  2. Teen Andreeva crowned youngest WTA 1000 champ in Dubai Teen Andreeva crowned youngest WTA 1000 champ in Dubai Mirra Andreeva has become the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 title when the 17-year-old beat Clara Tauson 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final. The precocious Russian, who beat three grand slam champions — Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina — to reach the final, will make her top-10 debut in the rankings next week after Saturday’s landmark victory. “I’d set a goal for myself to be in top 10 by the end of the year. Now it’s the end of February and I’ve already made it, so this is something incredible for me,” Andreeva said. “I’m just super happy with the way I was playing today. I was hella-nervous. I think you could see it during the match with all those double faults, some mistakes. “So I’m just really happy that I could manage and deal with the pressure. And now it just feels amazing… This is something I dreamt of and now my dream came true.” Tauson raced into an early lead on the back of a strong service game while Andreeva made two double faults to quickly find herself 2-0 down but the Russian quickly recovered and began playing her shots, breaking back to level at 2-2. With nothing to separate the pair, the opening set went to a tiebreak. Andreeva has yet to lose a tiebreak this year and she was near-perfect as she won the first six points. Tauson took a medical timeout before the second set and she was frustrated to lose the first game, throwing her racket on the ground. Despite a couple of sublime drop shots from the Dane, Andreeva grew in confidence to take a 4-1 lead. Andreeva, coached by former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, then dictated rallies and began grinding down her opponent, firing winners with emphatic overhead smashes that left Tauson deflated as the Russian teenager went 5-1 up. Andreeva scented victory as she served for the title and sealed it when another Tauson return went long on her second championship point. Andreeva was breaking new ground as only the second teenager — male or female — to win the Dubai event since its inception in 1993, after Rafa Nadal in 2006. “Lastly, I want to thank me for never quitting and always believing in myself,” a beaming Andreeva said after she lifted up the trophy. 3. The creator of My Friend Pedro has a new game on the way, and it looks amazingly weird The creator of My Friend Pedro has a new game on the way, and it looks amazingly weird There’s a lot to take in in the announcement trailer for Shotgun Cop Man: the wide-bodied, thumb-headed protagonist; Satan in the style of Handsome Squidward; a ****** boss with a lethal fart(?) stream; intense, action-heavy platforming with shotgun-based movement. The upcoming new game from DeadToast Entertainment, the solo developer behind My Friend Pedro, looks absolutely unhinged. Its hero’s core mission? “Go to Hell, arrest Satan.” To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Publisher Devolver Digital dropped the trailer on Friday, and while there’s no firm release date just yet, it’s slated to come out sometime this year. The game is described as a “punchy, crunchy, son-of-a-gun precision platformer.” But rather than jumping between platforms, players will rely on shotgun blasts to propel themselves and mow down enemies. The main campaign has about 150 levels, and there will be a built-in level editor so players can create and share custom levels. Shotgun Cop Man will be available for PC and Nintendo Switch once it’s released. You can download the demo from Steam now to get a taste of the action. 4. 1 Cryptocurrency to Buy Right Now With $1,000, and 1 to Avoid Forever 1 Cryptocurrency to Buy Right Now With $1,000, and 1 to Avoid Forever If you’re looking to allocate $1,000 to a cryptocurrency, there’s no reason to throw your money away. That means you’ll need to exercise just a bit of restraint and place your funds in an investment that’s more likely to gain in value over the long term than to be a flash in the pan. Temptations are absolutely everywhere right now. So let’s dive in and nail down which cryptocurrency is worth buying and holding today, and which very popular one is practically guaranteed to light your cash on fire. XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) is worth an investment of $1,000 because it’s the coin with one of the strongest investment theses in crypto right now. XRP is issued by Ripple, a cryptocurrency business. XRP’s business model is to generate a tiny portion of fees for every transaction made on its blockchain. Users are incentivized to make transactions using XRP because it’s fast and cheap, and also because it’s becoming significantly integrated into the global financial system by way of banks and currency exchange houses holding it and using it. Put simply, if a bank in one country wants to transfer funds to a bank in another country, using XRP eliminates currency exchange fees, which can range from 1% to 5% of the total amount being transferred, and international money transfer fees, which can be as pricey as $50 per transaction. Compared to legacy transfer systems like SWIFT, XRP’s transactions close within seconds rather than days. Big differences like these make the coin a no-brainer for companies that can get any kind of return on their capital across that time *******, which drives demand for the coin. The more financial institutions that use XRP, the greater its utility becomes, as there’s less need for banks to swap their tokens for their native fiat currencies. Plus, with the advent of stablecoins on the chain, users of XRP can even avoid some or all of the market risk associated with holding a volatile cryptocurrency. As if that weren’t enough, there are ongoing efforts to launch exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold XRP. These would give investors in the traditional financial sector the opportunity to buy and hold it, thereby driving its price upward. There are even more reasons to buy XRP and hold it for the long term, if you’re so inclined to learn them. But compared to the next coin we’ll discuss, there isn’t much of a contest, so let’s move on. The Official Trump meme coin, which is hosted on Solana with the ticker $TRUMP, is one cryptocurrency to avoid forever — even if it is very tempting to buy it, and even if it might have an edge or two over certain other meme coins. Story Continues As of Feb. 18, the president’s coin has a market cap of $3.2 billion. Near its peak, about 30 days prior, its market cap was $14.8 billion. Now, ask yourself: What is the mechanism by which the price of this coin will ever recover its past heights? There isn’t one. And the longer a timeframe you consider, the bleaker the picture gets. The fantasy that many of the coin’s holders tell themselves is that the president or his team will perform a marketing campaign designed to get more investors to buy it. Alternatively, there is a narrative that if the president can continue to draw attention to himself and to the cryptocurrency bearing his name, new investors will be drawn to buy and hold the coin for the long term as a way of demonstrating their support, or in hopes of offloading their tokens to a “greater fool” somewhere down the line. Buying the coin based on these ideas is not real investing, nor are the odds for success as favorable as simply going to the casino and literally gambling. Compared to a coin with a real investment thesis, like XRP, the case for buying Trump’s coin is nonexistent. So don’t lose your money. Don’t buy this coin — buy XRP and hold it for at least a few years, instead. Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you’ll want to hear this. On rare occasions, our expert team of analysts issues a “Double Down” stock recommendation for companies that they think are about to pop. If you’re worried you’ve already missed your chance to invest, now is the best time to buy before it’s too late. And the numbers speak for themselves: Nvidia: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2009, you’d have $348,579!* Apple: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2008, you’d have $46,554!* Netflix: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2004, you’d have $540,990!* Right now, we’re issuing “Double Down” alerts for three incredible companies, and there may not be another chance like this anytime soon. 7. Man dies from punch after friend refused to buy self-proclaimed gangster a drink Man dies from punch after friend refused to buy self-proclaimed gangster a drink The Brief A man is dead after police say he was punched and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk last week. The suspect, who previously served a 10-year prison sentence, is charged with ******* for throwing the punch. Charging documents say the conflict began when the victim’s friend refused to buy the suspect a drink. MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – A man is charged with ******* and other crimes for allegedly punching another man in Minneapolis last week and causing him to hit his head on the sidewalk, according to court documents. That man, Coby Levan Richardson, 42, from Minneapolis, is now charged with second-degree *******, first-degree manslaughter, threats of violence and fifth-degree assault. He was arrested on Feb. 19, the day after the victim died, and is currently in custody. Minneapolis assault Big picture view Minneapolis police say they responded to the 2500 block of Lyndale Avenue South around 12:20 p.m. on Feb. 15 for a reported assault. Police then found a man who was lying on his back in the parking lot. The criminal complaint states the man was then taken to the hospital to be treated for a facial laceration, a skull fracture and associated brain bleed. The man then died three days later, on Feb. 18, but an official autopsy is still pending. Richardson was arrested the next day. Investigators spoke to another man at the scene, referred to in the complaint as “Victim 2,” who said he was with the man who was hospitalized when they were attacked. The man told police that he and the other victim ran into the suspect in the parking lot, and that he recognized him from a confrontation that happened weeks earlier. According to the criminal complaint, he told police that Richardson said, “I will end you. I am going to kill you,” before punching him in the face. Richardson reportedly then punched the man, who would later die from head injuries. The complaint states the man fell to the ground and hit his head on the cement sidewalk, causing him to lose consciousness. Richardson then left the area in a vehicle. Investigators say video surveillance footage corroborated the report. Richardson is currently in custody at Hennepin County Jail. Previous threats of violence The backstory A witness to the incident, a brother of Victim 2, told police he was inside a vehicle in the parking lot during the assault. The witness then identified Richardson from a six-person lineup as the man who assaulted the other two. The complaint states the witness told police he recognized Richardson from an incident on Jan. 25 when he was having a drink with his brother about four blocks away from the assault. The witness told police Richardson approached them and demanded they buy him a drink. They refused, and Richardson reportedly claimed he was a Gangster Disciple from Chicago who served time in federal prison. The complaint adds that other people with Richardson “looked at the brothers and made trigger-pulling motions with their fingers.” The witness said they felt threatened, so they left. Richardson then reportedly “resumed the conflict” when he ran into the victims on Feb. 15. The Source A criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County. 11. Siemens EQ900 Plus review: the best macchiato I’ve had from a bean-to-cup machine Siemens EQ900 Plus review: the best macchiato I’ve had from a bean-to-cup machine Siemens EQ900 Plus: two-minute review The Siemens EQ900 Plus is one of the best bean-to-cup coffee machines for those who enjoy a latte, cappuccino or macchiato thanks to its excellent milk-texturizing system. It brews a very good espresso, too; but for me, the milk frothing is definitely the standout feature, and easily compares with the results an experienced user can get with a manual steam wand – with none of the effort. Another key selling point of the EQ900 Plus that differentiates it from most of the best coffee makers is the fact that it has two hoppers, which make it easy to switch between different beans or roasts on the fly, or change to decaf in the evening. Some other bean-to-cup coffee makers I’ve tested (models from KitchenAid, for example) have a chute that you use to insert a scoop of ground coffee when you want something different to what’s in the hopper, but this system is more convenient. The only downside is that the hoppers aren’t removeable, plus the extensive set of cleaning and maintenance programs don’t include a function for emptying beans and grounds from the machine, which makes it tricky to purge the system. The Siemens EQ900 Plus is one of the best bean-to-cup coffee machines around when it comes to milk texturizing (Image credit: Future) The machine offers a system called “beanIdent” that lets you describe the beans you’ve loaded into each hopper (including type, roast, and blend) and then adjusts factors including water contact time and grind size to suit. It also encourages you to tinker to achieve the flavor you prefer. There are two customization modes (Comfort and Barista), with support for 10 user profiles. You can even set your preferred drinks as “favorites”, much like the favorites list in your web browser, which is welcome and something I’d like to see in more coffee machines. I appreciate not having to browse through a menu to find my carefully created custom cappuccino setting. The EQ900 Plus encourages tinkering, and Barista mode offers full control over the brewing process (Image credit: Future) The smart cleaning programs are another key selling point of the EQ900 Plus, and bring another point of difference over the standard EQ900. The Plus has a hatch above the milk tank where you insert two tablets – one for cleaning and one for descaling. You’ll be prompted to do this when setting up the machine, and it means you can run a full cleaning cycle whenever the machine needs it without having to hunt around for the necessary supplies or remove the brew unit to add a tab. One of the biggest problems I find with bean-to-cup coffee machines is that the time you save grinding beans and adjusting brew settings is offset by the time spent maintaining the machine, so this smart cleaning is a welcome feature. However, I’m not sure it justifies the price difference between the EQ900 and EQ900 Plus. At the time of writing, the EQ900 Plus is only available for the full list price of £2,199 (about $2,800 / AU$4,300), whereas the standard EQ900 can be found for as little as £1,300 (about $1,600 / AU$2,600) on *****. Siemens EQ900 Plus: price and availability List price £2,199 (about $2,800 / AU$4,300) Not widely available outside Europe Can be found more cheaply if you shop around The Siemens EQ900 Plus launched in October 2023, and has a list price of £2,199 (about $2,800 / AU$4,300) – although note that it isn’t widely available outside Europe. That puts it firmly at the top end of the price bracket for home bean-to-cup coffee makers, at about the same price as the Breville Oracle Touch (or Sage Oracle Touch, as it’s known in the ***). The EQ900 Plus definitely feels like a premium machine with its stainless steel build, huge color touchscreen, smart cleaning, and advanced customization options. However, for a more affordable version consider the standard Siemens EQ900 (without the automatic maintenance system), which has a list price of £1,799 (about $2,300 / AU$3,600) and can be found for as little as £1,300 (about $1,600 / AU$2,600) if you shop around. There’s also a version of the EQ900 with a single hopper, priced at £1,599 (about $2,000 / AU$3,200), which may be preferable if you only enjoy one specific bean. Personally, I appreciate having the choice. You’ll find all of today’s best prices for the Siemens EQ900 Plus below. Siemens EQ900 Plus: specifications Swipe to scroll horizontally Name Siemens EQ900 Plus Bean to Cup Coffee Machine Type Bean-to-cup Dimensions (W x H x D) 15.4 x 12.4 x 18.5in / 39.2 x 31.5 x 47cm Weight 30.4lbs / 13.8kg Water reservoir capacity 81oz / 2.3L Milk frother Yes (automatic) Bars of pressure 20 Noise level 45dB (average) User profiles 10 Siemens EQ900 Plus Premium brushed metal build Two bean hoppers Intensive self-cleaning system Cleverly designed milk system The Siemens EQ900 Plus is a premium bean-to-cup coffee machine with a brushed stainless steel case and a huge 6.8-inch full-colour touchscreen. It’s the most impressive display I’ve seen on any coffee maker I’ve tested so far, and is even capable of displaying smooth animations (when you’re not using it to swipe through the drinks menu and tweak the various beverages to your liking). At the top you’ll find two hoppers that you can fill with two different types of coffee beans. Some other coffee machines I’ve tested (the KitchenAid KF6 and KF8, for example) come with a chute to which you can add a scoop of pre-ground coffee if you fancy a change, but this twin-hopper system is even better. Some coffees (such as those with notes of caramel) are well suited to milk, while fruitier beans work better ****** – with this system you can choose the best one for your drink on the fly. You could also keep one hopper full of regular beans for the morning, and the other full of decaf for after lunch. A blue light will illuminate when one of the hoppers needs refilling. Image 1 of 2 The machine has two bean hoppers so you can switch between different types and roasts on the fly(Image credit: Future) A blue light warns you when a bean hopper is empty(Image credit: Future) The EQ900 Plus’s water tank is hidden on the left of the machine, and can be lifted out for filling using the integrated handle. It has a generous 2.3-liter capacity, and can be fitted with an optional filter to reduce limescale build-up to improve the taste of your coffee. Note that there’s no transparent panel, though, so you can’t see the current water level at a glance. Milk is stored in a smaller tank that sits on the right, just underneath containers for descaling and cleaning tablets. It’s unusual for a coffee machine to keep descaling and cleaning tablets on-board, but it makes sense and means you don’t have to hunt around for the packet when it’s time for regular maintenance. This is the EQ900 Plus’s main point of difference with the standard EQ900. Removing the water tank and side panel lets you access the brew unit for rinsing (Image credit: Future) Most fully automatic espresso machines have a separate container for milk that sits beside the machine. Here, a tank slots into the side of the chassis, delivering a much neater design. The lid means you can also keep your milk in the fridge between uses. The drip tray slides out easily for cleaning, with a removable grille at the front and a slim section at the back that makes pouring clean and convenient. Used coffee pucks are dispensed into a bin that sits in the drip tray and can be lifted out for easy emptying. Siemens EQ900 Plus Eight coffee profiles, plus two milk and two hot water Coffee presets are easy to customize and save to your profile Excellent milk frothing Espresso is good, but crema not as stable as some Some automatic coffee machines present customization as an optional extra, but it’s at the heart of the experience here. There are two control options, Barista and Comfort, depending on the degree to which you want to tweak your beverages; but all users are encouraged to tinker with their drinks to create something bespoke. The EQ900 Plus offers two modes of operation: Comfort and Barista (Image credit: Future) Barista mode offers the most control, allowing you to choose whether beans are taken from the left or right hopper, choose the correct cup size, and tweak the strength (1-9), grinding level (1-6), contact time (for instance, how long the water is in contact with the grounds), milk ratio, and brewing temperature. Comfort mode is simpler and designed for more casual coffee fans, only letting you set the aroma (mild, balanced, or distinctive), strength (light, normal, strong, or extra strong), and cup size. Once you’ve created a custom drink (which is easy thanks to the sensitive touchscreen), you’ll be prompted to save it to a profile (the EQ900 Plus supports up to 10, so everyone in your household and their guests can create their own) and give it a name. Typing on the EQ900 is surprisingly easy; the screen is large enough to accommodate a full QWERTY keyboard, making the whole experience much less frustrating than it could be. You can even choose a background color, so you can see at-a-glance whether your profile is the one selected, and save your most frequently made drinks to a favorites menu, accessible via a quick tap of the star button under the screen. Preset drink options include: Espresso Espresso doppio Caffe crema Caffe grande Caffe XL Cappuccino Latte macchiato White coffee Foamed milk Warm milk Hot water (enough for a cup of tea) Coffee pot (a larger amount of hot water for pour-over) The crema wasn’t quite as thick as that created by the KitchenAid K6, which is a cheaper machine, and it didn’t last as long either, despite being brewed using the same beans (purchased fresh that day). However, milk texturizing was impressive, with the Siemens EQ900 quickly turning whole dairy milk into a generous layer of long-lasting foam. A powerful jet of steam creates the perfect foundation for your cappuccino or latte macchiato. You can slide the dispenser up and down easily, and unlike many bean-to-cup coffee makers, it’s easy to remove it for cleaning – just pull it towards you to detach it, then disassemble the components and wash them all with warm water and dish soap. Once done, push it back into place. During testing, I found the water tank a little awkward to refit when filled to the maximum mark; you have to position the bottom of the tank, then align the top while also folding the handle down. The water tank and milk container are also tricky to clean and dry inside, since there’s very little space for your hand. The machine has a cleaning setting that removes all water from the interior, but you’ll still need to thoroughly hand-dry the tanks before transporting or storing the machine. You’ll receive a warning when it’s time to empty the drip tray, but not necessarily when the coffee grounds bin is full (Image credit: Future) The machine notified when the drip tray was full, but didn’t push out an alert to inform me that the used coffee grounds required emptying. Most bean-to-cup machines deliver a warning after making about four drinks, but that wasn’t the case here, and I ended up with some grounds stuck to the area above the drip tray when I pulled it out. It’s a minor flaw, but a surprising one for a premium machine. The beanIdent system is interesting, and lets the machine adjust its own settings to suit your two different beans so it can determine the optimum setting for each one. Once you’ve loaded the two hoppers, you tell the EQ900 Plus the type of bean you’ve chosen for each one (arabica or robusta), the roast (light or dark) and the blend, and it will set factors including grind size and water temperature automatically. Of course, your preferences may be different from those of the engineers and experts at Siemens, so you can tweak these settings to suit your tastes. Nevertheless, they provide a very useful starting point. Should you buy the Siemens EQ900 Plus Swipe to scroll horizontally Siemens EQ900 Plus score card Attribute Notes Score Value A premium machine with a price to match, but I don’t think it does enough to justify how much more expensive it is over the standard EQ900. 3/5 Design Dual bean hoppers are a real selling point, and the machine is refreshingly easy to clean; but the water tank can be fiddly to wash and insert. 4/5 Performance Brews a very good espresso (although I find the KitchenAid K8 slightly better), and is unbeatable when it comes to milk texturizing. 4.5/5 Buy it if Don’t buy it if Siemens EQ900 Plus: also consider Not totally sure that the Siemens EQ900 Plus is the right coffee maker for you? Here are two other bean-to-cup machines to consider: How I tested the Siemens EQ900 Plus I tested the Siemens EQ900 Plus using fresh coffee beans from local coffee shops Mokoko and Clifton Coffee (one in each hopper), and chilled whole milk. I used each of the machine’s preset drink options, experimenting with settings in Comfort and Barista mode, and creating a custom profile. I also ran all of the machine’s basic and intensive cleaning programs, washed and dried the dispenser, milk tank and water tank, and ran the frost protection program to remove water from the machine’s internal circuits. 12. The IRS is firing thousands of workers. Will it affect your tax refund? The IRS is firing thousands of workers. Will it affect your tax refund? (NEXSTAR) – With the IRS laying off thousands of employees Thursday, many Americans may be wondering if their tax returns — or their refunds — will be affected. A government official who asked to remain anonymous confirmed news of the IRS culling 6,700 employees to Nexstar’s NewsNation. It represents the latest mass termination amid an ongoing purge of federal workers by the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE. “If you asked me a month ago if the IRS would reduce their staffing, I would say yeah, I think it’ll happen, but probably not until April 16 (the day after tax season ends),” tax expert Adam Brewer, of AB Tax Law, told Nexstar. “Practically speaking, it doesn’t make any sense, but here we are.” The firings are happening despite IRS employees involved in the 2025 tax season being told earlier this month that they would not be allowed to accept a buyout offer from the Trump administration until mid-May, after the taxpayer filing deadline. A tax credit worth up to $7,830 often goes unclaimed: See who qualifies It’s not entirely clear how dismissing nearly 7,000 of the roughly 90,000 IRS workers will affect the filing process, but Brewer has been advising clients to safeguard themselves by doing the following: File and pay any owed taxes electronically Make sure your refund can be deposited directly Take care to make sure the return is accurate and complete If you need to request payments by installment, do so online “If you send in a paper return, at a minimum someone at the IRS has to be there to open the envelope, and we saw in the pandemic that doesn’t get done when they get really far behind,” Brewer said. “We’ve had situations where people send in payments, they never get cashed, and all of a sudden there’s additional penalties and interest.” Taxpayers can check the status of their refunds using the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? tool and via the IRS2GO app. Who was fired? The layoffs affect probationary employees with roughly one year or less of service at the agency and largely include workers in compliance departments, according to the person, who was not authorized to disclose the plans and spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday. Compliance work includes ensuring that taxpayers are abiding by the tax code, filing their returns and paying their taxes, among other duties. Vanessa Williamson, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said on a Thursday call with reporters that the layoffs at the IRS will disproportionately harm enforcement efforts. “When you underpay and understaff the IRS, the agency doesn’t have the power or the resources it needs to go after wealthy tax evaders with their high priced lawyers,” she said, adding, “The result is, of course, a disaster for revenue.” The layoffs are part of the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to shrink the size of the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency by ordering agencies to lay off nearly all probationary employees who have not yet gained civil service protection. In addition to the planned layoffs, the Trump administration intends to lend IRS workers to the Department of Homeland Security to assist with immigration enforcement. In a letter sent earlier this month, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to borrow IRS workers to help with ongoing immigration crackdown efforts. 14. Leading contenders make their final appeals to ******* voters before a landmark election Leading contenders make their final appeals to ******* voters before a landmark election Angela Merkel with CDU Friedrich Merz in 2001. Ullstein Bild | Ullstein Bild | Getty Images The contenders in Germany’s election made their final appeals to voters Saturday, with opposition leader and front-runner Friedrich Merz vowing to revive the stagnant economy and defend Europe’s interests in the face of a confrontational U.S. administration. Chancellor OIaf Scholz, meanwhile, insisted that he still hopes for an improbable last-minute comeback. Germans are electing a new parliament Sunday after a campaign focused on the state of Europe’s biggest economy and calls to curb migration, while uncertainty has grown rapidly about the future of Ukraine and the strength of Europe’s alliance with the United States. It appears to have done little to shift parties’ position in polls. They have consistently shown the center-right opposition, main challenger Merz’s Union bloc, in the lead. It’s ahead of the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany, which is on course for the strongest result for a far-right party since World War II, but has no other party willing to go into government with it. Scholz’s center-left Social Democrats have shown little sign of coming back from a large poll deficit after the chancellor’s three-party coalition collapsed in November following a long-running argument about how to revitalize the economy. That led to the election being held seven months ahead of schedule. At a closing rally in a Munich beer hall, Merz told supporters that “three years in opposition are enough.” Germany is a traditional leader of the 27-nation EU and the bloc’s most populous member, but like fellow heavyweight France has been consumed in recent months by domestic instability. Merz said that “with me, Germany will have a strong voice in the European Union again.” “Europe must be a player and not ask maybe to get a seat at a side table,” he said. “No, we must sit at the main table; and we must safeguard our interests against Russia, against China, and if necessary also with respect to America.” “Anyone who shows up there as a dwarf is treated as a dwarf and sent home as a dwarf,” Merz added. He said, however, that “we will only gain respect in this European Union again if … we finally overcome our country’s economic weakness.” He said that was “overwhelmingly homemade.” Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appear on screen during a central election campaign event of the AfD in Halle (Saale), Germany, January 25, 2025. Karina Hessland | Reuters Merz also underscored his calls for a tougher stance on migration, which created friction in recent weeks. Last month, he brought a nonbinding motion calling for many more migrants to be turned back at Germany’s borders to parliament. The motion was approved thanks to votes from Alternative for Germany, or AfD — a first in postwar Germany that prompted opponents to accuse Merz of breaking a taboo. He rejects the criticism. “We will under no circumstances discuss any talks, never mind negotiations or a participation in government, with AfD,” Merz said Saturday. At an event in Potsdam, which he represents in parliament, Scholz again cast doubt on Merz’s reliability and portrayed his party as the strongest bulwark against AfD playing any role. “Anyone who wants to be sure this doesn’t happen must ensure that there are strong Social Democrats and that they can provide the next chancellor,” Merz said. On the sidelines of an earlier event in Potsdam, Scholz said that he was “convinced that, this time, many people will only make their decision at the polling station.” “I don’t believe in miracles, but in an election victory,” he said, ******* news agency dpa reported. If Merz does win, it’s unclear whether he will be able to put together a two-party coalition or need a third partner, a more awkward prospect. “If we govern, we need few partners and not an endless number of them,” senior conservative ally Markus Söder said in Munich. 16. BMW delays electric Mini over ‘uncertainty’ BMW delays electric Mini over ‘uncertainty’ BMW has confirmed it is delaying the introduction of battery-electric vehicle production at its Oxford Mini plant. The vehicle manufacturer said “multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry” had led to its decision. It said it had decided not to accept a related grant from the government but remained in “close dialogue”. The *** automotive industry has been in a long-running debate with the government over its targets for electric vehicle production. Car makers have argued that the number of electric vehicles they are expected to sell in this and coming years is too high. Earlier this year, the government ran a fast-track consultation on changes to this policy, known as the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate. Last November, Stellantis cited the mandate as one of the reasons it decided to close its van factory in Luton. A statement from Mini owner BMW said: “Plant Oxford is at the heart of Mini production, manufacturing and exporting a range of models, which are sought after in the *** and around the world. “However, given the multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry, the BMW Group is currently reviewing the timing for reintroducing battery-electric Mini production in Oxford.” It said much of the investment was progressing, with construction “well under way to make the plant future-ready”, including a project to build new “state-of-the-art logistics facility”. The statement added: “We have informed the *** government of our decision to review the timeline for reintroducing battery-electric production in Oxford. “As part of this discussion, we agreed not to take the previously announced grant, but we remain in close dialogue about our future plans.” In 2023, BMW announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds to prepare the Mini factory in Oxford to build a new generation of electric cars. Production of two new electric Mini models had been due to begin at the plant in 2026. The Department for Transport (DfT) said it recognised the challenges car manufacturers were facing and was listening to concerns. It said it was consulting on “reinstating the 2030 electric vehicle deadline while also protecting jobs”, a decision it said was “supported by a majority of manufacturers who have been working towards this date and are on track to meet their ZEV mandate targets”. The DfT said it was investing more than £2.3bn to support industry and consumers to make the switch to electric. 17. If Elon Musk Can Fire Hundreds Of Thousands Of Federal Employees, Imagine What He’ll Do To Private Sector Workers If Elon Musk Can Fire Hundreds Of Thousands Of Federal Employees, Imagine What He’ll Do To Private Sector Workers Bernie Sanders Warns: If Elon Musk Can Fire Hundreds Of Thousands Of Federal Employees, Imagine What He’ll Do To Private Sector Workers Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has a warning for workers across America: If Elon Musk can fire hundreds of thousands of federal employees without cause, private sector workers could be next. In a recent post on X, Sanders put it bluntly: “Today, it’s federal workers. Tomorrow, it’s *your* job. That’s what oligarchy is about.” Sanders has long criticized the growing influence of billionaires in politics and the economy, but he says Musk has made it clearer than ever. In an interview with Brian Tyler Cohen, Sanders argued that Musk’s power goes beyond business—he’s now shaping government itself. Don’t Miss: “Everybody has got to understand this is the wealthiest guy in the world right now, worth over $400 billion,” Sanders said. “Musk put over $270 million into Trump’s campaign and guess what? He’s now the most important person in government. What does that sound like to you? Does that sound like a democracy… or is it really an oligarchy doing the bidding of the very richest people?” Sanders pointed to Trump’s budget priorities, which include massive tax cuts for the wealthy while slashing programs like Medicaid, student aid, and other critical support for working families. He sees it as part of a larger strategy where billionaires get richer while everyday Americans struggle. “The end goal of oligarchy is to make the richest people who are already phenomenally rich even richer,” Sanders explained. “How do you do that? You give them massive tax breaks. And where do you get the money? You cut programs that working people need.” Trending: The average American couple has saved this much money for retirement — How do you compare? Musk’s influence extends far beyond government decisions. Sanders argues that billionaires like Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg control not just politics but also the media landscape. “They will use their enormous media operations they own to deflect attention away from the impact of their policies while they entertain us to death,” Sanders said in a video posted on X. And for those who think these billionaires care about workers? Sanders doesn’t buy it. “Do you think for one second that the oligarchs give a damn about working people? Trust me, they don’t.” Story Continues He pointed to Musk’s role in dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development, a move that he says will leave thousands of people around the world without food and healthcare. “They will sacrifice, without hesitation, the well-being of working people to protect their interests.” See Also: Elon Musk Told The U.N. If They Could Show A Plan For Ending World Hunger He’d Donate $6 Billion – ‘I Will Sell Tesla Stock Right Now And Do It’ So what’s the solution? Sanders calls for unity among workers of all backgrounds—******, white, Latino, urban, rural, young, old—to fight back against billionaire control. “The oligarchs’ nightmare is that we will not allow ourselves to be divided up… and that we’ll together have the courage to take them on.” Sanders’ warning comes as the Trump administration, with Musk’s influence, has begun a sweeping purge of federal employees. More than 9,500 workers across departments like Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Interior, Health and Human Services, and Energy have been fired. Another 75,000 have taken a buyout, representing 3% of the 2.3 million civilian workforce. Many of the job cuts have targeted probationary employees with fewer protections. The Trump administration claims these cuts are necessary to curb government waste, but Democrats argue they overstep Congress’s authority on federal spending. 19. Links to Rwanda fuel discrimination Links to Rwanda fuel discrimination Wedaeli Chibelushi BBC News Getty Images Tutsis have long been advocating for better treatment in DR Congo The notorious M23 rebel group is wreaking havoc in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, seizing the region’s two biggest cities in a deadly uprising which has forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. Central to their campaign is the assertion that ethnic Tutsis living in DR Congo are being persecuted. Digging into the status of Tutsis in DR Congo – and how it relates to the M23 uprising – is a complex and sensitive matter that goes to the heart of who is considered Congolese. For starters, many global authorities argue that in their purported fight against discrimination, the rebels have committed unjustifiable atrocities. The UN and US, for instance, have sanctioned M23 leaders over allegations of war crimes, such as ******* violence and the killing of civilians. Secondly, some regional analysts say that rather than seeking to defend Tutsis, the M23 – and Rwanda, which backs the rebel group – is primarily seeking to exploit the eastern DR Congo’s vast mineral wealth. It is also worth noting that there are thought to be hundreds of thousands of Tutsis in DR Congo – there is no official estimate – and many do not support the actions being carried out in their name. That being said, experts and organisations like the UN have documented decades of discrimination against Congolese Tutsis and the Banyamulenge – a Tutsi sub-group concentrated in the South Kivu province. This ranges from ethnic killings, to workplace discrimination, to hate speech on the part of politicians. At the root of this discrimination is the association of Tutsis with neighbouring Rwanda, which has been led by Tutsis since 1994. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, many Congolese Tutsis played a key role in violent Rwandan-backed rebellions against the governments then running DR Congo. The perception that Congolese Tutsis are “foreign” can have deadly consequences. Bukuru Muhizi, a researcher and economist from South Kivu’s Mwenga territory, told the BBC that people from various generations of his family had been killed because of their Banyamulenge and Tutsi identities. He said that in the past six years, his great-uncle and great-uncle’s son were killed by Congolese soldiers and local militia fighters. The Congolese armed forces have not responded to the BBC’s request for comment on this allegation. Mr Muhizi said his family has lived in present-day DR Congo for centuries and that he “wished the world knew” his community was experiencing what he called a “silent genocide”. Muragwa Cheez Bienvenue, a Banyamulenge activist, said he was once targeted by airport staff in the city of Bukavu. “I was stopped – they told me I look like [Rwandan President] Kagame and they had me pay around $150 (£120) to save myself from being imprisoned,” he told the BBC, adding that he supports the M23’s cause. Bukuru Muhizi Bukuru Muhizi belongs to the Banyamulenge sub-group, who took their name from the Mulenge locality where they first settled in DR Congo Prior to colonisation, part of the territory that is now DR Congo was subject to the Rwandan monarchy, which is Tutsi. It had long been fighting expansionist wars, extending the kingdom to include more and more of East Africa. Tutsis, Hutus and other ethnic groups lived in the Rwandan kingdom and had done so since at least the 19th Century. But when colonial powers drew up arbitrary borders in Africa, the kingdom was split between present-day DR Congo and Rwanda. Subsequently, other Tutsis have migrated to DR Congo in waves. In the mid-20th Century, Belgian colonialists brought workers over from present-day Rwanda to staff their plantations, while others came on their own accord in search of a better life. Meanwhile, Tutsi refugees began arriving in DR Congo, fleeing waves of ethnic violence in Rwanda and Burundi. Both countries have long been dominated by their Tutsi minorities, leading to tensions with the Hutu majority. Many more are thought to have arrived in 1994 during the Rwandan genocide, in which some 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis, were slaughtered. But when a Tutsi-led government seized power and ended the massacres, some returned, especially after some of those responsible for the genocide then fled into DR Congo. As DR Congo’s Tutsi and Banyamulenge communities grew, the Congolese authorities “alternately empowered and the undermined” them, Jason K Stearns, a DR Congo analyst, wrote in his book The War That Doesn’t Say Its Name. In the early 1970s, then-President Mobutu Sese Seko granted citizenship to anyone who had originated from Rwanda or Burundi, provided they were present on Congolese territory before 1960. But in 1981, parliament rowed back on these rights and many Tutsis, Banyamulenge and people from other ********* groups were “derived of their nationality and left stateless”, a UN report noted. In the 1990s, Tutsis and the Banyamulenge were subject to multiple massacres in DR Congo. For instance, a report by the UN says that the Congolese army aided armed groups in killing nearly 300 Banyamulenge civilians in the city of Baraka in 1996. It also states that “many” Tutsis and Banyamulenge lost their jobs and suffered discrimination and threats. Today, the constitution considers the Tutsi and Banyamulenge groups to be Congolese and some individuals from these communities occupy senior military and governance positions. In fact, Lt-Gen Pacifique Masunzu, the man leading the fight against the M23 as the commander of a key area in eastern DR Congo, is from the Banyamulenge community. AFP M23 fighters have seized the two biggest cities in eastern DR Congo But there is still significant evidence of discrimination. In 2024, experts working for the UN said that in South Kivu, Banyamulenge are commonly seen as harmful to their neighbouring communities. This discourse incites “hatred, discrimination, hostility and violence”, the experts said. There have also been recent reports of Tutsi and Banyamulenge soldiers in the Congolese army being murdered. According to Human Rights Watch, a mob killed a Banyamulenge military officer in 2023 “in an apparent case of ethnic hatred”. Politicians – past and present – have also pushed discriminatory sentiment. Anti-Tutsi feelings appear to rise during M23 rebellions, say DR Congo experts such as Mr Stearns. He told the BBC he had seen “pretty terrifying” social media posts over the past few weeks – “a phenomenon of people in other parts of the country expressing doubts over a certain person, often an army officer or police officers… the way he looks, and claiming that certain people look like they’re Rwandan”. Although some Congolese Tutsis may back the M23’s current uprising, Mr Stearns says “many of them feel uncomfortable with the consequences this will have for them as a community, because once again, this means that they will be portrayed as treasonous rebels”. The Congolese government has gone some way in acknowledging the discrimination against Tutsis. For instance, earlier this year President Félix Tshisekedi said he had “had enough” of anti-Banyamulenge speech and alleged that such comments gave Rwanda the pretext to invade DR Congo. However, the authorities have also played down allegations of widespread persecution. Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya told the BBC: “We have 450 tribes and there is conflict between some of them in many parts of the country… The government position is against any kind of discrimination or hate speech against every community”. However, Mr Bienvenue on the other hand told the BBC he “strongly” believes his ethnic group are discriminated against, giving the example that his sister was once sacked after being told she “looked like a Rwandan spy”. This is despite his family living in the same area for centuries. “The Banyamulenge have been here since Congo was Congo!” he said, exasperated. 24. 2 Top Quantum Computing Stocks to Buy in 2025 2 Top Quantum Computing Stocks to Buy in 2025 Quantum computing could be the next big thing in tech after artificial intelligence (AI). However, it will take many years before the market really takes shape and practical uses for quantum computing develop. Still, quantum computing could be worth an estimated $840 billion in the next 15 years, according to Boston Consulting Group, and that’s simply too big a market for investors to ignore. If you want ideas about which stocks to buy now and hold for the long haul, here are two companies where quantum computing could eventually move the needle. Image source: Getty Images. Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), Google’s parent company, has been invested in quantum computing for years, but it recently made an advancement that positioned it as a standout company in the space. Alphabet introduced Willow, a new quantum computing processor it believes is a big step forward. Alphabet said Willow achieved a benchmark computation in just five minutes, which would have taken a traditional supercomputer more time to complete than the age of the universe (you can’t make this stuff up). To be fair, the benchmark is for quantum computers, not traditional computers. The point is that Willow is very fast, even among quantum computing chips. Not only is Willow good at quantum computing processing, but it’s also less inclined to make mistakes than other processors. The company said in a blog post that Willow can “reduce errors exponentially” and the chip “cracks a key challenge in quantum error correction that the field has pursued for almost 30 years.” In short, it’s potentially better at completing quantum computing processing than its competitors. Alphabet’s impressive progress with Willow could give the company an advantage over quantum computing rivals in the near future, but one thing that really makes it a good stock to buy right now is that its shares are priced well. Alphabet’s stock has a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of just 21, compared to the S&P 500’s 24. This makes Alphabet’s stock relatively cheap at a time when the company is making significant quantum computing advancements. And with Alphabet’s hands in much more than quantum computing — including advertising, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing — you can hedge your quantum computing bet with other opportunities with just one stock. IBM (NYSE: IBM) may not be at the top of your must-have hot stocks right now, but there are some compelling reasons why this tech stalwart could be a solid long-term quantum computing winner. First, the company has been in this space for years, developing quantum computers and related software. It already has partnerships with large corporations to use its computers in healthcare, finance, and other sectors. Story Continues In late 2023, IBM introduced its Condor processor, the world’s first 1,000-qubit quantum chip. The company is on track to release a “fully error-corrected” quantum computer by 2029. That would be a huge step forward and make real-world use cases for quantum computing much more feasible. Unlike some competitors, IBM has a size advantage. The company generated $17.6 billion in sales in the fourth quarter (which ended Dec. 31) and $3.92 in non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) earnings per share. It also had $12.7 billion in free cash flow for the full 2024 year.
