Transgender service members to be separated from military, Pentagon memo says Transgender service members to be separated from military, Pentagon memo says The U.S. will begin removing transgender troops from the military within 30 days unless they obtain a waiver on a case-by-case basis, the Pentagon said in a Wednesday memo. The memo became public as part of a court filing in a case challenging President Trump’s late January executive order that was aimed at barring military service by transgender personnel. “Service members who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service,” the memo read. These troops may be “considered for a waiver on a case-by-case basis, provided there is a compelling government interest in retaining the service member that directly supports warfighting capabilities,” it said. To obtain such a waiver, troops must show that they have never attempted to transition, as well as demonstrate “36 consecutive months of stability in the service member’s sex without clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.” Transgender people have faced a roller coaster of changing policies on military service in recent years, with Democratic administrations seeking to permit them to serve openly, while Mr. Trump has repeatedly sought to keep them out of the ranks. The U.S. military lifted a ban on transgender troops in 2016, during then-President Barack Obama’s second term. Under that policy, trans troops already serving were permitted to do so openly, and transgender recruits were set to start being accepted by July 1, 2017. But the first Trump administration postponed that date to 2018 before deciding to reverse the policy entirely. Mr. Trump’s controversial restrictions — which underwent changes in response to various court challenges — eventually came into force in April 2019 following a protracted legal battle that went all the way to the nation’s top court. Mr. Trump’s successor, former President Joe Biden, moved to reverse the restrictions just days after he took office in 2021, saying all Americans qualified to serve should be able to do so. After returning to office in January, Trump issued an executive order that again took aim at transgender military service, saying: “Expressing a false ‘gender identity’ divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service.” Source link #Transgender #service #members #separated #military #Pentagon #memo Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Fremantle Dockers veteran Nat Fyfe rejoins main group in boost to hopes of playing round one against Geelong Fremantle Dockers veteran Nat Fyfe rejoins main group in boost to hopes of playing round one against Geelong Veteran Nat Fyfe has trained with Fremantle’s main group for the first time since pre-season knee surgery in a major boost to his hopes of playing in round one. Fyfe had surgery in January and has been on a modified program this pre-season. But he is still a chance to head to Geelong to take on the Cats in a fortnight’s time. The former skipper was with the main group for drills, but did not take part in a brief 18 v 18 match simulation. Fellow midfielder Hayden Young has been ruled out of the clash with a hamstring injury he suffered at training on Saturday. Young ran slow laps at Dockers training on Thursday as he begins to recovery. That could open up a gap for a midfielder to play, with draftee Murphy Reid, as well as fourth-year pair Matt Johnson and Neil Erasmus also vying for a place. Bezos focuses Washington Post opinion section on free markets and liberties Bezos focuses Washington Post opinion section on free markets and liberties Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos has announced that the newspaper’s opinion section will focus on supporting “personal liberties and free markets”, and pieces opposing those views will not be published. The move, which marks a major shift away from the section’s broad opinion coverage, prompted the outlet’s opinion editor David Shipley to resign. Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, sent a memo to staff on Wednesday which he also posted to X. “We are going to be writing every day in support and defence of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,“ Bezos said. He added the opinion section would cover other topics, but “viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others”. “There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views,” Bezos wrote. “Today, the internet does that job.” Bezos added that he had asked Mr Shipley if he wanted to stay at the outlet after the changes, but he said no. “This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment – I respect his decision,” Bezos said. The billionaire businessman’s move is a significant intervention in the editorial side of the newspaper, which he acquired in August 2023. It follows a decision last year not to run an endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and to stop making presidential endorsements in general, which led to resignations and the loss of thousands of subscribers. According to the Washington Post, Will Lewis, the outlet’s chief executive, said in a memo to staff that the changes to the opinion section were “not about siding with any political party”. “This is about being crystal clear about what we stand for as a newspaper,” he said. The decision was praised by several of President Donald Trump‘s allies, including billionaire Elon Musk, who wrote on social media: “Bravo, @JeffBezos!” But on a Washington Post article announcing the change, some subscribers wrote in the comment section criticising the decision, and others said they would be cancelling their subscription. Moroccan king calls for Eid animal sacrifice restraint Moroccan king calls for Eid animal sacrifice restraint The king of Morocco has called on people to refrain from sacrificing sheep during a religious festival later this year because of a drought that has decimated livestock populations and driven up the price of meat. Millions of sheep, goats and other livestock are sacrificed across the ******* world every year during Eid al-Adha, one of two key Islamic holidays and due this year in June. But Morocco is enduring a seventh consecutive year of drought, which has led to a 38 percent fall in livestock numbers in 12 months. Rainfall has been 53 percent lower than the average of the last 30 years, according to the agriculture ministry. “Our country is facing climatic and economic challenges that have resulted in a substantial decline in livestock,” King Mohammed VI said in a speech read by the minister of religious affairs on national television Wednesday. While acknowledging the importance of the Eid festival, the king called on his people “to refrain from performing the rite of sacrifice”. Eid Al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son. Mohammed VI’s father, Hassan II, made a similar call in 1966 when the country also endured a prolonged drought. The fall in livestock numbers has caused a surge in the price of meat — adding to the burden on the poor with a minimum wage of around 290 euros a month. isb-fka/liuisb-fka/liu/fox/tym Source link #Moroccan #king #calls #Eid #animal #sacrifice #restraint Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Ukraine-US draft minerals deal is ‘an absolute absurdity’

Ukraine-US draft minerals deal is ‘an absolute absurdity’ Ukraine-US draft minerals deal is ‘an absolute absurdity’ STORY: :: An analyst calls the U.S.-Ukraine draft minerals deal ‘lopsided’ and ‘absurd’ :: February 25, 2025 :: M. Steven Fish, University of California Berkeley “For the United States to try to extract a half trillion dollars in mineral resources from Ukraine after giving Ukraine about $60 billion in aid is an absolute absurdity. Not only is it obviously completely lopsided, but we need to keep in mind that Ukraine has been defending the United States and our West European allies and our European allies more generally from Russian aggression ever since Russia invaded Ukraine for the second time in 2022. Ukrainians have been doing the fighting and dying. All we’ve done is provide some aid, which is a pittance compared to what we’ve gotten from them, which is defending Europe against Russian aggression.” The U.S. president, who has cast the deal as a repayment for billions of dollars in aid to Kyiv, also said some form of peacekeeping troops are needed in Ukraine if an agreement to end the conflict is struck. Moscow, which launched an invasion of Ukraine three years ago, has refused to accept any deployment of NATO forces. Political Science Professor at University of California Berkeley, M. Steven Fish, said the deal “is an absolute absurdity” and added “Ukrainians have been doing the fighting and dying. All we’ve done is provide some aid, which is a pittance compared to what we’ve gotten from them, which is defending Europe against Russian aggression.” Trump’s rush to impose an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and his lurch toward Moscow has stoked fears of far-reaching U.S. concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin that could undermine security in Ukraine and Europe and alter the geopolitical landscape. Raiders anoint player to step into Rapana’s shoes Raiders anoint player to step into Rapana’s shoes There’ll only ever be one Jordan Rapana, but Xavier Savage has been backed as the man to fill his spot as Canberra’s ball of energy in 2025 and beyond. Rapana achieved cult hero status at the Raiders across 214 games and came to embody the character of the team under coach Ricky Stuart – physical, passionate and a little bit rogue. But the 35-year-old’s move to Super League side Hull FC has meant for the first time since 2013, the Raiders will run out this weekend without Rapana on their roster. Not that Rapana’s exit has stopped him from unleashing his trademark aggression on the English Super League. “I watched his first game and he was playing against some of his best mates, Elliott (Whitehead) and (Nick) Cotric, and he wanted to take their heads off,” former Raiders teammate Jarrod Croker told AAP. For Saturday’s season opener against the Warriors in Las Vegas, Kaeo Weekes has been listed to step into the fullback spot where Rapana played 13 of his 18 games last year. On the wings, Rapana’s other position of choice, the Raiders have named Savage and inexperienced recruit Savelio Tamale, as Albert Hopoate remains home for his child’s birth. But emulating Rapana’s win-at-all costs approach to the game will also be of pressing concern to a Raiders side relying on young spine players Weekes and Ethan Strange to step up this year. “You just can’t coach competitiveness,” Croker said. “(Rapana) goes to training, he mucks about, and then he gets on that field and he’s the ultimate competitor.” Club legend Croker continues to work with the Raiders as a goalkicking consultant and mentor to the outside backs. In Rapana’s absence he’s been impressed by 22-year-old Savage, whose flowing mullet and recent proposal in Las Vegas have him on the way to his own cult hero status. “Xavier Savage is the one who’s really stepped up with that aggression and his carries. That’s what we’ve seen from Rapa, his competitive and aggressive nature,” Croker said. “(Centres) Matty Timoko, Sebby Kris, they’ve played around Rapa a lot and I’m sure they learned a lot off him as well. “There’s only one Rapa, as well. “A lot of the boys that are here have played with Rapa and if some of that competitive nature can rub off on them, it’ll go a long way.” Croker played 150 of his 307 NRL games alongside Rapana and has remained in close contact with the New Zealander since his move to Hull. On the field, Croker says he has “thousands” of memories of Rapana’s mercurial brilliance, including his memorable combination with former Raiders centre Joey Leilua, and his role on the charge to the 2019 grand final. There’s one particular image of Rapana that will stay with Croker forever. “He used to play competition golf on game day at 8 o’clock, and then rock up to the game with his golf sticks half hanging out the car. Then he’d come out and score three tries,” Croker said. “He was just ridiculous.” Source link #Raiders #anoint #player #step #Rapanas #shoes Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Sen. Mark Kelly exposes the truth: Everyone is lying about Ukraine Sen. Mark Kelly exposes the truth: Everyone is lying about Ukraine Here’s what we know about the war in Ukraine. Everyone is lying. On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona leaned into Stephen Feinberg, President Trump’s pick to be deputy secretary of Defense, and challenged him to defend Donald Trump’s lie. “Mr. Feinberg, did Russia invade Ukraine?” Feinberg could not answer the question with a yes. That was a lie. Feinberg and everyone in that conference room knows Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago this week. Mark Kelly answered a lie with propaganda U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, questions Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense secretary, during Hegseth’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Capitol Hill on Jan. 14, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Within hours, Kelly put out a video clip on X, formerly Twitter, that was its own small distortion, an artfully edited piece of propaganda that pales in comparison to Feinberg’s lie, but nonetheless is one. It made Feinberg look like a blubbering fool, and more to the point, made Kelly look even more the stern prosecutor. What Kelly left out was Feinberg’s explanation — that he could not definitively answer Kelly’s question because it could frustrate President Trump’s talks to end the Ukraine war. “There’s a very tense negotiation going on now,” Feinberg told Kelly, as reported by The Hill. “I don’t think some person who’s not informed on this, not involved in discussions, should make statements public that could undermine what the president and the secretary’s intent is.” That’s more than mere blubbering. But it also underscores the lies of Donald Trump, who has maneuvered himself to a place where he blames Ukraine for the war, calls its leader a “dictator” and soft pedals Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin, the monster, lies to President Trump Putin is, in fact, a monster who started a war that has killed anywhere from 110,000 to 500,000 people and maybe more. We just don’t know. Such is the fog of war. Putin’s soldiers have summarily murdered Ukrainian civilians, kidnapped Ukrainian children and leveled entire cities. The monster also lies. He pretends to be the friend of the United States. He endearingly calls our president “Donald.” This may fool Trump. It should fool no one. Meanwhile, the leaders of Europe and Canada preformed their own theater of the absurd this week by winging to Kiev and swearing undying support for Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. What nonsense. Europe lies about its support for Ukraine For three years, Ukraine has been in the maw of the Russian bear while Europe and Canada (and the Biden White House and GOP-led Congress, for that matter) nattered on about Ukrainian courage while refusing to provide adequate material and financial support to defeat the Russians. The Europeans have spent more than the Americans, for sure, but even the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the ******* research institute that tracks such funding, notes that the donor countries, and in particular the Europeans, have provided “low” support for Ukraine. The institute also slams Europeans for putting “small domestic priorities” ahead of a war that is central to Europe’s defense. Germans pay three times more per year for tax subsidies for diesel fuel than they do for military aid for Ukraine, the institute’s Christoph Trebesch said. “When looking at the government budgets in most European donor countries, Ukraine aid over the last 3 years looks more like a minor political ‘**** project’ rather than a major fiscal effort.” Worse yet, the governments of Europe have been dropping their guard for decades, underfunding their defense budgets and leaving it to the United States to protect them against the authoritarian and historic enemies to the east. Europe hardly even funds its own defense So, when Donald Trump bilaterally begins peace negotiations with the Russians, there’s a realpolitik logic to it. If the Europeans are unwilling to defend their own nations, why should the U.S. include them in peace talks? After Trump’s election and authoritarian-like bluster about America taking control of Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal, the Europeans began to imagine their continent without an American defense umbrella. Some pulled the alarm and said it is time to raise defense budgets as high as 5% of GDP. This panic was too much for Benjamin Tallis, one of the heavy hitters in European security and the director of the Democratic Strategy Initiative, a political think tank in Berlin. Opinion: At first I laughed at Trump. Not any longer “I find it interesting and a little regretful that some people have spoken since Trump’s remarks about a wake-up call or about plunging Europe into chaos with these calls for 5% defense spending,” he told Deutsche Welle TV. “If this is what it took to plunge you into chaos, you haven’t been paying attention for the last three years.” “… (We) made ourselves considerably dependent upon the United States for our security. There’s nothing wrong with being good allies, but that means really paying your way and doing your share, and that’s where Europeans and Canadians have been rather delinquent. So, we’ve left ourselves without the true capabilities to stand up for ourselves.” Then there’s Trump, the biggest liar of them all Meanwhile, Ukraine has turned into a meatgrinder, tearing up the young men of the two warring states. “(Casualty) estimates suggest Russia has lost over 700,000 killed or injured, while Ukraine has lost around 400,000, with tens of thousands missing,” said Konstantin Sonin, a Russian exile, Putin critic and professor of public policy at the University Chicago. “Yet the front lines remain largely static, resembling a war of attrition reminiscent of World War I trench warfare.” Now, Donald Trump has reframed the global discussion about Ukraine from war to peace with this observation: “We’re losing all those soldiers. And they’re not American soldiers, they’re Ukrainian and Russian soldiers, but when you’re talking about a million-and-a-half, I think you’ve got to bring that one to an end.” A peace that rewards Russia for its bloody theft and cruelty will only provoke future wars. So, I’m glad to see Mark Kelly lean hard into would-be Trump defense advisers. But if the United States manages to shepherd this mess to a lasting and just peace, then the biggest liar of them all, Donald Trump, will have landed on the conflict’s most cogent truth: “We’ve got to stop that war.” Phil Boas is an editorial columnist with The Arizona Republic. Israel is testing DNA samples to confirm they are the remains of Shlomo Mansour, 86, Ohad Yahalomi, 50, Tsachi Idan, 50, and Itzik Elgarat, 69, all of whom were taken by ****** in the 7 October 2023 attacks. Early on Thursday, Israel began releasing more than 600 ************ prisoners, with dozens returned to the occupied West Bank and Gaza, where they were met by jubilant crowds. It will be the final exchange of the first phase of the ceasefire deal, which is due to end on Saturday. Israel is yet to confirm the results of DNA tests carried out on the four bodies returned as part of the exchange. Initial tests were expected to happen close to the Israel-Gaza border, and Israeli media later reported they were transported to a forensics laboratory in Tel Aviv. It comes after the body of a ************ woman from Gaza was handed over by ****** to Israel instead of the body of Israeli Shiri Bibas last Thursday, provoking fury in Israel. ****** said it was a misidentification and later handed a body over to Israel confirmed to be that of Bibas. ****** handed the bodies over privately, with no public ceremony, as Israel demanded, unlike in previous exchanges. Israel has accused ****** of “humiliating” handover ceremonies – and delayed last weekend’s prisoner release because of what it said was the cruel treatment of hostages at the handovers. Before Wednesday’s releases, a ****** official told the AFP news agency that the return of the four bodies would take place “without public presence to prevent the occupation from finding any pretext for delay or obstruction”. Photos released by the Reuters news agency showed a bus carrying what are believed to be ************ prisoners out of Ofer Prison in the West Bank late on Wednesday. The ************ prisoners expected to be released include more than 400 Gazans detained by Israeli forces during the war and 50 prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails. In a statement via the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, Tsachi’s family said it is “with great sadness” that they have learnt “our beloved Tsachi is no longer alive and that his body will be returned to Israel during the night”. Itzik Elgarat, 69, was kidnapped from Nir Oz, and reportedly shot in the hand during the attack. His phone was traced to Gaza after the attack. Ohad Yahalomi, 50, was abducted from Nir Oz, along with his 12-year-old son, Eitan, who was released during the November ceasefire. Strickland eyes two compelling priority WA gold targets Strickland eyes two compelling priority WA gold targets Strickland Metals has identified two new compelling targets near its 108,900-ounce Dusk ‘til Dawn gold camp with the potential for the targets to represent the core of a much larger gold system. The company is also planning to soon reveal an updated mineral resource at its Horse Well gold camp. Both areas are part of the company’s wider Yandal project in Western Australia. Strickland has been busy putting in some hard exploration yards over the summer ******* at the 257,000-ounce Yandal gold project, which is about 50 kilometres away from Northern Star Resources’ 10-million-ounce Jundee gold project in WA’s northeastern goldfields. From exploration work completed by the company during the past few months, two compelling targets have been identified from geophysical modelling and geochemical data analysis and considering their proximity to previous gold intersections at the site. Previous exploration at Dusk ‘til Dawn has uncovered a large-scale hydrothermal alteration system with subsequent drilling defining a 108,900 gold ounce resource. Management believes the large scale and intensity of alteration suggests significant fluid flow, potentially pointing to a large, mineralised gold system. It believes gold at Dusk is one of many second-order splays towards the outer edge of the system. The newly identified targets could represent the core of a much ******* gold system than has been so far discovered. The company says the targets have the hallmarks of a huge system and the mineralisation in the Dusk camp possesses a different style of mineralisation to that discovered elsewhere in the project’s ground. Strickland views the Dusk-style mineralisation as a discrete project within the broader Yandal project. The company plans to assault 7.5km of untested prospective strike with a drill bit and expects Dusk to be the prime focus of its exploration programs planned for this year. It expects to shortly reveal these plans to the market. While the focus of drilling late last year was on the 6.69-million-ounce gold-equivalent Rogozna project in Serbia, we are very excited to continue advancing the Yandal project during the 2025 field season. The company’s focus remains on advancing both the Rogozna and Yandal projects in tandem, an important part of which includes the release of an updated mineral resource estimate for Horse Well in March 2025. Strickland is laser-focused on its Horse Well gold camp, comprising a 148,100-ounce resource spread across its Palomino-Filly-Filly SW and Warmblood deposits. A significant reverse circulation and diamond drilling program was completed at the gold camp last year, targeting high-value ounces from shallow oxide material at the Palomino and Warmblood deposits, considered suitable for open pit mining. Additional drilling was conducted along strike and down-plunge, targeting depth extensions to previously identified mineralisation to assess the potential for underground mining. All deposits remains open along strike and down-plunge. To improve its understanding and confidence of the mineralisation to include in the upcoming resource update, the company conducted further drilling at several advanced targets – Bronco, Konik and Marwari. The company says it successfully achieved its objectives and expects to provide an updated resource by the end of March. It has lodged a mining licence application for the Horse Well camp, which it expects to progress as a matter of priority. The company plans to unlock serious value at Horse Well this year and the mining licence is critical to achieving that aim by advancing the project towards development. Strickland has wowed the market with a series of stunning assay results since acquiring the Rogozna gold project in Serbia in April last year, which it has progressed to a gold equivalent resource of 6.69m ounces. Significant hits in gold-equivalent grades at Rogozna include 545.7 metres running 1.1 grams per tonne (g/t), 308.4m grading 1.9g/t and 89.7m going 4g/t, indicating the potential for a monster project as it continues with further drilling programs. The company remains well cashed-up with an enviable $33.8 million in cash and ASX-listed Northern Star Resources shares at the end of 2024. Strickland set itself on a golden path long before the precious metal set new heights as its price surged ever skywards. With the yellow metal trading today at US$2913 (A$4620) per ounce, the company appears to have chosen the right path to follow. Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting? Haiti gangs launch deadly attack on capital’s Delmas neighborhood Haiti gangs launch deadly attack on capital’s Delmas neighborhood By Steven Aristil and Mickenson Duverger PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Armed gangs launched a fresh attack on Haiti’s capital before dawn on Tuesday, killing residents in the Delmas 30 neighborhood and causing more residents to flee as gangs continue to operate unchecked in the Caribbean nation. More than 1 million Haitians – close to 10% of the Caribbean’s most populous country – have been internally displaced due to a years-long conflict in which well-funded and broadly allied armed gangs have expanded and cemented their control over much of the capital and surrounding areas. Police did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. “We haven’t slept since the day before yesterday because everyone was panicking,” said local resident Alex Josue, saying he believed around 15 people had been killed. “I have a friend who sells meat at the Delmas 30 market and they burned him in front of his child,” he said. “A woman who lived very close to me was taken with her child, and they burned them.” “I don’t know whether to go up or down, left or right,” added Josue. “Wherever the gangs go, we run.” Local rights group RNDDH’s program director Rosy Auguste Ducena said her organization was not yet able to estimate a death count, but there were reports of several people being killed or shot at, and several houses set on fire. “According to the information we’ve received, the armed gangs are on the rampage. They attack several areas at the same time, and it’s always the same modus operandi: *******, arson, gunshot wounds, *****, and so on,” Ducena said. “Each time, the victims try to flee and find refuge in often unlikely places,” she added. In Delmas 30, residents fled the scene carrying mattresses and other goods on their heads. One man pushed a corpse in a wheelbarrow. A local resident, who asked not to be identified, said the area had been facing deadly attacks since 1 a.m. (0600 GMT), and appealed to Jimmy Cherizier, a former policeman who leads the Viv Ansanm gang coalition that is looking to become a political party. “The population is fleeing, they don’t know where to go,” the person said. “What have we done to you?” (Reporting by Steven Aristil, Mickenson Duverger and Harold Isaac; Writing by Sarah Morland; Editing by Lincoln Feast) Source link #Haiti #gangs #launch #deadly #attack #capitals #Delmas #neighborhood Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

BBC Komla Dumor Award 2025 launched BBC Komla Dumor Award 2025 launched The BBC is seeking a rising star of African journalism for the BBC News Komla Dumor Award, which is now in its 10th year. Journalists from across Africa are invited to apply for the award, which aims to uncover and promote fresh talent from the continent. The winner will spend three months at the BBC headquarters in London, gaining skills and experience. Applications close on 20 March 2025 at 23:59 GMT. The award honours the legacy of Komla Dumor, a distinguished Ghanaian broadcaster and former BBC World News presenter, who died suddenly aged 41 a decade ago. Dumor’s widow, Kwansema Dumor, said she was “proud” of her husband’s impact at the BBC, and also said her family were “thankful to the BBC for remembering him” through the prize. The BBC is encouraging journalists from across Africa to apply for the prize, which seeks to promote and celebrate outstanding journalistic talent on the continent. As well as receiving training, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that they have researched, with the report broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences. Known for championing robust, dynamic journalism, Dumor made a significant impact on Africa and the rest of the world. The BBC is committed to continuing his legacy through the award by empowering journalists from Africa to tell original and nuanced African stories to international audiences. Rukia Bulle from Kenya was last year’s winner. During her placement, she travelled to a Senegalese village to report on the Baye Fall, an unorthodox ******* ********* who are often misunderstood by others in the wider faith. Jonathan Munro, BBC News global director and deputy CEO, said: “We are proud to launch this year’s BBC News Komla Dumor award and the search for the next recipient. “Marking its 10th anniversary is a testament to Komla Dumor’s powerful legacy of reporting on African stories with depth, insight and integrity. “Past winners of the award reflect the exceptional talent across the continent so I look forward to welcoming this year’s winner and strongly encourage journalists to apply.” Dumor was the presenter of Focus on Africa, the BBC’s first-ever dedicated daily TV news programme in English for African audiences. It was broadcast on BBC World News, which has now merged with the BBC News Channel to create a single 24-hour TV news service. He was also one of the lead presenters for BBC World News’ European morning segment. He joined the BBC in 2007 after a decade of broadcast journalism in his native Ghana where he won the Ghana Journalist of the Year award. Between 2007 and 2009 he hosted Network Africa on BBC World Service, before joining The World Today programme. In 2009 Dumor became the first host of the African business news programme on BBC World News, Africa Business Report. He travelled across Africa, meeting Africa’s top entrepreneurs and reporting on the latest business trends around the continent. In 2013 Dumor featured in New African magazine’s list of the 100 most influential Africans. Scientists track new predator as it moves into Arctic waters — here’s why this could be catastrophic for the rest of the world Scientists track new predator as it moves into Arctic waters — here’s why this could be catastrophic for the rest of the world Killer whales, also known as orcas, have officially made the Arctic Ocean their home — something that was nearly impossible until now. Historically, thick ice sheets blocked the whales from venturing into these frigid waters, but as rising temperatures melt the ice, new pathways have opened up, as detailed by Mongabay. What’s happening? Researchers at the University of Manitoba recently identified two small, genetically distinct populations of orcas now living in Arctic waters year-round. The discovery, published in Global Change Biology, was a surprise to even the research team, who expected to find a single migrating group rather than two separate populations. Researchers explained that tracking these animals is no easy task. Using genetic testing from skin and blubber samples, the team confirmed that these Arctic orcas are unique, meaning they may not even recognize one another as potential mates. Why is this important? The arrival of killer whales in the Arctic is more than just an interesting ecological shift — it has the potential to disrupt an already fragile marine ecosystem. These apex predators are now able to hunt Arctic whales like belugas, narwhals, and bowhead whales, which were previously protected by sea ice. “The arctic whales are just chubby, slow, and delicious,” said evolutionary geneticist Colin Garroway, underscoring how vulnerable these prey species are to orcas, per Mongabay. While there are still hundreds of thousands of Arctic whales compared to a few hundred killer whales, the long-term impacts of this shift remain uncertain. Beyond the ecological consequences, this change is also a concern for Indigenous communities who rely on Arctic whales for food, culture, and economy. The continued presence of killer whales could impact sustainable hunting traditions that have existed for generations. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? What’s being done about it? Researchers are tracking Arctic killer whale populations using satellite tags and genetic analysis to understand their movements and impact. Government agencies, including the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, are evaluating policies to protect vulnerable Arctic species. The Arctic Council is pushing for stricter conservation efforts, while global climate initiatives aim to slow ice loss. Indigenous communities are partnering with scientists to integrate traditional knowledge into conservation strategies. These combined efforts could help manage the ecological shift and protect Arctic marine life from further disruption. The presence of orcas in the Arctic is just one of the many signs that our planet is shifting — but the good news is that there are still steps we can take to protect the delicate balance of this unique and vital ecosystem. Self-Made Millionaire Warns 90% Of People Are Throwing Away Money On This Expense Self-Made Millionaire Warns 90% Of People Are Throwing Away Money On This Expense Self-Made Millionaire Warns 90% Of People Are Throwing Away Money On This Expense Restaurant spending is the largest potential source of savings for most couples, according to financial expert and self-made millionaire Ramit Sethi. “For 90% of the people I talk to, food — whether eating out or ordering in — is the biggest category where there’s money to free up and redirect into something that matters more,” Sethi told CNBC. The author and Netflix host identified a host of factors that make dining expenses particularly difficult to control. “Food is emotional — buying dinner is about a lot more than just hunger. It’s about convenience, impulsivity, reward and more,” he explained. Don’t Miss: Tracking those expenses proves especially challenging for couples. The spending often happens across multiple payment methods, locations, and circumstances—from workplace lunches to family pizza nights, social outings, and children’s meal money sent through payment apps. “It’s a mishmash, and it can easily get away from you,” Sethi said. In his new book “Money for Couples,” Sethi outlined a 10-step program for partners to develop shared financial vision despite differing money perspectives. He recommends couples consolidate restaurant spending on a single shared credit card to improve tracking and visibility. Several individuals who worked with Sethi shared their strategies for reducing food spending. Mary found a meat delivery service that enabled more home cooking during weeknights, allowing guilt-free weekend dining. Trending: Are you rich? Here’s what Americans think you need to be considered wealthy. Lauren, someone who worked with Sethi, created themed potluck dinner parties to capture restaurant ambiance at lower cost. Rosana implemented a twice-weekly cooking schedule with planned leftovers, directing her savings toward credit card debt reduction. “We were eating out at least five to six days a week; the only meal we were making at home was breakfast!” Rosana, another colleague, told Sethi. “Now, we cook every Wednesday and Sunday and we eat leftovers at least one night, which saves us a ton of money.” The financial expert said that changing food habits requires partners to be “kind and supportive of each other,” noting that “changing habits around food can be tricky.” See Also: ‘Which Bucket Do I Draw From First?’ Suze Orman Explains To 67-Year-Old The Best Order For Tapping Into Her Retirement Accounts Sethi recommends couples start with honest conversations about spending patterns, “what are you spending too much on? Where can you cut back?” Story Continues His approach focuses on identifying “invisible spending” that occurs without conscious decision-making. By bringing food expenses into awareness, couples can redirect funds toward priorities that bring greater satisfaction than convenience meals. “The more you have open, honest conversations about these things, the easier it will be to spend meaningfully,” Sethi said.
