They’re unlikely to see much of it. New reports say North Korea could send as many as 100,000 troops to ****** alongside Russia. Their pay is estimated at about $2,000 a month each, per South Korean intelligence. But experts say Kim Jong Un will likely pocket much of the money, using it to maintain loyalty. Russia is pouring cash into the deployment of up to 100,000 North Korean soldiers to help its war efforts — but the soldiers themselves are unlikely to receive any of it, according to North Korea experts. Instead, much of the money is likely being pocketed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and those close to him. Ukraine claims that up to 11,000 North Korean troops have been sent to help push back its forces in Kursk, and those numbers could rise. Ukraine’s ambassador to South Korea, Dimytro Ponomarenko, told Voice of America over the weekend that the number could reach 15,000, with troops rotated out potentially every 2-3 months. This could mean about 100,000 North Korean soldiers serving alongside Russia within a year, he said. Anonymous sources familiar with assessments of some G20 nations also used the 100,000 figure in conversation with Bloomberg. North Korean soldiers onscreen in South Korea.AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon For Russia, which South Korean intelligence estimates is paying about $2,000 a month per soldier (around $22 million for 11,000 troops), it could quickly add up. The money would be a life-changing amount for most North Koreans. Defectors say that the average salary for workers and soldiers there is less than $1 a month, according to the Associated Press. But there’s a catch: They’re unlikely to see much, or indeed any of it. “I suspect that money coming from Russia is going directly to the party and then on to the Kim family,” Bruce W Bennett, a defense researcher and North Korea specialist at RAND, told Business Insider by email. Bennett cautioned that his assessment was tentative, and “based upon their organization and past behavior.” There are many documented instances of the North Korean state keeping the earnings its citizens make abroad. “Perhaps only a small amount or even nothing” will go to the soldiers themselves, Bennett said. Where does the money go? Hyunseung Lee, a former soldier who defected from North Korea in the early 2000s, also offered a bleak assessment of the rewards North Korea’s soldiers would likely get by fighting against Ukraine. “They won’t be compensated,” he said in an interview with Radio Free Europe, adding that their families won’t be either. RAND’s Bennett said there’s another reason soldiers may not see much of the money. “Many of the soldiers will become fatalities and unable to use any money earned,” he said, though Kim may pass some of their earnings back to their families “in lieu of the loss of their sons.” However, the new cash flow could play an important role in North Korea, where GDP is estimated at just $40 billion. Kim Jong Un is known for his lavish tastes. In October, South Korean lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun said that North Korea had imported luxury goods worth almost $52 million in the first eight months of 2024 alone — including cosmetics, watches, and booze, the Korea Economic Daily reported. Yoon said that Kim gifts these luxury imports to the country’s elites to ensure their loyalty. Kim Jong Un at a lavish banquet to celebrate North Korea’s Navy Day last year.DPRK Carnegie Endowment Asia Program fellow Chung Min Lee wrote in April that “Kim, his family, and his closest advisers appear in public wearing very expensive watches, clothes, and handbags that are slowly becoming more available to the North Korean elite.” But he added that loyalty had waned significantly in recent years amid international sanctions and a marked economic decline resulting from Kim’s policy of plowing up to 30% of the country’s GDP into defense. Bennett estimates that some of the money received from Russia will go on military equipment and some on consumer goods such as food, “especially for the elites,” he said. Indeed, some of the payment may be directly in the form of food, he said. That’s important “because life is ********** in North Korea, creating a degree of public instability, and so Kim has tried to improve the availability of food and some other goods to avoid more open rebellion,” he said. Meanwhile, the North Korean soldiers heading to Russia face a worrying future. Ukraine’s allies have repeatedly said that North Korean troops fighting in Ukraine will become “cannon fodder” on the battlefield. Reports say that North Korea is sending its “Storm Corps,” an elite special-forces unit. But Lee, the former soldier, told Radio Free Europe that “they’re totally not ready.” He argued that the additional training they will get — reported to be just weeks, some of it done in live combat — is not enough to get familiar with the more high-tech equipment they will be expected to use. 3. AWS widening scope of MFA programme after early success AWS widening scope of MFA programme after early success Amazon Web Services (AWS) is to widen the scope of a mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA) programme it introduced earlier this year, after seeing strong uptake among customers and a slump in password-related phishing attacks. The cloud giant made MFA compulsory for management account root users in the AWS Management Console beginning in May 2024, starting with its largest accounts. In June, it added support for FIDO2 passkeys as an MFA method to give users more options, and expanded the original requirement to include root users in standalone accounts, too. According to AWS principal product manager of account protection Arynn Crow, over 750,000 root users have enabled MFA since April, with customer registration rates more than doubling since the addition of FIDO2 passkeys to the mix. She claimed the policy change had prevented “greater than 99%” of password-related attacks. “At AWS, we’ve built our services with secure-by-design principles from day one, including features that set a high bar for our customers’ default security posture,” said Crow. “Strong authentication is a foundational component in overall account security, and the use of MFA is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help prevent unauthorised individuals from gaining access to systems or data.” Based on this early success, AWS will now be expanding MFA requirements to member accounts in AWS organisations from Spring 2025. “Customers who have not enabled central management of root access will be required to register MFA for their AWS Organizations member account root users in order to access the AWS Management Console,” said Crow. “As with our previous expansions to management and standalone accounts, we will roll this change out gradually and notify individual customers who are required to take action in advance, to help customers adhere to the new requirements while minimising impact to their day-to-day operations.” No more passwords anymore On the back of its early successes with an MFA mandate, Crow said AWS was keen to do more to shore up security for its customers, and had recognised another opportunity to try to eliminate unnecessary passwords for good. She said that on top of the run-of-the-mill security issues seen with standard passwords, attempting to secure password-based authentication was introducing too much operational overhead for AWS customers, especially those operating at scale or subject to regulatory requirements to rotate their credentials frequently. As such, AWS has now launched a new capability to centrally manage root access for accounts managed in AWS Organizations, enabling them to cut down on the number of passwords they need to manage while still keeping control over the use of root principals. Crow explained that customers can now turn on centralised root access with a quick configuration change – either in the identity and access management console or the AWS command line interface – and then remove the long-term credentials of member account root users. “This will improve the security posture of our customers while simultaneously reducing their operational effort,” she concluded. 5. Roblox to restrict messaging for under 13s, launches new safety measures Roblox to restrict messaging for under 13s, launches new safety measures Roblox has announced new safety measures designed to protect young players on the popular gaming platform. In a blog post, the company said that over the coming months it will begin restricting communication features for children under the of age 13, while new parental control features and content guidelines have launched today. When the changes come into effect, users under the age of 13 will no longer be able to directly message others on Roblox outside of games. “In addition, we are introducing a built-in setting that will limit users under age 13 to public broadcast messages only within a game or experience,” said chief safety officer Matt Kaufman. “By default, users younger than 13 will not be able to directly message others. Parents can change this setting in Parental Controls.” Roblox has today launched remote management of parental controls. Previously, parental controls like spending limits needed to be managed from the child’s account. “Part of our long-term vision is to give parents granular controls to monitor and limit how much time their child spends on Roblox, which is something we’ve heard is important to parents,” said Kaufman. “In the Parental Controls dashboard, parents can now see their child’s average screen time over the past week, as well as their child’s friends list. Parents and caregivers can also set daily screen-time limits. Once the limit is reached, their child cannot access Roblox until the next day.” Roblox has also launched new descriptions for the types of content available, with experiences labelled by the type of content users can expect to find in them rather than by age. By default, users under the age of nine can only access experiences with a content label of ‘Minimal’ or ‘Mild’, unless parental controls are used to let them access more mature content. ‘Mild’ content “may contain repeated mild *********, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humor, and/or repeated mild *****,” according to Roblox. 6. Infinidat gets in on the RAG act with workflow architecture offer Infinidat gets in on the RAG act with workflow architecture offer Infinidat has launched a retrieval augmented generation (RAG) workflow architecture, deliverable as a consultancy service to its storage customers, which allows them to build in up-to-date, private data from multiple company data sources to artificial intelligence (AI) from any NFS storage in their organisation. The move reflects a trend that has seen multiple storage companies address AI workloads, and RAG issues – in particular in generative AI (GenAI) – that result when data used for training is incomplete, out of date or lacks the type of information that can only be gained from private data, such as within an organisation or from expert knowledge. When an organisation wants to develop GenAI, it puts a dataset through a training process in which the AI learns how to recognise particular attributes that can be used for information, or for triggers in applications. Those training processes are often built around datasets that are very general, can go out of date or perhaps initially lack specialised or private data. This is often the case with AI projects inside organisations that need to stay up to date over time, said Infinidat chief marketing officer Eric Herzog. “A lot of organisations are using generative AI as an internal project with private data,” said Herzog. “And as well as wanting to protect their IP, they have concerns about accuracy, avoiding hallucinations, etc. “For example, a large enterprise that generates vast amounts of data – in sales, support, operations – would want to boost the performance of what it is doing, and that’s very much tied to its storage performance. “The customer wants to see accurate data in near real time. It can use AI to understand the details – it might be screws in a component, the type, the supplier, any number of details – and be able to update that information on a continual basis.” What Infinidat now offers is professional services consulting to allow its customers to access data for RAG purposes from its own and other suppliers’ storage, as long as it is in NFS file storage format. According to Herzog, that comprises help with configuring the storage system to get at data and metadata rapidly for RAG purposes. He said Infinidat is well-positioned to do this because of the importance it places on metadata and the “neural cache” within its architecture and the InfuzeOS environment. Infinidat arrays can be all-flash or hybrid spinning disk and solid state, and are mostly targeted at high-end enterprise and service provider customers. Their hardware products feature triple-active controllers and use of a so-called neural cache that marshals data to the most appropriate media, with the bulk of I/O requests going via very fast DRAM, with a cache hit rate of more than 90% claimed. Infinidat’s focus here on RAG capabilities sees it join other storage suppliers that have recently made a push for customers embarking on AI projects. Pure Storage CEO Charlie Giancarlo was keen to highlight his company’s AI push at its Accelerate event in June, with storage write speed and availability emphasised. Meanwhile, NetApp launched a push towards data management for AI with the announcement of data classification for AI via its OnTap operating system at its annual Insight shindig in September. 7. What Q3 Earnings Say About Future Economic Conditions in Retail and Tech What Q3 Earnings Say About Future Economic Conditions in Retail and Tech Q3 S&P 500® EPS growth expected to come in at 5.4%, the fifth consecutive quarter of growth In focus earnings reports this week: Nvidia, Walmart, Lowe’s, TJX Companies, Target Large cap outlier earnings in the next two weeks: Bath & Body Works, Snowflake, Urban Outfitters The Q3 earnings season is coming to a close in its usual fashion, with a word from retailers. With 93% of companies reporting at this point, YoY S&P 500 EPS growth has settled around 5.4%, while revenue growth increased 5.5% for the quarter. The retailers will offer some much needed insight on the state of the US consumer when they report this week. While consumers have remained relatively resilient in the face of inflation over the last year, uncertainty still abounds, and a more cautious consumer has been noted by certain companies. Last week the retail party started with results from Home Depot (NYSE:) and Dillards Inc (NYSE:). Home Depot beat expectations on both the top and bottom-line for Q3, but noted customers were deferring big ticket projects. Department store, Dillard’s, was also able to beat analyst expectations on EPS and revenues, but reported YoY declines for both metrics. Same store sales were also down 4% from the year-ago quarter. A slightly more positive look at consumer spending came from Disney’s Q3 report. The media giant’s entertainment segment came in with revenue growth that increased 14% YoY. This segment includes traditional TV networks, direct-to-consumer streaming and films, showing consumers are willing to spend on entertainment. Even Walt Disney Company (NYSE:) experiences segment which includes theme parks and consumer products saw 1% revenue growth after posting a downturn last quarter. One big detriment to the retail industry has of course been inflation, and while it has improved it ******** stubborn as seen in last week’s figures for October. The 12-month inflation rate moved up to 2.6%, from 2.4% in September. A major contributor to this increase was sticky shelter prices which continued higher. Another potential area of concern for retailers is the proposed tariff policies by President Elect Donald Trump. The proposal includes a universal 10 – 20% tariff on imports from all foreign countries and an additional 60 – 100% on imports specifically from China. The National Retail (NYSE:) Federation recently reported that such tariff proposals could cost ********* consumers up to $78B in annual spending power. NRF Vice President of Supply Chain and Customs Policy, Jonathan Gold said “This tax ultimately comes out of consumers’ pockets through higher prices.” On this week’s earnings calls we’ll likely hear retailers’ plans on how they may deal with these potential tariffs. Event Cluster for Nvidia This week also brings highly-anticipated results from Nvidia (NASDAQ:). The AI darling will report Q3 results on Wednesday, Nov 20. The stock has rallied 205% YTD on the back of AI demand. Last month Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC that its Blackwell chip is in full production and that demand was “insane.” Along with its upcoming earnings call, we’ve noticed Nvidia participating in a lot of prominent tech conferences in the last month, continuing to establish itself as a leader in the AI space. Wall Street Horizon has found that while a standalone event such as a company’s upcoming earnings release date may affect volatility, investigating multiple events closely in relationship to one another can give a more complete picture of a company’s financial health. Observing the information pre-event, during the event and post-event and how they interact can be critical to understand how events relate to trading and risk strategies. Just this month alone leaders at NVDA have spoken at six conferences, with two more slated for November 20. Source: Event Dates from Wall Street Horizon, Stock Prices from TMX Money Outlier Earnings Dates for the Rest of the Q3 Season Academic research shows that when a company confirms a quarterly earnings date that is later than when they have historically reported, it’s typically a sign that the company will share bad news on their upcoming call, while moving a release date earlier suggests the opposite. 9. Overwatch 2 Needs a Critical Feature That is Present in Almost Every Live Service Game Overwatch 2 Needs a Critical Feature That is Present in Almost Every Live Service Game There’s no doubt that Overwatch 2‘s journey has been riddled by both triumphs and controversies. From the initial disappointment over the cancellation of PvE missions to divisive core gameplay changes, the game has constantly faced scrutiny, with many in the community believing Blizzard has ruined the series. The hero-shooter is once again waves in the gaming community thanks to meaningful additions. (Image via Microsoft) Overwatch 2 has been gaining steam in the last couple of months, all thanks to new updates, heroes, and, most crucially, Overwatch Classic. It’s great to see that Blizzard is finally recognizing what the community demands. However, it’s still mind-boggling how the developer doesn’t have one of the most useful features that can be found in any live-service game on day one of launch! Can Blizzard Finally Add the Zoom System in Overwatch 2 Shop? Overwatch 2 has detailed skins that look absolutely stunning. (Image via Microsoft) Despite its issues, Overwatch 2 has given us an enjoyable team-based FPS where even the most casual players can have a good time playing their favorite heroes. One of the most satisfying parts of the game is unlocking an amazing skin for your Overwatch main! With the sequel, Blizzard has amped up the skin game and brings us tons of new additions every month. As you ***** into the hero-shooter, you’ll be spoilt for a choice with a number of skins ranging from sleek futurism to mythical grandeur. There’s one problem, though; when you’re purchasing in the game’s shop, you can’t zoom in and see every detail of the skin you’re about to invest in. You might think that there’s no point in such a feature because who really zooms in and looks into the details of a skin? However, considering the fact that some skins Overwatch 2 can cost an arm and leg, many in the community want to inspect every intricate detail and unique feature before they hit the purchase button. It’s a quality-of-life feature in any live service game that allows players to appreciate premium skins and helps create an immersive experience. With the game’s upward trajectory in recent months, it can help Blizzard push newer players to the shop, as they’ll be able to make informed decisions about the cosmetics they want to purchase. Let’s hope the company can add this much-needed quality-of-life feature and many other things before the next in-game season begins. Overwatch Might Be Soon Coming to Mobile The game’s arrival on mobile devices could prove to be a risky endeavor for the developer. (Image via Microsoft) Even though Blizzard has done some incredible work with Overwatch 2, the fact is that the game is nowhere in terms of popularity when compared to the original game. The developer is well aware of this fact and is planning to turn things around for the hero-shooter with a mobile port. There’s a massive market for FPS games on mobile as titles such as PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile have lured millions of players across the world. Given the hero shooter’s solid reputation, bringing it to mobiles is risky but might work out big in the long run. The surprising news comes from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier’s third book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. Considering Schreier’s reputation as one of the most reputable insiders in the video game industry, there’s a high chance that this project is indeed in development. While having a mobile version of the hero-shooter might prove to be great, its existence will only amplify Overwatch 2‘s existing problem. The developer should focus more on fixing the game’s damaged reputation by bringing more meaningful updates and even re-evaluating its monetization model instead of chasing industry trends. With that said, do you think there are any other quality-of-life features Overwatch 2 needs? Let us know in the comments below. Xi Jinping acknowledges ‘twists and turns’ and calls for ‘great care’ in G20 meeting with Anthony Albanese Xi Jinping acknowledges ‘twists and turns’ and calls for ‘great care’ in G20 meeting with Anthony Albanese Rio de Janeiro: Xi Jinping has acknowledged the “twists and turns” in Beijing’s relationship with Australia, telling Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “great care” needs to be taken to maintain the partnership. The ******** President told Mr Albanese while there had been a “turnaround” in relations, he wanted the pair to keep working to make the relationship “more mature, stable and fruitful, and inject more stability and certainty to the region and the wider world”. The meeting, at Mr Xi’s hotel in Rio de Janeiro, came ahead of the G20 leaders’ summit where global security, climate change and trade will be leaders’ key priorities. In their opening remarks, Mr Xi and Mr Albanese both recognised their meeting marked ten years of the comprehensive strategic partnership. Mr Xi said the relationship had been through a lot in the last decade, but that his discussions with the PM “were very productive over the past year and more”. “Over the past decade, we have made some progress in China-Australia relations and also witnessed some twists and turns,” Mr Xi said. “Now, our relations have realised a turnaround and continues to grow, bringing tangible benefits to our two peopleles. This is the result of our collective hard work in the same direction, and should be maintained with great care.” Camera IconPrime Minister Anthony Albanese met with ******** President Xi Jinping at the G20 sidelines in Rio de Janeiro. Canada Post says ‘parties remain far apart’ as strike continues – National Canada Post says ‘parties remain far apart’ as strike continues – National Canada Post and its workers’ union are entering a fresh round of mediated negotiations as a nationwide postal strike enters its fourth day Both sides return to the bargaining table Monday with a special mediator, Peter Simpson, who was appointed by the federal government last week. “The focus of the special mediator is for the parties to reach a deal,” Matthieu Perrotin, press secretary for Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, said in a statement to Global News on Monday. “Canadians are counting on the parties to reach a deal. Negotiated agreements are always the best way forward.” More than 55,000 Canada Post workers went on strike Friday, halting mail and parcel services across the country. Some post offices have also been shuttered amid the job action. 16. Nvidia stock sinks on reports of Blackwell AI server issues ahead of earnings Nvidia stock sinks on reports of Blackwell AI server issues ahead of earnings Nvidia (NVDA) stock sank as much as 3% early Monday following a new report from The Information, which highlighted overheating issues with its latest Blackwell AI servers. The news also comes ahead of the AI chipmaker’s earnings report, which is slated for release after the market close on Wednesday. The news is not the first time issues have been reported with the company’s Blackwell products. In August, The Information reported that the leading AI chipmaker was dealing with design flaws related to the individual Blackwell chips themselves. Nvidia confirmed fears that Blackwell production would be delayed in its earnings report in late August, stating that production of the chips would ramp up in the December quarter, rather than its previously-stated goal to ramp during the September *******. The company has not publicly confirmed any design flaws or overheating issues, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Yahoo Finance’s request for comment Monday. Those Blackwell chips are set to bring in “several billion dollars” in sales in the fourth quarter, according to CEO Jensen Huang. Customers looking to use the 72-chip rack include Meta (META), Microsoft (MSFT), and Elon Musk’s xAI, according to The Information. As Yahoo Finance’s Dan Howley noted last week, even a stellar report and outlook from the company could send its stock down. Nvidia topped expectations across the board in its most recent quarter, for example, but shares still fell 6% immediately after it announced its results. Investor excitement over AI spending has also stoked fears Big Tech’s AI spending will ease — or sharply decline — punching AI chip companies in the gut. NVIDIA logo is seen near computer motherboard. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo · REUTERS / Reuters Such fears were on display last Friday, when chip stocks fell across the board after a disappointing earnings report from Applied Materials (AMAT), which makes tech used by TSMC (TSM) to manufacture advanced computing chips such as Nvidia’s. Nvidia shares closed Friday down 3.3%, while the PHLX Semiconductor Index (^SOX) fell 3.4%. Still, Nvidia shares are up roughly 186% from last year. The chipmaker’s monumental rise has pushed it past Apple (AAPL) as the world’s most valuable company, and Nvidia recently replaced Intel on the Dow. Laura Bratton is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. 20. Investing in Software: Time to Buy These Up-and-Coming Firms? Investing in Software: Time to Buy These Up-and-Coming Firms? Software (ETR:) companies as a group have trended higher late in 2024, perhaps in anticipation of ******* regulations in a second Trump administration. Smaller firms operating in the SaaS, data analysis, and cybersecurity spaces have potential to capitalize on this trend. At the same time, these firms must face larger, established competitors in a bid to continue to scale their operations and customer bases. The software portion of the larger tech industry has recently experienced a sharp upward swing. A benchmark ETF, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (NYSE:), has climbed by nearly 38% in the last year, with more than a quarter of that increase in the month from mid-October to mid-November. This coincides with the ******* immediately surrounding the presidential election and may reflection an expectation of a ******* regulatory environment going forward, largely seen as a potential boon for software developers. Amid the broader rally, several niche software companies may warrant further investigation by investors considering a focus on this industry. 1. MDB: Leading Product in a Competitive Space MongoDB (NASDAQ:) provides software platforms for companies to use to store and analyze data more effectively. It offers a database-as-a-service tool, MongoDB Atlas (NYSE:), that allows clients from many different industries to manage databases remotely via the cloud. For the second quarter of its 2025 fiscal year, MongoDB reported excellent workload acquisition, contributing to 13% year-over-year improvement to overall revenue. Atlas made up more than 70% of the $478 million in revenue the company generated during the year. While net losses widened slightly to $54.5 million, the company ended the quarter with a strong cash position of $2.3 billion. MongoDB is positioning itself well in a rapidly growing, though niche, NoSQL database industry that is expected to reach more than $82 billion in size by 2031. On the other hand, though, the company will have to contend with significantly larger rivals that are also exploring offerings in the same space. Most notable in this category is Amazon.com’s (NASDAQ:) DynamoDB. MongoDB has a “moderate buy” rating with 20 out of 26 analysts recommending that investors purchase shares. The consensus price target for MDB is $334.25, 14.1% higher than current levels. 2. CHKP: Cybersecurity Strength, But Recent Dip May Mean Buy Opportunity (SO:) Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ:) creates cybersecurity software and a range of related products and services. In the latest quarter, the company posted 7% overall revenue growth to $635 million, including 12% year-over-year subscription revenue growth, even as Check Point executives acknowledged that several deals had been pushed to the fourth quarter and would be reflected in a later earnings report. Despite this setback, Check Point reiterated its guidance of $2.5 billion in revenue for the year and net profit of over $1 billion. The company has also posted ****** margin of 89% even as operating expenses have increased. This is all to say that Check Point has solid fundamentals and a popular cybersecurity product lineup. Nonetheless, shares of CHKP fell following the earnings announcement in late October. This is understandable given that the report did not dramatically exceed expectations and that the company’s stock traded around a 1-year high throughout most of the month in anticipation of new executive leadership. Now, even though Bank of America has recently downgraded Check Point to “neutral” from “buy” previously, a relatively lower share price means analysts see shares rising by about 12%. This could be an opportune moment for investors to buy in. 3. TYL: Promising Trends But Mixed Earnings Tyler Technologies (NYSE:) provides software and services to public sector organizations to aid in cybersecurity efforts, data analysis, payments solutions, and more. In the latest quarter, Tyler’s revenue climbed by almost 10% year-over-year, driven by increased demand for its software-as-a-service (SaaS) options. Transaction revenues grew by more than 15% thanks to higher volumes from both new and returning customers. These signs point to Tyler’s successful implementation of its cloud-based strategy, which it intends to continue to develop going forward. And yet, there are reasons to be cautious as well: while the company boosted its guidance range for GAAP diluted EPS for 2024, it reduced its expected free cash margin and slightly lowered the top end of its full-year revenue guidance as well. Assessing Risk As each of the firms above contests with larger, more established rivals, there is both the potential for growth and the risk of ******** to overcome these obstacles. Each of the companies has analyst votes of confidence, but each also has potential disadvantages for an investor as well. 23. What we learned in NFL Week 11: Bills get gutsy, Steelers make a statement What we learned in NFL Week 11: Bills get gutsy, Steelers make a statement Josh Allen tried to claim that Sunday’s date with the Kansas City Chiefs was just “a Week 11 game.” The Bills quarterback sat before the cameras in the days leading up to Buffalo’s showdown with the two-time defending champs and said it was “no ******* or no less (important) than the last 10 games we’ve had.” On paper, perhaps. In reality, no way. The Chiefs have sent the Bills home in the playoffs three times in the last four years. Kansas City ******** the biggest roadblock for Buffalo in the franchise’s pursuit of its first Super Bowl title. This year’s matchup carried with it immense postseason implications: the Chiefs entered a perfect 9-0, while the Bills were 8-2. The winner could very well end up earning the AFC’s No. 1 seed and coveted playoff bye. Allen’s play Sunday in Orchard Park, especially on the signature snap of Buffalo’s season to date, spoke to how badly the Bills want it. On a fourth-and-2 with 2:26 left and the Bills leading by two, Allen charged through the teeth of the Kansas City defense for an MVP-caliber, 26-yard touchdown run. Six snaps later, the Bills intercepted Patrick Mahomes to seal the 30-21 victory, dealing the Chiefs their first loss of the season and giving the Bills a critical boost in their pursuit of the AFC’s top seed. “Knowing how things usually go, we’ll probably see this team again at some point,” Allen said afterward. GO DEEPER NFL Week 11 takeaways: Bills make case as AFC’s best team, Bo Nix rookie of the year? On the topic of potential No. 1 seeds, Detroit continues to look like the most complete team in the league. The Lions were so dominant Sunday that they might’ve expedited Doug Pederson’s exit in Jacksonville. A 52-6 loss — the worst in the Jaguars’ 29-year franchise history — could end up being the final straw for the veteran coach. After the embarrassment, Pederson, whose seat has warmed considerably in recent weeks as his team dropped four straight, was asked about his job security. “I can’t control that,” he told reporters. About a year ago, the Jaguars were 8-3 and in contention for the AFC’s top seed. They’re 3-13 since. The Lions, meanwhile, are 9-1 for the first time in 90 years. In Tennessee, the Vikings (8-2) stayed a game behind Detroit in the NFC North with a 23-13 victory over the Titans. It’s Minnesota’s third straight win after consecutive losses in late October. If the NFC North ******** the deepest division in football — three teams are 7-3 or better — then the NFC West ******** the most jumbled. Seattle’s 20-17 win over San Francisco on Sunday means the Seahawks, 49ers and Rams are now 5-5, with the Cardinals (6-4) just a game ahead. In Miami, the Dolphins won for the second week in a row, beating the Raiders 34-19. After starting 2-6, Mike McDaniel’s team has rallied to keep its once-slim playoff hopes alive. Miami will face the Patriots next week for a chance to claim a third straight. Those Patriots will be coming off a 28-22 loss to the Rams despite a career-best 282 passing yards from rookie quarterback Drake Maye. The issue Sunday wasn’t Maye, despite his game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter, but instead L.A. quarterback Matthew Stafford, who lit up the New England defense for four touchdowns. Puka Nacua finished with a game-high 123 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Cooper Kupp added 106 and two scores of his own. In New Orleans, the Saints rode the full Taysom Hill Experience to rout the Browns, 35-14, their second straight win with interim coach Darren Rizzi. Hill did it all — a career-high 138 rushing yards and three touchdowns, plus 50 more in the air on eight catches. He also returned a kickoff 42 yards and completed a pass for 18. Here’s what we learned across the NFL in Week 11: McDermott plays to win Entering Sunday, the Chiefs hadn’t lost since Christmas Day — a span of 15 games. They hadn’t given up more than 28 points since Super Bowl LVII — a span of 30 games. They had somehow rallied to win nine straight when trailing by seven or more — the longest such streak in NFL history. Those streaks are finished, and the Chiefs have suffered their first loss of 2024. “We’ll get back to work and try to use this as a spark so we can be a better football team in the end,” Mahomes said. “Great game to learn from for some of our young guys,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid added. “When two good teams play each other, the margin between winning and losing is small.” The Bills have now won four straight over the Chiefs in the regular season, but the rivalry’s narrative won’t change until they win one of these in January. Buffalo is just a half-game back of Kansas City (9-1) in the current playoff race, and the Bills (9-2) own the first tiebreaker via the head-to-head victory. Credit Bills coach Sean McDermott for the gutsy call at the end when choosing to go for it on that fourth-and-2 from the Chiefs’ 26-yard-line with 2:26 left. A field goal would’ve given the Bills a 5-point lead, but McDermott knew a field goal likely wouldn’t be enough. Not against that coach and that quarterback. “There have been too many games when Andy and Patrick have come back,” McDermott said later. So he put the ball in the hands of his best player. Allen responded with an emphatic touchdown run, a play only a few other quarterbacks in the league can make — if any. “Would have stood by (the decision) if it didn’t work out,” McDermott added. That’s the right mindset to beat the Chiefs when it really counts. This felt like an AFC North throwback. Defense ruled. Points came at a premium. It went down to the wire. It took six field goals from kicker Chris Boswell, two first-quarter missed kicks from Justin Tucker, a rare fumble from Derrick Henry and a stop on a two-point conversion with 1:09 left. In the end, the Steelers maintained their place atop the division — and stayed in the running for the AFC’s top seed. It wasn’t pretty, but Mike Tomlin’s team isn’t apologizing. The Steelers’ 18-16 victory over the Ravens is their fifth straight win and fourth since quarterback Russell Wilson stepped into the starting role. Pittsburgh (8-2) currently owns the third-best record in the AFC, behind only Kansas City and Buffalo. More than anything, this was a statement by the Steelers’ defense: the Ravens entered the game leading the league in a number of offensive categories, including scoring, total yards, rushing yards and red-zone efficiency. Lamar Jackson was earning significant MVP chatter, and deservedly so. But Pittsburgh’s second-rated scoring defense forced three turnovers and held the Ravens, who’ve averaged nearly 35 points a game over the last month, to just two touchdowns. On the game-deciding 2-point conversion try, linebacker Nick Herbig and cornerback Joey Porter, Jr. pressured Jackson — typically lethal on two-point tries — into a desperation throw that went nowhere. The Steelers are rolling. With two games coming up against the Browns and a date with the Bengals sandwiched in between, they’ll likely remain in front of the AFC North as we inch into December. Chargers hold off Bengals comeback Outside of the splashy hire of Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers did very little in terms of headline-grabbing moves in the offseason. They were quiet in free agency, signing B-list veterans like Gus Edwards, Denzel Perryman and Hayden Hurst. They said goodbye to their top two receivers by releasing Mike Williams and trading Keenan Allen to Chicago. They kept veteran pass rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack but convinced both to take pay cuts and drafted an offensive tackle — Notre Dame’s Joe Alt — fifth. On paper, this is mostly the same team that finished 5-12 in 2023 and got Brandon Staley fired 14 games into the season. But the eye test doesn’t match up. Harbaugh’s version looks like a contender because no other coach in the sport rebuilds faster. The Chargers are now 7-3 after a wild win over the Bengals Sunday night. Up 27-6 early in the third, L.A. withstood 21 straight from the Bengals, then rallied with an 84-yard drive in 27 seconds to finish off the 34-27 victory. With 26 seconds left, J.K. Dobbins burst through the Cincinnati defense for a 29-yard game-winning run. Justin Herbert, who finished 17 of 36 for 297 yards and two touchdowns, connected on two deep throws to get the Chargers in scoring range before Dobbins ended it. The game felt like it was over before Joe Burrow started heating up. And no matter what Cincinnati’s record is, Burrow at his best is still good enough to carve up any secondary in the league. He did that most of the second half Sunday, avoiding about a dozen sacks and finding Tee Higgins deep for one touchdown and Ja’Marr Chase for two more. But two late misses from kicker Evan McPherson — one from 48 yards, one from 51 — proved costly. For a minute it looked like the Bengals (4-7) were going to pull off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history. Instead, it’s their sixth one-score loss of the season. The Chargers have their fourth win in a row, and suddenly, they’re just two games back of the Chiefs in the AFC West. Richardson, Williams bounce back Following a tumultuous month, two young quarterbacks badly needed bounce-back games Sunday. Both got them. But only one left with a win. The Colts’ Anthony Richardson, benched the past two weeks for veteran Joe Flacco, returned to the starting role Sunday against the Jets and delivered one of the best games of his young career in a 28-27 win over the Jets. Richardson flashed the type of talent that led the Colts to draft him fourth in 2023 with his 272 passing yards — on a 66.7 completion percentage — and two bruising touchdown runs, the second of which provided the game’s deciding points. He is a physical specimen the league has rarely seen at quarterback. “It’s pretty cool, especially to do it against the Jets and Aaron Rodgers,” Richardson said after the first game-winning touchdown of his young career. “I’ve been watching him since I was a ****. So, it’s a blessing just to be able go against a legend.” The win snaps a three-game skid for the Colts (5-6), who remain alive in the AFC wild-card race. As for the Jets, it’s the latest ***** in what’s become a lost season. New York is now 3-8, 1-5 since ******* coach Robert Saleh. Anthony Richardson led the Colts on the first game-winning drive of his career on Sunday. (Al Bello / Getty Images) In Chicago, Caleb Williams played his best game in a month, and the Bears’ offense found new life after the ******* of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. All of which made the result — a 20-19 loss to the Packers — even more gutting. Three weeks after their Hail Mary loss in Washington, the Bears suffered more last-second heartache. Maybe this team is cursed. Williams drove Chicago 42 yards on seven plays to set up a 46-yard field goal attempt from Cairo Santos that would’ve won it as time expired. But Green Bay defensive end Karl Brooks penetrated Chicago’s line just enough to get a finger on the kick, and his block sealed the Packers’ win. It’s Green Bay’s 11th straight victory over its longtime rival and keeps Packers coach Matt LaFleur a perfect 11-0 in the series. Even in defeat — Chicago’s fourth in a row — there were positives for the Bears. Williams ran for a season-high 70 yards and threw for 231, his highest since Week 5. It was a strong debut from new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, who got Williams going with some quick throws and helped revive a run game that piled up 179 yards. The Bears were also much more efficient on third down: after converting 6 of 40 the last three games, they were 9 of 16 Sunday. And the Bears’ streak of 25 straight drives without scoring a touchdown is finally over. Nix cuts into Daniels’ Offensive Rookie of the Year lead For a stretch, it seemed like the Offensive Rookie of the Year race was Jayden Daniels’ to lose, and it still might be. But another quarterback has, at the very least, climbed into the conversation. And it’s not Williams, last spring’s No. 1 pick. Bo Nix has been excellent of late and shined in the Broncos’ 38-6 rout of the Falcons on Sunday, Denver’s biggest win at home in a decade. The Oregon product missed just five throws all day, finishing 28 of 33 for 307 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Nix’s 84.8 completion percentage is the third-highest for a rookie QB (minimum 30 attempts) in NFL history, and he joined Peyton Manning as the only rookie QB with at least 200 passing yards and multiple touchdowns in four straight home games. Nix just might be the quarterback the Broncos have been looking for since Manning left. A rebuild that was supposed to take some time is coming together quickly. Nix has had a lot to do with that. Stats never tell the full story — both rookies have been instrumental in turning their teams around this season — but Nix’s numbers stack up well against Daniels’. Nix has thrown for 2,275 passing yards with a 66 completion percentage, piled up 18 touchdowns and thrown four interceptions in the Broncos’ 6-5 start. Daniels has 2,338 passing yards with a 69 completion percentage, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions for the 7-4 Commanders. Most importantly for Denver, after a pair of losses to Super Bowl contenders in Baltimore and Kansas City, the Broncos rebounded in a big way. If the playoffs started today, they would own the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC. (Photo: Justin K. 24. Senator Accuses Valve Of Allowing Hate To Spread On Steam Senator Accuses Valve Of Allowing Hate To Spread On Steam Since its launch in 2003, Steam has grown to become one of the biggest digital stores for PC games. But bringing so many players together has also had some unexpected consequences in the real world. Now, Virginia Senator Mark Warner is accusing Steam’s parent company, Valve, of allowing hate speech, white-supremacist content, and even comments praising terrorists to go unchallenged by the company. Warner shared his letter with Bloomberg, and addressed his concerns to Valve co-founder Game Newell. Citing a recent report from the Anti-Defamation League’s Center for Extremism, Warner writes that Steam has become “an unsafe place for teens and young adults to purchase and play online games” and adds that if the Valve fails to address these issues then it will allow “harmful ideologies to spread and take root among the next generation.” The report mentioned by Warner reportedly identified 1.83 million instances of extremist or hateful content on Steam. Some of examples include ***** imagery, tributes to individual terrorists, and support for ********** groups like ISIS. Earlier this year, a Turkish teenager planned a ****** ******* with someone he met on Steam before carrying out his plans in August while wearing a neo-***** symbol. In his letter, Warner promised “more intense scrutiny from the federal government” while alleging that Steam’s “complicity in allowing hate groups to congregate and engage in activities that undoubtedly puts Americans at risk.” The senator also requested information about Valve’s moderation policies and its commitment to fighting hate content. Earlier this year, Steam got ahead of a new California law by changing the way it lists games online. In accordance with the law that won’t go into effect until 2025, Steam now explicitly states that players are buying a license for the games they purchase, rather than actually owning the games themselves. 25. Ugandan TikToker jailed for 32 months for insulting President Yoweri Museveni Ugandan TikToker jailed for 32 months for insulting President Yoweri Museveni A 21-year-old has become the latest Ugandan TikToker to be sent to prison after creating a video that was said to insult President Yoweri Museveni. Emmanuel Nabugodi appeared for the sentencing on Monday after pleading guilty last week to four charges, including hate speech and spreading malicious information about the president. He was sentenced to 32 months in jail. Nabugodi, known for sharing comedy content to his 20,000 followers, made a film of a mock trial of the head of state. In it he called for Museveni’s public flogging. Rights groups have frequently complained about restrictions on the freedom of speech in the country, alleging that the president – in power since 1986 – does not tolerate criticism. In July, Edward Awebwa was handed a six-year sentence on similar charges to Nabugodi regarding a TikTok post. Three others are awaiting trial over content on the social media app. When handing down Nabugodi’s sentence, Stellah Maris Amabilis, the chief magistrate of the court in Entebbe, said he was not remorseful and the sentence would serve in helping to stop social media attacks against people including the person of the president. “This court hopes that by the time the convict leaves prison, he would have learnt that abusing people in the name of getting content is bad,” she said. She added that he had the right to appeal against the sentence within 14 days. He was convicted under a controversial amendment in 2022 to the Computer Misuse Act. It made it ******** to “write, send, or share any information through a computer, which is likely to ridicule, degrade, or demean another person, group of persons, a tribe, an ethnicity, a religion or gender”. In its human rights report on Uganda last year, the US State Department said the “authorities used this law to intimidate internet users from criticizing government policies”. Rights groups also regularly denounce the Ugandan authorities over violations of human rights and the freedom of expression. In 2022, award-winning Ugandan author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was charged with two counts of “offensive communication” after making unflattering remarks about the president and his son on Twitter. He fled the country to Germany after spending a month in jail, where he said he had been tortured.
