Disney’s beat-and-raise quarter has analysts upbeat about further gains Disney’s beat-and-raise quarter has analysts upbeat about further gains Disney’s strong quarterly results and full-year guidance raise has analysts giddy at the media giant’s prospects. The company posted fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that exceeded consensus estimates, driven in part by an unexpected uptick in streaming subscribers and upped its full-year guidance. The report sent Disney shares up more than 10%, boosting the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Wednesday’s gain put share on pace for their best day since April 9. Heading into Disney’s earnings release, analysts were closely awaiting the company’s theme parks and streaming results — segments viewed as highly vulnerable to macro weakness. The company managed to post revenue growth across all its segments during the fiscal third quarter. Here are what some of the top analysts on Wall Street said after Disney reported earnings: Barclays reiterates overweight rating and $115 target According to analyst Kannan Venkateshwar, Disney has the least structural risks relative to other media companies — in addition to the largest potential gains from its streaming business. This price target implies 24.8% upside from Tuesday’s close. “The company’s performance in the first half and guidance for the rest of the year should help investors gain more conviction around growth trajectory. … Overall, we continue to believe Disney remains one of the most attractive investments in our coverage universe despite obvious macro exposure.” Bank of America maintains buy rating, $140 price target Analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich noted that Disney’s earnings growth outlook increase is encouraging with recent macro concerns in mind. Her target price of $140 per share implies nearly 52% upside. “Near term catalysts include: 1) profitability inflection in DTC, 2) reacceleration in the Parks business and 3) strong film slate which drives other businesses (DTC, Parks and Consumer Products).” UBS reiterates buy rating, $105 price target Analyst John Hodulik highlighted Disney’s “resilient results,” as well as its 29% year-over-year growth in advertising across its sports segment. “Total revenues grew 7% y/y (UBSe 4%/Street 5%), while segment OI grew 15% to $4.44B (UBSe $4.06B, Street $3.98B).” Goldman Sachs keeps buy rating, $140 target Analyst Michael Ng pointed to outperformance in the company’s experiences division, which was driven by better-than-expected domestic theme park attendance. Ng is bullish on the profitability prospects for Disney, as well as improved studio costs and theme park growth. His price target implies upside of more than 51% from Tuesday’s close. “We are Buy-rated on DIS as we believe the company is a high quality EPS compounder supported by 1) continued progression to scaled long term DTC profitability made possible by wholesale arrangements, bundled offerings, password sharing restrictions and other initiatives; 2) studio performance improvement (from a ******* of under earning) enabled by cost rationalization and organizational restructuring.” Source link #Disneys #beatandraise #quarter #analysts #upbeat #gains Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

La Quimera Reverts To Early Access Launch, Out Now On Steam For $30 La Quimera Reverts To Early Access Launch, Out Now On Steam For $30 La Quimera, the story-driven FPS from the developers formerly known as 4A Games Ukraine, was recently delayed after reviews for the game went live, and now the developers have reverted the game to early access instead of a 1.0 launch. The game is out now on Steam Early Access for $30. Reburn CEO Dmytro Lymar said in a statement, “Though this wasn’t our original plan, as Ukrainian game developers, we’re very familiar with perseverance in the face of tough choices and tougher odds.” As with other early access titles, La Quimera will grow and evolve over time with future updates, the developer said. When the game was originally delayed, the developer said it encountered “some unforeseen challenges” related to La Quimera being the company’s first title as an independent studio. The game is set in the year 2064, a time when most nation states are extinct due to human and natural disasters that caused the collapse of global systems. Against this backdrop, private military companies are thriving, with players taking on the role of a PMC operative fighting through Latin America and battling against other factions. The story was created by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive and Only God Forgives) and E.J.A. Warren. La Quimera screenshots Gallery Reburn is made up of developers who previously worked on the Metro series, which consisted of adaptations of Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro books. ‘What president ever talks like that?’ Biden on Trump’s leadership so far – National ‘What president ever talks like that?’ Biden on Trump’s leadership so far – National In his first post-presidential interview since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, Joe Biden equated the pressure the president is putting on Ukraine to “modern-day appeasement,” a reference to the British government’s pre-Second World War effort to curtail the Nazi’s invasion of Europe. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today program to mark the 80th anniversary of VE-Day (Victory in Europe), the former president said that Trump’s pursuit of Panama, Greenland and Canada has weakened global trade and diplomatic partnerships in the U.S. and spawned a sense of mistrust among its European allies and NATO, which was formed after the Second World War. “What president ever talks like that?” Biden said. “That’s not who we are. We’re about freedom, democracy, opportunity — not about confiscation,” he told the BBC’s Nick Robinson, adding that “Europe is going to lose confidence in the certainty of America and the leadership of America.” Story continues below advertisement Former U.S. president Joe Biden leaves the White House for a day trip to New York City on June 29, 2023, in Washington, D.C. Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images Biden also said it was a “difficult decision” to leave the U.S. presidential race last year, four months out from election day, to make way for former vice-president Kamala Harris to take on Trump. Biden’s mention of appeasement refers to former British prime minister Neville Chamberlain’s efforts in the 1930s to weaken Hitler by offering Germany land to halt the Nazis’ annexation of Europe, which Biden likened to Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine should hand over Crimea to Russia and that parts of the country captured during the conflict should remain under Russian rule. This Is the Easiest Cake for Mother’s Day This Is the Easiest Cake for Mother’s Day For years, Genevieve Ko would make this dessert for her kids. Now that they’re grown, she’s streamlined it for them — and you. The whole point of carrot cake is to enjoy layers of tangy cream cheese frosting.Julia Gartland for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Samantha Seneviratne. By Genevieve Ko Genevieve Ko has baked more than 60 birthday cakes for her kids, including one shaped like a pirate ship. Published May 7, 2025Updated May 7, 2025 On my first day as a line cook in a pastry kitchen, I was tasked with turning lemons into little bowls for housemade sorbet. I angled a sharp paring knife from the edge of a lemon half toward its center, then circled the knife to slice out a cone of seedy yellow flesh. Cupping that emptied half, I scooped out what remained with a metal spoon. Once the glassy sheets of membranes were gone, I had to keep going, gently running the spoon against the pith to create the thinnest possible shell without tearing the peel. That continuous scraping, the gentle pressure to excavate everything inside: That’s what empty nesting has felt like. Somewhere behind my rib cage, some core is being hollowed out, and the rasping feels especially close on occasions like Mother’s Day. When they were young, my kids felt pressure from relatives, teachers and the America around them to uphold the breakfast-in-bed tradition that started in the 1930s, about 15 years after Mother’s Day was declared a national holiday. Aside from the fact that I’m not a breakfast eater, I’m also uninterested in doing twice as many dishes and washing syrup stains out of the duvet cover. I’m not alone — according to a 2017 Zagat poll, only 4 percent of mothers actually want breakfast in bed. But I may be alone in wanting to spend the day cooking. When I was just a year out of college, I realized that I could turn a lifelong love of food into a career and began apprenticing with chefs and a food writer. But, shortly after, I found out I was pregnant with twins, a decade before I’d planned to have kids. For years, on the holiday honoring motherhood, I tried to reclaim the childless trajectory I lost, air-drying duck to roast, slow-simmering fruit into preserves, in a peaceful kitchen. It felt like a selfish act twisted with the perpetual selflessness of nurturing. For the twins’ first birthday, I created my first original baking recipe, a layered cake crammed with grated carrot and sweetened more with applesauce than sugar since it was going to be their inaugural taste of the stuff. They shoved handfuls into their mouths, howled with happiness, and it was then that I understood the joy of motherhood. The simplest way to frost carrot cake is to leave the sides unadorned, but they can be slathered with icing as well.Julia Gartland for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Samantha Seneviratne. Through the years of chasing toddlers with a newborn slung to my chest, playing their favorite yet impossibly boring board game (Life), driving to school, practices and play dates, I spent Mother’s Day laboring alone over the long, hard dishes I loved but couldn’t make for work or home. Now that they’re all in college, all I want is to feed them again, to be crowded against the counter, hearing them laugh and bicker, wiping up mysterious sticky patches. But no one is clinging to my legs anymore, and, apparently, my long “welcome home” hugs come off as pretty desperate. So I try to play it cool, not showing too much excitement when my youngest described craving carrot cake for the cream cheese frosting because, isn’t that the best part? That’s when I knew I’d taught them well and when I started plotting out a recipe that maximizes the frosting-to-cake ratio by baking the batter in a single half-sheet pan. Doing so eliminates the need for multiple cake pans and trying to slice tall rounds into flat layers. Instead, the big rectangle is easily cut into three smaller ones for easy stacking and an impressive tier with plenty of ******* frosting in every forkful. When my (taller-than-me) youngest tasted the frosting and suggested more lemon juice and salt to amplify its tanginess, I tried to not visibly tear up with pride. I was happy, really I was, when they couldn’t stay to eat the cake but had just enough time to bring it to their classmates who “destroyed it.” It’s as it should be. And as the older two graduate from college, now only a few years younger than I was when they were born, I feed them by giving them starter recipes, like this cake, to prepare on their own. Texting recipe links and receiving photos of finished dishes in return don’t fill the home’s new hush, but learning to experience that as progress is its own celebration of motherhood. Conclave to select new pope begins at Sistine Chapel Conclave to select new pope begins at Sistine Chapel Catholic cardinals who will choose the next pope have filed into the Sistine Chapel, before locking themselves away from the world to elect the man they hope can unite a diverse but divided global Church. In a ritual dating back to medieval times, 133 cardinal electors – including Australia’s Ukraine-born Cardinal Mykola Bychok – will take an oath of perpetual secrecy under the gaze of the stern Christ depicted in Michelangelo’s Last Judgement fresco, which adorns the chapel. They will then hold their first ballot looking for a successor to Pope Francis, who died last month. No pope has been elected on the first day of a conclave for centuries and voting could continue for several days before one man receives the necessary two-thirds majority to become the 267th pontiff. There will be only one ballot on Wednesday. Thereafter, there can be as many as four votes a day. The cardinals walked slowly into the chapel, taking part in a solemn Latin chant called the litany of the saints. They beseeched nearly 100 men and women believed to reside in heaven to pray for them as they prepare to make what arguably will be the most momentous decision of their lives. After the cardinals have pronounced their oath, Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the ********’s master of ceremonies, will pronounce the Latin command “Extra omnes!” (Everyone out!), telling all those not involved in the gathering to leave. The chapel’s heavy wooden doors will then slam shut. The only expected signal from the cardinals during the conclave will come in the form of smoke from a chimney atop the chapel, as the clerics burn their ballots. ****** smoke will mark an inconclusive vote; white smoke and the pealing of bells will signal that the 1.4-billion-member Church has a new leader. At a Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday before entering the conclave, the cardinals prayed that God would help them find a pope who would exercise “watchful care” over the world. In a sermon, Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re told his peers they must set aside “every personal consideration” in choosing the new pontiff and keep in mind “only … the good of the Church and of humanity”. Cardinals in recent days have offered different assessments of what they are looking for in the next pope. While some have called for continuity with Francis’ vision of greater openness and reform, others have said they want to turn the clock back and embrace traditions. Many have indicated they want a more predictable, measured pontificate. A record 133 cardinals from 70 countries were expected to enter the Sistine Chapel, up from 115 from 48 nations in the last conclave in 2013 – growth that reflects Francis’ efforts to extend the reach of the Church. No clear favourite has emerged, although Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and ********* Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle are considered the front-runners. However, if it quickly becomes obvious that neither can win, votes are likely to shift to other contenders, with the electors possibly coalescing around geography, doctrinal affinity or common languages. Among other potential candidates are France’s Jean-Marc Aveline, Hungary’s Peter Erdo, American Robert Prevost and Italy’s Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Re, who is 91 and cannot take part in the conclave, suggested the cardinals should look for a pope who respected the Church’s diversity. “Unity does not mean uniformity, but a firm and profound communion in diversity,” he said in his sermon. The average length of the last 10 conclaves was just over three days and none went on for more than five days. The last conclave, in 2013, lasted just two days. The cardinals will be looking to wrap things up quickly again this time to avoid giving the impression they are divided or that the Church is adrift. Some 80 per cent of the cardinal electors were appointed by Francis, increasing the possibility that his successor will in some way continue his progressive policies despite strong pushback from traditionalists. Among their considerations will be whether they should seek a pope from the global south where congregations are growing, as they did in 2013 with Francis, from Argentina, hand back the reins to Europe or even pick a first US pope. Genshin Impact to start verifying US users’ ages Genshin Impact to start verifying US users’ ages Genshin Impact is set to start verifying US users’ ages Make sure to check in before July 2025 to get verified Those who aren’t able to could see their accounts deleted Genshin Impact players in the United States will have to verify their age or face losing access to their account in MiHoYo’s popular open-world RPG. With the changes required by law, according to a recent announcement by MiHoYo, players will need to verify by July 18th 2025, to avoid consequences. What kind of consequences are these? Well, for starters, players will see their accounts deleted, friends and chat records deleted, and won’t receive notifications to verify post-suspension since the account information will now be inaccessible by law. Fortunately, as noted above, you’ve got a few months to actually verify your account. Although it’s not clear how age verification will actually take place and whether it’ll be more complex than a simple ‘pinkie promise’ approach, this is nonetheless a new step in what seems to be legal moves to limit the access of younger players to releases like Genshin Impact. Gacha! You probably don’t need a reminder of how the term gacha originated with gachapon machines, and much like their originator, it’s fair to say these are money-hungry releases. And while a clever player can spend very little, especially compared to the heyday of loot boxes. While it’ll be a welcome change for many players and parents of younger gamers, it may prove to be a bit awkward for those not regularly jumping in. So if you think you might end up going on an extended hiatus in Genshin Impact, you’ll want to check in soon and get your age verified before the deadline is up. If you’re thinking of jumping back into Genshin Impact to do so, don’t forget to check out our list of Genshin Impact codes for May of this year! Trump White House fires Biden-appointed vice chair of NTSB Trump White House fires Biden-appointed vice chair of NTSB The vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, who was appointed to the post by President Joe Biden late last year, has been fired, a senior White House official confirmed to CBS News. Alvin Brown’s ouster happened Tuesday. Brown, a Democrat who was the first African American elected mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, was appointed by Biden as the NTSB’s vice chair in December. Brown joined the five-person board earlier in 2024, being sworn in on the same day as Todd Inman, a Republican who was also appointed by Biden. The NTSB is an independent agency with board members appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate to serve five-year terms. The president designates the chair and vice chair for three-year terms in those roles. The chair requires a separate Senate confirmation. Brown’s firing comes amid other Trump administration dismissals of other Democratic members of independent agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and National Labor Relations Board. Alvin Brown attends an investigative hearing into the blowout of an exit door plug on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 in Washington, Aug. 6, 2024. Bryan Olin Dozier/Anadolu via Getty Images The move leaves the NTSB with four board members — Inman along with Chair Jennifer Homendy, Michael Graham and Thomas Chapman — who were all appointed by President Trump during his first term in office. Homendy was appointed as the board’s chair by Biden. The NTSB investigates all fatal general aviation accidents, including commercial accidents and incidents, as well as significant accidents across the various modes of transportation as well as pipeline accidents. The board does not have regulatory authority. Instead, it determines the probable cause of those accidents and makes safety recommendations to avoid similar ones in the future. The board is currently investigating a host of aviation accidents, including January’s deadly midair collision over Washington, D.C., multiple fatal small plane crashes and last year’s blowout of an Alaska Airlines door panel midflight. The NTSB declined to comment, directing inquiries to the White House. Brown’s departure was first reported by Reuters. Gabrielle Ake contributed to this report. A 20-cent ‘wonder drug’ is being studied as a colon *******-stopping supplement, and it looks promising A 20-cent ‘wonder drug’ is being studied as a colon *******-stopping supplement, and it looks promising Metformin is the most widely prescribed diabetes drug in the world. Scientists have noticed that people who take it may also get some colon ******* prevention benefits. Early research gives hints about how it might be used to help in colon ******* treatment. A cheap, widely-prescribed diabetes drug that some doctors have called a “wonder drug” may hold promise as a colon-*******-stopping supplement. Scientists who presented at the American Association for ******* Research conference in Chicago last week are studying how metformin — the most popular diabetes medication worldwide — interacts with tough-to-treat colon ******* cells. Their research is still early and ongoing. “Metformin seems like it could have a really interesting supplemental approach to therapy,” Holli Loomans-Kropp, a gastrointestinal ******* prevention researcher at The Ohio State University, who is leading the ongoing study, told Business Insider. “We’re opening up some doors to what this could do.” Previous research has highlighted how people taking metformin for diabetes have lower colon ******* rates, suggesting the drug may be doing something protective to help prevent ******* from developing. This new study is one of the first to look at whether metformin can actually fight back against colon ******* cells once the disease develops. Based on what Loomans-Kropp and her team have seen so far in cell culture dishes, metformin looks like it could become a helpful “supplement” to certain ******* treatment regimens in the future. It wouldn’t be potent enough to treat ******* on its own, but could be used alongside other treatments. She is especially excited about what it might do for a common type of colon ******* with a mutated KRAS gene, which tends to be very tough to treat. Her work, if successful, would require additional positive results in animals and then in people to become a prescription that oncologists can reliably use in the clinic. A drug that changes how the body uses energy Metformin stimulates a key cellular cleanup process called autophagy. Exercise can also induce autophagy, but in a slightly different way.Halfpoint Images/Getty Images One of the big benefits Loomans-Kropp sees to studying metformin for colon ******* treatment is a practical one — it’s a drug that’s already widely accessible and affordable. “I always like to ask the question: are there medications or agents that we already know, that are already used, that we have safety/toxicity profiles for, that we can then repurpose for something else?” Metformin has been studied and used by millions of patients worldwide. And it’s cheap — an off-patent, generic drug that costs about 10 to 20 cents per pill. It’s sometimes referred to as a “wonder drug” by doctors for the beneficial effects it may have on patients who take it, beyond blood sugar control. Scientists have studied it for heart health, ******* prevention, and dementia. Metformin works for diabetes because it changes the way the body processes and produces sugar. Some scientists suspect it may hold promise for improving aging for a similar reason: because it regulates how the body uses energy, and encourages more self-eating (autophagy), much like exercise or fasting. Perhaps metformin could also inhibit the ways that colon ******* finds energy to grow and develop. “If metformin maybe can be used to redirect or change how the cell uses energy, which then ultimately changes how it divides and how it proliferates, this could be a mechanism to exploit,” Loomans-Kropp said. It’s this same energy-shifting mechanism that has longevity researchers excited about metformin as a tool for disease prevention. Dr. Nir Barzilai, a leading longevity researcher who suspects metformin may be beneficial for healthy aging, says he thinks metformin may be a “suitable” option for ******* prevention. When it comes to fighting *******, he agrees with Loomans-Kropp that more study is needed. “Let the science lead,” he told Business Insider in an email. Loomans-Kropp is hoping that if these initial ******* cell results are successful, she can begin testing metformin as colon ******* treatment on animals within a year. Diablo 4’s Berserk Crossover Is A Huge Wasted Opportunity
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Diablo 4’s Berserk Crossover Is A Huge Wasted Opportunity Diablo 4’s Berserk Crossover Is A Huge Wasted Opportunity When Blizzard announced a Berserk crossover for Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal, the franchise’s first-ever external IP collaboration, it was hard not to be excited. The late Kentaro Miura’s legendary manga series is a seminal work whose influence can be seen in any game with oversized swords and a penchant for over-the-top violence. The two franchises are both steeped in blood, gore, and demons–practically making them a match made in dark fantasy heaven. Unfortunately, Diablo 4’s Berserk crossover is largely a disappointment, one that doesn’t capitalize on the overlap between its two franchises. Far from honoring Berserk, it mostly just feels like a cash grab, an excuse for players to potentially spend well over $100 on cosmetics and nothing more. One is the free set of rewards tied to Diablo 4’s new Reliquary battle pass system. Elite enemies have a chance to drop Behelits, which can then be used to unlock a handful of freebies in the Berserk Reliquary. The rewards include a Brand of Sacrifice death marker and tattoo, as well as a cosmetic backpiece and mount trophy. Unlocking the four rewards then unlocks a free Berserk-themed nameplate. Players will need 400 hundred Behelits to acquire all of the rewards, and while that won’t take too long (at max level, players are killing elite enemies by the dozen at any given moment), it does still feel like a grind without any real depth or strategy. It’s just busy work. The real bulk of the crossover is in the in-game shop. Blizzard is offering four different armor sets, along with a **** bundle, for 2,800 Platinum (Diablo 4’s premium currency) each. A mount bundle is also available for 2,500. Even factoring in the “free” bonus Platinum included in the larger bundles on the in-game shop, buying all of the event’s cosmetics comes out to over $120. That is a whole lot of cash. Pricey cosmetics are nothing new (Blizzard has been selling various cosmetics in Diablo 4 for around the same price since the game’s launch), but it feels especially egregious here. All of the items a player would most want, particularly Guts’ iconic Berserker armor and Dragon Slayer sword, are locked behind a pricey paywall. Combined with the fact that this is the first season Blizzard is only offering 200 Platinum, down from 700, in the Diablo 4 battle pass, and the excitement around this collab has withered faster than Griffith locked in a dungeon. It wouldn’t be so bad if there was more for players not keen on spending money to do and unlock. The cosmetic armor sets themselves are meticulously detailed and look fantastic–Blizzard’s artists have done great work recreating Miura’s legendary designs in-game. Skull Knight and the Berserker armor in particular look incredible, though it would have been nice to see Berserk’s most prominent heroine, Casca, featured in the cosmetic armor set lineup as well. The real issue here is that with the actual in-game event being practically non-existent and the free rewards being so disappointing, the entire crossover, the first in the franchise’s history outside one with Blizzard’s own Warcraft universe, just feels like a Dragon Slayer-sized missed opportunity. All of Diablo 4’s Berserk premium cosmetics. What’s even stranger is one doesn’t even have to look far to see what could have been. As mentioned earlier, Diablo Immortal, Blizzard’s free-to-play mobile game, is also crossing over with Berserk. The approach of the two games couldn’t be more different. Diablo Immortal’s Berserk crossover includes not only new cosmetics, but actual, exciting in-game events. It features a boss battle against the menacing Nosferatu Zodd alongside unique rewards. It introduces a new Behelit-themed Legendary gem that grants players new powers and mechanics to play around. Players can even try to survive the most infamous moment in all of Berserk, the Eclipse, one where armies of demons descend on players hoping to turn them into sacrifices to dark gods. Why this level of creativity is found in the free-to-play Diablo Immortal and not Diablo 4 is anyone’s guess. The Dragon Slayer appearing in Diablo 4 as a Legendary or Unique item could have been an exciting addition, one that might have changed up the game’s meta in a potentially fun and exciting way. A limited-time in-game event where players are marked with the Brand of Sacrifice and have to fight to survive would be right at home in Blizzard’s premium ARPG. Heck, just reskin Diablo 4’s endgame Infernal Hordes activity, rename it Eclipse-mode, and call it a day. It would, at least, be something. Is Blizzard’s Diablo 4 team stretched so thin that having enemies occasionally drop yet another currency is all it could come up with for its first ever crossover? Players have complained about Diablo 4’s upcoming content roadmap and how it seems lacking. The fact that there is so little to Diablo 4’s Berserk crossover just seems to prove the point. There is no meat or substance here. Far from making players excited about Diablo 4, it sours the idea of future crossovers, which just so happens to be one of the few things potentially worth getting excited about listed on the game’s 2025 roadmap. It remains to be seen what IP Diablo 4 will cross over with next or what it will entail; according to the roadmap, it will come between September and December of this year. But Blizzard’s lack of effort and creativity here doesn’t inspire much confidence. Berserk and Diablo 4 should have been a perfect pairing. Instead, it’s just a reminder of what these IP collabs often are–a chance to make a buck. EU to unveil next steps in U.S. tariff countermeasures on Thursday EU to unveil next steps in U.S. tariff countermeasures on Thursday Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, speaks to reporters in Singapore on May 7, 2025, after signing of the EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement (DTA), a landmark initiative enhancing digital economic cooperation between the European Union and Singapore. Roslan Rahman | Afp | Getty Images The European Union’s executive arm will announce further details of its proposed countermeasures to U.S. tariffs in a Thursday update, European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said Wednesday. “Tomorrow we will announce next preparatory steps, both in [the] area of possible rebalancing measures and also in the areas important for further discussions,” Sefcovic said during a news conference in Singapore on Wednesday. Sefcovic said the EU continued to “prepare for any scenario” if current trade talks fail. “Negotiations clearly come first but not at any cost,” he told reporters, adding that the bloc’s “lazer-focused approach” was still to find a negotiated solution with Washington. “We are working very closely with our member states, consulting industry, talking to our key stakeholders to ensure we are ready for whatever comes next,” Sefcovic said. Trump initially imposed a 20% “reciprocal” tariff on all goods coming from the EU but on April 9 paused the measures for 90 days for negotiations, lowering the duty to 10% until that time. A 25% tariff on foreign cars as well as steel and aluminum imports remains in place. The EU has currently paused its initial set of retaliatory measures — a response to the metals duties — which target around 21 billion euros ($24.1 billion) worth of U.S. goods, chiefly with a tariff rate of 25%. Trump administration to announce U.S. will call Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf Trump administration to announce U.S. will call Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. Stocktrek | Photodisc | Getty Images DUBAI, Unites Arab Emirates — President Donald Trump’s administration reportedly plans to announce that the U.S. will officially call the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf or Gulf of Arabia, a move that would be welcomed by Arab Gulf leaders and likely draw anger from Iran. The development was reported by The Associated Press, citing two unnamed U.S. officials, and is set to be timed for Trump’s Middle East visit on May 13 to 16, during which time he will make stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The name of the body of water — a major shipping lane sitting between Iran’s southern coast and the coastlines of Arab countries Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Qatar — has long been a point of contention, with several Arab states having spent years pushing for a change from Persian to Arabian Gulf. The area has been most widely called the Persian Gulf since roughly the 1700s, though it’s referred to as the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Arabia in many Arab countries. Read more CNBC politics coverage Google maps labels the region “Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf),” while Apple Maps and major U.S. news outlets, including NBC News and The Associated Press, call it the Persian Gulf. U.S. Central Command in its publications and statements uses the name Gulf of Arabia, while the State Department and CIA have used Persian Gulf. Iran, home of the former Persian empire, threatened in 2012 to sue Google for not naming the body of water altogether on its maps. The White House did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment. The Trump administration has been engaged in indirect talks with Iranian officials over Iran’s nuclear program. Clippy resurrected as AI assistant — project turns infamous Microsoft mascot into LLM interface Clippy resurrected as AI assistant — project turns infamous Microsoft mascot into LLM interface If you’re old enough to remember when 8MB thumb drives hit the scene, you’ll probably remember Clippy, Microsoft’s digital writing assistant. Clippy lived in the bottom corner of Microsoft Office from 1996 to 2003, but now he can return to your desktop with a new life as a mouthpiece for AI, thanks to a new project from software engineer Felix Rieseberg. This odd couple of 90’s UI design and the modern-day AI craze provides potential users the ability to set up any locally installed LLM and use Clippy as its mouthpiece. Many of the most popular publicly-available LLMs will function with Clippy, with one-click installation supported for the newest from Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Qwen. Clippy’s original art and animations are joined by a Windows 98-styled chat and settings window. On installation, Clippy silently cycles through animations while the program automatically downloads Google’s Gemma3-1B model. Once paired with an LLM, the Clippy-bot approximates the original Clippy’s tone thanks to a lengthy prompt instruction that seeks to disguise the model in use. Users are able to edit or replace this starting prompt to get their most Clippy-esque experience (or to give your Clippy more of his highly-memed snark). (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Rieseberg, creator of new Clippy, refers to the program as “a love letter and homage to the late, great Clippy,” as well as Microsoft’s 90s visual aesthetic. He calls the app a piece of “software art,” or, if you don’t like it, “software satire.” There is certainly something to be said about the relationship between an artist and programmer designing a quirky writing aide character, and a chatbot later told to attempt to emulate that work — though the list of people waxing philosophical about Clippy likely doesn’t extend far beyond this author. We’ve seen Clippy replacements before, but this new-and-improved paperclip doesn’t require access to a paid tier of ChatGPT, nor does it seek to modernize Clippy’s look to match Windows’ newer design sensibilities. This is the Clippy you know and love (?): a more 90’s-looking blend of old and new computing sensibilities. The Clippy Desktop Assistant is available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux via the project’s website, with a deeper look behind the curtain available on Github. While it’s not likely to revolutionize any desktop workflows, this new Clippy stands at the ready for those happy few with one foot in the vector-graphics of the 90s… and the other in the AI-present. Israeli strikes on Gaza restaurant and market kill 20, medics say Israeli strikes on Gaza restaurant and market kill 20, medics say At least 20 Palestinians have been killed in two Israeli strikes on a crowded restaurant and market on the same street in Gaza City, medics say. Graphic videos posted on social media showed bodies slumped over tables at the Thailandy restaurant, in the northern Rimal neighbourhood, which had recently been operating as a community kitchen. Footage from the marketplace about 60m (196ft) away showed a small child with a rucksack lying dead in the street. The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports. Earlier, local hospitals said at least 59 people had been killed in attacks since Tuesday night, most of them at two schools serving as shelters for displaced families. Women and children were among 33 people who were killed when the UN-run Abu Humeisa school in Bureij refugee camp, in central Gaza, was bombed twice on Tuesday, according to the ******-run Civil Defence agency. The Israeli military said it struck “terrorists who were operating within a ****** command-and-control centre”. The military has not yet commented on a strike on the al-Karama school in the eastern Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City on Wednesday morning, which the Civil Defence said killed another 15 people. Eight members of one family also died when their home in the southern city of Khan Younis was hit, the agency added. It comes amid international condemnation of Israel’s plans to expand and intensify its ground offensive against ****** after 19 months of war. Israeli officials have said the plans include seizing all of the territory indefinitely, forcibly displacing Palestinians to the south, and taking over aid distribution with private companies. Israel cut off all humanitarian aid to Gaza on 2 March and resumed its offensive two weeks later after the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, saying it was putting pressure on ****** to release its remaining hostages. The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy ****** in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. At least 52,653 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s ******-run health ministry. Former Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz feels for ex-teammates but hopes to pile on pain Former Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz feels for ex-teammates but hopes to pile on pain Collingwood forward Lachie Schultz knows Fremantle better than most, and after a dinner with his ex-teammates, he’s expecting a fired-up Dockers at Optus Stadium on Thursday night. The Dockers are looking to rebound from a horror 61-point belting at the hands of St Kilda last weekend that has led to serious questions around their premiership credentials and coach Justin Longmuir. Schultz — who played 90 games for the Dockers before being traded to the Magpies in 2023 — said he expected his former side to bounce back. “I’m still close with a lot of the guys there and it’s disappointing seeing them get hounded all week after the performance they put up at the weekend,” he said. “I have no doubt they’ll bounce back, I know them very well and I know that’s what they’ll be planning this week and looking forward to embracing that challenge. “I speak to a lot of them every day, I caught up with a few of them last night for dinner and we speak everything, whether it’s life or footy. And they’re in a good place mentally and they rally together in times like this, as does everyone. I still love them dearly and wish them all the best but hopefully we can get the win.” Collingwood have gone a conservative approach as they come off a five-day break and a trip to Perth, resting defender Brayden Maynard, forward Jordan De Goey and veteran Scott Pendlebury, while forward Brody Mihocek is out with injury. Camera IconSport AFL. The Collingwood Football Club train at Optus Stadium. Lachie Schultz. Jackson Flindell Credit: Jackson Flindell/Jackson Flindell / The West Aust They’ve brought in Jeremy Howe, Ed Allan, Lachlan Sullivan and Oleg Markov to replace the star quartet. Schultz said the undermanned Collingwood was more than capable of doing the job to get the win. “There’s never a week where you don’t feel like you can’t win,” he said. “There’s no reason why we can’t go in tomorrow feeling like we’re the better team and why we can’t win. “We’ve planned this week; we’re looking forward to the challenge. It’s not going to be easy, but it never is.” It is a rare foray for Collingwood into WA and Schultz said it was different from when he travelled every second week at Fremantle. “When you’re travelling every second week you get used to it whereas now it’s a little bit exciting to get on the road with the boys,” he said. Jim Cramer Says ‘It Was Very Funny’ Jim Cramer Says ‘It Was Very Funny’ We recently published an article titled Jim Cramer Says AI Is Back & Discusses These 10 Stocks. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE:CRM) stands against the other stocks. In a recent appearance on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street, Jim Cramer commented on how market sentiment towards AI appeared to be changing. “Yeah look, this is a moment where, if you have AI, we are now saying it’s good,” he said. “Remember we were sick of AI for a while and now AI’s back,” Cramer added. He also commented on the current tensions between the US and China regarding AI and overall trade. The US has restricted sales of advanced AI chips to China, and to Cramer, the current environment “feels so much like Russia and United States from the Khrushchev time on, it really does.” He added that US technology was superior to the ********, and when co-host David Faber pointed out that China was pushing out a lot of STEM graduates, Cramer replied: “We’re four times smarter than they are. Our schools. Four times better.” The US AI chip sanctions have included restricting all but 18 countries from being able to acquire the latest AI chips. The laws were introduced under the Biden administration and Cramer’s been their critic. When Faber asked him to explain the rules, called ‘Diffusion Rules,’ Cramer outlined: “Okay so Biden picked 18 friends. 18 friendly nations that were allowed to get all the chips that they . . and then there was the next group, which was the not so friendly, which when look at, is a lot of EU countries which I always thought were friendly because of NATO, that kind of thing. . .Iceland, Mexico, not in there. And then there’s just the enemies list.” Cramer added rather cryptically: “And some people now feel that they’re going to offer licensing for a country which would really be bad. Worse than what Biden did.” He added: “No they have got to get that changed because. . .if you go check, Jensen Huang did this . . .he did this huge tour, all around the world, to all these countries that are basically going to be denied and that are not friendly.” As for the impact of tariffs on economic growth, Cramer believes: “Well, we gotta see, this next quarter is the quarter where, everyone is so concerned.” To make our list of the stocks that Jim Cramer talked about, we listed down the stocks he mentioned during CNBC’s Squawk on the Street aired on May 1st. Story Continues For these stocks, we also mentioned the number of hedge fund investors. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 373.4% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 218 percentage points (see more details here). Salesforce, Inc. (CRM): Among Billionaire Ray Dalio’s Bridgewater’s Stock Picks with Huge Upside Potential A customer service team in an office setting using the company’s Customer 360 platform to communicate with customers. Number of Hedge Fund Holders In Q4 2024: 162 Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE:CRM) is a software company that enables businesses to manage their customer relationships. It’s part of a broader enterprise software group that has been recommended by Cramer recently due to its little exposure to tariff uncertainties. Specifically for Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE:CRM), Cramer’s previous remarks have asserted that the firm’s recent share price drop is unwarranted. Here are his latest thoughts: “When Davidson downgraded Salesforce to a Sell, uh, it was very funny, because I asked Benioff, and he goes, Davidson? Who are they?” Overall CRM ranks 5th on our list of the stocks Jim Cramer recently discussed. While we acknowledge the potential of CRM as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter time frame. There is an AI stock that went up since the beginning of 2025, while popular AI stocks lost around 25%. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than CRM but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about this cheapest AI stock. Figma launches premium Figma Make ‘vibe-coding’ AI software designer Figma launches premium Figma Make ‘vibe-coding’ AI software designer From left, Steven Levy, Wired editor at large, and Dylan Field, co-founder and CEO of Figma, speak onstage at Wired’s The Big Interview event in San Francisco on Dec. 3, 2024. Kimberly White | Wired | Getty Images Design software startup Figma on Wednesday debuted an artificial intelligence feature to automate the process of building websites and applications. The new feature, called Figma Make, is the company’s response to the rise of “vibe-coding” tools, which turn a short written description into the source code necessary for a website. Google and Microsoft have both touted their own “vibe-coding” tools this year. OpenAI has also entered the space, holding acquisition talks with one startup in the space, Windsurf, and reaching out to another called Cursor on multiple occasions, CNBC reported. The move might draw additional business to Figma, which confidentially filed for an initial public offering last month. Many of today’s “vibe-coding” products offer a free tier for light use before requesting payment. Figma Make will only be available to those with full seats that start at $16 per person per month when purchased annually. The company is beta-testing the feature with those users. People with premium subscriptions likely work for companies that store font sizes, color combinations and other design assets in Figma. Over time, the new feature will be able to create designs that adhere to those design systems. Figma’s new tool relies on Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model. For those who don’t want to start from scratch, Figma Make can alternatively accept Figma design files as an input and generate code that approximates them. Third-party products such as Vercel’s v0 and StackBlitz’s Bolt.new offer similar capability but can’t inherit existing design systems. Like many other “vibe-coding” programs, Figma Make presents a chat box to ask for and receive adjustments of drafts it comes up with. But sometimes a simple fix such as a font change is all that’s necessary. Drop-down menus for specific elements allow for quick alterations, meaning that there’s no need to consult the AI model again and wait for a response. Customers who received early access to Figma Make got it to craft video games, a note-taking app and a personalized calendar, a spokesperson said. That doesn’t mean there’s no place for designers inside companies with the advent of AI. “The more time has gone on, the more that I’m confident in a designer’s role — and believe that it’s going to be one of the critical roles in bulding software in the future,” Dylan Field, Figma’s co-founder and CEO, said in conversation recently with Garry Tan, president and CEO of Silicon Valley startup accelerator Y Combinator. Also on Wednesday, Figma said it was beginning to test Figma Sites, another feature that requires full seats. It can convert designs into working websites. Support for AI code generation will follow in the next few weeks, Figma said. Cardinals begin conclave to elect new pope in majesty of Sistine Chapel Cardinals begin conclave to elect new pope in majesty of Sistine Chapel Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu attends the Holy Mass, celebrated for the election of the new pope, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, in St. Peter’s Basilica, at the ********, May 7, 2025. Murad Sezer | Reuters Catholic cardinals who will choose the next pope were locked behind the heavy wood doors of the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday, sequestered from the world to elect the man they hope can unite a diverse but divided global Church. In a ritual dating back to medieval times, 133 cardinal electors walked slowly into the chapel before taking an oath of perpetual secrecy under the gaze of the stern Christ depicted in Michelangelo’s Last Judgement fresco, which adorns the chapel. Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the ********’s master of ceremonies, then pronounced the Latin command “Extra omnes!” (Everyone out!), telling all those not involved in the conclave to leave. The chapel’s doors were slammed shut, allowing the cardinals to hold their first ballot to look for a successor to Pope Francis, who died last month. Faithful watch a giant screen displaying images of Diego Giovanni Ravelli, Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, closing the doors of the Sistine chapel as the conclave to elect a new Pope starts, at St Peter’s Square in The ********, on May 7, 2025. Andreas Solaro | Afp | Getty Images No pope has been elected on the first day of a conclave for centuries and voting could continue for several days before one man receives the necessary two-thirds majority to become the 267th pontiff. There will be only one ballot on Wednesday. Thereafter, there can be as many as four votes a day. During a formal procession into the Sistine Chapel, the cardinals beseeched nearly 100 men and women believed to reside in heaven to pray for them as they prepare to make the momentous decision. ‘Watchful care’ over the world At a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday before entering the conclave, the cardinals prayed that God would help them find a pope who would exercise “watchful care” over the world. People watch a screen in Saint Peter’s Square showing Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel, on the first day of the conclave to elect the next pope, as seen from Rome, Italy, May 7, 2025. Kevin Coombs | Reuters In a sermon, Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re told his peers they must set aside “every personal consideration” in choosing the new pontiff and keep in mind “only … the good of the Church and of humanity”. In recent days, cardinals have offered different assessments of what they are looking for in the next pope. While some have called for continuity with Francis’ vision of greater openness and reform, others have said they want to turn the clock back and embrace traditions. Many have indicated they want a more predictable, measured pontificate. A record 133 cardinals from 70 countries were expected to enter the Sistine Chapel, up from 115 from 48 nations in the last conclave in 2013 – growth that reflects efforts by Francis during his 12-year reign to extend the reach of the Church. No clear favourite has emerged, although Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and ********* Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle are considered the front-runners. A general view taken from the cupola of St Peter’s basilica shows St Peter’s square and Via della Conciliazione, in The ******** on May 3, 2025. Firefighters installed the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel on May 2, 2025 which will emit white smoke to signal the election of a new pope as preparations proceed just five days before cardinals gather for the conclave. Dimitar Dilkoff | Afp | Getty Images However, if it quickly becomes obvious that neither can win, votes are likely to shift to other contenders, with the electors possibly coalescing around geography, doctrinal affinity or common languages. Among other potential candidates are France’s Jean-Marc Aveline, Hungary’s Peter Erdo, American Robert Prevost and Italy’s Pierbattista Pizzaballa. The cardinal electors are all aged under 80. Re, who cannot take part in the conclave as he is 91, suggested the cardinals should look for a pope who respected the Church’s diversity. “Unity does not mean uniformity, but a firm and profound communion in diversity,” he said in his sermon. The average length of the last 10 conclaves was just over three days and none went on for more than five days. The last conclave, which picked Francis in 2013, lasted just two days. The cardinals will be looking to wrap things up quickly again this time to avoid giving the impression they are divided or that the Church is adrift. Some 80% of the cardinal electors were appointed by Francis, increasing the possibility that his successor will in some way continue his progressive policies, despite strong pushback from traditionalists. Among their considerations will be whether they should seek a pope from the global South where congregations are growing, as they did in 2013 with Francis, from Argentina, hand back the reins to Europe or even pick a first U.S. pope. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Alphabet and Apple shares sunk Wednesday after Eddy Cue, Apple’s services chief, said he believes that AI search engines will eventually replace standard search engines like Google, according to Bloomberg. Cue said he expects to add the artificial intelligence services from OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic as search options in Apple’s Safari browser in the future, according to the report. The Apple executive was testifying in a federal court in Washington as part of the Justice Department’s lawsuit against Alphabet. Last year, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that Google had illegally dominated ad-tech markets, and now the judge is looking to determine what penalties or actions should be taken against the search company. One major focus on the case is Google’s practice of paying platform providers like Apple to become the default search engine. The lawsuit and any potential remedies threaten Google’s lucrative advertising business, and Alphabet shares sunk more than 7% in trading on Wednesday. Cue’s comments cast doubt on the long-term stability of the relationship. The Apple executive said that searches on Safari declined for the first time in April, which Cue attributed to the rise of people using AI, according to the report. AMD CEO Lisa Su warns against strict U.S. chip controls AMD CEO Lisa Su warns against strict U.S. chip controls Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su said China is a “large opportunity” market for the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industry even as export controls and evolving tariff plans loom over the world’s second-largest economy. “There should be a balance between export controls for national security as well as ensuring that we get the widest possible adoption of our technology,” Su told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Wednesday. “That’s a good thing for U.S. jobs in the U.S. economy.” She added that U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and widespread adoption is the primary objective and a “really great position for us to be in.” Su said there is a “balance to be played between” restricting and providing access to chips. The comments come on the heels of the company’s fiscal first-quarter results. AMD topped earnings and expectations and issued strong guidance, but said it would see a $1.5 billion hit this year from China export controls. Last month, the company said it would incur up to $800 million in costs from shipping its MI308 products to China and other countries. The U.S. government has cracked down on chip shipments to China in recent years, restricting the ***** of more advanced AI processors to China that could be used to improve military capabilities and eat away at U.S. dominance. President Donald Trump’s evolving tariff policies have added more turbulence to the sector in recent weeks, and many investors are combing for signs of demand pressure. While AMD would “prefer a more certain environment,” Su said that the company is working to move manufacturing to the U.S. She added that the impact from tariffs on its portfolio is a minor blip and that the company saw “robust” sales in April. “We’ve learned to become very agile through all of the things that have happened to the semiconductor supply chain, and we’re going to continue to watch all of these trends very carefully and make sure that we react appropriately going forward,” she said. Other Ai chipmaking CEO have also called attention to the impact of chip restrictions in a rapidly expanding AI market. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC’s Jon Fortt on Tuesday that getting pushed out of the the country would be a “tremendous loss.” WATCH: AMD CEO Lisa Su: Chip export controls are a headwind but we still see growth opportunity Source link #AMD #CEO #Lisa #warns #strict #U.S #chip #controls Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
