Trump administration may soon deport migrants to Libya, U.S. officials say
The Trump administration may soon start deporting migrants to Libya, expanding its mass deportation campaign to the troubled North African country, two U.S. officials told CBS News Tuesday.
The deportations, expected to be operated by the U.S. military, could start as early as this week, the officials said, requesting anonymity to discuss internal government plans.
Libya is one of several far-flung nations the U.S. government has been asking to accept deportations of migrants from third countries, CBS News reported earlier this week.
The possibility of U.S. deportations to Libya, reported earlier Tuesday by Reuters, is a stunning proposition given the deep political and social turmoil the North African country finds itself in, as well as its human rights record.
Since a civil war erupted in 2011, Libya has been plagued by armed conflict and political tumult. The country, itself a corridor for desperate migrants hoping to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea, is divided into two factions. The western part of the country is overseen by a United Nations-backed government in Tripoli, while the east is controlled by a strongman.
The State Department has a Level 4 travel advisory for Libya, warning Americans not to travel there because of “crime, terrorism, unexploded landmines, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.”

Libya has also gained infamy over its treatment of migrants seeking to reach Europe, with both advocates and U.S. officials finding that detainees in the North African country face brutal conditions, due process violations and even torture in immigration detention centers.
It’s unclear who exactly would be deported to Libya under the plans being considered by the Trump administration and whether they would be detained by authorities there upon arrival.
As part of its aggressive efforts to deter migrants from entering or staying in the U.S. illegally, the Trump administration has mounted an intense diplomatic campaign to forge deportations agreements that allow the U.S. to send migrants to countries that are not their own.
It has already persuaded several Latin America countries to accept third country nationals, sending Asian and African migrants to Costa Rica and Panama, as well as a group of Venezuelan men accused of gang membership to El Salvador, which transferred them to a notorious mega prison.
But the Trump administration has also sought to broker deportation agreements with countries in other continents, including Africa and Europe.
The other countries U.S. officials have approached for potential third country deportation arrangements include Angola, Benin, Eswatini, Moldova and Rwanda, according to internal U.S. government documents and officials.
It’s unclear whether any of those countries will finalize agreements with the U.S. After CBS News identified Angola as one of the countries the U.S. had approached, its embassy in Washington said the West African country would not accept deportees from third countries.

‘Chaos, gridlock and hours of waiting’
‘Chaos, gridlock and hours of waiting’
They wanted to give these tourists “the Boot.”
Thousands of tourists inundated a picturesque Italian town this past weekend, creating a “gridlock” that obstructed traffic and forced other sightseers to wait “hours” to get in, as seen in dramatic footage circulating on X.
The shocking scenes were recorded at Sirmione, a village of just over 8,000 residents that’s situated on the scenic shores of Lake Garda.
The town has become a popular sightseeing destination due to its Roman ruins, thermal baths and Scaligero Castle, a majestic 13th-century fortification seemingly ripped straight out of a fairytale, the Times Of London reported.
Tourists to Sirmione had to wait for up to 40 minutes to enter the gates to the town center. @mamboitaliano__/X
Unfortunately, this tranquil oasis turned into a mosh pit after a whopping 75,000 visitors descended on the waterfront hub over the May Day holiday weekend to visit the fortress, the Sun reported.
Alarming clips show throngs of travelers lining up at the gates and piling into Sirmione’s narrow passageways like the start of the Superbowl.
Residents’ cars and electric buses reportedly became snarled in the foot traffic while visitors had to wait 40 minutes to enter through the gates to reach Sirmione’s town center.
Locals were understandably displeased by the deluge.
“Overrun by tourists — chaos, gridlock, and hours of waiting,” said one on X recalling the chaotic spectacle. “A crisis that must be urgently addressed and regulated. It damages our heritage and turns the experience into a negative one.”

Another disillusioned poster lamented: “Overtourism is what happens when presence is confused with existence. Fast, loud, empty. Like fast fashion—disposable and harmful. Travel less, mean more.”
Marco Merlo, the president of the hotel and restaurant operators association, told the Times that he was “very worried about public safety and the quality of life for tourists, residents and workers.”
“We hope the council will involve us in finding effective and widely agreed strategies,” he declared.
“Overtourism is what happens when presence is confused with existence,” said one X poster while decrying the crowds. “Fast, loud, empty. Like fast fashion—disposable and harmful. Travel less, mean more.” @emanuelebertoli/X

Members of a local group, Siamo Sirmione (“We Are Sirmione”) also decried the swamping of their beloved city, which has long been a hub for famous historical figures from Sigmund Freud to James Joyce.
“If this is the council’s management model the risk is not just hardship for residents but a real and lasting harm for the tourism and image of Sirmione,” the group wrote.
Roberto Salaorni, the official responsible for transport, said they didn’t intend to mitigate the number of visitors entering the narrow bridge to access the castle, but admitted that the flow could’ve been managed better.
“This is the first thing to do, possibly installing a barrier at the entrance to the castle, which would enable us to manage exceptional situations such as we saw on Friday,” said the councilor.
However, he noted that he’d never “seen so many people” visiting Sirmione or the neighboring lake towns.
Indeed, Italy is one of many destinations in Europe that’s been overrun by the global tournami.
The situation has become so dire in Venice that local officials implemented policies to limit large tourist groups — but to little avail.
They followed this measure up in April by imposing a fee on day-trippers who “eat and flee,” a phrase officials use for tourists who pack their lunch, snap a selfie and depart without spending a dime.

Xi to begin Russia visit in show of support for Putin
Xi to begin Russia visit in show of support for Putin
******** President Xi Jinping is due to start a four-day visit to Russia, giving President Vladimir Putin an important diplomatic boost at a time when the Russian leader is keen to show his country is not isolated on the world stage.
Xi, whose country is locked in a tariff war with the United States, is expected to sign numerous agreements to deepen the already tight “no limits” strategic partnership with Moscow, which has consistently seen China crowned Russia’s biggest trading partner.
China buys more Russian oil and gas than any other country and has thrown Moscow an economic lifeline that has helped it navigate Western sanctions imposed over its war in Ukraine.
Despite recent efforts under US President Donald Trump to reset US-Russia ties, Putin is expected to present a united front with Xi against Washington, whose dominance and “exceptionalism” both countries have questioned, arguing for a more multipolar world instead.
“The upcoming visit of ******** President Xi Jinping to Russia is one of the central events in Russian-******** relations this year,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on the eve of the visit.
“The upcoming Russian-******** summit will send an important signal to the international community about the common approaches of Russia and China in defending the post-war world order,” she added.
Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg said in February that Washington would try to disrupt Russia’s close ties with countries like China. Days later, Xi and Putin reaffirmed their countries’ “no limits partnership”.
Xi, who has told Putin that the two have a chance to drive “changes the world has not seen in a century”, is due to hold talks with Putin on Thursday. He will join other world leaders on Moscow’s Red Square on Friday to watch a military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies over Nazi Germany.
The event, which will also feature ******** troops, comes at a time when Trump is trying to push Moscow and Kyiv to find a way to end the war in Ukraine with both sides so far blaming each other for a lack of progress.
But Xi, who has called for talks to end the conflict and has accused the US of stoking the war with weapons supplies to Kyiv, will be attending anyway, according to Beijing and the Kremlin.
Moscow and Beijing sealed their “no limits” strategic partnership days before Putin, who in recent months has described China as an ally, sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022.
Putin and Xi will discuss the “most sensitive” issues, including energy co-operation and the proposed but yet to be built Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline to China, Ushakov, a top Kremlin aide, said.
Putin is expected to visit China at the end of August or the start of September, the aide added.

Former Chicago alderman ID’d as man who draped coat over sleeping train passenger
Former Chicago alderman ID’d as man who draped coat over sleeping train passenger
CHICAGO (WGN) — A former alderman has caught social media praise after being identified as the man who reportedly draped his coat across a sleeping passenger aboard a Chicago Transit Authority L train last week.
The :09 video posted to TikTok last week shows a man seated on the train glancing at another passenger spread across a row of seats.
“This kid is likely homeless asleep on the train and this man took off what I’m guessing is a very nice expensive down jacket & laid it on him,” a caption on Maddie VanCuran’s Friday video said. “It was a good reminder for me that my ‘worst’ days are someone’s ‘best’ days. Just a reminder to be kind because it can go so much farther than we realize.”
Community of musicians turns young girl’s sketchbook and ******* journey into a song
Commenters were quick to ID the man as Edwin Eisendrath, the former alderman of the ward that includes Lincoln Park.
“I think this is edwin eisendrath, former alderman and professor at depaul. one of the most inspirational, intelligent and kind people ive met,” one commenter said.
“He is genuinely so kind and intelligent we would all be lucky to learn from him!!,” another user wrote.
Eisendrath previously also served as the CEO of the Chicago Sun-Times and taught a class on American Democracy at DePaul University.
“He taught a quarter long class at DePaul that absolutely changed the way that I look at myself and my role in the world,” a comment on the video reads. “This warms my heart to see.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, the video had nearly 2.5 million views and was approaching 2,000 comments.
Eisendrath joined the WGN Evening News on Tuesday to discuss the viral moment.
“I saw this young man sprawled across three very uncomfortable seats on the train. My heart went out to him,” Eisdendrath told WGN News anchors Ray Cortapassi and Jenna Barnes. “It was cold, his clothes didn’t fit, his shoes didn’t fit, and I just got up quickly, I took off my coat, I laid it over him, I took about a second-and-a-half, I thought I was done and then later in the day, I heard from some former students of mines, I sometimes teach at DePaul, and they said, ‘Did you know you’re on TikTok?’ I did not, and then I heard from others, and then I heard from everybody…my gosh, is social media amazing.”
‘Raise a glass’ with Robert Lee ******, Chicagoland’s first independent hot glass artist
Asked why the video resonated with so many people, Eisendrath said that homelessness remains a legitimate problem in Chicago and nationally, and viewers appreciated a ‘small act of empathy’ in a time where he believes cruelty is celebrated.
“I think people –they know we’re better than that, they want to see it, and they want to be part of it,” Eisendrath said.

Elon Musk may be headed for major legal trouble
Elon Musk may be headed for major legal trouble
After an extremely complicated April 2025, Elon Musk is still facing some significant problems ahead as the market enters a new month.
Since it reported extremely disappointing Q1 earnings, Tesla has had to grapple with the fact that it failed to meet even Wall Street’s scaled-back expectations. Even after Musk announced plans to spend more time at his company and less time on Capitol Hill, TSLA stock has been highly volatile.
Don’t miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet’s free daily newsletter
Meanwhile, Musk’s other companies have problems of their own. His artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI is reportedly in the process of raising $20 billion in a new funding round, but his other attempt to conquer the fast-growing market seems to be facing new obstacles.
For months, Musk has been locked in a legal battle with one of the industry’s hottest AI startups, maneuvering to stop a major transition it is planning. According to experts, he is facing a difficult road ahead.
Elon Musk’s lawsuit against another Silicon Valley leader may be heading in a surprising direction.Image source: Marc Piasecki/Getty Images
Over the past year, a new rivalry has come to dominate Silicon Valley, surpassing that of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, a dynamic that shaped the personal computing ***** of the 1980s. Musk has doubled down in his battle against OpenAI founder Sam Altman, someone with whom he once worked closely.
Related: Elon Musk gets more bad news from a new rival
An early investor in OpenAI, Musk also helped create and build the AI research organization, assisting in work that would lay the foundation for ChatGPT. However, he departed in 2018 over disagreements regarding its direction, sparking what would become a multi-year feud with Altman.
Last year, it reached a boiling point when Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman. In it, he claimed the startup’s attempts to transition from a nonprofit entity to a for-profit structure constituted both fraud and breach of contract, prompting him to seek a preliminary injunction to stop it.
In March 2024, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers denied Musk’s attempt to block the transition on the grounds that he lacked the “high burden required for a preliminary injunction.”
But now the case is moving forward quickly in the direction of a trial. It is currently scheduled for March 2026, though both parties may want to expedite the process.
According to legal experts, Musk’s chances of winning his case against OpenAI don’t seem high. Arthur Dermendjian, a pre-litigation managing attorney at J&Y Law, spoke to TheStreet about the pending legal showdown between two tech-sector titans.
Story Continues
Dermendjian describes Musk’s claims as being relatively weak, leading him to believe the case won’t go well for him.
“As a nonprofit, OpenAI did not issue shares or create shareholder contracts,” he states. “Unless Musk can produce a formal, written, and enforceable contract that explicitly prohibits OpenAI from creating a for-profit arm or limits its commercial activities, the case leans on informal understandings, mission statements, or general commitments, which U.S. courts are reluctant to enforce as binding contracts.”
More Elon Musk News:
He also notes that OpenAI is based in California, a state in which courts maintain high standards for “clarity and mutual assent in contract law.” Therefore, he sees Musk’s chances of winning a breach-of-contract case as being extremely slim, unless he can produce hard evidence of a contractual obligation on the startup’s part.
While Musk is an undeniably polarizing figure, particularly since he began working closely with U.S. President Donald Trump, he seems to be focused on ensuring that OpenAI continues developing technology that is most beneficial to humanity as a whole. His arguments allege that this won’t be possible if the startup transitions to a for-profit structure.
Related: Elon Musk reveals plans to do exactly what he’s been warned against
Now, as Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI moves forward, it seems that people who previously worked for Altman share his challenger’s vision. Twelve former OpenAI employees have come out in support of Musk’s lawsuit and asked to share their perspectives on the startup’s transformation.
This could potentially complicate the case for OpenAI, depending on what the former staffers share. However, Dermendjian maintains that ultimately, while OpenAI has gone in a direction that did not align with Musk’s initial vision for the public-benefit AI research organization, it does not mean the company will be found guilty.
“OpenAI’s later move to create a ‘capped-profit’ entity and sign a multi-billion-dollar deal with Microsoft diverges from that vision,” he states.
“But whether those expectations were legally enforceable is another matter. Expectations and disappointment alone, even from a co-founder, don’t necessarily translate into winning claims in court.”

Gorgeous dystopian fantasy adventure
A robust Crunchyroll Login feature package
Pre-register to score milestone goodies
Crunchyroll has officially opened pre-registration sign-ups for Mirren: Star Legends, letting you get first dibs on the fantasy RPG as soon as it launches this Spring. Crafted in partnership with A Plus Japan, this dystopian adventure has been a fan favourite in China (locally titled “Millennium Tour ELF”), and with sign-ups now open, you’ll get to experience its sprawling narrative too for a global audience.
What makes Mirren: Star Legends more notable to me is that it’s got a whole bunch of perks for Crunchyroll members – supposedly the “most robust” to date – which include daily rewards, free currencies, and even battle passes depending on your subscription.
This shiny new thing is called the Crunchyroll Login feature, and as you recruit and collect colourful characters and deploy them onto strategic combat on your quest to protect Mirren, you can buff up your team with extra goodies with your Novas and Asters of choice.
So, essentially, all you have to do is log in as a Crunchyroll member to grab the Crunchyroll Premium Battle Pass if you’re a Fan, Mega or Ultimate Fan tier holder. For Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan tiers, you get Crunchyroll Mega Fan Rewards, while all Crunchyroll users can score Crunchyroll Daily Login Rewards for free. And apparently, even if you’re still unsure, you can give the Free Trial sign-up a go and nab Crunchyroll Sign-In Rewards just for trying.
In any case, it’s worth pre-registering just to hit those milestone rewards too. As the new Lord Oracle, you’ll need all the perks you can get to dominate the RPG’s strategic turn-based combat, after all.
In the meantime, if you’re on the hunt for something similar while you wait for the official launch, why not take a look at our list of the best RPGs on Android to get your fill?

Arrest made for driver accused of ‘intentionally’ hitting Hwy 26 motorcyclist
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A video of a blue Kia driver appearing to “intentionally” sideswipe a motorcyclist early Monday morning led to an outpouring of tips from the public and an arrest Monday evening, according to Beaverton police.
The hit-and-run happened around 6:15 a.m. on Hwy 26 between Hwy 217 and Cedar Hills Boulevard. The Kia driver then sped off down the highway, as seen on dashcam footage, and police kicked off a public search.
Elephant seal pup stabbed multiple times on Oregon beach
Authorities have identified the driver as Samir Helio Pazzoto-Filho. Court records show he faces charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.

The motorcyclist, a young man in his 20s, slid 250 feet on his stomach — his clothing shredded by the road. The gear shifter pierced his steel-toe boot and his helmet split from the impact of the ******.
“There’s no steel toe left,” said his mother, Patsy, who asked to not use her last name. “There is a crack through it but the helmet saved his life.”
But the video only tells part of the story. Patsy said the driver tried to run her son off the road several times as he rode to work before the motorcycle and Kia came into view of the dashcam.

She added that her son had flipped off the Kia driver immediately before being slammed into and pushed off the road.

“The fact that somebody deliberately turned into my son and rammed him off the road is what makes me sick to my stomach,” Patsy told KOIN 6 News. “His actions could’ve killed my son.”
Officials say there may be other victims tied to Pazzoto-Filho.
“It is important to note that his vehicle had Florida license plates,” according to PPB. “If anyone else saw him driving recklessly during this incident or any other, we want to know about it.”

CNBC’s The China Connection newsletter: Tourism surge defies slowdown
Tourists visit Pingyao Ancient City on the second day of the May labor day holiday on May 2, 2025 in Jinzhong, Shanxi province of China.

This report is from this week’s edition of CNBC’s The China Connection newsletter, which brings you insights and analysis on what’s driving the world’s second-largest economy. Each week, we’ll explore the biggest business stories in China, give a lowdown on market moves and help you set up for the week ahead. Like what you see? You can subscribe here.
The big story
If people are spending in China, it’s likely to be on travel — and businesses want a slice of that.
After 10 years as the only hostel in China’s Datong city, Fly by Knight suddenly gained six new competitors in one year, according to founder Daniel Huang. He said his 26-room venue was booked out for the May Labor Day holiday, which officially ran from Thursday to Monday.
“Hotels are opening everywhere in Datong,” he said, noting that one no-brand operator raised its prices for the holiday by more than five times to over 1,000 yuan ($140) a night.
Surging interest in history and culture is helping. The popularity of Datong’s Yungang Buddhist grottoes — a Unesco heritage site from around 1,500 years ago — skyrocketed after its statues were featured in the hit video game ****** Myth: Wukong released last summer.
More than 43,700 people visited the caves on May 1 alone, up over 10% from a year earlier, according to state media. The Grand Canyon averaged 13,477 visitors a day last year.
The latest holiday shows young ******** tourists remain very interested in museums and other cultural activities, said Ashley Dudarenok, founder of ChoZan, a China marketing consultancy.
“What it means for international brands or local brands is that collaborating with those cultural icons is still a very, very important part of connecting with the consumer,” she said.
Nationwide, China reported 314 million domestic tourist trips over the May Labor Day holiday, continuing the steady increase in recent years and well above the pre-Covid level of 195 million in 2019. The government has extended the holiday in recent years, giving locals more time off as businesses typically offer employees only a handful of paid vacation days.

China’s recently built transportation infrastructure is encouraging locals to visit smaller cities such as Datong, Huang said. He pointed out that before the Covid-19 pandemic, travelers had to take a six-hour train from the capital city of Beijing to Datong.
Now, a high-speed train between the cities (about $20 per one-way ticket) takes less than two hours, with dozens of departure times throughout the day. The train route opened in December 2019.
Tourists in China have been turning to less popular, more remote destinations that tend to be cheaper than visiting large cities. During the latest May Labor Day holidays, trips to rural areas rose by nearly 20% from a year ago, with interest in farm-themed stays surging, according booking site Trip.com.
Retail sales, including food, rose by 6.3% during the holiday from a year ago, according to official figures. Tourism revenue increased by 8% to 180.27 billion yuan.
“Despite concerns over macroeconomic headwinds, the strength of travel numbers tells us that consumer sentiment is resilient,” said Jacob Cooke, co-founder and CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies. The company helps foreign brands — such as Vitamix and IS Clinical — sell online in China and other parts of Asia.
“******** consumers are prioritizing spending on what matters most to them — and right now, that includes travel,” he said.
When ******** consumers were asked where they expected to increase their spending this year, travel topped the list, followed by groceries, according to a survey conducted on behalf of financial services firm TD Cowen in February and published last month.
However, in a sign of lingering uncertainty, fewer respondents than last year said they had made travel plans for the next six months. The survey covered 2,000 ******** residents.
Sales of retail goods have remained tepid since the Covid-19 pandemic, up by just 3.5% last year, according to official data. The services sector, including tourism, sports and childcare, has seen faster growth at 6.2% last year. China started reporting services retail sales on a year-to-date basis in July 2023.
‘Future of tourism’
******** cities have meanwhile stepped up their efforts to attract tourists, whether through short videos on social media, virtual reality experiences or elaborate light shows splashed across skyscrapers.
Some cities, such as the panda hub of Chengdu, are starting to use drones for delivering food within scenic parks, or renting out robotic-powered hiking support, Dudarenok pointed out.
“We’re going to see basically a lot of what the future of tourism is going to look like, and China is testing that massively over this May day holiday,” she said, noting that places that have invested a lot are seeing robust tourist numbers.
Chengdu, for instance, claimed a 6.2% year-on-year increase in tourist trips over the holiday to 15.52 million. That’s nearly three-fourths of the city’s population of 21.4 million, as of 2023.
Social media influencers, as well as word-of-mouth comments about cleanliness and safety are also helping ******** cities attract foreign travelers, Huang said.
Huang said his hostel primarily served international visitors prior to Covid, and the share of foreign guests has recovered modestly to about one-fifth of customers. Local visitors tend to concentrate their travel during public holidays, while trips by foreign tourists are more spaced out, he said.
China has expanded its visa-free policies in the last two years to attract foreign tourists. Citizens of the U.S., U.K., Canada and more than 50 other countries can now stay in China for 10 days without a visa, while people from Japan, South Korea and several European countries can visit for up to 30 days.
Inbound travel to China around the May Labor Day holidays rose by more than 40% from last year, according to Hostel World. The data showed Chongqing, Yangshou and Guilin surged in popularity versus Beijing and Shanghai.

For second time in 8 days, U.S. fighter jet assigned to USS Truman is lost in Red Sea
For second time in 8 days, U.S. fighter jet assigned to USS Truman is lost in Red Sea
For the second time in just over a week, an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet assigned to the USS Harry S. Truman has been lost in the Red Sea, a defense official confirmed to CBS News. The two pilots aboard the aircraft sustained minor injuries in the ordeal.
The official said in a statement that the Super Hornet was attempting to land on the flight deck of the Truman Tuesday “when an arrestment failed, causing the aircraft to go overboard.”
An arrestment is the mechanism that a carrier uses to safely slow down and halt a fighter jet as it lands.
“Both aviators safely ejected and were rescued by a helicopter assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 11,” the official said. “The aviators were evaluated by medical personnel and assessed to have minor injuries. No flight deck personnel were injured.”
On April 28, a Super Hornet was being towed in the Truman hangar bay when crews lost control of the aircraft and it went overboard, along with the tow tractor. One sailor suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Two U.S. officials told CBS News that initial reports suggested the jet may have fallen overboard after the carrier turned sharply while taking evasive action against Yemen’s Houthi militants.
Sean Parnell, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, said in statement that the Super Hornet that went into the Red Sea Tuesday “was not struck by the Houthis.”
The Truman Carrier Strike Group has experienced several serious incidents since it deployed to the Middle East in September 2024. In December, the USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 which had taken off from the Truman. The two-person crew were able to safely eject.
In February, the Truman accidentally collided with a merchant vessel near the Suez Canal.
Also Tuesday, President Trump disclosed that the Iranian-backed Houthis had agreed to a deal that would see them halt their attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea. Those attacks started in the wake of ******’ Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel.

‘Lots of blood’: Radio communication during Bondi attack revealed in inquest
‘Lots of blood’: Radio communication during Bondi attack revealed in inquest
Radio calls warning “lots of blood you need to hurry”, have been aired in court as new details of a fatal stabbing attack at Bondi Junction Westfield emerge.
Six people were killed and 10 others were injured in the attack at Westfield Bondi Junction on April 13, 2024.
Dawn Singleton, Yixuan Cheng, Faraz Ahmed Tahir, Ashlee Good, ***** Young and Pikria Darchia died in the incident.
Cauchi, 40, had gone on a rampage through the palatial shopping centre with a WWII knife purchased at a camping store before being gunned down by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott.
A five-week coronial inquest into the deadly stabbing began last Monday, with the first week revealing never-before-heard details about the incident.
Scentre Group operate a string of Westfields across Australia including Bondi Junction.
The nature, timing, and adequacy of the response by Scentre Group and its subcontractors Glad Group and Falkon Security will also be examined in the inquest.
Scentre Group retail manager Joseph Gaerlan gave evidence in court on Tuesday, where it was revealed he had heard a radio broadcast while he was in the bathroom in the centre management office.

“Code ******, code ****** alpha, there’s lots of blood — you need to hurry,” was broadcast over the radio, though he said no location was given.
He told the court a code ****** indicates a threat, while alpha is to escalate that.
In the days after the attack he’d recalled hearing there was a man with a knife over the radio and a possible fatality, however he has since amended this statement upon reviewing CCTV of his actions on the day.
“This recollection was taken three days after the incident had taken place …(it was) such a blur for myself,” Mr Gaerlan told the court.
“I was highly emotional and highly stressed at the time and maybe my mind thought that happened.”
If he had heard there was a man with a knife and a possible fatality, he said it would’ve been “almost certain it was an active armed offender (AAO) situation” and there would have been a “very different reaction”.
The court was shown CCTV footage of Mr Gaerlan rushing out of the bathroom where he saw other staffing heading down to the centre.
He went back to his desk to grab his blazer before going to the lifts and then walking towards the mall to see what was going on.
CCTV played in court showed him walking through the mall where a number of customers gather around him asking what was happening, as retailers were also closing their shutters.
The customers all appeared calm: no announcements had been made at that stage. While walking towards the level five air bridge he heard a security controller say “code ******, there’s an active armed offender, contact blue lights immediately, we need urgent backup” over the radio.

This was the first time he had heard there was an active armed offender.
He “turned on his heel” after hearing this and ran the other way, broadcasting to the control room asking to confirm police had been contacted and to make PA announcements for an AAO situation.
The court was told he then returned to the centre management office to review CCTV, but upon realising it would take too long to find his logins, he again left the office to head to the CCTV control room.
Customers were seen rushing into the lift Mr Gaerlan had taken.
He was on the phone to the regional manager when he entered the control room about 3.40pm — about seven minutes after the attack began — and then had an exchange with one of the operators in the control room.
“I still did not have eyes on the situation, I recall being frustrated,” he told the court, saying he had asked if they knew the location, how many offenders and what weapons were involved.
“I was not provided with an answer at this time,” he said.
Another controller was able to flick through footage and determine there was only one offender.
“When the male confirmed … there was one offender, he showed me on the CCTV that a male in a green jersey was on the ground,” he said.
However it was unclear whether information of there being a single offender was relayed to police at the time.
No staff in CCTV control room when attack began
The court was earlier told there were two staff members in the CCTV control room on level 4 on the afternoon of the attack, however, one had left about 3pm with his supervisor to undertake training on level 13.
The other left the room at about 3.32pm to go to the bathroom just metres outside the control room, meaning there was “no active CCTV monitoring in place” for the minute and forty seconds she was outside the room.
“It just so happened that exactly 40 seconds after …(she) left for the bathroom … Mr Cauchi attacked Ms Singleton,” counsel assisting the coroner Peggy Dwyer SC last week told the court.
“And over the next 30 seconds, Cauchi attacked a further six individuals.”
When she re-entered the control room at about 3.33pm Cauchi had attacked eight people by then, three of whom later died.
The second security employee re-entered the CCTV control room by 3.36pm, however, all 16 people had been stabbed by then.
Ms Dwyer said it appeared the CCTV room being vacant at that time impeded Scentre Group’s response.
“Security staff were effectively behind the 8-ball – that is, they were then playing catch-up, catch up to understand what was unfolding,” Ms Dwyer said.
Ms Dwyer said available evidence suggested initial contact and information exchanged between the control room and emergency services took place about 10 minutes after Cauchi was shot, and that an alert wasn’t activated until about 3.39pm.
An evacuation alert was appeared to be used rather than one that warned of an active armed offender (AAO).
Camera IconBondi killer Joel Cauchi. Supplied. Credit: Supplied
Later attempts to correct this were unsuccessful because of the evacuation alert in place, Ms Dwyer said.
She said it also appeared appropriately warning customers and staff “did not occur promptly” on the day of the attack, and “did not occur in the way it should’ve done”.
The first public announcement of an evacuation, rather than an AAO, was also not made until 3.52pm from the fire control room, which was located externally to the CCTV control room.
Ms Dwyer said the control operator tasked with making the announcement was “distressed and distraught”, leading people to be unsure whether she had been taken hostage or was making the announcement “under duress”.
The PA told bystanders to evacuate now, while shop attendants told bystanders they should not evacuate.
Police also appeared to be under advice that people should remain in place.
Ms Dwyer said the operator read “verbatim” from a script in a “distressed voice … in a way that may have led to confusion”.
“Firstly Mr Cauchi had been shot about 15 minutes prior, so it’s not suggested that level of confusion at that stage … made a difference to who could’ve survived,” Ms Dwyer said.
“Secondly, clearly these are individuals who’ve never been through something like this before, so its natural that stress … is overwhelming, or might be.
“But it is important, in our respectful submission, to learn from the mistakes that have been made here.”
Many customers and first responders reported the alarms set off were extremely loud and had impaired communications.
Ms Dwyer said communications from the CCTV control room to both security staff and first responders might appear “ineffective”, but it was “in part exacerbated by issues” faced by NSW Police and NSW Ambulance first responders.
She said if Inspector Scott had not been on the scene so quickly there was a “real possibility” Cauchi’s attack could have continued on.
“I expect Your Honor will hear that there have been proactive steps already taken to remedy some of the issues outlined,” Ms Dwyer said.
She noted the involved parties were also open to hearing other suggestions.

Scientists Built a ‘Toy Model’ of a ****** Hole Bomb—and Brought a 50-Year-Old Theory to Life
Scientists Built a ‘Toy Model’ of a ****** Hole Bomb—and Brought a 50-Year-Old Theory to Life
An experimental setup mimics a “****** hole bomb” first theorized in 1971.
The spinning cylinder with circuitry is true to the original idea, showing that it can be plausible.
Electrical waves spin off in random ways until they compound and create a runaway effect.
There’s nothing some physicists love more than an outlandishly impossible sounding idea, from nuclear fusion power plants to Star Trek’s warp drive. (Fusion people, don’t come for us—we’ll happily share when a plant makes net energy over its operating costs, whenever that may be.) And recently, in a study uploaded to the preprint server arXiv, a team of scientists claimed to have made a very simplified “toy model” of something known as a ****** hole bomb. Could this particular decades-old idea be making a move toward real life? The answer is complicated.
A ****** hole bomb is not a true ****** hole, obviously, but it is heavily inspired by the massive gravity wells. In 1971, Yakov Zeldovich iterated on Roger Penrose’s groundbreaking observations about ****** holes and wondered if the conditions seen in these structures could be harnessed as energy. Unlike a space superstructure, a ****** hole bomb might be a graspable human size.
But scientists like Stephen Hawking predicted that, under some conditions, this energy would be too small to measure and verify the theories. Zeldovich, therefore, suggested adding a resonator in the form of a cylindrical mirror surrounding the original cylinder. Like an insulated coffee cup, the added metallic layer would reflect energy back into the ****** hole, and that energy would accumulate until it exploded outward and shattered the mirror. Others have iterated on these designs ever since.
In this recent study, the research team attempted to take that ****** hole bomb concept from idea to reality—or, at least, take the first step towards reality by creating a toy model. A toy model is a very boiled down version of a theorized system, as the name suggests. Today, toy models explore things like quantum information theory or nanomaterials—in other recently published research, scientists used one to help model the strength of mismatched shapes and study how a particular arrangement of quantum qubits performs in computing.
To create their toy model, the scientists nested a conductive aluminum cylinder—solid and just four centimeters in diameter—inside three concentric layers of circuitry. The setup was then rotated by an attached direct current motor (not that different from what powers an electric drill or rotating cake plate). As the assembly spun, the waves it produced grew more and more unstable until they achieved a runaway chain reaction effect.
As the spinning cylinder generated positive energy radiating outward, the ****** hole effect created in its center absorbed all the negative energy, and the positive energy increased even more as the cylinder continued to rotate. But, instead of resulting in the predicted explosion, the team designed their assembly to switch itself off once it reached a certain point, ensuring that it did not explode (a good call, because it sure seems like it could have otherwise).
“[T]he physical ingredients are as proposed more than 50 years ago,” the scientists explained. “The results show that extraction of rotational energy can be observed at low-frequencies, where the conditions for negative energies (or negative resistances) can be met. Furthermore, it also shows how this unstable regime can be switched on and off as predicted for the ****** hole bomb.”
In other words, this setup realizes—almost exactly—what the “golden age” ****** hole pioneers of the 1960s and 1970s were theorizing. The rest of the way toward a true ****** hole bomb, the team concluded, is a matter of when, not if. In the meantime, these results must be evaluated and recreated by others.

The 17-year-old who swapped school for A-League finals
The 17-year-old who swapped school for A-League finals
Dylan Leonard is getting a different education this year.
While his mates are preparing for exams, the 17-year-old Western United sensation is studying up on strikers under the tutelage of one of Australia’s greatest ever marksmen.
United coach John Aloisi can’t stop praising the talented young centre-back who has looked mature beyond his years at the heart of defence.
And Leonard is soaking up every bit of Aloisi’s advice.
“He says to play with confidence, especially when you make mistakes – don’t change, don’t do anything different, like you’re there for a reason,” Leonard told AAP ahead of his finals debut.
“Play the way you play.”
Last year, Leonard was juggling studies and football.
But battling with fatigue, he dropped out earlier this year.
Leonard started believing he could belong at A-League level when he went toe-to-toe with Melbourne City stars Marco Tilio and Andrew Nabbout in a pre-season friendly.
After a calf injury to James Donachie created a starting opportunity, Leonard hasn’t looked back.
Leonard could have gone with the Young Socceroos to the U20 Asian Cup – where they won silverware and U20 World Cup qualification – but chose to stay behind to cement his spot at United.
He has no regrets.
“As much as an honour it is to play for your country, for me, I felt like the right footballing decision was to stay,” Leonard said.
“We had a few tough games coming up, and I wasn’t too happy with the way I was playing, and really wanted to get back onto the next game and get better.
“I felt if I’d gone away, it wasn’t the right thing for me or for the team.
“I’m happy they won it. It brings a lot of confidence and shows the level of *********** football.”
Leonard, whose family is Scottish, dreams of one day playing for Celtic, while he’d love to emulate former Sydney FC young gun Hayden Matthews in cracking the Socceroos.
“It shows that the coaches are willing to put trust in young players,” he said.
“That’s something the A-League’s starting to do as well, not just the national team, and it’s paying off.
“There’s a lot more players going overseas, and then because of that, we’re building a better national team.”
After beating Auckland last Saturday to seal third place, Western will host Adelaide United in their elimination final at Ironbark Fields on Friday night.
Although golden boot winner Archie Goodwin (hamstring) won’t feature, Leonard is wary of Adelaide’s attack.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they threw something different at us this week,” Leonard said.

Trump Treasury Secretary Crashes When Asked Easy Question on Tariffs
Trump Treasury Secretary Crashes When Asked Easy Question on Tariffs
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stumbled and deflected when asked a simple, direct question about tariffs at a congressional hearing on Tuesday.
“Who pays tariffs Mr. Secretary?” asked Representative Mark Pocan.
Bessent began to ramble on indirectly, frustrating Pocan. “Who pays tariffs? Mr. Secretary, please the question is very simply who pays tariffs. Mr. Chairman, I’d like him to answer that question, he wants to answer other questions.”
Bessent replied shakily. “Well congressman, if the. Congressman, if the exporters, the uh, dislike tariffs so much, why wouldn’t they. If, I think what you’re trying to get me to say—”
“Did you remember the question? I’m not sure you did,” Pocan said. “Who pays tariffs?”
‘It’s a very complicated question.”
“Reclaiming my time. People pay tariffs, right?”
“No, no, no,” Bessent muttered, while Pocan reclaimed his time.
“You clearly aren’t gonna answer, I’m not gonna waste my time having you go ‘uh uh uh uh.’”
The Trump administration is doing everything in its power to gaslight Americans into thinking that the tariffs will be positive, that we’ll just have some short term discomfort before everything is cheap and made in America again. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
