  2. Cole Palmer: Ill forward ‘wanted to be on pitch’ as his barren run continues Cole Palmer: Ill forward ‘wanted to be on pitch’ as his barren run continues Chelsea’s Cole Palmer might have found a new way to fire a blank as he missed a Premier League penalty for the first time in the 1-0 win at home to Leicester City – but the fact he played at all was perhaps equally noteworthy on Sunday. Going into the match, Palmer’s involvement was in doubt after he missed training with a fever but insisted on playing to “help the team”. And the England international was perfectly placed to end his goal drought – standing at eight games going into the match – in the 22nd minute but his well-struck effort was saved by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen. Previously, Palmer had scored all 12 of his penalty kicks in the Premier League, beating the record for perfect attempts held previously by former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure. It was the latest episode in a dip in form since the end of 2024. Last year, he scored 26 times and delivered 13 assists in the Premier League, more than any other player in England’s top-flight during that *******. He also broke the Chelsea club record for goal involvements in a calendar year. But having also squandered several big chances in the 4-0 win against Southampton last week, the signs are that his confidence is on the wane. Palmer has varied his finishes from the penalty spot, but stats show that shooting with his left foot across to his right is his favoured option. This is likely something that Hermansen will have known and he managed to get across the goal to save the shot despite it being close to the corner. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer told BBC Radio 5 Five Live: “Cole Palmer’s penalty wasn’t one from someone with a lot of confidence. He went for power over real placement and the goalkeeper does so, so well. It wasn’t his best penalty. “It’s just not happening for Cole Palmer at the moment. The longer it goes on, there is more frustration and there will be more the element of trying to be selfish and making the wrong decisions.” There was a two minute and 24 second wait to take the penalty that can’t have helped – as Chelsea and Leicester players argued on the edge of the box – and referee Tim Robinson asked him to re-spot the ball. Ultimately the penalty miss did not matter for Chelsea as Marc Cucurella popped up with the long-range winner in the 60th minute as they hung on to the win despite a nervy end. It was also arguably Palmer’s worst performance of the season as he was substituted in the 75th minute, the fourth-earliest he has come off in a match since joining the club. However, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said there was a reason the forward was perhaps not at his very best. “It’s very easy: Cole didn’t train yesterday and during the night he didn’t feel well,” Maresca said. “The reason why he didn’t train yesterday is fever and diarrhoea in the last 48 hours. This morning, he woke up and he asked me, ‘I want to be on the pitch because I want to help this team, this club to play Champions League’. “This shows how these players want to bring the club where it belongs to.” Source link #Cole #Palmer #Ill #wanted #pitch #barren #run #continues Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  3. Harry Brook faces IPL ban over Delhi deal withdrawal Harry Brook faces IPL ban over Delhi deal withdrawal Harry Brook has pulled out of his IPL deal with Delhi Capitals for the second season running, a move which could result in a two-year ban from the competition. England batting star Brook apologised “unreservedly” to the franchise and its supporters but stressed that playing for England remains his “priority and focus”. The 26-year-old is one of the front-runners, along with Test captain Ben Stokes, to replace Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain following their group-stage elimination at the Champions Trophy. Brook wrote on social media: “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. “I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level. “With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. “In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest ******* in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. “I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.” England face a home series against India this summer, followed by a hotly anticipated Ashes tour against Australia in the winter. Brook withdrew from the 2024 IPL following the death of his grandmother and faces a two-year ban under regulations put in place ahead of the 2025 auction. In a note to franchises last September, the IPL said: “Any player who registers for auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons.” The only exception is for “an injury/medical condition”. 4. Mass layoffs at Veterans’ Affairs will begin early as June, memo says Mass layoffs at Veterans’ Affairs will begin early as June, memo says The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin mass layoffs at the politically sensitive agency as early as June, according to a memo reviewed by Reuters. The memo, which is dated March 6, directs the department’s human resources team to begin reviewing the agency’s operations with an eye toward firing civil servants. It said it expects the review to be done by June, after which “VA will initiate Department-wide RIF actions,” using an acronym for “reduction in force.” In a response to a request for comment, the VA sent Reuters a link to VA Secretary Doug Collins’ recent opinion piece in The Hill in which he defended the cuts as “thorough and thoughtful.” Veterans groups, Democrats, and some Republicans have already voiced concern over the planned reductions at the department, which is seeking to cut more than 80,000 workers from the agency. The scale of the layoffs at the VA is greater than proposed cuts at other agencies and will hit a department that looks after a group that typically garners wide bipartisan support in the U.S., its military veterans. Patty Murray of Washington, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said last week that the job cuts marked an escalation of a “full-scale, no-holds-barred assault on veterans” by President Donald Trump that would put veterans’ health benefits in “grave danger.” Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who said he learned of the cuts from the media, called it “political malpractice” not to consult Congress about the measures. The cuts are part of Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk’s efforts to dramatically slash the size of the federal government. 6. Iran open to US talks on nuclear militarisation concern Iran open to US talks on nuclear militarisation concern Iran would consider negotiations with the United States if the aim of the talks was to address concerns regarding any potential militarisation of its nuclear program, Iran’s United Nations mission says on X. The comment came a day after the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran will not negotiate under foreign “bullying”. In the post on X the mission said: “If the objective of negotiations is to address concerns vis-à-vis any potential militarisation of Iran’s nuclear program, such discussions may be subject to consideration.” “However, should the aim be the dismantlement of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program … such negotiations will never take place,” the post added. Khamenei was quoted by state media as saying on Saturday: “They are bringing up new demands that certainly will not be accepted by Iran, like our defence capabilities, missile range and international influence.” US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network, broadcast on Friday that he wants to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran and had sent a letter to its leadership suggesting talks with the Islamic Republic, which the international community fears is rapidly nearing the capability to make atomic weapons. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons. While expressing openness to a deal with Iran, Trump has reinstated a “maximum pressure” campaign that was applied during his first term as president to isolate the country from the global economy and drive its oil exports to zero. During his 2017-2021 term, Trump withdrew the US from a deal between Iran and major powers that had placed strict limits on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. After Trump pulled out in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions, Iran breached and far surpassed those limits. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi has said that time is running out for diplomacy to impose new restrictions on Iran’s activities, as Iran continues to accelerate its enrichment of uranium to near weapons-grade. Iran says its nuclear work is solely for peaceful purposes. 7. US open to minerals partnerships with Democratic Republic of Congo US open to minerals partnerships with Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) – The United States is open to exploring critical minerals partnerships with Congo, the State Department said in a statement to Reuters on Sunday, after a Congolese senator contacted U.S. officials to pitch a minerals-for-security deal. Democratic Republic of Congo, which is rich in cobalt, lithium and uranium among other minerals, has been fighting Rwanda-backed M23 rebels who have seized swathes of its territory this year. Talk of a deal with the U.S. – which is also in discussions with Ukraine over a minerals pact – has circulated in Kinshasa for weeks. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that are aligned with the Trump Administration’s America First Agenda,” a State Department spokesperson said, noting that Congo held “a significant share of the world’s critical minerals required for advanced technologies.” The U.S. has worked “to boost U.S. private sector investment in the DRC to develop mining resources in a responsible and transparent manner,” the spokesperson said. Kinshasa has not publicly detailed a proposal, instead saying it is seeking diversified partnerships. “There is a desire for us to diversify our partners,” Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said last week, adding there were “daily exchanges” between Congo and the U.S. “If today American investors are interested in coming to the DRC, obviously they will find space … DRC has reserves that are available and it would also be good if American capital could invest here,” he said. Andre Wameso, deputy chief of staff to Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, travelled to Washington earlier this month for talks on a partnership, two sources told Reuters. On February 21, a lobbyist representing the Congolese Senator Pierre Kanda Kalambayi sent letters to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other American officials inviting U.S. investment in Congo’s vast mineral resources in exchange for helping to reinforce “regional stability”. That initiative was not sanctioned by the broader Congolese government or presidency, according to two Congolese officials. There are, however, several initiatives underway, albeit in nascent stages, sources from Congo’s presidency, its ministry of mines, and from Washington told Reuters. A Congolese delegation had been scheduled to meet with the House Foreign Affairs Committee on March 6, but cancelled the meeting at short notice, according to two sources. 13. Romania election body says Georgescu can’t be candidate Romania election body says Georgescu can’t be candidate Romania’s central election authority has barred nationalist populist candidate Calin Georgescu from running in May’s presidential election re-run. The rejection of his candidacy, which was condemned by ultranationalist party leaders as undemocratic, can be challenged at the constitutional court. Georgescu surprisingly won the first round of the presidential election in Romania on November 24. Shortly before the run-off, the constitutional court cancelled the first round due to irregularities in campaign financing. The election will be repeated on May 4. Georgescu registered his candidacy with the electoral commission on Friday. He had submitted 324,000 declarations of support, more than the 200,000 required according to the law. According to media reports, the electoral commission justified its rejection, saying some submitted documents were incomplete. Dozens of supporters of Georgescu gathered outside the election bureau shouting “Freedom” and briefly tried to force their way through the security cordon. Romania’s highest court annulled the ballot two days before the second round of voting in December, citing allegations of Russian government interference in Georgescu’s favour, which the Kremlin has denied. Members of US President Donald Trump’s administration called Romania’s cancelled election an example of European governments suppressing freedom of speech and political opponents. Tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk called the election authority’s decision “crazy” on his social media platform X. Georgescu is under criminal investigation on six counts, including membership in a fascist organisation and communicating false information about campaign financing. He has denied all wrongdoing. Georgescu supports the Romanian Orthodox Church and has sparked controversy in the past for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders from the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes. According to local media, he has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a man who loves his country” but he claims not to be pro-Russian. The electoral commission on Sunday made its decision against Georgescu in a vote of 10 to 4, Romanian media reported. The constitutional court must decide on an any appeal from Georgescu by Wednesday. with DPA and AP Source link #Romania #election #body #Georgescu #candidate Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

It was a welcome return to batting form for Kennedy — the reigning O’Shaughnessy medallist whose previous four innings at domestic level had produced just 20 runs. But in an ominous warning ahead of the finals, the Irish international faced just 97 ****** while blasting five fours and eight sixes. Camera IconLake View’s David Forrest. Luke Boxhall grabbed 4-32 as Hannans lost 3-14 at one point, but it was more than enough runs to bank a sixth win that moved them into second place. In reply, Lake View openers Matt Carter (25) and David Forrest (23) put on 47. However, Boxall’s 16 from the No.4 spot was the next-highest score when the Viewers crashed to be all out for 103 in 22.4 overs. Luke Gilfillan made 15 off 13 ****** from No.9, but it was offset by Kennedy’s superb 5-12. Kennedy’s spell was backed-up by Shasa Molgaard Angel’s 3-19 as Hannans snapped a five-game losing sequence. 20. Penalty-saving hero Ronnow earns Union Berlin shock win Penalty-saving hero Ronnow earns Union Berlin shock win Eintracht Frankfurt have paid the penalty for missing a penalty in stoppage-time, going down in front of their home fans to a 2-1 Bundesliga defeat at the hands of struggling Union Berlin. Berlin goalie Frederik Ronnow was their hero with the last-gasp spot-kick save as Frankfurt missed the chance to retake third place, allowing in-form Mainz to retain their position in the top three. “It was a bad day, we are disappointed,” Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmoller said. “We have to shake that off and now focus fully on Thursday. A completely different game awaits us there,” he added, referring to the Europa League last-16 match against Ajax. Frankfurt had won the first leg 2-1. Frankfurt broke the deadlock in the 13th minute through January signing Michy Batshuayi. Can Uzun’s shot from the edge of the box took a deflection and fell for Batshuayi, who completed the well-worked team effort from close range to score his first goal for Frankfurt. The hosts could have added a second, but Fares Chaïbi’s header in the 26th was tipped over the crossbar by the inspired Ronnow. The missed chance was costly as Leopold Querfeld scored his first Bundesliga goal to level for Union in the 62nd and the visitors turned the game to their favour in the 78th. A long ball from Union wasn’t cleared by Tuta and fell to Jeong Wooyeong, who rushed to the box and curled a precise effort into the net. Benedict Hollerbach thought he had added a third for Union, but his goal in the 88th was ruled out due to a handball in the build-up. At the other end, Frankfurt were then awarded a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Hugo Ekitike had the spot-kick saved by Ronnow and Union took all three points to now sit 14th, six points away from the drop zone.. In the other game on Sunday, Hoffenheim took a 1-0 lead but conceded a 1-1 draw to bottom side Heidenheim. Haris Tabakovic broke the deadlock in the 34th with a looping header into the visitors’ net and he went close to a second shortly before the break. But it was Heidenheim who found the target next as Budu Zivzivadze produced a moment of magic and unleashed a stunning shot that arrowed into the top corner. Neither team left the pitch happy with the point. Heidenheim remain at the bottom of the table, while Hoffenheim are 13th and tied on 26 points with Union. 21. How Much Would Senator Lindsey Graham Get? How Much Would Senator Lindsey Graham Get? Burhan Ozbilici/AP/Shutterstock / Burhan Ozbilici/AP/Shutterstock Republicans and Democrats have sparred over solutions regarding Social Security and Medicare for years, as the bureaucratic red tape of federal law is thick. One such advocate for Social Security change is Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has previously offered a stance that seniors should “take a little less” and “pay a little more,” as well as that the age of eligibility may have to be increased to address solvency issues. Read Next: From 2% to Nearly Everyone: Musk’s X Post on Income Tax Raises Big Questions For You: 5 Types of Vehicles Retirees Should Stay Away From Buying As Graham is currently 69 and could collect Social Security benefits, if and how much he does could be seen as varying degrees of hypocrisy by some critics. You may be familiar with Graham’s thoughts about the program, but is it known whether or not he collects Social Security — and if so, how big his benefit payments are? Although senators are required to file financial disclosure paperwork on an annual basis, it only provides the financial information in broad ranges, making it tough to determine precise figures. Given his staunch opposition to the current state of Social Security, one could reasonably assume that Graham has yet to collect Social Security. That assumption would be correct, according to his disclosures. It has been reported that he and his sister relied on his parents’ Social Security benefits after they passed away in the late 1970s. A look at his financial disclosures for these years shows plenty of mutual fund and bank deposit assets, but no Social Security claims or other reportable earned and non-investment income. Trending Now: Mark Cuban Wants To Reshape Healthcare — 5 Ways His Approach Could Save Americans Money After serving as a U.S. Air Force defense attorney and prosecutor, then practicing law in South Carolina, Graham was elected to the House of Representatives in 1995. He served four terms before running for the Senate seat that had been occupied by Strom Thurmond in 2002 and has served as the senior U.S. senator from South Carolina since 2003. This gives him both political clout and high earning potential. It’s possible that Graham has simply chosen to not draw benefits yet, though he could’ve when he turned 62. Perhaps he is waiting until later this year when he turns 70 to maximize his monthly benefit, which would most likely amount to the maximum (which is $5,108 in 2025) due to his net worth. Graham may be a controversial political figure, but that doesn’t seem to affect his finances overall. Here are a few key takeaways about his wealth and how he builds it: Source link #Senator #Lindsey #Graham Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
