FEMA CFO fired over payments to New York City for migrants says she had DOGE sign-off
FEMA CFO fired over payments to New York City for migrants says she had DOGE sign-off
A former government official who says she was falsely accused of illegally sending funds to New York City to book luxury hotels for undocumented migrants — and then publicly ridiculed and fired — said Thursday that just days earlier she had been directed by a member of the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, to make the payments.
Mary Comans, who was the chief financial officer at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, sued the agency and the Department of Homeland Security, or DHS, on Tuesday.
“I was fired illegally by the Trump administration for doing my job, for doing exactly what I was directed to do by the Trump political appointees at the Department of Homeland Security and at the DOGE,” she told CBS News in an interview Thursday. “They told me to do these actions, to make these payments, and then they fired me.”
A DHS spokesperson did not respond for comment, nor did Brad Smith, the DOGE official Comans says she interacted with.
The lawsuit argues she was “unlawfully terminated” from her position “without cause or the due process required by law and the Constitution.” As chief financial officer, Comans was a member of the “senior executive service,” the highest-level civil servant.
The lawsuit alleges that DHS and FEMA publicly disclosed information about her
termination that was protected under the Privacy Act and that she was defamed by the false portrayal about her conduct. At the time of her dismissal, Comans says the agency suggested falsely in a press release that she was a “deep state activist.”
Comans joined DHS in 2004, inspired to serve in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She called herself “apolitical,” noting that she served both Republican and Democratic administrations, often deploying to the scenes of natural disasters to help manage the federal government’s response.
“My job is to serve the administration that was elected by the American people,” she said.
She had served as FEMA’s chief financial officer since 2017 before she was abruptly fired on Feb. 11.
During President Trump’s first days back in office, Comans said the executive leadership team at FEMA was fielding executive orders as quickly as the president could sign them and “were implementing them to the letter that he expected.”
One of the orders Comans carried out required DHS, and by extension FEMA, to freeze money going to nongovernmental organizations that provide services to undocumented immigrants. Payments that continued came from a $650 million Customs and Border Protection program created by Congress to reimburse cities for housing and sheltering migrants that had entered into the country illegally and were awaiting court proceedings. FEMA administered payments issued by the immigration program, but those funds were separate from the billions of dollars the agency spends on disaster relief.
On Feb. 5, Comans says she and her team met with Smith, one of Elon Musk’s top lieutenants, who was overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency’s work at DHS. According to Comans, Smith instructed them to keep the funds from the CBP program flowing.
Comans said it was “very clear” from the conversation with Smith “that FEMA was doing the right thing in continuing” the payments.
“We also received written guidance from the acting general counsel at FEMA that payments to state and locals needed to continue under the normal course of business,” she said.
Despite those assurances from Smith, on Feb. 10, Musk posted on X that DOGE “just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house ******** migrants. Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order.”
Later that day, when she arrived at work, Comans says she met with her boss, acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton. She says Hamilton was also surprised by Musk’s tweet and told her she had done nothing wrong. Comans then drafted a report, which CBS News reviewed, that documented her conversations with DOGE.
“I told him I was going to put together an after-action report detailing each of the conversations, the dates, the actions that FEMA took to show that we were operating within the guidelines provided to use by the Trump administration,” Comans said. “He thanked me, hugged me and again reassured me that nobody at FEMA would be fired for making these payments.”
Comans said she had another conversation with Hamilton that night to tell him that the funds had been recouped.
“I shared with him that I had successfully reversed the payment and the funds were being returned to Treasury as we speak,” she said.
The next morning, on Feb. 11, Comans says a colleague walked into Coman’s office to tell her that she had been terminated effective immediately.
“Unfortunately, my colleague had no answers to provide me,” Comans said.
Her name went viral later that morning after conservative broadcaster Benny Johnson posted on X that Comans was “fired for illegally funding migrant luxury hotels in NYC against the orders of President Trump.” The post was spread by other rightwing accounts.
The Department of Homeland Security sent out its press release about the firings shortly after that.
“Effective immediately, FEMA is terminating the employment of four individuals for circumventing leadership to unilaterally make egregious payments for luxury NYC hotels for migrants. Firings include FEMA’s Chief Financial Officer, two program analysts and a grant specialist,” the release said. “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, DHS will not sit idly and allow deep state activists to undermine the will and safety of the American people.”
Musk also shared a post about Comans, writing that her behavior was “criminal.”
Comans said she feels betrayed by the department and agency because “they have allowed Mr. Musk and others to slander my name, to defame me.”
“The department has sat by idly and in some ways they have joined that choir of saying untrue statements about me,” she said.
Comans wants her name cleared and to be compensated for the damage she says has been caused. She would also take her job back if given the opportunity.
“I don’t know that you can put a price on it,” she said. “To me, the No. 1 goal is clearing my name.”

Fenerbahce 1-3 Rangers: ‘Cyriel Dessers leads way for weirdest Ibrox team ever’
Fenerbahce 1-3 Rangers: ‘Cyriel Dessers leads way for weirdest Ibrox team ever’
Is there one to rival them in the Rangers ‘odditorium’? Club historians will have plenty to say on that.
In more recent memory, the Giovanni van Bronckhorst side of 2021-22 are worth a mention. They got to the Europa League final that season, only losing on penalties.
They beat the Borussia Dortmund of Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerreiro and Jude Bellingham then the RB Leipzig of Konrad Laimer, Josko Gvardiol, Dani Olmo and Dominik Szoboszlai.
One missed penalty in the final shootout against an Eintracht Frankfurt side later broken up and sold on for serious money was all that stopped them.
All of those massive nights against heavy-hitters in Europe and they had to settle for second place in the Scottish Premiership to Ange Postecoglou’s new Celtic team.
There are big differences between that team and the Rangers of today, though. Van Bronckhorst’s lot fought hard domestically, losing the league by just four points and winning the Scottish Cup.
They were never as far off the pace in Scotland as the current crew, and never displayed the kind of incredible turbulence that has been so pervasive this season.
Winston Churchill described the geo-politics of the old Soviet Union as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma – a description that could be stolen and applied to the twin personalities of this Rangers outfit.
Fenerbahce, like others before them, afforded Rangers time and space on the not unreasonable premise that a team not good enough to score against second-tier opposition in Scotland was hardly likely to cause them too many problems.
Big mistake. Huge. They reckoned without the Jekyll and Hyde, the domestic Rangers and the European Rangers, the Rangers who have the ******’s own job in breaking down defensive teams in the Premiership but who are like kids in candy stores in Europe when there is space and an ability to counter-attack.
Dessers typified the effort: strutting, lethal and head and shoulders ahead of more celebrated strikers down the other end.
Ferguson and his coaches deserve huge credit for a formation shift to three at the back, which worked well. For sending their team out with belief when those players had reason not to believe.
And for delivering a massive result that sets up a pulse-quickening night at Ibrox next Thursday. Bonkers, but brilliantly so.

As JPMorgan Chase enforces a 5-day RTO, staffers complain about too few desks, spotty Wi-Fi, and sneezing, sick coworkers
As JPMorgan Chase enforces a 5-day RTO, staffers complain about too few desks, spotty Wi-Fi, and sneezing, sick coworkers
It’s the first week of JPMorgan Chase’s return-to-office mandate that obliges thousands of people to come back in five days a week, and so far the adjustment has been less than smooth. Tensions are high among the bank’s employees, who are grousing about noisy workplaces, sporadic Wi-Fi, and sick coworkers who cough and sneeze.
One of the biggest problems facing JPMorgan Chase staffers, though, is the lack of desks. The nation’s largest bank has a desk reservation system, but for some sites it doesn’t work, or the policy is “first come, first serve,” according to seven JPM employees who spoke to Fortune. This means that many employees, when they arrive at their workplace, will find all the desks filled, forcing them to hunt for a place to do their work. None of the workers, whose identities are known to Fortune and who are spread all over the U.S., wanted to speak on the record for fear of retaliation.
“There definitely aren’t enough desks for everyone so people have to hope others are taking PTO that day to get a seat,” said one JPM employee who works on the East Coast. This worker’s team had to kick employees to another section after not getting enough desks, they said.
Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s chairman and CEO, has been a vocal proponent of RTO, claiming that working at the office helps boost teamwork, mentorship, and innovation. But the lack of desks makes it hard for some JPMorgan Chase groups to work together.
“We saw our seats were already occupied by others. We were forced to have to sit apart from one another,” a second JPM staffer, also on the East Coast, said.
The lack of desks has forced many JPM employees to arrive at the workplace early, sometimes by as much as one hour, so they can snag a seat. Others have taken to placing personal items, according to the second source, while some employees in the San Francisco Bay Area are putting “paper tents” labeled with their team’s name on desks to try to “unofficially reserve an area,” a third person added. Sometimes these efforts don’t work, and employees still must search for places to sit.
Dimon’s five-day-a-week mandate was imposed in part to improve team spirit, but, ironically, it appears to have had the opposite effect in some cases.. Not getting a seat, or having a desk scooped up by other workers, has led to increased tension but so far no fights, people said. “You could just tell folks that got there later were feeling a bit off-kilter,” a fourth employee in the South said.
In January, JPMorgan Chase set off a firestorm when the bank informed its 317,233 employees that all staff would be required to return to the office five days a week. Roughly 40% of JPMorgan Chase’s employees had been working on a hybrid schedule, where they were in the office three days a week, since the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Many bank employees went back full-time on March 3 while others are scheduled for RTO on March 10. But some sites, like JPMorgan Chase’s Polaris regional headquarters in Ohio, which houses roughly 13,000 employees, were still listed Wednesday as “not yet determined.”
Story Continues
Many workers are upset about the RTO. A group of JPMorgan Chase employees, who called themselves the “JPMC Workers,” in February launched a publicly visible petition calling on Dimon to retain the hybrid-work model that the bank has used for years. But JPMorgan Chase’s CEO has dismissed the employee movement, saying “I don’t care how many people sign that f—ing petition,” Fortune has reported. JPMorgan Chase is also facing a unionization push among some workers.
Bank employees remain angry about the RTO, but “the fear here is just as bad, so no one talks,” the second person said. Some employees expect the bank to adhere strictly to attendance policies, even for hybrid workers, and use the RTO mandate to fire people without paying severance. A JPMorgan Chase spokesman denied that the bank is using the office directive to manage attrition. “This is absolutely false,” said the spokesman, who referred Fortune to comments made by Jeremy Barnum, JPMorgan Chase’s CFO, in January during the bank’s fourth-quarter press conference call. JPMorgan is “very much not hoping for attrition as a function of return to the office,” Barnum said. The RTO is a “strategic decision for the company based on what we think is best for the long-term prospects of the company,” he added.
While some workers are describing the lack of desks as troublesome, other workers point to noise as the biggest issue with coming back to the office. Some employees said they work in an open office space without walls while others say they’re in cubicles. All agree that there’s lots of socializing, people talking on the phone, and, because meeting rooms are scarce, employees often holding Zoom calls at their desks. “People don’t know how loud they are on Zooms and, of course, if you have a dozen people Zooming then you’re going to hear all of that,” a third employee located in the Midwest said.
Some workers have taken to wearing noise-cancelling earbuds or headphones in the office, they said.
Then there’s the Wi-Fi, which some bank employees described as sporadic or just not working. Earlier this week, a group of employees on the East Coast were unable to connect to Wi-Fi for several hours and were told to work from home until the technical issues were resolved, they said. “That was an entire day wasted,” the second employee said.
Some JPM staffers also complained about people coming to work sick. Many times, these workers don’t wear masks and risk spreading their illnesses to others. One employee said they sat next to someone who stayed in the office despite “coughing and sneezing all day long.”
“The office is loud, crowded, and overall not an enjoyable place to be,” an employee from the Midwest said.

Instagram is experimenting with a Discord-like ‘community chat’ feature
Instagram is experimenting with a Discord-like ‘community chat’ feature
It seems that Instagram is working on a “community chat” feature that allows people to organize groups of up to 250 people in the app. The so-far unreleased feature was spotted by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who has a solid track record of uncovering new features within Meta’s apps.
According to screenshots shared by Paluzzi, it seems that community chats will function similarly to Discord. Individual users can form the chats around specific topics and control who can join, though there’s apparently a limit of 250 people per community.
Unlike Instagram’s , which allow creators to blast out messages to their followers, anyone who is in the community chat can participate in the conversation. There are also built-in moderation features. “Admins can remove messages and members to keep the channel safe,” the screenshot says. “We also review Community Chat against our Community Standards.”
It’s not clear when, or if, the feature may launch. An Instagram spokesperson described it as an internal prototype that’s not being tested outside the company. But Meta has previously released similar features in its other apps. WhatsApp began experimenting with a “” feature in 2022, and brought “Community Chats” and Messenger later that same year. Mark Zuckerberg said it was meant to help people find “a new way to connect with people who share your interests.”

Broadcom (AVGO) earnings report Q1 2025
Broadcom (AVGO) earnings report Q1 2025
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan.
Lucas Jackson | Reuters
Broadcom reported first-quarter earnings on Thursday that topped analysts’ expectations, and the chipmaker offered strong guidance for the current quarter. The stock jumped 16% in extended trading.
Here’s how the company did versus LSEG consensus estimates:
Earnings per share: $1.60 adjusted vs. $1.49 expected
Revenue: $14.92 billion vs. $14.61 billion expected
Broadcom said it expects about $14.9 billion in second-quarter revenue, higher than the $14.76 billion forecast by Wall Street analysts. Revenue in the last quarter rose 25% from $11.96 billion a year earlier.
The company said net income increased to $5.5 billion, or $1.14 per share, from $1.33 billion, or 28 cents per share, in the same ******* last year.
Broadcom’s artificial intelligence business is at the center of the company’s recent *****, which saw its stock price more than double last year. The company is one of the primary data center infrastructure vendors for AI, working both on Google’s custom AI chips as well as providing essential components for networking thousands of other chips together to develop advanced AI software.
Prior to the after-hours pop, the stock was down about 23% so far in 2025, as investors rotate out of risk partly due to concern about President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Broadcom said it recorded $4.1 billion in AI revenue during the first quarter, which is 77% higher on a year-over-year basis. Those sales are reported as part of Broadcom’s semiconductor solutions business, which grew 11% on an annual basis to $8.21 billion during the quarter.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said in a statement that the company expects “continued strength in AI semiconductor revenue,” reaching a projected $4.4 billion in the second quarter.
In December, Broadcom said it was developing custom AI chips with three large cloud customers. Tan said on Thursday that in addition to those customers, it had “deeply engaged” with two other hyperscalers, and are working with four other potential customers to develop their own custom AI chips.
Tan said that Broadcom closely chooses partners for developing custom AI chips who can deploy the resulting product in large quantities. “To put it bluntly, we don’t do it for startups,” Tan said.
The other major part of Broadcom’s revenue comes from its infrastructure software division, which includes software from the company’s acquisition of VMware in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2023. Broadcom said it saw $6.7 billion in software sales during the quarter, a 47% increase on an annual basis.

Investigation into claims victims’ records accessed
A hospital trust is investigating reports staff may have “inappropriately” accessed the medical records of the three people killed in the Nottingham attacks.
Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, were stabbed to death by Valdo Calocane in the city in June 2023.
Dr Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, said the trust was investigating “concerns that members of staff may have inappropriately accessed the medical records” of the three victims.
He said the families had been informed of the investigation and would be updated.
“The families of Ian, Grace, and Barnaby have already had to endure much pain and heartache and I’m truly sorry that this will add further to their suffering,” Dr Shehmar said.
“Through our investigation, we will find out what happened and will not hesitate to take action as necessary.”
The claims of the medical records being accessed inappropriately were first reported by the Daily Mirror.
Calocane was sentenced to a hospital order in January 2024 after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
In February it was announced that a judge-led public inquiry into the attacks would take place “within weeks”.

Broadcom shares surge as solid forecast eases demand worries for AI chips
Broadcom shares surge as solid forecast eases demand worries for AI chips
By Zaheer Kachwala and Max A. Cherney
(Reuters) -Broadcom CEO on Thursday assuaged investor worries about AI chip demand with a strong second-quarter forecast and hinted about new potential customers that could boost revenue in a highly competitive market.
Its forecast eased concerns about the thirst for AI chips, a day after Marvell Technology’s spooked the market with a tepid forecast. Broadcom shares, which closed down 6%, surged 14% in extended trading after the results.
The chipmaker expects revenue of around $14.90 billion, compared with estimates of $14.76 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Broadcom is seeing red-hot demand for its custom artificial intelligence chips from cloud computing companies looking for an alternative to the costly processors designed by Nvidia as they expand their AI infrastructure.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said the company expects revenue of $4.4 billion in the second quarter for its AI semiconductors as hyperscale customers invest in custom AI chips for data centers.
Analysts expect Broadcom to benefit further from large tech companies moving away from off-the-shelf chips to in-house processors as computing needs for AI tasks get more complex and personalized.
Broadcom now has four more hyperscale customers who are “deeply engaged” with it to create their own custom chips separate from the current three that use its processors, CEO Tan said in a post-earnings call.
These four are not included in its estimate of revenue opportunity of $60 billion to $90 billion in 2027, he said.
Reuters reported last month OpenAI is working with Broadcom to finalize its first custom chip design and reduce its reliance on Nvidia.
“The company is enabling hyperscalers and others who want to build custom AI accelerators to control their designs and costs,” said Anshel Sag, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.
Broadcom is one of several companies that is evaluating Intel’s most advanced manufacturing process, known as 18A. It has run test wafers through the Intel factories that evaluate portions of chips, not complete designs.
“Broadcom is much better positioned compared to its peers as its exposure in AI market is relatively more diversified with multiple AI ASIC customers,” Summit Insights analyst Kinngai Chan said.
Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, or ASICs, are chips designed for specific tasks. Designing and manufacturing an ASIC helps companies save the amount of energy chip use and boost performance.
Broadcom reported first-quarter revenue of $14.92 billion, beating estimates of $14.61 billion. AI revenue surged more than 77% to $4.1 billion on strong adoption of its custom-made accelerators.

Syrian forces and Assad loyalists in deadly clashes in Latakia
Syrian forces and Assad loyalists in deadly clashes in Latakia
Syrian forces loyal to the new government in Damascus have engaged in heavy fighting with remnants of the ousted Assad regime in a coastal area in the country’s north-west.
At least 13 soldiers have been killed in the clashes in Latakia province, close to a Russian-controlled airbase, according to state TV.
A curfew has been announced until Friday morning.
They are some of the most violent attacks on forces linked to Syria’s Islamist government since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December.
Clashes continue in coastal areas that form the heartland of the Alawite community and are a stronghold of the Assad family.
Alawite activists said their community had been subjected to violence and attacks since Assad fell, particularly in rural Homs and Latakia.
State news agency Sana reported that “huge military reinforcements” were heading to the city of Jableh.
Late on Thursday, Syrian-based Step news agency, was reporting that government-aligned forces had killed “about 70” former regime fighters, while more than 25 others were captured in Jableh and surrounds.
The AFP news agency said 28 gunman loyal to Assad were killed, citing monitors, and added that government forces were using helicopters to attack targets.
The BBC has been unable to verify the figures.
A spokesman for Syria’s defence ministry, Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani, issued a warning to Assad loyalists via state media.
“Thousands have chosen to surrender their weapons and return to their families, while some insist on fleeing and dying in defence of murderers and criminals. The choice is clear: lay down your weapons or face your inevitable fate,” he said.
The region has become a major security challenge for interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa.
He is also facing resistance in the south, where there have been clashes with Druze forces in recent days.
Earlier this week, Syria’s foreign minister told the global chemical weapons watchdog that the new government was committed to destroying any remaining stockpiles produced under-Assad.
Assad’s government denied ever using chemical weapons during the 14-year civil war, but activists accused it of carrying out of dozens of chemical attacks.

Indian Wells: Emma Raducanu loses in first WTA match since stalking incident in Dubai
In tricky conditions created by a brisk wind in the Californian desert, Raducanu looked uncomfortable throughout.
The 2021 US Open champion made a host of errors to allow Uchijima, a tenacious opponent who adapted to the breeze quickly, to come out on top of the often scrappy rallies.
Raducanu faced break points in her opening six service games as a result of the pressure created by the mistakes caused by her lack of accuracy.
Five of those games ended in Raducanu losing serve as she trailed by a set and a break to the 52nd-ranked Uchijima.
The Briton cut a subdued figure after she could not convert any of three chances to break back for 3-3.
After Uchijima dug deep to hold, Raducanu did not win another point and trudged off court having lost for a sixth time in her nine matches this year.

New Mexico adult dies with measles, though cause of death isn’t yet confirmed
An adult who was infected with measles has died in New Mexico, state health officials announced Thursday, though the virus has not been confirmed as the cause.
The person who died was unvaccinated and did not seek medical care, a state health department spokesperson said in a statement. The person’s exact age and other details were not immediately released.
The person was from Lea County, just across the state line from the West Texas region where 159 measles cases have been identified and a school-age child died last week. New Mexico health officials have not linked the outbreak there to the Texas cases.

The person is the 10th in Lea County to have a confirmed measles infection. Seven were unvaccinated. The vaccination status of the other three is unknown. Six of the cases are in adults and the rest are in children younger than 17.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that they were sending a team to Texas to help local public health officials respond to the outbreak, which began in late January.
Measles is a respiratory virus that can survive in the air for up to two hours. Up to 9 out of 10 people who are susceptible will get the virus if exposed, according to the CDC.
The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is safe and highly effective at preventing infection and severe cases. The first shot is recommended for children ages 12 to 15 months, and the second for ages 4 to 6 years.
“We don’t want to see New Mexicans getting sick or dying from measles,” said Dr. Chad Smelser, the deputy state epidemiologist. “The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is the best protection against this serious disease.”

Stock futures were higher on Thursday evening as traders sought to look past U.S. trade policy worries that have rattled the market this week. They also looked ahead to a big payrolls report due Friday morning.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 49 points, or 0.1%. S&P 500 futures gained 0.4%, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced nearly 0.7%.
The action follows a rocky session on Thursday, with the major averages going back into sell-off mode as the latest concessions on President Donald Trump’s tariff policies failed to calm investors. The blue-chip Dow lost more than 400 points, and the Nasdaq Composite fell into correction territory, ending the session more than 10% off its high.
Stocks have been on a roller-coaster ride as Trump’s tariff policies have worried investors over future U.S. growth. While Trump said on Thursday that a swath of goods from Canada and Mexico that are covered by the North American trade agreement known as USMCA would be exempt from the announced duties until April 2, that wasn’t enough to spur a recovery rally similar to the one seen on Wednesday.
“Markets are all over the place trying to price tariff impacts, which is really hard to do when the goal post moves, disappears, and morphs by the second,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group.
This latest market rout put the three major averages on course for their worst week since September 2024. The S&P 500 is off 3.6% week to date, while the 30-stock Dow is down 2.9%. The Nasdaq is the underperformer of the *******, down 4.1% so far this week.
February’s nonfarm payrolls report will be the next big catalyst on investors’ radar, giving markets further insight into the health of the economy. Economists polled by Dow Jones forecast growth of 170,000 jobs, and expect the unemployment rate held steady at 4%.

Trump blames ‘globalists’ for stock market sell-off
Trump blames ‘globalists’ for stock market sell-off
U.S. President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office, on the day he signs executive orders, at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S. March 6, 2025.

Major stock indices dropped sharply this week, as rattled investors struggled to get a handle on President Donald Trump’s sweeping and shifting tariff policies.
But when asked in the Oval Office on Thursday whether he thought it was his tariffs that were scaring the markets, Trump pinned the blame elsewhere.
“Well, a lot of them are globalist countries and companies that won’t be doing as well,” Trump replied, “Because we’re taking back things that have been taken from us many years ago.”
Trump did not elaborate on what those things were.
“We’ve been treated very unfairly as a country,” he continued. “We protect everybody. We do everything for all these countries, and a lot of these are globalist in nature.”
It was not clear what was globalist in nature, but NBC reported Thursday that the Trump administration is considering an overhaul of how it interacts with NATO allies.
Later in the same press event, Trump again blamed “globalists” for the market downturn. “I think it’s globalists that see how rich our country’s going to be, and they don’t like it.”
Over the course of an hour, Trump used “globalist” to describe people, companies and countries, making it difficult to pin down specifically what he was talking about.
But during his first term, Trump repeatedly denounced a set of ideas he called “globalism,” and labeled some of his political opponents “globalists,” as he pushed his nationalist, isolationist worldview.
The word has drawn condemnation from critics who say it is linked to antisemitic conspiracy theories about Jewish people.
According to the American Jewish Committee, the term “globalist” is used today as “a coded word for Jews who are seen as international elites conspiring to weaken or dismantle ‘Western’ society using their international connections and control over big corporations.”
It was unusual for Trump to use the term “globalist” as a catch-all for what he claimed was driving day-to-day movements of the stock market.
The White House did not immediately reply when asked for additional context about Trump’s invocation of the term.
The Oval Office remarks came as Trump, just two days after imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, issued temporary exemptions for many goods coming into the U.S. from the two neighboring countries.
He denied that those pauses came in response to the market rout.

“Nothing to do with the market,” he said, adding, “I’m not even looking at the market.”
Even as Trump seemed to reject the idea that his tariffs spurred a sell-off, he once again acknowledged that those duties could at least briefly roil markets.
“There’ll always be a little short term interruption,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to be big, but the countries and companies that have been ripping us aren’t particularly happy with what I’m doing.”
“Again, there’ll be disruption,” he added.

Pamela Bach, Baywatch and Knight Rider star, found dead, aged 62
Pamela Bach, Baywatch and Knight Rider star, found dead, aged 62
Pamela Bach, the former Baywatch actress and ex-wife of David Hasselhoff, has died aged 62.
Bach was found at home in the Hollywood Hills on 5 March after she died by suicide, said the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office.
She met Hasselhoff while acting with him on the set of TV series Knight Rider, and the two married in 1989. She went on to star alongside him on lifeguard TV drama Baywatch before their divorce in 2006.
“Our family is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pamela Hasselhoff,” Hasselhoff said in a statement.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time but we kindly request privacy as we grieve and navigate through this challenging time.”
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bach began acting in the 1970s. She and Hasselhoff have two daughters together.
Her acting credits included soap opera The Young and the Restless, Cheers, The Fall Guy, T.J. Hooker, Superboy and Viper.
Her daughter, Hayley Amber Hasselhoff, posted a photo of her parents on Instagram, with a white star, in apparent tribute to her mother.
In Bach’s last Instagram post, published on New Year’s Eve, she wrote about being excited to welcome 2025.
She said she was also excited to watch her granddaughter, London, “grow and seeing her smile light up my world is truly the greatest blessing”.
“May 2025 be filled with beautiful moments, laughter, and all the blessings your hearts can hold,” she continued.
“Here’s to a year of making cherished memories, spreading joy, and embracing every precious moment!”
Bach’s representative, Sharon Kelly, told TMZ she was shocked by her death.
“My heart goes out to her family, her beautiful daughters and granddaughter who Pamela constantly gushes about and loves so dearly,” she said.
