Home heating oil and fuel prices drop to four year low Home heating oil and fuel prices drop to four year low Getty Images Around two-thirds of homes in Northern Ireland use home heating oil The price of home heating oil and fuel in Northern Ireland is at its lowest level since 2021, and the advice is to buy now – if you are able. The average price of 500 litres of home heating oil is £258.78, a litre of petrol costs 128.7p and diesel is 133.4p per litre, according to Consumer Council NI’s (CCNI) weekly price checker. In March 2022, 500 litres of home heating oil peaked at £662.86, petrol reached 189.9p per litre in July 2022, and diesel cost an average of 197.5p per litre in June the same year. Despite the recent warm weather and the incoming summer months, CCNI’s Head of Energy Raymond Gormley advised “now is a good time” to buy oil in what is a “volatile market”. Almost two-thirds of homes [62.5%] in Northern Ireland use oil for heating, the highest proportion of the *** nations. Fuel a ‘good chunk’ of monthly wage Tina Beggs can spend up to £150 a month on diesel At a busy petrol station in Lurgan in County Armagh, some of those filling their cars up with petrol or diesel said while the prices may be low, they are still too expensive for many. Tina Beggs said it is “ridiculous” that it costs almost £100 to fill up her two litre diesel car. “I work part time, so I do 20 hours a week which gives me about £1,000 a month and by the time I pay for my mortgage, you’re talking an extra £100 or £150 just on fuel,” she explained. “For somebody that works part time, like me, that is actually quite a good chunk of my wage,” she added, Michael Breen has noticed a difference in fuel prices at forecourts Michael Breen believes the price of fuel “could be lower again” and has noticed a big disparity in prices at filling stations. “You go to some petrol stations and there’s 10p a difference in diesel so there’s a bit of shopping around as well,” he said. “It fluctuates all the time and it’ll probably go up again. Through the winter the fuel goes through the roof and in the summer it drops again. That’s the nature of it really.” Tanya Preshur has switched to a petrol car to save on fuel costs Tanya Preshur has recently switched from diesel to a petrol car and she said while prices “could be lower”, she’s spending around £40 less a week on fuel. “I use the car for school runs and running here and there with children,” she said. “Prices went sky high. I think it’s the smaller runs. You’re using a lot more [fuel] because you’re running back and forth all the time. “I put about £40 to £50 pound a week in the car now as before it was maybe £80 a week.” Litre of milk cost ‘more concerning’ Dominic Thornton said he is concerned over the cost of home heating oil and food Meanwhile, Dominic Thornton, who works close to his Lurgan home, said he was more concerned about home heating oil and food prices. “We’re maybe more worried about the cost of heating oil because we’re moving from a small house to a slightly ******* house so we’re worried about how much that’s going to cost to heat, along with the rising costs of everything else on top of that,” he said. “I wouldn’t be pulling at the pump and looking at the price of a litre of fuel, I’d be more concerned about the price of a litre of milk.” Trump tariffs CCNI’s Raymond Gormley said the current low prices for fuel and home heating oil was due to several factors, including US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and crude oil producers producing more oil. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which is an alliance of the top crude oil producers in the world, announced last month they were going to ramp up oil production by 400,000 barrels per day. “So you take the impact on the world economies that Trump had and that overproduction, it has meant demand is low, supply is high and prices have come down,” said Mr Gormley. Consumer Council NI CCNI’s Raymond Gormley said home heating oil tends to be cheaper in the summer months How much is home heating oil and fuel? A really volatile market Mr Gormley has advised consumers to buy home heating oil if they are able to do so as it is “good value for money”. “That’s not to say it will go down again next week but equally, it could go up again next week,” he said. “It’s a really volatile market. “In the summer time you have 100 different things you want to be spending your money on and the last thing you want to do is be thinking ahead and going, ‘I have a few spare pound, oil is cheap, I could buy now for the off-season’. “It’s normally cheaper in the summer time than it is in the winter time because supply and demand – colder weather, demand is higher and the price goes up.” Tips for finding the cheapest oil Mr Gormley said it’s important to buy oil in bulk as the smaller order you place, the more you pay per litre. CCNI’s weekly oil price checker allows you to see average prices for 300, 500 and 900 litres of oil which gives consumers an idea of how much they should be spending before pricing local suppliers. For those who do not have a lump sum available to order oil, Mr Gormley suggested joining an oil buying club where communities come together to buy oil in bulk and, hopefully, make a saving. The NI Oil Federation also offers a pre-payment scheme, while oil fuel stamps allows residents to budget and spread the cost by purchasing stamps from local retailers and using them to pay for their oil delivery. Attenborough Ocean film ‘greatest message he’s ever told’
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Attenborough Ocean film ‘greatest message he’s ever told’ Attenborough Ocean film ‘greatest message he’s ever told’ Sir David Attenborough is launching what he says is one of the most important films of his career as he enters his hundredth year. He believes his new, cinema-length film Ocean could play a decisive role in saving biodiversity and protecting the planet from climate change. Sir David, who will be 99 on Thursday, says: “After almost 100 years on the planet, I now understand the most important place on land is not on Earth but at sea.” The ocean is the planet’s support system and humanity’s greatest ally against climate catastrophe, the film argues. It shows how the world’s oceans are at a crossroads. A blue carpet will be rolled out at the film’s premiere tonight at the Royal Festival Hall. A host of celebrities are expected to attend including Chris Martin and Coldplay, Benedict Cumberbatch, astronaut Tim Peake, Geri Halliwell-Horner and Simon LeBon. Toby Nowlan, who produced Ocean, says this new production is not a typical Attenborough film. “This is not about seeing brand new natural history behaviours. It is the greatest message he’s ever told,” he says. The film documents how the state of the world’s oceans and our understanding of how they function have changed in the course of Sir David’s lifetime. BBC Studios Sir David during his first scuba dive in Australia in 1957 Sir David remembers his first scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef way back in 1957: “I was so taken aback by the spectacle before me I forgot – momentarily – to breathe.” Since then, there has been a catastrophic decline in life in the world’s oceans. “We are almost out of time,” he warns. Ocean contains some of the most graphic footage of the damage that bottom trawling – a common fishing practice around the world – can do to the seabed. It is a vivid example of how industrial fishing can drain the life from the world’s oceans, Sir David claims. The new footage shows how the chain that the trawlers drag behind them scours the seafloor, forcing the creatures it disturbs into the net behind. The trawlers are often after a single species: more than three-quarters of what they catch may be discarded. “It’s hard to imagine a more wasteful way to catch fish,” comments Sir David. The process also releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide which contributes to the warming of our planet, yet bottom trawling is not just legal but is actively encouraged by many governments. Sir David says the state of the ocean has almost made him lose hope for the future of life on the planet. What has kept him from despair is what he calls the “most remarkable discovery of all” – that the ocean can “recover faster than we had ever imagined”. Sir David says the story of the world’s whales has been a source of huge optimism for him. It is estimated that 2.9 million whales were killed by the whaling industry in the 20th Century alone. Scientists have said it is the largest cull of any animal in history when measured in terms of total biomass. It pushed almost all whale species to the edge of extinction. Just one per cent of Blue Whales were left, recalls Sir David: “I remember thinking that was it. There was no coming back, we had lost the great whales.” But in 1986 lawmakers bowed to public pressure and banned commercial whaling worldwide. The whale population has rapidly recovered since then. One of the film’s directors, Keith Scholey, has worked with Sir David for 44 years. “When I first met David, I was in shorts,” he jokes. That was in 1981, two years after Sir David had resigned as the BBC’s director of programmes – one of the most senior jobs at the Corporation. “He’d done one career, and he was off on his next.” Despite now nearing his 99th birthday Sir David is still remarkably energetic, says Scholey. “Every time you work with David, you learn something new,” he says. “It’s really good fun. But also, David keeps you on your mettle, because he is so on his mettle and so, you know, it’s always a very creative process.” Silverback and Open Planet Studios Dolphins swimming over a coral reef Sir David’s key message in the Ocean film is that all is not lost. Countries have promised to protect a third of the world’s oceans. He hopes his new film will spur leaders to take firm action on this promise at a UN conference next month. He believes that could be transformational. “The ocean can bounce back to life,” Sir David says. “If left alone it may not just recover but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen.” A healthier ocean ecosystem would also be able to trap more carbon dioxide, helping protect the world from climate change, according to scientists. “In front of us is a chance to protect our climate, our food, our home,” Sir David says. As he celebrates his 99th birthday this week he is still fighting to protect the natural world he has worked his lifetime to show to us in all its glory. Ocean will be in cinemas across the country from Thursday. Source link #Attenborough #Ocean #film #greatest #message #hes #told Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
Trump administration urges judge to toss states’ lawsuit over access to abortion pill mifepristone Trump administration urges judge to toss states’ lawsuit over access to abortion pill mifepristone Washington — The Trump administration on Monday urged a federal district court to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s actions expanding access to the widely used abortion pill mifepristone. Justice Department lawyers wrote in a filing with the U.S. district court in Amarillo, Texas, that the three states pursuing the lawsuit — Missouri, Idaho and Kansas — should not be able to do so in that court. The administration is pursuing a request initially made by the Biden administration last year in the closely watched challenge to mifepristone, a drug used to terminate an early pregnancy, that has been playing out before U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk. “At bottom, the states cannot keep alive a lawsuit in which the original plaintiffs were held to lack standing, those plaintiffs have now voluntarily dismissed their claims, and the states’ own claims have no connection to this district,” Trump administration lawyers wrote. “The states are free to pursue their claims in a district where venue is proper, but the states’ claims before this court must be dismissed or transferred pursuant to the venue statute’s mandatory command.” The legal battle over mifepristone was initially filed by a group of anti-abortion rights doctors and medical associations in November 2022. The coalition sought to roll back a series of changes made by the FDA that relaxed the rules for the drug’s use. But the Supreme Court last year rejected that challenge and unanimously ruled that the plaintiffs did not have the legal right to sue, a concept known as legal standing. But attorneys general for Missouri, Idaho and Kansas, who had intervened at an earlier stage in the litigation, sought to continue the lawsuit. They argued that changes made by the FDA beginning in 2016 were unlawful. Among those efforts were allowing mifepristone to be taken up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy, rather than seven weeks, expanding the health care providers who can prescribe the drug and allowing the medication to be dispensed through the mail. The Justice Department said in its filing to Kacsmaryk, who was appointed by President Trump during his first term, that the states’ claims “have no connection” to the Northern District of Texas, where the case was filed, and that even if they were to file their own lawsuit there, it could not move forward because it is not the proper venue. “Regardless of the merits of the states’ claims, the states cannot proceed in this court,” administration lawyers said. “The states’ amended complaint should be dismissed or transferred for lack of venue.” The Justice Department also said the states do not have the legal standing to sue and waited too long to challenge the FDA’s 2016 actions, which are subject to a six-year statute of limitations. The FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000 and has issued a series of changes in the years since that have made the drug more widely available. Medication abortions made up more than half of all abortions in the United States health care system in 2023, according to a study from the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights research group. Twenty-eight states restrict access to mifepristone, according to the organization, four of which prohibit the mailing of abortion pills to patients. The filing from the Trump administration is the first in which it has expressed a position on the challenge involving mifepristone. After Mr. Trump won a second term in office, conservatives urged his administration to force the FDA to roll back its earlier moves that made mifepristone easier to obtain. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told senators during his confirmation hearing earlier this year that Mr. Trump had asked him to study the safety of mifepristone. Kennedy, whose agency oversees the FDA, said that while the president had not taken a stand on how to regulate the abortion pill, he would implement the president’s policies. The president said in June 2024 that he had “strong views” on mifepristone and pledged to release a policy position on access to the drug, but did not do so. How The Last Of Us Episode 4’s Iconic Ellie-Dina Scene Came Together How The Last Of Us Episode 4’s Iconic Ellie-Dina Scene Came Together One of the most iconic scenes in The Last of Us Part 2 is where Ellie does an impromptu concert for Dina playing A-ha’s 1980s “Take On Me.” When planning out Season 2, showrunner Craig Mazin knew he was going to include that moment, but also wanted to make sure he did it right. With Episode 4, fans got to see the scene recreated with Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced in their respective roles. Talking on Sony’s Creator to Creator, Mazin, Ramsey, and Merced, along with co-stars Gabriela Luna and Young Mazino, talked about the early days of production and casting, but also trying to be as game-accurate as possible for the most important scenes. “I was hoping the music shop scene would be included,” said Merced. “That was really special to me and left a mark on me.” Mazin confirmed that it was Ramsey playing and singing the song themselves: “Bella did all this tremendous work because they’re very good at playing guitar and singing while playing guitar…I play guitar, but I’m not that good. So you had a lot of time practicing. They show up, and crush it, but you sort of go ‘now you have to be not too good.’ You have to fall into real, especially with that first part where Ellie’s just playing to herself until Dina comes in.” Luna talked about playing that part of the game, where you have to utilize the controller’s touchpad and strum to match the cords to activate the scene. He also said that he played a few of his songs using the touchpad and wondered if Ramsey had as well, since they also write their own music. “Talking about that scene though, I remember getting to see you react was so beautiful,” Ramsey said to Merced. “I remember where your emotions were so close to the surface that day. I remember it was so beautiful to watch your reaction to it when I wasn’t on camera…that was a really special day.” Merced agreed, saying, “I think you have an old man’s soul, and when you have an old soul, even though they’re young, when you sing, it sometimes comes out. I feel like your voice was piercing my heart. And it was much harder not to cry in that moment.” New episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays at at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max. Perplexity AI’s Comet browser will streak across the web this month Perplexity AI’s Comet browser will streak across the web this month Perplexity AI’s new WhatsApp integration offers instant fact-checking without leaving the app Perplexity responds with fast, sourced explanations in over 20 languages The feature aims to help navigate misleading posts in private group threads Web browser battles are getting an AI makeover, and Perplexity is sending a Comet to the fight. The AI-fueled web browser is set to launch this month, as first spotted by Testing Catalog. Hints about the AI search engine developer’s plan for a browser have been seen here and there in recent weeks, including a a new homepage, separate from Perplexity’s main website, a Learn Comet button on some people’s Perplexity web interface, and even a briefly viewable promotional video that Perplexity soon took down. Based on the drip of information, it looks like Perplexity is pitching Comet as a Google Chrome alternative that can aid in any research you need done online. Comet will apparently integrate with Google services, as well as access your history and follow along with your browsing to respond in context to your requests. So, you might ask Comet to “find that thing I was looking at about sea otters last Tuesday,” and it will dig up the article about how they hold hands to keep from losing each other. No more keyword-guessing or digging through all of your open tabs like an archaeologist of your own disorganized mind. You may like The eye on taking Chrome’s crown isn’t hyperbole, either. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has already boasted about how Comet will beat Chrome when it comes to reopening old tabs, declaring that “Chrome is on its way out.” On Comet, you can simply ask in English what you want it to reopen specifically. No need to remember fancy shortcuts. Chrome is on its way out. [Hidden Content] 30, 2025 Comet AI Perplexity is attempting to get ahead of the biggest obvious concern some might have about Comet, namely, privacy. The idea of a browser that reads what you’re looking at and remembers what you did last week might sound convenient to some, but like dystopian surveillance to others. Comet will have privacy settings, including native ad-blocking, and an opt-out for data sharing. Meanwhile, the competition isn’t standing still. Microsoft is stuffing increasingly bold AI features into Edge, and of course, Google Chrome is expected to unveil many new AI integrations at Google I/O this year. Comet will need to make its AI assistance feel intuitive to stand out. If Comet’s AI can help you stay focused, organized, and smart about navigating the chaos of the internet, it could entice a lot of new users. If not, it risks being seen as more of an unhelpful Chrome extension. Perplexity needs to get past people asking if they really need another browser, and promise to resolve your frustrations with your current one. Newark air traffic controllers briefly lost contact with planes, union says Newark air traffic controllers briefly lost contact with planes, union says Air traffic controllers at Newark Liberty International Airport briefly lost communications with planes under their control, “unable to see, hear, or talk to them” last week, a union spokesman has said. The 28 April incident led to multiple employees being placed on trauma leave, resulting in hundreds of delayed or diverted flights. More than 150 flights have been cancelled so far on Monday alone, according to tracking website FlightAware. The airport, one of New York’s busiest hubs, has been grappling with staff shortages for more than a week. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged in a statement that “our antiquated air traffic control system is affecting our work force”. Confirming the controllers had taken leave following the incident, the FAA said it could “not quickly replace them”. “We continue to train controllers who will eventually be assigned to this busy airspace,” the statement said. Air traffic control operations at the airport have come under sustained criticism recently. Last week, United Airlines announced it was cancelling 35 flights per day from its Newark schedule because the airport “cannot handle the number of planes that are scheduled to operate there”. “In the past few days, on more than one occasion, technology that FAA air traffic controllers rely on to manage the airplanes coming in and out of Newark airport failed – resulting in dozens of diverted flights, hundreds of delayed and cancelled flights,” United CEO Scott Kirby said. He also said the issues were “compounded” because over 20% of FAA controllers “walked off the job”. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association said the employees took leave under provisions for workers that experience a traumatic event at work. The union would not say how many controllers had taken leave, or how long they lost contact with planes for. The Newark incident comes as the US Department of Transport last week unveiled a package designed to boost the numbers of FAA air traffic controllers. “The package will allow more of the best and brightest candidates to get into air traffic facilities and on the job faster, as well as increase retention of experienced controllers,” the FAA said. The transport department said it was on track to hire at least 2,000 controllers this year. In February, the Trump administration began firing hundreds of FAA employees, weeks after a fatal mid-air plane collision in Washington DC. The agency said it would continue to hire and onboard air traffic controllers and safety professionals. Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon Just Delivered Incredible News for Nvidia Stock Investors Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon Just Delivered Incredible News for Nvidia Stock Investors Nvidia sells the most powerful data center chips for developing artificial intelligence (AI) models. Concerns have swirled about declining demand for these chips as President Trump’s tariffs sow uncertainty throughout the economy. Some of Nvidia’s top customers just delivered a welcome update on their data center spending plans for 2025. Like much of the stock market, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has experienced significant volatility in 2025. Even after recovering some of its losses, the stock remains down 15% year to date. Investors are concerned that President Donald Trump’s tariffs could reduce demand for the company’s data center chips, which are the best in the industry for developing artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Although semiconductors are exempt from the most aggressive tariff policies, many of Nvidia’s customers still face increased costs and potential sales declines, which could force them to reduce their capital expenditures (capex). Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL), and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) are four of the biggest buyers of Nvidia’s AI chips, and they just gave Nvidia investors a positive update on their planned AI spending for this year. Image source: Nvidia. Nvidia’s H100 graphics processing unit (GPU) was the industry’s dominant AI data center chip throughout 2023 and for most of 2024. It was based on the company’s Hopper architecture, which has been superseded by the higher-performing Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra architectures. In fact, the new Blackwell Ultra GB300 GPU can perform AI inference up to 50 times faster than the H100 in specific configurations, which is important for developers of next-generation “reasoning” models. Traditional large language models (LLMs) deliver one-shot responses, providing users with fast and convenient access to information, but they often make mistakes. Reasoning models spend more time “thinking” in the background to clear up as many errors as possible before generating a response. This means they make better use of the data they already have, which reduces pre-training workloads (endlessly feeding more data into models to make them “smarter”). But since reasoning models use up more tokens (words, symbols, and punctuation) during the thinking process and are slower to generate responses, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says they need up to 100 times more computing power than traditional models to maintain a convenient user experience. Blackwell Ultra chips (which will ship to customers in the second half of 2025) are a step in the right direction, but developers are already eyeing Nvidia’s next-generation Rubin GPUs, which are expected to deliver a further 3.3 times more compute performance. Rubin GPUs will pave the way for the most powerful reasoning models to date, and they are slated for release in 2026. Simply put, Nvidia is investing heavily in innovation to continue driving the AI industry industry forward for the long term, which is why investors are so anxious for proof that demand is holding up. Nvidia is an American company, but the majority of its chips are fabricated offshore by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, so they are technically imported products. However, Trump exempted semiconductors from his “Liberation Day” tariffs on imports, as he understands the importance of keeping the U.S. at the forefront of AI technology. The ******* concern is the effect of tariffs on Nvidia’s customers. They are spending tens of billions of dollars per year on AI chips and data center infrastructure, so any slowdown in their core operations could force them to pull back. Tariffs apply to physical goods, so a company like Amazon will take a hit because it draws part of its revenue from its e-commerce platform, which imports retail products from other countries. However, Amazon’s cloud services platform, digital advertising business, and streaming segment aren’t directly subjected to tariffs because they offer digital products and services. Other Nvidia customers like Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet also primarily sell digital products and services, so they could weather the global trade tensions better than most companies. As a result, they each delivered reassuring news for Nvidia investors when they reported their financial results for the first quarter (ended March 31): Meta raised its 2025 capex forecast range to $64 billion to $72 billion (from $60 billion to $65 billion previously). Microsoft held its capex forecast steady, so it’s on track to spend around $80 billion during its fiscal 2025 (ending June 30). Alphabet didn’t change its capex forecast with $75 billion in spending planned for 2025. Amazon also left its capex forecast unchanged, so it’s still likely to spend around $105 billion this year. The dip in Nvidia stock has created a fantastic buying opportunity for investors too. The stock currently trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 39, which is a significant discount to its 10-year average and median, both of which are above 50. Data by YCharts. Nvidia generated $115.2 billion in data center revenue during its fiscal 2025 (ended Jan. 26), which was an eye-popping 142% increase from the prior year. But Huang predicts that data center spending will top $1 trillion annually by 2028 as reasoning models demand even more computing power, so the company still has a long potential growth runway. Data center operators like Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon typically plan their infrastructure spending years in advance, even if they only offer guidance for the coming 12 months. Therefore, they might be willing to look past any short-term slowdown in the economy from the tariffs and global trade tensions. That’s likely why they haven’t reduced their capex forecasts. Plus, demand for Nvidia’s chips is outstripping supply, so companies can’t afford to cancel orders because they would risk falling behind in the AI race. As a result, Nvidia stock looks like a great buy at the current price, especially for investors who are willing to stay the course until 2028 and beyond. Mattel pulls annual forecasts, will hike prices as tariffs raise costs Mattel pulls annual forecasts, will hike prices as tariffs raise costs Mattel Inc. Barbie brand dolls for ***** in the Toys “R” Us section of the Macy’s flagship store on ****** Friday in New York, US, on Friday, Nov. 25, 2022. Jeenah Moon | Bloomberg | Getty Images Barbie-parent Mattel withdrew its annual financial targets on Monday and said it would increase prices for some products in the U.S. to counter higher input costs due to the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs on key trading partners. Shares of the toymaker were down about 2% in extended trading. They have fallen about 8% so far this year. “Given the volatile macroeconomic environment and evolving U.S. tariff landscape, it is difficult to predict consumer spending and Mattel’s U.S. sales in the remainder of the year and holiday season,” the toymaker said. In ****-for-tat tariffs between the U.S. and China, the world’s two biggest economies have hiked levies on each other’s goods to more than 100% since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year, escalating a trade war that has disrupted global supply chains. “There’s no question that the tariffs are creating disruption in the industry. Many companies have stopped production and shipping to the U.S. as a result of tariffs from China. We do support the Toy Association’s advocacy for zero tariffs on toys,” Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz told Reuters in an interview. The U.S. represents about half of Mattel’s global toy sales, and the company imports about 20% of its goods sold in the country from China. The company said it would also cut promotions and discounts to save costs. It increased its costs-savings target for the year to $80 million from $60 million. Apart from China, Mattel imports products such as Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels toys from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, which were also hit by reciprocal tariffs from the Trump administration in early April before being paused for 90 days. The company had earlier targeted 2025 adjusted earnings per share between $1.66 and $1.72 and annual net sales growth of 2% to 3%. In contrast, peer Hasbro, which sources about half of its toys and games sold in the U.S. from China, maintained its annual forecasts in April, helped by strength in its gaming segment. Mattel reported first-quarter net sales of $827 million, beating analysts’ average estimate of $786 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. It reported an adjusted loss per share of 3 cents, compared with the estimate of a 10-cent loss. Mattel bought back shares worth $160 million in the quarter ended March 31 and maintained its $600 million repurchase target for 2025. Brazilian judge orders arrest of man over alleged plot targeting Lady Gaga concert in Rio Brazilian judge orders arrest of man over alleged plot targeting Lady Gaga concert in Rio RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian judge on Monday ordered the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in an alleged plot to place explosives at a concert by singer Lady Gaga in Rio de Janeiro. Judge Fabiana Pagel of the Rio Grande do Sul state court did not name the suspect in her ruling, but said he is a man investigated by Rio de Janeiro police as the alleged mastermind of the plot. Police in Rio Grande do Sul state, which borders Argentina and Uruguay, said Sunday they had released a man under investigation for the alleged plot after he paid his bail. Brazilian media reported that is the same man jailed on Monday by Judge Pagel. Rio police did not reveal names of either of its two suspects or show images of the explosives that the alleged plotters intended to use. Felipe Cury, secretary of the Rio police, said authorities believed the suspects sought to target Brazil’s LGBTQ community. The Rio event on Saturday was the biggest show of the pop star’s career, attracting an estimated 2.5 million fans to Copacabana Beach. Security was tight at Saturday’s concert, with 5,200 military and police officers deployed to the beach where fans were reveling. CFTC drops Kalshi election bet case appeal CFTC drops Kalshi election bet case appeal The Kalshi app arranged on a smartphone in New York, US, on Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. Gabby Jones | Bloomberg | Getty Images The Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Monday moved to drop its appeal of a federal judge’s ruling that had allowed commodities exchange KalshiEx to take bets on the outcome of U.S. political elections. The CFTC, in a filing at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, said its proposed dismissal was voluntary and on terms agreed to with Kalshi. The agreement calls for both sides to bear their own costs and attorney fees, and for Kalshi to waive all legal claims arising from litigation in the case. CNBC has requested comment on the motion from the CFTC and Kalshi. Kalshi in January named Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President Donald Trump, as a strategic advisor to the firm. The CFTC for months had pursued its appeal of a September ruling by Washington, D.C., federal district court Judge Jia Cobb. Cobb, ruling in Kalshi’s favor, said Congress had not authorized the CFTC to conduct a public interest review that led the agency to bar the exchange from offering so-called events contracts on elections. The appeals court issued a freeze on Cobb’s order about eight hours after it was issued. But weeks later, the appeals court lifted that freeze, clearing the way for Kalshi to accept bets on election outcomes as the CFTC continued its effort to have Cobb’s ruling overturned. On Monday, the financial reform advocacy group Better Markets blasted the CFTC’s decision to drop the appeal, calling it “a stark betrayal of the public interest.” “The CFTC has just voluntarily surrendered its fight to overturn a dangerous lower court decision that allows gambling on the outcome of congressional elections,” said Stephen Hall, Better Markets’ legal director and securities specialist.” “That decision was bad law and even worse policy, as it threatens the integrity of our federal elections, promises a new wave of market manipulation and investor losses, and casts the CFTC in the role of election supervisor, something the small agency lacks the resources or expertise to do,” Hall said. “Moreover, with this dismissal, the lower court decision will remain intact, setting a terrible and enduring legal precedent. This about-face, without any hint of a justification and after the case was fully briefed and argued by both sides, is an ominous setback for all Americans.” This is breaking news. Wildfire destroys 12,500 acres of land on Dartmoor Wildfire destroys 12,500 acres of land on Dartmoor Zhara Simpson BBC News, South West Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire, which started on Sunday, was still being investigated A large wildfire on Dartmoor that started on Sunday afternoon has destroyed about 12,500 acres (50 sq km) of land. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said at its peak the blaze stretched across an area 3km (1.9 miles) by 1.4km (0.9 miles) and crews from 13 stations were deployed to the Dartmoor Forest area near Cut Hill. Wildlife support officers and a police helicopter were also deployed, which confirmed there were no concerns about injuries or missing people. In an update at 17:00 BST on Monday the fire service confirmed the fire was out. More appliances were mobilised to provide further relief on Monday morning A drone team and two all-terrain vehicles were used to check for any hot spots after the fire service said “all fire fronts were extinguished” on Monday afternoon. It said Dartmoor Rangers would revisit the site on Tuesday. The fire service said: “Crews were assisted by Dartmoor rangers and commoners using firefighting equipment. “Crews used five Argo Cat vehicles, fogging units, leaf blowers and a drone for environmental protection.” The BBC understands the fire service are still investigating the cause of the fire. Earlier it had asked people to avoid the area and advised anyone whose property was affected by the smoke to close their windows. At about 10:45 BST, a spokesperson for the fire service asked people to avoid the Merrivale and the Okehampton range areas. There were 10 appliances at the scene, most of which were “special fire appliances for moorland firefighting”, the spokesperson said. ‘Always challenging’ The service’s Devon area manager, Simon Young, said: “Wildfires are always challenging because they are inaccessible for our appliances to go onto our moorland.” “It makes it very difficult, but we have specialist vehicles to make sure we have capability to get onto the moor and make sure we can do the job as safely as possible. “The wind has really played its part and we are currently under amber wildfire conditions nationally for the next three to four days. “We know the conditions are very dry under foot and with the wind it has just exacerbated it.” Simon Lee said there was “significant damage” to the moorland Head Ranger at Dartmoor National Park Simon Lee said there was “significant damage” and there was concern around wildlife and the fabric of the moor. He said with it being a Bank Holiday weekend, they are advising people to leave this section of the moor alone, and not be tempted to “have a look”. “Let us and the emergency services do their work and not to light BBQs or fires while Dartmoor is vulnerable due to the ongoing dry weather,” said Mr Lee. The fire started at about 14:30 on Sunday and has been “burning all night”, he said. The majority of the firefighting appliances in use on Monday were specialist moorland firefighting vehicles He said they were unable to get four-wheeled vehicles to access the fire, and they had used quadbikes and argocats, but even then, it was “quite a struggle”. Mr Lee said a police helicopter on Sunday evening advised people camping and visiting to “move on”. Devon and Cornwall Police warned people travelling in the area to be aware of increased levels of smoke and the risk of reduced visibility on the road. Draw puts pressure on Nottingham Forest’s Europe bid Draw puts pressure on Nottingham Forest’s Europe bid Nottingham Forest have fought out a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League, a result that put a big dent in the side’s Champions League hopes. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have spent most of the year in the league top three, but a run of one win in four games has dropped them behind Chelsea, Newcastle and a resurgent Manchester City. A win at Selhurst Park on Monday (Tuesday AEST) would have brought them equal with Chelsea and Newcastle, but one point means they stay in sixth place, with the top five qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Neither team was able to take control of a sometimes scrappy match, in which eight names went into the referee’s book. Palace took the lead with a penalty kick after an hour. After a video review, Matz Sels was adjudged to have felled Tyrick Mitchell, and Eberechi Eze made no mistake from the spot. Forest bounced right back within four minutes, Murillo doing enough to deflect a goal-bound shot from Neco Williams away from the keeper. Eze hitting the woodwork in the dying seconds and Eddie Nketiah having a goal disallowed for offside in stoppage time meant FA Cup finalists Palace have not won any of their past five league games. “We were unlucky in a few situations, hitting the post, the offside call, but they fought, and many situations we created,” Palace coach Oliver Glasner said. “It’s not easy against a team like Forest, so overall I’m really pleased with the performance today.” Source link #Draw #puts #pressure #Nottingham #Forests #Europe #bid Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
