  2. The US is killing someone by firing squad for the 1st time in 15 years. Here’s a look at the history The US is killing someone by firing squad for the 1st time in 15 years. Here’s a look at the history It was a punishment for mutiny in colonial times, a way to discourage desertion during the Civil War and a dose of frontier justice in the Old West. In modern times, some consider it a more humane alternative to lethal injection. The firing squad has a long and thorny history in the U.S. South Carolina on Friday is scheduled to put the first person to death by firing squad in the U.S. in 15 years. Brad Sigmon, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend’s parents in 2001, chose it over the two other methods in South Carolina — the electric chair and lethal injection. Since 1608, at least 144 civilian prisoners have been executed by shooting in America, nearly all in Utah. Only three have occurred since 1977, when the use of capital punishment resumed after a 10-year pause. The first of those, Gary Gilmore, caused a media sensation in part because he waived his appeals and volunteered to be executed. When asked for his last words, Gilmore replied, “Let’s do it.” Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Five states — Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah — authorize the use of firing squads in certain circumstances. Here’s a look at the history behind the death penalty method. 1608-1865: Jamestown, George Washington and the Civil War The earliest recorded execution by shooting came in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1608. Capt. George Kendall came to be suspected of mutiny — and possibly of conspiring with Spain. Centuries later, in 1996, archaeologists discovered a bullet-ridden body buried in the fort’s walls that many suspect was Kendall. In the American Revolution, public executions by firing squad were sometimes used to punish desertion. In 1776, then-Gen. George Washington spared a Connecticut soldier, Ebenezer Leffingwell, who was sentenced to die after fighting with a superior, the Journal of the American Revolution recounted. Leffingwell had been bound, blindfolded and forced to kneel in front of a crowd when a chaplain involved in the proceedings announced he would live. Mark Smith, a history professor at the University of South Carolina, said firing squads were used — not often — by both sides during the Civil War to create a “public spectacle, a vision of terror” to keep soldiers in line. “A man could be sitting on his own coffin at times or blindfolded, shot by six or seven men, one of whom has a blank,” the professor said. “These were gatherings designed to shock and it worked.” At least 185 men were executed by firing squad during the Civil War, according to Christopher Q. Cutler in a Cleveland State Law Review article. 1860s to 1915: Executions in the Old West Firing squads were primarily used only in Utah, where the lawmakers in 1851 designated three possible punishments for *******: shooting, hanging or beheading. The first firing squad execution was carried out in a courthouse enclosure, disappointing a crowd waiting outside to see it. Only one other state since 1900 has executed someone by shooting: Nevada, which in 1913 built a contraption that fired three guns by pulling strings because it had trouble finding volunteers to serve on a firing squad. An 1877 sentencing in Utah gave rise to the first U.S. Supreme Court case challenging a specific execution method. Wallace Wilkerson, who shot a man to death during a heated game of cribbage, challenged authorities’ plans to kill him by firing squad. The court declined his appeal, finding that unlike some other bygone methods — drawing and quartering, for example — execution by firing squad would not bring the sort of “terror, pain and disgrace” that would violate the 8th Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. As it turned out, Wilkerson’s killing was botched, Cutler noted: Reportedly intoxicated and smoking a cigar, he moved slightly just before the executioners shot. Badly wounded, he fell to the ground, saying, “My God! They’ve missed it.” It took him an agonizing 15 minutes to die. Among other famous firing squad executions in Utah was the 1915 death of labor activist and songwriter Joe Hill, who until the end insisted on his innocence in the ******* of a grocer and his son. Modern times: lethal injections vs firing squads One of the reasons firing squads did not gain much use beyond Utah was that people viewed them as barbaric, according to Deborah Denno, a criminologist at Fordham School of Law. The bloody reality of those killings, as well as botched hangings and electrocutions, which sometimes led people to struggle and suffer, prompted states in the early 1980s to begin turning to lethal injection, a procedure viewed — at least initially — as more humane. But since then, lethal injection has become the most commonly botched execution method, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. States have struggled to obtain the required drugs, and some have taken another look at firing squads — an old but largely reliable method. Lawmakers in Idaho are considering a bill that would make firing squads the primary method of execution there. Two people now on Utah’s death row have requested firing squads. Denno urged policymakers to reconsider firing squads in a 2016 law review article. Among those who have expressed similar views is Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote in a 2017 dissent that “in addition to being near instant, death by shooting may also be comparatively painless.” “Lethal injection has only gotten worse over the decades,” Denno told The Associated Press in an interview. “The firing squad really stands out as a relatively decent method of execution.” In the annals of executions in the U.S., she said, there have been just two botched firing squad executions: Wilkerson’s and that of Eliseo Mares in Utah in 1951. It’s not clear what happened in Mares’ case, but reports surfaced decades later that the executioners disliked him and intentionally missed his heart to prolong his suffering. With greater oversight and expert shooters, those problems wouldn’t be repeated today, Denno said. In South Carolina, Sigmon, 67, chose to die by firing squad because the alternatives seemed worse, his attorney Gerald “Bo” King wrote in a statement. Some aspects of his execution are modern — for example, bullets are deadlier and guns are now more precise. But much of it would have been familiar in Utah more than a century ago: A hooded inmate with a target over his heart is bound to a chair in a death chamber and may say his final words. Nearby, volunteer officers await the order to fire. —- Associated Press reporters Ed White in Detroit; Matthew Brown in Billings, Montana; and Rebecca Boone in Boise, Idaho, contributed. 5. Indian court orders release of Briton Christian Michel held without trial for years Indian court orders release of Briton Christian Michel held without trial for years A British man detained in India for six years without trial over a high-profile corruption case must be released on bail, the Delhi High Court has ruled. Christian James Michel, an arms consultant, is accused of bribing Indian officials to win a multimillion-dollar helicopter contract for British-Italian defence company AgustaWestland. He denies the charge. He was extradited to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2018 and has been in custody ever since, in what a judge called an “exceptional” situation. The AgustaWestland controversy was one of several corruption cases linked to India’s former ruling Congress party, some of which fizzled out eventually. In 2010 the Indian government signed a deal with AgustaWestland’s parent company to purchase 12 helicopters. The alleged irregularities came to light when India’s federal auditor reported that the government may have vastly overpaid for the $753m (£455m) deal, which was eventually scrapped in 2014. According to court documents, Mr Michel is alleged to have received around €42m ($44.7m, £25m) for securing the contract. His lawyer has argued that there is no evidence to connect him with the alleged offence. India’s financial crime fighting agency and domestic crime bureau have held separate investigations into Mr Michel. But both of those investigations have yet to be concluded and trials have yet to begin, leading to a “prolonged incarceration” of Mr Michel, the Delhi High Court noted. The judge said his six years in pre-trial custody was also “alarmingly close” to the maximum punishment of seven years’ imprisonment for money laundering, which is one of the charges he faces. The court decided to grant him bail in one of the cases, after the Supreme Court did the same in another case on 18 February. This means that Mr Michel is now free to leave Delhi’s high-security Tihar jail, but he cannot leave India as his passport has been seized. The deal for 12 three-engine AW-101 helicopters was signed in February 2010 after AgustaWestland beat off competition from US and Russian rivals. The aircraft were intended for an elite squadron of the Indian air force which ferries around the president, the prime minister and other VIPs. Only three of the helicopters were delivered to India before the deal was scrapped. Italian prosecutors suspected that kickbacks worth almost $67.6m were paid to Indian officials to secure the contract. Giuseppe Orsi, the former chief of AgustaWestland’s parent company which at the time was called Finmeccanica, and Bruno Spagnolini, the former head of AgustaWestland, were tried in Italy on fraud and corruption charges. Both were acquitted in 2018. Indian officials have said their acquittals would have no bearing on the case in India. India’s air force chief at the time of the deal was arrested for bribery in 2016, and later released on bail. Country Road, Mimco owner suffers slump in profit, with *********** brands under review Country Road, Mimco owner suffers slump in profit, with *********** brands under review Country Road Group — the company behind the eponymous fashion label and other well-known clothing and accessories brands — has blamed the discount-drenched retail environment for its 72 per cent slump in half-year profit. The group’s South Africa-based parent company, Woolworths Holdings, told the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on Wednesday CRG’s operating profit slumped to $14.2 million in the 26 weeks to the end of December. Sales declined 6.2 per cent for the ******* and by 7.8 per cent on a comparable-store basis. This was in-line with guidance provided in January. “The apparel trading environment in Australia and New Zealand remains significantly constrained, characterised by reduced footfall and spend and intense promotional activity,” the company said. “Higher promotional activity to manage inventory levels and the impact of a weaker *********** dollar on input costs resulted in a 320 (basis point) decrease in the gross profit margin to 58.9 per cent.” CRG — which is also behind brands Mimco, Witchery, Politix and Trenery — is also facing operational and cost headaches after Woolworths Holdings sold department store David Jones to Sydney private equity firm Anchorage Capital at the end of 2022. It separated CRG from David Jones last financial year. Woolworths Holdings said CRG was now in the midst of a significant restructure to reconfigure its operating model as a standalone business. The parent company expects the trading environment to remain challenging. “In Australia, whilst a gradual recovery in GDP growth, alongside easing monetary policy is expected, the retail sector is likely to remain highly promotional until such time as the pressures of living costs ease,” it said, adding it would reassess CRG’s under-performing brands. 7. Rachel Maddow Did Not Get Fired From MSNBC – Here’s What Happened Rachel Maddow Did Not Get Fired From MSNBC – Here’s What Happened MSNBC continues to spark concern among netizens who believe the network has fired Rachel Maddow. This comes after the recent cancellations of shows by Joy Reid and Alex Wagner, leaving many worried that Maddow could be next in line. But is it really true that Rachel Maddow will no longer host on MSNBC? Here’s everything going on within the network. Did MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow get fired from the Network? No, Rachel Maddow did not get fired from her position at MSNBC. Netizens are concerned for Maddow as MSNBC recently laid off most of her staff. The cuts come as part of a major restructuring within the network. According to The Guardian, MSNBC has informed many producers of Maddow’s show that they will have the option to apply for new positions when they become available, with priority given to internal candidates over external ones. However, Maddow will retain her position on the show, along with her executive producer, Cory Gnazzo, and other senior personnel. The report confirmed that most of Maddow’s team—who had also worked with other hosts, including Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart, Ayman Mohyeldin, and José Díaz-Balart, whose shows were also canceled—will no longer be part of the network. However, the affected employees can choose to reapply in the future. MSNBC is currently splitting from its parent company, NBCUniversal, leading to major changes. As a result, the network faces new financial challenges. In response, MSNBC is now exploring cost-cutting measures. This move follows CNN’s recent decision to lay off 200 employees. These shifts, along with significant personnel changes, have raised further concerns about the network’s future. In her recent monologue, Maddow criticized the network’s decision to terminate employees and let Joy Reid go. She implied that the higher-ups were acting unfairly, suggesting that firing Reid and demoting Wagner had racial undertones. “That has never happened at this scale, in this way before when it comes to programming changes, presumably because it’s not the right way to treat people, and it’s inefficient and it’s unnecessary and it kind of drops the bottom out of whether or not people feel like this is a good place to work, and so we don’t generally do things that way,” asserted Maddow. 8. London isn’t alone in facing IPO challenges, problem is global London isn’t alone in facing IPO challenges, problem is global LSEG signage is seen on screens in the lobby of the London Stock Exchange in London, Britain, May 14, 2024. Hannah Mckay | Reuters London’s listing problem isn’t limited to the capital, with weakness in the U.S. and Asia too, according to the head of the London Stock Exchange Group. According to EY, there were just 18 initial public offerings on the London Stock Exchange last year – eight of which came in a fourth quarter flurry. But LSEG CEO David Schwimmer said it’s not a unique problem. “We have seen on a global basis, a pretty subdued environment for IPOs, and that’s been in New York, that’s been in Hong Kong,” he told CNBC. “That’s got a lot of attention.” It’s led to concerns London is losing – or has lost – its mojo. Mining giant Glencore is mulling a move away, following high profile departures from the likes of Flutter Entertainment, Tui and Just Eat Takeaway. In fact, the LSE lost 88 companies last year, whether by delisting or transferring primary listings elsewhere — the highest since 2009. Schwimmer had a warning for those looking elsewhere. “When you talk about companies that have gone to New York, it’s not such a pretty picture,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.” “If you look over the last 10 years, 20 U.K. companies have gone to list in New York and raised over $100 million. Of that 20, four are trading up, something like nine have delisted, and the rest are trading down over 80%. So I think you have to be careful with the narrative of the grass is always greener.” Euronext CEO Stéphane Boujnah expressed his own concerns for the U.K. capital, telling CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” that “London has lost its leadership when it comes to liquidity for shares.” Strong pipeline Despite London listing volumes falling to a multi-decade low last year — with proceeds down by almost a fifth compared to 2023 — the LSEG chief is optimistic for this year, saying the pipeline is looking significantly better. And the LSEG chief is optimistic for this year, saying the pipeline is looking significantly better. “If you look at the capital raising that has taken place on the London Stock Exchange, not necessarily IPOs but follow-ons, that market is doing very, very well and there’s more capital raised on the London Stock Exchange than the next three European exchanges combined,” Schwimmer said. Goldman Sachs also shares a bullish view on the U.K.’s IPO landscape. Richard Cormack, head of equity capital markets for EMEA at Goldman Sachs, said in February that he expected IPO activity would pick up in 2025 as political uncertainty following last year’s election subsides. While some U.K. and European companies may still be attracted to the U.S., Cormack argued it is unlikely that we’ll see a flood of U.K. or European non-tech, non-biopharma companies list outside of their home market. Hong Kong comeback? The idea that the U.S. is a go-to destination for cross-border listings has also been challenged by a new competitor on the scene: Hong Kong. The city, which is preparing for a $20 billion listings revival this year according to the Financial Times, is poised to capitalize on increasing trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Shares in China’s largest bubble tea chain, Mixue, surged more than 40% on their Hong Kong debut earlier this month. The Hong Kong listing was 5,200 times oversubscribed, while the international offering was more than 35 times oversubscribed. Bonnie Chan, CEO of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia,” she’s seen a surge in demand from global investors. “We are seeing much stronger interest from the United States, as well as Europe and the rest of the world,” she said. “There is certainly appetite for investors to pick up these mega IPOs.” Source link #London #isnt #facing #IPO #challenges #problem #global Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. Ohio teen stayed in locked SC hotel room with ex-girlfriend’s body for hours, friend says Ohio teen stayed in locked SC hotel room with ex-girlfriend’s body for hours, friend says The last time Brooklyn Ferrell spoke to Natalie Martin was on June 6, 2023. Her friend had texted her at 10:02 p.m. Just hours later, Martin was dead, at the hands of her high school boyfriend. The Ohio 18-year-old was strangled in her Myrtle Beach area hotel room, where she was found unresponsive the morning of June 7, 2023. She had just graduated from high school and was on a trip with friends. Among them was Blake Linkous, who was arrested for Martin’s ******* and pleaded guilty Monday to her death during his trial. He stayed in bedroom for hours with girlfriend’s body Horry County Police allege that Linkous, who was 18 at the time and from Blue Rock, strangled Martin the evening of June 6 at the hotel they were staying at on Maison Drive. On June 6, after going to the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach, Linkous and Martin returned to their hotel room where they got into an argument because Martin was texting another guy, according to court testimony Monday. Linkous then manually strangled her. One of Ferrell’s friends called the morning of June 7 saying that Martin wasn’t breathing, Ferrell said in an interview in 2023. “A few hours later I received another call from a different friend that she was in fact dead,” Ferrell said. Linkous and Martin stopped using their phones at 10:17 p.m. Martin never used hers again. Linkous allegedly sat in a locked bedroom for hours with Martin’s dead body before coming out, having stabbed himself in the chest, Ferrell said. Ferrell did not go with the group to Myrtle Beach as she was playing in an all-star softball game in Florida. Natalie Martin and Blake Linkous were in a relationship and went on vacation in the Myrtle Beach, SC, area after graduating high school in Ohio. Linkous is accused of strangling Martin to death in a hotel room. Martin and Linkous had been a couple for several years until they broke up in February 2023, but the two had remained friends, Ferrell said. Ferrell claims that Martin was being abused by Linkous, which eventually led to their breakup. And although Ferrell hung out with Martin and Linkous often, she still wasn’t aware how serious the abuse was. “I thought I knew Blake well. Obviously not well enough,” Ferrell said. “Myself, (Natalie’s) parents and her friends really had no idea what she was going through and never suspected any of this to happen.” Ferrell isn’t sure what happened that night. “I know that they were having arguments down there a few days before, but I’m not sure if they were arguing that day or not,” she said. Eighteen-year-old Natalie Martin was in Myrtle Beach for a senior trip when she was killed in her hotel room. Another Ohio teenager has been charged with her *******. Martin’s obituary described the Roseville, Ohio, teen as a “free, pure and wild spirit with a contagious laugh. … She loved to hunt, shoot guns, fish, wrangle snakes, plant and nurture flowers, and could gut and skin a deer better than most grown men.” “I would like people to know that Natalie was just an 18-year-old girl who just graduated from high school,” Ferrell said. “I want other people who are like Natalie to know it is OK to reach out if you suspect anything or are going through any type of abuse. This does not just happen in movies or on TV shows. It can happen to anyone. This is real. “Domestic violence is a serious issue. It’s not something to joke about or take lightly. Look out for one another. Most importantly, hold your friends tight. 14. Firefly Blue Ghost Moon Lander Successfully Lands on Moon for NASA Mission Firefly Blue Ghost Moon Lander Successfully Lands on Moon for NASA Mission A significant milestone in space exploration has been reached with the successful landing of the Blue Ghost moon lander on the lunar surface. The spacecraft, developed by Firefly Aerospace, became the second privately built vehicle to execute a soft landing on the Moon. The mission, conducted in partnership with NASA, carried ten scientific experiments aimed at studying the lunar environment. Confirmation of the landing was received early on March 2, with images showcasing Earth visible above the Moon. Landing Sequence Executed as Planned According to reports, the descent was initiated at 2:30 a.m. EST with an engine burn to adjust the lander’s trajectory. Positioned at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometres before descent, the spacecraft was directed towards its pre-selected landing site within Mare Crisium, a volcanic plain on the Moon’s near side. Following a controlled descent lasting nearly an hour, the primary engine was deactivated, and the spacecraft switched to its reaction control system for fine adjustments. A boulder-free area was autonomously identified, and the final descent was executed, leading to a successful touchdown at 3:34 a.m. EST. NASA and Firefly Aerospace React to the Achievement Excitement over the success was expressed by officials, with the milestone being acknowledged as a major achievement. It was later confirmed by Firefly Aerospace that all phases of the landing had proceeded without complications, and the presence of lunar dust on the lander was noted. Scientific Goals and Future Observations The mission, named Ghost Riders in the Sky, is expected to operate for approximately 14 Earth days. Instruments onboard will analyse radiation levels, test new methods for lunar sample collection, and conduct additional studies beneficial for future Artemis missions. On March 14, high-definition footage of a total solar eclipse as viewed from the Moon’s surface is scheduled to be captured, with further observations planned until lunar sunset on March 16. Expanding Private Lunar Exploration As part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, the Blue Ghost lander is among several private missions aiming to expand lunar exploration capabilities. A $93 million contract had been awarded to Firefly Aerospace for this mission, with future landings expected in subsequent years. Other companies, including Intuitive Machines and ispace, are also preparing for lunar landings, further advancing commercial participation in space exploration. 16. Apple Appeals to Overturn *** Order to Remove Advanced Data Protection: Report Apple Appeals to Overturn *** Order to Remove Advanced Data Protection: Report Apple has appealed a British government order to create a “back door” in its most secure cloud storage systems, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The iPhone maker removed its most advanced security encryption for cloud data, called Advanced Data Protection (ADP), in Britain last month, in what was an unprecedented response to government demands for access to user data. That means Apple can access iCloud backups in certain cases that it otherwise could not, such as copies of iMessages, and hand it over to authorities if legally compelled. With end-to-end encryption enabled, even Apple could not access the data. Governments and tech giants have long been locked in a battle over strong encryption to protect consumers’ communications, which the authorities view as an obstacle to mass surveillance and crime fighting programs. But Britain’s demands are seen as particularly sweeping. US President Donald Trump last week likened the *** government’s demand to “something that you hear about with China,” in an interview with The Spectator political magazine. FT said Apple appealed against the order last month around the same time as it withdrew ADP from the ***, rather than comply with the technical capability notice it received from the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in January. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Apple declined to comment. A spokesperson for Britain’s Home Office declined to comment, but said that privacy “is only impacted on an exceptional basis in relation to the most serious crimes and only when it is necessary”. Reuters reported last week that US officials were investigating whether Britain violated a bilateral pact by reportedly pressuring Apple to create a “back door” for government access to encrypted cloud backups. The move could breach the CLOUD Act, which bars the *** from issuing demands for the data of US citizens and vice versa. © Thomson Reuters 2025 (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) 17. This ETF Saw Huge Inflows and Topped the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF in Assets This ETF Saw Huge Inflows and Topped the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF in Assets The oldest ETF, the SPDR S&P 500 Trust, had the most inflows in February. The $14.6 billion in inflows allowed it to surpass the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. Which ETFs saw the most outflows last month? This ETF brought in $14.6 billion in inflows in February, leading all ETFs. Just a few weeks ago, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSE:) became the largest exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the world after a surge in January and early February inflows pushed it past the long-reigning asset leader, the S&P 500 Trust ETF (NYSE:). But the SPDR S&P 500 Trust has retaken its title, according to ETF.com data, after a strong February, when it led all ETFs in inflows. The ETF.com report, authored by ETF.com senior analyst Sumit Roy, stated that SPY brought in $14.6 billion in assets in February, the most of any ETF. It was twice as much as the second-most popular ETF in February, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, which hauled in $7.3 billion last month. For SPY, this follows the month of January when it had some $13.5 billion in outflows, compared to $21.2 billion in inflows for VOO. Year-to-date, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF remains the asset leader, with $28.5 billion in inflows, according to ETF.com. The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:) is second YTD with $6.8 billion flowing in, buoyed by $4.6 billion in inflows in February, making it third overall. However, in terms of total assets under management (AUM), the SPDR S&P 500 ETF overtook the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, which had surpassed it last month. On the strength of its February haul, SPY had $624 billion in AUM as of the end of February, while VOO had $611 billion, according to ETF.com. The QQQ was third with roughly $318 billion, according to ETF.com data. The Biggest Losers in February The SPDR S&P 500 ETF was the first ETF ever launched in the United States when it debuted in 1994. It has been the largest ETF since then, except for last month when the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF briefly surpassed it. Asset totals shrank for these two leading ETFs over the past two weeks of February as the S&P 500, the index that both of these top ETFs track, had back-to-back negative weeks to end the month. The index dropped out concerns about tariffs, inflation, geopolitics, and a slowing economy. But overall, inflows were strong into ETFs in February, as investors seek more diversification amid volatile and uncertain markets. The industry brought in $110.8 billion in inflows, topping the $107 billion brought in in January. Through the first two months of 2025, some $217 billion has flowed into ETFs. It’s also worth noting that the SPDR Gold Trust ETF (NYSE:) had the fourth most inflows in the industry in February, bringing in $3.8 billion. That reflects the spike in the price of gold as investors flock to the relative safety and stability of gold ETFs. Finally, the ETF that saw the most outflows in February was the small-cap iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:), which experienced $3.5 billion in outflows last month. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:) saw the second-most outflows in February with $2.9 billion, while the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (NYSE:) was third with $1.4 billion in outflows, according to ETF.com. America is back. U.S.A.! U.S.A.! Remove this gentleman from the chamber. Once again, I look at the Democrats in front of me, and I realize there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy. The egg price is out of control. Pass tax cuts for everybody. They’re in there. They’re waiting for you to vote. Whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them. We’ve ended the tyranny of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion policies all across the entire federal government and, indeed, the private sector and our military. 23. Analysis-Sony, Suntory build U.S. stockpiles as Japan faces Trump tariff threat Analysis-Sony, Suntory build U.S. stockpiles as Japan faces Trump tariff threat By Tim Kelly, Kentaro Okasaka and Rocky Swift TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese electronics giant Sony and drinks maker Suntory are stockpiling inventory in the United States while their peers shift production or supply chains in efforts to fend off an evolving threat of U.S. tariffs on the export-reliant economy. In his latest trade salvo this week, President Donald Trump hinted that he might target Tokyo next, after throwing up new tariff barriers against Mexico and China, low-cost production hubs favoured by key Japanese industries, such as automakers. The scale of the tariff threat for Japan Inc has been further highlighted by Honda’s decision to produce a new model of one of its top-selling cars in the United States, instead of Mexico, Reuters exclusively reported on Monday. Japan Display, a major supplier of LCD screens to the auto industry, said it was also considering production of some items in the United States, partly to avoid tariffs, a move a recent survey showed is being considered by hundreds of peers. Major Japanese suppliers to iPhone maker Apple – Alps Alpine and Murata Manufacturing – are among other firms looking to insulate supply chains from escalating trade tension. “Corporates are now more aware that Japan could also be a target,” said Norihiro Yamaguchi, a senior economist at Oxford Economics. Yamaguchi pointed to Trump’s warning that the United States may use tariffs to offset any competitive disadvantage to its manufacturers if Japan and China do not stop reducing the value of their currencies. The protectionist U.S. president is set to levy reciprocal tariffs globally and industry-specific duties that could further hurt Japan, the world’s fourth largest economy, a top exporter to the United States and its biggest source of foreign investment. Japan has denied devaluing its currency and pledged U.S. investments to assuage Trump’s concerns on trade. Its trade minister is set to visit Washington as soon as next week to seek tariff exemptions, domestic media have said. Japanese companies are particularly exposed to trade duties as many have concentrated for decades on overseas sales, particularly to the United States, to counter weak domestic demand and a shrinking population, Yamaguchi said. Almost nine in 10 Japanese companies expect Trump’s policies to hurt business, a Reuters survey showed last month. Of these, 72% saw his trade strategy, including more tariffs, as the most detrimental factor, while 26% chose friction between the United States and China, Japan’s other major trading partner. Story Continues Even before accounting for tariffs that may target Tokyo, think tank the Daiwa Institute of Research projects that a trade war between the United States and other countries including China could shave 1.4% from Japan’s $4.2-trillion economy over two to three years. Stefan Angrick, a senior economist with Moody’s Analytics, said it was challenging to quantify the economic damage from tariffs as the business uncertainty they created could be more devastating than any direct impact. SHIFTING STRATEGIES More than 300 Japanese companies not yet operating in the United States have indicated they want to set up there, a survey by Japan’s export-promotion agency JETRO showed this month, up about 50% from the previous year. “Concerns about future U.S. tariff policies were frequently mentioned in our interviews,” said Hirotoshi Ito, an official involved in the survey, which did not identify the companies. Other firms had already begun stockpiling products. Sony Group President Hiroki Totoki told a press conference last month that the Playstation maker had been preparing for tariffs by building up inventory from its gaming and electronics divisions in the United States. A company spokesperson declined to provide details. Drinks giant Suntory said it had shipped tequila from its ******** brands to the United States in anticipation of tariffs of 25% imposed on Mexico and Canada on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the firm said it was also considering shifting sales of Scotch whiskies to Europe from the United States, while focusing on selling more American ******** in the U.S. to mitigate “more tariff war and ****-for-tat actions”. Other tariff response strategies have aimed at moving supply chains to try and avoid trade spats. Electronics component maker Alps Alpine said it was advancing a plan to return production to Japan that could help protect its business from tariffs imposed on third-party countries. Alps is a leading maker of smartphone camera actuators, tiny motors that essentially run a camera’s focusing system. It supplies Apple from factories in China, Japan and Malaysia, the iPhone maker’s latest supplier list shows. The firm said it now makes some items in Mexico for U.S. export that stand to be affected by tariffs. Another Apple supplier, Murata Manufacturing, said it was pushing ahead with efforts to “double-track” its supply chain. That involves making items in China for ******** customers only, and shipping products to the rest of the world from its plants in Japan and Thailand. Specialist talent is in high demand to help companies navigate the minefield of evolving global tariffs. Since Trump’s election in November, firms based in Japan have stepped up demand for tax managers and audit professionals, partly to chalk out tariff strategies and compliance, said Grant Torrens, Japan head for recruitment firm Hays. But more broadly among export-focused clients, the uncertainty has also fuelled a trend of lengthier decision-making about new hires. “Organisations are still wanting to pipeline for future hiring, but are cautious to bring in that talent now in case a larger decision is needed on relocating entire production facilities offshore to the United States,” he added. 25. Google Official Said to Have Revealed Android 16 Launch Timeline at MWC 2025; Could Release in June Google Official Said to Have Revealed Android 16 Launch Timeline at MWC 2025; Could Release in June Android 16, the next big operating system (OS) update for Android devices, will be released in June, according to a report. A company official reportedly revealed this information to a publication at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona. Notably, Google has a track record of releasing the next iteration of Android OS updates in August, but it could jump ahead of schedule with the release of Android 16 in June. Android 16 Release Timeline Speaking to Android Police at MWC 2025, Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google revealed that Android 16, along with other Android OS updates, are on track for early release this year. Citing challenges within the Android development team, the official highlighted that Google has adopted Trunk Stable development. Notably, it is a software branching model where designers frequently make small changes to the software’s code which is directly tied to a single shared branch. It is said to streamline the merging and integration phases during the development process, potentially speeding up the software’s release compared to the traditional feature-based development. The publication quoted the Google official as saying, “Trunk Stable development means that everyone working on Android is contributing to the same branch of code.” Despite Google only releasing the second developer beta of Android 16 so far, the update is said to be on schedule for a June 2025 release. According to previous reports, Android 16 is speculated to be moved to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on June 3, following which developers will be able to create custom variants of the OS catering to their respective devices and port it for the release. It corroborates the previously leaked timeline which suggested the second quarter of this year for its initial availability on Google Pixel smartphones. This development builds upon the recent release of the Android 16 Beta 2.1 update to developers and beta testers. While this version did not carry any new features, it brought fixes for crucial issues which impacted the device performance, including connectivity, system stability, and performance.
