Where to find the cartographer in Dawntrail in Avowed
Where to find the cartographer in Dawntrail in Avowed
After the tutorial teaches you the essential tips and tricks for playing Avowed, you will be set free in the Living Lands. Almost right away you will encounter a man named Sanza who has an important side quest for you to locate a missing cartographer. While you might be eager to complete the main story, side quests are important for unlocking new abilities and exploring the world. Unlike most side quests, however, this one only gives you a vague written description of where the cartographer is instead of a marker on your map to travel to. Even though each zone in Avowed isn’t massive, there is still a lot of ground to cover when looking for a single person. Here’s where you can find the cartographer in Dawntrail.
Where to find the missing cartographer
Obsidian
The side quest only says that the cartographer should be located near some cliffs on the east side of Dawntrail, which is quite a big place to search. The area you’re looking for is called Usher’s Hand and is directly east of Paradis. If you go out the eastern exit and head north, you will find it no problem.
Once you get in the area, you will get a search area on your map to look through, but the exact location of the cartographer is indicated on our map above. Be aware that you’re actually looking for a corpse because the cartographer didn’t make it, so listen for the little loot jingle that plays whenever you’re near some treasure to help you find it. Once you find their body, grab their loot and the map beside them. Take this to Sanza who has returned to his emporium inside of Paradis to tell him the bad news and get your reward.

New Insights Into Older Hearts
New Insights Into Older Hearts
It turns out that the Isley Brothers, who sang that 1966 Motown hit “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” were onto something when they linked age to an aching and flagging heart.
Heart disease, the nation’s leading cause of death and disability, has been diagnosed in about 6 percent of Americans ages 45 to 64, but in more than 18 percent of those over 65, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Old hearts are physiologically different. “The heart gets stiffer as we age,” said Dr. John Dodson, director of the geriatric cardiology program at NYU Langone Health. “It doesn’t fill with blood as easily. The muscles don’t relax as well.”
Age also changes the blood vessels, which can grow rigid and cause hypertension, and the nerve fibers that send electrical impulses to the heart. It affects other organs and systems that play a role in cardiovascular health, too. “After age 75 is when things accelerate,” Dr. Dodson said.
But in recent years, dramatic improvements in treatments for many kinds of cardiovascular conditions have helped reduce both heart attacks and cardiac deaths.
“Cardiology has been blessed with a lot of progress and research and drug development,” said Dr. Karen Alexander, who teaches geriatric cardiology at Duke University. “The medications are better than ever, and we know how to use them better.”
That can complicate decision-making for heart patients in their 70s and beyond, however. Certain procedures or regimens may not markedly extend the lives of older patients or improve the quality of their remaining years, especially if they have already suffered heart attacks and are contending with other illnesses as well.
“We don’t need to open an artery just because there’s an artery to be opened,” said Dr. Alexander, referring to inserting a stent. “We need to think of the whole person.”
Recent research indicates that some frequently used medical approaches don’t pay off for older patients, while too few of them take advantage of one intervention that does.
Here’s some of what researchers are learning about old hearts:
A Shock to the Heart
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or I.C.D., is a small battery-powered device that is placed under the skin and delivers a shock in the case of sudden cardiac arrest. “It’s easy to sell these things to patients,” said Dr. Daniel Matlock, a geriatrician and researcher at the University of Colorado. “You say, ‘This can prevent sudden cardiac death.’ The patient says, ‘That sounds great.’”
In 2005, an influential study persuaded Medicare to cover I.C.D.s in patients with heart failure, even those without high-risk arrhythmias, and “it just took off,” Dr. Matlock said.
From 2015 through September 2024, surgeons implanted 585,000 such devices in patients’ chests, according to the American College of Cardiology’s registry. That’s probably an undercount, as not all hospitals participate in the registry.
But in 2017, among patients with nonischemic heart failure (meaning that the heart isn’t pumping effectively but there is no blocked artery), another influential study showed that I.C.D.s did not reduce mortality for patients over 70. The device only prevented sudden cardiac deaths, the authors noted — and those occur more frequently in younger patients.
Moreover, “at 85 or 90, sudden death is not necessarily the worst thing that can happen,” Dr. Matlock said, compared to death from “progressive heart failure, which can go quickly or last for years; it’s unpredictable.” The wallop of an I.C.D. shock can also frighten and distress older patients, who often are unaware that the device can be deactivated with a computer.
Cardiologists and researchers still debate how much I.C.D.s benefit older patients. But because cardiac drugs have grown so much more potent since 2005, a major multisite study is underway to determine, among patients at lower risk of sudden death, whether medications alone might now be more effective.
Invasive procedures
Medications alone already appear to be at least as effective in treating older people who have suffered the kind of heart attacks not caused by a suddenly and completely blocked artery. (Technically these are referred to as NSTEMI, for non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.)
Half of these occur in people over 70, said Dr. Vijay Kunadian, a professor of interventional cardiology at Newcastle University in England and the lead author of a recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine.
“Older people often are underrepresented in research,” Dr. Kunadian said. “There are a lot of preconceived biases.” So her team recruited an older-than-typical sample (average age 82) in which to compare the benefits of conservative and invasive treatment.
Half of the 1,500 patients in the study began a regimen of cardiac medications that included blood thinners, statins, beta blockers and ACE inhibitors. The other half had more invasive treatment, starting with an angiogram (an X-ray of the blood vessels). Then, roughly half of that group received a stent or, in much smaller numbers, underwent bypass surgery. These patients were also prescribed the same kinds of medications as the patients who were treated with drugs alone.
Over four years, the team found no difference in the patients’ risk of cardiovascular death or a nonfatal heart attack. Although surgical risks generally rise with age, complications were low in both groups.
Facing such situations, older patients and their families need to ask important questions, Dr. Alexander said: “How is this going to help me, and what are the other options, especially if it’s invasive? Is it necessary? What if I don’t do this?”
Dr. Kunadian agreed. “One size does not fit all in this group,” she said. Invasive treatment did not benefit patients, but it didn’t harm them, either.
Still, Dr. Kunadian said, “if they’re very frail, living in a nursing home with dementia, with a number of other conditions, it’s reasonable to say it’s in their best interest to use medical therapy alone.”
Cardiac Rehabilitation
One intervention known to benefit patients with heart disease is cardiac rehabilitation: a program of regular, supervised exercise that significantly reduces heart attacks, hospitalization and cardiovascular deaths.
But cardiac rehab remains perennially underused. Only about one-quarter of eligible patients participate, Dr. Dodson said, and among older adults, who could benefit even more, the proportion is lower still.
“There are barriers for people in the 70s and 80s,” he said. They have to show up at a facility to exercise, so sometimes “transportation is a problem.”
And, he added, “people can get deconditioned or afraid of activity. They may worry about falling.”
The in-person NYU Langone program involves three exercise sessions a week for three months, with nutritional and psychological counseling. Since enrollment among seniors had been disappointing, researchers tried replicating it with a remote program.
They offered it to patients (average age 71) with ischemic heart disease (caused by narrowed arteries, which impede blood and oxygen flow to the heart) who had suffered a heart attack or undergone a stent procedure. Each received a tablet computer and broadband access so that they could undertake a rehab program at home. An exercise therapist checked in by phone weekly.
At-home participation fell off over time, however. After three months, those assigned to remote rehab showed no greater functional capacity — measured by how far they could walk in six minutes — than a similar group who followed the usual care.
Was that because seniors struggled with the technology? Or feared exercising with heart problems? Would working out in person, alongside others on treadmills and elliptical trainers, inspire more engagement?
“We need to figure out the delivery system that’s most effective,” Dr. Dodson said. “What’s most motivating for older patients?” He’ll be trying again.

Perplexity one-ups Gemini and ChatGPT with a fantastic AI freebie
Perplexity one-ups Gemini and ChatGPT with a fantastic AI freebie
What if you tell an AI chatbot to search the web, look up a certain kind of source, and then create a detailed report based on all the information it has gleaned? Well, Gemini can do it, for $20 a month. Or $200 each month, if you prefer ChatGPT.
Perplexity will do it for free. A few times each day, that is. Perplexity is calling its latest tool, Deep Research. Just like OpenAI. And Google Gemini before it.
So, what’s the fuss all about? Think of it as a research assistant, who takes the drudgery of looking up sources, taking notes, and then handing over a well-prepared report.
Performing a task like that takes a lot of computing power, and as a result, it is expensive. Perplexity will offer an unlimited number of Deep Research queries to its subscribers, but free users can enjoy “a limited number of answers per day.”
Perplexity
“It excels at a range of expert-level tasks—from finance and marketing to product research—and attains high benchmarks on Humanity’s Last Exam,” says the company. Deep Research by Perplexity is currently limited to the web, but will soon arrive on Android and iOS mobile apps, as well.
To launch a Deep Research query, users will have to select the namesake option from the model selection dropdown, right by the text field. Once the research work is over, users will be able to export it directly as a document or PDF file.
There’s also an option to convert it into an online Perplexity Page, which is shareable with anyone as a web link. In Gemini’s case, you can directly import it to Google Docs, as well.
Perplexity
The company claims Perplexity Deep Research is better than Google’s Gemini model with Thinking capabilities, OpenAI’s o3-mini and o1 models, and the buzzy new DeepSeek-R1 model. It only ranks below OpenAI Deep Research on the Humanity’s Last Exam benchmark.
I’ve extensively used Gemini Deep Research for looking through scientific papers and archives, and it does a fantastic job of pulling up the relevant information and simplifying it. It is also particularly effective at pulling up notices from government agencies and handles legal updates quite well.
OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, also confirmed a few days ago that the company will offer two Deep Research queries to free users per month. For those paying a $20 monthly fee for ChatGPT Plus, they will get 10 Deep Research shots each month.

Dan Sundheim’s D1 Capital sells BAC, MSFT in fourth quarter, buys 3M
Dan Sundheim’s D1 Capital sells BAC, MSFT in fourth quarter, buys 3M
Hedge fund D1 Capital sold some of its blue-chip positions during the fourth quarter and added some stocks that have been hot to start 2025, according to a securities filing. The quarterly report shows Daniel Sundheim’s fund exited several positions, including Bank of America and Microsoft , and also reduced its stake in Amazon . D1’s new positions include 3M , AppLovin , Elevance Health , Delta Air Lines and Capital One Financial . The new additions of 3M and Elevance Health were both among the fund’s top 10 equity positions as of Dec. 31, according to the filing. Instacart remained the fund’s single biggest holding, with a quarter-end value of more than $900 million. The filing is a snapshot of the fund’s holdings as of Dec. 31 and does not reveal trades made during the quarter or since. The fund could also have other non-equity holdings that are not included. If D1 has held on to some of its newest stocks, the fund could be having a strong first quarter. Shares of AppLovin are up 57% since the start of the year, and 3M is up 15%. The fund also added a position of about $93 million in Vistra Corp. , a utility stock that rose sharply last year for its exposure to artificial intelligence energy needs. That stock is up about 22% so far this year despite falling sharply during the DeepSeek sell-off in January. Elsewhere, D1 exited positions in Starbucks , Carnival Corp and Viking Holdings . The fund still has a sizable position in one cruise stock with Royal Caribbean . Sundheim, who previously worked at Viking Global, started D1 in 2017. He is on the board of directors at Instacart.

Scholz hits back at Vance as Munich Security Conference enters day 2
Scholz hits back at Vance as Munich Security Conference enters day 2
******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz vehemently rejected remarks made by US Vice President JD Vance after he lectured European leaders on democracy and free speech, with the ******* leader hitting back on day two of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Saturday.
Vance’s much-anticipated speech on the first day of the high-profile gathering of world leaders and foreign policy experts stunned Washington’s European allies after he sharply criticized mainstream European politicians as insufficiently democratic, demanding more openness to right-wing populists and urging a crackdown on migration.
The comments come at a particularly delicate time for Germany, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is polling in second place ahead of elections on February 23. Mainstream parties have all vowed to maintain a political “firewall” to keep the anti-immigration, eurosceptic party from power.
Scholz slammed Vance for his remarks, insisting there should be no outside interference in the ******* election campaign.
Speaking at MSC on Saturday morning, Scholz said that members of the AfD trivialize Germany’s Nazi past and the monstrous crimes of Nazism.
“That is why we will not accept outsiders interfering in favour of this party in our democracy, in our elections, in the process of democratic opinion-forming,” said Scholz. “That is unbecoming – especially among friends and allies, and we strongly reject this.”
In his speech on Friday, Vance indirectly referenced the ******* debate about distancing from the AfD by saying: “There is no place for firewalls.”
Vance went even further in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published earlier on Friday, when he told ******* political parties to start cooperating with the AfD – a taboo for Scholz and other mainstream politicians.
The US vice president also met AfD co-leader Alice Weidel at his Munich hotel after delivering his remarks. The party, which is being monitored as a suspected extremist group by domestic intelligence, has been excluded from the gathering under way in Munich.
Vance did not meet Scholz, which a ******* government spokesman said was due to scheduling problems.
Unlike Vance, Scholz addresses Ukraine
Despite politics dominating headlines on the first day of the three-day event, the MSC is a major annual gathering of world leaders and foreign policy experts who focus largely on security and defence.
This year, the 60 world leaders and more than 100 ministers were set to focus on the Ukraine war, the situation in Israel and the ************ Territories and Syria.
After Vance almost completely sidestepped Ukraine in his speech, despite high expectations that he would use the conference to lay out the Trump administration’s vision on how to end the war, Scholz insisted that any negotiations with Russia must respect Ukraine’s “sovereign independence.”
He stressed that Ukraine must be enabled to effectively defend itself with substantial military aid in a peace settlement.
“Ukraine must have armed forces at the end of any negotiated solution that can repel any renewed Russian attack. Financially, materially, and logistically, this will be an enormous challenge,” Scholz said.
The ******* chancellor emphasized that European and trans-Atlantic partners will continue to be needed for this effort.
His comments come after US President Donald Trump announced plans to hold peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine.
Scholz warned that a victory for Russia or the collapse of Ukraine would not create peace. He also said that a dictated peace would never receive Germany’s support.
“We will also not agree to any solution that leads to a decoupling of European and US security,” he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was set to address the conference next, and is expected to respond to a peace initiative launched by Trump in his call with Putin this week.
Vance told Zelensky on the sidelines of the Munich gathering on Friday that Washington aims to achieve a “durable, lasting peace,” though it remained unclear how this would be achieved, as Moscow’s war on Ukraine is set to enter a fourth year.

Uber accuses DoorDash of anti-competitive practices in a lawsuit
Uber accuses DoorDash of anti-competitive practices in a lawsuit
Uber is suing DoorDash, accusing the biggest food delivery provider in the US of putting pressure on restaurants to exclusively use its services. According to The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, Uber filed the lawsuit in California on February 14. Uber said it filed the lawsuit after hearing from “restaurants across the country” that were left with no choice but to “cave to [DoorDash’s] demands or pay the price.”
Both DoorDash and Uber Eats offer their delivery services to restaurants, even for customers who buy from an establishment’s own website or app. At the same time, they also offer advertising within their apps for those that want to promote their businesses. DoorDash has a significantly larger share of the market than Uber Eats and had previously said that 90 percent of major restaurants in the US is available on its platform.
DoorDash allegedly threatened to charge higher commission rates for handling orders made through its marketplace if the restaurant is also on Uber Eats. In its complaint, Uber said that that in one instance, the company threatened to raise a restaurant’s commission rate by 30 percent per order placed. The lawsuit stated another instance wherein DoorDash allegedly told a restaurant that it would cost them millions of dollars in additional fees if it also teamed up with Uber. In 2024, a large restaurant group scrapped long-running plans to launch on Uber after threats from DoorDash to increase its commission rates, Uber said. In addition, DoorDash allegedly threatened to demote restaurants also available on Uber within its app.
Uber is now asking the court to compel DoorDash to change its business practices. Meanwhile, DoorDash denied all accusations. “Uber’s case has no merit,” the company said in a statement. “Their claims are unfounded and based on their inability to offer merchants, consumers, or couriers a quality alternative.”

How to buy a cheap robot vacuum in the Presidents’ Day sales – 5 shopping tips from a deals expert
How to buy a cheap robot vacuum in the Presidents’ Day sales – 5 shopping tips from a deals expert
Seasonal shopping events are a great time to shop for robot vacuums, and we’re seeing some excellent price drops on these automated home helpers amongst this year’s Presidents’ Day deals.
There are plenty of price-drops around, so it pays to go in with a plan. I write about robot vacuums for a living (including putting together TechRadar’s best robot vacuums and best robovacs for **** hair lists) so I know the market really well. I’ve also been covering deals events since 2017, so I have plenty of experience in how to navigate these sales to get the best bargains. The aim is to come out with the right bot for your needs, at a genuinely good price. To that end, here are my five top tips for scoring the best robovac deal in the Presidents’ Day sales.
#1. Stick to brand names you can trust
At the cheapest end of the offers, you’ll start to see brand names that you’ve never heard of. That’s especially true if you’re shopping on Amazon. Generally, I’d avoid these, even if the prices are tantalizingly cheap. Look around for official reviews (from professionals, not just the customer comments section) and get a feel for the size and reputation of the brand. Making good robot vacuums is difficult so you want to stick the people who know what they’re doing, or you’ll end up with a bot that’s just an expensive doorstop.
The brands that often score highly in our reviews include: Roborock, Dreame, Narwal, Ecovacs, Eufy, and Shark. iRobot Roomba can also be worth a look.
Brands like Roborock consistently score highly in our reviews (Image credit: Future)
#2. Shop around
You can expect all the big retailers will run a Presidents’ Day *****, so once you’ve chosen the model you want, check the price at a range of places. If I spot a deal, I’ll check the price at the following places (I’ve linked direct to the robovac listings for each):
All of those retailers have had strong seasonal discounts on robot vacuums in previous sales events. I’ll also head to the brand’s own website (so Shark or iRobot, for example) to see what’s going on there.
Generally, I’ll find that the discount is being price-matched everywhere; including the brand’s own site. Occasionally, though, one specific retailer will have a standout deal or other perks like extended warranty or free delivery that make it a better choice. If that’s not the case, however, then just pick your favorite shopping destination.
#3. Opt for an older model
The newest flagship models are truly amazing beasts, but in the real world, you probably don’t actually need the latest-and-greatest robot vacuum. The rate of meaningful improvement has slowed down in recent years (at least, until the next wave of robovacs that have robotic arms hit the shelves), so opting for a slightly older option is a great way to maximize your value for money.
Some of the newest models will get Presidents’ Day discounts, but they’ll likely still be in the four figure bracket. Opting for a model that’s a couple of years old will likely yield batter value for money, without much of a sacrifice in functionality.
4. Make sure it meets your needs
Robovacs range massively performance and features, so it’s important to pick one that does what you need it to. I’ve covered this in more detail in my complete guide to how to choose a robot vacuum, but there are a couple of key things you’ll want to decide to narrow down your options quickly.
Firstly, do you want it to be able to mop as well as vacuuming? This is far more common than you might expect if you’re not familiar with the market. In fact, these days I’d say it’s almost the norm for most robovacs to be hybrid models. They won’t deep clean like a manual mop, but they can be good at staying on top of surface cleaning, and keeping your hard floors looking smarter than you’d achieve with vacuuming alone.
If you do decide to go for a combination vacuum-mop, rotating circular mop pads tend to do a better job than static D-shaped mop pads. Cheap models that just drag a wet-wipe across your floor aren’t worth the effort.
Spinning mop pads like these tend to do the best job of scrubbing (Image credit: Future)
Next, what kind of dock do you need? A very basic dock will be very compact, and will just recharge your robovac. A slightly more advanced dock will automatically ***** the dust from the robot’s small onboard dustbin into a larger bin in the dock. These options are bulkier, but if you have a larger home and/or pets, they’re worth the extra investment in cost and space, because they mean you won’t have to be constantly emptying your robovac manually.
Meanwhile, the priciest dock options can refill your bot’s onboard tanks and even clean and dry the mop pads. Expect to pay rather a lot for this kind of functionality, though.
#5. Set a budget
At TechRadar we have set robot vacuum price bands based on average prices on the wider market. They are as follows:
Budget: less than $500
Mid-range: $500-$800
Premium: over $800
That’s at list price. During shopping events like the Presidents’ Day sales, you’ll often find robot vacuums discounted into a lower price bracket. It’s a great time to pick up a better quality, more feature-rich robovac than you’d generally be able to afford. I often see the best-value deals around the $500-$700 mark.
You’ll also see some ultra-bargain bots for around $150-$200. These will be very basic; don’t expect things like efficient navigation and object avoidance. If you want a really cheap option, my guide to the best budget robot vacuums rounds up our best-reviewed models.

British couple detained in Iran in ‘distressing situation’, family says
British couple detained in Iran in ‘distressing situation’, family says
Caroline Hawley
Diplomatic correspondent
Foreign Office
Craig and Lindsay Foreman crossed into Iran in December and planned to be in neighbouring Pakistan five days later
The family of a British couple in custody in Iran, named as Craig and Lindsay Foreman, says they are in a “distressing situation”.
The couple, in their early 50s, who were on a trip across the world on motorbikes, were arrested in January but the news emerged on Thursday when state-run Iranian media reported they were being held on unspecified security charges.
A photograph was published of the couple, with their faces blurred, meeting the British ambassador Hugo Shorter at the public prosecutor’s office in Kerman.
A statement issued by the Foreign Office on their family’s behalf, said: “This unexpected turn of events has caused significant concern for our entire family, and we are deeply focused on ensuring their safety and well-being during this trying time.”
It added: “We are actively engaging with the British government and relevant authorities, working diligently to navigate the complexities of this matter. The family are united in our determination to secure their safe return.”
The family said the “emotional burden of this situation weighs heavily on us”, and added that “the outpouring of support from friends, family, and the community” had “provided us with strength and encouragement as we face this ordeal”.
Mr and Mrs Foreman were heading for Australia on their journey across the globe.
They had crossed into Iran from Armenia on 30 December and had planned to be in Pakistan on 4 January.
After staying in the cities of Tabriz, Tehran and Isfahan, accompanied by a tour guide, they travelled on to Kerman but never checked into their hotel there.
In a series of social media posts before they were detained, the couple described their joy at being in Iran.
Lindsay Foreman, a life coach with a doctorate in psychology, said she was “having an amazing time”.
Her husband, Craig, who is a carpenter, spoke of the “lovely people” of a “lovely country”,
Mrs Foreman posted a picture of herself on 3 January meeting a cleric in the town of Isfahan. Writing on Instagram, she said: “Travel continues to teach me that humanity’s core is shared: kindness, humility, and respect for one another.”
On Facebook that day she wrote: “Despite differences in culture, language, and traditions, we’ve seen something beautifully universal: kindness, humour, hospitality – and a shared love of good food!”
The Iranian authorities have not said what the couple are accused of.
They had moved from East Sussex to start a new life in Andalucia, Spain, in 2019.
Mrs Foreman is reported to have been carrying out a research project on their journey to Australia asking people what it means to be human and what constitutes a good life.
She was due to present her findings at a conference on positive psychology in Brisbane in July.
Posting on Instagram she acknowledged that travelling to the Iran, against Foreign Office advice, and to Pakistan was risky and “slightly scary”.
“Yes, we’re aware of the risks,” she wrote. “But we also know the rewards of meeting incredible people, hearing their stories, and seeing the breathtaking landscapes of these regions could far outweigh the fear.”
She added: “From the vast deserts of Iran to the towering peaks of Pakistan, we hope to share the beauty, hospitality, and humanity that often go unnoticed.”
The Foreign Office says it is in contact with the local authorities in Iran, and is providing the couple with consular assistance.
It currently advises British nationals to avoid all travel to Iran.
“British and British-Iranian dual nationals are at significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention,” advice says. “Having a British passport or connections to the *** can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you.”
Over the past few years, dozens of foreign and dual nationals have been arrested in Iran on vague security-related charges.
Human rights groups say they are often used by the Iranian authorities for political leverage.

How to respec in Avowed
How to respec in Avowed
Avowed is a very flexible game in terms of letting you use any weapon or piece of armor you want. Having a variety of offensive options is one of the best tips and tricks we can give you, but skills are slightly different. You will be investing points into your stats, to unlock abilities, and unlock companion abilities as you earn XP and level up. These skills will completely change how your game plays both in and out of combat, but you don’t have to stick with whatever direction you picked first if you end up regretting it. Here’s how you can respec your character in Avowed.
Obsidian
How to respec
You can respec your skills, abilities, and companion abilities individually in Avowed. There is a cost associated with doing so, but it is so small that it should never be a barrier.
Step 1: Pause the game and go to either your Character, or Abilities tab.
Step 2: If you want to refund your character points, which determine your stats and dialogue options, hold Y on controller or press R on PC to spend 100 gold to reset your spent points.
Step 3: If you are resetting abilities, you will need to go to the Ability tab and press the same button.
You cannot reset a single skill tree, however. If you reset your ability points, every ability tree will be reset.
Step 4: Finally, you can go to the Companion tab in the Abilities menu to reset each individual companion’s skills.
Respecing initially costs 100 gold, but the price increases the higher level you get. Again, it never becomes too big of a barrier to do, but be aware that you won’t be able to do it as much as you want later in the game.

Jy Simpkin: Indigenous All Stars midfielder wins Polly Farmer Medal in emotional scenes
From the emotion of commemorating his late grandfather to the joy of having the most fun he’s had on a footy field, Jy Simpkin’s afternoon at Optus Stadium had it all.
The North Melbourne midfielder was bestowed the Polly Farmer Medal as best afield after leading from the front in the Indigenous All Stars’ comprehensive win over Fremantle.
Simpkin’s day included game highs of 30 touches and 10 tackles, but it was a third-term goal that produced the day’s most touching moment. The 26-year-old pointed to the sky to celebrate his Pop before being consoled by teammates after heading to the bench.

Simpkin won the Farmer Medal from former teammate Jason Horne-Francis, earning best-on-ground votes from three of the four judges.
Having celebrated just 15 wins in 79 games over the past four seasons at North, Simpkin was thrilled to get the chance to soak in a victory. But he said the joy of being able to line up alongside his fellow Indigenous stars in the return of the concept for the first time in a decade meant the result was secondary to the connection and brotherhood he felt this week in Perth.
“It was so fun. I can’t remember enjoying football that much,” he said.
“We’ve spent the past couple of days together, and the connection we’ve built in such a short ******* of time… it was super exciting and super fun.
“Even just sitting on the bench and watching the boys run and carry and move the footy… it was awesome.”
Simpkin said he had been proud of his team being able to band together in such a short space of time and achieve their goal of what they were aiming to produce on the field.
“We knew wanted to play with speed, play with flair and show our skill,” Simpkin said.
“You probably would have seen the connection and bond we had out there. Everything we could have asked for, we went out and did.”

Letters on Gov. Stitt, Trump and Musk, political hypocrisy and George Washington
Letters on Gov. Stitt, Trump and Musk, political hypocrisy and George Washington
Stitt’s logic confusing on virtual learning
Make this make sense.
Gov. Kevin Stitt and many legislators want to eliminate virtual learning days in public schools. But they also support giving St. Isidore, a VIRTUAL charter school, $25.7 million over the first five years to have virtual days every school day.
And to confuse the logic even further, Stitt’s office said that there are NO restrictions whatsoever on what a charter school can or cannot do. Wouldn’t you expect there to be some requirements to ensure adequate learning before giving them millions? Yet, Stitt is willing to spend taxpayer funds to fight the courts, up to the Supreme Court, to give millions of taxpayer dollars to a school that is completely virtual learning, with no restrictions whatsoever, even though he proclaimed he wanted to end virtual days in 2025.
So which is it? Do you think “logic” and actions such as this are the reason that Oklahoma is 49th in education?
― Janis Blevins, Oklahoma City

Dangerous actions by Trump and Musk
Trump abruptly shut down aid that saves lives around the world, sticking America’s farmers with tons of unsold food and health agencies with unused medicines. These programs cost less than 1% of our entire budget, but foster priceless goodwill that keeps our enemies from converting poorer countries into adversaries.
Trump wants to eliminate thousands of federal workers, including FBI agents, CIA agents and public health experts. Terrorist threats, cybersecurity attacks, Bird flu and tuberculosis will not pause while we hire and train their replacements.
In 2023, one fatal airplane accident occurred out of 37 million flights, but Elon Musk says his 20-something techies can “make rapid improvements” in FAA systems that have evolved over decades. What could possibly go wrong? Cutting waste is an appropriate goal, but blindly dismissing thousands of experienced civil servants and endangering critical systems is dangerous beyond words.
More: Dissolving USAID harms U.S. global influence and does not strengthen our nation | Opinion
One news service estimates that Trump and Musk have violated at least 18 federal laws in their first three weeks of feverish chaos. Yet congressional Republicans are silent. Why?
Republicans have yet to reveal their newest tax cut. If Trump’s frantic rummaging under the couch cushions — and damaging them in the process — is any indication, the gift Republicans are desperate to give America’s ultra-rich billionaires is beyond huge. As in 2017, the middle and lower classes will likely get whatever crumbs are left under those frayed and damaged cushions. But worse than that, we will have been cheated out of a country that just one month ago was a shining beacon on the hill, a great democracy filled with compassion, and, according to the World Bank, had the world’s greatest economy.
So much for greatness.
― Scott McLaughin, Midwest City
Let’s not be hypocritical about President Trump
Right now, many are apoplectic about Elon Musk and “19-year-olds” advising President Trump regarding various federal agencies and their subordinates. It is all as hilarious as it is demonstratively hypocritical.
First, how many pundits during the preceding presidency expressed outrage, let alone panic, as a cognitively challenged individual sat behind the Resolute Desk?
Secondly, no one understood what the USAID was, let alone that multiple federal workers have been working under COVID-era auspices until DOGE made it public. Much like Biden’s unelected governing advisers, DOGE reports to the president, who, himself, is making final determinations. The Executive Branch has this prerogative much like the Biden administration did when it implemented policies that resulted in a flood of ******** immigrants, revisions to Title IX, and punitive COVID vaccine mandates.
Finally, President Trump is acting upon campaign promises he publicly delivered while actively seeking the highest office in this land. Democratic predecessor, President Obama, once declared that elections have consequences. His were expanding a domestic spying program upon the American people, using the IRS to impugn countless conservative nonprofit groups, and changing immigration processes that allowed for children and their parents to be separated (Dreamers initiative). Trump is exercising his election results to implement his agenda, which is buffered by his political philosophy and social outlook.
In other words, he is behaving as presidents do.
― Wayne Hull, Oklahoma City

Take back power from the political parties
Many people ask, “What in the world is going on in Washington, D.C.?” My response is simple: Congress has gone to sleep and the president is running wild. For some time it has appeared that Congress has been on vacation all year long. The word dysfunctional comes to mind. In reality, the majority has succumbed to the whims of a hooligan-staffed political party.
In his farewell address, President George Washington made a comment about political parties.
“However political parties may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”
If Congress doesn’t wake up and do the job the people hired them to do, the “power of the people” will cease to exist. We will succumb to being a third-rated nation run by a dictator.
It is up to the voters to stop Congress from meandering along while the president acts like he is the boss. He is not America’s boss. He is to take guidance from the people, represented by Congress, and do what they say. Congress is the full time representatives of the people.
If Congress doesn’t act, remember them the next election!
― Richard C. “*****” Hall, Norman
Why remove some Board of Education members?
This week, Gov. Kevin Stitt replaced three state board of education members citing poor standardized test performance and controversies. He pointed to low NAEP scores that rank Oklahoma 49th nationally — even though the board is entirely his appointees — raising questions about his judgement.
So why remove only half the board, if performance was the issue?
Adding complexity, the governor later shifted his rationale. He postured that collecting addresses and immigration status for children ages 6 to 8 is not a public safety concern. I think he weaponized this alteration to justify removing board members who supported the rule requiring proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status for school enrollment. Ponder this: If Gov. Stitt truly prioritized student outcomes, he should have overhauled the entire board — or even reconsidered his own leadership. Could the govenor be using education and students as political pawns to advance his political aspirations?
How will this impact of the upcoming state Board of Education agenda scheduled for the end of the month?
At that meeting, the board was supposed to vote on the proposed academic standards, which included the incorporation of American Indian social studies curriculum into the classroom. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with citizens of tribal nations.
Until Gov. Stitt’s appointees are confirmed by the Senate, will the former Board of Education members be permitted to serve?
The time-sensitive State of Oklahoma Board of Education vote is necessary to move the curriculum forward for legislative approval during their session.
Because of the dismissal of these members, the govenor removed the only citizen of a federally recognized nation of American Indians, Kendra Wesson. Because of this, our tribal nations are without representation on the Board of Education.
Oklahomans are urged to scrutinize the motivations behind these decisions.
― Theresa Hinman, Norman, a citizen of the Ponca Nation

F-35 test pilot shares what it’s like to jump from flying an old F-16 to Lockheed Martin’s newest 5th-gen stealth fighter
F-35 test pilot shares what it’s like to jump from flying an old F-16 to Lockheed Martin’s newest 5th-gen stealth fighter
Business Insider recently sat down with a test pilot for the F-35 stealth fighter jet.
She explained what it was like to jump from flying the older F-16 to the fifth-generation aircraft.
The biggest transition in the F-35 was the amount of information presented to the pilot.
A test pilot who made the jump from the now fifty-year-old F-16 to the new F-35 stealth fighter told Business Insider that it is a wildly different experience.
Think about the informational overload you would get from swapping out a decades-old pickup truck for a modern Tesla. There’s a lot of extra information pilots get from the F-35, which is equipped with a suite of new technologies compared to legacy aircraft.
Monessa Balzhiser, call sign “Siren,” is a pilot who has had the opportunity to move over to the new jet, working as an F-35 test pilot at Lockheed Martin’s production facility in Forth Worth, Texas, following years flying the F-16 for the US Air Force.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon, a Lockheed Martin airframe originally manufactured by General Dynamics, is a single-engine, multi-role aircraft that took its first flight over 50 years ago. The fourth-generation fighter jet was developed for the US Air Force but is now in service with more than two dozen militaries around the world, including — as of last year — the Ukrainian armed forces.
The F-16 was revolutionary from an aircraft design philosophy perspective, emerging as the first fly-by-wire fighter for improved air-to-air combat capabilities. But in the age of stealth aircraft and higher-end surface-to-air threats, the F-16, even with the upgrades the fighter has gotten over the years to ensure it still packs a punch, is losing its once formidable edge.

The much-newer F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter is a supersonic stealth aircraft that took its first flight nearly 20 years ago. The platform has evolved tremendously over the years.
The aircraft has faced criticism amid developmental setbacks, sustainability challenges, and rising costs (the expected lifetime cost of the program is now over $2 trillion), but the jet is constantly being upgraded and reworked for improved capability. Right now, no adversary capability compares, but new jets are coming out in rival nations. China, for instance, unveiled a number of new aircraft designs late last year, including what some suspect was a sixth-gen fighter prototype.
“The F-35 — we’re continuing to develop it,” Siren said.
“You’re going to see threats — adversaries — evolving,” so the priority is maintaining the advantage “to ensure we can come home safe,” she added.
The F-35 is the second fifth-generation fighter jet operated by the US after the F-22 Raptor and comes in three variants flown by the Air Force, Marines, and Navy. Developed and produced as part of a multinational partnership, many American allies operate the jet, with more looking to do so in the future.
Siren flew the F-16 in the Air Force for 13 years, a tenure that included several combat tours. At Lockheed Martin, she works as the chief production pilot for the F-35.
Test pilots are the first people to actually fly the F-35 off the factory floor. The fighter will get airborne several times — the first two or three flights are with the company — before the US government goes through all its checks to make sure the jet is all good and ready to be sold.
For Siren, the biggest difference when she made the transition from the F-16 to the new F-35 was the sheer amount of information being presented to the pilot.
A US Marine Corps F-35 is seen in San Diego, California.Kevin Carter/Getty Images
Siren said that in the F-16, “we had some of that information, but it was all shown on multiple different displays or formats.”
In the past, the pilot had to calculate how to use certain tactics or interpret the presented battlespace in their heads, but the F-35 does all of that for the pilot, allowing them to focus their efforts more on the ******* mission picture. Another F-35 test pilot previously told *** that it can be difficult to get good at managing all the information, comparing the jet to a sophisticated video game.
Siren said the biggest surprise of the F-35 was its flight controls in low-speed scenarios. The fifth-generation fighter jet is equipped with a better sensor suite, situational awareness, and data fusion capabilities than the F-16. Those advanced capabilities allow it to perform as more than a fighter jet.
The advantage of the F-16 has always been in its speed and turn rate, she told ***. “However, all the flight controls and the computer that runs the flight controls on the F-35 allows me to intercept — on the same mission — a slow, low Cessna going 80 knots to a high, fast flyer going Mach 1.2,” which is over 900 mph.
That helpful ability and “the high angle of attack that the F-35 can perform was what caught me off guard coming from the F-16,” she said.

RTX 4060, 4070, and 4080 gaming laptops are all tumbling in price for Presidents’ Day
RTX 4060, 4070, and 4080 gaming laptops are all tumbling in price for Presidents’ Day
I’ve said it before but it’s worth reiterating – this year’s ongoing Presidents’ Day sales are surprisingly good for gaming laptop deals. Retail events at leading retailers like Best Buy, HP, and B&H are currently coinciding with the imminent release of the next-gen RTX 5000 series laptops so we’re inundated with great clearance options.
For example, you can get a budget RTX 4060 gaming laptop for as little as $729 right now, which is just $30 off the cheapest price I’ve ever personally seen. A machine with an RTX 4060 isn’t high-end by any means but I think it’s well worth the cash at $729. Generally speaking, you usually see models with the lower-end RTX 4050 at this price point, and personally, I wouldn’t spring for a machine with that GPU. The RTX 4060 is much, much better for a wider range of titles at 1080p.
The best Presidents’ Day gaming laptop deals today, however, are definitely on the higher-end models. My personal favorites are the Asus G16 for $1,079 at Best Buy, the HP Omen 16T for $1,199 at HP, and the MSI Vector 16 HX for $1,799 at B&H Photo. These are all either carrying an RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 graphics card so they’re a good choice if you’re prioritizing higher performance. Again, these are all clearance deals in all but name so consider snapping them up if you’re not fussed about scoring an RTX 5070/5080 gaming laptop over the next few months!

Force steal Super Rugby win with miracle last-gasp try
Force steal Super Rugby win with miracle last-gasp try
Western Force playmaker Ben Donaldson has scored a miracle try and kicked the conversion to steal a Super Rugby Pacific win away from Moana Pasifika in a point-scoring bonanza in Perth.
Despite being hobbled by an ankle injury early in the second half half, the No.10 found a hole in the Pasifika defence after 26 phases and ran almost 70 metres to touch down in the 83rd minute.
Donaldson then converted his own try for a stunning 45-44 victory.
The home side looked down and out before Wallabies winger Dylan Pietsch showed fast feet to cross in the 75th minute, with Donaldson converting for the Force to trail 44-38.
They still had plenty of work to do and kept the ball in play before the Wallabies World Cup flyhalf made his move.
“It felt like we were going nowhere,” Donaldson told Stan Sport.
“Credit to our forwards, we spoke all week about getting set early, speed to set, and providing the platform for us and we just try and find gaps on the outside.
“I’m just happy with that result.”
With new captain, All ******* superstar Ardie Savea, at the helm, Moana looked headed for an upset victory at HBF Park.
Looking to honour his Samoan heritage, Savea joined Moana after 12 seasons with the Hurricanes and the No.8 was a constant threat in attack and defence.
Exciting young winger Kyren Taumoefolau collected a double among Moana’s haul of six tries and his side led 44-31 after 71 minutes.
“We knew the Force were going to be tough and we put ourselves right in there but we couldn’t hold it in that last quarter,” Savea said.
More than 50 points were scored in the first half alone in hot conditions, with the new look home side featuring nine club debutants including Wallabies lock Darcy Swain and former England hooker Nic Dolly in the match-day 23.
The Force scrambled back from an early 17-3 deficit with Force flanker Carlo Tizzano crossing twice to reduce the margin to three points, 27-24 at halftime
Ex-NSW flyer Pietsch came off the bench early in the second half and made an immediate impact, running on to a long cut-out pass from fellow Wallaby, scrumhalf Nic White.
He dashed 40 metres and was brought down just short of the line, with prop Marley Pearce finishing off the try for the Force to go ahead 31-29 at the 49 minute mark.
Force fans were then silenced for much of the second half as Pasifika stormed to the lead, adding three second half tries including one while Force prop Tom Robertson was yellow-carded with their scrum struggling.
Moana missed a chance to close out the match with Taumoefolau spilling the ball in the 79th minute.
That gave the Force the chance they were looking for and the home crowd were on their feet to cheer Donaldson home for the unlikely win.
“It was very tough, **** for tat there really,” said Force skipper Jeremy Williams.
“It was good to see the grit from the boys, bite down and claw our way back into it. It was good, positive signs.”
