Violent Pole’s deportation blocked because he is ‘father figure’ to nephew
Violent Pole’s deportation blocked because he is ‘father figure’ to nephew
A violent Polish serial criminal’s deportation was blocked under human rights laws after he claimed to be a “father figure” to his nephew.
An immigration tribunal judge ruled that Konrad Makocki, who has nine convictions, had a close enough relationship with his nephew for his deportation to be a breach of his right to a family life under article eight of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Nawraz Karbani, the judge in the matter, said his teenage nephew would suffer a “disproportionate” impact if he was deported even though Macocki had “struggled with alcoholism”, been convicted of violence and was subject to a domestic abuse restraining order to prevent him approaching his ex-partner.
The Home Office has appealed the “perverse” decision, which has resulted in an upper tribunal judge setting it aside and asking for it to be reheard.
The case, disclosed in court papers, is the latest example exposed by The Telegraph where migrants or convicted foreign criminals have used human rights laws to remain in the *** or halt their deportations.
They include an Albanian criminal who avoided deportation after claiming his son had an aversion to foreign chicken nuggets, and a Pakistani paedophile jailed for child sex offences but who escaped removal from the *** as it would be “unduly harsh” on his own children.
Last week issues raised by the cases dominated Prime Minister’s Questions. Sir Keir Starmer described as “wrong” a tribunal decision to allow a ************ family to live in the *** after they applied through a scheme for Ukrainian refugees.
He said Parliament, not judges, should make the rules on immigration and pledged that Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, would work on closing the loophole.
Issues raised by the immigration cases dominated Prime Minister’s Questions last week
There are a record 34,169 outstanding immigration appeals, largely on human rights grounds, which threaten to hamper Labour’s efforts to fast-track the removal of thousands of ******** migrants and head off the threat from Reform ***.
‘Immigration judges out of control’
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, claimed the latest case of the Polish migrant showed immigration judges were “out of control” and stretched the definition of family life under the ECHR “ever further”.
“As a result, every day the British public are being exposed to the risk of his mindless violence,” he said.
“This immigration judge seems to care more about this violent criminal’s rights than about protecting the public here by sending him back to Poland. With each one of these shocking cases unearthed by The Telegraph, the case for radical changes to human rights law gets stronger.”
Makocki came to Britain in 2009 and has been convicted on six occasions of nine offences including assault, battery, cannabis possession, racial or religious harassment and threatening behaviour. He was jailed in 2021 for 10 months, with a two-year restraining order to prevent him from approaching his ex-partner.
The Home Office ordered his deportation shortly after he sought EU settlement in the ***. Although he had not undergone any formal rehabilitation, Makocki told the court he was “now sober and intends to stay that way”, expressed remorse and had pleaded guilty to all offences.
Judge Karbani backed his claim that deportation would be “unduly harsh” on his nephew, the threshold for an ECHR breach: “I am satisfied he offers practical assistance to his sister and nephew in a relationship akin to being a father figure, and this will not be able to continue at any comparable level if [Makocki] is deported.”
Upper tribunal judge challenges verdict
However, the verdict was challenged by Matthew Hoffman, an upper tribunal judge, who said there was “no suggestion” Makocki lived with his nephew before he was jailed or to what extent he played a part in his life.
Judge Hoffman also said he could not “discern what particular facts of the case” supported the claim that the nephew would suffer “severe or bleak” consequences from Makocki’s deportation.
“Irrespective of the fact that [Makocki] is not even the parent of the child in question, I am satisfied that the judge failed to identify any consequences that would befall the nephew that would engage the necessary degree of harshness,” he said.
Ordering the case to be reconsidered, Judge Hoffman expressed concern that it had taken two and a half years before he heard the Home Office appeal, which meant Makocki could have found a new partner, strengthening his claim to stay in the *** under article eight rights to a family life.

Captain America: Brave New World Review
Captain America: Brave New World Review
Has Marvel been on top for too long? It certainly feels like it.
Marvel’s latest addition to the pantheon, Captain America: Brave New World, surely had a lot resting on its shoulders. Not only does Brave New World strive to uphold Steve Rogers’ legacy and cement Sam Wilson as the new Captain America, it also follows on from the acclaimed Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, and ties up loose ends from two of Marvel’s biggest blunders to date in The Eternals and The Incredible Hulk.
The 35th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe had plenty of potential to take the ailing franchise into new directions, with Falcon and the Winter Soldier teasing a Captain America that would more actively engage in fighting social injustice, striving for a… Brave New World, yet the film itself falls back on the same old tired Marvel formula, afraid to make much-needed waves and risk disrupting Marvel’s position at the top.
But the same old Marvel formula just doesn’t cut it any more, even for a big Marvel fan like me. Brave New World attempts to recapture the fading magic, intentionally drawing many parallels between itself and fan favorite Captain America: The Winter Soldier; political intrigue driving the plot and Captain America teaming up with a Falcon to name just two, but the newer entry is a pale imitation, unwilling to fully commit anything as it juggles its multiple commitments.
True to recent form, so much going on means that little in the film is given the proper attention it deserves. The film’s villain, Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, returns following the longest gap between Marvel appearances, having last appeared in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, the first entry in the MCU. The role here is reminiscent of Baron Zemo’s role in Civil War, but where Zemo’s plan sought to tear down the Avengers, The Leader’s plan is more focused on Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Daniel Brühl’s Zemo enthralled viewers with a grounded and mysterious portrayal while Nelson’s Leader’s goofy look and cartoonish scheming in the shadows just feels a little bland.
In contrast, Ford’s portrayal of Ross was surprisingly strong. With so much news coverage leading up to the movie’s release centered on Ford’s somewhat nonchalant attitude to the movie, its reception, and Ford’s own on-set reputation. I went in expecting his performance to be phoned in — after all he had made it clear he only took on the role for the large amount of money Marvel had offered him — and was pleasantly surprised to find that Ford’s performance as Ross was easily my favorite. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ford is quite the natural at “grumpy old man.”
Anthony Mackie’s performance as Captain America was also strong. Although a vocal few have raised their — in my opinion unwarranted — concerns about Mackie’s ability to do the role justice Mackie delivered as he had done in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, consistently bringing the charm to the role present since his first appearance as The Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In many respects however, Mackie’s Captain America has been let down by Marvel and the team behind Brave New World. The writing did at times fail to find the right balance in attempting to bring to the table the political issues supposedly close to the heart of this version of Captain America, always landing disappointingly neutral as Marvel and the movie’s writers continuously raise these ideas and stances, only to falter in willingness to come down decisively on one side or the other beyond bland platitudes.
Harrison Ford is the newest member of the Hulk family.
Worse still, even the action fails to boost the dull writing. The action itself is a mixed but boring bag, where scenes are either doing nothing new, are dark and quickly cut messes, or bright and saturated CGI affairs. The biggest of the CGI fights is the big one heavily teased in the trailers and posters, the fight against the Red Hulk. I won’t go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil too much, but even this fails to entertain, boiling down to what is essentially CGI destruction porn, unable to escape the obvious and extreme mismatch in power between the two combatants, forcing it into an underwhelming and expected end.
The fight highlighted a common Marvel issue for me: sterile visuals. Whether it stems from an over-reliance on CGI, the need to stick to the Marvel style, or an inexperienced production team — Brave New World is director Julius Onah’s fourth film and two of the movie’s three main writers come from a mostly TV background — everything in Brave New World felt just a little too clean, a little too clear, and a little too bright and colorful. The overuse of CGI and overly saturated colors actually had the unwanted effect of resembling AI imagery – it all just looked a little fake.
Strong performances by the movie’s two big draws unfortunately aren’t enough to rescue Brave New World from its own mediocrity. Marvel had the opportunity to do something new here but chose to rest on its laurels and produce another paint-by-numbers entry in the increasingly out of touch and lazy MCU, leaving us with a Captain America that could have been great but is instead slow, predictable and boring.
Marvel’s reluctance to change up its formula while there is still a semblance of goodwill banked with general audiences is starting to bite it in the rear. While for now Marvel still holds its position as the top dog when it comes to superhero franchises, Brave New World is the big wobble that may just leave Marvel’s crown vulnerable and within reach as DC’s fresh start comes nipping at its heels.

‘We are flooded in s—‘
‘We are flooded in s—‘
Veteran strategist James Carville argued during a podcast episode that Democrats are “overwhelmed” and that he has not figured out a way the party can combat the flurry of news President Trump has made since returning to the White House.
“Bannon is right. We are flooded in s— and we are searching for a way to deal with this. These are extraordinarily difficult times,” Carville said Thursday on the “Politics War Room” podcast which he co-hosts with Al Hunt.
Carville was referencing former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s quote from 2018 when he said “the way to deal with [the media] is to flood the zone with s—.”
The long-time Democratic operative, who steered former President Clinton’s campaign, said that Democrats are “getting overwhelmed and that “things that we thought that would kill a political career, would be poisonous for whatever reason, this guy [Trump] keeps chugging along.”
Since Trump’s second White House term started on Jan. 20, Democrats have failed to coalesce around a unified message to effectively oppose the president, who has moved to reshape the government. Democrats have grown frustrated over his recent decisions, including directives to shut down agencies and entire departments. Some within the party, particularly in the progressive wing, have argued that a harder stance needs to be taken.
“While Elon Musk is pouring gasoline and dropping lit matches across the federal government, voters don’t want their elected representatives acting like deer in the ***********,” Karthik Ganapathy, a progressive political operative who worked for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), told The Hill.
Carville said during the podcast that he is unsure how to counter Trump.
“And I don’t know how you accentuate. Do you oppose one thing? Do you oppose all five? Is it a personnel issue? Is it a policy issue? I’m struggling here a little bit, so maybe some of our really smart viewers can help us untangle it a little bit,” he said. “It’s really tangled now because no one knows where to land. It’s all too incomprehensible.”

Newegg reintroduces scalper-beating ‘Shuffle’ lottery for premium-priced RTX 5080s
Newegg reintroduces scalper-beating ‘Shuffle’ lottery for premium-priced RTX 5080s
Nvidia is seriously undersupplying the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs, leading to a shortage that the company has finally acknowledged. Because of this, retailers and manufacturers are finding ways to ensure that everyone has a fair chance of getting a GPU directly from them and avoid scalpers who use bots to buy these graphics cards en masse and then sell them online for over twice or thrice the selling price. Because of this, Newegg posted on X that it’s reinstating its Shuffle program, which it first introduced in 2020 during the launch of the RTX 30-series GPUs during the pandemic.
The last Shuffle occurred at 10 a.m. PT on February 15, and Newegg raffled off three RTX 5080s for purchase. The retailer offered the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming OC 16G, Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5080 16GB OC Edition, and ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 16GB OC Edition at premium prices. Gigabyte’s model has gone from $1,199.99 to $1,399.99, whereas the Asus TUF Gaming and ROG Astral have increased from $1,349.99 to $1,484.99 and $1,499.99 to $1,649.99, respectively. Newegg has previously blamed the U.S. tariffs for the price hikes.
Unfortunately, the retailer said it doesn’t know when the next Shuffle will run, as each event depends on the arrival of GPU stocks in its warehouses. Nevertheless, you can receive notifications when it launches by signing up for notifications under your account or downloading the Newegg app to your phone. Alternatively, you can follow the company on X and other social media platforms, as it posts events like these there.
If you join the Shuffle program and are selected to purchase the GPU, it will automatically be added to your cart. You must then complete the transaction within the given window. Do not move the item to the Wish List or Save For Later, as you will lose your allocation (although you can get it back by clicking the link in the “You have been selected” notification).
Moves like this show how retailers work hard to ensure end-users get their hands on these GPUs. That way, they can thwart scalpers who use bots and other tools to gain an unfair advantage and then sell these in-demand items at way more than MSRP. While this is an admirable move, the onus to improve the situation is still on Nvidia, as it’s seemingly the bottleneck. After all, borders are now open, and we no longer have a graphics card supply chain problem brought on by lockdowns, unlike during the global COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022.

Bo has dream day with record 21st world biathlon gold
Bo has dream day with record 21st world biathlon gold
Norwegian biathlon great Johannes Thingnes Bo has made history at the world championships in Lenzerheide by winning a record 21st title.
Bo’s triumph on Swiss soil on Saturday meant that he now has one more gold medal than compatriot and fellow biathlon legend Ole Einar Bjorndalen. He boasts a total of 39 medals in all at world championships.
“It feels amazing. What a fantastic day, one of my best sprints ever. Getting the 21st victory in the world championships to make history in my last games here is unbelievably good,” Bo said.
The event in Lenzerheide is set to be Bo’s last world championships as he has already announced that he will retire at the end of the season.
While the 31-year-old can extend his gold-medal streak in Lenzerheide, he won’t be able to match Bjorndalen’s tally of 45 medals overall.
“He’s a legend. If he kept going, he would break all of my records,” Bjorndalen told broadcaster ZDF.
Bo took the lead just before the prone stage and went unchallenged from that point.
He finished the 10km sprint in 21 minutes 56.8 seconds, 27.7 seconds ahead of American Campbell Wright, who claimed his maiden podium at a world championships.
“I don’t think I could have had a more perfect competition. I think the team made perfect preparations. We had a good team spirit,” Bo said.

Uber accuses DoorDash of anticompetitive practices in lawsuit
Uber accuses DoorDash of anticompetitive practices in lawsuit
By Gnaneshwar Rajan
(Reuters) – Uber Technologies has filed a lawsuit against DoorDash, accusing the online delivery firm of anticompetitive practices, leading to higher costs for both restaurants and customers.
In a filing in California Superior Court in San Francisco on Friday, Uber accused DoorDash of coercing restaurants into using DoorDash as their exclusive or sole preferred provider for delivery.
“DoorDash’s underhanded tactics have cost Uber millions of dollars in revenue and unlawfully restricted its ability to grow Uber Direct, the Uber Eats platform for first-party delivery,” Uber said in the lawsuit, first reported by the Wall Street Journal late Friday.
“Uber’s case has no merit. Their claims are unfounded and based on their inability to offer merchants, consumers, or couriers a quality alternative,” a DoorDash spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
Uber did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for comment.

Anyone in the US can now buy Nintendo’s Alarmo clock from the online store
Anyone in the US can now buy Nintendo’s Alarmo clock from the online store
Nintendo of America announced that it’s opened purchases of the game-themed alarm clock, Alarmo, to the public so anyone can snag one, with or without a Switch Online membership. The bright red alarm clock comes with a handful of built-in themes to choose from at the start — Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4 and Ring Fit Adventure — and Nintendo says others, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, will be available for free down the line. Alarmo will also be sold as well as online in other regions.
Alarmo first went on ***** back in October, but only for Nintendo Switch Online members. That changed on Friday, when the company announced, “Nintendo Sound Clock: #Alarmo is now available on My Nintendo store, no Nintendo Switch Online membership required.”
To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so.
Alarmo can wake you up and put you to sleep with sounds and animations from your chosen title, and it has a motion sensor for sleep tracking (though found the latter to be pretty useless). There’s an undeniable charm to it all; the characters will even celebrate when you finally drag yourself out of bed. The downside is that it costs $100. Still, I can’t say the idea of having greet me first thing every morning isn’t extremely tempting.

Pop Star Gracie Abrams Condemns ‘Really Dangerous’ ************: It’s ‘Not Real’
Pop Star Gracie Abrams Condemns ‘Really Dangerous’ ************: It’s ‘Not Real’
Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams, the daughter of famed filmmaker J.J. Abrams, recently revealed she believes ************ is “really dangerous.”
During an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, the 25-year-old recording artist said ************ “is dangerous, not real, and a performance,” noting it is particularly hazardous for young people whose first exposure to sex is explicit material.
Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start”
Abrams recalled reading a ********* suggestive article in Cosmo that sparked her curiosity, leading her to turn to the internet for answers, which, upon reflection, she said, “is frightening.”
“Young people need to learn about sex from a reputable resource, like Cosmo or a strong mentor, not just scrolling aimlessly online like I did,” she said.
Of course, it should be noted, Cosmo’s worldly content is hardly wholesome and is certainly not compatible with Christian values. For example, as CBN News reported in 2023, the popular magazine sparked fury for its promotion of satanic abortion rituals with an article commending The Satanic Temple as a “pioneer” in expanding access to abortion.
Additionally, the magazine has published articles promoting promiscuity as well as ******* relationships contrary to the biblical model of lifelong marriages between one man and one woman.
Nevertheless, Abrams’ comments about the dangers of ************ are poignant — and she isn’t alone.
Fellow pop star Billie Eilish described ************ as “a disgrace” during an interview in 2021 with shock jock Howard Stern, admitting she used to watch “a lot” of ************.
“I think it really destroyed my brain and I feel incredibly devastated that I was exposed to so much porn,” she told Stern, who has built a career on the objectification of women. “I think that I had sleep paralysis, and these almost, like, night terrors — just nightmares. I think that’s how they started, because I would just watch abusive [************], and that’s what I thought was attractive, and it got to a point where I couldn’t watch anything unless it was violent, and I didn’t think it was attractive.”
She went on to say she is “so angry” ************ is “so loved” by society.
The prevalence of explicit ******* material is undeniable. A study from 2020, for example, found 91.5% of men and 60.2% of women reported consuming ************ within the past month.
“I’m so angry at myself for thinking that it was OK,” said Eilish.

Agassi, son of tennis greats, set for baseball stardom
Agassi, son of tennis greats, set for baseball stardom
Jaden Agassi, the son of a pair of International Tennis Hall of Famers, will pitch for Team Germany at the World Baseball Classic qualifiers next month in Tucson, Arizona.
Parents Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf introduced their son to baseball as a child, and Jaden chose that sport over the family business.
“Agassi is a very tennis last name, of course,” Jaden told WKBN News in Youngstown, Ohio. “The goal is to try to make it a baseball one.”
His father won 60 career titles, including eight grand slams, while his mother won 107 titles, including 22 slams. They also both won gold medals at the Olympics.
“I started playing baseball when I was six years old in T-ball,” Agassi, 23, told MLB.com in a phone interview.
“I loved it. I’ve picked up a tennis racquet a good amount, but it was always hard for me to keep that ball in between the lines. I just wanted to hit that thing as far as I could. Baseball had my love since day one.”
Graf was born and raised in Germany, making him eligible to play in the WBC qualifier for his mum’s homeland.
The younger Agassi played his developmental baseball in Las Vegas before pitching in college at Southern California.
Germany, Brazil, Colombia and China will compete in Tucson for a spot in the 2026 WBC, with the top two teams qualifying.

Woman, 62, found out her husband drained nest egg and took on $126K debt. Rachel Cruze offers ‘rare’ solution
Woman, 62, found out her husband drained nest egg and took on $126K debt. Rachel Cruze offers ‘rare’ solution
This 62-year-old Tennessee woman was shocked to find out her husband drained their retirement nest egg behind her back — and left them $126K in debt. Here’s Rachel Cruze’s ‘rare’ solution
Beth from Nashville, Tennessee thought she was all set for retirement soon. But her sense of financial security was shattered when her husband informed her that their retirement savings were depleted and the family had $126,000 in consumer debt looming over them.
“He’s had three huge job losses, they were all well-paying jobs,” she explained to Rachel Cruze and ***** Warshaw on a recent episode of “The Ramsey Show.” “He did invest in a 401(k). I’ve never been sure about how much was in there, I think it might have been maybe $170,000. It’s gone!”
Beth let her husband be solely responsible for their finances all these years and admitted that she was afraid of probing him about their financial situation because “he would get terribly angry.”
Her unfortunate circumstance is a brutal portrayal of how damaging financial infidelity can be.
Despite being married for over 30 years, Beth says she was left in the dark about the family’s finances. Her husband, she says, experienced extended periods of unemployment because he refused to get any job below upper-management level. He recently revealed that he had been spending money from their retirement accounts during these stretches.
He also managed to accumulate $126,000 in debt, including $77,000 in credit cards and $50,000 in a HELOC co-signed with his sister. “Now that’s all gone too,” Beth sighed. “Honestly, he was not a very good money manager.”
Mismanaging money and concealing financial details from partners is unfortunately common. A whopping 40% of U.S. adults in committed relationships have committed financial infidelity, according to a recent survey by Bankrate. Forty-five percent say this form of deception is as bad as, if not worse than, physical infidelity.
Beth’s husband hasn’t just damaged their relationship through his deception, he’s also left them both vulnerable as they approach retirement. One in five American seniors ages 50+ have no retirement savings, according to a 2024 survey by AARP. Over a quarter (26%) of people who are not yet retired say they expect to never retire.
Without a safety net, many seniors have been compelled to delay retirement or cancel it altogether. Beth says she is now working part-time and has convinced her husband to take a job as a car salesman.
Story Continues
However, Cruze says she needs to do more to protect her financial future.
After decades of lies and deception, Cruze believes it’s necessary for Beth to create a financial firewall and manage her own finances independently. “I would have my own money,” she tells her. “Get your own checking account. We rarely say this, we’re the show that’s the opposite, but in a situation like this …”
Twenty-seven percent of U.S. adults in committed relationships have completely separate finances, according to the Bankrate survey. Separate accounts can give couples a sense of autonomy and privacy, but in Beth’s case it could also offer protection. With a separate checking and investment account, she could accumulate modest savings for her eventual retirement.
Meanwhile, an open conversation with her husband could help them create a plan to curb their combined debt burden and secure their financial future together.

‘I Can’t Lie’: Christian Teacher Celebrates Victory After Battling School’s Parental Rights Policy
‘I Can’t Lie’: Christian Teacher Celebrates Victory After Battling School’s Parental Rights Policy
A Virginia teacher is celebrating victory after fighting back over the claim she was “asked to lie to parents about their own children.”
Deb Figliola, a middle school teacher, told CBN News she felt compelled to take a stand after the Harrisonburg City Public School Board reportedly created a new policy she believes upended parents’ rights.
Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start”
“A little over three years ago, we were given a training that told us as a staff — and this training was given to all staff and all personnel within the school district — that we would have to ask students for what they wanted to be called and what pronoun they preferred,” she said. “And then we had to always refer to them that way.”
Beyond that, Figliola said teachers were told not to tell parents about the use of these pronouns. She said she took issue with the policy and the district, where she has been teaching for more than a decade.
“When I heard that training, I basically went back to my office, my classroom, and wrote … down some thoughts,” she said. “I still have the paper and I just wrote, ‘I can’t lie. I’m not going to lie to kids and I’m not going to lie to parents.’”
According to Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a Christian legal advocacy group, the school district decided before the 2021-2022 school year to add “gender identity” to its nondiscrimination policy.
“It then developed and issued guidance that detailed new requirements related to students and parents that teachers were told to ‘immediately implement,’” ADF noted in a statement. “These new requirements included the directive that HCPS staff must ask for and use any name or pronoun a student requests, even if inconsistent with the student’s sex. It also required staff to hide such requests from parents unless HCPS employees determined the child’s parents were sufficiently ‘supportive’ of their child’s ‘transition.’”
Figliola teamed up with ADF and decided to join two other educators in pushing back.
Watch her explain:
“That process included a lot of prayer … a lot of consideration, and, in spending time in prayer, really feeling like God was directing me to do this with my time — that this was important,” she said. “And it was a responsibility that I had to speak up for kids and for families.”
As a parent and grandparent, Figliola said she couldn’t imagine not knowing what was happening to her family members while in school. Ultimately, her faith and commitment to the kids forced her to speak out.
“I made this decision, because I am a Christian and I followed what I felt was correct — what was right,” she said, noting there were other teachers — and many parents — who supported her moves and expressed gratitude for what she was doing.
Of course, she has had her detractors as well, with some fellow educators no longer speaking to her over the matter. The two sides became evident as her fight against the policy persisted.
Vincent Wagner, senior counsel at ADF, told CBN News that Figliola and the two other teachers who joined her to combat the policy ended up landing a big win — a decision by the school district to offer a religious accommodation for teachers unwilling to violate their religious conscience.
“Under this new religious accommodation policy, Harrisonburg schools granted them an accommodation that said, ‘We’re not requiring you to do those things,’” Wagner said. “And then that was wrapped up in this final order that we agreed to with the school board that says the school board maintains that it doesn’t … require teachers to use pronouns that are inconsistent with sex and [doesn’t] require teachers to hide information from parents or lie to parents.”
Ultimately, the attorney said this offers a “clear statement” from the district on the matter — something that might not have happened had Figliola not stepped up to challenge the matter.
Wagner said it’s inappropriate for schools to try and force teachers to “keep important information from parents” and that ADF has consistently worked to help stop such efforts.
“We represent educators across the country who are objecting to these sorts of policies — Ohio, Indiana, all over the place,” he said. “They’re popping up and it’s just pernicious, this idea that schools need to somehow get between parents and their children and make decisions without involving parents about what’s best for their kids.”
Wagner hopes Figliola’s victory can be replicated in other places across the U.S. and pledged to “continue bringing lawsuits” if and when the issue arises.
As for Figliola, she encouraged other teachers struggling with the same battle she faced to persist and keep speaking the truth.
“Don’t give up, because there are protections and there is a path forward,” she said. “There is a path forward for those of us who believe that this is wrong to stay in our profession that we are so often passionate about doing, passionate about being with kids and supporting families, and we don’t have to stop that.”
Figliola continued, “It may not be comfortable at all times, but things that are really worth it may mean that we may have to be uncomfortable once in a while. But it is so worth it. I’m so glad I did this.”

LIV Golf leaders brace for stiff final-round challenge
LIV Golf leaders brace for stiff final-round challenge
Sam Horsfield, a meat pie lover from England, reckons it will take all-out aggression to triumph at LIV Golf’s Adelaide tournament.
******** Carlos Ortiz believes it takes respect; his countryman Abraham Ancer reckons it will come down to diligence.
The trio are joint leaders at nine under and carry a three-shot buffer from the field into Sunday’s final round at The Grange.
All are bracing for strong challenges if the stiff winds continue at the course in the seaside Adelaide suburb.
Horsfield led after the first round before being joined by the Mexicans on Saturday.
“The mentality on this tour, the guys are very aggressive,” said the 28-year-old from Manchester.
“And when you get some of the best players in the world being aggressive, it’s going to pay off for them.
“This golf course, because you can’t overpower it with the wind and how firm it is … (but) I think a lot of guys take that approach, there’s just a lot more aggression.”
Horsfield said he would prepare for the final round just as he did for the second.
“I’m going to go have a meat pie – they’re amazing in the clubhouse, I had two last night,” he said post-Saturday’s round.
Ortiz predicted a more conservative approach in the chase for the $US4 million winner’s cheque.
“It (the course) is definitely playing hard,” he said.
“I’m just trying not to hit it in bad spots … you really have to be respectful of the golf course, almost play a little bit defensive.
“And I think I’ve done a good job of that … I have honestly played quite conservative off the tee and into the greens and I think that has paid off.”
His countryman Ancer hoped the winds would blow again as forecast on Sunday.
“What you’ve got to do on this golf course, you have to be very smart,” he said.
“You have to be very diligent where you place your ball.”
The top trio are three shots clear of Chile’s Joaquin Niemann (six under) while Spain’s former world No.1 Jon Rahm lurking at five under.
Lucas Herbert, at three under, is the best-placed *********** with compatriots Marc Leishman (one under), Cam Smith (one over) and Matt Jones (two over) off the pace.
The quartet comprise the all *********** team Ripper GC who carrry slim hopes of successfully defending their team title from Adelaide last year – they’re nine shots behind leaders Majesticks GC captained by England’s Ian Poulter.

Clues and answer for Saturday, February 15
Clues and answer for Saturday, February 15
Hey, there! Today brings us the 1,337th edition of Wordle. That’s a significant number in certain circles. as it’s the name of an internet language in which letters are often replaced with digits. In this case, 1337 stems from the word “elite,” which was shortened to “leet” and then written as numbers. One thing that we certainly hope is leet is your Wordle streak. To help maintain that, here’s our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Saturday’s puzzle (#1,337).
It may be that you’re a Wordle newcomer and you’re not completely sure how to play the game. We’re here to help with that too.
What is Wordle?
Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game’s success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats.
The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it’s little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily.
How to play Wordle
To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day’s secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren’t in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard.
You’ll only have six guesses to find each day’s word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It’s also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once.
Wordle is free to play on the NYT’s website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak.
How to play Wordle more than once a day
If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication’s games, you don’t have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You’ll have access to an archive of more than 1,200 previous Wordle games. So if you’re a relative newcomer, you’ll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions.
In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day’s game.

Maoris call on NRL to prevent All Stars absences
Maoris call on NRL to prevent All Stars absences
Victorious Maori coach Adam Blair has called on the NRL to stand up to coaches who pressure players into withdrawing from All Stars matches.
Blair led the Maori to a 10-6 victory over the Indigenous in Parramatta on Saturday and used his post-match press conference to urge the NRL to police availability properly.
The retired Kiwis forward name-checked the Canberra Raiders, who will open their season in Las Vegas, as one of the leading culprits for encouraging players to make themselves unavailable.
“Everyone’s dream is to play NRL and if you sit on the fringe of that it’s hard to stand up to your coach and say, ‘Hey, I want to represent my people’,” Blair said.
“I understand how it works … the more the game (NRL) can expose us to this game, the more the game can say, ‘If you’re Maori, you’re available to play in this game’.
“The more they hold everyone accountable then it becomes easier for the clubs to go, ‘well, the game says you have to play – unless you’re injured – you go and play’.
“There’s so many talented players that could’ve been here but due to pressures… for example, I love our Canberra boys and we could have taken five or six of them and put them in our squad.
“But I get it, I’m on the other side now (working for Newcastle)… those are five of Canberra’s best players.”
Blair said Canberra prop Joe Tapine would have been one of the first names on his teamsheet along with James Fisher-Harris, who captained the side.
The Maori coach said Fisher-Harris’ insistence on playing for his side had rubbed off on the group’s younger players.
“When you have someone as strong and as passionate as Fish for our people, it brings the likes of Kalyn (Ponga) into the team,” Blair said.
“Keano Kini is only a couple of years into his career but is brave enough to stand up to his club and say, ‘I want to represent my people, because that’s who I am first and foremost’.
“The more we can have our best players on the field, the more we can continue to be proud about who we are, the more we can be staunch about us as people.
“There should be no question around whether you represent your culture or not.”

‘Substantially more work is required’
‘Substantially more work is required’
A new study published by oceanographers from the *********** Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS) found that remote atoll coral reefs are more resilient than previously thought because of their ability to exchange larvae across the coral systems.
The AIMS news release, published on Phys.org, detailed how coral reefs are suffering from the effects of the climate crisis. Rising global temperatures can cause coral to become stressed and expel the algae that live in their tissues, leaving their white skeletons exposed.
Bleaching, the name for this process, doesn’t kill the coral but leaves it vulnerable to starvation and disease. The new study shows even isolated reefs can self-seed and make a comeback.
Researchers studied isolated atoll coral reefs — ring-shaped coral reefs, islands, or series of islets that surround a lagoon — in the Scott system of reefs off the northwest coast of Australia. The team found that the corals are able to share larvae across the reef system and recover from disturbances over a ******* of years.
Isolated atoll reefs are more susceptible to damage from incidents like warmer waters and increasingly severe storms because they’re not connected to other reefs, which could share new corals and help recovery.
But the new research shows that these communities are actually able to share larvae within their own systems to allow new growth, and recuperate even after multiple damaging events.
Watch now: Would you wear a shirt made out of oysters?
Authors of the new study wrote, “Our findings highlight the previously overlooked role of local scale dispersal in driving recovery of isolated reef systems and emphasize the importance of targeted local management actions.”
If scientists can enhance and preserve local connectivity among the reefs, the coral systems could retain better health and build resilience. Reef systems are critical for the health of all marine ecosystems, and they help protect shore communities from storms.
Long-distance dispersal could also aid reef recovery, but more data needs to be collected on the subject. Researchers for the study noted, “Substantially more work is required to understand the role of long-distance dispersal (both from and to other reefs).”
The AIMS team used extensive modeling to incorporate ocean currents and other variables into their study. Dr. Camille Grimaldi, an AIMS research scientist, said, “Our study shows that the internal dynamics of a reef system play a key role and influence how effectively a reef can self-seed and recover from disturbances.”

One dead after small boat sinks in attempted crossing
One dead after small boat sinks in attempted crossing
A migrant has died after trying to cross the English Channel in a small boat on Friday evening, the French coastguard has said.
A further 69 were rescued after the boat sank off the coast of Calais. Only half of those onboard were found to be wearing lifejackets.
Two people were unconscious when brought on to a rescue vessel, the coastguard said – one of whom was rescusitated by medics and the other was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The other migrants onboard were returned to Calais.
Several attempted crossings were reported to the Gris-Nez surveillance and rescue centre on Friday night, a statement on the incident said.
A French vessel began monitoring the small boat after it left Calais. The boat started to take on water towards the end of the night, the coastguard said.
It added that rescue crews “immediately” went to the aid of the small boat.
The unconscious person who could not be resuscitated by medics was evacuated using a Belgian sea rescue helicopter to a hospital in Marck-en-Calais, where they were pronounced dead.
The coastguard said a French Navy Dauphin helicopter was monitoring the area where the boat sank “to confirm the successful recovery of all the castaways”.
It warned that the part of the Channel was “a particularly dangerous sector, especially in the middle of winter for precarious and overloaded boats”, as it was a busy shipping lane with difficult weather conditions.
Other “life-saving resources” have been deployed in the area due to the numerous reports of attempted crossings on Friday, the coastguard said.
As of 10 February, 1,554 people had crossed the English Channel since the start of 2025.
In 2024 as a whole, 36,816 arrived in the *** on small boats. It was also the deadliest year on record for migrant crossings of the English Channel, according to the United Nations’ migration agency.

The United States has asked European capitals what they can contribute in terms of security guarantees for Ukraine, four European sources said on Saturday.
The sources said the U.S. had sent a document asking questions that include possible future troop contributions, with two of the sources adding that it had been sent earlier this week.
The Financial Times first reported that Washington had asked its European allies to provide information on weaponry, peacekeeping troops and security arrangements they could provide for Ukraine.
“The idea is evidently to see how European allies see the possible framework for negotiations to put an end to the conflict, and the possible engagement of Europe and the United States,” said a European diplomat aware of the document.
