Endangered bighorn sheep spotted in downtown Palm Springs. Here’s what to do if they return
Endangered bighorn sheep spotted in downtown Palm Springs. Here’s what to do if they return
Things you may spot in downtown Palm Springs: Tourists and local residents strolling along Palm Canyon Drive, a towering Marilyn Monroe striking a pose and … bighorn sheep engaging in some retail therapy? Yes, you read that right.
A video that has been making rounds on social media all week shows two bewildered-looking bighorn sheep crossing Palm Canyon Drive, between East Andreas Road and Museum Way, and taking in the shops and slowed cars around them.
A voice in the video is heard saying, “They’re just like, ‘Umm, trying to go to brunch,'” providing cheeky commentary as to why the two animals may have galloped their way down the mountain and into the downtown area (Psst, Lulu’s is just a few blocks south). Bighorn sheep typically eat grasses, shrubs and forbs, not pancakes, eggs Benedict and mimosas.
Another voice says the person capturing the video can get closer to the sheep because they are tame, but the Bighorn Institute advises against that.
The video was captured and shared on Facebook by Jeff Witthuhn of the boutique Peepas, according to a post, who did not immediately respond to The Desert Sun’s request for comment.
Peninsular bighorn sheep call the Coachella Valley home. They live in dry, rocky, low-elevation desert slopes, canyons and washes from the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains near Palm Springs south into Baja California, Mexico.
The sheep have previously been spotted grazing on the grass at the O’Donnell Golf Club, located in downtown Palm Springs, which is located right next to rocky, mountainous terrain and the Cactus to Clouds trailhead.
Peninsular bighorn sheep are endangered species
A desert bighorn sheep **** and lamb, part of the northern Santa Rosa Mountains herd near Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.
The Peninsular bighorn sheep are an endangered species in the United States, and have been since March 18, 1998.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service determined that Peninsular bighorn sheep are in danger of extinction throughout a significant portion of their range due to disease, predation, habitat loss and human disturbance, according to the Bighorn Institute.
In the 1970s, Peninsular bighorn sheep were estimated to number nearly 1,200 in the U.S. and 4,500-7,800 in Baja California, according to the Bighorn Institute. Helicopter surveys from 2022 indicated that approximately 800 live in the U.S., while surveys of Mexico estimate the Baja California population at 2,000-2,500. The institute states that because there are more animals in Mexico than in the U.S., and the ******** government has established a conservation program for managing Peninsular bighorn sheep, only the U.S. population is included in the endangered listing.
In 2019, at least 20 desert bighorn sheep died in a San Gorgonio mountain population due to pneumonia, most likely from domestic sheep or goats. Wildlife specialists were also examining other possible causes, including pathogens from feral cattle to the west and disease from a different bighorn group to the south.
How humans have impacted desert bighorn sheep
A bighorn sheep butts against a cactus on the South Lykken Trail in Palm Springs, Calif. on Sunday, December 20, 2020. The sheep was part of a herd grazing along the trail.
Human disturbance has been a factor in the species’ decline.
The Bighorn Institute states that some of the dangers they are exposed to at the urban-mountain area include automobile collisions, poisonous plants, high predator densities and parasites.
Between 1991 and 1996 in the northern Santa Rosa Mountains, the Bighorn Institute documented five sheep struck and killed by cars, five killed by ingesting poisonous ornamental plants and one strangled in a wire fence. During the six-year study, urbanization accounted for 34% of adult bighorn mortalities, making it the leading known cause of death for bighorn in this area.
Urbanization in their habitat also indirectly affects bighorn sheep by altering their habitat use, diet and behavior. Changes can also make the species more prone to parasites and disease, and potentially more vulnerable to predators.
What to do if you see bighorn sheep
A pair of desert bighorn sheep in Sand to Snow National Monument, Whitewater Canyon
Peninsular bighorn sheep are an endangered species and it is against the law to handle or harass them without proper permits, even if it is for the benefit of the sheep, the Bighorn Institute states.
In case of a bighorn sheep emergency, call the Bighorn Institute at 760-346-7334. If you are unable to reach the institute, call Erin Schaeffer with California Fish and Wildlife at 760-628-4022.
If you spot bighorn sheep on trails or elsewhere in public, the Bighorn Institute has a few tips:
Do not take dogs into bighorn sheep habitats because they are seen as dangerous predators and can cause them to flee from important feeding and watering sites
Minimize disturbance to bighorn sheep. The institute states alarming bighorn sheep can stress them, causing their heart rate and energy expenditure to increase
Avoid trail use in bighorn lambing areas during lambing season (January 1 through June 30)
Don’t short-cut trails and create new impacts
Avoid camping or lingering next to riparian areas, springs or other water sources vital to desert wildlife, especially during drought conditions
Leave no trace on trails and respect all voluntary and mandatory trail closures

******** scientists have made a huge technical advancement in optical imaging technology, developing a powerful laser that could overhaul the global surveillance industry.
The tech has the potential to enable China to observe foreign military satellites with unrivaled precision or even capture details as fine as a human face from low-Earth orbit.
A team from the ******** Academy of Sciences’ Aerospace Information Research Institute managed to capture images with the camera, with millimeter-level resolution from distances exceeding 62 miles / 100 kilometers – previously thought impossible.
The breakthrough was described in a study published last week in the peer-reviewed ******** Journal of Lasers.
The discovery was made during a trial of the camera across Qinghai Lake in China’s northwest. Researchers deployed the groundbreaking synthetic aperture LiDAR system – a type of laser-based imaging system with a wide field of vision.
Positioned on the lake’s northern shore, the camera targeted arrays of reflective prisms placed 101.8 km away, benefiting from conditions with high visibility, minimal cloud cover and steady winds.
The system detected details as small as 1.7mm / 0.07 inches and measured distances with an accuracy of 15.6mm / 0.61 inches – a performance 100 times better than the current best spy cameras, and the best telescopes relying on traditional lenses.
The scientists employed several technological innovations to achieve this landmark technological advancement. By splitting the laser beam across a 4×4 micro-lens array, they expanded the system’s optical aperture from 17.2mm / 0.68 inches to 68.8mm / 2.71 inches, overcoming the usual tradeoff between aperture size and field of vision.
They also used a specialized laser module to send signals with frequencies beyond 10 gigahertz. This provided fine range resolution, facilitating precise distance measurements. At the same time, a narrow color spectrum was maintained to enhance azimuth resolution, which improves horizontal detail detection.
The new system is built on microwave synthetic aperture radar principles, but operates at optical wavelengths, delivering far sharper images than radar-based alternatives. It also outperforms previous long-range imaging attempts; 2011, for example, US defense contractor Lockheed Martin reached a 7.87 inch / 200mm azimuth resolution from 1 mile / 1.6 km.
The technology marks a huge shift in how satellites – and objects on Earth – can be monitored.

Pentagon to fire 5,400 probationary workers, institute hiring freeze
Pentagon to fire 5,400 probationary workers, institute hiring freeze
The Defense Department said Friday that it’s cutting about 5,400 probationary workers starting next week and will put a hiring freeze in place.
It comes after staffers from the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, were at the Pentagon earlier in the week and received lists of such employees, U.S. officials said. They said those lists did not include uniformed military personnel, who are exempt. Probationary employees are generally those on the job for less than a year and who have yet to gain civil service protection.
“We anticipate reducing the Department’s civilian workforce by 5-8% to produce efficiencies and refocus the Department on the President’s priorities and restoring readiness in the force,” Darin Selnick, who is acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, said in a statement.
President Trump’s administration is firing thousands of federal workers who have fewer civil service protections. Thousands of probationary workers in federal health agencies were terminated last weekend. And more than 6,000 Internal Revenue Service employees were expected to be terminated by the end of this week, a source familiar with the agency’s plans told CBS News.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has supported cuts, posting on X last week that the Pentagon needs “to cut the **** (HQ) and grow the muscle (warfighters.)” He directed the Pentagon to come up with plans to cut 8% from the defense budget in each of the next five years, sources familiar with his plans told CBS News Thursday.
Hegseth directed the military services to identify $50 billion in programs that could be cut next year to redirect those savings to fund Trump’s priorities, Robert Salesses, who is performing the duties of deputy secretary of defense, said Wednesday. It represents about 8% of the military’s budget.
“Through our budgets, the Department of Defense will once again resource warfighting and cease unnecessary spending that set our military back under the previous administration, including through so-called ‘climate change’ and other woke programs, as well as excessive bureaucracy,” Salesses said in Wednesday’s statement.
The Defense Department is the largest government agency, with the Government Accountability Office finding in 2023 that it had more than 700,000 full-time civilian workers.
This also comes as Mr. Trump announced Friday he was firing Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was nominating retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine to replace him.
Along with Brown’s dismissal, Hegseth announced that Chief of Naval Operations Lisa Franchetti and Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force James Slife were also being fired. Franchetti was the first woman to lead the Navy, while Brown was only the second ****** chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In reversal, Trump says Russia attacked Ukraine
In reversal, Trump says Russia attacked Ukraine
By Nandita Bose and Steve Holland
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump reversed course on Friday and said Russia did in fact invade Ukraine, and that Kyiv would soon sign a minerals agreement with the United States as part of efforts to end the Ukraine war.
Trump had said on Tuesday that Ukraine “should have never started” the war three years ago, prompting a wave of criticism both domestically and internationally. Pressed on the subject in an interview with Fox News Radio on Friday, he acknowledged Russia had invaded Ukraine on the order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
“Russia attacked, but they shouldn’t have let him attack,” Trump said, adding that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and then-U.S. President Joe Biden should have taken steps to avert the invasion.
Later, Trump predicted a minerals agreement would be reached soon.
“We’re signing an agreement, hopefully in the next fairly short ******* of time,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about a possible deal for Ukraine’s minerals.
Zelenskiy said separately on Friday that Ukrainian and U.S. teams were working on a draft agreement. “I am hoping for … a fair result,” he said in a video address after sharp exchanges this week between the two leaders.
Trump denounced Zelenskiy as a “dictator” on Wednesday and warned he had to move quickly to secure peace with Russia, which invaded Ukraine nearly three years ago, or risk losing his country.
The change in tone from the United States, Ukraine’s most important backer, has alarmed European officials and stoked fears that Kyiv could be forced into a peace deal that favors Putin.
Zelenskiy had said Trump was trapped in a “disinformation bubble”, but later toned down his statements and said he was hoping for American pragmatism.
Zelenskiy on Wednesday rejected U.S. demands for $500 billion in mineral wealth from Ukraine to repay Washington for wartime aid, saying the United States had supplied nowhere near that sum so far and offered no specific security guarantees in the agreement.
Ukraine has valuable deposits of strategic minerals that the U.S. wants. These include uranium, lithium, cobalt, rare earths and more and are used in applications such as batteries, technology and aerospace.
‘THEY DON’T HAVE ANY CARDS’
Speaking at a White House event earlier on Friday, Trump was critical of Zelenskiy while refraining from negative comments about Putin.
“I’ve had very good talks with Putin, and I’ve had not such good talks with Ukraine,” Trump said. “They don’t have any cards, but they’re playing tough.”
Separately, the United States on Friday proposed a United Nations resolution to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The three-paragraph U.S. draft, seen by Reuters, mourns loss of life during the “Russia-Ukraine conflict” and “implores a swift end to the conflict.”
Kyiv and its European allies want their own text to be adopted by the UN General Assembly on Monday calling for de-escalation, an early cessation of hostilities and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The ******* government said on Friday that Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Zelenskiy agreed in a phone call that Ukraine must have a seat at the table in peace talks.
Polish President Andrzej Duda, meanwhile, urged Zelenskiy to keep up calm and constructive cooperation with Trump.
Duda, whose term in office expires this year, was one of Trump’s preferred international partners during his 2017-2021 presidency and they have described themselves as friends.
Poland’s president is due to meet Trump in Washington on Saturday, Poland’s state news agency PAP reported.

On $15 a month, Venezuela’s teachers live hand to mouth
On $15 a month, Venezuela’s teachers live hand to mouth
With a monthly salary of $15, a teacher in Venezuela earns nowhere near enough to cover their basic food necessities, never mind rent or medicine.
Many in the crisis-stricken South American country are forced to work multiple jobs, or pool their money with family.
Thousands have emigrated in pursuit of greater financial stability.
“For the past two years, the situation has been horrible; you can’t even buy shoes,” 70-year-old Maria Cerezo, who has been a teacher in the public sector for 39 years, told AFP at a thrift shop in the capital Caracas.
She had just selected a blue nylon dress with white polka dots — and a price tag of $2. She hid the garment behind other clothes for *****.
“I’ll get it tomorrow, God willing, because I don’t have the money today,” Cerezo explained.
She remembers a time when a teacher would buy “clothes, shoes, electrical appliances” with their yearly bonus.
Nowadays, “it’s not possible.”
A basket of food essentials for a family of four in Venezuela costs about $500 a month, 33 times the salary of a teacher — a profession that has historically been underpaid, but never as little as now.
Cerezo’s family budget is augmented by the salaries of her daughter — also a teacher — and her husband, a lawyer.
– Role models –
An 80-percent drop in GDP over a decade of increasingly repressive rule by President Nicolas Maduro since 2013 has pushed more than eight million Venezuelans — a quarter of the population — to seek a better life elsewhere.
A public sector teacher’s salary is not even among the lowest.
The minimum salary in Venezuela today is $2 a month, which the government supplements with subsidies.
In the private sector, the average monthly income is about $200.
Most public schools today operate only two or three days a week so that teachers can work additional jobs.
Some give private lessons, others drive taxis or sell crafts.
Venezuela’s education system has a deficit of 200,000 teachers, according to the government, and enrolment of student teachers is down nearly 90 percent.
For those who remain in the profession, there is the El Ropero Solidario thrift store in Caracas, run by teacher Kethy Mendoza and supported by the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers.
Much of the merchandise comes from educators, who receive half of the ***** price of an item of clothing — which they can also opt to donate — while the other half keeps the shop running.
“We are role models for the children,” Mendoza, 64, explained of the endeavor, which also aims to help teachers in need of medicines, food and emergency hospital care.
“If we go to school poorly dressed because the economic crisis doesn’t allow us to buy a change of clothes or decent shoes, how can we expect of the pupils to come dressed properly, presentable?”
Maduro, who claimed victory in July 2024 elections that the opposition and much of the international community says he stole, insists low salaries are a consequence of international sanctions.
Experts point to economic mismanagement and corruption in the oil-rich former petro state as other factors.

Aldrich Potgieter powers to lead in Mexico Open
Aldrich Potgieter powers to lead in Mexico Open
Aldrich Potgieter showed his ability to shoot low in the Mexico Open, powering and putting his way to a 10-under 61 that gave the big-hitting South African a four-shot lead going into the weekend at Vidanta Vallarta.
Potgieter chipped in for par after a tee shot into the water on the 10th hole. He failed to birdie two of the shorter par 5s on the back nine. He still had an outside chance at another sub-60 round, having shot 59 on the Korn Ferry Tour a year ago.
Those hopes ended with a tee shot into the bunker on the par-5 18th hole, and an approach that came up short into a bunker. The ball stayed near the lip, making it difficult for him to get the 20-yard bunker shot close. He two-putted from 25 feet for par.
“But it was OK,” he said of the par. “I knew I made a lot of extra birdies throughout the day where that wasn’t going to hurt me.”
Potgieter tied the course record and was at 16-under 126, four shots ahead of Stephan Jaeger (64) and Brian Campbell, who birdied his last hole for a second straight 65.
It was a superb display for Potgieter, who won the 2022 British Amateur at age 17 and last year became the youngest player (19) to win on the Korn Ferry Tour.
“I love the golf course. It definitely suits my game, I think, in a lot of aspects,” Potgieter said. “If I can keep putting well, I think it should be pretty good.”
His power and ball-striking stand out. His putter is what led to the 61, with Potgieter holing seven putts from the 10-foot range or longer. That doesn’t include the 10th, where his tee shot found the water, he came up just short of the green and chipped in from 20 feet for par.
He reached the 661-yard 12th hole in two by hitting driver off the fairway to just over 20 feet.
“I’ve been practising, doing a drill on the driving range with teeing it really low and hitting it really good with the driver that way,” Potgieter said. “I was telling my caddie, ‘Let’s just do the same thing.’ It was a perfect number, so yeah, hit the perfect shot.”
Seven of his drives went 325 yards or longer.
Aaron Rai of England, the highest-ranked player in the field at No.29, had a 64 and was five shots behind.
*********** Aaron Baddeley made a 69 to go with his opening 67 to be six under for the tournament and tied 29th.
Compatriot Karl Vilips shot a brilliant six-under 65 after his opening 74 to make the three-under cut on the line.
Vilips’s round included four consecutive birdies on Nos.12-15 and an eagle on the par-four seventh, when he outdrove the 312-yards hole by four and sunk the coming back putt.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy pleased to have Cameron Munster and Nick Meaney fit for trial against Cowboys
Storm coach Craig Bellamy pleased to have Cameron Munster and Nick Meaney fit for trial against Cowboys
Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has welcomed the earlier-than-expected return of key pair Cameron Munster and Nick Meaney for Sunday’s trial against North Queensland at Casey Field.
Star five-eighth Munster and versatile backline weapon Meaney both had off-season hip injury, and originally weren’t expected to be available for selection until Melbourne’s opening game of the NRL season on March 9 against Parramatta at AAMI Park.
However, the pair are set to receive some game time on Sunday, while another Storm player who had a hip operation, hooker Bronson Garlick, is also likely to play after making his return in last weekend’s 36-10 trial loss to the New Zealand Warriors.
“Last week we wouldn’t have thought that (Munster, Meaney and Garlick would have all been available for Sunday’s match), but they’ve all come through good and they’re all keen to play obviously,” Bellamy said.
“Nick was probably the last one to be ready, and probably didn’t know until midway through this week, but he’s trained really well this week.
“It’s good for them to get a run before round one, which when they had the surgery, we probably weren’t thinking that, so it’s good that those guys firing and fully fit.”
Off-season recruit Stefano Utoikamanu, the 24-year-old prop who joined the Storm from the Wests Tigers, will also play on Sunday.
“He’s been really good. He’s quite fit and mobile for a big guy, so hopefully we can use those abilities and put them into our game,” Bellamy said.
“He’s great to have here. He’s really diligent with his preparation in his training, so hopefully we’ll see the results of his good pre-season (on Sunday).”
Bellamy admitted to being on edge ahead of the Storm’s final pre-season trial.
“You’re always a little bit jumpy. This is the last game before the competition starts, so we’re trying to get a few things right,” he said.
“Hopefully we can have a good trial, and hopefully we can do some things that we’ve practised during the pre-season, and get those things right and go from there.”
In other Storm selection news ahead of round one, star pair Xavier Coates (ankle) and Jahrome Hughes (calf) are expected to be fit to take on the Eels in a fortnight’s time.
Melbourne Storm’s general manager of football Frank Ponissi said: “Xavier is going really well. He’s not training with the team just yet, but he’s been running close to full speed with our rehab staff.
“Jahrome had a minor calf issue over the last week and he’s just getting back to full training. Sunday is probably a bit too early for him to play, so like Xavier, we expect Jahrome to be fully fit for the Parramatta game.”

Maps show NOAA’s spring weather outlook across U.S.
Maps show NOAA’s spring weather outlook across U.S.
As meteorological winter comes to an end, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center has issued its three-month weather outlook, revealing temperature, precipitation and drought expectations for meteorological spring.
NOAA breaks the calendar up into four meteorological seasons. The three-month groups roughly correlate to the four seasons, and are based on temperatures. Meteorological winter runs from December through February. Meteorological spring runs from March through May.
The U.S. also remains under La Niña conditions, which can create unusual weather patterns.
The spring temperature outlook for 2025. / Credit: NOAA CPC
According to the season’s temperature outlook, much of the country is forecast to see warmer-than-average temperatures. The Desert Southwest and Southern Tier are expected to see the greatest increase. Warmer than usual temperatures are forecast to extend into the Northeast and New England. The only region expected to see below-average temperatures is the far Northwest.
The spring precipitation outlook for 2025. / Credit: NOAA CPC
In looking at the precipitation forecast for the next three months, much of the Southwest, Southern Rockies and Southern Plains are set to see well-below-average rain and snow accumulations. These drier conditions are also expected for most of Florida and southern Georgia.
Meanwhile, the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region will see above average precipitation from rain and snow showers. That also means that more clipper systems and lake effect snow events could be possible. This is also the case for the far Northwest, where any incoming system would produce rain and snow.
As for the drought conditions over the next three months, it doesn’t look favorable.
The spring drought outlook for 2025. / Credit: NOAA CPC
Drought conditions in the Northern Plains and Southwest are expected to persist. Meanwhile, new drought developments are likely for parts of the Southern Plains and Florida. The only regions with possible small improvements in drought conditions are along the Great Lakes and the interior New England area.

119-year-old bottle found behind crown above theatre stage
119-year-old bottle found behind crown above theatre stage

Abby Pendlebury, the theatre’s heritage manager, said it was “incredibly thrilling” to find the bottle
A theatre-lover was “astonished” to find a 119-year-old message in a bottle during a special behind-the-scenes tour of Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre.
Mike Hume was on scaffolding 40ft (12m) above the stage when he put his hand in a gap behind an ornate crown decoration and found the century-old bottle.
After months of painstaking effort, experts managed to extract the note from inside and found a list of the people who built the theatre in 1906.
Mr Hume, who is one of the theatre’s donors, was on the tour of its £40m restoration works when he made the find.
The 48-year-old said it was curiosity that caused him to reach behind the crown.
“It really was like a scene out of Indiana Jones,” he said.
“It was a bit damp and there was all this crumbly plaster and stuff in there – then my hand stumbled on this solid object and I pulled out this glass bottle.”

Although the top of the bottle had been dipped in plaster, to keep it sealed, Mr Hume could see a note inside.
Using his phone to photograph the folded-up note he could just about make out the name in handwritten ink – “W S Cruikshank” – the contractor who built the Edwardian theatre.
Theatre bosses were unable to open the bottle after it was found on 6 December so it was sent to specialists who carefully cut the bottom off.

Inside was a note which had become glued together with age, so experts used special techniques and chemicals to prise it apart.
BBC Scotland News asked the genealogy service Findmypast to help uncover the story behind the men who left the note.
The top name on the list was prominent Edinburgh builder William Stewart Cruickshank, who was just over 50 when he embarked on the King’s Theatre project.
He was born in Aberlour in Banffshire and later married Jane Taylor Beck, with whom he had seven children.

Next on the list is the theatre’s head architect, John Daniel Swanston, who was born in Dundee in 1868 and educated at Dollar Academy.
He opened his own architectural practice in Kirkcaldy in 1895 and specialised in theatre, cinema and public house work.
He died in 1956 in Newton Mearns, in the south of Glasgow, at the home of his daughter Dr Muriel Swanston.

John Daniel Swanston was the lead architect
Another architect named in the letter was James Davidson, who was born in Airdrie in 1848, the son of a weaver.
He was educated at Airdrie Academy and initially trained as a joiner but later became an architect.
The third architect was John Tulloch, who was born in January 1847 in East Lothian.
Draughtsman John Alexander Cameron, foreman plasterer George King and foreman William Begg are also listed in the note as well as plasterers John Hutchinson, Andrew S Law and William Hunter.
Extra details found by Findmypast about the men has been handed over by BBC Scotland to the theatre.
Curators will use the extensive research to make a display in an new exhibition room in the theatre along with the bottle and note.

The bottle was sealed with plaster
The King’s Theatre cost £50,000 to build in 1905. The current redevelopment, which started in 2018, will cost £40.7m.
Two lifts are being fitted and staircases widened at The Category A-listed theatre, which is managed by Capital Theatres.
The auditorium is being redeveloped, reinstating the back wall, new control room, upgraded lighting system in the gantry, and a new ventilation system.

Abby Pendlebury, the theatre’s heritage engagement manager, said it was “incredibly thrilling” to find the bottle.
“I think it is fascinating we have a list of plasterers and draftsmen,” she said.
“It’s showing how personal this was to so many people and how there is a real human connection going back. It’s just really beautiful to see.”
She said it was “an absolute fluke find” and the way it had been preserved was “incredibly impressive”.

The bottle was through a hole in the wall behind the crown
“The most magical thing to me is everyone who has ever sat in that auditorium and looked at the stage has seen it and so it’s just been this gem that’s been hiding this whole time,” she said.
“I’m amazed we found it and I am amazed at the list of names.”
Jen Baldwin, research specialist at Findmypast, said: “Unexpected finds like these can offer a fascinating window into the past.
“This was a collection of highly-skilled artisans from a range of backgrounds, who came together to create one of Edinburgh’s most well-loved, iconic creative spaces which has entertained audiences for over a century.”
The theatre is due to reopen in spring 2026.

Injured Storm star may miss Eels’ NRL season opener
Injured Storm star may miss Eels’ NRL season opener
Luckless star Melbourne fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen may not play until their grand-final rematch with Penrith in round three as the Storm prepare to field an undermanned backline for their final NRL trial.
The Storm host North Queensland at Casey Fields in south-east Melbourne on Sunday afternoon as they fine-tune preparations for their round-one clash with Parramatta at AAMI Park on March 9.
Coach Craig Bellamy will look to keep his remarkable record alive of never having lost an opening-round match, with the stretch currently at 21 straight wins.
But Melbourne may have to do it without Papenhuyzen, with Bellamy telling AAP the electric No.1 is in doubt to face the Eels.
With the Storm set for a round-two bye, Papenhuyzen could be put on ice until they host premiers Penrith in round three.
“Paps is probably most doubtful for round one,” Bellamy told AAP on Saturday.
“It’s just a little bit with his ankle and his knee, he’s obviously had some bad injuries.
“There’s nothing too serious but we’ll just wait for things to settle down and get a couple of weeks training under his belt.”
The 26-year-old was named on the bench for the Cowboys but will join halfback Jahrome Hughes (calf), and wingers Xavier Coates (ankle) and Will Warbrick (rested) on the sidelines, although the latter three are slated for round one.
Olympian Moses Leo, who joined the Storm from the New Zealand sevens side, has also been hampered by a quad strain.
“We think Hughesy will be OK (for round one), we think most of those guys (will) but we’ll see what happens,” Bellamy said.
“We’ll look after them as much as we can and if they don’t play round one so be it.
“We’ll give those guys an extra week if they don’t come up round one.”
Melbourne’s biggest off-season signing, former Tiger Stefano Utoikamanu, is set for his second hit-out in Storm colours in the trial.
Bellamy said he’d been impressed by the 24-year-old NSW Origin prop through the pre-season.
“He’s been really good, he’s a real good fella to start with, which is what we like to employ at the club,” the veteran coach said.
“He’s worked really hard and for a big guy, he’s quite mobile.
“He’s just sort of getting a little bit used to the things that we do and the things that we see as important.
“But like I say, he’s put plenty of effort in and we’re real happy with the way he’s going.”
Long-time Melbourne prop Christian Welch announced his medical retirement last week due a chronic back injury and Bellamy said he hoped they could bring another forward to the club.
“It’s a pretty complicated episode, I suppose, with the (salary) cap and with Christian, and how he’s retired.
“I don’t think we’ve got that answer from the NRL yet and I don’t know when we will get an answer, but yeah we’d like to get someone else in, obviously.”

Stock markets may face correction, says Goldman Sachs
Stock markets may face correction, says Goldman Sachs
By Nell Mackenzie
LONDON (Reuters) – Wall Street stocks could be facing a correction because of ructions in the options market, Goldman Sachs specialist Scott Rubner said in a Thursday note seen by Reuters on Friday.
Roughly $2.7 trillion of U.S. stock market derivatives are due to expire on Friday, which if not exercised, will put pressure on stock markets and stoke volatility, the note said.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
S&P 500 and European stock markets hit a record highs on Tuesday but have since declined amid Trump’s latest tariff warning on pharmaceuticals, semiconductor chips and wood, which among other threats, has exacerbated fears of a broad trade war and unnerved investors.
Stock buying might be slowing for other reasons, as well. Retail traders in the U.S. are trading less because they’ll have to pay their annual taxes, and average flows from retirement funds into mutual and exchange-traded funds typically taper in March, Rubner said.
BY THE NUMBERS
About $2.7 trillion of equity options, or derivatives that allow a trader to bet that a stock will reach a certain price, expire Friday, said the Goldman note.
These derivatives include wagers on the S&P 500, as well as U.S. exchange-traded funds and single stocks.
Banks and intermediaries that help put on these bets have over $9 billion of hedges against these trades. These positions have acted as a dampener on volatility, says the Goldman note, “supporting weakness and muting rallies.”
KEY QUOTE
If investors do not return to renew their options bets, then intermediaries also have to unwind their hedges, explains Dan Izzo, founder of the hedge fund BLKBRD Asset Management and a former bank trader.
“That translates as a large momentary pressure. The larger risk is if there’s no one willing to buy that impact, we could see it trigger a larger sell off,” said Izzo.

I make more going live for an hour than one day in the shop
I make more going live for an hour than one day in the shop
Huw ThomasBusiness Correspondent, BBC Wales•huwthomasBBC
Laura Mallows, 33, sells body scrubs and beauty products via TikTok
Laura Mallows knows she is a poster girl for TikTok’s live shopping business.
“I make more in an hour going live, than a day spent in the shop,” she said.
A ***** in online sales prompted Ms Mallows’ decision to close her flagship beauty store in Cardiff, instead selling her company’s body scrubs and skincare through TikTok’s live shopping stream.
But since the popularity of her products surged and hit the shelves in Superdrug and Boots, she is now pursuing her “dream” of opening a real-world shop once more.
Selling on TikTok requires a good product and a personality that attracts buyers to watch live as orders are packed on camera.
The social media platform, which plays host to more than 6,000 live shopping sessions every day, fulfills orders on behalf of sellers.
Anyone using the platform can access training and guides to help them join some of the 200,000 small and medium-sized businesses who are already there.
Mallows Beauty sells its products from a small room in Llantrisant, south Wales, via TikTok
A small room, decorated for a TikTok audience, allows the team behind Mallows Beauty to sell products directly from their office in Llantrisant, south Wales.
“The progress has been wild,” said Ms Mallows.
It’s a process that also attracts instant feedback.
“People will definitely tell me if they think we’re doing something right or doing something wrong.
“And I think the big deal for me is that we’re just in this little office in Wales, and you don’t realise the impact.
“I’ll post videos thinking I’m just posting videos to my friends, and I don’t really think about it – not until you get recognized in New York, and people come up to you and ask for your selfies.”

The ***’s high streets showed a surprising surge in shoppers last month
But despite so many people turning to this new way of buying, the ***’s high streets showed a surprising surge in shoppers last month.
Footfall increased by 6.6% in January compared to the same month in 2024, according to the British Retail Consortium.
It poses a dilemma for sellers like Ms Mallows, 33, who thrive online but also want a slice of real-world shoppers.
Ms Mallows is now once again focussed on opening her own shop.
While her business has boomed on TikTok, the platform has strict rules which prevent sellers from pointing to other platforms and some products are restricted.
Sellers say some words are banned and alluding to a personal website can lead to accounts being suspended.
2025 will be a year of “clicks and bricks” according to Sara Jones from the British Retail Consortium
The ambition to straddle both social media sales and the high street is being watched closely by the British Retail Consortium.
Its Welsh spokesperson, Sara Jones, said 2025 would be the year of “smart shopping” by consumers.
“We’re going to see both clicks and bricks,” she said, with “digital, online and in-store shopping experiences” being offered to shoppers.
“Those retailers that are going to do really well this year are going to be the ones that harness digital technology to encourage people back both to the high street, but alongside their online offering.”
Others are turning to platforms like TikTok shop to sell direct to customers after growth slowed through their existing online and high street outlets.
“It has doubled our sales,” said Shoned Owen, whose fake tan products Tanya Whitebits proved popular since she started selling them live online.

“I think people are craving live content. I attended a workshop in 2024 and it was predicted that live content was going to explode on TikTok during 2025.
“I thought, I’ve got to jump on this trend.”
As well as doubling her sales over the course of the year, Ms Owen said she had to “familiarise” herself with the rules of selling on TikTok.
There are “certain keywords you can’t use, you can’t direct them to your website or other sales channels”, she said, and “you can’t vape, you can’t smoke, there’s no nudity on TikTok”.
Shoned Owen moved to TikTok after faltering sales
Ms Owen still sells through high street shops, and wants to recruit staff to help promote her online sales.
“My long term plan is that I’m looking at recruiting staff,” she said.
“Hopefully there will be employment opportunities for local people, because obviously they’ll have to be local to work in in the TikTok shop – and to do a live.”
TikTok said its live shopping was “like an extension of the brilliance of brick and mortar stores”.
“Through live shopping and shoppable content, TikTok shop allows their products to be discovered by millions and for them to create communities based on human connection in a way that no other online platform can,” said the head of TikTok Shop, Jan Wilk.
He said the platform had a “positive impact on the high street at large” as a “halo effect” often touched businesses who found that products trending on TikTok then became popular in high street stores.
