Trump lawyer Alina Habba questions fired veterans’ fitness Trump lawyer Alina Habba questions fired veterans’ fitness (L-R) Attorney Alina Habba speaks as US former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump looks on during a press conference at Trump Tower in New York City on September 6, 2024. Charly Triballeau | AFP | Getty Images President Donald Trump’s top lawyer Alina Habba on Tuesday questioned whether some military veterans fired from federal government jobs as part of an ongoing workforce reduction are capable of working or willing to do so. “You know, we care about veterans tremendously,” Habba told reporters at the White House. “But at the same time, we have taxpayer dollars, we have a fiscal responsibility to use taxpayer dollars to pay people that actually work,” said Habba, who holds the title of Trump’s counselor. “We’re going to care for them in the right way, but perhaps they’re not fit to have a job at this moment, or not willing to come to work,” she said. “And we can’t, you know, I wouldn’t take money from you and pay somebody and say sorry, you know … they’re not going to come to work,” Habba said. “It’s just not acceptable.” The Trump administration is engaged in a wide-ranging effort to cut the number of federal workers. How that is being done, and the personal stories of individuals such as veterans and others affected by the cuts, has led to blowback among the public. Habba spoke hours before Trump was set to address a joint session of Congress. Senate Democrats, in a press release Tuesday, said their guests for that speech would “include veterans indiscriminately fired as part of the Trump Administration’s mass terminations of federal government employees.” ********* Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for example, has invited as his guest Alissa Ellman, a disabled, toxic-exposed Army veteran who was illegally and indiscriminately fired from her job at the Buffalo VA during VA Secretary [Doug] Collins’ mass terminations of VA employees and veterans,” the release said. Veterans make up around 30% of the total federal workforce, according to a report by the Office of Personnel Management. As of September 2021, nearly 640,000 veterans were employed in that workforce. Of that tally, 53% were disabled, The chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee has advised GOP lawmakers to stop holding in-person town halls on the heels of several events that featured attendees strongly criticizing members of Congress. Read more CNBC politics coverage At an event Saturday in his home state of Kansas, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall left early after being grilled by some attendees about federal job cuts and other issues. One attendee, Chuck Nunn, identified himself as a conservative Democrat, who told Marshall he supported the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce fraud and waste in government spending. “But I think the way we are going about it is so wrong because there are unintended consequences,” Nunn said, according to High Plains Public Radio. “I support the veterans. But what you’re doing right now, what the government is doing right now, as far as cutting out those jobs, a huge percent of those people, and I know that you care about the veterans, are veterans,” Nunn said. “And that is a damn shame,” Nunn said. “That is a damn shame.” Marshall left the town hall after Nunn’s statement. 2. Exclusive-US and Ukraine prepare to sign minerals deal on Tuesday, sources say Exclusive-US and Ukraine prepare to sign minerals deal on Tuesday, sources say By Erin Banco, Gram Slattery and Andrea Shalal NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Ukraine plan to sign the much-debated minerals deal following a disastrous Oval Office meeting Friday in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was dismissed from the building, four people familiar with the situation said on Tuesday. President Donald Trump has told his advisers that he wants to announce the agreement in his address to Congress Tuesday evening, three of the sources said, cautioning that the deal had yet to be signed and the situation could change. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ukraine’s presidential administration in Kyiv and the Ukrainian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The deal was put on hold on Friday after a contentious Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that resulted in the Ukrainian leader’s swift departure from the White House. Zelenskiy had traveled to Washington to sign the deal. In that meeting, Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated Zelenskiy, telling him he should thank the U.S. for its support rather than asking for additional aid in front of the U.S. media. “You’re gambling with World War III,” Trump said. U.S. officials have in recent days spoken to officials in Kyiv about signing the minerals deal despite Friday’s blow-up, and urged Zelenskiy’s advisers to convince the Ukrainian president to apologize openly to Trump, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. On Tuesday, Zelenskiy posted on X that Ukraine was ready to sign the deal and calling the Oval Office meeting “regrettable.” “Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be,” Zelenskiy said in his post. “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.” It was unclear if the deal has changed. The deal that was to be signed last week included no explicit security guarantees for Ukraine but gave the U.S. access to revenues from Ukraine’s natural resources. It also envisaged the Ukrainian government contributing 50% of future monetization of any state-owned natural resources to a U.S.-Ukraine managed reconstruction investment fund. On Monday, Trump signaled that his administration remained open to signing the deal, telling reporters in a gaggle that Ukraine “should be more appreciative.” “This country has stuck with them through thick and thin,” Trump said. “We’ve given them much more than Europe, and Europe should have given more than us.” (Reporting by Erin Banco, Gram Slattery and Andrea Shalal; Additional reporting by Yuliia Dysa in Kyiv; Editing by Don Durfee and David Gregorio) Source link #ExclusiveUS #Ukraine #prepare #sign #minerals #deal #Tuesday #sources Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  3. Tech stocks down 7% since Trump’s inauguration as tariffs begin Tech stocks down 7% since Trump’s inauguration as tariffs begin CEO of Meta and Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, Lauren Sanchez, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk attend the inauguration ceremony before Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th U.S. president in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, Jan. 20, 2025. Saul Loeb | Via Reuters Technology stocks have slumped more than 7% since President Donald Trump took office in January, with new tariffs setting off a trade war and adding fuel to the risk-off sentiment on Wall Street. Economists warned the tariff spat could spike inflation and send shockwaves worldwide, prompting investors to dump winning stocks and mitigate risk. The fears have battered technology stocks that led the market in the wake of Trump’s presidential victory. The S&P 500 technology sector fell 1% on Tuesday, building on a 3.5% loss from the previous session. It’s down 7.7% since Trump’s inauguration. Tariffs may spike manufacturing costs for leading technology companies such as Apple and Nvidia that assemble and manufacture products outside the U.S. Nvidia, the leading artificial intelligence chipmaker, fell nearly 9% on Monday in response to the tariffs and has plummeted 16% since Trump took office. Shares continued to added about 1% Tuesday. The company makes most of its chips in Taiwan but manufactures some more complex systems in other regions. Nvidia said it plans to produce some chips at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s planned facilities in the U.S. Trump announced Monday that the company will be investing an additional $100 billion toward building five new fabrication facilities in Arizona, bringing TSMC’s total investment in the U.S. to $165 billion. Semiconductor stocks have also underperformed, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF down nearly 13% since the inauguration. Advanced Micro Devices has shed 18%, while Broadcom and Marvell Technology have tanked more than 20% and 29%, respectively. Elon Musk-backed Tesla has lost more than third of its value since the inauguration. Alphabet has dropped about 13%, while Microsoft and Amazon are down at least 10% each. Apple is up 3%. Trump smashed hopes of a potential last-minute deal Monday, clearing the way for 25% duties on Canada and Mexico to go into effect. He said there was “no room left” to discuss alternatives after weeks of negotiations. He also put an additional 10% tariff on ******** goods. All three countries responded to the new levies. Canada said it would implement retaliatory tariffs as soon as Tuesday, and Mexico said it is preparing to announce a plan Sunday. China has punched back with a tariff of up to 15% on some U.S. goods. 7. All the news from Samsung, Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi and more All the news from Samsung, Nothing, Lenovo, Xiaomi and more Mobile World Congress is taking place in Barcelona this week, offering manufacturers an opportunity to show off new gear without needing to hold their own splashy event. So far, we’ve learned about some new laptops and phones, as well as upcoming AI updates to Android and an internet connectivity announcement from Meta. Here’s a look at everything announced at Mobile World Congress that caught our eye. We’ll update this story throughout the week. Lenovo Sam Rutherford for Engadget Among the *******-name manufacturers, Lenovo has arguably had the busiest MWC so far. The company has revealed a whole bunch of laptops, including upgraded ThinkPads and several intriguing concept models. The ThinkPad T14s 2-in-1 has a design that’s more aligned with the convertible format of the Yoga lineup than a typical ThinkPad. The 14-inch machine can be equipped with a 400-nit WUXGA touch display. Other ThinkPads are getting spec upgrades, while Lenovo claims the new ThinkPad X13 Gen 6 has “one of the lightest ThinkPad designs ever.” The company has a fresh slate of laptops with generative AI capabilities as well. Some of Lenovo’s concepts have certainly caught our attention. It’s a bummer that the company doesn’t currently plan to turn the Yoga Solar PC Concept into a commercial device. Thanks to the solar cells on the casing, the laptop can soak up enough energy from the sun in 20 minutes to play an hour of videos. As little as 0.3 watts of light is enough to juice up the battery. While solar-powered laptops aren’t exactly new, the Yoga Solar PC feels polished. Here’s hoping Lenovo does more with the notion in the future. Sam Rutherford for Engadget In addition, Lenovo showed off some conceptual display accessories for a ThinkBook laptop. There’s an eight-inch screen that attaches to the side magnetically to help you, for instance, keep up with notifications and widgets. The Magic Bay Dual Display Concept adds a 13.3-inch panel to either side of the main display. There’s also a slim second display that’s designed to sit above your laptop screen and provide quick access to things like the time, weather, notifications, a focus mode timer, an AI assistant and notifications. Sam Rutherford for Engadget On top of all of that, Lenovo offered a look at a new prototype laptop with a flexible display. Building on the tech the company used in the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, the ThinkBook codename Flip AI PC Proof of concept (to give its full name) has a fold-out screen. This allows Lenovo to double the panel’s size from 13 inches to 18.1 inches. The ThinkBook Rollable’s display, on the other hand, can extend to 16.7 inches. Again, Lenovo doesn’t currently plan to release a commercial version of this fold-out laptop, but it’s an interesting idea. Samsung Photo by Mat Smith for Engadget. The main MWC news from Samsung this year is the company’s latest midrange and budget phones. The Galaxy A56 has a larger screen than its predecessor at 6.7 inches, but it’s thinner too at 7.44mm vs. 8.2mm. There’s now a small bump where the volume and power buttons are — a tweak that we feel makes the A56 easier to handle. Samsung has switched up the camera array in the A56. On the front, there’s a lower-res 12MP lens. On the other side, you’ll find an upgraded 12MP ultrawide, 50MP main sensor and a 5MP macro lens. The A56 has a bunch of AI-powered camera and image editing features, such as enhanced subject detection in portrait mode and an object eraser. Pre-orders are open in the *** for the Galaxy A56, which costs $499/£499. It will hit the *** on March 19, but folks in the US will have to wait until “later this year” for it. Samsung also revealed the Galaxy A36 5G and Galaxy A26 5G. Both devices have a 120Hz, 6.7-inch display with brightness of up to 1,200 nits. They also share an IP67 rating and 5,000mAh battery with the A56. However, the base models of each only have 6GB of RAM (compared with the A56’s 12GB). In addition, the A36 has the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor instead of the Exynos 1580 that the A56 boasts, while the A26 has a Exynos 1380 chipset. Xiaomi Sam Rutherford for Engadget Unfortunately, Xiaomi doesn’t have plans to bring a handset it showed off at MWC to the US. That’s a real pity, because no other companies are selling phones quite like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra in the country these days. Xiaomi teamed up with Leica to make a smartphone that leans heavily into photography. The camera array includes a 1-inch 50-megapixel Sony main sensor, an f/2.2 50MP ultrawide cam, a 50MP midrange lens with a 70mm focal length and a 200MP periscope array with a 100mm focal length — that equates to a 4.7x optical zoom. Some preset Leica filters help to tie the two brands’ knowhow together. That’s not all that might be interesting to mobile snappers. Xiaomi’s separate Photography kit includes an add-on camera grip with a physical shutter button, an adjustable dial and dedicated video button. You’ll have the option to attach a standard 67mm filter adapter to a case as well — in other words, some of the equipment you might use on a dedicated camera is compatible with the Ultra 15 as part of this setup. Moreover, the Ultra 15 has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,200 nits of brightness to help you get a good look at your captures. Plus, unlike some other ******** phones (like Huawei’s), Xiaomi supports Google services in HyperOS 2, which is an Android skin. The Ultra 15 starts at about €1,499 (around $1,572). Android Speaking of Android, Google announced two new AI-powered features for the operating system at MWC. The Live Video function, which Google first previewed at I/O 2024, allows you to share what your phone’s camera sees with Gemini so you can ask the chatbot questions about the footage. The new screensharing function works in a similar way. You can ask Gemini questions about whatever’s on your phone or tablet’s display. If they work as well as advertised, these features could be a boon for accessibility. Google will first offer them to Gemini Advanced subscribers starting later this month. Those with a $20 per month Google One AI Premium membership, which is included with some Verizon plans, have access to Gemini Advanced. Nothing Image by Mat Smith for Engadget Samsung wasn’t the only smartphone maker of note to show off two new mid-range devices at MWC. Nothing debuted its Phone 3a Pro and Phone 3a at the event — even though it has yet to unleash the Phone 3. The 3a Pro has a beefier camera module (quite literally as the device is about 10 grams heavier than the 3a). It contains a 50MP telephoto sensor with a 3x optical zoom; a 50MP primary sensor with f/1.88 lens and dual-pixel phase detection auto-focus (PDAF); and an ultrawide 8MP sensor with a 120-degree field of view. The handset has a telemacro mode too. As for the 3a, that boasts a main 50MP camera with single-pixel PDAF, but the other two sensors are the same as on the 3a Pro. The cameras are the main difference between the two phones, which both have a 6.77-inch AMOLED LTPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,300 nits of brightness. The phones have a 5,000mAh battery with support for 50W fast charging, and they run on a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset. The devices have Nothing’s multipurpose Essential Key, a physical button that can take screenshots and help you record voice notes. The phones also have some generative AI features, such as the ability to transcribe said voice notes and describe what’s in screenshots and photos. As usual, Nothing is initially offering these devices in the US through a beta program. Phone 3a pre-orders are open now and the $379 handset ships on March 11. That’s the date when pre-orders for the Phone 3a Pro go live. The $459 phone can be in your hands on March 25. There was more news out of MWC beyond new gear and OS updates. Meta and the Internet Society announced a partnership to bolster affordable internet connectivity around the globe. They’re jointly putting $30 million into the initiative over the next five years. A major aim of the project is to help build out infrastructure in areas where commercial providers have yet to do so. The Connectivity Co-Funding Initiative will also back training programs, community-centered solutions for underserved areas and locally owned networks. The Internet Society is hoping to find more partners to help with the project. Source link #news #Samsung #Lenovo #Xiaomi Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. AbbVie is the newest potential weight loss drug player AbbVie is the newest potential weight loss drug player A sign stands outside an Abbvie facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Brian Snyder | Reuters A version of this article first appeared in CNBC’s Healthy Returns newsletter, which brings the latest health-care news straight to your inbox. Subscribe here to receive future editions. The booming weight loss drug market has gained a new potential competitor. AbbVie said on Monday that it will pay up to $2.2 billion to develop Danish drugmaker Gubra’s experimental obesity drug, marking its late foray into the segment. Under the terms of the deal, the pharmaceutical giant will pay Gubra $350 million upfront. AbbVie will also pay up to nearly $1.9 billion if the drug meets certain development and sales milestones. Gubra, which provides pre-clinical contract research and peptide-based drug discovery services, will be eligible to receive certain royalties on global net sales of the drug, called GUB014295. Shares OF Gubra closed 15% higher on Monday after the licensing agreement was announced. Here’s what’s important to know about the medicine: It is an injection that mimics amylin, a different gut hormone than the existing obesity drugs on the market target. Amylin activates signals to the brain that suppress appetite and reduce food intake, according to AbbVie. The hormone also slows so-called gastric emptying, or the process by which the contents of the stomach are moved into the small intestine. Novo Nordisk‘s blockbuster obesity treatment Wegovy mimics a hormone called GLP-1 to tamp down appetite and regulate blood sugar, while Eli Lilly‘s own drug Zepbound targets both GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP. A few companies, including Novo Nordisk, Zealand Pharma, AstraZeneca and Structure Therapeutics, are developing products that target amylin. Some of those drugs are further along in development than Gubra’s medicine, such as Zealand’s petrelintide, but it is still too early to know which one is most effective for weight loss. Some drugmakers believe that targeting amylin could reduce the gastrointestinal side effects typically seen with treatments that target GLP-1, and may lead to less muscle loss than existing drugs. But those effects have to be proven in clinical trials. In a research note Monday, BMO analyst Evan Seigerman said “all-in we’re positive on the deal” for AbbVie. He said the company’s entrance into the obesity market could “come with synergies” to other areas of its business, such as inflammation and aesthetics. For example, researchers are studying the inflammatory benefits of obesity drugs for conditions such as a serious form of liver disease, cardiovascular outcomes and Alzheimer’s, among others, Seigerman wrote. “We see an opportunity for AbbVie to leverage their expertise in this space to better understand these potential benefits,” he added. An obesity drug could also complement AbbVie’s aesthetics business, which offers Botox, other facial injectables, skin care and body contouring, among other products, according to Seigerman. Notably, the deal comes as AbbVie looks for its next top-selling drug following the patent expiration for its mega blockbuster autoimmune medicine Humira. “Our partnership with Gubra marks our entry into the obesity field, offering a compelling opportunity based on the potential to address patient needs while also fostering long-term growth for our company,” AbbVie CEO Robert Michael, who took over just over six months ago, said in a statement on Monday. The deal, however, could be a “potential negative” for Structure Therapeutics, Seigerman said. That biotech company is still looking for potential partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies to further develop and commercialize its experimental GLP-1 and amylin products. Latest in health-care tech: AI takes center stage at HIMSS conference gets underway in Vegas Attendees at HIMSS in Orlando, Florida 2024. Courtesy of HIMSS This is Ashley, reporting live from Las Vegas, Nevada! I’m here on the ground at the 2025 HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition, where health care and technology leaders are touting their latest and greatest innovations. The exhibition floor opens up today, but there’s already been a flurry of announcements, primarily around – yes, you guessed it – artificial intelligence. Here’s everything you need to know so far: Microsoft on Monday announced a new health-care AI assistant called Dragon Copilot that builds on its existing dictation and ambient listening solutions. It’s the company’s latest push to stand out within the fiercely competitive AI scribing market, which has grown immensely in recent years. Read CNBC’s coverage here. Amazon on Monday said it’s bringing Amazon One to NYU Langone Health, which means patients will be able to check in for appointments by simply scanning their palm. The service will help NYU Langone speed up the sign-in process and alleviate administrative workloads. Read CNBC’s coverage here. Google on Monday announced new generative AI capabilities in its platform Vertex AI Search for health care, which allows developers to train, tune and deploy different AI models and applications. The company said Gemini 2.0 is now available as one of the models in the offering, and a new feature called Visual Q&A will allow doctors to search diagrams, tables and charts. Salesforce on Friday said it will launch Agentforce for Health, a suite of pre-built actions and skills that will allow providers, payers and others to easily build AI agents. Agentforce for Health specializes in public health, clinical skills and patient access and services. It comes after Salesforce announced Agentforce, an AI agent service, more broadly in September. Wolters Kluwer Health announced this week that the company is integrating its medical database UpToDate with Suki’s AI scribing tool and the health-care agent service in Microsoft Copilot Studio. Ideally, this will make it easier for doctors who use these platforms to pull up trusted medical resources more quickly and easily. GE HealthCare on Tuesday announced a new portfolio of cloud imaging software solutions called Genesis. The portfolio includes four different offerings that will help providers manage and store large quantities of medical images more easily, the company said. There’s still plenty more to come this week (assuming I don’t get completely lost in The Venetian), so make sure you’re keeping up with CNBC’s coverage. Egypt gets backing for counterproposal to Trump plan – National Arab leaders on Tuesday endorsed Egypt’s postwar plan for the Gaza Strip that would allow its roughly 2 million Palestinians to remain, in a counterproposal to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate the territory and redevelop it as a beach destination. It was unclear if Israel or the United States would accept the Egyptian plan, whose endorsement by Arab leaders amounted to a widespread rejection of Trump’s proposal. The vote was announced by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi. Tuesday’s summit in Cairo included the emir of Qatar, the vice president of the United Arab Emirates and the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia — countries whose support is crucial for any postwar plan. A final communique said Egypt will host an international conference in cooperation with the United Nations for Gaza’s reconstruction. A World Bank-overseen trust fund will be established to receive pledges to implement the early recovery and reconstruction plan, it said. According to a 112-page draft of the plan obtained by The Associated Press, hundreds of thousands of temporary housing units would be set up where Gaza’s population could live while reconstruction takes place. The rubble would be recycled, with some of it used as infill to create expanded lands on Gaza’s Mediterranean coast. In the following years, the plan envisages completely reshaping the strip, building “sustainable, green and walkable” housing and urban areas, with renewable energy. Youth arrested over online mosque massacre threat Youth arrested over online mosque massacre threat A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in Western Australia after an online threat alluding to a terrorist massacre against a recently opened Sydney mosque. A comment on the place of worship’s Instagram page threatened to “Christchurch 2.0” the mosque at Edmondson Park in the city’s west, an apparent reference to the New Zealand city where an *********** man killed 51 worshippers in 2019. “Following a referral … to the Western Australia Police Force just before 5pm (Tuesday WA local time), a 16-year-old boy was arrested at Eaton, in southwest Western Australia,” according to a NSW Police statement issued late on Tuesday. “He is currently assisting police with inquiries.” Police say there are no ongoing threats to the community. Places of worship needed to be safeguarded from hatred and violence, *********** Islamic House president Mazhar Hadid said on Tuesday night. “We are profoundly concerned by this threat and take it with the utmost seriousness. “We also urge the public to remain vigilant and to stand united against Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry.” The mosque officially opened on Friday, the first day of Ramadan. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said whoever was responsible for the abhorrent threat should face the full force of the law. “There is no place for this in Australia … racism and Islamophobia will not be tolerated,” he said in a statement. NSW Premier Chris Minns said the threat was the focus of a major police investigation. “Racist threats and Islamophobia will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law,” he said in a statement. “This is very distressing, particularly as Muslims right across the state are participating in prayer during the month of Ramadan.” *********** Islamic House said nightly prayers would continue after it had been assured of an increased police presence. 13. Stagflation fears swirl as Trump tariffs take effect and economy slows Stagflation fears swirl as Trump tariffs take effect and economy slows Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the Financial District in New York City on March 4, 2025. Timothy A. Clary | Afp | Getty Images A growth scare in the economy has accompanied worries over a resurgence in inflation, in turn potentially rekindling an ugly condition that the U.S. has not seen in 50 years. Fears over “stagflation” have come as President Donald Trump seems determined to slap tariffs on virtually anything that comes into the country at the same time that multiple indicators are pointing to a pullback in activity. That dual threat of higher prices and slower growth is causing angst among consumers, business leaders and policymakers, not to mention investors who have been dumping stocks and scooping up bonds lately. “Directionally, it is stagflation,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “It’s higher inflation and weaker economic growth that is the result of policy — tariff policy and immigration policy.” The phenomenon, not seen since the dark days of hyperinflation and sagging growth in the 1970s and early ’80s, has primarily manifested itself lately in “soft” data such as sentiment surveys and supply manager indexes. At least among consumers, long-run inflation expectations are at their highest level in almost 30 years while general sentiment is seeing multi-year lows. Consumer spending fell in January by its most in nearly four years, even though income rose sharply, according to a Commerce Department report Friday. On Monday, the Institute for Supply Manufacturing’s survey of purchase managers showed that factory activity barely expanded in February while new orders fell by the most in nearly five years and prices jumped by the highest monthly margin in more than a year. Following the ISM report, the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s GDPNow gauge of rolling economic data downgraded its projection for first quarter economic growth to an annualized decrease of 2.8%. If that holds up, it would be the first negative growth number since the first quarter of 2022 and the worst plunge since the Covid shutdown in early 2020. “Inflation expectations are up. People are nervous and uncertain about growth,” Zandi said. “Directionally, we’re moving toward stagflation, but we’re not going to get anywhere close to the stagflation we had in the ’70s and the ’80s because the Fed won’t allow it.” Indeed, markets are pricing in a greater chance the Fed will start cutting interest rates in June and could lop three-quarters of a percentage point off its key borrowing rate this year as a way to head off any economic slowdown. But Zandi thinks the Fed reaction might do just the opposite — raise rates to shut down inflation, in the vein of former Chair Paul Volcker, who aggressively hiked in the early ’80s and dragged the economy into recession. “If it looks like true stagflation with slow growth, they will sacrifice the economy,” he said. Sell-off in stocks The converging factors are causing waves on Wall Street, where stocks have been been in sell-off mode this month, erasing the gains that were made after Trump won election in November. Though the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell again Tuesday and is off about 4.5% through the early days of March, the selling hasn’t felt especially rushed and the CBOE Volatility Index, a gauge of market fear, was only around 23 Tuesday afternoon, not much above its long-term average. Markets were well off their session lows in afternoon trading. “This certainly isn’t the time to hit the panic button,” said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide. “At this point, I’m still in the camp that this is a healthy resetting of expectations.” However, it’s not just stocks that are showing signs of fear. Treasury yields have been tumbling in recent days after surging since September. The benchmark 10-year note yield has fallen to about 4.2%, off about half a percentage point from its January peak and below the 3-month note, a reliable recession indicator going back to World War II called an inverted yield curve. Yields move opposite to price, so falling yields indicate greater investor appetite for fixed income securities. Stock Chart IconStock chart icon 10-year Treasury yield in 2025. Hackett said he fears a “vicious circle” of activity created by the swooning sentiment indicators that could turn into a full-blown crisis. Economists and business executives see the tariffs hitting prices for food, vehicles, electricity and an assortment of other items. Stagflation “certainly is something to pay attention to now, more than it’s been in a while,” he said. “We have to watch. This is such a collapse in sentiment and such a change in the way people are viewing things and the level of emotion is so elevated right now that it will start impacting behavior.” White House sees ‘the greatest America’ For their part, White House officials are maintaining that short-term pain will be dwarfed by the long-term benefits tariffs will bring. Trump has touted the duties as way to create a stronger manufacturing base in the U.S., which is primarily a service-based economy. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick acknowledged in a CNBC interview Tuesday that there “may well be short-term price movements. But in the long term, it’s going to be completely different.” Market-based inflation expectations are in line with that sentiment. One metric, which measures the spread between nominal 5-year Treasury yields against inflation, is at its lowest level in nearly two years. “This is going to be the greatest America. We’ll have a balanced budget. Interest rates will come smashing down, and I mean 100 basis points, 150 basis points lower,” Lutnick added. “This president is going to deliver all of those things and drive manufacturing here.” Likewise, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that “there’s going to be a transition *******” and said the administration’s focus is on Main Street more than Wall Street. “Wall Street’s done great. Wall Street can continue to do fine, but we have a focus on small business and the consumer,” he said. ” We are going to rebalance the economy, we are going to bring manufacturing jobs home.” Important clues on where the economy is headed should come from Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report. If the jobs count is good, it could reinforce the notion that the hard data has remained solid even as sentiment has shifted. But if the report shows that the labor market is softening while wages are holding higher, that could add to the stagflation chatter. “We have to be observant. There’s the potential that the stagflation term just by itself, by talking about it, can manifest some of it,” said Hackett, the Nationwide strategist. “I’m not in the we-are-in-a-*******-of-stagnation camp, but that is the disaster scenario.” Source link #Stagflation #fears #swirl #Trump #tariffs #effect #economy #slows Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. The PS5 Is Getting An Officially Licensed Wireless Fightpad Next Month The PS5 Is Getting An Officially Licensed Wireless Fightpad Next Month This gamepad is officially licensed by Sony and works on PS5 and PC. Along with the usual four face buttons on the right side of the control, you’ll find two additional face buttons as R1 and R2. All six face buttons utilize microswitches, which Hori states were used to increase the accuracy and durability of the inputs. Even with R1 and R2 moving to the front of the controller, the Octa Pro still has four tactile shoulder buttons. You can also map inputs to the pair of remappable back buttons. The 8-gate analog stick was designed with fighting games in mind, so diagonal inputs should be easier to execute on the Octa Pro compared to a standard controller. Inside the box, you’ll find three hot-swappable D-pad designs. Hori also added a low-profile “analog slide pad” that resembles the Switch’s Circle Pad. The slide pad is meant to be used in menu systems. The controller is wireless, though it does include a USB-C cable for charging and wired play. It comes with a cable lock to mitigate the risk of a disconnection during a match. Hori says the the controller can run for roughly 10 hours between charges. In addition to the USB-C port, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack. You’ll find a cable lock feature on the back of the gamepad–so you can lock the cable in place to ensure it doesn’t disconnect during the heat of battle. Expect to get around 10 hours of game time per charge. While the Octa Pro is technically compatible with PS4, it can only be used in wired mode on PlayStation’s last-gen console. 15. Okta pops on Q4 earnings report Okta pops on Q4 earnings report Todd McKinnon, chief executive officer of Okta Inc., smiles during a Bloomberg Technology television interview in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Monday, April 4, 2022. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Okta shares soared 22% on Tuesday after the cloud-based identity management company delivered strong fourth-quarter earnings and beat estimates on guidance. The move put the stock on pace for its best day in more than a year. Okta posted adjusted earnings late Monday of 78 cents per share, while revenue increased 13% from a year earlier to $682 million. That beat the average analyst estimates of 73 cents per share of earnings and $669.6 million in revenue, according to LSEG. First-quarter revenue should come in between $678 million and $680 million, which also topped estimates. On the company’s earnings call, CEO Todd McKinnon called it a “blowout quarter” as bookings topped $1 billion in a single ******* for the first time. “We’re excited about the momentum we’ve built going into FY 2026 and are taking the right steps to advance our position as the leader in the identity market,” McKinnon said. “More and more customers are looking to consolidate their disparate and ineffective identity systems, and Okta is there to meet them with the most comprehensive identity security platform in the market today.” Okta allows companies to manage employee access or devices by providing tools such as single sign-on and multifactor authentication. Shares have rallied about 35% this year, including Tuesday’s pop, after slumping 13% in 2024. In late 2023, Okta suffered a high-profile data breach that gave access to client files through a support system. Some Wall Street firms turned more positive on the stock after the latest results, with both D.A. Davidson and Mizuho upgrading their ratings. D.A. Davidson called the likelihood of double-digit growth “durable” as the company shows signs of stabilization. Mizuho’s Gregg Moskowitz said the firm “underestimated” the upside to committed remaining performance obligations, or subscription backlog that the company expects to recognize as revenue over the next year. “More broadly, OKTA continues to be a clear leader in the critically important identity management market,” Moskowitz wrote. “And we now have a higher confidence level that OKTA will increasingly benefit from its group of newer products that have already begun to drive a meaningful contribution.” WATCH: Okta CEO Todd McKinnon talks to Cramer Source link #Okta #pops #earnings #report Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  16. Trump’s New Tariffs Could Strain Collection of Customs Fees Trump’s New Tariffs Could Strain Collection of Customs Fees The sweeping tariffs on *********, ******** and ******** products that President Trump imposed on Tuesday could strain the system that collects import duties and the government agencies that enforce those fees, trade and legal experts said. Collecting import duties is usually a routine task, but the new tariffs are being imposed on ******** and ********* goods, many of which have been imported into the United States duty-free for many years. Adding to the challenge is the sheer volume of goods subject to the new tariffs — U.S. imports from China, Mexico and Canada totaled over $1.3 trillion last year, or about two-fifths of all imports. The tariffs apply a 25 percent duty on goods from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10 percent on imports from China. Importers typically employ customs brokers to calculate and pay tariffs to the government agency that collects them, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Adam Lewis, a co-founder and the president of Clearit, a customs broker, said that it would not be hard to tweak software to collect the new tariffs, but that a crucial part of the tariffs payment system might need significant adjustments. Importers must buy a “customs bond,” a type of insurance that guarantees the duties will be paid. Mr. Lewis said some customers might have to increase the size of their bonds to cover the extra tariff payments. “Many of their products were coming in duty-free, and all of a sudden there’s going to be a 25 percent increase,” he said. “It’s quite large.” In addition, policing importers for tariff evasion will now become a much ******* task for Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Justice. Some importers may try to avoid tariffs by understating the cost of goods in customs declarations or by falsely claiming they were imported from countries not subject to tariffs. “The greater the breadth and severity of these new tariffs, the greater the likelihood that at least some potential importers may want to misrepresent the value or the origin of their goods,” said Kirti Vaidya Reddy, a former federal prosecutor who is now a partner at the law firm Quarles. If the government finds that an importer has not paid duties, customs officials are likely to demand that the importer pay what is owed and a penalty that can double or even triple the amount due. In a statement, a customs agency spokeswoman said: “The dynamic nature of our mission, along with evolving threats and challenges, requires C.B.P. to remain flexible and adapt quickly while ensuring seamless operations and mission resilience. These tariffs will help maintain America’s global competitiveness and protect American industries from unfair trade practices.” Some evasion cases have become the subject of criminal prosecutions. Last year, a Miami importer pleaded guilty to participating in an import scheme involving ******** truck tires that the Justice Department said had cost the United States more than $1.9 million in forgone tariff revenue. But stepping up enforcement efforts is likely to require that the Justice Department devote significantly more staff to pursuing tariff evasion cases, which, lawyers said, can take time to build. “The Department of Justice has the personnel and infrastructure to do it, but these cases are complex, transnational and document-heavy,” said Artie McConnell, a former federal prosecutor who is a partner at the law firm BakerHostetler. “You can’t rush it, and prosecutions likely won’t come quickly.” Source link #Trumps #Tariffs #Strain #Collection #Customs #Fees Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Good data strategy is needed for GenAI Good data strategy is needed for GenAI Without a good data strategy, generative AI becomes unusable technology for enterprises. This was true when ChatGPT started becoming popular, and it is even more accurate years later. The most recent example is the ******** AI startup DeepSeek. While most AI cloud providers like Google, AWS and Microsoft now offer the DeepSeek-R1 reasoning model, many AI experts believe that enterprises might be hesitant to use it due to the data it was trained on. Despite DeepSeek-R1’s innovation, it all comes down to the foundation, said Michelle Bonat, chief AI officer at AI Squared, an AI and data integration platform. “As GenAI expands and expands … the fundamentals are the fundamentals,” Bonat said on the latest episode of Informa TechTarget’s Targeting AI podcast. She added that while many organizations might have started with GenAI by just putting up a chatbot, many have found that if they do not have good-quality data, they might have to pause their GenAI initiatives. The reason is that the nature of generative AI systems is to produce responses. Therefore, if those systems do not have good-quality data, they tend to hallucinate. Thus, Bonat said the growth in GenAI initiatives across organizations has also led to an increase in conversation around data strategy, data quality and data cleanliness. “They’re very much connected,” she said. “GenAI has become important in the conversation that connects with data strategy, data quality, data cleanliness and also, ultimately, in responsible AI and governance within the organization.” Bonat added that enterprises should pay attention to data and responsible AI because it benefits their businesses. “It’s a competitive advantage to have responsible AI,” she said. “Customers want AI systems they can trust. … Being transparent and having responsible AI helps increase your brand reputation.” Esther Shittu is an Informa TechTarget news writer and podcast host covering artificial intelligence software and systems. 19. Ontario once again promises to nix $100 million Starlink deal over Trump tariffs Ontario once again promises to nix $100 million Starlink deal over Trump tariffs Ontario Premier Doug Ford has once again promised to end the province’s $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink after reversing course back in February, according to reporting by the CBC. The reasoning behind this reversal is fairly obvious. The long-threatened Trump tariffs have officially gone into effect, which pops a 25 percent tariff on most ********* goods and a 10 percent tariff on energy exports. The contract was signed in November of last year and tasked Starlink with providing internet service to remote parts of Ontario. Ford, a former staunch supporter of President Trump, is prepared to go even further to protect Canada’s interests. He said that if the tariffs persist that the region will be forced to issue its own 25 percent surcharge on electricity exported to the US. He also said he would shut off electricity “with a smile” on his face to US customers if things aren’t resolved, according to the Toronto Sun. “We also need to be ready to dig in for a long fight,” Ford said. “We need to be ready to escalate using every tool in our tool kit.” It’s worth noting that Canada provides electricity to US residents in Michigan, New York and Minnesota, and a shutdown would impact over 1.5 million people. Ford has also floated the idea of issuing a surcharge to mineral exports or ending them entirely. Ontario’s primary liquor wholesaler, the LCBO, has confirmed that it will stop purchasing and selling US-made alcohol. Additionally, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would be issuing its own retaliatory matching tariffs on US goods. To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. “Today the US launched a trade war against Canada, their closest ally and their closest friend. At the same time, they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin, a lying, murderous dictator. Make that make sense,” Trudeau said during a news conference. He also suggested that Trump was trying to weaken the ********* economy as an annexation strategy, but that “Canada will never be the 51st state.” Trump’s stated boogeyman behind these tariffs continues to be fentanyl, even though less than one percent of the drug arrives in this country via ********* routes. This data has been confirmed by both Trudeau and the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Don’t worry about SpaceX and Starlink’s financials. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just announced a partnership to install Starlink terminals at various airports, which seems like auspicious timing. The agency also reportedly ordered staffers to “begin finding tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal.” Government efficiency at its finest. 20. Qdrant update adds security measures for AI development Qdrant update adds security measures for AI development Vector database specialist Qdrant’s latest update includes security, automation and real-time observability capabilities aimed at enabling enterprises to safely scale AI development, including generative AI. Vectors are numerical representations of data automatically assigned by algorithms that enable users to give structured to unstructured data such as text and images so that such data can be searched for and discovered. In addition, vectors enable similarity searches so that relevant data can be found to inform models and applications. Generative AI requires high volumes of relevant, high-quality data for accuracy. As a result, vectors have gained popularity in the two years since OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT marked significant improvement in generative AI capabilities and spurred a wave of AI development. The latest Qdrant Cloud update, unveiled on Tuesday, features an API that simplifies managing cloud deployments, security features including managing hybrid cloud deployments that enable organizations to keep sensitive information on premises, and an integration with OpenMetrics to observe performance and usage in real time. With data security a significant concern for many organizations developing generative AI applications, Qdrant’s update addresses important enterprise needs, according to Donald Farmer, founder and principal of TreeHive Strategy. “Development teams are placing increasingly high demands on vector databases to enable more customized multimodal and agentic AI capabilities,” he said. “However, they are also very concerned with issues of privacy and data sovereignty, so … this Qdrant release, especially with hybrid cloud, plays well to those needs.” Based in Berlin, Qdrant is an open source database vendor whose platform enables users to store and search vectorized data. Vendors such as Pinecone and Redis are also vector database specialists. Meanwhile, more broad-based data management vendors, including tech giants AWS and Oracle, have made vector capabilities part of their database strategies. New capabilities With generative AI development requiring large amounts of data, it is imperative that data management tools, including vector databases, maintain performance speed as workload demands increase. As part of a push to provide enterprise-grade vector database capabilities, Qdrant in January added support for graphics processing unit-powered vector indexing given that graphics processing units (GPUs) deliver better performance and cost efficiency than central processing units (CPUs). In addition to performance, security is a major concern for many enterprises as they develop and deploy AI applications. Organizations need to combine their proprietary data with generative AI models such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini to develop generative AI applications that understand their operations. When data is combined with generative AI models, it is moved from storage in a database through pipelines that deliver it to the model for training. Public clouds can be more susceptible to data breaches than hybrid clouds and on-premises private clouds. Some organizations, therefore, prefer to develop their AI pipelines in hybrid or on-premises environments. After addressing performance concerns with its January update, Qdrant is now continuing its push to provide a more enterprise-grade platform by addressing security concerns, according to André Zayarni, Qdrant’s CEO and co-founder. “Qdrant’s focus has always been on high-performance vector search,” he said. “Now, with enterprises moving AI workloads into large-scale production, these applications must also meet stringent security, compliance and operational requirements.” Regarding the impetus for addressing security following performance improvements, user feedback was a main motivator, Zayarni continued. “Customer and community feedback … always is a core driver for our roadmap,” he said. “To be specific, the primary push for these features came from the need to scale AI applications from early production to large-scale enterprise deployment while ensuring security, efficiency and reliability.” Specific new Qdrant Cloud features include the following: Cloud API, a feature that simplifies managing cloud deployments by enabling administrators to manage clusters, authentications and configurations. Automated deployments and scaling the Cloud API and support for infrastructure-as-code workflows such as Terraform. Cloud role-based access controls (RBAC) that enable administrators to set fine-grained permissions for managing clusters, billing and hybrid deployments. An integration with OpenMetrics, a suite of observability tools built on the open source Prometheus monitoring framework, so users can track query performance and latency, request volumes, CPU usage and other metrics. While each aims to provide users with enterprise-grade capabilities, cloud RBAC is perhaps the most significant given that the number of people within organizations accessing and using vectorized data is rapidly increasing, according to Zayarni. “Data engineers, machine learning teams, IT security and even business users need controlled access to vector databases, without sacrificing security or agility,” he said. “Cloud RBAC [ensures] the right people have the right level of access.” Farmer, meanwhile, highlighted the Cloud API because it simplifies managing complex hybrid deployments. “As teams roll out their own hybrid solutions, it’s good for teams to be able to deploy infrastructure as code, especially when they are creating their own hybrid solutions because they need to be able to prototype, deploy and test numerous configurations to get it right,” he said. In addition, Qdrant’s recent addition of support for GPUs was significant, Farmer continued. There is currently a shortage of GPUs. Qdrant allows customers to use GPUs from any vendor, so provided customers can find available GPUs, they can be used to run Qdrant workloads. “I would normally say, ‘It gives users the freedom to choose,’ but right now it’s more the ability to work with whatever they are lucky enough to get their hands on.” Next steps Qdrant began in 2021 as an open source project. Qdrant Cloud, a commercial version of the vendor’s platform, was later launched in February 2023. Now, as evidenced by the recent additions of support for GPUs to improve performance and the new features that add security needed in industries such as finance and healthcare, Qdrant is improving its platform to make it more enterprise-grade. Toward that end, developing more ways to enable deployment flexibility is a priority, according to Zayarni. In addition, further performance improvements to lower latency, reduce manual intervention and enable users to develop deeper insights are part of Qdrant’s roadmap. “We will continue [investing in] enterprise-grade AI infrastructure,” Zayarni said. Jay-Z sues woman who dropped ***** claim against him Jay-Z sues woman who dropped ***** claim against him Samantha Granville BBC News, Los Angeles Getty Images Jay-Z is suing a woman who in February withdrew her legal action accusing the rapper of *****. His defamation action claims she “voluntarily admitted” being pressured into making false claims in what it describes as an “evil conspiracy” to extort money and damage his reputation. The anonymous woman filed her legal action in October and refiled it in December, accusing Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping her aged 13, after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Both rappers denied the allegations. Jay-Z’s defamation action, filed at a federal court in Alabama, also accuses the woman’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, and his co-counsel, David Fortney, of orchestrating her lawsuit. Mr Buzbee has garnered headlines internationally over the dozens of legal actions he has filed on behalf of people accusing Mr Combs of ******* misconduct, extortion, assault and other transgressions. Mr Combs has denied all the allegations. He is also facing federal sex-trafficking and racketeering charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Getty Images Jay-Z’s defamation action says the woman told his legal team her lawyers had made her make the false allegations. “Buzbee brought Jay-Z into it,” it says she said. And despite her admitting Jay-Z “did not ********* assault [her],” Mr Buzbee “pushed [her] towards going forward” with the false story to strengthen the case and extort more money, the defamation suit claims. Jay-Z’s action also notes alleged discrepancies in the woman’s interview with NBC News last year, including naming another celebrity guest at the MTV party, who had, in reality, been performing in a city thousands of miles away on the night. Her father also contradicted her claim he had picked her up after the alleged assault, it claims. Jay-Z’s defamation action says Mr Buzbee’s firm failed to vet the claims and the woman, who they say has a history of mental health issues and an assault charge. ‘Emotional toll’ Mr Buzbee has denied any wrongdoing and claims Jay-Z’s team tried to intimidate the woman into retracting her statements. In a statement obtained by BBC News, Mr Buzbee said Jay-Z’s defamation action had “no legal merit”. “Shawn Carter’s investigators have repeatedly harassed, threatened and harangued this poor woman for weeks, trying to intimidate her and make her recant her story,” Mr Buzbee said. “She won’t – instead, she has stated repeatedly she stands by her claims.” Jay- Z, who is married to Beyoncé, says the accusations have led to personal and professional harm, including the loss of business contracts worth about $20m (£15.8m) a year for his company, Roc Nation, and taken an emotional toll on his family, particularly his children. The BBC understands that the US technology giant has appealed to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, an independent court with the power to investigate claims against the Security Service. It is the latest development in an unprecedented row between one of the world’s biggest tech firms and the *** government over data privacy. In January, Apple was issued with a secret order by the Home Office to share encrypted data belonging to Apple users around the world with *** law enforcement in the event of a potential national security threat. Data protected by Apple’s standard level of encryption is still accessible by the company if a warrant is issued, but the firm cannot view or share data encrypted using its toughest privacy tool, Advanced Data Protection (ADP). ADP is an opt-in feature and it is not known how many people use it. Last week, Apple chose to remove ADP from the *** market rather than comply with the notice, which would involve creating a “*********” in the tool to create access. Apple said at the time that it would never compromise its security features and it was disappointed at having to take the action in the ***. The ***’s order also angered the US administration with President Donald Trump describing it to The Spectator as “something that you hear about with China”. Tulsi Gabbard, US head of intelligence, said she had not been informed in advance about the ***’s demand. She described it in a letter as an “egregious violation” of US citizens’ rights to privacy and that she intended to find out whether it breached the terms of a legal data agreement between the US and the ***. The FT, which first revealed Apple’s legal action, reports that the tribunal case could be heard in the next few weeks, but may not be made public. The Home Office refused to confirm or deny that the notice issued in January exists. Legally, this order cannot be made public. But a spokesperson said: “More broadly, the *** has a longstanding position of protecting our citizens from the very worst crimes, such as child sex abuse and terrorism, at the same time as protecting people’s privacy. “The *** has robust safeguards and independent oversight to protect privacy and privacy is only impacted on an exceptional basis, in relation to the most serious crimes and only when it is necessary and proportionate to do so.” Apple declined to comment. Whitney Spielfogel The service at The Nimb is as exceptional as its surroundings. Guests are treated with genuine Danish hospitality, where every detail is thoughtfully curated to create a bespoke experience. Whether it’s a perfectly crafted ********* at Nimb Bar, a decadent dining experience at Nimb Brasserie, a beautifully appointed buffet breakfast, or a moment of serenity at the rooftop pool overlooking Copenhagen (open in the summertime), every experience at this boutique hotel is pure magic. Their very own patisserie, Cakenhagen, completes the delectable culinary experience, leaving guests’ taste buds in delight. So why visit Copenhagen, you might ask? Copenhagen is the perfect blend of old-world charm and cutting-edge cool. This vibrant city is a must-not-miss on your travel bucket list with many reasons to check out this astonishing city. Tivoli Gardens: Staying at The Nimb gives you prime ********* access (literally!) to one of the world’s oldest and most beautiful amusement parks, a place that inspired Walt Disney himself. A visit to Tivoli Gardens is like stepping into a fairytale. As one of the world’s oldest amusement parks – dating back to 1843 – it seamlessly blends nostalgia, whimsy, and modern entertainment all in one. Tivoli isn’t just an amusement park… it’s a lush, beautifully landscaped wonderland. Expect charming pavilions, serene lakes, and vibrant flower gardens, all illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights at night. Tivoli transforms with the seasons, making every visit unique. In the Spring & Summer, Tivoli is bursting with flowers, concerts, and vibrant energy, the park then turns into a spooky wonderland with pumpkins, eerie decorations, and themed rides for Halloween, and rounds out the calendar year around Christmas with a winter wonderland, complete with festive markets, glittering lights, and a magical holiday atmosphere straight out of a snow globe. Nestled right next to the Nimb Hotel, Tivoli is a must-visit for travelers of all ages. The hotel’s concierge can arrange for a backstage tour of the gardens, with access to feeding the incredible variety of fishes in their aquarium (this was a fan fav for my children!), top restaurant reservations within the amusement park and tickets to live concerts and cultural events. The Nimb Since the summer of 2021, visitors to Tivoli Gardens have enjoyed the chance to experience some of the world’s most talented chefs at culinary popups at the Japanese Pagoda. Restaurants like the Slovenian Hisa Franko, Danish AOC, Faroese KOKS, ******* Lafleu, Aska from New York, along with Spanish master chef Paco Morales, holder of three Michelin stars, and one-star Michelin establishments such as Swedish Knystaforsen, Icelandic Dill, and Portuguese Vistas Rui Silvestre, are among the distinguished restaurants and chefs that have provided exceptional culinary experiences during their residencies. The intention is to transform the Japanese Pagoda into a year-round destination where guests can immerse themselves in cultures and cuisines from across the globe, featuring a rotating lineup of star chefs and world-class menus. Tivoli Gardens is more than just an amusement park; it’s a cultural icon that captures the heart of Copenhagen’s charm. Whether you’re looking for gourmet dining, thrills, or a magical evening stroll, Tivoli delivers an unforgettable experience. The Nimb Nyhavn & The Canals: Nyhavn is probably one of the most photographed places in Denmark, and for good reason! The vibrant, multicolored buildings lining the canal create a stunning backdrop (social media worthy to say the least!) and whether you’re strolling along the water or enjoying a meal at one of the many outdoor restaurants, the colorful waterfront of Nyhavn is picture perfect! Originally a busy commercial port, Nyhavn was once home to sailors, merchants, and even Hans Christian Andersen (author of The Little Mermaid and many other fairytales), who lived in not one, but three, different houses here. A canal tour offers a scenic perspective of the city’s stunning architecture, and you’ll enjoy a cruise through the city’s scenic waterways, passing historic landmarks and modern architectural gems. If the weather is nice, opt for an uncovered boat for the best views or a sunset or evening tour offers a magical perspective of the city lights. Nyhavn & The Canals are quintessential Copenhagen experiences that blend history, beauty, and relaxation. Whether you’re enjoying ice cream or a ********* at a charming café by the water, snapping photos of the vibrant facades, or gliding through the canals on a boat tour, this area perfectly captures the soul of the city. Whitney Spielfogel World-Class Dining: Copenhagen is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, including Noma and Geranium (both with 3 Michelin stars!), but even a simple smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) at a local eatery is a culinary delight. This city is truly a food lover’s paradise, offering everything from world-class dining to cozy neighborhood cafés and innovative street food (a Danish-style gourmet hot dog was a crowd pleaser with my kiddos in Copenhagen). The city’s New Nordic cuisine movement, pioneered by legendary restaurants like the top-rated Noma, has transformed Copenhagen into one of the most intriguing gastronomic destinations. You can expect many restaurants to focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients prepared in innovative ways, including foraged herbs, fresh seafood, and unique flavor combinations that highlight the natural bounty of Scandinavia. Whether you’re indulging in a once-in-a-lifetime tasting menu, enjoying a laid-back meal by the canals, participating in a cooking class (which The Nimb hotel can easily arrange for you… one of our most enjoyable experiences during our visit), or savoring a perfectly crafted pastry, every meal here is an experience worth savoring. Whitney Spielfogel Design & Culture: Copenhagen is considered a global capital of design, where Scandinavian minimalism meets bold creativity. Whether you’re exploring sleek boutiques, cutting-edge furniture stores, or charming independent shops, the city’s commitment to aesthetics and craftsmanship is evident at every turn. Danish design is known for its clean lines, functionality, and timeless elegance, blending beauty with practicality. A visit to Copenhagen wouldn’t be complete without a stroll on Strøget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping streets, lined with everything from high-end brands (Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Prada) to Danish fashion staples like Ganni and Samsøe Samsøe. Forget tacky tourist souvenirs – Copenhagen offers high-quality, stylish keepsakes and a shopping experience that is as chic as the city itself. Cycling-Friendly City: Rent a bike and experience Copenhagen like a local, riding along the harbor, through charming neighborhoods, and past historic landmarks with ease. Many of Copenhagen’s top attractions – Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid statue, The Royal Palace (seeing the changing of the guards march throughout the city was a core memory for our family!), and the Tivoli Gardens – are easily accessible by bike. Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, with a well-designed infrastructure that makes cycling safe, easy, and enjoyable. In fact, most of the city’s population commutes by bike daily, and visitors quickly discover that two wheels are the best way to see the city like a local (our wheels consisted of a double baby stroller, which was also very easy to get around with). Whitney Spielfogel Hygge & Hospitality: The Danish concept of hygge – a feeling of coziness and contentment – is alive in every candlelit cafe, warm conversation, and inviting space throughout the city. The Nimb Hotel is a perfect example of hygge in luxury form, with its intimate atmosphere, fireplace-lit lounges, and beautifully designed rooms. Another highlight from our time in this cozy city was a memorable meal at Vækst, a plant-filled eatery, embracing hygge with natural light, hanging greenery, and a greenhouse-like setting, serving fresh, modern Nordic cuisine. Despite its refined dishes, Vækst maintains a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, making it perfect for an intimate dinner (where I happened to celebrate my birthday!) or a casual yet elegant meal. Whether it’s a warm dining experience at a local bistro or a glistening evening at Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s hospitality scene revolves around fostering connection and warmth. Whitney Spielfogel A stay at The Nimb Hotel elevates any visit to Copenhagen, offering an experience that is as refined as it is enchanting. Whether you’re coming for the history, the food, time off the grid to unwind, or the undeniable charm, this city – and most importantly, this hotel – promises an unforgettable visit. A stay at The Nimb Hotel is truly a must for anyone seeking the perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and hygge in Copenhagen. Book your stay now to experience the magic of springtime at The Nimb Hotel. With the Tivoli Gardens in full bloom and the city coming to life with vibrant colors, there’s no better time to indulge in the ultimate luxury experience.
