  1. Apple, Google restore TikTok to their app stores Apple, Google restore TikTok to their app stores Less than a month after pulling TikTok from their U.S. app stores in response to a new law that requires TikTok to divest from its China-based owner, the social media platform was returning to both the Apple and Google Play stores Thursday night. A Google spokesperson told CBS News that TikTok was restored to its app store. The app also appeared available in the Apple store. CBS News has reached out to Apple for comment. The moves come after Bloomberg reported that Attorney General Pam Bondi notified Apple and Google that the new law would not be immediately enforced. There was growing concern among lawmakers and national security officials that TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company ByteDance could use the immensely popular short-form video app to spy on Americans or manipulate the content they see on the platform. A bipartisan bill was signed into law by former President Joe Biden in April 2024 gave TikTok until Jan. 19 to sever ties with ByteDance or lose access to app stores and web-hosting services in the U.S. TikTok and ByteDance challenged the law, but it was upheld by the Supreme Court days before it took effect, which cited risks to national security over the app’s data collection practices. When the deadline came last month, TikTok briefly and voluntarily shut down service in the U.S. The app was also pulled from the Apple and Google Play stores, even though the Biden administration, in its waning hours, said it would be up to the Trump administration to enforce it. However, just one day later, on the same day as his inauguration, President Trump signed an executive order that called on the Justice Department not to enforce the law for a ******* of at least 75 days. TikTok had remained operational for those in the U.S. who had already downloaded the app, though updates were unavailable as long as it was inaccessible in the app stores. Mr. Trump told reporters Thursday that there are many people interested in acquiring TikTok and he was hopeful that a deal could be made. “We’ll have to probably get approval from China to do it,” Mr. Trump said. “I think China will be interested, because it’s to their benefit, too.” Caitlin Yilek Caitlin Yilek is a politics reporter at CBSNews.com, based in Washington, D.C. 3. Is ChatGPT Plus actually worth it? I compared OpenAI’s paid subscription to the free version and the results might surprise you Is ChatGPT Plus actually worth it? I compared OpenAI’s paid subscription to the free version and the results might surprise you Like many others, I was an early adopter of ChatGPT and enjoyed exploring what it could do. When OpenAI debuted the ChatGPT Plus subscription, I was skeptical about whether I needed the greater access and additional features it promised. However, as the subscription option arrived, many of us using the free version started to encounter slower responses, unexpected usage caps, and other frustrations. This was likely just because of the growing popularity of ChatGPT, though when particularly annoyed, I did speculate about a dark conspiracy. Either way, $20 a month started to seem reasonable, especially since testing out new ChatGPT features has been a professional need as much as something I personally want to do. I hesitated for a little while. If I had a dollar for every time I almost upgraded, I’d have had enough to pay for ChatGPT Plus for several years. Still, within a few weeks, I clicked on upgrade, and I can say I haven’t regretted it at all. Plus access Since signing up, I’ve employed ChatGPT Plus, and its benefits have been extensive in my personal life. I can use it to come up with dinner ideas, entertain children, make New Year’s Resolutions, and perform many other tasks. A lot of those would be more difficult or impossible without ChatGPT Plus. When you sign up, the first and most obvious difference you’ll note is that you have access to the ChatGPT models in beta. Currently, the default model is GPT-4o, but with a subscription, you can try the logic-heavy o1 model, the o3-mini model, which is even faster at advanced logic and reasoning, and the o3-mini-high model, which goes even further. I can always tell, even without looking, when a response uses the ChatGPT Plus-only models. The responses are sharper and more insightful, and they often feel like they have been run through an actual human editor. If I stick to GPT-4o, I still benefit from subscribing to ChatGPT Plus. Those dreaded message limits disappear, which, if you’ve ever had ChatGPT cut you off just when a conversation was getting interesting, is very frustrating. If you hit the limit, the free tier sends you down to the GPT-4o-mini model. That model is fine, but it feels threadbare compared to the richer experience of GPT-4o. Similarly, the limits on uploading files and making and analyzing images also disappear when you subscribe. You might still hit a cap, but you’d have to really work at it. Plus features There are also options for GPT-4o exclusive to ChatGPT Plus. You can converse with ChatGPT in both standard and advanced voice modes. You can also play with customizing ChatGPT’s abilities by making custom GPTs. The Tasks feature for ChatGPT that lets you schedule out missions for the AI in the future is also only available if you have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus, as it’s currently in beta testing. There is a laundry list of other ChatGPT features that were on the same list but have since migrated to the free tier. ChatGPT Plus subscribers were once the only ones able to use the editable Canvas page, the latest DALL-E image-making model, the web browsing function, and several other tools. Even the GPT-4o-mini model is a huge step up from earlier free-tier models, closing the quality gap significantly. A fair argument against ChatGPT Plus is that those exclusive perks don’t stay exclusive. So, if you’re the type of person who likes waiting for features to trickle down, maybe Plus isn’t necessary. But if you’re someone who wants to be that early adopter and play with the latest models and features immediately, then the subscription still holds a lot of value. It’s not just about what features exist; it’s about when you get them and how smoothly they work. Plus more If you’re a casual user who just wants ChatGPT for quick questions, occasional brainstorming, or settling silly debates (like whether pineapple belongs on pizza), you’re probably fine sticking with the free tier. It’s gotten much better over time, and OpenAI keeps pushing updates that make it a pretty robust option. But if you rely on ChatGPT every day for any number of projects at work or home, I’d say that ChatGPT Plus is absolutely worth it. The speed, model quality, unlimited access, and extra tools make a noticeable difference. When I want a cute image to go with a hand-written greeting card, I don’t want to worry about hitting a cap on DALL-E use. And if I want to know if the confusing array of parking signs beside my car say my car won’t be towed in the next hour, I want the most powerful and logical AI model available. If you like using ChatGPT, the real question is how much you use it and whether you’re willing to wait for features to roll out to everyone. If you’re someone who wants the best AI experience right now, ChatGPT Plus is a no-brainer. If you don’t mind waiting for features to trickle down, the free version will probably get there. Just to be sure, I asked ChatGPT’s most advanced model if the subscription was worth it, and ChatGPT declared that if it were human, it would happily pay. 6. Family of fatally shot Marius Ciolac ‘will never have answers’ Family of fatally shot Marius Ciolac ‘will never have answers’ Olimpia Zagnat BBC News, Derby Supplied Marius Ciolac died in hospital after being shot in the lower abdomen, the inquest heard The sister of a man who was fatally shot at a police station has said she will spend the rest of her life with “questions and doubts” about what happened. An inquest jury concluded Marius Ciolac was lawfully killed when he was shot outside Derby’s Ascot Drive police station on the morning of 7 October 2022. Mr Ciolac had arrived holding a knife in one hand and a bag with a live cat in the other, caused damage to the station and then did not respond to officers’ commands before numerous attempts were made to stop him prior to the shooting. Speaking in Romanian to the BBC, his sister Andreea Ciolac said: “Everything that happened… no-one will ever be able to explain to us why.” Footage showed the moments before Mr Ciolac was fatally shot The inquest heard from witnesses who were at the police station that day, including officers who responded. A separate investigation into Mr Ciolac’s death, led by the police watchdog, found the officers’ use of force was “appropriate in the circumstances”. The conclusion was read out in court on Thursday, with Mr Ciolac’s siblings – Andreea and Alin – listening in via video-link. They had been sitting through hours and hours of evidence, hoping they would finally be able to understand what happened to their brother three years after the shooting. But his sister fears the motives behind what Mr Ciolac did that day will forever remain unknown. “[Marius’s death] is something we will have to live with for the rest of our lives,” she said. “Especially when you don’t know why, when you don’t know what caused it. “It would’ve been different if it was an accident or if he was sick. “Everything that happened… no-one will ever be able to explain to us why.” ‘Prince with blue eyes’ Mr Ciolac and his three other siblings “didn’t have the childhood other people had”, Ms Ciolac said. He was born in Cernavoda, Romania, and was the only sibling to be taken by his father when the parents separated. The inquest heard Mr Ciolac was the youngest brother in his family, growing up in a “very poor” household with an “abusive” father. “Dad took him because he was the only one who looked like him,” Ms Ciolac said. “He had blue eyes like him. He took him because he said it was ‘his prince with blue eyes’.” Mr Ciolac’s family told the inquest he was then sent to an orphanage, while two of his siblings were sent to another, where they stayed for seven years. But they eventually reunited in their 20s after Mr Ciolac found his siblings on Facebook in 2010, while living in Spain. Ms Ciolac told the BBC Mr Ciolac lived in Romania for a while and was getting financial help from their mum, who was working abroad. “We tried to help him but he didn’t want to be helped,” she added. “Perhaps in his heart he hated me and Alin because we grew up with mum, and he was taking dad’s side. “Mum was sending him money from abroad while he was in Romania. “She sent him money for driving lessons. We tried to help him when he needed us. “He suffered just like all of us have.” Supplied Mr Ciolac loved his two cats, which he would often refer to as “my children” During his time in England, Marius was telling the family he was doing well and earning good money. He lived in Osmaston Road in Derby and was working as builder, but also had a passion for tattoos. But above all, Mr Ciolac loved his two cats, which he would often refer to as “my children”. “He was normal and calm,” his sister said. “Maybe I could’ve done something differently, we could’ve talked more, and spent more time together. “But unfortunately we can’t do that now.” Recalling the day she found out about her brother’s death, Ms Ciolac said: “We were left in shock and we’re very sorry. “We can’t explain it.” She said as far as she was aware, Mr Ciolac never had psychological or psychiatric help. “We don’t have answers,” Ms Ciolac said. “We’ve watched the video and it’s obvious [what happened on that day outside the police station]. “We wanted to find out what he had against the police. We know that a week [prior to the shooting] he had an argument with a guy, but we didn’t know much. “A girl who went to get a tattoo done by him said he had a ‘surviving kit’. “We heard about a note he had on him, talking about corruption, police, institutions. I don’t know what was going on in his head, but it wasn’t anything good.” Supplied Mr Ciolac’s resting place in Onesti, Romania Ms Ciolac said she made an effort to set up the repatriation of Mr Ciolac’s body to Romania, but could not attend the ******** as she was pregnant with her third child at the time. “He’s buried where dad is buried,” she said. “We took him there because he’s now closer to home. “Mum is the most affected by it – he was her child. She doesn’t know what was going on in his head. “Now [speaking as a mother myself], I think what mum went through when she lost a child is the worst possible thing. “We’ve been told clearly that police did what they were supposed to do. We need to make peace with it now.” Source link #Family #fatally #shot #Marius #Ciolac #answers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. Anthony Albanese optimistic Australia can avoid Trump’s latest US tariffs Anthony Albanese optimistic Australia can avoid Trump’s latest US tariffs Australia is optimistic it can avoid Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs because of a 20-year free trade agreement, after the US President announced he would slap “reciprocal” import duties on trading partners who don’t behave “fairly”. In a move that could spark a global trade war, Mr Trump has ordered officials to examine imposing tariffs on a “country-by-country” basis. The new tariffs, he said, would target unfair behaviour by trading partners who apply higher taxes to specific American goods than the US applies to the same products from those countries. “I have decided for purposes of fairness that I will charge a reciprocal tariff. We want a level playing field,” Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He wrote on Truth Social: “It is fair to all, no other country can complain and, in some cases, if a country feels that the United States would be getting too high a tariff, all they have to do is reduce or terminate their tariff against us”. Australia and the US have had a free trade agreement since 2005, under which most tariffs have been reduced or removed. But the new order targets value-added taxes, which could impact Australia because of the GST. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was cautiously optimistic when asked at a press conference on Friday. “I note that this morning there has been a statement about reciprocal tariffs. Australia has none on the US. We have a Free Trade Agreement,” he said. Earlier this week, Mr Trump agreed to consider Mr Albanese’s pitch to exempt Australia from his broad-based tariffs on steel and aluminum, noting the decades-long trade surplus. Mr Albanese was optimistic on Friday he had made a “very strong case”. “In President Trump’s own words, he said Australia would be given great consideration for an exemption. We continue to put forward our case which is a very simple one. Australia has zero tariffs on US goods coming into Australia,” he said. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton on Friday said US tariffs on *********** steel and aluminum would “damage the relationship” between the two countries. “I don’t support these tariffs at all,” he said. “There is a deal, I’m sure, to be done with the United States, and there is a lot Australia has to offer. “The aluminum sector, the steel sector, are incredibly important to our economy, and it’s a big export market for us, and it should continue.” The fragile tariff negotiations appeared under threat earlier this week after the Trump administration accused Australia of breaking a 2019 verbal commitment to limit aluminum exports. Trade Minister Don Farrell said he was not aware of the unofficial agreement done between former PM Scott Morrison and the last Trump Administration, and has stressed Australia has complied with all the arrangements mandated by the US. “What you have to understand, of course, is that post those arrangements being entered into by Mr Morrison or (former trade minister Simon) Birmingham, we’ve had COVID that changed the scene and, of course, we’ve had the war between Russia and Ukraine,” he said on Thursday. “But I’m very confident that we comply with all of our obligations in terms to supply into the United States. “I think it’s worth noting that in the last 12 months, the caps that have been talked about, we have not exceeded.” Source link #Anthony #Albanese #optimistic #Australia #avoid #Trumps #latest #tariffs Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  8. Giants looking to sell limited stake in team Giants looking to sell limited stake in team The New York Giants are putting a limited stake in the team on the market, with the process likely to set a record for an NFL franchise valuation, Sports Business Journal reported on Thursday. The Giants, regarded as one of the most valuable sports teams in the world because of their history and the New York City market, have hired Moelis & Co. as their banker, according to the report. The team’s majority stake and control will remain with the Mara family. The team’s president is John Mara, whose grandfather Tim Mara founded the team in 1925. While the reason for exploring a limited partner is not known, the timing comes after the NFL approved a policy in August that allows private equity firms to buy up to 10 percent of teams. The Giants organization and Moelis & Co. declined to comment to Sports Business Journal. Forbes’ most recent valuation of the Giants came in at $7.3 billion, while CNBC pegged it at $7.85 billion. For a recent comparison, the newly minted Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles had ranged in value from $6.6 billion (Forbes) to $7 billion (CNBC). Then in December, the Eagles sold a combined 8 percent to two families in separate transactions valuing the franchise at $8.1 billion and $8.3 billion, respectively. Philadelphia owner Jeffrey Lurie still controls 85 percent of the team under terms of the sales. The Eagles are now at the top of the pro football world, while the Giants have been among the NFL’s worst teams in recent seasons. Three private equity firms got NFL approval in December to make deals to acquire limited partnerships in teams. Arctos Partners purchased 10 percent of the Buffalo Bills, and Ares Management bought a 10 percent stake in the Miami Dolphins and related assets. The Bills were valued by CNBC at $5.35 billion before the *****, while the Dolphins were valued at $8.1 billion. –Field Level Media Source link #Giants #sell #limited #stake #team Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  10. ‘Steroids gave me heart failure at 30’ ‘Steroids gave me heart failure at 30’ Avatar1338 Joey Farrell is one of an estimated 500,000 people in the *** using anabolic steroids He had heart failure at 30 and believes taking steroids will reduce his life by 20 years – but Joey Farrell continues using muscle-building drugs for “the sake of his career”. The professional bodybuilder knows the health warnings and harmful long-term effects, and while he accepts he sounds “contradictory”, he warned others not to follow his example. Meanwhile former Love Island contestant Tom Powell had breast tissue removed after taking steroids, and also said people shouldn’t start doing it “whatsoever”. A professor that specialises in steroid abuse has called for regional centres of excellence to tackle what he says is becoming a growing public health concern. Former Love Island contestant Tom Powell warns against using steriods There’s no official data of how many people in the *** take anabolic steroids but recent estimates suggest about 500,000. Joey first took steroids aged 20 after getting into bodybuilding – and started injecting them a year later. But in January last year, the 31-year-old said doctors were “dumbfounded” to find out he had heart failure after some blood tests – with many GPs not specialists in steroid use. “The results were really, really bad,” said Joey. “My troponin levels, which is a heart attack marker, were extremely high.” After a heart scan, Joey said clinicians diagnosed him with steroid-induced dilated cardiomyopathy – a condition that causes the heart to enlarge and weaken, making it difficult to pump blood. “My heart was weak,” he added. Joey Farrell trains at the gym every day as he prepares for bodybuilding competitions all over the world “They didn’t really know what to say because of my age. This is something you’d find in like a 75-year-old man that’s smoked and drunk all of their life.” Joe, originally from west Wales, thought his bodybuilding career was over. “Bodybuilding’s my life,” he said. “That time was dark.” Sixteen weeks later and against medical advice, he was back competing but said he cut back on his steroid use. What are steroids and are they ********? Anabolic steroids – a man-made substance that copies the male hormone testosterone – are prescription-only class C drugs that are legal for personal use only on medical advice. They are ******** to possess, import or export and if it’s believed you’re supplying or selling them, including giving to friends, the maximum penalty is a 14-year prison sentence. Seizures of anabolic steroids increased by 26% in the *** last year to 995,830 doses, most were found at the *** border. There is no official medical research or guidance on how to reduce risks of taking them. As there’s no clinical guidance, some bodybuilders experiment with different compounds, with advice passed between steroid users. This is a practice bodybuilders call “bro science”, although there has been no official scientific analysis. Avatar1338 Joey Farrell became a professional full-time bodybuilder after winning this competition in Austria last summer “A bodybuilder is doing stuff that a doctor would never believe or dream of doing – it’s a trial and error approach,” added Joey, originally from Tenby in Pembrokeshire but now living in Preston. These unsupervised medical trials have led to the emergence of what are known as image performance enhancing drugs. ‘I’m shaving at least 20 years off my life’ Although he said he still injects them because of his career, Joey said his heart scare has made him more conscious of the risks. But he accepts risks exist, however careful he is. Joey now has regular blood and heart scans, has changed his diet and lifestyle but admitted: “I’m fully aware that whatever my expected age would have been, I’m shaving at least 20 years off that.” Risks associated with taking anabolic steroids range from infertility and erectile dysfunction to addiction and baldness. Former Love Island star Tom Powell is urging people not to start taking steroids for their appearance after he suffered side effects Former Love Island contestant Tom Powell also experienced psychological side effects. “I’ve been depressed, I’ve been sad, angry, had night terrors, night sweats,” said the 33-year-old, who started using steroids eight years ago. “I wanted to fight people. I was up and down. I was crying and I was angry. I wanted to fight the world.” Tom experienced another side effect as he began to grow breasts. After appearing in 2016 edition of the hit ITV show Love Island, Tom livestreamed surgery of having breast tissue removed after it became painful. “I know 20 lads that have this done too and more are contemplating it,” added Tom, from Port Talbot. Tom Powell said he didn’t just suffer psychological side effects after taking steroids but physical ones too as he had excess breast tissue removed He said he now uses a much lower steroid dose and has warns against taking them. “I don’t think it’s worth it whatsoever,” he said. “If they realised the side effects, I don’t know if they would take the compounds.” ‘It’s my place to protect other people’ “Just because I make this decision, it doesn’t mean you should make that mistake,” Joey said. “Do you want to be talking to a camera about being in heart failure and telling everyone that you take steroids? Not really. “Maybe it’s now my place to protect and prevent it happening to other people.” It’s not just his workouts that Joey Farrell plans meticulously, his diet is carefully mapped out so he feels ready for competitions Official data suggests more than half of the 20,000 people using Welsh needle exchanges are steroid users. Public Health Wales and Bangor University research found 14% of the 1.5 million men in Wales have taken steroids. “There are issues with knowing about the longer-term side effects and longer-term consequences of using them,” said research author Dr Chris Saville. A substance misuse expert said steroid demand and availability had increased in the last 20 years and the long-term impact is an increasing public health concern. Jim McVeigh wants regional centres of excellence – linking doctors, pharmacists and needle exchange programmes with experts on steroids to help people reduce and stop their usage safely. “The majority of people aren’t engaged in services,” said the emeritus substance use professor at Manchester Metropolitan University. “We’ve much higher levels of people engaged with syringe programmes but still most people choose not to. “We need to avoid preaching. It’s listening and hearing their concerns, providing evidence and having an open dialogue. “The decision for behaviour change or risk reduction is by that individual – the hope is they pick the healthy option.” In Wales, ministers have spent £67m on substance misuse services while the *** government hasn’t commented. The Welsh government also said it has trained agencies in Wales, including in the “identification of steroids leads”. 14. TikTok is back in Apple’s App Store in the US TikTok is back in Apple’s App Store in the US TikTok is once again available in Apple’s App Store in the United States. The app disappeared from both Apple and Google’s stores January 19, 2025, as a nationwide ban briefly took effect. But though the app’s service was quickly restored after President Donald Trump promised not to enforce the ban, the app had remained unavailable for download in US app stores. Apple has now reversed course. Bloomberg reported the company made the decision after a letter from US Attorney General Pam Bondi. Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.TikTok is still not officially available in Google’s Play Store, though the company has recently encouraged Android users to sideload the app. It’s still not clear what will ultimately happen to TikTok longterm. Trump has repeatedly said he wants to strike a “deal” that will allow the company to remain operational in the US, including arrangements that would give the US government a stake in the company. 18. Adrian Lam’s Leopards make history in low-scoring epic Adrian Lam’s Leopards make history in low-scoring epic Coach Adrian Lam has hailed Leigh’s finals-like fight after they kicked off the Super League season with a remarkable 1-0 win over Wigan in golden point. The Leopards gave Papua New Guinea great Lam a rollercoaster ride in a unique season-opening contest on a bitterly cold Thursday night (local time), battling to a scoreless draw with Wigan. It marked the first time in Super League history both sides had failed to score after 80 minutes of a match. Gareth O’Brien landed a long-range drop goal in the first ******* of extra time as the Leopards shocked their neighbours in front of a crowd of 21,748 at the Brick Community Stadium. It was the first time Leigh had beaten the Warriors since their promotion back to the top flight in 2022, and also their first victory at Wigan for 42 years. “It’s a nice feeling, a great achievement,” Lam said. “I’ll take the one point to get the two. “It was a great game to watch, quite physical. It had a ‘finals’ feel to it. “I’m not a great supporter of golden point, though. I think if both teams play like that you deserve a point.” Lam included five new signings in his match-day squad. “It takes time to bring them together, so I wanted some indication they would turn up for each other. There was plenty of that,” he said. The Warriors and Warrington Wolves will head to Las Vegas in March, squaring off as part of the NRL’s showpiece weekend in the United States. Lam, who captained Papua New Guinea at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, has been rising up the coaching ranks since a stint as Wayne Bennett’s assistant at St George Illawarra. Last year, the former halfback admitted a role with the new NRL franchise in Port Moresby held a lot of appeal in the long-term future. Lam is contracted to coach the Leigh Leopards until 2027. 23. AMP’s first-half profit falls 43pct to $150 million AMP’s first-half profit falls 43pct to $150 million AMP shares have plunged to a three-month low after the wealth manager posted a $150 million first-half bottom-line net profit, down 43 per cent from a year ago. The drop reflected a loss on the ***** of its advice business in 2024, and the impact on its year-ago result of the ***** of AMP Capital and self-managed super fund administration and software business, as it trimmed down its business. AMP’s underlying profit, which excludes those impacts, was up 26.4 per cent to $67 million in the December 31 half. AMP chief executive Alexis George said that overall the firm continued to deliver on both financial performance and business performance. Its wealth division was improving and its platform business, which enables advisers and clients to build a personalised investment portfolio, was attracting inflows. The platform business saw underlying profit climb 18.9 per cent to $107 million, while profit from its superannuation and investments division grew 26.4 per cent to $67 million. The banking arm, however, saw its underlying profit drop 22.6 per cent to $72 million. “When it comes to banks, I think we all know it’s a more challenging environment for small banks,” Ms George told analysts in a conference call on Friday.”But we’ve delivered modest growth in the second half, as indicated, and continue to focus on margin. “We continue to focus on driving efficiency and looking for those niche opportunities to add both margins and volume.” While AMP has offered banking services for years, it officially opened a new small business and consumer digital-only bank this week. “We do see it as an opportunity in that smaller micro (businesses) space where not many others are focused,” Ms George said, referring to businesses with fewer than 20 employees. “As I said, it’s digital only. It’s not digital first, it is digital only, and it really is quite a unique proposition.” “It’s also important in that it creates diversity in our customer base, but also in our deposit funding, as well as adding transaction accounts for personal customers.” AMP has also been rolling out artificial intelligence across its contact centres and is using the technology to offer some solutions for advisors meeting with clients. 24. Structure At ******** Shipyard May Point To China’s Next Aircraft Carrier’s Capabilities Structure At ******** Shipyard May Point To China’s Next Aircraft Carrier’s Capabilities We may have just gotten our first sight of China’s next-generation aircraft carrier, generally referred to as the Type 004 — or at least a portion of it. Construction work at a shipyard in Dalian, in China’s Liaoning province, reveals a module that is consistent with an aircraft carrier — which would be China’s fourth once it enters service — although there remain questions about the precise nature of the object, which may be intended for testing rather than as part of the finished warship. The module in question, apparently a section of the flight deck, is seen in satellite imagery provided by Google Earth and which first began to circulate on ******** defense forums. The imagery dates back to May 2024 but was only recently published. Close to the module are mockups of a J-15 Flanker series carrier-based fighter and a Z-8 series naval helicopter. Mockups of this kind are frequently used in carrier development work in China, both on land and at sea. A wider view of the module at Dalian, in a satellite image dated May 17, 2024. Google Earth Well, you all know how sceptical I am usually, but this could actually be proof for the first time that 004 is under construction! [Hidden Content] — @Rupprecht_A (@RupprechtDeino) February 13, 2025 Provided that what appears as lines running along the module are trenches for catapult tracks, which seems the most likely explanation, this would suggest that the Type 004 will have two waist catapults, in addition to the two bow catapults. This would match the arrangement of the U.S. Navy’s Ford class and would add an extra catapult compared with China’s third carrier, the Type 003 Fujian, which has a single catapult in the waist position. A view of the USS Gerald R. Ford showing the four catapults found on U.S. Navy supercarriers. U.S. Navy The module is located within the sprawling Dalian complex, the specific location being Xianglujiao, which is where the dry dock for China’s earlier Type 001 Liaoning and Type 002 Shandong aircraft carriers is also located. A satellite image dated January 2024 shows that work on the module had begun by this point. Google Earth Three J-15s (or J-15 mockups) seen in a satellite image of the same location, dated April 2022. Google Earth TWZ spoke to Alex Luck, a journalist who closely follows the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), for his assessment of the module. Noting that it’s probably too early to make any concrete assessment about the role of this particular module, Luck says that the Dalian location makes sense for a new carrier, with the adjacent dock already used for carrier construction and maintenance. On the other hand, as Luck points out, the first modules spotted for the Fujian in 2018 were lower hull segments, rather than a flight deck module, which seems to be what we are looking at here. China’s third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, shortly before it went to sea for the first time in April 2024. via X via X Since lower hull segments make more sense in terms of procedural assembly, it could be the case that this is not a production module but instead a test or demonstrator segment for the future flattop. There is a precedent for this, with a demonstrator module for the future Fujian noted at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, back in 2013. With that in mind, a similar approach for the Type 004, involving test portions of the new carrier, to iron out any early problems with the design wouldn’t be entirely surprising. A demonstrator module for the future Fujian at Jiangnan Shipyard in 2013. via ******** Internet As for the presence of the aircraft mockups next to the new module, Luck observes that these are likely not necessarily directly related to the new carrier, with the same ones probably having been used for the Liaoning and the Shandong beforehand. Previous rumors had suggested that the Type 004 might be built at a different location, namely Dalian Dagushan, located across the bay from Xianglujiao, so that too raises some questions about the purpose of the module. Dalian Dagushan is where the most recent Type 055 ‘super-destroyers’ and Type 052DL destroyers are being built but, again, we don’t know for sure that the Type 004 will also be built here. The respective locations of Xianglujiao (where the Type 004 module was seen) and Dalian Dagushan. Google Earth Previously, there had also been speculation that the Type 004 might be constructed at Jiangnan, which produced the Fujian, and this shipyard also offered some concept art depicting a new aircraft carrier design. The carrier shown in that artwork had some broad external similarities to the U.S. Navy’s Ford class and France’s future New Generation Aircraft Carrier, although, at this stage, we really can’t say what the Type 004 will look like. An artist’s concept of a future ******** aircraft carrier. ******** internet via @HenriKenhmann Whatever the role of the new module, there’s certainly a strong possibility that it’s related to China’s next carrier, with previous suggestions that the Type 004 could enter service sometime in the late 2020s. When it does finally appear, the Type 004 is expected to be a notably more advanced design than Liaoning and Shandong, which are by now well established with the PLAN fleet, as well as the Fujian, the country’s first domestically produced carrier, which is still preparing for operational service. Launched in 2022, the Fujian began sea trials in mid-2024 and is expected to enter operational service in 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Like Fujian — and in contrast to the two previous carriers — the Type 004 will be equipped to launch aircraft via catapults. The PLAN’s two in-service carriers, the Shandong and the Liaoning, are both short takeoff but arrested recovery, or STOBAR, types with prominent ‘ski jump’ takeoff ramps. Catapults offer manifold advantages, especially when it comes to launching aircraft at higher gross weights, which translates to larger fuel and ordnance loads. They can also generally accommodate a wider array of aircraft types, too. This includes larger and slower designs, like the still-in-development KJ-600 carrier-based airborne early warning and control aircraft, as well as smaller ones, such as drones. A satellite view of a prototype KJ-600. via ******** Internet Another satellite image shows a KJ-600 prototype in the green primer paint now frequently seen on ******** naval aircraft. via ******** internet Presumably, the Type 004 will have an advanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), provided it proves to be successful on the Fujian. Otherwise, this type of equipment is currently only in use with the U.S. Navy. Aside from the KJ-600, the air wing for the new carrier will likely include the J-35 stealth fighter, supported by advanced versions of the J-15 multirole fighter. The carrier is also likely to host various drones, such as navalized versions of the GJ-11 Sharp Sword uncrewed combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), plus helicopters. One of the first prototypes of the carrier-based J-35 stealth fighter. via ******** internet There have long been reports that the Type 004 will be a nuclear-powered vessel, which would give it effectively unlimited range and help meet the power-generation demands of ever-improving sensors, other mission systems, and possibly directed-energy weapons. At this stage, that remains unconfirmed but would certainly be in line with the PLAN’s expanding carrier ambitions. As well as its aircraft carriers, China is meanwhile also working to introduce a number of very large big-deck amphibious assault ships, referred to as the Type 076. Each will feature at least one electromagnetic catapult that is expected to be primarily used to launch drones, as you can read more about here. In its latest assessment of ******** military power, the Pentagon doesn’t explicitly mention the Type 004, but does state that the PLAN is “in the beginning stages of operating its multi-carrier force.” It also notes that the Fujian is just the first warship within a “nextgeneration of carriers” that will be characterized by “greater endurance and an electromagnetic catapult launch system, making them capable of launching various types of specialized fixed-wing aircraft for missions, such as airborne early warning and electronic warfare. This will increase the striking power of a potential PLAN carrier battle group when deployed to areas beyond the PRC’s immediate periphery.” While the PLAN’s carrier force is still clearly outmatched by the U.S. Navy’s fleet of 11 active nuclear-powered supercarriers, China is already benefiting from having multiple carriers to draw on, and this advantage is set to become more pronounced in the years to come. As the ******** military buildup continues, the Type 004 future aircraft carrier is clearly a program to watch. 25. Relief over Trump tariff delay eased panic in markets Relief over Trump tariff delay eased panic in markets Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., February 12, 2025. Brendan McDermid | Reuters Humans are forward-looking creatures. It allows us to plan for the future, increasing our chances of survival and success, but can also bog us down as we get mired in anxiety and inaction. There was a delicate tension between those two aspects in markets on Thursday. The monthly reading of the U.S. producer price index for January came in slightly hotter than forecast. But some components in the PPI dropped in cost, which could lead to a soft personal consumption expenditure prices index report, according to Citigroup estimates. Meanwhile, despite U.S. President Donald Trump signing an executive order for reciprocal tariffs, he held off from hitting countries with levies immediately. Eventually, optimism and relief won over fears and worries, rallying stocks. It could be a case of “tomorrow will be better” or “we’ll deal with tomorrow’s problems tomorrow.” As much as we plan for and project into the future, there are things only tomorrow will tell. What you need to know today Signing in reciprocal tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a presidential memorandum laying out his plan to impose “reciprocal tariffs” on foreign nations. Under the plan, the U.S. will treat other countries’ non-tariff policies, such as value-added taxes, as unfair trade practices that warrant tariffs in response, Trump said. The reciprocal tariffs will only take effect after the White House studies the appropriate tariff levels for each affected country. Markets look at silver liningU.S. stocks rose Thursday on the back a rally in tech stocks and relief that Trump’s reciprocal tariffs weren’t kicking in immediately. The S&P 500 climbed 1.04%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.77%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.5%. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index added 1.09%. Germany’s Dax index rose 2.09%, its biggest one-day gain in two years, thanks to Siemens shares popping more than 7% on better-than-expected first-quarter profits. High wholesale prices, but soft withinThe U.S. producer price index in January increased by 3.5% for the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday. For the month, wholesale prices rose 0.4%, higher than the Dow Jones estimate for 0.3%. Despite the higher-than-expected reading, there are signs in the report prices may be cooling. Physician care, for instance, fell 0.5%, while domestic airfares declined by 0.3% and brokerage services prices were off 2.2%. Bringing in the coinsCoinbase on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings that massively beat expectations. The crypto marketplace’s revenue jumped more than 130% to $2.3 billion from $953.8 million a year earlier. Net income came in at $1.3 billion, higher than $273 million in the same quarter the previous year. Coinbase benefited from a massive rally in bitcoin after Trump, who promised crypto-friendly policies, was elected as the 47th U.S. President. Apple and AlibabaAlibaba Group Chairman Joe Tsai confirmed on Thursday that the company was partnering Apple to roll out artificial intelligence for iPhones sold in China. ″[Apple] talked to a number of companies in China, and in the end, they chose to do business with us. They want to use our AI to power their phones,” Tsai said at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. Apple shares jumped 2% on the news, while U.S.-listed Alibaba shares climbed 1%. [PRO] Likeliest threat to marketThere are three major risks to the stock market, according to Piper Sandler. The investment firm drew that conclusion after looking at 27 instances of corrections in the S&P 500 over the past 60 years. This time, one threat, in particular, has the highest chance of causing stocks to pull back. And finally… U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a joint press conference after their summit on July 16, 2018, in Helsinki, Finland. Chris McGrath | Getty Images News | Getty Images Talks to end the war with Russia are set to begin — but Ukraine could pay a high price for peace U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he spoke to both Russia President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the phone, and that both leaders said they wanted peace. Trump said he instructed U.S. officials to begin peace talks immediately. Before Trump’s announcement, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had poured cold water on Ukraine’s hopes of joining military alliance NATO and of regaining lost territories after Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea. Ukraine is waking up to the hard reality that its biggest ally and benefactor, the U.S., could ask the country to pay a high price for peace. Beyond Kyiv, Ukraine’s allies in Europe appear to have been stunned by Trump’s unilateral move, with the continent’s top officials voicing concerns that they could be left on the sidelines of the peace talks.
