Reimer delivers as Brumbies bag rare win in Fiji
Reimer delivers as Brumbies bag rare win in Fiji
Two late tries to bullocking flanker Luke Reimer have helped the Brumbies secure a hard-fought 36-32 win over Fijian Drua in a Super Rugby Pacific thriller in Suva.
It looked like coach Stephen Larkham’s gamble of leaving key Wallabies at home wasn’t going to pay off with the Brumbies trailing until the 74th minute when Reimer rumbled over for his second.
Making their first trip to Fiji, the Brumbies became the first *********** side to win there, with the Drua’s record at home now two losses from their past 11 matches.
Larkham left Test prop James Slipper, lock Nick Frost, fullback Tom Wright and centre Len Ikitau in Canberra, while other Wallabies stars including Rob Valetini were out through injury.
The risk looked a smart move early on, with the visitors storming to a 17-7 lead, helped by two Drua yellow cards.
One of those was against Vuate Karawalevu for a deliberate knock-down, but the winger made amends in the second half, scoring twice to put his team in front.
The Brumbies scored three first-half tries, through hooker Billy Pollard, centre Ollie Sapsford and scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan, who darted down the short-side off a lineout.
But 12 handling errors to the home side’s two and Noah Lolesio missing two conversions brought their good work undone, with a converted try by centre Ponipate Loganimasi in the 37th minute giving the Drua an 18-17 halftime advantage.
The lead continued to change hands, with debutant Karawalevu’s double putting his team up 32-24 at the 60-minute mark.
Forced off early in the second half for an HIA, Reimer then used the Brumbies’ dominant set-piece to put his team back in the match.
As well as contributing four turnovers, Reimer dived across the line in the 67th minute and burrowed over again in the 74th for the visitors to go ahead 34-32.
Replacement five-eighth Declan Meredith added the extras for a four-point win.
Stand-in skipper Lonergan said he was proud of the efforts of his under-manned side to lift at the end after 13-hours travel to Suva via Melbourne.
“So proud, to be able to play six debutants and they go out there and show that kind of heart at the end to be able to claw back that deficit, it’s a credit to them,” Lonergan told Stan Sport.
“They worked so hard through the pre-season, they’ve just been grinding behind the scenes and for them to now get the chocolates here at the end, I’m so happy.
“Our set-piece there at the end, really sort of got us back there in the game and a couple of good tries to Lukey Reimer there that I’m sure we won’t stop hearing about.”

Patrick Mahomes’ Dad Missed Drug Test 2 Days After Kansas City Chiefs Lost in Super Bowl
Patrick Mahomes’ Dad Missed Drug Test 2 Days After Kansas City Chiefs Lost in Super Bowl
Patrick Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes Sr., failed to show up for a drug test, as ordered by the court, two days after the Super Bowl, In Touch can exclusively report.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Pat Sr.’s community supervision officer filed a status report on Thursday, February 13, as part of his DWI case.
The report said Pat Sr., 54, was granted permission to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, from February 7 through February 10.
The Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles went down on February 9. Pat Sr. was instructed to submit to a ****** test on February 11, but he failed to do so.
The report said he showed up the following day on February 12 to submit to a ****** test, which came back negative.
Patrick Mahomes Dad
“In addition, it was brought to this officer’s attention that [Pat Sr.] was seen on video getting into an altercation on Bourbon Street during approved travel,” the report read.
As In Touch previously reported, Pat Sr. was caught on camera getting into a verbal altercation with former MLB pitcher John Rocker during Super Bowl weekend.
Many questioned whether the argument was real or staged.
In the status report, the community supervision officer said an admin hearing was held to “admonish the defendant regarding the missed urinalysis and altercation.”
Patrick Mahomes’ Dad
Patrick was arrested for driving while intoxicated for the third time in February 2024.
Patrick Sr. was released on $100,000 bond. In August 2024, he pleaded not guilty to a felony driving while intoxicated charge.
Patrick Mahomes
The judge sentenced Pat Sr. to five-year probation, 160 hours of community service, alcohol classes and forced him to install an interlock device in his car. An interlock device requires a party to blow into the device to have their blood alcohol level tested before their car starts.
In the recent motion, the District Attorney and community supervision officer wrote, “Patrick Mahomes … due to the defendant’s extensive travel outside of Smith County for sports events it’s requested the defendant have an additional portable alcohol monitoring device when he’s not using his vehicle.” The D.A. and community supervision officer asked that Patrick be forced to wear a SCRAM alcohol monitoring bracelet.
They asked that a provision be added to his sentence reading, “At your own expense, immediately submit to the SCRAM Bracelet Alcohol Monitoring Program, and directed by your Supervision Officer and continue use of said device until released by the court, and do not attempt to remove, circumvent or tamper with the monitoring unit or any associated equipment and follow all rules and regulations of said monitoring program.
A judge has yet to rule on the matter.

Astronomers Spot a High-Speed Star That May Carry a Planet With It
Astronomers Spot a High-Speed Star That May Carry a Planet With It
A celestial object, possibly a small star with a massive exoplanet, has been observed moving through the Milky Way at an extraordinary speed of over 1.2 million mph. The discovery has led researchers to believe that this could be the fastest planetary system ever detected. The object was first identified in 2011 through microlensing, a technique where light is bent by gravitational fields. A new study has now linked this object to a recently identified star, though uncertainties remain about its exact nature and velocity.
Potential Star and Exoplanet System Analysed
According to a study published in The Astronomical Journal, the newly observed star is estimated to be around one-fifth the mass of the Sun and located approximately 24,000 light-years away in the galactic bulge. If it is the same object from the 2011 microlensing event, calculations suggest it is moving at an extreme speed. The presence of an exoplanet has not been confirmed, but based on mass estimates, researchers suggest it could be a “super-Neptune” orbiting the star at a distance comparable to Venus or Earth in the Solar System.
Possibility of Escape from the Milky Way
If the speed of the stellar object exceeds 1.3 million mph, scientists suggest it may eventually leave the Milky Way, potentially carrying its exoplanet into intergalactic space. Sean Terry, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, stated to NASA that if confirmed, it would be the first planet ever detected orbiting a hypervelocity star. However, he emphasised that further observations are necessary to verify its identity and trajectory.
Uncertainties and Alternative Theories
David Bennett, senior research scientist at the University of Maryland, told NASA that additional observations are needed to confirm whether this is the same object spotted in 2011. The research team plans to monitor the star’s movement over the next year to verify its trajectory. Another possible explanation is that the 2011 observation detected a rogue planet with an exomoon rather than a star-exoplanet system. Aparna Bhattacharya, research scientist at the University of Maryland, explained to NASA that if the object does not move as expected, the rogue planet hypothesis may be favoured.

Fan’s heart attack delays start of NRL pre-season game
Fan’s heart attack delays start of NRL pre-season game
The start of South Sydney’s pre-season match with Manly has been delayed after a medical emergency at the ground in Gosford.
AAP understands a patron at Central Coast Stadium suffered a heart attack before the game was due to kick-off at 3.30pm AEDT, requiring paramedics to leave the venue with them.
NRL rules require paramedics to be present at all matches for player safety.
The start of the game was delayed as officials rushed to make alternate arrangements that would satisfy the league’s rules.
Souths and Manly have been given the green light to start the clash at 5.10pm AEDT.
After a 30-minute delay, a call was sent out over the stadium loudspeaker asking for any intensive care paramedics to make themselves available.
The Rabbitohs have listed Englishman Lewis Dodd to play his first game for the club at No.7, while resting the majority of their other stars.
Lehi Hopoate is Manly’s biggest name set to feature, while Siua Taukeiaho has been named to play his first game back in the NRL since 2023.

Very cold weather is coming. US about to get 10th and chilliest polar vortex this winter
Very cold weather is coming. US about to get 10th and chilliest polar vortex this winter
The coldest burst of Arctic air this season is coming to put an icy exclamation point on America’s winter of repeated polar vortex invasions, meteorologists warn. And it will stay frozen there all next week.
Different weather forces in the Arctic are combining to push the chilly air that usually stays near the North Pole not just into the United States, but also Europe, several meteorologists tell The Associated Press.
This will be the 10th time this winter that the polar vortex — which keeps the coldest of Arctic air penned in at the top of the world — stretches like a rubber band to send some of that big chill south, said Judah Cohen, seasonal forecast director at the private firm Atmospheric and Environmental Research. In a normal winter, it happens maybe two or three times.

This winter, with record snow in New Orleans and drought and destructive wildfires in Southern California, has not been normal.
The latest projected cold outbreak should first hit the northern Rockies and northern Plains Saturday and then stick around all next week. The cold will likely concentrate east of the Rockies with only the far American west and central and southern Florida exempted, meteorologists said.
On Tuesday, expect the Lower 48 states to have an average low of 16.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8.6 Celsius), and then plunge to 14 degrees (minus 10 Celsius) on Wednesday, calculated private meteorologist Ryan Maue, a former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief scientist.
Sometime next week, 89% of the contiguous United States will be below the freezing mark and 27% of the Lower 48 will be below zero (minus 18 degrees Celsius), according to National Weather Service forecasts.
Meteorologists expect strong winds to make the cold feel even worse. Every U.S. state but Hawaii, California and Florida have some or all parts forecast to have a good chance of windchills of 20 degrees or below sometime next week, the National Weather Service predicted.
Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa will have “probably the most impressive” cold, with temperatures as much as 35 degrees (19 degrees Celsius) below what’s normal for this time of year, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center. NOAA weather models predict Wednesday lows below zero in Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Some storms — with flooding, heavy snow or even a nor’easter — could hit during next week’s prolonged cold outbreak, but details on those aren’t certain yet, Taylor said.
“Everything, all the stars align, all the wind directions in the atmosphere are dragging the cold polar air out of the ********* Arctic,” Maue said. “It’s the depths of winter. Everything signals extreme biting, winter cold. Obviously this isn’t the first polar vortex episode of the winter, but it looks to be the most severe.”
A stretched polar vortex like this one happens lower in the atmosphere and is different than when the polar vortex has sudden warming, weakens and all the cold air escapes south and out of the poles, Cohen said. During stretching events, the polar vortex remains in place and strong, but it also just pulls and bends. Stretch outbreaks are usually slightly milder than the big polar escape events and often hit the United States, not Europe.
Meteorologists are going to want to study why this stretching is happening so often this year, but it could just be natural randomness, said Laura Ciasto, a meteorologist at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center who specializes in the polar vortex.
“What we’re observing right now is interesting, but not unprecedented,” said Martin Stendel, a scientist at the National Center for Climate Research in Denmark.
Another factor adding to the polar vortex stretching is a big blob of high pressure in the upper atmosphere over Greenland. It’s moving west and will push the jet stream — the river of air that moves weather systems such as storms — into a pattern that causes polar air to plunge and stay there, Cohen said.
Human-caused climate change may be making the jet stream wavier and more likely to be stuck in that wavy pattern, one of the factors involved, Stendel said.
There haven’t been many winters like this in the past to help meteorologists forecast what will happen next and when the cold will finally go away, Maue said.
Despite the unusually cold winter across the U.S., the world remains in an overall warming pattern. Earth’s average overall temperature set yet another monthly heat record in January. It was the 18th month of the last 19 that the world hit or passed the internationally agreed upon warming limit of 1.5 C (2.7 F) above pre-industrial times.

How a traffic stop in Vermont cracked open a cultlike group linked to deaths in multiple states
How a traffic stop in Vermont cracked open a cultlike group linked to deaths in multiple states
In the wooded outskirts of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a perplexed landlord noticed odd sights at two of his rental properties.
Tenants wore long ****** coats and parked box trucks outside the duplexes. They ran an electrical cord from one box truck into one of the condos, and kept a stretcher inside another.
A neighbor remembers similarly dressed figures walking around at night holding hands. They never spoke a word.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
By the time the FBI searched the property last week, one of the most recent tenants had been killed in a shootout with U.S. Border Patrol agents in Vermont, and a second was under arrest. A third, a shadowy figure known online as “Ziz,” remains missing after authorities linked their cultlike group to six deaths in three states.
Officials have offered few details of the cross-country investigation, which broke open after the Jan. 20 shooting death of a Border Patrol trooper in Vermont during a traffic stop. Associated Press interviews and a review of court records and online postings tell the story of how a group of young, highly intelligent computer scientists, most of them in their 20s and 30s, met online, shared anarchist beliefs, and became increasingly violent.
Their goals aren’t clear, but online writings span topics from radical veganism and gender identity to artificial intelligence.
At the middle of it all is “Ziz,” who appears to be the leader of the strange group, who called themselves “Zizians.” She has been seen near multiple crime scenes and has connections to various suspects.
She was even declared dead for a time, before reappearing amid more violence.
Who is Ziz?
Jack LaSota moved to the San Francisco Bay area after earning a computer science degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2013 and interning at NASA, according to a profile on a hiring site for programmers, coders and other freelance workers. NASA officials did not respond to a request to confirm LaSota’s internship, but a Jack LaSota is listed on a website about past interns.
In 2016, she began publishing a dark and rambling blog under the name Ziz, describing her theory that the two hemispheres of the brain could hold separate values and genders and “often desire to kill each other.”
LaSota used she/her pronouns, and in her writings says she is a transgender woman. She railed against perceived enemies, including so-called rationalist groups, which operate mostly online and seek to understand human cognition through reason and knowledge. Some are concerned with the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.
LaSota began promoting an extreme mix of rationalism, ethical veganism, anarchism and other value systems, said Jessica Taylor, an AI researcher who met LaSota both in person and online through the rationalist community and knew her as Ziz.
When LaSota left the rationalists behind, she took with her a group of “extremely vulnerable and isolated” followers, Anna Salamon, executive director of the Center for Applied Rationality, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Taylor said Ziz adherents use the rationalist ideology as a reason to commit violence. “Stuff like, thinking it’s reasonable to avoid paying rent and defend oneself from being evicted,” she said.
Poulomi Saha, a professor who has studied cults, said LaSota’s beliefs and writings may have made readers feel seen, an often central factor in the formation of groups commonly labeled cults. That’s especially true in the era of online communities, in which it’s easier for marginalized people to seek fellow believers.
“For the person who feels hailed by that blog post, there is likely to be a kind of dual experience,” said Saha, co-director of the program in critical theory at the University of California, Berkeley. “One where they feel like ‘I have been saying this, or thinking this, all along, and no one has believed me.’”
LaSota, 34, has not responded to multiple Associated Press emails in recent weeks, and her attorney Daniel McGarrigle declined to comment when asked whether she is connected to any of the deaths. She has missed court appearances in two states, and bench warrants have been issued for her arrest. Associated Press reporters have left numerous phone and e-mail messages with LaSota’s family and received no response.
Ziz and followers’ first run-in with the law
In November 2019, LaSota was arrested along with several other people at a protest outside a Northern California retreat center where the Center for Applied Rationality was holding an event. Sheriff’s deputies called in a SWAT team and armored vehicle after the mask-wearing group blocked the property’s exits and handed out fliers railing against the rationalist organization. The group said they were protesting ******* misconduct inside the rationalist group.
The case against LaSota, Emma Borhanian, 31, Gwen Danielson and Alexander Leatham, 29, was pending in August 2022 when the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report that LaSota had fallen out of a boat in San Francisco Bay. Her body wasn’t found, but her mother confirmed the death and an obituary was published.
It wasn’t long before Ziz surfaced again.
A landlord is attacked in California
By the autumn of 2022, LaSota had moved with other group members, including Borhanian and Leatham, into vans and box trucks on property owned by Curtis Lind in Vallejo, about 30 miles north of San Francisco.
“Emma’s van was amazing,” said someone who knew Borhanian. “It had a refrigerator and freezer and microwave. It was truly a work of art.”
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears for her safety, described Borhanian as a kind and loving young woman so smart that she worked at Google while in college. Google did not respond to an inquiry about Borhanian’s employment there.
Prosecutors say she was among those who attacked Lind on Nov. 13 when he tried to evict the group for not paying rent.
Impaled by a sword and partially blinded, Lind fought back, fatally shooting Borhanian. Concluding that Lind acted in self-defense, officials charged Leatham and Suri Dao, 23, with ******* in Borhanian’s death, as well as attempted ******* of Lind.
A person reached by an Associated Press reporter at a phone number listed for Alex Leatham’s father declined to comment. Attempts to reach family members for Dao were not successful.
Police believe LaSota was at the scene of the crime, but she was not arrested.
An elderly couple is killed in Pennsylvania
On New Year’s Eve of 2022, a couple was shot and killed in their home in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania.
A doorbell camera captured audio and video of a car pulling up to the home of Richard Zajko, 71, and his wife, Rita, 69. A voice shouts “Mom!” and another voice exclaims, “Oh my God! Oh, God, God!” according to a Pennsylvania state police affidavit. Police found the couple shot in the head in an upstairs bedroom after they failed to show up to take care of Rita’s mother.
Police questioned the couple’s daughter, Michelle, at her home in Vermont, and a few weeks later, took her into custody at a Pennsylvania hotel. She wasn’t arrested or charged with anything. LaSota was at the hotel, too, and was arrested after refusing to cooperate with officers, and charged with obstructing law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
Six months later, LaSota was released on bail but stopped showing up for court.
LaSota’s attorney, Daniel McGarrigle, said last month his client was “wholly and unequivocally innocent of the charges filed in this case.”
The landlord in California is found dead
Meanwhile, the case regarding the landlord in California was headed to trial. The landlord, who was 82, was the only eyewitness, and prosecutors wanted to hurry along the proceedings.
But on Jan. 17, Lind’s throat was cut, and he died, not far from where he had survived the earlier attack.
Maximilian Snyder, 22, who is charged with *******, appeared in court Feb. 6, only long enough to request a new attorney. It’s not clear how he was identified as a suspect; he has ties to a woman who just days later would be involved in a shootout.
Snyder is listed as in custody in the Solano County Jail in California. Attempts to reach family members of Snyder were not successful.
A Border Patrol agent dies in a shootout Vermont
On. Jan 20, in Vermont, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle carrying two people connected to the Ziz group. A hotel worker had called authorities after seeing one of them, Teresa Youngblut, with a gun.
Youngblut was driving the car when it was pulled over on Jan. 20, and authorities say she quickly opened fire on officers. The passenger, Felix Bauckholt, a ******* national who is also listed in court documents as Ophelia, died, along with the border patrol agent, David Maland.
Youngblut was wounded and arrested and has pleaded not guilty to firearms charges.
Authorities who searched the car found a ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles, respirators and ammunition, the FBI said. They also found two-way radios and used shooting range targets.
Youngblut applied for a marriage license with Snyder, the man accused of murdering the elderly landlord. He was a childhood friend; it was unclear if they were married. Authorities say the gun she was carrying was purchased by a person of interest in the Zajko killings.
The last sighting of Ziz
Youngblut and Bauckholt had been living at the two condos in North Carolina, where the landlord and neighbors now say they saw the odd behavior.
LaSota also had been living there as recently as this winter, said the landlord, who reviewed LaSota’s 2019 police booking photo. He spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was concerned for his safety.
Expressing similar concerns, a neighbor who lived in the other side of Bauckholt’s duplex until September 2023 recalled seeing three people wearing long ****** robes and tactical clothes.
“They rarely came out during the day but would walk around the neighborhood and in the woods at night,” the former neighbor said, who also spoke only on condition of anonymity because of concerns for their safety. “Sometimes all three of them would go for a walk and they all held hands. They seemed to care for each other a great deal.”

Target submits plans to build new Middle Tennessee store. Where will it go?
Target has submitted plans to build a new store in Lebanon, according to city officials.
The site plan, which still needs government approval, proposes a build location for the big box retailer along South Hartmann Drive and just north of Interstate 40, according to the city.
“It will add sales tax, eventually it will add property tax and more shopping opportunities (in) Lebanon for sure,” Lebanon City Councilor Chris Crowell said.
Target has a store operating roughly 12 miles west in Mt. Juliet at Providence Marketplace.
“It’s bringing more of that commercial vitality to the Hartmann corridor, that was the purpose,” Councilor Camille Burdine said.
A future Sam’s Club has also been approved in Lebanon just off South Hartmann and north of I-40.
Road work to extend Willard Drive and Hagan Way to support the future Sam’s Club and other business is underway.

Columbus City School teacher killed in Hilliard I-270 ******
HILLIARD, Ohio (WCMH) – A Columbus City School teacher lost his life after a two-vehicle ****** in Hilliard early Friday morning.
Officers from the Hilliard Division of Police responded to a car ****** at around 1:47 a.m. on Interstate 270 South, between the Hayden Run Road and Davidson Road overpasses. Police said that’s where a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze struck a 2015 Honda CRV, causing the SUV to strike a wall and flip over.
The sedan reportedly veered off the road, struck a tree and came to a rest. The driver of the SUV was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the sedan, identified by Columbus City Schools and confirmed by Hilliard police, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a spokesperson for Columbus City Schools, 32-year-old Jared Jackson was a physical education teacher at Winterset and Lincoln Park Elementary schools.
“This is a tragic loss felt across the district,” CCS Communication Director Tyler Carter said in a statement. “Jackson was a dedicated champion for youth, and his life was a testament to the power of service and leadership. His passing leaves a void in the CCS community and beyond, but his legacy of shaping young lives will continue to inspire us, reminding us of the positive impact one person can have.”
I-270 South was closed for nearly six hours between State Route 33 and the Cemetery Road exit, before reopening at around 7:25 a.m. Friday.

*** army ‘so run down’ it could not lead Ukraine peace force, says former chief
*** army ‘so run down’ it could not lead Ukraine peace force, says former chief
MOD
The *** military is “so run down” it could not lead a future peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, the former head of the army has said.
Lord Dannatt told the BBC that up to 40,000 *** troops would be needed for such a mission and “we just haven’t got that number available”.
It comes after Sir Keir Starmer said the *** would “play its part” in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security after the prime minister was asked this week if he was open to sending British troops as peacekeepers.
A former Nato chief told the BBC that Britain and France should lead a force of up to 100,000 troops as part of a long-term peacekeeping effort should Russia’s war with Ukraine end.
US President Donald Trump earlier this week announced he had had a lengthy conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and that negotiations to stop the “ridiculous war” in Ukraine would begin “immediately”.
Trump then “informed” Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, of his plan.
Lord Dannatt – who was head of the Army from 2006 to 2009 – agreed that a force to keep the peace would require about 100,000 troops.
However he said the *** would have to supply “quite a proportion of that and we really couldn’t do it”.
“Our military is so run down at the present moment, numerically and as far as capability and equipment is concerned, it would potentially be quite embarrassing,” he told BBC Radio 4’s The Week in Westminster.
“I mean, if we were to deploy 10,000 troops, each rotation for six months, that would effectively tie up 30,000 or 40,000 troops and we just haven’t got that number available.
“So there are some big issues here that today’s politicians won’t really have considered.”
It comes as Britain’s foreign and defence secretaries called on the *** and Europe to “do more” to “share the burden” of regional security in a joint article for the Daily Telegraph on Saturday.
PA Media
Lord Dannatt warned the *** could not supply the troops needed for peacekeeping in Ukraine
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who was Nato secretary-general from 2009 to 2014, said “a number of European countries need to step up to the plate” for any peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, adding that the *** and France should lead that coalition by putting boots on the ground.
“I would let military experts determine [the number] but my guess would be between 50,000 and 100,000 troops,” he told BBC Newsnight.
As of October 2024, there were 74,612 members of the ***’s regular Army forces (excluding Gurkhas and volunteers), according to the latest Ministry of Defence (MoD) figures.
The Army has targets on how many new recruits below the rank of officer it should take on every year, set out by the MoD. These targets have been missed in almost every single financial year since 2010-11, according to a written answer to Parliament last January.
Lord Dannatt said the Labour government would need to “look at their priorities”, adding: “Yes, health, education, roads, infrastructure are important, but actually defence and the security of this nation are more important.”
The crossbench peer said he believes the *** government needs to go further than its commitment of increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP – a pledge that they have yet to put a timeline on when it will be delivered.
Zelensky has previously asked for the *** and other European allies including France to send troops to Ukraine for a peacekeeping operation after the war.
Sir Keir last month signed a “landmark” 100-year pact with Ukraine, building on the £12.8bn the *** hass already sent to the country, with further commitments of £3bn every year for “as long as it takes”.
The *** will also continue to train Ukrainian troops, 50,000 of whom have been trained on British soil so far.
David Lammy, the British foreign secretary, said he was “very encouraged” by his talks on Ukraine with US Vice-President JD Vance on Friday, on the first day of the Munich Security Conference.
“We share the view that there has to be an enduring peace,” Lammy told Reuters news agency following the meeting.
“There was an agreement that Zelensky and the Ukrainians have to be part of that negotiated deal.”
However, Lammy and his defence colleague John Healey said that Putin had for two decades sought “to recreate the Russian empire and suffocate the countries around its borders”.
“Too often in the past, the West has let him,” they said in the Daily Telegraph.
“We did too little in 2008 when he invaded Georgia, and in 2014 when he first went into Ukraine.”
In response to Lord Dannatt’s comments, an MoD spokesperson said Britain’s armed forces were “respected worldwide for their professionalism and excellence”.
“Right now, the Ukrainians are still fighting with huge courage. Our government is stepping up support for Ukraine’s war fighters to put them in the best possible position for any talks.
The spokesperson cited a £150m “firepower package” announced this week “providing more drones, tanks and air defence systems”.

Marvel Rivals is Also Dealing With a Cheating Infestation But Unlike Ricochet, NetEase’s Anti-Cheat Works
Marvel Rivals is Also Dealing With a Cheating Infestation But Unlike Ricochet, NetEase’s Anti-Cheat Works
Cheaters are one of the biggest concerns in any live-service game, which is why developers need to invest a lot of time and resources into building a good anti-cheat mechanism that prevents these cheaters from ruining the experience of playing the game for everyone.

Though not all developers seem to have mastered the art of making good anti-cheats, Ricochet, which is Call of Duty’s anti-cheat, does a terrible job of catching cheaters, unlike Riot’s Vanguard and NetEase’s anti-cheat.

Marvel Rivals is a competitive hero shooter featuring superheroes from all across the Marvel universe. The game has steadily risen to fame in a couple of months following its release.
However, with the increase in popularity, there comes a risk of dealing with cheaters as well, and NetEase has established a great anti-cheat that is quite efficient at catching these players and banning their accounts for good.
The cheater’s market is still not as prevalent in Marvel Rivals as in some of the other competitive games since the game is relatively new, and the cheaters might still just be testing out ways to beat the game’s anti-cheat.

This might just be the calm before the storm, and we might see a wave of cheaters in the game soon. NetEase needs to ramp up its security as the game establishes a more firm stronghold in the market, as it would be crucial for the developer to keep the game balanced. The game also has many other inconsistencies that NetEase needs to fix
NetEase has a long road ahead of itself

This is just the beginning, and there is a high probability that these cheaters will figure out better and more efficient ways to attack the game in the coming months. However, these players can easily be tackled since they have been in the past in many other games, including Valorant.
Riot’s Vanguard is by far one of the most efficient anti-cheats on the market at the moment and does a great job of catching cheaters instantly. Vanguard’s contribution has been crucial to the game’s success.
Similarly, NetEase also needs to maintain its streak of catching cheaters efficiently. Marvel Rivals appears to be walking towards a bright future ahead of itself, and the developer wants things to stay this way; it needs to put its time and resources into making the game more secure by always staying one step ahead of the cheaters. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below.

Military Jet’s Impact in San Diego Bay Caught in Shocking Footage
Military Jet’s Impact in San Diego Bay Caught in Shocking Footage
The terrifying moment of impact when a U.S. military fighter jet nosedived and crashed into the San Diego Harbor was caught in newly-surfaced video. And given the severity of the ******, it’s incredible that neither of the two pilots nor any bystanders were hurt.
The two-seat EA-18G Growler electronic warfare jet went down at 10:17 a.m. on Wednesday morning off the shore near Shelter Island; a neighborhood which sits across the bay from Naval Air Station North Island. In the footage, the aircraft could be seen hurtling towards the water before making a 45-degree impact in just seconds, sending a giant splash of water and plume of smoke into the air.
“The plane hit the water, and there was an explosion. A lot of ****** plumes, and then it just like got sucked into the water. And within 15 seconds, there was nothing,” one witness told CBS 8 San Diego, adding that she didn’t wish it on anybody to witness such a scary moment.
Another angle of the ****** that surfaced in surveillance footage Wednesday afternoon showed the jet going down over some nearby structures.
Both pilots ejected just moments before the ******, and Navy officials confirmed that they had been rescued by a nearby finishing boat within a minute of landing in the water. They were subsequently transferred to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air Marine Operations vessel and taken to U.C. San Diego Medical Center in stable condition for further evaluation.
The captain of the fishing boat, Brandon Viets with Premier Sport Fishing, told Fox 5 San Diego that the jet crashed within a quarter mile of where they recused the pilots, and that it just narrowly avoided hitting their fishing boat with 12 passengers on board, as well as nearby homes and businesses on the coastline.
“I was thinking that’s a funny maneuver they’re doing because from time to time they do fly and it just sounded weird, and then once we saw two parachutes with dots underneath, we decided to turn the boat and head right to them and help them out,” Viets recalled. “The pilots seemed to be okay and coherent when we brought them on board and then they got taken off and given first aid.”
Another fisherman aboard the boat, Colin Casper, said that the pilots seemed shaken up, but they were aware of their surrounding and what had happened. “I looked over and saw the jet flying without pilots, without the cockpit on it,” he added.

Marvel Rivals’ Streamer Challenge Backfires Spectacularly, Fueling Mass Stream Sniping
Marvel Rivals’ Streamer Challenge Backfires Spectacularly, Fueling Mass Stream Sniping
The formula of a successful live service game is getting player engagement. But sometimes, even the best intentions can lead to unintended chaos. It’s hard to consider that NetEase Games had our best intentions in mind when they designed the recent Valentine’s Day streamer event of Marvel Rivals.
There is no love for the Valentine’s event that just happened. | Image Credit: NetEase Games
Designed to reward players who managed to match with select streamers in Quickplay, the event quickly turned into a spree of thousands of players trying to stream snipe the streamers involved. This led to a lot of issues as players threw games, abandoned them entirely, and ruined the experience for every other player in the lobby.
Marvel Rivals‘ Valentine’s Day Event was a massive red flag
And we don’t want to see another one like it again. | Image Credit: NetEase Games
On paper, the Fantastic Love Streamer Giveaway Event seemed harmless. Between February 12 and 14, NetEase partnered with several streamers across different servers, giving players the chance to win the Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman 60th Wedding Anniversary Bundle just by being in the same match as them.
As you’d expect though, this led to the majority of players at the time throwing and abandoning games to try and ****** into the streamers’ next matches. Rather than focusing on objectives, players deliberately lost games, left lobbies, or sabotaged their own teams just to try and get into the same games as these streamers.
The backlash was immediate and severe. Many players are annoyed about how this event prioritized engagement over game quality. Some argued that the event should have been structured differently, locking the skins behind challenges or Twitch drops instead. For all the good decisions that NetEase has made so far in the game’s life, this was a bad one. We sincerely hope the devs learn from this.
Comment byu/ZtrikeR21 from discussion inmarvelrivals
Funnily enough though, this isn’t the first time Marvel Rivals has attempted a streamer-based event. So for a lot of players, history is repeating itself. There was a similar event when the game was first released and we had the same kind of complaints back then too. This Redditor summed it up perfectly by saying, “This is a major blunder and I really can’t wrap my head around why they’ve done this ***** not once, but TWICE now.“
Achievement farming was the only good thing that came of it
Let’s hope NetEase learned from this mistake. | Image Credit: NetEase Games
Even in the chaos though, one Reddit user actually took the opportunity to get some profit. u/Yevon talked about how they used the time to enjoy the creative ways in which people would throw games while they themselves used the time to farm achievements. u/Sandi_Griffin also shared that they completed so many achievements that they almost have enough units to buy the skins from the store itself.
Marvel Rivals has built its reputation on listening to its community and making quick changes based on feedback. The developers have already reversed controversial decisions in the past, such as the mid-season ranked reset. NetEase has proved that they are willing to course-correct when needed. This is one of those times. Especially given the fact that it’s the second time this has happened.
The game has been a landslide success. It made an estimated $136 million in its first month and there have been no controversies or problems yet. We sure hope it stays that way and that NetEase doesn’t try to prioritize revenue over player satisfaction in the future.
