  1. 2 Most Annoying Heroes in Marvel Rivals Are Getting All New Skins 2 Most Annoying Heroes in Marvel Rivals Are Getting All New Skins Skins and cosmetics have been a major point of focus in Marvel Rivals, with the developers pumping out two skins weekly. In addition to that, the skins released together are of different rarities, with some exceptions. While some characters are getting favored, others are getting either just acknowledged or flat-out ignored. With seasonal events come seasonal cosmetics, and the developers have already started rolling out summer-themed skins, and the first pair is set to release this week. There are no downsides to receiving more skins other than the fact that two of the most annoying heroes in the game are first in line to receive theirs. Rocket Raccoon and Squirrel Girl are receiving ‘Sunshine’ Skins The official Marvel Rivals account on X revealed that Rocket Raccoon and Squirrel Girl are the first heroes to receive their summer-themed skins called ‘Sunshine,’ and they will release on May 8 at 7 PM PDT. It’s currently unknown what rarities these skins belong to and what they will cost, but it’s safe to assume that they will arrive with their own MVP animations, nameplates, emotes, and sprays. They could also arrive with new color options since only a handful of skins have them, and it’s high time they did more. Soak Up The Sun! Embrace the flarkin’ hot summer with Rocket Raccoon’s Sunshine Raccoon and Squirrel Girl’s Sunshine Squirrel costumes. Channel the heat and ignite the battlefield with summer fun! Available: May 8 at 7:00 PM PDT! Keep your cool while burning your… pic.twitter.com/VHBHxdVgAy — Marvel Rivals (@MarvelRivals) May 6, 2025 It’s also highly likely that these skins will be sold together in a separate bundle, a trend that Marvel Rivals has followed with their previous seasonal skins. Once they release, lobbies will be swarming with players wearing them, and hearing Galacta announcing defeat at the end of a match will feel even more frustrating. Rocket’s healing and amplifier feel great when he’s on your team, even after the nerf, but infuriating when you hear the words “This is real firepower!” Squirrel Girl, on the other hand, is a whole different story altogether, as her nuts are bound to hit regardless of wherever you are and whoever you’re playing with, which makes her an incredibly annoying duelist to go up against. But overall, the consistent release of skins and their beautiful designs is worthy of admiration, and no other hero shooter is doing it quite like Marvel Rivals. The inclusion of MVP animations, new emotes, and nameplates paired with the visually appealing art style of the game makes every bundle worth its price, with the only varying factor being the rarity of these skins. Although it wouldn’t hurt to give skins to characters who don’t have many in the first place. Swimsuit Special skins are on their way to Marvel Rivals Swimsuit outfits are coming to Marvel Rivals | Image Credit: NetEase Games Speaking of seasonal skins, Marvel Rivals is set to receive new costumes inspired by designs featured in Marvel’s Swimsuit Special later this year. While the special is launching next month, it’s currently unknown when the skins will pop up in the game. However, the comic designs will give us an idea of how the skins will look when they eventually arrive in Marvel Rivals in the near future. Judging from past trends, female heroes will likely get swimsuit skins first before male ones, and it’s exactly for the reason you think. Well, one can hope that they also give some attention to the male heroes while making skimpy and revealing cosmetics, but at the end of the day, we’ll have to wait and see what they’ll cook up. So, what do you think about the summer-themed skins so far? Do you like the selection of heroes that they went for, or do you want them to focus more on other heroes? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below. Source link #Annoying #Heroes #Marvel #Rivals #Skins Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Asylum accommodation costs set to triple, says National Audit Office Asylum accommodation costs set to triple, says National Audit Office Accommodation for asylum seekers will cost the taxpayer triple the amount the Home Office first claimed, according to new figures. Contracts signed by the Conservative government in 2019 were expected to see £4.5bn of public cash paid to three companies over a 10-year *******. But a report by spending watchdog the National Audit Office (NAO) says that number is now expected to be £15.3bn. The NAO says ministers have “few levers” to control the rising costs, which have largely been driven by an increase in the number of asylum seekers housed in hotels. The average yearly cost of asylum accommodation is now expected to be higher than the amount ministers hope to save from cutting the winter fuel payment. The NAO report, which was commissioned by Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee, says the number of asylum seekers in hotels increased from around 47,000 in December 2019 to 110,000 in December 2024. Three quarters of all the money spent on asylum accommodation currently goes on hotels, despite them only accounting for around a third of all the asylum seekers being housed. The NAO says that private providers who sign deals with the government may profit more from hotels than other types of accommodation. In 2019, Conservative ministers signed seven regional contracts with three companies – Serco, Mears and Clearsprings – to help house asylum seekers. The NAO says the three companies made a combined profit of £383m on asylum accommodation contracts between September 2019 and August 2024. A large part of the extra costs is accounted for by Clearsprings’ contract in the south of England, which has risen from £0.7bn to an expected £7bn. Clearsprings’ founder and director, Graham King, has previously donated to the Conservative Party, through other companies he has owned. A Home Office spokesperson said the Labour government “inherited an asylum system in chaos” and criticised the Conservatives for signing “disastrous contracts that were wasting millions in taxpayer money”. They said there were now fewer asylum hotels open than since the election and that measures taken were “forecast to save the taxpayer £4bn by the end of 2026”. The Home Office has an optional break clause next year in the contracts with the three companies, but it’s understood these will not be triggered. A senior Home Office source said the main driving force behind the rising accommodation costs was the increase in people crossing the channel on small boats. They said the border has “slowly but surely been handed over to people smuggling gangs”, which meant the Conservative government had to quickly sign contracts that were “not in any state fit”. The source said that ministers were in contact with Serco, Mears and Clearsprings “very regularly” and that the Labour government wants to “hold their feet to the fire”. They refused to speculate on whether any of the three companies would likely be involved in asylum accommodation contracts after 2029. Decisions taken by Boris Johnson’s government to stop processing many asylum claims are seen as a major driving force behind the initial increase in asylum seekers needing to be housed. Rishi Sunak’s government began to process more of those asylum cases, but his claim to have cleared the backlog was rebuked by the ***’s statistics watchdog last year. Home Office figures released in February showed the number of people claiming asylum in the *** had reached its highest level since records began in 1979. The last Conservative government pledged to end the use of hotels to house asylum seekers in October 2023. The overall number of hotels in use has since gone down, and Labour has also pledged to end them. But last November a Home Office minister admitted that the number of hotels in use had started to increase again. 9. Keir Starmer defends winter fuel cuts in face of calls for U-turn Keir Starmer defends winter fuel cuts in face of calls for U-turn Becky Morton Political reporter PMQs: Badenoch presses PM on winter fuel payment Sir Keir Starmer has defended the decision to axe winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners, as calls for a reversal of the policy continue. A group of around 45 Labour MPs representing seats in northern England and the Midlands have joined those urging the government to rethink the move. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch pressed Sir Keir to “listen to his own party and change course”. The policy has partly been blamed for Labour’s poor performance in last week’s local elections in England, which saw the party lose two-thirds of the council seats it was defending. Reform *** also defeated Labour in the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning a majority of nearly 15,000 to take the seat by just six votes. The results have led to growing calls to rethink winter fuel cuts from senior Labour figures, including Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan. But on Tuesday the government insisted it would not be changing the policy, which was introduced last year. In the House of Commons, Badenoch asked the PM if he would now admit “he was wrong to remove the winter fuel payment from millions of pensioners”. Defending the move, Sir Keir said: “The number one job of this government was to put our finances back in order after the last government lost control. “That is to deal with the £22bn ****** hole that they left. Because of our action, we’ve stabilised the economy.” He also stressed the government was committed to the triple lock, under which pensions go up each year by the highest of inflation, average earnings or 2.5%. Hitting back, Badenoch said: “The only ****** hole is the one the prime minister is digging. “This issue affects some of the poorest and most vulnerable pensioners. His mayor in Doncaster says it’s wrong. His first minister in Wales says it’s wrong. Even his own MPs are saying it’s wrong. He’s refused to listen to me on this, will he at least listen to his own party and change course?” In response, Sir Keir said: “No other party is saying how they would invest in our NHS and public services.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey also urged the PM to reverse the cuts, saying this was “among the messages voters sent ministers last week”. The winter fuel payment is a lump sum worth between £200 and £300, designed to help with higher energy costs during the colder weather. It was previously paid to all pensioners but last year the government restricted this to only the poorest, who qualify for pension credit and other income-related benefits, in a bid save £1.4bn. The move, which did not feature in Labour’s general election manifesto, means around nine million pensioners no longer qualify for the payment. Labour MPs who oppose the cuts believe a reversal of the policy would be a clear sign from the prime minister that he is listening to voters. However, others closer to government thinking question whether there would be any political benefit to changing course at this stage, believing the damage has already been done. Criticism of changes to disability benefits, which would make it harder for people to claim Personal Independence Payment (Pip), could become a more pressing issue, with a vote in the House of Commons likely next month. Given Labour’s large majority there is no prospect of the government losing the vote but it could become a focus of broader disaffection. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 to Reportedly Be World’s Thinnest Foldable When Launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 to Reportedly Be World’s Thinnest Foldable When Launched Phone brands today are prioritising ultra-thin designs as a key aesthetic choice. With competition heating up in the foldable smartphone market, Samsung seems to be aiming to bring its upcoming foldable with a slim form factor. A recent leak suggests that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 could debut as the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone. It is said to measure 8.9mm in thickness in the folded state. However, Samsung’s push for a slimmer design may come at a cost; the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is tipped to retain the 4,400mAh battery as the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Tipster Ice Universe on X wrote that Samsung’s next flagship devices will continue to prioritise a slim and lightweight design. The tipster states that Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone at launch, measuring just 3.9mm when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded. Oppo’s Find N5, which is claimed to be “the world’s thinnest foldable” phone, measures 8.93mm in foldable state and 4.21mm when unfolded. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7’s Thinner Design May Come at a Cost Samsung’s focus on thinness may come with a compromise on the battery capacity of the foldable. The tipster claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will feature a 4,400mAh battery, same as last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, the brand is said to introduce new battery and charging technologies for the device. The leaks suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will carry a 4,300mAh battery. This would be an upgrade compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s 4,000mAh battery. Further, the tipster claims that the base model of the Galaxy S26 will maintain a sleek, thin profile. For reference, Samsung’s current Galaxy S25 is 7.2mm thick. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are expected to be unveiled in July. The former is tipped to run on a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy SoC with 12GB of RAM. The Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, is said to run on Samsung’s Exynos 2500 chipset. 13. Is Gears of War: Reloaded cross-platform? Is Gears of War: Reloaded cross-platform? We all thought the next time we saw Marcus Fenix again would be in the prequel Gears of War: E-Day, but it turns out we were treated to a fresh take on the original game first. Gears of War: Reloaded was revealed as a remaster of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which itself was a remake of the original game. If you’re lost, all you need to know is this is the first game in the epic saga of burly men cutting monsters in half with chainsaw guns. Alongside Halo, this was the premier multiplayer and co-op experience on Xbox, and all those maps and modes will be back. But is this going to be a similar situation to Forza Horizon 5 adding cross-platform support, or be restricted like Elden Ring: Nightreign? After practicing our perfect reloads and filling our Lancers with gas, we learned all the details about Gears of War: Reloaded‘s cross-platform support. Is Gears of War: Reloaded cross-platform? Xbox Yes, for the first time ever, PlayStation fans will be able to play this franchise on their consoles alongside and against Xbox and PC players. As detailed in the official news post, Gears of War: Reloaded is coming out on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC with complete crossplay support. This means that PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players can all engage in Lancer duels online together in all the multiplayer modes with up to eight players. Co-op is also back, either in split-screen or online with two players, which also supports crossplay for all platforms. The best part is that crossplay is enabled without the need to make or sign in with a Microsoft account, though you will need one to invite friends into your game if they are on other platforms. However, cross-progression is a different story. Gears of War: Reloaded does have complete cross-progression for both your campaign and multiplayer progress between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, but this will require you to use a Microsoft account. So, if you plan on playing in a squad with someone on a different platform or will be bouncing between two or more yourself, you will need a Microsoft account. 14. Asus ROG Ally 2 leaks with AMD Z2 Extreme CPU and 64GB RAM — ****** variant features a dedicated Xbox button Asus ROG Ally 2 leaks with AMD Z2 Extreme CPU and 64GB RAM — ****** variant features a dedicated Xbox button Microsoft’s project Kennan handheld is finally materializing in the form of a variant of the ROG Ally 2 series, as revealed by reports by 91mobiles and Huang514613 at X. Asus is allegedly prepping two variants of its ROG Ally 2 lineup: a ****** model featuring a dedicated Xbox Button and a white model with toned-down specifications intended for the mainstream. Project Kennan has been official for a while. While we lacked specifics about the handheld, this new leak should help fill the gaps. Once the model ID numbers were revealed, they were shortly linked to listings of the handhelds in the US FCC repository. The significant differences between both models mirror how the original ROG Ally varied, offering AMD’s Z1 (with 4 CUs) and the more powerful Z1 Extreme (12 CUs) models, at a $100 price gap. Either way, Asus is still sticking to x86 roots for this handheld to maintain compatibility with existing software and games. The Xbox Button on the ****** variant practically shouts Project Kennan. Despite the fanfare, it’ll probably still run Windows 11, not a custom Operating System designed explicitly for handhelds. In addition, the added button probably serves to open the Game Bar, as you would on a PC. Let’s wait for the official announcement to see if Microsoft has included other features and software-level optimizations. It supports 64GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory, a 2TB NVMe SSD, and 100W charging. The display is said to include a touch-capable 7-inch LCD (likely IPS) featuring a 120 Hz refresh rate. The white model is listed with a never-before-seen APU from AMD, carrying the OPN code: “100-000001835”. This model gets 16GB of RAM, a 7-inch 120 Hz display, and supports 65W charging. Current data suggests the onboard APU, codenamed Aerith Plus, is a successor or potential refresh of AMD’s Von Gogh found on the Steam Deck. The leaker claims this APU, purportedly from AMD’s Z2 series and dubbed “Ryzen Z2 A,” has a quad-core layout and a 6W-20W TDP. Specifics such as the architecture and integrated GPU are unknown, but we should hear more from AMD/Asus at Computex. 15. 4 Lessons for Trump From the ***’s Failed Rwanda Migrant Deportation Deal 4 Lessons for Trump From the ***’s Failed Rwanda Migrant Deportation Deal On Sunday, Rwanda’s foreign minister said his country was in “early stage” talks with the Trump administration about a deal to take in migrants deported from the United States. That news had a familiar ring in Britain, where the former Conservative-led government agreed to a deal in 2022 to permanently deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, then spent two years and hundreds of millions of pounds trying — largely fruitlessly — to make the plan happen. When Britain’s highest court ruled that the proposal broke human rights law, the Conservative government tried to use new legislation to override the judgment. But in the end, the policy proved an almost complete failure, and the new Labour government, which was elected last year, scrapped it, citing its huge expense and unworkability. Here are some lessons the British debacle may hold for the Trump administration. It could be expensive. The British government spent 715 million pounds, about $955 million, on the plan, which it claimed would deter ******** migration. As well as £290 million paid directly to the Rwandan government, millions more went on preparing deportation flights, readying detention centers and I.T. systems, and paying for staffing and legal costs. But in the end, only four migrants ended up being sent to Rwanda — and they went voluntarily and were paid £3,000 each to do so. Official documents show that the figures were a small fraction of what would have been spent if the deal had been fully carried out. The British government had agreed to pay Rwanda £150,000 for every person deported, a sum that would pay for a five-year “integration package” of accommodation, food, medical services and education. After the deal was scrapped, Rwanda said it would not pay any money back as there was no reimbursement clause. Yvette Cooper, the Labour home secretary, said that the Conservatives ultimately planned to spend more than £10 billion on the Rwanda policy over a six-year *******. The Conservatives argued that the cost was worth it because fewer people would try to come to Britain on small boats if they feared being sent to Rwanda. Rwanda probably can’t take large numbers of deportees. The Central African country is only about 10,000 square miles in size, about the same as Massachusetts. The Trump administration has not disclosed how many people it might want to send to Rwanda, which is already one of the world’s most densely populated nations. During a British Supreme Court hearing in 2023, a lawyer representing the government acknowledged that the number of asylum seekers that Rwanda could take was “initially low” and cited a need for “capacity building” in the country. British news reports at the time suggested that a maximum of 1,000 people in total could have been transferred from Britain to Rwanda over five years. In 2022, the year the deal was struck, at least 45,000 people arrived in Britain on small boats. Under an Israeli deal, migrants sent to Rwanda disappeared. Any agreement with Washington would be the latest in a series of migration agreements struck by Rwanda. The African nation already hosts hundreds of African refugees from Libya who are awaiting resettlement under a deal agreed to six years ago with the United Nations refugee agency and the African Union. The British treaty was never fully tested before being scrapped. But a secretive agreement signed with Israel in 2013 operated for five years before being ruled unlawful by the Israeli Supreme Court. Details of that agreement were discussed during the court battle in Britain. Under the Israeli deal, Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers who had sought refuge in Israel were deported to Rwanda with “explicit undertakings” that they would have their claims considered and would “enjoy human rights and freedoms,” according to documents provided in evidence during the British Supreme Court’s hearings. But the British justices found that Rwanda had not complied with those assurances and that asylum seekers deported by Israel “were routinely moved clandestinely to Uganda” by being driven to the border or put on flights. The Rwandan government did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this article. There could be legal challenges. The Trump administration has already shown a willingness to defy the courts, given that it has so far refused to comply with orders to return at least two men wrongly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador. But in the case of Britain, the fact that the plan would have breached multiple domestic laws enforcing human rights, as well as the United Nations Refugee Convention, contributed to the plan’s ultimate failure. Under the terms of the deal, Rwanda was to take in undocumented migrants and process their asylum applications. Even if the migrants were later found to qualify for refugee status, they were expected to be resettled in Rwanda and never return to Britain. The British Supreme Court ruled in November 2023 that the plan was unlawful because of the risk that genuine refugees could be sent back to the countries they had fled, putting their safety at risk. 16. ‘It’s not some nebulous impact’ ‘It’s not some nebulous impact’ By 2050, nearly 324,000 people across New Jersey could face a serious challenge: stronger coastal floods that could disrupt daily life, according to a new report from Climate Central. As seas rise and storms get supercharged by the planet-overheating pollution from burning dirty energy sources, both coastal and inland communities are preparing for ******* changes than many might expect. What’s happening? A new study from Climate Central found that nearly 324,000 New Jersey residents could be at risk from severe coastal flooding by 2050, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. It’s not just beach towns like Wildwood and North Wildwood — where over 90% of residents could be impacted — but also inland areas like Camden, Burlington, and parts of Philadelphia, thanks to rising waters from tidal rivers like the Delaware. Researchers combined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s sea level projections with local population and building data to show that floods expected only “once in a century” could happen about 10 times more often by 2050. As Kelly Van Baalen of Climate Central pointed out, “It’s not some nebulous impact to polar bears or people living in the future, but flooding in my own town.” Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Why is rising flood risk important? Flooding isn’t just an inconvenience — it damages homes, shuts down businesses, and makes it harder for communities to recover after storms. About one in five people living in flood-prone areas is 65 or older, making them especially vulnerable. While extreme weather events have always existed, scientists agree that human-driven changes to the climate now supercharge these events, making storms and floods stronger, more frequent, and more dangerous to our communities. The pollution blanket caused by burning dirty energy is warming the Earth, raising sea levels, and reshaping coastlines. This growing risk mirrors changes happening across the country, from Florida to New York, where real estate markets and infrastructure are adapting to new climate realities. What’s being done about rising flood risk? Thankfully, real solutions are already underway. New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection is restoring coastal wetlands, natural buffers that help absorb storm surges. Cities are updating building codes, reinforcing flood defenses, and rethinking how neighborhoods are built to better stand up to future storms. Broader efforts, like the restoration of wetlands and the implementation of urban climate adaptation strategies, are also helping communities become more resilient. If you’re curious about how you can make an impact, exploring critical climate issues is a great place to start. You can also help shrink pollution at home by installing solar panels through trusted programs such as EnergySage, supporting greener transportation, and backing local community resilience projects. 18. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is pressed to spare civil rights-era “peacemakers” program from closure U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is pressed to spare civil rights-era “peacemakers” program from closure Top House Democrats on Wednesday are asking Attorney General Pam Bondi to spare a civil rights-era office that has frequently been referred to as the “peacemakers program.” An internal Justice Department memo reviewed by CBS News last month said President Trump’s appointees are considering closing the Community Relations Service, which was created as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The mission of the office is to be “America’s peacemaker,” tasked with “preventing and resolving racial and ethnic tensions, conflicts, and civil disorders, and in restoring racial stability and harmony.” In a letter sent Wednesday to Bondi and the Justice Department, more than two dozen House Democrats wrote, “We strongly urge you to abandon any plans of dissolving the work of the Community Relations Service.” The letter, which included Rep. Bobby Scott, a Virginia Democrat who is the ranking member of the House Education Committee, said the Community Relations Service combats violence and city unrest. The letter says the office’s “work also kept places of worship safe after a series of high-profile attacks in recent years.” Though created during the mid-20th century, the Community Relations Service was expanded under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act in 2008. The Community Relations Service does not investigate or prosecute crimes and has no law enforcement authority, and according to the Justice Department, its services are both confidential and free of charge to communities that accept or request them. In 2021, the agency said of its mission that it sought to help realize Martin Luther King Jr.’s “inspiring dream of a vibrant, all-embracing nation unified in justice, peace, and reconciliation.” The House Democrats who are pressing Bondi to spare the office from reductions wrote, “We are aware that during the previous Trump Administration there was a similar effort to abandon the valuable work of the Community Relations Service by recommending its elimination in budget proposals and reducing staffing.” The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from CBS News. The Community Relations Service worked to ease rising racial tensions after the 1997 fatal police shooting of a ********-American man in Rohnert Park, California, in Akron, Ohio in 2022 after the shooting of a ****** man by police and deploying twice to Minneapolis during the trial of Derek Chauvin after the killing of George Floyd in 2020 in Minnesota. “We would find and stop brush fires, before they became forest fires,” said Ron Wakabayashi, a former regional director of the Community Relations Service. Wakabayashi told CBS News last month he fears the nation will be at greater risk of unrest, boycotts and lawsuits without the agency’s Community Relations Service deployed regionally across the U.S.. 19. Pandora warns U.S. tariffs will spark sweeping jewelry price increases Pandora warns U.S. tariffs will spark sweeping jewelry price increases A charm bracelet on display in a Pandora store in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bloomberg | Getty Images Danish jewelry brand Pandora has warned of significant price increases across the affordable jewelry industry if U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff hikes come into play following the White House’s 90-day pause on the levies announced in April. CEO Alexander Lacik told CNBC that current 10% levies on most U.S. imports were “manageable,” but he noted that if tariffs were to revert to previously announced “reciprocal” rates, then it would be game changing for jewelry manufacturers. “Most jewelers that are in the price segment where we operate, they all import from somewhere in Asia. So you could have an argument if these tariffs remain, then it’s going to be more expensive for everybody that plays,” Lacik told Charlotte Reed. “Therefore we should expect that the consumer pricing will see some change to it,” he added. Pandora, known for its popular charm bracelets and silver jewelry, is heavily dependent on manufacturing in Asia, most notably Thailand but also Vietnam, India and China. Those countries were hit on President Trump’s April 2 “Liberation Day” tariff announcement with reciprocal tariffs ranging from 26% to 46%. That prompted to the company the following day to warn of a significant potential hit to group revenues, which it valued at around 1.2 billion Danish kroner ($182 million) per year. President Trump later announced a 90-day pause and a lower 10% tariff rate for most countries except China, though it is currently unclear what rate countries will face once that pause expires in early July. Asked what level of price rises consumers could expect if tariffs remain in place, Lacik said Pandora had modelled a number of scenarios but that the final figure was likely to be industry-led. “We can all speculate: is it going to be the 34[%] or 40[%],” he said. “We’ve done a number of different scenarios. But we don’t operate in isolation, so we need to see a little bit what the rest of the industry does.” If tariffs remain at 10%, Lacik said it was unlikely the company would need to raise prices. However, if they rose to around 30%, for instance, “then the world changes.” “There are different ways to think about this, so let’s see where it lands,” he said. A plain sterling silver Pandora bracelet currently retails for around $75, while the company’s lab grown diamonds rings are available from $200. Pandora on Wednesday maintained its guidance for 2025 of 7% to 8% organic growth while noting “elevated macro uncertainty.” However, it lowered its operating profit margin guidance by 50 basis points to around 24%, which Lacik attributed to weakness in the U.S. dollar. The revised guidance excludes the impact of potential tariffs beyond the 90-day pause. However, the company said it will provide an update on the potential impact as the situation becomes clearer. “What we have not changed for is expected changes due to whatever happens with the tariffs because, as we stand here today, I don’t know,” Lacik said. Pandora shares were trading up 2.3% by 1:55 p.m. London time. Pandora rules out U.S. manufacturing Pandora currently employs around 8,000 people in the U.S., primarily across its network of stores. Nevertheless, Lacik dismissed the prospect of relocating manufacturing to the U.S. — a key strategic goal of the president’s tariff agenda — saying it wouldn’t make any “financial sense.” “The U.S. labor cost would be completely uncompetitive,” he said. “So if we were to do this, the consumer pricing would have to significantly go up.” Costs aside, the jewelry CEO said the country lacks the suitable skills base to produce Pandora’s handcrafted goods. “I employ up to 15,000 craftspeople in Thailand,” he said. “I can’t find that amount of talent that actually has this craft experience in the U.S. So it’s actually not so much a matter of cost to begin with, it’s about having skilled people who can actually craft the jewelry.” More than costs and labor, however, Lacik said he would be reluctant to boost U.S. investment due to uncertainty. It comes as companies across other sectors, including pharmaceuticals and autos, have been pledging billions of dollars to boost manufacturing in the country. “The more worrying thing in all this, is that it’s not predictable,” Lacik said. “I think this plagues most people like myself that sit on the business side of things.” Source link #Pandora #warns #U.S #tariffs #spark #sweeping #jewelry #price #increases Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Netflix Layout Getting A Major Overhaul With A Dedicated Tab For Games Netflix Layout Getting A Major Overhaul With A Dedicated Tab For Games Netflix has announced an “upgraded TV experience” that includes a redesign of the main layout, and it includes a dedicated tab for games. The update begins its global rollout on May 19, and when it arrives, Netflix said members can expect “better recommendations and an improved interface” with the aim of showing subscribers “what matters most to you.” The updated Netflix layout will include shortcuts for things like Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix. These tabs will be located at the top of the screen. A first glimpse at the new Netflix layout In terms of recommendations, Netflix said the service will show show recommended titles “in real time” with the homepage responding better to viewing and browsing history. “Decision fatigue is real,” Netflix said. 21. Netflix Redesigns TV App With Responsive Recommendations, Adds GenAI Search on iOS Netflix Redesigns TV App With Responsive Recommendations, Adds GenAI Search on iOS Netflix on Wednesday unveiled a redesigned homepage for its TV app, as part of the streaming platform’s efforts to optimise navigation on the app. The company has brought generative AI (GenAI) to the search feature, allowing users to search for content using natural conversation phrases. The app will offer more ‘responsive’ recommendations based on users’ search history and viewing behaviour. Netflix has also announced that the app will accommodate live events and sporting events on the homepage, alongside movies and TV series. Netflix to Offer Improved Recommendations Based on Real-Time Browsing Behaviour In a blog post, the company says that the new Netflix TV homepage was redesigned to make it easier to find movies, shows, games, and live events. The company has moved the My List and Search shortcuts to the top of the screen, to make them easier to access. Meanwhile, the platform says that live events and games will now be accommodated alongside movies and TV shows. Netflix is also upgrading its recommendations, which are now more responsive to a user’s activity on the app. The app will now rely on more information — such as a user’s search history or their viewing behaviour — to improve the quality of content suggestions displayed in the app. The search feature on the Netflix app for iOS is being upgraded using GenAI, and users will be able to use natural phrases to search for movies and TV series on the streaming platform. This is part of an opt-in beta, according to the company. GenAI search on Netflix for iOS Photo Credit: Netflix The AI-powered search feature reportedly being tested by Netflix with users in Australia and New Zealand last month. At the time, the company had stated that it had used AI models from ChatGPT maker OpenAI. Mobile users will also see a new vertical discovery feed with clips from various movies or shows available on the platform, and they can share these with friends, add them to their ‘list’, or start watching it on their mobile device. Netflix says the redesigned homescreen will roll out to users “in the coming weeks and months”. There’s no word from the platform on when the upgraded search experience will be available to users on iOS, and when it will make its way to other platforms, including Android. Last month, Netflix announced that it had updated its TV app with support for multilingual audio, allowing users to watch movies and TV shows in all available languages, across the company’s catalogue. The functionality was previously limited to the Netflix app for iOS and Android smartphones. 22. Ford Motor Stock Rises After Earnings, But Momentum May Not Last Ford Motor Stock Rises After Earnings, But Momentum May Not Last Ford Motor (NYSE:) reported earnings after the market closed on May 5. The automaker’s report was better-than-expected, and the stock jumped nearly 3% the day after the report. The company beat on the top and bottom line with revenue of $40.66 billion, topping the forecast for $35.99 billion. Earnings per share of 12 cents beat analysts’ forecasts of negative 2 cents. But this is likely a case of a company clearing a low bar. The real test will come as Ford stock is likely to face resistance near its 2025 high. As expected, tariffs played a key role in Ford’s earnings call. Automotive stocks are in sharp focus as carmakers are on the front lines of the tariff uncertainty. Although the industry is still waiting for the other shoe to drop as it relates to tariffs, the impacts are already being felt. Here are some things to know before you buy Ford stock. There Are Worse Houses in This Neighborhood, But What Does That Mean? The full impact of the Trump administration’s tariff policies is yet to be felt. However, at the moment, all automakers are dealing with 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts. Ford says it will be less impacted because it produces 80% of the vehicles it sells to U.S. customers at American assembly plants. But less impacted doesn’t mean unimpacted. Even though Ford makes a high percentage of its parts in the United States, it still must import parts. Furthermore, many of the company’s most affordable vehicles, such as its Bronco Sport SUV and Maverick compact pickup truck, are assembled in Mexico. With that in mind, management says it expects a $2.5 billion tariff impact in 2025 but plans to offset $1 billion through internal measures, including cost reductions and logistical adjustments. That leaves a $1.5 billion hit to the company’s 2025 earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT). Perhaps of greater concern is that Ford did not issue forward guidance. That wasn’t unexpected, but it confirms the company’s own uncertainty, which will only add to investor anxiety. Ford May Have Said the Quiet Part Out Loud The $1.5 billion tariff expense also does not reflect the fact that prices for many Ford vehicles will be on the rise. Many analysts expect that it will curtail consumer interest in buying new cars. That’s why it’s important to note what chief executive officer (CEO) Jim Farley said in an interview with CNBC the morning after the earnings report. Farley remarked that 84-month auto loans were “perfectly rational.” In the past, many consumers were loath to take out a 60-month loan. Today, 72-month loans (six years) are normal, particularly for consumers with fair or poor credit. Extending the length of an auto loan would be one way for consumers to “absorb” the higher cost of new vehicles. In fact, it may be the only way some consumers would be able to obtain approval. That may not be a wise personal financial decision. But if Farley is correct that tariffs could raise the cost of imported vehicles by up to $5,000 per vehicle, consumers will be left with a difficult choice. To make that choice a little easier, Ford announced in early April that consumers can get employee pricing through June 2, 2025. That will mean vehicles will be available at below invoice prices. If You Buy F Stock, Expect Volatility Even if investors get more clarity on tariffs, it’s going to be a rough year to own auto stocks. Ford does, perhaps, offer investors less tariff exposure, but that’s about the extent of the good news. Analyst sentiment is mixed since earnings, but the consensus price target of $9.87 would be 5.5% lower than the stock’s closing price on May 6. The company’s first quarter suggests that many consumers front-loaded their purchase decisions relative to new vehicles. That means the first quarter is likely to be the high point in terms of revenue. Those sales still left the company’s revenue 4.9% lower on a year-over-year basis. The company’s dividend complicates investors’ buying decisions. Currently, investors get a 5.74% yield and an annual payout per share of 60 cents. However, with earnings under pressure, it wouldn’t be unthinkable that the company could cut its dividend, particularly as it’s still paying the United Auto Workers (UAW) $8.8 billion through 2028. At the time the deal was signed, Farley said the costs were unsustainable and could make the company a bankruptcy risk. 23. Cardinal Dolan of New York Shares His Conclave Advice: ‘Bring a Book’ Cardinal Dolan of New York Shares His Conclave Advice: ‘Bring a Book’ Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York has some advice for cardinals who are about to experience their first conclave. “Bring a book,” he said in an interview on Tuesday afternoon, as the cardinals packed their bags to move into Casa Santa Marta, the ******** City guesthouse where scores of cardinals stay during the conclave, the process of selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church. “I do,” said Cardinal Dolan, “because in the conclave is mostly silence.” When the cardinals meet for the conclave, they gather in the Sistine Chapel. All cardinal electors must swear an oath of secrecy and vote by secret ballot. The cardinals cast repeated votes until there is a two-thirds majority, and the next pope is selected. The voting process can take an hour or two each time, so there is a lot of waiting while each cardinal fills out his ballot and submits it in an elaborate ritual to ensure there are no election violations, he said. “It’s not like you’re at the edge of the seat, and watching them all do that,” said Cardinal Dolan, who attended the conclave that elected Pope Francis in 2013. He’s bringing a biography of Michelangelo, which felt appropriate, as he will be surrounded by some of the artist’s masterpieces, including “The Last Judgment,” which depicts the second coming of Christ and covers the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. Cardinal Dolan said he had top candidates for pontiff in mind, men whose writing and work he has studied. “You want to see a guy who speaks well, you look for some linguistic ability. It would be very difficult for someone who did not know enough Italian,” he said. “If you don’t know the difference between carbonara and tagliatelle, you’re in trouble. It would be very difficult for somebody who only knows Italian, because you’re also a universal pastor.” As he spoke, he looked down at St. Peter’s Basilica from the roof terrace of the Pontifical North American College. “I think it’ll be longer than last time,” he said, referring to the process that selected Pope Francis, which took two days. He said he had brought 12 packets of peanut butter, thinking that would be enough for him to eat three a day while sequestered. “So you figure that out,” he said on the math. The meetings held before the conclave have been “strenuous,” he said, with “one cardinal after another” getting up to speak. Cardinal Dolan said the cardinals had shared their concerns about what they see as challenges for Christians in Islamic countries; in countries with oppressive governments; in regions without enough Catholic priests; or where religious liberty is suppressed. “Think of the cardinal from Sudan. Think of the cardinals from the Holy Land,” he said. One cardinal was grateful that Francis had traveled all over the world, he said, while another said maybe the next pope should largely stay at the ******** and bring cardinals to meet with him there. “One of the cardinals said, I love Pope Francis, and I am grateful for his 12 years. But we are here to elect the successor of Peter, not the successor of Francis,” he said, referring to St. Peter, the first pope. “That of course is true.
We have to remember that.” The ancient and elaborate rituals of the conclave can be mystifying for those watching from afar. But new cardinals “will also say, we don’t really know the rituals and the protocol, we don’t even know what to wear,” he said. “They’re so honest and they’re so fresh.” After a morning Mass on Wednesday, the cardinals are expected to go back to Casa Santa Marta, unpack and have lunch. The accommodation and cuisine are relatively simple. “The food’s not that good,” Cardinal Dolan said. The process is also extremely secretive, so much so that at the last conclave, even the blinds of Cardinal Dolan’s windows were secured shut so that no one could see in or out. ******** City shuts down, and the cardinals are sequestered, but they have a physician and a confessor available, “if we need help in body or soul,” he said. 25. Classic Outlook will soon be easier to use in Windows 11 Classic Outlook will soon be easier to use in Windows 11 Microsoft will soon make it easier for Windows 11 users to use classic Outlook without switching between apps. According to Windows Latest, the update will start rolling out in mid-May to address user frustration with the new Outlook. Currently, switching between the two Outlook versions requires users to click a toggle in the new Outlook to return to the classic version, which users may find inconvenient. Microsoft acknowledged this feedback and confirmed that, starting mid-May 2025, it’ll minimize the new Outlook when users return to the classic version. The minimized app’s icon will remain visible on the taskbar during the session, and notifications and reminders from the new Outlook will stop. In June 2025, Microsoft will introduce an even ******* improvement. Users will no longer need to use the toggle in the new Outlook. Instead, they can open the classic Outlook app directly, just like any other program, without going through the switching process. Microsoft expects to complete the rollout by late July 2025, making these changes available to all Windows 11 users. This means that, from now on, users can choose their preferred Outlook version without interruptions or needing to switch manually. These changes will likely greatly relieve users who frequently switch between the two versions. Until now, moving between classic Outlook and the new Outlook has interrupted workflow, causing frustration for those who preferred the older app’s familiar interface. The only current switching method is manually clicking the toggle button in the new Outlook to return to the classic version. This can be disruptive and time-consuming, especially for users who need to access different features between the two apps throughout the day. However, it’s unclear whether the new Outlook will continue running in the background and draining system resources or remain in a sleep state when minimized. Microsoft has also encouraged users to try the new Outlook, noting that it continues adding requested features and improvements.
