Being an early adopter has its adventures, and the newly released Blackwell series is no exception. The number of users who experienced the ****** screen issue extended to Youtubers who reported on this matter. Judging by the number of problems and stopgap solutions, the issue is likely related to the latest driver. Interestingly, some RTX 40-series (Ada Lovelace) GPU users reported the same issue involving the GeForce Game Ready 572.16 WHQL driver. A hotfix and explanation will likely be released, but for now, using the DDU and switching to PCIe 4.0 in the BIOS seems to be one of the better mitigation solutions. These issues also extended to previous-generation GPUs, so narrowing this issue is challenging. Acquiring an RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 is a strenuous affair because of limited availability, hiked prices, and scalpers, so we feel for owners experiencing this pesky issue. Newegg had previously replied to a tweet that tariffs were the reason for the price hikes. However, the company has since deleted the tweet and another tweet that said its Blackwell GPUs came from China. X user Jordan Grussling asked the retailer, “Did the pricing go up on 5080s?” In a quick reply that has since been deleted, Newegg wrote, “Yeah, tariffs.” The U.S. retailer later provided a lengthier response, stating: “To add clarity, some graphics card prices have increased due to a number of factors that are, unfortunately, out of our control. We know the situation has been confusing and frustrating, but it’s important to know we are doing everything in our power to bring stability to the situation. Additionally, we are also building a new drawing system for hot items, which we will provide more details on when available. The Gigabyte Aorus Master RTX 5080 also experienced a 13% price hike, with the GPU now going for $1,479.99 from its original $1,299.99 price. We’ve also seen similar price hikes across RTX 5090 GPUs. Unfortunately, these price hikes are disproportionately affecting gamers and enthusiasts. They are likely caused by a lack of supply on Nvidia’s side, some manufacturers resorting to directly selling to their customers to stop scalpers, global and local geopolitics, and plain old greed. The Google Pixel 8A and Samsung Galaxy A55 5G both offer features once reserved for premium devices, like high refresh rates and multiple cameras. It’s impossible to know exactly what to expect from Apple until the company makes an announcement. Based on predictions and reports from Bloomberg, MacRumors and the plugged-in TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, along with other leaks and Apple’s product launch history, here’s what we’d expect from Apple’s next budget iPhone. Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment regarding a future iPhone SE when this story was originally published. iPhone SE 4 may launch in early 2025 There has been a lot of back-and-forth about the iPhone SE 4’s launch timing in recent years. But an August report from the often-accurate Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests that a new iPhone SE could debut in the beginning of 2025. That suggests it may arrive in the first quarter, which would line up with Apple’s previous iPhone SE release dates. The first and third generation models, for example, both launched in March. The analyst Kuo also reported in October that mass production of the new iPhone SE would begin in December 2024, further indication that an early 2025 release may be in store for Apple’s next tiny phone. The reports come after rumors and speculation about the iPhone SE’s existence have been uncertain over the last several years. In 2019, Kuo said Apple was working on an iPhone SE with a full-screen design similar to the iPhone XR, as MacRumors reported at the time. It will likely have a new processor and Apple Intelligence Apple/ Zooey Liao/ CNET The iPhone SE typically has the same processor as Apple’s most recent flagship iPhone. For example, the 2022 iPhone SE has the same chip as the iPhone 13, which launched in September 2021. Since Apple’s newest mobile chip is usually the iPhone SE’s standout feature, it’s hard to imagine Apple straying from that pattern. But that’s more important than ever now that Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of new AI features, is dependent on the company’s latest chips. The iPhone 16 family and last year’s Pro models are the only iPhones capable of running these features for now. But based on Apple’s history and Bloomberg’s report, which says the iPhone SE 4 will support Apple Intelligence, it looks like that could change in the coming months. Apple Intelligence includes new AI-powered features such as the ability to rewrite, summarize and proofread text, a new version of Siri that’s better at understanding words even when you fumble, the ability to erase objects in photos, and notification and message summaries, among other features. The first wave of Apple Intelligence arrived in Apple’s iOS 18.1 update, while more features — such as the ability to generate custom emoji — will come later in iOS 18.2. Otherwise, the next iPhone SE could have an Apple-made 5G chip, according to Kuo. Still, it’s hard to know if that prediction still applies since he later revised his estimate to say this device was likely an engineering prototype to test that 5G chip. MacRumors also reports that the iPhone SE 4 will have an Apple-made 5G modem. An iPhone 14-like design with an OLED screen If the company is working on another iPhone SE, it will likely have a 6.1-inch screen similar to Apple’s modern flagship phones. The current iPhone SE, by comparison, has a 4.7-inch screen with thick borders at the top and chin, much like the iPhone 8. In particular, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to look a lot like the iPhone 14, which Apple launched in 2022. A MacRumors article reported in September 2023 that the iPhone SE 4 will have a modified version of the iPhone 14’s chassis and reiterated that point again in November. Bloomberg’s report also suggests the iPhone SE 4 will resemble Apple’s two-year-old flagship. It’s not just the design that’s expected to get an upgrade; the display will see improvements too. Multiple reports, including those from Kuo, MacRumors, Bloomberg, The Elec and Nikkei Asia, suggest the next iPhone SE will have an OLED screen instead of LCD. That’s a big deal because OLED typically displays richer contrast and deeper *******, and these types of screens are consistent across the rest of Apple’s iPhone lineup. If the blog’s previous reports about the iPhone SE 4 following in the iPhone 14’s footsteps prove to be accurate, a larger battery would be necessary to power its larger screen. Apple doesn’t disclose the battery capacities for its phones, but it says the iPhone 14 should get five extra hours of video playback compared to the third-generation iPhone SE. Between the new chip and ******* battery that we’re expecting to find in the next iPhone SE, it sounds like Apple’s next affordable iPhone could see some pretty significant gains in battery life. Goodbye Touch ID, hello Face ID Fans of Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor may be out of luck. MacRumors reports that the next iPhone SE will have Face ID, like other modern iPhones, instead of Apple’s fingerprint sensor. That conflicts with Kuo’s report from 2019, which indicated that the next iPhone SE would have a smaller notch area without Face ID and Touch ID embedded in the power button. But since Kuo’s report is about five years old, that information may be outdated. It may get a 48MP camera, USB-C and Action button Kevin Heinz/CNET Apple’s next wallet-friendly iPhone may have a few things in common with Apple’s newer iPhones. Since Apple switched to USB-C starting with the iPhone 15 lineup to comply with new European rules, it seems likely that the iPhone SE 4 could ditch the Lightning connector as well. MacRumors also claims the iPhone SE 4 will have USB-C. The more surprising note in MacRumors’ story is that the iPhone SE 4 could gain the Action button, which is a new key for programming shortcuts that’s currently exclusive to the iPhone 16 family, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. If true, it would be another sign that Apple wants to make the Action button standard across the iPhone lineup, coming after it brought the Action button to the standard models this year. MacRumors also reports that a 48-megapixel single camera could be in store for the next iPhone SE. That would signal another similarity it could share with the iPhone 15 and 16, which also have 48-megapixel main cameras. If the report is accurate, the iPhone SE will only have one rear camera, unlike Apple’s more expensive phones. The regular iPhone 15 has wide and ultra-wide cameras, while the Pro versions have wide, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. But Apple introduced the “Fusion” camera on this year’s regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which it says enables a 2x optical quality zoom despite lacking a dedicated telephoto lens. While reports don’t specify whether the iPhone SE 4 will have this camera, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple implemented it to compensate for the iPhone SE’s single camera setup. If the rumors are true, the fourth-generation iPhone SE could bring Apple’s tiny, budget iPhone up to date with the rest of Apple’s lineup. People pay for the special stamp to appear on their envelopes Nick Gibbs, who runs the scheme alongside volunteers, said: “People just love this product. In a world full of trouble, this is an oasis of love and affection. “It is that moment when you can express how you feel about somebody else and that’s wonderful.” All the money paid for the cards goes back into supporting the community, including funding a major refurbishment of the Old School building. (AP) — After 24 years of guiding whitewater trips on the Nolichucky River Gorge for other companies, Patrick Mannion finally received a permit last year to operate his own outfitter business. But following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, he doesn’t know if Osprey Whitewater will be around for a second year. Flooding driven by the September hurricane cut the fall rafting season short and devastated this mountainous region on the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Miles of railroad tracks and entire houses were thrown into the river. Some outfitters lost buildings and equipment. Guides lost their homes. Some lost friends. The river itself changed dramatically. But with the spring season set to open next month, the biggest problem outfitters are facing is silence from the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the river corridor and issues their permits to operate. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “It’s been an interesting, interesting first season,” said Mannion, who reckons he has run the scenic 8-mile (12.8-kilometer) gorge more than 3,500 times. “It was certainly not the end of our first season that we were hoping for.” Whitewater rafting on the Nolichucky is a keystone of the local outdoor tourism industry, which helped generate over $18 million in visitor spending in Tennessee’s Unicoi County in 2022, according to a study. While most rafting rivers in the Southeast are dam-controlled, the upper Nolichucky runs freely, making every trip a different experience and attracting boaters who seek adventure. It also feels particularly remote, flowing through a deep gorge surrounded by national forests with the occasional CSX train the only sign of human activity for miles. “There’s no cellphone service. …It’s rugged. It’s wild and scenic It’s the steepest, the deepest and the most remote river corridor that’s commercially rafted in the southeastern United States,” said Mannion, who calls the river “my therapy.” “Our future is uncertain” Matt Moses owns USA Raft, the largest and oldest outfitter on the river. The flood destroyed much of his business, taking out campgrounds, lodging, a day recreation area, vehicles and equipment. He is determined to rebuild, but the Forest Service is not making that easy. Moses said that typically this is the time of year that big groups book with companies like his. He has people answering phones, but they are not taking reservations. “We tell them that our future is uncertain,” he said. “I’m not taking anybody’s money. I’ve got enough refunds I’m trying to figure out.” The Forest Service has temporarily closed the boat ramps in Poplar, North Carolina; and Erwin, Tennessee, where outfitters put in and take out rafts. CSX Transportation is using them as access points as it attempts to rebuild miles of railroad tracks lost to the flood. And that is yet another worry for the whitewater community. A lawsuit over rebuilding the train tracks Mannion supports repairing the train tracks but has been disturbed by the sight of heavy equipment removing rock, sand and gravel from the riverbed to rebuild the railbed and embankment. A lawsuit filed in November by the nonprofit groups American Whitewater and American Rivers accuses federal regulators of failing to enforce the Clean Water Act and other laws, and failing to monitor the work that is being done. In the meantime, boaters have taken it on themselves to document the destruction, kayaking through the gorge in frigid winter conditions to shoot photos and videos from spots not visible from any road or trail. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers referenced video it had received of “potentially unauthorized work being conducted in the Nolichucky River” in December, when it ordered a temporary halt to the reconstruction. The Corps later issued permits that Southern Environmental Law Center attorney Patrick Hunter says are insufficient to protect the river. A Jan. 21 letter from Hunter to the Corps suggests that CSX’s plan to use material from the Nolichucky gorge as reconstruction material, rather than trucking it in from a quarry, will have “significant consequences for scenery, water quality, wildlife habitat, protected species, flood risk, recreation, and the navigability of the river.” Mannion said it is perplexing that he had to go through a long, arduous process to get a permit to run rafting trips on the Nolichucky from the Forest Service while he believes CSX has not been held to the same standard. “I think in the grand scheme of things, we just want to make sure that the I’s are being dotted, the T’s are being crossed, and that, in this remote corridor, that there is just a little bit of oversight, because I don’t think that this would be happening if this was in downtown Erwin,” he said. For his part, CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs has said they are working with the Corps to oversee the project, and “I believe we’re going to leave the territory better than we found it.” “The whitewater has gotten better” The flooding moved huge boulders and made big changes to the river channel, but after running it many times since September, outfitters are excited. “The whitewater has gotten better,” said Brannon Schmidt, of Blue Ridge Paddling. He is considering raising the age limit on trips “because it has stepped up a bit in adventure.” Schmidt and his brother Mason Schmidt spent five years working to get a permit for the Nolichucky before they were able to run their first trips there last year. They have a large building with a taphouse that was heavily damaged by the flooding, but they managed to save a majority of their equipment. “This next season we were definitely planning on going all out. You know, having a big springboard year. Yeah, the flood definitely is derailing that for us,” Brannon Schmidt said. There is no timeline for when the Forest Service will open the river up to commercial rafting, Forest Service spokesperson Sheila Holifield said in an email to The Associated Press. “Safety of rafters and our commercial outfitter partners is one of our top priorities while we continue working to identify any hazards left by Helene in the Nolichucky, and we continue to advise the public to stay off the river for their own safety,” Holifield wrote. The uncertainty around permits and concerns about what affect the CSX work will have on the river are making it hard to plan for the future, Schmidt said. “It’s hard to talk about financial decisions like where your money’s going to go to rebuild,” he said. “You know, if we are going to rebuild? Experts warn of threat to global health as Trump freezes USAID Experts warn of threat to global health as Trump freezes USAID Philippa Roxby, Smitha Mundasad & Dominic Hughes BBC News AFP Experts in global health have been expressing their dismay and concern over the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which distributes tens of billions of dollars’ worth of overseas aid every year. President Donald Trump’s administration has announced huge cuts to the agency’s workforce and the immediate suspension of almost all of its aid programmes. The US government has announced a 90-day freeze on funding for aid projects while it undertakes a “review” to ensure they align with President Trump’s priorities. Trump is a long-term critic of overseas spending and has said it needs to be brought into line with his “America First” strategy. The administration has targeted USAID in particular, saying the agency’s spending is totally unexplainable and has singled out certain projects as examples of how the agency is, in its view, wasting taxpayers’ money. Health experts, on the other hand, have warned of the spread of disease, as well as delays to the development of vaccines and new treatments as a result of the cuts. As well as directly running many health programmes, USAID funds other organisations to carry out work on its behalf, and the freeze in funding has caused confusion among these groups too. Waivers for the funding freeze have been issued for some humanitarian programmes, but the announcement has already caused widespread disruption to services. Dr Tom Wingfield, an expert in tuberculosis (TB) and social medicine at the ***’s Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, told the BBC it is hard to underplay the impact of the decision to dismantle USAID. “People don’t appreciate the extent and reach of USAID. It goes towards under-nutrition, hygiene, toilets, access to clean water, which all have a massive impact on TB and diarrhoeal diseases. “Diseases don’t respect borders – that’s even more the case where we have climate change and mass movement of people. Infectious diseases will spread.” Dr Wingfield says TB kills 1.3 million people per year and makes a further 10 million people ill. But four out of 10 people never receive any care and can therefore transmit the disease, he said. “Whether it’s a research project or a clinic affected, then we run risk of further transmission. “People will die directly because of cuts in US funding.” It’s not just TB clinics that are at risk, but those providing care for people living with ****. Much of this work is done by non-governmental organisations, NGOs, who provide vital anti-retroviral medicines which can suppress the amount of **** in the blood to undetectable levels, which helps prevent ******* transmission to other people. Dr Wingfield says if treatment is disrupted, there could be serious problems. “People with controlled ****, if they miss meds, the virus in their blood increases and there’s a risk of onwards transmission. “There is a risk of undoing all the progress to date.” ‘Catastrophic impact’ Frontline AIDS is a *** and South Africa-based organisation that works with 60 partners across 100 countries. More than 20 of their partners have said they are affected by the US foreign aid freeze. Communication around the freeze and subsequent waiver has caused “deep confusion”, the organisation told the BBC. Many partners have had to suspend **** care, treatment and prevention to vulnerable children and adults and lay off staff, it said. “The majority remain in limbo and this is having a catastrophic impact on communities and organisations,” said John Plastow, Executive Director for Frontline AIDS. It reported that one organisation in Uganda has said it will run out of its **** testing kits, TB medicines and condoms in a month, which are mostly funded by USAID’s President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief programme. Prof Peter Taylor, director of international development studies at Sussex University, said one of the biggest issues with the freeze was an erosion of trust. “Stopping things suddenly undermines people’s trust. People are bewildered and angry,” he said. “The undermining of basic trust is the real cost and that is being magnified in many situations around the world. “This is so damaging to the US global reputation.” USAID also provides funding for crucial international clinical drug trials, which Prof Thomas Jaki, leader of the MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge, fears might now also be vulnerable. “Unfortunately, there are quite a number of trials that are immediately affected by the USAID freeze – both in terms of running trials but also trials that are in set-up and are planned to start soon.” He said he was “convinced” the US funding freeze “will detrimentally impact treatment development”, to an extent where exciting new treatments are delayed by years or even discarded. “Clearly the impact in areas such as malaria and **** will be particularly high as a notable portion of research in these areas is funded via this route,” Prof Jaki said. Prof Rosa Freedman, professor of international law, conflict and global development at the University of Reading, said USAID provides up to 40% of the world’s development aid, which covers health as well as education and developing economic prosperity. Jin’s story reached its natural conclusion—trying to stretch it further would only diminish what made it special in the first place. Besides, remember the skepticism when Rockstar announced Arthur Morgan would replace John Marston as the protagonist in Red Dead Redemption 2? That worked out pretty well, didn’t it? Speaking to reporters at the presidential palace, new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the 24-member cabinet would prioritise financial reforms, reconstruction and the implementation of a United Nations resolution seen as a cornerstone to stability on the Lebanese border with Israel. The announcement came after more than three weeks of talks with rival political parties in Lebanon – where government posts are parcelled out according to sect – and days of deadlock over the Shi’ite ******* ministers, usually named by Iran-backed Hezbollah and its Shi’ite ally Amal. But Washington has pushed back against Hezbollah’s sway in any new government. US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus said on Friday that the US considered Hezbollah’s involvement in the new cabinet a “red line” and thanked Israel for dealing devastating blows to the group, in a controversial statement that sparked protests in Lebanon. Ultimately, Hezbollah’s ally Amal – which is headed by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri – was allowed to choose four of the new cabinet’s members, including Finance Minister Yassin Jaber, and give its nod of approval to a fifth. That prevents Hezbollah and its allies from wielding a “blocking third” in the government, where a two-thirds vote is needed to pass some decisions. The US embassy in Lebanon welcomed the cabinet announcement, saying it hoped it would rebuild Lebanon’s state institutions and implement needed reforms. The Christian Lebanese Forces Party, which is fiercely opposed to Hezbollah and has not been part of a cabinet in more than five years, also picked four ministers, including Foreign Affairs Minister Youssef Raji and Energy Minister Joseph Saddi. Salam said he hoped the politically diverse cabinet would “work in harmony”. “This government will seek to restore confidence between citizens and the state, between Lebanon and its Arab surroundings, and between Lebanon and the international community,” he said. Lebanon has been hit hard over the last half-decade by a financial collapse that impoverished large parts of the population, a cataclysmic explosion at the Beirut port and a more than year-long war between Israel and Hezbollah that destroyed swathes of the country. Forming a cabinet was seen as an essential step to undertaking reforms that could open the door to a financing plan under the International Monetary Fund and accessing support from key Gulf countries to help rebuild destroyed areas. The United Nations said the government formation “heralds a new and brighter chapter for Lebanon”, and said it hoped to work with the new cabinet on reforms and implementing UN Security Council resolution 1701, which calls for disarming armed groups in Lebanon – seen as a reference to Hezbollah. Salam said on Saturday the new cabinet would prioritise implementing that resolution, along with the ceasefire deal that ended the last year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. That deal stipulates that Israeli troops should leave southern Lebanon, Hezbollah should pull out its fighters and arms and the Lebanese army should deploy in the area by February 18. The cabinet is now charged with drafting a policy statement – a broad outline of the upcoming government’s approach and priorities – and will then need a vote of confidence from Lebanon’s parliament to be fully empowered. Still, consumer CPUs and SSD controllers typically stay below the limit, so technically, ******** customers could get them. If the report is correct, TSMC’s restrictions are stricter than those proposed by the U.S. government. For obvious reasons, big companies like AMD, Apple, Intel, MediaTek, Silicon Motion, and Phison are expected to receive licenses, even for processors surpassing 30 billion transistors. However, the restrictions will impact AMD, Intel, and Nvidia, which now require export licenses for mainstream GPUs sold to China, even if those GPUs were previously unrestricted. The U.S. government’s primary goal is to control AI chip shipments to China, Iran, and Russia and close loopholes that allow blacklisted firms to obtain high-performance AI processors through intermediaries.
