  2. These games are most likely to appear in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct These games are most likely to appear in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct z2g1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago ) The exclusive model is dead if you haven’t noticed. That’s why ps games are coming out on pc and sometimes Xbox (the show for example). Exclusive model Has been failing since the ps4. In the near future real consoles will have even less exclusives, and the war will shift from console sales to who makes the better games. Personally I’m for it bc gamers ont get anything out of a console selling a lot, but they def win when content competition heats up. Now ps players can buy Xbox games just like pc players – that’s more potential sales and attachment. It will be a battle or content sales mark my words. The real reason PlayStation sells more is simply brand preference. It’s the coca-cola of consoles. If you break down the top selling/grossing games now and of all time, none of them are exclusives. It’s games like COD, GTA, Fortnite. That’s why there’s a big push for live service games. If you ask why PlayStation sells more, people will say games, but analytics show that’s not really true. Kinda like how people claim to hate micro transactions, but yet MTs continually make millions of dollars per release – completely optional, non-mandatory MTs mind you. In regards to switch specifically, it had no direct competition. It’s a portable, not a true console. It can’t keep pace with a console or pc from a technical standpoint. And Nintendo is the Disney of video games. It’s not exclusives per se that people want, it’ just the characters. Mario doing this or that. That demo could care less about exclusivity. That’s just the only place they can get them. Nintendo would sell tons more if they opened those releases up and people would still buy switches bc as hardware it fits in an unoccupied space. Reality and perception are two different things. Source link #games #Nintendo #Switch #Direct Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Texas Cop Hires 2 Men to Kill Estranged Wife “Disgusted” by His ******* Desires Texas Cop Hires 2 Men to Kill Estranged Wife “Disgusted” by His ******* Desires A 7-year-old boy bravely took the stand after someone murdered his mother, a moment Kelly Siegler won’t soon forget. In Season 2, Episode 3 of Prosecuting Evil with Kelly Siegler, the prosecutor and investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas recalled the 1994 ********* of Farah Fratta, a “vivacious” mother of three gunned down in the garage of her Humble-area home. According to Siegler, the case went through “a whole bunch of pretty sketchy, shady characters” until the child’s testimony helped prove who was behind the shocking crime. The shooting of Farah Fratta On November 9, 1994 at 7:38 p.m., neighbor Laura Hoelscher nursed her infant son on the living room couch when she witnessed 34-year-old Farah Fratta reverse her car into her home garage across the street. Hoelscher told producers she heard “a pop” before seeing Mrs. Fratta fall to the ground, followed by “another pop,” and initially believed it to be Fratta’s young sons horsing around. But when Farah Fratta failed to get up, Hoelscher phoned 911 and reported that a ****** male in ****** clothes seemed to have been lying in wait. Still on the phone with dispatchers, Hoelscher watched the garage lights go off before the shooter went behind a tree, followed by a second person pulling up in a vehicle to pick the gunman up. For more in true crime: Florida Woman Murders Private Investigator Friend Who Gave Her $34,000 To Hold Staten Island Man Pushes Wife Down Stairs, Stabs Her To Death, Then Visits Sex Worker “Wiccan Witch” Uses “Ceremonial Dagger” to Perform “Human Sacrifice” on Man She Lured to Trail “It was a silver car, I believe, with one burned-out headlight,” the neighbor told 911 operators. “The suspect just took off.” When Hoelscher’s husband went to the scene, Farah Fratta was barely clinging to life after sustaining two gunshot wounds to the head. Members of law enforcement, such as crime scene investigator Dep. J.D. “Dave” Ferrell and Sgt. Harry Fikaris, would be correct in assuming the victim wouldn’t make it through the night, despite being Life Flighted to an area hospital. Farah Fratta’s purse and other items left at the crime scene indicated it wasn’t a robbery. Detectives look into Farah Fratta’s husband, Bob Fratta Farah Fratta and Robert Alan Fratta, featured on Prosecuting Evil Episode 203, hold their newborn. Less than an hour after the shooting, before Farah Fratta passed in the night, her husband, Robert “Bob” Fratta, showed up with the couple’s three children: Bradley, 7, Daniel, 6, and Amber, 4. The eldest, who took his maternal parents’ surname and now goes by Bradley Baquer, told Prosecuting Evil it was a “chaotic scene.” Right away, investigators pointed their attention to the husband. “At the crime scene, while I’m talking to Robert, he was not asking questions that you would think someone would be asking when they find out that his wife and [the] mother of his children have just been shot,” said Fikaris. “He’s focusing on telling the story about his alibi.” But, Bob Fratta had a strong alibi: He was at church when the shooting occurred, where the two younger children stayed in the nursery, and the eldest attended catechism class. Siegler, however, wondered if Bob Fratta’s job experience as a police officer and firefighter out of Missouri City, Texas — about 20 miles southwest of Houston — gave the husband and bodybuilder an edge during his 14-hour interrogation. “When one cop is interviewing another cop, they’re aware that the person they’re talking to knows all the rules,” Siegler said. “They know the game, they know the law, they know how to work all that to their advantage more than the typical suspect.” During the video-recorded interview, published by Prosecuting Evil, Bob Fratta said he couldn’t think of anyone who hated his wife. However, he suggested they “check her lifestyle,” citing her desire to attend nightclubs and recent breast augmentation. Detectives grew even more suspicious in the ensuing days, given Bob Fratta’s flirtatious and carefree demeanor with media outlets. Farah and Bob Fratta’s ongoing divorce Authorities discovered Farah and Bob Fratta were embroiled in a contentious divorce and child custody battle. According to the victim’s coworker and friend, Kitty Sneed, the U.K.-born Farah Fratta worked as a ticket agent for American Airlines when she first met Bob, a ticket agent at the time, and the pair just “hit it off.” “He could charm the pants off anybody,” said Sneed. After several years of marriage and three children, things between husband and wife began to unravel. Sneed said Bob Fratta “put up a good front” but was “very selfish,” often being emotionally abusive by targeting Farah Fratta’s self-image. While Farah Fratta was a more timid woman, Bob Fratta “latched onto her insecurities and made them worse.” This, according to Sneed, was why Farah Fratta had cosmetic surgery in the first place. Farah Fratta wanted out and sought a divorce, custody, and child support. But, what authorities proffered as another motive, Farah Fratta made “******, ugly” statements about their sex life during a deposition in divorce proceedings — details the husband might not have wanted to be made public, according to Siegler. Sgt. Fikaris noted the suspect’s “alternate lifestyle” not only included frequent visits to topless strip clubs but also “very kinky sex,” the kind that reportedly comprised Bob Fratta being defecated on. “That kind of sex is what he really liked, and he wanted her to do that, and she had told other people that she was disgusted by it and couldn’t do it anymore,” said Siegler. “She was ready for that part of her life to be over with.” Still, Bob Fratta denied having a role in his estranged wife’s *********. In fact, by his own admission hours after the *******, Bob Fratta said that having Farah Fratta dead would have meant he potentially missed out on $600 to $700 a week she’d have to pay in child support. RELATED: Texas Town Shaken After 2 Prosecutors, Plus Another, Slain in “Pure Revenge Killing” Investigators sift through Bob Fratta’s alibi Harris County officials gleaned from several eyewitnesses that Bob Fratta, before his wife’s death, frequently complained about the divorce to others at the local gym. The embattled husband told many that he feared losing everything and having to fork over child support. “That’s when we found out that he was asking people if they knew anybody that would kill her for him,” Fikaris told Prosecuting Evil. Bob Fratta asked “a lot of people” about hiring someone to kill his wife, according to Siegler, but no one took him seriously. Meanwhile, detectives dug deeper into his alibi and found witnesses who noted his “strange” behavior, such as using the church phone to make and receive a number of phone calls. His then-7-year-old son, Bradley Baquer, witnessed this out-of-the-ordinary behavior, as well as phone calls Bob Fratta later made when they sat at a restaurant. “While eating there, two times, at least to my knowledge, [he] left us sitting in the booth and went to a pay phone to make phone calls,” Baquer told Prosecuting Evil. Authorities sifted through phone records, learning the back-and-forth calls linked to a phone and pager belonging to a woman named Mary *****. ***** initially refused to cooperate with law enforcement but opened up upon the promise of immunity. Were others involved in Farah Fratta’s *******? ***** stated Bob Fratta had approached her live-in boyfriend, Joseph Prystash, at the gym, offering him $2,000 and a Jeep to kill his wife. Prystash then acted as the middleman, enlisting another, Howard Guidry, to carry out the shooting. Guidry’s appearance and Prystash’s vehicle matched the statements of Farah Fratta’s neighbor across the street. “Mary ***** knew what was about to go down, yet she didn’t call one person and warn them,” said Siegler. “Not Farah, not the police, not anybody. She let it happen.” ***** was home on the night of the shooting, when Prystash returned from helping kill Farah Fratta. For the girlfriend’s own insurance, she secretly wrote down the .38 Smith & Wesson revolver’s serial number, which in March 1995, was linked to a separate bank robbery for which Guidry had just been arrested. The ******* weapon was registered to none other than Bob Fratta. Soon, Prystash confessed to being the getaway driver, and Guidry admitted to pulling the trigger, all on behalf of Bob Fratta. Since Texas law states *******-for-hire doesn’t differentiate between the roles of mastermind, middleman, and executioner, all three were charged with capital *******. The 1996 trial of Bob Fratta Robert Alan Fratta, featured in Prosecuting Evil Episode 203, smiles in a blue tank top. Bob Fratta was the first to be tried, beginning on April 9, 1996. Siegler prosecuted the case and painted him as a “******* deviant” who didn’t want others knowing about the ******* proclivities Farah Fratta confessed to in her deposition. It was, the prosecution submitted, the straw that broke the camel’s back amid their heated divorce and child custody battle. “That was when he decided he had to take care of Farah,” said Siegler. Against the advice of her boss, Siegler opted to have the couple’s eldest take the stand. It was an emotional time for Siegler, who could remember Baquer not understanding the impact of his statements and even waving to his father from the stand. “The prosecutor part of me was coldly thinking, ‘Let’s focus here,’” Siegler remembered. “The mother part of me wanted to cry and just yank him off and take him out.” RELATED: Investigators Revisit the Crime Scene of a Murdered Prosecutor’s Broad-Daylight Attack But it was the boy’s remarkable testimony that tied Bob Fratta to the phone calls at the church and diner around the time someone fatally shot Farah Fratta. The phone, belonging to Mary *****, was in Prystash and Guidry’s possession, according to Siegler. In Prosecuting Evil, Siegler and Baquer had an emotional reunion, 28 years after the eldest son took the stand. “I had no idea why I was answering these questions for you,” Baquer told Siegler. “I had no idea my dad was the one being charged, you know?” Still, Baquer understood his testimony was “needed” to attain closure for his mother. Mary *****, who was granted immunity in exchange for her cooperation, also took the stand, testifying that she was there when Prystash dressed in ****** and left their home to pick up Guidry and carry out the *******. “There’s one person that I will never, ever forgive, and that’s Mary *****,” Baquer told Siegler. “I know that she knew what was going to happen and she didn’t do a damn thing.” Bob Fratta is sentenced to death On April 17, 1996, 17 months after Farah Fratta’s *******, a jury found Bob Fratta guilty of capital *******. It wasn’t until after the verdict was reached that Farah Fratta’s parents, Lex and Betty Baquer, sat the children down and explained what exactly happened. “I couldn’t process [that] my father had someone kill my mother,” Baquer told Prosecuting Evil. “I still looked at my father like he’s my father, and I’m still trying to understand why, or if this is even real.” One month later, during the penalty phase of trial, Bob Fratta was sentenced to death. Baquer said he grew up angry at his father, but at 18, he and his brother visited Bob Fratta on death row. He hoped the prisoner would perhaps confess to the crime or express remorse. He did neither. “He just wanted to constantly say he was innocent,” Baquer continued to Siegler. “It was honestly him trying to convince us that he’s behind bars for no reason.” Following Bob Fratta’s sentencing, Prystash and Guidry stood trial, and both were also found guilty of capital ******* and sentenced to death. They are still awaiting execution on death row, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Bob Fratta was executed by lethal injection on January 10, 2003, an event Bradley Baquer attended. When asked if he had any last words, the convicted man only replied, “No.” Don’t miss all-new episodes of Prosecuting Evil with Kelly Siegler, Saturdays at 8/7c on Oxygen. 4. What to expect from Mario’s 40th anniversary What to expect from Mario’s 40th anniversary LoveSpuds2h ago(Edited 2h ago) I appreciate both, the most important factor is whether it is fun and that includes in respect of what some may consider to be ‘padding’. I love open world games and find it very therapeutic to clear items off a map (within reason) provided whatever the action is thats required is fun or interesting. The biggest issue I have is that my backlog is crazy and I am always excited to try a new game which can lead to me sometimes wishing the game I am currently playing would come to an end, sometimes unfairly. Prime example of this was that I recently bought my long desired physical copy of Alan Wake 2, really enjoying it but I am now at the 14 hour mark and, despite enjoying it, I am finding it a bit ‘samey’ and just want it to end so I can move on. There was no danger to the crew of the An Yang 2, which is carrying coal and heavy fuel oil, Gov. Valery Limarenko said in a post on Telegram on Sunday. Russia’s emergencies ministry said 20 crew were aboard. Limarenko said that no fuel spillage was recorded, but local authorities had to be prepared for any scenario. 9. Lenovo hybrid 2D/3D curved monitor and nine new laptops have leaked — MWC 2025 lineup exposed Lenovo hybrid 2D/3D curved monitor and nine new laptops have leaked — MWC 2025 lineup exposed Hardware leaker Evan Blass just shared alleged photos of Lenovo’s lineup for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 show, which will run from March 3 to 6. The X (formerly Twitter) post shows off nine new laptops and a 3D curved monitor. We’re unsure if this will be the complete roster of products the company will bring to Barcelona, but it does show off some attractive laptop models and a monitor that we haven’t seen before. The biggest thing that caught our eye is the supposedly hybrid 2D/3D 34-inch curved monitor. This is similar to Lenovo’s already existing ThinkVision 27 3D, which is a glasses-free 2D/3D compatible display, but offers a larger curved screen. It’s likely focused on professionals who are also into gaming, especially as this display sports the company’s Legion gaming brand. However, we don’t have further information about this display, so we’ll have to wait until March to get its specifications. Aside from that, we also get two new laptop models and a slew of next-generation iterations of existing options. For the former, we see the IdeaPad Slim 3x, which features a 15-inch screen and will likely run on a Snapdragon X chip, and the ThinkPad T14s 2-in-1, which will be the first time that Lenovo’s flagship ThinkPad T-series will have a 2-in-1 form factor laptop. Lenovo will also apparently showcase the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 at MWC — a 14-inch laptop powered by a Snapdragon X chip — that’s already available on its website. Lenovo has an extensive laptop lineup, and it is also at the forefront of innovation. For example, it offers a ton of 2-in-1 laptop models, giving users the best of both worlds. It also introduced a laptop with a 14-inch display that expands to 16.7 inches with its rollable OLED screen. Aside from these laptops, the company launched two new mini-PCs at CES 2025 powered by Snapdragon X chips, sounding out the market for equipping this relatively powerful laptop processor in a small desktop PC. 10. What Big Tech execs have said about DeepSeek as US contemplates ban What Big Tech execs have said about DeepSeek as US contemplates ban A wave of Big Tech companies reported quarterly earnings in recent weeks — including six of the so-called Magnificent 7 firms — shortly after ******** AI startup DeepSeek rattled the stock market as investors saw its new, cheap artificial intelligence models as an ominous sign for US tech stocks. DeepSeek’s innovations so shook the US tech industry that AI darling Nvidia (NVDA) saw $600 billion shaved off its market cap in a single day — the biggest loss in stock market history — as investors worried Big Tech would slow its spending on AI hardware. Now, some US lawmakers are pushing to ban the app from government-owned devices, according to the Wall Street Journal. On earnings calls with investors, executives across these firms were quick to praise DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence models, dismissed them, or attempted to avoid the topic altogether. US tech executives’ reactions to the sell-off — which impacted most of their stocks — ranged from defensive to excited. While most agreed the DeepSeek news is a sign that AI costs will come down eventually, they reaffirmed their commitments to spending massive sums on capital expenditures and other investments for AI infrastructure in 2025, despite a lack of clarity about when the payoff for that spending will come. Here’s what they said. Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella was quick to embrace DeepSeek, mentioning the firm in his opening remarks on a post-earnings call on Jan. 29. Nadella pointed to Microsoft’s move to put DeepSeek’s latest AI model on its developer platforms, Azure AI Foundry and GitHub, adding that it went through “automated red teaming, content safety integration, and security scanning.” He said customers will soon be able to run DeepSeek’s models locally on Microsoft’s AI PCs. “I think DeepSeek has had some real innovations,” Nadella said, adding that he sees AI getting “commoditized.” “For a hyperscaler like us, a PC platform provider like us, this is all good news as far as I’m concerned.” Microsoft Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella speaks during the Microsoft May 20 Briefing event at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, on May 20, 2024. (Photo by Jason Redmond / AFP) (Photo by JASON REDMOND/AFP via Getty Images) · JASON REDMOND via Getty Images Meta (META) — which one tech analyst recently described as “the most well-placed company to take advantage of generative AI” given its advertising business — saw its stock climb on DeepSeek’s debut of its new AI model called R1, with shares rising nearly 2% on the day of the news. CEO Mark Zuckerberg was relatively nonchalant about the DeepSeek frenzy. When questioned on whether the potential for lower-cost AI models would affect Meta’s capital expenditures, the chief executive said in a call following the company’s latest quarterly earnings: “I don’t know — it’s probably too early to really have a strong opinion on what this means for the trajectory around infrastructure and capex and things like that.” Story Continues Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg tries on Orion AR glasses at the Meta Connect annual event at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, U.S., September 25, 2024. REUTERS/Manuel Orbegozo · REUTERS / Reuters But DeepSeek is also competition for Meta, which has sought to make its open-source Llama AI models the global standard. DeepSeek’s models are also open source. “I also just think in light of some of the recent news, the new competitor, DeepSeek from China … it’s one of the things that we’re talking about is there’s going to be an open-source standard globally,” Zuckerberg said. “And I think for our kind of own national advantage, it’s important that it’s an American standard.” Asked for his “worldly perspective” on “the DeepSeek situation,” Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said in a post-earnings call Jan. 30 that “innovation that drives efficiency is a good thing” and noted that the iPhone maker takes a “very prudent and deliberate approach to our expenditure.” Apple shares jumped more than 3% the same day DeepSeek released its latest R1 model. When asked about what DeepSeek’s low-cost model means for Google (GOOG), CEO Sundar Pichai said that while DeepSeek’s team has “done very, very good work,” he thinks Google’s Gemini Flash models are better. “I would say both our 2.0 Flash models, our 2.0 Flash thinking models, they are some of the most efficient models out there, including comparing to DeepSeek’s V3 and R1.” “And I think a lot of it is our strength of the full-stack development [Google makes its own custom AI chips as well as AI models and the software that runs on them], end-to-end optimization, our obsession with cost per query,” Pichai added. “I think part of the reason we are so excited about the AI opportunity is, we know we can drive extraordinary use cases because the cost of actually using it is going to keep coming down, which will make more use cases feasible.” Amazon (AMZN) CEO Andy Jassy said he thinks that DeepSeek’s models won’t spark a downturn in AI investment. “Sometimes people make the assumptions that if you’re able to decrease the cost of any type of technology component, in this case, we’re really talking about inference [running AI models], that somehow it’s going to lead to less total spend in technology. And we have never seen that to be the case.” Jassy pointed to the company’s aggressive spending on developing its cloud infrastructure in the early 2000s, even as costs came down. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy speaks during a keynote address at AWS re:Invent 2024, a conference hosted by Amazon Web Services, at The Venetian Las Vegas on December 3, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Noah Berger/Getty Images for Amazon Web Services) · Noah Berger via Getty Images He’s right, at least for now. Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft said in their earnings calls that, despite the anticipation that artificial intelligence training and inference costs will come down, they will spend a cumulative $325 billion in 2025, a 46% increase from the prior year. Amazon is the biggest spender of the group. Investors weren’t pleased: Amazon’s stock dropped 4% Friday following executives’ commentary that they expect to hike capital expenditures by 35% to more than $100 billion. AMD (AMD) CEO Lisa Su expressed her conviction that new innovations such as DeepSeek’s models won’t drive down investment in AI, pointing to the recently announced $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project backed by SoftBank (SFTBY), Oracle (ORCL), and OpenAI. “All of these initiatives require massive amounts of new compute and create unprecedented growth opportunities for AMD across our businesses.” AMD CEO Lisa Su speaks onstage during the 2024 A Year in TIME dinner at Current at Chelsea Piers on December 11, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images for TIME) · Noam Galai via Getty Images Perhaps most enthused about DeepSeek’s innovations was Qualcomm (QCOM) CEO Cristiano Amon, who made the case that such developments could speed up the timeline for AI to drive a new wave of demand for smartphones and PCs. “DeepSeek-R1 and other similar models recently demonstrated the AI models are developing faster, becoming smaller, more capable and efficient and now able to run directly on device,” Amon said. “As we enter the era of AI inference, we expect that while training will continue in the cloud, inference will run increasingly on device, making AI more accessible, customizable, and efficient. This will encourage the development of more targeted, purpose-oriented models and applications, which we anticipate will drive increased adoption, and, in turn, demand for Qualcomm platforms across a range of devices.” CEO and President at Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon, attends the first day of Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 12, 2024. (Photo by Rita Franca/NurPhoto via Getty Images) · NurPhoto via Getty Images Arm (ARM) CEO Rene Haas also argued that the ***-based chip architecture designer would benefit from lower-cost AI for consumer devices, even taking a jab at Nvidia. “As wonderful a product as [Nvidia’s] Grace Blackwell is, you’d never be able to put it in a cell phone, you’d never be able to put it into earbuds. 12. Trump tariffs rip right through C-suites and financial models Trump tariffs rip right through C-suites and financial models This is The Takeaway from today’s Morning Brief, which you can sign up to receive in your inbox every morning along with: The C-suite is usually the one holding all the cards. At conferences, these are the folks with the best outfits, education, contacts, and watches. They then head out of said exclusive conference on the corporate private jet or helicopter. At home, their enormous pay packages afford them vast freedoms. So I am finding it more fascinating than ever to interact with the C-suite in various venues as they collectively try to live — and profit — in the second Trump era. One month into the year and hundreds of conversations logged, I can tell you this usually ultra-powerful club feels powerless. It’s a position these people aren’t used to being in. These are the shot callers. The moneymakers. Not in the second Trump era where it looks like the president is going to go for broke to achieve his most hawkish policy objectives. Watch: How Gap’s CEO is navigating tariffs This embedded content is not available in your region. Sure a CEO can dispatch an underling to hire a lobbyist to talk with some lower-level Trump administration member (and they have). And yes, some have a quasi-direct line to the president. But by and large, this is a group beginning to get really frustrated by the new administration’s ramping levels of policy chaos. They were promised tax cuts, regulatory rollbacks, and everything else under the sun that could jack up stock prices and profits (and bonuses). And nowhere is this frustration materializing more than on the topic of the year: tariffs. (Behind that: AI and DEI). “I mean, we have to be extremely agile and have multiple scenarios,” PepsiCo chair and CEO Ramon Laguarta told me this week after earnings. “I think we have become better at scenario planning. We have become better at having plan B’s and plan C’s in every market, and at a corporate level, we have to have very strong government relations.” Laguarta was answering my question about how his teams are managing through the current policy volatility. He said the company wouldn’t be immune to tariffs. Read more: What are tariffs, and how do they affect you? Two weeks ago at the World Economic Forum, Laguarta told me he was “hopeful” about the new administration. Ideally, Laguarta and his teams would be spending time concocting a new drink that pummels rival Coca-Cola (KO) rather than cooking up dozens of scenarios tied to Trump policies. Story Continues PepsiCo’s full-year guidance was more conservative than normal because of, you guessed it, policy uncertainty. Ditto General Motors (GM) this earnings season. “We’ve done a lot of scenario planning and we know the levers that we can pull to minimize any impact [of tariffs],” GM chair and CEO Mary Barra told me last week. GM produces highly profitable pickup trucks in Mexico and relies on plants there to make EVs such as the Chevy Blazer and Cadillac Optiq. It has five large assembly plants in Canada and Mexico. Ford (F) manufactures 12% of its products in the two countries. Ford CEO Jim Farley said on his earnings call this week tariffs would hammer profits. The number of S&P 500 firms mentioning tariffs on their earnings calls has exceeded 220 and hit an all-time high for the fourth quarter, according to data from Fundstrat. This eclipsed the peak seen during the previous trade war triggered by Trump in 2018. Earnings estimates for S&P 500 companies for the next 12 months have begun to trend lower as analysts bake in policy uncertainty, data from Truist showed. “Regarding tariffs on earnings calls: One is to be ready. This is going to be top of mind, competing with the pickup in AI deployment questions,” Truist co-chief investment officer Keith Lerner told me. Chipotle’s (CMG) new CFO Adam Rymer stopped short of calling the past week chaotic, but his description on navigating tariff drama makes it seem like he has been busier than the norm. It appeared last weekend that avocados from Mexico would be hit with a tariff. Then those tariffs were delayed. Note: delayed, not halted completely. “There are definitely a lot of ups and downs, especially preparing for our earnings. And luckily we have an unbelievable finance team and supply chain team that we had all the scenarios mapped out,” Rymer told me on Yahoo Finance’s Morning Brief. Rymer said Chipotle won’t raise prices immediately should tariffs be fully enacted. Listen: Why Chili’s is on fire I read all of this as execs are being made toothless by the Trump White House. The lone exec I’ve talked to seemingly navigating Trump 2.0 well? Disney (DIS) CFO Hugh Johnston. I asked Johnston (video above) how Trump policy chaos would impact Shanghai Disney — he said it won’t. I asked if China could make it tougher for Disney to get approval for movies — he said it won’t. “Well obviously, we’re in a rapidly evolving macroeconomic environment. But frankly, in so many ways at Walt Disney Company, our job is to bring joy to people. Our job is to bring families together. Our job is to create smiles. And as a result of that we tend to be a little bit immune to these types of things,” Johnston said. Unfortunately for most C-suites, they aren’t in the smile-creating business. They are in the moneymaking business. And that can’t be done effectively if policy chaos continues, especially on tariffs. Brian Sozzi is Yahoo Finance’s Executive Editor. 13. 3 money moves to avoid when starting a relationship 3 money moves to avoid when starting a relationship When you start dating someone seriously, and especially if you’re thinking about getting married, it’s a good idea to know where your partner stands financially. “The most successful couples have a shared vision of a rich life … they have designed a vision of what they want their money to do,” Ramit Sethi, self-made millionaire and author of the new book, “Money for Couples,” tells CNBC Make It. “The most successful couples also talk about money regularly, proactively and positively, and they have systems in place to make sure that their money goes where they want it to go,” Sethi has worked with thousands of couples over the last 20 years, helping them figure out big financial situations like getting out of debt, navigating income disparities and planning for retirement. He’s been married since 2018 himself, and often shares the strategies he and his wife use to maintain a positive relationship with each other and their finances. Here are three moves Sethi recommends avoiding if you’re trying to build a financially successful relationship. 1. Bragging about money It may be tempting to show off your financial prowess and prove to a potential partner that you’re financially stable, but bragging about your salary or investments can give the wrong impression and land you in an uncomfortable relationship with mismatched values. “Leading with money attracts the wrong type of attention,” Sethi says. Relationship experts agree. Asking about a potential partner’s income on a first date is “socially unacceptable,” dating coach Kelsey Wonderlin recently told CNBC Make It. “It’s an unrealistic viewpoint that if someone makes this certain number everything will be great,” she said. “Having a big income disparity could be a big challenge, but an equally hard challenge would be a difference in values of how you spend money and how you save money.” That being said, “there are natural times to learn more about your partner and to even talk about money,” Sethi says. Asking questions like, “What does your family do for the holidays?” may offer insight into another person’s financial background. If your date says their family goes skiing in Aspen every year, they probably come from a different financial situation than someone who says they normally stay home or take a road trip to visit family, Sethi says. 2. Judging someone for their financial situation As you start to learn more details about a partner’s finances, like their salary or what kind of debt they have, Sethi says he would “never judge someone based on [their] life situation.” Instead of making assumptions or immediately writing off someone who says they have credit card debt, for example, Sethi says to “get curious” about it. “Why do you have credit card debt? And more importantly, what’s the plan?” he says he would ask. Plenty of people are already ashamed of the debt they’re carrying, Sethi says, and receiving judgement about it — especially from someone they may care about — won’t solve the problem. But understanding how they got into a certain situation, and what they’re doing about it, can reveal more about who they are as a person. “I think one of the most attractive things is when somebody is vulnerable and open about a decision they made in the past, and then they talk about what they are doing to change it,” Sethi says. 3. Apologizing for personal values While you shouldn’t judge someone’s financial situation, it is OK to decide that they have views on money you don’t vibe with. “You don’t have to apologize for wanting a partner whose financial values align with you,” Sethi says. “Money isn’t just some little thing in a relationship that’s put to the side. It affects where you live, what you eat, what type of family structure you can have. Money affects who you are.” You don’t have to agree on every single thing, but it’s important to be able to be open and honest during regular conversations about your views on money, the kind of lifestyle you want to have and your partner’s place in that, he says. 15. Clues and answer for Sunday, February 9 Clues and answer for Sunday, February 9 Hey, there! We hope you’re making the most of the weekend. Perhaps that involves trying to keep your Wordle streak rolling along. To help make sure that happens, here’s our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Sunday’s puzzle (#1,331). It may be that you’re a Wordle newcomer and you’re not completely sure how to play the game. We’re here to help with that too. What is Wordle? Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game’s success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it’s little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. How to play Wordle To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day’s secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren’t in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. You’ll only have six guesses to find each day’s word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It’s also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT’s website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. How to play Wordle more than once a day If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication’s games, you don’t have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You’ll have access to an archive of more than 1,200 previous Wordle games. So if you’re a relative newcomer, you’ll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day’s game. Friday’s losses left the major averages in negative territory on the week. The 30-stock gave up 0.5%, the dipped 0.2% and the tech-heavy fell 0.5%. Source: Investing.com The week ahead is expected to be another eventful one as investors gauge the outlook for the economy, inflation, and interest rates. On the economic calendar, most important will be Wednesday’s U.S. consumer price inflation report for January, which could spark further turmoil if it comes in higher than expectations. The CPI data will be accompanied by the release of the latest figures on producer prices, which will help fill out the inflation picture, as well as the January retail sales report. Meanwhile, the Fed’s rate view could become clearer when Chairman Jerome Powell delivers semiannual monetary policy testimony before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday. Source: Investing.com Traders now expect the U.S. central bank to cut interest rates just once this year, backing away from earlier bets on two rate cuts starting in June, as per the Investing.com . Elsewhere, the busy earnings season continues with reports due from Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:), Shopify (NYSE:), Coinbase (NASDAQ:), Robinhood (NASDAQ:), AppLovin (NASDAQ:), Reddit (NYSE:), Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:), McDonald’s (NYSE:), Coca-Cola (NYSE:), Moderna (NASDAQ:), CVS Health (NYSE:), Airbnb (NASDAQ:), and DoorDash (NASDAQ:). Regardless of which direction the market goes, below I highlight one stock likely to be in demand and another which could see fresh downside. Remember though, my timeframe is just for the week ahead, Monday, February 10 – Friday, February 14. Stock To Buy: Robinhood Robinhood, the commission-free trading app popular with retail investors, is set to report its fourth quarter earnings update after the closing bell on Wednesday at 4:05PM ET, and expectations are sky-high. Market participants predict a sizable swing in HOOD stock after the print drops, according to the options market, with a possible implied move of 12.4% in either direction. In a sign of growing confidence, the company has received three upward profit forecast revisions in recent days, with zero downward revisions. Source: InvestingPro Analysts forecast earnings per share (EPS) of $0.52, representing a staggering increase from a profit of $0.03 in the year-ago *******. Revenue is projected to nearly double year-over-year to $951.8 million as Robinhood continues to expand its user base and capitalize on renewed momentum in crypto and equity trading. The company has positioned itself as a leader in the retail investing space, benefiting from rising interest in stock and crypto trading. Robinhood’s improved operational efficiency and cost-cutting measures have also enhanced profitability. Moreover, the retail brokerage firm has made strides in diversifying its revenue streams, particularly through its growing options trading and subscription-based products. Source: Investing.com Shares of Robinhood have been on a tear, hitting a series of record highs in recent sessions. HOOD closed at $55.86 on Friday, earning the company a valuation of $49.4 billion. The stock is up 50% so far in 2025, as optimism builds around its ability to benefit from a resurgent retail trading wave. Additionally, Robinhood demonstrates impressive financial health, boasting an InvestingPro Health Score of 3.2 out of 5.0 (“Great”), which reflects a strong balance sheet, improving cash flow and efficient operations. Stock To Sell: Moderna On the other hand, Moderna is facing significant headwinds heading into its Q4 earnings report, scheduled for release later this week. The results are due ahead of Friday’s opening bell at 6:35AM ET and the expected move is about 11% up or down. The once high-flying vaccine maker is struggling with declining demand for its COVID-19 shots, and analysts expect a disappointing quarter ahead amid concerns over weakening revenue growth, heavy R&D spending, and a lack of diversification. In the three months leading up to the earnings update, analysts have slashed their EPS estimates 12 times, compared to zero upward revisions. Source: InvestingPro Moderna is expected to post a Q4 loss of -$2.70 per share, a sharp reversal from the $0.55 profit recorded a year ago. Revenue is expected to plummet almost 70% year-over-year to $951.1 million. The biotech company is now facing revenue growth challenges with limited near-term catalysts to offset declining demand as vaccine sales continue to decline. Moderna’s non-COVID pipeline offers little near-term relief. Its experimental flu and RSV vaccines lag behind established players, leaving it overly reliant on a shrinking market. Source: Investing.com MRNA stock ended Friday’s session at $32.60, not far from a recent 52-week low of $31.94, which was the weakest level since April 2020. At its current valuation, Moderna has a market cap of $12.5 billion. Shares, which are trading below their key moving averages, are down 21.6% to start the new year. Additionally, Moderna holds a below-average InvestingPro Financial Health Score of 2.1 out of 5.0, reflecting concerns about weak revenue performance and slowing growth prospects. 18. Netley boy saves thousands of sweet tubs from landfill Netley boy saves thousands of sweet tubs from landfill BBC Teddy has collected more than 2,000 plastic confectionery tubs “I’m one little boy and it started with one tub and one dream to save the planet, and now look how many we’ve got.” Teddy has collected more than 2,500 plastic confectionery tubs because he does not want them to end up in landfill. The six-year-old from Netley in Hampshire was “angry” when he found out that the tubs, often piled high in supermarkets, could not be recycled by the kerbside. Teddy, whose hero is David Attenborough, told the BBC: “We have one planet and we need to look after it.” Teddy has been picking up tubs from houses and others are left on his doorstep Last year he collected 358 of the tubs, which are typically sold with chocolates, sweets, or crackers inside. He wrote a letter to his school, which in turn sent out a letter to parents, and together with his mum Laura he put up posters at local businesses. He even asked his grandad to go to the local tip to ask them to save any tubs that people had binned, to prevent them going to landfill. Recently he stepped up his activity, and a post on Facebook in which he described himself as an “eco warrior on a mission” and telling of how “hundreds of thousands of [tubs] go to landfill or the ocean” helped gather momentum. He quickly “smashed” this year’s target of 500 tubs, reaching 2,598 in a month. He has also been collecting them from people’s houses, and has taken them out of bins. Mum Laura said people had been “so supportive and kind” Teddy, who wants to be a marine biologist or a stunt man when he grows up, said: “I’d heard we can’t recycle these tubs in our normal recycling bin but I wanted to change that so I can save the world. “We have one planet and we need to look after it.” Mum Laura said: “Teddy’s realising now the issues we have, and is really keen on trying to get the message out there, and inspiring others to make a difference. “It doesn’t matter what change you’re making or how big or small, it does make a difference to our environment.” She added: “People have been so supportive and kind getting behind him. “Every time we come home there’s more tubs left on the doorstep, friends have told friends who’ve told friends and every tub makes the difference.” The tubs will be taken to a plastic reprocessing centre Teddy has collected the tubs as part of Greene King’s Tub2Pub charity appeal. The tubs will be taken to The Shamblehurst Barn pub and from there to a plastic reprocessing centre. But for now he has no plans to repeat the feat next year. “I’m going to have a break,” he admitted. “I’ve done it for two years straight!” Source link #Netley #boy #saves #thousands #sweet #tubs #landfill Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  21. Trump vows to tap America’s ‘liquid gold’ oil reserves and ‘drill baby, drill’—the only problem is, it’s not up to him Trump vows to tap America’s ‘liquid gold’ oil reserves and ‘drill baby, drill’—the only problem is, it’s not up to him President Trump wants to tap America’s oil reserves to boost the economy during his term—but industry shareholders care about their dividends, not his popularity. Also, the economics of oil exploration and production aren’t simple and are unlikely to be swayed by short-term political policy. Donald Trump is planning to revitalize America’s economy by digging deep. Literally. In his inauguration speech President Trump told attendees: “We have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have—the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on earth, and we are going to use it. “We will be a rich nation again and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it.” According to research and experts in the field, however, it’s not technically accurate to say the U.S. has the largest oil and gas reserves on the planet—nor can the Commander-in-Chief guarantee it will be drilled. After all, unless President Trump is planning a radical overhaul of his nation’s energy industry the decision to “drill baby, drill” isn’t his call. In reality it’s up to the shareholders of the private entities that run the sector. And unless it’s economically viable for them, they’re under no obligation to increase production. The question is, what will President Trump do to motivate them into upping the ante? How much oil does America produce? When President Trump talks of the ‘amount’ of natural resources America is home to, he may be referring to production. On this count it would be correct to say the U.S. produces the most oil and gas compared to any nation on earth—and has done so for the majority of the past decade. But looking ahead, the industry has been readying itself for a plateau in production growth as reserves become exhausted and opportunities for new digging sites dwindle. So, after an era of extreme investment in new technologies like fracking, the focus is now on returning value to shareholders and preserving resources for the longer term. Shareholder returns and resource preservation aren’t priorities shareholders will relinquish out of patriotic spirit alone, said Matthew Bernstein, a senior analyst of upstream research at energy intelligence company Rystad Energy. “The sentiment in the industry … is pretty much completely politically agnostic,” Bernstein told Fortune. “The sentiment in terms of what we’re expecting when budgets are released—and based off of what was delivered at the end of last year—is: ‘We’re sticking with our corporate strategy.'” That strategy is a focus on shareholder returns, moderate growth and capital discipline, he added. “Basically: ‘We’ll take the favorable rhetoric out of Washington, we certainly appreciate that there’s an unabashedly pro-oil and gas administration in the White House’, but that it’s really not going to affect their plans versus what it would have been a couple months ago,” Bernstein added. There is an outside chance that an industry-friendly administration could tempt shareholders into bringing forward capital expenditures penciled in for the next two decades and rescheduling them within the next five. “The opportunity maybe is to take some of those future volumes in the 2030s and the 2040s and … bring them a little bit forward,” said Robert Clarke, vice president of upstream research at energy analytics and data specialists WoodMac. “Would it be enough where the U.S. goes back to growing a million barrels a day, year on year? That was sort of the high number people referenced … You don’t necessarily see that happening. “But just because you won’t have these huge growth numbers doesn’t mean that you can’t have some growth numbers,” Clarke added. “The broader question is are there policy things that can be done? Are there incentives that can be put out there where you take some of that investment that’s probably in supply models for the 2030s and get it into the late half of the 2020s?” How much oil has America got? In the long term, other nations have the potential to uncover reserves greater than those of Uncle Sam. According to Rystad, as of Jan. 1, 2024, the U.S. had proven oil reserves totaling 32 billion barrels. In proven and probable oil reserves, Rystad’s estimate for the U.S. sits at 44 billion recoverable barrels. Factoring in all potential for U.S. oil production—between proven and probable sites, as well as contingent resources made in new discoveries—Rystad puts the figure at 156 billion barrels. Conversely, Saudi Arabia’s 106 billion barrels worth of proven oil reserves, probable and proven, sits at 177 billion, and all potential production sits at 247 billion barrels. For Russia, the figures sit at 58 billion, 93 billion, and 143 billion barrels, respectively. What’s it worth? In 2023—the most recent year of data available from the U.S. Energy Information Administration—the first purchase price of a barrel of American oil was a little over $76. Even compared to 20 years ago, this is a massive rise—during 2003, the price sat at an average of $27.56. The value of America’s oil reserves has, therefore, increased exponentially in the 21st century, begging the question of why producers—be it major players like Exxon Mobil or smaller outfits—wouldn’t cash in while the going is good. The problem is twofold. First, if supply floods the market, this will push prices down and thus impact margins, and second, the economics of oil production are not straightforward. That’s why raising production is a tough sell to shareholders, as WoodMac’s Clarke explains: “One of the things that oil companies are wrestling with is that there’s a bit of a bubbling up asking for people to produce more, but then there’s also some sort of rhetoric floating around about a goal of lower oil prices.” Within the industry, the sentiment is clear: Companies are beholden to their shareholders, not the White House. What does Trump need to do? Conveniently for President Trump, the White House could employ a couple of tricks to make drilling more economically attractive to shareholders. More minor incentives might include changes to tax codes to offset reinvestment or axing permitting red tape for smaller changes to existing wells. The most attention-grabbing incentive would be if more federal land were opened for drilling. “There are some parts of federal acreage that is really competitive,” explained Clarke. “So if the infrastructure was a bit better there, would an E&P [exploration and production company] put a rig there instead of somewhere else? It can shift the cost curve a little to the point of where they drill as opposed to how much they drill.” Even then, Bernstein argues, companies would effectively be “cannibalizing” from other areas of their portfolio. He explained: “In terms of total implications, it would really be an offsetting effect where you would get some activity being brought there if operators care to do so, but it would come at the expense of other acreage.” Is Trump’s plan realistic? Even President Trump’s best offer is unlikely to truly shift the scales for an industry that wants to survive in the long term. Bernstein says the White House’s plan seems unrealistic, adding: “When you’re considering this as an investment decision, you’re not just making for next year, next quarter, but for the long run. “The question becomes how are you able to position your business in a way that you can do this—not just next quarter—but you can keep the same value proposition 10, 20, 30 years from now?” Clarke is similarly realistic but said hypothetically, if these proposals came to fruition, then they could contribute in aggregate to America’s production profile changing. In turn, this would present an outcome where growth doesn’t flatten at the end of the decade, and this development is instead pushed out into the future. “We’re going to hit this plateau,” Clarke said. “So, how do other countries respond? What is the U.S. energy sector and how is it viewed? Is it rebranded if there’s enough additional activity from the 2030s brought forward to where that expectation for the plateau gets pushed down the line? “Markets are always looking for reflection points, they’re always looking for growth to turn into decline. “That could be the biggest shift coming out of all this, is if that that narrative of the U.S. plateau either goes away or gets pushed further into the future where it loses a bit of credibility.” This story was originally featured on Fortune.com Source link #Trump #vows #tap #Americas #liquid #gold #oil #reserves #drill #baby #drillthe #problem Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  23. CBS News poll — Trump has positive approval amid “energetic” opening weeks; seen as doing what he promised CBS News poll — Trump has positive approval amid “energetic” opening weeks; seen as doing what he promised With most describing him as “tough,” “energetic,” “focused” and “effective” — and as doing what he’d promised during his campaign — President Trump has started his term with net positive marks from Americans overall. Many say he’s doing more than they expected — and of those who say this, most like what they see. Very few think he’s doing less. His partisans and his voters, in particular, say he’s got the right amount of focus on matters like ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs and deporting those who are in the country illegally. His deportation policy finds majority approval overall — just as most voters said they wanted during the campaign — and that extends to sending troops to the border, too. But one key issue looms: Most Americans say the administration isn’t focused enough on lowering prices. Inflation was a key reason Mr. Trump won the election. During the 2024 campaign, voters picked many of these labels in describing Mr. Trump, and today, the percentages for them find similar or higher levels among Americans overall. And a large majority say he’s doing what he said he would, whether they approve of him or not. During the campaign most voters — and overwhelmingly, Trump voters — supported the idea of his new mass deportation program. So, today’s approval of the current program remains in alignment with that sentiment. Comparably more Americans are in favor of sending U.S. troops to the border. And while they are split on the idea of creating large detention centers where people would be kept, Mr. Trump’s 2024 voters are strongly in favor of that. Israel and Gaza Trump’s handling of the Israel-****** conflict draws overall positive marks, driven largely by support from Republicans. One item in particular, the president’s recent comments about taking over Gaza, drew wide attention (most Americans say they heard about them), and very few outright think that would be a good idea. Others say it depends. But the matter also opens more insight into how Americans view Mr. Trump’s approach. Most think his goal, at least partially, is really to open up negotiations for something else. Prices and tariffs Most Americans today feel the new administration isn’t focusing enough on lowering prices of goods and services. Lowering prices is the one item tested that a solid majority of the country agree Mr. Trump’s team should be focusing on more. That includes almost half of Republicans, even as they say he’s focusing the right amount on a wide range of other items. Those who today expect his policies to lower prices don’t expect it to happen overnight. Many of them think it’ll take at least six months. The administration gets relatively higher “right amount”-of-focus support for items like ending DEI programs and cutting foreign aid, driven by large numbers of Republicans thinking these should be a focus. The push for tariffs may be impacting public concern about prices. Tariffs on countries besides China aren’t popular with most, and nearly three in four think new tariffs on imported goods would generally lead to price increases. (And not necessarily to more jobs or stopping fentanyl.) People who think tariffs would lead to higher prices are more likely to think Mr. Trump’s policies in general will lead to higher grocery prices and won’t make them financially better off. Musk, DOGE and influence Republicans tend to think Elon Musk should have at least some influence over government operations and spending, though not necessarily “a lot” of influence, while Democrats tend to say he should have none, or not much. That said, most Trump voters and Republicans in large numbers think the administration is more generally putting the right amount of focus on cutting spending and cutting foreign aid. This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,175 U.S. adults interviewed between Feb. 5-7, 2025. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±2.5 points. More Anthony Salvanto Anthony Salvanto, Ph.D., is CBS News’ executive director of elections and surveys. 24. Six Nations: Fin Smith gives England new dimension – Matt Dawson Six Nations: Fin Smith gives England new dimension – Matt Dawson It showed that England have the ability to dominate teams in those “championship minutes” – the times that really matter, the ones that France fluffed in the first half. Marcus Smith is a game-breaker. He score tries, he is on all the posters and is so exciting to watch – his is probably the one name that kids growing up who want to get into rugby know about. But at that level yesterday, it is very difficult to integrate those type of players into key decision-making roles. While George Furbank recovers from his injury, I think Marcus Smith will play at full-back, but I don’t necessarily think he is the long-term solution there. Fin Smith showed there is a difference in the way you can compete. There has to be an element of calmness and control. For all his individual gifts – perhaps because of them – that isn’t Marcus Smith’s forte. I don’t think it will be a difficult decision for Steve Borthwick. In opting for Marcus Smith over Freddie Steward at full-back, you sacrifice aerial security for more of an attacking threat, but I think that is a price worth paying for this England team. Long-term though, particularly with the Northampton connection, I foresee George Furbank coming back into the team at 15. Test match rugby is tough. It is uncompromising high-performance environment. We are now more mindful of looking after each other in the work place and that is vital and important. But this is sport and it is a strict meritocracy. If there is someone who will serve the team better, you are out. And that is OK.
