Suspected overdose ****** in Blissfield leads to search warrant, arrest in Adrian
ADRIAN and BLISSFIELD — A 43-year-old man was arrested Nov. 7, as part of several arrests and investigations being handled by the Region of Irish Hills Narcotics Office.
The arrest of Eric Lee Cooper came during the ********** of a search warrant by RIHNO in the 1100 block of South Main Street in Adrian’s Friendly Village Mobile Home Park. Cooper’s arrest was in support of an overdose ****** being investigated by the Blissfield Police Department, RIHNO communicated in an “activity report” released Tuesday.
During the search, RIHNO located and seized eight firearms and more than 800 grams of ******* along with several other suspected narcotics, officials said.
“It should be noted that Cooper was arrested for the possession with intent to deliver and felony firearm charges,” RIHNO said.
The investigation into the overdose ******, which Blissfield Police responded to on Nov. 7, is ongoing and will be investigated separately.
“Cooper should be assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” said RIHNO, which was assisted by the Blissfield Police Department and the Michigan State Police K9 Unit.

Blissfield Police on Nov. 7 responded to a report of a person found unconscious. That person was identified by law enforcement officials as Paul Jones, 34, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to Blissfield Police Chief Dale Greenleaf, the investigation with RIHNO resulted in “one arrest and the seizure of numerous handguns, rifles and cash.”
“Suspected *******, ******** and fentanyl were also seized with an estimated street value of $100,000,” Greenleaf said in a communication from the police department.
*******/fentanyl carries an ******** street market value of around $100 per gram, RIHNO said. ********’s ******** market value ranges from $70 to $110 per gram and methamphetamine’s is $10 to $20 per gram.
“These values can vary depending on factors like supply availability, geographic location and bulk purchase rates,” RIHNO explained. “For example, while the street value of 1,000 grams of ******* may be around $100,000, a trafficker might acquire the same amount at a bulk price of $70,000 (about $70 per gram).”
A ruling on the cause and manner of Jones’ ****** is pending a complete autopsy and toxicology screening by the Lenawee County Medical Examiner, Greenleaf said.
“The deceased was found in Blissfield. There probably won’t be any updates for a while as this is an ongoing investigation,” Greenleaf added in an email.

Jones, according to his obituary, previously was employed at the Hathaway House and Beckey’s Kountry Kitchen in Blissfield as a cook, Uckele Health and Nutrition, and most recently worked at the Tile Shop in Ottawa Lake. He was described as an avid fan of all the Detroit sports teams and especially enjoyed being outdoors and recently took up kayaking.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at Wagley ******** Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield, 301 S. Lane St. Sharing of memories will begin at 4 p.m. in the ******** home.
Cooper is scheduled to appear before Lenawee County District Judge Laura J. Schaedler at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 for a probable cause conference. He will step before Schaedler a second time at 9 a.m. Nov. 26 for a preliminary examination, according to online court records.
Bond, as of Nov. 10, has been set at $230,000.
Cooper is facing a total of 14 felony charges including eight weapons, felony firearms charges; controlled substance, maintaining a ***** house; weapons, body armor, possession/use by violent felon; weapons, firearms, ammunition, possession prohibited; weapons, firearms, possession by prohibited person; controlled substance delivery/manufacture (narc/********) less than 50 grams; and controlled substance delivery/manufacture (narc/********) 225 to 649 grams.

In case you haven’t noticed, the bulls are firmly in charge on Wall Street. Since 2024 began, the iconic Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI), broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), and innovation-fueled Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) have respectively gained 17%, 26%, and 28% (as of the closing bell on Nov. 13) and ascended to multiple record-closing highs.
A number of factors are responsible for pushing Wall Street’s major stock indexes to new highs, including excitement for the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, stock-split euphoria, and optimism for President-Elect Donald Trump’s second term in the Oval Office.

But when things seem too good to be true on Wall Street, they usually are.

Throughout the year, there have been an assortment of correlative events, forecasting tools, and data points that have warned of potential weakness in the U.S. economy and/or stock market. This includes the first notable decline in U.S. M2 money supply since the Great Depression, the longest yield-curve inversion in history, and the correlative performance of equities when the Federal Reserve shifts to a rate-easing cycle.
However, one historically flawless valuation metric stands head and shoulders above these other tools, and it’s doing something right now that’s only been observed three times in more than 150 years.
Most investors are probably familiar with or rely on the traditional price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, which divides a company’s share price into its trailing-12-month earnings per share (EPS). The P/E ratio provides a relatively quick way to compare a company’s valuation to its peers or the broader market.
However, the traditional P/E ratio also has limitations. Specifically, it doesn’t work particularly well with growth stocks since it doesn’t factor in future growth rates, and it can be easily disrupted by shock events, such as the lockdowns that occurred during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A considerably more encompassing valuation tool, and the metric currently making history, is the S&P 500’s Shiller P/E ratio, also referred to as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio or CAPE Ratio. The Shiller P/E accounts for average inflation-adjusted EPS from the previous 10 years, which smooths out the impact of shock events and allows for apples-to-apples valuation comparisons looking back more than 150 years.

As of the closing bell on Nov. 13, the S&P 500’s Shiller P/E clocked in at 38.18, more than double its average reading of 17.17 when back-tested to January 1871.
But more importantly, the Shiller P/E ratio has reached a reading of 38 only three times during a bull market rally in 153 years. In December 1999, during the dot-com *****, the Shiller P/E peaked at a reading of 44.19. Meanwhile, in the first week of 2022, it very briefly lifted above 40.
What’s noteworthy is what’s happened to Wall Street’s major stock indexes following these prior periods when valuations became very clearly overextended to the upside. The dot-com bubble resulted in a peak-to-trough drop of 49% in the S&P 500 and a considerably steeper decline in the Nasdaq Composite. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite entered respective bear markets in 2022.
Stepping back even further, there have been only six instances since 1871 when the Shiller P/E surpassed 30, including the present. Following each of the five prior occurrences, the Dow, S&P 500, and/or Nasdaq Composite eventually fell between 20% and 89%.
Although the Shiller P/E tells us nothing about when stock market corrections/bear markets might occur, thus far, it has a flawless track record of foreshadowing major moves lower in the stock market.

Based on what history tells us, at some point in the not-too-distant future, we’re going to see a pretty sizable move lower in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite. But if you’re a long-term investor looking to the horizon, history has a message for you, as well: Perspective changes everything.
Over shorter time frames, predicting what the U.S. economy or stock market will do can be tricky, if not downright impossible. For example, recessions are a normal and inevitable part of the economic cycle. No matter how much we cross our fingers and think good thoughts, economic contractions are eventually going to occur.
But here’s the thing about recessions: They’re short-lived. If you take a step back and look at the ******* picture, you’ll see that nine out of 12 recessions following World War II resolved in less than a year, while the remaining three ******* to surpass 18 months in length.
On the other end of the spectrum, two economic expansions have reached the 10-year mark since World War II ended. The point being that the U.S. economy spends considerably more time in the sun than navigating through a storm — but you have to take a step back to see this dynamic play out.
The same holds true on Wall Street.
The data set you see above was posted on social media platform X in June 2023 by the researchers at Bespoke Investment Group. It shows the calendar-day length of every bear and bull market in the benchmark S&P 500 dating back to the start of the Great Depression in September 1929.
As you’ll note from the table, the average S&P 500 bear market decline is only 286 calendar days, roughly 9.5 months. This is consistent with downturns in the U.S. economy resolving quickly.
On the other hand, the average S&P 500 bull market over 94 years has endured for 1,011 calendar days, which equates to around two years and nine months. Including the current bull market rally, just over half (14 out of 27) of all bull markets for the S&P 500 have lasted longer than the lengthiest bear market.
Even though stock market downturns are normal and inevitable, perspective demonstrates just how powerful patience can be for long-term investors.

In September, the Federal Reserve started a new rate-cutting cycle, something the stock market has seen only five other times in the last three decades. Specifically, after raising the federal funds rate to a two-decade high to ****** severe post-pandemic inflation, policymakers finally pivoted to interest rate cuts on Sept. 19.
The federal funds rate is a benchmark that impacts other rates across the economy, such as those for personal loans, credit cards, and mortgages. Policymakers reduce the benchmark rate to stimulate economic growth, which could logically translate into robust stock market returns.

Indeed, the broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and growth-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) have historically performed well during the first 12 months of cutting cycles. That hints at a big move in 2025.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are two of the most popular U.S. stock market indexes. The former is commonly regarded as the best gauge for the overall U.S. stock market because it includes about 80% of domestic equities by market value. The latter is generally seen as a barometer for growth stocks because it is heavily weighted toward the technology sector.
The Federal Reserve has pivoted from interest rate hikes to interest rate cuts five times in the last 30 years. The chart below examines how the S&P 500 performed during the 12-month ******* following the first rate reduction in each cutting cycle.

As shown above, over the last three decades, the S&P 500 returned a median of 10% during the 12-month ******* following the first rate cut in a cycle. We can apply that figure to the current situation to make an educated guess about the coming months.
Specifically, the current cycle began when the Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark rate by a half point on Sept. 19. Since then, the S&P 500 has advanced 2%, leaving implied upside of roughly 8% through September 2025. That roughly aligns with the long-term average, but history says the Nasdaq could deliver more robust returns.
The chart below examines how the Nasdaq Composite performed during the 12-month ******* following the first rate reduction in each cutting cycle over the last three decades.

As shown above, during the last three decades, the Nasdaq Composite returned a median of 22% during the 12-month ******* following the first rate cut in a cycle. Here again, we can apply that figure to the current situation to make an educated guess about the coming months.
Specifically, since the current cutting cycle began on Sept. 19, the Nasdaq Composite has advanced 3%. That leaves implied upside of roughly 19% through September 2025, which is several percentage points above the long-term average of 11%.
One plausible reason for that pattern is the growth-focused nature of the Nasdaq. Growth-stock valuations depend heavily on future earnings, and earnings grow faster when rates are low because companies pay less to borrow money to invest in their businesses.
To be clear, the future profit trajectory of any company improves in a low-rate environment, but growth stocks benefit the most because (by definition) they have the capacity to grow revenue and earnings faster, leading to a larger expansion in valuation multiples.
Investors should remember that each situation is unique, and past performance is never a guarantee of future results. The stock market’s performance in the coming months depends on macroeconomic fundamentals and valuations.
In general, the U.S. economy is in good shape. Inflation is below 3% and should trend lower, the unemployment rate is stable around 4.1%, and ****** domestic product increased at an annualized 2.8% in the third quarter on robust growth in consumer spending, coupled with a modest increase in nonresidential business investments.
Indeed, J.P. Morgan strategist Sarah Stillpass recently commented, “In June, we thought the economy looked to be at its healthiest in decades. Since then, we have seen just that.” A healthy economy should drive strong financial results for the companies in the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite, which could lead to strong returns in both stock indexes.
However, investors should know that valuations are elevated even when accounting for strong future earnings growth. The S&P 500 currently trades at 22 times forward earnings, a premium to its 10-year average of 18.1 times forward. Historically high prices could lead to worse-than-expected returns in the coming months.
Here’s the bottom line: The stock market has seen the Federal Reserve pivot to interest rate cuts only five times during the last 30 years. That change in monetary policy has usually led to solid returns, especially in the growth-focused Nasdaq Composite. But investors should be aware that stocks would likely fall sharply at the first sign of bad news for the economy, simply because valuations are already stretched.

With just a few weeks after the launch of Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6, Treyarch is preparing to drop the game’s first major seasonal update. This update brings a number of brand-new features that promise to shake up everything, including new maps, perks, and score streaks.

As players wait for ****** Ops 6 Season 1, the developers have published the full patch notes before they’re set to go live. While everything looks incredible, Treyarch has nerfed the game’s most popular *******, AEK-973, to oblivion and disappointed everyone.
Treyarch Has Absolutely Destroyed AEK-973 In ****** Ops 6 Season 1
The AEK-973 is an absolute monster of a semi-automatic marksman rifle. It’s a three-round bust and allows you to one-shot ***** from a significant distance. When you combine this ******* with the Rapid ***** mod, it stands as a meta-breaking menace. It’s just too quick for players to respond too.
However, Activision and Treyarch have had enough of players running rampant with AEK-973. In ****** Ops 6 Season 1 patch notes, the developers have revealed that AEK’s recoil penalty has been bumped from 20-25% to 50%, which will make the rifle even more challenging to handle. This is alongside small mobility changes, including a higher sprint-to-***** time.
However, that’s not the end of it. Treyarch is also bringing changes to the Rapid ***** attachment, which will now only buff the ****’s ***** rate by 5%. Its burst delay has also been switched from 115m to 295m. This will increase the TTK, which leads to higher waiting times to deal with a follow-up shot.
The Rapid ***** mod was crucial to any AEK-9743 loadout, and even the developers admit that its benefits were too strong not to be nerfed.
Obviously, the community isn’t happy with these changes. Players have taken to various social media channels to bash the decision, stating that it’s too harsh, and the **** will fall into the abyss with absolutely 0% usage.
All we can do is wait for ****** Ops 6 Season 1 to arrive to see how this nerf impacts AEK-973. It certainly won’t be a top choice in Warzone once the integration happens.

After Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, ****** Ops 6 became the first Call of Duty title to be released on Game Pass, and it’s been a huge success for both Microsoft and Activision so far.
According to the tech giant’s CEO, Satya Nadella, ****** Ops 6 smashed records on launch and became the biggest Call of Duty release ever with a historic number of day one players. The shooter also drew a number of players to Xbox’s subscription service.
Associate Creative Director for Treyarch, Miles Leslie, also revealed that the game’s sales on PlayStation and Steam were 60% higher in comparison to 2023’s Modern Warfare 3.
In the same interview, Leslie also stated that putting the title on Xbox Game Pass had a huge impact. It allowed people who were doubting purchasing the game to give it a try, especially those who haven’t experienced a Call of Duty game in ages.

Biden said in 2023 he would request $US500 million ($A774 million) from the US Congress to support the Brazilian-administered Amazon Fund.
However, by July the US had delivered on just 10 per cent of that pledge.
Trump has called climate change a hoax and plans to roll back much of Biden’s landmark climate legislation to help pay for the extension of tax cuts secured in his first term.
The incoming *********** president also aims to boost record US oil and natural gas production and eliminate rules imposed by Biden to wean gasoline-powered cars off US roads.

Animals Lebanon first discovered Sara on social media channels in July. Her owner, a Lebanese man in the ancient city of Baalbek, posted bombastic videos of himself parading with the little lion cub on TikTok and Instagram.
Under Lebanese law, it is prohibited to own wild and exotic animals.
The lion cub was “really just being used as showing off,” said Jason Mier, executive director of Animals Lebanon.
In mid-September, the group finally retrieved her after filing a case with the police and judiciary, who interrogated her owner and forced him to give up the feline.
Soon after that, ******* launched an offensive against the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah – after nearly a year of low-level conflict – and Baalbek came under heavy bombardment.
Mier and his team were able to extract Sara from Baalbek weeks before ******* launched its aerial bombardment campaign on the ancient city, and move her to an apartment in Beirut’s busy commercial Hamra district.
She was supposed to fly to South ******* in October, but international airlines stopped flights to Lebanon as ******** jets and drones hit sites close to the country’s only airport.
Hezbollah began ******* rockets across the border into ******* in support of its ally, ******, on Oct. 8, 2023, a day after ************ militants staged the deadly surprise incursion into southern *******. ******* responded with shelling and airstrikes. Beginning in mid-September, ******* launched an intense aerial bombardment of much of Lebanon, followed by a ground invasion.
Before the conflict, Animals Lebanon was active in halting animal trafficking and the exotic **** trade, saving over two dozen big cats from imprisonment in lavish homes and sending them to wildlife sanctuaries.
Since the war started, Animals Lebanon has also been rescuing pets that have been trapped in damaged apartments as hundreds of thousands of Lebanese fled bombardment – almost 1,000 over the past month alone.
“Lots are still in our care because the owners of these animals are still displaced,” Mier said. “So we can’t expect the person to take this animal back when he might be living on the street or in a school.”
Before the conflict escalated, the rights group was able to move around the country more freely as the fighting largely remained in southern Lebanon along the border with *******. But things became more difficult as airstrikes became more frequent and spread over wider swathes of the country.
Unaware of the war around her, Sara thrived. She was fed a platter of raw meat daily and grew to 40 kilograms (88 pounds). She cuddled every morning with Mier’s wife Maggie, also an animal rights activist.
But the activists faced a major obstacle: How would they get her out of Lebanon?
Animals Lebanon collected donations from supporters and rights groups around the world to put Sara on a small yacht to take her to Cyprus. From there, she flew to the ******* ***** Emirates before her long journey ended in Cape Town.
Days before her evacuation Sara played in one of the bedrooms at Mier’s apartment, with cushions and chew toys scattered.
Thursday at dawn, she arrived to the port of Dbayeh, just north of Beirut. Mier and his team were relieved, but also struggling to hold back their tears at her departure.
Mier anticipates Sara will be held for monitoring and ********-control, but soon will be part of a community of other lions.
“Then she’ll be integrated with two recent lions that we’ve sent from Lebanon, so she’ll make a nice group of three hopefully,” he said. “That’s where she will live out the rest of her life. That is the best option for her.”

France has trained thousands of Ukrainians for a brigade that’s about to enter the ****** with Russia.
The brigade is set to have French light tanks, artillery, and missile systems.
“Now they are able to ******, they are able to maneuver,” a French colonel told the Associated Press.
A Ukrainian brigade made up of thousands of soldiers trained in France and armed with French-supplied light battle tanks, artillery, and heavy weaponry is about to enter the ****** against Russia.
For more than two months, thousands of troops have been training in eastern and southern France, the Associated Press reported.
A French military task force named Champagne has conducted the training, and more than 2,000 soldiers are undergoing the final parts of training before they return to Ukraine, the AP report says.
The brigade — named “Anne of Kyiv” after a former Kyiv princess who became a queen of France — is expected to eventually have 4,500 members.
It’s also set to have 18 AMX 10 light tanks, 18 truck-mounted Caesar artillery pieces, 128 armored troop carriers, as well as anti-tank and antiaircraft missile systems, according to the French military. France often refers to the AMX-10 as a light tank, but it is widely seen as an armored combat and reconnaissance vehicle.
Before they traveled to France, most of the soldiers had only a few weeks’ basic training, the French military said, according to the AP.
A French colonel told the outlet: “They have improved a lot. Now they are able to ******, they are able to maneuver. They are able to use the different specialists and to use the different equipment they will have on the battlefield.”
The Ukrainian military is also training other troops for the brigade back in Ukraine, French authorities said.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, groups of Ukrainian soldiers have undergone training by Western militaries in locations outside Ukraine.
Partly as a result, Ukraine’s forces are considered significantly better trained than Russia’s, though Russia has military advantages in other areas.
Western intelligence has pointed to Russian troops getting hardly any training before being sent to the front, and Russia’s strategy to win appears to be based on trying to overwhelm Ukraine’s much smaller military through sheer numbers of troops and equipment.
The new Ukrainian brigade is entering the war at a critical time.
Russia has been slowly inching forward in eastern Ukraine as Ukraine calls for more support from its allies. Ukrainian officials have also said that up to 11,000 North Korean troops are now in place to help Russia push back its forces in occupied Kursk.
At the same time, Ukraine is anxiously awaiting US President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to return to the White House in January and has repeatedly criticized the levels of US support sent to Ukraine.
Depending on Trump, the help that Europe is giving Ukraine, such as France training one of its brigades, could become even more critical to Ukraine’s ability to ****** on.

“All my mates are at schoolies at the moment, on the Goldy living it up,” said Hamilton, adding she couldn’t believe what had just happened.
“Going out there today I was just trying to back myself.
“Getting my first wicket and getting 5-fa, all the ****** were getting around me. It was really exciting.
“I’ve had to be patient, played a few games, and it finally came and was really thrilling.”

US to deploy world’s first alien-hunting system equipped with 2D, 3D radars
Just two days after the US whistleblowers said Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs, are real and interacting with humans, the Pentagon has announced the full-time deployment of its new surveillance capabilities to monitor the UFOs.
The Pentagon said in its fiscal 2024 report that the capability, known as Gremlin, will be deployed in the first quarter of FY 2025 to support pattern-of-life analysis.
However, the Pentagon maintained that the aliens don’t exist.
US UFO data
The Pentagon report covers UAP incidents from May 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024.
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) received 757 UAP reports during this *******; 485 of these reports featured UAP incidents during the reporting *******.
The remaining 272 reports featured UAP incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2022 but were not reported to AARO until this reporting ******* and were not included in previous annual UAP reports.
AARO resolved 118 cases during the reporting *******, all of which resolved to prosaic objects such as various types of balloons, birds, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
As of May 31, 2024, AARO has an additional 174 cases queued for closure, pending a final review and the Director’s approval.
As of the publishing date of this report, all 174 cases have been finalized as resolved to prosaic objects, including balloons, birds, UAS, satellites, and aircraft.
Many other cases remain unresolved, and AARO continues collecting and analyzing them. It is important to underscore that, to date, AARO has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology.
None of the reports AARO received during the reporting ******* indicated that observers suffered adverse health effects.
US military aircrews provided two reports identifying flight safety concerns, and three described pilots trailed or shadowed by UAP.
The Pentagon report said that, to date, AARO has no indication or confirmation that these activities are attributable to foreign adversaries.
Gremlin UFO hunting system
The report further details AARO’s efforts to improve its ability to detect, track, and characterize UAP, including more information about the Gremlin sensor architecture, which the office first revealed last year.
The report explains that Gremlin is a network of 2D and 3D radar and long-range electro-optical and infrared telescopes developed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute.
2D radar measures range and azimuth (direction); 3D radar measures the range, azimuth, and elevation of target objects.
The report says that GREMLIN “successfully collected data” during a test in March and will now be deployed at a “national security site” for a 90-day “pattern of life collection.”
The report further states that AARO is developing a new science and technology plan to outline and address “the challenges facing UAP detection and identification, such as a lack of high-quality sensor data and a series of gaps in the scientific knowledge base.”
The Gremlin System was designed, in part, to keep US airspace safe. It isn’t the first UAP surveillance system deployed in the US.
Harvard professor Avi Loeb founded the Galileo Project in 2021, which is developing a network of telescopes and cameras to keep an eye on the sky at all times.

Bangladesh is battling its worst outbreak of dengue in years, with more than 400 deaths as rising temperatures and a longer monsoon season drive a surge in infections, leaving hospitals struggling to cope, particularly in urban areas.
At least 407 people have ***** from related complications in 2024, with 78,595 patients admitted to hospitals nationwide, the latest official figures show.
By mid-November, 4173 patients were being treated – 1835 of them in the capital Dhaka.
“We’re witnessing monsoon-like rainfall even in October, which is unusual,” said Kabirul Bashar, a zoology professor at Jahangirnagar University.
Shifting weather patterns caused by climate change provided optimal conditions for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of the ********, he said.
“These changes in the season are fostering ideal conditions for the mosquitoes to breed.”
Dense populations in cities exacerbate the spread of the ********, usually more common in the monsoon season from June to September although it has spilled beyond that window in 2024.
A rise in temperatures and longer monsoons, both linked to climate change, have caused a spike in mosquito breeding, driving the rapid spread of the virus.
Bashar called for year-round vector surveillance in Bangladesh to monitor and rein in the ********.
If detected early and treated properly, deaths from dengue can be reduced to less than one per cent, renowned physician Dr ABM Abdullah said.
“Early diagnosis and prevention are key to controlling dengue,” he said.
There were 1705 deaths and more than 321,000 infections reported in 2023 – the deadliest year on record in the current crisis.
The growing frequency and severity of outbreaks have strained Bangladesh’s already overwhelmed health-care system, as hospitals battle to treat thousands of patients.
Health officials have urged precautions against mosquito bites, such as mosquito repellents and bed nets, while experts want tougher measures to eliminate the stagnant waters where mosquitoes breed.
Delays in seeking treatment, particularly among rural populations who must travel long distances to specialised facilities in Dhaka, are swelling the toll, doctors said.
The ******** can often show only mild initial symptoms that go undiagnosed until patients are critical.

Fremantle’s AFLW season may be over, but vice-captain Laura Pugh says she is proud of her side despite their finals run coming to an abrupt halt in a 37-point Crows thumping.
The Crows held the Dockers goalless for the first half and allowed the ****** in purple just one major the entire game.
Adelaide’s pressure proved one hurdle too many for a Fremantle side that has leapt many this season, leaving Pugh proud of the group’s accomplishments.

But Pugh said it meant the side found emerging stars that would hold them in good stead moving forward.
“We pride ourselves on the belief in our entire group with those injuries to some of our core team players (missing),” Pugh said.
“It’s been amazing that people have been able to come in like ‘TK’ (Tunisha Kikoak) and ‘Gabba’ (Gabby Biedenweg-Webster) literally a few weeks before the season started and played massive roles.
“I think everyone really stepped up, and it’s a great experience for next year.”
“People coming in and playing massive roles, a new and fresh forward line, same with the midfield — new personnel going through there — and they’ve put in a mountain of work to get their connection and flow, and that’s going to put us in great stead for next year”
“We’ve got a lot to improve on. We’ll have a nice big break and then get ready to go next year.”

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia on Sunday launched a massive drone and missile ******* on Ukraine, described by officials as the largest over the past months, targeting energy infrastructure and ******** civilians.
The ******* came as fears are mounting about Moscow’s intentions to devastate Ukraine’s power generation capacity ahead of the cold winter.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had launched a total of 120 missiles and 90 drones in a large-scale ******* across Ukraine. Various types of drones were deployed, he said, including Iranian-made Shaheds as well as cruise, ballistic and aircraft-launched ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian defenses shot down 140 air targets, Zelenskyy said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.
“The ******’s target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine. Unfortunately, there is damage to objects from hits and falling debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone *******, two people were ******* and six others were injured, including two children,” Zelenskyy said.
Two others were ******* in the Odesa region, where the ******* damaged energy infrastructure and disrupted power and water supplies, said local Gov. Oleh Kiper.
The combined drone and missile ******* was the most powerful in three months, according to the head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration Serhii Popko.
Russian strikes have hammered Ukraine’s power infrastructure since Moscow’s all-out invasion of its neighbor in February 2022, prompting repeated emergency power shutdowns and nationwide rolling blackouts. Ukrainian officials have routinely urged Western allies to bolster the country’s air defenses to counter assaults and allow for repairs.
Explosions were heard across Ukraine on Sunday, including in capital Kyiv, the key southern port of Odesa, as well as the country’s west and central regions, according to local reports.
The operational command of Poland’s armed forces wrote on X that Polish and allied aircraft, including fighter jets, have been mobilized in Polish airspace because of the “massive” Russian ******* on neighboring Ukraine. The steps were aimed to provide safety in Poland’s border areas, it said.
One person was injured after the roof of a five-story residential building caught ***** in Kyiv’s historic center, according to Popko.
A thermal power plant operated by private energy company DTEK was “seriously damaged,” the company said.

Senegal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in legislative elections that the president hopes will give his party a clear majority and the means to implement an ambitious agenda for reforms.
The heated campaign ******* has revived concerns about unrest as political rivals clashed, sometimes violently. The West ******** nation saw some of the worst political ********* in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March.
Polls open at 8 a.m. (0800 GMT) and close at 6 p.m. More than 7 million registered voters will have the chance to vote for candidates for the 165-seat assembly, choosing between 41 registered parties or other entities.
Top priorities for Senegalese voters are jobs and the economy, as inflation has squeezed livelihoods and the nation’s growing youth population struggles to find employment. Many are impatient for change.
The new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised to help, but his government is grappling with slower-than-projected growth and a worsening budget deficit.
In September, a government audit revealed that Senegal’s debt and budget deficit were much wider than the previous administration had reported, causing the fiscal crisis to spiral.
A $1.9 billion IMF programme agreed in June 2023 has been on hold since the discovery.
To implement reforms, Faye’s government is hoping to win a clear majority in the national assembly.
The main threat to his party Pastef’s ambitions is the unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the Republic party (APR) headed by the former Prime Minister Macky Sall.
The race also includes two smaller opposition coalitions. One led by Dakar’s mayor, Barthelemy Dias, has clashed with supporters of Pastef.
A timetable for the results of the vote has not been released.

Piedmont schools in the suburbs of Oklahoma City sent a letter to parents saying they have “‘No plans to change course from our current materials.”
In the letter, the school district said they “acknowledge the significant influence of various religions in world history and culture” but “it is important to clarify that while students learn about religion’s role in historical and cultural contexts, teaching any specific religious doctrine or practice is not a part of the current standards.”

Senegal votes for lawmakers in test for new president

Senegal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in legislative elections that the president hopes will give his party a clear majority and the means to implement an ambitious agenda for reforms.
The heated campaign ******* has revived concerns about unrest as political rivals clashed, sometimes violently. The West ******** nation saw some of the worst political ********* in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March.
Polls open at 8 a.m. (0800 GMT) and close at 6 p.m. More than 7 million registered voters will have the chance to vote for candidates for the 165-seat assembly, choosing between 41 registered parties or other entities.
Top priorities for Senegalese voters are jobs and the economy, as inflation has squeezed livelihoods and the nation’s growing youth population struggles to find employment. Many are impatient for change.
The new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised to help, but his government is grappling with slower-than-projected growth and a worsening budget deficit.
In September, a government audit revealed that Senegal’s debt and budget deficit were much wider than the previous administration had reported, causing the fiscal crisis to spiral.
A $1.9 billion IMF programme agreed in June 2023 has been on hold since the discovery.
To implement reforms, Faye’s government is hoping to win a clear majority in the national assembly.
The main threat to his party Pastef’s ambitions is the unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the Republic party (APR) headed by the former Prime Minister Macky Sall.
The race also includes two smaller opposition coalitions. One led by Dakar’s mayor, Barthelemy Dias, has clashed with supporters of Pastef.
A timetable for the results of the vote has not been released.

*********** Test stars arrive in Perth ahead of crucial first match against India for Border-Gavasker Trophy
Australia’s Test landed in Perth ahead of their highly-anticipated five-match series against India with one goal in mind — to reclaim the Border-Gavasker Trophy for the first time in a decade.
Led by inspirational Pat Cummins, the Test side will spend the next four days preparing for the first Test against powerhouses India at Optus Stadium starting on Friday.
India have won the past four-series between the two cricketing heavyweights, with Australia last winning a series against the sub-continental side in the 2014-15 summer.
But the home nation has never lost a Test at Optus Stadium, including a 146-run win in the first ever game to be played at the Burswood venue nearly six years ago.
Only six players — Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazewood, Usman Khawaja and Travis Head — will pull on the ******* for the Aussies this week that played in that win more than half a decade ago.
South *********** captain Nathan McSweeney will become the 467th recipient of the famed Baggy Green when he makes his debut at the top of the order, having won the highly-publicised battle to partner Usman Khawaja.
McSweeney said he was ready for the bouncy, fast Optus Stadium surface in what could be a baptism of ***** for the new *********** opener.
“I feel like my game suits those conditions and I’m looking forward to preparing this week in the lead-up,” McSweeney told 7NEWS.
The man likely to be waiting at the other end off a run-up is Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who will skipper the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma.

“I’ve been looking at footage over the last couple of seasons, we’re really lucky with the resources we have to try to gain some knowledge of what we might come up against,” he said.

Never write off a champion.
It’s the stern disclaimer West *********** cricket legend Justin Langer is echoing ahead of a Border-Gavaskar Trophy series that looks destined for the history books.
Despite having held the Trophy since 2015 and defeated Australia in Australia in two straight visits, a star-studded India team arrived underdogs on our shores last week.
The fanatical cricket nation is coming off a shock home series clean sweep loss to New Zealand, and talisman Virat Kohli, who is entering what is almost certainly his last Test tour of Australia, is battling through the toughest ******* of his illustrious career.
In his past 10 knocks, Kohli has passed 50 just once, and the critics, including Aussie legend Ricky Ponting, have dissected the megastar’s struggles ahead of the heavyweight series.
But Langer was quick to dispel India’s underdog tag.
“One thing you never do is write off champions, and that’s in every sport, because they are a champion for a reason,” he told The West ***********.
“In India, there are one and a half billion cricket-loving people, and then count all the rest around the world, they expect nothing but excellence, and the team will be under intense pressure, so how they ****** back will be important.
“And they’ll be getting written off for being too old, but people say that all the time, and I just can’t wait to see them play.
“I just hope, if this is the last time (Kohli) is out here, people enjoy it because he is a superstar, so is Rohit Sharma, so is (Ravi) Ashwin, so is (Ravi) Jadeja, so is (Jasprit) Bumrah.
“It’s the same with the Australians; the bowling ******* is a very senior ******* now… so really enjoy it while you can; they are not going to be around forever.”
Kohli has a remarkable affinity for *********** pitches, scoring more than 1300 runs at 54.08 with six centuries in his 13 tests in the country.
However, against New Zealand, Kohli averaged just 15.50.
In ominous signs, the No.4 batter appeared to acclimatise quickly as the squad trained at the WACA in the lead-up to Friday’s series opener.

Langer also warned India will be like a cornered animal when Australia face them in Perth as they begin their quest to make amends for their loss against New Zealand.
“India losing to New Zealand is a bit like North Melbourne beating Brisbane in the grand final at the moment,” he said.
“And not for one millisecond is that disrespect for New Zealand, because they are the great overachievers; they are brilliant. I think they’d won two Test matches (in India), and to win the series 3-0, that’s an amazing achievement.
“They’ve just been beaten three-nil by New Zealand, so India will be humbled by that and equally determined to remedy it because the pressure on them will be intense.”
