The retro compilation will be released digitally on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC on June 16, with physical editions shipping later in 2025. Three physical editions of the trilogy will be released, ranging from a standard $39.99 edition to a $199.99 ‘Tail Time’ collector’s edition. The $39.99 Standard Edition is available on all formats and contains the game on a physical disc or cartridge (with the PC version containing a Steam key). The $74.99 Classic Edition contains the game plus a retro-style box designed to look like a PS1 game, as well as a Steelbook, a double-sided poster and a soundtrack selection CD. Finally, the $199.99 Tail Time Edition contains everything in the Classic Edition (with the soundtrack selection CD replaced with the full CD soundtrack), as well as a 36″ inflatable Gex, a 7″ Gex statue, Gex trading cards, a Remote Pin and a special collector’s box with artwork by Final Fantasy illustrator Yoshitaka Amano. Gex Trilogy contains all three games in the Gex series of Crystal Dynamics action platformers released during the PS1 era. The games are being released via Limited Run’s Carbon Engine, a development tool that helps create emulation-based ports of classic games for modern hardware. According to Limited Run, Gex Trilogy adds save state and rewind options for all three games, as well as new widescreen support for the second and third games. It also adds a Music Player, a Media Player with promotional material and artwork, and a new video interview with Dana Gould, the comedian who voiced Gex in the North American versions of the game (in the *** he was voiced by Leslie Phillips and Danny John-Jules). The first game, Gex, was a 2D platformer released on the PS1, Saturn, 3DO and PC and saw the titular gecko travelling through the Media Dimension, exploring five themed TV channels in an attempt to defeat the evil overlord Rez. The sequel Gex: Enter the Gecko was released on PS1, N64 and PC and shifted the gameplay to a 3D platform engine, with Rez once again travelling through TV-based worlds taking such themes as children’s cartoons, sci-fi shows and Kung Fu movies. Finally, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko was released on PS1 and N64 and has Gex returning on the Media Dimension one more time to rescue his (human) girlfriend Agent Xtra. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Review – Gaming Respawn The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Review – Gaming Respawn CCG writes – “Overall, Oblivion Remastered is a mixed bag. While the general stability enhancements are very welcome, the new graphical style may prove divisive to fans of the original. Morally, this is obviously a game meant only for mature audiences. Pinterest Q1 earnings report 2025 Pinterest Q1 earnings report 2025 Bill Ready, CEO of Pinterest, rings the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on May 15, 2024. Brendan McDermid | Reuters Pinterest shares rose 10% in extended trading Thursday after the company reported first-quarter earnings and provided better-than-expected guidance. Here’s how the company did, compared to analysts’ consensus estimates from LSEG: Revenue: $855 million vs. $847 million expected Earnings per share: $0.23 cents Adj. vs. $0.26 cents expected The social media company said second-quarter sales should come in the range of $960 million to $980 million, which at the midpoint is higher than analysts expectations of $966 million. Pinterest had 570 million monthly active users in the first quarter, ahead of Wall Street estimates of 565 million. First quarter sales stemming from the U.S. and Canada came in at $663 million, missing analysts estimates of $664 million. Its first-quarter Europe revenue was $147 million, topping analysts projections of $141 million. Pinterest logged $172 million in first quarter adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBIDTA, which was higher than the $164 million that Wall Street was expecting. First quarter EBIDTA margin was 20% compared to analysts expectations of 19.4%. The company recorded $1.52 in first quarter global average revenue per user, which was in line with analysts estimates. “As the macroeconomic and digital ad landscape evolves, our strategy and consistent execution has made Pinterest more resilient than ever,” Pinterest CEO Bill Ready said in a statement. “The fundamentals in the business are strong and we’re continuing to see healthy growth.” Pinterest was the latest online advertising company to report quarterly earnings amid a rocky economy and an ongoing U.S. and China trade dispute. Although many tech companies like Meta reported solid first-quarter results, they shared some trepidation about the coming quarters and rest of the year. Meta finance chief Susan Li last week said that “Asia-based e-commerce exporters” have slashed their digital advertising spending in light of the recent ending of the de minimis trade loophole. “It’s very early, hard to know how things will play out over the quarter, and certainly, harder to know that for the rest of the year,” Li said on Meta’s earnings call. Reddit shares jumped as high as 19% last Thursday when the company reported first-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street estimates. But after executives discussed the tough economy and Google-related search challenges during an earnings call, Reddit’s receded to around 5% in after-hours trading that day. Snap reported first-quarter earnings last week that beat on sales, but the company declined to provide guidance because of macroeconomic uncertainties, which caused its stock to sink about 13%. Alphabet reported first-quarter earnings on Apr. 24 and said that its Google advertising sales rose 8.5% year over year to $66.89 billion while YouTube ad revenue increased 10% to $8.93 billion. Executives at the company then told analysts that it expects some headwinds to its core advertising business, particularly from Asia. WATCH: Palantir plunges after earnings. Pakistan and India trade accusations over drone strikes Pakistan and India trade accusations over drone strikes EPA Pakistani security officials inspect the site of an alleged Indian drone strike in Karachi India has accused Pakistan of attacking three of its military bases with drones and missiles, a claim which has been denied by Islamabad. The Indian Army said it had foiled Pakistan’s attempts to attack its bases in Jammu and Udhampur, in Indian-administered Kashmir, and Pathankot, in India’s Punjab state. Blasts were reported on Thursday evening in Jammu city in Indian-administered Kashmir as the region went into a blackout. Pakistan’s defence minister told the BBC they were not behind the attack. “We deny it, we have not mounted anything so far,” Khawaja Asif told the BBC, adding: “We will not strike and then deny”. EPA Blasts were reported in the city of Jammu which went into a ******-out Earlier on Thursday, India said it had struck Pakistan’s air defences and “neutralised” Islamabad’s attempts to hit military targets in India on Wednesday night. Pakistan called that action another “act of aggression”, following Indian missile strikes on Wednesday on targets in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. India’s strikes on Wednesday sparked a chorus of calls for de-escalation from the international community with the UN and world leaders calling for calm. The attacks and incidents of shelling along the border have fanned fears of wider conflict erupting between the nuclear-armed states. It is being viewed as the worst confrontation between the two countries in more than two decades. India said it hit nine “terrorist infrastructure” sites on Wednesday in retaliation for a militant attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month. Pakistan has strongly denied Indian claims that it backed the militants who killed 26 civilians in the mountainous town of Pahalgam. It was the bloodiest attack on civilians in the region for years, sending tensions soaring. Most of the victims were Indian tourists. Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a decades-long insurgency against Indian rule which has claimed thousands of lives. Kashmir has been a flashpoint between the countries since they became independent after British India was partitioned in 1947. Both claim Kashmir and have fought two wars over it. Reuters Locals in border areas have had to be evacuated due to the cross-border shelling – here women and children arrive at a shelter near Jammu There were calls for restraint from around the world after India launched “Operation Sindoor” early on Wednesday. But on Thursday both sides accused each other of further military action. Pakistan’s military spokesman said drones sent by India had been engaged in multiple locations. “Last night, India showed another act of aggression by sending drones to multiple locations,” Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said. “These locations are Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Attock, Bahawalpur, Miano, Chor and near Karachi.” He said one civilian had been killed in Sindh province and four troops injured in Lahore. The US consulate in Lahore told its staff to shelter in the building. India said its latest action had been taken in response to Pakistan’s attempts to “engage a number of military targets in northern and western India” overnight. “It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,” a Defence Ministry statement said. Pakistan denied the claim. There was no independent confirmation of the two countries’ versions of events. Later in the day India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri told a news conference in Delhi: “Our intention has not been to escalate matters, we are only responding to the original escalation.” Meanwhile, casualty numbers continue to rise. Pakistan says 31 people have been killed and 57 injured by Indian air strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and firing along the Line of Control, since Wednesday morning. India’s army said the number of people killed by Pakistani firing in the disputed Kashmir region had risen to 16, including three women and five children. India initially did not name any group it believed was behind the attack in Pahalgam but on 7 May it accused the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group of carrying it out. Indian police have alleged that two of the attackers were Pakistani nationals, a claim denied by Islamabad. It says it has nothing to do with the 22 April attacks. In a late-night address on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge those killed in India’s strikes. He repeated Pakistan’s claim that it had shot down five Indian fighter jets, saying that was a “crushing response”. India has not commented on that claim. Following the reports of Thursday’s explosions in Jammu, local media cited Indian military sources on Thursday in reporting that blasts across the Jammu region were also reported in the towns of Akhnoor, Samba and Kathua. Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Is Getting A 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Is Getting A 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray Alexander didn’t earn much praise when it hit theaters in 2004. Directed by Oliver Stone (Platoon, Natural Born Killers) and starring big names like Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Hopkins, the star-studded cast wasn’t enough to save it from mediocre reviews. However, the film has been given multiple second chances, with a Director’s Cut released in 2005, a Final Cut in 2007, and an Ultimate Cut in 2014, which helped breathe new life into the film, turning it into a cult classic. The latest version, Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 4K Collector’s Edition, is getting a new 4K Blu-ray edition that will launch on July 1. This will be the first time this version of the movie is available on 4K Blu-ray, and it includes a selection of all-new bonus features. Preorders are now available at Amazon. $40 | Releases July 1 The Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Collector’s Edition includes a new 4K restoration of Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut that was supervised and approved by director Oliver Stone. Clocking in at 213 minutes, the Final Cut features over 30 minutes of footage not included in the original film. That’s an astronomical runtime, so don’t be surprised if you have to break it up into multiple viewings. The 4K Blu-ray also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and includes a long list of special features, which we’ve outlined below. A standard Blu-ray version of the movie is also included. Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Collector’s Edition Bonus Features Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 4K Blu-ray is packed with over three hours of bonus features, including a new audio commentary and multiple interviews that are exclusive to this new release. Most of these are presented in 1080p, though some are available in 4K. Here’s a look at what you’ll find (items in bold are new to this 4K Blu-ray edition): Audio commentary with critic Matt Zoller Seitz (4K) Audio commentary with Oliver Stone (4K) Interview with Oliver Stone Interview with editor Alex Marquez Interview with visual effects supervisor John Scheele Fight Against Time documentary Resurrecting Alexander Perfect Is The Enemy Of Good Vangelis Scores Alexaner Theatrical trailers Image gallery Alexander tells the story of Alexander the Great. Set in 4th Century BC, it follows the conqueror’s rise to power, examining his childhood, historic battles, and eventual defeat. It’s a sweeping epic, and one that grew a bit more popular with the Final Cut and its additional scenes. It’s worth noting that a standard edition version of Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut launched earlier and is available now for just $15.85, though it lacks many of the bonus features of the upcoming 4K version. Other versions are also on *****, including Alexander: The Ultimate Cut for $13.14 (was $20), which is a bit shorter than the Final Cut. If you’re a fan of historical epics and Greco-Roman history, you might also want to check out the new Gladiator and Gladiator 2 4K Steelbook releases that are available now, including a Gladiator 2-Movie Steelbook Collection that launched May 6 and bundles the 4K editions of both movies in a single package. Pinterest’s new AI tools help you shop by visuals and vibes Pinterest’s new AI tools help you shop by visuals and vibes Pinterest has debuted a set of new AI-powered visual search tools The AI tools enable users to explore fashion by vibe, mood, or aesthetic The results are aimed at helping produce personalized shopping ideas Pinterest has always been about visuals over text. Now, with the help of AI, you can figure out how to describe those visual inspirations and even get a chance to buy your favorite items, starting with women’s fashion. A growing number of Pins on Pinterest will have specific pieces of an outfit or aesthetic highlighted with a shimmering animated glow. Click on, say, the plaid skirt or the blue jacket, and Pinterest will show you some of the words to describe the item and help you find more like it without you needing a fashion dictionary. Pinterest is using generative AI and Visual Language Models (VLMs) for the new features. The VLMs essentially translate images into searchable terms, decoding your taste from an image and helping you shop for it. It’s like a more nuanced reverse image search tool, one that can converse with you about your interest in vivid tones and stereopunk plaid. You may like You’re not expected to describe your dream outfit with perfect vocabulary. You’re not expected to know what kind of tailoring makes a jacket “structured casual.” You just have to know that you liked that one look for its vibe. Pinterest takes it from there. “Our visual search technology represents a shift in how users interact with and discover inspiration,” Pinterest vice president of design Dana Cho said in a statement. “We’re not simply delivering search results – we’re curating a personalized journey of discovery that empowers individuals to find their unique style, and shop it too.” Pin AI There are other new AI features as well, including a new refinement bar that lets you tweak results on the fly. For instance, if you like a look but want to change its color or styling, you can use the refinement bar to filter for them or other elements like fabric. And if you spot something you want to use to start a visual search from within the app, you just need to long-press on it. Pinterest says it plans to expand the AI tools beyond women’s fashion eventually, but it makes sense that it would start there when it’s such a major facet of the platform. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Pinterest’s new tools don’t mean it’s entirely trusting of AI. The company has also begun adding new labels for AI-modified or AI-generated images and giving users the option to see fewer of them via topic filters. It’s a small but smart nod to the fact that inspiration is great, but that reality still matters when you’re shopping for actual clothing. Still, it’s an interesting approach to online shopping, and one that fits the way people shop in person by looking at clothes, not just describing them. The AI is like a personal shopper who understands most people rely on visual impressions and gut feelings to decide what to buy, rather than knowing stitch patterns and trend terms. Trump’s Justice Department launches criminal probe into Letitia James, multiple sources say Trump’s Justice Department launches criminal probe into Letitia James, multiple sources say More than a year after New York Attorney General Letitia James won a half-billion dollar civil fraud case against President Trump, the Justice Department under Mr. Trump has launched a criminal fraud probe targeting James, multiple sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York John A. Sarcone III told the Albany Times-Union that the investigation was “being handled at this time by main [Department of] Justice and the Albany FBI field office.” A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment. The investigation began after William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleging that James “has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms.” Pulte claimed James received deals on mortgage terms by falsifying information related to multiple properties, over the course of decades. The allegations include listing a home in Norfolk, Virginia as her “principal residence” despite living and working in New York, buying a five-family property in Brooklyn with a loan that is only available for homes with four units or less, and an accusation that, in 1983, James’ father signed mortgage documents stating they were husband and wife. James has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.” James’ office on Thursday declined to comment. Abbe Lowell — an attorney for James whose firm frequently represents clients that it believes have been unfairly targeted by the Trump administration — has also derided the investigation. In a statement to CBS News, Lowell called the allegations “baseless and long-discredited” and said that the investigation “appears to be the political retribution President Trump threatened to exact that AG Bondi assured the Senate would not occur on her watch. If prosecutors are genuinely interested in the truth, we are prepared to meet false claims with facts.” Last month, Lowell sent a letter to the Department of Justice refuting the allegations laid out in Pulte’s letter. In a letter to Bondi, Lowell called the allegations “long-disproven” and the investigation, “the latest act of improper political retribution — this time directed at Ms. James — publicly instigated and endorsed by President Trump.” In February 2024, a New York judge ordered Mr. Trump, his company and two of his adult sons to pay the State of New York about $364 million. The figure, with interest accumulated over more than a decade, currently totals more than $500 million. Trump has appealed the ruling. The ruling came after a lengthy civil trial in which James’ office accused Mr. Trump of spearheading an effort to use fraudulent property valuations and estimates of Mr. Trump’s net worth to obtain favorable loan rates and insurance deals he wouldn’t otherwise have gotten received. The figure Mr. Trump was ordered to pay reflected the judge’s calculation of how much Mr. Trump and his company benefited through the scheme. Mr. Trump has long raged against the case, and James — even suing her unsuccessfully in an effort to stop her fraud investigation before a suit could be filed by the state. Mr. Trump was forced to take the stand in November 2023 during the trial, lashing out at James during his hourslong testimony, and calling the fraud case “a terrible, terrible thing.” Jennifer Jacobs Jennifer Jacobs is a senior White House reporter at CBS News. Itoje: the Lion king who’s proved Eddie Jones wrong Itoje: the Lion king who’s proved Eddie Jones wrong Eddie Jones once famously wrote of Maro Itoje: “I might be wrong but I am not sure Maro is a future England captain.” Not for the first time, Australia’s then England coach, who never felt the brilliant lock could be trusted as captain material, really did get it wrong. For not only has the 30-year-old Itoje gone on to lead England with distinction, he’s now the man the British & Irish Lions have chosen to inspire them to victory over the Wallabies this winter. “A special man,” coach Andy Farrell called Itoje at the team announcement in London on Thursday. The criticism from Jones of Itoje was that was “too inward looking” and “doesn’t usually influence people off the field.” Itoje evidently felt it quite a hurtful suggestion and has since hit back by suggesting: “I felt that was a wrong diagnosis of who I am. “Most people who know me, most people who read those comments who knew me, would say that was an inaccurate conclusion to who I am as a person. “I guess it was unfortunate that your coach would say something like that about you but in life not everyone is going to see the things that way you see it.” Lions’ coach Andy Farrell certainly believes he’s got the right man for the job as he explained on Thursday how his team leader in Australia needed to be “a special person”. And despite Jones’s assertion, Itoje, the Lions’ first ****** captain, has indeed been a groundbreaking leader from his early days in the sport, leading the England Under-20s to Junior World Cup triumph in 2014 all the way to now spearheading top English club Saracens. “I’m deeply honoured, humbled and I’ll do my best to do the role justice. I’m very much looking forward to the challenge ahead, it’s going to be a great tour,” said Itoje, whose path to the job was cleared when Ireland skipper Caelan Doris injured his shoulder at the weekend, ruling him out of the entire tour. “As you can imagine, Caelan’s devastated,” reported Farrell. Itoje dined in London on Wednesday with past Lions captains and said their passion and appreciation shone through. “It was amazing. It’s a brotherhood, it’s a unique club and to spend time with them, for them to show the love and care and appreciation they still have for the Lions. It was absolutely amazing to be a part of that.” Source link #Itoje #Lion #king #whos #proved #Eddie #Jones #wrong Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

‘Attacking’ is the most consistent element “‘Attacking’ is the most consistent element” FromSoftware has never shied away from innovation, especially when it comes to the brutal beauty of its combat systems. With Elden Ring Nightreign, the studio is taking its first steps into a more co-op-driven, action-adventure experience, yet it still manages to surprise. Among the most talked-about features following the game’s network test is its unusual revival mechanic. In a genre where reviving teammates usually means channeling healing spells or holding down buttons, Nightreign takes a different route entirely, it’s asking players to do what they do best: attack. Elden Ring Nightreign comes with a revival system that breaks convention In a recent interview with PlayStation Blog Japan, Game Director Junya Ishizaki explained the origins of this design. And also provided insight that Nightreign draws heavily on the foundational mechanics of Elden Ring, utilizing many of its assets and combat systems. Rather than layering new systems on top of the old, the team looked inward, asking how they could repurpose existing gameplay elements in innovative ways. Given that attacking is an action all players engage in constantly, it naturally became the centerpiece of the game’s revival mechanic. We realized that ‘attacking’ is the most consistent element of Nightreign’s gameplay. […] so we formally implemented it. We also found it quite amusing. This single insight led the development team to experiment with a system where incapacitated teammates can be revived through offensive action: literally striking them back to life. However, since we are talking about FromSoftware, this isn’t just a quirky twist for the sake of novelty. The revive-by-attack system introduces a surprising amount of tactical depth to co-op gameplay. Because the system is governed by variables like weapon range, attack timing, and risk of enemy interference, every revival attempt becomes a strategic decision, one that might just shift the tide of battle. Striking a balance between familiar, fresh, and a bit of chaos It’s not just a gimmick, it’s as chaotic and tactical as you’d expect. | Image Credit: FromSoftware While the revival system stems from a logical design choice, it also introduces an unpredictable energy to every co-op session. You’re not just attacking your enemies but also your fallen teammates. This creates constant pressure and the risk of rushing in to save a fallen ally with a well-timed strike. It also creates natural tension, improvisation, and shared moments of triumph (or failure) that feel uniquely FromSoftware. It’s this kind of thoughtful experimentation that signals Nightreign isn’t just a spin-off; it’s an evolution. By striking a careful balance between familiar gameplay and bold new systems, the developer invites players to explore a fresh layer of depth in a world they thought they already knew. Though many might find it strange, it works, and perhaps more importantly, it fits. It’s a reminder that even in co-op play, Elden Ring’s DNA lives on: brutal, inventive, and unapologetically bold. Elden Ring Nightreign launches May 30 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Source link #Attacking #consistent #element Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

What is 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)? What is 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)? 1000BASE-T is a Gigabit Ethernet standard that operates at a speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) over copper wiring. One Gb is equivalent to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). The standard uses four pairs of Category 5 (Cat5) or higher unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cables to achieve the gigabit data rate. The “T” in 1000BASE-T refers to twisted-pair cable. 1000BASE-T can also be referred to as 1000BaseT, GbE, 1 GigE or simply Gigabit. The progression of Ethernet development from 1995 to 2020 and beyond Understanding 1000BASE-T 1000BASE-T is the most common networking standard in use today. It quickly replaced older Ethernet standards — such as Ethernet (10BASE-T, 10 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T, 100 Mbps) — as the de facto standard for network equipment. Its 1 Gbps speed can be achieved over these types of twisted-wire copper cables: Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat7 and Cat8. Established in 1999, the IEEE standard 802.3ab defines 1000BASE-T. 802.3ab defined how Gigabit Ethernet transmission works over UTP Cat5, Cat5e and Cat6 copper cables: 1000 sets the transmission speed of 1,000 Mbps, or 1 Gbps. BASE sets the standard as Ethernet baseband signaling, meaning it only carries Ethernet signals. T sets the cable media type as twisted pair. The various UTP categories as defined by data rate, maximum length, cable type and application Where is 1000BASE-T used? 1000BASE-T is supported by almost all modern equipment, offering good enough performance for most common applications. Almost all networking equipment supports it on the access layer, although some backbone applications require a faster standard. Most home equipment produced in the last decade supports Gigabit Ethernet, enabling home users to enjoy the benefit of high-speed Ethernet in a cost-effective manner. The Gigabit Ethernet standard can be used in data centers for server interconnects or network switch uplinks or be used directly with the desktop. It is also used for general server interconnects and for endpoint client connections. Other applications of 1000BASE-T include the following: What are the 1000BASE-T specifications? 1000BASE-T operates at 1 Gbps. It uses cheap and readily available cables that already existed for many applications. It uses four twisted pairs for both half-duplex (nonsimultaneous transmit and receive) and full-duplex communication (simultaneous transmit and receive). The minimum standard for cabling is Cat5 cable. However, the standard is also readily compatible with all later standards, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat7 and Cat8. 1000BASE-T maximum cable (segment) length is 100 meters (m), or about 328 feet. It uses the RJ45 connector and jack. RJ45, when properly crimped and attached securely, enables compatibility between 1000BASE-T and existing network infrastructure, which enhances data transmission without requiring major and costly infrastructure overhauls. Automatic medium-dependent interface crossover is a standard feature for Gigabit Ethernet. This means that Gigabit ports can auto negotiate the transmit between 10 Mbps and 1000 Mbps and receive twisted pairs in the cable. The ports, therefore, do not need crossover cables, and dedicated upload ports on switches are largely redundant. The physical medium attachment sublayer can potentially correct for nonstandard or reversed cabling. 1000BASE-T cabling is also compatible with some faster standards. 2.5GBASE-T (2.5 Gbps) and 5GBASE-T (5 Gbps) Ethernet can use the same Cat5e and Cat6 cables as Gigabit Ethernet. Extremely fast 10GBASE-T (10 Gbps) is capable over Cat6e cables. These standards are interoperable and autonegotiated, enabling simple upgrade paths. This enables businesses and users to continue to use their existing wiring and increase available bandwidth with only relatively minor upgrades. Gigabit Ethernet operates on Layer 1 of the Open Systems Interconnection model, which is the physical layer. Physical data communication occurs in this layer through physical channels, like copper cables and fiber optic cables. Advantages and disadvantages of 1000BASE-T One of the biggest advantages of 1000BASE-T is that it offers high data transfer speeds. However, it consumes more power than its predecessor technologies, which can adversely impact a data center’s energy efficiency. Also, as a wired standard, 1000BASE-T relies on copper cabling, offering limited mobility compared to wireless technologies, like Wi-Fi. Another benefit of Gigabit Ethernet is that existing copper cabling can be used instead of having to rewire with optical fiber or newer-generation cables. It also supports Power over Ethernet, so many devices can receive power and data through a single cable. Thus, this technology provides a cost-effective way to upgrade the existing network infrastructure and support higher bandwidth requirements. For all these reasons, 1000BASE-T is a good Ethernet standard for today’s networking and data transmission requirements. These advantages notwithstanding, Gigabit Ethernet does have some limitations. One major limitation is related to distance. The standard supports a maximum cable length of 100 m. While this length may be sufficient for smaller installations, it may be insufficient for larger or complex installations. Also, extending the cable length can result in signal degradation and errors, which can reduce performance and even lead to loss of connections. 1000BASE-T is backward-compatible with older standards — 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX — so it can be easily integrated with existing network infrastructure. However, some older devices may not be able to negotiate the higher speeds, causing errors or slowdowns. What are other Gigabit Ethernet standards? Although the terms 1000BASE-T and Gigabit Ethernet are often used interchangeably, the Gigabit Ethernet standard also includes several other standards. These standards use different types of cables than 1000BASE-T. They can be broadly divided into ones using copper cable and ones using fiber optics. Copper wire Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-T uses four pairs of Cat5 or later UTP cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 100 m. 1000BASE-TX uses two pairs of shielded twisted pair (STP) using Cat6 or Cat7 cables with a maximum allowable cable length of 100 m. It uses more expensive cables but less expensive electronics. It is no longer widely used. 1000BASE-CX uses two pairs of balanced 150 ohm STP cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 25 m. It uses a different connector than 1000BASE-T. It is still used in some specific data center applications. Fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-SX is a short laser wavelength on multimode fiber optic cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 550 m. 1000BASE-LX/LH/LX10 is a long wavelength for a long-haul fiber optic cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 10 kilometers (km). 1000BASE-ZX is an extended wavelength single-mode optical fiber for up to 100 km. It is not an IEEE standard, but is supported by many vendors. The evolution of Ethernet over more than 30 years Internet and Ethernet both serve to facilitate connectivity and communication, yet they possess distinctions in terms of scope, purpose, reliability and medium. To gain insight into these concepts, refer to this guide on the differences between internet and Ethernet. President Trump announced that a trade deal has been reached with the U.K. This marks the first deal of its kind after Trump announced sweeping tariffs in April. Though the details were light, some of the language in the announcement indicates Palantir could benefit specifically. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Shares of Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) are surging on Thursday. The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered data analytics company’s stock gained 8.1% as of 1 p.m. ET and was up as much as 9% earlier in the day. The jump comes as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) rose 2%. The government-focused software provider is rallying after President Trump announced a trade agreement with the United Kingdom. Palantir shares climbed as President Donald Trump unveiled the broad outline of a trade agreement with the United Kingdom. This is the first major deal his administration has been able to put together after Trump imposed sweeping tariffs in April. While optimism was high following the announcement, it’s important to note that many specifics remain unclear, and nothing was formally signed. “The final details are being written up,” Trump said. “In the coming weeks, we’ll have it all very conclusive.” While the news boosted stocks across the market, Palantir investors appeared especially optimistic, as some of the limited specifics mentioned could benefit the company specifically. The White House fact sheet released as part of the announcement mentions the deal will “close loopholes and increase U.S. firms’ competitiveness in the U.K.’s procurement market.” This could mean Palantir has an easier time winning new contracts with the U.K. government. Image source: Getty Images. With a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of nearly 500, Palantir’s valuation is out of touch with reality. There is no doubt that the company is executing at a very high level, but with a valuation this high, a level of perfection is required that I don’t think is possible to sustain long term. India and Pakistan trade fire and accusations as fears of a wider military confrontation rise India and Pakistan trade fire and accusations as fears of a wider military confrontation rise India fired attack drones into Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least two civilians, the Pakistani military said. India, meanwhile, accused its neighbor of attempting its own attack, as tensions soared between the nuclear-armed rivals. India acknowledged that it targeted Pakistan’s air defense system, and Islamabad said it shot down several of the drones. India said it “neutralized” Pakistan’s attempts to hit military targets. It was not possible to verify all of the claims. The exchanges came a day after Indian missiles struck several locations in Pakistan, killing 31 civilians, according to Pakistani officials. New Delhi said it was retaliating after gunmen killed more than two dozen people, mostly Hindu tourists, in India-controlled Kashmir last month. India accused Pakistan of being behind the assault. Islamabad denies that. Both sides have also traded heavy fire across their frontier in disputed Kashmir, and Pakistan claimed it killed scores of Indian soldiers. There was no confirmation from India. Late Thursday in Indian-controlled Kashmir, residents of the city of Jammu reported hearing explosions and sirens. Shesh Paul Vaid, the region’s former director-general of police, said there was a complete blackout in Jammu following loud blasts. “Bombing, shelling, or missile strikes suspected,” he wrote on social media. Jammu is close to the Line of Control, the de factor border that divides the Kashmir region between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge the deaths in India’s missile strikes, raising fears that the two countries could be headed toward another all-out conflict. Leaders from both nations face mounting public pressure to show strength and seek revenge, and the heated rhetoric and competing claims could be a response to that pressure. The relationship between countries has been shaped by conflict and mutual suspicion, most notably in their dispute over Kashmir. They have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region, which is split between them and claimed by both in its entirety. With tensions high, India evacuated thousands of people from villages near the highly militarized frontier in the region. Tens of thousands of people slept in shelters overnight, officials and residents said Thursday. About 2,000 villagers also fled their homes in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Mohammad Iftikhar boarded a vehicle with his family on Thursday as heavy rain lashed the region. “I am helplessly leaving my home for the safety of my children and wife,” he said. India fires drones at Pakistan India fired several Israeli-made Harop drones at Pakistan overnight and into Thursday afternoon, according to Pakistani army spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, who said 29 were shot down. Two civilian were killed and another wounded when debris from a downed drone fell in Sindh province. One drone damaged a military site near the city of Lahore and wounded four soldiers, and another fell in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near the capital, according to Sharif. “The armed forces are neutralizing them as we speak,” he told state-run Pakistan Television. In Lahore, local police official Mohammad Rizwan said a drone was downed near Walton Airport, an airfield in a residential area about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the border with India that also contains military installations. India’s Defense Ministry said its armed forces “targeted air defense radars and systems” in several places in Pakistan, including Lahore. Blackout in Gurdaspur district New Delhi, meanwhile, accused Pakistan of attempting “to engage a number of military targets” with missiles and drones along the Line of Control that divides Kashmir and elsewhere along their border. “The debris of these attacks in now being recovered from a number of locations,” it said. At a news briefing, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday rejected India’s claim that Islamabad carried out any attack in Indian Punjab. “These accusations are an attempt to incite anti-Pakistan sentiment among the Punjabi Sikh population in India,” he said. Seated alongside Dar, the military spokesperson, Sharif said Pakistan shot down 29 Indian drones after they violated its airspace. Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told parliament that so far Pakistan has not responded to India’s missiles attacks, but there will be one. Later Thursday, Indian authorities ordered a night-time blackout in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, which borders with Pakistan. The Harop drone, produced by Israel’s IAI, is one of several in India’s inventory, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance report. According to IAI, the Harop combines the capabilities of a drone and a missile and can operate at long ranges. The two sides have also exchanged heavy fire over the past day. Tarar said that the country’s armed forces have killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers in the exchanges along the Line of Control. India has not commented on that claim. Earlier, the army said one Indian soldier was killed by shelling Wednesday. Sikh Temple in Kashmir Tarar denied Indian accusations that Pakistan had fired missiles toward the Indian city of Amritsar, saying in fact an Indian drone fell in the city. Neither claim could be confirmed. India’s Foreign Ministry has said that 16 civilians were killed Wednesday during exchanges of fire across the de facto border. Pakistani officials said six people have been killed near highly militarized frontier in exchanges of fire over the past day. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri denied that New Delhi has targeted civilians and a key dam, as Pakistan has alleged. He, in turn, accused Pakistani forces of targeting civilians, including at a Sikh Temple in Kashmir, where he said three Sikhs were killed. Flights remained suspended at over two dozen airports across northern and western regions in India, according to travel advisories by multiple airlines. Pakistan resumed flights nationwide after a suspension at four airports, according to the Civil Aviation Authority. Alberta separatism gets Fox News attention after Carney-Trump meeting Alberta separatism gets Fox News attention after Carney-Trump meeting The renewed push to have Alberta separate from Canada has caught the eyes of some pundits on Fox News, who are suggesting the discontent could play into the larger trade and security negotiations between Canada and U.S. President Donald Trump. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced this week that she doesn’t want Alberta to leave Canada but, if enough residents sign a petition asking for a referendum on it, she’ll make sure it’s put to a vote in 2026. Smith — who delivered her speech a day before Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Trump at the White House — also presented a list of demands for Carney’s new Liberal government, and threatened to take steps to assert Alberta’s sovereignty if Ottawa didn’t address the province’s grievances. Those remarks, and the calls for secession from some Alberta residents, played into the coverage of the Carney-Trump sit-down on Fox News this week. Story continues below advertisement “President Trump is sensing weakness and I think he smells blood,” Jeanine Pirro said Tuesday during a discussion on the popular panel show The Five. “If there is a sense in Canada that the people aren’t happy, if the provinces that have talked about seceding are saying that the ********* federal government is not concerned about them, it may be that Trump is sensing this and he’s going to target them, and that all of this (negotiations between Trump and Carney) is just kind of, like, another discussion, but it’s really about those places that want to secede.” 0:56 ‘Hopefully that doesn’t happen’: Ford says he’s against Alberta separation amid Smith’s referendum promise Pirro suggested Quebec also wants to secede, despite the sovereigntist Bloc Quebecois’ diminished seats in the recent federal election and recent polling suggesting Trump’s attacks on Canada’s sovereignty and economy have dampened the separatist movement. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Co-host Jesse Watters went even further in response to Pirro, suggesting Alberta alone could become America’s 51st state instead of Canada as a whole, as Trump has repeatedly called for. Story continues below advertisement “I think we want Alberta, because they’re the powerhouse,” he said. “They have all the oil, they have all the minerals. … They’re also conservative in Alberta, so it’s not a great, beautiful line like what you’d see (as a combined Canada with the U.S.) but it would just kind of look like a big Florida that would shoot up north. But it would give us access to the Arctic. “There’s going to be a referendum, I don’t know if it’s going to be possible, but I like how he’s using the leverage. If these people want to go, just use that as a little pressure point to exploit them for concessions.” More on Politics More videos The same day, while talking about the White House meeting, Fox Business anchor David Asman brought up the Alberta separatism movement and Smith’s remarks from Monday, including what he said was her claim that Alberta is “not getting anything from the federal government.” “I think Donald Trump and this 51st state thing is playing into that, what’s going on in Canada, he said. “He could chip off a piece at a time and do business with the very oil-rich section of Canada,” anchor Martha MacCallum responded in agreement. Political analysts had predicted earlier this week that Smith’s speech would likely be noticed by decision-makers and media in the U.S. Trump has been known to regularly watch and publicly comment on Fox News programs. Story continues below advertisement “It doesn’t strengthen Canada’s position,” Lori Williams, a political science professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary, told Global News. “People in the United States, the strategists there, are going to be looking for any chinks in the armour, and this is something that they might want to try to exploit or take advantage of.” Trending Now Woman awarded $55K by tribunal after being compared to Darth Vader No interprovincial trade barriers by Canada Day? Why Carney faces uphill battle Smith’s office did not respond to a request for reaction to the Fox News comments and suggestions that Alberta could become part of the U.S. in the event it secedes from Canada. 1:53 Alta. premier says she’ll work with Carney ‘in good faith’ to repair relations Smith travelled to Florida to meet with Trump in January before his inauguration, after he first threatened sweeping tariffs on Canada. She has also appeared on Fox News herself to argue against tariffs and propose strengthening U.S. business and energy ties. Story continues below advertisement The premier was also criticized for telling Breitbart News on the eve of the federal election campaign that she wanted the Trump administration to “pause” its tariffs to avoid boosting the Liberals. Carney met with Canada’s premiers Wednesday and discussed “building projects of national interest to diversify the economy, create higher-paying jobs, and build one ********* economy instead of 13,” according to a readout from the Prime Minister’s Office. Smith said after the meeting there’s an emerging consensus among premiers that federal regulations need to be cleared away to allow for “nation building projects” and investment, which Carney has also publicly supported. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has said he doesn’t want Alberta to secede, said Wednesday he told Carney that it’s time his government started “showing some love” to Alberta and Saskatchewan, where there has also been talk of separation recently. Angus Reid polling in April found 30 per cent of Albertans supported their province separating from Canada, down from 60 per cent who said in 2019 they were open to joining a western separatist movement. A Leger poll this week suggested 62 per cent of Albertans believe the separation threat should be taken seriously. A February poll from Ipsos found 30 per cent of Albertans believe either their province, Quebec or both will separate from Canada within the next 10 years, while 28 per cent said they would vote for their newly-independent province to join the U.S. Story continues below advertisement The poll found that nationally, younger Canadians aged 18-35 were more likely to voice support for their province or country joining the U.S. compared to older Canadians. Nearly one-third of younger respondents said it was “only a matter of time” before Canada and the U.S. become a single, unified country. © 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. Live Updates: Robert Francis Prevost Is 1st American Pope
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Live Updates: Robert Francis Prevost Is 1st American Pope Live Updates: Robert Francis Prevost Is 1st American Pope Robert Francis Prevost, who was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday and took the name Pope Leo XIV, is the first pope from the United States. The decision from the 133 voting cardinals, which arrived in a plume of white smoke at the end of their second day of voting inside the secrecy of the Sistine Chapel, defied longstanding belief that church leaders would never select a pope from a global superpower that already has considerable influence in world affairs. Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, the immediate successor to Pope Francis has the potential to shake up the global Catholic power structure. As an American, he is uniquely positioned to stand in contrast to the energized conservative Catholicism in his home country, and has pushed back forcefully against the militant vision of Christian power that the Trump administration has elevated. Despite his American roots, the Chicago-born polyglot, 69, is viewed as a churchman who transcends borders. He served for two decades in Peru, where he became a bishop and a naturalized citizen, then rose to lead his international religious order. Under Pope Francis, he held one of the most influential ******** posts, running the office that selects and manages bishops globally. That made him an attractive choice to the Roman Curia, the powerful bureaucracy that governs the church and which, after frequently experiencing reprimands and upheavals from Pope Francis, wanted someone who knew, and appreciated, the institution. A member of the Order of St. Augustine, he shares Francis’ commitment to helping the poor and migrants. He told the ********’s official news website last year that “the bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom, but rather called authentically to be humble, to be close to the people he serves, to walk with them, to suffer with them, and to look for ways that he can better live the gospel message in the midst of his people.” Often described as reserved and discreet, he likely will depart stylistically from Francis as pope. Supporters believe he will most likely continue the consultative process started by Francis to include lay people in some meetings with bishops. In a conclave with ideological divides between those who wanted to continue Pope Francis’ inclusive but at times provocative agenda, and those who preferred to return to a more conservative path focused on doctrinal purity, Pope Leo XIV likely represented a balanced alternative. “He’s not a grandstander,” said the Rev. Mark R. Francis, a former classmate of Cardinal Prevost, who runs the American arm of the Clerics of St. Viator, a religious order, in Chicago. “He is a very balanced, measured kind of person who deals well with crisis in a certain sense,” said Father Francis. “It doesn’t fluster him. He thinks things through and offers very stable leadership.” He has spent much of his life outside the United States. Ordained in Rome in 1982 at age 27, he received a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, also in Rome. In Peru, he was a missionary, parish priest, teacher and bishop. As the Augustinians’ leader, he visited orders around the world, and he speaks Spanish and Italian. Francis sought to expand the geographical diversity of the church’s hierarchy and named many new cardinals, some from countries that had never had one before. Francis gave Cardinal Prevost his red hat in 2023, making him one of the more recent members of the College of Cardinals that elected him. A diplomatic treaty required that he be naturalized as a citizen of Peru before he could become bishop in Chiclayo, a city in the northwestern part of the country. During his time as bishop in Chiclayo, he frequently visited far-flung communities. He incorporated lay people into pastoral social work, said Yolanda Díaz, a teacher and member of the church in Chiclayo. “Instead of thinking of pastoral work as people going to church,” she said, “he wanted the church to go to the people.” Sister Dianne Bergant, who taught him in ****** classes at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where he received a masters in divinity in 1982, said he was a quiet “A student.” She said that when he was made a cardinal decades after he had been a student in her class, he responded immediately to a congratulatory email she sent him, thanking her for helping him in his theological development. Pope Leo XIV may not be as openly welcoming in tone to L.G.B.T.Q. people as his predecessor, who famously said “Who am I to judge?” when asked about gay clerics. In a 2012 address to bishops, before Pope Francis’s oft-cited words, Cardinal Prevost lamented that Western news media and popular culture fostered “sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel.” He cited the “*********** lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.” As bishop in Chiclayo, he opposed a government plan to add teachings on gender in schools. “The promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don’t exist,” he told local news media. Cardinal Prevost, like many of the others who ultimately elected him, has drawn criticism over his dealings with priests accused of ******* abuse. In Chicago, advocates for victims of ******* abuse say that his office did not warn a nearby Catholic school that a priest who church leaders determined had abused young boys for years was sheltered in a monastery nearby, starting in 2000. As head of the Midwestern order of Augustinians at the time, Cardinal Prevost would have approved the priest’s move to the monastery. Friends say he is laid back and humble, dropping by the Augustinian monastery in Rome to eat with priests in the order and always washing his own dishes, said the Rev. Alejandro Moral Antón, Cardinal Prevost’s successor as Augustinian leader in Rome. The Rev. Michele Falcone, 46, a priest in the Order of St. Augustine previously led by Cardinal Prevost, said his mentor and friend had a collaborative leadership style and could be flexible depending on the context. He might wear highly formal vestments for an imperial Mass while dressing more casually for a local parish. He is known to play a game of tennis and is a fan of baseball, explaining the rules to some of his Italian friends and fellow Augustinians. Still, said Father Falcone, “it is not like Pope Francis. His passion does not reach those levels.” In recent years, the Catholic archdiocese in Chicago, led by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, became an important region of support for Pope Francis’s agenda for the church. Chicagoans immediately rejoiced at the news that the first American pope was a native of their city. Father William Lego, the pastor of St. Turibius Church in Chicago, knew the new pope when they were young seminarians. “I think my classmate just got it,” he said, sounding stunned, from his office. “They picked a good man. He always had that sense of being conscious of the poor and trying to help them.” When his name was first announced in the square, many in the crowd were completely perplexed. “Not Italian?” several said, and one man replayed the announcement he had captured on his phone to see if he could hear the name. Behind him, Nicole Serena, 21, an Italian-American studying marketing in Rome, said “I think an American pope just got elected.” Benjamin Smith 20, from Crosby, Minn., said he had never heard of Cardinal Prevost. “But this is so awesome,” said Mr. Smith, an exchange student studying theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas, where the cardinal received his doctorate. “I’m so excited,” Mr. Smith said. In Peru, Father Pedro Vásquez, 82, a priest in Chiclayo, where Cardinal Prevost served as archbishop, was so excited he said that “My heart is going to fail me!” “I’m going to faint!” he said, “Oh my god, oh my god!” Mitra Taj contributed reporting from Lima, Peru, Julie Turkewitz from Bogotá, Colombia, Josephine de La Bruyère from Rome and Julie Bosman from Chicago. Trump calls election of first American pope a ‘great honor’ Trump calls election of first American pope a ‘great honor’ US President Donald Trump has called the election of the first American pope, Robert Francis Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, a “great honour” for the country and said he looks forward to meeting him. Trump is among the many American political figures applauding the historic appointment of the 69-year-old native Chicagoan to lead the Catholic Church. “To have the Pope from America is a great honour,” Trump said later when asked for reaction to the news. Pope Leo was born in Chicago and attended university outside Philadelphia, before becoming a missionary in Peru. Trump’s Republican colleague, House Speaker Mike Johnson also congratulated the new pope and wrote on social media: “May God bless the first American papacy in these historic days.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Catholic, also extended his congratulations. “This is a moment of profound significance for the Catholic Church, offering renewed hope and continuity amid the 2025 Jubilee Year to over a billion faithful worldwide,” Rubio said. “The United States looks forward to deepening our enduring relationship with the Holy See with the first American pontiff.” The US has the fourth largest number of Catholics. Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson also offered a note of congratulations on social media. “Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago! Congratulations to the first American Pope Leo XIV! We hope to welcome you back home soon.” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the moment “historic”. “Hailing from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV ushers in a new chapter that I join those in our state welcoming in at a time when we need compassion, unity, and peace,” he wrote on social media. Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic himself, is yet to make a public statement about Pope Leo’s selection. As cardinal, Pope Leo did not shy away from challenging the views of the vice president. He has reposted a social media post critical of the Trump administration’s deportation of a US resident to El Salvador, and shared a critical comment piece written about a TV interview given by Vance to Fox News. “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” read the post, repeating the headline from the commentary on the National Catholic Reporter website. Aspiring pollie Amelia Glass retains her Vasse seat in Y WA’s Youth Parliament Aspiring pollie Amelia Glass retains her Vasse seat in Y WA’s Youth Parliament Rosa Brook teenager Amelia Glass will once again represent the region in Y WA’s Youth Parliament. The 17-year-old will effectively act as the incumbent for the seat of Vasse during ongoing activities in the program after winning selection for the mock seat for a second time. In the 30th year of the Youth Parliament program, Amelia was among 59 young people chosen for the program which offers those aged between 15 and 25 a taste of life in politics. Amelia has already tested herself in the program which sees participants develop mock legislation to address issues close to their hearts. She told the Times regional issues and especially education for rural students were key to her concerns. “I’m super interested in regional development,” she said. “No one should be left behind in this State just because they live away from Perth. “There is a clear difference in healthcare, education and other vital services, and this needs to be fixed to give regional youth the best chance at success.” Amelia said the program held a lot of appeal because young Western Australians were the future of the State. “Every decision that is being made right now is directly impacting our lives into the future, and no matter how minor the decision is, it can still have a massive effect,” she told the Times. “Young people should have a voice, as it is our future that is being impacted right now.” Y WA chief executive Tim McDonald said the Youth Parliament program provided keen young people with critical insight into the workings of government as well as how policies were developed. “Our intentions are always based around empowerment and giving young people a voice,” Dr McDonald said. “This program is truly representative of the views and concerns of the State’s next generation of community leaders.” Amelia previously developed legislation focused on addressing inequities in regional education by providing incentives to teachers for personal development as well as relocating to regional WA. Ironically, some similar policy considerations have since been floated during the recent State election. Amelia told the Times she ventured back for a second term because as well as her fulfilment, the program was fun. “It is such a cool program that helps you build a community with other like-minded young people, as well as a platform to help convey youth ideas to the Government and guide policy decisions,” she said. “You also get a really interesting range of perspectives from people who come from all over.” The program runs across coming months and culminates in official functions at Parliament in early July. One income-producing corner of the energy market is holding up well One income-producing corner of the energy market is holding up well While last month was turbulent for the energy sector overall, a few bright spots within the industry managed to emerge – and those names happen to offer attractive dividends. The S & P 500 energy sector posted a nearly 14% decline for April, languishing alongside the falling price of oil. U.S. crude oil futures tanked nearly 19% last month, while Brent crude , the international oil benchmark, slid more than 15%. Recession fears and oversupply concerns fueled the slide in oil prices, with OPEC+ agreeing to boost production by 410,000 barrels per day in June . But even as the energy sector has suffered in 2025, it remains attractive, Savita Subramanian, head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy at Bank of America, said in a note last week, when her team upgraded the group to overweight from market-weight. “S & P Energy is different this time: [management] compensation is aligned not with production targets but with cash return – dividends are sacrosanct,” she said, adding that energy companies should largely be exempt from tariffs and their free cash flow yield is “well above average at 6%.” “If stagflation is the base case, Energy is more likely to outperform than underperform,” Subramanian wrote. In April, some corners of the energy sector managed to stave off the worst of the declines: midstream and downstream companies – better known as pipelines and refiners. Consider that the Global X MLP & Energy Infrastructure ETF (MLPX) fell 5.7% in April, while the VanEck Oil Refiners ETF (CRAK) dropped 3.5%. CRAK YTD mountain VanEck Oil Refiners ETF in 2025 Both are also managing to hold their own in 2025, with MLPX down less than 1% and CRAK up more than 4%, even as the energy sector as a whole is down more than 3%. “Upstream – exploration and production – got smoked, and midstream – the pipelines held up relatively better,” said Stephen Kolano, chief investment officer at Integrated Partners in Waltham, Mass. “With commodities prices coming down, exploration and production are most sensitive to those prices.” Pipelines are better insulated from that pressure as they are volume businesses – they transport and store oil and gas – while refiners are about to benefit from seasonal advantages as the summer driving season begins, he said. Attractive dividends “It’s classically defined as nothing more than a towrope that moves product, be it oil, gas or water, from one place to the other,” Philip Blancato, chief market strategist at Osaic, said of pipelines. He noted that the dividends help smooth out volatile moves in the stocks. Some of the pipeline companies are structured as master limited partnerships, which is part of the reason they can offer attractive dividend yields. While these partnerships aren’t subject to federal income taxes, the limited partners – the investors – are on the hook for taxes on distributed income. That’s different from the way C-corporations are taxed, where the business is subject to corporate income taxes and shareholders are responsible for taxes on dividends received. Those high dividends also come with tax complexities, where the partnership sends a Schedule K-1 to investors, detailing the income received. “It’s nice to get a big dividend, but if you get the K-1 late, you’ll probably have to file your taxes late,” Blancato said. He highlighted Enterprise Products Partners . Shares are down about 2% in 2025 and have a dividend yield of 7%. Well liked The name is well liked on Wall Street, with 15 of 20 analysts rating it buy or strong buy and consensus price targets suggesting more than 21% upside, according to LSEG. Mizuho analyst Gabriel Moreen stuck with his outperform rating on Enterprise in late April, noting that while it posted a “weak” first quarter, it also shared “reassuring updates on ‘big picture’ themes.” “We found it encouraging that management emphasized the outlook for Permian associated gas growth even if Permian crude [oil] production enters maintenance mode,” he wrote. The analyst added that Enterprise still anticipates a “mid single-digit” cash flow improvement in 2026. Blancato also likes Western Midstream , once known as Western Gas, which pays a dividend yield of 9.9%. Shares are down nearly 4% in 2025. Most analysts covering the name rate it hold, but consensus price targets call for 10% upside, per LSEG. Even as these energy stocks offer solid dividends – limited partnerships in particular – investors should use them sparingly and understand they could see volatility in the stocks, Blancato said. “Think of this as a way to complement a core dividend strategy,” he said. “Hold some bonds, some high-quality dividend payers. This is the sweetener in your coffee.” Source link #incomeproducing #corner #energy #market #holding Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost becomes Pope Leo XIV. Here’s what he’s said about LGBTQ+ people U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost becomes Pope Leo XIV. Here’s what he’s said about LGBTQ+ people Two days after the College of Cardinals gathered to elect a new pope, a decision has been made. Robert Prevost has been chosen, becoming the first American pope in history. He’s adopted the name Pope Leo XIV. Leo’s ascension to the papacy comes after Pope Francis, a relatively progressive pope when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, died last month. The new pope is from Chicago and is 69. He earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania, then received a diploma in theology at the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. He previously served as a Catholic missionary in South America, CNN reports. He worked in Trujillo, Peru for about ten years and then served as bishop of the Peruvian city of Chiclayo from 2014 until 2023. The outlet states that many believe Leo will continue many of Francis’s reforms. In his first speech as pope, Leo said, “We have to seek together to be a missionary church. A church that builds bridges and dialogue.” The new pontiff also honored his predecessor. “Let us keep in our ears the weak voice of Pope Francis that blesses Rome. The Pope who blessed Rome, gave his blessing to the entire world that morning of Easter. Allow me to follow up on that blessing. God loves us. God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail.” While he honored Francis, there are some questions about his support of LGBTQ+ rights. Francis made several pro-LGBTQ+ reforms during his papacy. But the new pope has made some anti-LGBTQ+ statements. In 2012, at a meeting of bishops, “he lamented that Western news media and popular culture fostered ‘sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel,’” The New York Times reports. He specifically mentioned the “*********** lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.” As bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, he objected to a plan to teach about gender in schools, saying, “The promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don’t exist.” However, “he has voiced compassion for the LGBTQ community,” according to the Meidas Touch Network. But “while he may foster a more welcoming environment, he has not signaled any openness to changing Church teaching on same-sex marriage or the ordination of women,” Meidas Touch reports. LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLAAD said it looked forward to working with Leo. The group had previously met with Francis to discuss LGBTQ+ rights. “The Roman Catholic Church stands on the threshold of a hopeful and inclusive new chapter. With Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, there is an extraordinary opportunity to inspire billions around the world and further embrace LGBTQ people with compassion, dignity, and love,” GLAAD’s CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement provided to The Advocate. “He can build on the progress already made and help create a Church that truly reflects the universal message of acceptance and care for all. We are hopeful to collaborate with Pope Leo, just as we did with Pope Francis, to help ensure the Church continues to grow as a welcoming home for everyone.” – YouTube www.youtube.com This story is developing… Trudy Ring contributed reporting. Bill Gates doubles giving to $200 billion, ‘virtually all’ his wealth Bill Gates doubles giving to $200 billion, ‘virtually all’ his wealth Bill Gates arrives for a press conference to launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at the European Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters in Brussels on October 11, 2023. Simon Wohlfahrt | Afp | Getty Images Billionaire Bill Gates announced on Thursday that he will double his charitable giving to $200 billion over the next 20 years. In a blog post, the Microsoft co-founder wrote that he was motivated by the many challenges facing the world, such as children’s health and climate change, as well as the late Andrew Carnegie’s admonishment of wealth hoarding. “People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich’ will not be one of them,” Gates wrote. “There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people.” Gates is currently the world’s fifth richest person with a $168 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The $200 billion commitment assumes his charitable foundation’s endowment will grow through investments. The Gates Foundation, founded by Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, in 2000, has already given away more than $100 billion. After Bill Gates has given away “virtually all” of his wealth, the foundation will close at the end of 2045, he said. Gates is one of few billionaires to publicly step up their charitable giving as nonprofits and universities reel from federal funding cuts. Despite his increase in giving, he said philanthropists cannot cover the multibillion-dollar foreign aid cuts by the U.S. and other wealthy countries. “The United States, United Kingdom, France, and other countries around the world are cutting their aid budgets by tens of billions of dollars. And no philanthropic organization—even one the size of the Gates Foundation—can make up the gulf in funding that’s emerging right now,” he wrote. “It’s unclear whether the world’s richest countries will continue to stand up for its poorest people.” Get Inside Wealth directly to your inbox In an interview with the Financial Times, Gates criticized Elon Musk for his role in cutting U.S. foreign aid. In February, Musk’s so-called Department of Governmental Efficiency effectively shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development. The federal agency disbursed $42.5 billion in 2023, according to government data, that provided lifesaving assistance, including health care, clean water and food across the globe. “The picture of the world’s richest man killing the world’s poorest children is not a pretty one,” Gates told the Financial Times. In early March, the agency estimated that the cuts would have dire consequences, including 1 million children with severe acute malnutrition going untreated and up to 166,000 additional deaths from malaria. Gates, his then-wife and Warren Buffett founded the Giving Pledge in 2010 as a commitment for the world’s richest people to give away more than half their wealth in their lifetime or wills. French Gates has since stepped down from the Gates Foundation but has her own philanthropic organization. Musk has signed the Giving Pledge. Gates told the New York Times that he doesn’t know whether Musk will follow through. “The Giving Pledge — an unusual aspect of it that you can wait until you die and still fulfill it. So who knows? He could go on to be a great philanthropist,” he said before pointing to Musk’s involvement in the foreign aid cuts. Musk has given away less than 1% of his wealth, according to Forbes. The publication estimates his out-the-door giving — gifts that have been paid, not just pledged or parked in a foundation — at $620 million over his lifetime through 2023.
