  1. Why VCs Are Banking on Bitcoin? Billion-Funds Expect BTC to Grow in 2025 Why VCs Are Banking on Bitcoin? Billion-Funds Expect BTC to Grow in 2025 After the US presidential election, (BTC-USD) updated its historical maximum, reaching $93,000 on November 13. Matthew Sigel, head of digital asset research at the investment company VanEck, expects that in the next six months, BTC can reach even higher values, up to $180,000. Since November 5, the day of the US presidential election, Bitcoin has grown by about 34%, trading on November 18 at $91,240. As Sigel noted, the growth may continue in 2025. BTC Can Reach $180,000 VanEck is a global investment company with under management $100 billion in assets. It is considered a pioneer in innovative exchange-traded funds (ETFs), including the first VanEck Gold Bullion ETF (ASX:). In early January, the company received approval to launch a Bitcoin ETF. As of mid-November, VanEck’s Bitcoin fund had $17 billion in assets under management. According to Sigel’s calculations, the price of Bitcoin could double, rising to $180,000 over the next two quarters, that is, by mid-2025. “It is just getting started,” Sigel told CNBC. “We’re now in blue sky territory, no technical resistance, and we think we are likely to make repeated all-time highs over the next two quarters.” Still, positive expectations for Bitcoin growth do not guarantee that the market will grow permanently. According to VanEck, there were about six price corrections of 10% each in 2020 between the election and the end of the year: “The same patterns occurred four years ago, and a number of indicators that we track still point to a continuation of the rally.” .co analysts came to similar conclusions about the continued growth of the main cryptocurrency. They believe that the BTC price peak in the current bullish ******* may occur in mid-2025. The experts’ data is based on the duration of previous cycles, although they do not predict the price level, as in the case of VanEck, where they indicated $180,000 per Bitcoin. Indeed, the previous Bitcoin price rally lasted for several months after the 2020 elections. Then, starting from November 6, the price of the first cryptocurrency rose from about $15,000 to $29,000 by December 31. And the maximum value of that cycle was $63,000 in April 2021, according to CoinMarketCap. “Our price target for this cycle is $180,000, which would represent a 1,000% return from the bottom”, Siegel specified. Similar calculations for the time of the price peak were given by the analytical crypto company Cryptorank in October 2025. The company also noted a potential scenario for the general market growth before that time — the onset of the so-called altcoin season. Interest in Bitcoin As an example of the indicators that VanEck tracks to determine the state of the cryptocurrency market, Sigel noted the rise in Bitcoin searches via Google (NASDAQ:). The popularity of the Bitcoin query, according to Google Trends on November 15, is 46, which is comparable to the peaks in 2020 and 2021. While this is half the all-time high of 100 at the end of 2017, the indicator has only risen higher twice in the entire history of observation (both in 2021, with peaks of 72 and 67). Sigel noted the significant rise in downloads for the U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase (NASDAQ:) app, which climbed to 9th place in the U.S. App Store’s most downloaded free iPhone apps on November 14, up from 435 before the election. Coinbase also secured the top spot in the Finance category. Other crypto-related apps saw increased downloads: Robinhood (NASDAQ:) ranked 2nd, and Crypto.com ranked 5th in the Finance category. On Google Play, Crypto.com was 2nd, Coinbase 5th, and Robinhood 9th, reflecting a surge in interest in crypto trading platforms. In previous cycles, as The Block writes, the Coinbase application was in the top 10 when the cryptocurrency market was approaching peaks. Based on this, we can expect that following Bitcoin reaching new price highs, interest from retail traders will grow. Russia says U.S. missile decision could raise the stakes in Ukraine war – National Russia says U.S. missile decision could raise the stakes in Ukraine war – National President Joe Biden’s decision to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with U.S.-supplied long-range missiles was met with ominous warnings from Moscow, a hint of menace from Kyiv and nods of approval from some Western allies. Biden’s shift in policy added an uncertain but potentially crucial new factor to the war on the eve of its 1,000-day milestone. 5. BLAST R6 Major Montreal Win Secured by w7m In Effortless Grand Final BLAST R6 Major Montreal Win Secured by w7m In Effortless Grand Final The BLAST R6 Major Montreal has wrapped, and at the end of all things sat a redemption story for Brazil’s w7m Esports. The team went up against BDS in the grand final in Canada, mere weeks after the EU side eliminated w7m at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh in the final series. Fortunately, as the match unravelled, w7m Esports found immense traction against Team BDS, losing the first map but closing out the next three back-to-back-to-back without much fuss. Brazil Wins Big It has been a mixy year for w7m Esports. In February, the organisation won the Six Invitational in Sao Paolo then promptly dropped the entire roster before starting over again. In August, the team finished in second place at the Esports World Cup but still managed to net a $350,000 prize after being knocked out at the final post by Team BDS. This latest win was a revenge story for w7m Esports, but it also marked the third BLAST R6 Major in just over a year that the organisation has won. In May 2023, the org won in Copenhagen, and in November 2023, the BLAST R6 Major Atlanta was ripe for the taking for the Brazilian squad. This weekend, the BLAST R6 Major in Montreal played out as most people predicted. Team BDS came hard and knocked out Team Secret and FaZe Clan to make it into the grand final, while w7m swept Spacestation and beat Virtus.pro to quality for the title shot. The last match in the tournament was an intense one. As the series opened on Consulate, Team BDS pushed for an early win, but w7m immediately fired back on Nighthaven with a retaliatory point. From there, it was effortless for the Brazilian squad, as the following two matches on Clubhouse and Kafe were tidied up without too much resistance. The stunning set pieces put out by w7m’s DoDez earned him MVP of the grand final. That marks the end of the 2024 competitive schedule for Rainbow Six Siege – what’s next is the Six Invitational 2025, which will be held in Boston in February. 7. Traders like the broadening postelection rally, but are getting worried about rising dollar threat Traders like the broadening postelection rally, but are getting worried about rising dollar threat (This is a wrap-up of the key money moving discussions on CNBC’s “Worldwide Exchange” exclusive for PRO subscribers. Worldwide Exchange airs at 5 a.m. ET each day.) Portfolio managers are watching the transition taking place in the markets with the election, interest rate movements and a broadening out of participation among stocks. Also, strategists and traders are weighing the risk of the rising dollar to earnings. Worldwide Exchange Word of the Day: Transition Kevin Mahn of Hennion and Walsh says the country is in transition following the election and so is the investor landscape. “The other area that is transitioning is the stock market rally, beyond the Magnificent 7 now into the non-Magnificent 493 stocks,” said Mahn on Worldwide Exchange. He added: “Last year those Mag 7 stocks accounted for 62% of the total return of the S & P 500. Through the first half of this year, still 59%. But here is the good news in the third quarter of this year they only accounted for 9% of the total return of the stock market. That’s good. It’s healthy for the continuation of this bull market. Rising Dollar impact on Q4 and 2025 The U.S. dollar’s more than 2.5% rise since election day is starting to create concerns about a potential impact on Q4 and 2025 earnings according to a number of traders and strategists. “It should give investors in multi-national companies, which by definition is the S & P 500, some pause and some concern, but it is very very difficult to model. I think for now, for better or worse a lot of investors are saying ‘eh’ we will worry about it when it is time to worry about it,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. The ICE U.S. Dollar index is currently at a higher level than it was in June of 2022 when Microsoft warned of a stronger dollar impact to earnings. Other multi-national companies including Johnson and Johnson, Estee Lauder and Amazon also warned of the dollar impact that year. According to Evercore ISI, S & P 500 companies get approximately 30% of earnings from outside the ******* States. Making the ‘wise choice” on investing in China President Joe Biden and ******** President XI Jinping met at the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Saturday. Xi added without naming the President-elect, that Trump should, “Keep exploring the right way for two major countries to get along well with each other.” “I think the choices are already made to a certain extend,” said Ross Mayfield Investment Strategist for Baird Private Wealth Management on Worldwide Exchange. Mayfield added, he expects tariffs on China to be larger, broader and more targeted: “As far as investing there, the stock market has been extremely volatile and not a big total return over the last 20 or 30 years.” Mahn echoed some of the same sentiment on China: “I’m very dubious about investing in China as a portfolio manager. I see better opportunities in the U.S. and other international developed markets. I like building globally diversified portfolio but China is not a part of that mix for me right now.” Chart of the day: Howmet Aerospace Mahn said Howmet Aerospace (HWM) is one of his top picks in the Defense sector. 10. Proscenic Q8 Max ****** vacuum review Proscenic Q8 Max ****** vacuum review Proscenic Q8 Max: two-minute review The Proscenic Q8 Max offers a lot for its budget-friendly price. There’s mopping functionality built-in, and it comes with an effort-saving self-empty base to save you from having to constantly empty the onboard dust cup. At 4,200Pa, the suction is surprisingly high for a model in this price bracket, too. I put one to the test to see how it compares to the rest of the best ****** vacuums on the market, and I was fairly impressed. In my cleaning tests, I found it did a good job of sucking up everything from fine dust to larger debris on hard floors, and when amped up to maximum suction mode it also performed well on my carpet-like rugs, although I suspect it would struggle with thick carpet. The suction is powerful enough to pull up long hair, but I did find it easily became tangled in both the main roller and the side brush, and both needed regular de-hairing. The mop function is great for tackling fresh spillages and keeping hard floors looking smart, but it’s not powerful enough for dried-on dirt (although to be fair, even premium ****** vacuums struggle with this). This feature is best for maintenance rather than deep cleaning. You select the suction power and water flow for each room according to floor type, and with three options for each, you have decent control over your cleaning. The **** automatically amped up suction when it sensed it was on a rug, but (unfortunately) did not also shut off water at this point, so you’ll need to set up no-go zones on the app to avoid damp carpets. Using smart 360 LiDAR navigation, the Q8 Max creates detailed maps of your home, and it can store information for up to five levels. On test I found it did a decent job of navigating my apartment, and for the most part avoided obstacles, especially after it had done a few runs and got its bearings properly. The navigation isn’t perfect, though. The companion app is easy to follow, allowing for easy scheduling, no-go zones, and room-specific cleaning preferences. Overall, the Proscenic Q8 Max is a solid choice for anyone looking for a decent ****** vacuum on a budget – it compares well to TechRadar’s best cheap ****** vacuum picks. On test, I was generally impressed with how much time it saved me in keeping the apartment clean, even if it didn’t get every single ***** and cranny spotless. That’s the short version – read on for my full Proscenic Q8 Max ****** vacuum review. Proscenic Q8 Max review: price & availability List price: US$299 Launch date: July 2024 Available: US only The Proscenic Q8 Max launched in July 2024 and at time of writing is available in the US only. It sits in the budget range for ****** vacuums (TechRadar counts anything under $500 as budget for robovacs), and it’s a standout option given its features. It can mop as well as vacuuming, and auto-empties dust into its dock – both features that are unusual at this price point. For that very affordable price, you get a complete package, including a spare side brush, mop pad, and dust bag. When you consider the convenience of self-emptying alongside smart navigation, customizable cleaning options, and a solid performance, I think the Q8 Max is an excellent deal for the price. However, you’ll naturally need to make some performance compromises for this price point (I’ll get into that in detail in the Performance section). Value for money score: 5 out of 5 Proscenic Q8 Max specs Swipe to scroll horizontally Max suction: 4,200Pa ****** diameter: 12.6” / 32cm ****** height: 3.8″ / 9.7cm Dock dimensions (W x D x H): Requested Dust bin volume (******): 0.35L Dust bin volume (base): Requested Water tank volume (******): 0.25L Base type: Charge and self-empty dustbin Proscenic Q8 Max review: design Combination vacuum and mop, and does both simultaneously Comes with a relatively compact, self-emptying base station Various spare parts included The Proscenic Q8 Max’s design is compact and modern. It’s slim enough to slide under furniture and features a sleek, all-****** look. The ****** vacuum is 3.8 inches tall and 12.6 inches in diameter; the charging station is 8.5 by 6.67 by 10.5 inches. This base station includes a larger dustbin into which the small onboard bin will automatically empty when docked. Unsurprisingly for this price, there’s no automatic draining or refilling of the ****’s water tank. I was pleasantly surprised by the minimal plastic that was used to transport the Proscenic Q8 Max. Aside from a few plastic wrappings, most of the unboxing waste was cardboard, something to keep in mind if you value a more sustainable option. (Image credit: Future) Setup was an absolute breeze; I followed the Quickstart guide and had the robovac up and running in no time. The charging station does double duty, automatically emptying the dustbin into a disposable dust bag (which comes preinstalled). With extras like a spare HEPA filter, side brush, and mop pad included, you won’t need to buy replacements right away. (Image credit: Future) In fact, the only setup annoyance I experienced is that, because it’s only compatible with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so to be able to connect this device, I had to temporarily change my 5GHz Wi-Fi to 2.4GHz so that the device could connect. The Proscenic app allows you to map your home, divide rooms, and customize cleaning zones, which was especially useful for my quirky apartment layout. It uses LiDAR for navigation. There are three suction powers and three water levels, and both need to be manually selected when you start a cleaning session. There is a little automation – for instance, the ****** vacuum will increase suction when it detects a rug but won’t also turn off mopping on soft floors (I’ll get more into this in the Performance section). Design score: 4.5 out of 5 Proscenic Q8 Max review: performance Solid suction on hard floors; max mode will clear most debris Decent navigation and obstacle avoidance, especially after initial setup ******* Mopping fine for light spills, but tough stains need manual intervention I tested the Proscenic Q8 Max over the course of a few weeks, putting it through its paces in my 21 meter-square, one-bedroom apartment. Let’s start with vacuuming performance. There’s a maximum suction of 4,200Pa, which is good for this price – I’d expect more like 3,000Pa for a budget model. There are three suction levels to choose from, and you need to select these manually before setting the ****** off on its cleaning task. I threw everything I could at the Q8 Max during testing, from fine dust to hair to larger debris like oats, and tried it on both its lowest and highest suction settings, on hard floors as well as carpet-life rugs. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Future) (Image credit: Future) (Image credit: Future) On the lowest suction mode on hard floor, the ****** struggled a bit with finer dust and left some debris scattered. However, it really stepped up on the highest suction power, cleaning up almost everything in sight. Rugs similarly proved a bit of a challenge on the low power mode, but switching to high power yielded much better results. (Image credit: Future) The side brush was very effective at attacking the debris around the edges of rooms. Of course, the actual ****** has to fit into those corners, but as long as it does, the side brush was able to do its job well. One ******* test for ****** vacuums is how well they can deal with hair. I have shoulder-length hair and while I found this ****** vacuum picked up strands very well, they did tend to get caught in both the side brush and main brush. For the vacuum to function at its highest potential, I had to regularly clean the brushes to remove the hair. (Image credit: Future) I appreciated the addition of the self-empty dock, which can hold several weeks’ worth of dust, making this a nice, low-effort solution. Many budget ****** vacuums just have a simple charge dock, so I appreciated this more advanced option. (Image credit: Future) One useful feature is that the Proscenic Q8 Max will automatically ramp up suction when it detects that it’s moving from a hard floor to soft carpet or a rug. Less impressive is that it won’t also switch off mopping when it senses carpet – something I unfortunately discovered after a mopping session that left my rug wet. To prevent this from happening, you can set up no-go zones on the app, which are areas that the Proscenic Q8 Max will not go over during a mopping session. Rug mishaps aside, I was generally impressed with the Proscenic Q8 Max’s mopping powers. It handled everyday spills, like water and even dried milk, very well. However, it didn’t manage to clear more stubborn stains – though that’s not uncommon for ****** vacuums. The water tank and mop pad are easy to install and to clean, and I appreciated the ability to adjust water flow for different floor types via the app. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Future) (Image credit: Future) Some cheaper robovacs require you to manually swap over the backplate when moving from mopping to vacuuming, but that’s not the case here: the Proscenic Q8 Max can mop and vacuum simultaneously. Maintenance was easy too – emptying the dustbin was hands-free for weeks at a time, and cleaning the mop pad and side brush was straightforward. Removing the mopping pads and washing them regularly is key to making sure the moping sessions are leaving your floors as clean as possible. There are models that have docks that can clean your mop pads, but you’ll have to pay a lot more for this function (most are at least $1k/£1k. And even then, you’ll need to take care of the occasional deep clean of your mop pads. (Image credit: Future) My testing also included checking how well this ****** vacuum navigated my apartment and avoided obstacles like furniture. I found the obstacle avoidance feature worked well after a few sessions, bumping into fewer objects the more I used it. Similarly, there were a couple of sessions where the ****** vacuum seemed to be confused and kept going over areas that it already vacuumed/mopped but after a while it settled itself and was pretty consistent. I also let the ****** vacuum map my apartment, and while the initial mapping was slow, the app allowed me to customize and fine-tune the room layouts with ease. In terms of noise levels, the Proscenic Q8 Max is relatively quiet, especially on its lower settings. During testing, it measured 57.5 decibels in low suction mode, 60.6 decibels on medium, and 66.6 decibels on high. Even at its loudest, it’s not overly disruptive, making it a good choice for cleaning while you’re home without too much noise pollution. Performance score: 3.5 out of 5 Proscenic Q8 Max review: app Easy-to-use interface with clear instructions Option to set cleaning schedules and room-specific preferences Requires 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for setup During my review *******, I used the Proscenic companion app extensively, and overall, I found it intuitive and straightforward. Setting up the ****** vacuum and mapping out my apartment was quick, although it did require me to manually swap from my 5GHz Wi-Fi connection to a 2.4GHz one for setup. Once connected, I was able to create a map of my apartment, customize cleaning zones, set up no-go zones, and adjust the suction and water flow levels for specific rooms. (Image credit: Future) One of my favorite features is the ability to schedule cleaning sessions for different rooms or times of the day. You can also track where the ****** has cleaned in real time, which is handy if you’re out and about. Additionally, voice control via Alexa, Google Home, or Siri is a nice touch for starting a session hands-free. The app makes the Q8 Max feel even more powerful and personalized, allowing me to clean my home exactly the way I want. The ability to map up to five levels and store them in the cloud makes this vacuum a great option for people with multiple floors. The app allows you to customize cleaning preferences for each level for added convenience. Should you buy the Proscenic Q8 Max? Swipe to scroll horizontally Attribute Notes Rating Value Sits in the budget price bracket and offers a lot for that very affordable price. 5/5 Design Compact and sleek, fits under most furniture. Self-empty dock is useful and unusual at this price. 4.5/5 Performance Great on hard floors, picking up most debris, though struggles a bit on carpet/rugs in lower suction modes. Mopping is great for light cleaning but not deep stains. 3.5/5 App User-friendly with customizable settings for each room. Simple to schedule, set no-go zones, and adjust suction/water flow. 4/5 Buy it if… Don’t buy it if… How I tested the Proscenic Q8 Max I tested the Proscenic Q8 Max over the course of a few weeks, running it through its paces in my 21 meter-square, one-bedroom apartment. I ran tests to see how it handled both fine dust and larger debris (hello, oats), using both the lowest and highest suction settings. 12. This 28-year-old is risking her financial future to support her unemployed mom. Is it worth going deeper into debt? This 28-year-old is risking her financial future to support her unemployed mom. Is it worth going deeper into debt? This 28-year-old is risking her financial future to support her unemployed mom. Is it worth going deeper into debt? In a recent Reddit post, Annie, a 28-year-old college student, shared her history of balancing financial obligations at home while working and covering the cost of her tuition. She lives with her mother, Erin, 48, and her two younger brothers, but her earnings are stretched thin to help keep their household afloat. Recently, Annie got a new job with similar pay but a better bonus structure, though she regrets telling her mom, who has since frequently asked for financial support. The most recent request – a $500 bill to repair a wall damaged by the family’s dog – was one Annie couldn’t fulfill. “I had to borrow from a financial institution and I have a credit card that is maxed out because she asked me for money to fix her car,” Annie wrote. Annie gave her mom an early deadline for repayment, hoping it would help her balance her payments. Yet, when she reminded her mom of these dates, her younger brother Eliot argued she should be more lenient with their mom. With rent prices high and tuition prices soaring, Annie feels caught between her commitment to her education and family’s financial needs. But is Annie really doing herself any favors jeopardizing her financial stability to help her unemployed mom? As Annie is trying to support her family, she’s putting her own financial future at risk. By maxing out credit cards and taking on loans, she’s putting her ability to manage her own obligations — including the cost of her education — at stake. According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost for in-state tuition is $9,750, while out-of-state tuition is an average of $27,457. If you factor in the average balance for student loan debt of $38,787, based on data from Experian, it’s clear that Annie’s situation is financially overwhelming. Some Redditers, recognizing the long-term implications, encourage Annie to prioritize her future. “You need to realize one thing: your college tuition and YOUR bills come first. DO NOT TAKE OUT A LOAN FOR YOUR MOTHER. Mom decided to have several kids and she has to support herself because she’s an ******,” ElmLane62 said. Successfully managing your finances often means helping yourself before you can help others – and it’s not selfish. Taking on high-interest debt for a loved one can set you back years, especially when you’re on a student budget or starting out with an entry-level salary. Story Continues If Annie dreams of goals like homeownership or a secure retirement, her current decisions might delay or even jeopardize them. While her support for her family may feel necessary now, it could come at a steep cost. Read more: 5 ways to boost your net worth now — easily up your money game without altering your day-to-day life Annie is at a crossroads where setting firm financial boundaries could make all the difference in securing her future. While she wants to help her family, prioritizing her own financial responsibilities may have to come first to avoid ongoing debt and stress. Angela Sitka, a licensed marriage and family therapist, shared some perspective in Time Magazine that could resonate with those in Annie’s situation: “It’s really speaking up for yourself in a way where you’re taking responsibility for your own feelings and actions, but you’re also clearly communicating what you want from the other person.” It may be easier said than done, but a 2023 Federal Reserve report based on 2022 data highlights how the pressure to support others can also mean compromising personal stability. According to the report, 33% of young adults aged 22 to 24 still live with their parents to provide financial support, yet nearly 40% of all adults couldn’t cover a $400 emergency expense with cash savings. Those who happen to fall under both categories may be in rough financial shape. But the good news is, by setting firm boundaries, Annie and others in her position can regain control over their financial health and build the stability they need to one day support their loved ones with ease. Shopify Rebellion Wins Game Changers Championship Without Dropping a Map Shopify Rebellion Wins Game Changers Championship Without Dropping a Map This weekend, the VCT Game Changers Championship unravelled in Berlin, with ten of the greatest teams in the VALORANT space battling it out for the lion’s share of a $500,000 prize pool. By the time the dust had settled, Shopify Rebellion stood victorious, claiming the trophy without dropping a single map in an epic upper-bracket run. The team proved to be an unstoppable force, effortlessly walking through all comers to secure the $180,000 grand prize and beating MIBR GC in the grand final. Epic Win This is Shopify Rebellion’s second VCT Game Changers Championship win in as many years. Last year, the team showed up strong in Sao Paolo, beating Team Liquid in the grand final and taking home one of the biggest prizes in VALORANT esports. The year before that, during the inaugural event, SR managed to pick up a second-place finish. Now that SR has secured back-to-back championship wins, nobody can doubt that the organisation is a contender for the title of the best team in the Game Changers space. Only G2 Gozen comes close, but the ********* team finished in third place this time around. According to Esports Charts, this year’s Game Changers Championship set a new viewership record, pulling in a peak concurrent viewer count of just over 460,000 users. By comparison, last year’s event secured just 293,000 peak viewers. To put that into perspective, Rainbow Six Siege’s BLAST R6 Major Montreal took place this weekend, and viewership for that event peaked at around 169,000 viewers – and this is one of Rainbow Six’s best years on record. Since being introduced not too long after VALORANT was released, the Game Changers tournament space has grown immeasurably. NASA Rockets Create Artificial Clouds Under Northern Lights in Norway NASA Rockets Create Artificial Clouds Under Northern Lights in Norway A rare sight unfolded on November 10, as NASA launched rockets that created artificial clouds beneath auroras during a minor geomagnetic storm over northern Norway. The event took place near Andøya Space Center, a facility situated in an ideal location for studying geomagnetic activity due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle. Tour operator Ivar Sandland, who witnessed the spectacle, told Space.com about the unusual visual phenomena during his trip from ***** to Tromso. As per the report by the publication, Sandland, who runs Nordland Adventures, assumed it was a cloud at first glance. He later discovered through local news that the visible trails in the sky were part of NASA’s ongoing experiments. VortEx Mission Studies Atmospheric Energy Flow The event was part of NASA’s Vorticity Experiment (VortEx), which investigates energy dynamics in the turbopause, where the mesosphere and thermosphere meet at approximately 90 kilometres above Earth. The report further mentions that the rockets released trimethyl aluminium, a compound that reacts in the atmosphere to produce visible streaks. These artificial clouds are used to track gravity waves, aiding researchers in understanding their interactions at this altitude. Sounding rockets, smaller suborbital vehicles designed for research purposes, were deployed for the experiment. The visual effects created by the chemical release offered scientists crucial data on energy transfer processes, while also captivating onlookers with an unusual display under the northern lights. Ideal Location for Space Research Andøya Space Center serves as a hub for launching rockets intended for atmospheric and geomagnetic research. Charged particles from the sun, guided by Earth’s magnetic field towards the poles, produce auroras by interacting with gases in the upper atmosphere. This makes northern Norway an optimal site for observing these interactions. Such experiments offer insights into atmospheric science while fostering curiosity among local residents and visitors, highlighting the intersection of research and natural wonder. 15. OpenAI execs mused over Cerebras acquisition in 2017 — to mitigate predicted Nvidia supply woes OpenAI execs mused over Cerebras acquisition in 2017 — to mitigate predicted Nvidia supply woes OpenAI once considered buying Cerebras, an AI hardware startup, aiming to secure chipmaking capabilities that would lessen its reliance on Nvidia, reports TechCrunch. Recent legal filings from Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI reveal discussions between Musk, OpenAI executives, and Tesla about acquiring Cerebras, though the plan ultimately did not proceed. The discussions originated with Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI, who suggested in 2017 that Tesla could be the acquisition vehicle for Cerebras. Sutskever noted that buying Cerebras through Tesla could create a conflict since Tesla’s duty to maximize shareholder profit might not align with OpenAI’s nonprofit-driven mission. His idea sparked further consideration, but ultimately the acquisition was shelved. Multiple OpenAI leaders, including Musk and Greg Brockman, who is now OpenAI’s president, participated in the conversation, which discussed merger terms and due diligence steps. Despite these efforts, the deal fell apart, though the legal filings do not specify why it was abandoned. Cerebras, which designs wafer-scale AI processors that it claims outperform Nvidia’s GPUs for AI training, is now preparing to go public. The company has raised $715 million and is targeting a valuation of around $8 billion. However, its reliance on a single client, Abu Dhabi’s G42, for 87% of its revenue in the first half of 2024 poses a risk, especially as G42’s historical ties to China’s Huawei have drawn attention from U.S. lawmakers. OpenAI’s acquisition of Cerebras might have been mutually beneficial, allowing Cerebras to bypass the challenges of an IPO while giving OpenAI resources to design AI processors in-house and therefore not relying on Nvidia, which dominates the AI processor market these days. Since abandoning the acquisition plan, OpenAI has revamped its hardware strategy. Initially, the company wanted to build a network of fabs operated by foundries like TSMC, and solely dedicated to AI processors. However, this was not exactly financially viable, so OpenAI shelved the idea. The company is now working with Broadcom to design its own AI processors that are expected to be made by TSMC. By developing proprietary processors, OpenAI aims to reduce its dependency on Nvidia and cut operational costs. The first chips could be ready as early as 2026, allowing OpenAI to improve cost efficiency for training and deploying its AI models, which aligns with the company’s long-term strategic goals. Xiaomi launched the car, which draws styling cues from Porsche, in March, entering a crowded China EV market with an attention-grabbing price tag – under $30,000 for the base model, $4,000 cheaper than the base model of Tesla’s Model 3 in China. It raised its sales target on Monday and is now aiming for sales of 130,000 this year, far more than an initial goal of 76,000. 18. PS5 Pro owners complain that some Pro-enhanced games look worse PS5 Pro owners complain that some Pro-enhanced games look worse Some PlayStation 5 Pro owners have been reporting that certain games actually look worse on the console. Reports are suggesting that Silent Hill 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – two games that are marked as ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ on the PlayStation Store – actually perform worse in their enhanced versions than they did on the base PS5 console. Players on the Silent Hill 2 Reddit page have been complaining for more than a week that even though the game is apparently PS5 Pro Enhanced, it still has options for Quality and Performance graphics options. It’s claimed that Quality mode still runs at 30 frames per second with no noticeable improvement, while Performance mode now has an odd shimmering effect on some surfaces. It’s been suggested that the shimmering may be a result of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology used by the PS5 Pro, and that it’s working incorrectly with this particular game. One video shows the player switching to Performance mode mid-game, which immediately makes the shimmering effect appear, most notably on the puddles and trees. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor appears to be another victim of PSSR, with Digital Foundry publishing a video which claims the PS5 Pro version has “severe image quality problems”. Showing a side-by-side video of the game running in Performance mode on PS5 and PS5 Pro, Digital Foundry notes clear shimmering present in the latter. “If you look at this side-by-side, you can see just how unstable the game appears now with PSSR in the Performance mode,” Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie says in the video. “I would personally go as far as to say it looks dramatically worse than the old Performance mode here.” Mackenzie notes that Jedi: Survivor had numerous patches before the release of PS5 Pro, and that it had reached a point where its Performance mode was “not that offensive looking – it was basically not too bad, it was basically okay, especially from a normal viewing distance on a large television.” Mackenzie suggested that the issue is almost certainly down to the way PSSR upscales the image. Like other upscaling algorithms, PSSR takes a game’s existing rendered image and uses machine learning to attempt to fill in the missing details and present the game at a higher resolution. The issue with this is that if the rendered image has a low level of detail, or something with an intricate, non-repeating pattern which could confuse the AI upscaler – such as a road surface or foliage – the upscaled results could be different in each frame, resulting in the shimmering effect. It’s not yet clear whether these issues will be patched, or whether the problem has to be fixed at a game level or a system level – Silent Hill 2 players on the game’s Reddit page are becoming impatient at the apparent lack of acknowledgement from Konami or Sony on the issue. “I am totally fine if a patch or fix for the extremely obvious Pro issues is not ready, or is perhaps weeks away even,” user Time-did-Reverse wrote. “I’m not unreasonable and expecting immediate fixes on a new console. “But I think what is reasonable to be irked about is the total lack of communication from both Sony and Bloober Team regarding 1) Acknowledgment of issues, 2) Acknowledgment that said issues are being reviewed / addressed, 3) If known, some form of ETA on addressing the issues and 4) Making it clear whether this game is currently ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ as the tag says on the store.” Source link #PS5 #Pro #owners #complain #Proenhanced #games #worse Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  19. Roblox to ban young children from messaging others Roblox to ban young children from messaging others Getty Images Roblox has announced it will block under-13s from messaging others on the online gaming platform as part of new efforts to safeguard children. Child users will not be able to send direct messages by default unless a verified parent or guardian gives them permission. Parents will also be able to view and manage their child’s account, including seeing their list of online friends, and setting daily limits on their play time. Roblox is the most popular gaming platform for eight to 12 year olds in the ***, according to Ofcom research, but it has been urged to make its experiences safer for children. The company said it would begin rolling out the changes from Monday, and they will be fully implemented by the end of March 2025. It means young children will still be able to access public conversations seen by everyone in games – so they can still talk to their friends – but cannot have private conversations without parental consent. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, said the game is played by 88 million people each day, and over 10% of its total employees – equating to thousands of people – work on the platform’s safety features. “As our platform has grown in scale, we have always recognised that our approach to safety must evolve with it,” he said. Besides banning children from sending direct messages (DMs) across the platform, it will give parents more ways to easily see and manage their child’s activity. Parents and guardians must verify their identity and age with a form of government-issued ID or a credit card in order to access parental permissions for their child, via their own linked account. But he acknowledged identity verification is a challenge being faced by a lot of tech companies, and called on parents to make sure a child has the correct age on their account. “Our goal is to keep all users safe, no matter what age they are,” he said. “We encourage parents to be working with their kids to create accounts and hopefully ensure that their kids are using their accurate age when they sign up.” Maturity guidlines Roblox also announced it planned to simplify descriptions for content on the platform. It is replacing age recommendations for certain games and experiences to “content labels” that simply outline the nature of the game. It said this meant parents could make decisions based on the maturity of their child, rather than their age. These range from “minimal”, potentially including occasional mild ********* or *****, to “restricted” – potentially containing more mature content such as strong *********, language or lots of realistic blood. By default, Roblox users under the age of nine will only be able to access “minimal” or “mild” experiences – but parents can allow them to play “moderate” games by giving consent. But users cannot access “restricted” games until they are at least 17-years-old and have used the platform’s tools to verify their age. It follows an announcement in November that Roblox would be barring under-13s from “social hangouts”, where players can communicate with each other using text or voice messages, from Monday. It also told developers that from 3 December, Roblox game creators would need to specify whether their games are suitable for children and block games for under-13s that do not provide this information. The changes come as platforms accessed and used by children in the *** prepare to meet new rules around ******** and harmful material on their platforms under the Online Safety Act. 22. US missile move welcome but ‘not a silver bullet’ for Ukrainians US missile move welcome but ‘not a silver bullet’ for Ukrainians President Zelensky has been pushing for this moment for months. When it finally came, he was a little coy. Strikes are not made with words, he said in his nightly address: “Such things are not announced, missiles speak for themselves”. President Biden has given Ukraine permission to use long range missiles supplied by Washington to strike deep inside Russia. It is thought that initially Ukraine’s use of the Army Tactical Missile System – known by its acronym ATACMS – will be confined to defending Ukrainian troops still holding on to a small chunk of Russian territory in the Kursk region. A major Russian counter offensive is expected there within days, assisted by as many as 10,000 troops from North Korea. Use of the missiles, capable of targeting military facilities deep inside Russia, could complicate Russia’s efforts, enabling Ukraine to hold onto this valuable bargaining chip ahead of any possible peace talks next year. Ukrainian military experts have welcomed Washington’s decision – saying it will not necessarily change the course of the war, but will restore a little balance. This comes at a time when Russian forces are creeping forward all along the eastern front and Ukraine feels it has been on the back foot for several months. “Ukrainians are very much inspired with the news,” said Maj Volodymyr Omelyan from the Brigade of Armed Forces of Ukraine. ****** has previously warned that such a move from the US would amount to direct participation of Nato countries in the war – but Maj Omelyan said this was simply “bluffing”. “We shall not pay any attention,” he told the BBC World Service, since Russia had issued similar warnings about “many other systems and weapons we received”. “Nothing happened. Nothing will happen this time as well.” The former government minister added that Ukraine needed similar permission for the use of Storm Shadow missiles, manufactured by Britain and France. Ukrainian MP Inna Sovsun said Ukrainians were “happy this decision has been taken” and that it would make a “huge difference”. But she said there was discontent “that it took Biden so long to make a decision that could have saved lives” had it been taken earlier. “I wish it [had] been made before ****** had destroyed half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” she said. What we do not know are the specifics of Washington’s decision. We do not know how many of the systems Ukraine has. Oleksiy Goncharenko, an MP for Odessa, stressed that Ukraine needed a sufficient quantity of missiles for Washington’s move to matter. “It’s very important to have not just permission but missiles – to be capable… to make a difference to the situation.” He added that it was a “pity” the decision “took almost 1,000 days”, adding that it was “better late than never”. We do not know what the Americans are saying in terms of what Ukraine can and cannot do with the missiles. We will also have to see whether Ukraine is allowed to use the missiles more widely in the future But another Ukrainian MP, Maria Ionova stressed that missiles were “not the silver bullet”. She said the focus needed to be on a change in strategy. “Because our enemies are ******* – and we should stand together as well.” It is a significant move ahead of another long hard winter. But Sunday’s Russian missile and drone attacks, which ******* as many as 20 people, served as a stark reminder that Moscow is still intent on winning the war, on its terms. 23. Roblox restricts DMs for kids under 13 and beefs up parental controls in safety push Roblox restricts DMs for kids under 13 and beefs up parental controls in safety push Roblox is adding to younger kids’ accounts and revamping its parental control features as part of a push to beef up the safety features on its platform. The changes come after damaging reports about the company’s safety practices and amid a broader industry reckoning over online platforms’ effect on kids. Now, Roblox is drastically limiting the ability of its youngest users to interact with others on its service. The company plans “over the next few months” to bar all kids under 13 from exchanging private messages with other users outside of specific games or experiences. The company will continue to allow younger kids to see messages publicly broadcast within games and experiences, but they won’t be able to message other users without parental permission. The added restrictions follow a previous update in which the company under 13 from accessing certain types of experiences. This included unrated experiences, as well as “Social Hangouts and Free-form User Creation experiences.” Roblox is also making it easier for parents to set up and tweak their parental control preferences. With the changes, some of which were by Bloomberg, parents will be able to monitor their children’s Roblox usage and settings from their own devices. Previously, Roblox’s parental control features required parents to make adjustments on their child’s device. Now, parents are able to get push notification when their kids want approval for specific actions like joining an experience with a higher maturity rating. Parents will also be able to keep tabs on their kids’ screen time stats and set daily limits, after which the app will be inaccessible. The changes are Roblox’s latest effort to address safety concerns about its service. A in Bloomberg Businessweek earlier this year detailed what it described as Roblox’s “pedophile problem,” noting that “since 2018, police in the US have arrested at least two dozen people accused of abducting or abusing victims they’d met or groomed using Roblox.” Hindenburg Research, a firm known for short-selling, also recently published in which it accused Roblox of failing to protect children from being targeted by predators.
