China’s national consumer price index (CPI) in February fell into negative territory for the first time since January last year, weighed down by a decline in food, tobacco and alcohol prices.
The CPI declined by 0.7% last month from a year earlier, data published Sunday by China’s National Bureau of Statistics showed, reversing a year-on-year gain of 0.5% in January.
The reading missed estimates of an annualized contraction of 0.5%, according to a Reuters poll of economists.
China’s CPI in February fell 0.2% on a monthly basis, meanwhile, compared to a rise of 0.7% in January.
The data comes as investors continue to look for signs that Beijing’s stimulus measures can help to boost the country’s economic recovery.
China on Wednesday set its GDP target for 2025 at “around 5%” and laid out plans to stabilize economic growth by propping up domestic demand.
Beijing also revised down its annual consumer price inflation target to “around 2%” — the lowest in more than two decades — from 3% or higher in prior years, according to the Asia Society Policy Institute.
The new inflation goal would act more as a ceiling than a target to be realized.
Econmists say China’s growth target of around 5% this year may be challenging to achieve, particularly amid persistently weak domestic consumption and an escalating trade dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

Monster Hunter Wilds Ditches a Tiring Trope And It’s a Step in the Right Direction For Immersion
Monster Hunter Wilds Ditches a Tiring Trope And It’s a Step in the Right Direction For Immersion
Monster Hunter games have been known for pitting players against insurmountable odds. Whether it’s the challenge of facing large enemies or just the sheer number of smaller monsters, the series has always excelled at overwhelming players with some of the most intense and enjoyable content in gaming.
The game has been grabbing players’ attention since its launch. | Image Credit: Capcom
So when Monster Hunter Wilds was released, players expected the same adrenaline rush content, with the signature extra layer of challenge. But to many’s surprise, the title offers a different, more immersive approach. This shift is a welcome change for the gameplay balance and invites new players.
Monster Hunter Wilds is breaking the cycle of forced chaos
In the past, stepping into a hunting ground felt like entering a battle royale, where every creature, no matter the size, shape, or natural instincts would attack the hunter, even if it meant teaming with its natural predator.
If a second monster appeared (regardless of the natural food chain), it usually meant a brutal two-on-one situation where the hunter had to either endure a long and exhausting fight or desperately find a way to separate them.
Due to these mechanics, even smaller creatures can become an annoyance. No doubt, this mechanic added tension, but it often felt unnatural and unfair, especially when it made little sense for certain monsters to team up. The result was an experience that leaned more into frustration than a fair challenge.
However, in Monster Hunter Wilds, monsters now behave and feel like they are in actual wildlife. If a second large monster appears, it’s more likely to engage in a turf war rather than instantly gang up on the hunter.
Even smaller monsters, rather than attacking the player, sometimes target the larger creatures instead, creating a more dynamic and believable ecosystem. This is a welcome change as it allows players to think and act dynamically, immersing them in the world.
The series has found a balance between challenge and fairness
Players are not happy with the changed mechanics. | Image Credit: Capcom
Some players have been upset about these changes, arguing that this shift makes the game too easy, removing the sense of overwhelming danger that past titles thrived on.
However, if the same players actually take a minute to think about it, this change in Wilds isn’t necessarily making the game easier, it’s just changing how the difficulty is presented.
Comment byu/Charrikayu from discussion inMonsterHunter
Comment byu/Charrikayu from discussion inMonsterHunter
Comment byu/Charrikayu from discussion inMonsterHunter
Instead of making players battle in an unfair two-on-one, the challenge now comes from the monsters themselves. The monsters have been given better tools to fight back, rather than relying on sheer numbers to overwhelm hunters.
By removing the trope of every monster vs. the hunter, Monster Hunter Wilds is aiming to create a world that feels more alive, more natural, and ultimately more enjoyable and immersive to hunt in.
For those who are still on the fence, the game still has that signature intense, high-stakes battles (the numbers don’t lie), but now they happen in a way that feels more organic and rewarding. So players should also try to appreciate how the game’s mechanics are evolving, rather than simply reminiscing about past titles.

Syrian security forces accused of killing hundreds of civilians
Syrian security forces accused of killing hundreds of civilians
Syrian security forces are alleged to have killed hundreds of civilians belonging to the Alawite ********* group in continuing violence along the country’s coast, according to a war monitoring group.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said some 745 civilians had been killed in around 30 “massacres” targeting Alawites on Friday and Saturday.
BBC News has not been able to independently verify these claims.
Hundreds of people have reportedly fled their homes in the region – a heartland of deposed president Bashar al-Assad, who also belongs to the Alawite sect.
A total of more than 1,000 people have been killed in the past two days, the SOHR said, in what is the worst violence in Syria since rebels toppled the Assad regime in December.
This figure includes dozens of government troops and gunmen loyal to Assad, who have been locked in clashes in the coastal Latakia and Tartous provinces since Thursday.
Some 125 members of the Islamist-led government security forces and 148 pro-Assad fighters have been killed in the violence, according to the SOHR’s report.
A Syrian defence ministry spokesman told the country’s Sana news agency that the government had re-established control after “treacherous attacks” against its security personnel.
The violence has left the Alawite community in “a state of horror”, an activist in the city told the BBC on Friday, with hundreds of people reportedly fleeing affected areas.
Large crowds sought refuge at a Russian military base at Hmeimim in Latakia, according to the Reuters news agency.
Video footage shared by Reuters showed dozens of people chanting “people want Russian protection” outside the base.
Meanwhile, dozens of families have fled to neighbouring Lebanon, according to local media.
The UN’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said he was “deeply alarmed” by “very troubling reports of civilian casualties” in Syria’s coastal areas.
He called on all sides to refrain from actions which could “destabilise” the country and jeopardise a “credible and inclusive political transition”.
Alawites, whose sect is an offshoot of Shia Islam, make up around 10% of Syria’s population, which is majority Sunni *******.

Bridget McKenzie claims ‘knob’ comment could derail Trump tariff talks
Bridget McKenzie claims ‘knob’ comment could derail Trump tariff talks
A state premier’s rogue remark calling US Vice President JD Vance a “knob” could influence whether Australia gets exempted from sweeping Trump administration tariffs set to kick in this week, according to a senior coalition senator.
Western *********** Premier Roger Cook, who just secured a landslide victory at the state polls, made the comment during a pre-election event earlier this week.
He has since brushed it off as a “lighthearted, non-professional moment” and said he “didn’t mean any offence”.
But opposition infrastructure spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie on Sunday said the “juvenile” joke threatened Australia’s standing with the US.
Camera IconCoalition frontbencher Bridget McKenzie says Mr Cook’s ‘juvenile’ joke threatens Australia’s standing with the US. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia
“I don’t think calling the Vice President of America a knob whilst the ******** are circumnavigating and just off the coast here in WA was the best strategy,” she told Sky News when asked for her thoughts on the tariff talks.
She acknowledged that Mr Cook did not represent the federal government, but suggested the Trump administration would not know the difference.
“America doesn’t look at it like (that),” Senator McKenzie said.
“This is our most important ally. The Coalition was able to secure an exemption when we were in government, when this last came up … but it was all based on relationships.”
She said Mr Cook’s comment was part of a pattern of unsavoury remarks from Labor about Donald Trump.
“You’ve got an ambassador that’s trash talked President Trump,” Senator McKenzie continued.
“You’ve got a prime minister who said he’s scared, (a) foreign affairs minister whose language was also pretty loose in the past about current President Trump, and then you’ve had the Premier’s comments.”
Kevin Rudd, Australia’s ambassador to the US, has over the years called the US President a “village ******”, “nuts”, the “most destructive president in history” and a “traitor to the West”.
In 2017, Anthony Albanese joked during a Q&A at a music festival that Mr Trump “scares the sh*t out of me”, adding that he thought “it’s of some concern the leader of the free world thinks that you can conduct politics through 140 characters on Twitter overnight”.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Mr Trump “was prepared to trash alliances and partnerships for personal political interest” in a 2021 interview.
“We don’t need juvenile responses with our most important ally at a serious geo-strategic moment,” Senator McKenzie said.
But Mr Trump is no stranger to insults — Mr Vance once compared him to Adolf Hitler.
The Albanese government has insisted relationship building with the new administration has been progressing well, with Washington hosting several cabinet ministers for high level talks.

Mr Cook’s description of Mr Vance made international headlines.
It came days after Mr Vance and Mr Trump berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a broadcast exchange at the White House.
At the pre-election event in Perth, a journalist asked Mr Cook to finish the sentence: “JD Vance is a …”
“Knob,” he replied, sparking laughter and applause.
He also said the Trump administration represented an “uncertain” road.

Scott Galloway says tech CEOs are playing what he calls ‘cowardice domino’
Scott Galloway says tech CEOs are playing what he calls ‘cowardice domino’
Scott Galloway, host of The Prof G Pod, ripped into tech CEOs during his SXSW talk on Saturday.
Galloway said tech leaders are playing “dominos of cowardice,” each one following the other.
He said he refused to normalize actions taken by Elon Musk.
Since Donald Trump’s victory, tech CEOs have graced the President’s inauguration, Jeff Bezos overhauled The Washington Post’s op-ed section, and X CEO Linda Yaccarino reportedly pressed one of the world’s biggest ad groups to increase spending on Elon Musk‘s X.
What do these seemingly disparate events have in common?
Scott Galloway, NYU Stern marketing professor and host of The Prof G Pod, said business leaders — particularly tech CEOs — are complacently participating in America’s “slow road to fascism.”
During his SXSW talk on Saturday in Austin, Galloway said tech leaders enormously influence society and that their “character matters.”
But so far, Galloway said, “We have seen an extraordinary kind of what I call ‘cowardice domino,'” displaying a slide image of prominent tech leaders represented as said dominos, including Jeff Bezos, Satya Nadella, Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Musk, Tim Cook, and Yaccarino.
Spokespeople for The Washington Post, Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta, Alphabet, and Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Galloway said examples of the “dominos of cowardice” included business leaders texting his co-host on the tech podcast Pivot, Kara Swisher, that they “hate to be at the inauguration, but I’m doing it for shareholders.”
He continued: “And this effectively emboldens the CEO of X to then demand that IPG advertise on her platform; otherwise, she will get her boss to block the merger. Which leads to one of the world’s wealthiest men, who owns one of the most important newspapers, to say, ‘We’re no longer going to talk about opinion.’ There is one kind of fascist domino following one after the other.”
Galloway appeared to be referring to a recent Wall Street Journal report that said Yaccarino and her associates had pushed Interpublic Group, a large advertising company, to advertise on X. The pressure comes as IPG seeks a deal to sell itself to its competitor Omnicom. The deal could need regulatory approval from the Trump administration, with which Musk works closely.
Musk and a spokesperson for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Galloway took a moment to single out Musk and his recent gesture at Trump’s inauguration, which some have interpreted as a fascist salute.
“I had a running loop of Musk doing the Nazi salute, and I thought, ‘I refuse to normalize this *********,'” he said. “Think about what money has done to us.”

WA election 2025: Roger Cook chokes back tears as he celebrates Labor’s win
Roger Cook has choked back tears while recalling his family’s reaction to an “emphatic” Labor win, and has thanked WA for trusting him as Premier.
“It was pride and love and I had the opportunity at home to give them a hug,” Mr Cook said on Sunday morning.
Mr Cook was greeted by a smattering of applause as he arrived at his local cafe in Wellard after Labor’s second biggest election victory.

Bateman has been declared for Labor this morning, with MP Kim Giddens’ re-election meaning the party has won at least 41 seats.
“I think this is an emphatic victory for WA labor,” Mr Cook said.
“It’s a vindication of the strong Government that we have provided for the people of Western Australia. It’s a vindication and a strong endorsement of our plan, our plan to keep the state the strongest economy in the country.”
More to come.

Investigators Believe They Know How Gene Hackman’s Dog Died
Investigators Believe They Know How Gene Hackman’s Dog Died
On Friday afternoon, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department put the rumor mill to rest when they finally shared their findings about how Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa died in their New Mexico home. But several questions still remain, including exactly what caused the death of the couple’s beloved dog Zinna.
Based on their investigation, authorities concluded that Arakawa died on February 11 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, an infectious disease that is typically carried by deer mice. Hackman is believed to have died a week later, on February 18, of heart disease, with Alzheimer’s noted as an additional contributing factor. Zinna’s death, however, is a bit harder to determine.
Related: Cause of Death for Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa Revealed
While authorities are still awaiting necropsy results on the pooch, a 12-year-old *********** Kelpie mix, New Mexico State Public Health Veterinarian Erin Phipps has suggested that dehydration and starvation are two likely causes of the dog’s death. “Given the timelines presented, it is a possibility,” she said at Friday’s press conference, according to CNN.
Though Phipps could not completely rule out Zinna being exposed to hantavirus, the infection that led to Arakawa’s untimely death, she deemed it extremely unlikely, as “Dogs do not get sick from hantavirus.”
“These viruses are zoonotic,” Phipps added, “meaning they are transmitted from animals to humans.”
Zinna was one of Hackman and Arakawa’s three dogs, and the only one who died with them. Her body was discovered in a closed kennel in the same bathroom where Arakawa was found, only 10 to 15 feet from her owner. The reason Zinna was crated versus free-roaming the home appears to be the result of a recent medical procedure.
Related: Gene Hackman Friend Announces Update On His Dogs
“We know from our investigation that on February 9, 2025, [Arakawa] picked up Zinna from Gruda Veterinary Hospital,” Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared on Friday. “There was a procedure that was done with the dog, which may explain why the dog was in a crate at the residence.”
Hackman and Arakawa’s two surviving pups, a ******* shepherd named Bear and a shepherd mix named Nikki, are currently being looked after by Joey Padilla, a friend of the couple who owns Santa Fe Tails, a local boarding facility. In a recent interview with ABC News, Padilla said the dogs “are safe and adjusting.” He also confirmed that he will continue to look after the dogs “until I get word on what Betsy’s wishes for these dogs are.”

VP Vance confronts Cincinnati protestors, condemns them on social media
Vice President JD Vance spoke with protestors Saturday in Cincinnati as they were rallying in opposition of the Trump administration’s stance on the Ukraine and Russia war, originally reported by our news partner WCPO in Cincinnati.
[DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks]
Vance posted on social media after the interaction condemning the protestors, claiming they followed him and his 3-year-old daughter, WCPO says. Instead of ignoring protestors, Vance spoke with them “in hopes that I could trade a few minutes of conversation for them leaving my toddler alone,” he wrote.
“It was a mostly respectful conversation, but if you’re chasing a 3-year-old as part of a political protest, you’re a s—t person,” Vance wrote on X.
TRENDING STORIES:
Dozens of people were gathered along William Howard Taft Road in Walnut Hills, many waving Ukrainian flags, WCPO says.
Ann Henry, the woman who took the video of Vance engaging with protestors, claims Vance’s post is a fabrication of the incident. She says the group passed Vance spontaneously as they were headed to the nearby protest, according to WCPO.
The video shows protestors ask Vance questions regarding the war in Ukraine and Russia, WCPO says.
“We think it’s in the best interest of our (own people) and frankly in the best interest of the Ukrainians for the war to stop,” Vance said.
Vance also confirmed that Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, something that contradicts President Trump’s comments saying Ukraine started the war, WCPO says.
Protestors said the US is selling the Ukrainians out, and Vance disagreed.
“With respect, ma’am, I disagree,” Vance said. “I think that what we’re doing is we’re actually forcing a diplomatic settlement.”
WCPO previously reached out to Vance’s team to learn why the vice president was in Cincinnati this weekend, but they did not hear back.

WA election 2025: Libby Mettam leaves door open to leadership change, says party must back successor to 2029
WA election 2025: Libby Mettam leaves door open to leadership change, says party must back successor to 2029
Libby Mettam has left the door open to leadership change in the Liberal Party, appearing resigned on Sunday to handing the reins over to a newcomer.
Speaking to media on Sunday after a third-straight electoral thumping, Ms Mettam said the leadership was up to the parliamentary party, but stressed whoever was chosen after the election needed to hold the role all the way to 2029.
“I will be talking to my colleagues. There is no doubt leadership speculation at the beginning of the campaign had a destabilising effect,” she said.
“Whoever the leader is going into the 2029 election, they need four years to work as a leader, to build momentum in the community, and to have the support of the Liberal Party going forward as well.
“It is important that the leader has the support of the Liberal Party team, and it is important that whoever the leader is going forward is the leader going into the 2029 election, and and it is important that my colleagues make that decision.”
Asked if she was resigned to handing over the leadership, Ms Mettam said: “This cannot be about me.”
“This is about ensuring that that leader, whoever it is, has clear air in the lead up to the 2029 election. That is what the Liberal Party needs. That’s what the people of Western Australia needs.”
It came as Basil Zempilas on Sunday ruled out “rash” decisions in the wake of the election result, saying questions of leadership change cannot be answered until the complete picture is clear.
Camera Icon‘Not a time for anything rash’: Basil Zempilas. Credit: Danella Bevis/The West ***********
Praising Ms Mettam’s work as “herculean”, Mr Zempilas said he expected to form part of the Liberals’ leadership team after his narrow election as the new Churchlands MP.
Mr Zempilas said talk of leadership change after a poor showing from the Liberals was too early.
“This is not a time for anything rash. This is not a time for haste,” he said in a radio interview.
“We should wait and see what this full picture of this result is, and then digest it fully then and and that includes Libby.
“Today’s not the day for any decisions about anybody’s future. We need to properly understand what this result is before those contemplations.”

Wild footage shows sketchy Qantas landing in effort to resume port-cyclone flights
Wild footage shows sketchy Qantas landing in effort to resume port-cyclone flights
The pilot of a Qantas plane is being commended for a hair-raising landing at Brisbane Airport as cyclonic winds rocked the small Qantas Link craft.
YouTuber Julia Flights captured the footage against gloomy skies on Saturday, about 12 hours after Tropical Cyclone Alfred had been downgraded to a tropical low and reached mainland Queensland.
“Happy to fly with that pilot any day,” one commenter said.
“That is a pilot who is confident in (their) ability. That was a hard approach executed very well,” said another.
Footage shows a Qantas plane struggling to land at Brisbane Airport as winds from Cyclone Alfred topped 100km/h.
The video shows the “Dash 8” turboprop Qantas Link flight drifting toward the runway as wind smacks Julia Flights’ microphone.
The plane pitches uncomfortably and the nose dips a few metres above the runway. As the plane touches down, the right wing rises far above the left, before all three wheels safely hit the bitumen.
The aircraft had no passengers on board, and was one of the first planes to be relocated to Brisbane for passenger flights to resume.
The plane had come from safekeeping in Tamworth.
Qantas and Jetstar flights in and out of Brisbane were cancelled effective mid-afternoon Thursday as the cyclone inched closer to Queensland.
Domestic and international flights resumed from 6am Sunday, about 24 hours after the (downgraded) tropical low hit mainland Queensland.

In a statement Sunday morning, Qantas said while all Brisbane flights were scheduled to go ahead on Sunday, strong winds meant some planes could not be moved from their places of safekeeping, so some evening flight schedules would change.
“We are expected to progressively rebuild our schedules throughout the day,” Qantas spokesperson said.
“With forecast winds easing, from this evening we expect to be able to safely return aircraft that were moved out of the expected path of the cyclone to Brisbane and the Gold Coast airports to support the restart on Sunday,” the spokesperson said.

“Teams across the business are working to get customers in and out of southeast Queensland and northern NSW as safely and as quickly as possible and continue to work closely with the state and federal government and the relevant local airport authorities.”
The same as Qantas, Virgin cancelled all flights to and from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Byron Bay on Friday and Saturday. Multiple Virgin flights from Brisbane – to Sydney and Melbourne – have been cancelled on Sunday. Joint Virgin and Link Airways flights to Bundaberg, Tamworth, Biloela and Dubbo have also been scrapped.
A host of morning Virgin flights into the Gold Coast were canned. Virgin Australia flights shared by the likes of Singapore Airlines, Etihad, Qatar and Hawaiian airlines via Sydney and Melbourne have also been cancelled.
Flights at the Sunshine Coast are pretty much back to normal. A Jetstar flight from Auckland is the only definite casualty on Sunday, as the morning flight was cancelled. A Jetstar flight from, and then to Melbourne on Sunday afternoon, has been delayed.
Three Sydney flights to Byron Bay on Sunday have been scrapped. Those planes were due to take passengers back out of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport too.

All HHS workers given $25,000 voluntary buyout offer, source says
All HHS workers given $25,000 voluntary buyout offer, source says
All employees in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services were notified Friday of the option to voluntarily resign in exchange for a $25,000 payment, a source familiar with the situation told CBS News.
The department-wide email offered a “voluntary separation incentive payment,” the source said. Employees have been given until a deadline of March 14 to reply.
Friday’s offer is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to slash the size of federal workforce and shrink the government’s budget through mass layoffs and financial cuts. That process has been primarily carried out through the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk.
Federal agencies announced more than 62,200 job cuts in February, a number which surged U.S. layoffs to their highest mark since July 2020.
And last week, a similar buyout of $15,000 to $25,000 was offered to employees in the Social Security Administration.
The far-reaching HHS has more than 80,000 employees and oversees several major health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Thousands of probationary workers across HHS were informed last month they would be fired. Probationary workers are generally those who have been on the job for less than a year.
It’s unclear how the layoffs and buyouts will impact some of the challenges facing HHS and its new chief, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., including addressing the bird flu outbreak which has contributed to a spike in the price of eggs, as well as a measles outbreak which has claimed at least two lives.
In January, immediately after President Trump took office, the over two million civilian federal workers were offered deferred resignations in which they would get paid through September without being required to show up for work. About 75,000 workers accepted that offer, which has been challenged in court.

Bali’s mysterious elephant cave | The West ***********
Bali’s mysterious elephant cave | The West ***********
In 1923, Dutch archaeologists made a stunning discovery at the base of a lush green river valley near Ubud in the southern riverlands of Bali: a limestone wall covered in intricate stone carvings of demons and mythological beings. The mouth of the largest carving, which some say resembles the Hindu elephant-headed god Ganesh, led into a cave crammed with ancient relics. Despite decades of study and research, no one has been unable to verify either the age or purpose of the carvings, other than to assume they were designed to ward off evil spirits. The earliest known mention of the site, known as Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave, is found in the Desawarnana, a Javanese poem from 1365, though it is believed to be around 1000 years old. The mystery of who built it and for what purpose was further complicated when fountains and a bathing pool were discovered in 1954, along with Buddhist images, stupas and relics, suggesting that it was originally a sanctuary of sorts. Tourists began visiting Goa Gajah in the late 1960s when it was added to the itinerary of day tours at the InterContinental Bali Beach Hotel, the first five-star internationally branded resort in Bali. The archaeological site proved so popular that the InterContinental’s F&B manager established a restaurant at the entrance to cater to guests’ needs. Today, a small but steady stream of tourists, mostly from India, visit Goa Gajah every day. From the car park, one must run the gauntlet between rows of souvenir shops, where enthusiastic shopkeepers flog drinks, snacks and wooden carvings. There’s a ticket office near the entrance, which charges foreigners $5, and a long flight of moss-covered stairs that leads down to the cave. There are two stone-edge bathing pools at the centre of the site and seven statues of women holding water pitchers that depict the seven holy rivers of India. Tourists are allowed to explore the edges but only worshippers are allowed into the baths, which are fed by natural springs and believed to possess healing properties. In front of the baths is an ancient platform covered with more than 100 “cairns”, piles of natural stones and broken chunks of stone temples. There is no signage to explain its significance; however, in Buddhism the act of stacking stones represents balance, and is thought to please spirits and gods. The main attraction, the rock wall with the carvings, lies perpendicular to this platform. The cave entrance is several metres wide and runs about 50m deep, and is pockmarked by nooks holding ancient Hindu relics of lingams and yonis: Hindu symbols of fertility. Beyond its archeological value, the grounds of Goa Gajah are a pleasure to explore, with hidden shrines and temples, manicured gardens, cascading waterfalls and tranquil meditation spots nestled in the bright green landscape. One can spend hours immersing oneself in the beauty of this ancient wonder, shrouded in mystery and myth.

+ Goa Gajah is at Bedulu Village, 6km from Ubud. It takes about two hours to get there by taxi from Kuta or Canggu. Visitors wearing shorts must buy or rent a sarong at a stall near the entrance to tie around the waist before going inside. The entrance fee is 50,000 IDR ($5) a person. There is no wheelchair access. Opening hours are 8am to 5pm.

Reform *** leader Nigel Farage defends suspending MP Rupert Lowe
Reform *** leader Nigel Farage defends suspending MP Rupert Lowe

Nigel Farage, left, with Rupert Lowe outside Westminster
Reform *** leader Nigel Farage has defended the decision to suspend one of his MPs, as he warned against “constant infighting” within political parties.
Writing in the Telegraph, Farage acknowledged the row had “dented” the “sense of unity” in Reform but said it would have been “inconceivable” not to take action.
They are his first public comments since MP Rupert Lowe was suspended from Reform and will now sit as an independent, while an inquiry is carried out.
Lowe is accused of workplace bullying, and also separately making threats of physical violence against the party’s chairman. He denies the claims.
Responding to Farage’s Telegraph piece, he said it was an “entirely false and poisonous narrative”.
Lowe – who is the MP for Great Yarmouth – has said there is “zero credible evidence” against him, and that he was suspended in response to him criticising Farage in an interview earlier this week.
Farage wrote: “If the last general election taught us anything, it is that the public does not like political parties that engage in constant infighting.”
He said Reform had built a unified party, but that “thanks to one of our MPs, Rupert Lowe, unloading a barrage of criticisms against our operations and its main actors, that sense of unity has been dented”.
Farage said Lowe had fallen out with his parliamentary colleagues “in one way or another” since his election eight months ago.
“We did our best to keep a lid on things but, in the end, containment strategies invariably fail,” said Farage.
Reform, the successor to Farage’s Brexit Party, has been riding high in recent polls but the row has exposed divisions within the party and means its five MPs are now down to four.
Lowe is accused of workplace bullying made by two female employees in his offices.
He has also been referred to police by Reform over allegations he made threats of physical violence at least twice to party chairman Zia Yusuf.
The party has appointed a lawyer to conduct an investigation into the allegations. Lowe previously said he had “cooperated and spoken at length” with the lawyer.
In his Telegraph piece, Farage said Reform had a “duty of care” to its staff, and it was “entirely right” to carry out an independent inquiry.
“It is inconceivable that we could simply ignore such allegations,” he added.
Responding to Farage’s piece, Lowe issued a new 250-word statement on X, saying he had “enormous respect” for him – but “you know that this is an entirely false and poisonous narrative”.
He said he only learnt of the proceedings against him after he gave an interview to the Daily Mail in which he criticised Farage.
Lowe said he had asked Farage to have dinner with him to resolve the situation, adding: “This should have ALL happened behind closed doors. As I pushed for, over and over again.”
On Friday, Tim Montgomerie, a former Conservative commentator who defected to Reform last December, said as soon as he arrived in Reform he had “picked up these tensions” between Farage and Lowe.
“I don’t know obviously these individual allegations but I think this was going to come to a head at some point anyway,” he told BBC Newsnight.
The splits emerged publicly when the Daily Mail published its interview with Lowe on Thursday, where he said Reform under Farage remained a “protest party led by the Messiah”.

WA Election 2025: Albany’s fate hangs in the balance as three-way contest emerges from early primary votes
WA Election 2025: Albany’s fate hangs in the balance as three-way contest emerges from early primary votes
Albany voters will have to wait to learn the fate of their seat in the lower house with the Labor, Nationals, and Liberals candidates neck and neck in primary votes, making for a three-way contest between the major parties.
Camera IconMs Stephens said the election was too close to call on the night but thanked her supporters. Credit: Laurie Benson
Flanked by her family, Labor incumbent Rebecca Stephens entered her count party at the Hilton Garden Inn Albany on Saturday night to a loud round of applause.
Though 82 per cent of the primary votes had been counted by the end of the night, the results were still too close to call with Ms Stephens securing a slight lead with 30 per cent of the votes and Nationals candidate Scott Leary and Liberal candidate Thomas Brough both sitting at 22 per cent.
With 82 per cent of the vote counted, the results put Ms Stephens 8 points ahead of her main rivals, but well behind her 2021 result of 51 per cent.
And with 26 per cent of the primary votes going to minor candidates, Albany will have to wait for preferences to be counted before it knows the result.
Speaking to supporters on the night, Ms Stephens said she was “looking forward” to the election results, saying her campaign had “done everything we can”.
“So far, it’s all too early to make predictions,” she said.
“We ran a fantastic campaign, couldn’t have put more effort in.
“We’ve had the support of the community and we’ve been out door-knocking and had conversations.”

At times “gruelling”, Ms Stephens said the campaign had been enjoyable for the resulting conversations with the community.
“Having conversations on the doors with people is really the only way you can understand what are some of the main issues,” she said.
“Probably one of the most humbling things has been people that I’ve helped over the last four years as a city member that have reached out and said, ‘you’ve done x or y and have really helped shape an outcome for them’.
“And that’s what I really take pride in, making sure that we help people in our community.”
While insiders had feared the Federal ban on live sheep exports could cruel Labor’s chances, Ms Stephens said it was health that voters cared about most.
“That’s why the Cook Labor government backed in $60 million for the Albany Health Campus, and it kept coming up time and time again,” she said.
“I think health, cost of living, and education, and . . . what we’ve committed for Albany and Mt Barker reflects what we heard out while campaigning.”
Meanwhile, at home with family and supporters, Mr Leary reflected on his campaign, which had seen him emerge as a potential dark horse for the Nationals after losing out on the Liberal preselection to Dr Brough.

“It’s been enjoyable, even from the last campaign, you meet a lot of wonderful people, engaged people that are on the same trajectory,” he said.
“So it’s a matter of harnessing them and knowing that we’ve got an end game.”
Mr Leary said that the live export issue “kept coming up time and time again” but “fundamental basics” like housing were the focus of his campaign.
The well-respected businessman has capitalised on the frustrations felt towards the incumbent government while offering an alternative for moderate conservatives as the Liberals face their own challenges, with Dr Brough making headlines for controversial comments about the LGBTQIA+ community, abortion and gun control.
“We put in a lot of hard work, and we know that there’s a lot of grassroots support,” Mr Leary said.
“Some long term voters in both camps that were sort of looking for an alternative and were happy to supply their difference.”
Over at Keep the Sheep Stadium, Dr Brough was surrounded by family and supporters, including independents Mario Lionetti and Louise Kingston and *********** Christians candidate Gerrit Ballast.
“I always laugh that everyone who’s on the sort of the right side of politics, sort of conservative side of politics, has been able to get along,” Dr Brough said.
“Doesn’t matter whether you’re independent, whether you’re ex-Nats, whether you’re Libs, the Nats were coming here as well, we got the *********** Christians, it’s just awesome.”
Dr Brough said he was sorry not to see a result on the night, but pleased with the early primary votes.
“We’ll just have to sit tight and trust in divine providence, but I’m pretty sure that we’ve done the primary objective, which is to kick Labor out of here,” he said.
“So let’s just sit and wait, and I’ll save all the thanks for later when we know whether we won or lost the seat of Albany.”

Ms Kingston, who ran as an independent in the upper house, was effusive in her praise of Dr Brough, describing him as an “amazing human being”.
“He’s just speaking to the people down here that need to hear,” she said.
“There’s a big majority that have been sleeping for a long time.
“They’re starting to wake up.”

Mr Lionetti, who had scored 7 per cent of the primary votes on Saturday night, said his own campaign had been “good”.
“Being an independent, it’s probably been easier because you can speak your mind without having someone controlling you, if that makes any sense,” he said.
The business owner and Albany city councillor said he had focused on what people had told him they wanted.
“If it doesn’t work well, we’ll come back in four years to try again,” he said.

Man charged with manslaughter after Louisiana student hazing death
Man charged with manslaughter after Louisiana student hazing death
A man has been charged in connection with the death of a Louisiana college student who collapsed after being repeatedly punched in the chest during a hazing ritual, police said.
Officials said Caleb McCray, 23, a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, allegedly punched Caleb Wilson multiple times during the off-campus initiation ceremony. He was charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter.
Mr Wilson was a 20-year-old college band member and mechanical engineering student at Southern University and A&M, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The suspect’s lawyer said in a statement his client deserved due process and asked the public “to withhold rushing to judgment until all the evidence is heard”.
Hazing, which is ******** in most US states, is a tradition where people pledge their loyalty by doing something painful, humiliating or dangerous.
Speaking at a news conference, Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr stated that Mr Wilson’s death on 27 February was a “direct result” of the hazing incident.
According to police, a group of individuals dropped Mr Wilson off at a hospital and allegedly lied to the staff, saying he had collapsed while playing basketball. They left before authorities arrived.
But detectives later determined that information to be inaccurate.
A police arrest report reviewed by US media outlets states that Mr Wilson and eight others pledging the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity were struck by Mr McCray and at least two others wearing boxing gloves.
Mr McCray allegedly hit Mr Wilson four times in the chest, after which he collapsed, suffered a seizure, and lost control of his bodily functions, the arrest warrant affidavit said.
No-one present attempted to call for emergency assistance, police said. Mr Wilson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
An autopsy found no significant trauma to his body, aside from a small bruise on the right side of his chest, according to the affidavit.
It also noted that investigators found no indication that Mr McCray intended to “cause death or great bodily harm to any of the pledges”.
Mr McCray, a member of Omega Psi Phi and reportedly a Louisiana Army National Guard member, is said to have graduated from Southern University in December 2024, according to ABC News.
East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said two additional people, who have not been publicly identified, will be charged with misdemeanour hazing.
The investigation is ongoing and remains active.
Southern University System President Dennis Shields expressed deep sorrow over Mr Wilson’s death.
“Words cannot express how deeply saddened we are by the loss of our student, Caleb Wilson,” he said.
Mr Shields said the campus chapter of Omega Psi Phi has been ordered to suspend all activities. Students involved in the incident could face expulsion.
Additionally, all Greek organisations at the university – a historically ****** college – have been barred from accepting new members for the remainder of the academic year.
Mr Wilson’s passing has sparked widespread grief.
The Human Jukebox Marching Band, which recently performed at the Super Bowl, honoured him in a Facebook post.
“A talented trumpet player, a dedicated student, and a bright soul, Caleb was a mechanical engineering major who poured his passion into both his studies and his time with the Human Jukebox. His energy, spirit, and impact on those around him will never be forgotten.”
Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil outside Southern University’s Smith-Brown Student Union.
One friend, speaking of Mr Wilson, told local media outlet WAFB: “His light does not die with himself. It dies with all of us. We have to make sure his light lives within all of us and make sure you stand up tall like he’s on your shoulders reaching for the sky.”
The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity released a statement offering condolences and supporting law enforcement’s efforts “to seek the truth”.
Under Louisiana state law, if a person dies or is seriously injured during a hazing ritual, it can be prosecuted as a criminal offence under the Max Gruver Act.
Max Gruver was a Louisiana State University student who died of alcohol poisoning after hazing in 2018.
Those prosecuted can face up to a $10,000 (£7,745) fine and five years in prison. Organisations and educational institutions can also face penalties under the act.
