US says Ukraine ‘ready to move forward’ on ceasefire demand
US says Ukraine ‘ready to move forward’ on ceasefire demand
The Trump administration believes Ukraine’s leadership is “ready to move forward” on the US demand for a ceasefire process with Russia, according to a senior US state department official.
The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz are due to arrive in Saudi Arabia for Tuesday’s talks with their Ukrainian counterparts.
President Donald Trump has stepped up pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to accept his demands for a quick ceasefire with Moscow – but without any immediate pledge of a US security guarantee.
Ten days ago the two publicly clashed at the White House, with Trump claiming Zelensky was not ready to end the fighting.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
“The fact that they’re coming here at senior levels is a good indication to us that they want to sit down and they’re ready to move forward,” said the state department official, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the talks with Ukraine in Jeddah.
While Zelensky is also due in the Gulf kingdom to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he is not expected to play any formal role in the talks with the Americans.
The Ukrainian team will be represented by Zelensky’s head of office Andriy Yermak, the country’s national security adviser as well as foreign and defence ministers.
In his video address late on Sunday, Zelensky said: “We hope for results – both in bringing peace closer and in continuing support”.
Zelensky has been under strong US pressure to make concessions ahead of any peace talks, while he has been pushing for firm security guarantees for Kyiv, stressing that Putin violated previous ceasefire deals.
Any corresponding pressure the US has been putting on Moscow to make concessions has not been made public.
Soon after the White House row, Zelensky expressed regret about the incident and tried to repair relations with the US – the country’s biggest military supplier.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, later said that Trump had received a letter from Zelensky that included an “apology” and “sense of gratitude”.
Witkoff said that in Saudi Arabia the US team wanted to discuss a “framework” for peace to try to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
A major minerals deal – derailed because of the row – is also reported to be back on the agenda in Saudi Arabia.
Ukraine has offered to grant the US access to its rare earth mineral reserves in exchange for US security guarantees.
The clash at the White House also resulted in the US pausing all military aid to Ukraine and stopping sharing intelligence.
But when asked on Sunday whether he would consider lifting the intelligence pause, Trump answered: “Well, we just about have. I mean, we really just about have and we want to do anything we can to get Ukraine to be serious about getting something done.” He provided no further details.
On 18 February – before the US-Ukraine row in Washington – Rubio held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia. It was a follow-up to Trump’s controversial phone conversation with Putin.

Slotkin says Trump has Democrats ‘on their heels’ since election
Slotkin says Trump has Democrats ‘on their heels’ since election
Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) argued that since the election, President Trump has had Democrats “on their heels.”
Slotkin joined NBC News’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, where she was asked by host Kristen Welker about if the Democratic Party has a leader to help navigate the Trump administration.
“Look, I mean, people know me, I’m pretty straightforward. I don’t think it’s a secret that Democrats have been on their heels since Trump won the election, right?” Slotkin said. “I don’t think that’s … something hidden.”
Slotkin, who recently delivered the rebuttal to President Trump’s joint address to Congress, highlighted how Trump has been successful at “flooding the zone” and coming out with new acts and orders each day since he’s been in office.
Like many other Democratic lawmakers and strategists, Slotkin called for a new group of leaders to step forward. The Michigan senator, however, has emerged as a bright spot for Democrats after she delivered a well-rounded speech after Trump’s chaotic speech.
“I think you can’t get better until you admit you have a problem. I think some of the new voices in the party have been agitating about, right? New senators, new representatives, new folks who are like ‘hey, we need to do more, and we need to be showing that we’re actually having a plan to stand up on really important moments of inflection,’” Slotkin said.
“So that’s what I’m trying to do from within,” she added.

Venezuelan parents watch from home as their son is laid to rest in Texas after drowning
Venezuelan parents watch from home as their son is laid to rest in Texas after drowning
EAGLE PASS, Texas (AP) — The cries of Liliana Olivero watching from Venezuela through a cellphone pierced through the somber Christian music and gusts of wind as her son’s casket was lowered into the ground.
Gustavo Alfonso Garcia Olivares died at 24, drowning in the Rio Grande not far from where he was buried Thursday at the Maverick County Cemetery in Eagle Pass, a Texas border town of about 30,000 people. About 10 people attended the service, which was streamed live to his parents in Venezuela.
It was the first ******** service for a migrant by Border Vigil, a human rights organization on the U.S.-Mexico border, one of the world’s deadliest.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
“Today we’re trying to bring back some of that humanity not just by giving his name but also by having his photo and having his family in the service,” said Amerika Garcia Grewal with Border Vigil, which is supported by Frontera Federation.
It came a day after Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Eagle Pass, which became a flashpoint between the Biden administration and Texas’ Republican governor, Greg Abbott, over who polices the border and how. The Trump administration and Abbott are closely aligned on border policy.
Border Vigil started in 2023 amid an increase in border crossings that led to many migrant deaths. The International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project has tallied 6,438 dead and missing on the U.S.-Mexico border since 2014.
The U.S. Border Patrol’s published data goes through the 12-month ******* that ended Sept. 30, 2022, when 895 bodies were discovered by its own agents and other government agencies.
Garcia Olivares’ parents last saw their son alive in a video shared by a friend showing him crouched in a corner of a fast-moving train heading to Mexico’s northern border in 2023.
Victor Garcia recalled their last conversation: “Dad, I’m going to make it, Dad. Don’t worry because you won’t be in need anymore. I’ll buy Mom a house and I’ll help improve your business.”
He described his son as brave and ambitious, having learned to become a barber at 14. He encouraged his son to go to college, but he decided to seek a life in the United States. His mother never had a chance to say goodbye. Not until Thursday.
The ceremony “was very sentimental, sad, but at the same time we are able to breathe a sigh of relief,” the father said.
Garcia Olivares’ body was swept up in the river and identified through Operation ID, an academic organization that partners with state, federal and international agencies. Although his family preferred to have him buried back home, they could not afford the nearly $9,000 cost.
A church volunteer built the white pine paneled coffin. As the ceremony closed, a backhoe shoveled dirt into the grave and a placard was placed by a simple, white cross near two dozen similar crosses laying nearby in a corner lot of the cemetery near a maintenance shed.

This story has been updated to correct the name of the organization that supports Border Vigil. It is Frontera Federation, not Fronteras Fund.

Jorgensen revels as Suaalii hogs the Waratahs spotlight
Jorgensen revels as Suaalii hogs the Waratahs spotlight
Cherishing his time flying under the radar, Max Jorgensen can’t wait for Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s return after bursting back into the spotlight for the NSW Waratahs.
Jorgensen’s first-half try-scoring double in Saturday night’s 34-10 Super Rugby Pacific victory over the Western Force helped the Waratahs to a hat-trick of wins to open a season for the first time since 2009.
“Obviously going three from three at home is pretty amazing,” the electric outside back said.
“We haven’t done that in my time here. Makes this place seem like a fortress, which is unreal, so we’re growing every week.”
And Dan McKellar’s new-era outfit have achieved the rare hat-trick without Suaalii since round one.
Jorgensen readily admits he is looking forward to the cross-code superstar’s comeback from a toe injury after enjoying some rare time out of the limelight since Suaalii’s signing.
Thrust into the 2023 World Cup as a teenager under Eddie Jones, Jorgensen had been the Waratahs’ golden boy before Suaalii arrived at Daceyville this season.
“Joey’s been amazing for our group and I guess it’s got its upside. I never thought it got to me in that way, but obviously it helps not being in the spotlight,” Jorgensen said.
“Definitely when you go through some rough patches, it definitely helps when the spotlight’s not on you so much.”
Still just turned 21, Jorgensen believes he a vastly improved player since debuting for the Tahs in 2023.
“I definitely feel like I’ve come a long way in two years,” he said.
“I’ve learned so much along the way from obviously all the older boys, coaches.
“I look back at some of those games I played and I just look so inexperienced, and I feel so much more confident, just learning off those older players and coaches.”
Jorgensen’s swan-diving, match-winning try in a famous win over England at Twickenham was one of the images of the Wallabies’ spring tour of the *** and Ireland.
“I learned so much obviously over there playing the best of the best in the northern hemisphere,” he said.
“Footy doesn’t get too much ******* than that.”
Equally at home at fullback, wing or centre, Jorgensen insists he’s happy to play anywhere for the Waratahs, where coach McKellar has given the back three free licence to roam.
That was very much evident when Jorgensen drifted from the right wing to set up left winger Darby Lancaster for a lovely try against the Force.
“As long as I’m in the team and playing, I’m happy,” Jorgensen said.
“We look at it as a sort of three fullbacks, two wingers and the fullback is the way we play, so there’s a lot of moving, swinging around.
“The wing is always in the back field as well, so it’s not too different of a position and that’s how we play our games.
“It doesn’t really matter who’s where. It’s just as long as we’re working together.”
After wins over the Highlanders, Fijian Drua and the Force, the Waratahs face their biggest test yet in round five on Saturday against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

Samsung Said to Be Testing Android 16-Based One UI 8 on Flagship Galaxy S25 Series
Samsung Galaxy S25 series was launched in January and it arrived with One UI 7 based on Android 15 out-of-the-box. While the OS’ rollout for other phones in the company’s portfolio is yet to reach completion, Samsung is said to have already begun testing its next OS dubbed One UI 8 which is likely to be based on Android 16. As per a tipster, the internal test build of One UI 8 has been spotted on the company’s server.

Samsung has kicked off One UI 8 (Android 16) development two months earlier than usual.

The South Korean technology conglomerate is likely to have kicked off the development of its next-generation OS two months prior than its usual timeline. However, this isn’t an indication of the commencement of the firmware’s beta testing. By the time it rolls out to the public, which is speculated to happen later this year in line with previous trends, Samsung will also have almost completed the migration of its devices from Android 14-based One UI 6 to One UI 7.
One UI 8 is expected to be based on Android 16, which was recently confirmed by a company official to release in June 2025. It could be moved to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on June 3, following which developers will be able to create custom variants of the OS catering to their respective devices and port it for the release.
Notably, the company also recently announced the expansion of One UI 7 Beta to more devices and regions. It is now available for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in India, South Korea, the ***, and the US. Further, the beta programme will also be expanded to include Samsung Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Tab S10 series and Galaxy A55 later this month.
There is no word about the features included in Samsung’s One UI 8 update. More information is likely to be revealed in the months leading up to the Android 16-based OS’ release.

Why Are Analysts Bullish On This Cheap Software Stock?
Why Are Analysts Bullish On This Cheap Software Stock?
We recently compiled a list of the 10 Cheap Software Stocks to Buy According to Analysts. In this article, we are going to take a look at where GigaCloud Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:GCT) stands against the other cheap software stocks.
The software industry is changing at an unparalleled rate, with significant advances in programming languages, structures, frameworks, techniques, and other technologies. More specifically, the industry has benefited greatly from the growing need for digital transformation. Until recently, growth prospects have been attractive due to the rising use of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), which offers a flexible and cost-effective distribution mechanism for apps. It also reduces deployment time compared to traditional systems. In that regard, the global SaaS industry was valued at around $3 trillion in 2022, marking the end of a decade of strong development, with McKinsey estimating that it might reach $10 trillion by 2030. However, McKinsey contends that the rapid emergence of generative AI (GenAI) has altered the software industry more drastically than the shift to SaaS. A notable example is ChatGPT’s introduction in late November 2022, which sparked a surge in investment. By 2023, large software firms had already invested over $15 billion in GenAI solutions, accounting for roughly 2% of the global corporate software industry. In contrast, it took SaaS spending four years to get the same market share.
At the same time, IT executives are turning to technology consolidation to address global economic concerns such as inflation, recession, and supply chain disruptions. According to Canalys’ IT Opportunity report, global IT investment would increase by 8.3% to $5.44 trillion in 2025. This builds on the rapid growth in 2024, which is expected to climb 7.7%, the fastest pace since the post-COVID technological ***** of 2021. In that same vein, The Business Research Company predicts that the global software products market will rise from $1.8 trillion in 2024 to over $2.0 trillion in 2025, representing an 11.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
While challenges exist on the path to growth, the ******* concern for the software industry at the moment is DeepSeek, a ******** company that claims to produce artificial intelligence software at a fraction of the expense of large US software corporations. DeepSeek’s cheaper price should have forced US companies to reduce subscription costs and investments. However, this has had minimal effect on market sentiment towards American firms. In fact, AI income still accounts for a modest portion of their total revenues, and their supremacy remains largely intact. Furthermore, DeepSeek’s danger doesn’t seem to be immediate, as major US software companies have spent years improving and growing their corporate products.
Story Continues
For our list of cheap software stocks to buy according to analysts, we used stock screeners to select firms with an average analyst upside potential of at least 20% greater than their current stock price. According to Wall Street experts, these equities are undervalued compared to their actual potential. All of these stocks have PE ratios below 25, as of March 7.
Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 373.4% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 218 percentage points (see more details here).

Foster mum Jennifer Wilson, 154kg, squashes little Dakota Stevens, 41kg, to death by sitting on him
She was teaching him a lesson — but instead crushed a little boy to death under her 154kg frame.
Dakota Stevens had run away from home after an argument and his foster mum picked him up from a nearby neighbour’s house and brought him back.
But the 10-year-old then went onto the front lawn and threatened to run away again.
So Jennifer Wilson sat on him.
But her 154kg body was way too much for slender, 41kg Dakota to handle.
The little boy screamed while his foster mum sat on his midsection, close to his neck.

Court documents show that when the boy stopped screaming, Ms Wilson thought he was pretending.
“Are you faking?” she can be heard asking Dakota in a 20-second clip taken of a mobile phone of the incident in Indiana in the US.
When the 48-year-old gets no response, she turns him over and finds his eyelids are pale and that he has stopped breathing.
She frantically gets one of her other children to call emergency services while repeatedly shouting his name.
Police said that when they arrived, Dakota was motionless and without a pulse.
They said Wilson, who was also fostering three other children, was “visibly distraught”.

Dakota was flown to a nearby children’s hospital but could not be saved. He was taken off life support after two days.
Wilson pleaded guilty to reckless ********* in October, admitting that she sat on Dakota for five minutes.
She faces six years in prison.

Trump says intel pause on Ukraine has been ‘just about’ lifted; says tariffs will make America rich
Trump says intel pause on Ukraine has been ‘just about’ lifted; says tariffs will make America rich
President Donald Trump said the U.S. has “just about” lifted the intelligence pause on Ukraine, adding that his administration has to do anything it can to get Ukrainians serious about making a deal to end the war with Russia.
“You know, I say they don’t have the cards. Nobody really has the cards,” Trump told reporters during a gaggle on Air Force One on Sunday evening. “Russia doesn’t have the cards…What you have to do is you have to make a deal, and you have to stop the killing. It’s a senseless war, and we’re going to get it stopped.”
On Friday, Fox News Digital learned from three sources familiar with the situation that the U.S. was continuing to share some defensive intelligence with Ukraine to protect it against incoming Russian strikes.
Federal intelligence, the work of the CIA, FBI and human intelligence, and data that helps with offensive Ukrainian strikes against Russia had already been paused.
Trump Exempts Mexico From Tariffs For Usmca Goods Until April 2
President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in the Oval Office at the White House on February 28, 2025 in Washington, DC. Trump and Zelenskyy met to negotiate a preliminary agreement on sharing Ukraine’s mineral resources that Trump says will allow America to recoup aid provided to Kyiv while supporting Ukraine’s economy.
When asked during the gaggle if he would consider lifting the intel pause on Ukraine, Trump said the U.S. had.
Read On The Fox News App
“We, we just about have. I mean, we really just about have,” he said. “And we want to do anything we can to get Ukraine to be serious about getting something done.”
Trump also noted that he thinks Ukraine will sign the minerals deal, but he wants them to want peace at the moment.
Trump To Put Tariff Exemptions On Certain Goods From Canada, Mexico
When asked how Ukraine should show it wants peace, Trump said they have not shown it to the extent he thinks they should.
“I think right now they haven’t, but I think they will be, and I think it’s going to become evident over the next two or three days,” the president said, adding that we have to have peace over anything. “This week, hundreds of people died in cities in Ukraine, and we got to get it stopped. It would have never happened if I was president.”
During the nearly 10-minute gaggle with reporters, Trump fielded questions on a variety of topics, including the types of sanctions or tariffs he may impose on Russia.
Emmanuel Macron Calls ‘Emergency Meeting’ For European Leaders To Discuss Trump: Report
The president explained that he and his team had been looking at their options, but his focus was on a few big meetings coming up in Saudi Arabia, which will include Russia and Ukraine.
“We’ll see if we can get something done,” Trump said. “A lot of people died this week, as you know, in Ukraine – not only Ukrainians but Russians. So, I think everybody wants to see it get done. We’re going to make a lot of progress, I believe, this week.”
Trump was also asked what he would say to Americans watching their retirement accounts freefall from their highest in years amid concerns about tariffs.
National Security Advisor Says Putin, Zelenskyy Agree ‘Only President Trump Could Get Them To The Table’
The president told the reporter the tariffs “are going to be the greatest thing we’ve ever done as a country,” adding that they will “make our country rich again.”
The tariffs, Trump explained, will bring companies and factories back, noting that 90,000 factories in the U.S. had closed since the beginning of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which was in effect from 1994 to 2020.
At the end of his time with reporters, Trump was asked if he was worried about a recession, after hesitating on the same question when asked by FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo.
“Of course you hesitate. All I know is…we’re going to take in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, and we’re going to become so rich you’re not going to know where to spend all that money,” Trump said. “I’m telling you; you just watch. We’re going to have jobs. We’re going to have open factories. It’s going to be great.”

Floods prompt early Lions trip to Sydney for AFL opener
Floods prompt early Lions trip to Sydney for AFL opener
AFL premiers Brisbane have joined NRL team Gold Coast in changing their travel plans as ex-tropical cyclone Alfred continues to wreak havoc.
After their season opener at home on Thursday night against Geelong was postponed because of the weather, the Lions have returned to their waterlogged home base on Monday to work out what comes next.
They will head to Sydney early on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s grand final rematch against the Swans.
The NRL’s Titans will also relocate to Sydney on Tuesday for Sunday’s game against Canterbury.
Gold Coast’s Parkwood training base is out of action due to flooding.
The Dolphins, unable to train at a flooded Kayo Stadium, were investigating on Monday whether they do the same and move to Newcastle to prepare early for their Thursday night match against the Knights.
Brisbane have been able to train outdoors since last Wednesday, when they had an intraclub hitout at their Brighton Homes Arena headquarters. They trained indoors there on Monday.
Lions football boss Danny Daly said the past week had been unprecedented, but was upbeat about being ready for the Swans.
“These things happen unfortunately in life, and you just need to be resilient, be calm about it and work your way through it,” he said.
“So, I’ve got no doubt our preparation will be spot on leading into our game against Sydney.
“We will train somewhere tomorrow, whether it is the Gabba or Brighton Homes Arena, which are both pretty waterlogged at the minute as you can imagine.
“We will head to Sydney on Wednesday then get training in somewhere on Thursday on a dry ground as preparation for the game.”
Daly thanked the AFL and sent the Lions’ best wishes to everyone affected by Alfred.
“On behalf of the football club I hope everyone in Queensland and New South Wales are safe and well and we are all praying for you,” Daly said.
“To make sure everyone is safe and sound that’s the first priority for us, the human element of it. Then once that is taken care of, you look at the footy side of it and you find a way to just deal with it and get on with it.”
Titans boss Steve Mitchell said water was sitting well above the crossbar on the team’s training field and that the safety of players and staff was paramount.
He said the club’s dojo facility used for warm-ups, wrestles and indoor training had also been damaged by the wild conditions.
Meanwhile, Super Rugby team the Queensland Reds were due to land in Brisbane on Monday after a two-week road trip to Perth and Christchurch.
Their Ballymore base has so far avoided flooding and the team is expected to resume training on Wednesday ahead of their Super Rugby Pacific blockbuster at Suncorp Stadium against NSW Waratahs on Saturday.

Identity of skier killed in Summit County backcountry avalanche released
Identity of skier killed in Summit County backcountry avalanche released
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — The identity of a skier who was found dead on Saturday after being buried in an avalanche in Summit County has been released.
The deceased man is identified as Michael Janulaitis, 51, of Marion, Utah.
“We come to you with heavy hearts and great sadness this morning,” a post on X from the Utah Avalanche Center reads. “Michael was caught, carried, and killed in an avalanche while skiing a steep, northeast facing run in Hoyt Bowl.”

“Michael was a friend of Utah Avy and we feel privileged for the time we got to spend together,” the Utah Avalanche Center statement reads. “This is a tremendous loss for our backcountry family and we will miss him deeply.”
Background
At around 5 p.m. on March 7, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an overdue skier. The individual was skiing alone in the backcountry area near Hoyt Peak — northeast of Kamas City.
Search and rescue teams responded and conducted a coordinated search for the man, but due to “hazardous and ineffective searching conditions,” a press release from the sheriff’s office states, authorities made the decision to temporarily suspend the search late Friday night. Crews resumed the search at sunrise Saturday morning.
During the initial search, rescue crews identified an area where an avalanche had recently occurred.

“It was unclear at that time whether the overdue skier had been involved in the avalanche,” the release states. “Due to extremely hazardous conditions, additional resources were requested toassist with avalanche mitigation, allowing searchers to operate safely and effectively.”
Just before 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, rescue crews found the man — later identified as Janulaitis — deceased. It was determined that he was caught in the avalanche, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The Summit County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim,” the release states. “The SCSO extends its gratitude to Park City Mountain Snow Experts, Park City Mountain RECCO, the Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau, the Utah Avalanche Center, and the Wasatch Backcountry Rescue Team for their invaluable assistance in the search and recovery efforts.”

Louisiana death row inmate who is scheduled to die by nitrogen hypoxia challenges the method
Louisiana death row inmate who is scheduled to die by nitrogen hypoxia challenges the method
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A death row inmate in Louisiana who is scheduled to become the first person in the state to be executed using nitrogen gas has asked for his capital punishment to be carried out using a more “humane” method.
Attorneys for Jessie Hoffman Jr. argued against the capital punishment method of nitrogen hypoxia in a Baton Rouge federal court on Friday.
The hearing occurred a week after Hoffman filed a lawsuit seeking to block his March 18 execution date, when nitrogen will be pumped into a mask strapped onto Hoffman, who was convicted of the 1996 execution-style ******* of Mary Elliott in New Orleans.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Among their arguments, Hoffman’s attorneys said nitrogen hypoxia is cruel and unusual punishment under the U.S. Constitution and infringes on Hoffman’s freedom to practice his religion, specifically Buddhist breathing and meditation exercises. They also argued the method, which involves an industrial, full-face mask, will ignite and worsen his diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and claustrophobia, causing mental torture.
The execution protocol lacks transparency, they argued, noting that under the policy Hoffman’s attorneys do not fall under the list of “required witnesses” to the execution.
Death by firing squad and medical-aid in dying, taking an oral solution of drugs mixed with apple juice, are alternative execution methods that would be more “humane,” Hoffman’s attorneys said.
The only execution methods for carrying out capital punishment listed in Louisiana law are nitrogen hypoxia, lethal injection and electrocution. For nearly two decades, the state has faced legal battles and challenges procuring drugs for lethal injection.
Attorneys for the state say nitrogen hypoxia has proven to be successful in Alabama, noting the method is seemingly painless and an approved method under Louisiana law.
Additionally, Republican officials including Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill say the state is long overdue in delivering justice that has been promised to the families of victims.
The last execution in Louisiana was 15 years ago, when the state used lethal injection to put to death Gerald Bordelon.
After Louisiana’s Republican-dominated Legislature added nitrogen hypoxia to the list of methods to carry out capital punishment last year, officials saw a path to resume executions.
Murrill told The Associated Press last month that she expects at least four people will be executed this year. There are 56 inmates on Louisiana’s death row.
Louisiana is following in the footsteps of Alabama, which has executed four people with nitrogen gas. If Hoffman’s capital punishment is carried out as scheduled, Louisiana will become the second state to use the method.
Officials say Louisiana’s execution protocol is nearly identical to Alabama, where an inmate is strapped to a gurney and forced to breathe pure nitrogen gas through a mask placed on their face, depriving them of oxygen.
Each inmate put to death using nitrogen in Alabama has appeared to shake and gasp to varying degrees during their executions, according to media witnesses, including the AP.
The reactions are involuntary movements associated with oxygen deprivation, state officials have said.

Boxers Jarvis and Thurman trade vicious verbal blows
Boxers Jarvis and Thurman trade vicious verbal blows
Big-hitting *********** boxer Brock Jarvis has traded vicious verbal blows with Keith Thurman to set the stage for a spicy super-welterweight showdown in Sydney.
Taking offence to being branded a “Bondi ******”, Jarvis promised to knock Thurman’s lights out at the Horden Pavilion on Wednesday night.
Both combatants have lost just once in their professional careers, but the all-action Jarvis (22-1, 20KOs) is adamant that being a decade the American’s junior will take its toll on Thurman (30-1, 22KOs).
“Keith’s an old man now,” the Sydney slayer said at Monday’s official pre-fight press conference.
“He’s not the same as what he used to be. He thinks he’s the same, but he’s not.
“I was looking at him the other day – he doesn’t look ready to me at all. Looked like he was involved in a yoga class or something like that.
“He’s coming off some big injuries and he’s going to really struggle to get back in there, so I’m going to hit him and hurt him.”
But 36-year-old Thurman, a former unified world champion fighting for the first time in three years, reminded Jarvis he was a future “Hall of Famer” whose only professional defeat came against the great Manny Pacquiao.
“That little Bondi Beach fellow over there is just a little muscle-bound ****** boy,” the American said.
“He ain’t never seen nothing like this. I could be 46 years old, I still whoop his ****. I could be 56 years old, I still whoop his ****.
“They think I’m a mystical creature. They’re wondering why I’m still here, but when I bring that hot fire, you’re gonna know what it’s all about, man.”
Jarvis laughed off Thurman’s bravado.
“I’m the one that’s going to bring the heat,” he said. “I’m coming in for the knockout.
“They’ve totally underestimated me, so I’m coming in for the kill. I wanna punch a hole in your head.”
Thurman apologised for appearing to have underestimated his ambitious *********** rival.
“I’m trying to analyse the opponent that they have put in front of me,” the American said.
“It’s not my fault that he’s square, that he comes in, got no head movement and he just believes that he’s going to drop bombs on an old man and that I’m going to crumble.
“He moves like a cardboard box on wheels, man, a f****** Tetris board in action.
“I mean, I’m a two-time world champion, man. At the end of the day, I’ve seen this time and time and time again. I’m not trying to underestimate him.”
A victory for Jarvis would set up a potential domestic blockbuster with Nikita Tszyu.
Thurman has eyes for Tszyu’s superstar brother Tim after being forced to pull out of a scheduled show-stopper in Las Vegas last year because of a torn biceps muscle.
“I’ll just be waiting for the next contract,” Thurman said.
“If it happens to have Tszyu’s name on the other side, I am happy to sign it.
“I’ve already signed a contract against Tim Tszyu once. It was an unfortunate event that we didn’t get to make that manifest.
“Maybe this is the year.”
