  1. Nvidia’s shortages are limiting PC GPU market growth, looming tariffs also impacting sales Nvidia’s shortages are limiting PC GPU market growth, looming tariffs also impacting sales Over 78 million PC GPUs have been shipped in the last quarter of 2024, resulting in a 6.2% growth over the previous quarter. According to Jon Peddie Research, year-to-year GPU shipments across all platforms increased by 1% — broken down into a 2% increase in laptop GPU and a 3% decrease in desktop graphics card sales. The researchers predicted that the overall GPU market will shrink annually by 1% from 2024 to 2028, with only 15% of systems sporting a discrete GPU by 2030. The firm cited Nvidia shortages and looming tariffs as market pain points. Dr. Jon Peddie, the president of the team behind this report, said that Nvidia’s shortage hindered the growth of GPU shipments. “Nvidia, with the largest market share, had difficulty meeting demand and, as a result of their size and influence, kept the GPU market from growing as much as it might have. Although that will lead them and AMD into Q1 with a strong backlog, the tariffs will offset further gains for most, if not all, of 2025.” However, it seems that Nvidia still has trouble answering the demand for high-end (and even mid-range) GPUs, with almost all of its newly launched graphics cards — from the RTX 5090 all the way down to the RTX 5070 Ti — reportedly out-of-stock across retailers globally. Even Intel Arc B580 stock is hard to come by months after its release; we could only hope that the new AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and non-XT graphics cards are available in large numbers everywhere. The three major manufacturers — Nvidia, AMD, and Intel — share the GPU market, with Team Green owning 65% of the market, followed by AMD at 18%, and Intel at 16% (these values include the integrated GPUs found inside CPUs). AMD and Intel slightly grew from the last quarter, with the two companies gaining 1% and 0.8% from Nvidia. This tracks with the developments in the GPU space late last year, as Nvidia warned of a shortage in the fourth quarter of 2024 as it wound down production of 40-series GPUs to prepare for the upcoming Blackwell GPUs. This was compounded by the arrival of the much-anticipated Intel Arc B580 GPU, which provided gamers with a graphics card that offered decent performance at an affordable price. The report also made one surprising prediction: the contraction of the discrete GPU market. As we get more powerful graphics cards, one would expect more people to be hungry to get their hands on them. However, the increasing prices brought by paper launches, scalpers, and tariffs are probably turning off a lot of potential buyers. 4. Weekly mortgage demand surges 20% higher, after interest rates drop Weekly mortgage demand surges 20% higher, after interest rates drop Ryan Ratliff, center, real estate sales associate with Re/Max Advance Realty, shows Ryan Paredes, left, and Ariadna Paredes a home for ***** in Cutler Bay, Florida, on April 20, 2023. Joe Raedle | Getty Images A sharp drop in mortgage interest rates finally lit a fire under loan demand. Both current homeowners and potential homebuyers jumped back into the market, after a lackluster showing for this year so far. Total mortgage application volume jumped 20.4% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. This was not only the first increase in 3 weeks, but it is an outsized weekly move. Mortgage rates were clearly the culprit. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances, 806,500 or less, decreased to 6.73% from 6.88%, with points decreasing to 0.60 from 0.61 (including the origination fee) for loans with a 20% down payment. That is the lowest level since December 2024. “Mortgage rates declined last week on souring consumer sentiment regarding the economy and increasing uncertainty over the impact of new tariffs levied on imported goods into the U.S.,” said Joel Kan, an MBA economist in a release. “Those factors resulted in the largest weekly decline in the 30-year fixed rate since November 2024.” Applications to refinance a home loan, which are most sensitive to weekly moves in interest rates, jumped 37% for the week and were 83% percent higher than the same week one year ago. While the vast majority of borrowers today still have loans with rates well below what is being offered today, more recent buyers from the last two years are now able to benefit from a refinance. Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home rose 9% for the week but were still just 2% higher than the same week one year ago. “This is a ******* where we typically see purchase activity ramp up and purchase applications were up over the week and continued to run ahead of last year’s pace, more green shoots as we head into the spring homebuying season,” Kan added. While the weekly jump in purchase volume is certainly positive, it is still historically low. Buyers are up against high home prices, limited inventory and more uncertainty about the overall economy. The new tariffs levied on China, Canada and Mexico are widely expected to raise home prices, especially for new construction. Mortgage rates moved very slightly lower to start this week, according to a separate survey from Mortgage News Daily. Tuesday, when the tariffs went into effect, the stock and bond markets rode a roller coaster, with bond yields, which mortgage rates follow, dropping along with stocks. “As the day progressed, stocks and bonds bounced back in the other direction and the move was big enough for most mortgage lenders to reprice back toward slightly higher rates,” wrote Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily. 6. Photo of Elon Musk’s new gaming PC reveals odd component choices – is he rocking an RTX 4060? Photo of Elon Musk’s new gaming PC reveals odd component choices – is he rocking an RTX 4060? A recent photo of Elon Musk’s DOGE gaming PC at the White House is raising eyebrows. Tech reporter Kate Conger of the New York Times (h/t Polygon) shared an image of what appears to be a rather unbalanced RGB-infused build installed in the Secretary of War Suite in the Eisenhower Building. The preparations meant Musk could hit the ground running on Jan. 20. Lately, he's been working from the Secretary of War Suite in the Eisenhower Building, where he's installed a gaming PC. Here's what the setup looks like: [image or embed] — kate conger (@kateconger.com) February 28, 2025 at 11:05 PM Pixel peeping suggests that the tower system features a compact MSI-branded GPU, likely to be an RTX 4060 or 4070 model. Yet this Wi-Fi-connected PC is hooked up to a 49-inch Samsung Odyssey G9 dual-QHD display. Some might say this is a bit like putting a lawn mower engine in a muscle car. We don’t want to throw shade at the popular RTX 4060, or even 4070, though. Actually, these are looking like increasingly decent choices – at the right price – given the recent RTX 50 family reviews and the direction ‘Lackwell’ releases seem to be determined to follow. Rather, it is the incongruity of the richest man in the world’s gaming PC that tickles our PC DIY spider-senses. This machine has over 7.3 million pixels to push at native full-screen gaming (Samsung’s monitor packs in 5120 x 1440 pixels) and its duties as ‘the chainsaw for bureaucracy,’ so shouldn’t it be a bit beefier? Only yesterday, we published our in-depth RTX 5070 review. This new Nvidia card represents a step up from the RTX 4070-at-best DOGE PC. We didn’t test the new RTX 5070 at 4K (about 8.3 million pixels), though, as we judged QHD (2560 x 1440) to be the performance/quality sweet spot in modern titles. Of course, we don’t know how Musk uses this White House-situated PC to play games. He might play in windowed mode, with half of the screen dedicated to gaming, with the other featuring feeds relevant to DOGE operations – that would mean less strain on the GPU. Moreover, various reports suggest Musk favors a number of less hardware-intensive titles, like the titles he is known to play frequently, such as Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2. On the other hand, the special government employee is also known to have at least dabbled in Cyberpunk 2077, which can be very demanding at its highest quality settings. 8. 3 No-Brainer Bank Stocks to Buy Right Now for Less Than $500 3 No-Brainer Bank Stocks to Buy Right Now for Less Than $500 Bank stocks as a category aren’t usually high-growth investment vehicles. When individuals look to buy bank stocks, it’s usually with their stability and, perhaps, a dividend in mind. However, not every bank stock is reliable, and not every bank stock is a slow grower. If you’re looking for some great bank stocks, I recommend Ally (NYSE: ALLY), which is your reliable dividend-paying bank stock, as well as Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU) and SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI), which are both excellent growth stocks. Ally is a stock pick of investment legend Warren Buffett, and it’s easy to see why. It has a strong role in the American economy as the top prime auto lender, and it has roots that are a century old as the financial arm of General Motors. Buffett loves old, established companies, and he loves banks. But it’s not just an old company. It launched an all-digital bank — the largest in the U.S. That puts it firmly in the fintech camp and gives it tons of growth potential. As of the end of 2024, it has reached $143 billion in consumer retail deposits with a 95% consumer retention rate. It’s a compelling mix of old and new, providing security and new opportunities. It also pays an attractive dividend that yields 3.3% at the current price, an important feature for Buffett, and it appears to be undervalued stock, another feature Buffett is known for appreciating. It trades at a P/E ratio of 14 and a price-to-book ratio of 0.9. Ally could be an excellent value pick for investors looking for a solid bank stock. Nu is an all-digital bank that’s headquartered in Brazil and also operates in Mexico and Colombia. It’s constantly adding millions of customers and growing at incredible rates, and it has a huge growth runway between adding more members, cross-selling new products, and entering new regions. Revenue increased 50% year over year in the 2024 fourth quarter, and net income increased from $360.9 million to $552.6 million. Average revenue per active customer (ARPAC), which tracks the cross-selling component, increased 23% (currency neutral) year over year to $10.70. That’s even more impressive because it adds so many new members. It also has a full line of credit products that are demonstrating strong performance. Loan originations increased 84% year over year in the fourth quarter, and the interest-earning portfolio was up 57%. Nu has lost some market confidence recently since Berkshire Hathaway sold more than half of its shares in the fourth quarter, and investors are concerned about he devaluation of the Brazilian real. The stock is flat over the past year, and it’s an excellent time to scoop up shares. Story Continues Continuing the trend on this list, SoFi is an all-digital U.S. bank that’s young and fast growing. It’s reporting high sales and earnings increases, and it continues to attract new members at a high rate. It ended 2024 with 10.1 million members, a 34% increase over last year, and 14.7 million products, a 32% increase. Cross-selling is an important element of its growth strategy, and it has expanded over the past few years beyond its core lending segment to ease some of the risk associated with being only a lender as well as generate more growth opportunities. The financial services segment, which is all non-lending services for individual accounts, has been a star, increasing 84% year over year in the 2024 fourth quarter. Investors have been worried about the lending segment last year, but it ended up surpassing management’s expectations, and lending segment revenue increased 18% year over year in the fourth quarter. All of the company’s segments are growing, and as interest rates start coming down, SoFi is well-positioned for a strong 2025. Even better, it’s poised to become a real player in banking long-term, with management aiming to become a “top 10” U.S. bank, and investing now could pay off later in a big way. 10. Co-op unlawfully blocked 100 rival store openings Co-op unlawfully blocked 100 rival store openings Jennifer Meierhans Business reporter, BBC News Co-op The Co-op has admitted to unlawfully blocking more than 100 rival supermarkets from opening branches near to its stores. The ***’s competition watchdog found Co-op had breached an order which limits supermarkets’ ability to prevent nearby land being used by rival retailers. Blocking other grocers from opening nearby hits competition between supermarkets and means shoppers have less choice when trying to get cheaper prices, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said. A spokesperson for Co-op, said: “This is a matter we take very seriously, and we have taken all necessary action to ensure this issue is resolved and does not happen again.” The Co-op admitted 107 breaches of the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010. It has re-written 104 agreements and agreed to resolve three others, the CMA said. It released a list of the 107 locations. The Co-op’s spokesperson added: “As a business that is committed to operating fairly, we recognise this is extremely disappointing.” The Co-op owns almost 2,400 stores across the *** and holds a 5.2% market share in the ***’s £190.9bn supermarket industry, according to the CMA. The chain said the number of breaches amounted to “less than 2% of transactions” across its property portfolio, which includes its supermarkets and ******** directors. Many of the ***’s biggest supermarkets have also breached the land order in recent years, but not to the extent that Co-op was found to in the CMA’s latest action. 12. Tesla’s *** sales rise despite threat of backlash over Musk’s political role | Tesla Tesla’s *** sales rise despite threat of backlash over Musk’s political role | Tesla Sales of Teslas in the *** rose by more than a fifth last month as demand for battery-powered cars increased, despite the prospect of a buyer backlash over Elon Musk’s controversial and divisive behaviour since becoming a key figure in Donald Trump’s administration. Almost 4,000 Teslas were sold in the *** in February, with the Model 3 and Model Y proving the second and third most popular after the Mini Cooper, according to the latest new car registration figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Sales of Teslas were up 20.7% year on year, lifting the company’s market share from 3.75% in February 2024 to 4.6% last month, suggesting Musk’s actions have not yet hurt the electric vehicle maker in the ***. The overall market declined by 1%, with 84,054 new registrations. The SMMT said that sales of full electric vehicles rose almost 42% year on year, accounting for a quarter of all new registrations, because buyers are seeking to beat a new tax on expensive cars that comes into force in April and will affect many EVs for the first time. There has been some evidence that Musk’s interventions in European political affairs and his senior role in Trump’s administration is leading to a consumer backlash by some Tesla owners or prospective buyers. The tech billionaire and close Trump adviser has shown support for Germany’s far-right AfD party, theatrically brandished a “chainsaw of democracy” at a conservative conference, and accused Keir Starmer and other senior politicians of covering up the scandal about grooming gangs. Sales of new Tesla cars almost halved in Europe in January, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, pushing the carmaker’s market share down to 1%. In China, early numbers for February indicate a 49% fall in exports and retail sales, although analysts say this is likely affected by Tesla’s Model Y changeover as it looks to give the model an updated design. Analysts at Morgan Stanley attributed the weaker sales to a “buyers’ strike”. After jumping after Trump’s election win, Tesla’s market value has now dropped back to levels seen at the US presidential election in November, although overall the company’s shares currently remain up 45% over the last year. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the SMMT, warned against reading too much into the ***’s February figures, given it is the smallest month of the year for new car registrations. “The good news is that electric car uptake is increasing, albeit at huge cost to manufacturers in terms of market support,” Hawes said. “It is always dangerous, however, to draw conclusions from a single month, especially one as small and volatile as February.” Source link #Teslas #sales #rise #threat #backlash #Musks #political #role #Tesla Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  13. Tariffs could impact ‘most of the retail industry’ through 2025 Tariffs could impact ‘most of the retail industry’ through 2025 The retail sector is facing challenges as tariffs on imports, particularly from Mexico, could increase prices for everyday items. Forrester Research retail analyst Sucharita Kodali joins Wealth host Madison Mills to explain the broader impact of these tariffs on the retail industry. “There’s question that it’s going to affect most of the retail industry through 2025, especially if there isn’t any clarity that companies have as to if these tariffs are going to happen for an indefinite ******* of time, or if simply they’re political theater,” Kodali says. She explains that if the tariffs are related to more immediate concerns, like immigration, they could eventually be lifted. She also points out that consumer sentiment has been low for some time. “As long as inflation is over that 2% mark, as long as interest rates are higher than what consumers expect, that consumer sentiment’s probably not going to recover,” Kodali adds. AMD RX 9070 could struggle to compete with Nvidia 50-series GPUs according to latest tech demo AMD RX 9070 could struggle to compete with Nvidia 50-series GPUs according to latest tech demo AMD released a new path tracing demo running on RX 9000 hardware Some PC gamers have cited muddy textures, blurriness, and artifacting It’s created a wider discussion on RDNA 4’s price-to-performance An official path tracing demo published on AMD Gaming’s YouTube channel has revealed that the RDNA 4 graphics cards fall behind what’s possible with rival Nvidia’s RTX 50 series regarding price-to-performance. AMD published the Toyshop real-time path tracing neural rendering tech demo, which has highlighted the impressive capabilities of the RX 9070 XT, considering its sub-$600 MSRP. However, this is when taking the 75-second video in isolation, while some tech enthusiasts and concerned gamers have made comparisons with Nvidia’s latest. As spotted by Notebookcheck, some dissenting voices have claimed that this RX 9000 series path tracing benchmark is marred with blurry textures and visual artifacts, with the impressive lighting effects becoming problematic during faster moments. A particular concern has arisen regarding how the RTX 9070 XT handles AI-powered supersampling and how the noise reduction is implemented when cleaning the overall image up. Specifically, attention has been placed on the cars driving along the street, as visual artifacts are reportedly present, as the static buildings get fuzzy and the foliage becomes blurred when you look a little closer. This is (seemingly) without factoring in the built-in compression that comes with YouTube as a video hosting platform. Toyshop Realtime Path Tracing Neural Rendering Tech Demo – YouTube Watch On Meanwhile, numerous comments on the r/pcgaming sub-Reddit are blunter with their criticisms. The top-voted comment simply reads: “The ghosting on the robot arms is pretty agregious”, with another stating: “That’s a lot of noise”, and a longer response from another user arguing: “What’s the point of releasing a demo with crazy noise, ghosting, and every RT-releated artifacts possible. It’s not going to awe anybody, it just just shows how far behind Nvidia they are”. It opens a wider dialog about just how good at path tracing a $600 graphics card really has to be, with the RX 9070 XT retailing for the same price as the newly arriving Nvidia RTX 5070, itself not without controversy. Our review of the weakest Blackwell GPU noted near-identical performance with the previous mainstream leader, the RTX 4070 Super from January 2024, with the obvious exception of DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation; the feature is less-than-stellar here than on the company’s flagship models. Similarly, we (seemingly) get to see the limitations of FSR 4 against DLSS 4 with noise reduction and AI-assisted path tracing in lower-end hardware. The results are certainly impressive on the surface, but looking closer, some PC gamers fear that if this is AMD’s best foot forward, then it still has a lot of catching up to do. For direct comparison, you can see Nvidia’s official Zorah rendering tech demo, which had not received anywhere the same level of backlash when it debuted in January 2025. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. An early sign of things to come for AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU generation It’s there’s one thing that’s apparent with the two announced (and soon to be released) AMD RX 9000 series graphics cards, and it’s that they’re marketed on their value proposition rather than the raw performance power. While native 4K is targeted according to the marketing material, and the company is showcasing a renewed focus on path and ray tracing in gaming, the manufacturer clearly isn’t trying to compete with what its major rival can do at the higher-end. The RX 9070 XT will retail from $599, whereas the RX 9070 will sell for $549, which roughly equates their respective pricing with the RTX 5070. That means Team Red isn’t swinging for the fences with a $1,000+ or $2,000+ graphics card option, such as Nvidia’s RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, respectively, which can outpace everything RDNA can but (consequently) cost double or more. As a result, how bad is it to see real-time path tracing not quite living up to GPUs costing double (or even triple) the MSRP here? That’s something suggested by gamers; a little noise and fuzziness in the inception of AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU generation compared to its best-in-class rivals doesn’t seem like too big a deal, given the sticker price. Whether the trade-off is worth it for you will ultimately depend on what you want a $600 graphics card to do in 2025. Is it something that’s nice to have or an essential feature for the future of PC gaming? Depending on your answer, you’ll know which card is for you. 18. ‘Students are under attack.’ Ohio State students and faculty rally against controversial bill ‘Students are under attack.’ Ohio State students and faculty rally against controversial bill Pranav Jani, president of the Ohio State chapter of AAUP, speaks out against Senate Bill 1 during a protest at Ohio State on March 4, 2025. (Photo by Megan Henry, Ohio Capital Journal). Hundreds of Ohio State students, faculty, staff and alumni protested against a massive bill that would dramatically change higher education across the state Tuesday afternoon. More than a dozen speakers touched on the various aspects of Ohio Senate Bill 1 during the protest, which lasted more than three hours and was organized by the Ohio Student Association. Ohio State’s rally was part of a statewide day of action against S.B.1, said protest organizers. “Students are under attack,” said Brielle Shorter, a junior at Ohio State. Ohio S.B. 1, which has been passed by the state Senate and is now in the Ohio House’s hands, would ban diversity and inclusion efforts, block faculty from striking, set rules around classroom discussion, put diversity scholarships at risk, shorten university board of trustees terms from nine years down to six years, and require students take an American history course, among other things. Regarding classroom discussion, it would set rules around topics involving “controversial beliefs” such as climate policies, electoral politics, foreign policy, diversity and inclusion programs, immigration policy, marriage, or abortion. S.B. 1, which only applies to public colleges, stipulates classroom discussion allows students to “reach their own conclusions about all controversial beliefs or policies and shall not seek to indoctrinate any social, political, or religious point of view.” “This bill would change everything about what education is, and it would gut all your professors’ rights to have job security, to have union power, to have bargaining power,” said Rachel Coyle, with Honesty for Ohio Education. “It would make it so your professors couldn’t get tenure. They would not be able to strike if they’re full-time. This would make it so hard to be a professor that all the best … would leave.” SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX The Ohio Senate passed S.B. 1 last month. Bill sponsor Sen. Jerry Cirino, R-Kirtland, testified in front of the House Higher Education and Workforce Committee while Tuesday’s protest took place. Joel Wainwright, a professor in Ohio State’s geography department, said it’s likely the Ohio House will pass S.B. 1, which will send the bill to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s desk for him to sign it into law. “What we are playing for, strategically speaking, right now is a veto from Gov. DeWine,” he said. “If you want to convince Republicans to veto this bill, you have got to get really good at talking about the negative economic consequences.” If S.B. 1 passed, he said many of Ohio State’s best faculty would leave for the private sector, private universities “or the country of Canada.” “If even 5% or 10% of our best faculty leave, then guess what? The federal research dollars they bring to this university leave too,” Wainwright said. This bill would chill professors and researchers, said Jill Galvan, an executive board member of the Ohio State chapter of the American Association of University Professors. “It would degrade the quality of education in the state that would make it harder for us to hire good people in fields across disciplines, medicine, law, history, philosophy, English, social work, you name it,” she said. Chants of “Shame on you, OSU” and “S.B. 1 is a war on people. Censorship should be ********” regularly broke out during the rally and rang across the Oval on Ohio State’s campus. “We have an unwavering commitment to freedom of speech, and we support the right of students, faculty, staff and others to exercise their freedom of expression,” Ohio State University Spokesperson Ben Johnson said in an email when asked about Tuesday’s protest. State Rep. Munira Abdullahi, D-Columbus, reassured those at the rally that she is here for students, faculty, and staff. (Photo by Megan Henry, Ohio Capital Journal). “S.B. 1 is … trying to ruin your futures,” she said. “Shame on the universities who are pre-complying to these horrible, horrible bills that are coming out.” President of the Ohio Federation of Teachers Melissa Cropper talked about the labor aspects of the bill. “Senate Bill 1 not only takes away the right to strike on campuses where there is a right to strike, but also limits what could be collectively bargained,” she said. “That means it takes away from people their rights to have a voice in what their workplace looks like and what their salaries are and all those other kinds of things that are important to making a workplace a place where you want to be.” Corinne Sugino, an assistant professor in Ohio State’s English Department, called S.B. 1 a dangerous attack. “How can I expect my students to stand up for themselves and what they believe in, if they see us being muzzled?” Sugino said. This is not the first time S.B. 1 has received an outpouring of opposition. More than 800 people submitted opponent testimony against the bill — significantly outweighing the amount of supporter testimony the bill has received. Several students have said they would leave Ohio if this bill passed. Even though the protest was scheduled beforehand, Tuesday’s protest came less than a week after Ohio State closed its Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Student Life’s Center for Belonging and Social Change. Sixteen professional staff positions will be eliminated. “These attacks and the bending to the need of the attacks in higher education are unacceptable,” said Sabrina Durso, president of the Council of Graduate Students. Last week was the deadline for schools to comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s Dear Colleague letter that threatened to rescind federal funds for schools that use race-conscious practices in admissions, programming, training, hiring, scholarships, and other aspects of student life. Credit to Bad Guitar Studio Fragpunk’s console release date has been delayed indefinitely until an unspecified date. The news has shocked players waiting to gear up for Fragpunk on PlayStation and Xbox. The March 6 release date is only happening for PC players now, and the developer has neglected to reveal so much as a vague release window to look forward to. Why Has Fragpunk’s Console Release Date Been Delayed? Developer Bad Guitar Studio provided an update on March 4 to explain the delay was due to “console compliance testing” issues. The explanation came via a March 4 post on the team’s official X social media page. “During the console compliance testing process, we encountered unexpected technical challenges in optimization and adaptation. Rather than rushing the console release and providing a potentially poor user experience, we have made the difficult decision to delay the launch of the console versions to ensure that players receive a comparable experience to those on PC.” Unfortunately, no update or timeframe is provided for a Fragpunk console release. All that’s promised is the “Team is working closely with both the Xbox and PlayStation teams to get Fragpunk into your hands as soon as possible.” A message from FragPunk team about the delay of the launch on console platforms: Console players who jumped on board early will be compensated at least. Players can claim a ton of engagement rewards, refunds, in-game currency, and much more. Are you a disappointed PlayStation or Xbox user who was looking forward to Fragpunk’s console release? 23. Germany’s Merz promises to do ‘whatever it takes’ on defence Germany’s Merz promises to do ‘whatever it takes’ on defence Friedrich Merz, who’s expected to become Germany’s next chancellor, has announced a political deal to raise hundreds of billions of euros in extra spending on defence and infrastructure. “In view of the threats to our freedom and peace on our continent, the rule for our defence now has to be ‘whatever it takes’,” he said. Merz, whose conservatives won Germany’s election last month, said he and his likely coalition partners from the centre left would put new proposals to parliament next week. He has spoken of a need for urgency on ******* spending in light of “recent decisions by the American government”. Merz, 69, did not elaborate but he has been outspoken in his criticism of President Donald Trump’s treatment of Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. Earlier this week he said European leaders had to show “we are in a position to act independently in Europe”. At a news conference on Tuesday, alongside leaders from the Social Democrats and his conservative sister party in Bavaria, Merz said Germany was counting on the US to stand by “mutual alliance commitments… but we also know that the resources for our national and alliance defence must now be significantly expanded”. Merz said, in English, he would do “whatever it takes” to protect freedom and peace – a reference to Mario Draghi’s vow to save the euro in 2012 when he was European Central Bank president. At the heart of his proposals is a special €500bn (£415bn) fund to repair Germany’s creaking infrastructure, as well as loosening stringent budget rules to allow investment in defence. In the wake of Europe’s financial crisis, Germany imposed a “debt brake” or Schuldenbremse, limiting the budget deficit to 0.35% of national economic output (GDP) in normal times. The new defence proposal recommends that “necessary defence spending” above 1% of GDP should be exempt from debt brake restrictions, with no upper limit. Although Germany has provided more aid to Ukraine than any other European country, its military is notoriously underfunded. Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrat-led government set up a €100bn fund after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but most of that has already been allocated. Germany will have to find an extra €30bn a year just to meet the current Nato target of 2% of GDP on defence, and security experts believe it will need to raise its target closer to 3%. Scholz was due to meet Friedrich Merz and Social Democrat leaders on Wednesday on the eve of an EU summit devoted to Ukraine and European defence. His government fell apart late last year because the three parties in coalition could not agree to reforming debt restrictions. The debt brake has been written into Germany’s constitution, or Basic Law, and any change would require a two-thirds majority in parliament, which is not a foregone conclusion because of the large number of seats held by the far-right AfD and the Left party. However, the new parliament will not convene until late March and this measure will initially go before the old parliament. Boris Pistorius, the Social Democrat defence minister in the outgoing government, said the spending plans were a “big, important step” even if they were far from being a coalition deal. Ten days after Germany’s elections, the parties are taking part in exploratory talks, which continue on Thursday. Pistorius told ******* TV that removing defence from national debt rules was not about armaments as much as “the security of our country – nothing more, nothing less”. Social Democrat leader Lars Klingbeil, standing alongside Merz on Tuesday, gave details of the plan to re-invest in ******* infrastructure, saying: “Our country is wearing itself out.” Loans of €500bn would go into a fund to cover repairs to roads, railways and other critical infrastructure; €100bn of the money would go to Germany’s 16 federal states, with a loosening of the debt brake to allow the states to rack up small amounts of debt too. 24. 20,000-Year-Old Transport Marks in New Mexico Reveal Early American Mobility 20,000-Year-Old Transport Marks in New Mexico Reveal Early American Mobility Marks resembling sled-like tracks alongside footprints at White Sands National Park in New Mexico suggest that wooden travois-style transport was used by the earliest known Americans over 20,000 years ago. Researchers studying the site believe that ancient inhabitants of the region utilised wooden poles bound together to drag goods and possibly people across the landscape. Indigenous knowledge and experimental archaeology indicate that these marks likely originated from a rudimentary form of transport, which predates the use of wheels. Findings from White Sands National Park According to the study published in Quaternary Science Advances, drag marks extending up to 50 metres were identified alongside human footprints. The marks varied in form, with some appearing as single lines—suggesting an A-shaped structure—while others showed two parallel lines, indicative of an X-shaped design. The study’s lead author, Matthew Bennett, Professor of Environmental and Geographical Sciences at Bournemouth University, stated in an official press release that these traces provide the first direct evidence of how early humans transported heavy loads. Comparison with Indigenous Practices Indigenous groups from the Great Plains, including parts of present-day New Mexico, historically used similar structures to transport homes and belongings. These were initially pulled by dogs and later by horses after European contact. The study’s findings suggest that similar methods may have been employed thousands of years earlier, with adults pulling the travois while children walked alongside. Co-author Sally Reynolds, a mammalian palaeontologist at Bournemouth University, said that understanding ancient movement patterns is key to reconstructing the lives of early settlers in the Americas. Testing the Travois Theory To verify the hypothesis, researchers constructed travois replicas using wooden poles and tested them in muddy terrains in the *** and the US. The resulting marks closely resembled those found at White Sands. These tests reinforced the idea that prehistoric people likely used similar methods to transport goods across harsh environments. Implications for Early American History Previous research at White Sands has dated human footprints at the site to between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago, challenging earlier estimates of human arrival in North America. While some scholars debate these dates, the presence of drag marks alongside footprints remains a significant indicator of early transport methods. The study highlights an ancient yet sophisticated means of mobility long before the advent of the wheel.
