Florida weather forecast calls for ‘liquid sunshine’ … followed by another cold front Florida weather forecast calls for ‘liquid sunshine’ … followed by another cold front Dig out that umbrella. Many areas across the entire state will need it today, and possibly into tomorrow. Oh, and then cooler temperatures are expected — yes, again — later in the week. How much rain depends on where you are, but anywhere from 1 to 2.5 inches is forecast. Some isolated areas could see 4 inches, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. “We expect the heaviest rainfall to fall over parts of South Florida on Monday.” ➤ Weather alerts via text: Sign up to get updates about current storms and weather events by location For some areas, the rain will be welcome relief. “Florida has only received 1.48 inches of rain this year, specifically for the station located at Miami International Airport. This is below average for this *******, with a deficit of over 2.5 inches,” according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. Weather alerts issued in FloridaCurrent drought conditions in FloridaJim Cantore: ‘Liquid sunshine’ heading to Florida During an overall look across the United States early Monday on X, Jim Cantore, The Weather Channel meteorologist, talked about the wide swing of temperatures in the west and across the northern Plains. “So last week it was 30-40 degrees below average and now this week its 20-30 degrees above average. Weeeeee.” Then he turned his attention to Florida: “Oh and I almost forgot the nice dose of needed liquid sunshine for Florida.” How much rain is in Florida’s forecast? Some could see up to 4 inches Storms bringing rain to Florida Feb. 24-25, 2025. “Overall, we’re expecting a coding of rainfall that could reach 1 inch across North Florida through Central Florida,” according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. “Some isolated spots, especially across Central Florida, could reach 2.5 inches. For South Florida, the rainfall could range between one and a half and 2.5 inches. But there could be some isolated amount with 4 inches. “As this system progresses, expect gradual clearing along the entire Peninsula, improving from north to south Monday night. “However, South Florida will still experience scattered rain showers overnight on Monday and Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the entire Peninsula will be dominated by North winds, which will also bring lower humidity levels and very comfortable temperatures.” When will it rain? Timing on expected rain for Florida Rainfall expected Feb. 24-26, 2025. Here’s the forecast timing for rain provided by the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network: “The Panhandle can expect a few rain showers to move in during the evening and morning hours on Monday. “By sunrise Monday, some downpours could travel along I-75 from North Florida toward Central Florida. “By Monday early afternoon, some scattered thunderstorms could be moving along the southern half of Florida, although South Florida would have already received rounds of showers in the morning. “South Florida is forecast to receive heavier downpours and some isolated intense storms between 11 a.m. and the afternoon. Although we’re not expecting widespread severe weather, some thunderstorms could have damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or more since the bulk of the moisture will travel over South Florida. There could be some areas where flooding develops.” Another cold front to drop Florida temps as February ends Another cold front will drop temperatures across Florida for the end of February and beginning of March 2025. Another cold front is expected to cross Florida Thursday night, reinforcing the cooler and dry air just in time to finish the week, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. “Through the end of the month into the start of March, forecasters warn that temperatures can fluctuate back and forth between bursts of pleasant, springlike values and cold intrusions, as is typical during the transition periods between seasons,” according to AccuWeather. Bridge Alliance, Telna team on eSIM strategic partnership
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Bridge Alliance, Telna team on eSIM strategic partnership Bridge Alliance, Telna team on eSIM strategic partnership Managed embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) connectivity provider Telna has inked a strategic partnership with mobile industry association Bridge Alliance to deliver what is intended to be “seamless” mobile roaming experiences for subscribers and capitalise on the growing demand for travel eSIM services. Comprising major mobile network operators (MNOs) across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Bridge Alliance has a presence in enterprise mobility, machine-to-machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) roll-outs for multinational companies. The aim is that member companies pool resources and share best practices to deliver what the association said would be a “smooth, high-performance and unparalleled” roaming experience for travellers. It sees the partnership as allowing it to use Telna’s roaming eSIM enablement platform to equip its members with advanced roaming eSIM distribution capabilities, tapping into the wider eSIM distribution ecosystem. In addition, this implementation will aim to enable onboarded mobile operators to integrate eSIM technology, ensuring their connectivity services are optimised to address new roaming challenges. In doing this, said Telna, they will be able to enhance their retail offerings and unlock new growth opportunities, allowing them to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving mobile landscape. Telna’s eSIM-ready digital platforms embed eSIM activation into digital touchpoints for roaming with flexible international connectivity. Data plans are available directly through web stores and mobile apps. Additional business opportunities can be created through third-party eSIM integrations, enabling brands to deliver travel services via their own super apps. Additionally, Telna’s eSIM service is white-labelled and customisable, enabling branding of digital eSIM storefronts and mobile applications. The application programming interface (API)-first approach is claimed to ensure flexibility, scalability and ease of integration. MNOs can connect systems with the platform’s APIs to exchange data, plan information and provisioning requests. The platform will then generate the necessary eSIM profile and deliver it directly to the customer’s device, communicating with the network to complete a provisioning process. Ken Wee, senior vice-president for partnership and new business at Bridge Alliance, said: “We’re delighted to have Telna join our Bridge Alliance Technology Partnership Programme. We look forward to deepening our partnership in enabling the roaming eSIM distribution ecosystem and to meet emerging needs in new roaming industry trends.” Telna CEO Gregory Gundelfinger added: “The flexibility and simplicity of eSIM technology appeals to customers. It will help MNOs to monetise the so-called ‘silent roamers’, subscribers that tend to avoid using mobile services while they’re abroad, preferring to rely on Wi-Fi instead. “Operators have long sought for a solution to activate silent roamers and recover those revenues, but with little success,” he said. “Now, eSIM offers that solution, allowing MNOs to provide affordable and easy-to-use roaming packages that help customers maintain control over their connectivity. eSIM technology is efficient, cost-effective and flexible. “It allows for faster and more efficient provisioning of services, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards, which reduces costs. eSIM enables seamless mobile connectivity, with plans tailored to customers’ needs and usage patterns.” Source link #Bridge #Alliance #Telna #team #eSIM #strategic #partnership Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content] -
Nvidia may be the stock of the decade, investor says Nvidia may be the stock of the decade, investor says Listen and subscribe to Opening Bid on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. Nvidia (NVDA) remains as dominant as ever, one longtime bull says. “No one can compete with Nvidia,” Navellier & Associates founder and chairman Louis Navellier told me on Yahoo Finance’s Opening Bid podcast (see video above or listen below). “They have a monopoly on generative AI chips.” His firm has about $1 billion in assets under management. Navellier originally purchased Nvidia’s stock in May 2019 and has been holding on ever since. His bullishness stems in part from the company’s leading chip technology but also from the impressive leadership of founder Jensen Huang. “You should hold Nvidia until the end of the decade,” Navellier added. This embedded content is not available in your region. The Street is sticking with Nvidia into its market-moving earnings report after the close of trading on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Despite China-based DeepSeek rocking the super-bullish AI thesis earlier this year, Wall Street still sees Nvidia profiting from the global buildout of AI infrastructure. Aggressive 2025 capital expenditure assumptions by hyperscalers such as Amazon (AMZN) and Meta (META) shared during this earnings season underscore the point. “Over the coming decades, the investment [in artificial intelligence] is happening,” Russell Investments chief investment officer Kate El-Hillow told me on Opening Bid. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang delivers a keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas, Nev., on Jan. 6, 2025. (Artur Widak/Anadolu via Getty Images) · Anadolu via Getty Images However, that’s not to say there aren’t signs of caution going into Nvidia’s earnings report. Yahoo Finance data shows Nvidia’s first quarter earnings per share (EPS) trend has drifted modestly lower over the past 30 days. The Street has also not pushed up its 2025 EPS estimates on Nvidia for more than 60 days. Nvidia is also among the most cheaply valued AI stocks at the moment. On a forward price-to-earnings (PE) multiple basis, Yahoo Finance data shows Nvidia trading at 29 times forward earnings. Broadcom (AVGO) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) are valued at 35 times and 41 times, respectively. Arm Holdings (ARM) clocks in at 72 times. But the Nvidia bulls continue to be unshaken. Listen: What Bill Gates thinks about Nvidia “We expect another robust performance and ‘clear beat and raise special’ this week from Nvidia that should calm the nerves of investors as Jensen Huang lays out the massive demand drivers from Blackwell and AI Capex in the field fueling this 4th Industrial Revolution,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a client note on Monday. 1 Stock That Will Be Worth More Than Oracle 5 Years From Now 1 Stock That Will Be Worth More Than Oracle 5 Years From Now The fast-growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has given Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) a nice boost over the past couple of years, with shares of the company that’s known for providing database management systems more than doubling during this *******. That’s not surprising. AI has opened a whole new growth opportunity for Oracle as customers have been renting its cloud infrastructure to train and deploy AI models and applications. As a result, Oracle has been able to build a massive revenue pipeline that should allow it to deliver strong growth over the next five years. It is worth noting that Oracle’s impressive run on the stock market over the past couple of years has brought its market cap to $492 billion, recently making it the 15th most valuable company in the U.S. However, there’s another company that has significantly outpaced Oracle’s returns in the past couple of years thanks to AI. Let’s take a closer look at that name and see why it may be able to overtake Oracle’s market cap in the next five years. Software specialist Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) delivered phenomenal returns of 1,150% over the past couple of years, which is way higher than the gains clocked by Oracle. This remarkable run brought Palantir’s market cap to $249 billion as of this writing. Not surprisingly, Palantir’s market cap growth has outpaced Oracle’s by a massive margin. PLTR Market Cap data by YCharts AI played a central role in this massive jump in Palantir’s stock price over the past couple of years. Customers looking to integrate AI software into their operations have been flocking toward Palantir’s Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), leading to an acceleration in the company’s growth. This is evident in the chart below. PLTR Revenue (Quarterly) data by YCharts The good part is that Palantir’s growth likely will keep getting better over the next five years considering the huge end-market opportunity the company is tapping. According to one estimate, the global generative AI software market could jump fourfold between 2024 and 2030, generating an annual revenue of $391 billion. Palantir reported 29% revenue growth in 2024 to $2.87 billion, indicating that it has massive room for growth over the next five years. More importantly, Palantir is on its way to making the most of this huge opportunity thanks to its fast-growing customer base and its ability to win more business from existing customers. For example, the company’s overall customer base shot up by an impressive 43% in the fourth quarter of 2024. Even better, the increasing size of the contracts that Palantir signed led to an impressive 40% year-over-year jump in its remaining deal value (RDV) last quarter to $5.4 billion. That number is well ahead of the company’s $3.75 billion revenue estimate for 2025, suggesting that it could deliver better-than-expected results going forward. Story Continues Also, Palantir’s existing customers tend to increase their adoption of AIP after signing the initial contract. That’s one of the reasons why there was a 56% year-over-year increase in the company’s total contract value (TCV) last quarter to $1.8 billion. So, it won’t be surprising to see Palantir’s RDV growth remaining solid over the next few years as more companies adopt generative AI software and sign ******* deals with the company. One key reason why Palantir has been able to attract customers toward its AIP is because the company has been ranked as the top provider of AI software by third-party research firms. So, the stage seems set for Palantir to keep growing at an incredible pace over the next five years, but will it be able to deliver enough upside to overtake Oracle? If Palantir manages to sustain its remarkable rally on the back of outstanding growth, it may not take five years for the software specialist to overtake Oracle’s market cap. After all, Palantir’s market cap would have to grow by 97% to reach Oracle’s levels, and Palantir has reduced the gap between their value by a huge margin in 2025 already. PLTR data by YCharts Of course, some might point out Palantir is trading at extremely lofty multiples right now when compared to Oracle, and that could limit the former’s upside. PLTR PE Ratio data by YCharts However, if you look past the valuation, compare the growth rates of the two companies, and take into consideration Palantir’s leading position in the AI software platforms market, there is a strong possibility that it may be able to justify its valuation in the long term. Palantir’s earnings growth, for instance, is expected to be triple Oracle’s in the current fiscal year. That trend is expected to continue in the future as well. PLTR EPS Estimates for Next Fiscal Year data by YCharts So, the market could reward Palantir’s stronger earnings growth with more upside when compared to Oracle stock over the next five years, and that could help Palantir become a more valuable company. An Uneasy Propaganda Alliance | History Today An Uneasy Propaganda Alliance | History Today It was supposed to be a prestige project for Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, a way to convince their people – and the world at large – that the newly signed Anti-Comintern Pact was more than empty words. To prove that both countries were indeed Brüdervölker (brother nations), a ******* and a Japanese filmmaker would together create a film showing how the two nations aligned politically and culturally. So, in 1936, a ******* crew landed in Yokohama ready to make cinema history. The film would be called Die Tochter des Samurai (‘The Daughter of the Samurai’) and would feature a love triangle between a Japanese man, Teruo (the popular actor Kosugi Isamu), his fiancée Mitsuko (Hara Setsuko, who would go on to become Japan’s most celebrated film star), and his ******* lover Gerda (Ruth Eweler). The plot was simple: Teruo returns to Japan after being educated in Germany, his head filled with modern ideas – and Gerda. In Japan he must reconnect with his Volk (people), roots, and sense of duty, reject Gerda, and find his way back to Mitsuko. It ends with Teruo and Mitsuko married with a young child as settlers farming in Manchuria, China, while a Japanese soldier watches over them. Germany sent the filmmaker Arnold Fanck (1889-1974) to Japan at the request of the influential producers Kawakita Nagamasa and Kawakita Kashiko. They had picked Fanck because of his mountain and sports films, which celebrated proto-fascist ideology by focussing on grandiose nature shots and heroic exploits. His Japanese counterpart was Itami Mansaku (1900-46), who, in contrast, was a satirical, left-wing filmmaker with a penchant for carefully crafted psychological portraits and subversive critiques of authority. Fanck chose Mansaku based on his work in ******* films, likely unaware of his politics. Itami rejected the offer to work with him three times before agreeing, possibly under studio pressure or tempted by the chance to work on an international film. The two men proved to be profoundly mismatched, and their arguments came to a head when Itami eventually refused to show up on set. Instead of abandoning the project, however, the filmmakers split and created two films, using the same sets, actors, and similar plotlines: The Daughter of the Samurai, shot by Fanck, and The New Earth by Itami were both released in 1937. These films reveal the clash between Nazi Germany’s depiction of Japan and Japan’s struggle to assert its self-image. Fanck was keen to introduce what he saw as ‘traditional Japanese culture’ to his ******* audience by including a medley of Japanese activities and stereotypes, such as countless shots of Mount Fuji, cherry blossom, women in kimono, a sumō match, and ikebana flower arranging. He also almost entirely avoided city scenes, instead focussing on long, aesthetically pleasing shots of nature. Often presented without context or plot relevance, they idealised Japan as a pre-modern, almost magical place, avoiding its modern military and economic power. Itami, in contrast, depicted factory workers and farmers and shots of Yokohama and Tokyo, presenting Japan as a modern, industrialised state. He also purged any mention of Germany from his film, making Gerda American and replacing the Swastika flag that Fanck used liberally with various international flags, possibly to create additional distance from Fanck’s project, or to appeal to an international audience. [Hidden Content] for The Daughter of the Samurai (Die Tochter des Samurai), 1937. GermanFilms.net. Yet, despite these differences, similar themes run through both films. One of them is the Volk-ohne-Raum (people without space) trope, a central theme in Nazi propaganda that claimed that, following the Treaty of Versailles, the ******* people did not have enough space to live and grow and had to expand to the East. The ideology was closely tied to the idea of bäuerliche Tugenden (peasant virtues) and the sacredness of soil, a frequent subject of Nazi propaganda films such as Schimmelreiter (1934), Ein Volksfeind (1937), and Opfergang (1944). While the Volk-ohne-Raum trope is generally understood as *******, Japanese thinkers also took it up. By the 1930s it was used to rationalise Japan’s expansion into Manchuria and beyond. Various characters throughout both films express the concern that, although Japanese soil is good, it is not enough to feed the Volk (minzoku). Teruo explains to Gerda that Manchuria has fertile soil, but nobody with the knowledge to cultivate it; Teruo’s father tells him that there is not enough space in Japan and that the Japanese soil cannot feed the people. Though Itami pushed back against Fanck’s orientalising depictions of cherry blossoms and Geisha, he advocated for Japanese imperialism in China. Throughout The New Earth, Manchuria appears devoid of people, with its fields, building sites, modern cities, and streets completely deserted – entirely suitable for Japanese resettlement. In the version of Fanck’s film that circulated in Germany, all references to Manchuria were cut following a complaint by the ******** ambassador in Berlin. The scenes depicting Manchuria remained, but the film no longer mentioned a specific locale as, by 1937, Nazi Germany had not decided whether Japan or China would be the more desirable ally. The Axis nations showed almost absolute faith in the power of film, exemplified by the many propaganda films they produced. For a joint Japanese-******* propaganda film to work, however, it must be made first. By showing their inability to cooperate, Fanck and Itami unwittingly mirrored the alliance between Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and demonstrated the impossibility of creating a transnational fascist culture. Despite many claims to the contrary from both sides, Japan and Germany’s political partnership was little more than hollow lip service. Each side added secret amendments to their treaties and forged clandestine alliances, such as Japan’s secret security protocol in the 1936 Comintern Pact and Germany’s Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with the Soviets in 1939. However, although the two nations were unwilling to collaborate meaningfully, even on something as relatively straightforward as a joint film, they were happy to use the same doctrine and means to carve up the world between them. Ultimately, the ideologies underpinning The Daughter of the Samurai and The New Earth – an aggressive push for expansion, racial superiority, and unrestrained militarism – ensured both nations’ destruction. Macron fact-checks Trump over Ukraine funding Macron fact-checks Trump over Ukraine funding After their meeting in the Oval Office on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron interrupted US President Donald Trump as they took questions from reporters. Trump had said European countries were “loaning” money to Ukraine. “They’re getting their money back,” he added. Macron placed his hand on Trump’s arm and said that Europe’s Ukraine funding took the form of loans, guarantees and grants, and included “real money”. The pair met on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a week after the US started peace negotiations with Russia without directly involving Europe. Liquor Enforcement Unit conducts Newman crackdown to reduce alcohol-related harm Liquor Enforcement Unit conducts Newman crackdown to reduce alcohol-related harm A four-day liquor enforcement crackdown was recently conducted in Newman to help local police and reduce the impact of alcohol-related harm in the community. From February 17-20, officers from the Perth Liquor Enforcement Unit conducted full audits to ensure ongoing compliance with liquor licensing conditions. Upwards of 30 inspections were conducted at liquor restricted premises, in addition to several compliance checks for individuals subject to banned drinker orders. A total of 18 infringements were issued under provisions of the Liquor Control Act and 10 litres of alcohol was seized and destroyed. “The Liquor Enforcement Unit is committed to working with licensed venues to ensure the responsible service of alcohol,” Liquor Enforcement Unit inspector Doug Stjepic said. “We have the capability to deploy officers to any district in the State; we will continue to support local efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and the broader community from alcohol-related harm.” On February 17, officers conducted a liquor restricted premises check at a residential address in Newman and it was alleged that an unloaded, unsecured firearm was located inside a hallway cupboard. The .22 bolt action rifle was seized and subsequent inquiries identified that it had been reported stolen during a burglary in Brookton in 2018. A 60-year-old male and 53-year-old female from Newman are assisting police with inquiries. Drivers were also targeted in the operation, with officers conducting a total of 30 vehicle stops in an attempt to combat sly grogging. Two vehicles were impounded for driver’s licence-related offences and 10 traffic infringements were issued as well as 18 work orders for unroadworthy vehicles. On February 19, police stopped a 39-year-old South Hedland man in Newman driving a Toyota Prado who allegedly had three unrestrained children on board and was subject to 14 court-imposed driver’s licence suspensions. A surrender notice was issued to impound the man’s vehicle and he was summonsed to appear in court at a later date. Liquor Enforcement Unit officers also helped Newman detectives during a search warrant operation at a local address. A 37-year-old Newman man was arrested and charged with possession of child exploitation material and breach of a family violence restraining order and will next appear before the Newman Magistrates Court on March 11. Skull of a woman with skull modification found in a Hun-era burial in Pusztataskony, Hungary, that can be directly linked to Xiongnu elite burials from Mongolia. | Credit: Tamás Hajdu, Eötvös Loránd University The origin of the European Huns, a nomadic group that helped topple the Roman Empire, has been shrouded in mystery — until now. A new study of ancient DNA from fifth- to sixth-century Hun skeletons suggests they were a motley crew of mixed origin with a few connections to the Xiongnu Empire in Mongolia. In a study published Monday (Feb. 24) in the journal PNAS, researchers looked at the genomes of 370 skeletons to investigate links between European Huns of the fourth and fifth centuries and Central Asian nomadic groups such as the Xiongnu, whose empire was at its peak from about 200 B.C. to A.D. 100. But they found that the Huns were extremely genetically diverse. The origin of the Huns has been a matter of debate for centuries, with some historians assuming they came from the earlier Xiongnu Empire due to cultural resemblances, such as similar bows and arrows and a similar practice of skull modification. But a 2024 study published in the journal Science Advances showed that the Xiongnu were genetically diverse. In the new study, lead author Guido Gnecchi-Ruscone, an archaeogeneticist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, and colleagues split their genetic dataset into three groups: people from the eastern Eurasian Steppe who were buried during the Xiongnu ******* (between 209 B.C. and A.D. 98), people from Central Asia who died in the second to sixth centuries, and Hun-style burials of people who died in the Carpathian Basin (which encloses modern Hungary) in the late fourth to sixth centuries. The researchers studied these genomes using a method called identity by descent (IBD) segment sharing, which is when two or more people have the same long DNA segments that they each inherited from a common ancestor. Related: 1,600-year-old Hun burial in Poland contains 2 boys, including one with a deformed skull Two gold earrings found in a Hun-era burial in Pusztataskony, Hungary | Credit: András A. Király, Eötvös Loránd University The IBD technique revealed several pairs of related individuals across the three groups, but it found that people within the groups were more closely related to one another. A total of 97 individuals were connected through IBD across the Central Asian steppe and into the Carpathian Basin over four centuries — a finding that suggests people in these nomadic groups maintained trans-Eurasian genetic relationships. Additionally, two Xiongnu individuals buried in high-status graves were found to be the direct ancestors of several Hun-******* individuals — evidence of a genetic link between the two groups. However, most of the Huns the researchers studied carried varying amounts of northeast Asian ancestry. “The population of the Hun realm in Europe was genetically highly heterogeneous,” the researchers wrote in the study, and beyond the few direct genetic linkages, “we do not find evidence for the presence of larger eastern/steppe descent communities in this time *******.” Whereas previous DNA analyses have suggested that marriage alliances that were focused on elite women were important to the Xiongnu, the social practices of the Hun have yet to be studied. “We find both male and female individuals buried in the rare and exceptional Hun ******* Eastern type burials,” Gnecchi-Ruscone told Live Science in an email, but “we didn’t have the right data to explore the social practices of the Hun ******* society that descended from the steppe as there are so few individuals.” RELATED STORIES —‘Princely’ tomb of Hun warrior unearthed in Romania —Attila the Hun raided Rome due to starvation, not bloodlust, study suggests —2,000-year-old gold jewelry from mysterious culture discovered in Kazakhstan One intriguing skeleton, however, is a 35- to 50-year-old Hun woman with an elongated skull who was buried with gold earrings at the site of Pusztataskony in Hungary in the first half of the fifth century. “She is one of the individuals with genetic lineages descending from the Xiongnu ******* elite individuals that we analyzed,” Gnecchi-Ruscone said. This may suggest that the practice of skull modification was handed down over the generations. The researchers concluded that the European Huns, who migrated into Eastern Europe in the 370s, were a genetically and culturally diverse group — a finding that indicates “a more complex process of mobility and admixture than a one-off long-distance migration.” Source link #Ancient #DNA #reveals #mysterious #origins #Huns #sacked #Rome Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Ransomware: on the murky trail of one of the leaders of ****** Basta Ransomware: on the murky trail of one of the leaders of ****** Basta On 20 February, every cyber threat intelligence researcher on the planet discovered a new goldmine – a document of almost 50MB size presented as the history of internal exchanges at the ****** Basta ransomware group. The cross-referencing of the victims of cyber attacks mentioned in this file with known victims and, in some cases, their accounts, has confirmed the authenticity of the document. But there’s more. According to the authors of the leak – which had been waiting to be discovered since 11 February – behind the pseudonym GG is Tramp, one of the leaders of the group, known under this pseudonym since the implosion of Conti in early 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Some of the exchanges on the Matrix instance from which the leak originated refer to Tox conversations which show that Tramp also uses the pseudonym AA. The financial flows confirm this. On 10 April 2023, Tramp made a payment to ugway at the address 1FomikeVrYqivPbQoGYTRNor1mzSPPbbWZ (transaction 11824680b6f06876eb33560354b877801579be9a2ac1d4264e085254cdf76a4d). The address from which the bitcoins in question originated was fed with funds, some of which were used to feed an address known to be linked to Tramp: 16oosqZ7b9vSdiZ8QbWPCoxRkQwQ3T43Bi. It was used from 29 September 2022 to 29 May 2024, with 347 transactions totalling almost 704 bitcoins received over the *******. The same link applies to a payment made by Tramp to tinker at 1FPutCyL6s6uqQVW4eTCoaVQjrFX3bFhde (transaction f11e1af8ea6352b62a50c6611fc0944cbf0fa1d4bf5bbfc22a3f02017f475f25) on 12 February 2024. Dangerous bonds Among those involved in ****** Basta’s activities, one deserves particular attention – an individual using the pseudonym ssd. On 10 November 2023, Tramp asked for an account to be created for him on the group’s Matrix instance. Ssd logged on straight away. He soon became heavily involved – there were 1,640 messages from him in December 2023. Although he mainly speaks Russian, his messages are sometimes interpreted by translation software as being in Bulgarian or Slovakian. On Tox, ssd also uses the pseudonym DD. It is with this that he contacts usernameyy around 7 December 2023. Usernamejj seems to know him and introduces him as a “сетевик”. In fact, his activities seem to be more related to making up malicious code to avoid detection. But ssd won’t be with the group for long – the last message dates from 17 February 2024. After that, radio silence – at least on the Matrix instance of the group. This is because ssd and Tramp already knew each other, potentially for a long time, according to logs provided by an anonymous source on 30 December. These show regular private exchanges on Tox. The earliest available date goes back to the end of October 2022, the most recent to the end of February 2023. In it, Tramp mentions a certain closeness to Royal (now BlackSuit), whose ransomware for ESXi he says he helped develop, or at least the automation of its deployment. He also says that – not necessarily surprisingly – he knows 90% of Conti. On 12 November 2022, Tramp stated that he regularly “supplied” Russian intelligence services, explicitly mentioning the FSB and the GRU, and that he worked a “desk job” with fixed hours. A comeback attempt? In their private exchanges, Tramp and ssd talk in particular about a victim claimed under the ****** Basta brand at the beginning of November 2022 – Mitcon Consultancy & Engineering Services. A month later, it was also claimed on the BianLian website. This was not the only victim claimed by ****** Basta that the two of them discussed privately, without it being developed in the exchanges that have now been disclosed. After his disappearance from the Matrix instance of ****** Basta, ssd seems to have made a comeback, or at least tried to reconnect with Tramp, indirectly. Nickolas appears to have had contact with ssd at the beginning of May 2024 and tries to talk to Tramp about it. He presents him as a big talker who has managed to maintain a particularly high standard of living. Nickolas suggests that ssd managed to make large sums of money by redirecting users to fake online banking sites in order to recover their login details and session tokens. The leaked exchanges do not provide any details of what happened next. Tramp’s financial situation is enviable. Tracking the financial flows linked to his activities reveals, for example, a bitcoin address holding more than 20 bitcoins – worth $2m at the time of writing – 1BhUkxYoZuK5v6u83TgGaFyoJitBw3JapY. This address was fed again on 28 January. It has been in active use since September 2017. But it was also Tramp who controlled the more than 2,000 bitcoins that came from Conti consolidated on 17 January 2023 at the address bc1q77q346n52l0sj46dxfr9sh8xz6nv9uxakexmgq. Tramp wanted? But all may not be rosy. The authors of the recent disclosure have associated a name with the Tramp pseudonym: Oleg Nefedov – this name also appears in the columns of the Armenian media site 168.am. According to sources, Oleg Nefedov was arrested in Armenia on 21 June. The local courts were due to rule on his fate within 72 hours. However, failing to meet this deadline, he was released. The judge responsible for this situation has been sanctioned. Nefodov is reportedly wanted by US authorities for his involvement in multibillion-dollar fraudulent transactions. To date, no indictment against him has been made public by the US Department of Justice. An analysis of the activity associated with the pseudonym GG in exchanges on the Matrix instance of ****** Basta shows a total absence of activity from 21 June 2024 to 2 July inclusive. Uganda probes death of ********* footballer from Vipers Sport Club Uganda probes death of ********* footballer from Vipers Sport Club Police in Uganda are investigating the death of a ********* professional footballer who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala. Abubakar Lawal, 29, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, the police said. They said Lawal’s friend, identified as Omary Naima, had left him in her room – which is part of the mall building – preparing tea before the incident happened. Lawal was a striker playing for local team Vipers Sports Club, which has expressed its sadness for the “untimely passing of our beloved player”. Tributes have been flowing in for the footballer, who has been with the Vipers club since July 2022 after a two-year stint with AS Kigali in Rwanda. Vipers said “Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous”. “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest,” his former team in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, said. “It’s hard to take in that you’re no more Lawal A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed bro,” said Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza. Local media say the matter has left more questions than answers amid conflicting reports of the circumstances of Lawal’s death. Some media had earlier reported that he had died in a motorcycle accident. Police said the exact circumstances of the death were being investigated. “Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” police said. The police have retrieved some items belonging to the deceased player, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets and training kit. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the police added. One sees them return to Vault 13 after a string of successful missions before being permanently ejected by the Vault’s overseer (admittedly for good reasons). The second is the ‘bad’ ending that sees the player character becoming part of the Master’s mutant army, being dipped in FEV and turned into something grotesque. Tim Cain uncovered a third proposal that’s much more light-hearted. Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows Fallout isn’t a peppy, upbeat series with positive themes and jovial sequences. It’s a dark, morbid, and ********** representation of a world beyond an apocalypse, torn apart by nuclear fire and twisted by mutation. It therefore comes as no surprise to learn that Tim Cain’s pitch for the first game’s ending was shot down after being proposed. Related: Tim Cain Revealed Who Launched The First Nukes In a recent video, the industry veteran explained how he wanted Fallout 1 to end: I had pushed for Fallout ending with a party. You’d come back to Vault 13, you’ve gotten the Water Chip, you’ve taken care of the mutant army and the Master, and everybody has a big party for you. There’s cake and balloons. That got rejected. Here’s the full video, which showcases Cain talking about all his proposals over the years that have been pushed away. The Fallout bit is first up in the pecking order: After the dreary events of Fallout’s story, it might have seemed a little bizarre to end with a party, but the canonical ending is something much more depressing entirely. No matter what you do to save the people of Vault 13, you can’t be trusted to stay in there as a dweller because of the example you’ll set for younger residents of the Vault. If you can leave and explore the devastated wasteland, why can’t they? Tim has made his peace with it, but it’s always interesting to know what might have been. Quantum innovation balances on commercial tightrope Quantum innovation balances on commercial tightrope A paper published by Microsoft, which demonstrates a radical new approach that promises to accelerate the path towards commercially viable quantum computing systems, shows the extent of industry innovation. Almost every week sees new research, which moves the dial closer to commercial reality. But quantum computing is still a nascent technology, and some industry watchers predict challenges ahead as technology innovators try to capitalise on being first to market while major pieces of the quantum computing ecosystem are still not complete. The Microsoft paper discusses the development of a quantum chip based on topological qubits. According to Microsoft researchers, the approach would offer more stable qubits, requiring less error correction than what is currently being developed. Companies that can bring quantum computer systems to market can capitalise on the pent-up demand from early adopters, who have bought into the idea that such systems will solve computational problems that are impossible to solve any other way. There is a growing number of application areas, such as in material science and the simulation of wet chemistry experiments at a quantum level that could lead to the development of new catalysts for industrial processes. But this arms race to produce enough qubits to make a commercially useful system needs to be balanced with industry-wide collaboration. In a separate report, Tess Skyrme, principal technology analyst at IDTechEx, noted that quantum computing companies are beginning to shift away from collaborating as they gear up to differentiate the quantum computing products under development. “For many years, the quantum computing market has been able to profess the benefits of collaboration and see success for one company as good for the industry as a whole rather than a competitive disadvantage,” she said. However, according to Skyrme, while many companies continue to celebrate the success of others in the quantum ecosystem, conversations with experts and business leaders in these companies often lead to them identifying the shortcomings in rival technologies. Similarly, modality sub-sectors are also quick to criticise one another. She said: “Companies, to an extent, face a conundrum whereby governments are looking to foster ecosystems and local collaborations – but private funding wants confidence in a differentiated value proposition to others in the field.” Nevertheless, there are plenty of missing pieces that are essential for quantum computing to become commercially viable. Jenni Strabley, vice-president and general manager of compute products at Quantinuum, said: “Partnerships are key to building a complete quantum stack and unlocking transformative possibilities. We appreciate the highly innovative work led by groups in the ***, a global hub of quantum innovation that we’re proud to be a part of.” Datacentre infrastructure for quantum computing One of the new collaborative efforts is being led by Nu Quantum, which has launched the Quantum Datacenter Alliance (QDA). This aims to bring together companies representing different layers of the quantum computing stack that are willing to share ideas on datacentre-scale quantum computers. By collecting complementary perspectives from across the ecosystem, the QDA aims to deliver an open community to discuss the opportunities and challenges on the road to building large, scalable and robust quantum computing services. Simon Phillips, chief technology officer (CTO) at Oxford Quantum Circuits, said: “For quantum computing to truly begin unlocking transformative business value, it cannot work in isolation – continuing to utilise the infrastructure of datacentres will be critical in shaping the future of the quantum industry.” Yuval Boger, chief commercial officer at QuEra, said: “By combining expertise across the quantum stack, the QDA will help drive the innovations needed for datacentre-scale solutions – and accelerate the path to meaningful quantum advantage.” According to Bill Gartner, senior vice-president and general manager of Cisco Optical Systems and Optics, quantum networking will act as a catalyst for distributed quantum computing. He noted that this aligns closely with Cisco’s strategic objectives of creating flexible, high-performance, energy-efficient network solutions. “We are confident that collaborating in the development of this ground-breaking technology can expedite its market entry and unlock transformative business value,” Gartner added. Companies that have signed up to the QDA include Cisco; NTT Data; superconductor quantum company OQC; QphoX, which is developing quantum interfaces to enable networked quantum computation; Quantinuum, which specialises in trapped ion quantum computing; and QuEra, which is developing neutral-atom quantum computing. Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, CEO of Nu Quantum, said: “The interactions we have had with other members have been incredibly enlightening and underline the importance of cross-industry discussion to accelerate the maturity of the quantum computing industry.” Source link #Quantum #innovation #balances #commercial #tightrope Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Canada accuses Indian businessman of foreign interference, disinformation Canada accuses Indian businessman of foreign interference, disinformation A south Edmonton split-level with a brick facade and a spruce out front is the unlikely ********* headquarters of the Indian conglomerate the Srivastava Group. Run by a New Delhi family, the company claims to have offices in Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, where it owns newspaper and oil and gas businesses. But ********* national security officials have alleged the Srivastava Group and its senior executive have also been involved in more secretive activities. According to public records released to Global News, in 2009 India’s intelligence agencies “tasked” the Srivastava Group’s vice chair to influence ********* politicians. Indian intelligence wanted Ankit Srivastava to identify “random Caucasian politicians and attempt to direct them into supporting issues that impacted India,” the ********* Security Intelligence Service wrote. Srivastava was told “to provide financial assistance and propaganda material to the politicians in order to exert influence over them,” CSIS added in the 2015 report. In a subsequent report in 2021, CSIS wrote that Srivastava’s company had been accused of registering fake websites that presented themselves as news outlets, some of them *********. “The objective of these fake media publications is to push a pro-India rhetoric and publish content that is critical of Pakistan,” added the CSIS report, which was classified secret. A ‘serious threat to Canada’ Immigration officials were so concerned Srivastava could taint elections that they declared him a “serious threat to Canada” and barred him from the country. “The information before me continues to suggest that the Srivastava Group maintained multiple fake news websites, some of which purported to be ********* in origin,” the immigration department wrote. “These websites, I argue, could be used to conduct operations in Canada to influence public opinion and the information available to voters, in effect compromising the normal functioning of ********* government and electoral processes.” The case comes as Canada is facing an unprecedented Indian government foreign interference offensive that has allegedly included disinformation, political meddling and violence. Canada’s foreign interference commission wrote in its Jan. 28 report that Indian agents may have provided “illicit financial support” to politicians in an attempt to elect pro-India candidates or gain influence over them. The inquiry did not name names but the government’s allegations about Srivastava, and his responses, are detailed in hundreds of pages of public documents filed in the Federal Court in Ottawa. The records show ********* officials have taken the fight against Indian foreign interference and disinformation to a new front: the immigration system. CSIS declined to comment. But Srivastava has argued his innocence for almost a decade, and two rulings from the bench have gone his way, most recently last month. “The allegations against him are based on unreasonable inferences which are unsubstantiated and from unreliable sources,” his lawyer Lorne Waldman said. The Indian Executive and the Intelligence Officers Previous Image Next Image Close Modal Gallery A 42-year-old businessman, Srivastava was born in India, studied in Geneva and honeymooned in Bora Bora with his ********* bride, who sponsored him to immigrate as her spouse. “My husband is a successful business owner in India and would like to expand his business in Canada in the field of media and natural gas exploration,” she wrote in her 2014 application. “He has already started the research of expanding his newspaper in Canada with the name of ********* Politics Today, where this media would target majorly on activities of the government.” Ankit Srivastava, vice-chair of Srivastava Group. Federal Court Before granting him residence, ********* officials interviewed Srivastava at the High Commission in New Delhi on June 16, 2015. CSIS sent its security screening report to the Canada Border Services Agency a month later. The CSIS report said Srivastava had admitted he met frequently with India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) and foreign intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He “revealed that he was tasked by RAW to covertly influence ********* government representatives and agencies on behalf of the Indian government,” CSIS added. “Mr. Srivastava stated that the guidance from RAW included that he was to provide financial assistance and propaganda material to the politicians in order to exert influence on them.” “As an example,” CSIS continued, “Mr. Srivastava stated that he was tasked to convince politicians that funding from Canada was being sent to Pakistan to support terrorism.” India has long complained that ********* Sikhs who support the separatist Khalistan movement send money to armed groups in Pakistan that conduct attacks in India. “Furthermore, Mr. Srivastava stated that RAW had also tasked him to meet with government officials in Belgium and Canada in an effort to influence their views in favour of the Indian government.” CSIS said Srivastava met with the “IB and RAW handlers outside of Canada at least every two months and that the last time he met with them was in May 2015.” He “emphasized that he had no choice but to cooperate with RAW and IB,” the CSIS report added, but “he had not been successful in his efforts.” Calling the matter a “gross misunderstanding,” Srivastava denied he was told to finance politicians, but said Indian intelligence “offered to compensate me for my assistance.” “But I refused this flatly.” “The requests by the RAW and IB essentially amounted to a request for me to lobby ********* politicians to influence them in favour of India’s policies,” he wrote. “Their requests were not to spy or provide information. It was to influence their views in favour of India. Even so, I refused their requests.” He claimed his meetings with the intelligence officers were “in my capacity as a journalist” since his company owns the New Delhi Times newspaper. As editor-in-chief, Srivastava claimed he only interacted with IB and RAW officers “as a media person for the purposes of gathering news.” (Asked about his publication, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said it was not among the major news sources tracked in its annual survey of Indian media.) He also argued he had only received a summary of his interview with ********* officials in New Delhi rather than a transcript, and disagreed with the characterization of his statements. Regardless, Canada’s immigration department refused Srivastava’s application for permanent residence, alleging there were reasonable grounds to believe he was involved in espionage. He appealed to the Federal Court and in 2020, a judge sided with him: His application was sent back to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for another assessment. “The court found that there was insufficient evidence to meet the very low requirements to find someone inadmissible and rejected IRCC’s finding related to his alleged membership in Indian intelligence,” his lawyer said in a statement to Global News. By then, however, Srivastava was facing new allegations. The ‘Disinformation Campaigns’ Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office with U.S. President Donald Trump, Feb. 13, 2025. (Photo/Alex Brandon). The Srivastava Group describes itself as one of India’s fastest-growing business houses, with a “leadership position” in “the key industries that drive economic growth.” Those include natural resources, clean energy, aerospace, consulting, health care, media and publishing, according to its website. Its headquarters, however, uses the same New Delhi address Srivastava listed as his residence on his immigration forms, while the ********* office is an Alberta home owned by his in-laws. The modest Edmonton house is listed in corporate records as the office of three Srivastava Group businesses: the New Delhi Times Inc., A2N Energy and A2N International Trading Corp. Srivastava and his wife are the only officers of all three, according to Alberta and federal records. The corporate mission of the Srivastava Group is to publish “content that educates” and “build healthier lives,” but it has been accused of activities Canada deemed unhealthy to democracy. In 2019 and 2020, EU DisinfoLab, a Brussels-based collective that investigates disinformation, released reports linking the Srivastava Group to “a pro-India influence network.” “The operation’s mission is to discredit nations in conflict with India in Asia, in particular Pakistan but also to a lesser extent China,” EU DisinfoLab reported. Using fake news sites and non-profit organizations, the scheme allegedly sought to “improve the perception of India,” and secure the support of international institutions. Methods allegedly included impersonating United Nations-accredited non-profit groups and using fake media, some of it targeting South-Asian populations in Canada. Based on the allegations, immigration authorities told Srivastava in 2022 that allowing him to immigrate would be contrary to Canada’s interests. He was a major player in the Srivastava Group, which “has engaged in a number of disinformation campaigns” since 2005, the immigration section wrote. “Fake media outlets linked to the Srivastava Group in Europe include EP Today, EU Chronicle, the Times of Geneva, and 4 News Agency,” they wrote. Sixteen of the websites were “designed to look like local ********* news websites,” the report on Srivastava read, citing a 2019 CBC story. The websites promoted pro-India messaging and amplified fake or misleading articles about India’s rivals, the ********* immigration report said. The report also noted that a company called Aglaya Scientific Aerospace Technology Systems used the same New Delhi address as the Srivastava Group and was owned by Srivastava’s brother. Aglaya sells “information warfare” tools such as malware and intrusion software that can be used to disrupt critical infrastructure and steal commercial, government and military secrets, it said. The company had done business with groups implicated in state-sponsored hacking and surveillance targeting pro-democracy activists and political leaders of Canada’s allies, the immigration section said. Aglaya did not respond to requests for comment. CBSA report on Ankit Srivastava. The government pursued a different strategy in 2022, alleging he was a security threat for, among other things, disinformation. Federal Court Allowing Srivastava to resettle in Canada would further the Srivastava Group’s ability to pursue “disinformation operations in Canada to the detriment of the national interest and national security,” the government report continued. “Fake news and disinformation can have a significant adverse impact on ********* civil discourse, policymaking, and government relationships,” the immigration department wrote. “As it appears that the Srivastava Group’s disinformation campaigns have already targeted Canada’s South Asian populations in the past, I am concerned that your presence in Canada could contribute to compromising the integrity of ********* electoral processes.” Srivastava countered that his company had “never engaged in deliberately disseminating disinformation” and denied any role in his brother’s company. “I have not conducted any disinformation campaigns in Canada,” he wrote. “I have never undertaken any activity that might harm Canada since my family is Proudly ********* and I, too, plan to join them in their allegiance to Canada.” He questioned the reliability of reports by EU DisinfoLab, which he said had faced “legal sanction and criticism” of its work. They did not cite evidence about the alleged connection between the organizations featured in the report and the Srivastava Group, he said. Nor did the reports provide evidence the Srivastava Group disseminated falsehoods, he continued, insisting criticism of Pakistan’s human rights abuses was not disinformation. “Moreover, even if the allegation that the Srivastava Group disseminated false information about Pakistan were true, it is not clear how this would make the applicant a danger to the security of Canada.” EU DisinfoLab dismissed Srivastava’s criticism of its work, which was widely covered by news outlets ranging from the BBC to Vice and raised at Canada’s foreign interference commission. “We stand firmly and unequivocally by our report and its findings,” said Gary Machado, EU DisinfoLab’s managing director. “In the coming weeks, we will be publishing additional open-source evidence in response to this umpteenth attempt to discredit our work.” Disinformation expert Marcus Kolga said EU DisinfoLab is a “very credible” organization, and its research “exposed a really vast network that was developed by this Indian company.” Allowing a foreign national involved in such activity to immigrate would be “hugely problematic” for Canada, particularly for communities targeted by these operations, he said. But after he was again rejected by Canada’s immigration system, Srivastava took his case back to the court and the judge ruled on Jan. 31, 2025 that it was unreasonable to connect him to his brother’s company. The case was sent back to the immigration department for yet another review. The court decision did not address the disinformation allegations. The Canada Border Services Agency declined to comment. “Simply put the Federal Court on two occasions has rejected assertions by IRCC that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr. Srivastava is inadmissible,” his lawyer said. Former Edmonton office of A2N Energy, part of the Srivastava Group. Global News Since the Srivastava Group was publicly linked to disinformation allegations, its website has gone offline. Emails sent to the company were returned as undeliverable. Nobody answered the front door last week at the house identified as its ********* branch. The downtown Edmonton suite that A2N Energy called its office had been emptied. Although it once claimed to own 4,000 hectares of Alberta oil and gas rights with more than a billion barrels, A2N Energy put its interests in the Calling Lake West, Judy Creek and Therien areas of the province up for ***** in 2023. According to Corporations Canada, A2N International Trading is facing pending dissolution for non-compliance. The Alberta government struck the New Delhi Times from its corporate registry in 2023 for failing to file annual reports. Nearly 40% of contracts canceled by DOGE are expected to produce no savings Nearly 40% of contracts canceled by DOGE are expected to produce no savings Nearly 40% of the federal contracts that the Trump administration claims to have canceled as part of its signature cost-cutting program aren’t expected to save the government any money, the administration’s own data shows. The Department of Government Efficiency run by Elon Musk last week published an initial list of 1,125 contracts that it terminated in recent weeks across the federal government. Data published on DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts” shows that more than one-third of the contract cancellations, 417 in all, are expected to yield no savings. That’s usually because the total value of the contracts has already been fully obligated, which means the government has a legal requirement to spend the funds for the goods or services it purchased and in many cases has already done so. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “It’s like confiscating used ammunition after it’s been shot when there’s nothing left in it. It doesn’t accomplish any policy objective,” said Charles Tiefer, a retired University of Baltimore law professor and expert on government contracting law. “Their terminating so many contracts pointlessly obviously doesn’t accomplish anything for saving money.” Dozens of them were for already-paid subscriptions to The Associated Press, Politico and other media services that the administration said it would discontinue. Others were for research studies that have been awarded, training that has taken place, software that has been purchased and interns that have come and gone. An administration official said it made sense to cancel contracts that are seen as potential dead weight, even if the moves do not yield any savings. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. In all, DOGE data says the 417 contracts in question had a total value of $478 million. Dozens of other canceled contracts are expected to yield little if any savings. “It’s too late for the government to change its mind on many of these contracts and walk away from its payment obligation,” said Tiefer, who served on the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tiefer said DOGE appeared to be taking a “slash and burn” approach to cutting contracts, which he said could damage the performance of government agencies. He said savings could be made instead by working with agency contracting officers and inspectors general to find efficiencies, an approach the administration has not taken. DOGE says the overall contract cancellations are expected to save more than $7 billion so far, an amount that has been questioned as inflated by independent experts. The canceled contracts were to purchase a wide range of goods and services. The Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded a contract in September to purchase and install office furniture at various branches. While the contract does not expire until later this year, federal records show the agency had already agreed to spend the maximum $567,809 with a furniture company. The U.S. Agency for International Development negotiated a $145,549 contract last year to clean the carpet at its headquarters in Washington. But the full amount had already been obligated to a firm that is owned by a Native American tribe based in Michigan. Another already-spent $249,600 contract went to a Washington, D.C., firm to help prepare the Department of Transportation for the recent transition from the Biden to the Trump administration. Some of the canceled contracts were intended to modernize and improve the way government works, which would seem to be at odds with DOGE’s cost-cutting mission. One of the largest, for instance, went to a consulting firm to help carry out a reorganization at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, which led the agency’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The maximum $13.6 million had already been obligated to Deloitte Consulting LLP for help with the restructuring, which included closing several research offices. ___ Foley reported from Iowa City, Iowa.
