performance, saying it was “all too easy for leaders to let people move to another team, to let the poor performer become someone else’s problem”. 23. Donald Trump’s tariff wars could dampen *********** firms’ optimism in 2025 Donald Trump’s tariff wars could dampen *********** firms’ optimism in 2025 *********** businesses have taken an optimistic view for the next 12 months, boosted by the prospects of interest rate cuts, but it’s too early to tell how Donald Trump’s tariff wars could dampen conditions. National Australia Bank’s December quarter business survey revealed there had been a sharp drop in the share of firms expecting inflation in the medium term (three to five years) to hit 3.5 per cent or more. About 30 per cent of businesses surveyed now expect medium-term inflation to be about 2.5 per cent, within the Reserve Bank’s 2 per cent to 3 per cent target range. This was up from the 20 per cent recorded in the September quarter. “This aligns with an improving 12 month outlook across other survey measures, and continued easing across cost measures,” NAB said on Thursday. “Expected business conditions in the next 12 months . . . improved, possibly boosted by the prospect of rate cuts, recovering consumer demand and easing costs growth over 2025.” With the survey conducted between mid-November and early December, CreditorWatch Ivan Colhoun said it was too soon for it to reflect any impacts of US President Donald Trump’s recent tariff news. While Trump has agreed to hold off on imposing 25 per cent taxes on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, China hasn’t been so lucky, with all ******** imports to the US now attracting a new 10 per cent tax. “I’d expect that it is too early for this survey . . . to reflect much in the way of expectations let alone actuality from recent Trump tariff announcements,” he said. “Interestingly, while current and near-term expected conditions have been easing, firms’ expectations about the next twelve months have remained pretty solid and improved this quarter.” NAB said business conditions held steady in the last three months of 2024 and while confidence made a slight recovery, it remained in negative territory.
