Pope suffers respiratory attack, condition critical: ********
Pope Francis’s condition “continues to be critical”, the ******** said Saturday, saying the 88-year-old was alert but had suffered a respiratory attack that required “high-flow oxygen”, and also blood transfusions.
“At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” it said, as the head of the Catholic Church prepared to spend his ninth night in Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was diagnosed this week with double pneumonia.
“The Holy Father’s condition continues to be critical, therefore, as explained yesterday, the pope is not out of danger,” the ******** said in its regular early evening update.
“This morning Pope Francis presented a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis, which also required the application of high-flow oxygen,” it said.
Daily blood tests “showed thrombocytopenia, associated with anaemia, which required the administration of blood transfusions”, it added.
“The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair even if he was suffering more than yesterday.”
The ******** earlier confirmed the Argentine pontiff would not deliver his usual weekly Angelus prayer on Sunday, saying the text would be published, as it was last weekend.
– Prayers for the pope –
Francis has been head of the Catholic Church since 2013, but has suffered numerous health issues in recent years, and underwent major surgery in 2021 and 2023.
This latest hospitalisation has cast doubt over his ability to continue as leader of world’s almost 1.4 billion Catholics, fuelling speculation over his potential resignation — and who might take over.
******** Secretary of State Pietro Parolin told Italy’s Corriere della Sera daily that such discussion was normal but said he would not enter into “useless speculation”.
“Now we are thinking about the health of the Holy Father, his recovery, his return to the ********: these are the only things that matter,” the cardinal said.
A group of nuns and priests from around the world gathered Saturday outside the entrance to the Gemelli hospital, where Francis is staying in a special papal suite on the 10th floor, to pray for him.
“We are praying today for the Holy Father, Pope Francis, and our hope is that he will recover well in the Grace of God,” Brazilian priest Don Wellison told AFP.
Francis has been moving between his bed, a chair and an adjacent chapel where he prays and has also been doing some work, the ******** says.
Professor Sergio Alfieri, who leads the pope’s medical team at the Gemalli, said Friday the pontiff’s condition has been slightly improving, allowing doctors to incrementally lower the amount of medication he is taking.
But he made clear then that the situation was very serious, noting the pontiff’s age and general condition of health.
“Is the pope out of danger? No, the pope is not out of danger,” Alfieri said, but added: “If you then ask whether he is in danger of dying at this moment, the answer is still no.”
Francis has said the papacy is a job for life, but has also left the door open to resigning like his predecessor Benedict XVI.
He has often joked about the scheming his health woes inevitably prompt, particularly among those who oppose his attempts at reform.
After undergoing colon surgery in 2021, he joked that “they were preparing the conclave”, the meeting of cardinals to elect a new pope following a death or resignation.
– A lot of respect –
Italian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi told the Corriere on Friday he did not rule out Francis stepping down.
But Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, who leads the Holy See’s powerful Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, said he had heard no particular manoeuvring this time.
“I don’t see a pre-conclave environment, I don’t see more conversations on a potential successor than there were a year ago,” he told Argentina’s La Nacion daily.
“So far I perceive a lot of respect.”
The pope maintains a punishing work schedule, and in September made a 12-day tour to the Asia-Pacific.
But he has suffered increasing health issues, from his colon surgery to a hernia operation in 2023.
He is also overweight and suffers constant hip and knee pain, which force him to use a wheelchair most of the time.

New York Knicks fans who get Altice USA’s Optimum cable service will once again be able to see their favorite National Basketball Association team play live games.
MSG Networks has reached a deal with the fourth-largest U.S. cable provider to bring back the NBA’s New York Knicks and the NHL’s New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils. Service has been restored in time for the Rangers vs. Sabres game at 5:30 pm E.T.
Specific terms of the agreement weren’t released. The deal gives Altice USA the option of moving MSG Networks onto its “Everything TV” tier for new and existing customers, which costs $140 per month, according to a person familiar with the matter. Altice USA now offers skinnier bundles that don’t include sports for less money.
Altice USA hasn’t carried MSG Networks since Jan 1. Pay TV operators such as Altice USA have taken a hard stance to gain flexibility to tier regional sports networks as a way to keep costs down for cable TV subscribers.
This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

Champions Trophy: Josh Inglis gives England the blues by powering Australia to victory
Champions Trophy: Josh Inglis gives England the blues by powering Australia to victory
In making a superb 165, Duckett played how most have requested. The attacking intent was reined in, gaps worked and a score steadily built rather than thrown up in a hurry.
England’s top order has been asked to score hundreds – to overcome their tendency to start well and depart – and Duckett produced England’s highest score in a Champions Trophy or World Cup.
Their score of 351-8 was the highest at a Champions Trophy. Another 30 may not have mattered the way Inglis was going.
In truth, England’s biggest failure on this occasion was not made in Lahore on Saturday but before Christmas in London – or at least after Jacob Bethell pulled a hamstring in Nagpur.
Their squad has four wicketkeepers, one specialist spinner and one batting all-rounder, meaning England will always lose their fight in search of the perfect balance.
With four frontline bowlers against Australia, Buttler had nowhere to turn when Brydon Carse had his most difficult day to date in an England shirt – even if Liam Livingstone and Joe Root performed admirably as the fifth bowler.
It leaves a feeling that Bethell’s injury was more damaging to England than it first appeared, given his left-arm spin would have provided another option.
Without him Buttler now faces a defining week in his reign as England’s white-ball captain.
After a dismal defence of their 50-over world title in 2023 and an uninspired attempt at retaining their T20 crown last year, he cannot afford a group-stage exit here.
Matthew Mott was dispensable enough to take the fall for the previous failures but Brendon McCullum, given the keys to all England sides to mould as he pleases until 2027, is not. Instead, it will be Buttler in the firing line if this group stage is not turned around.
Next is Afghanistan in four days’ time – a side who beat England during the World Cup 16 months ago – and then South Africa, some people’s favourite for the title, with wins likely to be needed in both.
England have questions again and some do not have an easy answer. Inglis has given England the (sky) blues.

The hits and near-misses you never hear about
The hits and near-misses you never hear about

A large asteroid known as 2024 YR4 has grabbed headlines this week as scientists first raised its chances of hitting earth, then lowered them.
The latest estimate says the object has a 0.28% chance of hitting Earth in 2032, significantly lower than the 3.1% chance earlier in the week.
Scientists say it is now more likely to smash into the Moon, with Nasa estimating the probability of that happening at 1%.
But in the time since 2024 YR4 was first spotted through a telescope in the desert in Chile two months ago, tens of other objects have passed closer to Earth than the Moon, which in astronomical terms sounds like a near miss.
It is likely that others, albeit much smaller, have hit us or burned up in the atmosphere but gone unnoticed.
This is the story of the asteroids that you never hear about – the fly-bys, the near-misses and the direct hits.
The vast majority are harmless. But some carry the most valuable clues for unlocking mysteries in our universe, information we are desperate to get our hands on.
Drs. Bill and Eileen Ryan, Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4m Telescope, New Mexico Tech
2024 YR4 was first detected in December and there is small chance it could hit Earth on 22 December 2032
Asteroids, also sometimes called minor planets, are rocky pieces left over from the formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
Rocks routinely orbit close to Earth, pushed by the gravity of other planets.
For most of human history, it has been impossible to know how close we have come to being struck by a large asteroid.
Serious monitoring of objects near Earth only started in the late 20th century, explains Professor Mark Boslough from the University of New Mexico. “Before that we were blissfully oblivious to them,” he says.
We now know that quite large objects – 40m across or more – pass between Earth and the Moon several times a year. That’s the same size of asteroid that exploded over Siberia in 1908 injuring people and damaging buildings over 200 square miles.
The most serious near-miss, and the closest comparison with YR4, was an asteroid called Apophis which was first spotted in 2004 and measured 375 meters across, or around the size of a cruise ship.
Professor Patrick Michel from French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) tracked Apophis and recalls it was considered the most hazardous asteroid ever detected.
It took until 2013 to get enough observations to understand that it was not going to hit Earth.
But he says there was one big difference with YR4. “We didn’t know what to do. We discovered something, we determined an impact probability, and then thought, who do we call?” he says. Scientists and governments had no idea how to respond, he says.
A large asteroid strike could be catastrophic if it hits an area where humans live.
We don’t know exactly how big YR4 is yet, but if it is at the top end of estimates, about 90m across, it would likely remain substantially intact rather than break up as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere.
“The surviving asteroid mass could create a crater. Structures in the immediate vicinity would likely be destroyed and people within the local region (dozens of kilometers) would be at risk of serious injury,” explains Professor Kathryn Kunamoto from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Some people could die.
But since Apophis, there have been huge advances in what is called planetary defence.
Prof Michel is part of the international Space Mission Planning Advisory Group.
Its delegates advise governments on how to respond to an asteroid threat and run rehearsal exercise for direct hits. There is one going on right now.
If the asteroid was on course for a town or city, Dr Boslough compares the response to preparations made for a major hurricane, including evacuations and measures to protect infrastructure.
The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group will meet again in April to decide what to do about YR4.
By then most scientists expect the risk to have almost entirely gone, as their calculations of its trajectory become more precise.
We do have options beyond “taking a hit”, as Dr Kumamoto puts it.
Nasa and the European Space Agency have developed technologies to nudge dangerous asteroids off course.
Nasa’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) successfully slammed a spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos to change its path.
However scientists are sceptical if that would work in the case of YR4 due to uncertainty about what it is made of and the short window of time to successfully deflect it.
And what about the asteroids that do hit Earth? An awkward truth for scientists is that a direct strike on land far from humans is the ideal scenario for asteroids.
That gives them actual pieces from distant objects within of our solar system, as well as insights into Earth’s impact history.
Nearly 50,000 asteroids have been found in Antarctica. The most famous, called ALH 84001, is believed to have originated on Mars and contains minerals with vital evidence about the planet’s history, suggesting it was warm and had water on its surface billions of years ago.
In 2023 scientists detected an asteroid called 33 Polyhymnia which could have an element denser than anything found on Earth.
This superheavy element would be something entirely new to our planet. 33 Polyhymnia is at least 170 million kilometers away, but it’s an indication of the incredible potential of asteroids for our understanding of science.
Getty Images
The Barringer Crater in Arizona, US was formed by a meteorite about 50m across that hit 50,000 years ago
Now that the chances are higher that YR4 will hit the Moon, some scientists are getting excited about that.
An impact could give real-world answers to questions they have only been able to simulate using computers.
“To have even one data point of a real example would be incredibly powerful,” says Prof Gareth Collins from Imperial College London.
“How much material comes out when the asteroid hits? How fast does it go? How far does that travel?” he asks.
It would help them test the scenarios they have modelled about asteroid impacts on Earth, helping create better predictions.
YR4 has reminded us that we live on a planet vulnerable to collisions with something the solar system is full of – rocks.
Scientists warn against complacency, saying it is a matter of when, not if, a large asteroid will threaten human life on Earth, although most expect that to be in the coming centuries rather than decades.
In the meantime, our ability to monitor space keeps improving. Later this year the largest digital camera ever built will begin working at the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, able to capture the night sky in incredible detail.
And the closer and longer we look, the more asteroids spinning close to Earth we are likely to spot.

Hermoso hails Rubiales verdict as ‘important precedent’
Hermoso hails Rubiales verdict as ‘important precedent’
Spain forward Jenni Hermoso says that the guilty verdict given to Luis Rubiales for his unsolicited kiss after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final sets an “important precedent” for women’s rights.
“After everything, this will create an important precedent in society, where there is still much work to do,” she wrote in Spanish on Instagram on Saturday. “My heart is full of each person who was with me and will stay with me in this fight.”
It was her first public statement since a Spanish court ruled on Thursday that the former president of Spain’s soccer federation had ********* abused her when he kissed her on the lips without consent during the World Cup presentation ceremony in Sydney.
Spain’s National Court ordered Rubiales to pay more than 10,000 euros ($A16,400) in fines and prohibited him from getting within 200 metres of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence.
She ended her post with the message “And now, it is over,” (“Y ahora sí, se acabó) in reference to a phrase that went viral during the kiss scandal that meant “enough is enough.”

Where are Brian Laundrie’s parents now? What they’ve said about their son and Gabby Petito
Where are Brian Laundrie’s parents now? What they’ve said about their son and Gabby Petito

A new Netflix documentary is bringing fresh attention to the story of Gabby Petito, a young travel vlogger who was murdered by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, in 2021.
The three-part docuseries “American *******: Gabby Petito” explores what officials and family members know about the young couple’s final months.
Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie in Netflix’s “American *******: Gabby Petito.”
Petito’s body was discovered in Grand Teton National Park in September 2021, weeks after her family reported her missing. Her death was ruled a ********* by strangulation, NBC News reported.
Brian Laundrie’s remains were discovered the following month, and officials said he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He left behind writings in which he claimed “responsibility” for Petito’s death, the FBI said in a statement, according to NBC News.
While Gabby Petito’s parents and step-parents participated extensively in the Netflix documentary, Brian Laundrie’s parents declined to take part.
“We reached out to them, they didn’t want to participate, and we respect that. This is a very difficult story,” director and executive producer Julia Willoughby Nason told TODAY.com.
She acknowledges there has been “a lot of speculation, a lot of conspiracy” around what Brian Laundrie’s parents may have known about the ******* prior to their son’s death.
In a 2022 lawsuit, the family of Gabby Petito alleged that the Laundries knew their son had killed her, but concealed that information from authorities.
Nason says she doesn’t have a “definitive answer” about how much the Laundries knew, and said the documentary simply lays out facts about how the case unfolded.
“We show certain things that came out about Brian’s phone calls to his parents a couple of days after the *******,” she said. “Certain things like that, and many more, just leave it open for discussion for the audience.”
Director and executive producer Michael Gasparro says he was left with questions after working on the documentary.
“What exactly did the (Laundrie) parents know?” he told TODAY.com. “What did they know, and what did they talk about?”
Brian Laundrie’s parents have never been charged with any crime in relation to their son’s actions. They have maintained they did not know their son murdered Gabby Petito before this information became public.
Read on to learn more about Brian Laundrie’s parents, Roberta and Christopher Laundrie. TODAY.com has reached out for comment through the Laundries’ lawyer, Steven Bertolino.
Who are Brian Laundrie’s parents?
Brian Laundrie’s parents are Roberta and Christopher Laundrie. As of October 2023, they lived in North Port, Florida, according to court documents.
In addition to their late son, they share one daughter, Cassandra, born in 1989.
Roberta Laundrie retired in 2020 after working as a secretary for the Office of Water Resources in Suffolk County, Florida. Christopher Laundrie owned his own business repairing and selling juice-making machines, according to a 2023 court deposition.
The Laundries have said they had a good relationship with their son.
“He was a great kid. He was ambitious. He was outgoing, he was a great guy,” Christopher Laundrie said in a 2023 court deposition related to a civil case involving Gabby Petito’s parents.
The Laundries met Gabby Petito in 2019 when their son Brian Laundrie brought her home, Roberta Laundrie said in her 2023 deposition.
“I thought they were very sweet together, very playful together,” she said. “They enjoyed each other and I thought it was a nice, good relationship.”
Christopher Laundrie also said he recalled Petito as being “very nice, very respectful” and said he didn’t have any serious concerns about her relationship with his son.
“I thought it was a very good relationship,” he said in his deposition. “They were young, two young people really trying to have a good time, you know, and they did as far as I know.”
In early 2020, the Laundries invited Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito to live for free in an investment condo they owned in North Port, and they lived there for about a year, per the deposition.
American *******: Gabby Petito. (L to R) Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito in American *******: Gabby Petito.
The young couple then moved in with the Laundries and lived with them between January and May of 2021, before leaving for their cross-country road trip in June of that year, Roberta Laundrie said in her deposition.
Why were Christopher and Roberta Laundrie sued?
The Laundries faced a civil lawsuit from Petito’s parents, who sued them in 2022 for intentional and reckless infliction of emotional distress. The Laundries’ lawyer, Steven Bertolino, was also named as a defendant.
In the lawsuit, Petito’s parents, Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt, alleged that the Laundries knew their son had murdered Petito and intentionally withheld that information. Petito’s parents claimed this gave them false hope that their daughter was still alive.
Christopher and Roberta gave depositions for this case in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court in Sarasota County, Florida, in October 2023.
In their depositions, the Laundries discussed their relationship with their son and Gabby Petito. They were also asked what they knew about their son’s crime, and when they knew it.
The parties involved in the civil case reached a settlement in February 2024, under undisclosed terms.
What did Brian Laundrie’s parents say about his crime?
Both Roberta and Christopher Laundrie have said that when Petito disappeared, they were not aware their son had murdered her.
In his October 2023 deposition, Christopher Laundrie described a phone call he had with Brian Laundrie on Aug. 29, 2021.
“He was not calm and he got very excited and told me things had — you know, ‘Gabby’s gone’ and he got very frantic,” he said.
Christopher Laundrie said he had “no idea” what his son meant by these words.
“He was very panicked and he said he didn’t know what to do. He said, you know, ‘Can you help me,’ you know, and he might need a lawyer,” Laundrie said.
He said he tried to calm his son down, and told him he would call an attorney the family knew, Steven Bertolino.
Asked in his deposition why he thought his son might need an attorney, Laundrie said he “didn’t even know what to think at the moment” and said at that time, he did not believe Petito was dead.
Roberta Laundrie also discussed this phone call in her deposition. She said her son sounded “upset” but not “frantic” on the call and “didn’t sound like himself.”
She said the fact that her son said he needed a lawyer did not necessarily lead her to believe that Petito had died.
“I didn’t know what to think. I don’t remember if that crossed my mind or if I just was so nervous I just thought he was in some kind of trouble,” she said.
“A lot of things ran through my head,” she added. “Possibly they got in a fight and, you know, maybe she’s going to press charges against him or something? I didn’t know.”
The Laundries both said in their depositions that they did not contact Petito’s parents at the time because their attorney had advised them not to speak to anyone.
On Sept. 11, 2021, the Petito and Schmidt family reported Gabby Petito as missing.
On Sept. 14, the Laundries issued a statement about Petito’s disappearance via their lawyer, Steven Bertolino.
“This is understandably an extremely difficult time for both the Petito family and the Laundrie family,” the Laundries’ statement read, as shared in a 2023 court document. “On behalf of the Laundrie family it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is reunited with her family.”
Roberta Laundrie said in her deposition that she and her husband released this statement to “calm the public down so that we’d know we did extend our best wishes to the Petitos.”
“It was a very scary time. We couldn’t leave the house. It was frightening,” she said.
She was asked during her deposition whether she had considered this statement might be “upsetting” to Petito’s parents and give them “false hope that their daughter was still alive.”
“I had hope she was alive and I wasn’t giving false hope,” Roberta Laundrie replied. “I didn’t know until I heard it on the news that she was gone. I had hope, also.”
Christopher Laundrie was asked in his deposition whether he was concerned about “how the Petitos might be feeling, not knowing where their daughter was.”
“I’m a considerate person. Of course I was. It was not a pleasant thing of any — for anybody, I’m sure,” he said.
On Sept. 17, 2021, the Laundries reported Brian Laundrie as missing. Two days later on Sept. 19, Petito’s body was found at the Spread Creek camping area in Grand Teton National Park.
Roberta Laundrie said the news that Petito had died was “heartbreaking,” as did her husband.
“It was heartbreaking all along, the whole situation,” Christopher Laundrie said.
There has ‘never been an apology,’ Petito’s father and stepmom say
In an interview with NewsNation that aired Feb. 17, Joe Petito and his wife Tara Petito said they have never received an apology.
“And we’re never going to get one,” Joe Petito said.
“At this point, I don’t want one. I would love for them to be charged with something. I really, really would love that. Do I think that’s happening now? Unfortunately, no. I want to erase that name out of my memory. I want to not think about them. i want to focus on what we’re doing with the foundation,” Tara Petito said.
In her own interview, Nichole Schmidt, Gabby Petito’s mom, spoke about getting answers and closure.
“I don’t think we’ll ever know why. The only two people who know why and how are the two people that were there when this happens. I think we have the answers we needed,” Nichole Schmidt said.
“We know that things are known. I don’t like to talk about them or say their names,” she continued.
She added that she has “forgiven Brian” to “let that anger go.”

Six Nations: England move into title mix with win over Scotland
Six Nations: England move into title mix with win over Scotland
In golf, round three is “moving day”. It’s a tournament’s watershed, where contenders rise and pretenders are washed away.
You can’t win the title on moving day, they say, but you can certainly lose it.
Round three duly proved to be where England and Scotland’s Six Nations fortunes diverged dramatically.
With leaders Ireland wobbling to a win in Cardiff, France Dublin-bound and the prospect of Italy and Wales to come – both distinct bonus-point birdie chances – England are in the title mix.
Scotland are not.
It is a big difference decided by margins of a single point and few millimetres.
England have spent much of the past six months on the wrong side of those final quarters and narrow scorelines.
Now, after shocking France at Twickenham a fortnight ago, they have found a happy habit of finding a way to win as the match teeters, nerves strain and muscles stiffen.
There were other similarities to a fortnight ago.
Scotland, like France, moved the ball with dexterity and speed that England aspire to, but seldom achieve.
The visitors dominated the attacking stats. They made more possession and territory. They made 13 trips to the opposition 22m, compared to England’s four. They made nine line breaks to two. Nearly 200m more metres with ball in hand. Thirty-five defenders beaten compared to 10.
You could go on. And doubtless some Scotland fans will as they pick over the pieces of another defeat in which their endeavour and good intentions went to waste.
Frenchman Pierre Brousset’s refereeing of the breakdown, where England won seven turnovers, and the scrum – where the hosts picked up three penalties – might also be part of the inquest.
Finn Russell’s screwy kicking performance, in which three potentially decisive conversion shots slipped by, won’t escape unnoticed either.

NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) Sees 73% EPS Upgrade, AI ***** Expands Growth Horizons
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) Sees 73% EPS Upgrade, AI ***** Expands Growth Horizons
We recently compiled a list of the 10 Hot AI Stocks to Buy Now. In this article, we are going to take a look at where NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) stands against the other hot AI stocks.
A disruptive breakthrough by a ******** tech startup in January 2025 has shaken the artificial intelligence (AI) market to its core, triggering a sharp sell-off among tech stocks and compelling investors to rethink their exposure to expensive semiconductors and large hardware providers. In just a few days, this innovative AI model demonstrated performance on par with established Western systems while operating at a fraction of the cost, upending the long-held belief that cutting-edge artificial intelligence must be built on enormous capital outlays and massive computing infrastructures.
This unexpected development has exposed vulnerabilities in sectors that have relied heavily on high-cost hardware, sending ripples through investment strategies and forcing market participants to rapidly reexamine the economics of AI. With the rapid emergence of more cost-efficient, scalable models, investors are now witnessing a fundamental shift where technological efficiency and operational agility are beginning to outweigh the premium previously demanded for state-of-the-art AI performance.
This shift is compelling companies across the AI landscape to accelerate innovation and streamline operations as they adapt to a new era defined by lower training costs and more efficient architectures. Although regulatory and national security concerns continue to loom large – particularly regarding data privacy and the geopolitical implications of relying on foreign-developed technologies – the promise of significantly reduced capital expenditures is reshaping the competitive dynamics of the sector. The advent of these efficient, cost-effective models forces large hardware providers and entrenched tech giants to reevaluate their strategies, while simultaneously opening the door to a broader array of investment opportunities that are less dependent on massive budgets and intensive computing resources. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is a global leader in GPUs, specializing in cutting-edge hardware used in AI training, gaming, and data centers. Its state-of-the-art GPUs are essential for powering AI advancements, including deep learning, autonomous vehicles, and high-performance computing applications, making it a key player in the rapidly growing tech industry. The US-based company ranked first on a recent list of 10 Best Semiconductor Stocks to Buy for the AI *****.
While the short-term market reaction to DeepSeek’s cost-efficient AI model may have put pressure on high-end semiconductor providers like NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), in the long term, this breakthrough could ultimately boost demand for advanced computing solutions, as its success demonstrates that artificial intelligence can become far more accessible and widely adopted, thereby driving a broader overall expansion of the AI ecosystem. This increased adoption is likely to spur further investments in training, cloud services, and data center infrastructure, all of which require more sophisticated and high-performance chips that only leading hardware providers can deliver, thereby creating a larger market for advanced processing units.
The positive surprises delivered by NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) have no end in sight, as the company is still finding ways to innovate, niches to expand, and partnerships to forge. As an example, the company is advancing healthcare through AI and accelerated computing, powering AI compute clusters and high-performance computing systems for cloud hyperscalers and healthcare markets. The company announced several strategic partnerships, including IQVIA for clinical trials acceleration, Arc Institute for biology foundation models development, and Illumina for advancing genomics analytics. NVIDIA’s healthcare business spans three major areas: digital health with AI agents for administrative tasks and patient experiences, digital biology representing a $300 billion opportunity in R&D and discovery, and digital devices for robotic medical applications. Furthermore, NVDA is leveraging physical AI capabilities through their three-computer trinity: real-time AI processing, AI development infrastructure, and Omniverse for physics-aware virtual worlds, particularly important for training medical robots and devices. To sum up, the growth opportunities of NVDA aren’t limited by data center demand for GPUs and the potential slowdown in Big Tech Capex appetite; NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is rather creating completely new niches and constantly expanding its total addressable market, which leads to never-ending positive surprises over the analysts’ consensus expectations.
Overall NVDA ranks 2nd on our list of the hot AI stocks to buy now. While we acknowledge the potential of NVDA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter timeframe. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than NVDA but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock.

Michael Hooper’s return to rugby no fairy-tale comeback
Michael Hooper’s return to rugby no fairy-tale comeback
Former Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper has endured a rough return to rugby union, being yellow carded for a professional foul as Verblitz were hammered 63-21 by Dave Rennie’s Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One.
Playing his first match for 18 months after ending his retirement in favour of a second stint in Japan, the 33-year-old was almost reduced to the role of a spectator as his former Wallaby bosses’ charges ran riot on Saturday.
Kobe piled on six first-half tries, all of which were converted by ex-Chiefs flyhalf Bryn Gatland, as they romped to a 42-7 halftime lead.
While Verblitz showed more resistance after the break, the demolition heaped further pressure on their ex-All ****** coaches, Steve Hansen and Ian Foster, with the loss the team’s seventh of the season, dropping them into the relegation zone of the 12-team league.
The bonus-point win consolidated Kobe’s position in the top six on a good day for the league’s former Wallaby coaches, with the Robbie Deans-coached Saitama Wild Knights extending their lead at the top-of-the-table after a 39-10 win over Sagamihara Dynaboars.
Brave Lupus Tokyo remain second but dropped a further point behind the leaders after being denied a bonus point from a nail-biting 45-44 win over ****** Rams Tokyo.
The defending champions appeared set for a comfortable afternoon after jumping to a 19-3 lead but the ****** Rams, who were inspired by All ****** scrumhalf TJ Perenara, refused to concede, finally finishing within a missed conversion of the upset of the season.
While the result was not an upset, the margin of Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bays’ 62-14 win over Shizuoka Blue Revs in the battle between the third and fourth ranked sides was eye-catching.
This was especially so of the game’s last 10 minutes, where Shizuoka appeared to throw in the towel as the Spears scored four tries.
The late scoring burst meant the Blue Revs conceded nine tries, which was many as they had conceded in their opening three matches of the season.
Shizuoka remain fourth, although they are now seven points behind the Spears, who have closed to within two of Brave Lupus.
In Division Two, former Wallaby scrumhalf Will Genia scored twice while All ****** backrower Akira Ioane claimed his first try in Japan, as Hanazono Liners crushed Kyushu Voltex 39-12 to move up to third on the point’s table.

SEC Drops OpenSea Investigation Easing Pressure on NFT Market
SEC Drops OpenSea Investigation Easing Pressure on NFT Market
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is closing its investigation into major non-fungible token marketplace OpenSea, the platform’s founder and CEO Devin Finzer said on social media.
The regulator issued a Wells notice against OpenSea in August 2024, indicating it was planning on pursuing an enforcement action against it. The regulator alleged the platform may have been operating as an unregistered securities marketplace.
The SEC’s move comes as the regulator is slated to vote on a deal negotiated with Coinbase to drop its lawsuit against the exchange, which is seen as a boon for the cryptocurrency industry and NFT creators.
“This is a win for everyone who is creating and building in our space. Trying to classify NFTs as securities would have been a step backward—one that misinterprets the law and slows innovation,” Finzer posted.
Reacting to Finzer’s post, Chris Akhavan, chief business officer of NFT marketplace Magic Eden, suggested it was a victory for the wider cryptocurrency space. “While we are competitors in the trenches, we share a deep belief in NFTs and what they will enable,” Akhavan wrote.
The announcement led to an uptick in activity for the native token of NFT marketplace LooksRare. The token, LOOKS, saw a surge in active addresses shortly after the announcement that represents an “approximately fivefold increase compared to the usual figures,” according to data from TheTie.

Warring parties propose ‘peace and unity’ in Sudan
Warring parties propose ‘peace and unity’ in Sudan
Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will sign a charter with allied political and armed groups to establish a “government of peace and unity” in territories it controls, signatories al-Hadi Idris and Ibrahim Mirghani have told Reuters.
The RSF has seized most of the western Darfur region and swathes of the Kordofan region in an almost-two-year war, but is being pushed back from central Sudan by the Sudanese army, which has condemned the formation of a parallel government.
Such a government, which has already drawn an expression of concern from the United Nations, is not expected to receive widespread recognition. Those affiliated with the government say its formation will be announced from inside the country.
General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, head of the paramilitary that has been accused of widespread abuses including genocide, was hit with sanctions by the United States earlier this year.
The war, which erupted after disagreements between the RSF and the army over their integration during a transition towards democracy, has devastated the country, driving half the population into hunger.
According to Idris, among the signatories to the charter and foundational constitution is powerful rebel leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu who controls vast swathes of territory and troops in South Kordofan state, and who has long demanded that Sudan embrace secularism.
Talks that began earlier this week were hosted in Kenya, drawing condemnation from Sudan and domestic criticism of President William Ruto for plunging the country into a diplomatic melee.

Federal agencies that could be impacted by job cuts

Federal workers will have to document everything they did last week or face resignation.
These instructions come from a Saturday afternoon post on X by Elon Musk, the head of the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency.
President Trump earlier in the day posted on Truth Social saying that Musk is doing a great job in reducing the federal government and that he would like to see him get more aggressive in the pursuit.
“Remember, we have a country to save, but ultimately, to make greater than before,” he wrote.

Musk seemed to have responded with his new demand of federal workers to explain their work or risk losing their jobs. He called it consistent with the president’s instructions.
“Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk added.
The White House has not responded to CBS News’ requests for comment.

This NATO ally will ‘buy, buy, buy’ more weapons as quickly as possible after intelligence report says Russia may start a war in Europe in a few years
This NATO ally will ‘buy, buy, buy’ more weapons as quickly as possible after intelligence report says Russia may start a war in Europe in a few years
Denmark will spend 70% more on defense over the next two years, bringing its outlays to 3.2% of GDP, as President Donald Trump has called on NATO countries to boost their militaries. The planned increase also follows a Danish intelligence report that said Russia may start a war in Europe within years.
NATO member Denmark will pour billions more into its military as Europe reckons with the risks of wavering US support for the trans-Atlantic alliance and continued aggression from Russia.
Over the next two years, Denmark will spend an additional $7 billion on defense, representing a 70% increase and lifting its outlays to 3.2% of GDP from 2.4% last year.
On Wednesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen signaled urgency in its procurement plans, which will also be aided by waivers and a restructuring of the defense ministry.
“There is one message for the chief of defense: Buy, buy, buy,” she told reporters, later adding, “If we can’t get the best equipment, buy the next best. There’s only one thing that counts now and that is speed.”
The infusion of funds will enable Denmark to buy cutting-edge weapons and send more equipment to Ukraine. It also comes a month after pledging $1.9 billion to reinforce Greenland’s defenses as Russia has raised its military profile in the Arctic while Trump has said the US should own the island.
NATO members have backed a target of spending 2% of GDP on defense, but several have fallen short, and President Donald Trump has said they should increase their goal to as much as 5%.
Meanwhile, European defense contractors like BAE Systems, Thales, Leonardo, and Saab have shot up since Trump was elected, outperforming US giants like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.
That’s as he pushes for cuts at the Pentagon and a swift end to Russia’s three-year-old war on Ukraine, with the potential for European troops being deployed to Ukraine as part of a settlement.
Earlier this month, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service assessed the risk from Russia once its Ukraine war stops or freezes in place.
Russia could launch a local war against a bordering country within six months, a regional war in the Baltics within two years, and a large-scale attack on Europe within five years if the US does not get involved, according to a translation of the report from Politico.
“Russia is likely to be more willing to use military force in a regional war against one or more European NATO countries if it perceives NATO as militarily weakened or politically divided,” according to the report, which was dated Feb. 9 and released Tuesday. “This is particularly true if Russia assesses that the US cannot or will not support the European NATO countries in a war with Russia.”
That warning was echoed by Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin, who wrote in the Financial Times on Friday that Russia is reconstituting its military to become ******* and better in five years.
And even if Russia’s Ukraine war ends and sanctions on Moscow are lifted, President Vladimir Putin will remain hostile to the West, viewing it as a “mortal enemy,” he added.
“Putin’s triumphalism, vengefulness and desire to make a mark on Russian history, along with the glaring lack of checks and balances in the Kremlin, will prompt Moscow to start preparing for the next war while stepping up its intimidation campaign against Europe,” Gabuev said.
