  2. Diocese of Joliet to close four churches across Chicago suburbs Diocese of Joliet to close four churches across Chicago suburbs The Brief The Diocese of Joliet announced it will close four of its churches later this year. The closures are the latest step in the diocese’s process of “targeted restructuring.” Several other parishes will amalgamate, or essentially combine, later this summer as well. CREST HILL, Ill. – The Diocese of Joliet announced it will close four of its churches and essentially combine several others as a part of its “targeted restructuring” amid declining mass attendance and donations. Bishop Ronald Hicks made the announcement last week which came as a result of months of work by a committee of clergy and laypeople to determine how the diocese should restructure. The Diocese of Joliet was established in 1948 and serves more than 500,000 Catholics across DuPage, Kankakee, Will, Grundy, Ford, Iroquois, and Kendall counties. The data is accurate as of 2021, according to the diocese website. Church closures this summer What we know Four parishes in DuPage, Grundy and Will counties will close effective July 1, Hicks said. One chapel will also close. They include: These closure announcements are part of the third phase of the diocese’s restructuring process, which began last year. Diocese officials underwent an 11-month “listening, review and discussion process,” Hicks said. The committee made recommendations to Hicks for his approval. Multiple parishes will amalgamate, or one parish will join an existing parish. Two parishes, St. Paul the Apostle in Peotone and Christ the Servant in Woodridge, will continue to operate as independent parishes. These changes will also take effect on July 1. “While I’m confident we are doing the right things and making sound decisions to make our diocese and our church stronger and able to thrive, I also appreciate and understand that if these outcomes directly affect you, or where you may worship, these actions may be difficult changes for you,” Hicks said. “And cause great hurt, sadness, and grieving.” Previous efforts to close other parishes have been met with pushback from church members. The bishop discussed the announcements at length in a video posted to the Diocese of Joliet YouTube channel. ‘Pruning’ of the diocese The backstory The closures are just the latest step in a process that began in 2021 to “prune” the diocese, a reference to a passage from the Gospel of St. John when Jesus tells his disciples that branches must be pruned from the vine to bear more fruit. The diocese explained on its website that, like other Catholic diocese across the U.S., the process of consolidating and downsizing came about due to an aging priest population and a decline in Mass attendance and donations. The population of those identifying as Catholic has been on the decline for years and more people are identifying as “nones,” or those claiming no religious affiliation. The diocese also cited increased costs for building maintenance at its aging churches and schools. Catholic school enrollment is also on the decline, made worse by a nationwide teacher shortage. 4. Mum’s 20-year fight for epilepsy drug compensation Mum’s 20-year fight for epilepsy drug compensation Peter Saull Political editor, BBC East Midlands BBC Matthew Cox was born with a range of conditions, his mother said “Who will look after our children when we’re no longer here? At the moment that’s nobody.” Catherine Cox, from Keyworth in Nottinghamshire, was one of thousands of women who took the epilepsy drug, sodium valproate, while pregnant, something which is now advised against. Her son Matthew, now 23, was born with a range of conditions, including autism, ADHD, epilepsy and several learning disabilities. At the age of 18 months, he was diagnosed with foetal valproate syndrome, indicating the medication his mother took was the cause of his problems. Mrs Cox has been campaigning for compensation ever since. Mr Cox says he continues to struggle day to day It is thought thousands of children in the *** have been left with disabilities caused by valproate since the 1970s. Instructions for doctors – and, more recently, patient leaflets – say valproate should not be used during pregnancy unless there is no safer alternative and only after a careful discussion of the risks. Before undergoing fertility treatment, Mrs Cox was advised it was “fine” to continue taking valproate. “To then find out that the medication that you have taken in good faith has caused the problems your child will carry for the whole of their life is an awful thing,” she told the BBC. Mr Cox has a job at a local bakery but relies heavily on his mother. “It can be a struggle at times,” he said. “I do worry at times but I also worry about my mum. Obviously I love my mum.” Mrs Cox told the BBC she had grown weary of a lack of action from successive governments. “We’re not getting any younger. I started this when I was 31 – I’m 53 this year,” she said. “I honestly think that the government want the parents to expire, because the children will not be able to fight for the redress that they need.” Since 2016, valproate pill packets have warned the medication can seriously harm unborn babies In February 2024, a report by the Patient Safety Commissioner, Henrietta Hughes, said there was a “clear” and “urgent” need to compensate those harmed by valproate, both financially and otherwise. Dr Hughes made a series of recommendations, including a specific housing grant for valproate victims, a removal of the barriers many face in getting their special educational needs recognised, and work to issue an apology to each individual affected. More than a year has since passed, and the government is still working on a response. Mrs Cox said: “We have pulled various governments over time kicking and screaming to this point where they have acknowledged that the difficulties for up to 20,000 children were caused by this drug. “As we go on, what we need is something to make up for their loss of potential.” “As a society we are judged by how we treat our most vulnerable,” said Mrs Cox The delays were recently raised at Prime Minister’s Questions by Mrs Cox’s MP, Labour’s James Naish, who represents Rushcliffe. Sir Keir Starmer responded it was “obviously a really important matter”. “We will provide an update on the Patient Safety Commissioner’s report at the earliest opportunity to the House,” the prime minister added. Naish said: “We’re all working hard. The government has a huge amount on its plate. It’s already dealt with big scandals such as the infected blood scandal. “We just want to make sure that this is one of those issues as well.” Despite two decades of setbacks, Mrs Cox is hoping she will hear some positive news soon. “The Labour government were really, really supportive in opposition. Let’s see them stand by their word,” she said. “As a society we are judged by how we treat our most vulnerable and the children affected by valproate are our most vulnerable. They need that help going forward.” Source link #Mums #20year #fight #epilepsy #drug #compensation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  8. ‘Fake bailiffs said they’d take my furniture’ ‘Fake bailiffs said they’d take my furniture’ Shari Vahl Reporter, You and Yours BBC Paul was told bailiffs were chasing an advertising debt A man has described how criminals pretending to be bailiffs almost tricked him into paying thousands of pounds to settle a fictitious debt as part of an elaborate scam. In what has been reported as a growing problem, people are phoned up and told bailiffs are on the way to their home to remove their possessions and that the only way to call them off is to settle the debt with a local court. A convincing fake of the court’s phone service then tries to take payment with the criminals hoping the panic of the approaching bailiffs will persuade them to part with their cash. Paul, from Northumberland, told BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours it started with a phone call out of the blue. ‘Astonished and terrified’ “I answered the call and he then proceeded to say he was a bailiff and he was ringing because there’d been a county court judgment against me the previous summer in Worcester Crown Court and I owed £2,950 plus his fee of £970,” he said. He was then told: “‘The boys and I are going to come round later today to collect furniture from your house to the value of the finding.'” The man on the phone told Paul, who rents out holiday cottages on his farm, the debt related to unpaid social media marketing fees. “I was astonished and terrified, actually, at the same time,” he said. The man gave Paul a number to contact the court for details. Although the number was bogus, Paul encountered the court’s genuine automated switchboard message – which the criminals had duplicated to make the scam more convincing. When he was put through to someone, Paul was told he had unpaid “marketing expenses”. He then received what looked like genuine court documents by email – which have been shared with the BBC – detailing the debts that had apparently built up. Paul was emailed what was claimed to be official court documents Paul was asked to transfer the money to the personal bank account of a “court appointed adviser” who was working as a freelancer. “At this point, alarm bells were ringing loud and clear,” he said. Paul then searched online for the correct contact number for the court, and realised the one he had been given was wrong, just as another email asking for payment arrived, from an unlikely-looking dot com email address. “All the way through all of this, I keep having phone calls from the alleged bailiff wanting me to tell him that I had sent the money,” he said. “He said not until the money has been sent will he call off the action of the guys with the fists who would come around and steal all my furniture.” ‘Panic mode’ Victoria, who lives in Cheshire, was also targeted with the scam. When her phone rang, she was told the “enforcement officers” were 40 minutes away and were coming to remove items from her home. “I kind of went into panic mode,” she said. The man told her he couldn’t discuss details over the phone, but would give her the details of Chester County Court who she could call for an explanation. “I was on the phone for ages,” said Victoria. “I couldn’t get through. So because I couldn’t get through and the bailiff was on the way, I was panicking even more.” She said she was able to get through to another man, also a scammer, who told her she had built up debt through Google advertising – and because she remembered speaking to Google several years ago, this seemed plausible. Victoria, who works for a ******** business, had never actually bought Google advertising, but the man told her she had used a free trial and failed to cancel it. Victoria was told she should have appeared in court and that there was a warrant out for her arrest. “I just wanted to send the money over there and then,” she said. “As I was on my computer setting it up another bailiff rang me and he was on his way and he was the ****** bailiff, he was the horrible bailiff. “He was just saying that he was now 10 minutes away and he was coming to clear the property and to get the bank transfer done as soon as possible.” As she set up the payment on her online banking, her husband had searched online for the correct number for the court and called it – but was number 30 in the ******. “He was walking out the room saying he would never speak to me again if I sent the money,” she said. “And I just wanted to stop the bailiffs.” A warning on Victoria’s online bank that the details she’d been given were for a personal – not a business – account sowed the first seeds of doubt in her mind – just as her husband got through to the genuine court who told them not to pay. ‘Tip of the iceberg’ It was a near miss for both Paul and Victoria. “They sort of almost had me,” said Paul. “You go into a mode of shock where you’re not really thinking terribly clearly. “And also there was sufficient plausibility in some of it because they claimed that I’d failed to pay marketing expenses for the holiday cottage business that I do actually run. And they’d rung me on my mobile number and they knew my name. “There were a few question marks where it felt as though it could have been real – sufficient to make me terrified…” The Ministry of Justice said it was a criminal offence to impersonate a bailiff, and that anyone receiving a similar call should hang up and find the correct number for the court. Sarah Naylor, from the trade body for bailiffs, the Civil Enforcement Association, said there had been an increase in the number of reports her organisation received about these tactics, and that these were likely to be the tip of the iceberg as few victims would think to notify genuine bailiffs after being scammed. “These scam companies work on the basis of urgency and fear,” she said. Genuine enforcement officers will always reschedule and allow people time to check details, she said, and would never only offer one payment option. “Take a breath and reflect,” she advised anyone receiving a similar call. “Does this seem right? Is this the first you’ve heard about it? Does it seem suspicious? Keep calm and understand more about the debt and if that individual isn’t helping you with that, then it’s very likely that they’re not a legitimate enforcement agent.” Fake Bailiffs, Heat Pump Tourism and Supermarket Loyalty Cards Source link #Fake #bailiffs #theyd #furniture Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Slimmed down Lendlease posts first profit in two years Slimmed down Lendlease posts first profit in two years Lendlease has posted its first statutory profit in two years as the property developer slims down, shedding thousands of roles and abandoning its international ambitions. The company announced on Monday it had made a statutory profit of $48 million in the six months to December 31, compared with a $136 million loss in the same time a year ago. Lendlease posted a half-year operating profit of $122 million, from a $11 million loss a year ago. “Our results for 1H25 reflect significant progress in-line with our strategy announced last year, as well as a return to statutory profit,” said chief executive Tony Lombardo, referring to a plan to abandon barely profitable overseas projects, pay off debt and eventually return billions to shareholders. “We continue to move at pace to simplify the group and focus on improving our operational performance.” Lendlease said it had already completed $1.9 billion in overseas asset sales, and had a number of other transactions under negotiation. It is on target to reduce its full-time staff by 4000 by the end of this year. Lendlease completed its three One Sydney Harbour residential skyscrapers in Barangaroo during the half, and says its One Circular Quay 58-level building is 77 per cent pre-sold by value. It has also signed an agreement in principle to build a “large luxury residential development” that is expected to be announced in the second half. Lendlease said it would pay an interim distribution of six cents per share, down from 6.5 cents per share a year ago. Lendlease shares were changing hands at $6.65 on Monday morning, down 1.3 per cent from Friday’s close. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Japan’s economic expansion in the fourth quarter beat analysts’ expectations for quarter-on-quarter and annualized growth, preliminary government data showed Monday. GDP grew 0.7% quarter on quarter, more than the 0.3% rise expected by economists polled by Reuters. It had expanded by a revised 0.4% in the previous quarter. On an annualized basis, GDP grew 2.8%, exceeding the Reuters estimate of 1%. The GDP data on Monday comes against the backdrop of Japan’s central bank raising rates to 0.5%, their highest level since October 2008, and offers it more room to stick with monetary tightening. Japan’s household spending in December also supported the case for monetary tightening, rising 2.7% year on year in real terms, massively beating expectations from economists polled by Reuters and marking its first rise since July 2024. 14. The Biggest Broccoli Recalls In History The Biggest Broccoli Recalls In History Broccoli is a versatile vegetable that can be used in everything from a delicious stir-fry to a ******* soup. This crunchy, crisp cruciferous veggie is jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that make it a conscious addition to many meals. From adding it to your breakfast in an omelet to pairing it with your favorite protein as a side for dinner, the options for incorporating more broccoli into your diet truly are endless. But unfortunately, this beloved type of produce is also susceptible to contamination with a bacteria that causes food-borne illness: Listeria monocytogenes. Over the years, exposure to this ****** bug has polluted multiple different broccoli products, resulting in everything from small, voluntary recalls to country-wide Class I recalls initiated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We take a look at some of the biggest broccoli recalls in history and discover what steps were taken to prevent any disastrous outcomes as a result of the contamination. Read more: 11 Store-Bought Italian Dressing Brands, Ranked Worst To Best Braga Fresh Marketside Broccoli Florets (2024-2025) Bag of cut broccoli florets – Braga Fresh In late December 2024, Braga Fresh — a California-based shipper and retailer of fresh veggies and salads — issued a precautionary advisory for their Marketside Broccoli Florets. The advisory was for just one production lot of the washed and ready-to-eat packaged broccoli, and only for packages with a “best if used by date” of December 10, 2024. Braga Fresh issued the advisory after the company learned the broccoli had been potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause a myriad of symptoms ranging from fever and aches to intestinal upset. Contaminated packages potentially tainted by the bacteria were sold at Walmart locations in 20 states across the country, including Oregon, Washington, and California. After the initial precautionary advisory was issued, the Food and Drug Administration issued an official recall in December 2024, and then took it a step further by upgrading the recall to a Class 1 in January 2025. This type of recall signifies that there is “a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” Though no illnesses had been reported as of early February 2025, consumers were advised to immediately discard or return any potentially contaminated broccoli to avoid extreme consequences. Trader Joe’s Unexpected Broccoli Cheddar Soup (2023) Trader Joe’s broccoli cheddar soup – traderjoeslist / Instagram Trader Joe’s is beloved by its dedicated shoppers for its delicious ready-made meals that are fast, easy, and nutritious. But one of these fan-favorite products posed a potential health risk to consumers in the summer of 2023 (and was only one of several recalls on TJ’s cult favorites). The grocery chain issued a voluntary recall of its Unexpected Broccoli Cheddar Soup on July 27, 2023, after one of its suppliers — Winter Gardens Quality Foods, Inc. — discovered the broccoli in the soup may contain insects. The voluntary recall affected 10,889 cases of soup with 12 of the 20-ounce containers per case; that’s a whopping 130,668 containers. The recall impacted Trader Joe’s locations in seven states — Florida, Illinois, California, Texas, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut — and soup with use-by dates between July 18 and September 15, 2023.Though no one got sick from the contaminated soup, Trader Joe’s recommended that all containers from the identified lots be discarded immediately to be on the safe side. Conagra Brands Birds Eye Broccoli Tots (2022) Birds Eye broccoli tots package – Walmart Imagine taking a bite of your favorite beloved broccoli tots, only to crunch down on small rocks or metal fragments. This unlikely scenario became a reality for two consumers in August 2022 when they discovered small rocks and metal fragments in their Birds Eye Broccoli Tots, leading to dental damage. The company issued a recall of four lots of this delicious broccoli snack with a mix of best-by dates in August and November of the same year. After the voluntary recall, stores removed all of the potentially harmful 12-ounce packages from their shelves, and the FDA recommended consumers do the same. Made from a mix of broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, onions, and different spices and binders, it wasn’t identified which ingredient specifically was the possible culprit in these frozen morsels. But given that the broccoli tots are no longer listed on the Birds Eye website and are out of stock at many online retailers, it seems that the recall may have had a lasting impact. Stop & Shop Frozen Broccoli Cuts (2020) Bag of frozen broccoli florets – Stop & Shop In spring 2020, inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection raised the alarm after finding Listeria monocytogenes in Stop & Shop’s Private Brand Frozen Broccoli Cuts. This harmful bacteria leads to listerosis, a food-borne illness that leads to fever, chills, and headache. It’s especially risky in pregnant people, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, making any potential contamination extremely high risk. Though the contaminated bag was found in South Windsor, Connecticut, the brand recalled broccoli from over 400 stores across four states — New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The grocery giant asked that all consumers toss or return any bags of broccoli with a sell-by date of March 15, 2020 to avoid any food-borne diseases. Luckily, no illnesses were ever reported. The grocery giant is no stranger to recalls. After the broccoli recall, Stop & Shop was also subject to recalls on cooked shrimp in 2021, breaded chicken cutlets in July 2024, and frozen waffles later the same year. Meijer Vegetable Trays (2019) Mixed vegetable tray with dip – Meijer In late summer 2019, grocery chain Meijer announced a voluntary recall of two items: vegetable trays and broccoli used in their salad bars. The produce was potentially contaminated by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, known to cause sever gastrointestinal distress and ****** flu-like symptoms. The vegetable tray recall impacted Meijer stores in six states across the midwest, and the salad bar broccoli recall was specifically for two stores in the Grand Rapids, Michigan region. Though no illnesses were reported, consumers were urged to return or throw out any items with sell-by dates in a specific date range from September to November 2019. Several other recalls have also plagued the grocery chain over the years. This broccoli recall in 2019 was close on the heels of a similar Meijer fresh vegetable recall in fall 2017. The previous recall impacted not only the vegetable trays but also a range of produce including broccoli, cauliflower, squash, asparagus, and brussel sprouts. Butterfield Foods Broccoli Salad Kit (2016) Salad with broccoli florets – 5PH/Shutterstock In June 2016, Butterfield Foods was alerted to a major problem: the sunflower seeds used in their broccoli salad kit dressing was possibly contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The resulting recall impacted nearly 16,000 pounds of their broccoli salad kits from various dates between November of 2015 and May of 2016. No illnesses as a result of the contamination, however, were ever confirmed. Based in Indiana, this private-label food production company makes a range of products that are then distributed to restaurants, grocery chains, and convenience stores. And despite their commitment to quality, they were also subject to a massive recall on nearly 300,000 pounds of barbecue beef, pork and chicken products in 2011 due to the possible presence of an unstated soy allergen prior to the broccoli salad kit recall in 2016. These two incidents, however, seem to be the only recalls on Butterfield Foods’ otherwise spotless record. Wylwood Frozen Fresh Broccoli Cuts (2016) Bowl of frozen broccoli – KOHUKU/Shutterstock 1,800 cases of Wylwood Frozen Fresh Broccoli Cuts — produced by Congelados Co. — were recalled in spring 2016 due to a common contamination culprit: Listeria monocytogenes. Responsible for a range of symptoms from flu-like ailments to intestinal distress, Listeria can even survive refrigeration and freezing. Because it’s so adaptable, no food — even brozen broccoli — is safe once exposed to this pesky bacteria. The Ohio Department of Agriculture identified the bacteria in a routine test, causing the voluntary recall to be set in motion. Because the frozen broccoli was shipped across the country to nearly a dozen states, including Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, and Indiana, it resulted in a widespread recall of the tainted veggie. Consumers were advised to toss any one-pound bags featuring a single UPC code in the trash to avoid potential exposure to unwanted food-borne illness. Luckily, no illnesses were identified in connection to this particular product. Taylor Farms Inc. Broccoli Salad Kits (2013) Broccoli salad on a plate – Taylor Farms In fall 2013, a different broccoli salad kit was the source of possible contamination. This Taylor Farms product included salad dressing that may have been compromised with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can make even healthy people extremely ill — and is especially dangerous for those who are immunocompromised. Based in both Texas and Maryland, Taylor Farms had shipped the salad kits across the country to Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia, recalling bags of the salad kit from all seven states. While making a broccoli salad with a pre-prepared kit is a fast and easy option, it’s also equally delicious when made from scratch if you’re looking for a way to vet all of the ingredients before consuming Though no illnesses were linked to this case of contamination, Taylor Farms has unfortunately been the subject of multiple recalls in the years since. In 2018, the brand recalled a pork carnitas bowl featuring tomatillos possibly exposed to both salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. In 2024, they recalled another salad kit; this time, nearly 20,000 pounds of apple walnut chicken salad bowls were flagged because of an undeclared wheat allergen. Australia’s Perpetual confirms fresh bid from KKR Australia’s Perpetual confirms fresh bid from KKR (Reuters) -Australia’s Perpetual Ltd on Monday confirmed it received an indicative buyout offer from KKR & Co but said the latest revised proposal and its value were not accurately described in recent media reports. A A$2.2 billion ($1.40 billion) deal with the buyout giant has been on the back burner over the past two months after Perpetual received a much higher-than-expected tax bill, along with higher liabilities and lower shareholder returns. However, Perpetual said in a statement that the “latest revised proposal and its quantum are not accurately described in the media.” Perpetual said that the revised proposal includes key commercial terms that need to be finalised and added “the net proceeds shareholders would receive under the Revised Proposal are uncertain at this stage”. 19. Swede Aberg storms home to win Genesis Invitational Swede Aberg storms home to win Genesis Invitational Ludvig Aberg has produced a brilliant finish to win his second PGA Tour title. Aberg birdied four of the last six holes in the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines to complete a final round of 66 and finish 12 under par, one shot ahead of American Maverick McNealy. The 25-year-old Swede who turned pro in June 2023 after an outstanding amateur career won the RSM Classic that year, then finished second three times in 2024, including at the Masters. The Genesis relocated to Torrey from Riviera because of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, and Aberg made good on another chance at one of his favourite courses. McNealy had set the clubhouse target following a closing 64 but ultimately paid the price for covering the last five holes in one over. The 29-year-old had to hole from 38 feet to save par on the first, but birdied the next five holes in a row and picked up another shot on the ninth to reach the turn in 30. Further birdies on the 10th, 11th and 13th briefly gave McNealy a three-shot lead before he dropped his only shot of the day on the 14th after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker. Aberg, who had covered the front nine in 34, still need a strong finish to force himself into contention and duly birdied the 13th, 14th and 15th before two-putting from 70 feet for birdie on the par-five 18th. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot a 76 on Saturday to fall into a tie for eighth, was 10 shots better on Sunday and finished at nine under, tied for third with third-round leader Patrick Rodgers (71). Adam Scott (70) finished as the best *********** in a tie for 37th at one over, while compatriots Min Woo Lee (70) and Jason Day (72) were four and six over, respectively. With Reuters & AAP. 20. Is Cava a Buy, Sell, or Hold in 2025? Is Cava a Buy, Sell, or Hold in 2025? The S&P 500 has risen about 20% over the past 12 months, which is a very strong performance. Cava Group’s (NYSE: CAVA) stock price has rallied 160% over the same span. There’s a lot to digest about that eye-popping share price advance when you consider the buy, sell, or hold call on this upstart restaurant concept. Let’s start with the good news: Cava is a Mediterranean-themed restaurant that uses an assembly line-style preparation system. It cooks the food in a kitchen behind the counter, so customers know it is freshly made. And the assembly line allows customers to fine-tune their choice to their specific taste preferences. This is, basically, what Chipotle ******** Grill does, too, only with a ******** theme. Chipotle has grown massively over the years and, despite some recent price weakness, has been a huge winner for investors. CMG data by YCharts To put a number on that, Chipotle’s shares have risen 340% over the past decade, while the S&P 500 index has risen around 190%. Investors are betting that Cava is the next Chipotle. And there’s good reason to think that, given that Cava only operated around 350 restaurants at the end of the third quarter of 2024. Chipotle operates more than 3,700 restaurants. If Cava’s concept remains attractive to consumers, there could be a huge growth opportunity ahead. With same-store sales of 18% in the third quarter of 2024, the concept does, indeed, appear to be very hot right now. So the reason to buy Cava is that you believe it can continue to expand aggressively, perhaps achieving similar long-term results to Chipotle. The problem here is that investors are already pricing a lot of good news into Cava’s stock price. That massive price advance over the past 12 months is the first indication of this fact, but there’s also the price-to-earnings ratio. Chipotle has a P/E of roughly 50x. That’s very high, but it actually pales in comparison to Cava’s over 300x P/E ratio. For comparison, the S&P 500’s average P/E is 23. It is entirely possible that Cava will continue to grow its business at a breakneck pace. But even the slightest sign of weakness could lead investors to dump the stock, given the lofty valuation. In fact, the company could continue to perform strongly, and the stock could still fall if momentum-driven investors decide to move on to another story stock. If valuation matters to you, you won’t want to buy Cava. And if you own it, you might want to consider taking some profits. It is unusual for stocks to have P/Es as high as Cava’s for long periods of time, with stock price declines a frequent reason for the P/E falling back to lower levels. Story Continues That said, if you own Cava, it might be hard to justify selling it. While the stock is expensive, the opportunity remains robust. And management is executing very well right now, aggressively opening new locations while, at the same time, keeping sales at existing locations high. If the restaurant chain can continue to resonate with customers, there’s no reason to believe it won’t grow into that lofty P/E ratio. If you decide to stick it out, however, make sure to track same-store sales closely. It is unlikely that Cava will be able to sustain 18% forever. But even if it can manage to achieve half that level, it will be a standout performance in an industry where low single digits are considered a solid outcome. The big takeaway, however, is that you may need to react quickly if the story changes, given the good news that investors have already priced into the shares. CMG data by YCharts Or you could just hold on and not do anything. As the chart shows, Chipotle has suffered through a few massive drawdowns even as it has helped investors build wealth over the long term. It would have taken an iron stomach to sit through multiple 50%-plus stock price declines, but such drops aren’t uncommon when you are looking at young, fast-growing companies. To stick it out with Cava through this kind of volatility, however, you’ll want to make sure you really (really!) believe in the strength of its food concept. Value investors won’t like Cava, given its lofty valuation. Income investors won’t like Cava since it doesn’t pay a dividend. Growth investors are the group that may like this stock. But even then, there’s the valuation to contend with, which is extreme by just about any measure. So really, Cava is most appropriate for aggressive growth investors. And even then there’s a bit of buyer beware, since the market is clearly highly enthusiastic about the stock today. Share price turbulence is highly likely. 23. Khadija Shaw: Man City striker makes ****** power salute after facing racism Khadija Shaw: Man City striker makes ****** power salute after facing racism Shaw is one of the most high profile ****** female footballers in the world, and in the WSL there is no active striker who can touch her. She has scored 11 league goals this season, three more than second-highest scorer Alessia Russo, despite playing two matches fewer. City’s player of the year in each of the last two seasons, Shaw has scored 88 goals in just 102 appearances for the club. She is loved and respected at City, with the stadium announcer emphasising she was “our number 21” following both goals for the fourth-placed side. “It was incredible,” team-mate Lauren Hemp told Sky Sports. “Bunny has been through a lot recently so it’s great for her and it’s great for us to see her back scoring goals like she always has done.” It is in games like this one against Liverpool where her quality shines brightest. With plenty of chances at both ends missed, Shaw had two half-opportunities and took both. The first saw her control and turn in half a yard of space before firing across the keeper. For the second she controlled a cross at waist height before swivelling and netting with a half-volley, “It could have been 6-4 tonight in chances,” Liverpool manager Matt Beard said afterwards. “The difference tonight was Bunny Shaw.” As women’s football continues to grow, abuse such as that suffered by Shaw may only become more prevalent. Fans of the WSL must hope she continues to ply her trade in England. On her best days, such as this one, Shaw is a remarkable athlete – physically imposing while carrying one of the best touches and finishing ability in the modern game. “Man City needed the moment, they needed the big-game player,” former Sheffield United forward Courtney Sweetman-Kirk told Sky Sports. “That’s how you prove a point to people.” Source link #Khadija #Shaw #Man #City #striker #****** #power #salute #facing #racism Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  25. Nutritionists And Dietitians Reveal The One “Healthy” Food That Could Be Harming You As You Age Nutritionists And Dietitians Reveal The One “Healthy” Food That Could Be Harming You As You Age As we age, our dietary needs (and needs overall) start to change. We need more of some nutrients and less of others, we may need to scale back on intense exercise routines, and we often start to introduce new medications to manage specific health conditions. But back to food: With the ever-changing state of our bodies and health, it can be hard to know how to properly nourish ourselves at different life stages. But there’s one food registered dietitians say you should be extra careful about eating as you get older — and we’re going to guess you didn’t see this one coming. According to three different registered dietitians we spoke with, there’s one food people need to be cautious about consuming as they get older: grapefruit. If your jaw is on the floor, we don’t blame you. Grapefruit is packed with vitamin C and is great for you, right? Normally, yes. But for anyone taking medication to manage a health issue, grapefruit may interact negatively with it. “Grapefruit and grapefruit juice are known to interfere with statins, which are used to reduce cholesterol,” said Sarah Hormachea, a registered dietitian at Nourish. “A compound in grapefruit called furanocoumarins competes with the enzyme in our liver that is used to metabolize statin medications.” The exact amount of grapefruit that’s dangerous to ingest will vary based on a handful of factors, and you should always talk to your doctor about the amount that’s safe for you (if any). But in general, one whole grapefruit or glass of grapefruit juice is enough to negatively interact with certain types of medication. Maria Emerick, another registered dietitian, adds that grapefruit can also interact negatively with blood thinners like warfarin, which is often known by the brand name Coumadin. “This can lead to higher levels of the medication in the body, increasing the risk of side effects or toxicity,” she said. Statins and blood thinners aren’t the only types of medications that grapefruit might interact negatively with. Research shows grapefruit could have an impact on certain blood pressure medications, heart rhythm medications, certain mood medications (although it’s worth noting that it’s safe to consume grapefruit with most common antidepressants) and more. Be careful of foods high in vitamin K, too. haoliang via Getty Images But it’s not just grapefruit you need to be wary of. Foods high in vitamin K that you probably think of as good for you — like kale, spinach and collard greens — can be dangerous when you consume too much of them while taking certain medications. “Foods rich in vitamin K can interfere with the effectiveness of blood thinners like warfarin. Vitamin K helps blood clot, which counteracts the blood-thinning effects of warfarin. Individuals on warfarin need to maintain consistent vitamin K intake daily and monitor their diet accordingly,” Emerick said. Most doctors won’t encourage you to avoid vitamin K altogether (although you should always check with them!). The most important thing to keep in mind with vitamin K and certain medications is consistency in dosage. For example, the daily recommendation for men and women over 19 is 120 mcg and 90 mcg respectively, and a cup of raw spinach has 145 mcg and a cup of cooked broccoli has roughly 220 mcg. So if you have a cup of raw spinach one day (mixed into a salad, for example), make sure to try to keep that level consistent with whatever vitamin K-rich greens you consume the next day. Shelley ******, a registered dietitian and nutritionist for Consumer Health Digest, adds a few additional drugs to the list. “These can include antacids, antibiotics, aspirin and drugs for *******, seizures and high cholesterol,” she said. “If you are taking any of those drugs you may want to limit or avoid vitamin K-rich foods [under the guidance of a doctor]. Sometimes you can still include foods high in vitamin K in your diet but focus on getting approximately the same amount each day so you can stabilize your medication dosage required to manage your condition, while still enjoying dark greens in your diet.” What if you’re not on any medication? Skynesher / Getty Images If you’re on little or no medication, you may be wondering what foods you should try to eat less of. The answer to that probably isn’t as surprising — and by the way, these foods (and drinks) are on the list for people who are on medication, too. “You’ll definitely want to try to drink less alcohol,” Hormachea said. “As we age, our body’s ability to digest alcohol can change dramatically. Liver function declines, leading to a slower metabolism of alcohol.” This can result in alcohol staying in the system for longer, she added, with a more pronounced and prolonged effect. “Decreased production of enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism (like ADH and ALDH) can put older adults at a higher risk of alcohol-related toxicity. Many medications used by older adults are also contraindicated for alcohol consumption.” You should also work to limit your consumption of processed foods, such as fast food, ready-made meals, packaged snacks and sugar-sweetened beverages, Emerick said. “These products are manufactured from chemically altered ingredients derived from foods and supplemented with additives to improve taste, texture, appearance, and shelf life, with minimal to no inclusion of whole foods,” she said. “Research indicates a direct link between ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and increased risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, depression, obesity, poor sleep quality, and overall mortality.” Moreover, Emerick added, UPFs often replace more nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds in diets, leading to lower consumption of beneficial vitamins, minerals, fiber, probiotics, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. “As it is typical for appetite to diminish with age, every mouthful becomes increasingly important,” she said. While the advice to limit alcohol and UPFs is pretty standard, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor about what foods any medications you’re taking may interact with. They’ll have the most information on this topic, and may also have suggestions for how to meet nutritional needs while steering clear of certain nutrient-dense foods like grapefruit or spinach. In the meantime, you should probably skip that second glass of wine tonight! This article originally appeared on HuffPost.
