Australia’s government will prioritize dealing with the “dark shadow” of the U.S.-China trade war following its resounding reelection victory, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Sunday, after a campaign that highlighted concerns over U.S. trade policy and the global economy.
Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese, Australia’s first prime minister to win a second consecutive term in two decades, promised in remarks on Sunday that he would run a disciplined and orderly government, stressing that Australians had voted for unity.
The center-left Labor Party appeared likely to expand its majority in parliament to at least 85 seats from 77, the *********** Broadcasting Corp projected, after most polls had suggested it would struggle to keep its slim hold on the 150-seat lower house. More than two-thirds of votes have been tallied, with counting to resume on Monday.
Echoing an election in Canada less than a week earlier, Australia’s conservative opposition leader, Peter Dutton, lost his seat as voters, who initially focused on cost-of-living pressures, grew increasingly concerned over U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs and other policies.
“We will be a disciplined, orderly government in our second term, just like we have been in our first,” Albanese told reporters while visiting a coffee shop in his Sydney electorate where he said his late mother took him as a child.
“The *********** people voted for unity rather than division,” Albanese added in brief public comments.
Polls had shown Labor trailing the opposition conservative coalition for nine months until March, amid widespread angst about the government’s handling of inflation.
But the polls flipped when the conservatives unveiled a proposal to slash the federal workforce, which was compared to the Trump administration’s moves to cut back government agencies. A proposal to force federal workers back to the office five days a week was also criticised as unfair to women.
Trump’s April 2 tariff announcement added to voters’ unease as it sent shockwaves through global markets and raised concerns about the impact on their pension funds.
“The immediate focus is on global economic uncertainty, U.S. and China, and what it means for us,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the *********** Broadcasting Corp.
“What’s happening, particularly between the U.S. and China, does cast a dark shadow over the global economy … We need to have the ability, and we will have the ability, to manage that uncertainty.”
Former conservative member of parliament Keith Wolahan, who conceded his seat at the election, told the ABC his party had mis-read the public mood.
“It was clear that our party has an issue in urban Australia, which is where most people live,” he said.
“We need to really dig deep and think about who we are and who we fight for and who makes up Australia,” Wolahan added.

Fremantle Dockers midfielder Hayden Young could miss up to six weeks after hamstring injury
Fremantle Dockers midfielder Hayden Young could miss up to six weeks after hamstring injury
Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young is set for an extended stint on the sidelines with the hamstring injury suffered against St Kilda expected to keep him out for at least a month.
Young missed the start of the Dockers’ campaign with two strains to his right hamstring but strung together three consecutive games in the AFL after returning through the WAFL.
However, the run came to a devastating end for the 24-year-old on Friday night at Marvel Stadium, Young clutching high up on the back of his leg in pain after a diving tackle during the second quarter of the Docker’s nightmare defeat to St Kilda.
The defender-turned-midfielder was assisted from the ground by a trainer and taken straight to the rooms.
He was then subbed out of the clash barely five minutes later, with 7NEWS’ Mitch Cleary reporting that the star could miss four to six weeks on Sunday.
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir couldn’t hide his concern during the post-match press conference either.
“We’ll get a scan, but it doesn’t look great,” he said
“It looks serious. It is concerning.”
The injury compounded another horror road trip to Melbourne for Fremantle who just a fortnight ago were stunned by the Demons at the MCG.
The Dockers managed just one goal for the entire first half and had just two heading into the last quarter before succumbing to a 14.10 (94) to 5.3 (33) hammering.

If you see purple paint, stop walking. What your state’s paint law means.
If you see purple paint, stop walking. What your state’s paint law means.
If you spot purple paint on your early morning hike, it may be best to turn around and find another route, because you might be trespassing.
Many U.S. states abide by the “purple paint law,” which allows land and property owners to use purple paint marks on trees and fences to deter people from trespassing. Using the paint is akin to posting a “No Trespassing” sign, although not everyone knows what it means.
So far, more than 20 states have a “purple paint law” in place, the Hudson Valley Post reported. Officials chose the color purple because it stands out in a natural setting, is not used in the forestry industry and is a hue people who are colorblind can identify, the outlet said.
Purple paint is also a preferred option over signs because property owners often struggle with keeping signs up due to wind, rain or even vandals, according to Carolina Forestry & Realty.
While purple is used in most U.S. states, some states with similar laws designate different colors, such as orange, blue, silver, yellow and red. For example, the paint used in Maryland is blue since the state’s law was passed in 1989, according to the University of Maryland Extension.
A no trespassing sign is nailed to a tree and chunks of concrete are spray-painted with purple, a common “no trespassing” indicator.
What U.S. states have the ‘purple paint law’?
According to AL.com, the U.S. states with laws identifying purple paint (or designated colors) for “no trespassing” include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
The laws have some restrictions depending on the state. For instance, in Pennsylvania, the statute is effective in all but Philadelphia and Allegheny counties.
What happens if you violate the ‘purple paint law’?
Consequences of violating the “purple paint law” vary depending on the state, but they include charges, fines and possibly jail time.
According to David M. Lurie, a Missouri-based criminal defense attorney, not knowing what the lines mean and unintentionally trespassing is “not a valid defense.” He added that the punishment for crossing the lines could vary depending on what happened after “you went onto someone else’s property by mistake.”
“If you harmed an animal or took something, that would be yet another offense,” the attorney says. “If you did no harm and left when you were told to leave or realized you were on someone’s private property, many property owners wouldn’t call law enforcement.”

‘People Who Are Salaried Are Crying’: Taxes on Workers Add to Debt Misery
‘People Who Are Salaried Are Crying’: Taxes on Workers Add to Debt Misery
The pay stubs tell the story. Hefty deductions to help cover the cost of Kenya’s new funds for affordable housing and health insurance. More money subtracted for jacked-up contributions to the National Social Security Fund and an increase in the tax rate.
In a matter of months, Kenyans with a 45,000-shilling-a-month salary — roughly $350 — saw their take-home pay shrink 9 percent, to $262.
Pay stubs for an employee at Shining Hope for Communities, a nonprofit in Kenya:
JUNE 2024
“People who are salaried are crying,” said Kennedy Odede, the founder of a self-help association in Nairobi’s Kibera slum.
The increased payroll taxes are one element of President William Ruto’s desperate bid to raise revenue to keep the government running and pay off Kenya’s staggering foreign debt.
New excise taxes were put on sugar, alcohol and plastics. A tax on business profits doubled to 3 percent. Government fees for money transfers and for phone and internet data services went up 15 to 20 percent. A tax on every import, including essentials like wheat and cooking oil, to be used for railroad development was increased to 2 percent from 1.5 percent. Some exemptions for retirees were scrapped. The list goes on.
Tax increases are never popular. But the impact on countries like Kenya, with low incomes and crippling debt, is particularly acute. Years of harum-scarum borrowing and spending combined with economic wallops from the Covid-19 pandemic, soaring interest rates and inflation helped drive up Kenya’s debt to $80 billion.
Kenya has to use nearly 60 percent of its revenue for paying off its loans. It is a common problem across Africa, where many countries spend more on interest payments than on health or education.
At the same time, countries need billions of dollars in new financing for basic medical care, schools, clean water, sewage systems, paved roads and climate-related disaster relief.
Getting the country’s finances in order is a prerequisite for long-term growth. But there are limited options to raise such revenue in Kenya, where 40 percent of its 52 million people live in poverty and youth unemployment is estimated to top 25 percent. Small businesses and subsistence agriculture make up much of the economy.
According to one estimate, 83 percent of the country’s labor force works in jobs that are out of tax collectors’ sight, including as hairdressers, maids, street sellers and drivers.
That means the sliver of the population that works in enterprises that record salaries bears most of the tax burden.
“Our buying power has really decreased because of the taxes,” said Elizabeth Okumu, who works at Shining Hope for Communities, or SHOFCO, the nonprofit organization Mr. Odede started two decades ago.
The country’s economic crisis has pushed the value of the shilling lower in relation to the dollar, meaning that the cost of imports has soared. Six months ago, a thousand shillings ($7.73) were enough for cooking oil, flour, rice and sugar, said Ms. Okumu, chairwoman of SHOFCO’s urban network in Nairobi. Now, she said, she can buy only sugar and flour with that same amount.
Last year, proposed tax increases set off deadly riots in Nairobi, the capital. More than 50 people were killed, and part of Parliament was set on fire. The government temporarily backed down, only to reimpose many of the additional taxes and fees a few weeks later.
The government has been talking to the International Monetary Fund about a new loan package. The fund is likely to ask for additional guarantees that the Ruto administration will cut spending and raise more revenue. But you can’t squeeze much water from a wrung-out towel.
Behind the widespread discontent with specific policies is a deep cynicism about the government’s ability to either pay back the debt or provide essential services.
Regular reports from the country’s auditor general, Nancy Gathungu, detail gross examples of corruption or mismanagement. At the end of last year, for example, she said, the government could not account for more than $1.24 billion that had been earmarked for debt payments. In March, Ms. Gathungu reported that $64 million worth of government-funded Covid-19 vaccines had never been delivered. Critics have also fumed about extravagant spending by government officials.
“Ruto says we need to pay our debts, but there are no public services to show for it,” said Tatiana Gicheru, a student at Strathmore University in Nairobi. “I can’t walk into a government hospital and get any services.”
Ms. Gicheru, 21, sat outside Java House, a coffee chain in Nairobi, and sipped a latte with her friend Jewel Ndung’u. Ms. Ndung’u, 25, graduated from Strathmore two years ago and has been looking for full-time work as an analyst or a developer. From September to January, she said, she applied for 73 jobs. She got half a dozen callbacks and no job offers.
Where is the affordable housing? Where are health services and public transportation? Ms. Ndung’u asked. Ms. Gicheru added, “Suddenly the system is crumbling.”
Ms. Ndung’u said she would rather see Kenyans directly pay off the debt to China, the country’s biggest bilateral creditor, by using M-Changa, a digital fund-raising platform, instead of giving the money to the government through taxes and trusting it to do it.
As taxes rise, Kenyans have grown angrier about the lack of public services. In November, a crowd of people frustrated about dilapidated roads in Syokimau, a few miles south of Nairobi’s main airport, jeered as they forced their council representative to walk through flooded, muddy streets.
In the southwestern part of Nairobi is Kibera, considered the largest urban slum in Africa. Its dirt streets teem with shoppers, pedestrian commuters, peddlers, hustlers, students in neat uniforms and residents filling bright yellow jerrycans with clean water from coin-operated taps. They navigate around piles of garbage and occasional raw sewage as well as motorbikes and bicycles hauling oversize loads better suited to a sport utility vehicle. There are no government-funded sanitation services in Kibera.
The jampacked skyline features ramshackle homes of plasterboard, rusted roofs, and a forest of haphazard poles and wires on which ******** electricity hookups hang like Christmas ornaments.
Benedict Musyoka, a youth community organizer in Kibera, said a young man had told him: “I won’t marry.” Earning enough to support himself is hard enough, let alone with a wife and child. And the man had a degree. “You are taxing hard, and we have no jobs,” Mr. Musyoka said.
With Kenya’s level of debt, there are no easy options, said Thys Louw, a portfolio manager at Ninety One, a global investment firm in London. Expanding the revenue base — bringing more businesses and people who are not currently paying taxes into the system — is crucial, he said. And there are too many exemptions.
In Kenya, taxes amounted to 16.6 percent of the country’s total output in 2022, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The share is not unusual in Africa, but half the amount found in richer industrialized nations.
June will be one year since the riots, and talk of commemorative gatherings and further protests is bubbling. That is also when the government will be finishing a new budget, which could possibly include further tax rises.
Many people like Ms. Okumu at SHOFCO fear there will be more riots. People work so hard, she said, hoping “that tomorrow they’ll see the light.”
“But when tomorrow comes, it’s still darkness.”
Abdi Latif Dahir contributed reporting.

West Coast star Elliot Yeo to have further surgery on troublesome ankle as Eagles clearance concerns continue
West Coast star Elliot Yeo to have further surgery on troublesome ankle as Eagles clearance concerns continue
West Coast star Elliot Yeo is set for further surgery on his troublesome ankle injury which is set to sideline him until the second half of the season.
It is a huge blow for the Eagles who are trying to find a solution to their clearance conundrum, with the team struggling in the middle of the ground in every game this season.
Yeo injured both his knee and ankle in his right leg after he went down in a tackle during match simulation in January.
It was hoped that the 31-year-old would return early in the season, but complications in his recovery from the ankle injury forced the club to send him to a specialist on Thursday.
Eagles coach Andrew McQualter revealed the dual All-*********** would require further surgery to rectify the issue.
“Yeoy is going to have some surgery just to remove some hardware from his ankle,” he said.
“He’ll have a couple of weeks off legs and then build. We’re really confident Yeoy is going to play a fair chunk of football towards the end of the season.
“I’m not exactly sure where that will be yet but that (surgery) will happen early next week and then he’ll have a few weeks to let the wound heal and then he’ll get to work.
“He was having challenges to progress his rehab prior to this, I think at least he’s got an answer now of what needs to happen for the next steps.”
Yeo’s absence in the midfield has been sorely felt in the opening months of McQualter’s reign.
The premiership star led the Eagles for clearances (131), tackles (129) and contested possessions (244) last year while averaging 22 disposals in 20 games.
Tim Kelly leads the Eagles for clearances in 2025 with only 24 through his team’s first eight games, ahead of Liam Baker (22), Harley Reid (21) and Elijah Hewett (19).
West Coast have been the worst clearance team this season and it was evident again on Saturday night, with Melbourne smashing them 49-26 in a 32-point win at Optus Stadium.
McQualter tried several moves to rectify the issue, with forwards Liam Ryan and Tyler Brockman as well as half-back Liam Baker swinging into the centre bounces as he tried to reverse the trend.
Camera IconLiam Ryan. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images
It mattered little as Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn (nine clearances), Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca (eight) and former skipper Jack Viney (six) dominated in the midfield.
“We tried a fair few things… you would have seen a few of the things we tried,” McQualter said of Saturday night.
“We tried structure, we tried personnel. Firstly, we tried to just coach our mids really hard, talking to our mids, that’s the first thing we spoke about.
“And then we had to pull some levers to change things, and it did in some ways even out a little bit in the second half… but it was just a bit overwhelming.”
McQualter conceded moving the magnets also hurt the Eagles because of a lack of consistency in the role.
“You learn but it actually sometimes makes the game more challenging,” he said.
Camera IconAndrew McQualter suffered his eighth straight loss to start his coaching career. Credit: Daniel Carson/AFL Photos
“The more levers you pull, the more things are out of whack for what you plan for all week.
“Potentially the more confusion that comes in the game. It’s a fine line as a coach and a coaching group to how many levers you try to pull at one time to fix an area.
“We are learning what works for us and we’ll learn more about what it will look like and how we need to look to get the game looking the way we need and want it to.”

MAGA Melts Down Over Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Pope Post
MAGA Melts Down Over Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Pope Post
Even President Donald Trump‘s staunchly loyal MAGA base appeared to turn against the Republican president for posting an AI-generated image of himself as pope.
Trump shared the AI-generated image in a Friday night Truth Social post after telling reporters that he “would like to be Pope.” He quipped that he was his own “No. 1 choice” to replace the late Pope Francis. However, some MAGA believers felt that not even Trump is above the papacy.
“This is worse than trolling. You’re going to lose a lot of Catholic support over stunts like this,” wrote an X commentator who described themself as a Catholic and a conservative.
Another commentator on X added: “I love Trump but find his Pope meme disrespectful and insulting. God will not be mocked. Not a wise decision. That said I pray for him. I pray for America.”
Trump’s former White House communications director and practicing Catholic, Anthony Scaramucci, also slammed the president’s “stupidity.
“Yes I get. You are trolling and trying to trigger all of us. Especially us Catholics,” Scaramucci wrote. “But the arrogance and general stupidity and the disgrace that you represent will blow back on all of you.”
Vice President JD Vance appeared to brush off the “joke” with a spurious message about “stupid wars.”
“As a general rule, I’m fine with people telling jokes and not fine with people starting stupid wars that kill thousands of my countrymen,” he wrote.
Another commentator on X added: “Mr. President—please cease this offensive and sacrilegious behavior,” with others questioning how such a “satire” would play if the shoe were on the other foot.
“This is not funny. This is not satire. This is EXTREMELY DISRESPECTFUL towards catholics. Shows poor judgement,” tweeted X user Juan Santana. “Would you do a similar joke with other religions’ leaders? Shocked. I was hoping both @realDonaldTrump and @WhiteHouse had been hacked, but it seems not.”
Yet other MAGA Catholics appeared to double down on their support.
“Nope!!! Didn’t lose me!!! I LOVE the humor and trolling @potus does of all the Libtards and Democrats!!!!” wrote a commentator.
Another X commentator added, “It’s a joke. It is not even an offensive joke, and I’m Catholic.”

Gary ****** Highlights Why Musk’s Leadership Still Anchors Tesla’s Valuation
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.
After a news report claimed that Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) was looking to replace CEO Elon Musk, a longtime Tesla bull dismissed the idea, calling the likelihood of such a move extremely low.
What Happened: On Thursday night, Gary ******, the managing partner at The Future Fund LLC, and a Tesla bull for years, addressed speculation about Musk’s potential ouster in a post on X, dismissing concerns regarding the board seeking his replacement.
In his post, ****** said if Musk stepped down as CEO but stayed on as a Chief Technology Officer or a Chief Product Officer, Tesla’s stock could drop 5% to 10%. A complete departure, he warned, could trigger a 20% to 25% decline, wiping out nearly $220 billion in shareholder value.
Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — you can become an investor for $0.80 per share today.
******’s post highlights the extent to which Musk still anchors Tesla’s $880 billion market cap, a key reason why he believes the “odds are low” that the board chooses someone to replace him.
The noted fund manager posted this on X, with screenshots of Benzinga’s report on Musk’s possible replacements based on prediction markets.
The post came just hours after Musk himself addressed the rumors, blasting The Wall Street Journal’s report as an “extremely bad breach of ethics” and a “deliberately false article.”

Scheffler’s eight-shot lead keeps rivals in the dark
Scheffler’s eight-shot lead keeps rivals in the dark
Scottie Scheffler’s comfortable lead at his home-town CJ Cup Byron Nelson was the same late in the third round as it was at the start, even without the dominance the top-ranked player showed over the first 36 holes.
Then he found that form again, and made a big lead even ******* at 23 under while finishing after sunset on Saturday (Sunday AEST).
Scheffler has an eight-shot lead after a five-under 66 capped by birdies on three of the final five holes – the last on the par-5 18th more than 13 hours after the day began with about half the field needing to complete the weather-delayed second round, including 18 players who hadn’t even started.
Erik von Rooyen (65), Adam Schenk (65) and Ricky Castillo (67) are 15 under, with Kurt Kitiyama (68) and Jhonattan Vegas (67) another shot back.
Karl Vilips is the leading ***********, tied for 46th place at seven under, 16 shots behind Scheffler.
Vilips opened the tournament with a dazzling six-under 65, followed by a one-over 72, then a two-under 69 in the third round.
Compatriot Cam Davis is five under for the tournament sharing 61st place, after rounds of 69, 67 and 72.
Scheffler had his first two bogeys of the tournament and was two under for the day through 13 holes after missing the PGA Tour record for the lowest 36-hole score by one shot at 124 (18 under). His six-shot lead after two rounds was a Nelson record.
At the short par-4 14th, Scheffler drove the green before settling for a tap-in birdie, then put his tee shot at the long par-3 15th inside four feet for another birdie.
The ***** for darkness had already sounded after Scheffler, Castillo and Sam Stevens teed off on 18 when the group in front was still in the fairway but cleared them to hit to try to save time.
Scheffler couldn’t see his second shot from the rough after impact, but it reached the green. He two-putted from 31 feet for the biggest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since Rory McIroy also led by eight on the way to winning the 2011 US Open.
“I saw it take off the way I wanted it to,” Scheffler said of his approach on 18. “But after that I couldn’t see that far. Really, I’d say the most challenging part was reading a green.”
Van Rooyen was in the rough beside the green on 18 in two shots and looking for another birdie that would have matched the low around of the day, only to need four strokes from there for a bogey.
Schenk, who had missed six consecutive cuts coming into the Nelson, also carded a 65 at the TPC Craig Ranch course in the Dallas suburbs.
Stevens started the day alone in second behind Scheffler, and was the only remaining player without a bogey when he had four in a five-hole stretch. The native of nearby Fort Worth was among five players at 13 under after a 70.
That group included Antoine Rozner, who had the low around of the day at 63.

Man Wins $167 Million Powerball Jackpot with His Mom. Then, 4 Days Later, He Lands in Jail
James Farthing and his mom won the $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, the largest lottery prize in Kentucky history, on April 26
Four days later, Farthing allegedly got into a fight at a Florida hotel and kicked a deputy who attempted to break it up
Farthing now faces several charges, including a felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer
A Kentucky man was over the moon after winning the biggest lottery prize in the state’s history. But four days later, he was behind bars.
On the night of Saturday, April 26, James Farthing learned that his $2 Powerball ticket that he bought his mom was a winner, and the duo had won a $167.3 million jackpot, the largest lottery prize in the history of Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Lottery.
Along with his mom, Linda Grizzle, Farthing, 50, collected the prize — and posed for photos with a giant check — on Monday, April 28, with the Georgetown native telling the Kentucky Lottery that “it’s going to be a good Mother’s Day.” He also shared plans to “pay off my debt.”
Grizzle was shocked, telling the company she “would have never dreamed” of winning the historic prize and saying that it still “hasn’t sunken in yet.”
However, the mother-son duo’s celebration was short-lived. Days later, on Wednesday, April 30, Farthing was arrested.

The newly minted lottery winner was at a hotel out of state on April 30, when an altercation broke out, leading a deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to arrest him, according to police records obtained by Kentucky outlet WKYT, Louisiana Fox affiliate WVUE-DT and USA Today.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, May 3.
According to USA Today, Farthing was at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach, Fla., when a fight broke out, and Farthing allegedly punched another patron in the face.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend was allegedly also trying to fight guests of the hotel, per USA Today. She “appeared very intoxicated,” the affidavit said, “and was yelling, screaming and making incoherent statements.”
After the Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to break up the altercation, Farthing allegedly kicked him in the face, USA Today reported. Following the alleged kick — which caused swelling and redness in the deputy’s face, per an arrest affidavit — he allegedly attempted to resist arrest by fleeing the hotel, but was apprehended, the outlet reported.
Farthing was booked into jail on April 30 and charged with one felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer and two misdemeanor counts of battery and resisting an officer, as well as a parole violation, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE.
His girlfriend, whose identity has not been shared publicly, was also charged and now faces one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, according to USA Today.
It is not immediately clear if Farthing or his girlfriend have obtained legal representation to comment on their behalf.
According to WKYT, Farthing was on parole through August 2024 for a series of charges in Kentucky. His past convictions include drug- and theft-related charges, as well as tampering with evidence and engaging in organized crime, the outlet reported.

‘air-dried’ priest was embalmed via *******
‘air-dried’ priest was embalmed via *******
The mystery of a mummy from an Austrian village has been solved, according to researchers who say it was embalmed in an unexpected way – via the *******.
Intrigue had long swirled around the mummified body stored in the church crypt of St Thomas am Blasenstein. The remains were rumoured to be the naturally preserved corpse of an aristocratic vicar, Franz Xaver Sidler von Rosenegg, who died in 1746 at the aged of 37, gaining the mummy the moniker of the “air-dried chaplain”.
Now experts say they have discovered the body was embalmed with the abdominal and pelvic cavities packed with wood chips, fragmented twigs, fabrics such as hemp and silk, and zinc chloride – materials that would have absorbed fluids inside the body.
Dr Andreas Nerlich, a pathologist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany and first author of the study, said the discovery was a surprise as there was no external evidence for such a process.
“The body wall was not opened – therefore the only entrance possible was the *******,” he said, noting this was very different from previously known methods of embalming, including those from ancient Egypt.
Writing in the journal Frontiers in Medicine, Nerlich and colleagues reported how the mummy had previously been externally examined by experts and studied via X-rays among other investigations. While the X-rays did not detect the internal stuffing, they did reveal a round structure inside the mummy’s left lower bowel – leading to rumours that the individual had died after swallowing a poisonous capsule.
During a recent renovation of the crypt, Nerlich and colleagues gained approval to carry out a partial autopsy, CT scans and other analyses. The researchers discovered the mummy – which has a well-preserved upper body, but decay to the face, lower legs and feet – is that of a man, most likely between 35 and 45 years of age, with radiocarbon dating of a skin sample suggesting he died between 1734 and 1780.
The team note these insights fit with what is know about Sidler, adding that an analysis of bone, tooth and skin samples revealed the man’s diet was consistent with that of a local parish vicar in the region, being rich in animal products and central European grain varieties.
As expected for a man of the cloth who had an easy life, the skeleton showed no signs of stress – while the corpse showed evidence of long-term pipe-smoking and bunions. “Both wearing pointy shoes and smoking [a] pipe are very typical for a priest at that time,” said Nerlich.
As for the “poisonous capsule”, the researchers discovered the object was a single glass bead – similar to those used for rosaries – that may have entered the body as a decoration on the fabric used for stuffing.
Sidler’s cause of death, the team added, was most likely severe bleeding into the lungs as a result of tuberculosis, with the body showing signs of the disease.
Yet why Sidler was embalmed remains unclear. While the team said the evidence suggests it was carried out to avoid the spread of infection by miasma – or “bad air” – Nerlich said another potential explanation was that Sidler was preserved for transport to his home monastery of Waldhausen.
And he may not have been the only one to receive such treatment. “This is the first case with this type of documented embalming,” Nerlich said. “So we have no idea how often or where this has been performed, although we assume that this type of ‘short-term preservation’ was used much more often than we might expect from this single case.”

Tarryn Thomas set to be charged by police after allegedly caught in possession of drugs
Tarryn Thomas set to be charged by police after allegedly caught in possession of drugs
Former AFL player Tarryn Thomas is expected to be charged on summons after he was allegedly caught in possession of drugs over the weekend.
Police searched Thomas’ Lamborghini after they found him parked in a no standing zone.
7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed details of the alleged incident that happened in the Melbourne CBD.
“Tarryn Thomas and another man were allegedly caught in possession of drugs and deal bags in the CBD of Melbourne,” he said on Sunday Footy Feast.
“In a statement to 7NEWS, police have confirmed a 24-year-old Thomastown man and a 25-year-old Ormond man are both expected to be charged on summons.
“This came after a Lamborghini that both males were in, were spotted in a no-standing zone.
“Officers then executed a search on that vehicle where they found the drugs and the deal bags.”
The incident comes three weeks after Thomas was allegedly held hostage at gunpoint over a car deal gone wrong in Ballarat.
Thomas remains in the football wilderness after a controversial end to his AFL career.
He had been ineligible to play football at any level after the integrity unit last year found he had engaged in multiple acts of misconduct, including threatening a woman in direct messages.
He was suspended for 18 matches and subsequently axed by North Melbourne.
In November, Thomas walked free from court on a good behaviour bond, avoiding a criminal conviction after police dropped a charge of using a telecommunications service to harass a woman.
Earlier this year, the AFL said Thomas was eligible for a state-league return after showing a “consistent change in his behaviour” and completing an education and behavioural change program.
Despite spending time at different clubs around the country, no VFL or WAFL club signed him.
He is not permitted to enter the 2025 AFL mid-season draft, while no decision has been made on whether he can return to the top level next year.
Thomas, who was taken with pick No.8 in the 2018 AFL draft, played 69 games for the Kangaroos.

Graduating students at the University of Alabama react to President Trump’s commencement speech
Graduating students at the University of Alabama react to President Trump’s commencement speech
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — President Donald Trump’s commencement speech at the University of Alabama brought the Class of 2025 to its feet Thursday night.
Soon-to-be graduates Ryann Levendusky, Hayley Gonzalez and Gracie Fortson made sure they were there to see it for themselves.
“We thought it was a once in a lifetime experience like it’s not every day you can just go watch the President of the United States at your college campus. So, it’s like kind of unbelievable that he was here to celebrate our graduation and everything,” Fortson said.
Those in the audience, many of whom were made up of UA graduates themselves, made sure to see to see Trump in person for the first time.
“Anytime I have the opportunity to see the president speak I’m going to come out and see it. I know he had some wisdom to share with all the graduating students so we got to hear that,” alumnus Daniel Adkins said.
Trump’s words, where he encouraged graduates not to “waste their youth” but to “fight,” particularly touched students like Liam McIntyre and Charlie Leahy, who said they’re walking away feeling confident about post-graduation.
“What he said tonight just leaves me with excitement for the future and what I can bring to this country,” Leahy said.
Students said they plan to implement Trump’s words of encouragement into their own lives.
