  1. Winter AD 124/5 – Hadrian tours the Peloponnese (part 1) and visits Megara, Argos and Mantineia (#Hadrian1900) FOLLOWING HADRIAN Winter AD 124/5 – Hadrian tours the Peloponnese (part 1) and visits Megara, Argos and Mantineia (#Hadrian1900) FOLLOWING HADRIAN After attending the Eleusinian Mysteries (see here), Hadrian embarked on a brief tour of the Peloponnese accompanied by Sabina. His presence in several renowned cities during this ******* is well documented, although no exact date has been recorded. Wherever the imperial court went, ancient cities received the Emperor’s generosity since his desire was, among other things, to improve affairs in Greece. In return, names were changed to honour the donor, statues were erected, and temples were dedicated. Hadrian’s first stop was at the Dorian city of Megara, a long-standing rival of Athens located to the west. Hadrian’s Journey through Achaea in AD 124-125. Map created by Simeon Netchev for Following Hadrian (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). Megara was one of the four districts of Attica, situated between Attica and the isthmus of Corinth, and it controlled the trade routes connecting the Peloponnesus and Central Greece. According to Pausanias, the Megarians said that their town owed its origin to Car, the son of Phoroneus, who built the Acropolis called ‘Karia’ on the easterly side of the city and underground caves for the cult of Demeter called megara, from which the place derived its name. After a promising start, during which Megara distinguished itself by founding Byzantium and the Hyblaean Megara in Sicily, internal turmoil soon erupted, causing Megara to decline and be surpassed by Athens. During the civil war between Pompey and Caesar, the city found itself on the losing side and faced Caesar’s retribution. The second century AD brought a new ******* of relative growth, especially under Hadrian, when many public works were carried out. However, despite Hadrian’s best efforts, Megara remained impoverished. According to Pausanias, “not even the emperor Hadrian could make more prosperous.” (1.36.3). Megara subsequently fell to the status of a minor town during the Roman Empire and, in late Antiquity, faced invasions from the Goths that devastated the town. On Hadrian’s visit in 124/5, the Megarians created a new phyle (tribe), a fourth one called Hadrianidai, in honour of the Emperor’s philhellenic largesse towards the cities of Central Greece. Megarian inscriptions from the late 130s hailed Hadrian as ‘their founder, lawgiver, benefactor and patron’. He had clearly implemented reforms as well as building work. Sabina was also honoured at Megara as a ‘New Demeter’ (IG VII 74), from which one may guess that she had accompanied her husband. Julius Candidus (suffect consul in 129) is mentioned as the supervisor of the ********* of a set of statues in honour of Hadrian and Sabina by the people of Megara. Each tribe dedicated a statue of the imperial couple, although only two bases for Sabina survive. Julius Candidus was listed as the epimeletes in charge of this project, and Aiskhron, son of Damokrates, was stratagos. For the twice hailed as Imperator Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus Olympios Pythias Panhellenios, founder and lawgiver and benefactor, at the commission of the most excellent proconsul Julius Canditus, when Aischronos, son of Damokrates, was acting as strategos over the Damokratians. By the Dymanes. (IG VII 70) For Queen Sabina Augusta, new Demeter, wife of Emperor Hadrian, by (the phyle) Hadrianidai, at the commission of the most excellent proconsul Julius Canditus, when Aischronos, son of Damokrates, was acting as strategos over the Damokratians. (IG VII 74) Megara’s most important divinity was Demeter, closely connected with the city’s foundation. Pausanias tells us that Demeter wandered through Megara in search of Persephone (Paus. 1.43.2). He also mentions a sanctuary of Demeter Thesmophoros (Lawgiver) on the Acropolis of Alcathous, the western of the two Megarian city hills (1.41.6), as well as a sanctuary of Demeter Malophorus (Sheep-bearer or Apple-bearer) at Nisaea, the port town of Megara. The Cave of Demeter on the slope of the Karia Acropolis. Pausanias specifically mentions that Hadrian, among other benefactions, completely rebuilt the former brick temple of Apollo Pythios, the Pythion, in “white stone” at Megara (1.42.5) and was honoured with the title “Pythios” (IG VII 70). Apollo was Megara’s chief male god, and his temple was on the western Acropolis. According to Pausanias, three wooden cult statues of ebony stood in the Pythion, located on the Acropolis of Alcathous. Apollo was said to have assisted Alcathous in the construction of the town’s walls. In honour of this god, the Lesser Pythaeia games were held in Megara. They were associated with the temple and continued to be celebrated in the Hadrianic ******* (Boatwright, 2000). Furthermore, careful copies of Megara’s late Hellenistic coinage bearing the image of Apollo were produced in very small numbers during the reign of Hadrian. They likely celebrated the imperial visit or his benefaction towards the temple of Apollo (source). Megarian archaizing coins from the Hadrianic ******* (RPC III, 409) with the head of Apollo on the observe and a four-stringed kithara on the reverse with the legend Μεγαρέων (of the Megarians). Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris (France) Pausanias also tells us that the dangerous rocky road from Megara to Corinth along the Saronic Gulf, previously only passable on foot, was rendered passable for carriages. (1.44.6). Known in antiquity as the Scironian Road, this famous pass was named after the wicked Sciron, a bandit who robbed travellers passing over the Scironian cliffs and was killed by Theseus by throwing him into the sea. An inscription dated to AD 125 (IG VII 69) probably belonged to the first milestone of this road. Hadrian may indeed have issued an edict ordering road improvements all over Achaea and Macedonia at this time (Birley, 1997). View of the Scironian cliffs from the beach near Megara. “The road called Scironian to this day and named after Sciron, was made by him when he was war minister of the Megarians, and originally they say was constructed for the use of active men. But the emperor Hadrian broadened it, and made it suitable even for chariots to pass each other in opposite directions.” (1.44.6) Milestone belonging to the first milestone of the road from Megara to Corinth widened by Hadrian. Dated to AD 125. (IG VII 69) Archaeological Museum of Megara. From Megara, the imperial party proceeded over the Isthmus to Epidaurus, the most celebrated centre of the cult of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. Epidaurus was an obvious destination for the religiously interested emperor, who had just initiated a large-scale reconstruction of the Hellenistic Asklepieion at Pergamon (see here). Hadrian’s visit to the sanctuary had a definite effect on the healing sanctuary as the emperor enforced new regulations concerning the appointment of religious ministers and the recurrence of the Asklepieia. The minting in Epidaurus was probably linked to Hadrian’s visit. Most Epidaurian coins had Asklepieia, the athletic and dramatic festival held every four years, as part of the reverse legend (RPC III, 396A). Hadrian’s visit is attested in at least three inscriptions (IG IV² 1 606, IG IV² 1 607, AE 1974, 611) in which he is called “saviour and benefactor”. The city erected a statue to him in AD 124, and a new era in the local calendar began this year. However, no details of his benefactions have survived. In the third year of the consecration of Zeus Olympios and the foundation of the Panhellenion, the year of Trajan Hadrian Caesar‘s visit, when the priest of Asclepius was Eutychus, son of Eutychus, grandson of Eutychus; in place of him Leonidus son of Perigenes; Stephanos son of Eutychus was the fire-bearer (pyrphoros) of Asclepius and Epione. (IG IV² 1 384) A portrait head and a loricated torso have been identified as belonging to a statue of Hadrian. Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus. The religious centre at Epidaurus included baths, hotels, and residences for the priest-physicians, a tholos building, temples, stoas, a gymnasium, a palaestra, a stadium, and a 14,000-seat theatre. Pausanias admired the theatre for its symmetry and beauty (2.27.5). The Temple of Asclepius, built in the 4th century BC, was a Doric peripteros, featuring a row of tuff columns (6 x 11) surrounding it, partly clad in marble. The lost cult statue of Asclepius, which Pausanias describes as “half the size of the Olympian Zeus at Athens, made of ivory and gold” (2.27.2). In front of the temple stood the monumental altar. The sanctuary experienced a resurgence in the mid-2nd century AD when Sextus Julius Maior, an aristocrat from Nysa in Asia Minor, funded a rebuilding programme. New deities were also introduced into the sanctuary: Ammon, Sarapis, and Isis, as indicated by the discoveries of dedicatory inscriptions. The theatre was built of local limestone in the second half of the 4th century BC. It was celebrated in antiquity for its beauty and harmonious proportions. The foundations of the Temple of Asklepios, built in the 4th centuy BC. A prominent member of a distinguished family in Epidaurus during Hadrian’s visit was Gnaeus Cornelius Pulcher, the great-grandson of Gnaeus Cornelius Nicatas, the founder of the imperial cult at Epidaurus and twice priest of Augustus (IG IV²,1 652). He had been procurator of Epirus at least ten years earlier and was to become the first archon (SEG 26:253) of Hadrian’s Panhellenion and hold the priesthood of Hadrian Panhellenios. One may infer that this cultivated person attracted Hadrian’s attention (Birley, 1997). Pulcher is the earliest attested high priest of Greece and Helladarch, the chairman of the Council of the Achaians, a pair of lifetime posts that appear to have always been held together. The former was responsible for the imperial cult of the province of Achaia, while the latter oversaw that of the Achaian League, one of several leagues of Greek cities within the province. From Epidaurus, Hadrian and his entourage went to Troezen and Hermione, situated on the Argolid’s eastern shore. Troezen is where the mythical king and founder-hero of Athens, Theseus, was born, and his son Hippolytus died. On the occasion of the Emperor’s visit to the city, a local benefactor, Eision, son of Timotheos, paid a significant amount of money to make the roads passable for carriages prior to what was described as ‘the long-awaited visit of the greatest emperor’ (IG IV 758). Everything suggests that this was Hadrian, particularly as the small town of Hermione, located south of Troezen, erected a statue in honour of Sabina (IG IV 702). The Argolid landscape around Troezen. Hippolytus was worshipped as a hero at Troezen. Pausanias saw his temple and cult statue located outside the city walls. He informs us that annual sacrifices were made and that every virgin girl cut off a lock of hair for him before her marriage, dedicating it to his shrine (2.32). Nearby was the Asklepieion, comprising a propylon, a small prostyle temple, a fountain house, and a large ceremonial banquet hall with four wings arranged around a central peristyle court surrounded by rooms. Troezen, because of its favourable geographical position, enjoyed particular prosperity through the Roman ******* and produced coins only under Commodus, showing Theseus fighting the Minotaur in Crete (RPC IV.1, 7943). However, Athens minted coins during the reigns of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, showing on the reverse Theseus lifting the stone to find the gnorismata, the sword and the sandals left by his father Aegeus under the rock (RPC IV.1, 8198). Today, a large hewn stone standing near the entrance to the sanctuary of Hippolytus is believed to be the rock of Theseus, as reported by the historian Pausanias (2.32.7). “On the road that leads through the mountains to Hermione is a spring of the river Hyllicus, originally called Taurius (Bull-like), and a rock called the Rock of Theseus; when Theseus took up the boots and sword of Aegeus under it, it, too, changed its name, for before it was called the altar of Zeus Sthenius (Strong). Near the rock is a sanctuary of Aphrodite Nymphia (Bridal), made by Theseus when he took Helen to wife.” The foundations of the 4th century BC Temple of Hippolytus with the Troezenian Asklepieon in the background and the temple of Aphrodite Kataskopia (“the spying one”). Theseus Stone in Troezen. The imperial party then travelled through Troezen and Hermione to reach Argos. Not far from the desolate ruins of Mycenae stood the famous sanctuary of Hera, the queen of the gods and patron deity of Argos. According to Pausanias, Hadrian dedicated a gold peacock adorned with precious gems to the goddess. A peacock was represented on the reverse of one of the coins minted in Argos under Hadrian (RPC III, 377). There is an altar upon which is wrought in relief the fabled marriage of ***** and Heracles. This is of silver, but the peacock dedicated by the Emperor Hadrian is of gold and gleaming stones. He dedicated it because they hold the bird to be sacred to Hera. (2.17.6) The Argive Heraion was built over the remains of a Mycenaean settlement, and archaeological evidence suggests that cultic activity at the Heraion dates back as early as the 10th century BC. The sanctuary occupied three artificial terraces on a site above the Argive Plain. The upper terrace was constructed using large Cyclopean blocks, possibly dating to the late Geometric ******* (760–700 BC). The Old Temple of Hera was one of the earliest colonnaded temples in Greece. It was destroyed by fire in 423 BC and has almost completely disappeared. After the fire, a New Temple of Hera was built by the architect Eupolemos of Argos. The famous chryselephantine statue of Hera by Polykleitos was housed in the temple’s cella. Strabo compared it to Pheidias’s giant chryselephantine sculpture of Zeus at Olympia, saying it was smaller and cheaper to make (8.732). The Heraion continued to be used well into the Roman Empire due to dedications made by Augustus, Nero and Hadrian. Before the temple’s entrance stood a statue of Orestes, identified as Augustus by an inscription; Nero offered a golden crown and purple robe to Hera (Paus. 2.17.3). Also, archaeological findings reveal features of the north stoa, and new temples were constructed during the Roman era. Overall view of the New Temple of Hera, built by the architect Eupolemos from Argos after the fire in the 5th century BC. The Peacock is one of the birds sacred to Hera. The feathers are a tribute to the hundred-eyed Giant Argus who once guarded Io when she was transformed into a cow. A number of bronze coins from Argos allude to the emperor’s visit and building work there. They depict a laureate Hadrian with the legend ΑΥΤ ΑΔΡΙ-ΑΝΟϹ ΚΤΙϹΤΗϹ (Emperor Hadrian the Founder), while the reverses have images of gods and heroes, including Zeus, Apollo, Heracles, Danae, Diomedes and Perseus followed by the inscription Ἀργείων (of the Argives). Perhaps building the new aqueduct for the city with a nymphaeum at its termination justifies the epithet ktistes. Hadrian funded an aqueduct that improved the city’s water supply by transporting water from the surrounding hills, approximately 30km away. Eight fragments of an inscription found in the west basin of the Nymphaeum refer to that gift. The document is dated to AD 124 and informs us that Hadrian acquired the necessary land for the construction of the aqueduct. W. Vollgraff, who cleared the nymphaeum in 1906, restored the Greek inscription as follows (Vollgraff, 1944): Emperor Caesar Hadrian Augustus, pontifex maximus, year eight of his tribunician power, consul for the third time, father of the father-land, son of the divine Trajan Parthicus, grandson of the divine Nerva, constructed the aqueduct for the city of Argos at his own expense, having bought the land… feet long, fifty feet wide. An over-life-size, heroically nude statue of Hadrian comes from the Nymphaeum. Hadrian is depicted wearing a paludamentum draped around his left forearm and gathered over his left shoulder. His right arm is raised, while he holds a sword in his left hand (see here). The area of Argos was known for its scarcity of water. According to mythology, the daughter of Danaos, one of the founders of the city of Argos, suggested a way of supplying the city with water through the piercing and construction of wells. By drawing water from the depths of the earth, thirsty Argos became a city abundant in water. The Hadrianic aqueduct was one of the two aqueducts built to supply water to the city. The Argive aqueduct built by Hadrian in AD 124. It carried water from the Kephalovryso Springs, 30 kilometres away. The Hadrianic Nymphaeum, fed by the aqueduct, is carved into the rock of Larissa hill overlooking Argos. The monumental fountain consisted of two tanks carved into the rock and had a superstructure of bricks and an arched roof. The whole building would no doubt have been covered in marble revetment. Based on a fragmentary inscription found in 1930 in the northern part of the theatre’s orchestra, Hadrian has also been credited with restoring the theatre at Argos after its devastation by fire (Vollgraff, 1944). The theatre stage was extensively enlarged in length, depth, and height. Carved into the lower rocky slopes of the Larisa Hill in the Hellenistic *******, it had a seating capacity of around 20,000 spectators. The smaller and older theatre, adjacent to the Hellenistic theatre, was renovated, roofed, and converted into an Odeon, probably during the reign of Hadrian, although it underwent alterations later in the 3rd century AD. A poorly preserved mosaic in the orchestra, no longer visible, depicts a table for prizes at the Nemean and Heraian games. The Odeon seated 1,800 people and was thought to be used for meetings of the Argive assembly (called the aliaia) and perhaps for music and drama. The neighbouring brick-faced bathhouse, part of a complex dedicated to the worship of Asklepios (Aupert, 1987), has also been dated to the Hadrianic *******. The Asklepieion is referred to by Pausanias (2.23.4). The Hellenistic Theatre was carved into the lower rocky slopes of the Larisa and renovated ca. AD 120. The Hadrianic bathhouse. According to Pausanias, Hadrian also reintroduced boys’ horse race into the winter Nemean games, which had fallen into disuse, and moved them to Argos (6.16.4). By the time of Hadrian, the Nemeia were well established at Argos as the city took control of the games in 271 BC and permanently moved the musical events to its own theatre. The winter games seem to have been held in Argos during the last days of December, and Hadrian may have attended in person (Birley, 1997). A coin struck in Argos during the Hadrianic ******* commemorates the Nemean Games (RPC III, 368). From Argos, Hadrian and his entourage proceeded with their journey into the northern Arcadian plain, heading towards Mantineia. Pausanias’ description of the city includes three distinct references confirming Hadrian’s presence, the first being that Hadrian commanded the revival of the city’s original name. Mantineia had been called Antigoneia for over three hundred years in honour of Macedonian king Antigonus II Doson (8.8.12). Indeed, Mantineia claimed to have founded Bithynion-Claudiopolis, the hometown of Antinous in Bithynia. Ten generations afterwards, when Hadrian became Emperor, he took away from the Mantineans the name imported from Macedonia and gave back to their city its old name of Mantineia. (Paus. 8.8.12) The plain of Mantineia. The territory of Mantineia was bounded on the west by Mount Maenalus and on the east by Mount Artemisium (as seen in this image), which separated it from Argolis. The walls of Mantineia. Hadrian likely met Antinous during his tour of Bithynia the year before (see here) and included him in his entourage. The city of Mantineia would later honour Antinous with particular fervour, becoming a centre for his worship. Annual Antinoeia mysteries and games, the Antinoeia, celebrated every four years, would be established after AD 130. An inscription from Alexandria Troas refers to Hadrian’s agonistic calendar (see here), noting that the games at Mantineia were held in the 4th Olympic year, between the games at Isthmia and the Olympieia of Athens (Hervás, 2020). The Antinoeia were held in the stadium outside the city walls at the foot of Mount Alesium, attracting athletic, poetical and musical competitors from all over the east and offering substantial prizes. An inscription discovered in Mantineia also mentions the games held in honour of Antinous (IG V.2, 313). Pausanias reports that a room in the gymnasium contained multiple Antinous statues and paintings, most of which depicted him in the guise of Dionysus. Antinous too was deified by them; his temple is the newest in Mantineia. He was a great favourite of the Emperor Hadrian. I never saw him in the flesh, but I have seen images and pictures of him. He has honours in other places also, and on the Nile is an Egyptian city named after Antinous. He has won worship in Mantineia for the following reason. Antinous was by birth from Bithynium beyond the river Sangarius, and the Bithynians are by descent Arcadians of Mantineia. (Paus. 8.9.7) The Emperor established his worship in Mantineia also; mystic rites are celebrated in his honour each year, and games every four years. There is a building in the gymnasium of Mantineia containing statues of Antinous, and remarkable for the stones with which it is adorned, and especially so for its pictures. Most of them are portraits of Antinous, who is made to look just like Dionysus. (Paus. 8.9.8) The so-called “Youth of Mantineia”, most probably Antinous. The Bithynian boy is depicted nude except for a chlamys over his shoulders. The marble statue was discovered in 1886 in the vicinity of ancient Mantineia. National Archaeological Museum (Inv. no. 698) The stadium where the Antinoeia were held stood near the Archaic sanctuary of Poseidon Hippios (of the horse), said to have been made of oak and built by the famous mythical architects Agamedes and Trophonios, who also constructed the temple of Apollo at Delphi. The temple, however, seems to have fallen into ruin in the Roman era. Pausanias reports that Hadrian ordered the construction of a new temple around the existing site. He appointed guards to supervise the workers and ensure no one entered the ancient shrine or disturbed its ruins. There are roads leading from Mantineia into the rest of Arcadia, and I will go on to describe the most noteworthy objects on each of them. On the left of the highway leading to Tegea there is, beside the walls of Mantineia, a place where horses race, and not far from it is a race-course, where they celebrate the games in honour of Antinous. (Paus. 8.10.1) By the foot of the mountain is the sanctuary of Horse Poseidon, not more than six stades distant from Mantineia. About this sanctuary, I, like everyone else who has mentioned it, can write only what I have heard. The modern sanctuary was built by the Emperor Hadrian, who set overseers over the workmen, so that nobody might look into the old sanctuary, and none of the ruins be removed. He ordered them to build around the new temple. Originally, they say, this sanctuary was built for Poseidon by Agamedes and Trophonius, who worked oak logs and fitted them together. (Paus. 8.10.2) The Temple of Poseidon Hippios was identified by French archaeologist Gustave Fougères southeast of the polis, near the present village of Milea. Greek archaeologist Dr Theodore Spyropoulos later excavated it from 1985 to 1995, revealing remains of the Archaic temple and important objects, including a clay acroterion bearing Gorgoneion (see here) and horse-headed bronze figures. The excavations also uncovered inscriptions dedicated to Poseidon Hippios -Ποσειδωνος Ιππιου- (IG V 2, 276). Antinous appears on medallions of Mantineia (RPC III, 325) commissioned by a magistrate or notable citizen called Vetourius, who is otherwise unknown. The reverse depicts a horse and the legend ΤΟΙϹ ΑΡΚΑϹΙ (for the Arcadians). The medallions were probably issued for distribution at the games held in Mantineia in honour of Antinous after his death, and the horse represented on these coins may be related to the Arcadian cult of Poseidon Hippios. The legend ΤΟΙϹ ΑΡΚΑϹΙ could indicate the Arcadian Koinon (Hervás, 2020). Antinous Medallic Æ39 of Mantineia, Arcadia. Financed by Vetourios, circa AD 134. BETOYPIOC, bare-chested heroic three-quarters-length bust of Antinous to right, with slightly inclined head / TOIC APKACI, stallion stepping to right, with right forepaw raised and head slightly inclined. (link) Hadrian had a strong personal interest in Mantineia and undertook remarkable initiatives, transforming the city through his ambitious projects. Additionally, perhaps in person in 125, he composed an epigram for the Theban general Epaminondas (c. 418-362 BC), which was inscribed on a stele placed at the leader’s tomb beside the old inscription in Boiotian dialect. Epaminondas was buried on the battlefield, where he died in victory, sometime around 362 BC, after the Battle of Mantineia between Thebes and Sparta. Epaminondas was commemorated in Arcadia, which he had helped to free. Pausanias describes his funerary monument as a tomb surmounted by a column on which a shield with the image of a dragon was suspended, representing his clan (Paus. 8.11.8). Sadly, Pausanias did not record Hadrian’s epigram, but he recorded the inscription in elegiac verse on the statue of Epaminondas (Paus. 9.15.6): By my counsels was Sparta shorn of her glory, And holy Messene received at last her children. By the arms of Thebes was Megalopolis encircled with walls, And all Greece won independence and freedom. The imperial party would have continued south to Sparta with a stop at Tegea southeast of Arcadia. Tegea, like Epidaurus, changed its calendar to mark a new era from the date of his visit (IG V,2 51). An inscription referring to him as ‘saviour and founder’ suggests that he provided benefits to the city (see here). Tegea was the eternal rival of Mantineia, an ally of Sparta during the Peloponnesian War. The city was famous for its sanctuary to the goddess Athena Alea, which had a large 4th-century BC Doric temple designed by the famous sculptor and architect Skopas from Paros. The temple was still in use in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Tegea seems to have been an important city in the 2nd century AD. Pausanias declared it was “far superior to all other temples in the Peloponnesus on many grounds, especially for its size” (Paus. 8.45.5). The ruins of the Temple of Athena at Tegea. The temple was constructed in marble and had six columns on each facade and 14 along the long sides. It measured 47 x 22 metres, making it slightly smaller than the great temple of Zeus at Olympia. The emperor would travel further through Greece, visiting Sparta, Corinth, and possibly Olympia, committed to promoting cultural and architectural development throughout the region. 2. Does Assassin’s Creed Shadows Have Early Access? Does Assassin’s Creed Shadows Have Early Access? The continuation of Assassin’s Creed takes us to Japan, and we’re curious to see if we can play hop on a quicker flight and secure Early Access for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ content will come to light soon enough. Ubisoft is looking to vacate the shadows after a turbulent 2024 where nothing went right. The company has seen better times with countless layoffs to XDefiant and other projects announcing their closure hitting hard. But Ubisoft is looking to turn a corner with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Pre-orders are red hot, and interest in Shadows is almost scalding. Let’s see whether potential Early Access has had a say in the game’s pre-release success and hype. Can You Play Assassin’s Creed Shadows Early Access? Guess I’ll have to take measures into my own hands. Credit to Ubisoft There is no Early Access for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and it is set to release simultaneously for everyone. Shadows doesn’t have online multiplayer, so there’s no component for players to get an edge on each other. However, many single-player games are opting to negate Early Access. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 are classic examples of games being made for players. They opted against Early Access, and it seems Ubisoft has decided to follow suit. Do we Know Why Assassin’s Creed Shadows Doesn’t Have Early Access? Curiously, Ubisoft hasn’t revealed why they’ve canceled Assassin’s Creed Shadows Early Access, merely stating that the Collector’s Edition no longer has the early bonus. Thanks to iGame Magazine, we can see the original Discord Q&A addressing the cancelation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Early Access. Under a question about the Collector’s Edition titled “Will I still get the 3 days of Early Access as advertised,” a Ubisoft developer says: “No, there is no Early Access for AC Shadows anymore.“ Is this out of the goodness and thoughtfulness of Ubisoft’s heart? Or is it a way to improve their standing and put gamers before business first? We may never get a proper answer to this question. It looks like we’re all diving into Assassin’s Creed Shadows blind. 3. Digital Estate Planning: How to Prepare Your Social Media Accounts Digital Estate Planning: How to Prepare Your Social Media Accounts How do you want your social media pages, smartphone photos and computer files handled after you die? While property and money distribution are usually at the top of the estate-planning list, don’t forget to leave instructions regarding your digital accounts and assets — so your survivors are left with more than just random bits and pixels from your online presence. Here’s a short guide to getting your digital material in order, as well as advice for dealing with the accounts of those who departed without leaving directions. Create a Digital Directive A law known as the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act, enacted by most states, gives a chosen representative (like your estate’s executor) the authority to manage your electronic affairs. For specific instructions, create a document stipulating how you want your online accounts and all digital content handled when you die or become incapacitated, and keep it with your other estate papers. Giving access to your account user names and passwords will greatly help your representative, but proceed carefully. You will need a safe place to list the credentials for all your financial institutions, as well as for any e-commerce stores, insurance policies, online storage, email, social media platforms, cable and wireless carriers, medical apps, and media subscriptions. The 1Password app can hold all kinds of confidential information.Credit…1Password One way to encrypt and store this sensitive information is to enter it all into a password-manager app. Wirecutter, the product review site owned by The New York Times, recommends 1Password ($3 a month for an individual plan, $5 a month for the shared family plan) or Bitwarden (free, with in-app upgrades). Apple and Google have their own free apps, which save and store passwords on devices running their software. If you want an analog option, print out the list or write everything down in a notebook. Keep it updated, but make sure the list is locked in a home safe or another secured location, as it would be a gold mine for identity thieves. Don’t forget to note the passwords and passcodes needed to get into your password manager app, phone, computer or tablet; most manufacturers can’t bypass a PIN code without erasing the device. Your survivors may need your contact list to tell people you’ve passed, and they may need to keep your phone accessible for any necessary two-factor authentication codes. Designate a Legacy Contact Along with compiling your digital directive and passwords, you should consider adding someone you trust as a “legacy contact” for your Apple, Google, Facebook and other accounts. A legacy contact is the person you choose to directly handle that account after you’re gone. Apple added a legacy contact feature to its software in 2021 and lets you select a manager for your Apple account used with iPhones, iPads and Macs. To set it up, go into your system settings on the device or Mac, select your name and then Sign In & Security, and choose Legacy Contact. Google has an Inactive Account Manager tool for dealing with your Google Account if you are not able to use it. To set it up, visit the Data & Privacy settings of your Google Account. Facebook has a legacy contact setting for designating someone to manage your profile page, as well as a setting to delete your account when the company is notified of your death. For sites that don’t let you designate a person — and that you haven’t left instructions about — your executor typically must contact the company and request that the account be deleted or memorialized (converted to a static page). Apple, Google and Microsoft are among those with account-deletion steps on their sites. Facebook, as well as other social sites, has a tool to download the photos and other content from an account before you delete it, as does Google with its Google Takeout feature. Managing Without Instructions On the other side of process, if you’re the person handling an estate for someone who didn’t plan for their digital legacy, your administration experience may take more time. But even if you did not receive instructions, you should try to shutter social-media profiles and other accounts to avoid misuse on the internet. Just as you would inform financial and insurance firms of the person’s death, you should notify the social media and other companies and request that they close the deceased’s accounts. This typically requires providing a death certificate, an obituary, letters testamentary (court-issued documents given to an estate’s executor), your personal identification and other files. Digitized copies are often accepted. The help sections of Instagram, LinkedIn, Microsoft, PayPal, X, Yahoo and other sites have instructions for account access and closures, as do those of Apple and Google. In many cases, you can request the account’s content like photos and posts, although this may require submitting even more legal documentation to the company. Managing the digital assets of a deceased person without instructions can make a difficult time even harder — which is all the more reason to leave your loved ones everything they need. 4. A child dies of measles in West Texas outbreak A child dies of measles in West Texas outbreak A sign reading “measles testing” is seen as an outbreak in Gaines County, Texas, has raised concerns over its spread to other parts of the state, in Seminole, Texas, U.S., Feb. 25, 2025. Sebastian Rocandio | Reuters A school-age child has died of measles in West Texas, the first death from the disease in a decade in the United States. The child had not been vaccinated against measles, according to the city of Lubbock’s health department. The death, confirmed by Katherine Wells, the Lubbock health department’s director of public health, is part of a fast-moving outbreak that’s infected at least 124 people — mostly children — in rural West Texas. The official tally of people who have been hospitalized is 18, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. That number isn’t up to date, said Dr. Lara Johnson, a pediatrician and the chief medical officer at Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock. Johnson said in an email that her team has cared for “around 20” kids with measles so far. All of those kids, she said, were admitted because they were having trouble breathing. None had been vaccinated against measles. The outbreak has been limited so far to parts of Texas bordering New Mexico. That state has also reported nine measles cases, but officials have not said whether they are connected. This is the first measles death to be reported in the U.S. since 2015, when a Washington woman died. Health officials at the time said she’d likely been exposed at a clinic in a rural part of the state that was experiencing an outbreak. Measles was considered eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 because of widespread use of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two doses of the shot are 97% effective in preventing the disease. Source link #child #dies #measles #West #Texas #outbreak Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for March PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for March RiseNShine21d ago (Edited 21d ago ) I’ve been playing this game and even though i’m not too far in the game, this is a disgrace and i can’t believe this game got 9s or 10s. It’s not only the identity politics that are everywhere (for example i’ve only found 1 human white male guy, and it’s the evil greedy major, the rest are merry multirracial elves), but in terms of gameplay: 1. There’s only ONE single path in every level, no open levels, nothing. It plays like an action adventure game or like Gears of War original games or fps campaigns, i couldn’t believe you have 0 options to explore or do anything else than follow the only existing path. You even get teleported to the next zone when you finish a mission, no world travelling to reach your next objective like every other RPG. 2. Puzzles are stupid, either use crystals to activate or move laser rays, that’s it. 3. You can’t even talk to NPCs!!! They’re not even npcs, they’re decoration. I reached a elven camp and you can’t talk to anyone other than the shop keeper. Even Mario and Luigi games 15 years go had more talkative mushrooms than this. 4. You can’t start conversations with your companions, they talk from time to time but afaik, there’s no way to start a conversation with them. 5. Conversation options don’t do anything, you don’t see your character or events changing with your decisions. 6. The character design is a disaster. This is a strange mix of ultra realistic World of Warcraft / Disney characters, they have exaggerated face features like Bellara ridiculously long ears that are much closer to WoW than Dragon Age lore. 7. Very limited combat, you issue ability orders to your companions and that’s it, no strategy or anything. The rest is the usual attack / abilities / parry / roll mixup that’s been done to death and much better in souls games and the like. 8. Graphics are too shiny, this is supposed to be dark fantasy, but i’m only finding bright beautiful forests everywhere. I could go on but i leave it there. Maybe things wil change later on, but as it is i wouldn’t even call this an RPG, there’s no character development, no exploration, no interactions, no hard decisions, it’s a bare bones action adventure game and that’s it. 6. Block’s Bitkey rolls out fix for bitcoin inheritance problem Block’s Bitkey rolls out fix for bitcoin inheritance problem Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter Inc., speaks during the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, Florida, U.S., on Friday, June 4, 2021. Eva Marie Uzcategui | Bloomberg | Getty Images For over a decade, bitcoin has been lauded as a revolutionary financial asset — decentralized, self-sovereign and resistant to confiscation — all contributing to an astronomical increase in value. But one problem has remained largely unsolved: What happens to your bitcoin when you die? While traditional financial institutions allow for the seamless transfer of stocks, mutual funds and retirement plans, bitcoin’s self-custodial nature makes inheritance and estate planning inherently thorny. Coinbase requires probate court documents and specific will designations before releasing funds, while physical wallets offer little to no support, potentially leaving all that digital value stuck on a private key. Jack Dorsey’s Block says it’s created a fix, and the company is now bringing it to market. In November, Block’s Bitkey self-custody bitcoin wallet introduced an inheritance feature that lets users set a beneficiary for their bitcoin holdings, creating a simple system for transferring the digital currency in the case of death. The feature is being rolled out on Wednesday. “A lot of people have significant amounts of bitcoin at this point, or appreciating bitcoin, that’s sitting in a place where it’s not going to get to their loved one,” said Jason Karsh, who joined the company in July and is now Bitkey’s head of business. “It’s just kind of a multibillion-dollar problem waiting to happen that we’re hoping to solve by making it super easy to recover in the case of your death.” Karsh said that with other bitcoin storage products, beneficiaries typically have to provide extensive legal documentation. And hardware wallets often require a user to store seed phrases in a way that exposes their bitcoin to unnecessary risks. Bitkey is one of the remaining pieces of Dorsey’s crypto strategy at the company he originally started as Square. The same month that Block announced the inheritance product, the company said it was winding down its unit called TBD, which was created in 2021 to focus on bitcoin. TBD was designed to be Block’s platform for developers in an effort to create a more decentralized, secure and private internet. In shuttering TBD, the company said it would still be investing in Bitkey as well as a bitcoin mining initiative, while continuing to allow users to buy bitcoin through the Cash App. Unlike traditional crypto exchanges that profit from holding user funds, Bitkey makes money through hardware sales and, potentially, transaction fees. The Bitkey device is a self-custody bitcoin wallet that users purchase to store their private keys securely. For the inheritance offering with Bitkey, the company lets the user create a separate key for the beneficiary that’s uploaded to Block’s servers. The beneficiary has no access to the key until six months after the owner dies. The funds will then be securely transferred to the beneficiary’s own Bitkey wallet. Beyond Bitkey, Dorsey said in the company’s latest earnings report that Block expects to deliver its first bitcoin mining chips this year, and is “building the infrastructure to scale faster, investing in next generation chip design and mining systems.” Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO Source link #Blocks #Bitkey #rolls #fix #bitcoin #inheritance #problem Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. Rare Protest at U.S. Embassy in Ukraine Reflects Fears Over Trump Rare Protest at U.S. Embassy in Ukraine Reflects Fears Over Trump Maryna Tymchenko walked to the U.S. embassy on Wednesday morning and held up a homemade cardboard sign over her head: “Reagan would have hated it,” the sign read, alluding to the former president who famously called the Soviet Union “an evil empire.” She said she felt whiplash from the past two weeks as the United States, once Ukraine’s top ally, and the Republican Party, the party of Ronald Reagan, appeared to back Russia in its war against Ukraine. But Ms. Tymchenko, who skipped lunch for the small protest, was nuanced in her views: She was angry with President Trump, who appeared to blame Ukraine’s leaders for Russia’s invasion of her country. But she was grateful for America’s past support of Ukraine’s war effort. She was also confused: Why had the United States aligned with Russia? Why had initial talks to end the war taken place between the United States and Russia while leaving out Ukraine? Why was the Trump administration pushing Ukraine to sign a deal — which appeared to be in its final stages on Wednesday — that would grant the United States at least some future profits from the mining of critical minerals in Ukraine? “It feels like a knife in the back from your dear friend,” said Ms. Tymchenko, 27, who works for an information technology company in Kyiv. “That’s why I’m here. It’s so weird. That’s not what the U.S. is supposed to do. You’re the leader. You’re strong. Why don’t you support us?” As anti-American protests go, this was more of a plea for help than a shout of anger. There were no chants of “Death to America,” as happens at even the most benign protests in Pakistan or Iran. The woman who organized the protest was gentle in her admonitions. “Trump is making America very small,” the organizer, Anabella Morina, said several times, while holding a banner that said “God, save America” and depicted the Statue of Liberty, Mr. Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in a strange embrace. There were more police officers and journalists at the embassy’s front gates than the handful of protesters. The protest, announced on Facebook on Monday, was held in the middle of a workday, and most attendees were retirees or activists. Still, the demonstration was emblematic of what could become a shift in Ukrainian opinion on America, with President Volodymyr Zelensky taking a more barbed tone toward its longtime ally in the war. “Our people are used to criticizing their own president — that’s our prerogative,” Ms. Morina said. “Trump has no right to interfere. I apologize in advance for criticizing your president, but he is interfering in our affairs. This is my opinion, but I also know many who share my view — his current policies are aimed at Ukraine’s defeat.” A poll by a Ukrainian company called Rating Group that was conducted after Mr. Trump called Mr. Zelensky a dictator found that Mr. Zelensky’s approval rating had gone up, to 65 percent from 57 percent in January. “I was against Zelensky myself, I never voted for him,” said Alla Iskra, 61, a former economist and casino manager who came to the protest on Wednesday. But, she added, “When Trump went against Zelensky, we all united.” Under President Biden, the United States was Ukraine’s biggest supporter, leading an international coalition against Russia and its invasion. But now, Ukrainian online memes feature photos of Mr. Trump alone, juxtaposed with photos of Mr. Zelensky surrounded by Western leaders, as he was in Kyiv on Monday, the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. A frequently shared meme features a cartoon rendition of a well-known photograph from the Kyiv suburb of Bucha in the early days of the invasion: a broken bicycle and a young man’s body. Only this rendition included Mr. Trump looking down at the body and saying. “You started it!” Ukrainians typically love a good protest. In fact, past ones have led to revolutions: the Revolution on Granite in 1990, the Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity in 2013 and 2014. Throughout the war, demonstrators have gathered on a weekly basis to protest the plight of Ukrainian prisoners of war. But protests at the U.S. embassy in Kyiv have, until now, been rare. Several Ukrainians at Wednesday’s protest assailed Kyiv’s deal this week in which it agreed to turn over the revenue from some of its mineral resources to the United States. Pavlo Derhachov, 35, called it “a new form of colonialism, hybrid colonialism.” And signs at the protest proclaimed “no blackmail” and “no to looting Ukraine.” Ms. Iskra, the former economist who was among the protesters, said she feared Mr. Trump’s insistence on gaining access to Ukraine’s critical minerals. “When Trump started talking about mineral resources, I thought he meant something good, something about helping and protecting Ukraine,” she said. “But then I realized this is just business — he is making money off Ukraine.” Oleksandra Mykolyshyn contributed reporting from Kyiv. 8. Bloober Team is working with Konami on unannounced game Bloober Team is working with Konami on unannounced game Today, Bloober Team — the Polish developers responsible for the Silent Hill 2 remake — announced it is continuing to work with Konami on another project, although the team gave no hints as to what that project might be. Piotr Babieno, CEO of Bloober Team, wrote “Our collaboration with KONAMI has been incredibly fruitful, and the success of SILENT HILL 2 speaks for itself. By sharing knowledge and experience, we have been able to create high-quality production together. Of course, we can’t reveal too many details at this time, but we are confident that fans will be just as excited about our collaboration as we are. We can’t wait to share something truly special with players when the time is right.” Neither Konami nor Blooper Team provided any indication about what this new game is, but it’s almost certainly part of the Silent Hill franchise in some way. Bloober Team is best known as a horror developer, having worked on Blair Witch, The Medium, Observer, and multiple other projects. Konami Considering Silent Hill is one of Konami’s best-known franchises, it’s unlikely Bloober Team would partner with the company for anything else. Fans have clamored for a remaster of the original game for a long time, but given Bloober Team’s track record, it would be interesting to see what it could do with a brand-new entry in the series. Please enable Javascript to view this content There’s a lot we don’t know, but here’s what we do know. Konami will both publish and hold the rights to the game, whatever it ends up being, and it will be based on Konami’s IP. It’s unlikely to be a brand-new IP, either — although we could get behind a horror-themed Dance Dance Revolution. 9. Traders are pouring into gold ETFs at record pace as trade and inflation worries grow Traders are pouring into gold ETFs at record pace as trade and inflation worries grow There’s a rush for gold happening on Wall Street, with investors flocking into the precious metal at a pace never before seen. Gold exchange-traded funds saw record high inflows last week — worth about $4.5 billion and led by the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) — with around half of that inflow occurring during Friday’s stock market sell-off , according to recent JPMorgan data. Those moves come as gold prices trade at all-time highs in early 2025, boosted by trade uncertainty and inflation concerns. The Trump administration placed tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico earlier this month, then quickly placed a 30-day moratorium on them. The White House also placed levies on ******** goods. Last week, the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment report showed inflation expectations for the coming year increased sharply. “Gold basically thrives on uncertainty and we have had an awful lot of that,” said George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors and the founder of GLD, the first ETF to track the precious metal. “I think that most of the action over the past week or so, which was pretty spectacular, was prompted by increasing concerns over the outlook for the U.S. economy.” Gold futures are up more than 10% for the year and hit a record, far outpacing the S & P 500’s 2% advance in that time. On Wednesday, they traded around $2,920 per ounce. GLD is also up around 10% in 2025. @GC.1 GLD,.SPX YTD mountain Gold, GLD and SPX year to date Milling-Stanley said the influx into gold has occurred as appetite for risk grew dramatically during 2024 and pushed investors to hedge against those positions — particularly during a year that saw the rise of flashy artificial intelligence plays and volatile assets such as bitcoin. Hedge funds and individual investors have demonstrated increased interest in GLD, he added, noting that “FOMO,” or fear of missing, could be the action driving individuals to rake up shares of gold. Gold’s recent highs “suggest that that risk-off may be becoming the new flavor of the month,” Milling-Stanley added. If that risk-averse sentiment continues, the strategist expects the value of the precious metal could keep increasing. The rally in gold has continued this year after the world’s gold demand hit a record high in 2024, driven by central bank purchases and investment demand, according to the World Gold Council. This gold rush has offered competitive gains to more volatile assets such as U.S. equities and bonds, Fidelity Investments director of global macro Jurrien Timmer said. “Gold has been a big winner for the past few years, keeping up and even beating equities. It’s quite a performance for an asset that often gets lamented for not providing a cash flow,” Timmer told CNBC, noting that gold has produced almost the same return as the S & P 500 since 2020, while having a lower volatility. The value of gold has also grown more than the value of bonds since 1970, he added. “Gold often doesn’t work, but when it does, it tends to be when bonds are impaired. To me, that’s the role of gold: a hedge against bonds. Looking ahead, there may be further gains ahead, though on a more limited basis. Milling-Stanley pointed out that gold hit $2,000 per ounce just one year ago — roughly five years after the asset broke above the $1,000 resistance level. “Let’s not get our hopes up too quickly for breaching the overhead resistance at $3,000,” he said. “I believe it will happen. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen.” To be sure, a move above the $3,000 mark could spark even more inflows into ETFs like GLD. 10. AppLovin shares tumble as short sellers question AXON ad software AppLovin shares tumble as short sellers question AXON ad software Sheldon Cooper | Lightrocket | Getty Images Shares of AppLovin tumbled 13% Wednesday as two short-seller reports cast doubt on the integrity of the company’s AI-powered AXON advertising software that helped drive the tech giant to become the top-performing tech stock of 2024. Short seller Fuzzy Panda alleged that the AXON model was “the nexus of a House of Cards” built on fraudulent advertising tactics. “We believe AppLovin has pulled every trick in the book,” the post stated. “We’ve been told they are stealing data from Meta in their e-commerce push. We also discovered AppLovin exploiting consumers and their data in ways which are clear violations of Google and Apple’s app store policies.” The reports from Fuzzy Panda and Culper Research come following a stellar fourth-quarter earnings beat in February that kept Wall Street feeling bullish on AppLovin. CEO Adam Foroughi announced the company would spin off its mobile gaming segments and continue expanding the AXON model to other e-commerce sectors, like health care, automotive and more. AppLovin’s advertising revenue climbed 73% in the quarter to reach almost $1 billion. “We believe AppLovin’s recent success in mobile gaming stems from the systematic exploitation of app permissions that enable advertisements themselves to force-feed silent, ********* app installations directly onto users’ phones, with just a single click – an event that is often inadvertent thanks to the Company’s notorious UX gimmicks,” wrote analysts at Culper. The Palo Alto-based company’s stock surged over 700% in 2024 and was the top performer in the sector, becoming one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI ***** coupled with a growth in online advertising. Fuzzy Panda confirmed to CNBC that the firm was still short on AppLovin. Culper Research, who shared some research with Fuzzy Panda per a letter from Culper Research founder Christian Lamarco, did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation at the time of publication. This refreshed assistant can perform many new tasks, thanks to some AI wizardry, and there are a few different ways for consumers to access the digital companion. There’s voice activation with Echo devices, of course, but the company has also built a . This portal will allow Amazon customers to interact with Alexa+ without having to boot up the app or interact with a smart speaker or smart display. This could be handy for making adjustments while at work or for those who feel comfortable drafting lengthy queries with a traditional keyboard. Consumers will also be able to continue using the app, but Amazon promises a redesign in the near future to accommodate the new features offered by Alexa+. Amazon For the uninitiated, Alexa+ is a of the long-standing chatbot. It leverages conversational AI and integration with Amazon services to assist users in a number of new ways. It has contextual awareness, so it can remember earlier parts of a conversation, and can complete relatively complex tasks. The company showed off demos of the assistant finding recipes, booking dinner reservations, searching for the correct part of a movie and a whole lot more. It looks pretty cool, but it’s also fairly expensive. Alexa+ begins rolling out over the next few weeks to select Echo Show devices and costs $20 per month. However, it’s free for Prime subscribers. Prime currently costs $15 per month in the US. Hopefully that price won’t be rising with the inclusion of Alexa+. Alexa Plus subscription pricing confirmed – and it’s good news for Prime members Alexa Plus subscription pricing confirmed – and it’s good news for Prime members Amazon has announced the pricing for its new Alexa Plus assistant It’ll cost $19.99 per month or will be free to Amazon Prime subscribers There’s no news yet on international availability or pricing Amazon has just announced its new AI-powered Alexa Plus assistant – and we now know the most important detail, its pricing. Alexa Plus will cost $19.99 per month and will initially only roll out in the US over the “next few weeks”. But the good news for Prime members is that it’ll be free if you already have the subscription. In other words, Alexa Plus is going to be another key way to lure you towards an Prime subscription, alongside Amazon Music, Prime Gaming and those incredibly reliable next-day deliveries. After its initial rollout, Amazon says the assistant will roll out “subsequently in waves in the coming months” to owners of the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21. If you don’t have one of those, Amazon says you’ll get early access to Alexa Plus if you buy one of them today. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know anything about international availability, but are at the Alexa event now and will be doing our best to find out more information. Analysis: Prime could now be a no-brainer (Image credit: Future) The early Alexa Plus rumors suggested it might cost in the region of $5-$10 a month (around £5-£10 / AU$8-AU$16). But while this official pricing is higher than expected, it’s now clear that Alexa Plus is clearly a way to push more people towards Amazon Prime. In fact, it’s currently cheaper to simply get Amazon Prime. While there are impressive free, AI-powered voice assistants – not least ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, which recently came to its free tier – none are as tightly integrated with smart speakers as Alexa Plus, and that’s where Amazon’s new assistant could carve out an audience. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. We’ll have to see how well it works in practice, but the demos showed it to be impressively versatile – offering powerful smart home integration, an ability to order products or groceries, book tickets or restaurant reservations and much more. Amazon says that Alexa Plus will work on almost every Alexa device it’s released, though the early access will start on the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21 – so those are the ones to have if you want to try it first. Karen Huger, an original cast member of “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for driving under the influence of alcohol and other driving violations, capping a twisting tale that put her sobriety and recovery at the center of the reality television show. One year of the sentence was suspended, meaning Ms. Huger will most likely serve one year in prison. She was also fined $2,900. Under the terms of her sentencing, Ms. Huger will not be allowed to drive for a year after her release and will receive five years of supervised probation with interlock — a miniature breathalyzer device that prevents the engine from starting unless the person behind the wheel is sober enough to drive. Ms. Huger was found guilty by a jury in December of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, negligent driving, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, and failure to notify the authorities of an address change. She was acquitted of reckless driving. She was arrested in March 2024 in Potomac, Md., an affluent community more than 10 miles northwest of Washington, after driving onto the center median, striking a pedestrian sign and then crashing into a grassy area on the side of the road. Body camera footage of the arrest showed Ms. Huger refusing to produce her driver’s license and repeatedly asking a police officer, “Do you know who I am?” Ms. Huger, whose speech was slurred, also said she had consumed a couple of beers and was run off the road by another driver. The reality star’s arrest and subsequent court appearances became a central story line in the most recent season of “The Real Housewives of Potomac.” Cameras followed Ms. Huger as she met with lawyers and made her first court appearance, but she did not discuss the details of the case on camera. Alcohol is regularly consumed at social events and small gatherings on the show, but Ms. Huger, who is known informally as the Grande Dame of Potomac, was not filmed drinking this season. However, she entered a treatment facility in January for “taking antidepressants and drinking,” according to a short video message that was played for her castmates. Ms. Huger had three previous alcohol-related offenses. Most recently, she was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in Maryland in 2011. Ryan Tresdale, Ms. Huger’s manager, said in a statement in January that his client had made the “important decision to enter a private recovery program,” causing her to miss the Season 9 reunion. “She was fully supported in this choice,” he said. “We stand behind Karen as she embarks on this meaningful journey and are proud of her for taking such a significant step forward in her personal growth.” Source link #Karen #Huger #Real #Housewives #Star #2Year #Sentence #D.U.I Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  16. Gamakay TK101 review: impressive connectivity options and mechanical performance, but lacking features Gamakay TK101 review: impressive connectivity options and mechanical performance, but lacking features Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. Gamakay TK101: one-minute review The Gamakay TK101 is a wireless mechanical keyboard with a compact form factor at a reasonable price. It adopts a more retro aesthetic, reminiscent of older style mechanical keyboards. The multicolored keycaps do help to add interest, and their rounded edges are inviting. They also feel as good as they look since they’re made from double-shot PBT. They have a slight yet satisfying texture, and are more premium than you might expect at this price point. In fact, the whole construction of the TK101 is admirable. The chassis is quite thick and reasonably heavy considering its small layout. There’s no included wrist rest, though, which is a shame since I had to bend my wrists uncomfortably for most of the time. While there are various shortcuts you can perform using the FN and other keys, there’s no labelling on the keys themselves for these extra functions, so you’ll have to refer to the manual. What’s more, unlike with many of the best wireless keyboards, there isn’t any customization software, which means more advanced tweaks are missing. This makes it less amenable for gaming, where such tweaks can be important. The unit I had came with tactile switches, and while I found them satisfying to use thanks to their dampening and lubrication, they are quite heavy, and not as snappy as I would’ve liked for gaming. For typing, I found the MDA profile of the keycaps too thick, as I generally prefer low-profile laptop-style keys. And despite what Gamakay claims, I didn’t find them to be quiet either. Connecting to multiple devices is easy, and the quick switching shortcuts work well. Up to three Bluetooth devices can be switched between, in addition to devices connected via the included 2.4GHz wireless dongle or a USB cable. While I wasn’t able to deplete the battery completely during my time with the TK101, after a few days of varied use it dropped to about 50%, which isn’t a very impressive performance. For the price, the TK101 punches above its weight thanks to its premium construction and hardware. However, I found the tactile switches a little too heavy, and the lack of customization hurts it. If you’re after a keyboard with an even lower price but still has great performance, the Keychron C3 Pro is a great choice, and for something more gaming-orientated, the Logitech G213 Prodigy may be a better alternative. (Image credit: Future) Gamakay TK101 review: price and availability $89 / £76 / AU$150 Available now in multiple colorways Good price, but some cheaper alternatives The Gamakay TK101 costs $89 / £76 / AU$150 and is available now in three colorways: White & Grey, ****** & Red, and Cyan & Grey. You can configure it with Saturn (linear) or Pluto (tactile) switches, although these are hot-swappable, with Gamakay selling more on their website. The TK101 is well-priced for a wireless mechanical keyboard with multiple connectivity options. The Logitech G213 Prodigy, one of the best mechanical keyboards, is even cheaper than the TK101, but it lacks wireless connectivity, and while we enjoyed using it, we weren’t hugely impressed with its build quality. It can be customized, though, which may make it better for gamers. There’s also the Keychron C3 Pro, which is the best keyboard with mechanical switches and a compact layout in our eyes. It’s even cheaper than the TK101, and we were very impressed with the feel of its mechanical switches. But, again, it lacks wireless capabilities. Value: 4 / 5 (Image credit: Future) Gamakay TK101 review: specs Swipe to scroll horizontally Layout 98% Switch Mechanical Programmable keys No Dimensions 17.5 x 5.2 x 0.8 inches (445 x 132 x 20mm) RGB or backlighting Yes (customizable) (Image credit: Future) Gamakay TK101 review: design and features Retro looks Thick chassis No software The TK101 harks back somewhat to traditional mechanical keyboards, thanks to its chunky-looking keys and basic design. It’s certainly not as brash as other gaming keyboards, although the multi-tonal colorways do add elements of interest and vibrancy. While the 98% form factor of TK101 feels compact, the spacing of the keys is still wide enough for comfortable finger placement. To achieve this, though, dedicated media keys and a volume wheel have been sacrificed. It’s reasonably thick and heavy, although not as substantial as some other mechanical keyboards. The overall construction is solid, and the mirrored back panel – which frames the USB-C port, power switch and a compartment for storing the 2.4GHz USB dongle – is a nice touch. The two-step feet are useful, offering meaningful height adjustments to meet individual preferences. These also feel well-made and didn’t create any wobble when propping up the keyboard. (Image credit: Future) The rounded double-shot PBT keycaps appear quite thick despite their MDA profile, but they’re comfortably indented and their texturing feels premium, being smooth while offering enough grip. If you don’t like them, though, you can swap them out, along with the switches, as the TK101 is hot-swappable. While various keys have alternative functions accessible via the FN key, these aren’t labelled, meaning you’ll have to acquaint yourself with the manual. Functions include media playback controls, opening Windows Explorer, adjusting the RGB lighting. These shortcuts are welcome, but it’s a shame there’s no software for the TK101 to provide further customizations, such as key rebinding and macro creation. Many other keyboards, especially those in the gaming sector, provide such tweaks via software. What isn’t limited, however, is connectivity. The TK101 can connect to devices wirelessly via the 2.4GHz USB dongle or via Bluetooth. Up to three devices can be connected simultaneously via the latter, which can be switched between by using the FN and number keys. The USB port can also be used for establishing a wired connection as well as charging, which adds to the versatility of the TK101. Design & features: 3 / 5 Gamakay TK101 review: performance Nicely damped Heavy tactile switches Could really do with a wrist rest The performance of the TK101 is somewhat mixed. The gasket mounting helps to cushion presses, while the tactile Pluto switches I had preinstalled in my unit were well lubed. However, they felt a little too heavy, offering more resistance than others, which can cause fatigue after a while. If you’re after something more snappy, then these switches probably won’t suit you. However, the MDA profile of the keycaps does at least shorten travel distance. For typing, though, I still found this profile too thick, as I generally prefer low profile keys for productivity tasks. And despite Gamakay’s claims regarding its sound-deadening design, I found the TK101 quite noisy too. Most egregious of all, though, is the lack of wrist support, since the aforementioned thickness of the chassis forces your hands to angle sharply no matter how you adjust the feet. This makes gaming equally uncomfortable when adopting the standard WASD position, and also causes your thumb to hit the edge of the space bar rather than the top. Both these issues were remedied when I used my own wrist rest. Combined with its lack of customization options, the TK101 isn’t as capable as the best gaming keyboards. (Image credit: Future) I had no problems connecting via Bluetooth or the 2.4GHz dongle, and switching between three Bluetooth devices using the keyboard shortcuts was easy and responsive. However, the manual states that switching to a 2.4GHz connection can also be done via these shortcuts, but this didn’t work for me; only toggling the rear switch did. I wasn’t able to test the battery to exhaustion, but it dipped to about 50% after several days of varied use, connecting to multiple devices via Bluetooth and the 2.4GHz dongle. This isn’t exactly a stellar performance, and many wireless keyboards do last longer. Performance: 3.5 / 5 Should I buy the Gamakay TK101? Swipe to scroll horizontally SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless Gen 3 Scorecard Attributes Notes Rating Value For a wireless mechanical keyboard, the TK101 is good value. It undercuts many rivals, although there are a few cheaper alternatives. 4 / 5 Design and features The TK101 is well-built and the double shot PBT keycaps feel expectedly premium. However, a wrist pad is sorely lacking given how thick the chassis is, and the lack of software limits its potential. 3 / 5 Performance The damped switches do feel satisfying, but I did find the tactile switches a little too heavy to actuate. 3.5 / 5 Overall rating The TK101 has some premium features for its price tag, but the heavy switches and lack of customization drag it down somewhat. 3.5 / 5 Buy it if… Don’t buy it if… Gamakay TK101 review: also consider Swipe to scroll horizontally Header Cell – Column 0 Gamakay TK101 Logitech G213 Prodigy Keychron C3 Pro Layout 98% Full size TKL Switch Mechanical Membrane Mechanical Programmable keys No Yes Yes Dimensions 17.5 x 5.2 x 0.8 inches (445 x 132 x 20mm) 17.8 x 8.6 x 1.3 inches (452 x 218 x 33mm) 14.4 x 5.4 x 1.2 inches (365 x 138 x 30mm) RGB or backlighting Yes (customizable) Yes (customizable) Yes (customizable) How I tested the Gamakay TK101 Tested for several days Used for gaming and productivity Plentiful keyboard experience I tested the TK101 for several days, during which time I used it for working, gaming, and general browsing. 17. Sam Burgess cleared for Las Vegas rugby league games Sam Burgess cleared for Las Vegas rugby league games Sam Burgess will coach his Super League side in Las Vegas after overcoming visa dramas that threatened his ability to participate in rugby league’s showpiece event. The NRL legend’s previous criminal charges delayed his approval to enter the US, forcing him to stay behind when his team Warrington flew out last week. In 2021, the South Sydney premiership winner pleaded guilty to three offences, including driving with an illicit substance in his system. NRL players with police records have needed approval from the US consulate to participate in the first two events of rugby league’s Stateside fixtures. Burgess had based himself in London this week to await that approval, which has now been granted. The coach’s flight is expected to arrive in Las Vegas on Wednesday night. “It’s obviously a huge bonus. There was a bit of uncertainty earlier in the week,” said assistant coach Martin Gleeson. “It’s great news for Sam and the club and the event over here.” Wednesday is a rest day for the Wolves but Burgess will assume coaching duties from Gleeson for Thursday’s opposed session with four-time NRL reigning premiers Penrith. 18. Helldivers 2 Can’t Create The Illuminate And Forget a Fan-favorite Covenant Race Helldivers 2 Can’t Create The Illuminate And Forget a Fan-favorite Covenant Race Let’s be honest; we all know that Helldivers 2 borrows a lot from the Halo universe. Sure, it’s not a one-on-one copy. However, we’ve seen developer Arrowhead taking a number of thematic and gameplay elements from the Halo games and using them to craft its own unique title. Helldivers 2 is still making waves in the gaming sphere. (Image via Arrowhead) One of the most obvious areas where we can see Helldivers 2 borrowing from Halo‘s playbook is the Illuminate faction. It’s a take on the fan-favorite Covenant alliance that’s been known to wreak havoc on humanity and Spartans. However, it’s quite mind-boggling that Arrowhead didn’t go all into this idea and bring the most terrifying Covenant race. Helldivers 2 has fumbled hard by not properly copying Halo The Covenant’s main power came from the Sangheili. (Image via Microsoft) One of the best things about the Covenant in Halo was its diversity. If you think that it didn’t play a role in the alliance’s dominance, you’re wrong. The fact that it was built up of a number of alien species, who all had unique strengths and personalities, helped Covenant put up a fight against humanity. What was the most powerful warrior class among the Covenant? Well, it’s undoubtedly the Sangheili, also known as Elites. The faction is known for its battlefield powers, thanks to their agility, strength, and tactical intelligence. Seriously, Sangheili were the UNSC’s worst nightmares. Among this faction, the most lethal force was the Sealth Sangheili. They could camouflage, which made them invisible. This allowed them to stalk their targets and strike them down. The faction is known for using the energy sword, a weapon that can wreck even the most armored Spartans in an instant. It’s been roughly two months since the introduction of the Illuminate in Helldivers 2. As we all know, the faction has an uncanny resemblance to Covenant’s elites, weapons, and tactics. It’s clear that Arrowhead was heavily influenced by Halo‘s energy sword wielders. However, the Illuminate doesn’t have its own version of Sangheili. Seriously, where are the tactical warriors who make every battle feel like a life-and-death situation? If Helldivers 2 is really pushing to learn from Halo, it should have brought the energy-sword-wielding warriors that would have struck fear into the hearts of players. The Illuminate presented Arrowhead with the perfect opportunity to bring a faction that forced gamers to rethink their combat strategies beyond just simple shooting. Helldivers 2 has a brand-new crossover on the way Helldivers 2 is preparing for another major crossover. (Image via Arrowhead) While Helldivers 2 dropped the ball with the introduction of the Illuminate, it seems like the game wants to make it up with the next updates and even plans for a special crossover. As reported by GamesRadar, when the developer Sephez was asked about the future of crossover events in Helldivers 2, it was revealed that Arrowhead is still in the early stages of planning something new. The developer hasn’t shared any other details, which leaves fans wondering which popular franchise could be coming to the game soon. Some believe that the next crossover might be with Warhammer 40k, as there was a leaked silhouette of a melee weapon that resembles Chainsword from the franchise. It won’t be the first time we see a crossover in Helldivers 2. Arrowhead has previously partnered up with Killzone 2, bringing various weapons and armor pieces inspired by Sony’s iconic FPS series. Alongside these crossover updates, Arrowhead has introduced a number of new updates in recent weeks. These patches have brought balancing adjustments, quality-of-life changes, and bug fixes. With the tease that another crossover is on the cards, Helldivers 2 gamers now have even more reasons to spread democracy. With that said, do you think The Illuminate in Helldivers 2 needs a Sangheili-like enemy type? 20. First person dies of measles in Texas outbreak that has sickened more than 120 people First person dies of measles in Texas outbreak that has sickened more than 120 people Health officials have reported the first death in the measles outbreak in West Texas. “The school-aged child who was not vaccinated was hospitalized in Lubbock last week and tested positive for measles,” the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a Wednesday release. Other details about the deceased, including their name and case severity, remain unknown. The news comes as state authorities say they have identified 124 cases in the South Plains and Panhandle regions since late January. Most of the cases are in Gaines County, with numbers growing from 45 to 80. The majority of those stricken with the virus have been between the ages of five and 17 years old — or even younger. The first death has been reported from measles in an outbreak in West Texas. More than 120 people in the state have been infected (AP) Of those cases, 18 of the patients have been hospitalized. And, only five people were vaccinated. The rest were either unvaccinated or had a vaccination status that is unknown. “Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and the surrounding communities. DSHS is working with local health departments to investigate the outbreak,” the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a Tuesday update. Earlier in the week, they issued a health alert after a person with measles traveled between San Marcos and San Antonio before they knew they were infected. “There is a very good possibility that hundreds of thousands of folks have come in contact with (the person),” Metro Health Deputy Director Dr. Anita Kurian said, according to KSAT. The University of Texas at San Antonio had been conducting an open house that day. Kurian said there was no word of anyone in the impacted areas contracting the illness so far, but that there “is a cause for concern so long as measles exists in other communities.” The majority of patients in the outbreak have been children and teenagers. More than 60 are between the ages of five and 17 years old (AP) Cases of the measles have also spread to other states. In New Mexico, nine have been reported. Measles, which can survive in the air for up to two hours, can cause serious illness and death. Infections can lead to brain swelling and blindness. And, up to nine out of 10 of those susceptible will get the virus if they have been exposed. The best way to prevent infection is two doses of a vaccine against measles. Vaccination clinics have been set up in response to the threat. This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates. New York Mayor Eric Adams seeks criminal case dismissal New York Mayor Eric Adams seeks criminal case dismissal New York Mayor Eric Adams listens to questions from reporters during a press conference at NYPD’s 40th Precinct on Feb. 20, 2025 in New York City. Michael M. Santiago | Getty Images Attorneys for New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge Wednesday for an outright dismissal of his criminal corruption case, citing alleged misconduct by prosecutors. Adams’ lawyers cited a leaked letter from the former acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon to Attorney General Pam Bondi in mid-February. The letter contained a statement about Adams’ alleged guilt, the intention to file new charges against him, and the suggestion the Department of Justice had engaged in a quid pro quo with the mayor to dismiss the case. Sassoon was one of at least seven federal prosecutors who resigned rather than follow the DOJ’s order to request a dismissal of the case without prejudice, which would allow the DOJ to refile charges if it saw fit. “To be sure, the February 12 letter, and the decision to leak it, were last acts of desperation in defense of a meritless case that never should have been pursued in the first place,” wrote Adams’ lawyers Alex Spiro and William Burck in their filing in Manhattan federal court. If Judge Dale Ho dismisses Adams’ indictment “with prejudice,” as the mayor wants, it would bar the DOJ from refiling criminal charges related to the same allegations in the future. Read more CNBC politics coverage Ho has yet to rule on the DOJ’s request that the case be dismissed without prejudice. Last week, he appointed an outside lawyer to research the standards to determine whether the case should be dismissed at all, and if so whether the case should be dismissed with or without prejudice, The filing Wednesday by Adams’ lawyers says that in her letter Sassoon disclosed her “self-proclaimed confidence in Mayor Adams’s guilt.” Sassoon also told Bondi that her office was “planning to re-indict Mayor Adams, including on a new and equally baseless obstruction charge,” the filing noted. It also included “the wildly inflammatory and false accusation that Mayor Adams and his counsel had, in essence, offered a quid to the Department of Justice in exchange for the quo of dismissal,” the filing said. The quid pro quo that Sasson was referring to was the idea that Adams had agreed to comply with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies in New York City in exchange for the case being dismissed. Adams and his lawyers have denied there was such an agreement. Adams’ lawyers wrote that the day after Sassson sent the letter, it was leaked to the media by “someone in the government … continuing the trend that has plagued this investigation and now prosecution for over a year.” “The letter contained a number of false and inflammatory statements that have irreparably prejudiced Mayor Adams,” the filing says. “The most appropriate recourse is to dismiss this case now and do so with prejudice,” defense lawyers wrote. “That is true based on this latest leak alone and independent of the fact that the government itself wants nothing to do with these meritless charges and has moved to dismiss them.” CNBC has requested comment from the DOJ on the new filing. If this intriguing release had you gripped, you’ll be excited to know that it’s now in soft launch for both iOS and Android! The setup for Jump King is as old as time itself (or video games at least). As you play the titular Jump King ascending an enormous tower with the promise of a “smoking hot *****” at the top. Not exactly Shakespeare but then Jump King isn’t exactly setting out to be a titan of interactive storytelling; instead, it’s all about the challenge, and boy is it challenging. What it does have is a hardcore difficulty curve and simple but challenging controls. Move left and right then jump, simple right? Well, the complex and often treacherous levels you’ll have to navigate will put even the most hardcore platformer player to the test! With complex layouts and leaps of faith, your patience will be tested but perseverance is always rewarded when you hit that next jump. Might as well jump While Will did have his issues with the mobile port of Jump King (notably how it chooses to monetise) there’s still plenty to love here. If you’re a big fan of hardcore platformers like Super Meat Boy, enjoy some nice crunchy pixel art and a surprisingly visually appealing fantasy world then Jump King might be for you. But if you’re looking for something a little more serious, and a little darker, but just as challenging you can also take a look at Blasphemous. This 2D hack ‘n slash eschews platforming in favour of Dark Souls-inspired Metroidvania combat, with challenging bosses and a thoroughly grim fantasy world to explore. While FEAR was already planned to be added to the preservation program, GOG decided to accelerate the process. “Monolith Productions has given players some of the most unforgettable experiences, blending groundbreaking gameplay with rich storytelling,” GOG said in a statement on Twitter. “To honor their legacy, we’re proud to announce that F.E.A.R.
