ASIC sues NAB over handling of financial hardship cases ASIC sues NAB over handling of financial hardship cases The financial regulator is suing National Australia Bank for failing 345 customers “at their most vulnerable” when they were applying for financial hardship. The *********** Securities and Investment Commission has filed the suit in the Federal Court alleging NAB and its subsidiary AFSH Nominees, a provider of white-label home loans under the brand Advantedge, did not respond to 345 hardship applications within the 21-day timeframe required by law between 2018 and 2023. ‘These customers included people who were domestic ********* victims, battling serious medical conditions, dealing with business closures or job loss. NAB’s failures likely compounded the already challenging situation for these people,” ASIC Chair Joe Longo said. ‘Amidst rising cost of living pressures, we have seen an increased number of customers reach out to their lenders for relief, and we have seen first-hand the impact on lives and livelihoods when lenders fail to appropriately support customers experiencing financial hardship.” The action follows ASIC’s action against Westpac in September 2023 for financial hardship misconduct. As interest rates *****, the big four banks have seen an uptick in bad and doubtful debts, with home loans 90 days past due rising in the first half of calendar year particularly. In recent earnings announcements, most banks declared that the growth in arrears have peaked and are plateauing. In response to the court action, NAB has apologised for the failings, and said it co-operate fully with the regulator. “We’re sorry that this happened when a number of our customers were in difficult situations and needed us to be there for them,” NAB Group Executive, Customer & Corporate Services, Sharon Cook “We are focussed on ensuring these customers receive the support they need.” “Following ASIC’s report into hardship practices across the industry, we have also been working on a new approach to supporting customers in financial difficulty. This includes consulting with consumer advocates.” in August 2023, ASIC reviewed financial hardship and expectations of lenders. In May this year, it issued a report highlighting failures of lenders to identify customers in financial stress, use of ‘cookie-cutter’ approaches to dealing with hardship requests, as well as onerous assessment and approval processes. For the 2023/2024 financial year 5,715 complaints were filed with *********** Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) regarding financial difficulty, an increase of 18% on the prior year. AFCA observed that “Too many of these complaints relate to poor treatment or ineffective communication during the hardship process. Urgent improvements are needed.” Source link #ASIC #sues #NAB #handling #financial #hardship #cases Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Biden’s green light for Ukraine to use ATACMS in Russia just raised the stakes in a war Trump will inherit Biden’s green light for Ukraine to use ATACMS in Russia just raised the stakes in a war Trump will inherit The decision by US President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to use long-range ********* missiles in Russia follows a familiar pattern. The White House refuses for months to grant a weapons request from Ukraine, fearing it would be escalatory. Kyiv loudly decries the refusal, and just when the request seems to have been parked, the Biden administration approves it. Ukraine’s request for HIMARS, Abrams tanks, F16s – all followed a similar pattern of refuse and prevaricate, and then grant, almost at the moment when it is too late. Is it too late for the US-made Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, to make a difference if it hits targets deep inside Russia? The answer is complex and perhaps explains some of the reluctance of the Biden administration to grant permission. Firstly, there is a limited supply of ATACMS that Ukraine can get its hands on. So even Kyiv being able to hit deep inside Russia – and the longer range of ATACMS is 100km or 62 miles – is not going to yield an overnight change in the battlefield. Analysts have listed the volume of Russian targets that are in range of these missiles – with the Institute for the Study of War listing hundreds of targets – after the Biden administration apparently briefed that Russian airfields in ATACMS range had seen their ******* aircraft evacuated deeper inside Russia. But really, Ukraine will not get enough ATACMS to alter the course of the war. Secondly, Ukraine has been able to penetrate deeper inside Russia using domestically manufactured and cheaper drones. The ******* States has agreed to help fund the development of these devices, which appear to have caused havoc around Moscow’s airports and across Russia’s energy infrastructure. Thirdly, the permission to use US precision missiles to hit deeper inside Russia is, as it sounds, quite provocative. It is true that Moscow is quite militarily weak now, and unlikely to seek full conflict with NATO or the US. But at some point, the Kremlin will seek to restore its deterrence. Moscow’s intelligence services have been blamed for sabotage of civilian targets across Europe, including recent reports that explosive packages were planted on courier planes inside Europe. The Biden administration was correct to weigh the practical utility of longer range strikes, against the potential for civilian collateral damage in NATO member states, if Russia felt obliged to somehow hit back. So it was not as simple or obvious decision as some advocates in Kyiv claimed. The wider goal seems to have been to get the Biden administration to put more skin in the game of Ukraine’s war – to truly takes the gloves off. Yet the White House is keen to stress the deployment of North Korean troops into Kursk fueled its decision – that this is the US’ response to Moscow’s escalation. Western officials have noted the North Korean deployment represents the Ukraine conflict expanding and becoming something that the ******* States’ Indo-Pacific adversaries now have a role in; that it has made the war slightly more global for America. In Biden’s eyes this is an escalation, in response to an escalation. But the fact he delayed so long because of the extraordinary symbolism of granting this permission just adds to the potency of the decision he just took. President-elect Donald Trump may think he can talk peace, but he will inherit a war where the stakes have just got significantly higher. How a viral, duct-taped banana came to be worth $1 million How a viral, duct-taped banana came to be worth $1 million Walk into any supermarket and you can generally buy a banana for less than $1. But a banana duct-taped to a wall? That might sell for more than $1 million at an upcoming auction at Sotheby’s in New York. The yellow banana fixed to the white wall with silver duct tape is a work entitled “Comedian,” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. It first debuted in 2019 as an edition of three fruits at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair, where it became a much-discussed sensation. Was it a prank? A commentary on the state of the art world? Another artist took the banana off the wall and ate it. A backup banana was brought in. Selfie-seeking crowds became so thick, “Comedian” was withdrawn from view, but three editions of it sold for between $120,000 and $150,000, according to Perrotin gallery. Now, the conceptual artwork has an estimated value of between $1 million and $1.5 million at Sotheby’s auction on Nov. 20. Sotheby’s head of contemporary art, David Galperin, calls it profound and provocative. “What Cattelan is really doing is turning a mirror to the contemporary art world and asking questions, provoking thought about how we ascribe value to artworks, what we define as an artwork,” Galperin said. Bidders won’t be buying the same fruit that was on display in Miami. Those bananas are long gone. Sotheby’s says the fruit always was meant to be replaced regularly, along with the tape. “What you buy when you buy Cattelan’s ‘Comedian’ is not the banana itself, but a certificate of authenticity that grants the owner the permission and authority to reproduce this banana and duct tape on their wall as an original artwork by Maurizio Cattelan,” Galperin said. The very title of the piece suggests Cattelan himself likely didn’t intend for it to be taken seriously. But Chloé Cooper Jones, an assistant professor at the Columbia University School of the Arts, said it is worth thinking about the context. Cattelan premiered the work at an art fair, visited by well-off art collectors, where “Comedian” was sure to get a lot of attention on social media. That might mean the art constituted a dare, of sorts, to the collectors to invest in something absurd, she said. If “Comedian” is just a tool for understanding the insular, capitalist, art-collecting world, Cooper Jones said, “it’s not that interesting of an idea.” But she thinks it might go beyond poking fun at rich people. Cattelan is often thought of a “trickster artist,” she said. “But his work is often at the intersection of the sort of humor and the deeply macabre. He’s quite often looking at ways of provoking us, not just for the sake of provocation, but to ask us to look into some of the sort of darkest parts of history and of ourselves.” And there is a dark side to the banana, a fruit with a history entangled with imperialism, labor exploitation and corporate power. “It would be hard to come up with a better, simple symbol of global trade and all of its exploitations than the banana,” Cooper Jones said. If “Comedian” is about making people think about their moral complicity in the production of objects they take for granted, then it’s “at least a more useful tool or it’s at least an additional sort of place to go in terms of the questions that this work could be asking,” she said. “Comedian” hits the block around the same time that Sotheby’s is also auctioning one of the famed paintings in the “Water Lilies” series by the French impressionist Claude Monet, with an expected value of around $60 million. When asked to compare Cattelan’s banana to a classic like Monet’s “Nymphéas,” Galperin says impressionism was not considered art when the movement began. “No important, profound, meaningful artwork of the past 100 years or 200 years, or our history for that matter, did not provoke some kind of discomfort when it was first unveiled,” Galperin said. West Indies vs England: Fifth T20 washed out by rain as visitors win series 3-1 West Indies vs England: Fifth T20 washed out by rain as visitors win series 3-1 The fifth and final T20 of the series between England and West Indies was washed out by heavy rain in St Lucia. England captain Jos Buttler chose to bowl first and the hosts reached 44-0 in five overs before the downpour began. The ground staff attempted to clear the wet outfield for a restart but the match was eventually abandoned without a result at 22:15 GMT. West Indies openers Evin Lewis and Shai Hope made 29 and 14 respectively, looking to add another commanding partnership following their 136 in nine overs in the fourth T20. England claim the T20 series 3-1, having lost the one-day international leg of the tour 2-1. Opener Phil Salt finished as the series’ leading run-scorer with 162 runs in four innings, including an unbeaten 103 in the first T20, with West Indies captain Rovman Powell second with 153. England seamer Saqib Mahmood was the leading wicket-taker and was rested for the final match, finishing with nine scalps in four matches. Diddy Accused Of ‘Corruptly Influencing’ Witnesses And Jurors While In Jail Diddy Accused Of ‘Corruptly Influencing’ Witnesses And Jurors While In Jail Sean “Diddy” Combs has been accused of violating jail rules in an attempt to “corruptly influence” witnesses and jurors in his ongoing legal battle. The rapper allegedly masterminded a sneaky plot to evade how his calls are monitored by paying other inmates to use their telephone accounts to make calls to people on the outside. Sean “Diddy” Combs is presently at a Brooklyn jail for his **** *******, with reports suggesting that some of his celebrity pals would be caught in the crosshairs if they don’t settle. Federal Prosecutors Claim Diddy Is ‘Corruptly Influencing’ Witnesses From Jail MEGA According to Page Six, Diddy has been slammed with several unsettling allegations as prosecutors accuse him of trying to “corruptly influence” his **** trafficking trial by evading how his calls are monitored, as well as “blackmailing victims” from his prison cell. The “Bad Boy for Life” rapper is currently locked up in jail at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, where he’ll stay until he goes to trial in May 2025. In a filing made on Friday, prosecutors claim he has “repeatedly” communicated with others in ways that violate the prison’s regulations. They noted that Diddy had used the telephone accounts of “at least eight other inmates” in an effort to avoid prosecutors monitoring his calls with people who aren’t on his contact list. To worsen it, he has allegedly gotten the other person on the call, including those on his contact list, to “add other individuals via three-way call.” “This practice is also not authorized by BOP [Federal Bureau of Prisons] as it helps conceal the identities of the contacted individuals,” the court documents read. “The defendant’s repeated circumvention of BOP regulations—starting almost immediately after arriving at MDC—speaks volumes about his ability to comply with any conditions of release.” Diddy Wants To Change Public Perception With PR Move MEGA Part of what prosecutors are accusing the embattled hip hop mogul of is his attempt to influence the way people see him by starting a “public relations” strategy that would “use public statements to alter public perception.” The prosecutors did not take this lightly, as it could seemingly undermine a free trial by influencing jurors to go with public sentiments. They also claimed that Diddy’s recent birthday celebration, which saw his kids take to their respective social media to celebrate him, was one of such “public relations” strategies, per Page Six. “At the defendant’s carefully curated direction, the defendant’s children posted a video to their respective social media accounts showing the defendant’s children gathered to celebrate the defendant’s birthday,” prosecutors noted. They added, “this kind of interference with a fair trial, the defendant’s own words make clear that his intent is to improperly influence the jury pool in this ********* proceeding.” The prosecutors further alleged that Diddy has an intention to “anonymously publish information that he thinks will help his defense in this case,” concluding that his “goal is to blackmail victims and witnesses either into silence or providing testimony helpful to his defense.” The Rapper Is Still ‘Powerful’ Despite Being In Jail MEGA An insider recently told People Magazine that Diddy is very “powerful” despite his arrest, noting that “everyone was afraid to cross him. Even though he’s behind bars now, he’s still so powerful. We all knew it even back then.” In the wake of Diddy’s arrest, several revelations emerged, many highlighting the Bad Boy mogul’s obsession with exerting control over his associates and alleged victims. The source now claims that at the height of Diddy’s influence, those around him believed his need for control stemmed from his intelligence. The insider added, “Everyone always chalked it up to being a creative genius when it came to his obsession with controlling things.” Diddy’s ‘Freak Offs’ Allegedly Had Minors MEGA Diddy was arrested in September outside of a luxurious hotel in Manhattan following a grand jury indictment. He faces charges of **** trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution and has been denied bail several times since his incarceration. The rapper is said to have organized *****-fuelled *******, infamously known as “freak offs,” where he and some of his guests allegedly assaulted people, including some who were minors at the time. One woman, identified as Tanea Wallace, recently opened up about her experience of what transpired when she attended what she believed to be a “freak off” party. Wallace said she saw several people who appeared to be intoxicated on drugs or alcohol, having **** for a long ******* of time, and that several minors were there also but surrounded by adults, per TMZ. The Rapper’s Lawyers Denied Tanea Wallace’s Claims MEGA Diddy’s attorneys have since denied Wallace’s claims, saying she has no “credibility” and that her claims are “false.” “Ms. Tanea Wallace has no credibility and her claims about ‘freak offs’ and minors are completely and categorically false,” they told the news outlet. “As we’ve said before, Mr. Combs cannot respond to every new publicity stunt, even in response to claims that are facially ridiculous. Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process. In court, the truth will prevail: that the accusations against Mr. Combs are pure fiction.” He has since denied any wrongdoing related to his alleged **** ******* and pleaded not guilty. “Mr. Combs is a fighter … he’s not afraid of the charges,” his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, said in a press conference in September. “He’s been looking forward to this day; he’s been looking forward to clearing his name. He didn’t do these things.” Source link #Diddy #Accused #Corruptly #Influencing #Witnesses #Jurors #Jail Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Homeless people in Wales at record level Homeless people in Wales at record level BBC Charmaine Denton is one of 6,447 people living in temporary accommodation in Wales Charmaine Denton has been waiting more than two years for a permanent home and she is far from the only one. The 38-year-old is “scratching at the door” to move after three years in supported housing, which she said had affected her mental health and left her feeling like her life was on hold. Homelessness is at a record level in Wales and the number using temporary accommodation, such as B&Bs, has risen by 18% to 6,447 in 2023-24. Charmaine, from Carmarthenshire, said: “I was hoping to put up my own Christmas tree this year. I just want somewhere to call home – that’s what everyone deserves, isn’t it?” She moved into care when she was three and had a chaotic childhood. By 14 she was living in temporary accommodation and had her first flat two years later. “I wasn’t ready to be self-reliant and run my own property. I don’t think many 16-year-olds are,” she said. She takes full responsibility for her actions but said a lack of support and a life of chaos led to her taking ******* and ****** ********. “You don’t recognise you’re going to be really heavily into drugs when you’re 16, you just think it’s one big party.” She lost her flat, went to prison, slept on the streets and lived in temporary accommodation. “It was hard trying to stay clean there. I’m not blaming anyone, but there’s only so much you can keep away from it when people are fighting in the hallway and they’re up at three in the morning, knocking your door flat out.” Now Charmaine lives in a shared recovery-focused house run by homeless charity, The Wallich. Hers is one of nine rooms with a bathroom and kitchenette and she is proud to have changed her life and wants to give something back. “My past made me stronger, I don’t look at it as bad – I look at it as experience. I’m hoping I can turn it round into a positive,” she added. She wants to continue voluntary work but cannot until she finds a permanent home. This year will be her fourth Christmas in temporary accommodation. Jamie-Lee Cole from The Wallich said Charmaine’s situation was an example of the bottleneck in temporary accommodation where there was a “swelling” of people needing it but with nowhere to move them on to. She said as well as the effect on Charmaine’s mental health, for some there was a risk of relapse or reoffending. Newport, the fastest-growing city in Wales, has the highest homeless rate in the country – it has risen by more than 50% over the past year to a record 1,359 households. In September 2024, 594 households lived in temporary accommodation at a cost of £6.5m to the city’s council, up £1.4m on the previous year. Housing advice and prevention officer for Newport City Council, Hannah Berry, said that each day is different at the housing options drop in service Thursday mornings are busy at the housing drop-in service at Newport Central Library. Housing advice and prevention officer Hannah Berry said: “People can be very ******, upset, frustrated… they just want a home.” She said the hardest part of the job was turning people away and “we do our very best to help everybody, but we’re restricted by budget, lack of housing, lack of provision and lack of other services”. As a mother herself, she said it was particularly difficult to see families with children “facing the toughest thing in their lives”. Kath Howells, service manager for housing at Newport council, said it was the most challenging time in the 20 years she has worked in the sector Kath Howells from Newport council said Wales was feeling the brunt of the housing crisis, with private rented homes too expensive for most people and a lack of other options. She said high demand and a very low turnover of housing association stock meant they could not “move people into the homes they need and deserve”. She encouraged people at risk of losing their home to speak to the council as quickly as possible. Steffan Evans from The Bevan Foundation said the percentage of social homes as the total of the housing stock had almost halved in 40 years. “We know that the Welsh government has got its 20,000 affordable homes target… but that target can’t be the end, we need to go further than that,” he said. The Welsh government said tackling homelessness was a priority and it had “allocated record levels of funding” since 2021 – £1.4bn – and was investing nearly £220m in homelessness prevention and housing support this year. A spokesman added: “The increase in people being supported with temporary accommodation reflects the ongoing pressures within the system and the effects of the cost-of-living crisis on individuals and households.” Source link #Homeless #people #Wales #record #level Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Keir Starmer to meet ******** President Xi Jinping at G20 summit Keir Starmer to meet ******** President Xi Jinping at G20 summit Reuters Sir Keir Starmer is due to meet with President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit this week, with the government saying it wants “stable and pragmatic engagement” with China. The prime minister will say it is right to engage with China on “areas of mutual cooperation” such as international stability, climate change and economic growth. But Downing Street said he would also “be firm on the need to have honest conversations on areas of disagreement”, and that engagement would be “rooted at all times in the ***’s national interests”. Speaking to reporters on his way to the meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Sir Keir said “shoring up support for Ukraine” was top of his agenda. The meeting between Sir Keir and Xi will be the first time a *** prime minister has met the ******** president in person since 2018. Downing Street said the two were expected to meet on Monday. The pair spoke over the phone in August, after Labour’s election victory the previous month, but they have not yet met in person. China’s military support for Russia’s war in Ukraine has prompted criticism from the *** and other Western countries. The prime minister said: “It is in the ***’s best interests to engage on the global stage – whether that’s building strong and fruitful partnerships with our closest allies or being frank with those whose values differ from our own. “Close cooperation with the world’s leading economies is vital to secure investment into the ***, and create the jobs needed to catalyse growth.” Foreign Secretary David Lammy held talks with his ******** counterpart Wang Yi, as well as Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, in Beijing last month. Calls for Archbishop of York to step down following Justin Welby scandal Calls for Archbishop of York to step down following Justin Welby scandal The Archbishop of York is under pressure to step down over his handling of child ****** cases in the ******* of England. The Most Rev Stephen Cottrell faced calls to resign on Sunday from a survivor who said he is perpetuating a ******* “cover-up” and a former ****** inquiry leader whose investigation was prematurely disbanded by the archbishops last year. Rev Matthew Ineson, 56, a retired vicar who was abused at 16 by a Bradford priest, said the Archbishop of York ******* to hold clergy accountable for mishandling his case. He said: “Until there is a complete clean sweep at the top, nothing is going to change.” The demands follow the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, last week, who was forced to quit over his ******** to act on concerns over child ****** committed by evangelical ********** John Smyth. Matthew Ineson, abused at 16 by Bradford priest, has complained of the Archbishop of York’s ‘failings’ – Jay Williams Rev Ineson, who has waived his anonymity, was ****** as a child in the 1980s by Rev Trevor Devamanikkam. His abuser ***** by ******** in 2017 before facing court on six ******* offence charges, but an independent ******* report later confirmed the ****** occurred. This review also criticised senior clergy, including Lord Sentamu, the former Archbishop of York, for failing to contact the police when Rev Ineson disclosed his ****** to them in 2013. Rev Ineson stated that in 2021, the Most Rev Stephen Cottrell visited him at his home and apologised on behalf of the ******* for the ****** he endured and the actions of senior clergy. He said the Archbishop of York had called his predecessor Lord Sentamu “out of order” and said he “fully supported” the Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley’s decision to suspend him. Last week, Bishop Hartley, the only bishop to have called for the archbishop’s resignation, shared a letter on X from both archbishops which expressed a ******* for Lord Sentamu to “resume his ministry”. Rev Ineson said: “He supported Bishop Helen-Ann in suspending Sentamu, and now he writes a letter going, we want to bring Sentamu back into the fold in that really coercive and bullying letter to her… They are just covering up for each other all the time.” The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, who stepped down last week – Richard Heathcote/Getty Dame Jasvinder Sanghera also backed survivors’ calls for the second most powerful figure in the ******* of England to resign. She accused Archbishop Cottrell of “ignoring” 11 separate safeguarding complaints, some involving leading figures in the *******, including bishops. Dame Jasvinder was one of three chairmen on an independent safeguarding board (ISB) inquiry into ******* ******. The archbishops disbanded the inquiry last year, leaving victims suicidal, with four requiring emergency mental health care. Channel 4 News Dame Jasvinder said the archbishops’ decision had a “devastating” impact on survivors: “They could have prevented that harm, and they didn’t.” She claimed the ******* has ******* to advance the outstanding cases, despite her warning to archbishops some victims might not survive the delay. “In one email, I said my concern is that some of them might not be alive this time next year because of the suicidal ideation that they were sharing,” she said, adding that, “From my perspective, when you are in such a leadership position, like him, he is complicit in the experiences of further causing harm to victims and survivors.” Evangelical ********** John Smyth, who committed ‘appalling’ ****** It comes as the Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Rev Rachel Treweek, said on Sunday anyone thinking of replacing Justin Welby needs “their head reading”. Bishop Treweek told the BBC that she did not want the “very, very difficult job” and any bishop thinking about it should “look long and hard into the mirror and take some reality checks”. A spokesman for the Archbishop of York denied that he had “ignored” any victims. They said he has always taken ******* safeguarding “very seriously” and believed it requires independent structures and scrutiny, while remaining everyone’s responsibility. The spokesman added: “The archbishop deeply regrets the impact on victims following the disbandment of the ISB, which was a decision taken collectively by the Archbishops’ Council. This was due to a breakdown in relations with independent members.” The spokesman said an independent commissioner was looking into the ISB cases. They added that the letter about reinstating Lord Sentamu reflected conversations that have taken place with the Bishop of Newcastle since his suspension and is “not about minimising the impact of anything Lord Sentamu previously said”. A Lambeth Palace spokesman supported and echoed the Archbishop of York’s statement. Lord Sentamu has been approached for comment. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Family searches for Hannah Kobayashi, who disappeared after missing connecting flight at LAX Family searches for Hannah Kobayashi, who disappeared after missing connecting flight at LAX LOS ANGELES − A Hawaii woman who missed a connecting flight in Los Angeles is missing after she was seen on camera at the airport and a major shopping center, according to her family and police. Hannah Kobayashi, 31, was last heard from Nov. 11, her family says, after she had missed a connecting flight from Maui to New York City at Los Angeles International Airport days earlier on Nov. 8. Kobayashi is described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds and has brown hair and eyes, and fair skin with freckles. The family filed a missing person’s report with the Los Angeles Police Department on Nov. 12. Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi’s aunt, told USA TODAY on Sunday that the family received text messages from Kobayashi that were out of character just before her disappearance. “On (Nov. 11), we started getting texts saying that she didn’t feel safe, that someone was trying to steal her funds, that someone was trying to take her identity,” Pidgeon said. “Weird things, calling us *****, things that weren’t quite the normal way that she speaks.” USA TODAY has reached out to LAPD for more information. Kobayashi disappearance timeline The family has obtained security footage showing Kobayashi leaving the airport on Nov. 8 wearing a ****** hooded sweatshirt, tie-dye leggings and a dark green backpack. Pidgeon said Kobayashi had been seen twice at The Grove shopping center, approximately 10 miles northeast of LAX. She was seen once around noon by employees at the shopping center’s Taschen book store on Nov. 9 and was seen on video at a Nike event around 3:40 p.m. on Nov. 10. A photo from the two-day Nike and LeBron James event was posted to her Instagram the same day. Kobayashi returned to LAX on Nov. 11 but did not board a flight, according to the family, citing airport staffers. Kobayashi’s phone, which has an Audrey Hepburn case, last pinged at LAX on Nov. 11 but has not been found. Search focusing on train near airport Kobayashi’s family has arrived in Los Angeles to search for her. Pidgeon said the search has focused on the area near LAX, a bus line as well as the C and K-Line trains of the Los Angeles Metro. Nvidia’s data center Blackwell GPUs reportedly overheat, require rack redesigns and cause delays for customers Nvidia’s data center Blackwell GPUs reportedly overheat, require rack redesigns and cause delays for customers Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell processors are facing significant challenges with overheating when installed in high-capacity server racks, reports The Information. These issues have reportedly led to design changes and delays and raised concerns among customers like Google, Meta, and Microsoft about whether they can deploy Blackwell servers on time. According to insiders familiar with the situation who spoke with The Information, Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs for AI and HPC overheat when used in servers with 72 processors inside. These machines are expected to consume up to 120kW per rack. These problems have caused Nvidia to reevaluate the design of its server racks multiple times, as overheating limits GPU performance and risks damaging components. Customers reportedly worry that these setbacks may hinder their timeline for deploying new processors in their data centers. Nvidia has reportedly instructed its suppliers to make several design changes to the racks to counteract overheating issues. The company has worked closely with its suppliers and partners to develop engineering revisions to improve server cooling. While these adjustments are standard for such large-scale tech releases, they have nonetheless added to the delay, further pushing back expected shipping dates. In response to the delays and overheating issues, an Nvidia spokesperson reminded Reuters about the collaborative efforts with cloud providers and described the design changes as part of the normal development process. This partnership with cloud providers and suppliers aims to ensure the final product meets performance and reliability expectations as Nvidia continues to work on resolving these technical challenges. Previously, Nvidia had to delay the Blackwell production ramp due to the processor’s yield-******** design flaw. Nvidia’s Blackwell B100 and B200 GPUs use TSMC’s CoWoS-L packaging technology to connect their two chiplets. This design includes an RDL interposer with local silicon interconnect (LSI) bridges, which supports data transfer speeds of up to 10 TB/s. The precise positioning of these LSI bridges is essential for the technology to function as intended. However, a mismatch in the thermal expansion characteristics of the GPU chiplets, LSI bridges, RDL interposer, and the motherboard substrate led to warping and system failures. To address this, Nvidia reportedly modified the GPU silicon’s top metal layers and bump structures to improve production reliability. Although Nvidia never revealed specific details about these changes, it noted that new masks were necessary as part of the fix. As a result, the final revision of Blackwell GPUs only entered mass production in late October, which means that Nvidia will be able to ship these processors starting in late January. Nvidia’s clients, including tech giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, use Nvidia’s GPUs to train their most powerful large language models. Delays in Blackwell AI GPUs naturally affect Nvidia customers’ plans and products. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Russia resells more gas in Europe after cutting off Austria, sources, data show Russia resells more gas in Europe after cutting off Austria, sources, data show By Jason Hovet, Thomas Escritt and Dmitry Zhdannikov BERLIN/PRAGUE/LONDON (Reuters) -Russian gas flows to Austria were suspended for a second day on Sunday because of a pricing dispute, but other buyers in Europe stepped in to snap up unsold volumes, companies and sources said and data showed. Russia, which before the Ukraine war was the biggest single supplier of gas to Europe, has lost most of its buyers on the continent as the EU tries to cut its dependence on Russian energy. Russian gas is still being sold in significant volumes to Slovakia and Hungary, as well as to the Czech Republic which does not have a direct contract. Smaller volumes are going to Italy and Serbia. Gazprom on Saturday halted supplies to OMV after the Austrian company threatened to impound some of the Russian state firm’s gas as compensation for an arbitration it had won over a contractual dispute. Flows to Austria were still suspended on Sunday but the overall daily supply to Europe via Ukraine – the main transit route for Russian gas to the EU – would remain at 42.4 million cubic metres per day, Gazprom confirmed, around the same volume as usual. It did not comment further. Austria had been receiving 17 mcm per day before the cut-off, and those volumes are now finding new buyers in Europe. Slovak state-owned firm SPP said it was still receiving gas from Russia and suggested others were buying more because there was still “great interest” in Russian gas in Europe. A source familiar with Russian gas supplies in Europe said gas was still cheaper from Russia than from many other sources, so Austrian volumes had quickly been resold. He declined to name the companies which bought gas previously destined for Austria. Austria has said it has plentiful gas stocks to cover the shortfall and can import from Germany and Italy when needed. LAST DAYS The ********* gas market has been sensitive to geopolitical developments and supply issues, with the end of Ukraine gas transit expected at the end of the year. Colder temperatures in Europe have also been driving up heating demand, leading to withdrawals from EU gas storage sites earlier than last year. “Supply and weather drivers have created concerns about end-of-winter gas stocks which, given the EU’s storage targets, might imply a need to buy significant (liquefied natural gas) volumes in the summer,” BNP Paribas senior commodities strategist Aldo Spanjer said. The front-month gas price at the Dutch TTF hub, the ********* benchmark price, closed at 45.72 euros per megawatt hour on Friday, its highest in nearly a year. Story Continues At its peak Russia was supplying 35% of Europe’s gas, but since the Ukraine war started in 2022 Gazprom has lost market share to Norway, the U.S. and Qatar. The company’s remaining flows to Europe are not expected to continue for much longer, with the *******-era pipeline via Ukraine due to shut at the end of this year as Kyiv does not want to extend a transit agreement. The Yamal-Europe pipeline via Belarus has already closed after a dispute, while Russia blamed the U.S. and Britain for explosions under the Baltic Sea that closed the Nord Stream route. Washington and London have denied they blew up the pipelines. The Wall Street Journal has reported Ukrainian officials were behind the *******. Kyiv has denied that. If Ukraine closes the gas transit route, significant Russian supplies will mainly go to Slovakia and Hungary, which gets most of its volumes via a pipeline running mostly through Turkey. Find the Plough and trace a line down from the two stars on the right until you find Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation of Leo. The meteors will appear to radiate from the head of the lion, just above Regulus. You will need to stay away from city lights and give yourself a good 20 minutes to let your eyes adjust to the darkness. Finally, wrap up warmly. Newtownards arson ******* possibly linked to loyalist feud Newtownards arson ******* possibly linked to loyalist feud An arson ******* that caused extensive damage to a house in County Down could be linked to an ongoing loyalist feud, police have said. The ******* happened shortly before 00:40 GMT on Sunday at a vacant property in Weaver’s Grange, Newtownards. An accelerant had been poured over the door and through the letterbox. The ***** caused significant damage to the front door and smoke damage throughout the house. Det Insp Ryan said it was a “completely reckless” ******* which could have had serious consequences for those in the neighbouring property. “Thankfully, our ***** service colleagues were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to them,” the officer said. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said it was following a number of lines of enquiry and has appealed for information. It is understood the same house was targeted in an arson ******* last November. Police have been investigating a series of incidents they believe are linked to feud between rival drugs gangs previously associated with the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). There were attacks in Bangor, Newtownards, Donaghadee and Ballywalter last year. Alliance councillor Vicky Moore said the perpetrators had “nothing to offer” the community. “There have been a number of arson attacks and other incidents,” she said. “It’s very disrupting for the families and the other people that live here.” In addition to the arson attacks, Ms Moore said there had also been incidents of “sectarian graffiti” in the area. Audi A5 gains a sedan variant, but only for China Audi A5 gains a sedan variant, but only for China Although the new Audi A5 five-door liftback is being cheekily marketed as a “sedan” in many parts of the world, there’s now a true sedan in A5 range, but it’s unlikely to be sold outside of China. In July Audi launched the third-generation A5. As part of the brand’s model name realignment, the new combustion-engined A5 range replaces outgoing A4, with even-numbered names now reserved for electric vehicles. 100s of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert At its July launch, the new A5 was revealed as in both wagon and five-door liftback variants, with the latter replacing both the existing A4 sedan and A5 Sportback lift-back. The new A5 L unveiled at the 2024 Guangzhou motor show at the end of last week follows the path trod by the larger A7 L. It not only adds some inches to the wheelbase to improve rear seat space, but also converts the five-door liftback rear end into a true booted sedan. Foreign brands often develop exclusive long wheelbase variants for the China market where rear-seat comfort is a priority. ******** buyers overwhelmingly prefer sedans compared to other non-crossover body styles. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Measuring 4902mm long, and riding on a 2965mm wheelbase, the A5 L sedan is 73mm longer overall than the A5 liftback. The A5 L has longer rear doors to accommodate the car’s 65mm longer wheelbase. Unfortunately Audi hasn’t released any official photos of the A5 L’s interior, so we don’t know what the inside of the boot looks like, but it’s probably safe to assume the cabin is carried straight over from the standard wheelbase models. The new A5 L will be built in China as part of Audi’s ****** venture with FAW. Like the short wheelbase A5, the A5 L is built on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which is an evolution of the longitudinal front- and all-wheel drive MLB architecture. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpertCamera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The A5 L isn’t the only new China-exclusive long wheelbase variant on display at Audi’s stand at the Guangzhou motor show. There’s also the Q6 L E-Tron, a roomier version of the all-electric crossover which shares its Premium Platform Electric underpinnings with the second-generation Porsche Macan. There are long wheelbase versions for both the more upright and practical crossover, as well as the swoopier Sportback “coupe” body. Unlike the A5 L, neither the Q6 L E-Tron crossover nor the Sportback feature a distinctive styling changes beyond longer rear doors and extended roof line. Explorers of Lost City of the Monkey **** Nearly Lose Faces to Parasite Explorers of Lost City of the Monkey **** Nearly Lose Faces to Parasite The group of explorers that discovered the ******** of an ancient city in the jungle of Honduras while hunting for the legendary lost city of La Ciudad Blanca (‘White City’), otherwise known as City of the Monkey ****, almost lost their faces to a flesh-eating parasite. Inhabitants of the ancient city had abandoned it in the 16th century after believing gods had cursed their city with ********. Legends of a Lost City La Ciudad Blanca is a legendary city that was said to be located in the ******* rainforest of Mosquitia in eastern Honduras. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés reported hearing “trustworthy” information about the ancient ruins, but never located them. In 1927, pilot Charles Lindbergh reported seeing monuments constructed from white stone while flying over eastern Honduras. By the 1930s, there were rumors of a place in Honduras called the “City of the Monkey ****”, which was equated with Ciudad Blanca, and in 1939 adventurer Theodore Morde claimed to have found it and brought thousands of artifacts back to the ******* States to prove it. Originally published in The ********* Weekly, September 22, 1940 (Public Domain) Explorers Become Latest Victims of the ‘Wrath of the Monkey ****’ Despite the creepy legends that the area is “cursed,” ********* author Douglas Preston and a group of explorers, were not intimidated by the rumors. The group, consisted of ********* and Honduran explorers and archeologists, launched their adventure, combing the rainforests of Honduras and Nicaragua in search of the lost city. During the process, they had to deal with poisonous snakes and crawl through thick foliage to find it, but shortly discovering the ruins in 2015, they contracted an extremely dangerous, life-threatening ********: leishmaniasis. Preston described the horrific symptoms of leishmaniasis with graphic details as National Post reports, “The parasite migrates to the mucous membranes of your mouth and your nose and basically eats them away. Your nose falls off, your lips fall off, and eventually your face becomes a gigantic, open sore.” But despite falling ill, Preston said he still doesn’t believe in curses and doesn’t regret the experience, “I would never trade that experience for anything. It was so powerful,” he told CBS News. More Secrets “Hide” Within the White City’s Ruins According to Preston Within the city’s ruins, the group of the adventurous and brave explorers found a lot of artifacts – dating back to 1000 and 1500 AD – carved from stone and clay, including trays and a throne. Preston appears to be quite confident that there are more secrets hiding within the White City’s ruins, but after almost losing his face and life, he’s not in a hurry to go back and continue the excavation, “It’s just too dangerous,” he said after his doctors informed him that if untreated, parts of his face would “fall off,” becoming an open sore. Additionally, during the following few months, more than half of the group’s explores started displaying early symptoms of the ******** as well and had to undergo grueling treatment, as CBS reports. Republicans suddenly think the economy’s great and the election wasn’t rigged Republicans suddenly think the economy’s great and the election wasn’t rigged The vibes have officially shifted. The economy Donald Trump said was broken? All it took was him winning, and consumer sentiment among Republicans soared. Elections? Suddenly Republicans are on board with the reality that they’re secure. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he saw no evidence of ****** in the 2024 campaign. And the media landscape? Viewership of Fox News has surged since Trump’s win despite his harsh criticism of the network in the run up to Nov. 5. At the same time, Democrats’ sentiment of the economy — essentially how they view its overall health — dropped by 13 percent after Trump’s win. And viewership for ******** MSNBC has seen a downturn. It’s a role reversal that, while heady for Republicans now, will quickly come with all the liabilities associated with incumbency. Republicans are ******** they’re about to see further economic improvement, lower prices and the immigration crackdown Trump promised on the campaign trail. Democrats, meanwhile, have no more status quo to defend — and, like Republicans for the past several years, will be seeking to paint a dark portrait of the opposition party. “For four years, Republicans felt as if they were living in an ‘I told you so,’ and everything that they said around Biden was a reality, whether it was his mental decline or the Biden-Harris policies for the past four years. They felt as if they were right across the board, and that the country was realizing that,” said Matthew Bartlett, a GOP strategist and appointee under Trump’s first administration. “Now Democrats are taking a very similar posture, certainly with a lot of the [Cabinet] picks coming out — saying, ‘We told you what he was going to be like.’” It’s typical for the winning party to see a surge of optimism among its ranks. But pollsters saw the mood shift coming this year for another reason, too: Exit polls showed that voters wanted major change this election — and it was Trump who was ultimately seen as the change agent, as Vice President Kamala Harris struggled to distinguish herself from the Biden administration and the policies voters blamed for their current pocketbook challenges. The economy is where these divides will be seen the most, and the gap between party sentiments is expected to widen further in the months ahead. It’s a trend that began in the final months before election day, when *********** voters were already expressing rosier outlooks as they anticipated a Trump victory, said Micah Roberts, a partner at Public Opinion Strategies who oversaw the economic questions in the bipartisan NBC and CNBC surveys. “We’re going to see Republicans skyrocket to probably the most positive they’ve ever been about the future in the current state of the economy, and Democrats will kind of fall back down to some, much less rosy place,” Roberts said. “Especially when you have this trifecta win, attitudes about the economy are really viewed strongly through a partisan prism.” The risk for Republicans is that the honeymoon ******* won’t last forever. With Trump in the White House and GOP control of the House and the Senate, Americans will be looking for a place to cast the blame if they don’t see the improvements they’re craving. “The best thing Democrats have going for them is that they’re running against Republicans. And the best thing Republicans have going for them is that they’re running against Democrats,” Roberts said. “Once you’re in charge, you can’t control everything, and even the things that you can control, parties in power tend to overstep.” That divide exists even within the *********** Party. Anti-Trump Republicans, who either voted for Harris or sat out the election altogether, are grappling with whether the more traditionalist, Ronald Reagan strain of the party is even worth fighting for anymore, and many of them have lost an appetite for the resistance-style efforts they launched during Trump’s first presidency. “I think that people who have been opposing Trumpism have viewed this very existentially — not from a policy perspective, but from a character perspective, from the hope that we are a better people than this,” said Mike Madrid, a co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project and a longtime GOP strategist. “At a certain point, you can compel people to speak to their better angels, but if they don’t want to, you’re never going to win that ******. We are not a better people. This is who we are.” On the Democratic side, members have been so despondent about a second Trump victory — and, in particular, Trump’s resounding win of the popular vote — that the public reaction has been just a sliver of what it was to after his first win in 2016: no massive protests in major ******** cities or on college campuses and no major corporate denunciations of Trump. And they’re feeling even less hopeful than they were eight years ago about the future of the country. “Because now it’s very clear who he is. Like, ‘We don’t care that he’s a felon and we don’t care that he’s a *******. We don’t care that he’s corrupt.’ Whereas before, the jury was a bit out, and now we know. And people are saying — like, literally by voting — they’re saying, ‘Yeah, those things don’t matter to me,’” said Vanessa Wruble, co-founder of the 2017 Women’s March. “This time around, there’s a kind of bewilderment. But if we’re feeling bewildered, what it says is there’s something essential we’re missing.” Some Democrats remain hopeful that their party will rebuild — and argue that the lack of a public backlash in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s election isn’t a bad thing as people process the results of the election. Indivisible, which sprung up in the wake of the 2016 election, released a 30-page guide focused on channeling despondency into action during a call this week that was attended by 40,000 people, and it has already signed up 8,000 people to facilitate community organizing meetings across the country. “They’re pulling back from stuff that reminds them of 2017 to a certain extent, but they’re very much looking forward to pathways forward,” said Leah Greenberg, one of the group’s co-founders. “People are very sad. They’re very very sad at what has happened, but they also understood that this was a possibility in a way that nothing prepared people for in 2016. And they understand that we did not have a perfect democracy on Monday, and we did not have a perfect democracy on Wednesday. They understand this is a longer term ******.” Indivisible, MoveOn, the Working Families Party and other progressive groups also hosted a post-election organizing call that was attended by more than 100,000 people. Swing Left, another organization that was birthed after Trump’s 2016 election, is hosting a grassroots organizing call next week to map out its road ahead. And Women’s March, under new leadership, is planning marches in Washington and across the country for Jan. 18, two days before the inauguration, with about 75,000 people already signed up to attend. “After a global pandemic, multiple election cycles, and the disastrous Dobbs decision, we are in a completely new era of ********* politics. Trying to equate the response to Trump’s win in 2016 versus now is an apples-to-oranges comparison,” said Rachel O’Leary Carmona, the executive director of Women’s March. “Women’s March is one of many large organizations convening a People’s March in January to demonstrate our power and continue to build a broad popular front of resistance.” But Wruble, who left the organization amid infighting, won’t be there. Reached Thursday evening, she was sitting with multiple parrots, hairless guinea pigs and a zebra at the animal and art sanctuary she founded. She’s sitting things out after years of divisions among progressive organizations that she said distracted from “prioritizing the real threat.” “Maybe my story is an example of something that went wrong,” Wruble said. Lee Carsley: Mission accomplished as England foundations ***** for Thomas Tuchel Lee Carsley: Mission accomplished as England foundations ***** for Thomas Tuchel The game was changed in the 53rd minute by a flash of genius from Harry Kane, back after being left out in favour of Ollie Watkins for the 3-0 win in Athens and facing some potentially unflattering reviews after another sluggish first-half performance. England’s 31-year-old captain looked heavy-legged and off the pace in a dreadful first half from both sides, but showed the enduring quality that makes him invaluable when he showed stunning vision and range of passing from the left-hand touchline to pick out Jude Bellingham in the area with a perfect right-foot delivery. Bellingham was floored by Ireland defender Liam Scales, who received a second yellow card. Kane scored his 69th goal for his country from the spot and it was game over. Kane has been a central figure to Carsley’s reign in charge, not least with his public and uncharacteristically outspoken slap-down of those England players who withdrew from the squad for these two internationals. He then doubled down on his message as he insisted it endangered the culture former manager Gareth Southgate had built up during his eights years in charge, when it became a pleasure to play for the country again. Kane was speaking as England’s skipper, senior figure and statesman, but it did not stop Carsley showing his own decision-making strength, choosing Watkins ahead of the country’s record goalscorer in Athens. It was a pick well rewarded with an early goal from Aston Villa’s striker that turned a potentially hazardous task into an easy one. Kane is still England’s first choice, but Carsley’s willingness to use Watkins, and the success of the move, proved he does not have to be the only choice. Tuchel will feel the benefit of Carsley’s temporary spell because of his determination to introduce youth, further opening the pathway from under-21s to senior level, and all helped by his insider knowledge of the talent coming through the England system. Carsley used 32 players overall, giving a debut to eight – Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Lewis Hall, Harwood-Bellis, Curtis Jones, Tino Livramento, Noni Madueke and Morgan Rogers. They can all reflect on their contributions with satisfaction, especially Liverpool midfielder Jones, who has looked a class act in his two starts, while Chelsea forward Madueke has looked a constant threat. Gomes made an impression as a midfield option, Gibbs-White showed he can be a creator while there is a big opportunity for Newcastle’s Hall at left-back, where Tuchel’s options look short. The 19-year-old pair Rico Lewis and Kobbie Mainoo, from Manchester City and Manchester ******* respectively, also added to their England experiences, which will be in the positive ledge of Carsley’s handover.
