Major Airline Cancels U.S. Flights Amid Low Demand
Major Airline Cancels U.S. Flights Amid Low Demand
U.S. travel is down in 2025, to the point where airlines are having to regroup and cancel flights that were once scheduled to take off this year. While multiple U.S. airlines have expressed their concerns about having to lower the number of domestic flights available for the upcoming summer season, it’s not just domestic airlines.
Over the past few months, both tourist and business travel from Canada to the U.S. have fallen. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, at the U.S. and Canada border decreased by 12.5% in February and 18% in March, per The Street.
Now, Air Canada is cutting down on San Francisco routes, and this follows earlier cuts to Washington and Miami. According to The Street, Air Canada “has already reduced its flight schedule to the U.S. amid lower demand,” with affected routes including “flights to Washington, Houston and Miami from Vancouver International Airport.”
“If we can de-risk this a little bit and move and be a bit proactive and move capacity into other sectors [where] we see strength, I think that’s the right move right now in this context,” Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s executive vice presidency, revenue and network planning and president of cargo, told investors in March, per The Street.
********* airline WestJet has also canceled the start of a new, non-stop flight between Austin and Vancouver, due to a “downward shift in demand” for travel going between the United States and Canada, according to Open Jaw. The YVR-AUS route was scheduled to start May 11 and, according to Texas television station KXAN reports.
A WestJet spokesperson told KXAN, “Due to a downward shift in demand for U.S. travel, WestJet has made the difficult decision to suspend scheduled direct service between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Austin, Texas.”
WestJet added that they will “review opportunities” to offer service on the Vancouver-Austin route in the future.

Scientists Found an 8,000-Year-Old Figurine in a Cave. Its Engravings Tell the Story of an Ancient Culture.
Scientists Found an 8,000-Year-Old Figurine in a Cave. Its Engravings Tell the Story of an Ancient Culture.
A two-inch Mesolithic stone figurine from Azerbaijan tells a tale of cultural growth.
It’s the first cultural find from the area of the South Caucasus.
The sandstone figurine depicts a human, and stone tools were used to create the artwork.
There’s no face on the oldest piece of art—a small sandstone figurine of a human from the Mesolithic era—ever found in one region of modern-day Azerbaijan.
In a study published by Archaeological Research in Asia, a team of archaeologists from both Japan and Azerbaijan showed how they used technology to investigate the details of the stone figurine that helps tell the story of the cultural shifts from Mesolithic to Neolithic.
“Its stylistic features considerably differ from those of Neolithic human figures in the region,” the study authors wrote, “providing a valuable reference point for understanding the cultural processes in symbolic aspects during the Mesolithic-Neolithic interface in the South Caucasus.”
The archaeologists discovered the figurine in the Damjili Cave, which was first explored by archaeologists in 1953. Layers within the cave show a high density of Neolithic settlements, and trace life back to Middle Paleolithic and Mesolithic times.
The figurine in question (dubbed Unit 5.2) was initially almost discarded when discovered amidst a layer of sediment along the bank of the Kura River—why would a ovular chunk of sandstone be anything other than a rock laying on the bed of a river? Fortunately, someone noticed the faint lines hewn into the rock that were clearly the work of an artist. The team needed microscopic analysis to really see the engraving patterns (the only modification made to the stone). “The overall pattern suggests that the artifact represents a human figure,” the authors wrote.
Carbon dating of the artifact places it between 6400 and 6100 B.C., but it required computed tomography analysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and scanning electron microscope analysis to really make the cultural value and stylistic differences from Neolithic examples clear.
One side of the figurine has more complicated engravings, likely indicating it’s the front of the figure. At two inches long, half an inch wide, and about a third of an inch thick, the craftsmanship was detailed and required stone tools for engraving. Vertical lines on the top of the stone likely represent hair. There’s also an explicitly delineated horizontal line across the hair that researchers believe was a hairband or edge of a cap, especially since the top of the head is not decorated. The figurine lacks facial features and there’s no way to discern the intended sex of the figurine.
The lower body is less intensely decorated, but does have three horizontal lines that are likely a belt and vertical lines representing a loincloth or apron. The team found reddish areas with a higher level of iron content, opening up the possibility red pigments were part of the original design.
“The engraving seems to have been performed carefully in most parts, representing the high sophistication of the craftsman, although different intensities of the work are also observable,” the team wrote. Various depths and widths were used in the engraving style, showing a deviation in strokes. “The most intense traces of engraving on the front side of the head suggest the manufacturer’s emphasis on the head, although the details of the face of the figurine were not depicted,” they wrote.
Alongside the figurine, the team found remnants of stone fireplaces, bone, and flaked stones, but ground-stone artifacts are rare. “The stone figure from Unit 5.2 is a rather exceptional find,” they wrote.
The style suggests a local tradition of artistic representation, although there could be cultural influence from Southwest Asia. “This specimen is unique in the prehistory of the South Caucasus,” the team wrote. “We hope that this research will provide a cautionary note when investigating small stone items from sites during the introduction of the agropastoral socio-economy in the South Caucasus. More discovery of Mesolithic portable arts should certainly contribute to our better understanding of the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the South Caucasus.”

Idaho ******: Seven people dead after truck and tour van collide on Highway 20 near Yellowstone, police say
Idaho ******: Seven people dead after truck and tour van collide on Highway 20 near Yellowstone, police say
A pickup truck and a tour van with foreigner visitors — including two people from Italy — collided on a highway leading to Yellowstone National Park, leaving seven people dead and eight others injured, Idaho State Police said.
The ****** happened just before 7:15 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 20 near Henry’s Lake State Park in eastern Idaho, police said in a news release. The state park is roughly 16 miles (26 kilometres) west of Yellowstone National Park.
Police have not said what exactly caused the wreck, but the Dodge Ram truck was travelling west while the Mercedes van was travelling east toward Yellowstone when it happened. Video from the scene showed clear weather conditions at the time.
Both vehicles caught fire, police said. The driver of the pickup and six people inside the Mercedes passenger van died. The truck driver was identified Friday as Isaih Moreno, 25, of Humble, Texas. Identifying the others will take some time, according to police.
Fremont County coroner, Brenda Dye, told The New York Times that she was waiting for DNA test results to identify the six others because the bodies were unrecognisable. She said all six were from outside the U.S. Two were from Italy and it wasn’t immediately known where the others were from, she said.

The van was carrying a tour group of 14 people, and the surviving occupants were taken to hospitals with injuries, police spokesperson Aaron Snell said.
Two were flown to an Idaho Falls hospital and one was flown to a Bozeman, Montana, hospital, according to police. Their conditions were not released. The others were taken to area hospitals with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.
The ****** remains under investigation.

Roger Merrill, 60, was driving home when he saw flames engulfing the two vehicles as bystanders tried to care for survivors from the van on the side of the highway. Merrill said he often sees tourist vans on the highway.
“It is a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance of Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “It’s extremely busy.”
Merrill captured video of the wreckage with smoke blanketing the van. Due to the remote location, Merrill said he anxiously awaited the help of first responders.
“It took an unnervingly long time for help to arrive just because of the location,” he said.
Police said Friday that a Fremont County sheriff’s deputy arrived shortly after the ****** and, with the help of bystanders, immediately helped injured van occupants as it caught fire.
The state is working with local officials to get “answers on what led to this terrible tragedy,” Idaho Gov. Brad Little said in a social media post.
The Idaho Transportation Department had identified the highway for safety improvements aimed at reducing the severity of crashes, but the project was still in the research and planning phase. An average of about 10,500 vehicles traveled that portion of the highway daily in 2023, according to the agency.

Nvidia and Anthropic have publicly locked horns over the impending enforcement of the U.S. government’s new AI Diffusion Rules. According to a CNBC report, an Nvidia spokesperson has described Anthropic’s assertions that the ******** sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to smuggle “large, heavy, and sensitive electronics” as “tall tales.”
More specifically, a spokesperson for Nvidia told CNBC that, “American firms should focus on innovation and rise to the challenge, rather than tell tall tales that large, heavy, and sensitive electronics are somehow smuggled in ‘baby bumps’ or ‘alongside live lobsters.’”
In other words, Nvidia challenged the notion that the ******** would smuggle those types of electronics, but we’ve seen plenty of examples of creative smuggling attempts, like smuggling CPUs in baby bumps or smuggling GPUs alongside live lobsters.
While Nvidia’s stance might have merit if we consider the scale of these bizarre smuggling operations (these attempts were with smaller processors or discrete graphics cards as opposed to large rack-scale server solutions used to train frontier models), ******** Customs has documented these exact types of smuggling occurrences. While these weren’t rack-level solutions, systems equipped with discrete graphics cards can be used to train smaller AI models or for research and development, and today’s high-end graphics cards are easily classified as large, heavy, and sensitive electronics. Check out the above links for more details on those particularly peculiar cases.
Furthermore, what we see is probably just the tip of the iceberg. And that’s to say nothing of suspect GPU sales in Singapore and Malaysia, with the former reportedly under investigation by the U.S. government.
This situation seems to have come to a head as the new AI Diffusion Rules, designed to prevent hostile nations like China from gaining advanced AI technologies from the West, are set to come into force starting on May 15. The Biden administration formulated these rules toward the end of his term (they were published in January).
In one corner, Nvidia is keen to continue supplying as many high-end GPUs to China as the country can absorb, and it is allowed to supply.
Meanwhile, Amazon-backed and U.S.-based AI firm Anthropic naturally wishes for a ready supply of AI accelerators stateside, with fewer competitors to push pricing up. It reportedly has plans for ******* and better data centers to propel its fortunes. Moreover, it pleads the case for keeping transformative AI technologies in the U.S. “in alignment with American values and interests.”

Reynolds set for Broncos bogey side, 2023 GF ‘a lesson’
Reynolds set for Broncos bogey side, 2023 GF ‘a lesson’
Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds is fit and will play against bogey team Penrith, still chastened by the lessons of the 2023 grand final.
The 34-year-old injured his shoulder in a man-of-the-match display in last week’s win over Canterbury but sailed through the captain’s run on Saturday without issue.
The Broncos have won just one of their past nine games against the four-time defending premiers, a 13-12 away victory in round one of 2023.
The most devastating of those defeats was the 26-24 loss in the grand final after Brisbane had led 24-8.
No single player was to blame. There was a series of collective errors but Reynolds failed to ice key moments.
“That is in the past,” Reynolds said.
“They are a great team and you’ve got to admire what they have done. You learn from certain things in your career and that was certainly a lesson for me and the rest of the team.
“We know next time we are in that position we will be a lot better for it. Hopefully we can get back there and face that same challenge.”
Broncos winger Jesse Arthars was one of Brisbane’s best in the 2023 decider and he said he was not haunted by it.
“No demons, no, no demons,” Arthars said.
“The demons are out there (on the training field) doing conditioning.”
Broncos coach Michael Maguire said the poor recent record against Nathan Cleary, Isaiah Yeo, Dylan Edwards and company was not an issue.
“That’s history, but for us, we would like to think we are a little different now,” Maguire said.
“What we have shown the last few months, when we are capable of playing the way we want to play, we can mix it with the best.”
Brisbane want to be more like Penrith were at their best, with most of their squad having eight or nine out of 10 games and training with the same high standard.
“Teams that are at the top of the ladder have great behaviours on and off the field of how they go about things,” Maguire said.
“They work really hard and the boys in my time have been doing that. But you have to do it consistently to build long term success.
“We all know that, so that’s something we are building at this club. Any team in any sport that is up the top of the ladder, they are working hard every day.”
Reynolds’ strong recovery has boosted the squad.
“There’s been a lot spoken about Reyno, but he has been fine,” Maguire said.
“He has trained every day this week so I’m looking forward to having Reyno out there and working off the back of his last game.”His shoulder just got jammed up. He is good to go.”

Streamer Duke Dennis Tracks Down His Stolen Dodge Challenger ****** Ghost
Online streamer Duke Dennis has millions of followers, but that fame comes at a price, like having his Final Call Dodge Challenger ****** Ghost stolen from his house. But the guy didn’t get famous by just playing victim, so Dennis tracked the limited edition muscle car down and had the thief arrested.
Mark Zuckerberg’s daily driver might shock you.
Trouble began for Dennis after he said some fans figured out exactly where he lives. That’s when people started camping outside his house and a couple of his vehicles were broken into. But thankfully the man had a plan in case someone swiped his pricey Mopar.
Dodge only made 300 of the Challenger ****** Ghost Last Call muscle cars, using the Hellcat Redeye Widebody as the base vehicle. Output is dialed up to 807-horsepower, but what really makes the Mopar hot are the unique aesthetics.
Each one was designed to look like the famed ****** Ghost, a 1970 Dodge Challenger RT SE which would race others on Woodward Avenue in Detroit back in the 70s. Supposedly, the mysterious muscle car never lost, often disappearing for months at a time, hence it being called a ghost by other street racers.
While the original ****** Ghost sold for over $1 million back at a Mecum auction in 2023, these limited edition tribute cars aren’t worth nearly as much. But they’re still pricey, with listings for those still at dealers sitting around $130,000 or so. MSRP for the Last Call model was announced at $100,000.
With the Mopar muscle car worth that much, one would think the owner would have some extra security. We know Dennis had a couple of trackers installed, which he used to see where the Dodge was after the unnamed thief swiped it.
Hopping on streaming, he declared that he was on his way to get the Challenger back and that police were called, later saying the thief was busted and his ride was recovered. Now the streamer is apparently considering moving so he isn’t targeted again.

Federal election 2025: Divided loyalties as Libs and Nats battle each other — and Labor — for WA’s newest seat
Federal election 2025: Divided loyalties as Libs and Nats battle each other — and Labor — for WA’s newest seat
A fierce fight for WA’s newest seat has exposed divided loyalties, with star Nationals recruit Mia Davies launching an election eve attack ad warning voters against the “big party duopoly”.
The former State Opposition Leader has stood alongside Liberal candidate Matt Moran several times on the campaign trail to make joint election commitments.
But she has spoken out against Coalition policy on critical minerals and has vowed to speak up within a joint party room in Canberra if elected.
Ms Davies denied the ad blitz launched on social media on Friday night — which urged voters not to “let the big party duopoly silence local voices” — was a deliberate attempt to undercut the Liberal campaign.
“We’re just pointing out that for the first time, many people in the electorate of Bullwinkel have the option of voting for change that they can trust,” she said.
“We’ve said that we have a strong alternative, a change that you can trust. We are part of forming government, providing stable government. That’s something that other minor parties can’t do.”
Feel like giving the politicians a rating this Federal election?
Our Pollie Rater lets you do just that.
Rate the politicians
Mr Moran, a former journalist and Afghanistan army veteran, denied the media attention on Ms Davies has stolen his thunder.
“I’ve just been focusing on my own campaign, I wish all the candidates well,” he said.
“I think we’ve run a good campaign, everyone has been, you know, honourable and we’ve all got along well on the campaign trail.”
Labor candidate Trish Cook has a slim lead in published opinion polls but a three-way contest has made Bullwinkel hard to predict.
Camera IconLabor candidate Trish Cook with Premier Roger Cook at Watle Grove Primary School on Saturday Credit: Jessica Page/The West ***********
After a Labor volunteer was photographed with both ALP and Greens how-to-vote cards in hand, Ms Cook denied she was in cahoots with the minor party.
“What we do is we recycle the how-to-vote cards,” she said, after voting at Wattle Grove Primary School on Saturday.
“We divvy them up and when you see the other person from the party we hand them over, so I don’t think there’s anything, I don’t think you can read anything into that.”
Ms Cook’s campaign was given an election day boost by another Cook, when the Premier made a brief stop at the polling booth in Wattle Grove, posing for selfies and indulging in a democracy sausage.
“Onion underneath, a squiggle of tomato sauce and a straight line of tomato,” Roger Cook said.
Ms Cook wasn’t willing to predict a result.
“I can’t say, it’s my first campaign, I’m not a career politician,” she said.
But she insisted she’s not counting on Greens preferences to get her across the line against two Coalition candidates.
“I’m just doing exactly what I can, I am a supporter for environment improvement and stronger environmental laws,” Ms Cook said.

Air India allowed to temporarily extend duty, rest for long-haul crew, memo shows
Air India allowed to temporarily extend duty, rest for long-haul crew, memo shows
By Abhijith Ganapavaram
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India’s aviation regulator has allowed Air India to temporarily extend the maximum duty hours and rest ******* for pilots on long-haul routes to allow the airline to tackle Pakistan’s airspace ban, according to an internal memo.
The exemption is for about two weeks beginning April 30 and is applicable for Airbus and Boeing long-haul jets, according to the memo, and is meant to cover flights to destinations in the U.S. The exemption been put in place while a permanent solution is being worked out, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The exemption increases the maximum flight duty ******* – typically the time between reporting for duty and the end of flight-related activities – for pilots and cabin crew, the memo showed.
Air India and India’s civil aviation ministry, which houses the regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), could not be immediately reached for comment.
Indian airlines are bracing for higher fuel costs and longer journey times after Pakistan shut its airspace to the country’s carriers as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours flared following an attack on tourists in Indian Kashmir last week.
Reuters reported on Thursday that Air India expects to face around $600 million in additional costs if the ban from Pakistan’s airspace lasts for a year, and has asked the federal government to compensate it for the hit.
The maximum pilot flight duty ******* for a flight of up to 12 hours is now 16 hours compared with the previous 14 hours, while for flights above 14 hours, the duty ******* has risen to 24 hours instead of 22 hours, according to the memo sent to pilots and seen by Reuters.
Extra rest periods of four hours and 12 hours over present limits have also been planned for crew at layovers and the home base, respectively.
The memo, which was earlier reported by the Economic Times newspaper, has stoked concerns among pilots about increased workloads at a time air travel in India is booming, with one Air India pilot telling Reuters the measures were “extreme.”
The DGCA is holding regular conversations with airlines to ensure pilots and cabin crew are not overburdened, the source familiar with the issue said. The pilot and the source declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

TSA Announces Warning After New Banned Item
TSA Announces Warning After New Banned Item
It can be difficult for passengers to keep track of what is and is not allowed in a checked bag and a carry-on bag when flying commercially. Now, after a recent announcement, passengers have another important item to pay attention to.
The TSA and the FAA recently announced a ban on lithium and lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage.
According to the U.S. Sun, the ban was officially implemented on March 1, 2025, after a power bank caused a fire on an international flight in South Korea.
The FAA and the TSA recently warned passengers that “all lithium-ion batteries are capable of overheating” and undergoing a process called thermal runaway.
“Thermal runaway can occur without warning as a result of various factors, including if the battery is damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, or improperly packed. Thermal runaway can also occur on its own due to manufacturing defects,” the FAA wrote in its announcement banning lithium batteries in checked luggage.
The ban covers spare lithium metal and spare rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for personal electronics such as cameras, cell phones, laptop computers, tablets, watches, calculators, etc. This also includes external battery chargers that contain a lithium-ion battery.
Passengers may still bring such items on the plane, but they must be in carry-on luggage – not in a checked bag.
“Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, including power banks and cell phone battery charging cases, must be carried in carry-on baggage only. When a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or at planeside, all spare lithium batteries and power banks must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin. The battery terminals must be protected from short circuit,” the FAA wrote.
As for why passengers may bring lithium batteries in a carry-on bag but not in a checked bag, the answer is simple: flight attendants are trained to recognize and respond to lithium battery fires in the cabin. However, if such a fire occurs in the cargo hold of the aircraft, flight attendants will be unable to put out the fire.

NPR stations targeted for cuts by Trump have provided lifelines to listeners during disasters
NPR stations targeted for cuts by Trump have provided lifelines to listeners during disasters
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — After Hurricane Helene devastated Asheville, North Carolina, the sound coming from open car windows as residents gathered on a street at the top of a ridge trying to get cell service last fall was Blue Ridge Public Radio. And as they stood in line for water or food, the latest news they’d heard on the station was a frequent topic of conversation.
“The public radio station was alerting people what was going on,” said Lisa Savage, who volunteered at an area church after the hurricane.
Now public radio stations are being targeted for cuts by President Donald Trump. This week, he signed an executive order aimed at slashing public subsidies to NPR and PBS, alleging “bias” in the broadcasters’ reporting.
Public radio stations have been a lifeline for residents during natural disasters that take out power, the internet and cell towers. And in many remote and rural areas across the U.S., they can be a lone source of local news.
About a week after she’d volunteered in the Asheville area, Savage recalled driving through another hard-hit community and hearing updates on Blue Ridge Public Radio on where residents could pick up water.
“So that was crucial,” Savage said.
In the West Texas desert, Marfa Public Radio provides listeners with a mix of local and national news and music. It’s based in Marfa, a city of about 2,000 that draws tourists to its art scene.
“Marfa Public Radio is the only radio service in a lot of the geographic area that we cover,” said Tom Livingston, the station’s interim executive director. “So it’s really essential in terms of if there’s news events, if there’s safety things that happen in the community.”
Funding has widespread impact
Trump’s order instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies “to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS” and further requires that that they work to root out indirect sources of public financing for the news organizations. The broadcasters get roughly half a billion dollars in public money through the private CPB, which has said that it is not a federal executive agency subject to Trump’s orders.
The heads of PBS, NPR and CPB all suggested Friday that the order was ********, and a court fight seems inevitable.
The White House has also said it will be asking Congress to rescind funding for the CPB as part of a $9.1 billion package of cuts. Local stations operate on a combination of government funding, donations and philanthropic grants, and stations in smaller markets are particularly dependent on the public money.
WMMT, based in the eastern Kentucky community of Whitesburg, can be heard in parts of five Appalachian states. The station’s general manager, Teddy Wimer, said listeners “want to hear people that sound like folks that they know from Appalachia,” and the station, which currently operates from a renovated Winnebago called the Possum Den, relies on CPB funding.
“We’re in an economically disadvantaged area of the country,” Wimer said. “Most of our listeners who really rely upon our programming don’t have the funds to ramp up their support.”
Livingston said about 30% of their funding comes from the CPB. Right now, he says, it’s too early to know if the cuts will actually happen or what they would impact if they do come through.
Local flavor is a factor in listenership and credibility
Along the West Virginia-Virginia border, more than three hours from Washington, D.C., residents can pick up signals from radio stations far away. But those “aren’t going have the local flavor and impact that we do,” said Scott Smith, general manager of Allegheny Mountain Radio. “This is the only game in town for that sort of thing.”
In his home base of Monterey, Virginia, Smith said there’s about a 4 -square-mile (10.3-square-kilometer) area of cell coverage with one cell tower. The station has proven to be a vital source of information during natural disasters. In 2012, residents relied on it after a derecho knocked out power to 680,000 customers across West Virginia and it took nearly two weeks for some areas to get their service restored.
“Yeah, we play music. Yeah, we get on the air and joke around,” he said. “But we’re here providing basic level services of information, emergency information, that sort of thing, to our communities. And as part of that, we’re a pretty critical link in this area for the emergency alert system.”
Smith, who has a staff of 10 people, said 68% of Allegheny Mountain Radio’s annual budget comes from CPB.
“What CPB does fund the most is small rural radio,” Smith said. “When you take 60% of our income away, that’s not readily or easily replaceable.”
Smith calls it a “wait-and-see game” on whether Congress will act on the CPB funding.
“The answer to how we move forward is vague,” Smith said. “We will still continue to be here as long as we can be.”
