iOS 18.4 Beta 2 Update for iPhone Brings Apple Intelligence-Powered Review Summaries to App Store
iOS 18.4 Beta 2 Update for iPhone Brings Apple Intelligence-Powered Review Summaries to App Store
iOS 18.4 Beta 2 update was released for iPhone developers and testers on Monday. The update brings much-awaited visual intelligence features to compatible smartphones. It also includes another artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will enable users to quickly understand the overall summary of apps and games in the App Store. Dubbed Review Summaries, the feature will be part of the Apple Intelligence suite, and will be available in all devices that support the technology. Alongside, the App Store now also supports natural language search queries.
Apple Adds New AI Feature to App Store
According to the tech giant, the iOS 18.4 Beta 2 update is adding a new Apple Intelligence feature to the App Store. Review Summaries essentially compile information from individual reviews left by users on an app or a game to create a comprehensive summary. Such review summaries will enable users to quickly get an idea about the app without having to spend hours scrolling through the reviews.
The iPhone maker highlighted that the AI tool picks highlights and key information from each user review, and then uses large language models (LLMs) to generate the summary. Apple did not mention the AI models being used to power this feature. To help users understand that this is an AI-generated content, each summary will be underlined with the text “Automatically summarised from reviews.”
Review Summaries will be refreshed at least once a week, the company stated. However, these will only appear for apps and games that have enough reviews to support generating a summary. Apple did not reveal any minimum threshold of reviews the apps need to reach to enable the feature.
Notably, the AI feature is being rolled out in a phased manner, and currently it is only available in the English language for a limited number of apps and games on the App Store. It is also only available to users in the US. Apple highlighted that Review Summaries will be expanded to all apps with sufficient number of reviews over the year. The company will also add the summaries in additional languages and other storefronts.
Additionally, with this update, Apple is also adding natural language search capability to the App Store. Users will be able to search for apps and games using their description, features, or functionality, and the AI will find the relevant results. This feature is also available in English for a limited number of apps and games in the US.

US ‘destroying’ world order, Ukraine’s ambassador to the *** says
US ‘destroying’ world order, Ukraine’s ambassador to the *** says
The US is “destroying” the established world order, Ukraine’s ambassador to the *** has said.
Criticising the new Trump administration’s way of handling foreign policy, Valerii Zaluzhnyi said the White House had “questioned the unity of the whole Western world”.
His comments come amid an apparent cooling of tensions between Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and his US counterpart Donald Trump, after a public falling-out between the two in the Oval Office on Friday.
Kyiv has made attempts to mend relations with Washington in recent days, after the US paused its military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing in a bid to bring Zelensky to the negotiating table.
But Mr Zaluzhnyi’s remarks at a conference at Chatham House in London on Thursday suggest there remains discontent over the US’s actions.
He told an audience: “We see that it is not just the axis of evil and Russia trying to revise the world order, but the US is finally destroying this order.”
The Ukrainian envoy added that talks between the US and Russia – the latter of which was “headed by a war criminal” in President Vladimir Putin – showed the White House was making “steps towards the Kremlin, trying to meet them halfway”.
Mr Zaluzhnyi, who took over as Kyiv’s ambassador to London in 2024 following three years as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, also suggested that Nato could cease to exist as a result of Washington’s change in posture, and warned that Moscow’s next target “could be Europe”.
While Zelensky has expressed a wish to bring the war in Ukraine to an end swiftly, Kyiv has expressed concerns about the Trump administration’s handling of talks and the concessions to Moscow that may be made without security guarantees for Ukraine.
Trump vowed during the US election campaign to bring the war to an end quickly, and a US delegation met with a Russian one for preliminary talks in Saudi Arabia last month – without European or Ukrainian representatives present.
Following that, Zelensky accused Trump of living in a “disinformation space” after the US president repeated some of Moscow’s claims – including that Ukraine was responsible for starting the war – prompting the latter to call Zelensky a “dictator”.
The US’s decision to halt its assistance to Ukraine has been cast by Trump administration officials as a means of getting Kyiv to co-operate with the US-led peace talks.
The pause was welcomed by the Kremlin, while it has raised concerns that Ukraine may only be able to hold out for a matter of months.
Zelensky has since made conciliatory overtures to Trump, without mentioning the US security guarantees he previously said were necessary to prevent further Russian aggression. Trump said he appreciated Zelensky’s remarks.
Mr Zaluzhnyi said the pause in intelligence sharing, as well as an earlier decision to oppose a UN resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine, were “a huge challenge for the entire world”.

Xbox’s latest system update for Xbox Insiders is removing their user profiles
Xbox’s latest system update for Xbox Insiders is removing their user profiles
Players signed up to the Xbox Insider programme are reporting issues with the latest system update.
Participants signed up to the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead tiers of the Xbox Insider programme – which lets them download system updates before anyone else to help with testing and troubleshooting – are having their profiles removed.
VGC is signed up to the Alpha tier and can confirm the same thing happened on our Xbox Series X console.
While the latest firmware version was added as an optional download on Wednesday, this became a mandatory download at 6am ET / 11am GMT today.
After the update was downloaded and installed, rather than simply updating the system software and rebooting to the Xbox dashboard as usual, our console instead loaded the initial setup procedure that runs when the console is used for the first time.
We had to add our Xbox profile and sign into it again, and follow the various other display and account setup steps before we were able to return to the dashboard.
At this point, while our previously installed games were still present on the console and hadn’t been deleted, all our other settings such as wallpaper, system settings, recently played games and Quick Resume data had been removed.
After installing the Alpha tier update, our Xbox deleted our user profile. When we performed the initial setup again, our wallpaper, recent games and other settings had been removed.
Other Xbox Insider members have been sharing similar issues on X and Reddit. “Xbox Support, are you joking me,” read one user’s tweet. “I got a 5GB Xbox update, which put my console back to factory settings. Now I’ve lost all my Xbox profiles, you’re joking.”
“Came home to my Xbox today after work and found my console had factory reset itself after it automatically downloaded update 2504.250227-2200,” wrote another user on Reddit. “Biggest bug I’ve ever seen release in all my years of being in the preview program.”
“I just had same issue on my second boot after applying the update,” added another. “All my games and apps were safe, the My Games & Apps section just had to re-populate the library, which only took a minute. It does mean losing some settings though, which was slightly annoying.”
The update also seemingly logs users out of all their media apps on the console, meaning they’ll have to log in again before being able to use them.
According to Xbox’s patch notes, the latest update is supposed to do the following:
Profile
Fixed an issue where viewing your own profile would appear as if viewing another user’s profile unintentionally, offering none of the expected customization options.
TV & Display Options
Fixed an issue where the console would not correctly detect support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision for Gaming when connected to certain TV models, and playing Dolby Vision content would instead fall back to HDR10.
System
Various updates to properly reflect local languages across the console.

Scientists want to poke me where, with a what?
Scientists want to poke me where, with a what?
Feedback is New Scientist’s popular sideways look at the latest science and technology news. You can submit items you believe may amuse readers to Feedback by emailing *****@*****.tld
A sensitive topic
Feedback reads a lot of academic articles, and we are often distressed by their titles, which can be not so much meandering and unclear as digressive and circumlocutory. The only things worse are the ones that preface the academese with an allegedly humorous pop culture reference.
However, sometimes we run across research whose title is brisk and to the point. We are fond of the 2000 structural biology paper “The ribosome is a ribozyme“, which is an absolute model of efficiency (assuming you know what the two nouns mean). And then there is a February paper on bioRxiv brought to our attention by New Scientist contributor Chris Simms, titled “The coarse mental map of the breast is anchored on the nipple“.
That may, perhaps, need a bit of context. Some parts of the human body are more sensitive to touch than others. The face – especially the lips – and the tips of our fingers are highly sensitive, while our backs are much less so.
This is one of those classic experiments you can do at home. Get a chopstick or some other blunt tool and gently poke a willing partner. You will find that they can tell if you move the location of successive pokes, even by mere millimetres, if you poke them on the lips or fingertips. But if you poke them on the back, they will be terrible at determining whether you moved it. This is because your back has fewer touch-sensitive nerves there.
The authors of this new preprint spotted a gap in the literature. “While tactile acuity has been extensively studied on the limbs and face, acuity on the torso has received far less experimental attention… with the breast being largely ignored,” they write.
Let’s not drag out the suspense. It turns out breasts have very low tactile acuity, even worse than backs. Apparently, “touches needed to be between 3 and 4 times as far apart on the breast than on the hand to yield equivalent location discrimination performance”.
Feedback isn’t sure if this is quite what Caroline Criado Perez had in mind when she wrote Invisible Women, documenting the myriad ways women have been excluded from scientific research. But, as a piece of basic information, it seems like it might have its uses.
Feedback’s main takeaway is that we would like to have been a fly on the wall for the recruitment process. “You want to do what to my what with what?”
An even longer word
Back in early November 2024, Feedback was running a bit short of material due to a brief hiatus (long since over) in global idiocy, so we padded the column with a torrent of increasingly long words – or, as we said at the time, we engaged in sesquipedalianism.
Except it turns out we did it wrong. Francis Wenban-Smith wrote in to point out our mistake: “you were 2 letters short in your attempt to pad out your column with ‘floccinaucinihipilification’. The correct word is: ‘floccinaucinihilipilification’.”
If you can’t see the difference between those two blizzards of letters – and we wouldn’t blame you, because we evidently couldn’t – the second has an extra “li” just before the “pili”. Feedback would like to assure readers we have been given a stern talking-to.
In the process of confirming that we had indeed misspelled floccinaucinihilipilification, Feedback entered the two versions into a popular search engine. The correct version brought up a dictionary entry as the highlighted response. The incorrect version brought up our article (how embarrassing), above which was an AI summary of the fake word. Here are the opening lines:
“Floccinaucinihipilification is a long word that means to regard something as worthless or trivial. It was the longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary until 1982. Floccinaucinihipilification is a 29-letter word with 12 syllables. It contains nine i’s but no e’s.”
Readers who can count to 29, unlike the AI, will notice that all those claims about the number of letters and syllables are wrong, bar the one about the letter e. Feedback is proud to have contributed, in our own small way, to the ongoing pollution of the information ecosystem.
Unsafe dating
Like so much else in life, dating is becoming micro-targeted. You can still use huge apps like Tinder, but there is also a growing proliferation of ever-more-niche dating sites.
Perhaps the nichest of all is Unjected, aimed at those not vaccinated against covid-19. Or, to be more precise: “While we do not support vaccination of any kind, Unjected is specifically tailored for Covid-19 unvaccinated or any mRNA based injection.”
As technology analyst Benedict Evans put it on Threads: “Someone built a whole company around the Darwin Awards“.
Feedback has a lot of questions about Unjected, the most pressing of which is: how does the company decide who can join? Perhaps this is so basic it doesn’t need saying, but you can’t prove a negative.
Scouring the site’s FAQs, we found the answer: “Since the beginning, Unjected has believed the healthiest realtionships [sic] have a foundation of trust, and we have operated on an honor system. However, for our members who want the most safety and security in choosing their future partner, we recommend our ‘Unjected Verified’ upgrade. Unjected verified members attest to their unvaccination by affidavit.” Love, like SARS-CoV-2, is in the air.
Got a story for Feedback?
You can send stories to Feedback by email at *****@*****.tld. Please include your home address. This week’s and past Feedbacks can be seen on our website.

An air force bombing drill with South Korean F-16s just ended in disaster
An air force bombing drill with South Korean F-16s just ended in disaster
South Korea’s military said its KF-16s accidentally discharged eight bombs on a village on Thursday.
The 500-pound MK-82 bombs injured 15 people in Pocheon, the military said.
Initial military findings indicate that a pilot put in the wrong coordinates for the bombing run.
South Korea’s fighter jets accidentally bombed its own civilians during a live-fire drill on Thursday, Seoul’s military said.
At around 10 a.m. Thursday local time, two KF-16 fighters dropped eight 500-pound MK-82 bombs on the village of Pocheon, South Korea’s air force said at a briefing.
At least 15 people were injured, and several houses were damaged, per reports from local South Korean media outlets.
A South Korean air force spokesperson said the bombs were “abnormally discharged” and fell outside the live-firing area.
“We are sorry for the damage caused by this accident, and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that initial findings indicated that one of the pilots had used the wrong coordinates for a bombing run.
Pocheon, which has a population of about 141,000, is northeast of Seoul. At around 20 miles from the heavily armed demilitarized zone, it’s one of the country’s closest urban centers to the border with North Korea.
Photos published by South Korean media outlets showed rural houses with shattered windows, damaged roofing, and debris littered on the street. Most of the hit buildings remained structurally intact.
The MK-82 is an unguided general-purpose bomb, meaning it can be used for a wide variety of attack missions. The jet that dropped the bombs, the KF-16, is a South Korean version of the American F-16 Fighting Falcon.
CNN, citing the South Korean air force, reported that the live-fire drill was linked to Freedom Shield, a yearly joint military exercise with the US.
It’s scheduled to begin this year on March 10 and end on March 20.

Macy’s (M) Q4 2024 earnings
Macy’s (M) Q4 2024 earnings
Macy’s delivered another quarter of mixed results on Thursday as investors wait and see how quickly CEO Tony Spring can pull off a turnaround of the business with yet another activist investor looking to take the chain private.
Across the business, which includes the Macy’s banner, Bloomingdale’s and Blue Mercury, comparable sales during the all-important holiday quarter were down 1.1%. But comparable sales across its owned and licensed businesses, plus its online marketplace, were up 0.2%, which is the highest the metric has been since the first quarter of 2022.
Plus, the so-called First 50 locations – the stores that Macy’s is devoting more resources to as part of its turnaround plan – saw comparable sales up 0.8%, marking the fourth quarter in a row the metric has been positive.
The two bright spots in an otherwise worse-than-expected set of results suggest Macy’s turnaround is showing some signs of life – it just might take a bit longer than expected.
For fiscal 2025, Macy’s is expecting adjusted earnings per share of $2.05 to $2.25 and sales of between $21 billion and $21.4 billion, lower than Wall Street expectations of $2.31 per share and $21.8 billion, according to LSEG.
Shares of Macy’s were down more than 4% in premarket trading.
Here’s how the department store performed during its fiscal fourth quarter, compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:
Earnings per share: $1.80 adjusted vs. $1.53 expectedRevenue: $7.77 billion vs. $7.87 billion expected
The company’s reported net income for the three-month ******* that ended Feb. 1 was $342 million, or $1.21 per share, compared with a loss of $128 million, or a loss of 47 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items including impairments and settlement and restructuring charges, Macy’s reported earnings of $507 million, or $1.80 per share.
Sales dropped to $7.77 billion, down about 4% from $8.12 billion a year earlier. Like other retailers, Macy’s benefited from an extra selling week in the year-ago *******, which has skewed comparisons.
Macy’s mixed results come just over a year into CEO Spring’s tenure as the legacy department store’s chief executive. While Bloomingdale’s and Blue Mercury saw another quarter of positive comparable sales, growing 4.8% and 6.2%, respectively, Macy’s namesake banner continues to be the company’s laggard with comps down 1.9%.
To address long-standing issues at the legacy banner, Spring has implemented an aggressive store closure plan that includes shuttering 150 stores and a strategy to fix its better-performing locations. As Macy’s and other department stores have shrunk over the years, it’s faced criticism for neglecting its stores, not having enough staff and falling behind on the retail essentials that are necessary to win in any environment.
Spring has started to address those issues by investing in 50 locations and providing better staffing, merchandising and visual presentation of the company’s varied assortment. So far, the plan appears to be working. Those locations have performed better than the bulk of the chain and the company plans to expand the strategy beyond those 50 stores.
Still, Macy’s will have about 350 namesake locations left over after it finishes closing stores, and it will take time – and capital – to extend its strategy to the bulk of the chain. Whether or not investors have the patience to see Macy’s strategy play out remains to be seen.
In December, activist investor Barington Capital revealed it has a position in Macy’s and wants the company to cut spending, explore selling its luxury brands and take a hard look at its real estate portfolio. It’s the fourth activist push at the department store in the last decade.
Like the activists that had come right before it, Arkhouse and Brigade, many suspect that Barington is mainly after Macy’s lucrative real estate portfolio and is more interested in juicing it for profit than doing the work necessary to revitalize the chain. Still, Macy’s must act in the interest of shareholders and if it’s not doing enough to return value quickly, an activist could eventually win out.
Macy’s on Thursday announced its intent to resume share buybacks under its remaining $1.4 billion share repurchase authorization, “market conditions pending.”
“Building on our momentum, we continue to elevate the customer experience, deliver operational excellence and make prudent capital investments,” Adrian Mitchell, Macy’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer, said in a statement. “We remain committed to generating healthy free cash flow and returning capital to shareholders through share buybacks and predictable quarterly dividends.”

Does everyone experience colour in the same way? A new investigation into this long-standing philosophical question has provided the strongest evidence yet that people with typical colour vision do indeed share the same subjective experiences of colour.
Putting our subjective conscious experiences into words is notoriously challenging, making it hard to directly compare how our reality lines up to someone else’s, but researchers have previously tried various tricks to get around this.

Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter both performed at the Brits over the weekend
The Brit Awards ceremony last weekend prompted 825 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom, with the majority involving Sabrina Carpenter’s pre-watershed opening performance and Charli XCX’s outfit.
US star Carpenter opened the awards show at The O2 in London on Saturday evening with a mash-up of her hits Espresso, Bed Chem with Rule Britannia!, while wearing a red sparkly military-style mini-dress with matching stockings and suspenders.
She was also seen having a close encounter with a dancer dressed as a soldier wearing a bearskin hat during the show, broadcast live on ITV.
Essex star Charli XCX, who won five awards, wore a see-through ****** dress and addressed the controversy over her outfit during one of her speeches on the night: ” “I heard that ITV were complaining about my nipples. I feel like we’re in the era of ‘free the nipple’ though, right?”
PA Media
Sabrina Carpenter performed a medley including a few bars of Rule Britannia!
An Ofcom spokesperson said: “We are assessing the complaints against our rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.”
The watershed is 9pm. It marks the time when TV programmes which might be unsuitable for children can be broadcast from. The Brits began at 20.15 GMT and ended at 22.40 GMT.
Charli XCX won album of the year for her summer hit Brat. She also picked up best dance act, song of the year for her track Guess, featuring Billie Eilish (who was the first non-Brit to appear on a best song-winner), plus songwriter of the year.

Charli XCX was the big winner of the night, which came as a surprise to nobody
Carpenter was honoured with the recently resurrected global success award.
The prize was originally created in 2013 to recognise British acts who had sold millions of records and concert tickets abroad. The previous recipients were One Direction (2013-14), Sam Smith (2015), Adele (2016-17) and Ed Sheeran (2018-19).
Six years ago it was abandoned altogether, but it may have been brought back to lure Carpenter to perform.

Sure, Nvidia DLSS 4 is incredibly impressive – but AMD’s improved upscaling tech could be a real game-changer
Sure, Nvidia DLSS 4 is incredibly impressive – but AMD’s improved upscaling tech could be a real game-changer
AMD’s FSR 4 has dethroned FSR 3 and Nvidia’s DLSS CNN model, according to Digital Foundry
FSR 4 has significantly reduced ghosting and improved image stability, especially at long draw distances
DLSS 4’s transformer model is still the victor over AMD’s new upscaling method
AMD has been taking full advantage of its rival Nvidia’s controversial RTX 5000 series launch, with Team Red’s new Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs launching today. With affordable pricing and great performance, the new lineup could provide strong competition in the GPU market – and the new-and-improved FSR 4 upscaling method may have a much greater impact than anticipated.
According to Digital Foundry, AMD’s FSR 4 offers a significant leap over the previous FSR 3 model, while simultaneously dethroning Nvidia’s former DLSS CNN model (in some cases), most notably when compared in their respective ‘performance’ modes as reported by Wccftech. FSR 4 makes outstanding improvements over its predecessor in retaining image stability at longer draw distances, by removing ghosting of objects in motion – this was a big issue in some games for both FSR 3 and Team Green’s DLSS 3 when using performance mode.
An important note is that FSR 4’s performance mode is slightly slower in terms of frame rates compared to FSR 3’s (evident in Digital Foundry’s video below) – this was also previously observed in DLSS 4’s transformer model, but it only applies in some titles where we see a minor performance drop. FSR 4’s frame rate in performance mode is typically 5-10fps slower than FSR 3’s (based on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in DF’s video), but in my opinion, it’s ultimately a worthwhile tradeoff for such significant image quality improvements.

FSR 4 is off to a great start
It’s safe to say that DLSS 4’s new transformer model still leads as the best upscaling method, and FSR 4 doesn’t quite match it. However, the leap over the CNN model may be enough to catch the attention of gamers – especially since with upscaling, the Radeon RX 9070 XT provides fantastic 4K performance at a shockingly affordable $599 / around £510 / AU$870) price. Compared to Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series GPUs, which are either hard to find or have absurdly inflated prices, it feels like a no-brainer.
It’s also important to note that AMD is at a slight disadvantage – FSR 4 (as of now) is only available on RDNA 4 GPUs, whereas Nvidia’s DLSS 4 is available retroactively on all RTX GPUs. But this doesn’t matter much if you can’t find any older RTX cards that aren’t already discontinued or at MSRP (unless overpaying isn’t a big deal for you, but like… come on, don’t do that).
Despite FSR 4’s current-gen exclusivity, AMD’s midrange GPU focus for this generation is looking great so far, and the RX 9070’s price and FSR 4’s current image quality capabilities are a strong starting point.

It’s time to show AMD love
I must admit, it feels refreshing to congratulate the perennial underdog AMD on its latest GPU efforts, considering Nvidia’s total domination of the market over the years. It’s obvious that the new Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT won’t compete with the likes of Team Green’s RTX 5090 or RTX 5080, but this was never Team Red’s intention.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
I’m happy to say that AMD has delivered at a time when PC gamers need it most – the RTX 5000 series launch is nothing short of a mess (despite its flagship GPU’s admittedly monstrous performance capabilities), and as I’ve said previously, what good is a Blackwell GPU if you can’t find one?
AMD’s FSR 4 is another testament to how impressive its RDNA 4 architecture is, since FSR 3 was quite a long way behind DLSS 3’s competing CNN model. If there are no supply chain or price inflation issues (though there still could be), I don’t see how it isn’t a clear win in the midrange space for Team Red over its fiercest rival.
Patience is a virtue, I must admit – you could easily decide to play the waiting game for RTX 5000 series GPU prices to drop, but there is no guarantee that this will happen (the RTX 4090 is a prime example, with prices still over MSRP even now). With this strong showing from AMD, I’m hoping it’ll give Nvidia more to worry about with gamers considering a switch – and competition is good for the consumer, so long may it continue.

Experts sound alarm over insects laying massive amounts of eggs: ‘It’s very concerning’
Experts sound alarm over insects laying massive amounts of eggs: ‘It’s very concerning’
Science Daily reported that the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory have developed computer models that are predicting the changing climate is accelerating the population growth of the spongy moth, an invasive species that is causing extensive damage to North American forests.
The report found that the models are much better than those that don’t account for the climate.
What’s happening?
Hotter, drier conditions in North America will limit the growth of a ******* — also invasive to the continent — that infects the spongy moth with pathogens that spread among the population, limiting the number of moths in an area before they can do too much damage.
A warmer climate means there will be less ******* growth, so the destructive moths will lay more eggs and reproduce more quickly, resulting in increased defoliation of trees.
The research in this case shows that incorporating information about climate conditions helps scientists make better predictions about what the future holds for the ecology of different regions.
Why is this research important?
These computer models account for multiple organisms in an ecosystem and how they interact with each other. This is important for researchers to predict the impact of rising global temperatures, which are causing domino effects in ecosystems and accelerating faster than previously predicted.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
Most studies about the changing climate look at individual species of plants and animals. “A small amount of climate change can have a big effect when you compound it across multiple species,” Greg Dwyer, professor of ecology and evolution, said. “So, computer models are crucial for understanding the effects of climate change on species interactions.”
Researchers are telling us that we are not worried enough. The warming of the planet and drier conditions are affecting fungal infection rates, causing them to drop dramatically. This drop will cause moth populations to increase dramatically, which will result in the destruction of more trees. Weather conditions in recent years have exacerbated the problem, increasing the number of spongy moth outbreaks.
“Our projections were pessimistic, but probably not pessimistic enough. It’s very concerning,” Dwyer said.
What can be done to help?
In order to control the population of the spongy moth in North America and limit the destruction of trees, we can take action to combat rising temperatures by making changes in our day-to-day lives. By adopting more sustainable habits, we can help. Reducing waste and being more informed about the products we buy are important components. Supporting clean energy such as solar power is another step we can take.
These actions can keep invasive species under control as well as create a healthier planet.

Marvell Technology’s post-earnings sell-off is a buying opportunity, Loop Capital says in upgrade
Marvell Technology’s post-earnings sell-off is a buying opportunity, Loop Capital says in upgrade
Marvell Technology’s post-earnings sello-ff is a buying opportunity, according to Loop Capital. Marvell shares tumbled 16% in the premarket after the semiconductor company’s latest results and guidance failed to impress investors. The chipmaker posted earnings of 60 cents per share on revenue of $1.82 billion. Those were modestly better than the 59 cent per-share earnings and $1.80 billion in revenue expected by analysts polled by FactSet. Marvell also issued better-than-expected current-quarter guidance. MRVL 1D mountain Marvell Technology Still, the downbeat response is an opportunity investors should use to their advantage, according to analyst Gary Mobley, who on Thursday upgraded the stock to buy from hold in a Thursday note. “Following better-than-expected 4Q25 (Jan) results and above-consensus 1Q26 (Apr) guidance, and given the near-40% correction in the shares since Jan (based on aft-mkt), we are taking the opportunity to take up our rating on shares of MRVL from Hold to Buy,” Mobley wrote. “Based on the sell-off in shares in the aftermarket, clearly investors didn’t get the beat-and-raise needed to sustain MRVL’s rich now valuation,” he continued. “Additionally, the small upside to results/ guide is being driven mostly by things other than AI/cloud, albeit the growth is clearly being led by AI/cloud. Now, we feel shares have a compelling risk-reward consideration.” Marvell shares are down more than 18% already this year. The analyst’s $110 price target, which he left unchanged, implies more than 20% upside from Wednesday’s close for the stock of $90.14.

*** homes install subsidised heat pumps at record level
*** homes install subsidised heat pumps at record level

The number of *** homes installing heat pumps supported by government-funded incentives rose to a record level last year.
Figures released on Thursday showed 52% more of the low-carbon heating systems were installed than in 2023.
Experts said part of the rise was due to an increase in the grant offered by the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to persuade people to switch from gas boilers.
But the heat pump industry warned that running costs needed to fall for the government to hit its targets to install hundreds of thousands of the devices each year as part of its Net Zero plan to tackle climate change.
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson said: “The energy shocks of recent years have shown the urgent need to upgrade British homes and help more people benefit from homegrown energy.
“That’s why we have almost doubled the budget for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to £295 million for the next financial year, and just launched a new campaign to help make more families aware of our offer of a £7,500 heat pump grant.”
Most *** homes use gas boilers to meet their heating needs but gas is a fossil fuel that when burnt produces planet-warming gases.
With home heating accounting for 14% of the ***’s carbon emissions, switching households from gas boilers to heat pumps is a key part of the government’s climate pledges.
Heat pumps use electricity rather than gas, so as the country moves to generating electricity from renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, heat pumps will be responsible for far fewer planet-warming emissions than boilers.
About half of heat pumps currently being installed in the *** are supported by government funding – the remainder are made up of commercial installations and new builds which do not receive support.
One of the most popular government support mechanisms is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides a £7,500 grant to households to offset the cost of installation.
Ed Matthews, *** programme director for think tank E3G, said the decision by the previous government to increase the grant by 50% has had the biggest impact on the installation figures.
“It has been absolutely critical for making it affordable for households to buy this technology,” he said.
In its first year, the scheme only spent a third of the funding allocated due to low public interest. But for 2024-2025 it is expected to overspend its budget.
Mr Matthews said it was critical that in the government’s June spending review recommits to the programme and provides greater funding for low-income households as the current costs – even with the grant – can be prohibitive.
“They do not want to take their foot off the brake here. If they suddenly start slashing the heat pump grant that’s going to make the market ******,” he said.
He also “strongly welcomed” the government’s announcement on Thursday that it was launching a new communication campaign to build public understanding of heat pumps, which he hoped would combat misinformation about the technology.
Despite the progress, the total number of heat pump sales, including those not supported by government programmes, was just shy of 100,000 last year, according to the Heat Pump Association (HPA). This is significantly below the government’s target of 600,000 a year by 2028.
But Charlotte Lee, chief executive of the HPA, remained positive because of future planning policy changes expected later this year.
“The future homes and building standards will see the market move. 200,000 homes are potentially being built every year, [and] the vast majority of those will be required to have a heat pump – it will absolutely create a gear change in the market,” she said.
Madeleine Gabriel, head of sustainable mission at charity Nesta, agreed that changes to planning rules could also help to address the regional disparities in installation.
“The key thing is removing a rule that meant that you could only install a heat pump if you were more than one metre away from your property boundary, which made it difficult if you’ve got a small garden,” she said.
This explains why dense urban areas, like London, has some of the lowest installation rates as a large share of people live in flats, she added.
Ms Gabriel and Mr Matthews agreed with the *** government’s independent climate advisors, the *** Climate Change Committee (UKCCC), that the biggest barrier is the high price of electricity.
In a major report published last month, the UKCCC said that the cost of electricity could be brought down if the levies applied to electricity bills, to fund the cost of social and environment schemes, were removed or placed on gas bills.
“Once the consumer can save money [with heat pumps], I think it really changes the level of interest. We’re moving from early adopters that think it’s the right thing to do to, actually, this is just a sensible financial investment choice,” Ms Lee said.

This 6.5%-Yielding Dividend Stock Continues to Add to its Massive Growth Backlog and Has Plenty More Growth Coming Down the Pipeline
This 6.5%-Yielding Dividend Stock Continues to Add to its Massive Growth Backlog and Has Plenty More Growth Coming Down the Pipeline
Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) offers investors a monster income stream. The ********* pipeline and utility currently yields 6.5%, which is several times higher than the S&P 500’s 1.3% yield.
That lucrative income stream is only part of the draw. Enbridge also has a massive backlog of expansion projects to fuel its growth for several years. Add that growth to its income stream, and Enbridge could produce a powerful total return in the coming years, making it a great long-term investment opportunity.
Enbridge recently updated investors on its growth prospects. The energy infrastructure giant noted that it has now secured $20 billion (in U.S. dollars) of expansion projects after recently adding another $1.7 billion in accretive new investments. Those latest additions are:
Mainline capital investment: Enbridge plans to invest up to $1.4 billion through 2028 to improve the reliability and efficiency of its Mainline oil pipeline system.
Birch Grove: The company approved an additional $276 million expansion of its T-North Pipeline to move additional natural gas supplies. It also expects to complete this project in 2028.
T15 expansion: It sanctioned a $69 million expansion of its T15 project to double the capacity of the gas utility expansion project in support of Duke Energy’s Roxboro gas-fired power plant. T15 should start commercial service in the 2027 to 2028 timeframe.
Those new projects further enhance and extend Enbridge’s long-term growth outlook. It currently has projects across its four core franchises of liquids pipelines, gas transmission, gas distribution and storage, and renewables that should enter service through 2029. The company expects to place $15.9 billion of projects into service through 2027, with the remainder slated to come online in 2028 and 2029.
This massive expansion project backlog gives Enbridge tremendous visibility into its growth prospects. The company expects to deliver 7% to 9% growth in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) through 2026 and 5% annually after that. Meanwhile, it should deliver 3% annual distributable cash flow-per-share growth through 2026 and 5% beyond next year. This growth should support annual dividend increases of up to 3% through next year, potentially accelerating to as much as 5% after 2026. That positions the company to continue building on its three decades of annual dividend increases.
Enbridge currently sees plenty of opportunities to continue expanding each of its franchises. CEO Greg Ebel commented on the company’s growth prospects at its recent investor day:
Story Continues
Global energy demand is growing and will require all forms of energy. Enbridge’s diversified infrastructure footprint is uniquely positioned to meet this demand, delivering a balance of oil, natural gas and renewable power across five countries, 43 states, and eight provinces. All four of our growing franchises are opportunity-rich, and we’re seeing approximately CA$50 billion ($34.5 billion) of combined new growth opportunities through 2030.
The company sees the biggest growth opportunity in gas transmission, at $15.9 billion. It’s pursuing $6.2 billion of projects to increase gas supplies in the U.S. Gulf Coast region by supporting production growth in the Permian and offshore and moving that gas to support growing industrial and export demand. Meanwhile, the company is pursuing $9.7 billion in opportunities to support growing gas-fired power demand by utilities and data centers.
Enbridge is also pursuing expansion projects in liquids pipelines, totaling $6.9 billion; gas distribution and storage, $6.2 billion; and renewable power, $4.8 billion. The bulk of the growth potential in its liquids pipeline segment is lower carbon opportunities of $4.1 billion, such as carbon capture and storage pipelines and sequestration sites and infrastructure to support blue ammonia production and exports. Meanwhile, it’s pursuing several opportunities to support growing power demand through additional expansions at its gas utilities and building more renewable energy capacity.
Securing these and other new projects would further enhance and extend Enbridge’s long-term growth profile. They would put the company in an even stronger position to continue increasing its high-yielding dividend in the future.
Enbridge’s combination of a high dividend yield and solid growth prospects positions it to produce strong total returns for investors. If it can grow its cash flow per share in that 3% to 5% annual range, it could achieve total annual returns of 10% to 12% when adding in its high-yielding and steadily rising dividend. That’s a very strong return from such a low-risk dividend stock.
