King joins crowds as *** marks 80 years since WWII’s end
King Charles and other senior royals have joined veterans and crowds to watch a grand military parade and flypast at the start of four days of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
The United Kingdom government has planned a series of events in the run-up to the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender that took effect on May 8, 1945.
It is observed around that date in many countries, including France, the United States and Russia.
The celebrations, which come as US President Donald Trump is pressing for a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war, kicked off on Monday when London’s famous Big Ben clock struck at midday and extracts from British war leader Winston Churchill’s VE Day speech were read out.
“My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class,” actor Timothy Spall said, reciting the words spoken by Churchill to cheering crowds eight decades ago.
“It’s a victory of the Great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny.”
More than 1300 members of the ***’s armed forces marched through central London from outside parliament to Buckingham Palace, watched by the King, who offered a salute as they passed, alongside Queen Camilla, Prince William and his wife Kate, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and veterans of the conflict.
Ukrainian armed forces also took part, carrying their country’s blue and yellow flag, in a gesture that underlined the ***’s continued support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Addressing the *** veterans in an open letter, Starmer said: “I want you to know: the whole nation is inspired by the selfless dedication of your example.”
“This week, the country will show you just how thankful we all are. Because we know that without your service, the freedom, peace and joy that these celebrations embody, would not be possible,” he said in the letter published by the government.
In 1945, VE Day was greeted by wild celebrations in London and across Britain.
The late Queen Elizabeth, then a 19-year-old princess, and her younger sister Margaret famously slipped out to join the throng outside Buckingham Palace, believed to be the only time during her 96 years she mingled with the public unrecognised.
Monday’s parade concluded with a flypast by historical military aircraft and the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows display team, watched by the royals from the balcony of Buckingham Palace as crowds – many of them carrying the red, white and blue Union Jack – flocked below to take in the spectacle.
The royals, who waved to the onlookers gathered outside, were also due to host about 50 veterans and others who lived through the war for a tea party inside the palace.

A Single Geographical Change to Gotham Turned Arkham Asylum Into an S-Tier Freakshow
A Single Geographical Change to Gotham Turned Arkham Asylum Into an S-Tier Freakshow
Imagine taking in the best experience of being the Dark Knight himself, where you fight crime, solve mysteries, and bring justice to Gotham City. Well, you don’t have to imagine that anymore because Rocksteady games have curated that experience for you in the form of the Batman: Arkham franchise.
While the whole franchise is a masterpiece of its own, Batman: Arkham Asylum made one change in its map, which made the game a monument in the entire industry. Of course, we are talking about how the developers changed the Arkham Asylum from the comics into a full-fledged island in the game. Let’s delve deeper into this.
Batman: Arkham Asylum features a semi-open world map
The Batman: Arkham series is considered one of the greatest video game franchises in the history of gaming. With breathtaking visuals and a ruthless combat system, it literally makes you feel like the Caped Crusader himself. The franchise’s first installment is Batman: Arkham Asylum, which came out back in August 2009 and had sold more than 2.5 million units by the end of September of that year.
Unlike the other games in the series that have a huge open map of the city for Batman to explore, Arkham Asylum featured this semi-open island with interconnected pathways and distinct levels. This big island, instead of a small institution, was introduced for a greater variety of environments in a cohesive narration. All the buildings on the island possessed unique visual identities that prevented the game from feeling monotonous.
The layout of the island also played a part in giving the player a sort of free feeling of their own. Even though it is a semi-open world map, it provided the players with a degree of non-linearity and it also encouraged exploration all within a dedicated space.
The island also enforced the role of a predator for Batman, referencing the whole island as his hunting ground, and from the building ledges to the hidden shafts, it became like a natural habitat to the Dark Knight. This game and level design gave players the freedom to choose their own approach in the location and encouraged the players to think like Batman himself.
Rocksteady made sure that players get enough space to feel like The Batman
The island was not that big, yet it felt huge | Image Credits: Warner Bros.
The decision to set Arkham Asylum on a big, sizable island, rather than a single building, made the game feel much ******* than it actually is. It also gave the developers a richer canvas to craft diverse gameplay scenarios that enhance the environment of the entire game.
The island gave players enough room to truly embody the persona of Batman and provided the developers with a choice to switch from a simple facility to a fully realized island. This change was not about depth, rather, it was a storytelling choice to make the players feel more like the Caped Crusader.
In the end, the game did not just provide us with a place to fight thugs and track villains, but gave us a world that feels alive and breathing, and this heavily animated setting is what makes the Arkham games truly stand out from the rest.

2,300-year-old Swords with Swastika Discovered: Everything You Need to Know
2,300-year-old Swords with Swastika Discovered: Everything You Need to Know
A team of archaeologists has unearthed two 2,300-year-old Celtic swords in France. However, the discovery is gaining massive attention due to the decoration and presence of tiny swastikas found on the swords. As stated in report by Live Science, the French National Institute of Preventive Archeological Research (INRAP), the swords have equivalents in Europe. Apart from the swords, the excavation has resulted in the discovery of burial artifacts and brooches, wherein a few of them possessed polished gems.
About the Swords
While the swords were unearthed, they were discovered intact within their scabbards. One of the sword’s scabbards had an ornate and copper-alloy, specifically designed to be put around the waist. Likewise, the edges of the scabbard were embedded with polished gems, where two of them were identified as having swastika designs engraved on them.
Significance of the Swastika
Considering the significance of the swastikas, the uncertainty persists. The swastikas were traditionally yet infamously, associated with the Nazi regime and World War II horrors, however, their use had different significance in diverse cultures. For instance, the swastikas were mainly used in a Mediterranean context where ornamental designs were used for creating their designs in mainland Europe during the fourth century B.C. and the end of the fifth century. The details were shared by Vincent Georges, archaeologist (INRAP) and Manager (Necropolis Excavation), via email to Live Science.
Details about the Excavation
Originally, the archeological team led by Vincent Georges excavated the swords and other funerary objects in the year 2022, at Creuzier-le-Neuf. This is a small town that possesses a population of 1,500. During the Second Iron Age (450 to 52 B.C.), this town was located at a point that was dominated by three major tribes called Celtic Arvernu, Aedui, and Bituriges.
The discovery was the ultimate result of the successful excavation by the INRAP team, where they dug up to 7,000 square feet beneath the burial area. Due to the highly acidic soil, the burial area, which housed over 100 graves, did not have skeletal remains from the past.
About Burial Artifacts Uncovered
The discovery concluded the presence of metal ornaments and jewellery excavated from most of the tombs. The team discovered 18 damaged brooches and copper-alloy bracelets. One of the brooches consisted of a polished gem. According to the archaeologists, these gems were crafted in the early third century or late fourth century B.C.

Unaware of deep snow, Massachusetts hiker had to be rescued
Unaware of deep snow, Massachusetts hiker had to be rescued
Unaware of the deep snow conditions in New Hampshire, a Massachusetts hiker was unprepared and had to be rescued Saturday.
Around 8 a.m. on Saturday, Richard De Reyna, 57, of Westwood, Massachusetts, went on a hike from the York Pond Trailhead off York Pond Road in Berlin with the intention of summiting Mt. Weeks, Middle Weeks and Mt. Weeks — South Peak and then returning the same way.
However, when he reached Kilkenny Ridge Trail he found deep snow conditions he wasn’t expecting. He continued on but kept losing the trail. He was able to keep re-locating the trail through a mapping program on his cell phone, but that drained the battery.
Around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, with very little battery left, he called 911. He said he was wet, cold and did not have a light source or other essential gear.
A Conservation Officer attempted to call De Reyna back several times in an attempt to assist him in finding the trail and hopefully resulting in a self-rescue. But they were unable to make contact with him because his battery had died.
The team of Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and conservation officers hiked off trail up a drainage and successfully found him at 9:19 p.m. He was still at the exact coordinate where he made his 911 call, which was 4.5 miles from the closest road.
De Reyna was wet, cold and mildly hypothermic. He was provided warm, dry clothes, warm liquids and a light source from the rescue crew then hiked 2.4 miles down to an awaiting ATV where he was driven out the remaining 2 miles, arriving at the staged vehicles at 1:45 a.m.
De Reyna had over 25 years of hiking experience, officials said. Still, he was unaware of the snow conditions in the upper levels of the White Mountains and was not prepared for the conditions he faced.
Officials encouraged hikers to always pack the ten essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets and pants and a knife.
“In addition, it is important to turn your phone off or place it in airplane mode to ensure you have enough battery life remaining if you do require assistance,” officials said.

Colonialist mayhem
To make it in today’s cutthroat world, sometimes it feels like you have to be a taker to survive. It’s a ruthless mentality that makes the rich richer, crooked politicians more powerful, and countries more bloodthirsty. They take, take, and take until there’s nothing left for the rest of us, hoarding money, eliminating jobs, and destroying homes in the name of self preservation. Perhaps that’s what makes your typical video game so appealing. In something like Red Dead Redemption 2, players get to live out a true power fantasy: one where a world is theirs to take. Animals exist to be skinned, plants to be plucked, and corpses to be looted. Even in games where we’re meant to be the “good guy,” we’re often embodying the world of the worst. We become natural disasters that ravage worlds until we choose to stop playing.
Revenge of the Savage Planet takes that subtext and mines it for satirical gold, just as its hero smashes every rock in sight in search of precious metals. Building on the sci-fi comedy of 2020’s Journey to the Savage Planet, developer Raccoon Logic only gets more explicit about its targets while moving the series from a Metroid Prime homage to a third-person adventure game that hides righteous anger behind irreverence. When you don’t have the power to be a true taker, you can at least take no prisoners.
Though its story ultimately feels unfocused and its one-note action leaves it lacking in identity, Revenge of the Savage Planet succeeds as a sci-fi romp. It lets players loose into a series of interplanetary playgrounds designed to be sucked dry by a corporate drone tasked with becoming a bully. It’s a charming slice of dark comedy that’s perhaps not mean enough to totally land its point.
Sound familiar?
It doesn’t take long for Revenge of the Savage Planet to show its teeth. Upon starting my adventure, I’m greeted by a corporate orientation video. A peppy vice president tells me that I am now a member of Alta Interglobal, a holdings company that has acquired my previous employer, Kindred Aerospace. As part of the new family, my job is to be part of an intergalactic colonization mission. Once I unfreeze from my cryopod after a century of sleep, I’ll be dropped on a planet with a habitat and tasked with creating a livable community that Alta can later fill with inhabitants.
That’s followed immediately by a second video informing me that I’ve been fired while asleep, as Alta has axed the entirety of the Kindred staff post-acquisition.
Revenge of the Savage Planet ultimately aims for the irreverence of an Adult Swim show.
That setup will likely sound familiar to you in any number of contexts. Most recently, it’s the story of media holdings company Valnet acquiring gaming website Polygon, only to immediately gut the majority of its staff. If you know anything about the Savage Planet series’ developer, though, you’ll recognize a more personal target for Racoon Logic. Following the release of Journey to the Savage Planet, the studio was bought by Google as part of its short-lived Stadia initiative. Google would shut down Racoon Logic (then known as Typhoon Studios) just a few years later before it could even produce a game. That trauma is very clearly at the center of this sequel, with Alta standing in as the face of corporate incompetence.
The story is at its best when it tugs on that thread. One running sidequest has me uncovering Alta’s dirty laundry, taking what I imagine are thinly veiled shots at Google’s own issues behind the scenes. Less successful is where the narrative ultimately ends up. The stretch up to the final battle takes a left-turn into a meta-commentary about game design that feels entirely disconnected from the Alta story. It’s an underwhelming conclusion that leaves me wondering if all the corporate satire before it is there primarily as an inside joke for the developers (I can’t fully blame them; I’d jump at the opportunity to get my just desserts against my worst bosses too).
Raccoon Logic
Don’t take any of it too seriously. Revenge of the Savage Planet ultimately aims for the irreverence of an Adult Swim show. ultimately aims for the irreverence of an Adult Swim show. There’s a world called Nuflorida. My habitat is filled with over the top commercials that feel like they were pulled out of a Tim and Eric episode. It features an original song about ******** on the company dime. As light as its jabs may feel at times, it still lands plenty of little hits that got some consistent chuckles out of me.
Colonialist mayhem
If you’re still looking for more depth, Revenge of the Savage Planet is most functional as a broad satire on the world’s worst C-words: colonialism and consumerism. As a stranded Kindred employee trained to ***** planets dry, each open-world area I visit is a candy shop that’s mine for the taking. The premise isn’t anything new: Each planet is filled with resources to mine, map activities to check off my list until there are none left, and animals to research — or kick until they explode into a green mist. Everything I gather can be brought back to the computer at my habitat and run through a 3D printer to get new upgrades for my gun, jump pack, and more. The more of a jerk I am, the more efficiently I can bully the local wildlife and hoard resources.
If the first Savage Planet game was a spoof of Metroid Prime, imagining Samus Aran as a total ***** out to disrupt Tallon IV’s peace, the sequel is more of a riff on Subnautica. It’s not a survival game, but it does play with some similar ideas. I need to gather up resources and safely return them to my base to 3D print new gear, craft outfits, or make furniture to decorate my habitat. If I die before I get home, I’ll need to go back out and pick it all up again. Is it right to shoot an adorable little alien racoon just so I can have a pool table? That’s what Revenge of the Savage Planet asks through its gleeful cartoon mischief. My little space man sure doesn’t seem too upset about it, as he joyfully wobbles around and punts critters like soccer ******.
A a delightful sequel that perhaps could have benefitted from being a little meaner.
Naturally, Raccoon Logic gets to have its cake and eat it too. Even if it’s classifiable as parody, it still plays its open-world exploration straight much of the time. I get new gizmos that allow me to grapple up to cliffs, grind on rails, swim underwater, and more. I eventually gain the power to melt amber blockades with goo bombs so I can get chow down on an egg and get a health upgrade. It’s a serviceable, if a little boilerplate, Metroid-adjacent hook, but it still ultimately aims to be a slice of lighthearted fun that can be enjoyed or with a friend in co-op play. Maybe that’s why the story stops short of really pulling the big guns out: Raccoon Logic is still interested in making the kind of game it’s poking fun at.
I don’t mean that as much of a knock here; that’s just the language of this type of genre video game. If anything, the power fantasy isn’t strong enough to intoxicate and poison me. Combat is particularly weak, as my primary weapon is a dinky pea shooter laser. Most enemies just need to be taken down by peppering them with dinky shots, and upgrades like dodge rolls barely charge that. I can scan critters to find their weak spots and attack for extra stun damage, but even its by the books boss battles never feel all too exciting. If you’re going to make me feel like a power hungry prick, at least dial up the absurdity to tempt me down the path of violence.
Sometimes Raccoon Logic’s heart feels like its more in crafting fun little environmental puzzles than colonialist destruction. My favorite gameplay moments have me using conductive goo to carry an electrified mushroom’s charge to a closed door, or navigating an invisible maze by spraying green goop to reveal where the walls are. There’s a sincere joy in figuring out how the handful of alien planets work, from a worm-filled desert to a multi-level mountain. Journey to the Savage Planet‘s Metroid Prime-inspired scan visor returns too and remains a highlight, allowing me to catalogue every plant and critter I find. I’m torn between being a researcher and a menace; the former is more enticing, but the latter drives the satire.
Racoon Logic
I’m left with a delightful sequel that perhaps could have benefitted from being a little meaner. In both Savage Planet games, I find myself wishing that Raccoon Logic would really let me have it. Allow me to really ****** these alien worlds up and punt me into the stratosphere once I’ve crossed too many lines. But then, I’d be a scapegoat, wouldn’t I? It’s like when The Last of Us scolds players for carrying out acts of scripted violence that they can’t avoid. I’m no taker; I’m just trying to survive in the kill or be killed environment that the developers have placed me in. I can empathize with my little spaceman through that lens. He’s just a jester in Alta’s corporate circus, just as Raccoon Logic was a cute plaything to Google.
Perhaps we’re all a little blameless for playing into a world that’s designed as a slapstick colosseum that we’re forced to compete in. And if we’re all clowns to the world’s most powerful forces, maybe it’s time to change which butts we’re punting into the sun.
Revenge of the Savage Planet was tested on PC and Steam Deck OLED.

Credit score impact from student loan collections, default
Credit score impact from student loan collections, default
As of Monday, the U.S. Department of Education is restarting “involuntary collections” on federal student loans that are in default, which may seriously damage the credit scores of millions of borrowers.
Student loan collections efforts have largely been on pause since the pandemic began in March 2020. A new analysis by TransUnion found that consumers who faced default in recent months have seen their credit scores fall by 63 points, on average. For super prime borrowers — or those with credit scores above 780 — who were seriously delinquent, scores sank as much as 175 points. Credit scores typically range between 300 and 850.
“Consumers may find themselves shocked by the dramatic and immediate impact that a default can have on their credit scores,” Joshua Trumbull, senior vice president and head of consumer lending at TransUnion, said in a statement.
More from Personal Finance:Trump administration restarts student loan collectionsWhat loan forgiveness opportunities remain under TrumpIs college still worth it? It is for most, but not all
The credit score implications worsen for borrowers with better scores, research shows. “The ******* they are, the harder they fall,” said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.
Because borrowers in less risky credit tiers typically have fewer dings on their credit, any derogatory mark “has the potential to have a significant and jarring impact,” according to TransUnion. In general, the higher your credit score, the better off you are when it comes to getting a loan.
“Somebody with excellent credit could see a drop of 100 points or more — that’s massive,” Rossman said. “That’s going to make it hard to even get credit and if you do, you will face a sharply higher interest rates on everything from mortgages to car loans.”
9 million face ‘substantial’ score drops, Fed finds
As collection activity resumes, the federal government can seize some or all of certain federal payments including tax refunds and Social Security benefits as well as withhold a portion of borrowers’ paychecks.
“Borrowers who don’t make payments on time will see their credit scores go down, and in some cases their wages automatically garnished,” U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed last month.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York cautioned in a March report that student loan borrowers who are late on their payments could see their credit scores sink by as much as 171 points.
Initially, those borrowers benefitted from the pandemic-era forbearance on federal student loans, which marked all delinquent loans as current. Median credit scores for student loan borrowers rose by 11 points between the end of 2019 to the end of 2020, the Fed researchers found. However, that relief ******* officially ended on Sept. 30, 2024.
“We expect to see more than nine million student loan borrowers face substantial declines in credit standing over the first quarter of 2025,” the Fed researchers wrote in a blog post.
“Although some of these borrowers may be able to cure their delinquencies,” the Fed researchers said, “the damage to their credit standing will have already been done and will remain on their credit reports for seven years.”
Lower credit scores could result in reduced credit limits, higher interest rates for new loans and overall lower credit access, the researchers also said.
Both VantageScore and FICO reported a drop in average scores starting in February as early- and late-stage credit delinquencies rose sharply, driven by the resumption of student loan reporting. Borrowers who are late on their payments could see their credit scores tank by as much as 129 points, VantageScore reported at the time.
Currently, around 42 million Americans hold federal student loans and roughly 5.3 million borrowers are in default, according to the Education Department. Another 4 million borrowers are in “late-stage delinquency,” or over 90 days past due on payments.
One in five student loan borrowers were reported as being over 90 days past due by the end of February, the data from TransUnion showed.
“It’s surprising how many people who should be paying have been reported as not paying,” said Michele Raneri, vice president and head of U.S. research and consulting at TransUnion, and those “delinquencies will likely tick higher.”

EA Sports FC Mobile will stream select soccer games in-app for free
EA Sports FC Mobile will stream select soccer games in-app for free
EA Sports has partnered up with Major League Soccer to stream four select live matches through EA Sports FC Mobile via the in-game FCM TV portal, completely for free. The matches will air simultaneously with MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, and tuning in through the app will reward players with in-game currency and a one-month free trial to MLS Season Pass.
Two matches will air in May, and another two in September. The first match is Saturday, May 10 between LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls at 7:30 PM ET, and players are invited to play each match-up in-game before the game itself airs. Pit the two teams against each other and try to figure out who will come out on top in the real thing (or not — you get the rewards as long as you watch the game.)
The second match is May 17 between Atlanta United FC and the Philadelphia Union, again at 7:30 PM ET. The two dates and match-ups of the two games in September haven’t been announced yet, but will be shared later in the year.
Apple signed a 10-year rights package with MLS in 2023, but the ratings have been lower than expected, with even pickleball scoring more viewers. Major League Soccer hopes this deal will cahnge that. “This collaboration with EA SPORTS and Apple TV underscores MLS’s commitment to pushing boundaries, innovation and fan-first experiences,” said Camilo Durana, Executive VP at Major League Soccer. “By bringing select live MLS Season Pass matches to EA SPORTS FC Mobile, we’re reaching new and digitally native audiences around the world and continuing to broaden the way we’re building relationships with fans.”
EA Sports FC, along with Apex Legends, were two of the cited reasons for EA’s latest wave of mass layoffs last week. In response to its performance, EA just launched the first-ever EA Sports FC paid season pass, which brings with it cosmetics, in-game currency, and more.

You can now win a one-of-a-kind RTX 5090, but you need to be quick
Although May 4 is behind us, Nvidia is still celebrating Star Wars Day with a giveaway of its best graphics card — the RTX 5090. The card, available in two unique shrouds — one for Star Wars and one for Star Trek — is up for grabs, but time is running out to score this expensive, one-of-a-kind GPU.
“May the Fourth be with you” is a slogan that every Star Wars fan hears at least once a day. A play on the iconic “May the Force be with you,” it’s used to mark May 4th, officially recognized as Star Wars day. This year, Nvidia jumped on the celebration bandwagon, with an interesting twist: Instead of focusing on Star Wars, Nvidia decided to make fans choose between two favorites.
The company prepared two versions of the RTX 5090, and each is up for grabs through a giveaway. Due to the design of the Founders Edition of Nvidia’s RTX 50-series, there’s not much space on the shroud to really celebrate either franchise, but both cards look fantastic regardless. One sports the timeless X-Wing from Star Wars, and the other one the Enterprise NCC-1701 from Star Trek.
The ultimate #MayThe4thBeWithYou showdown
What side of the galaxy are you choosing?

Tell us why you’d choose Star Wars OR Star Trek & use #RTXON to enter to WIN pic.twitter.com/agXUpbV3ym
— NVIDIA GeForce (@NVIDIAGeForce) May 4, 2025
All you need to do to win is to reply to one of Nvidia’s social media posts and explain why you’d choose Star Wars or Star Trek, then add #RTXON. Nvidia values the card at $2,750, but in reality, it’s most likely worth a lot more.
Various terms and conditions apply, but the most important thing is that this contest is not available everywhere. If you live in the U.S., you can’t win the GPU if you’re from the state of New York or Florida, or from Puerto Rico. Many other countries have also been excluded. Additionally, you need to be at least 18 to participate.
The giveaway ends on May 6 at 5 PM PT, so time is running short. The odds may not be in your favor, with thousands of participants trying their luck, but you might as well give it a shot — you never know. I threw my hat in the ring and I’m hoping for the best.

World Snooker Championship 2025: Zhao Xintong closes in on historic victory over Mark Williams in Crucible final
World Snooker Championship 2025: Zhao Xintong closes in on historic victory over Mark Williams in Crucible final
Zhao Xintong is just one frame away from becoming the first player from China to win the World Championship after extending his lead to 17-8 over Mark Williams in the final.
The 28-year-old, who is aiming to become the first amateur to triumph at the Crucible, led 11-6 overnight and was able to take three of the first four frames available on Monday to go 14-7 ahead at the mid-session interval.
And when he compiled a break of 52 to win the next, Zhao looked on course to win his second successive match with a session to spare and would record the biggest winning margin in a world final since Stephen Hendry defeated Jimmy White 18-5 in 1993.
Three-time winner Williams averted that possibility, briefly rallying to ensure the contest would at least extend to Monday evening with a break of 66 to get back to 15-8.
However, the Welshman, 50, who is the oldest ever finalist in Sheffield, was unable to make any further inroads.
His ******** opponent, who was just three years-old when Williams won his first world crown in 2000, capitalised on a missed red to the left middle with a 66 break and cleared up again after Williams failed to drop in a red to the right corner to move on to the brink of a historic victory.
Zhao, who won the *** Championship in 2021 but then served a 20-month ban for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal which rocked the sport, is hoping to join Terry Griffiths and Shaun Murphy as the only qualifiers to capture snooker’s biggest prize since the tournament’s 1977 move to Sheffield.
He would also earn the £500,000 top prize and climb to 11th in the world rankings when he returns to the main professional tour next season.
The best-of-35 final continues on Monday at 19:00 BST and will be shown live on BBC Two.

This domestic manufacturer may gain from tariffs, Canaccord Genuity says
With most if its manufacturing done in the United States, Worthington Enterprises is a tariff-proof stock that can benefit from record-high duties slapped on imported goods, according to one Wall Street analyst. Shares in the Columbus, Ohio-based company that makes dozens of consumer and industrial products, from Coleman propane tanks to acoustic ceiling systems, are already 37% higher in 2025. “We believe this stock is primed for outperformance, being a hidden gem that many investors are generally unaware of since its December 2023 separation from its Steel business, Worthington Steel,” Canaccord Genuity analyst Brian McNamara wrote in a Sunday note. The investment bank upgraded Worthington to buy from hold, and raised its price target by 24%, to $67 per share from $54. Canaccord’s forecast implies roughly 23% upside from Friday’s $51.99 close. McNamara said a recent meeting with company executives left him more optimistic, given Worthington’s “advantageous” manufacturing position. WOR YTD mountain Worthington Enterprises stock in 2025. “The wide-ranging conversations demonstrated a humble, yet confident management team that believes it is well positioned with predominant domestic manufacturing in a tariff-riddled environment,” the analyst said. McNamara noted that Worthington is the sole domestic manufacturer of gas grill cylinders and that peers have moved manufacturing overseas, giving the company a leg up as tariffs push higher. At the same time, McNamara estimated that only $60 million to $80 million of Worthington’s annual revenue comes from products sourced from China. Estimated sales in the fiscal year ending May 31 are pegged to come in at $1.137 billion, according to analyst polled by FactSet. “Some relatively low-priced components and small valves are affected by China tariffs, but management noted they have good relationships, which will help with mitigation efforts,” McNamara said. “The most significant component is steel, which WOR purchases domestically.” The analyst also forecast that if competitors raise prices in response to tariffs, Worthington won’t follow suit or not to the same extent. “If tariff-exposed competitors raise prices, we expect WOR to take less price and prioritize [market] share gains,” McNamara wrote.

Every Unova Pokémon is getting an illustration rare in the Pokémon ****** and White anniversary set
Pokémon’s upcoming trading card game set, which will celebrate 15 years of Pokémon ****** and White, will feature an illustration rare card for every Unova Pokémon, in a franchise first.
Illustration Rares are versions of cards that feature artwork on the entire card. These often depict scenes like a Pokémon‘s habitat or a Pokémon interacting with another Pokémon. The art style of these cards is often significantly more stylized than their standard versions.
While most sets include between 20 and 50 illustration rares, this year’s Pokémon ****** and White anniversary set will feature an illustration rare for every Unova Pokémon. The Pokémon Company have revealed the first 9, which you can view below.
Pokémon ****** Bolt and Pokémon White Flare will be released in Japan in June and in English the following month. The Pokémon Company has yet to reveal the English name of the set, but it has been confirmed that the set will be a “Special Set,” meaning it won’t be released in traditional booster boxes.
Instead, the set will be released in collection box products, Elite Trainer Boxes, and booster bundles.
This new set will celebrate the Unova region, which first debuted in Pokémon ****** and Pokémon White, released for the Nintendo DS in 2010. The set will include all 156 of the Pokémon originally found in the Unova region to celebrate 15 years since the games were released.
Images via PokeBeach
The Pokémon Company has also announced that the set will see the debut of a new rarity type, “BWR.” It’s assumed that this will stand for ****** and White Rare, which will serve as the highest rarity in the new set. The three cards revealed so far featuring this BWR rarity marker include Reshiram, Zekrom and Victini.
The next English Pokémon TCG set, Destined Rivals, will be released on May 30.
Earlier this year, The Pokémon Company released a statement addressing multiple fan reports that trading cards have been difficult to find.

RTX 5080 Super 24GB and 5070 Super 18GB rumored once again – and they could be keenly priced because AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs have ‘spooked’ Nvidia
RTX 5080 Super 24GB and 5070 Super 18GB rumored once again – and they could be keenly priced because AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs have ‘spooked’ Nvidia
Nvidia’s again rumored to have RTX 5080 and 5070 Super variants inbound with 24GB and 18GB of VRAM
They might also be highly overclocked and could boost performance by as much as 15% versus their vanilla versions
Pricing will be crucial, and Nvidia may be so worried about AMD’s RX 9000 family that it might stick with the same MSRPs as the RTX 5080 and 5070
We’re hearing more gossip from the GPU grapevine about what Nvidia might have incoming in the way of Super variants of its RTX 5080 and 5070 graphics cards.
Following rumors about these potential upgrades to the existing Blackwell GPUs floating around last week – insisting the RTX 5080 Super will boost the amount of video RAM to 24GB (from 16GB) – we’ve heard from a regular leaker on YouTube on this topic.
In a new video (see below), Moore’s Law is Dead is quick to point out that none of the information he has represents concrete plans from Nvidia – which also goes for previous rumors – but nonetheless it’s interesting to chew over the purported thinking inside the company right now.
You may like
Which is, according to a source at one of Nvidia’s graphics card making partners, that there have been RTX 5080 GPUs with 24GB and RTX 5070 boards with 18GB in labs since last year.
In other words, testing on such models has been going on for half a year (or more – and various rumors go back some way, too). However, Nvidia told card manufacturers that these variants are ‘on hold’ until either the situation around pricing for video RAM improves – to make the price tags on these supposed Super models suitably palatable for PC gamers – or until Nvidia sees if these variants are really needed based on what AMD is doing.
There’s been a new development last week, though, in that the source claims Nvidia is now saying that RTX 5080 and 5070 Super graphics cards are now ‘likely’ to happen at some point in 2025.
These will apparently be highly overclocked versions of these two GPUs with the respective 24GB and 18GB loadouts that have already been heavily rumored (up from 16GB and 12GB currently).
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
Of course, be cautious about this assertion, but be even more careful with the speculation around the performance boost that this could provide. The source believes we’ll be looking at Super graphics cards that are between 7% to 15% faster than the vanilla RTX 5080 and 5070.
What about pricing? That isn’t yet confirmed, as you’d guess given that we’re not near launch yet. However, according to the source, Nvidia could be looking at keeping the MRSP the same as the current price tags for the RTX 5080 and 5070, or alternatively, applying a slight increase (maybe 10%, or 20% perhaps for the RTX 5080 24GB, the YouTuber guesses).

Analysis: Priming the big guns to fire back at AMD?
A performance gain in the order of 10% to 15% would be impressive for Super variants that use the same core counts as the vanilla RTX 5080 and 5070. That’s because those (theoretical) gains are coming entirely from the VRAM increase and pushing up clocks (by a fair bit, I’d guess – which will also ramp up power usage, it should be noted).
It’s further worth remembering that ratcheting up VRAM by 6-8GB could make quite a difference with certain games in some scenarios, where that capacity matters more. And that the mentioned performance gain would bring the RTX 5080 Super up to more or less match the frame rates delivered by the RTX 4090.
If Nvidia really is considering maintaining pricing at the same level as the RTX 5080 and 5070 while giving gamers that kind of boost, it does show that this is certainly all about firing back at AMD. As the source indicates, the RX 9000 series has ‘spooked’ Nvidia and we’re certainly seeing Team Red gaining GPU turf in the battle of the current-gen graphics cards.
I’m not surprised that Nvidia is therefore feeling the heat, and might be considering launching RTX 5080 and 5070 Super versions that hit the shelves as much more tempting potential purchases. The latter is particularly needed, because as we’ve seen, the RTX 5070 vanilla GPU received a lukewarm reception, and it looks like sales have been shaky – and that’s the key mid-range battleground with AMD.
There’s actually RTX 5070 stock around now at major retailers, and pricing isn’t too bad for these models either. Although, of course, if a compelling RTX 5070 Super arrives, pitched at the same MSRP (or maybe just 10% more), that could create quite a splash. And then Nvidia would need to ensure a robust supply, or face criticism all over again on the stock front.
Which is why if these Super refreshes really are happening, I’m anticipating that they won’t be arriving until later in 2025. Not unless Nvidia really is sweating about how much discrete GPU market share AMD is gobbling up (and Team Green has the ability to crank production lines suitably, too).

Don’t expect lower rates after the Fed meeting
Don’t expect lower rates after the Fed meeting
Mortgage rates have increased on most term lengths today. According to Zillow, the average 30-year fixed rate has climbed by nine basis points to 6.70%, and the 15-year fixed rate is up five basis points to 6.95%. The 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) rate has risen by 15 basis points to 6.88%.
The Federal Reserve meets this week, but mortgage rates are unlikely to drop as a result. According to the CME FedWatch tool, there’s roughly a 97% chance the Fed will keep its rate the same rather than cut it at this meeting. Home loan rates probably won’t plummet in the near future, so if you’re otherwise ready to buy a house, holding out for lower rates probably isn’t worth it.
Dig deeper: How the Fed rate decision impacts mortgage rates
Here are the current mortgage rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.70%
20-year fixed: 6.28%
15-year fixed: 5.95%
5/1 ARM: 6.88%
7/1 ARM: 7.13%
30-year VA: 6.24%
15-year VA: 5.66%
5/1 VA: 6.32%
Remember, these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth.
Read more: How are mortgage rates determined?
These are the current mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.75%
20-year fixed: 6.49%
15-year fixed: 6.08%
5/1 ARM: 7.37%
7/1 ARM: 7.47%
30-year VA: 6.33%
15-year VA: 6.07%
5/1 VA: 6.43%
Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Although it’s not always the case, mortgage refinance rates tend to be a little higher than purchase rates.
You can use the free Yahoo Finance mortgage calculator to play around with how different terms and rates will affect your monthly payment. Our calculator considers factors like property taxes and homeowners insurance when estimating your monthly mortgage payment. This gives you a better idea of your total monthly payment than if you just looked at mortgage principal and interest.
But if you want a quick, simple way to see how today’s rates would impact your monthly mortgage payment, try out the calculator below:
Today’s average 30-year mortgage rate is 6.70%. A 30-year term is the most popular type of mortgage because by spreading out your payments over 360 months, your monthly payment is relatively low.
If you had a $300,000 mortgage with a 30-year term and a 6.70% rate, your monthly payment toward the principal and interest would be about $1,936, and you’d pay $396,900 in interest over the life of your loan — on top of that original $300,000.
The average 15-year mortgage rate is 5.95% today. Several factors must be considered when deciding between a 15-year and 30-year mortgage.
A 15-year mortgage comes with a lower interest rate than a 30-year term. This is great in the long run because you’ll pay off your loan 15 years sooner, and that’s 15 fewer years for interest to compound.
However, your monthly payments will be higher because you’re squeezing the same debt payoff into half the time.
If you get that same $300,000 mortgage but with a 15-year term and a 5.95% rate, your monthly payment would jump up to $2,523 — but you’d only pay $154,225 in interest over the years.
Dig deeper: How much house can I afford? Use our home affordability calculator.
With an adjustable-rate mortgage, your rate is locked in for a set ******* of time and then increases or decreases periodically. For example, with a 5/1 ARM, your rate stays the same for the first five years, then changes every year.
Adjustable rates usually start lower than fixed rates, but you run the risk that your rate goes up once the introductory rate-lock ******* is over. But an ARM could be a good fit if you plan to sell the home before your rate-lock ******* ends — that way, you pay a lower rate without worrying about it rising later.
Lately, ARM rates have occasionally been similar to or higher than fixed rates. Before dedicating yourself to a fixed or adjustable mortgage rate, be sure to shop around for the best lenders and rates. Some will offer more competitive adjustable rates than others.
Mortgage lenders typically give the lowest mortgage rates to people with higher down payments, excellent credit scores, and low debt-to-income ratios. So if you want a lower rate, try saving more, improving your credit score, or paying down some debt before you start shopping for homes.
You can also buy down your interest rate permanently by paying for discount points at closing. A temporary interest rate buydown is also an option — for example, maybe you get a 6.5% rate with a 2-1 buydown. Your rate would start at 4.5% for year one, increase to 5.5% for year two, then settle in at 6.5% for the remainder of your term.
Just consider whether these buydowns are worth the extra money at closing. Ask yourself whether you’ll stay in the home long enough that the amount you save with a lower rate offsets the cost of buying down your rate before making your decision.
Here are interest rates for some of the most popular mortgage terms: According to Zillow data, the national average 30-year fixed rate is 6.70%, the 15-year fixed rate is 5.95%, and the 5/1 ARM rate is 6.88%.
A normal mortgage rate on a 30-year fixed loan is 6.70%. However, keep in mind that’s the national average based on Zillow data. The average might be higher or lower depending on where you live in the U.S.
Mortgage rates probably won’t drop significantly in 2025 — especially over the next several weeks while economists keep an eye on Trump’s tariff policies.

What are ESE coffee pods? Everything you need to know about these quick alternatives to freshly ground coffee
What are ESE coffee pods? Everything you need to know about these quick alternatives to freshly ground coffee
If you like the idea of making fresh espresso every morning, but the thought of measing the right quantity of beans and grinding then yourself sounds like too much hassle, ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) coffee pods could be exactly what you need.
ESE pods aren’t like the aluminum capsules used by the best Nespresso machines. Instead, they’re paper bags, much like teabags, that contain a carefully measured dose of ground espresso beans. To use an ESE pod, just place it in the basket of your espresso machine’s portafilter, where you’d usually put the coffee grounds, twist the handle into place, slip your cup under the spout and start brewing.
Each pod contains 7g coffee (the amount typically used to brew a single shot of espresso) weighed and tamped, and the paper filter measures 45mm diameter.
You may like
The ESE system was developed by Illy, but is patent-free and open to all coffee machine makers and coffee roasters.
Which coffee machines use ESE pods?
Our favorite ESE-compatible espresso machine is the De’Longhi Dedica Style, which has earned a place in our roundup of the best coffee makers. It takes up far less space than a typical coffee maker, but looks great and maintains good pressure when brewing coffee and steaming milk.
Its water tank is quite small, but that’s understandable considering just how tiny it is. For more details, take a look at our full De’Longhi Dedica Style review.
The De’Longhi Dedica Style is our favorite ESE-compatible coffee maker (Image credit: TechRadar)
If you have a manual espresso machine that isn’t ESE-compatible out of the box, don’t worry – all you need is an ESE filter like this one from Flair Espresso, or this one from Gaggia. Fit it into your portafilter handle, add the ESE capsule, and you’re ready to brew.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
If you’re not sure whether your machine will work with ESE pods, or want to make sure you’re buying the right filter, contact the manufacturer for guidance.
Today’s best De’Longhi Dedica Style EC685 coffee machine deals
What are the advantages of ESE coffee pods?
The main benefit of ESE pods is convenience. There’s no need to weigh out a portion of coffee or grind beans, and once you’ve finished with your ESE pod, it’s easy to remove from the portafilter and dispose of. There’s no need to knock a puck of used coffee grounds out of the filter basket, which is potentially messy.
Another big advantage of ESE coffee pods is that, unlike aluminum coffee pods, they are compostable and can be added to your food waste bin or compost heap. You can also use the grounds on your garden to improve soil quality.
Metal coffee capsules can be recycled (see how Nespresso pods are recycled for more details), but ESE pods don’t need any special processing.
What are the disadvantages of ESE coffee pods?
Using ESE pods is more expensive than opting for fresh coffee, and because each one only contains 7g of coffee, to brew a double espresso (the standard amount for drinks like cappuccinos and lattes), you’ll need to use two, one after the other.
Some ESE pods are provided in individual foil wrappers, which keep the coffee fresh but have to be thrown out or recycled. Pods that aren’t wrapped individually, and are sold in plain cardboard boxes, are susceptible to heat, humidity, and light – all of which have a detrimental effect on coffee. The aroma compounds in coffee start to degrade within minutes of grinding, so that’s significant, too.
Where can I buy ESE coffee pods?
You can find ESE coffee pods in most large supermarkets, with Illy (naturally) being the most common brand. Can’t see what you want? You’ll find a wider range of beans, roasts, and decaf coffees in ESE format from specialist coffee suppliers online. We’ve rounded up a few retailers below, but there are many more besides.

Rwanda confirms talks with Trump administration to take in migrants
Rwanda is in the “early stage” of talks with the Trump administration to accept migrants deported by the US, the East African country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungireh has said.
His comments come after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington was “actively searching” for countries that would take in “some of the most despicable human beings”.
Nduhungireh said the talks were “not new to us” as Rwanda had previously agreed to accept migrants deported by the ***.
However, the *** abandoned the scheme, which faced numerous legal changes, after Keir Starmer’s Labour government took office last July.
Speaking to Rwandan TV on Sunday, Nduhungireh said the government was in the “spirit” of giving “another chance to migrants who have problems across the world”.
Nduhungireh added that the talks with the US were continuing, and it was too early to predict their their outcome.
Since coming to office in January, US President Donald Trump has focused on speeding up the removal of undocumented migrants, with the promise of “mass deportations”.
In February, El Salvador offered to take in criminals deported from the US, including those with US citizenship, and house them in its mega-jail.
Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele said his government would do so “in exchange for a fee”.
