  1. Five-goal England power to Nations League promotion Five-goal England power to Nations League promotion Temporary head coach Lee Carsley has signed off in style as England capitalised on Liam Scales’ sending off in a 5-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland that sealed promotion back to the Nations League top tier. The 17th and final fixture of a year that saw the national team reach another ********* Championship final marked the end of the Under-21s coach’s six-game stint as Gareth Southgate’s stand-in. Thomas Tuchel begins his quest to win the 2026 World Cup in the new year and takes over on the back of Nations League elevation after Carsley oversaw a comfortable win against the country he represented as a player. Carsley said: “I wanted the England team to be exciting to watch, be attacking. I see them day in, day out on the training ground and now people have seen it. “It’s given the staff and myself the confidence we can do the job. You always doubt yourself, whether you could do it or not. “There’s a lot of England managers sat in the house picking the team and to have the responsibility to do that and the trust from my bosses has been a massive boost of confidence.” Heimir Hallgrimsson’s Ireland had started well and frustrated England in the first half, only to spiral after Scales received his second yellow card for bringing down Jude Bellingham in the penalty area shortly after half-time. Captain Harry Kane, back in the starting line-up, struck home the resulting penalty, with Anthony Gordon then lashing in and Conor Gallagher scoring from close range just as Group B2 rivals Greece took the lead in Finland. Substitute Jarrod Bowen netted with his first touch and fellow introduction Taylor Harwood-Bellis completed a dream debut by heading in to wrap up a win that saw Carsley’s men top the pool. Greece, who went on to beat Finland 2-0, finished level on 15 points but England’s 3-0 win in Athens on Thursday meant they boasted a superior head-to-head record. Kane, who described Carsley as “top drawer”, said: “Two tough games, we got the job done away in Greece and we had to finish it here today. It was a tough first half and we came out in the second half with a lot more energy and finished it off.” Source link #Fivegoal #England #power #Nations #League #promotion Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Half-Life 2 Hits an All-Time High During 20th Anniversary Celebrations Half-Life 2 Hits an All-Time High During 20th Anniversary Celebrations Half-Life 2 has secured a new player count record on Steam, with more users flocking to the game than ever before – or since records began, at least. On November 17, the iconic Valve-backed game hit 64,085 concurrent players, four times as many players as the previous all-time high. It helps that Valve pushed the game onto Steam with a 100% discount, of course. The game was also updated with some new features and added content, which further stoked the engine (no pun intended). Half-Life Comes Back to Life In 2021, a limited-time community event boosted Half-Life 2’s player count to around 16,000 concurrent users, but this free-to-own weekend combined with the 20th-anniversary celebrations decimated that record. To pay tribute to this legendary title on its 20th birthday, Valve added a sizeable developer commentary track to the game, equalling some three and a half hours. It doesn’t end there, though – Valve went above and beyond to flesh out Half-Life 2 with this update. Not only was the game made free-to-own, but Valve linked both episodes of Half-Life 2, introduced the ‘Lost Coast’ demo into the launcher and brought the Steam Workshop up to spec to support the game’s modding scene. The team also released an exclusive video showcasing almost 20 minutes of early footage from Half-Life 2’s development at Valve. The demo was pieced together in 2000, almost two years after the first game hit the market, and it was a world away from the finished product that would be released years later. Have you jumped back into Half-Life 2 to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary? Let us know in the comments. 3. Paedophile who ********* assaulted stepdaughter allowed to stay in *** under ECHR rules Paedophile who ********* assaulted stepdaughter allowed to stay in *** under ECHR rules A paedophile convicted of ********* assaulting his stepdaughter has been allowed to remain in the *** as deporting him would breach his right to a “family life”. The man, who is in his early 50s and is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was jailed for three years in 2020 for “appalling” offences including ******* ************ and ******* ******** against his stepdaughter and two other young ****** in the family. Because of the severity of his offences, he was ordered to be deported back to his ******** homeland. However, he successfully appealed against the sanction, with an immigration judge ruling deportation would “negatively impact” the “wellbeing” of his wife and three biological children, whom the ******* offences were not committed against. The decision was made despite the tribunal accepting that the man “continues to pose a risk to the community, in particular children”. It would mean he would rejoin the household, including the stepdaughter he was convicted of assaulting. In a ruling published last month, the Home Office won the right to a new hearing in which it will seek to deport the man, who lives in the Glasgow area, and is referred to in legal papers only as MD. He cannot be named to protect the identity of the children. Liam Kerr, justice spokesman for the Scottish Tories, said: “The public will be appalled that this dangerous ********* can remain in Scotland. Common sense should mean that public safety is always prioritised rather than offenders.” Asylum claim MD arrived in the *** in 2008 and claimed asylum. The asylum bid was rejected, but he was granted leave to remain in Britain in 2014 as by that point he had married and fathered a child, and it was ruled deportation would breach his right to “family life”. He had two further children, born in 2016 and 2018. A deportation order was issued in 2022, following his conviction for ******* offences against his stepdaughter and two of her cousins. Sentencing him to three years in jail for a “particularly serious and appalling ******”, the judge said the evidence indicated MD had committed the attacks for his “own ******* gratification”. The judge said he had “no regard” for his young victims, who faced the potential of a “lifelong legacy of psychological harm”. However, the deportation order was quashed after MD appealed, winning on the grounds that it would have been unlawful under the Human Rights Act 1998, which incorporated the ********* Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) into *** law. The case is likely to add weight to calls for Britain to leave the ECHR, due to claims that it leaves ministers powerless to deport ******* asylum seekers and dangerous **********. The judge ruled that should MD be removed from the ***, his wife would lose “all emotional support” the paedophile was able to provide to her, which would “negatively impact” their children’s wellbeing. MD continues to deny the ******* he was convicted of and his wife believes he is innocent. She had been struggling particularly to care for their youngest child, who has a diagnosis of autism, with this “tipping the balance” in his favour, according to the judge who presided over his appeal against deportation. The Home Secretary won an appeal against the ruling, in part because the interests of the stepdaughter had not been considered in an independent social work report that was crucial to allowing the original appeal. It was also found that the potential risk MD might pose to his own children had not been taken into account. A new hearing is expected to take place this month. The Home Office has been approached for comment. Source link #Paedophile #********* #assaulted #stepdaughter #allowed #stay #ECHR #rules Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  4. Trump defense secretary pick Pete Hegseth denies ******* ******** allegation, acknowledges payment to accuser Trump defense secretary pick Pete Hegseth denies ******* ******** allegation, acknowledges payment to accuser Host Pete Hegseth during “FOX & Friends” at Fox News Channel Studios on May 27, 2022 in New York City. Roy Rochlin | Getty Images Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of ******* ********. “In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement. He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was ******* ********. Parlatore’s statement comes after The Washington Post on Saturday reported that a friend of Hegseth’s accuser sent a memo to the Trump transition team detailing the allegations. NBC News has not independently reviewed the memo, but Parlatore confirmed that it is related to an encounter Hegseth and the unnamed woman had in Monterey, California, during a conference of the California Federation of *********** Women. The Post reported that the memo said the woman was at the conference with her husband and her children and “didn’t remember anything until she was in Hegseth’s hotel room and then stumbling to find her hotel room” on the night in question. Parlatore denied the allegation, saying, “This is a situation where a consensual encounter occurred and, unfortunately, the woman had to come up with a lie to explain why the woman had not come back to her husband’s room that night.” “It wasn’t reported until days later until there was pressure from her husband. It was fully investigated by police and video surveillance as well as multiple eyewitness statements show that she was the aggressor,” he added. Authorities in Monterey investigated the allegation in 2017 and did not file charges against Hegseth. Parlatore also called his client “completely innocent” and accused the woman of “trying to squeeze Mr. Hegseth for money.” Before Hegseth officially becomes defense secretary, he’ll have to win over a majority of the Senate in a confirmation vote. On Sunday, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that “I think he’s a good pick.” Still, he added that the Senate would have to deliberate and review Hegseth’s record ahead of a vote. “But once again, as allegations come out, we’ll figure out if, as the Senate moves forward with the advice and consent to the president of the ******* States and doing our constitutional duties, we’ll figure out if he can get confirmed or not. And I do think that Pete’s a good pick for this position,” Mullin said. 5. Riot Games Suggests More League Shows Will Follow in Arcane’s Footsteps Riot Games Suggests More League Shows Will Follow in Arcane’s Footsteps It was recently revealed that Arcane set a record as the most expensive animated television series ever, coming in at a whopping $250 million for just two seasons. It has been a roaring success, though – and fans are lapping up the content, especially now that the League of Legends World Championship has wrapped up. Admittedly, Arcane is a masterclass in animation, and it’s picking up some seriously high praise from fans worldwide. In a recent post on Twitter, one of Riot Games’ co-founders, Marc Merrill, revealed that Riot Games isn’t done with these animated shows, despite the third season of Arcane being cancelled. We Want More In a simple post on Twitter, Marc Merrill revealed that ‘there are lots of other stories to tell’. He was responding to a question asking why there won’t be more seasons of Arcane. Mere weeks ago, Merrill was defending the budget that Riot Games blew through in the production of Arcane’s first and second seasons: We’re more than comfortable with the spend it took to deliver a show that was worthy of our players’ time. League of Legends has been running for more than a decade and ******** one of the most storied and lore-heavy games in existence. It has a thriving community backing it up, and millions of people are more than willing to soak up whatever multimedia offerings Riot Games can produce. Perhaps a budget adjustment will take place, though. With Riot Games spending $250 million to produce 18 episodes of a show, many have questioned the sustainability of the company’s coffers. If that’s trimmed up, maybe we’ll get something with more meat on the bones – who knows? Do you want to see more animated shows coming out of the League of Legends camp? Let us know in the comments. 6. Reaction to 2026 Holyrood bid ‘not pleasant’ Reaction to 2026 Holyrood bid ‘not pleasant’ The SNP Westminster leader wants to stand for the Aberdeen South and North Kincardine seat The SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said party infighting over his bid to stand at the 2026 Scottish Parliament election has been unedifying. Flynn currently represents the constituency of Aberdeen South in the House of Commons. But last week the MP announced he intends to stand for the Aberdeen South and North Kincardine seat at Holyrood, currently held by the SNP’s Audrey Nicoll. Flynn confirmed he would aim to hold his Westminster seat until the next general election, due in 2029, but would not accept two salaries. His announcement, in The Press and Journal newspaper, has caused anger within the SNP. Flynn told BBC Scotland’s The Sunday Show: “None of this is particularly edifying for anyone. “I don’t want to be doing this, I don’t want to be having these discussions on television, trying to defend myself. “But that’s the reality of politics sometimes – it’s not pleasant. “I’m not going to shy away, I’m not going to be hounded out from standing for what I believe in.” Flynn said that in politics there was always going to be a strong reaction to people seeking to do things differently. ‘Not a pleasant situation’ Asked whether Nicoll was ****** at him when he told her he wanted to challenge her for her seat, he said: “No.” “She told me she wasn’t overly surprised,” he added. He said it was “not a pleasant situation” for him or Nicoll. Flynn revealed he called her the night before he announced his plan to stand but explicitly denied asking Nicoll to stand aside for him. He said the pair had a “fairly cordial conversation” where he made clear his intentions. Flynn added that he hoped the campaign could be carried out in good ****** and in good spirit. But a source close to Nicoll told BBC Scotland News that she felt there was an “underlying inference” in the phone call that he wanted her to step aside. The call between the pair would likely have taken place sooner, Flynn said, had it not been for “significant goings on in Aberdeen locally”. This was an apparent reference to Nicoll’s husband, and former Aberdeen City Council co-leader, Alex Nicoll quitting the party and criticising its decisions in the city. Ahead of the 2021 election, the SNP changed internal rules to require MPs to resign their seat at Westminster to ****** for selection to Holyrood. The move was widely seen as an attempt to prevent then-Edinburgh South West MP and frequent internal party critic Joanna Cherry from standing. The party’s ruling body – the National Executive Committee (NEC) – could decide to scrap the rule for contests ahead of 2026. Flynn has said he understood that rule to be “election specific”. He said: “The rules don’t preclude me from standing – that would be a decision for the NEC.” PA Media Scottish National Party Leader John Swinney (left) knew that SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn planned to challenge a sitting SNP MSP for their seat First Minister John Swinney said last week that the SNP had yet to make a decision on whether its politicians could hold a dual mandate – where a single person sits in both Westminster and Holyrood. Swinney, who held seats at both Westminster and Holyrood between 1999 and 2001, told BBC Scotland News: “We’ve had times in the past when we’ve had dual mandates – I had a dual mandate myself for two years in the early days of devolution. “The party has got to come to its conclusions about these particular issues and it will do in the fullness of time.” Flynn also revealed that Swinney had been aware of his plans in advance of the announcement. He added: “The people who needed to know what my intentions were, were aware of what my intentions were.” Flynn has been tipped as a future SNP leader, but he said there would not be a contest to replace Swinney for a “long, long time”. He said any leadership election would be in the “dim and distant future”. Flynn added that he wanted to keep his Westminster seat, which overlaps with part of the Holyrood seat he hopes to contest, to avoid causing a costly by-election. He also reiterated that he would not accept a second parliamentary salary. PA Media Former Scottish ************* leader Douglas Ross was criticised for having three jobs The party previously criticised former Scottish ************* leader Douglas Ross for holding seats at Westminster and Holyrood, as well as being a professional football referee. Speaking at the SNP conference in August, Flynn joked about Ross having “one too many work commitments”. And in 2021, SNP MSP Karen Adam claimed Ross was “failing” his constituents “by thinking he can do both jobs properly”. Flynn’s comments came after the SNP announced on Saturday that the NEC was seeking to cut 10 of the party’s 26 headquarters jobs. A consultation with staff has opened, along with a voluntary redundancy scheme, in a push to bring down costs for a party which has struggled to attract major donors. Flynn described the move as a “tough, but necessary, decision”. PA Media Health Secretary Neil Gray last week said he was sorry he did not go to a “wider range” of football matches after using ministerial cars to attend four Aberdeen games The Westminster leader was also asked about the row over Scottish Health Secretary Neil Gray using a ministerial car to attend football games. But he insisted it was “not a scandal”. Gray, whose portfolio includes sport, has been under ***** after it emerged he had been chauffeured to six football matches at Hampden since becoming a minister, four of which included the team he supports. The Aberdeen fan apologised last week in a ministerial statement and conceded he should have went to a “wider range” of football matches. Flynn defended Gray and told The Sunday Show: “Our sports minister going to sporting events is not a scandal. “He’s doing his job and he’s doing his job to the best of his ability.” He added: “What tends to happen in politics is you tend to create relationships, have discussions with people and that could only happen by being in those places at certain times. “Neil is a huge sports fan, I think it’s right that he, as sports minister, goes to sporting matches, I’m struggling to see what the scandal is.” But speaking on the same programme, Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie said the issue was a scandal. She added: “You need to think about what your priorities are. “When social care is in crisis, why are you going to football games?” And Scottish Tory finance spokesman Craig Hoy said his party had made “the very reasonable ask” of the Scottish government for minutes of the meetings held at the matches to be published. 7. China to spend billions on another fab offering mature nodes — YDME formed to operate new $4.6B facility China to spend billions on another fab offering mature nodes — YDME formed to operate new $4.6B facility China has established the Beijing Yandong Microelectronics (YDME) semiconductor company, destined to operate a 300mm fab that will cost around $4.6 billion to get up and running. The chipmaker will be supported by BOE Technology and will produce microelectronics on mature process technologies, such as 28nm and above, reports the South China Morning Post. This semiconductor industry project will be spearheaded by YDME, a state-owned company listed on Shanghai’s Star Market, which is set to control a 24.95% stake in the facility. BOE Technology, a leading display manufacturer and supplier to major brands like Apple, is also involved, contributing $277 million for a 10% ownership. Other significant participants include Beijing Yizhuang Investment, state-owned Capital Operation and Management, and ZGC Group, which will collectively invest $2.765 billion, with the rest funded through loans. YDME’s fab is set to have a capacity of 370,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM) by 2027 and will use process technologies of 28nm and older. The fab will deliver a significant contribution to China’s aim to become self-sufficient in the production of microelectronics. China aims to increase its local production rate of chips from 16.7% in 2021 to 21.2% by 2026. Currently, Beijing’s semiconductor infrastructure is less developed than the Yangtze River Delta region around Shanghai, which has more established manufacturing and back-end processing capabilities. This new fab will enhance Beijing’s chipmaking ecosystem by expanding its manufacturing, packaging, and testing resources, allowing it to better compete in the semiconductor sector. This project, however, is pending approval from YDME shareholders and the Beijing State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, with expectations that the approvals will move forward to support the nation’s broader technology goals. Other ******** companies are making similar moves, with recent announcements from firms like Huahong Semiconductor, China Resources Microelectronics, and Guangzhou ZenSemi about 300mm wafer fab projects. 8. Sinner underlines supremacy with ATP Finals triumph Sinner underlines supremacy with ATP Finals triumph Jannik Sinner has cemented his status as the best player in men’s tennis by winning a first ATP Finals title in front of his home fans in Turin. The Italian has got better and better as the season has gone on, despite the doping case hanging over his head that could still lead to a suspension. His 6-4 6-4 victory over fifth seed Taylor ****** made it 26 wins from his last 27 matches, a run that included his second grand slam title of the year at the US Open, two Masters 1000 trophies and now the ATP Finals. By sweeping all five of his matches en route to the trophy, Sinner earned $7.4 million (US$4.8 million), the largest winner’s prize on the men’s tour. He has become the first Italian to win the finals and he went one step further than last year, when he lost the championship match to Novak Djokovic, who withdrew this time. And he did so without dropping a set, which was last accomplished by Ivan Lendl in 1986. The crowd inside the Inalpi Arena included multiple clusters of fans wearing orange — a tribute to Sinner’s red- and orange-********* hair, and how he once ate carrots during a match. Sinner faced a break point while serving for the first set but saved it with a big serve out wide that ****** was unable to return. Then he served an ace, his 10th of the set, to close it out. Another break by Sinner early in the second and the match was virtually over. Sinner extended his winning streak to 11 matches. He’s won 26 of his last 27 matches and ends the ATP season with eight titles and an overall record of 70-6. Sinner won his first two Grand Slam titles at the *********** Open and US Open in 2024 and had already clinched the year-end No.1 ranking. The year could yet have one more triumph, with Sinner set to head to Malaga, where he will attempt to help Italy successfully defend the Davis Cup title. But Sinner also tested positive in two separate ***** tests in March and a decision to clear him of wrongdoing was appealed by the World Anti-Doping Agency in September. A final ruling is expected from the Court of Arbitration for Sport early next year. Sinner’s explanation was that the banned performance-enhancer entered his system unintentionally through a massage from his physiotherapist, who had used a spray containing the steroid to treat his own cut finger. Biden allows Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike inside Russia Biden allows Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike inside Russia Joe Biden has given Ukraine the green light to use US-supplied long-range missiles to strike targets within Russia for the first time. The US president has signed off on the use of ATACMS rockets within the Kursk region, according to the New York Times. His decision will raise expectations that Britain, the US and France could swiftly authorise Kyiv to use Storm Shadow missiles in the same way. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, has spent months urging Britain, the US and France to allow him to strike targets within Russia. Sir Keir Starmer is known to be in favour, as is Emmanuel Macron, the French leader. But Mr Biden, who has a veto because the guidance chips in the rockets are US-made, has up until now been reluctant to go ahead. Kursk, which borders Ukraine, has seen heavy fighting since Ukrainian troops took several towns in the region. Mr Biden’s decision was said to be prompted by the arrival of North Korean troops in Kursk. Pyongyang is set to send as many as 100,000 soldiers, Bloomberg reported on Sunday. 11. Next Entry In the Battlefield Franchise Is Likely to See the Return of a Stance That’s A Huge Bonus for Tactical Combat Next Entry In the Battlefield Franchise Is Likely to See the Return of a Stance That’s A Huge Bonus for Tactical Combat Most of the main entries in EA’s Battlefield franchise have featured a gameplay mechanic called Leaning, something that most FPS players are familiar with. Rumors claim that this mechanic, which Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege popularised, is all set to be a part of the next Battlefield game. Leaning can give players a strong advantage on the battlefield (Image via EA) It’s been three years since the release of the last Battlefield game, Battlefield 2042. Since its inception, the franchise has closely competed with the Call of Duty franchise. Since ****** Ops 6 has taken the spotlight, EA must give fans the next Battlefield game soon. Leaning has been a crucial mechanic that was removed from Battlefield 2042 and now, it seems like EA has realized how important it was. Leaning Is Returning In The Next Battlefield Game A popular leaker named Tom Henderson has revealed on his Bluesky account that leaning is making a comeback in the next Battlefield game. This game mechanic allows players to have a better look around corners while avoiding the exposure of the shooter’s feet, legs, and torso. This mechanic is widely used by players in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Battlefield fans were very disappointed to learn that things like leaning and crouch run were removed from Battlefield 2042. At launch, the game couldn’t meet players’ expectations as it was criticized for its technical issues, lack of features, and changes to the gameplay. This time, it seems like EA has analyzed its mistakes and plans to use nostalgia to attract players. Next Battlefield Game Features A Modern Setting The modern setting of the next Battlefield game will remind players of Battlefield 3 and 4 (Image via EA) In September, the Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, Vince Zampella, appeared for an interview with IGN to talk about the next Battlefield game. He confirmed that the game will take back players to Battlefield 3 & 4 days, I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there. But I think for me, it’s that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days. So I think it’s nostalgic for players, for me, for the teams even. Battlefield general manager Byron Beede confirmed earlier this year that Battlefield 2042 will move away from a seasonal structure as the studio must “turn from the present to the future,” confirming that the development of the next Battlefield game is in full swing. In the same interview, Zampella acknowledged the competition between Battlefield and Call of Duty. He highlighted that “the best Battlefields have outsold some Call of Duties and other way around, back and forth.” He strongly believes that it can outsell Call of Duty, but Zampella made it clear that their goal isn’t to take down Call of Duty. Their goal is to make something that’s different. Source link #Entry #Battlefield #Franchise #Return #Stance #Huge #Bonus #Tactical #Combat Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

AMD dominates chip sales on Amazon — top ten best selling CPUs all come from Team Red, Intel’s highest entry sits at 11th place AMD dominates chip sales on Amazon — top ten best selling CPUs all come from Team Red, Intel’s highest entry sits at 11th place AMD has recently been on a roll with its desktop chips, growing its desktop processor market share to 28.7% in 3Q24 versus 15.8% just five years prior. This is a stunning 81% jump for AMD, and all at the expense of Intel. You can see evidence of this for yourself when you look at the best-selling CPUs on Amazon, with the top 10 spots held by AMD processors from the Ryzen 5000, 7000, and 9000 processor series. Intel sits awkwardly at 11th place, with its Intel Core i7-13700K, a processor two generations behind its latest parts. Some might argue that the Intel Core Ultra 200 chips are too new to penetrate Amazon’s bestseller list, but AMD’s premier gaming chip, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, has launched just this month and it’s already at pole position. This is despite the massive demand that drove prices up to more than $600 (from the original launch price of $479). If that is out of your range, you could go for the previous generation Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which sits at the number two spot and has a far more accessible asking price of $349. Swipe to scroll horizontally At number three, we have the four-year-old Ryzen 9 5900X, costing $226 — this is 60% off its launch price, making it a tempting deal for budget-conscious buyers who still want 24-threads of performance. It even outsells the Ryzen 9 5900XT, which launched this year but is more expensive at $308. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, priced at $194, sits in fourth place, while the older 12-thread (and cheaper, at $105) Ryzen 5 5600X is one place behind at fifth place. Spots six through ten in the Amazon CPU bestseller list are rounded out by the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D, Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 7 7700X, Ryzen 7 5800X, and Ryzen 5 5500. These processors give buyers a wide range of options — the cheapest processor starts at less than $100 and those who have the money could splurge more than $500, allowing you to get the best CPU for gaming in your budget. What’s interesting, though, is that there’s only one Ryzen 9000 series processor here. This is probably because of the disappointing benchmark results returned by the non-X3D variants at launch, with the company soon releasing a patch to fix the issue. Nevertheless, this small hiccup is nothing compared to the major headache that Intel has experienced with its high-end Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh desktop chips. 15. Men’s Origin to open in Qld, Allianz to host women Men’s Origin to open in Qld, Allianz to host women The next NSW State of Origin coach will be thrown straight into the deep end, with a series opener at Suncorp Stadium on May 28 awaiting Michael Maguire’s successor. The NRL confirmed the fixture for next year’s Origin matches on Monday, with Game II in Perth on June 18 and the series finale at Accor Stadium on July 9. It comes as the NSW Rugby League continues to weigh up its next option, with another board meeting scheduled for this month. Laurie Daley ******** the frontrunner for the role, but would have to give up select roles with his chief employer the TAB to take up the job. Daley coached the Blues for five series between 2013 and 2017, winning two of seven matches at Suncorp Stadium against a dominant Maroons side. The series opener also looms as crucial for Queensland, given their poor record in Perth. The Maroons have been beaten 38-6 and 44-12 in their two Origin matches at Optus Stadium, and can ill afford to go on the road 1-0 down in the series. Meanwhile, the NRL has opted to take the next step with women’s Origin in 2025, playing a game at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium for the first time. The series will again open on the Thursday night before Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on May 1, before the clash at Allianz Stadium two weeks later. Newcastle will then host the series finale on May 29. Sydney last hosted a women’s Origin match at CommBank Stadium in 2023, when a crowd of 12,972 turned up. But head office has been buoyed by big crowds in Brisbane, Newcastle and Townsville last year, and wants to back the product at the 45,500-seat Allianz Stadium. NSW are yet to decide if Kylie Hilder will stay on as coach of the women’s Origin team, with the Sky Blues only lifting the shield once in the past four years. 16. This app can teach you to play and analyze how you’re doing – musically, that is This app can teach you to play and analyze how you’re doing – musically, that is I’ve never been particularly musical. I’ve had three forays into learning to play an instrument. The first was with my dad. He’s a fantastic piano player so I grew up with music in the house and he endured hours on end trying to teach me the basics. It never did catch on, unfortunately. Around the same time, I also played the violin at school but as anyone will tell you, the violin is one of the worst-sounding instruments when you’re learning the basics. Suffice it to say, I didn’t stick with it for long and my siblings were probably glad. My final foray was when I was a bit older, this time at university. My friend owned a guitar and I thought, with all the free time I had between lectures this would be the ideal time to learn. Lessons with my friend began well but motivation subsided almost as quickly as it had emerged. Are you noticing a pattern? Now, 20 years on from that experience, I began wondering if now was the time to give it another go. I own a guitar and it’s a shame to see it just sitting around. But with evolving technologies, I knew there had to be a better way to learn. After scouring the App Store, I finally came across Yousician and it’s now become my very own personal tutor. Homescreen heroes This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps that we couldn’t live without. Read them all here. I downloaded the Yousician app to my iPhone and was faced with the same opening that seems to be part of every app created in the past few years: a set of questions designed to tailor my user experience. They weren’t difficult to answer, with Yousician wanting to find out more about what I was hoping to learn and my motivations for doing so. One of the primary questions related to which instrument(s) I was hoping to learn. I answered ‘guitar’ but there were also options for bass, ukulele, singing, and piano. It’s worth noting that if you choose piano, you’ll be prompted to download a separate Yousician app that is dedicated to learning that instrument. (Image credit: Future) It wasn’t long before I was up and running and watching a basic video about how to hold the guitar alongside explanations for what different parts of the instrument are called. The simple tutorial helped orient me and provided a helpful foundation for a full set of basic lessons, which I proceeded to work my way around. The lessons are well put together with great-quality visuals and sound. On-screen graphics also helped to guide me through each lesson. I also loved how easy it was to scrub through videos so I could re-learn items that I missed or needed to hear again. Because lessons are created by bona fide music teachers who know what they’re talking about, you can rest assured that you’re getting a great education. If you’re not sure, then you can always take advantage of the 7-day free trial. Sign up to be the first to know about unmissable ****** Friday deals on top tech, plus get all your favorite TechRadar content. Alongside the lessons, Yousicians provides you with instant feedback by listening to and analyzing your playing. This takes the basic video lesson functionality that could be accessed on something like YouTube to a whole new level of personal tutoring. Without it, I think Yousician would struggle to attract people to the platform long-term. (Image credit: Future) Along with lessons produced by qualified music instructors, Yousician has also partnered with world-famous artists to provide exclusive courses. The most famous among them might be Metallica musicians James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. The courses deliver tips, stories, and exclusive performances that enable students to play along to “Enter Sandman” and “Master of Puppets.” The app includes a huge range of popular songs to play along to, although if you want access to the complete library, then you’ll need a Premium+ plan. The library includes a wide range of genres, including pop, metal, and everything in between. Yousician has also partnered with famous artists to deliver the latest music. One example is the Billie Collection, which gives students access to Billie Eilish’s greatest hits. (Image credit: Future) One of the best things about Yousician is that it works on almost every device, including phones, laptops, or tablets. This provides users with a significant level of flexibility so they can jump on whatever device is convenient. Phones are ideal for learning when out and about, whereas a laptop at home provides a larger screen experience. Yousician offers a 7-day free trial but beyond that, users must pay for a plan. There are two main options, including Premium and Premium+. The basic package costs $119.99 / £59.99 and you can have the more feature-rich option for $139.99 / £89.99. The main difference between the two is that Premium+ provides access to an unlimited library of songs. There is also a Family plan, which gives users access to four premium accounts. Download the Yousician app on iOS or Android. Source link #app #teach #play #analyze #youre #musically Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  18. Biden allows Ukraine to use US arms to strike inside Russia Biden allows Ukraine to use US arms to strike inside Russia By Mike Stone and Humeyra Pamuk WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Joe Biden’s administration will allow Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, three sources familiar with the matter said, in a significant change to Washington’s policy in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Ukraine plans to conduct its first long-range attacks in the coming days, the sources said, without revealing details due to operational security concerns. The White House declined to comment. The move by the ******* States two months before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20 follows months of requests by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to allow Ukraine’s military to use U.S. weapons to hit Russian military targets far from its border. The change follows Russia’s deployment of North Korean ground troops to supplement its own forces, a development that has caused alarm in Washington and Kyiv. The first deep strikes are likely to be carried out using ATACMS rockets, which have a range of up to 190 miles (306 km), according to the sources. While some U.S. officials have expressed skepticism that allowing long-range strikes will change the war’s overall trajectory, the decision could help Ukraine at a moment when Russian forces are making gains and possibly put Kyiv in a better negotiating position when and if ceasefire talks happen. It is not clear if Trump will reverse Biden’s decision when he takes office. Trump has long criticized the scale of U.S. financial and military aid to Ukraine and has vowed to end the war quickly, without explaining how. Still, some congressional Republicans have urged Biden to loosen the rules on how Ukraine can use U.S.-provided weapons. Russia has warned that it would see a move to loosen the limits on Ukraine’s use of U.S. weapons as a major escalation. 19. Musk’s concerns over Google DeepMind ‘AI Dictatorship’ revealed in emails from 2016 — communications released during the recent OpenAI court case Musk’s concerns over Google DeepMind ‘AI Dictatorship’ revealed in emails from 2016 — communications released during the recent OpenAI court case Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI has opened a can of worms, as emails between OpenAI co-founders Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Sam Altman, and Musk himself have revealed turbulent behind-the-scenes drama. According to the Transformer, an email from Musk in 2016 said, “Deepmind [sic] is causing me extreme mental stress. If they win, it will be really bad news with their one mind to rule the world philosophy.” He further aired concerns that “Demis [Hassabis] could create an AGI dictatorship.” Demis Hassabis is one of the founders of DeepMind, an artificial intelligence research firm founded in 2010, and acquired by Alphabet, Google’s parent company, in 2014. The success of DeepMind is probably one of the major reasons behind the founding of OpenAI. Altman emailed Musk in May 2015, saying, “Been thinking a lot about whether it’s possible to stop humanity from developing AI. I think the answer is almost definitely not. If it’s going to happen anyway, it seems like it would be good for someone other than Google to do it first. Any thoughts on whether it would be good for YC [Y Combinator] to start a Manhattan Project for AI?” Musk responded with, “Probably worth a conversation.” And, after around six months, the company behind ChatGPT was founded. Aside from this inter-company rivalry, there’s also some tension going on behind the scenes at OpenAI. Two co-founders — Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever — had concerns about Altman and Musk. In September 2017, they emailed Altman asking him why he wanted to be CEO of the company and mentioned that they didn’t fully trust his judgment. Simultaneously, they were skeptical of Musk’s intentions. They said that even though he (Musk) claims to not want control of the final AGI, the negotiations revealed that absolute control was crucial to him. So, they (Brockman and Sutskever) ***** that the OpenAI’s structure could allow Elon Musk to be a dictator in the company, should he decide to become one. The Transformer says that both of these emails did not sit well with their recipients. Shivon Zillis — another OpenAI board member and a close associate of Musk — updated him regarding her conversation with Altman. She said that Sam lost trust with his two other co-founders, Greg and Ilya, through the negotiation process, adding that he felt they were inconsistent and childish. As for Elon, he replied directly to the two and said that it was the final straw for him and that the group should look for funding on its own or let OpenAI remain as a nonprofit entity. These emails reportedly happened between 2015 and 2018, when Musk was involved in OpenAI. Although it was founded as a nonprofit organization, OpenAI’s leadership team eventually realized that it would need billions to fund the massive computer power required to train its models. They realized that they needed to convert OpenAI to a for-profit entity to secure this funding, but negotiations between Musk, Altman, and its other board members faltered when they couldn’t agree on terms. Eventually, Musk left OpenAI and founded his AI startup, xAI, which now has a 100,000-GPU-strong data center with a 150-MW power supply. As for OpenAI’s funds, Microsoft eventually stepped in 2019, when it invested a billion dollars in the company. Today, OpenAI is one of the leaders in the field, with ChatGPT, and Microsoft is using its technology as the basis for Copilot. It also plans to invest billions more, as the software giant sees a future in AI. On the other hand, Intel got left behind after it declined to purchase 15% of OpenAI for $1 billion in 2017, saying that the company didn’t see AI providing a return on investment anytime soon. 25. Blame players not Borthwick for England woe: Steward Blame players not Borthwick for England woe: Steward Freddie Steward insists the players and not Steve Borthwick are at fault for the autumn washout that has piled pressure on England’s head coach. Steward believes Borthwick has been “let down” by his team after South ******* clinched a 29-20 victory on Saturday, completing a clean sweep of defeats by the southern hemisphere giants after New Zealand and Australia also stormed the Allianz Stadium this month. Borthwick has revealed there will changes for the climax to the series, against Eddie Jones’ Japan on Sunday, among them the return of Tom Curry and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso from concussion. Japan, ranked 14th in the world, are expected to end England’s five-Test losing run that has left Borthwick facing questions over his future. Steward believes it is the players who should be held responsible. “We almost let Steve down. I don’t think the fault should go to him at all. The fault probably ***** in our hands,” the Leicester fullback said. “As players we had a gameplan that put us in position to win that game. We’ve got to look at ourselves as to why we didn’t pull away at the end and go back ahead. “Steve is an unbelievable coach. He has a great rugby brain, is an unbelievable motivator and man manager. As players we believe in everything he’s bringing to this team.” England led 20-19 until Handre Pollard landed a long-range penalty in the 59th minute but their challenge fell away in the final quarter due to a high error count and indiscipline. “Steve’s honestly been fantastic. I’ve rarely seen a coach who has as much devotion as him. We need to do better by him. We need to finish off these games,” lock Maro Itoje said. “The staff have been brilliant throughout this campaign. We’ve got one more week to go. It’s on us as players and leaders to take responsibility and turn this thing around. “I feel there are certain areas where we have improved. But ultimately we haven’t got the results. We are in a results business.” England lost in the dying moments against New Zealand and Australia before fading against the Springboks. Borthwick believes his players were undercooked entering the campaign. “We have played against a series of very good teams that have come off the back of the Rugby Championship, so they are Test match hardened,” Borthwick said. “At the start of this series, you looked at the condition of the players and it wasn’t quite where it needed to be for teams stepping straight into Test match rugby. “These young players can be a top Test rugby side. These young players have only played a handful of Test matches. “They’ve gone against the double world champions when some had never played against South ******* before and they’ll take belief that they can compete against the best in the world. “But what we have to do is make sure that belief turns into winning.
