Jack Ma and Other ******** Business Leaders Meet With Xi Jinping
Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, met on Monday with a group of corporate chieftains, including the entrepreneur Jack Ma, who was sidelined by the government four years ago, in a show of support for private business at an economically precarious time.
The heads of the electronics companies Huawei and Xiaomi, the battery maker CATL and the electric vehicle giant BYD were among the business leaders who applauded and took notes as Mr. Xi presided over the meeting, according to a video published by state media. The reports did not describe the nature of the discussions or list everyone who attended.
It was the first gathering between Mr. Xi and corporate leaders since President Trump targeted China in a series of tariffs, which he said were aimed at reducing the enormous American trade deficit with the country.
Among investors, reports that the meeting might take place had sparked optimism that Beijing was getting serious about bolstering the private sector, which has taken a back seat as Mr. Xi has put greater emphasis on state-owned enterprises.
Stocks in Hong Kong, where many major ******** companies trade, have risen in recent weeks on optimism about private companies like DeepSeek, a ******** start-up that said it had built a powerful artificial intelligence program using far fewer computer chips than any Silicon Valley giant in the field. Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, was at the meeting on Monday, according to ******** media.
Fred Hu, founder of the investment firm Primavera Capital in Hong Kong, called the meeting a symbolic “course correction.”
“In recent years the private sector has been hit by policies, politics and regulations,” Mr. Hu said.
The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong initially rallied more than 1 percent on Monday, but it gave up those gains and was trading lower in the afternoon.
******** social media was bursting with speculation about who had been at the meeting. The symposium quickly became one of the top five topics of discussion on Weibo, one of the most popular online platforms in China.
For many, the most important question ahead of the meeting was whether Mr. Ma, the Alibaba Group founder, would be in attendance.
It was the first time Mr. Ma had been seen in public with Mr. Xi since Beijing slammed the brakes on the initial public offering of his Ant Group in 2020, after he publicly criticized ******** regulators for stifling innovation. The move by regulators to stop what would have been the world’s biggest I.P.O. was a key development in a multiyear government crackdown on ******** entrepreneurs. Mr. Ma has kept largely out of the public eye since then.
Mr. Hu said that Mr. Ma’s presence at the meeting sent a message “that successful private entrepreneurs will be respected rather than penalized.”

DeepSeek ramps up China-U.S. competition but won’t hurt OpenAI
DeepSeek ramps up China-U.S. competition but won’t hurt OpenAI
Tech bosses largely agree the risk DeepSeek poses to OpenAI remains limited for now.
Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images
The technological advances that ******** artificial intelligence lab DeepSeek have displayed show the game is on when it comes to U.S.-Sino competition on AI, top tech executives told CNBC.
In a series of interviews at France’s Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, leaders of several major tech companies told CNBC that the emergence of DeepSeek demonstrates that China can’t be counted out as a serious player when it comes to AI innovation.
Last month, DeepSeek shocked global markets with a technical paper saying that one of its new AI models was created with a total training cost of less than $6 million — far less than the billions upon billions of dollars being spent by Big Tech players and Western AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Chris Lehane, chief global affairs officer at OpenAI, told CNBC that DeepSeek’s advanced, low-cost model confirms there is a “very real competition between U.S.-led, small D democratic AI and CCP [******** ********** Party] China-led autocratic, authoritarian AI.”
Many critics of DeepSeek have pointed to apparent censorship by the model when it comes to sensitive topics. For example, when asked about the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, DeepSeek’s AI assistant app responds with: “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.”
“There’s two countries in the world that can build this at scale,” Lehane told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal on the sidelines of the Paris AI summit Monday. “Imagine if there were only two countries in the world that could build electricity at scale. That’s sort of how you have to think about it.”
“For us, what DeepSeek really reinforces and reaffirms is that there is this very real competition with very real stakes,” Lehane added.
Still, tech bosses largely agreed that even though DeepSeek’s breakthrough shows China being further along in the global AI race than previously thought, the threat it poses to OpenAI remains limited for now.
‘The game is on’
DeepSeek says that its new R1 model, an open-source reasoning model, was able to rival the performance of OpenAI’s own similar o1 model — only using a cheaper, less energy-intensive process.
That led experts to question the prevailing wisdom in the West of the last several years, which is that China is behind the U.S. on AI development because of export restrictions that make it harder for firms in the country to get their hands on more advanced Nvidia graphics processing units, or GPUs.
GPUs are necessary for training and running AI applications because they excel at parallel processing, meaning they can perform multiple calculations simultaneously.
Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn and partner at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners, told CNBC Monday that DeepSeek’s new model is “a big deal in showing that the game is on.”
“The competition is afoot with China,” Hoffman said, adding that DeepSeek’s R1 is “a credible, actionable model.”
Abishur Prakash, founder of strategic advisory firm The Geopolitical Business, told CNBC that DeepSeek shows the West’s understanding of China remains limited.
“America’s assumed place as the technological captain of the world is no longer the acceptable belief,” Prakash told CNBC in a phone interview.
“That is the new status quo now, that the space between the U.S. and China has narrowed almost overnight — but it hasn’t narrowed overnight, it’s been years of progress,” Prakash said.
“If there’s one takeaway for the West, it’s that their understanding of China is incredibly limited — and we don’t know what’s coming next,” he added.
No meaningful threat to U.S. AI — yet
Still, leading AI execs aren’t convinced that DeepSeek poses any sort of meaningful risks to the businesses of AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic just yet.
While experts on the whole agree DeepSeek’s AI advances have been impressive, doubts have been raised about the startup’s claims about cost.
A report from semiconductor research firm SemiAnalysis last month estimated that DeepSeek’s hardware expenditure is “well higher” than $500 million over the company’s history. DeepSeek was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.
The report found that DeepSeek’s research and development costs and expenses related to ownership are significant and that generating “synthetic data” for the model to train on would require “considerable amount of compute.”
Some technologists believe that DeepSeek may have been able to achieve such a high level of performance by training its models on larger U.S. AI systems.
This technique, known as “distillation,” involves having more powerful AI models evaluate the quality of answers being generated by a newer model.
It’s a claim that OpenAI itself has alluded to, telling CNBC in a statement last month that it’s reviewing reports that DeepSeek may have “inappropriately” used output data from its models to develop its AI model, a method referred to as “distillation.”
“Most of the market fear around [DeepSeek] is in fact misplaced,” Hoffman told CNBC. “It still requires large models — it was distilled from large models.”
“I think the short answer everyone should take is: game on — but large models still really matter,” he added.
Victor Riparbelli, CEO of AI video platform Synthesia, told CNBC that although DeepSeek challenged the “paradigm that brute force scaling is the only way to kind of build better and better models,” the idea that companies are going to suddenly shift significant amounts of their AI workloads is misguided.
“I still think that when you look at users of these technologies, all the workflows, I think when we look back in three months’ time, I think 0.01% of those is going to be moved to Deepseek from OpenAI and Anthropic,” Riparbelli said.
Meredith Whitaker, president of the Signal Foundation, said DeepSeek’s development doesn’t move the needle much for the industry as market momentum is still broadly in favor of larger AI models. The Signal Foundation is a nonprofit that supports the encrypted messaging app Signal.
“This is not something that’s going to disrupt the concentration of power or the geopolitical balance at this stage,” Whitaker told CNBC. “I think we have to keep our eye on the ball there and recognize that it’s really this ‘******* is better’ paradigm that is not reduced through efficiency gains historically, that is driving this concentration.”

Trump offers key concessions to Putin ahead of Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia
Trump offers key concessions to Putin ahead of Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia
Vladimir Putin is riding high ahead of critical US-Russia talks Tuesday in Saudi Arabia on ending the Ukraine war.
Donald Trump’s administration has ended the Russian president’s international isolation, shattered Western unity on the conflict and cast doubt on how far the US would go to defend Europe, signaling a stunning shift toward Putin and away from America’s traditional allies.
With a flurry of conflicting statements in their first forays into Europe, Trump aides also fueled concerns that the US president will embrace just about any deal with Putin — even if it’s a bad one for Ukraine and a continent whose borders are again threatened by Russian expansionism.
Suggestions that the US will exclude its European friends from peace talks on Ukraine — despite demanding they provide security guarantees and troops as part of any deal to end the war — also triggered alarm in capitals on the continent, with France calling key leaders to an emergency meeting in Paris on Monday.
Trump has also sparked fears that Ukraine itself would not be part of talks that are critical to its survival as a nation after its sovereign territory was invaded by a totalitarian neighbor bringing war crimes, civilian carnage and destruction on its people.
The president on Sunday raised the prospect of a meeting with Putin “very soon.” He told reporters in Florida: “We’re moving along. We’re trying to get a peace with Russia, Ukraine, and we’re working very hard on it.”
After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would “never accept any decisions between the United States and Russia about Ukraine,” Trump gave a vague assurance that he would be “involved.”
Rubio says the Saudi talks are a first step
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will head the US delegation for talks hosted by the Saudis, who are friendly with both Moscow and the Trump team.
Rubio styled the meeting as a follow-up to Trump’s phone call last week with Putin. “The next few weeks and days will determine whether it’s serious or not,” he said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “Ultimately, one phone call does not make peace. One phone call does not solve a war as complex as this one.”
Rubio also contradicted comments by Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, who said Saturday that while Kyiv would be involved in peace talks, European nations wouldn’t. “If it’s real negotiations — and we’re not there yet — but if that were to happen, Ukraine will have to be involved, because they’re the one that were invaded, and the Europeans will have to be involved because they have sanctions on Putin and Russia as well, and they’ve contributed to this effort,” Rubio said.
The evolving US line on the proposed peace deal shows that it’s often unwise to overreact to the early rhetoric of Trump and his subordinates before the substance of their positions is locked in. Without the new US president’s determination to forge ties with Putin, there’d be little hope of ending a vicious war in the coming months. And there still appears to be substantial room for Ukraine and European states to shape negotiations that can be fully successful only with their buy-in.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski said in Munich over the weekend that he thought Trump’s call with Putin was a mistake since it “vindicated” the Russian leader and lowered morale in Ukraine. But he added: “When President Trump says as part of a deal there will have to be European troops, we will have to be asked to supply them, so sooner or later we will have to be involved.”
Still, mixed messages from the administration will fuel concerns that Trump will agree to a deal with Putin that validates the ******** invasion and will then impose it on Ukraine. While most foreign policy realists accept that Ukraine will not get back all the land seized by Russia, Trump was criticized for throwing away leverage with his call with the Russian leader. As was Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said that a peace deal would not include a path to NATO membership for Ukraine and that no US peacekeeping troops would be involved. Some of those statements were later watered down by Hegseth and other administration officials.
Concerns were exacerbated by Trump’s warp-speed attempt last week to fully rehabilitate Putin, an accused war criminal, when he promoted Russia’s foreign policy positions rather than the West’s. The president, for instance, seemed to sympathize with Putin’s rationales for the invasion and called for his return to the G8 grouping of industrialized nations after Russia was kicked out over the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Trump’s rejection of the previous administration’s lockstep coordination with Europe over Ukraine and the absence of Kyiv’s negotiators from the Saudi talks also appeared to seriously weaken the Western negotiating position. European officials are likely to be far more sympathetic to Ukraine’s views than Trump — and so if they are absent from any full-scale negotiations, Zelensky’s position could be severely diminished.
A searing attack on European democracy by Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security conference — and his decision to meet the leader of the far-right anti-immigrant AfD party just days before the ******* election — meanwhile shook European leaders. The speech was a clear sign the Trump administration intends to promote many of the populist movements that are evoking dark echoes on a continent twice destroyed by war in the 20th century. And Hegseth’s blunt warning in Brussels last week that Europeans needed to “take ownership of conventional security on the continent” was widely seen as a sign of Trump’s antipathy for NATO and its security umbrella.
All of this is music to Putin’s ears, since it suggests that his status as an international pariah is over, and that he has a deal within reach over Ukraine that would cement his territorial gains. The divisions Trump has opened inside NATO is delivering on one of Russia’s most important foreign policy goals.
“It’s indeed like Easter, Hanukkah, Christmas, (the) birthday of Vladimir Putin and everything is happening in one day,” Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, told CNN’s Bianna Golodryga on Sunday. “Whatever Champagne is not chilled is brought to the fridge and other bottles are uncorked.”
France calls emergency meeting
The crisis in transatlantic relations prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to call an informal meeting Monday with the leaders of Germany, Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, as well as the heads of the European Council, the European Commission and NATO’s secretary general.
While Trump’s hostility to 80 years of post-World War II security policy is a stunning shift in US policy and a sign of his antipathy to internationalist goals, Europe has left itself vulnerable to more isolationist currents in US policy that have long been part of America’s DNA.
Years of strangled defense budgets have left most non-US NATO members poorly prepared for the task of defending Europe and the dominant role the Trump administration is now demanding. Swift increases in defense spending will mean painful choices for leaders who are already struggling to finance ******** states and are hampered by low-growth economies.
But there are already some indications that the Trump administration’s hardline position is concentrating minds as leaders seek to impress the president. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who plans to meet with Trump in the coming days, said he’s willing to send British troops to Ukraine as part of any peace deal. Writing in Monday’s Daily Telegraph, Starmer also said European nations “must increase our defense spending and take on a greater role in NATO” — but added that US support would remain critical for guaranteeing peace.
The talks in Saudi Arabia will also highlight another evolving theme in international relations — the growing clout of the kingdom — evidenced by both its growing role under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Middle East affairs but also by its soft-power initiatives like investments in European sports leagues and its hosting of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Trump has made no secret of his admiration for strongmen leaders, and the prince and Putin have a tight relationship. A source close to the Saudi court told CNN’s Alex Marquardt that hosting the talks would enhance the Saudis’ image and prestige and show them to be players on one of the top issues of the day.
Saudi Arabia will be vital to another of Trump’s foreign policy goals — ending the war in Gaza. The administration is trying to coax the Saudis and the Israelis toward a diplomatic normalization agreement that could reshape the geopolitics of the Middle East and solidify an Arab front against Iran. But such a deal would be politically impossible for the Saudis without a path to a state for the Palestinians. And Arab states have pushed back hard against Trump’s extraordinary plan to relocate Palestinians en masse out of Gaza in what would amount to a form of ethnic cleansing.
Trump’s fantastical plan for the US to “own” and redevelop Gaza, as well as his apparent desire to enter talks with Putin on Ukraine, underscore the risks of his unorthodox approach to foreign relations. But the president is b ack in the White House at a unique moment that offers opportunities to pursue agreements that could make America and the world safer — that is, unless he inks deals that ignore grave security implications.
Sikorski warned in Munich that the president was playing for huge stakes.
“The credibility of the United States depends on how this war (in Ukraine) ends — not just the Trump administration, but the United States itself.”

Ukraine and Europe Worry about Being Sidelined as Trump Pushes Direct Talks with Russia on War’s End
Ukraine and Europe Worry about Being Sidelined as Trump Pushes Direct Talks with Russia on War’s End
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s approach to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine has left European allies and Ukrainian officials worried they are being largely sidelined by the new U.S. administration as Washington and Moscow plan direct negotiations.
With the three-year war grinding on, Trump is sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and special envoy Steve Witkoff to Saudi Arabia for talks with Russian counterparts, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to publicly discuss the upcoming diplomatic efforts and spoke on condition of anonymity.
It is unclear to what extent Ukrainian or European officials will be represented in discussions expected to take place in Riyadh in the coming days. The official said the United States sees negotiations as early-stage and fluid, and who ultimately ends up at the table could change.
In an exchange with reporters Sunday, Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “will be involved” in the negotiations. Trump offered no further explanation.
The outreach comes after comments by top Trump advisers this past week, including Vice President JD Vance, raised new concerns in Kyiv and other European capitals that the Republican administration is intent on quick resolution to the conflict with minimum input from Europe.
“Decades of the old relationship between Europe and America are ending,” Zelenskyy said in an address Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. “From now on, things will be different, and Europe needs to adjust to that.”
White House officials on Sunday pushed back against the notion that Europe has been left out of the conversation. Trump spoke by phone in recent days with French President Emmanuel Macron and is expected to consult with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer this week.
During his visit to Munich and Paris, Vance held talks with Macron, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, ******* President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte as well as Zelenskyy.
“Now they may not like some of this sequencing that is going on in these negotiations but I have to push back on this … notion that they aren’t being consulted,” Waltz told “Fox News Sunday.”
“They absolutely are and at the end of the day, though, this is going to be under President Trump’s leadership that we get this war to an end,’’ Waltz said.
Rubio, who was in Israel on Sunday before heading to Saudi Arabia, said the U.S. is taking a careful approach as it reengages with Moscow after the Biden administration’s clampdown on contacts with the Kremlin following the February 2022 invasion.
Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week and the two leaders agreed to begin high-level talks on ending the war. They were initially presented as two-way, but Trump later affirmed that Ukraine would have a seat — though he did not say at what stage.
It was not immediately clear whether any Ukrainians would take part in the upcoming Riyadh talks. A Ukrainian delegation was in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to pave the way for a possible visit by Zelenskyy, according to Ukraine’s economy minister.
Starmer, the U.K. premier, wrote in an op-ed for Monday’s Daily Telegraph that Ukraine must be involved in any negotiations on its future “because anything less would accept Putin’s position that Ukraine is not a real nation.
Starmer also recalled the U.S. disastrous troop withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden. “We cannot have another situation like Afghanistan, where the U.S. negotiated directly with the Taliban and cut out the Afghan government,” Starmer said. “I feel sure that President Trump will want to avoid this too.”
Trump on Sunday said he believed Putin is eager for a deal, while also noting that Russia has historically impressed on the battlefield.
“I think he wants to stop fighting,” Trump said. “They have a big powerful machine, you understand that. they defeated Hitler and they defeated Napoleon. They’ve been fighting a long time.”
Heather Conley, a deputy assistant secretary of state for Central Europe during Republican President George W. Bush’s administration, said that with Trump’s current approach to Moscow, the U.S. appears to be “seeking to create a new international approach based on a modern-day concert of great powers.”
“As in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it is only for the great powers to decide the fate of nations and to take — either by purchase or force — that which strengthens the great powers’ economic and security interests,” Conley said. “Each of these powers posit claims or coerce countries in their respective regional spheres of influence.”
There is some debate inside the administration about its developing approach to Moscow, with some more in favor of a rapid rapprochement and others wary that Putin is looking to fray the Euro-Atlantic alliance as he aims to reclaim Russian status and wield greater influence on the continent, according to the U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Trump said last week that he would like to see Russia rejoin what is now the Group of Seven major economies. Russia was suspended from the G8 after Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.
“I’d like to have them back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out. Look, it’s not a question of liking Russia or not liking Russia,” Trump told reporters. “I think Putin would love to be back.”
The anticipated Saudi talks also come amid tension over Trump’s push to get the Ukrainians to agree to give the U.S access to Ukraine’s deposits of rare earth minerals in exchange for some $66 billion in military aid that Washington has provided Kyiv since the start of the war, as well as future defense assistance.
Zelenskyy, who met on Friday with Vance and other senior U.S. officials in Munich, said he had directed Ukraine’s minister to not sign off, at least for now. He said in an interview that the deal as presented by the U.S. was too focused on American interests and did not include security guarantees for Ukraine.
The White House called Zelenskyy’s decision “short-sighted,” and argued that a rare-earth’s deal would tie Ukraine closer to the United States — something that Moscow doesn’t want to see.
European officials were also left unsettled by some of Vance’s remarks during his five-day visit to Paris and Munich last week in which he lectured them on free speech and ******** migration on the continent. He warned that they risk losing public support if they don’t quickly change course.
Vance also met while in Munich with Alice Weidel, the co-leader and candidate for chancellor of the far-right and anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party in this month’s election.

This affordable case fixed the worst woe of iPhone’s Camera Control
This affordable case fixed the worst woe of iPhone’s Camera Control
Camera Control was the standout hardware innovation on the iPhone 16 Pro. Adding a two-stage shutter button that lets users control everything from exposure and depth to switching lenses and photographic styles was a fantastic convenience.
“I consider it a clever extra feature on the iPhone 16 that I’ll enjoy using when the time is right,” Digital Trends veteran Andy Boxall wrote in a fantastic explainer for the Camera Control. It does a lot more than just mimic the two-stage shutter on a DSLR, eclipsing them with a clever amalgamation of smartphone software.
However, a protective case quickly buries a chunk of its appeal. And trust me. You don’t want to carry your iPhone 16 Pro without a protective case. I used to live the no-case life, but the phone is not as resilient as you think, and I can say that after scuffing and roughing up my iPhone 15 Pro into a pretty bad shape despite never dropping it.
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
Thankfully, ESR makes a fantastic case that not only protects the iPhone 16 Pro, but also offers a clever solution to Camera Control concerns and adds a dash of kickstand versatility, as well. The best part? It costs only $25.
Why cases are a problem?
You see, the Camera Control is a tap and swipe-sensitive surface with a force sensor underneath and a capacitive layer, as well. The overall system responds to tap, press, hold, and swipe gestures. To get the best out of that, your shutter-happy index finger ideally needs to rest comfortably on the button’s sapphire crystal surface for it to comfortably register the user input.

The moment you put on a case, three problems raise their head. The ergonomics of comfortably using the Camera Control button take a cumbersome dip. The button is left exposed to the forces of nature. The cutout left for the button makes the cases look ugly.
The thicker the case, the more difficult it becomes to operate the Camera Control. I recently bought myself one of those hulking, metallic cases to protect a phone that cost me roughly $1,700 from my legendarily clumsy hands and forgetful manners. Well, the deep cutout on the metallic sides turned using the Camera Control into a frustrating chore.

Well, the deep cutout on the metallic sides turned using the Camera Control into a frustrating chore.
You can tap on the button, but swipe gestures are impossible to execute across the capacitive surface. I have smaller-than-average hands and thin fingers, so I could at least get my fingertip to rest fully on the button’s surface. For folks with thicker fingers, it’s not easy. And as the thickness of a case increases, it becomes even more difficult to interact.
Some cases offer a sloping cutout on either end of the Camera Control button, which makes it a tad easier to execute swipe gestures. However, on protective cases with a straight cutout, or those that surround the button fully, you are in for some functional irritations.
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
Still think you can go commando? Here’s one unfortunate user’s account on Reddit, whose iPhone 16 Pro took a single drop and ended up with a shattered Camera Control button — despite using a case with a button guard.
ESR has a solution — on a budget
There are two kinds of smartphone buyers out there. The first class intends to hold on to their phone for at least a few years and spends well on a rough case without thinking twice about how it looks. The other category seeks a solution that doesn’t condemn their phone’s sleek looks to hell. And if it doesn’t cost a bomb, even better.
If you are looking for a case that doesn’t leave the Camera Control button unprotected, the price you pay is going to be high. Apple will have you spend a minimum of $50 for that convenience, and so will partner brands such as Otterbox and Beats hawking their ware on the Apple Store. Options from the likes of Spigen cost even more.
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
Enter ESR with its HaloLock Classic Hybrid case. This case offers it all, at half the asking price of what Apple asks, even lower compared to a few other brands out there. What you get with this clear case is a design that is… ahem… similar… to Apple’s own, but with a crucial distinction.
Now, if you haven’t come across ESR’s gear before, well, they balance quality and affordability pretty well. I’ve been using their iPad keyboard cases and multi-device wireless chargers for a while now, and really love their solid build as well as longevity. This iPhone 16 series case is no different.
The real gem, however, is the dedicated Camera Control button that sits almost flush with the case surface. I think they have used virtually the same stack — and the looks — of every other third-party brand that is making cases with a white camera control button.
Close-up view of the Camera Control layer on the ESR Halo Lock case.
Competitive “inspiration” aside, what matters here is the experience. And on this crucial parameter, ESR doesn’t disappoint. Single and double-tap gestures work just fine, and so do the long presses. I was a tad skeptical about the swipe gestures, but they worked flawlessly, as well.
In roughly a week’s worth of testing, I had no issues launching the camera from the Lock Screen and digging into the Camera Control shenanigans. It doesn’t feel flimsy, and there’s no undue sideways movement to it. Everything feels well put together, and so does the rest of the package.

ESR says the Camera Control cover has a triple-layer design. There’s an impact-resistant 9H tempered glass layer on the top, which is claimed to handle up to 66 lb point pressure and 256 lb surface pressure.
Underneath is a polycarbonate frame that blocks dust. Then we have a PCB core that binds a six-element capacitive layer block to register the finger gestures. The sum total is a smooth experience of interacting with the Camera Control button without having to worry about functional reliability or protecting the real thing underneath.
Oh, there is more
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
There are a few additional niceties that the ESR HaloLock Classic Hybrid case offers, which are an absolute necessity for any iPhone user. First, there is MagSafe support. The magnetic ring underneath is said to offer 1,500 g of holding force.
In my experience, I didn’t run into any troubles with perching my iPhone 16 Pro atop wireless charging stands or Apple’s MagSafe puck. Power transfer is unobstructed, and I didn’t run into any undue heating.
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
But a case is nothing without its resilience charms. This one doesn’t disappoint. There are reinforced shock-absorbing Air Guard corners that can withstand drops from up to a height of 11 feet, while the overall fit is also reassuringly snug. ESR is claiming MIL-STD-810 military-grade protection for this case.
I couldn’t independently verify the height testing, but an unexpected drop from my jeans pocket a few days ago didn’t leave any scars on my pricey as heck phone. A close call with a marble floor, but, phew!
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
I have used ESR’s protective cases on a variety of devices, and it has been a mainstay for my tenth-gen iPad. So far, I haven’t had any long-term complaints about their durability, and I expect the iPhone 16 Pro case to deliver a similar output.
I have also grown quite fond of the ingenious camera island protection ring, which also doubles as. nifty kickstand. Made out of zinc alloy material, this stand can prop the iPhone 16 Pro in portrait as well as landscape orientation.
Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends
While that is convenient in itself, it also keeps the camera lenses from surface contact, avoiding scratches as well as impact-related damage. However, the metallic surface gets scuffed, so there’s that aesthetic caveat. I would, however, take damage to a $25 case rather than spending hundreds of dollars to fix a cracked lens.
Overall, the ESR HaloLock Classic Hybrid Case for the iPhone 16 Pro (and its Max sibling) is an easy recommendation. It delivers practical benefits with a standout functional perk, all tied to a $25 sticker price. Go, get it!
The ESR HaloLock Classic Hybrid Case is now available, with a 10% discount for Digital Trends readers using the code ESRIP16NEW on Amazon.

Gen Z are taking telephobia courses to learn the lost art of a call
Gen Z are taking telephobia courses to learn the lost art of a call
Nottingham College in the U.K. is offering a telephobia course to help students with phone call anxiety.

There was once a time when picking up a phone call was the main mode of communication, but now with endless choices available, some tech-savvy Gen Z are consumed with anxiety by the ringing of a phone.
Generation Z — born between 1997 and 2012 — are struggling with telephobia, a “relatively recent phenomena” describing people who fear phone calls, according to Liz Baxter, a careers advisor at Nottingham College, a U.K.-based school for pupils aged 16 to 18 and older.
“Telephobia is a fear or anxiety around making and receiving telephone calls,” Baxter told CNBC Make It in an interview.
“They’ve [Gen Z] just simply not had the opportunity for making and receiving telephone calls. It is not the main function of their phones these days, they can do anything on the phone, but we automatically default to texting, voice notes, and anything except actually using a telephone for its original intended purpose, and so people have lost that skill,” she explained.
Baxter said that many of the college’s older pupils are expected to take telephone interviews as a pre-screening for job applications and were “falling at that hurdle,” because they lacked the awareness and confidence of navigating a call.
“In a class of 25 to 30 students, I would imagine at least three-quarters of them will experience and admit to anxiety about not using the telephone,” she said.
The college’s telephobia seminar is part of a series of career-related sessions to help bring pupils’ phone skills back up to scratch.
The session involves practicing a series of scenarios where you have to make a phone call, for example, calling the doctors to make an appointment, calling in sick to work, and other everyday scenarios. The pupils are expected to sit back to back to mimic a regular phone call where they can’t see the person on the other end and practice by using scripts.
Baxter said attending just one session boosts pupils’ confidence because it demystifies how phone calls really work.
She said the rise of telephobia can partly be blamed on the Covid-19 pandemic, during which young people became incredibly isolated.
“If they’ve missed out two years’ worth of social interaction and ebb and flow, then that obviously plays into how they’re feeling about being in social situations [and] in larger contexts, especially when they’re feeling uncomfortable.”
‘They think that you’re laughing at them’
Gen Z’s anxiety around responding to phone calls stems from a fear of the unknown, according to Baxter.
“They associate the ringing phone with fear,” she said. “I don’t know who’s on the end of it. I don’t know how to deal with it.”
A Uswitch survey of 2,000 U.K. adults in 2024 found that almost a quarter of 18 to 34-year-olds never pick up phone calls. Around 61% of the age group prefer to receive a message rather than an audio call.
Over half of 18-to-24-year-olds think an out-of-the-blue phone call means bad news, while 48% prefer to communicate using social media, and over a third prefer voice messages.
Gen Z are also concerned with how they sound on calls as they have no visual feedback to confirm how they’re doing, Baxter noted.
“Strangely, a lot of our students are really comfortable on Microsoft Teams because they can see the visual clues. They can read your face. They can judge your reactions. They can see how they’re doing.
“I think that plays into a large part of the anxiety when it comes to audio only calls. They can’t see you. They think that you’re laughing at them, or they think that you are judging them, so they’re not getting that response back from you in order to assure themselves of how they’re doing.”
‘Take back the power’
Phone calls don’t have to be scary, Baxter said, emphasizing that there are some easy ways to prepare to take a call if you are expecting one.
“The great thing about phone calls and audio calls, is that you can cheat. You can use post-it pads, you can write yourself cheat notes… the non-visual aspect of a telephone call can actually work in students’ favor when it comes to supporting them to come up with the right answers.”
This starts with preparing your environment, so making sure you’re going to be in a quiet safe space, where you’re not interrupted, and your phone is charged and working, Baxter said.
The careers advisor explained that if the call is for an interview, then researching the organization is helpful.
“So write yourself a little script. Think about what you are going to say. That can help to minimize your anxiety,” she said. This can be aided by writing cheat notes, which can remind you of what you want to say.
Finally, the telephobia seminar also encourages practicing breathing exercises, if a call makes someone feel anxious or overwhelmed.
“We encourage students to breathe in deeply, hold their breath, let it out slowly, and then notice the resulting difference in slowing your heartbeat and making you feel much calmer,” Baxter said.
Young people are accustomed to associating phone calls with negative things, but Baxter teaches her pupils that someone could be calling to congratulate them for passing on to the next stage of the interview, or that they’ve passed their exam.
“So it’s trying to see that actually answering your telephone call shouldn’t be dangerous, and that they are very much in control… it’s encouraging our students to take back the power and [know that] if this telephone call is something that I do not want, I have the choice to end the phone call, and that gives me power.'”

The Accolade Sports Collection Brings 90s Gaming To Modern Platforms – Skewed ‘n Reviewed
WTMG’s Leo Faria: “What we have here is a completely functional, somewhat well-remastered and feature-filled collection of sports titles that, sadly, just haven’t aged well at all. Between the ultra dated controls, poor framerate on the ones aiming for a faux-3D effect, or lack of appealing licenses, Accolade Sports Collection is more of an interesting novelty and a way to preserve some lesser-known games to a future generation, than an actual digital sports library worth your time. I appreciate the intent behind it, but those games just aren’t very interesting.”

Singapore finds opposition party leader guilty of lying to parliament
Pritam Singh, leader of Singapore’s main opposition Workers’ Party, arrives at its State Courts on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025.

A court in Singapore on Monday found opposition Workers’ Party leader Pritam Singh guilty of two counts of lying to parliament, a verdict that could see him barred from contesting a general election this year.
Singh had pleaded not guilty and his sentencing was due later on Monday. The prosecution has asked for a maximum fine of S$7,000 ($5,231) for each charge.
If the combined fines amount to more than S$10,000, or if he is jailed for more than one year, Singh would be unable to run in an election, which must be held by November.
The charges against Singh, 48, stem from allegations he gave false testimony to a parliamentary committee in 2021 about a fellow party member allegedly lying to parliament.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong last month formed a committee to review electoral boundaries, an indicator that a general election in the city-state could come soon.
Wong’s People’s Action Party is almost certain to dominate the election and win most seats as it has every vote since independence in 1965. Its share of the popular vote will be a barometer for Wong’s public approval.
