  1. Trump says 25% tariffs on EU will be announced soon Trump says 25% tariffs on EU will be announced soon Michelle Fleury & Natalie Sherman BBC News Getty Images US President Donald Trump has said he is planning to hit goods made in the European Union with tariffs of 25%, claiming the bloc was created to “****** the United States”. “We’ll be announcing it very soon,” he told reporters at an appearance with members of his cabinet. “It’ll be 25% generally speaking and that will be on cars and all other things.” The European Union said it would react “firmly and immediately against unjustified tariffs”. Trump’s appearance sparked questions about his trade plans, as he also appeared to raise the possibility that looming tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, set to come into force on 4 March, might be postponed again. An administration official later said the deadline remained in place, with the president planning to review Mexico and Canada actions related to border security over the coming days. Trump made clear on Wednesday that trade with Europe also remained in his sights, repeating his criticism of European policies, which he said put American exporters of food products and cars at a disadvantage. “The European Union was formed to ****** the United States – that’s the purpose of it and they’ve done a good job of it,” he said. “But now I’m president.” The EU rejected the president’s claims, saying the creation of a regional market had made doing business in Europe easier for American firms. “It has been a boon for the United States,” a spokesperson for the commission said. “We’re ready to partner if you play by the rules. But we will also protect our consumers and businesses at every turn. They expect no less from us.” Tariffs are a tax on imports that is collected by the government and paid for by the companies bringing in the goods. Trump has vowed to use the levies to boost US manufacturing, raise money and push other countries to change policies he opposes. Since taking office, he has raised tariffs of 10% on goods from China and taken steps to hit other imports with duties, including directing his staff to develop recommendations for custom “reciprocal” tariffs for each country. But he has also suspended some of those plans, leaving many businesses and analysts guessing as to whether he is prepared to carry out his threats. “The 25% threat that he threw out today is in line with the high end of the range that he previously indicated,” said Tobin Marcus, head of US policy and politics at Wolfe Research. “It’s a number that’s concerning – certainly should be concerning – for the trans-Atlantic trade relationship, but not totally out of the blue.” Earlier this month, he ordered 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, America’s top two trading partners. But he suspended the duties before they went into effect until 4 March, to allow for talks on border security. On Monday, Trump said he expected tariffs of 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada to come into effect “on schedule”. At Wednesday’s meeting, when asked for an update, he said the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada would go into effect on 2 April. That is the same day that the Commerce Department is supposed to deliver its wider recommendations for “reciprocal” tariffs. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters that “the overall is April 2” , distinguishing between tariffs tied to concerns about drug trafficking and migration from Mexico and Canada. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all headed lower in mid-day trade, while the peso and ********* dollar gained. 2. Jonathan Agnew on Jos Buttler’s future as England captain Jonathan Agnew on Jos Buttler’s future as England captain Pace is great but it has to be accurate pace like Azmatullah Omarzai showed. He is not express and largely does not have all of the tricks but he runs in hard, is accurate and bowls to his field – something England have struggled to do. While they largely picked their best players in this tournament, Buttler and coach Brendon McCullum put all of their eggs into the pace basket – picking Archer and Mark Wood in both games and swapping Jamie Overton for Brydon Carse in the second – and it has never looked right as an attack. Add in that England have always been juggling their resources having picked only four frontline bowlers, making up the numbers with Joe Root and Liam Livingstone, and it is clear mistakes have been made. You need five proper bowlers in an ODI so the management has to take some of the blame for that but again we come back to the fact English cricket does not take 50-over cricket seriously. All of these issues – the failure to lay a platform when batting and an inability to be consistent with the ball – are because the players are not used to playing the format. The next generation are not playing it because the domestic competition [The One-Day Cup] has been downgraded and when the summer comes you can bet many key players will not feature against West Indies in May and June and South Africa in September because they will be wrapped up in cotton wool for the Ashes. Unless that changes I don’t think we can be surprised by these results. As for Brook, he has had a poor start to 2025 with an average of 16.90 across 10 matches in 50 and 20-over cricket – but we know he can play. There are not many options to replace Buttler but Brook seems the most credible. He has done it before, in the five-match series against Australia last September, which will have at least got him thinking about captaincy while on the field. We do not know how good a skipper he may be but those close to the camp speak highly of his cricket brain. That said, this England group is always bigging each other up so it is hard to know. Ultimately, it can only be shown by results and performances but, if Brook does take over, he will have a nice run up to 2027. Buttler still has years ahead as a player. He can still make his mark too. Source link #Jonathan #Agnew #Jos #Buttlers #future #England #captain Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Cop admits to lying in Jack de Belin sex assault case Cop admits to lying in Jack de Belin sex assault case A former NSW Police officer has admitted to lying under oath during Jack de Belin’s ******* assault proceedings after he viewed the NRL star’s messages with his lawyer before claiming he believed they were “Dragons business”. The ex-cop will face sentencing proceedings later this year after his lawyer on Wednesday appeared in the Wollongong Local Court and entered on his behalf a guilty plea to one count of giving false evidence under oath amounting to perjury The man can only be known as “Officer A” due to an order made by the court on Wednesday protecting his identity. Officer A admitted to lying under oath when he appeared before the Wollongong District Court in February 2020 when he gave evidence about material he had viewed on Mr de Belin’s phone which was obtained during a search warrant. Camera IconJack de Belin. NewsWire/Joel Carrett Credit: News Corp AustraliaCamera IconCallan Sinclair. NewsWire/Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia In 2021, the DPP dropped ******* assault charges against Mr de Belin and his co-accused Callan Sinclair after juries in two District Court trials failed to reach a verdict. Both men had pleaded not guilty to all charges and consistently maintained they were innocent. They were found not guilty of one count of ******* assault following their second trial. In 2021, an internal police probe began examining the police officer’s conduct during the court proceedings and he was charged with giving false evidence under oath amounting to perjury. According to court documents, the man was charged relating to his evidence in the District Court during a pre-trial hearing when Mr de Belin and Mr Sinclair’s lawyers were applying for a stay of proceedings. If successful, it would have prevented the matter ever going to trial, however the application was ultimately dismissed by Judge Andrew Haesler. Camera IconProsecutors dropped the charges against Jack de Belin. NewsWire/Christian Gilles. Credit: News Corp Australia According to a statement of agreed facts tendered to the court, in December 2019, police raided the home of the St George Illawarra forward, seizing a yellow Nokia phone. Officer A then viewed SMS messages between Mr de Belin and a contact listed as “Craig Lawyer”. “Craig Lawyer” was Craig Osborne, a Dragons director who was also Mr de Belin’s lawyer. In the messages, Mr Osborne gave Mr de Belin an update on his legal team’s preparations for the then upcoming trial, including the issuing of subpoenas, the taking of witness statements and experts who might be called to give evidence. Police used the Cellebrite program to take screenshots of information on Mr de Belin’s phone, including 203 messages with “Craig Lawyer”, much of which was protected by legal professional privilege. After discovering that police had accessed the material, lawyers for Mr de Belin and Mr Sinclair applied for a permanent stay of proceedings, arguing it robbed them of their right to a fair trial. The application was ultimately dismissed by Judge Haesler, but during a hearing, Officer A told the court under oath that he believed Mr de Belin’s communications with “Craig Lawyer” were “Dragons business”. This is despite admitting knowing that Mr Osborne was employed by RMB Lawyers, who were representing Mr de Belin. Officer A was medically retired from the force in August 2023. He will now appear in the Wollongong District Court on March 25 to set a date for sentence proceedings. 4. City Council passes Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $830 million infrastructure bond plan after pushback City Council passes Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $830 million infrastructure bond plan after pushback The Chicago City Council narrowly passed a hotly contested $830 million infrastructure bond plan Wednesday backed by Mayor Brandon Johnson. Aldermen approved the plan in a 26 to 23 vote a day after Johnson’s administration proposed a version with clearer spending guardrails. While opponents decried the debt package as financially irresponsible, allies of the mayor defended it as a typical and crucial way to fund basic infrastructure work. “We are not mortgaging the future of our children. We are building the roads that they are going to use,” Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd, said. The already tense dispute over the bond ***** got off to a rocky start Wednesday when Johnson initially moved ahead on a vote before aldermen had the chance to speak. The mayor reversed course moments later amid uproar from opponents. Johnson said the vote proceeded error and halted it to allow debate “as a courtesy.” The heated debate on display Wednesday had gained momentum over the last two weeks in a series of dueling op-eds and online jabs. In the Tribune, Ald. Bill Conway, 34th, called the plan a way of “kicking the can into a brick wall,” while Dowell, chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee, defended it as responsible and accused opponents of “political grandstanding.” Critics had alleged bond revenues could be used to balance the Chicago Public Schools budget, an idea Johnson repeatedly rejected. The plan he proposed Wednesday included revised language clarifying that the money will not be used for purposes other than infrastructure repairs and upgrades. But Johnson’s opponents still took issue with the bond plan’s size and “back-loaded” repayment timeline Wednesday, echoing credit-impact concerns shared with the Tribune by municipal bond experts. “If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you do is stop digging,” Conway said. “We can fund important projects and invest in Chicago, but we don’t have to mortgage our children’s future and saddle them with reckless debt to do it.” As part of the plan, the city will not make interest payments until 2027 and will not pay principal until 2045. That principal cost would then grow from $27 million to about $129 million by the debt’s 2055 due date. The total repayment cost for the bond is an estimated $2 billion. The plan was set for a vote last week when Ald. Anthony Beale, 9th, used a legislative maneuver to force a delay. Johnson’s team quickly scheduled another meeting to finally get it passed. But it still faced strong headwinds Wednesday: Johnson had to cast a rare tie-breaking vote after aldermen split 25-to-25 on a motion to push the final vote to May. Ald. Andre Vasquez, 40th, voted in support of the delay, but later joined the majority to pass the bond package. While many mayoral allies cast the debt plan as a standard city financing practice, it sparked fierce debate in part because of a broader lack of trust in Johnson, Vasquez said. “The trust and the confidence isn’t here even to do standard operating procedure or easier lifts,” Vasquez said. “The trust isn’t there. I think the public knows it, the City Council knows it. The mayor needs to know it.” Conway shared his own plan with aldermen Tuesday for a smaller total bond around $500 million, while Ald. Timmy Knudsen, 43rd, proposed a substitute ordinance this week to expedite the repayment timeline and cut interest payments. Still, Johnson stuck with his plan for the bond’s size and schedule Wednesday, even as half the council supported delaying the vote. “The way that we’ve done debt service in the city for a long time has gotten us to where we are now,” Ald. Nicole Lee, 11th, said. “I think it warrants additional conversation.” Johnson’s allies said it would be far more financially irresponsible to not take on debt to improve the city’s infrastructure. The bond is a “quality of life issue” and could likely be refinanced on better terms someday, Vice Mayor Ald. Walter Burnett argued. “Deferred maintenance would cost more,” Burnett said. “Potholes will grow *******, vacant buildings will catch on fire, light poles will fall and bridges could deteriorate beyond repair.” According to city finance officials, about $108 million of the bond revenues would go to “menu” projects decided by each alderman and supplemental work from the city’s Department of Transportation; another $99 million would replace or repair bridges; $157.5 million would go toward new streetscapes and safety improvements at up to 150 intersections where crashes are most common; $74 million would update city buildings, including firehouses and fire-damaged buildings; and $65 million would replace city cars, install new speed cameras and provide new gear to firefighters. Another $100 million would help replace lead service lines and $102 million would resurface residential and arterial streets and create 50 “green” alleys to help alleviate flooding. 5. Bosnian-Serb leader sentenced to jail in landmark trial Bosnian-Serb leader sentenced to jail in landmark trial A one-year prison sentence and a six-year ban on holding public office might seem like a heavy penalty for a politician. But the Bosnian-Serb leader Milorad Dodik made light of the verdict at the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The president of the country’s majority-Serb Republika Srpska region told supporters at a rally in the regional capital Banja Luka there was “no reason to worry”. His conviction on charges of ignoring the rulings of the international High Representative was “nonsense”, he said. Dodik said he had “learned to deal with more difficult things” and called on the crowd in Republika Srpska’s de facto capital to “be cheerful”. The verdict was the culmination of a long-running conflict between Dodik and the international High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt. Schmidt is still the supreme authority in Bosnia, 30 years on from the Dayton Agreement which ended the Bosnian War of the 1990s. The high representative has the power to impose or annul laws – and sack officials ranging from judges to political leaders. One former holder of the post, Paddy Ashdown, the former leader of the ***’s Liberal Democrats, sacked almost 60 Bosnian-Serb officials in a single day in 2004, in a crackdown on their protection of war criminals. But the high representative’s powers have been used much more sparingly in subsequent years, as Bosnia’s international supporters stepped back in the hope that local leaders would work together to create a viable and prosperous country. The strategy has not been a success. Ethno-nationalist leaders remain entrenched in a country which is divided into two “entities” – the majority-Serb Republika Srpska and the Federation, where the population are mostly Bosniaks and Croats. The central government is weak – and there is little incentive for parties to cooperate. Instead, their guiding philosophy is simple and self-interested: divide, rule and profit. As a result, the country is struggling with low wages, a sluggish economy and a constant flow of emigration by talented people seeking a better future elsewhere. “Bosnians of all ethnicities are united by their disdain for their own leaders,” says Toby Vogel, co-founder of the Democratisation Policy Council think tank. “They would love not to vote for these guys, but it’s structurally almost impossible for cross-community politicians and parties to emerge.” Instead, leaders like Dodik get elected, time after time. The leader of the SNSD party has previously served as the Serb representative of the three-person national presidency and first became prime minister of Republika Srpska in 1998. A constant theme of his leadership has been the threat to trigger the secession of the majority-Serb region. Dodik and his government have consistently worked to undermine Bosnia’s national institutions, introducing a series of laws to withdraw Republika Srpska from the armed forces, judiciary and tax system. Such efforts eventually pushed the high representative to take action and annul the secessionist legislation. Christian Schmidt warned that a renewal of conflict was possible, but insisted that he would “not sit still while others seek to dismantle [decades] of peace, stability and progress”. Dodik apparently viewed that as a challenge. He approved a law declaring that Republika Srpska would no longer recognise Schmidt’s rulings. The high representative had already annulled the legislation – and made it a criminal offence to contradict his decisions. That led to the prosecution of the Bosnian-Serb leader – with prosecutors calling for a maximum five-year prison sentence and 10-year ban from holding elected office. Dodik warned he would take “radical measures” if found guilty. His conviction has not brought any fireworks so far. At this point, Dodik is insisting that he will not appeal. Instead, Republika Srpska’s government is once again proposing legislation to withdraw from national institutions – including the court which passed the guilty verdict. But Dodik is facing problems beyond Bosnia’s borders. The US and *** have imposed sanctions on him and his family for corruption – threatening the unity of Bosnia and Herzegovina – and connections with Russia. Toby Vogel believes that is more likely to threaten the Bosnian-Serb leader than the court conviction. “The conflict with the high representative will intensify,” he says. “But Dodik might well be running out of road.” “He is running out of cash to pay his bloated administration… and he can no longer raise money on international markets. So, he is in very deep trouble indeed.” None of this will be much comfort to the long-suffering people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are still enduring the interminable wait for the prosperity promised by ethno-nationalists like Dodik. This latest court battle shows how distant that prospect remains. Jackie Shroyer, the wife of 44-year-old missionary and former pastor Beau Shroyer, has now been charged as a “co-author” in her husband’s death, the family’s church confirmed to NBC News. “It saddens me immensely to have to share with you that we were notified that Jackie has been formally charged as a co-author in the ******* of her husband,” lead pastor Troy M. Easton said in a statement on the Lakes Area Vineyard Church website. Jackie was first arrested in connection with the death in November and is accused of forming a *******-for-hire plot. Story continues below advertisement A spokesperson told the agency that there were “strong suspicions of a romantic relationship between the person who ordered the crime and her accomplice, the guard at the couple’s residence.” “I’m so sorry and simply do not have words to express my disbelief and sorrow about this news,” Easton said in a previous statement, written to his congregation in November, when Jackie was first arrested. He wrote Monday that a court date has not yet been set but is expected to take place within the next six months. According to previous reporting, the Shroyer family moved to Angola in 2021 after becoming missionaries with the North Carolina-based evangelist organization, SIM USA. Besides support for Wi-Fi 6E, Apple’s custom silicon allows the MacBook Air to power two external displays at once, something sorely missing from the previous generation Air. Apple The current deal only covers the Air model with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in Apple’s “Midnight” blue finish, but that should be more than enough storage and memory for most people. If you’d still like a deal but with a few more colors to choose from, several other MacBooks are also on *****. 9. U.S. charges Tajik man living in New York with conspiring to help ISIS U.S. charges Tajik man living in New York with conspiring to help ISIS Washington — A Tajik man living in New York was arrested and charged with conspiring to provide material support to the ISIS and ISIS-K terrorist groups, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday. Federal prosecutors alleged that Mansuri Manuchekhri, a Tajik national who was illegally living in Brooklyn, facilitated the transfer of over $70,000 to ISIS-affiliated individuals in Turkey and Syria between December 2021 and June 2023, including to one person who was arrested in Turkey for attacking a church in Istanbul in 2024. ISIS-K, or ISIS-Khorasan, is one of the terrorist group’s most dangerous branches and publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. Manuchekhri was taken into custody after a close family member reported him to a New York terrorism tip line, warning of potential violence and saying that he had threatened to kill the family member, according to an affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Prosecutors alleged that Manuchekhri discussed the payments at length with someone affiliated with ISIS in Turkey, who told him that the money would go to current ISIS soldiers and family members of dead ISIS fighters. They also alleged that Manuchekhri publicly expressed his support of past ISIS attacks on the U.S. and had multiple ISIS propaganda videos on his iCloud account. Manuchekhri would often train using firearms, prosecutors said, and in two instances sent videos of himself shooting guns to an ISIS contact in Turkey. He allegedly said that he trains with guns “at least once or twice a week,” and wrote in another message, “Thank God, I am ready, brother.” He was also charged with ******** possession of firearms, including an AK-47 and a tactical rifle, and immigration fraud. An attorney for Manuchekhri did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The affidavit included photos allegedly taken from Manuchekhri’s iCloud account showing him posed with various firearms at shooting ranges: Photos included in an affidavit allegedly showing Mansuri Manuchekhri posing with firearms at shooting ranges. Justice Department Prosecutors said that Manuchekhri entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2016 and stayed in the country illegally after it expired. In March 2017, he paid an American citizen to enter into a sham marriage with him so he could obtain legal status in the United States, according to the affidavit. When immigration authorities asked for more documentation about the marriage, Manuchekhri filed for divorce and claimed he was a victim of domestic violence, hoping that would help him become a lawful permanent resident through other legal means, the government said. Both of Manuchekhri’s immigration petitions were fraudulent, prosecutors alleged, adding that they have evidence he never lived with his wife and that utility bills submitted as evidence that the pair lived together were fake. Manuchekhri appeared before a federal judge on Wednesday and was ordered to be detained as proceedings play out, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York told CBS News. The arrest follows a spate of terrorism warnings from the U.S. government, with national security officials pointing to a system that’s blinking red in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attacks by ****** on Israel and the emergence of terrorism hot spots in Central Asia. An ongoing FBI investigation into the New Year’s Day truck attack on New Orleans’ Bourbon Street found the attacker posted videos declaring his support for ISIS shortly before the deadly rampage. The attacker killed 14 people and injured dozens more when he rammed a pickup truck down the popular tourist spot. Following the attack, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and National Counterterrorism Center circulated a law enforcement bulletin warning of the threat of violence from lone offenders: “Official ISIS messaging in the group’s flagship products from 2014 and 2016 called for attackers so use vehicles as weapons in addition to edged weapons and firearms, and pro-ISIS media outlets and the group’s online supporters regularly recirculate or re-purpose those produces in a variety of forums.” Last October, the FBI arrested Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi for allegedly planning an Election Day terrorist attack in Oklahoma City. Federal prosecutors said the Afghan national took steps to carry out an attack in the U.S., including by trying to sell his family home, relocate family abroad and stockpile firearms and ammunition. Last June, federal agents apprehended eight men from Tajikistan on immigration charges amid concern the men — who entered via the Southwest border and lived in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia — were in the early stages of plotting a possible terrorist attack on U.S. soil, according to multiple U.S. officials. In February 2023, Naser Almadaoji, an Iraqi-born U.S. citizen, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to providing material support to foreign terrorist organizations, namely ISIS and ISIS-K. Pavlo Gonchar | SOPA Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images Instacart‘s stock had its worst day on record, slumping 12% after the grocery delivery company posted a fourth-quarter revenue miss and offered light guidance for the current *******. Prior to Wednesday’s move, the stock’s biggest one-day slump came in November, when it dropped 11%. Instacart reported fourth-quarter revenue of $883 million, falling short of the $891 million average analyst estimate, according to LSEG. The company said it anticipates adjusted earnings of between $220 million and $230 million for the first quarter, below a consensus forecast of $237.1 million. Gross transaction value, which measures the value of products sold, will come in between $9 billion and $9.15 billion in the quarter, compared to a FactSet estimate of $9 billion. Instacart said it expects average order growth to decline due to restaurant orders and its $0 delivery fee on minimum $10 baskets. When Instacart held its Nasdaq debut in September 2023, it became the first notable venture-backed company to go public in the U.S. in about two years, as the market adjusted to soaring inflation and rising interest rates. The company, whose official corporate name is Maplebear, closed its first day on the market with a roughly $11 billion market cap, down from its $39 billion private market valuation in 2021 during the Covid pandemic. 12. There’s Nothing More Refreshing Than Lassi There’s Nothing More Refreshing Than Lassi Ramadan’s most refreshing drink is sweet, salty and so simple. Christopher Testani for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. Published Feb. 26, 2025Updated Feb. 26, 2025 Imagine gathering around the dining table, stomach empty and throat dry, eyes fixed on the clock as it inches toward the relief of iftar, the fast-breaking evening meal. For Muslims, this — patience, restraint and dreams of the next bite of food — is the daily rhythm of Ramadan, the month of fasting from dawn to dusk, which begins Friday evening. Hydration is especially essential when fasting. But next to the savory, flavorful samosas, kebabs and other salty, rich options at iftar, water feels boring, even if you’re abstaining from it all day. Homemade lassi is a great alternative. The drink’s origins can be traced back to the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, and it’s been consumed for more than 1,000 years, with good reason. The simple yogurt-based refreshment, blended with sweet or savory ingredients, is versatile, easy to make, and especially ideal for slaking thirst any time of year. Here are tips for making an especially good batch: Start with great yogurt Dahi, an Indian yogurt easily found at South Asian supermarkets, is the ideal choice for both texture and flavor. It’s creamier than more readily available plain, whole yogurt and, while still tangy, it has a subtle ********** and an almost slightly savory quality. That said, plain whole-milk yogurt will work well. For thicker, creamier yogurt, leave the container in the back of the fridge for a week to separate from the whey. Then measure out the yogurt, leaving the whey behind. Don’t add water Originally, lassi was made with water and yogurt poured back and forth between ***** to aerate and blend. Therefore, many recipes will call for thinning the yogurt with water, then chilling it in the fridge. But, blending the yogurt with ice speeds the cooling process and froths the drink, all while adding body. Try all the varieties Christopher Testani for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. There’s a lassi for everyone, whether your tastes lean sweet or savory. Salted lassi is one of the most popular styles. Using Himalayan pink salt promotes hydration, but standard kosher or table salt similarly achieves the signature flavor. ****** salt, or kala namak, adds a sulfuric flavor. Other additions include cumin seeds and chaat masala. And in South India, curry leaves, fresh cilantro, green chiles and even asafetida, also known as hing, are blended in. Sweet lassi, in its simplest form, mirrors salted lassi but relies on granulated sugar rather than salt. Aromatic additions like cardamom, rose water, saffron and nuts can enhance the flavor. Fruit lassi often using similar spices as sweet lassi, but adds in fresh or frozen fruit, as in strawberry lassi, or fruit pulp, a common choice for mango lassi. To make either style, start with a base recipe and adjust, adding different spices, extracts or fruit, or a combination, as desired. Then, let the blender do the work. Since there aren’t many other ingredients at play, start with less of the flavorings than you think you might need, adding more after tasting the first blend. Drink it cold One thing is nonnegotiable, though. Lassi is best served chilled, so keep ice and frozen fruit on hand to quickly blend some up at a moment’s notice. And when serving lassi to a crowd, consider chilling the glasses and serving pitchers ahead of time — stainless steel is great choice for maintaining the chill — so everyone, fasting or not, gets a true taste of just how refreshing lassi can be. Pixel Watch 3 receives FDA clearance for loss of pulse detection Pixel Watch 3 receives FDA clearance for loss of pulse detection The FDA has granted to a potentially lifesaving feature for Google’s Pixel Watch 3. The smartwatch will start offering “loss of pulse detection” for US customers at the end of March. Once this aspect of the watch is enabled, the Pixel Watch 3 can automatically place a call to emergency services if it detects that the wearer’s pulse has stopped. That could help a user receive critical medical attention even if they are responsive in situations such as cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose or poisoning. Loss of pulse detection was announced last year and is already available to Pixel Watch 3 owners in select EU markets. We luckily didn’t have cause to put the feature through its paces in our positive of the wearable, which particularly impressed on battery life, brightness options and workout detection. Smartwatch manufacturers have been developing a suite of tools designed to assist wearers in different kinds of potentially life-threatening situations. For instance, the Pixel Watch 3 also offers features such as a safety check that shares your location with a chosen contact, fall detection that alerts first responders and car ****** detection that notifies emergency services. Apple also introduced similar features for the iPhone and Apple Watch a few years ago. 15. Buttler to assess future as captain after England exit Buttler to assess future as captain after England exit Jos Buttler will consider his position as England white-ball captain following a third ignominious exit at a major tournament under his leadership. England have surrendered both limited-overs World Cups in the past 18 months and have now crashed out of the Champions Trophy in the group stages after a nail-biting eight-run defeat to Afghanistan. Buttler accepted the stakes were high ahead of Wednesday’s contest in Lahore, and after a 22nd loss in 34 ODIs since succeeding Eoin Morgan in June 2022, he acknowledges he has some soul-searching to do. “Obviously the results aren’t where they need to be,” he said. “I’ve got to work out personally, am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?” Buttler, who skippered England to 2022 T20 World Cup glory, insisted he will make no rash decisions on his future and will consult with head coach Brendon McCullum and director of men’s cricket Rob Key. McCullum expanding his role to absorb the ODI and T20 sides into his remit was welcomed as a shot in the arm for Buttler, but under the duo England have won only once in 10 matches. Jofra Archer took three wickets in the powerplay on Wednesday, but Ibrahim Zadran set a new Afghanistan record for the highest individual ODI score, thumping 12 fours and six sixes in his 177 off 146 ******. It was the highest score in the tournament’s history, ensuring Ben Duckett’s 165 in England’s campaign-opening defeat by Australia lasted just four days, and powered Afghanistan from 3-37 to 7-325. Afghanistan clobbering 113 in the final 10 overs – with Buttler having to juggle his bowlers because of a left knee injury to Mark Wood – proved instrumental, despite Joe Root blasting a magnificent 120 off 111 ******. “It’s a deep disappointment to be knocked out, we’re obviously gutted,” Buttler said after a sixth successive ODI defeat. “The more firing and confident team would have got over the line here. “I know lots of people think it doesn’t sit well with me being captain, but I really do enjoy it. Even before when I wasn’t captain, I liked to think of myself as a leader in the team. “But results are tough and they weigh heavy at times.” Buttler was out for 38 in the chase and has made just two fifties in his past 20 ODIs. “At my best, I’m one of the best players in the world and that’s what the team needs from me,” he said. “Unfortunately I haven’t been delivering that.” As Afghanistan proved their 2023 World Cup win over England in Delhi was no fluke, Buttler’s side must now head to Karachi for a Group B dead rubber against South Africa on Saturday. 18. Riot is reversing its unpopular League of Legends changes Riot is reversing its unpopular League of Legends changes Riot Games is hitting “undo” on its recent massively unpopular changes to League of Legends that essentially made everything in the game harder for players to unlock without spending money. After the company saw negative comments spammed across social media, widespread talk of a player boycott and over 32,000 signatures gathered on a petition to fire CEO Dylan Jadeja, the company acknowledged that the recent updates “didn’t hit the mark for everyone.” As a result, Riot is (among other changes) bringing back Hextech Chests and cutting in half the Blue Essence cost of all champions to win back disgruntled players. For a master class in the corporate art of selling opposing messages with equal gusto, watch Riot Games’ last two League Of Legends dev update videos back-to-back. Less than three weeks ago, studio head Andrei van Roon and executive producer Paul Bellezza put on their best Ward Cleaver faces to matter-of-factly explain why unpopular changes to the game were necessary for Riot’s long-term financial sustainability: To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Fast-forward to Wednesday’s video, and the same pair can be seen hustling to backpedal as hard as possible, acknowledging that “some of you are frustrated, even questioning if Riot is still the company you’ve always known” while promising they “get it.” (I almost expected a crisis hotline number to flash across the screen.) “When our decisions don’t land the way we intended, it can damage your trust,” Bellezza somberly admits: To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Setting aside the amusing nature of corporate attempts to personalize business decisions, today’s changes should help inspire more confidence from the fanbase. Hextech Chests aren’t just returning — you’ll find more of them. Starting with next week’s patch (25.05), you’ll be able to earn up to 10 Chests and Keys per Act. Eight will be spread throughout the free Pass (in place of the Seasonal skin and Mystery Epic or Lower Skin); another two will be learnable through Honor (the game’s system to encourage good sportsmanship). Riot stressed that these will be identical to the Chests previously earned through Champ Mastery. Other changes include a 50 percent reduction in Blue Essence cost for all champions. In addition, Riot is delaying the widely panned Sahn Uzal Mordekaiser Exalted skin “to take more time to make sure it better delivers on its core fantasy.” It also plans to take more time improving future Exalted skins, which means “you likely won’t see one in every Act this year as originally planned.” Finally, Clash is returning to a monthly schedule, Your Shop will be back in Patch 25.06 and the Blue Essence Emporium will reappear in 25.07. The community is (understandably) pleased with itself in forcing the pivot. “Holy *****, bullying works,” u/DirtyChickenBones (an all-time handle if ever there was one) posted in the League subreddit. “NEVER STOP BULLYING CORPORATIONS,” u/HunniePopKing yelled triumphantly in the same thread. Others retained a grounded realism about the reversal. “Don’t think for one second this changes their approach,” u/eBay_Riven_GG wrote. “They will keep limit-testing what they can get away with. Keep complaining if you want improvements.” Reacting to Bellezza’s comment about the changes not resonating with players, u/350 wrote, “‘Didn’t hit the mark for everyone,’ bruh, it didn’t hit the mark for anyone except the CEO.” You can check out Riot’s dev blog post for more details on Riot’s reversal on all those changes that “didn’t hit the mark.” Source link #Riot #reversing #unpopular #League #Legends Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  19. Tories demand Mark Carney comply with conflict of interest rules – National Tories demand Mark Carney comply with conflict of interest rules – National In a series of press conferences in recent weeks, the federal Conservatives have demanded that Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney comply with the conflict of interest rules that apply to members of Parliament and cabinet ministers. Carney, who is neither an MP nor a member of cabinet, has said he will comply with the rules when they apply to him. Here is what the rules say. What are the rules for members of Parliament? MPs are subject to the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons, which came into force in 2004 and has been updated five times, most recently in March 2023. Story continues below advertisement The code includes a process to disclose private interests to the ethics commissioner and procedures to make some of that information public. It also sets out rules to help MPs avoid conflicts of interest. It only applies to sitting members of Parliament, so it’s not in force during an election. What are the rules for the government? Cabinet ministers and the prime minister are subject to the Conflict of Interest Act and must make disclosures to the ethics commissioner. Some of the information disclosed to the commissioner has to be made public. 3:49 Carney pitches ‘spend less, invest more’ approach, would look to ‘reigning in government spending’ as PM What are the rules for candidates in a party leadership race? Elected MPs are subject to the House of Commons conflict of interest code. That code applies to two candidates in the current Liberal leadership race: Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould. Story continues below advertisement Cabinet ministers and parliamentary secretaries also have to comply with the Conflict of Interest Act, but Freeland and Gould both stepped down from their cabinet roles before the leadership race began. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Frank Baylis, who was an MP from 2015 to 2019, would have made disclosures at that time. Right now, he and Carney are not subject to either set of rules. Why don’t the rules apply to Carney? Rob Shepherd, a professor of public policy and administration at Carleton University, said the rules are “meant for protecting the interests of the ********* public once they’re in office.” “No candidate is required to disclose their personal assets,” he said, adding that asking candidates to disclose assets early could run afoul of privacy laws. This is an unusual situation, since Carney could become prime minister before becoming an MP. Shepherd said that’s led to questions about whether the rules need to be changed. Story continues below advertisement “It may be a very legitimate question to ask,” he said. Shepherd said that while changes could be made to the laws that govern elections, it’s up to political parties to set the rules for their own leadership races. 3:27 ‘We must be masters in our own home’: Carney warns Canada amid looming trade war with U.S. What happens when the leadership race is over? The winner of the Liberal leadership race will be appointed prime minister by the governor-in-council and will then have to comply with the Conflict of Interest Act. Story continues below advertisement That law says public office holders have 120 days to complete an initial compliance process. They must divest controlled assets — assets like stocks or bonds that could rise or fall in value as a result of government actions. Those assets must be sold in an arm’s-length transaction or placed in a blind trust. Within 60 days of taking office, a cabinet minister, minister of state or parliamentary secretary must submit a confidential report to the ethics commissioner’s office. According to the wording on the ethics commissioner’s website, they must “make reasonable efforts to include a similar description for (their) spouse or common-law partner and dependent children.” That report is reviewed by the commissioner’s office, which provides a summary statement and advice on any public declarations required. Those must be signed and handed to the commissioner within 120 days of the initial appointment to office. What are the Conservatives saying? Conservative MPs say Carney is exploiting a “loophole” in the laws. Story continues below advertisement MP Michelle Rempel Garner said last week that because Carney could win the Liberal leadership and quickly call a federal election, “it’s conceivable that he wouldn’t have to disclose his financial interests … until after an election.” She argued the law did not anticipate “an unelected person who had significant corporate board interests becoming prime minister” and called on Carney to disclose all his corporate interests now. “I firmly think that anybody seeking to lead this country needs to live above the letter of the law,” she said. Conservative MP Michael Barrett pointed out that Carney was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “senior economic adviser” for years. 0:45 Mark Carney receives 3 more high-profile endorsements Carney became an informal adviser to the federal government on economic matters during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In late 2024, the Liberals announced he would chair a task force to help the party develop ideas on spurring economic growth. Story continues below advertisement “It’s very clear that we have a problem with the rules as they exist because Mark Carney can be sneaky about what his business dealings are,” Barrett said Tuesday. He did not answer when asked whether party leadership races should be restricted to sitting MPs. He also didn’t say which rules should be changed. Dennis Matthews, president of advertising agency Creative Currency and a Conservative strategist, said the Liberals and the Conservatives are both racing to brand Carney, who is a relative unknown on the political stage. More on Canada More videos “All of the best attacks in politics have to have a kernel of truth to them. So when you look at Conservatives going after Carney on financial disclosures, or business dealings from the past … these can be answered with a little bit of sunshine from Mark Carney,” he said. “If he’s not willing to answer, you can see that brings into (play) questions of, ‘What’s being hidden?’” But Shepherd said the attacks are a “false flag.” “What’s sneaky about this, exactly? The (Conflict of Interest Act) doesn’t capture (Carney),” he said. He said he thinks the Conservatives are “doing whatever they can to slow down a speeding train, that is, their decline in the polls.” Story continues below advertisement “You throw as much as you can out there and see what sticks,” he said. What is Carney saying about all this? When he announced his intention to run for the Liberal leadership, Carney said he resigned as UN special envoy for climate action and finance and left his executive role at Brookfield Asset Management and the boards of Stripe and PIMCO. His campaign team said in an emailed statement on Monday that he has resigned from all professional or advisory roles. “He will work hard to earn a seat in the House of Commons, where he is committed to complying with all applicable ethics rules and guidelines relating to these roles,” said campaign spokesperson Emily Williams. “It’s clear that Pierre Poilievre is afraid to face Mark Carney in the coming election campaign.” Source link #Tories #demand #Mark #Carney #comply #conflict #interest #rules #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Xbox Boss Teases Unannounced Games And Reacts To Switch 2 Reveal Xbox Boss Teases Unannounced Games And Reacts To Switch 2 Reveal It’s no secret that Xbox has a lot of games coming in 2025, but what we’ve heard about so far doesn’t represent everything the company is working on. Xbox Game Studios boss Craig Duncan said in an interview that Microsoft has plenty of games still to be announced. Asked about what he’s playing now and looking forward to, Duncan said on the Xbox podcast that he spends a lot of time playing Microsoft’s own games, including unannounced games. “We’ve got a bunch of stuff we haven’t announced, so obviously I spend a bunch of time with that,” he said. Microsoft has more games coming to PS5 this year than Sony does (at least so far), including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Doom: The Dark Ages, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Mythology: Retold, The Outer Worlds 2, and Ninja Gaiden 4. As for when any future Xbox games could be revealed, it’s expected that Microsoft will hold a showcase of some kind this June, and that could be when we learn more about upcoming Xbox games. One Xbox title slated for 2025, Fable, was recently delayed to 2026 and could come to PS5. Other upcoming Xbox games include a new Perfect Dark and Gears of War: E-Day. There are also rumors about a Halo game coming to PS5, while Microsoft has also confirmed multiple new Halo titles are in the works. Also in the interview, Duncan reacted to the Switch 2 announcement in January. He said it was “cool to see” Nintendo finally show off the console. He added that he’s “always curious and excited” to see what Nintendo has in store for fans. Before this, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer strongly teased that the company will bring games to Switch 2, and that would make sense given Microsoft’s new multiplatform approach. Duncan was recently promoted to Xbox Game Studios boss, following his lengthy run as the studio head at Sea of Thieves developer Rare. Boris Mannsfeld, 56, was found lying face down on the floor of his yard Friday night with a bullet wound to the back of his head, local media outlet Breaking News Belize (BNB) reported. The deadly incident took place at The Villas at Cocoplum in Maya Beach, a luxury villa complex Mannsfeld helped build in the small Central American country. In 2010, he set up his own development firm in Belize, Boris Mannsfeld and Associates, four years after he moved to the country on a permanent basis with his family. Teenager Going For A Quick Swim Severely Injured In Shark Attack Police Commissioner Chester Williams told reporters that Mannsfeld’s death has all the hallmarks of a targeted hit, while adding that the exact motive remains unclear, BNB reported. A loaded 9mm pistol, Mannsfeld’s wallet and a spent shell casing were found near his body, police told the outlet. Read On The Fox News App “It has all indications of a hit,” Williams said. “We are looking at the business transactions that Mr. Mannsfeld may have with other individuals, with our view to see if we will be able to close in on a possible motive and perhaps suspect,” Williams said. The police chief added that one suspect, Frik De Meyere, is currently in custody, although charges were yet to be filed as of Monday. De Meyere is a former employee of Mannsfeld’s and was previously questioned in relation to the ******* of businessman Ricardo Borja in 2023. Borja worked for Mansfield’s company, as did Darren Taylor, who was killed in 2024. Local Belizean fishermen were out searching for tiger sharks when they stumbled on the Greenland shark. “It will not be wrong for one to assume that there may be some connection there, and we’re looking at that possibility,” William said. Before his death, Borja claimed that De Meyere was behind a land fraud scheme and had scheduled a meeting with legal counsel, a real estate agency and the government’s special crime unit to present evidence against de Meyere, local outlet Amandala reported at the time. But Borja was killed before he could speak out. BNB also reports that in a January email, Mannsfeld referenced a “massive fraud case” involving millions in stolen assets and noted his involvement in a $3.9 million lawsuit against a former associate. Williams acknowledged Mannsfeld’s ******* could be linked to the deaths of Borja and Darren Taylor. 25. Travel ban for man who abused women in Highland dungeon Travel ban for man who abused women in Highland dungeon Steven McKenzie BBC Scotland Highlands and Islands reporter Peter Jolly/Northpix Kevin Booth pictured outside his Lochdhu Lodge in 1995 A man who abused vulnerable women in an underground chamber at his Highland home has been given the first worldwide travel ban to be imposed by a Scottish court. Kevin Booth, who is in his 60s, carried out “punishment beatings” using whips, canes and riding crops at his Lochdhu Lodge in Altnabreac, a small community in Caithness. A court ruling said he had carried out “a systematic course of conduct of acts of human trafficking and exploitation” over many years. The travel ban, which was approved after Police Scotland raised a civil action, prevents Booth from travelling outside the *** for the next five years. Lochdhu Lodge was built in a remote location in the Highlands The court heard that Booth filmed his attacks, including one 18-minute video of a terrified woman who tried to escape but was unable to do so. The attack was described as being “nothing other than torture”. Robert MacDonald Booth, pictured in 2018, has been forced to surrender his passport Police raised the action at Wick Sheriff Court to secure the travel ban under human trafficking and exploitation legislation. Booth travelled regularly abroad and recruited economically vulnerable women in a number of countries, including South Africa, Dubai, Sri Lanka and Philippines, then paid for them to travel to the ***. His assaults at Lochdhu Lodge were carried out in a chamber, accessed via a trapdoor and a 60m (197ft) concrete tunnel, which contained an empty coffin, life-size ancient Egyptian figures and a metal bench. Some women were restrained by handcuffs and video showed them in extreme distress and pain, the judgement said. Booth’s violence also involved the use of belts and wooden brushes in what the sheriff described as punishment beatings. Human trafficking and exploitation Sheriff Neil Wilson said Booth had committed acts of human trafficking and exploitation over many years. He described the evidence which had been presented in court as “utterly harrowing”. “The graphic video footage, combined with the context and background provided by supporting documentary evidence in various forms, was redolent of a level of cruelty and depravity which, whilst extreme, one can only hope is rare,” he said. In addition to the travel ban, he ordered that Booth must notify police in advance of hiring any woman as a housekeeper or to any other role at his home. Booth had been charged with assaulting children in his care at a school in 1991 and left the *** in an attempt to evade justice, but later returned. In 1994 he was convicted after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court of five charges of assaulting children and a further charge of failing to surrender to bail. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. In 2002, Booth was convicted following a trial at Bradford Crown Court of indecently assaulting his Brazilian au pair and was sentenced to two years in jail. A track leading to Booth’s home in the Highlands Police search Booth’s home in the Highlands following allegations made about his conduct in March 2019. He later appeared in court in private but a procurator fiscal discontinued the proceedings in March 2021. Then in July 2023 a former employee made a complaint to Police Scotland about Booth’s conduct to her when she was employed by him at the lodge between June and December 2022. The court judgement says Booth pressured her into providing him with “******* services”. It also tells how Booth was investigated for raping a woman in Ireland and subsequently sought to apply financial pressure on the complainer to withdraw her allegation. During their investigations, police gathered evidence which was presented in the civil action. Following the release of the judgement, Det Sgt Chris Hughes, of Police Scotland, said: “The safety of women and girls is an absolute priority for us and we sought the Trafficking and Exploitation Risk Order as an option open to us to prevent any further offending. “Trafficking and exploitation is a blight on our communities and has no place in society and we will use all resources open to us to tackle it.” The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said it had a duty to keep cases under review. A spokesperson said: “Crown counsel concluded in 2021 that there should be no further criminal proceedings at that time. “The Crown reserved the right to proceed in the future.” This court judgment reveals an appalling catalogue of cruelty and abuse by Kevin Booth, carried out over many years. But it follows a civil court case – not a criminal trial. So Booth remains free. So what’s changed? This court order imposes drastic limits on Booth’s ability to traffic and exploit women in future. He must tell police any time women visit his home. He is banned from sponsoring visas for anyone travelling to this country. So he can’t bring women here from abroad. And he has been forced to surrender his passport – so he can’t travel overseas. The focus is on controlling Booth in the years ahead – not on bringing him to justice for the suffering he has already caused.
