  3. Succession-like feud engulfs Singapore’s richest family Succession-like feud engulfs Singapore’s richest family A Succession-like feud has engulfed one of Singapore’s richest families as Kwek Leng Beng, the executive chairman of property firm City Developments Limited (CDL), accused his son Sherman, who is the firm’s chief executive, of plotting a boardroom takeover. The elder Mr Kwek, who is 84 this year, along with CDL, filed court papers on Wednesday accusing his son, two other board members and a group of directors of trying to take control of the firm. “This is necessary to deal with this attempted coup at the board level and restore corporate integrity,” he said. CDL, which is the Singapore’s biggest listed property developer, has halted trading in its shares on the financial hub’s stock exchange. “We intend to change the chief executive officer at the appropriate time,” Kwek Leng Beng and CDL said in a statement. If Sherman Kwek is removed as chief executive, the company plans to replace him on an interim basis with his cousin Kwek Eik Sheng. The dispute centres on an email sent by CDL’s corporate secretary nominating two additional independent directors on the night of 28 January, the eve of the Lunar New Year – which marks the start of a major holiday in Singapore. The row has attracted public attention in a part of the world in which battles over family businesses are not uncommon and have been known to end up in court. After Wednesday’s court hearing, CDL said the two new directors had agreed to not exercise any powers until further notice. The company later said Sherman Kwek would remain in the role until the issue was resolved. Sherman Kwek said he and the majority of CDL’s board were disappointed by what he described as extreme actions taken by his father “regarding this disagreement around the size and make-up of the CDL board.” Kwek Leng Beng, along with his father and brother, took control of then-loss-making CDL in 1971. He became the firm’s executive chairman after his father’s death in 1995. It now has more than 160 hotel, residential and commercial properties around the world and forms part of a multi-billion dollar family empire. Measures proposed in the review, commissioned by the previous government and led by Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertin, are understood to include making it ******** to possess or publish ************ showing women being choked during sex. After her appointment by Rishi Sunak’s government, Baroness Bertin made it clear she would not be approaching the topic from a prudish or disapproving position. She will make 32 recommendations on what should be done about the “high-harm sector” of legal online ************. The review, due to be published later, is expected to argue that porn videos considered too harmful for any certificate in the offline world should be banned online. Non-fatal strangulation is already an offence if someone does not consent but its depiction online is not ********. The review suggests ************ websites have normalised such behaviour in the real world, with violent and degrading material rife on mainstream platforms amid a “total absence of government scrutiny”. The Department for Science Innovation and Technology has said it will respond to the recommendations once they have been laid before Parliament. Measures to increase regulation of ************, including to prevent access by children, are already part of the Online Safety Act, which became law in October 2023. Services that publish their own pornographic content – including with generative AI tools – are already required to have age checks. 10. OnlyFans Star Claims $50 Million in Net Earnings! OnlyFans Star Claims $50 Million in Net Earnings! Sophie Rain, a 20-year-old social media sensation, OnlyFans creator, and a “Devout Christian” has once again set the internet ablaze with her latest financial milestone. The young star recently announced that her net profits from the platform have officially surpassed $50 million, which is a staggering figure that has left social media users both impressed and skeptical. A Meteoric Rise to Fame Just two years ago, Sophie Rain was another aspiring influencer navigating TikTok and Instagram, building an online presence with her engaging and often provocative content. However, it wasn’t until she launched her OnlyFans account in early 2023 that her career skyrocketed into unprecedented financial success. In a short span of time, Rain has transformed herself into one of the highest-earning creators on the platform, raking in millions through subscriptions, pay-per-view content, and personal interactions with fans. Reports indicate that from November 2023 to November 2024, she earned a jaw-dropping $43 million in net profit a figure that outshined even some of the most well-known OnlyFans stars. Sophie’s Bold Announcement: “Halfway to $100M” Rain took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her latest milestone, posting a screenshot of her earnings along with a simple but powerful caption: “Half way to $100m thank you all so much.” If that wasn’t enough of a flex, she followed up with another tweet to clarify: “$50m in NET profit by the way, can’t wait for $100m next year.” The internet immediately exploded with reactions some applauding her business acumen, others questioning the legitimacy of her numbers. However, with past reports confirming her astronomical earnings, it seems clear that Rain has turned her OnlyFans career into an absolute cash machine. The Secret Behind Sophie’s Success So how exactly did Sophie Rain achieve such mind-blowing financial success in such a short *******? Her formula for making millions appears to be a combination of: A massive and engaged fanbase – Rain built a strong following on TikTok and Instagram before launching her OnlyFans, ensuring that she already had a dedicated audience willing to pay for her content. High-priced subscriptions and pay-per-view content – Unlike many creators who charge lower rates, Rain’s exclusive content comes at a premium, allowing her to generate massive profits. Strategic marketing and social media presence – She consistently teases her OnlyFans content on other platforms, generating intrigue and maximizing conversions. Her ability to create an online persona that is both alluring and mysterious has also played a huge role in her success. Despite her provocative career, Rain maintains that she is a devout Christian and has publicly stated that she is a virgin, a claim that has only fueled more discussion and controversy around her. The Controversy and Criticism Like many OnlyFans success stories, Rain’s rise to fame has not been without its share of criticism and skepticism. Some internet users have questioned whether her earnings are exaggerated, while others have accused her of misleading her audience with her carefully curated public persona. Additionally, Rain has dealt with serious security issues, including stalkers and impersonation scams. With her skyrocketing fame, scammers have used her images to catfish unsuspecting men online, tricking them into sending money to fake accounts. She has openly discussed the dangers of online impersonation, warning fans to be cautious. “I see people using my pictures to scam guys every day. It’s creepy and dangerous,” Rain told the New York Post in an interview. Inside the “Bop House”: The OnlyFans Mansion In addition to her solo success, Rain has co-founded the “Bop House” in Miami, a luxury mansion where multiple OnlyFans creators live and collaborate. The content house has generated millions in revenue, but it has also been the subject of major controversy. Reports suggest that the mansion has become a magnet for stalkers, leading to serious safety concerns. Some critics have also raised ethical questions about the age of its youngest residents, arguing that the house creates a problematic environment for young influencers. Despite the backlash, Rain and her fellow creators continue to defend their lifestyle, emphasizing that the house is a business venture rather than a reckless party mansion. What’s Next for Sophie Rain? With $50 million already in the bank and a goal of hitting $100 million in net profit, it’s clear that Sophie Rain has no plans of slowing down. She remains a polarizing but undeniably successful figure, embodying both the opportunity and controversy that come with modern internet fame. Whether you love her or hate her, there’s no denying that Sophie Rain has mastered the digital economy and she’s only getting started. 12. Coles reports sales and earnings boost from Woolworths strike Coles reports sales and earnings boost from Woolworths strike Coles boss Leah Weckert says the grocery giant moved quickly to take advantage of the pre-Christmas strike at rival Woolworths, adding $120 million in extra sales and $20m in earnings in the first half of the financial year. Ms Weckert on Thursday said Coles was boosted by improved stock availability and investment in its private label to report earnings of $1.08 billion in the six months to January, marginally up from $1.06b recorded a year ago. Net profit fell 3 per cent to $576m as a result of a $35m hit in one-off costs related to a new automatic distribution centre in Victoria. Both results were above market expectations, sending shares up to a record high of $20.38. Along with the half-year results, Coles also announced long-time chair James Graham would leave the board at the end of April and be replaced by Peter Allen — the former chief executive of Westfield shopping centre owner Scentre Group. The strong result for Coles’ 858 supermarkets — where sales and earnings jumped 4.3 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively — was boosted by a ramp-up in stock during a 17-day strike by Woolworths’ warehouse workers late last year that left shelves bare. “We showed our ability to execute in the lead up to Christmas, when we responded at pace to the supply chain disruption faced by our major competitor,” Ms Weckert said. “Our automated distribution centres in both Queensland and in New South Wales, we used to bring stock into Victoria and the ACT to make sure those stores had sufficient stock. “The key thing we had to deliver on was if you were going to a store and the shelves were very empty and you couldn’t get what you needed, what you wanted to do was go to a store that had lots of products on the shelves.” Woolworths on Wednesday revealed its net profit for the first half dropped 20.6 per cent, with boss Amanda Bardwell saying it lost customers to competitors during the disruptions. But Ms Weckert was realistic about its ability to retain new customers because “50 per cent of a customer’s choice is made on convenience”. “Those customers that have to drive a lot further to get to our store . . . were willing to do it when there wasn’t any stock on the shelf at their preferred store,” she said. “That’s probably not going to continue on into the future.” Earnings at its struggling liquor arm — which includes the Liquorland and Vintage Cellars brands — slumped 20.2 per cent to $67m. Ms Weckert also said food inflation had eased, with supermarket inflation down to one per cent — excluding tobacco — from 7.4 per cent two years ago. “While the (Reserve Bank’s) decision on rates last week is welcomed news for many families, we remain acutely aware of the ongoing cost of living pressures,” she said. “Customers are telling us they are cutting back on treats, meat and alcohol, buying more specials and cheaper brands.” It declared a fully franked interim dividend of 37¢ per share, up from 36¢. 13. Jeff Bezos Announces That Washington Post Opinions Will Now Exclusively Celebrate the Glories of Capitalism Jeff Bezos Announces That Washington Post Opinions Will Now Exclusively Celebrate the Glories of Capitalism The free market just got a little more so today, thanks to the benevolent decree of one of the richest men who’s ever lived. Seriously though, an email from Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos to the newspaper’s staff is now saying the quiet part out loud: the newspaper will no longer tolerate opinions its billionaire backer disproves of. “I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages,” the email begins. “We are going to be writing every day in support of defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.” “We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others,” Bezos continues. “There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.” The brave new pillars come in the aftermath of a 10 percent drop in subscribers from Bezos’ decision not to let the paper endorse a presidential candidate, which was widely decried as an egregious example of a media boss steering its coverage for his own personal benefit. To say this latest announcement went over poorly might be an understatement. As a result of Bezos’ mandate of freedom, WaPo’s opinion editor, David Shipley, announced his resignation. A number of the paper’s current and former employees have condemned the decision, with former executive editor Marty Baron telling the Daily Beast he was “sad and disgusted” at Bezos’ decision to put his business interests over those of independent journalism. “Massive encroachment by Jeff Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section today,” wrote the Post’s lead economics journalist Jeff Stein. “[It] makes clear dissenting views will not be published or tolerated there.” Despite harsh backlash, WaPo has long been eyed by media critics for its blatant conflicts of interests tied to the billionaire’s involvement, though that criticism has sometimes been overshadowed by the newspaper’s lipservice to vaguely progressive ideals. If there’s one thing to praise the tech mogul for, its that he’s finally putting his cards on the table. “I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America,” wrote the 3rd richest man in the world. “I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion.” Credit where it’s due: it takes a lot of gall to make that claim as a man whose net worth eclipses that of most nations, enjoying a personal utopia in a country where billionaires own more than half the population combined. While Bezos’ executive order may seem like a right turn for a staple of mainstream media, it might be better understood as a “mask off” moment, a rare but honest peek behind the curtain. When we look at his moves in context with his fellow captains of industry, it’s not so surprising. Fellow travler Elon Musk, for example, made a massive play to secure his own media empire by purchasing X-formerly-Twitter, a platform he can now bend as he likes to shape the political landscape, with no need to fake impartiality. Mark Zuckerberg likewise helms a massive social media conglomerate in Meta, which he routinely uses to flout democracy for his own gain. In reality, the great majority of news outlets in western society are owned by for-profit corporations and billionaires. Far from underserved, Bezos’ “free market pillar” is the dominant viewpoint in our media and our lives. At least they’re finally owning up to it. 16. Landowners of nearly a century make deal with the city of Austin to protect it Landowners of nearly a century make deal with the city of Austin to protect it AUSTIN (KXAN) – The owners of Shield Ranch – a 6,600-acre swath of land spanning Travis and Hays Counties – made a deal with the city of Austin to conserve some of its vulnerable land and protect it from development. Last week, the ranch announced that it was selling to the city over 200 acres of its property to become a conservation easement – an agreement to prevent development into future generations. This allows the land to stay within the family while protecting vulnerable land. 98% of the entire ranch is now protected wildland, according to the Shield-Ayres-Bowen family. “We have a long history – pushing 90 years – of connection with the land, and we’ve come to appreciate the value it represents,” said Bob Ayers, a co-owner of the ranch. “This [agreement] is a way that we can realize a portion of its value – which matters to the family – and still see it protected for future generations of our family and the larger community.” Shield Ranch houses 10% of the Barton Spring Watershed. Conservationists hope preventing development in the area will protect water quality. “Anywhere humans develop there’s going to be impacts,” said Lindsey Sydow, a hydrologist with the Watershed Protection Department. “We can do our best, but anywhere you put pavement, have cars, and have people generating wastewater and other waste there’s going to be some level of impact,” she continued. The new conservation easement represents the final purchase made possible through a 2018 bond election. Among other propositions, voters in 2018 approved Proposition D, releasing $184 million for flood mitigation, open space, and water quality protection. “Conservation easements protect the property in perpetuity,” Sydow said. “This program is primarily for protecting water – recharging the Edwards Aquifer – but it can have all these other benefits as well, [including] biodiversity and other ecosystem services.” While the Shield-Ayres-Bowen still made money from the deal, had they chosen to develop on the land, they would have earned much more, said Jeff Francell, director of land protection for the Nature Conservancy in Texas. “If the family were of a different mindset, it’d be very likely that property would have been developed and water quality in Barton Creek and Barton Springs would be noticeably worse,” Francell said. 18. ******** warships may head to WA to circumnavigate Australia with a sharp message ******** warships may head to WA to circumnavigate Australia with a sharp message ******** warships are now in the Great *********** Bite and could be headed past Perth as the Asian giant shows off the might of its navy. Australia has been tracking the trio of ships, known as the People’s Liberation Army-Navy Task Group 107, since they moved through the Coral Sea and Torres Strait a fortnight ago. Their live fire exercises conducted with no notice while they were travelling south between Australia and New Zealand caused the diversion of 49 flights and sparked a political fight between the Albanese Government and the Coalition this week. By Thursday morning the ships had travelled around Tasmania and were headed into the Great *********** Bite. Peter Dean, the United States Studies Centre’s foreign policy and defence director, said ******** warships have operated off the northwest coast of WA on multiple occasions – albeit, without the added excitement of live firing. “This is the east coast getting a taste of what it’s like to live in Western Australia,” he said. “They’ve only come down to do intelligence collecting tasks in the past so this is a little bit different with the type of vessels that they’ve brought down and the behaviour they’ve done.” Adding to the intrigue is the presence of an American Virginia-class nuclear submarine, the USS Minnesota, that is currently docked at HMAS Stirling. It it the first of several US submarines scheduled to visit Perth this year as the rotations through WA under the AUKUS arrangements step up. There is no legal requirement under the law of the sea for China to give notice of where its navy travels, unless it enters Australia’s territorial waters, closer to the coastline. Professor Dean said it was probably 50-50 on whether the ******** ships would continue heading west and circumnavigate Australia, or turn around and back the way they’ve come. But the answer to that question would lay bare China’s intentions with the military excursion. If they wanted to make port visits or engage with other countries, they would turn around and head back towards where other nations were locations. “The ******** are not on their way to anywhere. We’re not on the way to anywhere. We’re at the bottom of Asia, there’s nowhere else to go,” Professor Dean said. “So they’re here for one reason and one reason only, and that is a demonstration of their power and to make some military and political points. If they go to Western Australia, that will become an even sharper message.” Defence Minister Richard Marles said it was “completely possible” the ******** navy would end up circumnavigating Australia – continuing east then heading up along WA’s coast. “What we will do is surveil them, firstly to ascertain that they are acting in accordance with international law – and to this point in time they have, a very important point to understand, even in the context of the live firing,” he told Sky News. “In an ongoing sense, the most important thing is for us to be able to observe all their movements, all their formations so that at the end of the day we can reach an assessment about what is being sought to be achieved by this mission on the part of the ********.” Source link #******** #warships #circumnavigate #Australia #sharp #message Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  19. Drugs, violence, prostitution targeted by Phoenix Police in I-17 cleanup Drugs, violence, prostitution targeted by Phoenix Police in I-17 cleanup The Brief The Phoenix Police Department says it’s working to clean up a portion of I-17 that’s known for drugs, prostitution and violence. FOX 10 spoke with a resident in the area who was frank about the activity he has seen. PHOENIX – The I-17 corridor in Phoenix, known for being a hub for crime, prostitution and drugs, is getting cleaned up. Why you should care The Phoenix Police Department says it’s made new improvements that are starting to curb all the illicit activity. A FOX 10 crew was in the area on Feb. 25, and said it was still a bit rough, and “saw a little bit of everything.” They also saw a lot of new crime-fighting technology that allows officers to respond quicker and find criminals faster. The backstory A resident named Tony has lived along the I-17 corridor in the same apartment building for nine years. He was quite frank about the experience. “It’s drug addicts, it’s whores, we have transvestites,” he said. Phoenix Police are well aware of what is taking place around Indian School Road to Bell Road and along Hatcher Road in West Sunnyslope. That’s why the city has spent $9 million dollars to clean it up. “So, it really isn’t great. We’ve had several overdoses about a year and a half ago. We’ve had shootings here at night,” Tony said. As you drive around the area now, you’ll notice gunshot detection systems, traffic cameras and license plate readers. Police say the technological monitoring will provide real-time intelligence to officers in the field. Then, there’s the Royal Inn. It’s considered a prolific neighborhood problem and a major hub of illicit activity. Here’s what residents had to say about it just last fall: “It’s not a secret. We all know what happens here.” “There would be a lot of hookers. Even in the morning when little kids were walking by.” Now, the Royal Inn is seized and boarded up. By the numbers Phoenix Police reported it has conducted 60 operations for prostitution-related offenses, arresting more than 400 suspects and rescuing 30 juveniles. What they’re saying Phoenix Councilwoman Betty Guardado says, “We are making strides toward a safer community.” Phoenix *** Interim Chief Michael Sullivan says, “These efforts are making a significant impact on safety in what has been a hot spot for prostitution in Phoenix.” Tony says he doesn’t notice much change. “Very little. 20. Nvidia warns of competition from China’s Huawei, despite U.S. sanctions Nvidia warns of competition from China’s Huawei, despite U.S. sanctions BEIJING — Chip giant Nvidia has flagged heightened competition from Huawei, despite U.S. restrictions on the ******** telecommunications company. In an annual filing Wednesday, Nvidia listed Huawei among its current competitors, including it in the list for a second straight year. The company, blacklisted by the U.S. for national security reasons, did not feature among Nvidia’s competitors for at least three prior years. Nvidia listed Huawei among its competitors in four of five categories, including chips, cloud services, computing processing and networking products. “There’s a fair amount of competition in China,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC’s Jon Fortt Wednesday. “Huawei, other companies, are … quite vigorous and very, very competitive,” Huang said. Since 2019, the U.S. has restricted Huawei’s ability to access technology from American suppliers, from advanced 5G chips to Google’s Android operating system. Huawei’s revenue exceeded 860 billion yuan ($118.27 billion) in 2024, state media reported, a 22% jump in revenue from 2023, and the fastest growth since a 32% increase in 2016, according to CNBC calculations of publicly released figures. Huawei typically publishes its annual reports in March. The company’s revenue barely grew in 2020, and plunged by nearly 29% in 2021. Its consumer segment was hit hard, and even as revenue rose 17% year on year to 251.5 billion yuan in 2023, it was just over half of what the unit generated at its peak in 2020. The telecommunications company started to make a comeback in the smartphone market in 2023 with the release of its Mate 60 Pro in China. Reviews indicated the device offers download speeds associated with 5G — thanks to an advanced semiconductor chip. Just over a year later, Huawei launched the Mate 70 smartphone series that uses the company’s first fully self-developed operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. 25. Eagers Automotive shares storm higher on ‘sweet spot’ in surging hybrid sales Eagers Automotive shares storm higher on ‘sweet spot’ in surging hybrid sales Investors have sent shares in Australia’s biggest car dealer rocketing off the back of a buoyant trading outlook boosted by surging demand for hybrid vehicles and record sales of used cars. Eagers Automotive on Thursday reported a 25 per cent fall in annual profit to $223 million on record revenue of $11.2 billion, but investor focus was on management’s upbeat assessment of the company’s prospects. In particular, they were taken with the growing sales being recorded by Eagers’ retail joint venture with ******** carmaker BYD as Australians opt for cheaper hybrid cars over full electric vehicles from the likes of Tesla. Eagers shares surged 25 per cent before retreating to close 21 per cent, or $2.61, better at $15.06. The BYD partnership’s sales leapt 65 per cent in 2024 to 20,520 vehicles as the network expanded at a fast clip, with Eagers on Thursday citing the potential for an additional $38m in pre-tax annual earnings from the joint venture. Chief executive Keith Thornton said the hook-up with BYD had perfectly positioned Eagers to take advantage of the *********** motorist’s changing preferences. While sales growth in EVs has slowed, demand for hybrids, which are powered by a petrol or diesel motor and a battery that charges while the engine is firing, leapt 76 per cent last year. “What we’ve seen is that EVs have flatlined in Australia,” Mr Thornton said. “The big step up is in hybrids, it’s absolutely the sweet spot at the moment.” By July, BYD expects to have 100 salerooms around the country, with Eagers owning and operating about 70 of them. The group said the partnership would likely contribute $400m of the $1b in additional sales forecast by Eagers in 2025, boosted by 6000 orders for the BYD Shark utility. That would take group revenue out to more than $12.2b, up 44 per cent from three years ago. More to come.
