Romanian far-right presidential hopeful barred from poll rerun
Romanian far-right presidential hopeful barred from poll rerun
Romanian far-right populist Calin Georgescu has been barred from participating in May’s presidential election rerun by the country’s Central Electoral Bureau.
In December, Romania’s constitutional court annulled the first round of the vote – in which he came first – after intelligence revealed Russia had been involved in 800 TikTok accounts backing him.
The bureau rejected his candidacy for what it called “procedural issues”, without providing further details. Georgescu called the decision a “direct blow” to democracy.
He now has 24 hours from Sunday’s verdict to submit an official appeal, which should issue a ruling within 72 hours.

England 47-24 Italy: Hosts shine in the sun but Cardiff cauldron awaits
England 47-24 Italy: Hosts shine in the sun but Cardiff cauldron awaits
But England, as the old adage goes, earned the right to play before exercising it well in the second half.
Marcus Smith, who started the campaign as England’s attacking talisman but began this match on the bench, was key.
His defensive ability has been questioned, but his tackle on Matt Gallagher early in the second half as the Italy wing loomed out wide was impeccable in intent and execution.
Two minutes later he picked his moment in attack perfectly too, timing his run off Tom Curry’s shoulder to scamper in. A twin-moment, 10-point swing, that critical passage eased the pressure and allow England to loosen up their style.
When Sleightholme dotted down his second it was via a party game of a passing move, with England’s forwards improvising increasingly outlandish offloads.
By then the Italy defence had faded. It was still streets behind the out-worldly handling France showed off in Dublin the day before.
But it was a definite step up by England.
The pluses are multiple for head coach Steve Borthwick.
Fin Smith, sharp shooting off the tee, put in another cool-headed performance at fly-half, pulling strings and making plays.
Fraser Dingwall, forced into an unexpected centre combination by Lawrence’s injury, was smart enough to find a way.
Elliot Daly, the other half of that makeshift midfield, worked the angles superbly. The 32-year-old’s abilities, grey matter as much as fast twitch, will age slowly and well.
Ollie Chessum, Tom Curry and Earl ranged wide, far and effectively. Ben Curry and Chandler Cunningham-South added energy from the bench.
Jamie George felt the love as the crowd took to their feet to clap him on and off the pitch on his 100th appearance for England. He and his front-row colleagues had the best of the set-piece once more.
There will be tougher days and more stringent tests ahead.
Cardiff, on the final day, will probably be one of them.
Wales have stirred themselves under Matt Sherratt. The prospect of wrecking England’s title pretensions, while dodging the Wooden Spoon will brew up an almighty atmosphere under the Principality roof.
The sunlight and support won’t be nearly so plentiful next week. There won’t be much of either for England in that city-centre cauldron. It will be a very different feel.
England’s challenge is to deliver a similar result -and hope France might wobble and the trophy tips unexpectedly their way.

India milk ‘home’ advantage to win Champions Trophy
India milk ‘home’ advantage to win Champions Trophy
India have won the Champions Trophy title to confirm their status as the world’s premier white-ball side even though their latest achievement could well be branded with an asterisk.
Skipper Rohit Sharma led by example as reigning Twenty20 World Champions India prevailed in a nerve-wracking final against New Zealand to claim their second successive global title.
Their four-wicket victory was a perfect culmination of their unbeaten run in the 50-overs tournament featuring the world’s top eight teams.
India now have an incredible record of winning 22 of their last 23 completed matches in International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments.
Their lone defeat in the last three ICC events came in the final of the 50-overs World Cup against Australia in 2023.
Sunday’s triumph will alleviate some of that pain but questions abounded about the “unfair advantage” Rohit Sharma and his men got by playing all their matches in Dubai.
India stuck to their stand of not touring host nation Pakistan because of the political bickering between the neighbours, who play each other only in global events.
While other teams shuttled between three venues in Pakistan and flew to United Arab Emirates for any match against India, the eventual winners stayed put in Dubai where conditions also favoured their traditional strength of spin bowling.
India persisted with a four-pronged spin attack in the knockout matches and their spin quartet bowled 38 of the 50 overs against New Zealand.
Rohit paid tribute to his spinners and also thanked the legions of Indian fans at the heaving Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
“The crowd has been magnificent. It’s not our home ground but they’ve made it our home ground,” Rohit, who was player-of-the-match for his rapid 76, said.
New Zealand have been India’s bugbear in ICC events and beating them twice in the tournament will be particularly pleasing for the eventual winners.
The ****** Caps produced a lion-hearted bowling effort defending a modest 7-251 and skipper Mitchell Santner will take heart from their gallant display in their first ICC event under the spinner’s leadership.
They won a Tri-Nations series in Pakistan in their build-up and lost only to India in their spirited Champions Trophy campaign.
A shoulder injury to Matt Henry robbed them of the service of their pace spearhead but New Zealand fought tooth and nail against India.
Allrounder Rachin Ravindra,25, was adjudged player of the tournament for being the tournament’s leading scorer while also sharing the spin workload and claiming three wickets.
“We’ve seen how he steps up in these major events and that’s all you can ask for,” Santner said of the curly-haired allrounder who struck two hundreds that followed three centuries in the 2023 ODI World Cup..
“He understands his game at such a young age already.
“He’s got such a massive future ahead. He even took the ball in hand and put the pressure back on them today.”

Authorities traced this Myrtle Beach wildfire to a South Carolina woman’s backyard. She is now facing charges
Authorities traced this Myrtle Beach wildfire to a South Carolina woman’s backyard. She is now facing charges
A South Carolina woman faces charges after igniting yard debris that burned out of control and allegedly sparked a wildfire that has scorched more than 2,000 acres near Myrtle Beach, the state’s forestry officials said.
Alexandra Bialousow, 40, of Myrtle Beach, was arrested Thursday on charges of negligently allowing fire to spread beyond her land or property and starting a fire in woodlands, grasslands or other areas without taking necessary precautions, the South Carolina Forestry Commission said in a statement Friday.
“According to the arrest warrant, the suspect ‘did not have an appropriate water source readily available,’ nor did she ‘have any garden tools on hand to control the fire’” and prevent it from escaping her yard, thus contributing to its spread to land owned by a homeowners association, the commission said.
Bialousow was released from jail on Friday, according to Horry County booking records. If convicted, she could face up to 30 days in jail or be fined up to $200 on each offense, according to state law. Bialousow did not immediately reply to CNN’s attempt to reach her.
Several witnesses reported seeing Bialousow intentionally start a fire on March 1 in a backyard fire pit near a tree line in the Covington Lakes subdivision, the commission said.
Horry County issued a burn ban in unincorporated areas on February 27. By March 1, the entire state was under a burn ban as fire officials worked to respond to more than 100 wildfires that ignited that day, spurred on by strong winds and dry conditions. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency the next day to support wildfire efforts across the state.

The fire that became known as the Covington Drive Fire has continued to burn near Myrtle Beach. It is one of the largest among more than 175 wildfires that have now erupted across South Carolina, officials said.
As of Saturday afternoon, the Covington Drive Fire was 55% contained, the Horry County Government said, citing the forestry commission. No major injuries have been reported in connection with the blaze.
Most areas in Horry County are currently under a moderate or severe drought, according to the US drought monitor.
The burn ban in Horry County will continue until further notice, the South Carolina Forestry Commission said in a news release Saturday.
CNN has reached out to Myrtle Beach and Horry County authorities for comment.

Bruno Fernandes: How important is midfielder to Manchester United as Ruben Amorim asks for ‘more’ like him
Bruno Fernandes: How important is midfielder to Manchester United as Ruben Amorim asks for ‘more’ like him
Fernandes is now United’s top Premier League goalscorer this season with seven. His 12 in all competitions also puts him at the head of United’s scoring charts.
But it doesn’t end there.
In a United side that is 14th in the table, Fernandes has 14 goal involvements in the league. Unsurprisingly, that is more than anyone else.
But only Amad has more than Marcus Rashford’s five, which underlines how important the 30-year-old has been in keeping United away from getting in real trouble at the bottom of the table.
Since he made his United debut in February 2020, only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (177) and Tottenham’s Son Heung-min (124) have been involved in more goals than Fernandes (109).
It is clear Amorim needs Fernandes in the short and medium term as he looks to improve results, while at the same time making United a more attractive team to watch.
The home side had 31.8% possession against Arsenal, continuing a theme that has continued since Jose Mourinho’s time at the club where their best results are achieved when they play on the counter-attack.
On a day when United fans protested in huge numbers against the club’s ownership, Amorim is desperate to change that.
“When you coach Manchester United, you cannot play too much like that,” he told Sky Sports. “You have to try to win the game.
“This club will never die. That is clear. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it us harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.
“We want to give them a lot of effort. In the future, we will not play like that.”

Trump’s orders targeting law firms raise constitutional concerns, experts say
Trump’s orders targeting law firms raise constitutional concerns, experts say
By Mike Scarcella
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s executive orders terminating security clearances and taking other actions against two prominent law firms may violate constitutional protections and represent exceptional acts of retribution against lawyers who have crossed him in the past, according to legal experts.
The two firms targeted by the Republican president have represented Trump adversaries. Perkins Coie represented the campaign of 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who Trump defeated in his first presidential run. Covington & Burling currently represents Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed during Democratic former President Joe Biden’s administration who brought criminal charges against Trump in two cases.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Legal experts interviewed by Reuters said the manner in which Trump targeted the firms could run afoul of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment protections against government abridgment of speech and Fifth Amendment guarantee of due process – a requirement for the government to use a fair legal process.
Trump on Thursday directed Attorney General Pam Bondi, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and all U.S. agency chiefs to restrict access by lawyers at Perkins Coie, a firm founded in Seattle, to federal buildings and end their security clearances.
In his separate executive orders concerning the firms, Trump ordered reviews intended to end contracts they currently hold with various federal agencies. Trump also initiated a review intended to end the government contracts of Perkins Coie clients.
Trump’s February 25 executive order targeting Washington, D.C.-based Covington revoked security clearances for two lawyers who advised Smith rather than the clearances for all the firm’s attorneys.
Security clearances give individuals access to classified information. The U.S. government has broad authority to grant and rescind such clearances and to control federal contracts for reasons of economic policy, according to legal experts.
To comply with the Constitution’s due process mandate, the order against Perkins Coie would have needed to give the firm notice and opportunity to challenge the claims, according to University of Toledo College of Law professor Evan Zoldan.
Trump’s order accused Perkins Coie of “dishonest and dangerous activity.” It said Perkins Coie “racially discriminates” in its hiring – referring to the firm’s efforts toward hiring a diverse workforce in terms of race and other traits. Trump and his allies have portrayed such policies as discriminatory against white people. The order also criticized the firm’s work representing Clinton’s campaign.
In addition, the order called on government officials to investigate more “large, influential or industry leading law firms” over their compliance with laws against racial discrimination, another reference to diversity policies.
Perkins Coie in a statement said Trump’s order is “patently unlawful, and we intend to challenge it.”
“For more than 100 years, Covington has represented clients facing government investigations, consistent with the best traditions of the legal profession,” Covington said in a February 25 statement.
“We recently agreed to represent Jack Smith when it became apparent that he would become a subject of a government investigation,” Covington added.
Smith oversaw two federal cases against Trump – one involving his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and the other involving sensitive government documents he kept after leaving office in 2021. Trump pleaded not guilty in both. Neither went to trial.
Trump has called Smith “deranged” and has accused him of taking part in a politically motivated “witch hunt.” Trump faced criminal charges in two other cases as well. In the only one of the four criminal cases to go to trial, Trump was convicted in New York state court last year of 34 felony charges involving hush money paid to a porn star. Trump has vowed to hold “accountable” the officials responsible for the criminal cases.
‘HARD TO SEE’
University of Colorado Law School professor Maryam Jamshidi said challenging the termination of security clearances is legally difficult, but that it is “hard to see what constitutional authority would authorize” restricting Perkins Coie’s government contracting work.
Zoldan said Trump’s allegations against Perkins Coie could damage the firm in a way that the Supreme Court has ruled requires “some official proceeding to allow the person impugned to challenge these accusations.”
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said on Friday that Trump “is fulfilling his commitment to end the weaponization of government and protect the nation from partisan actors who exploit their influence.”
Federal databases show that Perkins Coie and Covington have held contracts with various federal agencies and currently represent companies that contract with federal agencies.
Perkins Coie’s federal contracting clients have included Microsoft, Northrop Grumman and Boeing, according to its website, and it advertises that it has security clearances that allow it to represent companies with sensitive government business.
Microsoft declined to comment. The other companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
‘PIECE OF THEIR LIVELIHOOD’
University of Pennsylvania law school professor Claire Finkelstein said the reliance of lawyers on security clearances to access information and serve clients can be considered a part of their practice of law.
“By removing these security clearances, they have removed a piece of their livelihood, and they’ve done that without due process of law,” Finkelstein said.
Stanford Law School professor Mark Lemley said Trump’s targeting of Covington and Perkins Coie based on clients they represented raises concerns under the First Amendment’s free speech protections, calling it a potential example of “blatant viewpoint discrimination.”
Legal scholars said that any legal challenge against the orders could be messy and protracted, especially given their unusual nature. They said they could not cite other examples of a U.S. president taking official action against a law firm over its representation of a client.
Trump “swore up and down that he’d seek ‘retribution’ against his political opponents,” said UCLA School of Law professor Jon Michaels, adding that the president’s actions show disregard for the rule of law.
Covington and Perkins Coie are among nearly a dozen major U.S. law firms representing clients in lawsuits against the Trump administration, challenging policies related to immigration, federal spending cuts and other issues.
Government records show that some other firms involved in the lawsuits also have been federal contractors, such as Arnold & Porter, Cleary Gottlieb and WilmerHale. Arnold & Porter declined to comment and the other two firms did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Groups advocating for the interest of lawyers said this week that Trump’s actions could deter law firms from taking clients whose interests conflict with his.
American Bar Association President William Bay said in a statement that clients have a right to access lawyers without government interference.
“The government has decided to punish two prominent law firms because they represent parties that the administration does not like,” Bay said.
(This story has been refiled to add the full name of the law firm in paragraph 2)

Daizen Maeda: Celtic’s ‘physical beast’ makes mark yet again
It was perhaps with that in mind that Rodgers has often opted to play Maeda through the middle in 2025 in preference to Adam Idah.
And the Irish striker, who came on himself to score the late second against Hibs, was unsparing in his praise of his team-mate.
“I don’t know how many games that is in a row that he’s scored,” he told Premier Sports.
“It’s not just his goals, his performance on the pitch is amazing. He’s the first name on the teamsheet, I don’t know where we’d be without him.”
After his kick out late on against Young Boys earned him a red card in Celtic’s penultimate Champions League group match, Maeda apologised to fans.
“I’m really sorry for causing trouble to the team in such a wonderful atmosphere,” he posted on X.
There were plenty of responses which were along the lines of: ‘Do whatever you like, pal,’ which suggests how plenty feel about him and his performances.
Likewise, rare glimpses of him away from playing endear him to supporters and are making him a much-loved figure.
Whether it was having his young children as mascots, or recent cameo appearances in interviews alongside team-mates.
Even ditching his previous routine of shaving his head before matches to grow his hair – apparently to appease his daughter who said she did not like him being bald – has added to the hero status.
Maeda is now front and centre at Celtic and again proved the difference on Sunday.

Looks good but I’m definitely not sold.
EA’s reputation as an extremely greedy company does not fade away that easily.
It would not surprise me that the release will somewhat look like this but then they implement all kinds of clownesque ‘skins’ for weapons and characters again.
Greed under the guise of ‘player freedom’ and ‘be who you want to be’
Maybe I’m too pessimistic but after what EA has pulled with long standing franchises I have become very sceptic about anything of this company.
We’ll wait and see I guess.

Winter storm strands drivers for hours in freezing conditions on Interstate 40
Winter storm strands drivers for hours in freezing conditions on Interstate 40
The Brief
Interstate 40 was closed for nearly 16 hours due to a winter storm in the high country.
Mario Martinez was one of many drivers stuck for hours.
He was just 10 minutes away from home.
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Friday’s winter storm forced ADOT to close Interstate 40 in both directions.
Drivers were left stranded for hours in the high country, some overnight.
Because of how quickly this storm came through, multiple major highways turned messy, leaving many drivers in awful situations, some stuck for more than 16 hours.
“I was close. I was ten minutes away from Williams, which is where I live. But never made it,” said Mario Martinez, one of those many unlucky drivers.
What we know
Friday’s snowstorm, shutdown miles of Interstate 40.
The road was completely iced over, leaving 18-wheelers sliding across the highway and drivers like Mario Martinez trapped in their cars.
“It took me 16 hours,” Martinez said.
With over two feet of snow, Martinez says the road turned into a parking lot around 2:00 p.m.
“I’ve never seen anything like that on the highway ever before,” he said.
Twelve hours later, nothing changed.
“Then, it’s 12 p.m. and then it’s 1 a.m. and then, you know, you start to fall asleep a little bit in your car, but you try not to because you don’t want to fall asleep on the highway,” he said.
Why you should care
Many didn’t have food or water.
“I had a trucker in front of me,” Martinez said. “He offered me food at one point.”
Some families were almost out of gas.
“One lady had kids in her car and she was about to run out of gas, you know, and she wanted to keep her car running so it can stay warm and the kids could stay warm,” Martinez said. “It just never stopped. It never really stopped snowing.”

Russian spy ring plans to kill journalist were ‘beyond imagination’
Russian spy ring plans to kill journalist were ‘beyond imagination’
Reuters
A journalist targeted by a Russian spy ring said it had a list of “assassination methods” to kill him that was “beyond any imagination”.
Christo Grozev told the BBC one planned method was to bludgeon him to death, and another involved using a “suicide bomber”.
The Bulgarian, who has published several exposés on Russia with colleague Roman Dobrokhotov, said several incidents showed the pair were tracked across Europe and had agents “breathing down our necks”.
He was speaking after three Bulgarian nationals were found guilty last week of spying for Russia one of the largest foreign intelligence operations in the ***.
Mr Grovez said that since the court case, Austrian police had reassured him and his children that this not could not happen again, adding that initially his family had been “shocked”.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House programme, he said the “list of imagined assassination methods” on his life “reads like a film noir”.
He said one of the ways the spies “fantasised about killing me” was hiring an Islamic State group “suicide bomber and having him explode himself next to me in the street”.
Mr Grovez said there was also a plan to kidnap him and “send me to a torture camp in Syria” while another man with a “latex mask” resembling him would fly to Russia on a commercial flight to be “arrested in front of cameras for full deniability”.
“Another way was bludgeoning me to death using a sledgehammer”, he said before adding that the fantasy and imagination of the spies was “beyond any imagination”.
Watch: Orlin Roussev was arrested by police at a guesthouse in Great Yarmouth.
Mr Grovez and Mr Dobrokhotov’s work includes exposing Russia’s role in the nerve agent attacks on then-Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in 2020 and Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in 2018.
Jan Marsalek, who instructed the spy ring on behalf of the Russian intelligence services, wrote in a message in December 2020 that Mr Grozev was the “lead investigator in the Navalny case”.
A message sent by Marsalek to Orlin Roussev – who ran the ***-based group from a former guest house in Norfolk – said: “Personally I find Grozev not to be a very valuable target but apparently Putin seriously hates him.”
After 2020, the spy cell followed the two journalists throughout Europe, spying on them on planes, in hotels and private properties.
On Friday, three spies were found guilty of spying for Russia in one of the largest” foreign intelligence operations in the ***.
In court, it came to light that operatives from the spy ring entered Grozev’s flat in Vienna in 2022 “when my son was playing a computer game in his room”, the journalist said.
He added: “I just don’t want to think about what would’ve happened if my son decided to go out of his room during their burglary.”
On Friday, Vanya Gaberova, 30, Katrin Ivanova, 33, and Tihomir Ivanchev, 39, were found guilty of conspiracy to spy. While the trio had day jobs as a beautician, a healthcare worker, and a decorator, the cell they were part of plotted to kidnap and kill targets, as well as planned to ensnare them in so-called honeytraps.
The methods they used were the sort of thing you would “expect to see in a spy novel”, said the Metropolitan Police’s Cdr Dominic Murphy.

A trans sex worker called 911 to report being kidnapped. LAPD officers shot and killed her
A trans sex worker called 911 to report being kidnapped. LAPD officers shot and killed her
A trans woman was shot by police at a Pacoima motel last month after she called 911 for help, then approached officers with a knife, according to video footage released Sunday by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Linda Becerra Moran, 30, died Feb. 27 after weeks on life support, leaving her friends and community advocates shaken.
Becerra Moran had told an emergency operator she was being kidnapped in the 10000 block of San Fernando Road on the morning of Feb. 7.
Footage of the encounter showed officers speaking in Spanish with a distraught Becerra Moran in the moments leading up to the shooting, keeping their guns drawn as she paced inside a motel room and they stood in the doorway. They opened fire after she moved slowly toward them, the video showed.
Becerra Moran had reported being held against her will in the motel room as a possible victim of sex trafficking, said Soma Snakeoil, executive director of the Sidewalk Project, a Skid Row nonprofit.
Becerra Moran was hospitalized in grave condition after the shooting, Snakeoil said, and the decision to end life support was approved by the ethics committee of the hospital where she was being treated after attempts to reach family members in her native Ecuador were unsuccessful. The L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office said information about the case remained limited because “legal next of kin have not been notified.” The LAPD did not acknowledge the death for more than a week.
Becerra Moran left behind almost no online presence, and mystery surrounds how she ended up at the San Fernando Valley motel where police shot her.
Read more: Case of trans woman found dead in Hollywood leaves family seeking answers
“This has such chilling connotations for survivors in L.A. — if they’re afraid to call 911, if they’re afraid that police are going to shoot them when they call 911,” said Snakeoil.
The LAPD identified the officer responsible for the shooting as Jacob Sanchez, a four-year department veteran currently assigned to Foothill Division.
Authorities have so far released few additional details about the deadly encounter, including whether they detained Becerra Moran’s alleged captor when they arrived.
In her conversation with a 911 dispatcher, a distraught-sounding Becerra Moran is heard saying that a man in a different room was holding her against her will, and bringing other men into the room.
“I swear to you, I have no reason to lie to you. Lord Jesus Christ,” she is heard sobbing in the phone.
“Are they forcing you to do this?” the dispatcher asks.
“Yes,” Becerra Moran responds.
A dispatcher then put out an alert to Foothill police units about a possible kidnapping and a person who posed a “danger to herself,” police said.
The video released by police shows a group of officers entering the room and asking Becerra Moran to sit on the bed as she shows them a wound she has on the back of the head from getting hit “many times” with a bottle.
Later, the officer who was examining her head for injuries suggests to his colleagues that the officers should place her on a mental health “hold.”

When a supervisor arrives, she becomes upset and demands that they stay away from her, sobbing and yelling at the officers to leave.
“No, if you guys were offering to help, I don’t want your help,” she yells at them. “What’s she saying?” the supervisor asks. She then begins pushing a mini-fridge in their direction, before grabbing a knife and holding it to her neck, prompting officers to draw their weapons.
When she moved in their direction, Sanchez opened fire, and she fell onto the bed.
As with all LAPD shootings, the incident will also be reviewed by the Police Commission, its inspector general and the district attorney’s office.
Snakeoil, whose organization offers services for unhoused people, said she first encountered Becerra Moran at MacArthur Park in late 2023, when police were warning about a serial killer who appeared to be targeting homeless people.
At the time, Becerra Moran was “fleeing from ******* violence,” Snakeoil said, and the organization worked to get her temporarily housed in local motels. But she never stayed in one place for too long, drifting between Westlake and Hollywood.
Across Los Angeles County, Snakeoil said, shelter beds for female survivors of human trafficking are scarce, especially for those who are trans or who struggle with mental health.
Kim Soriano, a researcher with the Sidewalk Project, remembers Becerra Moran for her independent-mindedness.
“She was just determined to survive. She was very resilient; like she knew what she wanted and she knew what she liked and what made her comfortable,” Soriano said, who would run into her while researching her dissertation on police treatment of trans and ****** people at MacArthur Park.
A devout Catholic, Becerra Moran owned a five-pound statuette of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which took up most of the space in the battered suitcase that she lugged around.
“She told me that she carried it all around with her and it offered her protection,” said Soriano. Once, she recalled, Becerra Moran saying of the statuette: “Be careful with her, because she’s come a long way with me.”
Over the months, the two of them bonded, Soriano said, talking often about Becerra Moran navigating life as a trans woman of color who supported herself as a sex worker while living on the streets. For her, threats were everywhere. Gangs. Drugs. Police.
Soriano said Becerra Moran was among the park regulars who expressed a grudging acceptance of law enforcement. Like the others, she’d gotten swept up by the seemingly endless cleanups targeting drug use and theft in the area — tents were dismantled, belongings seized and people forced to leave. And yet she ultimately felt police were there for protection, Soriano said.
“She called them when she needed help because she was being held hostage and trafficked and they met her with even more violence,” Soriano said. “Maybe she did believe that they would be some type of lifeline for her.”
Becerra Moran had been awarded a housing voucher, but “no one had placed her anywhere” given the city’s shortage of short-term shelter and housing options, Soriano said. Eventually, with Soriano’s help, she secured a bed at an area shelter.
She didn’t stay long. She was frustrated over having some of her possessions thrown away by shelter staff, shortly after moving in, Soriano said. She also recalled Becerra Moran feeling unsafe after being placed in a dorm-style room with three other occupants.
When Becerra Moran ended up back on the streets and lost her phone, Soriano fell out of touch.
Soriano said she continued doing her outreach at MacArthur Park, hoping to run into Becerra Moran again. She never did.
Leigh LaChapelle, an associate director at the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, said Becerra Moran’s case was a reminder of why police are not the answer to helping trafficking survivors. In recent years, law enforcement authorities have announced stepped-up crackdowns to curb the business along well-known “tracks.”

“They see them through the lens of criminality rather than vulnerability and treat them as people who need support,” said LaChapelle. “I’m so worried about this getting written off as a mistake or as a sort of exception.”
Snakeoil, of the Sidewalk Project, said that she visited Becerra Moran several times in the hospital, offering up words of encouragement from her bedside — praying that Becerra Moran could hear them from under a tangle of tubes keeping her alive. During the visits, the room remained under guard by two LAPD officers, Snakeoil said.
At some point, she noticed that Becerra Moran’s cherished Virgin of Guadalupe figure was nowhere to be found. A Sidewalk Project worker rushed off to buy a replacement, which Snakeoil placed beside the hospital bed. It remained there as Snakeoil said their goodbyes.
“We’re angry,” Snakeoil said. “This is a vulnerable woman and a survivor of violence.”

Lawyer exploring Rupert Lowe Reform row contradicts MP’s statement
Lawyer exploring Rupert Lowe Reform row contradicts MP’s statement

Rupert Lowe has been accused of making threats of violence against Reform ***’s chairman – which he denies
A senior lawyer appointed by Reform *** to investigate allegations against suspended MP Rupert Lowe and his team has denied making comments he has attributed to her.
The Great Yarmouth MP was referred to the police by his party, which accused him of making threats of violence against its chairman.
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed they are assessing an allegation of “verbal threats.”
There have also been allegations of bullying in Lowe’s offices, which are being investigated by the lawyer who has been hired by the party.
Lowe strongly denies all the claims, saying “there is no credible evidence against me” and says he is the victim of “a political assassination because I dared to question Nigel Farage”.
Reform removed the whip from Lowe, meaning he now sits as an independent MP.
His suspension came after the Daily Mail published an interview with Lowe where he said Reform under Nigel Farage’s leadership remained a “protest party led by the Messiah”.
The lawyer, a KC or King’s Counsel, who has not been named by the party but whose credentials have been verified by the BBC, said: “I have seen a number of statements made by Mr Lowe MP which are attributed to me and which describe my reactions to the process conducted by the party into the allegations made against both Mr Lowe MP and his constituency manager.
“I find myself in the unfortunate and regrettable position of having to make this statement to correct the record.”
The lawyer added: “I have not expressed either ‘dismay’ or ‘shock’ at any time as to the process. Nor have I said ‘there is zero credible evidence against [Mr Lowe]’, let alone said this ‘repeatedly’.”
On Friday, Lowe took issue with a statement issued by Reform which set out that there would be an independent investigation into what had happened.
‘No credible evidence against me’
He wrote: “I have just spoken to the KC. She is dismayed that this statement has been made, and reiterated that no evidence against me has been sent to her.
“She stated that this has been issued before the investigation has even started.
“She is shocked at the process, shocked at the communication from the party, and shocked that no credible evidence has been given, despite her repeated requests.”
The BBC put the lawyer’s statement to Lowe, who issued his own statement in reply.
“Ever since this malicious attack on my reputation was launched, all I have asked for from both Reform and the KC is credible evidence against me. None has been provided. It still hasn’t,” he said.
“The KC has said she has been ‘chasing’ for that. I have received nothing. Because there is no credible evidence against me.”
He added: “I have spoken with the KC at length, on the phone and through message. I’ve got to know her over the last week, and she has been very helpful, and is a charming lady who is trying to do her job in the very difficult position that Reform has put her in.”
‘You have to stand up to bullies’
He accused the party of an “outright lie” in claiming he had not co-operated with the investigation, a claim Reform made in a statement on Friday evening.
“I have been in discussions with my legal team this afternoon, and this will be followed by legal action in due course,” Lowe told the BBC.
“I will not have my name dragged through the mud as part of a political assassination because I dared to question Nigel Farage. You have to stand up to bullies, and I am doing exactly that.”
He said the lawyer had told him on Friday night: “I advised that you should simply say that the party was precipitous to state that these allegations had been made without also saying that the party has commissioned an independent investigation and the investigation has not yet got underway to look at all the evidence and evaluate its veracity.”

I’m 34, make $5K a month and spend 64% of my income on rent. I also have $0 savings. Am I making a big mistake?
I’m 34, make $5K a month and spend 64% of my income on rent. I also have $0 savings. Am I making a big mistake?
I’m 34, make $5K a month and spend 64% of my income on rent — $3,200 for a 1-bedroom in Philadelphia. I have $0 savings. Am I making a big mistake or is this just the reality of US housing?
Rent prices have been rising across the United States, and it’s causing big problems.
Rental data from StreetEasy and Zillow shows that since 2019, rents have risen faster than wages in 44 of the country’s 50 largest metro areas. Rents have gone up an average of 1.5 times faster than wages since 2019 and have increased three times as fast as wages in some areas.
This has very real financial consequences for people who are trying to live and work in these locations. Say, for example, you live in Philadelphia, make $5,000 a month and you’re paying $3,200 a month for a one-bedroom apartment. That’s 64% of your income, leaving you less than 40% to cover all of your other expenses.
With such little income remaining, you haven’t had an opportunity to build your savings, and now you’re wondering if you are making a big mistake or just stuck in a bad situation due to the state of the U.S. housing market.
Yes, you’re definitely stuck in a bad situation and many Americans are in the same boat. But you can make it better if you’re willing to make a few sacrifices.
When it comes to the cost of living, experts typically recommend that you spend no more than 30% of your income on housing. Those who spend more than 30% on their home are considered “cost burdened.”
Unfortunately, U.S. Census data shows that far too many Americans fall into this category. According to a 2024 report, over 21 million renter households in America spend more than the recommended percentage of their income on housing. That’s around half of all the households that rent properties throughout the country.
Those living in Philadelphia are very likely to feel the pinch, as the City of Brotherly Love came in at number nine on Redfin’s list of the 10 least affordable metros for renters. As of December, 2024, the median rent in the area was $1,865, which means you’d need an annual income of $74,600 to afford the median rent in Philly.
Since you’re earning $5,000 per month, you’re earning less than what you’d need to comfortably afford the median rent in Philadelphia. And since you’re paying $3,200 per month on rent, you’re actually paying nearly twice the amount that a typical renter pays in Philly.
Story Continues
Spending 64% of your income on rent is not sustainable, so you’re going to need to make a change if you want to save money and build financial security for your retirement.

Unfortunately, you are far from alone when it comes to struggling with rent prices. Data from Redfin shows that nationwide, renters must earn $63,680 to afford the median rent for an apartment in the U.S. ($1,592).
That’s down 6.4% from August, 2022, when the median asking rent in America reached an all-time high of $1,700 due to the pandemic. At that time, a renter would have to earn $68,000 annually to afford the median asking rent in the U.S., which is just about $5,000 more than today.
And while the country’s median asking rent has gone down in recent years, rent prices are still 33.4% higher than they were before the COVID-19 lockdown. This, as you can imagine, is a problem for many renters in America. In 2024, the estimated median income for a renter was $54,752, which is 14% less than the $63,680 that renters must earn to comfortably afford the median rent in the U.S.
You may love your apartment in Philadelphia, but spending 64% of your income on rent is far from an ideal situation. Not only are you unable to save money for your future, but leaving less than 40% of your income for everyday expenses is likely to push you into debt.
Since you’re paying more than the median rent in Philly, looking for a cheaper place to live is an option that you should consider. Try using online search tools to find an apartment that gets you closer to that 30% mark that we mentioned above.
You could also try pointing out to your landlord that you are paying more than the median and see if there’s any wiggle room to negotiate, as they may not want to lose a reliable tenant.
But even if you do move or get a better deal on your apartment, you still don’t make the amount that Redfin says you’d need to be able to comfortably afford a typical apartment in Philly. With this in mind, you may want to look into finding a roommate or taking on a side gig for a few hours a week.
If those aren’t viable options, you’ll need to be pretty strict in other areas of your budget to afford rent and leave some income for savings. Cooking meals at home, taking advantage of public transportation and finding opportunities to enjoy free entertainment are all ways that you can keep spending down.
