  1. 4 Lesser-Known Coins That Are Worth Thousands of Dollars 4 Lesser-Known Coins That Are Worth Thousands of Dollars 221A / iStock.com Coins become valuable for several reasons, ranging from their historical value to their metal content. In nearly all cases, however, the most valuable coins are the rarest. Some rare coins have reached a certain level of fame because of their backstories. Find Out: These 11 Rare Coins Sold for Over $1 Million Discover Next: 4 Things You Must Do When Your Savings Reach $50,000 An example is the 1943 copper Lincoln penny, which was mistakenly minted during a World War II copper shortage and today is worth as much as $1 million. But there are also lesser-known coins that can fetch a lot of money on the collector’s market. Many are Lincoln pennies you might not think twice about if you found one in your loose change. Keep in mind that only coins in the best condition will command the highest prices. Here’s a look at four lesser-known coins that are worth thousands of dollars. Double die mistakes occur when the metal on a coin gets struck multiple times by the die or design stamp on either the front (obverse), reverse, or both sides. Double die mistakes in mint or near-mint condition usually sell for very high amounts. In the Small Date version of the 1970-S Small Date Lincoln Penny, the word “LIBERTY” is not as sharp or pronounced as in other versions, according to the Spruce Crafts website. It has an estimated value of $3,500. Read More: These 4 Rare Nickels From Over 20 Years Ago Are Worth a Ton Now This variety of the Lincoln cent was produced from 1998-2000, with 1999 being the rarest. As Spruce Crafts noted, the U.S. Mint mistakenly used a proof die to produce coins intended for circulation. In the wide version, the “AM” in America is clearly separated, whereas in normal specimens the letters “AM” are much closer together. One version of the coin sold at auction for $3,960 in November 2020, according to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) website. Here’s another double-die obverse Lincoln cent from the early 1970s that has gained favor with collectors. The phrases “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the coin’s front are “notable examples” of the doubling effect, according to a blog from Liberation of Sound. This penny’s high value is mainly because there are not a lot of specimens with this particular doubling. Per PCGS, the auction record for this coin took place in 2019 and totaled $14,400. Spruce Crafts calls this particular coin “exceedingly rare.” The U.S. Secret Service confiscated the early specimens until the Mint “admitted they were genuine.” Story Continues Source link #LesserKnown #Coins #Worth #Thousands #Dollars Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Over 300 flights delayed, 16 canceled at Denver airport after ground stop Over 300 flights delayed, 16 canceled at Denver airport after ground stop DENVER (KDVR) — Over a hundred flights are delayed and more than a dozen are canceled Saturday after a ground stop was lifted at the Denver International Airport. Saturday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day as a major snowstorm continues to impact travel in the mountains and snow is on the way in the Denver weather forecast. Skiers, snowboarders determined to reach mountains despite major I-70 backups The airport told FOX31 that a ground stop was issued for arriving planes around 7:30 a.m. due to an equipment outage with the Federal Aviation Administration. The ground stop was lifted as of 8:12 a.m., but many flights were impacted. According to online flight tracker FlightAware, as of just before 1 p.m., there are 16 canceled flights, including 14 on SkyWest and two on United. Additionally, 344 flights are delayed. Most of the delays are on United with 116, followed by SkyWest with 105 and Southwest with 78. About half of the impacted flights are departing from the airport and about half are arriving. More cancelations and delays could arise as wintry weather conditions are expected to impact travelers across much of Colorado on Saturday. If you’re flying out of Denver or picking someone up from the airport on Saturday, check the forecast and prepare for possibly wintry driving conditions, especially in the evening, and check FOX31’s Denver traffic map for live traffic conditions. 6. European leaders set to hold emergency summit on Ukraine European leaders set to hold emergency summit on Ukraine European leaders are set to gather for an emergency summit on the war in Ukraine as concerns grow over Donald Trump’s interventions on the peace process. Sir Keir Starmer, who is expected to attend the summit in Paris, said it was a “once-in-a-generation moment for our national security” and it was clear Europe must take a greater role in Nato. It comes after Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine said European leaders would be consulted but not take part in any talks between US and Russia over ending the war in Ukraine. US senior officials are due to meet with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia in coming days, US officials have said. In remarks likely to raise concern in Ukraine and among European allies, special envoy Keith Kellogg said previous negotiations had failed because too many parties had been involved. “It may be like chalk on the blackboard, it may grate a little bit, but I am telling you something that is really quite honest,” he said on Saturday. Sir Keir is understood to see his role as bringing US and Europe together to ensure a united approach to peace in Ukraine. The *** prime minister will discuss the views of European leaders when he visits US President Trump at the White House at the end of this month. A further meeting of European leaders together with President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected after the *** prime minister returns from Washington. Sir Keir said the *** would “work to ensure we keep the US and Europe together”, adding the two could not “allow any divisions in the alliance to distract” from “external enemies”. “This is a once in a generation moment for our national security where we engage with the reality of the world today and the threat we face from Russia,” he said. “It’s clear Europe must take on a greater role in Nato as we work with the United States to secure Ukraine’s future and face down the threat we face from Russia.” Earlier, Ukraine’s President Zelensky called for the creation of an “army of Europe” amid rising concern the US may no longer come to the continent’s aid. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he said US Vice-President JD Vance’s speech at the event had made it clear that the old relationship between Europe and America was “ending” and the continent “needs to adjust to that”. But Zelensky also said Ukraine would “never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement” after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to start peace talks. The US president earlier this week announced he had a lengthy conversation with the Russian leader and that negotiations to stop the “ridiculous war” in Ukraine would begin “immediately”. Trump then “informed” Zelensky of his plan. On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Russia’s foreign minister “building on” Wednesday’s call between Trump and Putin. Senior officials from the Trump administration will start peace talks with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia in the coming days, US Representative Michael McCaul told Reuters news agency. McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he understood Zelensky had been invited to take part in the Saudi talks, which were aimed at arranging a meeting with Trump, Putin and the Ukrainian president “to finally bring peace and end this conflict”. A day earlier, Vance had launched a scalding attack on European democracies, saying the greatest threat facing the continent was not from Russia and China, but “from within”. In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, he repeated the Trump administration’s line that Europe must “step up in a big way to provide for its own defence”. David Lammy has said the *** and EU countries must spend more on defence, with Europe facing an “existential question” even in the event of a negotiated peace in Ukraine. The *** foreign secretary told the Munich Security Conference on Saturday “Putin will not go away”, and that, while it was positive 23 Nato countries were now spending at least 2% of their GDP on defence, “we all know we have to go upward”. 7. Australia’s worst-selling utes, vans and people movers of 2024 Australia’s worst-selling utes, vans and people movers of 2024 We’ve already looked at Australia’s worst-selling cars and SUVs of 2024, and now it’s time to look at everything else. In diametric opposition to top-sellers like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux and HiAce are the below vehicles. Here, we’ve looked at key van, ute and people mover segments to see which were the worst-selling vehicles. As with previous instalments in this series, we’ve excluded vehicles launched or discontinued during 2024. MORE: Australia’s worst-selling SUVs of 2024MORE: Australia’s worst-selling cars of 2024 4×2 utes LDV eT60 Australia’s only electric ute (so far) was the worst-selling vehicle in its segment by a significant margin. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Just 28 examples of the LDV eT60 were delivered, down 64.6 per cent on the year prior. LDV has a more impressive electric ute coming this year called the eTerron 9, which unlike the rear-wheel drive eT60 is expected to be offered here in dual-motor all-wheel drive guise. MORE: Everything LDV T60 4×4 utes Jeep Gladiator The Jeep Gladiator is the odd man out in its segment. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Pitched as more of an off-road adventure vehicle than a workhorse and lacking a diesel option, it’s unlikely Jeep ever hoped to match the likes of the Toyota HiLux in sheer sales volume. Unfortunately for Jeep, Gladiator sales slumped by 36.5 per cent in 2024 to just 515 units. The next best-selling vehicle on ***** for the whole year was the SsangYong Musso with 3197 examples delivered. Jeep sales overall slumped by 48.7 per cent compared to 2023, with every vehicle posting double-digit declines except for the new Avenger. MORE: Everything Jeep Gladiator Large pickups Ram 3500 Ram had both the best-selling vehicle in the large pickup segment and the worst-selling vehicle. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Its pickup line is split across the 1500 and heavier-duty 2500 and 3500 models, with the 1500 taking on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150 and the 2500 and 3500 taking on the Chevrolet Silverado HD. A total of 47 3500 pickups were delivered during 2024, down 46 per cent on the previous year. Ram sold more than 10 times as many 2500s at 565 units. Both the 2500 and 3500 combined were outsold by the Chevrolet Silverado HD, with 1473 units. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Instead, that goes to the Peugeot Partner. Peugeot delivered 493 Partners during 2024, including 92 examples of the electric E-Partner. Overall, the Partner was down 10.7 per cent on the previous year. It remains to be seen whether the Kangoo will push past the Partner in 2025. Renault delivered 191 examples of its small van last year, with the two rivals living in the shadow of the Volkswagen Caddy (746 units). MORE: Everything Peugeot Partner Medium vans Peugeot Expert Another Peugeot claims the title here, with 320 examples of its Expert – including nine electric E-Experts – delivered during 2024. This was a decline of 10.6 per cent on 2023. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert It narrowly beat the LDV V80 for the title, of which 347 units were delivered, as well as the Mercedes-Benz Vito and eVito range which notched 399 deliveries. All of these models are small fry compared with the Ford Transit Custom and Hyundai Staria Load which outsold them by around 10-to-1, as well as the dominant Toyota HiAce which outsold those models by around 4-to-1. MORE: Everything Peugeot Expert People movers under $70,000 Volkswagen Caddy The Volkswagen Caddy may have outsold its rivals in cargo van guise, but as a people mover it fell short. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Mind you, absolutely nothing can come close to touching the Kia Carnival, which recorded 10,080 sales and an astonishing 83.4 per cent share of its segment. But the Caddy brought up the rear with just 114 deliveries (up 58.3 per cent), well behind the LDV MIFA (474 deliveries). MORE: Everything Volkswagen Caddy People movers over $70,000 Mercedes-Benz EQV While VFACTS data often combines vehicles – for example Peugeot’s diesel-powered Expert and electric E-Expert – in the case of Mercedes-Benz’s people mover lineup almost every nameplate is split out. The tallies for Vito Tourer and eVito Tourer models, however, are combined, with a total of 105 deliveries recorded. The electric EQV may have come last, but it’s not much of a jump to the electric LDV MIFA 9 of which just 20 examples were delivered. 8. What Trump-supporting federal workers think of his blitz of moves to shake up the government What Trump-supporting federal workers think of his blitz of moves to shake up the government Trump’s plan to reshape the federal workforce is underway. Some federal workers told *** they voted for Trump thinking he would help the economy and struggling Americans. While they support cutting government waste, some don’t think all federal workers should be targeted. Many federal workers have expressed outrage and despair at President Donald Trump’s workforce mandates — but what about those who filled in the bubble next to his name on the ballot? “I voted for Trump. I wanted to see some positive change,” a federal employee of 17 years told Business Insider, adding that they didn’t know that change would put them at risk of losing their job. While some of the hot-button issues Trump is tackling, like eliminating DEI initiatives and cutting spending, may resonate with right-leaning workers, policies like remote work and cutting the government’s head count haven’t traditionally been partisan matters. As of Thursday, about 75,000 federal employees had accepted the President’s buyout offer. That’s about 3.75% of the federal workforce, inching closer to the White House’s goal of reducing the federal staff count by 5% to 10%. Four federal employees who say they voted for Trump spoke to Business Insider about their feelings on Trump’s approach to the federal workforce. *** granted their requests for anonymity and verified their identities. Trump voters said they support the cost-cutting mission While the federal workers *** spoke with don’t fully support certain policies affecting them, some stand by the overall mission to reduce government waste. One federal worker told *** that they don’t understand why some government agencies have so many employees. “They’re uncovering a lot of waste and abuse there,” the worker said about DOGE. “I just can’t believe some of the stuff that they’re finding which is a total waste of taxpayer money.” Elon Musk, who leads DOGE — a Trump-created commission aimed at slashing government waste — has vowed to target a range of existing federal programs, including expired spending authorization that goes to veterans’ healthcare and NASA. “This is the reason why people voted for Trump,” the worker told ***. “Because what is the government doing? Why aren’t they forthcoming? Why? People want answers.” While the worker said they understand why some people may be annoyed to return to the office full-time, they said: “Somebody needs to put their foot down.” Another federal worker said they disagree with focusing on federal workers without better understanding the various programs and the need for federal employees to keep them going. That said, they see value in looking at where money is being spent, and they’re overall supportive of Trump. For example, the worker said they support the administration’s approach with the US Agency for International Development. Trump and Musk have both called USAID out for wastefulness and supporting liberal causes. A federal judge blocked Trump’s funding freeze on the agency and his attempt to put thousands of workers on leave. USAID spent $32.5 billion in global aid in 2024. About a quarter of the money went toward humanitarian efforts, another quarter to health and population initiatives, and additional funds were directed toward governance and administrative expenses. “I think overall we’re going to end up better off with him as a president,” they said. Some had concerns about targeting the federal workforce The 17-year federal employee said they voted for Trump thinking he would help the economy and struggling Americans. Now, the worker said they feel like the president is making things worse by putting federal workers’ livelihoods at risk. “Do Trump and Musk know the whole situation of every federal building? I don’t think they’re making proper choices,” the worker said. They added that while they agree with Trump’s goal to cut government waste, they don’t agree that cutting the federal workforce and requiring all employees to return to the office full time is an effective approach. Another federal worker who said they voted for Trump twice “had hope that he would fulfill his promises,” but that hope disappeared after the administration’s deferred resignation offers. The Office of Personnel Management offered federal employees the option to resign and receive pay through September, but this offer is now on pause due to ongoing litigation. One worker said the way they’ve gone about the federal workforce changes is a “little disconcerting.” The worker said while they understand Musk is only there for so long, it seems like they’re “getting rid of people very quickly.” The worker also has concerns about returning to work in person because they moved out of DC. The worker said it would be a financial burden to return to the office. A federal worker said they reached out to their senators and congressman and told them that “demonizing the federal workforce is not good.” They said federal workers have performance reviews, meet with supervisors, and act in compliance with their mission. “Don’t take it out on us just because of the bad behavior of the prior administration,” the worker told ***, adding that they haven’t changed their stance on supporting Trump because “it shouldn’t have come to this.” Got a tip or anything you’d like to share? 15. Tesla Owners Receiving Threats That If They Don’t Sell Their Cars, They’ll Be Vandalized Tesla Owners Receiving Threats That If They Don’t Sell Their Cars, They’ll Be Vandalized Tesla Spoil As Tesla CEO Elon Musk makes good on his promise to cut up the federal government, Tesla owners are feeling the heat. Tesla owners throughout four California cities found a series of anonymous notes left on their EVs, declaring that any vehicles not sold by February 12 will be vandalized. Some of the notes, pointedly, were wrapped around bricks. “No Nazis in America,” the notes read. “Tesla owners buy or sell by Feb 12 (Lincoln B-day) after that it is open season.” The threats appear to come from Students Against Nazi Extremism (SANE), a small direct-action group apparently organized around California State University campuses, according to reporting by Lost Coast Outpost, who received a mailed note from the group. Outpost reports that SANE’s stated goal is to “create enough shame to make it onerous for anyone to buy or operate a Tesla-branded vehicle.” Though February 12 has come and gone, police have yet to report any incidents of vandalism in SANE’s target cities — but that doesn’t mean they’re not happening elsewhere. The threats come amidst a growing international outcry against Musk’s Oval Office chauvinism, which has resulted in a wave of vandalism of Tesla vehicles and a slump in sales for the company’s EVs throughout the US and the world. But the problem with Musk goes beyond his oligarchic tendencies. The richest man in the world has swung far to the right lately, throwing his weight behind neo-Nazi accounts, performing fascist salutes, and appearing at far-right ******* rallies — fueling a growing stigma associated with those who’ve purchased his products in the past. (It’s probably worth a moment of sympathy for Tesla owners, who even just a few years ago, before Musk’s increasingly bizarre behavior started in earnest, could justifiably believe they were buying into a milquetoast vision of progressive environmentalism.) In the Netherlands last week, a Tesla showroom was hit with vandalism depicting Nazi imagery. Earlier, protestors projected an image of Musk’s dubious salute onto the Tesla Gigafactory in Germany. In the US, protestors in Colorado incurred the wrath of the FBI when they vandalized a Tesla showroom, going so far as to try to set it ablaze. Cybertrucks have likewise become easy targets for graffiti, and Tesla is apparently ramping up its efforts to protect EV charging ports from a wave of vandalism. Had Musk stuck to profiteering in the domain of business, Tesla drivers might be able to sleep a little easier. Unfortunately for them, he’s gone on a federal power bender mixed with a heavy dose of far-right rhetoric — and it looks like he’s just getting started. 19. Amazon workers reject union in vote at North Carolina warehouse Amazon workers reject union in vote at North Carolina warehouse File: The Amazon distribution center in Garner, N.C. opened in August 2020. Across four floors, the warehouse covers 2 million square feet. Scott Sharpe | Tribune News Service | Getty Images Amazon workers at a facility near Raleigh, North Carolina, overwhelmingly voted against unionizing on Saturday. Of the 3,276 ballots cast, there were 2,447 votes opposing the union and 829 in favor, according to Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE), the group seeking to represent workers. The results still need to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board. The election at the facility, named RDU1 and located in the suburb of Garner, came after organizers campaigned at the warehouse for the past three years. The facility employs roughly 4,700 workers. CAUSE said in a statement that the election results were a “result of Amazon’s willingness to break the law.” “Amazon’s relentless and ******** efforts to intimidate us prove that this company is afraid of workers coming together to claim our power,” the group said. “Amazon may think it is above the law, but we will not accept a system that allows billionaires and corporations to play by a different set of rules.” Amazon spokeswoman Eileen Hards told CNBC in a statement: “We’re glad that our team in Garner was able to have their voices heard, and that they chose to keep a direct relationship with Amazon. We look forward to continuing to make this a great place to work together, and to supporting our teammates as they build their futures with us.” Representatives the NLRB didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Amazon, the nation’s second-largest private employer, has long sought to keep unions out of its ranks. The strategy succeeded in the U.S. until 2022, when workers at a Staten Island warehouse voted to join the Amazon Labor Union. Last month, workers at a Whole Foods store in Philadelphia voted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Amazon responded to the Garner union drive with a barrage of anti-union messages in the warehouse, on a website, and sent through its AtoZ app to employees. A leader of the warehouse urged employees to “vote no,” saying a union “can get in the way of how we work together.” The company described CAUSE as an “outside party” that’s “claiming to be a union.” Amazon has previously said its employees can choose whether or not to join a union, and that it speaks “openly, candidly and respectfully about these topics” so that they can “make an informed decision.” CAUSE was founded in 2022 by RDU1 employees Mary Hill and Rev. Ryan Brown to voice concerns about the company’s response to the Covid pandemic, which they viewed as inadequate. The group sought to organize RDU1 to boost wages and secure longer breaks. Starting pay at RDU1 is $18.50 an hour. CAUSE has pushed to negotiate for wages of $30 an hour. In its statement on Saturday, CAUSE said it intended to continue organizing at RDU1 “because over half of Amazon employees are still struggling with food and housing insecurity.” Labor groups have looked beyond NLRB elections in an attempt to gain a union foothold at Amazon. They’ve assisted employees with filing unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB against Amazon, accusing the company of violating labor laws. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters helped coordinate a picket effort at nine Amazon facilities in December. Amazon said the walkout had no impact on its operations. The Teamsters union has said it represents 9,000 Amazon workers around the country, although the company has refused to recognize the union and bargain with leadership. Unions have enjoyed increasing support across the country, with 67% of Americans saying they approve of labor unions, according to Gallup. But that hasn’t translated into higher membership rates. Union membership in the private sector declined slightly to 5.9% in 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. North Carolina had the lowest union membership rate in the country last year, with only 2.4% of workers in the state represented, according to the BLS. Two Rutland High School students were provided medical attention on campus around 10:55 a.m., according to school officials. The district confirmed that a call for ambulances was made for two students, and also said no drugs were found. . “No items of this nature were found or confiscated,” BCSD spokesperson Stephanie Hartley said in an email. “The students were assessed by the school nurse and transported by ambulance for medical attention,” Hartley said. “The school was briefly placed on a precautionary lockdown to allow medical personnel easy access to the building, which is protocol for any medical support on school campuses.” “RHS parents were notified of the precautionary lockdown via Remind earlier today, and the school resumed normal operations. School dismissed at 2:20 as usual,” Hartley added. A precautionary lockdown allows for instruction to continue but limits movement inside the building. 23. People Say Their Student Loans Are Being Canceled Because Elon Musk’s DOGE Violated Their Privacy Rights. Here’s What’s Really Going On. People Say Their Student Loans Are Being Canceled Because Elon Musk’s DOGE Violated Their Privacy Rights. Here’s What’s Really Going On. If you have federal student loans and aren’t a fan of President — oops, I mean “First Buddy” — Elon Musk and the DOGE bros potentially accessing your personal data, chances are you’re seeing a lot of posts like this on social media: All over the internet, and especially on TikTok, people are advising student loan borrowers to file FERPA complaints to get their debts cleared. But since TikTok trends and accurate legal and financial advice don’t often go hand in hand, I had to learn more about what’s really going on here. In a nutshell, the argument goes that Elon Musk and DOGE accessed student loan borrower information without our consent, so people claim that we have the right under FERPA to file a complaint and get our loans wiped away. Separately, the University of California Students Association filed a federal suit to block DOGE from accessing student financial aid data, citing the Privacy Act of 1974. A judge has paused DOGE’s access to this data, but the hold is set to end on Monday. Democratic senators have also begun to take some action around this. Last week, 16 senators headed up by Senate ********* Leader Chuck Schumer started a probe into DOGE’s access to student loan data. So, does this viral student loan discharge theory hold water? Thankfully, there is someone on TikTok who has the expertise to clear things up. Jay Fleischman (@moneywiselawyer), a lawyer with 25 years of experience in consumer law, is going viral for sharing why he thinks these FERPA complaints won’t have the desired effect. In a video that’s been viewed over 2 million times as of this writing, he starts by explaining what FERPA even is. “FERPA is short for the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act, which prevents your student information from being disclosed to third parties,” Fleischman says. However, he goes on to explain that “There is no private right of action, no right for an individual to sue for violations of FERPA. The US Supreme Court actually decided the case in 2002 in a case called Gonzaga v. Doe. In that case, the US Supreme Court ruled that individuals do not have the right to sue for a violation of FERPA.” @moneywiselawyer / Department of Education / Via tiktok.com You can read the Department of Education’s page on FERPA here. He concludes the video by saying, “So if you’re going to file a lawsuit for violations of FERPA, you’re not going anywhere. You’re going to waste your time, you’re going to waste your money, you’re going to get thrown out of court because there’s no private right of action, no right for an individual to sue for a violation of FERPA.” A lot of commenters were (understandably) like, well, then, what the heck is FERPA even good for?!? So Fleischman made a follow-up video explaining exactly that. “In the case of FERPA, the right to sue for violations and the right to take enforcement actions for violations of FERPA falls to the federal government. So it would be the US Department of Education that would seek to enforce FERPA against an individual or party that violates it, or it would be the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that would seek to enforce FERPA against people who violate it.” If you’ve been paying attention to the news in the last few weeks, you unfortunately know where this is going. He concludes by saying, “Well, with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau basically shuttered, and with the Department of Education being rapidly downsized on the way to the administration trying to shutter it, there’s not going to be anybody to enforce your rights. Your consumer protection rights under FERPA do not exist in the absence of a government that is ready, willing, and able to enforce those rights on your behalf.” Next, to learn more about what borrowers should actually do right now, I spoke with Natalia Abrams, President and Founder, and Sabrina Calazans, Executive Director, at the Student Debt Crisis Center. The Student Debt Crisis Center is a nonprofit that highlights borrowers’ stories and educates borrowers about their options and rights while advocating for the ultimate goal of canceling student debt and ending the student debt crisis. First of all, they agreed that a FERPA complaint is not likely to get rid of your student loans. Abrams said, “We’ve never seen a claim where there has been debt relief or individualized relief from a FERPA claim.” She also pointed me to a recent tweet from the Office of Federal Student Aid assuring borrowers that their data has not been accessed unlawfully. Federal Student Aid / Via x.com You can read the Student Aid privacy policy, which, as of this writing, was last updated on February 12, 2025, here. Calazans chimed in, saying, “There’s a lot of misinformation spreading right now about everything related to the Department of Education. What happens if the Department of Education is dismantled or abolished? What happens to my debt? It does not go away, to our understanding. It just will pass on to either the Department of Treasury or maybe private lenders.” Al Drago / Getty Images So, what should borrowers do right now? Abrams says that the main thing is to keep on top of payments. “We don’t want people to miss a lot of payments, thinking that [their debt] is gone and then end up in a worse situation. As much as we want to find that holy grail that cancels all of the debt — we’ve long fought for that, and we got very close under the last administration — smarter folks than us in terms of attorney groups are looking into every angle they can to pull those levers.” Olivier Douliery / AFP via Getty Images Abrams went on to say, “If you’re struggling to make your payment, there are what’s called income-driven repayment programs that base your payment on your income versus the overall loan amount that can help people that are struggling to make their payment right now.” In 2023, the Biden administration introduced a new income-driven plan called the SAVE plan that set certain lower-income borrowers up for $0 monthly payments with no interest accruing. However, that plan has since been tied up in the courts with millions of borrowers still waiting to find out what will happen. Abrams explained, “You can still technically enroll in the SAVE program and then be included in that forbearance. I’d caution a bit, because that could take up to two months, and we don’t know where the status will be of the lawsuits in two months.” Calazans added that, as of now, enrolling in the SAVE program also halts progress in plans like public service student loan forgiveness, so for that reason, they recommend sticking to other income-driven plans. Calazans added another crucial step for borrowers to take right now. “We’ve also been encouraging folks to document any information that they have regarding their accounts. So they should log into studentaid.gov, and they should document what repayment plan they’re in, their servicer, and their balance. All of that information is really critical so that you know where things stand. We don’t know if the website’s going to be pulled down. We don’t know what they’re going to take off of the website. So, it is important for folks to have that information.” Frazao Studio Latino / Getty Images Finally, Abrams said, “More chaos is not the answer for student loan borrowers that have been in chaotic times for years now ever since people thought their debt was going to be canceled, and then that was held up in the courts — and then this new SAVE plan and that was held up in the court. Borrowers need clarity and to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that’s really hard when there’s so many unknowns.” The Student Debt Crisis Center has authored a letter on Action Network that you can use to urge your representatives in Congress to stand with student loan borrowers and defend the Department of Education.
