  2. Premier League Darts results: Luke Littler beats Luke Humphries to win in Glasgow Premier League Darts results: Luke Littler beats Luke Humphries to win in Glasgow World champion Luke Littler defeated world number one Luke Humphries 6-5 in a last-leg decider to win night two of the Premier League in Glasgow. The 18-year-old was on the brink of defeat earlier in the evening against Rob Cross, but he fought back to clinch a fine victory. Humphries was hampered in the final against his fellow Englishman after needing a plaster on a cut on the middle finger of his right throwing hand. Despite that, and his frustration at whistling in the crowd, Humphries took a 5-4 lead before Littler won the next two legs in a performance which saw a 170 checkout, 55% doubles success and an average of 101.03 compared to his opponent’s 93.68. “It was a weird final. We both weren’t playing well,” said world number two Littler. “Now and again I look up at the screen and we’re on a 90 average. The crowd got involved.” Littler was runner-up to Humphries in last year’s world final before beating him to win the 2024 Premier League. 3. Cyclone Zelia: Storm expected to hit Pilbara coast this evening with winds of up to 320km/h Cyclone Zelia: Storm expected to hit Pilbara coast this evening with winds of up to 320km/h Cyclone Zelia is predicted to cross the Pilbara coast between 5pm and 6pm on Friday, with fears winds at the storm’s core could reach 320km/h. Weather bureau senior meteorologist Jonathan How said it was expected the core of the category 5 cyclone would cross the coast “about 50km west” of Port Hedland in the late afternoon or evening, around 5pm or 6pm. “That’s the core of the cyclone, but Port Hedland, of course, is still in a very destructive wind zone,” he told ABC radio. “Residents around Port Hedland and towards the west at this stage, look to be in the firing line of that core, crossing their communities. A Cyclone Emergency Warning is in place for the areas between Pardoo Roadhouse to Whim Creek — including Port Hedland. The emergency zone also extends inland to Marble Bar. Heavy rainfall reaching 100mm all the way to 500mm is possible as it moves over land, potentially leading to flash flooding. The impact the category 5 system had on residents overnight is still being confirmed as authorities brace for the worst of the cyclone. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said residents needed to act immediately as the cyclone poses a threat to lives and homes. They are urged to “shelter indoors now” as it is too late to evacuate. “Stay in the strongest, safest part of the building.” People are urged to stay away from doors and windows. They should be kept closed as flying debris could cause serious harm. DFES said people should keep their emergency kit with them. Several rivers are at risk of flooding, including the De Grey River, Nullagine River and Oakover River. Heavy rainfall has already been observed across the De Grey River catchment, would would likely extend over the weekend. “River level rises and areas of flooding may adversely affect road conditions,” a flood watch and act alert said. “Some roads may become impassable and communities may become isolated.” “Significant disruption of transportation networks and extensive road closures are expected.” Mr How said the Bureau would provide continued updates about the path of the storm. “So the exact position of the eye relative to sort of communities up there will be really critical tonight, at this stage, we are expecting the worst of those winds just to be to the west of Port Hedland but cyclones can sort of wobble round,” he said. “We are talking wind speeds of even in excess of 200 kilometers — that can cause major damage and disruption to property. “Many Pilbara communities are well equipped, they are pretty used to seeing cyclones, but of course, when we are seeing wind speeds of this strength, they can be extremely dangerous. “They could bring down trees and completely flatten structures and homes.” A Cyclone Emergency Warning is in place for the areas of Pardoo Roadhouse to Whim Creek and inland to Marble Bar. Mr How said the storm will likely weaken to a category three system in the early hours of Saturday but emphasises bad conditions would continue. “It is expected to continue to bring very strong, possibly destructive winds to the inland parts of the Pilbara into Saturday and Sunday.” “So we do have a cyclone watch warning that’s for gale force winds in the next 48 hours, that extends all the way to Paraburdoo and almost down to Newman.” Both the DFES and the bureau will provide updates throughout the day. Cyclone Advice is in place from Dampier to Onslow and inland to Tom Price and Nanutarra. Qantas and Virgin Australia cancelled flights in and out of Port Hedland and two evacuation centres have opened at JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub in South Hedland and Karratha Leisureplex in Karratha. More than a dozen local schools have been closed and Pilbara Ports are preparing to close the ports of Dampier and Varanus Island from 6pm after closing the Port Hedland port on Wednesday. People are urged to prepare an emergency kit, which includes enough canned food and water for five to seven days. 4. Woman Refuses to Share $20K Inheritance with Her Husband Because He ‘Loathed’ the Man It’s from Woman Refuses to Share $20K Inheritance with Her Husband Because He ‘Loathed’ the Man It’s from A woman who recently inherited $20,000 from her mom’s late partner says she doesn’t want to split the money with her husband. In a post shared to Reddit, the woman says that her mom, who is not from the United States, “happened to fall in love with an old American.” She writes that the man was a widower who was “above average financially” and lived “a decent lifestyle.” But the poster’s own husband was against the two being a couple. “Sometimes I feel he’s allergic to people finding happiness around him,” the woman adds of her husband. Related: Teen Says Her Stepsiblings Are Mad They Didn’t Get a ‘Grandkid Inheritance’ After Her Grandma’s ******** Cecilie_Arcurs / Getty Images Stock photo of older couple at kitchen table looking at a document He was so against it that the two even had a fight about it, with the husband being “cold” to the older man and disrespecting the woman’s mother in the process, the poster writes. “To cut the long story short, this man died after a brief illness (after being with my mum for about 4 years),” she adds. When he died, the man left $150,000 worth of property in the poster’s mother’s name. The mom then sold one of the properties, netting about $100,000 in profit and gifting her daughter $20,000 of that. Writing that she “happily accepted” the money, the woman adds that she planned on using it to purchase an investment property in Nigeria, where her family is from, but her husband “is demanding we use the money for ourselves (invest in our real estate business) which I am not comfortable with.” Related: Woman Promises Dying Dad She’ll Care for Her Ailing Mom — but After She Sees the Will, She Reconsiders “I understand what he owns is mine and vice versa, but this is the money of the same man he loathed,” she writes, adding: “Am I wrong for not wanting to share the money with him?” Reddit users are weighing in on the situation, with many advising the woman to do as she wishes with the money. One writes: “It’s totally up to you how you use that money. 7. Exclusive-Arm recruits from customers as it plans to sell its own chips Exclusive-Arm recruits from customers as it plans to sell its own chips By Stephen Nellis and Max A. Cherney (Reuters) – Arm has begun recruiting from its own customers and competing against them for deals as it pushes toward selling its own chips, according to people familiar with the matter and a document viewed by Reuters. Arm supplies the crucial intellectual property that firms such as Apple and Nvidia license to create their own central processing units (CPUs). It has also been seeking to expand its profits and revenues through a range of tactics, including considering whether to sell chips of its own. Arm appears to be ramping up that effort. The ***-based company has sought to recruit executives from licensees, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. And Arm is competing against Qualcomm, one of its largest customers, to sell data center CPUs to Meta Platforms, according to a person familiar with the matter. Arm spokesperson Erica Pompen declined to comment. The tech provider’s moves to build out its own chip business could upend an industry that has long viewed the company as a neutral player rather than a competitor, by forcing companies who rely on Arm technology to consider whether they will end up competing against the firm for business. Arm took a dispute with Qualcomm over its licensing rates to court in December, though the ***-based company lost key elements of that trial. During questioning at the trial, Arm CEO Rene Haas said, “we don’t build chips” when asked about the company’s ambitions outlined in a board proposal to do so. But Arm sought to hire executives from its customers as early as November, several weeks before that testimony, according to a document reviewed by Reuters. A recruiter working for Arm sent a message to an executive at an Arm customer seeking to hire employees. The note, a copy of which was viewed by Reuters, said Arm wanted to hire an executive to help with its “transformation from solely designing processor architecture (IP) to also selling its own silicon, with a focus on driving AI enablement in the data center” and on other devices. Arm recruiters have contacted other chip designers in Silicon Valley in an attempt to lure talent for the same purpose, according to two industry sources. Arm is also competing with Qualcomm for business. Qualcomm was in discussions with Facebook owner Meta Platforms to supply it with a data center central processing unit based on Arm’s computing architecture, but Arm has won at least some of that business, according to a person familiar with the matter. Another person familiar with the discussions said that talks between Meta and Qualcomm are ongoing. Story Continues The Financial Times earlier reported Arm’s deal with Meta. Qualcomm spokesperson Yelena Tebcherani and Meta spokesperson Melanie Roe declined to comment. Arm may also be seeking to compete with Nvidia, according to a research note published Thursday from J.P. Morgan’s Harlan Sur. Broadcom has won a contract for an effort by Arm and SoftBank Group to create a purpose-built artificial intelligence chip that will power data centers at the Japanese company, Sur wrote. The deal may be worth as much as $30 billion in revenue for Broadcom, Sur wrote. 9. Car ramming comes as migration at forefront of ******* elections Car ramming comes as migration at forefront of ******* elections Given the profile of the man accused in the suspected car-ramming attack in Munich, the incident will undoubtedly have an impact on Germany’s parliamentary election in ten days time. Farhad N, 24, came to Germany in 2016 from Afghanistan to seek asylum, which was rejected but he was given temporary permission to stay in Germany. For weeks now Germany’s upcoming election, brought by the collapse of ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government, has been embroiled in a fevered debate about migration. A number of violent incidents linked to migrants over the past year have led to increased support for the far-right AfD party. After a car ploughed into a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg killing six people and injuring at least 299 in December. The suspect was a 50-year-old Saudi asylum seeker who had been an outspoken critic of Islam. AfD leaders held political rallies there, blaming the government’s migration policy for the attack. Initially mainstream politicians called for calm. But the mood shifted after another attack in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg in January, in which a 28-year-old Afghan asylum seeker stabbed a group of small children in a park. A two-year-old child and a passer-by who tried to help died. The brutality of the attack shocked the country and mainstream politicians, particularly the conservatives, suddenly changed tack. In the televised duel between Scholz, of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), and his conservative rival Friedrich Merz leading centre-right party Christian Democrats (CDU), the first 30 minutes was devoted exclusively to the issue of migration. They were criticized afterwards for solely linking migration to criminality. Both politicians were remarkably hardline in their rhetoric, effectively arguing over who was the toughest to stop irregular migration. The two have taken harder lines on migration following a string of attacks involving asylum seeker suspects. Both believe that only by talking tough on borders, can they undermine support for far-right AfD that is polling second and has made immigration its signature issue. Frontrunner Friedrich Merz wants to close Germany’s borders to all asylum seekers. Critics say this undermines EU law, contravenes the ******* constitution and would be logistically impossible to police. Others worry that anti-migrant rhetoric legitimizes far-right ideas, boosts support for the AfD and stigmatizes people with non-******* heritage. Either way the AfD remains strong, polling at over 20%. The suffering of those who have been injured – and their families – will of course mainly occupy many people’s thoughts today. However, it is also the case that migration and public safety is now even more likely to dominate the final week of Germany’s election campaign. 10. AMP profit almost halves on advice business *****, cost of simplifying its operations AMP profit almost halves on advice business *****, cost of simplifying its operations The cost of simplifying AMP’s wealth management and banking businesses has slashed profits — and a payout to shareholders. AMP on Friday reported statutory net profit had plunged 43 per cent for the full financial year to the end of December to $150 million. It blamed the fall on business simplification spending and the loss on the ***** of its advice business, while also noting the previous year’s result also included a gain on the ***** of AMP Capital and SuperConcepts. Group underlying net profit was 15.1 per cent higher to $236m. AMP Bank was an underachiever, with underlying net profit dropping 22.6 per cent to $72m because of ongoing management of volumes and margins while it developed its new digital bank. AMP’s superannuation and investments business returned a 26.4 per cent rise in underlying net profit of $67m, reflecting positive market conditions, reduced variable costs and improved cashflows. It declared a final dividend of 1¢ a share, 20 per cent franked, taking the full-year dividend to 3¢ — down from 4.5¢ the previous year. Chief executive Alexis George said AMP was building positive performance momentum and remained focused on growth. “We sold and transitioned the advice business, hit cost targets and completed our $1.1 billion capital return program,” Mr George said. “Our wealth businesses are competing strongly in their chosen markets, driving positive performance, and we’re launching new offers including digital advice. “We saw improving trends in AMP Bank in the second half of the year, including a return to growth in the mortgage book as previously indicated. We continue to prioritise margins in a competitive environment, and this month’s launch of our new digital bank is an important way to start to address the funding and revenue mix.” AMP launched its small business and consumer digital bank this month, with 11,600 early sign ups ahead of its release. Overall costs were down 6.1 per cent to $648m. Source link #AMP #profit #halves #advice #business #***** #cost #simplifying #operations Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  12. New report unveils ‘staggering’ losses for LIV Golf New report unveils ‘staggering’ losses for LIV Golf The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund’s investment in LIV Golf could approach $5 billion by the end of this year based on financials reported by LIV Golf’s *** arm (and excluding its U.S. business). LIV Golf’s financials were put under the microscope by Money in Sport, a newsletter following the money that is published on Substack. LIV Golf’s *** arm, which manages all of LIV’s operations outside of the U.S., filed its 2023 financials this week. Among the notable figures: Revenues picked up in 2023 from $4.9 million to $37.1 million, with Australia providing 45 percent of the annual total ($16.6 million) based on the LIV Adelaide tournament. Tournament hosting fees made up 37 percent of revenues, the largest category of income. Broadcast rights income amounted to only $3 million (8 percent of total revenue). The expense side of the ledger isn’t pretty. One positive: the per tournament cost, which worked out to almost $10 million in 2022, fell to $7.3 million in 2023 as LIV expanded from six events to 14. The largest line item is legal and professional expenses. In 2023 LIV ***’s legal fees of $15.7 million were almost as high as PGA Tour’s legal expenses ($18.7 million). “It’s reasonable to conclude that LIV’s total legal fees are significantly higher than the fees incurred by PGA Tour,” Money in Sport wrote. LIV’s “Player indemnification” most likely relates to the penalties being handed out by the DP World Tour to members and former members who play on the LIV tour and continue to play occasional events on the European Tour. Those expenses of $6.9 million in 2022 reportedly were paid out in 2023, “which must have been a welcome upside in the European Tour’s books that year.” Operating losses grew from $244 million to $394 million. Overall, the losses being incurred by LIV are “piling up at a staggering rate, necessitating regular injections of new capital by the Saudi PIF.” How much? The total capital injected to LIV Golf *** topped $1.0 billion after a recent issue of new capital in December 2024. “The level of new share issues in 2024 of over $400 million implies no improvement in LIV’s 2024 financial performance (ex-USA) which won’t be filed for another 12 months,” Money in Sport wrote. Money in Sport concluded: “We know from the statutory reporting by the Jersey holding companies that the total capital approved by PIF is now at $3.9 billion, $1.0 billion of which relates to LIV Golf *** and the balance to LIV Golf Inc. in the U.S. Clearly the U.S. financials must be considerably worse than the rest of the world performance reported by LIV Golf in ***. PIF’s investment in LIV Golf could approach $5 billion by the end of this year, with further big bills on the horizon if they want to retain the top golfers as their contracts expire.” Story Continues Could this be a reason why the PIF’s governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan has been more willing to sit at the negotiating table with the PGA Tour? It seems plausible but only he and a few others really know. For Money in Sport’s complete update on LIV financials, including some helpful charts and graphs, click here. 14. Instagram is feeling the love with a surprise set of Valentine’s Day easter eggs Instagram is feeling the love with a surprise set of Valentine’s Day easter eggs Instagram just rolled out some Valentine’s Day easter eggs The launch includes an iOS exclusive Story sticker Plus you can theme DMs to the holiday, and give someone a nickname You could say love is in the air as Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, February 14. Similar to some special easter eggs rolled out ahead of ringing in 2025, Instagram is getting in the spirit and spreading some love. Between special effects for sharing ‘Notes,’ custom Story stickers, and outright themes for DMs, you can get in on some Valentine’s Day action whether or not you’re in a relationship. Though similar to the great debate of blue vs green bubbles, some of these limited-time features are exclusive to this with iOS. Kicking things off is a special treat for Instagram’s ‘Notes’ feature, which basically acts as a status for your account. It’s a place to share a thought, a call to action, or a message of love for your followers if you’re in the Valentine’s spirit. Certain words or phrases like ‘pookie,’ ‘ily,’ or simply ‘vday’ will enable a special visual effect. Think of a cupid’s arrow going through your note, a change in the color of the bubble, or hearts filling up your screen. (Image credit: Instagram) These are pretty fun, and Instagram’s dubbed these “Secret Phrases in Notes.” If you’re a fan of DMs (direct messages) or group chats, you can set the mood with three new themes: candy hearts, love, or sweethearts. If you feel like taking a potential move to the next level, you could slide into someone’s DMs with a theme. Results may vary, though. Beyond themes, you can give another account on Instagram a custom nickname – think ‘bestie’ – and there are few new reaction types beyond just double tapping to love a message someone sent. Arguably, what’s more exciting is the new features for Stories. For one, there are new font types and effects themed for Valentine’s Day. The best one, though, is exclusive to iOS. A limited edition, Valentine’s Day-themed vinyl record sticker for sharing music reads “My V-Day Jams.” If you scratch it, though, hearts will appear, and that’s just simply cute. (Image credit: Instagram) Much like other holiday-themed additions, Instagram’s latest feature drop for Valentine’s Day is rolling out globally and will be available through February 15, 2025. However, the new tapback reactions in DMs and the ability to give someone a nickname are here to stay, at least for now. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. One of three remaining in the country to permit skiers-only and where limited daily lift tickets, top-tier ski instructors (whose signature green coord ski jackets and pants are easily spotted on the mountain), and unparalleled customer service–curbside valets to help unload skis and complimentary overnight ski storage–elevate the experience further. Now, a brand-new Grand Hyatt and over 300 acres of new terrain, which debuted this season in the resort’s new Deer Valley East Village, promise a taste of exciting things to come as part of the multiyear Expanded Excellence project – the first major ground-up ski resort development in the U.S. in over 40 years that will more than double Deer Valley’s terrain ultimately making it one of the largest resorts in North America. From modish rooms and suites framed by Jordanelle Reservoir and Wasatch Mountains views, elevated afternoon “High Chocolate” service and speakeasy-style bar at the Hyatt to a buzzed-about new bubble lift and freshly minted ski runs across the street – here’s everything to know. Guests can access on-site ski lockers on the lower level, plus rentals and private in-room fittings provided by Ski Butlers. Additionally, they can enjoy ski valet services at the future village center. There’s a well-equipped fitness room (also with stellar views), and while a Haman-inspired spa is slated to open later this year offering eastern-inspired treatments, for now, the rooftop pool deck with its multiple hot tubs and fire pits is a go-to after getting off the mountain. The Helly Hansen boutique in the lobby is a convenient spot for picking up forgotten essentials like hats and gloves. It’s also home to the Deer Valley service desk, where guests can arrange lift tickets and ski lessons. Pets also enjoy perks with accessories and a dedicated in-room menu, but stays give back with a portion of fees supporting local animal rescue Nuzzles & Co. Street-side coffee shop Double ******* serves pastries and other fare, plus a selection of Utah’s famous blended ‘dirty sodas’ from 6 am, although more on signature restaurant Remington Hall and speakeasy-style bar Hidden Ace shortly. With its vintage arcade games, PS5 and Xbox, older kids will dig the Nexus Lounge, but with morning and afternoon sessions geared towards children aged 3 to 8, young families will love Camp Hyatt. With nightly rates from $799, plus taxes and fees (using World Of Hyatt points is another option for the Category 6 hotel) thanks to a partnership with the Military Installation Development Authority in Utah, 100 military-only Salute to Service rooms are available to active duty, national guard, reserve and retired armed forces personnel with rank-based discounted rates, use of a dedicated concierge lounge, NorthStar, and discounted activities for military families including 75% off day ski passes at Deer Valley. Ski 300 Acres of New Terrain–with More to Come The new Keetley Chair © Deer Valley/Keri Bridgwater Not technically ski-in, ski-out, the Hyatt is, however, a short walk or brief open-air shuttle ride away from the new East Village base and its much-buzzed-about Keetley Express Lift: a six-person chair with heated seats (clad in signature Deer Valley green) and a ‘bubble’ visor for protection on snow-heavy or inclement days that whisks skiers to the bottom terminal of the Sultan Express chairlift on Bald Mountain, seamlessly connecting them with the resort’s existing terrain. Two additional chairlifts (Hoodoo Express and Aurora) provide access to beginner-friendly trails and return connectivity to Deer Valley East Village. For a last run of the day from Silver Lake Lodge, McHenry is a long green cruiser that brings skiers neatly back to the Aurora chair, but for superlative views over Heber Valley and the Grand Hyatt below, ride the Sterling Express to Bald Mountain and take ****** diamond Stein’s Way to brand new blue run, Lady of the Lake. While 300 acres of new terrain and 500 additional day-skier parking spots debuted this winter, most new lifts and trails are expected by the 2025/26 winter season – including a large swathe of expanded terrain to the southeast of Bald Mountain. It’s also worth noting Deer Valley’s expansion will ultimately add 3,700 total acres to the resort, making it North America’s largest (at 6,746 ski-only acres) one spread across 10 peaks, with an impressive 16 total new lifts and a 10-passenger gondola (connecting East Village to the 9,350-foot Park Peak) upon completion. Ski with Champion and Other Exclusive On-Mountain Experiences Deer Valley resident and Olympic champion Trace Worthington For a premier ski destination, it makes sense that on-mountain experiences are equally exclusive and Deer Valley delivers here too – from its coveted First Tracks program with pre-lift opening access to the mountain for groups of up to 20 skiers (from $10,000) to its per-seat or full buyout cat skiing, which is about to launch later this season. 16. Volodymyr Zelensky says no peace deal without Ukraine involvement Volodymyr Zelensky says no peace deal without Ukraine involvement André Rhoden-Paul BBC News Getty Images Ukraine will not accept any peace deal agreed by the US and Russia without its involvement, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, after Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin pledged to begin negotiations to end the war. Trump said there was a “good possibility” of ending the conflict after he and the Russian president held a “lengthy” phone call on Wednesday. The US president also said he did not think it was “practical” for Ukraine to join Nato and it was “unlikely” it could return to its pre-2014 borders. Zelensky said his country would not be shut out of negotiations. The Kremlin said Ukraine would “one way or another” take part in the talks. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Zelensky, who also had an individual call with Trump on Wednesday, said: “We cannot accept it, as an independent country, any agreements (made) without us.” He said “Europeans need to be at the negotiating table too” and that he told Trump his priority was “security guarantees”, something he does not see without US support. In a later post on X discussing a call with the Polish prime minister Donald Tusk, he said negotiations could not begin without a united position from Ukraine, Europe and US and Ukraine. “I emphasised that Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength, with strong and reliable security guarantees, and that Nato membership would be the most cost-effective for partners,” he said. “I also warned world leaders against trusting Putin’s claims of readiness to end the war.” Ukraine’s European allies also rejected any move towards a forced settlement on Kyiv. *** Defence Secretary John Healey said “there can be no negotiation about Ukraine without Ukraine, and Ukraine’s voice must be at the heart of any talks”. ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected a “dictated peace” and his defence minister called it “regrettable” Washington was already making “concessions” to the Kremlin. In an address to reporters at Nato talks in Brussels, the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Washington of “appeasement” towards Russia. “We shouldn’t take anything off the table before the negotiations have even started because it plays to Russia’s court and it is what they want,” she said. EPA Donald Trump said he will likely meet with Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia Trump, who made the first publicly acknowledged White House call with Putin since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, said he would meet with Putin in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday in the Oval Office, he said Putin “wants it [the war] to end” and he expected a ceasefire soon. When asked if Ukraine was an equal member in the peace process, he added “they have to make peace”. His Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth at a press conference at the Nato summit confirm on Thursday peace negotiations “will be had with both” Putin and Zelensky” and described Trump as the “perfect dealmaker”. Hegseth, who on Wednesday said it was “unrealistic” to expect Ukraine to return to pre-2014 border and downplayed the prospect of Ukraine joining Nato, appeared to row back on his remarks, saying “everything was on the table” and the conversations were being led by the president. The defence secretary also suggested financial aid to Ukraine during negotiations could be on the table, as well as US troop numbers in Europe. Following the overthrow of Ukraine’s pro-Russian president in 2014, Moscow annexed the ****** Sea peninsula of Crimea and backed pro-Russian separatists in bloody fighting in eastern Ukraine. The conflict burst into all-out war when Russia invaded Ukraine nearly three years ago. Moscow’s attempts to take control of the capital Kyiv were thwarted, but Russian forces have taken around a fifth of Ukraine’s territory in the east and south, and have carried out air strikes across the country. 18. Trump signs sweeping reciprocal tariff plan, says more coming Trump signs sweeping reciprocal tariff plan, says more coming President Donald Trump overnight Thursday signed a presidential memorandum laying out his plan to impose “reciprocal tariffs” on foreign nations. “They charge us a tax or tariff and we charge them,” Mr Trump said during a press event in Oval Office. The president said that under the plan, the US will treat other countries’ non-tariff policies as unfair trade practices that warrant tariffs in response. Those include value-added taxes, or VATs, and other practices that the office of the US trade representative deems to be unfair trade limitations. Mr Trump said that foreign countries will not be allowed to send merchandise or other items to the US through another country. He also suggested that additional tariffs, including on auto imports, are on the way, Reuters reported. “We want a level playing field,” Trump said. VATs are consumption taxes levied at different stages of a supply chain. They are “trade neutral”, the non-partisan Tax Foundation noted Wednesday in a report accusing the Trump administration of mistakenly blaming VATs for a lack of US competitiveness in Europe. The reciprocal tariffs will not go into effect immediately. Mr Trump said that Howard Lutnick, his nominee for Commerce secretary, will lead the studies to determine the appropriate tariff levels for each affected country. Mr Lutnick said in the Oval Office that he expects those studies will be complete by April 1. In a Truth Social post sent after the event, Mr Trump said his plan will include provisions for “subsidies” and “Nonmonetary Tariffs and Trade Barriers” that other countries employ. “America has helped many Countries throughout the years, at great financial cost. It is now time that these Countries remember this, and treat us fairly,” Mr Trump wrote. The new tariffs will follow duties Mr Trump has already slapped on China, Canada and Mexico, as well as on imports of steel and aluminium. Mr Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico are currently on pause after both countries pledged to crack down on ******** crossings and drug trafficking at their respective borders with the US. As a presidential candidate, Mr Trump floated the possibility of imposing across-the-board tariffs on all US imports. But he also advocated for Congress to pass what he called the Trump Reciprocal Trade Act, which would empower him to slap tariffs on the goods of any country that has higher tariffs on US-made goods. Since taking office, Mr Trump has signalled his plans to impose tariffs on the European Union. He has highlighted US trade deficits with European partners and complained that EU nations do not purchase enough American cars or farm equipment. EU leaders have vowed to retaliate against new US tariffs, while warning that Mr Trump’s actions risk sparking a widespread trade war that ultimately hurts everyone. The new reciprocal tariffs were expected to come before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit with Trump at the White House on Thursday afternoon. 19. Gemini Advanced can now recall your past conversations to inform its responses Gemini Advanced can now recall your past conversations to inform its responses Google is making Gemini just a bit better. Starting today, the company’s chatbot will recall past conversations in an effort to provide more useful responses. “That means no more starting over from scratch or having to search for a previous conversation thread,” Google explains. “Plus, you can build on top of previous conversations or projects you’ve already started.” Google notes Gemini “may” indicate if it referenced a past conversation to formulate a response. If the idea of a chatbot recalling information about you makes you feel uncomfortable, Google says users can “easily review, delete or decide how long” Gemini retains their chat history. Additionally, it’s possible to disable this feature altogether from the My Activity panel. Gemini is not the first chatbot to include a memory feature. ChatGPT will “remember” things about you in certain contexts. For example, I recently asked OpenAI’s chatbot a question about Jeff Buckley’s vocal range, to which it later asked me if I was a fan of his music. When I said yes, a notification appeared stating “memory updated.” More broadly, building chatbots with long, reliable memories is part of the “agentic” AI future many companies, including Google and OpenAI, are building towards. At I/O 2024, for instance, Google debuted Project Astra, which featured a built-in memory, though it was limited to a relatively short window of time and could “mis-remember” things. Gemini’s new memory feature has begun rolling out in English to Gemini Advanced subscribers. It will become available in more languages over the coming weeks. 20. Trump delays reciprocal tariffs. Will they level the playing field? Trump delays reciprocal tariffs. Will they level the playing field? On Thursday, President Trump announced he is delaying the implementation of reciprocal tariffs against countries with similar taxes on American imports. FedWatch Advisors Founder and CIO Ben Emons and Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Economics Program director Philip Luck join Market Domination to discuss the latest on the delayed tariffs and how the market (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) is digesting the news. “This is obviously a tariff guidance that we’re getting. It’s like forward guidance from the Fed [Federal Reserve]…. We’re going to implement these tariffs in the next number of months and all these conditions, well, some of the conditions outlined. They’re going to be large, but, nonetheless, it’s a few months from now,” he notes. He explains that tariffs on “over $300 billion in goods” from China would impact Consumer Price Index (CPI) data and could lead to higher inflation in the coming months. Luck, also the CSIS’s Scholl Chair in International Business, disagrees with the idea of tariffs leveling the playing field. “I think it’s an incorrect assertion that the playing field is not level… Our current multinational tariff rates, as well as our bilateral tariff rates for free trade agreements, have been long negotiated over the last 70 or more years,” he says. Emons also addresses inflation risks, emphasizing that consumers “will see some follow through on actual inflation in the next few months.” He notes that tariffs could further drive inflation higher, as shown by recent CPI and Producer Price Index (PPI) data. Seagate hard drives that were previously used in ******** Chia cryptocurrency mining farms have been resold as new by unsuspecting retailers. An investigation by Heise indicates large quantities of high-mileage drives have surfaced in the market, particularly in Europe, Australia, Thailand, and Japan. These drives, often datacenter-grade Seagate Exos models, have been found with thousands of operational hours despite being marketed as brand new. Chia farms and the flood of second-hand drives At the peak of the cryptocurrency *****, mining operations required vast storage capacity, leading to a surge in demand for high-end HDDs. However, as the profitability of Chia mining declined, many farms shut down and sold their hardware. These hard drives were then repackaged and reintroduced into the market, deceiving customers. 24. Blue Jays open training camp in Dunedin Blue Jays open training camp in Dunedin DUNEDIN – One big question hung in the warm, humid Florida air Thursday as the Toronto Blue Jays held their first official workout at spring training. Will the team be able to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a long-term extension before his deadline for contract talks arrives early next week? “We’ve worked extremely hard on keeping Vlad here for a long time,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said. “That desire is strong and we will continue to do that.” Guerrero has set a negotiating deadline for Tuesday — the first day of full-squad workouts — before he puts his future plans to the back burner until the end of the season. The 25-year-old first baseman is entering the final year of his contract and can become a free agent in the fall. Both sides have expressed a desire to work out an extension, but it appears talks may go down to the wire. Story continues below advertisement “We all want Vlad to be here,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “Ross has said that, I’ve said that, I think that we’ll just keep working toward that and hopefully it happens.” Related Videos 0:29 Bo Bichette going viral for openly flirting with trade Previous Video Next Video It was the hot talking point at the player development complex as pitchers and catchers reported for workouts and early training sessions. After reaching the wild-card round in three of four years, Toronto fell to last place in the American League East in 2024 with a 74-88 record. “I think on paper we’re better,” Schneider said. “I think there’s a lot of guys that want to put last year behind us and have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder too.” The addition of Scherzer, an eventual first-ballot Hall of Famer, provides some depth to a rotation anchored by Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt. More on Sports More videos Hoffman will likely take on the closer’s role after Jordan Romano’s departure and Santander provides some needed thump in the heart of the batting order, which may see some shuffling depending on how things go this spring. Trending Now Vietnam bartender arrested over tourist deaths linked to tainted alcohol Trump set to impose sweeping reciprocal tariffs within hours: ‘The big one’ Scherzer drew a crowd during the morning throwing session and his trademark intensity was already on point. “His competitiveness and his experience is going to be great for an already veteran staff,” Schneider said. “It’s going to be great for (pitchers) like Bowden (Francis) and for Alek (Manoah), guys like Jake Bloss. It’s just awesome to add him.” With a healthy Bo Bichette — who’s also in a contract year — looking to bounce back from a down year in 2024, there is optimism that the team can turn things around. An extension would ease anxiety about this team’s long-term plans and give everyone around the club some spring in their step. If he decides to play out the year and try his hand at free agency, he’ll be motivated to have another big season. Either way, it’s shaping up to be an interesting spring and 2025 campaign. “I think it’s going to be good,” Berrios said. “Hopefully (he’s) going to get a deal done soon.” This report by The ********* Press was first published Feb. 13, 2025. &copy 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Blue #Jays #open #training #camp #Dunedin Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
